Thousands of locals pay their respects cross the local community, an estimated 13,000 people came together to remember past and present soldiers at both the Penrith and St Marys Dawn Services.

Penrith RSL sub-Branch President, Mick McConnell said that an overwhelming 7,000 people attended Penrith’s service at Memory Park to honour our bravest men and women early Tuesday morning.

“The service was one of the best we’ve ever had,” he said.

“IE know the EMILY M MIL MILY IL LY N NEWTON EWT EW W little O kids enjoyed it, they ON all sat up the front in their pyjamas and had a great time.”

Mr McConnell said that he was very pleased with the turnout, as families came together to pay their respects.

“To be quite honest we didn’t know how many would come, and next year should be a big year too,” he said.

“A lot of people came back to the club, I think it was one of the biggest breakfasts we’ve ever had, which is a testament to the number of residents who came to Memory Park.”

St Marys RSL sub-Branch Secretary, Tony Fryer said they’ve never seen numbers like this before.

“We had 5,000 people last year, and there was at least 1,000 more this year,” he said.

“I’m a bit bias I suppose, but I have heard others say it’s the best we’ve ever had.”

The St Marys service welcomed the descendants of Reg Saunders, the first Indigenous man to be made a captain in the Australian Army, who also served as President of St Marys RSL sub-Branch in 1961.

The family travelled from Queensland to take part in the local Dawn Service.

“It was an absolute privilege to have them join us,” Mr Fryer said.

“At the end of the service, there was a presentation to them of an artwork from Erskine Park High School and our President.”

The fantastic response from the community at both services has been praised by both sub-Branches as the spirit of the ANZAC lives on.

n Monday morning, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott will front up for the second of his now fortnightly radio appearances on Ray Hadley’s 2GB morning show.

Yesterday, the latest radio ratings showed why Malcolm Turnbull and the Federal Government should be worried about it.

Alongside Alan Jones, Hadley is part of the most powerful six and a half hours on Australian radio each morning.

With the iconic 2UE now all but gone from the Sydney radio landscape, at least in the talk space, Hadley and Jones now command even more of the market.

And they are now heard well beyond Sydney, with both of their shows simulcast into 4BC in Brisbane as well as countless other stations across the country.

So it is no small issue for the Government that Abbott, still hurting from being turfed as Prime Minister in September 2015 when a big chunk of his colleagues stabbed him in the back, is now a regular on Hadley’s program.

Every Monday the political news week will kick off with Abbott’s latest comments on the Hadley program.

And while he’s smart in the way he does it, it’s unlikely that Abbott’s comments will be very kind about Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull or the current state of the Government.

Abbott is no Kevin Rudd.

He may feel exactly the same way Rudd did after being turfed by Julia Gillard, but he’s going about his revenge very differently.

criticism, but more calculated. He was killed off because, apparently, he was unliked by the public, so he’s using good old public relations to re-build his reputation.

And he’s picking the right platforms.

In addition to his appearance on Hadley’s program (which by the way became available after Hadley dumped Treasurer Scott Morrison from the same spot), Abbott is also locked in to appear on Ben Fordham’s program on the same radio network.

And he’s been a regular on SKY News, where he has significant support especially from Paul Murray whose prime time evening program has a strong audience.

2GB and SKY offer you a reasonably big audience, but you can be assured that other media outlets will piggyback off Abbott’s appearances, as they did last Monday when he first appeared on

Hadley’s program, extending Abbott’s reach even further.

Disagree all you like but you don’t win seats in western Sydney without the support of 2GB. And you don’t win elections without the support of western Sydney.

I’m not sure what Abbott’s end game is here. I suspect that while he most likely harbours a desire to be Prime Minister again, he’s smart enough to know that it’s unlikely that he’ll ever return to the top job. There just doesn’t appear to be an appetite for Abbott 2.0.

Perhaps Abbott is happy enough to just keep destabalising Turnbull.

After all, it must be frustrating to know you got dumped because your colleagues became afraid of Newspoll, the same measuring stick that suggests Turnbull is on the nose.

Or of course, maybe Abbott legitimately believes the Government is losing its way and the problems need to be aired publicly.

Whatever his reasons, we are two years away from the next Federal Election and Abbott knows a lot can happen in 24 months. It is a lifetime in politics.

Here’s the even scarier part for the Government – Abbott is making plenty of sense in his appearances through the media. The bloke knows what he is talking about.

I, and many others of course, wrote back in 2015 that ultimately, Turnbull’s disgraceful act in turfing out Abbott would come back to haunt him.

It didn’t take long for the ghost of Tony Abbott to appear. And every time he appears on 2GB, the fate of the Government gets even more grim.

Federal and State MPs donate funds to worthy Police cause

Council takes defunct Penrith Business Alliance to court ALENA HIGGINS

ine months after voting to force Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) to produce financial records detailing how it spent public money, Penrith City Council has taken the now defunct organisation to court.

Supreme Court proceedings against the PBA got underway last Friday, after Council commenced legal action to hold it to account.

Council vowed in July last year to compel PBA to detail how funds provided to it by Council was spent.

Between 2009 and 2015, the PBA received $3.5 million from Council to develop a modern approach to achieve economic development in the Penrith area, however about $600,000 was unaccounted for, Council claimed.

For the first five years, the PBA reported to Council on where the money was going and how it was used, but Council claimed it had still not received an audited financial statement or unspent public money for the final 2014/2015 financial year.

Chief Inspectors Tracy Stone and Stuart Davis from the Penrith and Hawkesbury police commands are joining Superintendent Steve Egginton from Mount Druitt command to participate in the gruelling 300km Remembrance Bicycle Ride.

When the Weekender last spoke to Mr Brennan back in late July, he said the records in question had been audited and would be available to PBA and Council shortly.

When approached for comment last week, Council was similarly tight lipped, only providing a short statement when asked a number of questions. “Council has commenced legal action against the PBA and it is not appropriate for any further comment to be made,� a Council spokesman said.

Councillor and former Mayor Karen McKeown said it was crucial to get to the bottom of it. “This is public money. We have an obligation to find out whether this money was used appropriately for economic development activities,� she said in July last year.

The court case has been adjourned to May 5.

oters in western Sydney feel disillusioned and ignored by both major political parties as debates over housing affordability continue.

During a visit to Cambridge Park last Saturday, Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten said he is trying to rebuild local trust by “being on the ground”.

“I don’t treat western Sydney as fly over country between Sydney airport and Canberra,” Mr Shorten told the Weekender.

After addressing the media to discuss Labor’s plans for housing affordability and jobs, Mr Shorten exclusively told the Weekender that conditions are “terrible” as many residents have given up on the idea of ever owning their own home.

“There’s two groups of people we have in mind when we think about housing and housing affordability,” Mr Shorten said.

“There’s prospective first home buyers who need the resources to get there, but it’s the out-of-control prices that are harming them.

“But then you’ve got people who don’t have any immediate prospect of getting into the housing market, but are looking for secure rental accommodation.”

As the rate of homelessness continues to climb, Mr Shorten said the 10-year wait list for social housing in Penrith was inadequate and more houses are desperately needed.

“We’ve proposed renegotiating the national housing agreement to look at how we can increase the supply of social housing,” he said.

“We’re also proposing to reverse the cuts which the Turnbull Government have done, $88 million dollars for refuges for women to be able to get secure accommodation for women who are fleeing abusive relationships.”

An advocate for women’s issues, Labor MP for Lindsay Emma Husar has made her dissatisfaction with the Liberal Party well known.

Ms Husar said that what they say and what they do can be confusing and at times contradictory.

“There is some distrust in the electorate, but at the end of the day you have to look at who is doing what,” she said.

“They come out here with their three word slogan ‘jobs and growth’, but we haven’t seen any jobs come to western Sydney, we’ve actually seen jobs move out of western Sydney.”

Mr Shorten acknowledges that many residents feel their voices aren’t being heard, and is actively trying to ensure that the great Australian dream stays alive.

“We’re in touch with the lives of people, and that’s why we want to make sure Medicare is properly funded. It’s why we’re defending penalty rates, it’s why we think housing affordability is a mainstream issue,” he said.

“We don’t just say, move to the country or get a different job.

“We’re here to lead, not to follow.”

Mr Shorten believes the housing affordability crisis is out of control, as it affects everyone on some level.

“We’re conscious that the story of housing is not just for first home buyers, but for people who have insecure, or indeed

“We would certainly make legislative changes within the first 100 days of forming a Government,” Mr Shorten said, “Turnbull has had four years to do it, at what point do you start saying, well maybe it’s time to look at the other mob.”

The Penrith Panthers will be playing in Bathurst for the next 10 years, with the NRL club signing a new deal with Bathurst Council last week.

The agreement continues a partnership that began in 2014 and has already seen the Panthers play three NRL fixtures at Carrington Park in Bathurst. The new deal sees Penrith travelling to Bathurst until at least 2028. The Panthers face the Canberra Raiders at Carrington Park on Saturday, June 10.

enrith is only a few texts away from becoming a town of hunchbacks as our addiction to smartphones continues to grow.

A recent survey by the Chiropractor’s Association of NSW (CAANSW) shows chiropractors are seeing on average between 11 and 20 patients a week suffering from chronic neck pain, headaches, poor posture and repetitive strain injuries in the wrist and hands from texting.

President of the CAANSW, Dr John de Voy, said the rate of text neck disorder is rapidly climbing.

“These are patients who are constantly looking at their phone in a bent-forward position,” he said.

“Postural bad habits over time can develop into more serious health conditions such as spinal degenerative

disease, osteoarthritis, hunchback and reduced mobility.”

Local chiropractor Mary Anne Lowery estimates that about 70 per cent of her clients suffer from these symptoms.

“We’re seeing on x-rays if you’re in that position for too long, it can be a permanent structural problem,” she said.

“That can develop onto headaches, hunchback and early degeneration of the spine.”

Ms Lowery said the earlier the symptoms are discovered, the easier it is to reverse.

“Between texting and being on the computer, our whole lifestyle is revolving around sitting down and being sedentary rather than being out there walking,” she said.

The best way to combat the damage caused by mobile phones is being aware of your posture and stretching every 30 minutes.

Portable sheds axed as crisis deepens Council dumps idea to house Penrith’s homeless in portable sheds ALENA HIGGINS

enrith Councillors have knocked back a 12-month trial to provide portable sheds as overnight shelter for the homeless, preferring to identify other options instead.

The initiative, spearheaded by Councillor Marcus Cornish, was tipped to cost up to $221,681 to set up initially, with an ongoing cost of more than $250,000 per year.

Earlier this month, all Councillors bar Cr Cornish voted against the pilot project, which would have seen six movable sheds with hired toilets and showers available for vulnerable tenants overnight.

Martin Beckett, CEO of local charity, Christ Mission Possible, is on the ground tackling homelessness everyday.

Pastor Beckett said another, more sustainable and cost effective option would be converting an existing commercial premise into a homeless shelter-style accommodation with beds for 15-20 rough sleepers, who are provided a hot dinner, shower and fresh clothes.

But he adds, getting people off the streets would require “flexibility” from Council to lift its usual red tape.

“It will obviously involve Council bending some rules because we have

“Governments like to play it safe and only colour between the lines, but homelessness is dirty and you’re going to need to get dirty.”

Pastor Beckett said the commercial space could be donated or rented by Council, with the major outlay being the

set up cost – installing cubicles, a TV room and a kitchen, but he stressed “we’re not trying to make it a house”.

He said one of the main drawcards to a commercial location was little to no imposition on residents if things got “messy”. “[Clients] would come in after hours when other factories are closed, have their dinner and breakie and they’re done,” he said.

“They can turn up and get their bed if they are helping and being constructive, and onward you would move those people into more transitional accommodation.”

Mr Beckett said the accommodation solution, which Christ Mission Possible would put its hand up to facilitate, could be run primarily by volunteers, with a paid professional or case worker on site to oversee proceedings.

He said 15 to 20 beds was sufficient to target Penrith’s homeless problem, claiming any more would just attract homelessness from outlying areas.

Penrith Council representatives are currently investigating a ‘Tiny Homes’ project rolled out on the Central Coast, which has been able to build six dwellings (four for independent living and two for laundry and common areas) for a total of $30,000.

Strong sleeper begs to have conditions changed in court

A man who blamed sleep apnea for failing to comply with his court order has been given the benefit of the doubt.

Timothy Matthew Wilson faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday in a bid to change his community service work from weekends to weekdays.

The court heard Mr Wilson was failing to fulfil his unpaid work obligations on the weekends because he could not wake up, but his flat mate was home on weekdays and was able to rouse him.

Can’t he use his alarm clock... or two or three alarm clocks?” a sceptical Magistrate Georgia Knight queried.

“Unfortunately because of his sleep apnea he can’t hear it,” his lawyer replied.

“Does he realise the community service order was given to him in lieu of a fulltime jail sentence?” Magistrate Knight said.

“He’s been given the opportunity not to go inside by doing work within the community.

“Do you understand they’re the options?” she said matter-of-factly, addressing Mr Wilson himself.

“I snore like a train – I snore louder than my alarms,” Mr Wilson explained.

“My body is used to loud noises.”

“My body is only processing about one quarter of the sleep I get,” he added.

The matter was adjourned to May 11 for an update report from Community Corrections.

Single mum avoids jail despite disregarding court orders

A single mother-of-three who flagrantly disregarded court orders not to drive has narrowly avoided full-time jail after she was nabbed behind the wheel again.

Chloe Ann Titheradge, 25, fronted Penrith Local Court charged with two counts of driving while disqualified, one count of driving an unregistered car and one count of breach of bond.

The court heard Ms Titheradge, who is

31 weeks pregnant with her fourth, was only months away from being able to get her licence again when she was caught driving her intoxicated friend home.

Some time later, the Werrington County resident was busted once again, this time attempting to move her own car to a safer location.

Magistrate Georgia Knight said her traffic record showed she paid scant regard to court orders preventing her from driving while suspended.

“Ultimately, the court gets to the point that the only way to keep you from driving is to sentence you to imprisonment,” she said.

Her lawyer told the court the offender “realises the seriousness of continuing to drive”, which was rammed home when she spent a night in the cells.

Magistrate Knight said the offence was not trivial, pointing out research showed a high correlation between people who are disqualified and people who have accidents, though she added it was unclear if this was due to the motorist’s attitude of the way they drove.

She was handed an eight-month suspended sentence, ordered to undertake 60 hours of community service and fined $200 for driving an unregistered car.

Teen granted bail after threats to mother’s new lover

An overprotective Oxley Park teenager who took issue with his mother’s new boyfriend has been granted strict conditional bail, despite allegedly threatening to kill and stab her lover with a knife.

Penrith Local Court heard Blake Walsh, 18, disapproved of the new man in his mother’s life, labelling him a “junkie” and unsuitable to be around his two younger siblings, aged eight and three.

Acknowledging in normal circumstances she would refuse bail, Magistrate Georgia Knight went against protocol, citing the accused’s young age and limited criminal history before determining the issue of victim protection could be

mitigated with bail conditions.

But not before sending him a message about his alleged behaviour.

“What ever you might think of this step father of yours, you have no right to behave in that manner,” she reprimanded.

“Breach [the conditions] and you’re probably not going to get bail [again].”

Mr Walsh, who is charged with intimidation and armed with intent, is yet to enter pleas. His matter was adjourned to May 2.

Magistrate tells teen that violence is not the answer

A teen who punched a man twice in the face after witnessing him hitting his partner has been slapped with a $300 fine and ordered to enter a 16-month good behaviour bond.

While Magistrate Georgia Knight acknowledged Raeidyn Peachey’s motives were “admirable”, she said it was not his place and force was never the answer.

“You never resolve anything with violence,” she stressed.

Magistrate Knight told the 18-year-old it was a very serious offence, adding you can never underestimate the damage caused from blunt force to the brain.

“The head is a delicate area,” she said.

She took into account his lack of criminal record, the fact he made full admission to police and his ability to pay before downgrading the fine from $400 to $300.

“Hopefully that will service as a reminder,” she said.

Charity store thief could spend two months behind bars

A woman who stole items from a charity store has been hit with a two-month jail sentence.

Michelle Gallagher faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday having been picked up on two warrants.

The court heard the North St Marys resident had only recently been placed on a Section 9 good behaviour bond for shoplifting when she re-offended, stealing about $18 from Anglicare.

Magistrate Stephen Corry didn’t hold back his disgust, saying it wasn’t the amount of goods stolen, but the organisation she pilfered from that was the issue.

He took into account her fail to appear record and failure to engage with Community Corrections before ruling the Section 5 threshold had been crossed.

However, she was subsequently granted appeal bail the following day.

Drunk plumber slapped with driving ban after crash

A drunk plumber who ran up the back of a car on his way home from the pub has been slapped with a nine-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to his third alcohol related matter.

Blake Henderson was sentenced at Penrith Local Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving.

Magistrate Georgia Knight, who had previously determined a jail sentence was the only appropriate penalty, agreed to allow him to serve his sentence in the community after he was found suitable for an Intensive Correction Order (ICO).

He was stripped of his licence for six months and ordered to fit a mandatory interlock device to his car for 24 months.

Woman given one final chance to complete program

Lisa Scott has been given one final adjournment to complete a traffic offender program.

Ms Scott fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday afternoon charged with driving with an illicit substance present in her blood.

The accused told the court she had been the victim of two home invasions since the beginning of the year, hindering her ability to attend the course.

“Well, I’ll give her one more opportunity, if she hasn’t done it by then, we’ll proceed to sentence in any event,” Magistrate Georgian Knight informed her lawyer.

The matter was adjourned to June 8 for sentence.

St Marys: Six bags of drugs found in suspect car

On Friday, February 21 police were patrolling Forrester Road when they were alerted on the Automatic Plate Recognition system that a passing vehicle was a hire car that had not been returned.

Police have stopped this vehicle and had a conversation with the driver, where they sighted the passenger who allegedly appeared nervous. Both parties were removed from the vehicle.

It is alleged that a 29-year-old North St Marys woman had a handbag containing six small re-sealable plastic bags containing methyl-amphetamine.

She was arrested and charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’, ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘ possession of equipment for administering prohibited drug’.

She will appear in court on June 26.

Werrington Downs: Car wipes out several front yards

A man has been charged after losing control of his car and driving through several of his neighbours’ front yards.

Police were called to an address in Granary Circuit, Werrington Downs, at about 7.10pm on Friday, April 21.

A 32-year-old man told police he was reversing down his driveway when he lost control of his car, damaging front yards, fences and retaining walls.

Police from St Marys Local Area Command arrested the man and took him to St Marys Police Station where he returned an alleged breath analysis reading of 0.308.

The man was charged with high-range PCA and will appear in court on June 12.

Man stopped by police three times in the one night

The third time was definitely not a charm for one unlicensed driver who continued to ignore police last weekend.

At about 8.40am on Saturday, April 22, police were patrolling Durham Street, Mt Druitt when they sighted a vehicle and

stopped it for the purpose of a random breath test.

The driver, a 33-year-old Colyton man returned a negative sample, but checks on his license revealed that it had expired.

He was informed he would receive an infringement notice for driving unlicensed and was informed not to drive.

At about 8.45am, police left the location, but shortly afterwards noticed the man get in his vehicle and pull up next to the police car. He was again stopped and informed not to drive.

He was told he would receive additional infringements for the offence of driving unlicensed.

At 9am the man was sighted for the third time driving the same vehicle on Melbourne Street, Oxley Park.

Police stopped and had a conversation with the man, this time charging him with ‘License expired two years or more before’.

He will appear in court on May 25.

South Penrith: Men assaulted and threatened with gun

Police are appealing for assistance following an armed robbery and assault on ANZAC Day. At about 9.30pm on Tuesday, April 25, police and NSW Ambulance Paramedics were called to Smith Street after receiving information that two males were allegedly assaulted and threatened with a firearm.

They were approached by several men in a silver Ford Falcon sedan before being assaulted and robbed of mobile phones and credit cards.

Nearby residents assisted the men after hearing the disturbance in the street.

One of the victims was treated for a fractured jaw and both men were taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment.

A short time later, the alleged attackers attended a service station on Mulgoa Road at Regentville where they committed a robbery on the console operator.

457 visas axed – now what?

On April 18 2017, Australia’s Prime Minister along with the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection announced that Temporary Work (Skilled) Visas, commonly known as ‘457’ visas, will be overhauled.

A transition is underway for a new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa which will take the place of 457 visa, rendering the current 457 visa system obsolete by March 2018.

The new visa system will have two types: 1. A short-term visa for a period of up to two years 2. A medium-term visa for a period of up to four years Immediate changes to the occupations lists have been revealed from April 19 2017 with a significant reduction of eligible occupations. The Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) will be replaced with a new Short-Term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL) while the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) will be replaced with a new Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

It is expected that only immigrants seeking occupations on the MLTSSL will be eligible to apply for the four year medium-term visa, with those seeking work on the STSOL only eligible for the short-term visa.

The MLTSSL will contain occupations that the Government has assessed to be of “high value to the Australian economy and aligning to the Government’s longer term training and workforce strategies”. The Government says that this prioritises Australian Workers and safeguards genuine skill shortages. The new occupations lists are also expected to be regularly updated and reviewed.

The STSOL is expected to be reviewed based on advice from the Department of Employment every six months while the MLTSSL will continue to be revised based on results from the annual Department of Education and Training Skilled Occupations List (SOL) review.

In addition to updated occupations lists it is also anticipated that the new visa will be introducing new requirements for both the temporary and permanent skilled visa applicants such as; higher English Language requirements, a longer period of minimum work experience, a reduced maximum age to be eligible, a longer period of time before being eligible to apply for permanent residence and introducing minimum market salary rates.

A more comprehensive list of the updated occupations lists and anticipated reforms can be found on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection Website.

Police remind motorists to lock vehicles St Marys and Penrith Police are reminding motorists to ensure they lock their vehicles when left unattended and remove any items of value.

In recent weeks there have been a number of thefts from unattended motor vehicles, often where vehicles have had the registration plates taken.

New clinic to tackle obesity head-on Nepean Hospital is now home to Australia’s first ever family-centred obesity clinic EMILY NEWTON

ustralia’s first ever family-centred obesity clinic launched at Nepean Hospital on Monday to help educate and treat families that struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard joined State Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, to launch the $1 million Nepean Blue Mountains Family Obesity Service that will help thousands of families break the cycle of obesity.

“It is very significant that we try and come together to really put an emphasis on what we can do proactively about obesity,” Mr Hazzard said.

“To have the Family Obesity Service here in Nepean Blue Mountains is absolutely fantastic.”

The service draws on the expertise of specialists, including doctors, dietitians, endocrinologists, paediatricians, psychologists, nurses and midwives, to work together in tackling obesity.

Patients, including pregnant women, children and adults, are referred to the free service by their regular GP. With 60 per cent of people either overweight or obese, the local health district

has higher than average rates of obesity causing a tremendous direct and indirect impact on individuals, families and the community.

Dr Kathryn Williams said the service will ensure staff can deliver the best evidence based care to patients to improve their quality of life.

“The majority of very morbid obese people are house bound and extremely lonely, living very solitary lives,” Dr Williams said.

“The local health district is seeing an upward trajectory in patients living with obesity.

“In 10 years time, we may see this massive tsunami that we need to deal with now.”

Mr Ayres said the program recognises the impact of the family and what happens at home in achieving positive health outcomes.

“At its rawest level, what we are actually talking about is saving people’s lives,” he said.

“You can’t change one person’s behaviour in a household without having some impact on other members.”

History disappears

How dogs are helping a young boy through life EMILY NEWTON

he special bond shared between children and their dogs was celebrated by one local family this week for National Kids and Pets Day (Wednesday, April 26).

Cranebrook resident and registered breeder Miriam O’Callaghan said her son Noah, who has Down syndrome, has formed a special bond with their Bullmastiffs.

“They’ve helped him a lot, Noah is verbal now and can speak well,” she said.

“For children with Down syndrome, language can develop quite late.

“It was interesting to see how Noah could relate to puppies and dogs with not a lot of speech.”

Both Noah and the dogs gain from their unique friendship, as the dogs learn to pick up body language while Noah discovers how to understand their boundaries and needs.

“Down syndrome is basically an intellectual disability,” Ms O’Callaghan said.

“While he may be 17, he is probably more like a nine-year-old.

“The dogs allow Noah to understand that animals have feelings, they feel love and happiness, they have all got very different

“It’s been such a hugely positive experience for Noah.”

Having been brought up around dogs his whole life, Noah wouldn’t remember a time without his four-legged companions.

“He has learned to forward think and consider what might be good or harmful,” Ms O’Callaghan said.

“Having animals for anybody is a grounding experience as it teaches you that there are other beings that need to be thought of.

“They have needs just like we do. Dogs are a pack animal, so they need to feel a part of the family.”

Miriam’s husband, Tony, works as a veterinarian and Noah is always excited to help his parents with the dogs, whether it’s playing and cuddling with the puppies or simply watching his parents work.

Lyn Brown, Dogs NSW President, said that growing up with dogs has many benefits for children.

“Dogs are an important part of the family, and it’s important for kids and dogs to learn to be good companions to each other,” Ms Brown said.

With the official opening last week, Business and Development manager Simone Robinson said the new facility will help better support people in the area with neurological conditions.

“Because of technology and better education today, people with disabilities are living longer,” she said.

“Because they’re living longer, they’re now facing additional issues with secondary diseases like diabetes.”

Ms Robinson said prevention through exercise is the best solution to this problem.

NeuroMoves also provides the additional support of social inclusion in the community.

“Many individuals with a disability will suffer mental anguish, things like depression and anxiety, and we know that exercise will help this,” she said.

The only facility of its type in greater western Sydney, NeuroMoves offers gym access and intensive sessions.

This week I had the opportunity to attend the Dawn Service at Memory Park where we paused to remember those Australians who have fallen in conflicts around the world. It is good to see the numbers of people increasing, especially our younger generations, at these dawn services and the ANZAC Day march.

Despite our distance from war zones, past and present, Penrith has experienced the tragic reality of war. Many of our residents served in WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam, and in recent years two Australians from Penrith lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan.

For younger generations it is sometimes difficult to understand why it is with gratitude that we should remember. But we have enjoyed the benefits of the peace and easy existence which was obtained at the cost of many lives. Few of us have ever had to risk

everything ourselves, or chance our loved ones to the dangers of war. But, for older generations of Australians, remembering such things is easier.

The ANZACs were courageous and although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy.

If we do celebrate anything on ANZAC Day it is the legacy that in the face of adversity, the ANZACs demonstrated beyond any doubt virtues of duty, courage, teamwork, resolution and self sacrifice.

Today we stand safe and free with the privileges and rights to make our own choices. We owe that freedom to those who fought, endured, suffered, and died for us and for their country.

Lest we forget.

estern Sydney’s newest Vinnies store has had an overwhelming first week of trade.

Since opening last Wednesday at Jordan Springs, the shop has been embraced and supported by the local community with people waiting earnestly for the shop to open.

Phillip Basti, Retail and Operations Manager for Vinnies, said the response has been “phenomenal.”

“The locals have really accepted it and supported it,” he said.

“We’re just so grateful for the support we’ve had in the first week, we look forward to working with the community into the future.”

Vinnies shops raise more than half of St Vincent de Paul’s revenue, with the money going back to help those less fortunate.

“All the funds raised in the shop go towards local communities,” Mr Basti said.

The new Jordan Springs Vinnies Shop is also looking for volunteers, encouraging anyone interested to enquire at the shop.

The store is located at shops 6 and 7, 56-66 Lakeside Parade, Jordan Springs.

Mickey and Minnie await deserving family EMILY NEWTON

ne local single mum and her daughter are about to experience the trip of a lifetime after years of hospital visits.

Mel Ryan’s beautiful six-year-old daughter, Eliza Limond, was born at Nepean Hospital at just 26 weeks, weighing only 725 grams.

“A few weeks prior, I had high blood pressure and they kept me overnight,” Ms Ryan said.

“The staff said they needed to get her out to make me better, or her better, at least one of us.

“We did 130 days in total at the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).”

After reoccurring infections and trips between both Nepean and Westmead hospitals, Ms Ryan began volunteering for the support unit she found during her ordeal, Nepean Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Parents Support (NNICUPS).

“It’s a crappy situation to be in, because it’s just not fair,” Ms Ryan said.

“You should still be pregnant, your baby shouldn’t be fighting.

“You never really know about NNICUPS or the NICU until you need it.”

since 2011, currently serving as the Treasurer and Secretary.

A few weeks ago, she was placed in a room at Nepean Hospital with a phone she was to answer if it rang.

“I thought I was going to a photo shoot because we were celebrating our 25th birthday,” Ms Ryan laughed.

On the phone were Nova 96.9 breakfast radio hosts Fitzy and Wippa, to give the trip of a lifetime to their family – a trip to Disneyland.

As Disney Princesses emerged from a back room holding a novelty sized boarding pass, Eliza was overjoyed when she realised what was happening.

“She’s so excited, she’s told anyone that will listen,” Ms Ryan said.

While travel dates are still being finalised, Ms Ryan and Eliza will get the chance to go on their dream holiday together.

Through NNICUPS, Ms Ryan offers support and guidance to other parents who may be going through what she has endured over the past seven years.

“The thing I say to parents now, is that you’re allowed to have a crappy day,” she said.

“When you’re in these situations, you become a better parent.

“The NICU journey is always three steps forward, two steps back.”

ecently my eight-year-old and I were cycling around Centennial Park in a two-seater pedal bike. He could barely reach the pedals, so my idea of a leisurely cycle around the park went out the window! But on our two laps of the park, I was given some food for thought in relation to running a business: 1. Work together. Our two-pedal bike became much harder to propel if we didn’t work together. This didn’t mean that we both always pedalled at the same time (although that did make things easier!): at times it was good to give each other a break. But it was vital that we encouraged each other to keep going. And important that we lifted the spirits of the other when the going got tough. Sound like a good way to operate with your business partners?

2. Focus on what’s in front of you.

Each lap of the park was a long distance and being circular, we couldn’t see the end. So it was important to focus on the immediate step or challenge, not just the

end goal. We set our sights on each incline in front of us and put our efforts into making it that far. There was always a flat or slightly downhill section where we could recharge, ready for the next hill. But if we had only focused on a goal that was out of sight, we would probably have given up. It helped immensely to break down our journey into ‘doable’ sections. This is no different for your business journey: break tasks and challenges into achievable, smaller actions and focus on getting those done. Before you know it, your goal will be closer and you will achieve what you set out to do.

3. Competition is good. Although we weren’t competing in a race, we had decided that we couldn’t let the other pedal bikes beat us to the end. This spurred us on to push that bit harder and provided us with additional goals. Likewise in business, our competitors can provide motivation to keep searching for better ways to conduct our business to get an edge on the competition.

Following the team’s captain’s run last Friday morning, Moylan stayed back to kick the ball with some local kids who had come to watch the session. I’m told the 25-year-old Origin star was there with them for 15 minutes after training was complete. Say what you want about Moylan’s captaincy ability, this photo proves he knows what’s important and that’s making kids happy.

» Penrith has committed to a long-term

future in Bathurst with an unprecedented 10-year deal announced last week. The new agreement continues a partnership that began in 2014 and has already seen the Panthers play three NRL fixtures at Carrington Park in Bathurst. The Panthers will now play there once a year until at least 2028. Panthers Chairman Dave O’Neill said the partnership delivers significant benefits to the Panthers, the people of Bathurst and the game of rugby league. “Panthers has developed a strong and productive relationship with Bathurst Regional Council and their local community,” Mr O’Neill said. “We are passionate about supporting grassroots rugby league and in return the people of the Bathurst region have truly embraced our club.”

Track work also didn’t help last weekend with public transport proving a difficult option for punters. For some reason, the Panthers v Eels game just isn’t treated with the same respect as other club rivalries.

A

s a Friday publication, Thursday Night Football poses a real headache when it comes to match previews, but given many of you receive the paper on a Thursday, let’s give it a crack anyway.

Last Saturday’s 18-12 loss to Parramatta was much worse than the end scoreline suggested.

The Panthers didn’t improve from the poor showing against Cronulla a week prior and the club is now at serious risk of missing the Finals.

In fact, I can’t see them digging their way out of this hole any time soon.

This looks like a team that is simply not

enjoying their football at the moment and Anthony Griffin has a huge job on his hands to turn things around.

If it is actually Griffin’s game plan to constantly run the ball on the fifth tackle, which results in attempts for miracle plays and very little pressure being built, it needs to be changed ASAP. If it’s not his game plan, then he needs to have a very serious chat with his troops about why they’re persisting with such a move.

When Penrith actually forced two line drop-outs late in the game, they started to build the kind of pressure they needed much earlier, and gave themselves a real shot at winning the game. Unfortunately it came too little, too late.

Griffin must also have a serious look at his bench.

Prior to the season, one of the things most Penrith fans were excited about was the impact the side would have off the

bench, but for the last few weeks Griffin has persisted with Tim Browne and Moses Leota as part of his 17, while Sitaleki Akauola and Viliame Kikau – two rampaging forwards - play in reserve grade. It makes little sense.

Brisbane have struggled in recent weeks without halfback Ben Hunt leading them around but have still managed to escape with two late wins over Souths and Gold Coast. Even without their best playmaker, the Broncos know how to close out matches and hang in for the full 80 minutes. If they are on their game 100 per cent, they could make mince meat of the Panthers.

Unfortunately too many Penrith players are out of form at the moment and when individuals aren’t delivering, the team suffers.

season, struggled last week – making just 51 metres from 34 minutes on the field.

Penrith were again dominated up front, with just two Panthers forwards (Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Corey Harawira Naera) running over 100 metres.

Conversely, only one Eels forward DIDN’T run over 100.

For the first time this season, I’m tipping against Penrith. Not because I think Brisbane are in the best of form, but because even the most positive of Penrith fan couldn’t convince me that they could turn around the woeful performances of the past fortnight into a winning one at Suncorp.

It’s great to see the team taking steps to gel better by going into camp early this week, but the best we can ask for is an improved effort on Thursday, but even that may not be enough.

Tip: Broncos by 10.

he embattled Penrith Panthers escaped the rugby league bubble of Sydney earlier this week for a four-day camp in Brisbane, ahead of their clash against the Broncos on Thursday.

Currently on a shocking four game losing streak, the 14th-placed Panthers left Penrith on Monday afternoon for an important bonding camp up north.

Speaking with Extra Time, in-form backrower Isaah Yeo said the side just needed to “get away” from the pressures back home.

“We went up early last year and had a bit of fun up there. We did a few activities together and enjoyed one another’s company,” he said.

“We are probably in need of it at the moment on the back of four straight losses, which is never good at any point of the year.

“It worked for us last year and hopefully it will again this time.”

Penrith’s latest defeat was an 18-12 loss to cross-town rivals Parramatta at ANZ Stadium.

While Yeo has been in career-best form this year, he admits his performance against the Eels wasn’t one of his best.

“I was pretty disappointed with my game on the weekend, I had a couple of errors and wasn’t really happy with how I played,” he said.

“Hopefully I can make amends for that this week against Brisbane.”

Yeo revealed that Panthers coach Anthony Griffin added in new strength and conditioning personnel during the off-season, which has enhanced his game.

Yeo currently leads Penrith’s forward pack in hit-ups and is in the top three for

“Hook brought in some new personnel this season plus I’m also still young and growing,” he said.

“At the moment I’m 22 and I like to think I have some more growth in me yet.

“We had a really tough pre-season – I know it’s not showing too much with our results but I think it will all come together soon.”

The Dubbo product, who is a shoo-in for the Country Origin team next week, said despite Penrith’s awful start to the season, his teammates remain as close as ever.

“We are pretty lucky that we are all so

young and have come through the grades together. We are all really close and probably more-so when we are in situations like this,” Yeo said.

“By no means is there any tension between us, we are best mates and I see the boys more than my own family.”

From premiership favourites at the start of the year, Penrith need to chalk up a win soon if they are any chance of scraping into the top eight.

While pundits are questioning Penrith’s game plan and strategy going into matches, Yeo is backing his coach and said a win is not too far away.

Going into camp in Brisbane on Monday this week might be the best thing for the Panthers to escape the Sydney media and really knuckle down.

It’ll also be good for them to concentrate not just on footy but bonding and that togetherness and being able to enjoy each other’s company and shut out what’s going on – because it hasn’t been a great start.

However, a game like Thursday night can really change how you’ve been playing your footy.

I’ve watched every Panthers game very closely this year and there just seems to be a lot of stress there.

We had the same stress in 2015 – we started off the season really well but we had that stress of ‘this is our year’. I believe this current group really just need to worry about one game at a time.

It’s going to be really tough making the

eight with only two wins on the board so far, but the Panthers just need to concentrate on one game at a time and then build on this next block.

Over this next month they need to win two from three heading into the bye because one from three isn’t going to do it.

I remember I nearly got dropped back at the Dragons in 2011 when we lost five-in-arow following State of Origin.

Wayne Bennett came up to me at training and said ‘we’re going to drop you, you look tired from Origin and you’re looking flat, we’re going to give you a week off’.

I remember going home devastated but I returned to training the next day and I said ‘nup, I want to play’. Wayne then said ‘we were never going to drop you, we just wanted to see some excitement’.

The players need to get excited about playing again. When you lose three or four-in-a-row no one expects you to win, they just expect you to continue losing.

That’s why Thursday night is really important, not just from a season point of view but for player development.

is running out.

When you are losing it sucks but the only way you can stop losing is to go out there and enjoy your footy and just be in the contest.

Are Penrith’s young and inexperienced halves up to the challenge?

OX League’s ‘The Professor’s Second Year Syndrome’ is comedy gold, but the second year struggles of Penrith’s halves is no laughing matter.

Boasting an average age of 20, can five-eighth Te Marie Martin and halfback Nathan Cleary really win Penrith a competition this season?

Martin didn’t play last weekend and he’s likely not to suit up again on Thursday, while Cleary has been struggling to recapture the same form he had at the end of last year.

After losing to their fierce local rivals in Parramatta last weekend, the Panthers need to pick themselves up against a Broncos side that enjoyed a good, albeit controversial, win over the Rabbitohs last week.

Young Martin had to be replaced last weekend due to injury, which then saw Bryce Cartwright return to the halves for the first time this year.

However, Cartwright made a really sloppy mistake in the opening moments of the game, which really set the tone for his team that day.

With Martin unlikely to play, Cartwright will get another chance to redeem himself when he lines up in the halves again on Thursday.

aspect this season and that’s where a strong leader needs to step up to get things back on track.

Did everyone go off too early when they made Penrith the premiership favourites before a ball was even kicked?

Maybe.

Does Penrith need a more solid and experienced halves combination to really be amongst the NRL elite?

Perhaps.

However coach Anthony Griffin is still going to continue down the path of an inexperienced halves pairing for now, but what do they need to find in the coming weeks to show they can surge up the ladder and prove they are premiership contenders again?

Even fellow Extra Time columnist Jamie Soward could’ve played a role in helping steer these young halves, if he was still at the club this season.

Obviously Phil Gould and Anthony Griffin decided to let Soward go midway through last year and ride it out with inexperienced halves, which may not pay dividends for the club and their fans for a few more years to come.

There’s certainly some interesting times ahead for the Panthers.

ike all rugby league clubs, the Penrith Panthers have at times found themselves at the centre of controversy involving players off the field.

Whilst he will forever be remembered in glowing terms thanks to his efforts in captaining the Panthers to premiership success in 2003, Craig Gower unfortunately found himself at the centre of controversy more than once during his time with the Panthers.

Before a ball was even kicked in 2006, Gower was dramatically stripped of the captaincy and fined $30,000 after the Board investigated complaints about his behaviour while attending a charity golf tournament the previous December.

Gower: “No, I won’t be. I’m with the club. I have committed to the club.”

Just days later, Gower was granted a release by the Panthers, confirming his departure at the end of the 2007 season to join French rugby.

“We have reluctantly agreed in principle to Craig’s request because we believe that under the circumstances it is in his best interests to have a change,” said General Manager Michael Leary.

“Our decision was based on the great service that Craig has given our club.”

Hadley went on air and called Gower a liar over the initial interview.

Gower tried to contact Hadley off air to discuss the circumstances surrounding his departure, and used other media outlets to get his message across.

In the end, Craig Gower will be remembered for all the right reasons – that 2003 premiership included. Unfortunately, like many star players, there’s a few black marks on the record as well.

Tony Puletua was handed the captaincy for the 2006 season.

At first, Gower was angry by the club’s punishment – he threatened to quit, but ultimately stayed on. However, in some ways, the damage had already been done and it seemed a sour relationship between the number seven and the club would most likely be maintained until his eventual departure.

Just a year later, Gower would find himself at the centre of more controversy, this time over his loyalty to Penrith and a drama-charged radio stoush with 2GB’s Ray Hadley.

In June of 2007, with rumours circulating about Gower potentially seeking a release from the Panthers, the following interview took place between Hadley and Gower on 2GB. Hadley: “Are you seeking a release?”

Gower: “I have not, I have not sought a release.”

Hadley: “And you won’t be?”

Makings of a rock star

hen we first met Jimmy Barnes in his e a r l y C o l d Chisel days it was clear he had the makings of a rock star.

But behind that iconic voice and frenetic on-stage personality was a damaged man struggling to cope with the scars of an abusive childhood.

It’s this Jimmy that fans have been introduced to through his best-selling autobiography Working Class Boy. The process of putting his life on the page wasn’t easy, but for Jimmy it drew attention to some important lessons.

“One of the main things I learned is that old adage of what doesn’t kill you makes you strong,” he told the Weekender.

“A lot of things that nearly killed me as a kid moulded me into being the sort of person I am as a rock singer.

“When I joined Cold Chisel I was aggressive, I was needy, I wanted people to like me, which is really important when you’re a rock ‘n’ roll singer.

“But by the end, because I hadn’t dealt with those issues, they nearly killed me again.”

These days Jimmy Barnes has learned to control his demons by facing up to his struggles and seeking support.

“You’ve got to get help, talk to friends,

talk to professionals – I went and saw a therapist for years because I was out of control,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter how tough you are.

Look how blessed I was, how lucky I was.

I was successful, at the top of my game, I had good people around me, but it was still killing me.”

By sharing his story Jimmy has found he’s also opened the door for others to do the same.

“I’ve had people slipping me notes during shopping centre meet and greets saying ‘help me I’m in a violent relationship’, or ‘I have alcoholic parents’, or ‘I’m an alcoholic, help me I’m out of control and I’m hurting my family’,” Jimmy said.

“The first stage in a lot of this stuff is just to talk to people. If you can get people to open up then you can start the healing process and start change.”

Though he himself is a changed man,

Jimmy says there’s certain struggles that never go away, like those pre-gig nerves.

Luckily though his coping strategy has changed since the Cold Chisel days.

“I used to drink and get smashed a lot because I would get so nervous,” he said.

“When I get up there now I’m still as nervous, it’s still like doing your first show, but the energy is probably more focused.”

That focused energy will be on show when Jimmy, along with fellow rock icon Jon Stevens, head to Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa next weekend.

This is the first event of its kind at the historic estate and, for Jimmy, it’s an opportunity to embrace his loyal fans.

“There’s a lot of reasons for me to do this show but I guess first and foremost is that this is the location of fans who’ve been following me for the last 30 to 40 years,” he said.

“I’m really happy to come out and do a festival of this standard in the heartland of my supporters.

“It’s a good location and a good bill, we just need a good audience and we’re ready to rock.”

As for whether he will take his life from the stage to the screen Jimmy says he has been approached about a biopic and he is open to the idea, but only if it’s honest.

“I don’t want to sensationalise any of this stuff,” he said.

“I don’t want to go out and make a movie about me being wild and reckless when it should be about being damaged and the struggle to try to make life work.”

It may have been caught up in that infamous Oscars bungle, but ‘Moonlight’ is more than deserving of its own spotlight.

The film focuses on the themes of identity, friendship, family and love as it follows the life of a young black man Chiron (Ashton Sanders) who’s growing up in a rough area of Miami.

‘Moonlight’ takes audiences through three defining chapters from childhood to adulthood as it explores contemporary

African American life.

‘Moonlight’ has earned plenty of critical acclaim, taking home awards for Best Picture at the Oscars and the Golden Globes, and earning Oscars for supporting cast members Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris.

Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes described the film as ‘a remarkable and brilliantly crafted look at lives too rarely seen in cinema’.

The virtual band behind mega hits like ‘Feel Good Inc.’ and ‘Clint Eastwood’ is back with the release of their new studio album ‘Humanz’.

The politically-charged release features a host of guest artists on tracks that take influence from a range of genres.

Before the album’s release the band premiered singles ‘Ascension’, ‘Andromeda’, ‘We Got the Power’ and ‘Saturnz Barz’, which also featured an animated video. The tracks have already racked up millions of views on YouTube.

It’s the band’s fifth release and the first since 2010’s ‘Plastic Beach’ and ‘The Fall’.

Early reviews have been mostly positive, suggesting ‘Humanz’ will be another hit for the animated group.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Rated M

This week Star-Lord and his fellow misfits are back on the big screen in the latest Marvel release ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’.

This follow-up to the hugely successful 2014 film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sees the team continue on their adventures through the outer reaches of the cosmos.

As they seek to uncover the mystery behind Peter Quill’s parentage, the group must fight to keep their newly formed family together.

During their adventure, fan-favourites from the classic comics will come to their aid, as old foes become new allies.

The film franchise is led by action’s newest golden boy Chris Pratt as Peter

Quill/Star-Lord.

Pratt is joined on-screen by Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket and Vin Diesel as the voice of Baby Groot.

With the debut film winning plenty of fans for its humour and heart, there’s no doubt that this sequel has huge shoes to fill.

Ê Channel Nine have announced they’ll air ‘Stayin’ Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Music of the Bee Gees’ this Monday, May 1 at 9pm. The special aired in the US recently, topping the ratings with 10.3 million viewers. Surviving member Barry Gibb performs on the special as does Celine Dion, Keith Urban, Ed Sheeran and Nick Jonas. There’s also an appearance by John Travolta, the star of ‘Saturday Night Fever’.

Ê The ABC is co-producing a new New Zealand-based kid’s series ‘The Legend of Monkey’ with Netflix and TVNZ. The 10-part series follows a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey as they attempt to bring an end to a demonic reign of chaos and restore balance to their world. “The mythical tale of the Monkey King is a story that continues to captivate global audiences,” said Michael Carrington, Head of Children’s at ABC Television. ‘The Legend of Monkey’ will air on the ABC next year. For most of us having debt is normal.

In order to build wealth and accumulate assets it is common practice to acquire debt. Debt can also occur if we spend more than we earn. Either way it’s likely for most people to have a certain level of debt.

Carrying any debt will of course result in a portion of your income being used to service this debt. This is whether it is interest only and more so with principle and interest repayments.

This will reduce your available income to meet your lifestyle requirements and achieve your other goals, financial and otherwise.

If the debt is the result of acquiring an income producing asset then this will be somewhat offset. If it was used to purchase an asset that is likely to increase in value then a benefit will likely be realised in the future. The aim of course, is

for these gains to justify the reduced cash flow in the meantime.

A problem that needs to be avoided is where servicing debt makes us unable to meet other goals. If we have high levels of debt, or debt with high interest rates, or both, this can result in us not having enough cash flow. This can become a spiralling problem as the way to meet this shortfall is often more debt.

Unsecured loans such as credit cards and personal loans usually have high interest rates; some credit cards have interest rates well above 20 per cent.

Interest costs and repayments on these loans can cause strain on cash flow with relatively low balances.

In a perfect world we would like to avoid these debts altogether. Unfortunately though, circumstances, whether they are due to our own doing or not, mean that at times most of us accumulate some unsecured debt. If this is the case we need to find a method to reduce this debt.

If we are able to secure this debt against an asset, preferably a property, then the interest rate will be reduced significantly.

The loan should be able to be repaid quicker and will also free up cash flow to meet lifestyle costs and other goals.

If this is not an option, moving credit cards to a personal loan is likely to reduce interest costs and, depending on the term of the loan, is likely to reduce impact on cash flow. Importantly, this will also

provide an end date on the debt.

Secured debts such as mortgages, even with much lower interest rates and longer loan terms can cause similar cash flow issues if we overcommit. Usually when we acquire these sorts of debts we can afford to service them. But things change.

The two most common reasons are, increases in interest rates and changes to our circumstances with events such as starting a family or changing jobs being good examples.

Being aware of these risks and having plans to address them is important. If these debts start impacting cash flow to the point where desired lifestyle can’t be met, the likely result is more debt and that spiralling problem.

A great marketing team is behind the latest craze in fitness watches and activity trackers with sales increasing 110 per cent over the last 12 months.

health you need to set realistic goals. If you have no chronic health conditions and want to lose an amount of weight, you may need more than 10,000 steps to achieve your goal. However, if you have chronic arthritis and cannot walk 10,000 steps you may need other exercises such as swimming.

Have you ever wondered why your dog destructively chews?

All dogs chew from time to time but did you know that there are plenty of ways to occupy them so they don’t chew on your shoes or mobile phones?

Chewing is one of the most common and frustrating problems that dog owners encounter. Dogs will often become destructive when they are bored.

Boredom can occur if dogs are not given enough ways to release their energy and occupy their minds. Other causes of chewing are exploratory behaviour and anxiety.

It is important that you engage in regular activities with your dog to provide social, physical and mental enrichment. Dogs also thrive on routine and will generally look forward to their daily walk, run or ball/frisbee game. High energy dogs and working breeds may need more strenuous exercise to keep them interested.

There are many options like flyball, agility training or swimming.

Toys are a fantastic way of occupying dogs when they are left alone. Select toys that are appealing to your dog. Play toys should be big enough that they cannot be swallowed and not harmful or toxic if broken apart. Toys that have an interesting texture, scent or sound may

help to maintain your dog’s interest for as long as possible. Toys that can be coated or stuffed with food are ideal. These will keep dogs entertained and they self-reward when the food is released!

Animals love to explore and you can encourage exploratory play by hiding food throughout the environment.

Tug games can also be fun and will allow your dog to burn lots of energy. It is important that toys are durable and designed for tugging games. Train your dog to release the toy by offering more desirable treats or another toy as a reward during play. Be sure that your pet shows no signs of aggression when playing tug games. If your dog becomes possessive

or aggressive during tug games, immediately stop tug games and contact your veterinarian.

Even if your dog has sufficient exercise, play and toys, it may still explore and chew household possessions. Make sure that desirable objects such as shoes, socks, mobiles, tablets and chargers are kept away from dogs when they are unsupervised. If you catch your dog chewing on something inappropriate, make a gentle sound (like a ‘whistle’ sound) to distract your dog and give it an alternative toy to chew on. This rewards your dog for releasing the inappropriate item and allows it to chew on an appropriate toy.

What a stunning little nugget this guy is, he was so happy to spend time with us out in the run and is a really well behaved dog. He sat when asked straight away, loves to play ball and would make a great addition to most families.

Bianca then explains the difference between lash styles-volume being two, three or even five lashes attached to your one lash.

For a full set the booking is made for 90 minutes and the hardest part about the whole treatment was honestly laying still for that amount of time with my eyes closed. Having a three-month-old baby I wasn’t used to such a luxury and found my eyes kept twitching as I was thinking of a million things.

With such skill and patience, Bianca proceeds to place the lashes onto my eyes with the room set to a certain temperature to allow the semi-permanent glue to dry nicely!

At the end of the appointment she combs through my new lashes with a little brush.

ANZAC Day has come and gone, yet this day is one of the most significant events in our calendar.

Fortunately, throughout Australia’s relatively short history we have been involved in few wars – something we should be thankful for. Yet, many Australian men and women have paid the ultimate price for defending our country. Many others have been seriously wounded or deeply affected by the impact of war.

While we reflect with gratitude those who served and gave their lives, at the same time there is sadness for the horror of war and the pain experienced by so many we know.

There is also the frustration of ongoing war and terror, the daily reality for countless numbers in our world. All this highlights the horrible character of war and that peace is very fragile.

Contrast this with the peace that Jesus promises.

In the Bible’s gospel of John, shortly before Jesus’ death and resurrection,

that God loves you and is in control of all things, working for your good.

But not only this; to trust God, means you have peace with God; the sure promise of sins forgiven and life eternal! No wonder Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

The good news is that today you can know this peace in your life!

Jesus says to his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Where the world’s peace is temporary, Jesus’ peace is permanent and eternal.

Jesus’ promise is that no matter what happens in your life, you can be sure

After last Friday’s elimination final against Brisbane ended at 1-1, neither side was able to find the breakthrough in extra time – sending the game to penalties.

Speaking after the match, coach Popovic said the whole team was doing it tough especially Jumpei.

“I think all the players are disappointed and he’s no different,” he said.

“Ultimately Jumpei feels responsible for missing the final penalty but it’s a team game.

“We are all disappointed, the club’s disappointed, but Jumpei will get over it.”

The Wanderers started the match on the front foot but it wasn’t until the final minutes of the first half that they managed to break the stalemate through Antonis, who converted from the spot after Avraam Papadopoulos brought down Brendon Santalab in the box.

The Roar immediately hit back after the break when Jamie Maclaren tapped home a shot that rebounded off the post.

The Wanderers endured a nervous finish to the match when they were reduced to 10 men after substitute Jaushua Sotirio was handed his second yellow card.

Popovic said the loss of the 21-year-old striker was a tough pill to swallow.

“It is a shame he got sent off because we could see that his fresh legs and speed was hurting Brisbane,” he said.

With Western Sydney’s fifth A-League campaign over, Popovic will now look to next year and which players he will bring back and which ones he won’t.

The Wanderers went through a huge rebuild last year but many experts are predicting the same won’t be done for next season.

New Mulgoa Rise fields officially open Mulgoa Rise in Glenmore Park is now home to brand new sporting fields and amenities building NATHAN TAYLOR

he local area’s newest sports facility at Mulgoa Rise in Glenmore Park has been completed and opened in time for the commencement of the winter soccer season.

The new multipurpose facility was developed to provide a range of playing fields and associated infrastructure, and can cater for a wide range of sports.

Penrith Mayor, John Thain, said the new multipurpose fields offer many benefits to players, clubs, the community and the city alike.

“The provision of new sport, recreation and community facilities such as these are essential to developing a healthy, active community,” he said.

The facility, located in the heart of Mulgoa Rise, has been developed in two stages and, apart from a range of playing fields, the site also features car parking, playground facilities, connecting pathways, a storage facility and a central amenities building.

The amenities building provides an accessible facility with changing rooms, unisex referee rooms, toilets, canteen, storerooms and an administration/first

Costing in excess of $5 million dollars, the facility has been funded from developer contributions, the NSW Government Office of Sport, Community Sport Facility Program and Penrith City Council.

With the local soccer competition starting earlier this month, Glenmore Park Football Club with its 1200 members and

108 teams will call the facility home.

When the new multipurpose facility was announced last July, Glenmore Park Football Club President Graham Moore said the new surrounds will do wonders for his club.

“For a club our size – we are the fourth biggest in NSW with 1200 registered players – we needed more fields,” he said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to start fresh and we are looking forward to it being finished.”

In September, both Penrith Junior Cricket Association and Nepean District Cricket Association will commence the 2017/2018 summer season at the venue, with competition matches for over 2000 cricketing members.

enrith Emus coach Julian Huxley says he’s happy with the progress of his side – a quarter of the way through the Shute Shield season – despite not recording a win.

After consecutive 71-point losses, the battling Emus put on their best performance of the season last Saturday, going down to West Harbour 42-13.

While the end scoreline suggests another blowout, what the final score doesn’t take into account is that the Emus were leading the Round 4 clash at Concord Oval after 60 minutes.

Speaking with the Weekender, Huxley said while he’s not in the mood for admirable losses, he was happy with his side’s commitment in defence and continued improvement.

“I know most people who have watched our games or have seen our scorelines wouldn’t think our defence is as good as it needs to be – and I wouldn’t say I’m happy with it either – but after 60 minutes West Harbour had only scored three points against us,” he said.

“I think last weekend’s performance was the first sign that we are moving to where we want to go, it was very encouraging.”

Huxley said the Emus were right in the contest until one of his players was sent off following a fight.

“There was an unfortunate incident with 20 minutes to go when one of our players got a red card because of a blue,

which was probably an over reaction from the referee,” he said.

“If you are the third man in under any circumstances you are always going to cop it.

“After we lost the player, the guys were hanging in there really well but just ran out of steam towards the end, and that was disappointing.”

This Saturday the Emus return to Nepean Rugby Park to battle the midtable Southern Districts at 3pm.

With this year’s tournament being held on the eve of the Australian Open, organisers are hopeful top golfers from around Australia and the world will take part.

“The 2017 NSW Open will once again be an ideal lead-in event for golfers immediately before the Australian Open,” Golf NSW Chairman, Andrew Tharle said.

“Fans of the sport will be treated to two weeks of world-class tournament golf in our nation’s greatest city.”

Golf NSW CEO, Stuart Fraser, acknowledged the support of the Championship from the western Sydney community.

“In 2016, the NSW Open attracted a field of over 150 national and international competitors as well as upwards of 5000 spectators to our state and the greater western Sydney area,” he said.

“This year will be no different; our goal is to ensure that the NSW Open grows and will always be a healthy and viable part of the Australian sporting calendar.”

Competitors in this year’s tournament will be playing for a total prize pool of a minimum of $400,000. The champion will not only lift the famous Kel Nagle Cup but they will also be exempt for the remainder of the 2017 season and the following two years on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia.

Giants slide down but still going strong They’ve lead the competition all year but that was until a shock loss to Collingwood last weekend NATHAN TAYLOR

fter spending most of the inaugural Super Netball season atop of the competition, Giants Netball have now slipped to third position following a 59-56 defeat to the Collingwood Magpies.

The Round 9 loss at Qudos Bank Arena last weekend was just the side’s second of the season and also snaps a two-game win streak without their inspirational captain Kim Green.

It was a topsy-turvy game for the Giants who battled their way into the contest multiple times, however were never able to disrupt the Magpies’ momentum.

Speaking after the match, Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald said while she was pleased her side were able to continually fight back into the contest, it was disappointing they were never able to finish it off.

“It was really frustrating,” she said.

“At various stages throughout the match we were able to launch great fight-backs, and when we got level I thought we were there. But we really didn’t do enough early on; we didn’t get any ball defensively and didn’t convert our opportunities in attack.

sure was better in the second half of the match. I’m proud of the fact that we could be five goals down against a quality side like the Magpies and fight our way back.

“I have no doubt that had the game gone on for a few more minutes we would have fought back again.”

Despite some early struggles and costly mistakes, the Giants stayed in touch with the Magpies in the opening half and were down by just two goals at half-time 31-29.

The story continued into the second half as the teams went toe-to-toe on the scoreboard, only for the visitors to find an extra gear late in the term.

Down by six heading into the final quarter, the Giants clawed their way back scoring four unanswered goals to get within two.

The Magpies quickly called a tactical timeout to stem the momentum shift, a move the local crowd wasn’t happy with.

But the break didn’t deter the Giants who kept chipping away, only to level the scores with seven minutes remaining.

Despite winning the final quarter by three goals, the Giants were unable to prevent another Magpies resurgence for the visitors to claim a three-goal victory.

The Giants will hit the road to battle the West Coast Fever this Sunday afternoon.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have continued their excellent start to the season, defeating the Maitland Mustangs 99-80 in Round 7 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

Penrith’s Sean Weekes collected 19 points while Corey Wright drained 16 in the 19-point win.

The Panthers will look to continue their good form when they take on the Central Coast Crusaders this Saturday night in Penrith.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team are back in business, defeating the Liverpool-Macarthur Razorbacks 85-51 in Round 7.

Leading the way for Penrith was Natalia Beaumont and Binta Salawu on 19 points each.

Penrith will look to continue their winning ways when they face the Hills Hornets in Round 8.
