ormer Lindsay federal election candidate Andrew Wilcox says he feels used by Clive Palmer and regrets ever standing as a Palmer United Party (PUP) candidate.

Mr Wilcox’s stunning comments come as he tries to protect his reputation over an unpaid bill to a Hawkesbury-based signwriter who printed his election corflutes.

Freestyle Signs is owed $2,475 for printing the materials for Mr Wilcox ahead of last September’s election, a bill Mr Wilcox said PUP is responsible for. PUP denies this, saying Mr Wilcox overspent a $10,000 allowance provided by the party and it was his responsibility to pay for the signs.

Mr Wilcox, a Penrith-based businessman, said PUP had agreed to pay for corflutes outside of the $10,000 allowance.

The saga over the unpaid bill has added to Mr Wilcox’s anger in relation to the fallout following last September’s election.

“I think he totally misrepresented what Palmer United stood for,” Mr Wilcox said of Clive Palmer.

“If I have let anyone down please accept my apologies as this was not my intentions.

“I have been caught in the middle of a unorganised party with the wrong intentions for the local community.”

Mr Wilcox achieved a reasonable result at the election, securing 5.2 per cent of the vote, more than two per cent clear of the Greens.

But he is unlikely to return to politics, saying the experience has left him totally drained.

While employment has been touted as a big plus for the airport, Mrs Kelly said jobs were not the “be all and end all”.

“This whole affair post-election has left me both mentally and financially drained and has caused me grief with people and businesses that supported me during the campaign, which I would like to thank again for their help and support but unfortunately some of those relationships have turned sour,” Mr Wilcox said.

Mr Wilcox said he has not heard from Mr Palmer since the election and feels that he was “cannon fodder” for his senate fight.

“It has opened my eyes up that running for politics is not for people who do not want to be career politicians and learn how to play the games,” he said.

Mr Wilcox said if PUP remained adamant that it would not pay the outstanding $2,475 to Freestyle Signs, he would provide the payment to clear the matter.

A spokesperson for the PUP said it was definitely “up to Andrew” to sort out the unpaid bill, and that the $10,000 allowance given to candidates definitely included the cost of corflutes.

The spokesperson said that Mr Wilcox attended a budgeting session in relation to the election but had overspent his allowance.

In a late development on Wednesday, radio station 2UE said it had paid the $2,475 bill via its breakfast show.

Breakfast host John Stanley said he felt for Mr Wilcox and would forward the bill to Clive Palmer.

fter a seven year hiatus from the public eye, former Howard government minister Jackie Kelly has stepped back into the spotlight and is ready to make some noise.

Defeated last week in the Liberal Party preselection process for the state seat of Penrith by sitting MP Stuart Ayres, Mrs Kelly said she is now intently focused on helping grassroots campaigns – starting with Badgerys Creek airport.

Mrs Kelly told the Weekender she has re-entered the public policy sphere after “being approached by too many people”.

“There is definitely a groundswell out there and people just really want to raise their concerns; some council matters, some state and federal,” she said.

“People have told me their concerns about there being no consultation, and I have thought, ‘that’s not how we did it in my day’.

“People are just not listening at all to their frustrations and concerns... but I am a strong believer in power to the people.”

The second Sydney airport is one of those issues.

“In 2004 there was no need for a second airport and today there is still no need.

“I have not heard a single Badgerys Creek resident in support of an airport, except for the few who believe their land value will increase. Where in this city has land value increased because of airport noise?” she said.

The former sports minister has set up a website, www.jackiekelly.com.au to kickstart her campaign, but says that other issues also pain the Penrith community.

“The WestConnex is only going to move the car park and there’s going to be a toll for the next 50 years, I can’t see how anyone wants to pay that,” she said.

“And we have many new housing estates going in but no real infrastructure. We need upgrades to the M4, the Northern Road, Mulgoa Road, Bringelly Road. And what about infrastructure for all the children who will soon be living in the area?

“I am not attacking my own party, because the damage has been done under 17 years of Labor.”

With such a strong policy platform, one cannot help but wonder whether Mrs Kelly would be prepared to take on public office again.

“I have had my go on the merry-go-round.

I have a very lovely life here in Penrith juggling children and driving, netball and rugby. But you do learn through this life what people really care about.”

I’m a chubby fella who writes a weekly opinion column and if those two things combined don’t give you a thick skin, then nothing will.

If you’ve never been the biggest bloke in the room you’ll probably never understand just how thick that skin has to be sometimes (and I do mean figuratively, not literally!).

When you look back on your school days, you can understand why some kids picked on others for something as silly as their weight. They’re kids after all, and they know no better. They don’t quite understand the social boundaries or implications that they will later in life.

What I don’t understand, and something I find myself totally uncomfortable with this week, is the finger pointing we do when we’re much older and (supposedly) more mature people.

And this time it’s not so much about the heavier set folk, but those who are accused of being too thin, even unhealthy.

Australian Fashion Week is on at the moment and there’s the usual obsession with clothes none of us would dare wear on a daily basis, being worn by people who don’t reflect the very different body types and sizes that exist in Australia and around the world.

The big debate of the week, however, has been surrounding the health of models with concerns that many of them are too thin, to the point of looking unhealthy and raising alarm bells among experts.

I really can’t believe we’re still having this debate in 2014.

I mean, seriously, in this overly politically correct world, how are designers and Fashion Week organisers still totally oblivious to the fact that something’s not right when you send girls strutting down the runway looking like some of them did this week?

I will say, however, that I’m concerned by the way this is being reported by some.

There is way too much focus on the girls themselves and too little on designers and Fashion Week organisers.

And in some cases, the stories are descending into offensive attacks on the girls themselves.

The Daily Telegraph ran a story this week on Australian Fashion Week with the headline “Shock at the parade of strutting skeletons at Australian Fashion Week”.

Wow. Just wow.

The story that follows, written by Briana Domjen and Elle Halliwell, goes on to call models appearing at the show “sickly skinny” and “waifthin”, and said that girls in one designer’s show made another designer’s girls look “well fed”.

Model Cassi van den Dungen seemed to cop much of the criticism this week, even taking to social media to post pictures of her food on Tuesday.

That is the most telling part here – the fact that she would post pictures of her meals means that she was clearly affected by the story; a story that ran with no real purpose other than to point at someone and say “we think you’re too thin”.

A hard-hitting piece putting the designers well and truly in the firing line, even suggesting a boycott of further coverage, may have been more suitable.

Journalists can have no idea if a model is eating rightly or wrongly, is dealing with other health issues or what’s going on inside their head – and they should not be the subject of what is essentially bullying by the media.

There must be a better way to deal with what is probably a very legitimate story about the modelling industry than calling people skeletons, sickly and waif-thin.

We as a society seem so quick to be offended at the smallest of things, yet we’re quite happy to point fingers at others when it suits us.

Time for some perspective, folks.

n understaffed Local Area Command, little foot traffic and a high cost of living are factors contributing to the suffering of businesses in St Marys and Werrington, according to shop owners.

NSW Shadow Treasurer, Michael Daley and Labor candidate for Londonderry, Prue Car met on Thursday, April 3, to speak with local businesses about their economic struggles and ask their opinion on what can be done.

For businesses in Victoria Street, Werrington, the hot topic was high crime rates, which business owners believe need to be reduced before business can improve. “They are not getting their fair share of police,� Mr Daley said. “People in Werrington, they like the area – it is a good area to live in, a good area to raise a family – but some of the people there, including the businesses, said that law and order is an issue. St Marys Local Area Command is under [staffed] – police numbers in this area are down.�

Top St Marys cops honoured Worthy community recognition for boys in blue at annual awards night

onstables Daniel Peen and Daniel Hadley have been named St Marys Local Area Command (LAC) Police Officers of the Year, recognised for their skill in the job and dedication to protecting the local community.

The 2013 award ceremony, held on Wednesday, April 2, marked the fifth year of officially praising local officers for work that often goes unnoticed by the St Marys community.

Constable Peen was nominated for recognition by a member of the community, and Constable Hadley was nominated by fellow officers.

The officers were two of 10 finalists who shared their stories with those who attended the night, speaking of moments of fear, valour and relief.

Neither were expecting to win the award, describing it as an honour, and thanking their colleagues for their support.

“I couldn’t do this job without the help of everyone around me. It has been a great couple of years for me,” Cons Peen said.

The awards are anticipated by the local policing community each year, as receiving recognition and praise is often rare in their line of work.

“There were 35 officers nominated for these awards and they have come from a cross section of the command, which is an indication of the calibre of work being undertaken by St Marys Police.”

The award ceremony was attended by many officers in support of their friends as well as distinguished guests, including Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler and Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione.

“This job has many, many challenges.

Cops just can’t be bystanders, they can’t be observers that stand by on the sideline, watching and waiting for developments.

Each and every officer that has taken their oath must get involved – they get involved in matters that many people would actually prefer to avoid,” Commissioner Scipione said.

“Much of the work that the police do goes unheralded, and that’s the reality however, one of the truest measures of the value of the type of work that they do is recognition through the community that we serve.”

The annual awards are organised each year by the Rotary clubs of St Marys and Wallacia/Mulgoa, in conjunction with St Marys LAC. Nominations for the next awards will open later this year.

Police snapshot Scruffy looking man steals woman’s money

Lucky escape for residents after unit block fire

Penrith Police are on the hunt for a man who threatened a young woman with a makeshift knife. At about 4.15pm on Monday, April 7, an 18-year-old woman was in a car park on Allen Place when she was approached from behind by an unknown man. He produced a weapon, demanding she hand over her money. The woman produced the money from her wallet and handed it to the man, who fled in the direction of High Street. He has been described as being about 40-years-old, of Caucasian appearance with reddish, brown hair and a beard. He has been described as scruffy in appearance.

A number of people had to be evacuated from their homes last week after a fire tore through an electrical meter room in an apartment block. A woman living in the unit block was awoken at about 3.20am on Thursday, April 3, to banging noises. She noticed an amount of smoke in the unit block and outside before waking up other residents. They found the electrical meter room engulfed in flames. All residents were evacuated, whilst fire and police officers attended. The fire was extinguished at 4.50am. No-one was injured in the incident and according to police, there doesn’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

Police find cannabis in bush at Cranebrook

Police ask drivers to cover their loads

Police have seized and destroyed $5,000 of cannabis plants growing in bushland near Cranebrook. At about 11.50am on Thursday, April 3, police attended an area 30 metres east of a track running off Soling Crescent, Cranebrook. There, they located five cannabis plants, each about 45cm tall. Police say that it was clear a person or people had been caring for the plants, assisting their growth. All plants were seized by officers.

Police are continuing to make enquiries.

Anyone with information should contact Penrith Police.

Police have issued a warning to local residents to secure and cover their loads after a number of cars closely avoided an accident last week. A number of vehicles were travelling south on Mulgoa Road at Mulgoa, when they were passed at around 12.15pm on Wednesday, April 2, by an unknown utility. As the vehicle passed the cars, a number of cardboard boxes fell from the tray. The other drivers had to use evasive action to avoid colliding with the boxes or with other cars. Fines apply for drivers with uncovered loads.

Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002 This approval applies only to rural zoned properties in Wallacia, Mulgoa, Kemps Creek, Mt Vernon, Londonderry, Llandilo, Castlereagh, Berkshire Park, Cranebrook, Orchard Hills, Luddenham, Agnes Banks, Badgery’s Creek and Regentville.

In accordance with the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002, Penrith City Council hereby grants general approval for burning in the open of dead and dry vegetation that originated on the property where the burning is to be carried out. This approval is restricted to the suburbs nominated above and to single land parcels that are 4000 sqm (one acre) or greater in area.

If your property falls within the NSW Fire Brigade area, a Fire Permit must be obtained from the NSW Fire Brigade prior to the commencement of the burn.

This approval is granted subject to the provisions of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002 and the following conditions: 1. Only dead and dry vegetation, where the vegetation originally grew on the same property shall be burnt in accordance with the Rural Fire Service ‘Standards for Pile Burning’ June 2003; www.rfs.nsw.gov.au 2. All fires are to be pile burns where the pile is not to exceed 2 metres in length or width, and must not be greater than 1.5 metres high. Any logs over 150mm in diameter are not be added to the pile.

3. Burning under this approval must at all times be carried out by such practicable means as are necessary to prevent or minimise air pollution.

Burning should not be carried out during periods of high wind or when the weather conditions are likely to cause smoke impacts on sensitive receptors such as schools, nursing homes, childcare centres or other residences.

4. All reasonable measures should be taken to ensure that the material being burnt is not wet or green.

5. Only dead and dry vegetation is to be burnt.

Plastics, rubber, chemical and pesticide containers, and the following specific prohibited articles are not be burnt: (a) Tyres, plastic coated wire, paint/solvent containers and residues; (b) Timber treated with copper chromium arsenate (CCA) or pentachlorophenol (PCP) or painted timber; (c) Grass clippings and leaves are not considered suitable due to the excessive smoke and alternative methods of disposal should be sought.

nternational athletes are in the final stages of preparation for the Canoe Slalom World Championships but there is just one problem: cash flow.

Penrith is set to host the World Championships for the Juniors and under 23’s from April 23 to 27, however, Australian Canoeing is in desperate need of financial support from local businesses.

The world class event is currently $100,000 short in funding according to Australian Canoeing CEO, Greg Doyle.

“The World Championships will be a fantastic event at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium and we have nearly 300 competitors from 34 countries coming to Penrith, not to mention coaches and support staff and spectators,” Mr Doyle said.

“But hosting such a large event does cost quite a bit, which is why the budget is in deficit.”

Operations Manager, Mary Macaluso, said that the event is costing approximately $700 an hour, with five days of competition and a further four days of training.

“We have Yogurtland on board who will be setting up a stall and offering samples, so there’s lots of opportunities for other

In NSW, the number one cause of death in children aged 0-5 is drowning.

Council is about to start inspecting swimming pools and spa pools for compliance with pool legislation which recently changed. The Act now requires all pools capable of holding 30cm or more of water to be registered and meet certain requirements.

Man injured on construction site A man who fell three metres onto concrete at a construction site in Emu Plains last month took himself to a local medical centre, despite having a severe fracture requiring surgery.

The man was working on the construction site on March 21, when he fell through a ceiling space and onto the concrete floor below, severely fracturing

his left upper arm. The man suffered a compound fracture and was unconscious for a period of time.

He transported himself to a nearby medical centre, where staff called ‘000’ and ambulance paramedics from Penrith attended. He was stabilised and transported to Westmead Hospital where he underwent surgery.

enrith MP Stuart Ayres will be contesting his seat at the next State election after being preselected last week.

Mr Ayres was challenged by former Federal Lindsay MP, Jackie Kelly but the candidacy was awarded to him in a convincing pre-selection vote, 60-22, last Wednesday night.

The current Fair Trading Minister said that he was glad to have been endorsed.

“I am happy that the Liberal Party has endorsed the work that I have been doing for the last four years and has selected me to be the candidate,” he said.

“We will continue to work hard for the people of western Sydney.

“We have already significantly improved the service delivery at Nepean Hospital... and education and health remain critical areas that we are focused on, as well as jobs creation.”

Ms Kelly declined to comment on the internal workings of the Liberal Party preselection process.

There have been calls from within the party to reform the pre-selection process and make it “more democratic”, however, Mr Ayres said that reform is not needed.

amily business Bevilles has announced that the company has entered into voluntary administration, casting doubt over the future of the Penrith store in Westfield.

Administrators have been appointed to examine the financial position of the business and advise on what steps should be taken to alleviate financial pressures.

According to the jewellery company, which opened in 1934, the decision has been made to ensure that the business is able to focus on delivering beautiful quality jewellery and diamonds with smaller, smarter new-look stores.

Some new look stores have already been trialed in NSW with success.

“As part of the restructure, some stores will also close. The decision on which will close will be made during the administration period,” a spokesperson said.

“Our Penrith store will continue to trade as normal and a decision on which stores will close will be made during the administration period.”

It is expected that the administration period will last between 30 to 60 days.

Councils request more time for pool checks

he State Government has increased the period of time for councils to begin mandatory inspection of backyard pools after a number of councils indicated they did not have the resources for such an enormous task.

Councils were originally set a date of April 29, 2014 to implement local programs to inspect and certify all backyard pools for properties being sold or leased.

Councils will now have an extra year

to implement the program, according to Local Government Minister, Don Page.

“Councils and real estate agents have requested more time to prepare properties to obtain a compliance certificate before selling or leasing a property,” Mr Page said.

“Councils, especially in areas where there are many pools, have indicated they did not have the resources to meet the deadline.’’

Penrith has one of the highest number of pools in New South Wales, well over 11,000.

Since mid-February just 70 applications for pool compliance certificates were received.

he stands of Penrith Paceway were filled on Tuesday morning as over 1,700 students from local schools gathered for an ANZAC Day service prior to the Easter break.

Just some of the schools involved included Surveyors Creek PS, St Nicholas of Myra, Nepean Christian School, Kingswood High School and Our Lady of the Way Emu Plains.

Showing that the sacrifices made by the ANZACs and all those who have participated in Australia’s war efforts will never be forgotten, the students watched on in respectful silence as wreaths were laid and the Last Post observed.

Students from the Australian Army Cadets also participated in the ceremonial march, whilst others made reflective speeches.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler, Councillor Tricia Hitchen and Federal Lindsay MP, Fiona Scott were in attendance for the annual event.

Mick McConnell of Penrith RSL Subbranch said the ceremony was a great success, with the students learning much about the ANZAC tradition.

“I was watching all of the kids in the grand stands and I really think they took it all in, I was extremely impressed,” he said.

Preparations are now in their final stages for the ANZAC Sunday Service being held this weekend on April 13.

Assembling at the corner of Tindale Street and Castlereagh Street, the march will then proceed at 3pm down High Street to Memory Park where the Service will be held.

“We are expecting around 2,500 people

amily Planning NSW has a new look Penrith clinic thanks to NSW Government Community Building Partnership program funding.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres joined Ann Brassil, CEO, Family Planning NSW last week to celebrate the improved facilities that include new automatic doors, improved signage and visibility.

“More than seven per cent of our clients in the Penrith LGA reported a disability so it is crucial we have appropriate access and visibility for our reproductive and sexual health services and information,” Ms Brassil said.

During 2012-13, Family Planning NSW Penrith provided comprehensive reproductive and sexual health clinical services including contraceptive advice and provision, Pap tests, STI checks and menopause consultations to 4,025 clients.

Of those clients, 60 per cent were less than 25 years of age.

“Our Family Planning NSW Penrith clinic has seen a 40 per cent increase in clients over the last 12 months,” Ms Brassil explained.

“And indications are that this figure will continue to grow making it essential for us to keep our visibility prominent in the community to make it easier for clients to find us and access our services and information.”

With the support of Mr Ayres, who is also the Minister assisting the Premier on Western Sydney, NSW Government Community Building Partnership funding was provided to Family Planning NSW to make the improvements to the Penrith clinic possible.

Mr Ayres said the Family Planning Centre does a fantastic job within the community.

“I am proud to have recommended this project for funding to the State Government,” he said.

“The improvements to our clinic could not have been possible without his support,” Ms Brassil said.

A brave fight As Troy Dodds said in last Friday’s edition of the Western Weekender (April 4), my wife Lynne had lost her 13 year war against cancer just as his story of her brave fight being almost over was published (Western Weekender March 28). She was laid to rest at a beautiful and heartfelt funeral service last Friday. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have expressed their sadness and at the same time their admiration for her struggle for life. I’d especially like to reinforce Mr Dodds’ comments in his article concerning the professionals in the health industry who have helped Lynne in her struggle. The staff of the Nepean Cancer Care Centre, especially have been truly amazing over the last seven years when Lynne was treated there.

Their compassion, dedication and professionalism are a credit to them. It is truly a blessing that the citizens of Penrith have such a well run facility available to them if they or their loved ones find it necessary to begin their own battles against this hideous disease that is cancer. And now

By providing unhealthy food and drink in our sports clubs we are sending mixed messages. It’s time we think more carefully about the kinds of food and drink we sell in our clubs and make sure that our kids are getting healthier when they’re out playing sport.

Penrith City Council is establishing a new Bushcare group in Cranebrook.

The eight other Bushcare groups in Penrith City are also looking for new members. Mayor of Penrith Ross Fowler OAM said Bushcare was a great way to meet people, while

helping to care for your local environment. “Bushcare is open to all ages and you don’t need any experience,” Cr Fowler said. “You just need to volunteer a few hours of your time each month.” The new Cranebrook Community Bushcare group will help care for Cumberland Plain Woodland bushland – which is critically endangered vegetation under both State and Federal Threatened Species Legislation. Bushcare volunteers primarily help care for sites by removing weeds and planting native plants. Council has received an application for a new shop in Londonderry. It is proposed that the existing shop at 12 Muscharry Road, on the corner of Carrington Road, be demolished and a new shop with upstairs residence be built in its place.

SW Auditor General, Grant Hehir, has recommended that both Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) look at ways to monitor fitness after discovering that firefighters are not adequately fitness tested.

Firefighters generally work in a high temperature, risky environment and may carry up to 50 kilograms of weight including protective gear and firefighting equipment.

“Fire and Rescue NSW should implement regular mandatory health and fitness assessments for firefighters,” Mr Hehir said.

“Fire and Rescue NSW should assist firefighters who fail their assessment to regain the required fitness standard and properly manage those firefighters who continually fail assessments.”

FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said he supported the recommendations in the report.

“FRNSW takes its responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of firefighters, both physically and mentally, very seriously,” he said.

The Bureau of Health Information’s survey of adult patients from April last year has revealed positive results for Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) hospitals.

91 per cent of those who took part in the survey said their overall care received was ‘good’ or ‘very good’, with over 80 per cent agreeing that doctors and nurses were always kind and caring toward them.

“Survey results such as these provide valuable insight into how our patients perceive their experience of care,” said NBMLHD Safety Office Service, Paul Summers.

“Patient feedback also helps us to identify any areas for improvement. To provide further opportunity to improve the patient experience, Patient Experience Trackers (PETs) were introduced at Nepean Hospital last year.”

Patients use the PETs, a hand-held electronic questionnaire, to provide instant feedback to the hospital.

“It’s real-time feedback that we can use to improve our services and patient care,” Mr Summers said.

ustomers stepping into the St Marys branch of the Commonwealth Bank felt like they had walked into a circus ring rather than their local bank on last Friday, as staff ‘clowned around’ for Clown Doctors.

From 9.30am, staff at the local branch dressed up with colourful wigs and bright red noses to help raise funds and awareness for the fantastic work that Clown Doctors do.

“We are delighted to continue our support of the Clown Doctors and the work they do in hospitals, helping to bring laughter to sick and injured children and their families,” said Tonia AllisonAramini, St Marys Commonwealth Bank Branch Manager.

The branch raffled off a signed and framed Mike Hussey cricket bat, raising $638 for the cause.

“International research has shown the physical and psychological benefits that laughter brings patients – this ranges from a positive impact on the immune

system through to a reduction in stress and pain,” said Doctor Peter Spitzer (aka Dr Fruit-Loop), General Practitioner, Medical Director and Co-Founder of The Humour Foundation, which runs the Clown Doctors program.

“We would like to thank the St Marys Commonwealth Bank branch staff for helping to raise much-needed funds this month. Every dollar counts and helps put more Clown Doctors in hospitals and smiles on children’s faces.”

Ladbury Avenue resident Bob Perkins has lived in Penrith for 50 years and has seen his fair share of floods.

But the recent heavy rains have renewed his concerns for Peachtree Creek, which has been obstructed by the thickets of coral trees that are considered a weed and nuisance along NSW waterways.

“Our property backs onto Peachtree Creek and it is the major waterway draining South Penrith to the Nepean River,” Mr Perkins said.

“But the creek’s waterflow is completely blocked by these coral trees that I swear grow two metres a year.

“A heavy rainfall in South Penrith could see our home flooded because the water has nowhere to go.”

A stroll along Peachtree Creek shows just how many of the invasive coral trees have grown in the last three years.

“Up behind the retirement village there is a swamp area that is certainly a breeding ground for mosquito born diseases because the water cannot drain from the area into the creek,” Mr Perkins said.

“There’s all rubbish caught up in the trees too, proof that the creek is so overgrown it cannot drain properly.”

Mr Perkins said the matter has been taken to Penrith Council many times, but the creek continues to deteriorate.

A celebratory dinner was held at Nepean Shores on Tuesday, April 1 and was attended by 88 members and guests, including nine charter members and representatives from local, state and federal government.

The club is the local branch of Zonta International, a global organisation founded in 1919 that strives to advance the status of women across the world through service and advocacy.

There are more than 1,200 Zonta Clubs located in 66 countries worldwide, and more than 30,000 members all up.

The Zonta Club of Nepean Valley was chartered in 1993 and has grown to 41 members.

ogs NSW is concerned about the long term future of their presence in the local area, with their lease on property owned by the State Government up in the air, putting a hold on vital upgrades.

Members of the organisation met with NSW Minister for Planning, Brad Hazzard and Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies this week to discuss the prospect of potentially purchasing the land on Luddenham Road, Orchard Hills.

Dogs NSW have lease of the land until 2038 after the original lease was extended last year, which has created a barrier for the organisation’s future plans.

With less than 25 years left, Dogs NSW is not prepared to commit to undertaking major upgrades or building additional facilities that would benefit the organisation greatly.

“We have been wanting to buy it forever – since the beginning, well before our time here,” said Tom Couchman, Senior Vice President of Dogs NSW. “We haven’t really conveyed this message clearly enough over the years as we have grasped for more and more time.”

oads and Maritime Services will start resurfacing 3.7 kilometres along Mulgoa Road at Mulgoa next week as part of a major maintenance program to improve road safety.

Scheduled to begin on Monday, April 14, Mulgoa Road will be resurfaced between St Thomas Road and Jerry’s Creek. Road shoulders will be widened to improve safety and drainage will be improved to reduce water on the road during wet weather.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, said the NSW Government has provided $1.36 million for the works.

“As a result of this work we will see improved safety and ensure Mulgoa Road serves motorists well into the future,” she said.

“The project is part of Roads and Maritime’s commitment to deliver safe, efficient and high quality services and infrastructure to the community and businesses of NSW.” Work will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays and be completed mid this year, weather permitting.

Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits will remain in place even outside work hours while the upgrade is carried out.

Motorists are asked to follow the signs, reduced speed limits and the direction of traffic controllers.

“If we can save children locked in their cars by their parents then we can save parents locked out of their homes by their children,” Mr Stuart said.

The service will cover the Sydney greater metropolitan area initially with Newcastle, the Central Coast and Illawarra to follow.

For a $190 annual fee, members will be entitled to eight home call outs per year for the 10 most common household emergencies. The service will be provided by qualified tradespeople who have undergone additional training to help them deal with situations unfamiliar to their particular trade.

Mr Stuart said they would aim for the same callout response time as their roadside assistance where nine out of 10 callouts were answered within a one hour period.

“We’re one of the most trusted brands in Australia and known for fast, friendly and reliable service and we want to extend that trust from the road and into homes,” Mr Stuart said.

“NRMA is going off-road from highway into the home, so if it’s broken, burst, blocked or locked, we’ll be there to help.”

fter 90 years providing emergency roadside assistance, NRMA has decided to offer emergency home assistance.

NRMA Group CEO Tony Stuart said it was something they had talked about doing for a long time.

“Members regularly contact their roadside assistance service for home emergencies,” Mr Stuart said.

“For example, an elderly couple rang us recently when their power went out and they were concerned their tropical fish might die.

“People say, if you can help with cars, what about home emergencies.”

So NRMA surveyed its members and found 59 per cent had experienced a common household emergency some time in the past 12 months that required assistance to fix.

The most common home emergencies were blackouts (58 per cent), blocked toilets, pipes or drains (49 per cent), broken or burst hot water systems (41 per cent), damaged roofs, gutters or downpipes (33 per cent) and getting locked out of home (29 per cent).

lthough it may look like graffiti, the new mural seen on Fusion Western Sydney Youth and Community Centre at Cranebrook is actually a complicated art form called street art, completed by local kids who took part in a six week program.

Through funding from Penrith City Council’s Magnetic Places Neighbourhood Renewal Community Cultural Grants Program, eight young members of the local community were recently given the opportunity to take part in ‘Art in a Can’, a street art program that concluded last week.

The program provided 18 hours of design and skill development workshops, designed to change the community and young people’s perspectives of street art.

“Kids love spray art – we wanted to demonstrate that it can be used as a legitimate form of art and creative expression in our community,” said Dorothy Knox, Fusion Youth Services Manager.

“It is our hope that through the workshops young people will appreciate and be inspired by mural street art.”

With the help of professionals from the Blue Mountains Spray Art Collective, the eight students who took part in the program designed their own spray paint works of art, which they completed on Wednesday, April 2.

Participants from ‘Art in a Can’ Ms Knox said the program had many benefits and gave the kids taking part some very helpful tips and education.

“The project gave instruction to the kids about safety, community and respect, as well as the legalities involved in this art form and instructions on creating the art itself,” Ms Knox said.

“They were very, very enthusiastic – more engaged in this program than many of our other projects.”

Former league star turned author reads to local kids at pre-school

He only retired a little over six months ago but NRL legend Scott Prince is keeping himself busy as a published author.

The former Kangaroos and Queensland halfback, and 2005 Wests Tigers premiership-winning star made a surprise visit to local pre-school, Little Cottage, in Penrith last Friday to read a chapter of his first ever children’s book Deadly D & Justice Jones: Making the Team.

The book, which is aimed at kids at primary to early high school level, is about an 11-year-old Indigenous boy named Dylan who has to move from Mt Isa to Brisbane and isn’t too happy about it.

As soon as Dylan arrives at his new school he meets his new teacher and principal and finds that they have one thing in common – footy.

However, Dylan is cursed with an abnormality transforming him into a fully-grown man whenever he gets angry. The ‘curse’ proves to be a blessing when Dylan’s alter ego attracts the interest of the Brisbane Broncos during a class excursion to watch the NRL team train.

Dylan transforms into ‘Deadly D’, a star player with the fire to rival even the great Prince. But he also must try and keep his ‘curse’ a secret.

Speaking with the Weekender, the former Broncos and Titans halfback said he was encouraged to co-write the book by his daughter’s former teacher and the book’s co-author Dave Hartley.

“It all started five years ago when my eldest daughter’s teacher wanted to get in touch with me about doing a book together,” Prince said.

“I wasn’t too keen on the idea to start with because I’m quite a private guy but I ended up coming around after Dave cleverly snuck the first two chapters into my daughter’s lunch box for me to read.”

Scott Prince is not only an author these days, he’s also carving out a successful media career and is working with Fox Sports on its 2014 rugby league coverage Prince said he wanted the book to have positive messages for children but at the same time have fun along the way.

“When I grew up all I ever wanted to read was basketball stories about Michael Jordan. I thought writing about rugby league would be the perfect way to engage children,” he said.

An initiative to simultaneously tackle youth employment and environmental conservation, Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, said the local Green Army project will make a real difference by working with young Australians aged 17 to 24-years-old.

“The Green Army will be Australia’s largest ever team supporting environmental action, building to 15,000 young Australians by 2018,” Ms Scott said.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for local organisations to engage young adults across Penrith and St Marys in a unique environment and conservation project.

“The Coalition announced prior to the election it would commit a total of $15 million towards a Cumberland Conservation Corridor and I am pleased we are delivering this project to maintain an important environmental asset which has a direct effect on the quality of life across western Sydney.”

While she meant this as a reflection on life in general, I think we can take heed of this advice in business as well.

Think about all the luxury car advertisements you see

on television. While they may include some specifications about the car, the majority of the images you see, and the music and words that you hear, tell you very little about the mechanics of the car, but are instead designed to elicit a feeling. The car company wants you to feel good or excited or even envious when you view their advertisement.

Generally when we respond to advertisements, it is because

of the way they make us feel.

If the music is really annoying, we might remember it but we might not like it. If there is an overload of information, we might retain some of it, but long term the message is likely to be lost.

What does this mean for you in your business? It means you need to work hard at ensuring that every contact a customer (or potential customer) has with your business is positive.

The campaign has picked on PBA’s key advocacy issue about the lack of jobs in the region suggesting that western Sydney has 200,000 less jobs than required to meet the needs of its workers.

Other worrying statistics highlighted in the campaign include: one GP doctor servicing 1049 people in western Sydney compared with one per 754 residents in Sydney’s north, east and south; the total annual vehicle kilometres travelled for south-west and outer west of Sydney grew by 23 per cent over the past two decades, compared with the rest of Sydney which grew by an average of 2.3 per cent; western Sydney receives less than one per cent or just $3 million of the $311 million NSW arts budget; and only 28.5 per cent of people aged between 25 and 34 have university qualifications, compared to 50.6 per cent for the rest of Sydney.

Lexus is leading the luxury vehicle market with the standard fitting of potentially lifesaving visibility equipment.

Updates to its CT 200h hybrid luxury hatch will specify it with a reversing camera as a standard fitting, bringing it in line with the rest of the Lexus range.

Lexus is the first luxury marque to offer the technology as standard across the full complement of hatch, sedan, convertible, SUV and 4WD models.

Lexus Australia Chief Executive, Sean Hanley said that standard fitment of reversing cameras is a part of its commitment to providing the best safety technology for its customers.

“Lexus’ commitment to visibility and relating to safety is well documented, with Lexus IS, GS, RX and LX taking five-star ratings in NRMA reversing visibility studies,” he said.

“Realising the potential visibility shortcomings of larger vehicles, Lexus was the first Australian marque to offer reversing cameras as standard on an SUV, with its RX 330 in 2003.

“Additionally, Lexus is continually developing and offering new exterior vision technologies including the front, rear, left and right view cameras fitted as standard on LX 570, as well as the availability of wide-view side cameras on RX.” The revised CT 200h will be available from this month, bringing new styling, an improved body structure, revised suspension and new equipment specifications.

Pioneering technology is being developed to give Land Rover drivers a digital vision of the terrain ahead by making the front of the car ‘virtually’ invisible.

Cameras located in the vehicle’s grille capture data used to feed a Head-Up Display, effectively creating a ‘seethrough’ view of the terrain through the bonnet and engine bay, breaking new ground in visual driver assistance.

The technology, named Transparent Bonnet by its creators, enables a driver climbing a steep incline or manoeuvring in a confined space to see an augmented reality view capturing not only the terrain in front of the car but also the angle and position of the front wheels.

“We believe the next 25 years will

be the most exciting and dynamic the automotive industry has ever experienced. There will be huge strides in environmental innovation, in safety and capability,” said Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover.

he Penrith City Softball Association (PCSA) U11 boys representative team are the toast of the junior softball world after winning the State Championships in Newcastle last weekend.

The PCSA boys were on fire during the two-day tournament, which was at times threatened by potentially event-ending storms.

In the lead-up to the State Championships, the boys went through every representative lead-up tournament undefeated.

They even remained unbeaten throughout the entire State Championships and grand final, where they defeated Macarthur 22-3 in seven innings.

Mal Robar, father of one of the team’s players Markus, said coach Craig Woodland played a huge role in keeping his young side grounded throughout the season.

“The coach is very experienced and earns the team’s respect very early on. He gets the boys to respect each other and bond as a unit,” Mr Robar said.

HARNESS RACING // Lorraine Pozza LAST THURSDAY night Penrith Paceway held its Celebrations of Fifty Years of Harness Racing in Penrith. Among the guest list were as many as possible of those who were associated with the first registered meeting that was held in April 1964.

As can be expected it was an evening that was highlighted by the reminiscing and telling of many tales and experiences that were a part of those early days.

Penrith Harness Racing Club can indeed be proud of the way it has progressed and nurtured its Club and facilities to the point where it is recognised as a leader in the field of Harness Racing.

The racing was also excellent and the first went to favourite Major Megs ($1.80), with driver Mat Rue taking him straight to the lead and never giving his backers any cause for worry.

Mysterious Bliss ($3.00) gave Kerry Ann Turner the first of a driving double in race two – once again leading all the way with

runner up Storm Cruiser coming from midfield to issue a belated challenge.

Quick Jet ($3.00) with driver Bruce Birch from gate two was soon in front and although runner up Proven tried hard on his outside he was no match in the third.

Gotta Go Party ($2.10) continued his good form in race four and with Jim Douglas driving was much too good for Port Kembla who sat behind him.

Macy Supreme ($4.20) overcame his back row draw in race five and Jarrod Alchin got him midfield before finishing too well in the run to the judge.

Mysterious River ($3.30) gave Kerry Ann Turner her driving double in race six. She was three wide early but moved forward to lead and then gave nothing else a chance.

Rob Morris took out the driving honours in the last two races. In the seventh he won with Redbank Harry ($4.20). In the last Rob had his mount Waste of Time ($2.10) take the lead after just 400m.

The Wallabies’ upcoming stay in Penrith will be part of a five day rural road trip, known as the ‘Bush2Bledisloe’, an initiative created by coach Ewen McKenzie that will also take in other western NSW towns including Dubbo, Orange and Bathurst.

The Bush2Bledisloe will bring passionate local rugby supporters closer to the national team than ever before with a range of community activities planned including the chance to meet their Wallabies heroes, watch them train as well as see and hold-up the prestigious Bledisloe Cup. “A lot of test matches the Wallabies play are in big venues and in major cities. We are a team that travels the world a lot but it’s important we don’t become dislocated with our fan-base,” McKenzie told the Weekender.

“Western Sydney is a very important part of the rugby community and as we go further west, it’s the same thing. We expect these people to turn on their TVs or drive into the city to watch us play, so there’s no reason for us not to go out there and return the favour.”

The Bush2Bledisloe road trip will also offer McKenzie’s squad a vastly different working environment as they prepare for the Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship and the all-important Bledisloe Cup Test against the All Blacks in Sydney on August 16.

“If you continue to repeat the same processes over and over again you can’t expect to get a different result, so I’m excited to be taking the playing group outside their normal confines as we prepare for the opening Bledisloe Cup,” McKenzie said.

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu believes his side’s over confidence leading into last weekend’s match against West Harbour was their ultimate downfall.

After a positive opening round where they gave last year’s champions, Sydney Uni, a run for their money, the Emus went into their clash against West Harbour far too complacent and were thrashed 57-19.

“The boys didn’t turn up mentally for the first 30 minutes, it was 38-nil at the 30 minute mark,” Tu’ipulotu said.

“I think the boys went into the game complacent after their good result against Sydney Uni. They saw West Harbour lose the other week to Warringah and thought they had it won before they went out onto the field.”

The only positive out of the match was Emus rookie fullback Jerome McKenzie who saved four certain tries as well as having a hand in a try that got the Emus on the board.

This Saturday at 3pm the Emus return to Nepean Rugby Park to take on the undefeated Eastwood who thrashed their opposition in Gordon last week 70-12.

“We have to work harder at training this week and make sure we are physically and mentally prepared,” Tu’ipulotu said.

Harry Kewell could well be the best player Australia has ever produced, but opinions are split

From the heart of Sydney’s west, to saying goodbye for Melbourne Heart, Saturday will be a sad day for Harry Kewell and Australian football.

Our greatest ever? That’s a debate that will outlast any M5 traffic jam. At his peak, he’s the best I saw, but the shame was, his peak was in his younger years, not throughout his whole career.

Bursting onto the scene as a kid from little ol’ Smithfield with Leeds United, he made the English wish he was English.

He actually could have been, were it not for Eddie Thompson capping him at 17, getting him into the Socceroos jersey.

His most indelible moments came in a national team jersey, three of which stand out.

In 2003, when he made Rio Ferdinand look decidedly average as we turned over England 3-1 in London.

In 2006 at the World Cup where he was the right man in the right spot as the ball dropped to him in Croatia’s penalty spot, slamming us into the Round of 16. How different that tournament may have been.

Then at the Asian Cup in 2011, stubborn Iraq, who always lift for us, finally beaten by a Harry header in extra time.

It truly is a shame we didn’t see more of it on a constant basis.

Opinion is divided on the bloke, especially outside Australia.

Greedy, money hungry, soft, are a few of the regular appraisals.

It’s almost impossible to change perception once it’s out there and so it proved for Harry, despite the fact he had 13 operations through his career. That would break many players, so the ‘soft’ call isn’t exactly on the money.

The review of a career isn’t always fair either. Do you base it on what they have achieved – in Harry’s case, plenty – or what they could have, given the talent at their disposal?

I’ll go the former. Still, it’s a pity Harry Kewell is soon to be former as well, as a footballer.

We’ll miss watching him.

Sorry Harry, we’re set to ruin your party It’s our last game of the regular season this Saturday night against Melbourne Heart and it’s probably our most important of the year for a number of reasons.

We’re currently in a position where we are sitting second on the table and it’s completely up to us where we finish on the table. We don’t want to have to rely on mathematics or other results – we want to make sure that top two spot is ours.

I think we played some decent football against Brisbane last weekend. We showed some real character, especially in that second half to come back.

It’s quite obvious what we have to get done on Saturday.

Our form lately has been very up and down. We’ve put in patches of performances, and for a few games there were having fantastic first halves but fell apart in the second.

Mentally we are close to where we want to be, we have had a lot of games in a short amount of time but we now understand how to deal with both the A-League and AFC Champions League at the same time.

While Saturday is all about winning to secure that second spot once and for all, it will also be a mate of mine’s final football game, Harry Kewell.

Harry is the greatest football player Australia has ever produced and it will be a big day for the Heart. I would love nothing more than for him to finish on a high but we want to ruin his party. It’s a shame we have to play him in his retirement game.

Harry and I were in the Socceroos squad for the 2006 World Cup and I had a lot do with him during my time at Melbourne Victory. He’s a modest but hard working guy and it seems when you’re at the top, people always try and bring you down. But if you get to know Harry as a person he is a champion bloke and always gives 100 per cent.

Harry’s a good honest person, a good mate of mine but on Saturday we need the three points more than them.

Wanderers control their own destiny heading into final regular season match ELISHA PEARCE

T

he Wanderers’ final match of the regular season sees them play Melbourne Heart with a second place finish on the line.

Going into round 27 the Wanderers are holding on to that vital second place on the ladder, even on points with Central Coast Mariners, but far enough ahead on goal difference to control their own destiny.

The Mariners play Brisbane Roar in the final round. It is unknown whether the Roar may rest a few players; making life easier for the Mariners.

The other lurking threats to the Wanderers earning a finals leg up are Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory who play Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix respectively.

If Wanderers or Mariners slip up either side could leap frog into second place on the ladder.

Even though the competition is for second – the Roar sewed up the championship rounds ago – and there are finals to decide the A-League champions, there’s an English Premier League feel to the final

day. This time it’s spread over a weekend of compelling viewing.

With so many possible permutations the coaches that keep their side settled will probably see the best results.

In a close league, focus and being able to concentrate on the task is often enough to ensure things go your way.

The Wanderers may be playing lowly Heart but a win is far from assured.

A good example is last week’s game that saw Victory and the Jets finish in a closely fought draw.

Victory never got into the game mentally and as a result looked sluggish, disjointed and rarely had the commitment required to properly pass and move.

They secured a draw but it was not the result they needed and probably one that flattered Victory who looked second best all night.

On top of the parity that has ruled this year’s A-League, the Wanderers go to Melbourne for a fixture that will double as Harry Kewell’s last professional match.

Such a great of the game will no doubt be honoured at the game and his side will want to put in a performance befitting his final match.

Last weekend saw the Wanderers put in a strong shift against this year’s best team – albeit without the presence of their striker, Bershart Berisha.

The team looked lively from the beginning, which meant they contained a strong opposition midfield.

At times the defence was leaky and that allowed the Roar to eventually score off a second chance in the box. Ante Covic was also strong at the back, making some good saves.

Tomi Juric was the man who finished a swift move, showing the Wanderers at their best, to tally the final goal. Many expected the Wanderers to score a few more times, especially on a great chance that Juric pushed wide.

A highlight of last week was the festivities for marquee Shinji Ono’s last regular season home game. He was greeted with confetti at the team announcement and then during the 21st minute – 21 is his jersey number – the crowd held up masks, cheered, fireworks were let off and then everyone bowed.

His confidence and experience will still be vital to the Wanderers, even as his time with the club nears the end.

Photo: Melinda Jane A draw against the competition leaders is a good result for a Wanderers squad still juggling a tense Asian Champions League group stage.

It is important the men in red and black successfully negotiate a tricky last round this weekend. A week off in the first round of finals would be a huge boost to a Wanderers squad playing at its limits.

Scoring an early goal would be an excellent way to silence the away crowd and put any jittery players at ease.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers Men’s Waratah Championship League side have gone back to back, defeating the Hornsby Spiders in a thriller 93-87.

Louis Brant was Penrith’s best scoring 18 points and collecting 10 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s team failed to back up their good performance from last week, going down to the Spiders 64-48.

Best in a beaten bunch was again Rohanee Cox who top scored with 18 points and 16 boards. Both sides will now play Manly Warringah Sea Eagles this Saturday at Penrith Sports Stadium with the men tipping off at 4pm followed by the women at 6pm.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have been hammered in their second game of the season 87-38 by the Balmain Tigers.

This Saturday the Rams will look to improve on last week’s debacle when they meet the Illawarra Lions at Greygums Oval at 2pm.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 8 of the junior rugby league representative season took place last weekend with some shocking results for both the Penrith Panthers and Western Sydney Academy of Sport sides.

In the Harold Matthews competition Penrith were thrashed by Newcastle 40-0 while WSAS were also hammered by the Roosters 36-8.

In the SG Ball competition Penrith lost a tight one to Newcastle 36-30 while WSAS were left embarrassed by the Roosters 36-0.

BODYBUILDING: Penrith’s Mark Grech has become the first Australian bodybuilder to ever win four consecutive International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Australasian titles.

Throughout his career, Grech has won the novice, under 80kg, under 90kg and now the under 100kg category.

Grech has been selected to represent Australia in the IFBB Amateur Olympia to be held in Germany later this year.

t may have taken them more than a decade but the Penrith Cricket Club have finally won another premiership after their Fifth Grade side demolished Manly in last weekend’s grand final.

After finishing the regular season in first place some 16 points clear of their nearest rival in Sutherland, Penrith began their finals campaign in rather shaky style, losing their quarter final to Randwick Petersham.

After a hard fought second chance semi final win against Sutherland the week after, Penrith were primed and ready going into last weekend’s all important decider at Manly Oval.

Penrith captain Chris Withers, who took three wickets in his side’s 166 run demolition of Manly, said his side went into the game full of confidence.

“We only dropped three games all year including that opening finals match against Randwick Petersham. Our semi final against Sutherland, who finished second, was our grand final, basically. We knew if we could win that one we would do well against Manly,” the 24-year-old said.

Withers revealed a pre-game tip off to bowl first due to moisture on the pitch from recent rain proved pivotal in Penrith dismantling Manly for just 51.

When Penrith eventually hit the crease on Saturday afternoon they were well and truly on their way to a resounding victory, led by batsman Paul Williams who scored a career high 90.

“We couldn’t ask for a better outcome than getting them all out in a grand final for 51. We definitely caught them by surprise,” Withers said.

But Withers kept his side focused despite how positive it was looking.

“I told the boys there’s a lot of pressure in grand finals because anything can happen,” he said.

“When we got Manly out I told them the job was only half done and that we should take our time and not hit silly shots.

“It was a big relief to win because last year we lost both semi finals after finishing third, it was shattering. I told the boys to live the win up.”

Penrith’s premiership win is the first for the club since their third grade side won back in the 2002/03 season.

Withers said his side, which is made up of both youth and experience, grew closer as the year went on, making the grand final win particularly special.

“We have a few senior heads but our youngest is 14 as we have some 16 and 17-year-olds.

It’s a big age gap but as a team we’ve gelled and that’s what got us through the year,” he said.

“We’re like a little family. Everyone came out of their shell and grew in confidence throughout the year.”
