$1 billion redevelopment will deliver the Nepean Hospital we desperately need EMILY NEWTON
eing touted as the investment that will “finally get Nepean right”, the hospital is entering an exciting time as visions become reality. The over $1 billion redevelopment of Nepean Hospital will transform the heart of the local health network, says Chair of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (LHD) Board, Peter Collins. “This is catch up time and this is closing a big gap that has emerged, particularly over the last decade,” he said. “I am deeply concerned that that gap was allowed to happen, that the funding didn’t really match the exploding demand of what is real western Sydney.” The development, which will see a new clinical services block, expanded Emergency Department and at least 12 new operating theatres, is the biggest construction program in health currently happening in the state. “What we are going to end up with in five years’ time is a hospital as good as you will find anywhere in Australia with the full suite of services,” Mr Collins said. “We’re going to have very established areas of medical research where it will be our ambition to lead Australia and be out
B
there as a world leader in certain categories. For every doctor or nurse we’ve got out there on a ward, we’ve got to have good administrative back-up. “If I were looking for fast-track medical, academic or administrative opportunities, I would be looking at Nepean more than any other hospital in NSW.” As the upgrade continues and the workload increases, more jobs will be generated out of Nepean, with vacancies already becoming available in careers like medical coders, which Mr Collins sees as perfect for a millennial with an interest in coding. He said the upgrade of Nepean will provide support and relief to the whole health network. “We want to be accessible, we want to be affordable and we want to be the best at what we can do,” Mr Collins said. “What’s been announced will enable us to provide a full range of services and really minimise the need for people to travel east to get specialist medical care. “We are increasingly conscious of the need to meet the needs of the whole LHD.” Mr Collins assured the pubic that during the upgrade, services at the hospital will be fully maintained. “Staff and patients need to work around this. We want to do it once, and we want to do it right,” he said.

Cool technology or Big Brother? he first I heard about Channel Nine losing the rights to broadcasting cricket after four decades was via an alert on my watch. Maxwell Smart, eat your heart out. The website that pushed the alert to the watch is one I visit regularly, but I only recently read their cricket stories, as the ball tampering scandal exploded. I’ve never specifically said I wanted cricket news alerts, but my sudden recent interest resulted in the notification; the very definition of a ‘smart watch’ at play. Now I actually think this is pretty cool, but others I spoke to over the weekend disagreed with me. Ever so slowly, we as a society have switched our response to smart technology from “that’s amazing” to “that’s creepy”. In the wake of the Facebook privacy scandal, fears over what data is being shared with advertisers, political parties and other organisations seems to be at an all-time high. Our trust has been shaken; and our conspiracy theories are growing stronger. Take for example a piece by Conal Hanna in the Sydney Morning Herald last week. Conal was concerned because Apple Maps, an app he doesn’t use, gave him a warning that his daily trip to a childcare centre (where he drops off his daughter) was going to be a smooth ride as traffic was light in the area. “Here is an app that I don’t use that knows not only where my daughter goes to day care, but seemingly what days she goes and roughly what time we are taking her there,” the article said. What was I saying about conspiracy theories?

The truth is that because the writer has his location settings switched on, the phone has simply picked up that they go from point A to point B almost daily. Apple knows point B is a childcare centre, hence its specific warning that the route to said childcare centre is clear. So yes, technically Apple knows there’s a trip to a childcare centre that happens daily and yes, they probably know there’s a child in the picture given the nature and time of the trip. But it’s a bit of a stretch to put that in the creepy data collection category. If you ask me, it’s marvellous innovation. If I’m sitting at home reading the morning paper and my phone alerts me to a traffic problem on my usual route that could delay my trip to work or to a meeting, I’d be grateful, not skeptical. 10 years ago, I think most of us would have thought this was amazing technology. Now we just think somebody is

spying on us and we’ve decided we’re not comfortable with it. Such is the challenge for modern tech companies. How do you innovate without being labelled Big Brother? I have no problem with being served relevant ads based on my Internet search history. If I’ve looked up 10 rugby league stories on a certain day, and the next day I’m hit with an ad for Grand Final tickets, I’m actually pretty happy. I’d much prefer that than a random ad for a cleaning company I don’t need. But again, society seems to find targeted ads creepy. Rather than embrace the fact we’re actually being served advertisements of relevance, we freak out about what an advertiser knows about us. As we’ve seen with the Facebook scandal, data can indeed be used for purposes that cross the line. This will continue to be a moral and ethical dilemma. But the end user always remains in control. Services like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram aren’t just free to use, they’re voluntary. And the privacy settings generally guide what those services can and can’t know about you, and how they use that data. I do find all the talk about privacy ironic when you consider what so many of us post on social networking sites. Our battle with exciting versus creepy is an interesting one, and one that society and tech developers will continue to grapple with in the years to come. We are right to be wary about our privacy and protecting that privacy is important and should always be in our hands, but we need to accept that evolving tech is going to know more about us than ever before.

Major search for missing man
Waste facility at Eastern Creek to be officially dumped
Missing: Tayyab Azam

embers of the No Incinerator for Western Sydney group are celebrating after a planning assessment found the proposed energy from waste facility at Eastern Creek should be refused, marking the beginning of the end for the controversial plan. Deputy Secretary for Planning Services, Marcus Ray, said the Department of Planning and Environment assessed the application on its merits.
M
“The Department has referred its assessment to the Commission and found the proposed energy from waste facility should be refused based on advice received from independent experts and government agencies, including the Environment Protection Authority and Health NSW,” Mr Ray said. Despite this win, community members have come out swinging against local Liberal MPs Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies who are both against the incinerator, saying the pair didn’t do enough to kill the proposal earlier.
“We don’t want any weasel words in western Sydney – the Premier must stand up and unequivocally guarantee that this incinerator will not go ahead,” Member for Londonderry Prue Car said. “It has been a long and hard campaign to force the Government to see the light. Let this be a warning to them that the western Sydney community will not be ignored or taken for granted.” A determination by the Commission is expected to be made within three months, but it now appears almost impossible for the facility to go ahead.

Plans set to be incinerated
Police were desperately searching for a Kingswood man on Wednesday who suddenly disappeared. 19-year-old Tayyab Azam was last seen at home about 9.30pm Tuesday. Friends reported him missing to police on Wednesday morning after he could not be found or contacted. Police have been searching the Penrith CBD area as well as the Nepean River. The Weekender understands police door knocked houses near the River looking for security camera footage. Tayyab is described as being of Indian appearance, about 170cm tall, slim build with black hair and clean shaven. He does not have a mobile phone or wallet with him and is believed to be travelling on foot. Tayyab was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, long grey pants and was carrying a khaki backpack. CBD trees removed Council has started work on the High Street upgrades, which includes the removal of trees between Woodriff and Station Streets. A total of 12 trees are set to be removed from four pedestrian crossings on High Street, with a further 13 to be removed on Riley Street as the works progress. A Council spokesperson said the decision was made to remove the trees after concerns were raised from business owners and visitors due to the ongoing issue of pollen that the trees were releasing. They will eventually be replaced with 50 new trees, which have been selected based on their size, provision of shade and sunlight, as well as for their reduction in leaf and pollen.
Huge crash shuts highway Truck and six cars involved in Kingswood pile-up
Park protected The State Government has confirmed that Hadley Park will be granted a listing on the NSW State Heritage Register. The property was once home to Charles Hadley, a pardoned convict who settled in the Castlereagh area and began building his estate within 20 years of the first fleet arriving. It has had a long association with the Hadley family who, until recently, occupied Hadley Park for around 200 years. The property on the floodplain of the Nepean River is one of Australia’s oldest farming estates and an example of one of the earliest European land grants. Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said it was “only right that Hadley Park be protected.

The crash on the Great Western Highway at Kingswood closed the westbound lanes near Bringelly Road for around two hours from just before Midday.

Motorists faced long delays with traffic diverted into Santley Crescent and Bringelly Road. No serious injuries were reported but it took some time for emergency workers and tow trucks to clear the crash, with several cars sustaining significant damage.
Investigations will take place to pinpoint the cause of the accident. Less than 24 hours later another Kingswood accident, also on the Great Western Highway, caused delays near Parker Street. Traffic updates: Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/westernweekender.

Uber-like service exclusive to women makes for a more comfortable trip EMILY NEWTON
or many women, riding alone in a car with a male stranger can trigger feelings of anxiety and discomfort. But Shebah, a female-only ride sharing service, has reached Penrith and is giving local women and children the choice of feeling safe as they travel through an app that works similar to Uber. Nicole Thompson recently became a driver for Shebah and discovered a significant number of women “just aren’t comfortable being in a car alone with a man”. “We’re in a political climate where we are really thinking a lot more about women and rising up and creating better situations,” she said. “I hear too many stories about bad things happening – whether it’s really severe or just basic harassment. “I think Shebah could reduce the amount of difficult situations happening.” Trips can be booked up to two weeks in advance and even pets can be transported by some drivers with notice. With multiple drivers already in the Penrith region, the only thing missing is passengers. “There’s lots of drivers in all corners of

the map, you’re not going to have to wait long at all for a ride,” Ms Thompson said. The service provides a way for women to travel without fear while simultaneously giving local women the power to earn some money. Shebah Founder George McEncroe said she is thrilled by the positive feedback and popularity of the alternative and niche ride service. “There is a real need for the service. I am constantly thrilled by fabulous feedback, and struck by the number of women who say, ‘if only this was around when I was young’,” she said. “In terms of opposition to the idea, it’s important to remember that this isn’t taking anything away from anyone. “Shebah isn’t denying men the ability to use any ride sharing service... it just offers an extra service for women. “Just like a Fernwood gym never stopped a man getting in shape, Shebah isn’t stopping a man getting from A to B.” Many of the drivers have child car seats available and extensive checks are done on drivers to ensure the safety of passengers. The Shebah app can be downloaded from your smartphone’s app store and more information is available at www. shebah.com.au.

ANZAC DAY 2018
Time to pause and reflect Strong turnout expected at Dawn Services in Penrith and St Marys on Wednesday LAUREN SUTTIE
ocals will have the opportunity to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have fought for the country this ANZAC Day. With the day holding a different significance for many locals, Secretary of St Marys RSL Sub-branch, Tony Fryer, said for him it was about reflecting on his own past, as well as reflecting on where Australia might be now had it not been for those people who made the ultimate sacrifice. “It’s an opportunity to catch up with people who I operated with in the military and people I can relate to better than most, as well as reflect and remember old mates that have since gone,” he said. With an estimation of 6000 people attending the ANZAC services at St Marys over the last few years, organisers are again preparing for a big turnout. Mr Fryer said both St Marys services would have a special element this year. “This Sunday, just after the march arrives in Victoria Park, there will be a collection of a small amount of soil by the Mayor and [Londonderry MP] Prue Car that will be sent into the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park,” he said.
L
The Dawn Service in Penrith last year “It will join approximately 1700 other samples, which represents soil from the locations where the men joined up to fight in the war.” The Dawn Service at St Marys on Wednesday will include a strong female
presence this year, with current service or ex-service Sub-branch female members playing the key role in running the service to show support for the ‘By the Left’ campaign, which encourages female veterans to raise awareness of their strong
contribution to the Australian Defence Force. With this year marking the end of the ANZAC Centenary, locals have been invited to join in services held by the Penrith RSL Sub-branch and St Marys RSL Sub-branch. At Penrith, the ANZAC Sunday Service will be held on Sunday, April 22, assembling at 2.30pm on Castlereagh Street, where the march will start and end with a service at Memory Park. The ANZAC Dawn Service at Penrith will be at Memory Park on April 25, assembling at 4.30am for a silent march, with the service starting at 5am. In St Marys, the Sunday service will assemble at Coachmans Park at 2pm, with a service commencing at Victoria Park following the march around 2.30pm. The annual Dawn Service on Wednesday, April 25 will commence at 5am at St Marys RSL Club. Both Sub-branches are inviting locals back to their clubs for refreshments and a game of two-up after the formalities. Other local venues that will be offering two-up and other activities on Wednesday include The Australian Arms, The Blue Cattle Dog, Jamison Hotel, O’Donoghues and St Marys Band Club. More information on these events can be found online.

ANZAC DAY 2018
He served with pride and respect EMILY NEWTON
enrith’s Lionel “Bluey” Jackson has military service running in his blood. As an eager 18-year-old with red hair and blue eyes, he joined the Army and began a lifetime of adventures. “I served in the infantry for over 30 years,” Mr Jackson told the Weekender. “I was always going to be in the Army, my family has attachments to the Army in the Boer War, World War I and World War II, it was natural that I followed on.” This year he turns 85-years-old and his family legacy continues with children and grandchildren currently serving for Australia. Having spent time serving in Japan, Korea, Malaya, Borneo and New Guinea, Mr Jackson is decorated with both medals and fond memories. Enlisting to serve led him to meet his wife Gwen Jackson, who worked as a nurse in Berry. “I went in with what they thought was appendicitis, I came out still with my appendix and a fiancé,” he said. They have just celebrated 60 years married.

On September 29, 1957, members of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment were travelling through the Torres Strait to Malaya with their families, including the newlyweds. “We had a head-on collision with an oil tanker on the way – on my birthday, actually,” he said. “We were on our honeymoon on the ship going to war. That was exciting, we all thought we were going to sink.” Passengers watched the sparks flying up into the air as the oil tanker scraped along the side of their vessel. “I said to them ‘this was nice, they’ve got all these fireworks for my birthday’,” Mr Jackson joked. For him, service was full of friendship and laughter, of men taking care of one another through hard times and unique friendships formed as families of soldiers understood one another’s struggles. His fondest memories are being with his Army family and serving as part of the infantry. “That’s where all the fun was, it’s where the action was,” he laughed. “A lot of it wasn’t fun, but they say there are two types of soldiers, those who were in the infantry and those that wish they were good enough to be in the infantry.”
Lionel “Bluey” Jackson spent over 30 years in the infantry. Photo: Melinda Jane But the challenge of war didn’t end when he retired from service after 35 years in different uniforms, as he struggled to settle into civilian life after buying a house in Kingswood. “I never really settled into ‘Civilian Street’,” he said. “The best job I ever had was driving the patient care ambulance at Nepean Hospi-

tal, taking the people down to Westmead and bringing them back. “They would tell me things they wouldn’t tell their own family. I was doing something I was seeing results for.” Now retired with his wife, the pair love travelling around Australia and look back at his time serving the country with immense pride.

Brave local Mertoun Sydney Mills died in France TROY DODDS
enrith is littered with stories of young men and women who stood up for their country and did our city proud. One of those men is Mertoun Sydney Mills, who was born on January 30, 1895 in Penrith, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Mills. The Mills family had the family business called Railway House, on the corner of High and (now) Lawson Streets. The building still stands, being one of the oldest buildings in Penrith. Mills completed his schooling at Penrith Superior Public School before attending Stott and Hoare’s Commercial College where he undertook courses in typing and shorthand. At the time of his enlistment, his occupation was listed as a drapery salesman, probably in his parents’ store. According to research provided by Penrith City Library, Mills had been a corporal in the cadets as well as a member of the militia at Penrith for five years. He enlisted on February 14, 1916, following a letter of consent from his father. Mills left Sydney on May 13, 1916 aboard

HMAT Beltana and arrived at Devonport, England on July 9, 1916. He, like most other members of the AIF, then underwent training on the Salisbury Plains. On November 23, Mills was sent to France and served in the Flanders region before being sent to northern France. On January 14, 1917, he contracted mumps and was admitted to hospital. In February, he was again admitted to hospital with boils. He rejoined his unit on February 16. Mills was attached to the Divisional Ammunition Column, whose role it was to bring ammunition and supplies to the battery positions. He was killed just after the Battle of Messines on June 12, 1917. He was having dinner when a shell hit a house and killed an old woman, a few soldiers, two children and a young girl. Mills ran to their rescue, and another shell hit and killed him. Rev James McKee conveyed the sad news to his parents. Writing to the Red Cross for more information on Mills’ death, Rev McKee stated: “Young Mills was a good boy – the only son of good parents”. In his letters home, Mills referred to meeting up with other Penrith soldiers

enrith has had many war heroes, and Stanley Colless was among our first. Born in Penrith on November 19, 1892, he received his schooling at the Penrith Superior Public School. After leaving school he was employed as a wool classer by A W Davis and Company at Liverpool. Mr Colless was a keen sportsman, and played cricket and football. He was also a member of a rifle club and won a number of prizes in shooting competitions. Mr Colless enlisted in June 1915 and was assigned to the 9th reinforcements, 3rd Battalion with the rank of Sergeant. Mr Colless left Sydney on September 30, 1915, aboard HMAT Argyllshire. After several months in Egypt, Mr Colless was promoted to Sergeant-Major and was trained in the operation of the Lewis Gun. In February 1916, Henry John Burrows (Jack) mentioned in a letter to his mother that he had seen a number of Penrith soldiers including Stan Colless. He sailed for the Western Front in March 1916. During the battle of Fromelles, Mr Colless was singled out for mention by Captain N Gibbons: “Sergeant Colless doing good work – my officers also of course. Would like you to say something to his man. He is doing splendid work”. In September 1916, Mr Colless was

ANZAC DAY 2018
ROSS FOWLER Councillor – Penrith City Council
Mayor’s News The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor
ANZAC DAY ANZACs remembered Next week we have the opportunity to pause and remember those Australians who have fallen in conflicts around the world. April 25 has become a day on which we remember not just the devastating conflict at Gallipoli, but all those who have lost their lives in war and conflict. Despite our distance from war zones, past and present, Penrith has experienced the tragic reality of war. Many of our residents served in WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam, and in recent years two Australians from Penrith lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan. For younger generations it is sometimes difficult to understand why it is with gratitude that we should remember. But we have enjoyed the benefits of the peace and easy existence which was obtained at the cost of many lives. Few of us have ever experienced what
Perhaps C.E.W. Bean said it best. In the final paragraph of Vol. 6 of his Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18 he concluded:
“What these men did nothing can alter now. The good and the bad, the greatness and smallness of their story will stand. Whatever of glory it contains nothing now can lessen. It rises, as it will always rise, above the mists of ages, a monument to great-hearted men: and, for their nation, a possession for ever.”

it is like to risk ourselves and loved ones to the dangers of war, these however are the memories for older generations of Australians. The ANZACs were courageous and although the Gallipoli military objective failed, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. If we do celebrate anything on ANZAC Day it is the legacy that in the face of adversity, the ANZACs demonstrated beyond any doubt virtues of duty, courage, teamwork, resolution and self sacrifice. Today we stand safe and free with the privileges and rights to make our own choices. We owe that freedom to those who fought, endured, suffered, and died for us and for their country. Lest we forget.

Shooting for the stars Locals encouraged to join in stargazing world record attempt next month LAUREN SUTTIE
f being part of a world record is on your bucket list, then you could have the chance to tick it off next month thanks to Western Sydney University. The ABC, in partnership with The Australian National University, will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most people stargazing – multiple venues’ next month. Joining the world record attempt will be Western Sydney University, who will be holding an event at Penrith Observatory. Education and Administration Officer of Western Sydney University’s School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, Raelene Sommer, said everyone involved was excited to see if they could make history. “We are anticipating that the record will be smashed, and it will be a wonderful experience for families in western Sydney to be a part of,” she said. This is the second time that the university will be participating in an event of this kind, after helping to achieve the current world record set in 2015 by the Australian National University, which saw 7,960 people across 37 locations participate. Astrophysicist from the Australian
I
National University, Dr Brad Tucker, said these types of events were a unique way for everyone in the community to engage with science in a fun way. “I think that it’s a cool way to get people talking and engaging with astronomy and more broadly with what we do in science in general,” he said. “There are lots of cool things happening with space and astronomy here in Australia and it’s a great way to allow people be a part of it. “Plus, who doesn’t want to break a world record?” In order to break the current record, participants will be required to stargaze through binoculars or a telescope for a 10-minute period simultaneously. But for those new to stargazing, you don’t need to worry, as the ABC have purchased 30,000 telescopes, which people will have the option to buy for just $7.15. To keep track of the number of participants, people are required to register prior the free event, which will be held on Wednesday, May 23 from 7pm. For more information or to register, visit www.westernsydney.edu.au. Do you hold a world record? We’d love to hear from you. Police Snapshot COMPILED BY EMILY NEWTON
Penrith: Chemist catches man with fake prescription
A man who was using a script from a doctor who was no longer practicing was caught thanks to an intuitive local chemist. At 10am on Sunday, April 15 a 39-yearold Guildford West man produced a prescription to be filled at a chemist on High Street, Penrith. It is alleged that the chemist made inquiries in relation to the validity of the prescription and found that the doctor had stopped practicing seven years ago. The police were contacted and attended the location. When the man returned to the chemist to collect his script, he was arrested. He was charged with ‘Possess forged prescription’ and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May 22.
Werrington Downs: Vintage car goes up in flames
A mechanical issue with a vintage car saw smoke rapidly turn to flames in the early hours of the morning. On Sunday, April 15 at about 5am the fire brigade were called to Greenbank Drive, Werrington Downs for a vehicle fire. The vehicle was quickly extinguished and police were contacted to attend the location. The owner of the car was located and informed officers that the vehicle, a 1946 Ford “rat truck”, was being driven by him around 4.30am when it had a mechanical issue. He had exited the vehicle and said that smoke and flames were coming out from under the bonnet. The fire had quickly spread, consuming the entire vehicle.
Claremont Meadows: Neighbour spots crim in bush
Hiding from police in nearby bushes didn’t help an attempted robber in Claremont Meadows over the weekend. At 8.15am on Sunday, April 15 a 72-yearold Claremont Meadows woman backed her vehicle out of her driveway and went to a nearby store. She returned to her premises in Mistle-
toe Avenue a short time later and opened the garage door. As she has done this, she noticed a man run across her rear yard and jump the fence. She immediately contacted police, who attended the location where a neighbour then alerted officers to a man who was hiding in nearby bushes. The man, a 22-year-old from Cranebrook, was arrested and charged with ‘Enter dwelling with intent to steal’ and will face court at the end of the month.
Colyton: Drama on the dance floor as woman is charged
While one woman was recovering from an injury on the dance floor, another was assaulting police. On Saturday, April 14 police were called to an incident at a licensed premises in Colyton where a patron had been injured while dancing. The woman was being placed in an ambulance when a 49-year-old Werrington woman became involved, described as making a “hindrance” of herself. She was asked on multiple occasions by both police and ambulance officers to move away. Then, when a Sergeant asked the woman to move away, the woman yelled in his face and then swung her arm at him, hitting him in the face. She was arrested and charged with ‘Assault officer in execution of duty’ and will face court next month.
Penrith: Police continue to crack down on pedestrians
Local cops are disappointed that people are still not paying attention to where they’re walking after another enforcement operation over the weekend nabbed 43 adults with pedestrian offences. On Saturday, April 14 officers issued 43 tickets for pedestrian offences, 13 for other offences including cyclists not wearing helmets and gave 34 warnings to people under 16-years-old over just six hours. The Traffic and Highway Command is expected to return in the near future, and will continue to come back until locals take pedestrian safety seriously.

In the news: Hunters Hill haircut hoo-ha A Sydney barber is being dragged before the Federal Circuit Court of Australia accused of discrimination. The action has been commenced by a woman, a lawyer, whose daughter attended the male barber’s shop in December but was refused service on the basis that she was female. The owner of the barbershop, Mr Rahim, whose business is located in Hunters Hill, says that he politely refused the request to cut the girl’s hair on the basis that he is not qualified to cut women’s hair. The complainant’s version of events is very different. She asserts that Mr Rahim simply refused because he wanted to keep his shop free of women and girls. The woman had this to say publicly about the matter: “A claim has been brought against Hunters Hill Barber Shop in the Federal Circuit Court for an alleged breach of the Sex Discrimination Act. The basis of the claim is that the barbershop refused to simply run the clippers through my daughter’s undercut, because she was a girl. I indicated to him that I did not need him to style, cut or trim the rest of her hair, which is styled in a bob”.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Reports indicate that the woman first complained to the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission, an organisation that provides advocacy for victims of all sorts of human rights issues including sex discrimination, racial discrimination, disability rights and more. As a result of the Commission not being able to resolve the matter via conciliation, the matter has now been escalated to the Federal Circuit Court for an alleged breach of the Sex Discrimination Act. It is uncertain what the claimant is seeking but it is possible that the claim will include a claim for damages (money) and some sort of public reprimand of the defendant and his business. There are varied opinions circulating about the story. One view is that the woman could have simply taken her daughter to another salon and dispensed with the melodrama. The other view is that this argument is symbolic of a far greater problem that society is grappling with, sex discrimination more generally. This case comes at a time when gender-politics and sex discrimination is at the forefront of our minds following the Harvey Weinstein fuelled, global “Me Too” movement.
Another arrest in boys’ home abuse case Detectives investigating the allegedly horrific historical abuse of children in a local boys’ home have made a second arrest interstate. Detectives are focusing on the alleged abuse of boys at the Daruk Training School between 1965 and 1985.
After months of inquiries, the detectives, supported by Queensland Police, travelled to an address on the Gold Coast on Tuesday where they executed an arrest warrant on a 73-year-old man. He is facing multiple charges and is the second person arrested in the case.

Different kind of support Show off your creative side by designing a unique bra to raise money for charity spirit to decorate an ArtyBra or ArtyTie,” Mr Ginns said. “They can run the full gamut of their imagination – paint, sculpt, stitch, construct or embellish your individual ArtyBra or Tie.” With 48 bras and ties entered in 2016, Mr Ginns said the organisation was able to raise over $10,000, with the team hoping to get even more locals involved this year. “We are hoping to get in excess of 70 entries this time round,” Mr Ginns said. “With the community getting involved in this project they will assist the work of CWS to support those living with cancer and raise awareness of the issues they face.” For more information on the ArtyBra and Tie Fundraiser or to register, visit www. cancersupport.org.au. t’s a staple clothing item that provides support to women every day, but now the modest bra is set to help women’s health in a different way. Starting in 2010, Cancer Wellness Support (CWS) has been encouraging locals to get creative by donating a decorated bra for the bi-annual ArtyBra Fundraiser. With all creations auctioned off to raise money for the not-for-profit charity, Events Coordinator at CWS, Anthony Ginns said that the event was a fun way to support a worthy cause. “The project is crucial as it raises funds used to provide continual subsidised services for a growing number of cancer clients,” he said. “The best thing about it is that it also reinforces awareness of Cancer Wellness Support and the services it provides for residents in Penrith and the Blue Mountains.” But it’s not just the women who get to have all the fun, with locals having the option to also create an ArtyTie to support those men who have also been touched by the disease. “We are appealing to artists’ creative

Surprise honour for true fighter EMILY NEWTON
ith the help of Vintage FM staff, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres left local Ann Willmington completely stunned last week with a Community Service Award for her dedication in raising funds and awareness to find a cure for brain cancer. On Friday, April 13 an unsuspecting Ms Willmington was left speechless when Mr Ayres presented her with the award. “Founder of the annual Music For Life Ball, Ann’s unwavering dedication to raise funds to find a cure for this terrible disease is exemplary,” Mr Ayres said. In 2008, Ms Willmington was diagnosed with a brain tumor and told she had about 18 months to live. Being the determined woman she is, she decided to battle the disease under the care of Dr Charlie Teo, which led her to undergo numerous surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The first Music For Life Ball was held in 2011, and since then, over $400,000 has been raised to donate to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation and the Charlie Teo Foundation. “Unfortunately, brain cancer survival
W
rates are low and treatment is difficult because it affects our most vital organ,” Mr Ayres said. “The funds raised go towards finding a cure and to assist in developing new treatments.” Knowing she wouldn’t turn up to the office if she knew about the award in advance, Vintage FM organised a cover story ensuring she was at work. The surprise went off without a hitch. “You have been a champion in the fight against cancer in this community,” Mr Ayres said. “Music For Life is a permanent fixture on the Penrith calendar, and not only does it raise money but it allows people to understand a lot more about brain cancer. “The people in and around our community need to know that the fight can’t stop until it’s completely eradicated. “This is a big thank you for all the work that you’ve done.” The Community Service Award is a way for the NSW Government to acknowledge the inspiring qualities of members within the local community for their service and achievements. This year’s Music For Life Ball will be held in Penrith on Saturday, October 27. Tickets are on sale soon.

Thanks to community I would like to thank the western Sydney community for their outstanding show of support during our recent Memory Walk & Jog event. On March 25, more than 1,000 people walked or ran in support of those living with dementia in the community. A massive $65,000 was raised, and will be used to boost dementia education services and support delivered throughout western Sydney. In the Penrith state electorate there is estimated to be 1,100 people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to an estimated 1,650 people by 2025 and 3,600 by 2056. Events like Memory Walk & Jog play an important role in raising awareness of dementia. Those who participated in Memory Walk & Jog can be confident that the money they raised will have a direct and positive impact for the members of our community who are living with dementia. Thank you also to our supporters, local volunteers and our MC Doris Younane for generously giving up her time to host the event. Planning has already begun for the next Western Sydney Memory Walk & Jog and we hope to be able to build on this year’s excellent result. MAREE MCCABE CEO, DEMENTIA AUSTRALIA

Australian Women & Children’s Resesarch Foundation
Background OZWAC – the Australian Women and Children’s Research Foundation – is a Medical Research Foundation based in western Sydney. In 1998 Professor Brian Spurrett, the Head of Women and Children’s Health at Nepean Hospital, recognised a need for a research foundation based in western Sydney. Together with Dr Chris Kohlenberg and Greg Allchin they hosted a forum to ascertain community and business support for the proposed research foundation. The response was overwhelming, reinforcing the community support for hospital-based research into the health needs of families living in western Sydney. Sadly Brian and Chris have passed away and although missed by the community the legacy of their work now lives on through OZWAC. OZWAC was established to provide for medical research into the health of women and children and draws upon community support to raise funds and also raise community awareness of important health issues. The Foundation, since its inception has supported research at Nepean and Westmead Hospitals and other research centres in New South Wales OZWAC is a community based Foundation, it is run and supported by fabulous volunteers. They do not pay any commissions for fundraising. This means that every dollar raised helps fund research. The Board of Directors provide their services voluntarily at no cost. Accounts are prepared by Astute Accounting Services and the audit is provided by Accountants Godwin Belcastro, both services are provided to OZWAC on a “pro bono” basis.
australia day award OZWAC was honoured in the 2018 Australia Day Awards for the Foundation’s contribution to the community by receiving a Community Organisation Award.

World Class Medical Research funded by Local Charity for 20 years
the reasons for research It is becoming increasingly clear that many diseases and problems, that we once thought to be caused at birth or in early childhood, actually have their origins during foetal life. Our knowledge of foetal life is limited. The more we uncover the more we realise how little we know. The more we learn the better we will be able to deal with the problems that can occur during pregnancy and childhood. The people of western Sydney will benefit in many ways from research being carried out in their area. Research opportunities will help attract the best
clinicians and academics into the area. It will also encourage pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to consider investing in the area. Over the past 20 years, many local businesses and individuals have continually supported OZWAC through donations, sponsorship of events, donation of prizes for fundraising and attendance at various fundraising activities. This valuable support has meant OZWAC has been able to fund some groundbreaking research with just under $1 million being raised for research. It is a figure that continues to grow.
research projects Some of the world class research projects funded by OZWAC: FRIENDLY BACTERIA (PROBIOTICS) SAVING TINY LIVES As a Neonatal Paediatrician at Nepean Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Sydney, Girish Deshpande has received funding from OZWAC since 2010. Probiotics are friendly bacteria which are naturally present in the gut and fight against harmful bacteria. They are found in yoghurt and cheese. Premature babies are often too unwell to be fed milk at first so they lack these friendly bacteria and they are at risk of developing a devastating bowel infection (NEC) which can be fatal or have a life-long effect on health. With the support of OZWAC, Dr Girish Deshpande has introduced routine probiotic supplementation for premature babies at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in December 2011 to prevent NEC. Nepean NICU was the first NICU in Australia to do so. In a study that lasted five years and treated more than 400 premature babies, this devastating bowel infection was almost completely eliminated from the Nepean Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This groundbreaking research has led to a major improvement in neonatal care and probiotics are now routinely given to premature babies in neonatal units all over the world. And to think this started in Penrith.
IS IT SAFE TO HAVE A BABY IF YOU HAVE ADHD? Paediatrician and Senior Lecturer with the University of Sydney, Dr Alison (Sally) Poulton has received funding from OZWAC since 2003. This has enabled her to study children with ADHD living in western Sydney. ADHD is a huge problem and one which is very common in western Sydney. Fortunately most children do well on medication. It helps them to learn at school and play nicely with other children. But there are drawbacks. It suppresses the appetite and most children lose weight when they first start medication. “With the help of OZWAC, I have been studying the long-term effects of ADHD medication (eg Ritalin, Concerta, Dexamphetamine) on growth and puberty. But, ADHD does not just affect children. Women with ADHD can struggle with running a family and having to work as well,” Dr Poulton stated. “If young women are on stimulant medication for ADHD, this raises the important question of whether it is still safe to have a baby. “My study involving 5056 women with ADHD found that having a baby appears to be safe and even continuing with stimulant medication during pregnancy seems reasonable. My study was possible because of a grant from OZWAC.”

Dr Sally Poulton discusses her research with the Premier Gladys Berejiklian THE CONSEQUENCES OF NATURAL CHILDBIRTH The Nepean Pelvic Floor Unit led by Professor Peter Dietz has been active in OZWAC-funded research since 2005. This has helped us to become the most academically productive unit in urogynaecology worldwide for at least five years running. Our research has led to a comprehensive understanding of the damage to the pelvic floor that happens to women during vaginal childbirth. This damage can lead to prolapse, urinary and anal and incontinence. With accurate assessment of the extent of the damage, we now recognise why conventional surgery may not always be curative. Clinical trials have therefore focused on providing effective surgical treatment in women at high risk of failing conventional treatment. We are also advising the NSW Ministry of Health about introducing informed consent into maternity policies. This would mean that for the first time women may understand in advance the risks associated with the passage of the infant’s head through the pelvis during childbirth. None of this would have been possible without the financial support of OZWAC and the 4D ultrasound machine they provided. THE WELFARE OF WOMEN IN EARLY PREGNANCY The early pregnancy unit at Nepean Hospital led
by Associate professor George Condous has been involved in OZWAC-funded research since 2008. Early pregnancy is a critical time for detecting problems that can be life-threatening for the mother or her baby. These include ectopic pregnancy, where the baby implants and starts developing somewhere other than the mother’s womb. If not detected early, the mother could have a catastrophic internal bleed. We have also been studying factors that may increase the risk of miscarriage. The research has now progressed to a multi-centre study with the aim of being able to give mothers an accurate prediction of the likelihood of their pregnancy ending in miscarriage. Our research, which continues to improve the management of women with early pregnancy complications, has only been possible because of funding from OZWAC. Our unit is now listed as the number three in the world in the field of ectopic pregnancy. POSSIBLE WORLDWIDE BREAKTHROUGH Professor Ralph Nanan whilst undertaking research funded by OZWAC has discovered what he thinks will “Crack the Peanut Allergy”. He has now received a Commonwealth Government grant of $1.25 million to continue this research. If it had not been for his initial grant from OZWAC his discovery would not have been possible.
On December 18, 2016 Sarah Berry was admitted to Nepean Hospital after having contractions and bleeding all night. She was just 25 weeks pregnant. She continued having contractions every four minutes 24/7 and was told she would have to remain in hospital for 14 weeks awaiting the birth of her baby. Nine days later, after still having contractions every four minutes and four separate rushed trips to the birth unit little Mackenzie Rose Berry was born at 26 weeks. She weighed just 875 grams. Mackenzie was in the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Nepean for 123 days due to severe reflux causing apnoeas, which they couldn’t stop. She tested positive for MRSA after a couple of weeks and was moved into isolation for the rest of her time there. This was very hard because she couldn’t move up in wards as she improved but then mum and dad loved it as they became very close to the wonderful nurses looking after Mackenzie. She was supposed to come home on oxygen, which mum and dad had been trained to use, but Mackenzie decided that wasn’t going to happen and she came off oxygen a week before discharge. Mackenzie came home the day before Mother’s day after four and a half months in hospital. She is now a very happy, strongwilled one-year-old who has been kicking goals since leaving hospital, even though she has had several stays back in hospital since coming home. OZWAC continues to be a big supporter of the NICU. Mackenzie at 5 days with mum Sarah

’m seeing posts from people complaining about juggling their small business and the school holidays. Here are some tips to cope. Remember you’re working Working in a job, you plan for school holidays, including days you’ll take off. Too many forget they need to treat their business as work and plan ahead. The difference is that your small business must operate when you’re not there, whereas in bigger business the urgent tasks are covered. Special interest camps and activities If your child is interested, and you can afford it, consider an activity camp. Shorter activities like ‘Apple Camp’ give you a few hours where you take your laptop and do some work while your child has fun. Swap playdates and family If you know other working parents, arrange to have the children stay at one house one day (possibly with a sleepover), and the next day switch houses. Do that two or three times in the holidays to help keep the kids entertained and give you whole day

breaks to do your work. Family visits with cousins and grandparents also work here. Manage their expectations If old enough, explain you have to work now, but in the afternoon you will do an activity with them. If they’re angels, one of those activities becomes a special one. Take your laptop or phone with you Take the kids to the park. While they run around, take your laptop or phone and get some work done (keep an eye on them!). Get them to work for you My stepson complains he’s bored but likes spreadsheets and computers. I’ve found he can do some small jobs for me. He’s doing something he enjoys (more so when he’s getting paid), it helps me a little, and I get a break from the ‘I’m booorrreeedddd’. Take a holiday yourself If you can, take some days off. It’s healthy and good bonding time for your family. Many businesses slow down during the holidays and some networking groups take a break.

TROY DODDS @troydodds
T
he subjects of rugby league’s most talked about swap deal – James Maloney and Matt Moylan – go head to head for the first time at their new clubs this weekend. But regardless of what the scoreboard says when the sun sets at Southern Cross Group Stadium late on Sunday afternoon, the judges and experts have already declared a winner. Maloney and Penrith have proven to be a match made in heaven – the old legs that many doubted in the pre-season have shown they’ve still got plenty to offer. As for Moylan, he’s still searching for his first win in Cronulla colours and is struggling to find form in a side that finds itself
decimated by injury heading into the Maloney-Moylan Cup. Paul Gallen is a definite withdrawal while Luke Lewis, Wade Graham and Andrew Fifita are all in severe doubt. On paper, Penrith should continue forward and win their sixth game of the season, especially given the Sharks still can’t quite settle on the spine they want moving forward – which is creating plenty of doubt and inconsistency in their performances. Moylan has been named at five-eighth this week with Josh Dugan at fullback as Shane Flanagan’s merry-goround continues. Matches like this, however, can often prove to be danger games – a little bit of complacency from Penrith and Cronulla’s re-shuffled side could well make the most of their opportunities. Post-match last week, both James Maloney and Anthony Griffin talked about
2GB 873 ABC 702
the simplicity of Penrith’s game plan. When the side plays simple, the points start flowing. When they make things too complicated or when panic sets in, that’s when the opposition starts to steal the momentum. A simple game plan makes even more sense when you have to deal with the injuries that have confronted Griffin’s men this season. Josh Mansour has now been added to that list and with only Sam McKendry’s injury being season ending, there will continue to be changes to Penrith’s 17 almost weekly over the next few months. Discipline may well be a key factor in Sunday’s game too. Peter Wallace and Andrew Fifita share the dubious honour of having given away the most penalties in the NRL this season (10 each), while Penrith have conceded more penalties than any other side in the competition

after six rounds (66). The Sharks aren’t far behind, sitting fourth in penalties conceded (61). That points to a potential penalty-a-thon on Sunday, but it also opens the door for one of these sides to really work on their discipline and potentially dominate possession. Penrith’s kicking game has been superb this year, even without Cleary for the last three weeks, and they should use that to their advantage on Sunday. Keep the ball in play, get energy from their defence and keep it simple in attack. Cronulla’s record against Penrith has been pretty impressive in recent seasons but this is a real chance for the Panthers to turn the tables. If they can win this one, and do it impressively, then any remaining critics will surely be silenced as the Panthers begin to put some ‘real deal’ talk into their premiership aspirations. Tip: Panthers by 10.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS
with the Masked Panther
MANSOUR ON SICK LIST » Powerhouse winger Josh Mansour was
off to hospital before last Sunday’s game against the Titans was even over. His fractured cheekbone, suffered after a stray knee from Anthony Don collided with his face during a challenge for the ball, will keep him out for at least the next month, and adds to Penrith’s injury woes. We checked in with the Panthers on Tuesday who confirmed Mansour still hadn’t undergone surgery and needed the swelling to go down significantly before doctors could work their magic.
Josh Mansour leaves the field last Sunday
» The Panthers have been linked to St
George-Illawarra forward Leeson Ah Mau. The Samoan international is offcontract at the end of the season and is rumoured to have attracted interest from both the Panthers and Knights, as well as his current club.
» It’s been revealed for the first time
that Bryce Cartwright has a clause in his contract with the Gold Coast Titans that allows Penrith the first opportunity to resign him should all not work out on the glitter strip.
» Halfback Jarome Luai is off-contract
with Penrith at the end of the season and it’s looking increasingly unlikely that he’ll stay at the foot of the Mountains. He’s now 21 and itching to play first grade, but NRL coach Anthony Griffin has resisted the temptation to blood the youngster despite two separate opportunities to do so in the wake of injuries to Nathan Cleary and Waqa Blake.
» Spotted: Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Trent Merrin doing some grocery shopping together last Saturday morning.
» Spotted: Nathan Cleary talking to for-
mer Panthers lower grades coach Garth Brennan in the tunnel at Panthers Stadium last Sunday. The two were having a yarn during the ISP clash between Penrith and Canterbury.
» Nathan Cleary could have another 15
years in first grade ahead of him but he’s already trying out new career options.
He spent some time in the Fox League commentary box during the second half of Penrith’s clash with the Titans last Sunday, alongside Andrew Voss and Michael Ennis. While on air, Cleary revealed his recovery from a knee injury was ahead of schedule and he’s hopeful of an early return against Newcastle in round 10.
» Plenty of Penrith supporters aren’t fans
of Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield from the Daily Telegraph, but many are too gullible and play into the supposed war between Buzz and Panthers boss Phil Gould. Last weekend, Rothfield revealed that he and Gould
text each other weekly and have a good relationship these days. Buzz declared Gus was “the voice of the game”.
» Imagine this: You’re at the urinal after
full-time on Sunday singing ‘Go The Mighty Panthers’ when a voice joins you from a nearby cubicle. After the duet, the cubicle door opens and it’s none other than club legend Royce Simmons who’s been testing out his singing voice.
» Spotted: Trent Merrin dancing up a
storm alongside Vintage FM host Wayne ‘Willmo’ Willmington last Thursday.
» Penrith forward Isaah Yeo’s family has
a proud history in rugby league and they continue to give back, especially in Dubbo where much of the family is based. Isaah’s grandfather Pat is a member of the local Men of League branch, and undertakes a number of welfare visits in the region to those in the league community who have fallen on tough times.

W
hen Reagan Campbell-Gillard was asked if he’ll give former skipper Matt Moylan a bit of a touch up when the two meet again on Sunday afternoon, the in-form Panthers prop held back from giving a juicy answer. “The team haven’t spoken about it much, we know Matt’s a dangerous player and we know what he can do, but we are just going to focus on ourselves and worry about that later in the week,” CampbellGillard told Extra Time. The big fella played a straight bat, but there’s little doubt there will be some extra feeling in Sunday’s game at Southern Cross Group Stadium. “Matt was our captain here and close friend, it will be a bit weird. It’ll just be like last weekend when we played against Carty (Bryce Cartwright),” CampbellGillard said. “There will be mixed emotions but we’ve got a job to do and that’s play some good football.” With Moylan well and truly in the spotlight this weekend, the same can also
Reagan Campbell-Gillard chatting with journalist Nathan Taylor. Photo: Melinda Jane be said for former Shark turned Panther James Maloney, who will also meet his ex-teammates for the first time this season. While Maloney is certainly having a 2018 to remember six rounds in, the same can’t
be said for Moylan, who is yet to win a game with his new club. Campbell-Gillard expects Maloney to handle his return to the Shire without any distractions. “I think he’ll handle it fine, he has the
class and experience to handle things like that. I’m pretty sure he’ll be up for it,” he said. “While the Sharks haven’t got off to a good start, we were in that same position last year. Once they get some momentum though, they’ll be hard to stop.” Unfortunately for Cronulla they’ll be missing captain Paul Gallen against the Panthers while Andrew Fifita, Luke Lewis and Wade Graham (extended bench) have been named but are all in severe doubt. Despite Penrith having the edge in the battle of the big men, Campbell-Gillard is still wary of a Cronulla side that’s walking wounded. “I’m sure whoever they bring in they’ll want to do a good job for their team,” he said. “We’ve got to focus on ourselves and keep working on the little things.” Cronulla certainly aren’t alone in the injury stakes with Penrith also hit hard in recent weeks. The latest to go down is powerhouse winger Josh Mansour, who will be sidelined for more than a month with a fractured cheekbone. CampbellGillard said he felt for his teammate. “That’s rugby league… poor bugger, he was probably in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.

GRIFFIN PROVES DOUBTERS WRONG TROY DODDS @troydodds
I
f Anthony Griffin dared look at a newspaper or browsed social media in the off-season, his next step would have been to check available jobs on Seek. For whatever reason, the fan base at Penrith has never quite warmed to Griffin, who took over the coaching reigns from Ivan Cleary ahead of the 2016 season. So when the full strength Panthers lost a trial to a reserve grade Canterbury side in February, many were calling for the firing squad to ready their guns. It was a ridiculous reaction to a meaningless game. Now, Griffin is defying the critics. He’s guided Penrith to second spot on the ladder, dropping only one game in the process. And he’s done it having to re-shuffle his side constantly, and despite losing his key playmaker in Nathan Cleary. It is a monumental effort. You don’t win comps in March or April, but you can silence the doubters.
Incredibly, Griffin is on the verge of becoming the only coach in Penrith history to make the Finals three years in a row. Not even Tim Sheens, John Lang or Phil Gould achieved that. “I think the boys are really playing for each other now,” Griffin said after Sunday’s 35-12 win over Titans. “There’s been a real tightness about the team and their enjoyment playing here.” Penrith’s success in 2018 has come despite the club releasing star juniors Matt Moylan and Bryce Cartwright to other clubs. Critics wanted straight jackets ordered for Griffin and Gould, but they knew what they were doing. ‘Hook’ is proud of the side he’s put together. For the first time since he joined the club, this is his team. And that team is emerging as the real deal in 2018. “It’s a good reward for all the work they’ve put in, but we’re only a quarter of the way through the season,” Griffin said. “It’s nice to be in this position. We don’t want to look too far ahead... we’ve just got to keep pushing forward.”

So often, rugby league is all about luck
MATT RUSSELL I
t is often said, the harder you work the luckier you get. And a lot of the time it is so true. In the NRL, I’m not so sure. Every club works hard… really hard. Players toil to exhaustion through brutal summers, coaches work seven-day weeks, support staff is always on call and so it goes. Using the first line of this column, everyone gets lucky, right? Wrong! Look at Josh Reynolds. He returns from a hamstring injury in round six to play 28 minutes, picks up a shoulder injury, and is ruled out for another month. Unlucky! What about Sam McKendry? He ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2016. He did it again to miss all of 2017. Two rounds into 2018 and it goes again. Unlucky doesn’t begin to describe it. And Josh Mansour? Missed plenty of football last year due to a knee injury and now finds himself on the sideline after a very unlucky knee to the cheek. Compare all of this to Cam Smith, who has played at least 20 club games each year for 15 consecutive seasons, not to
mention 42 Origins and 56 Internationals along the way. Does Smith work harder than Reynolds, McKendry or any of the other injured stars? Not necessarily. It’s genetics and a whole stack of luck. From a team perspective, Cronulla used only 24 players to win the 2016 Premiership. The same year, Newcastle used 35 to run last. Both worked hard. One got lucky. One didn’t. Lady luck is smiling on St GeorgeIllawarra in 2018. For a seventh game in a row to start the season, Paul McGregor has named the same 13 starters. Their 18 players used through seven rounds are the fewest since North Sydney in 1994! Work hard, get lucky, yes! Parramatta has used 24 players so far – the most through seven rounds because of form and injury. Work hard, get lucky, no. For all the money, science and toil that goes into an NRL campaign, the uncontrollable often has the biggest say. Luck. Kind to some, cruel to others, with a very loose link to hard work. Watch your team with fingers crossed this weekend.
Unlucky: Josh Mansour will be out for the next month through injury

Discussion over: Panthers got better of swap deal
JAMIE SOWARD R
ight now, with Penrith sitting in second place and Cronulla in 13th, it appears the Panthers have won the off-season trade between James Maloney and Matt Moylan. The two will go head to head for the first time this season when Cronulla take on Penrith this Sunday at Shark Park. While Moylan hasn’t had the start to the season he would have hoped for, Maloney is flying and so are the Panthers. For the 2016 Premiership winner, coming up against his former teammates on Sunday will make for a rather easy and enjoyable week. Yes, he’ll have some extra attention on him but he’ll enjoy training that little bit more because he knows he’s coming up against his old side. This isn’t just another game for the in-form Penrith half, it will mean that little bit more. But when your team is rolling like the Panthers are right now, Maloney doesn’t have to overcomplicate things – he just needs to roll into Shark Park and get the job done, just like he’s been doing the opening six rounds. On the flip side, Matt Moylan will probably be a little bit nervous come this
Sunday – much like Bryce Cartwright was taking on the Panthers last weekend. Because he’s a local Penrith junior and his team isn’t going great right now, Moylan will probably find himself under a lot more pressure than usual. He may even be more agitated too. It’s not Moylan’s fault his team isn’t playing well. The Sharks have had a few injuries and they can’t quite get their combinations right, with Moylan named at five-eighth this weekend despite playing well at fullback against the Dragons last week. If the Panthers are serious about winning the competition this year, this is the sort of game they need to win. James Maloney, along with Blake Green at the Warriors, has been one of the buys of the year so far and if he can guide the Panthers to a title this season, then it makes that off-season trade look even better for Penrith. I still think we’ll see the best of Moylan eventually but right now, his former team are at the top and his current team have been disappointing. Right now, Penrith have got the better deal.

North Queensland with head coach Paul Green re-signing until the end of the 2021 season. There had been speculation about Green’s future for some time, with plenty of reported interest from the Broncos, but the 2015 premiership-winning coach is staying in Townsville. “I am very happy to have my future sorted and even happier my future is with the Cowboys,” Green said.

be back next year and is to be played in Melbourne. In addition to the All Stars game, Melbourne has also secured the rights to host a State of Origin game in 2021 and 2025, and a number of Test matches involving the Kangaroos in 2022 and 2023. Victorian Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events John Eren said: “These blockbusters are another chance to welcome plane-loads of visitors to our state who will spend their valuable tourism dollars, support jobs and make our economy even stronger”.

» There was more embarrassment for
ARL Commission Chairman Peter Beattie this week, who declared a young kid wearing a Barcelona FC jersey was a Newcastle Knights fan. The jerseys may be similar but it was another major gaffe for Beattie, and it all unfolded on live TV.
this season, the ‘voice of rugby league’ didn’t call a single game last weekend. Despite Channel Nine broadcasting three games based in Sydney, it was left to Ray Hadley and Mat Thompson to lead the commentary. Hadley even dashed back from the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast to call last Thursday’s game between Souths and the Roosters. Is the great man on the verge of retirement?

ENTERTAINMENT
Exposing their huge talent
W LAUREN SUTTIE
arning: This article may conta i n traces of nuts… When it comes to Australia, we’ve had some pretty good things originate from our shores. From Vegemite, Kath and Kim, the Hills Hoist and even the Hemsworth brothers, Australians have a lot to be proud of. Another, maybe lesser known product
of Australia is Puppetry of the Penis, which was born out of Simon Morley’s Melbourne garage in 1997. Since then, Puppetry of the Penis has been travelling the world and exposing audiences to the art of genital origami for over 20 years. And now, after a successful run in Las Vegas, puppeteers Barry Brisco and Rich Binning are once again bringing the show to local audiences. “We always say that we don’t work hard at Puppetry of the Penis, but it is very hard to stand on stage completely nude for over an hour and keep everybody’s attention,” Barry laughed. “I mean it’s hard enough to stay
completely nude in our own bedroom with just one person and just keep their attention.” Originally joining the show in 2003 for two years, Barry made his comeback in 2015 and has been wowing audiences with his unique talent ever since. “I’m an actor and if I want to be an actor and performer, then a performer should put everything they’ve got into their performance,” he said. “I am literally showing you that I am putting everything I have into this performance.” Projected onto the big screen, audiences will get to see all the nuts and bolts involved in some of the boys’ signature
tricks such as ‘The Eiffel Tower’, ‘The Pelican’ and ‘The Hamburger’. “A penis is a funny little thing and now it’s finally getting its time on the stage,” Barry said. But it hasn’t always been fun and games. “I was doing a trick and I wasn’t quite paying attention,” he said. “I was pulling one way and turning the other way and I literally felt something break, so I went to the doctors and he said ‘yeah you kind of snapped something’.” Puppetry of the Penis will on at the Evan Theatre on Wednesday, May 2 at 8pm. This is an over 18s only event. Tickets cost $47.65. To purchase tickets, visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au .

he Ten Sopranos is an act that showcases the talents of 10 vocally gifted singers, handpicked to create possibly the most powerful all-female group in Australia. Since forming in 2006, the group has gone on to perform over 300 times across 80 theatres in Australia. The Ten Sopranos deliver a varied repertoire of both operatic favourites and popular modern songs, often tributing the likes of John Denver, Peter Allen, The Beatles, Elvis, ABBA and Broadway medleys. Staying true to operatic traditions, the group deliver the songs in their original language and key, whilst the contempo-
rary numbers are altered and performed in a way that the audience has never heard before. The group is led by multi awardwinning soprano Penny Pavlakis, a singer who is comfortable on both the classical and contemporary stage. Beginning her singing career in 1984, she has gone on to achieve a number of awards and accolades including winning the South American International Song Festival in 1990 and winning the Sydney Aria competition on a number of occasions. You can catch the Ten Sopranos at the Blue Mountains Theatre on Friday, April 20. Adult tickets are $57 and concession tickets $52, which can be purchased by calling 4723 5050 or by visiting www. bluemountainstheatre.com.

Ê In massive news for cricket fans, Foxtel and Channel Seven will be the sport’s new home from next summer. Under the huge deal, Seven will broadcast Test matches and some Big Bash League (BBL) games, while Foxtel will also broadcast BBL games and international One Day and T20 matches. Cricket had previously been broadcast on Channel Nine for 40 years. However, after Nine recently swooped on the tennis rights, it was always going to be difficult for them to screen both summer sports at once.

your horoscopes
This week is all about formulating smart strategies and finding practical solutions. Focus on business and/or work, as the planets help you tap into the extra energy, enthusiasm, discipline and motivation needed to boost your finances and/or career. You’ve got the power, so make sure you use it positively! Sunday night’s Full Moon stirs up your selfesteem zone as you take a deeper look at your core values.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Your patron planet Venus visits flirty, friendly Gemini from Wednesday until May 19. So it’s a wonderful week to mix, mingle and socialise more, both in person and online. Then Sunday night’s Full Moon urges you to get the balance right between individual projects and joint ventures. And it also fires up your flirting zone. Do you long for more love and romance in your life?
LEO
The burgeoning Sun/Saturn trine brings the opportunity for recognition and advancement at school, college or work. Through your daily words and actions, you have the power to influence other people in positive and productive ways. So don’t miss the chance to make a real difference. Watch out for domestic dramas on the weekend though, when the Full Moon shines a bright spotlight on an unfolding family fiasco.
Venus vamps into your sign so you’ll be at your gregarious Gemini best. You’re keen to have fun but, when it comes to a problematic relationship, resist the tendency to be superficial. There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface than meets the eye. Saturn and the Full Moon encourage you to slow down, observe and learn. As Harper Lee said: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view”.

As we head towards the Scorpio Full Moon, expect an intense week when unresolved issues with a loved one rise to the surface and demand to be addressed. Jealousy, possessiveness or power games could also be cause for concern. Whatever happens, try to view stressful situations from a less personal and more spiritual perspective. Your intuition is certainly switched on big time.
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Tuesday’s Mars/Jupiter connection sends a lucky opportunity your way. Just make sure you are primed and prepared to grab good fortune when it comes along! Then Sunday night’s Full Moon stimulates your spirituality zone. So it’s the perfect time to meditate, contemplate, ruminate and rejuvenate your rundown batteries from within. As actress Shirley MacLaine said: “The most profound relationship we will ever have is the one with ourselves”.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
On Tuesday, Mars and Jupiter generate a lucky opportunity involving education, children, sport or social media. So get your ideas out there as you inform and entertain others with your marvellous mind. From Thursday until Sunday, a major relationship could go through a metamorphosis, as you both air your grievances and work through a problem that’s been holding you back.

CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
The planetary patterns promise an amazing week … with one proviso. Can you keep your control-freak tendencies under control? If you can, then you’ll astound and amaze others with your can-do Capricorn attitude, your natural personal authority, and your talent for leadership. You’re ready, willing and able to work. Just make sure you are generous and inclusive.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Have you been shopping up a storm when you should have been saving or paying off debt? If the answer is ‘yes’ then you can expect a financial hiccup this week, as the Full Moon highlights money matters. It also brings up issues involving your personal values and/or self-esteem. You’ll find the less you base your core self-worth on money, status, image, physical appearance and unrealistic media expectations of what beauty is, the healthier you’ll be.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Beneath a somewhat detached and deceptively calm exterior, you’ll feel rather restless this week. Jupiter and the Full Moon imbue you with a sense of urgency and you’re keen to activate an ambitious project. But self-discipline and gradual, structured modifications are what’s needed and there’s still plenty of background work to complete. It’s also important to get the balance right between your public life and private life.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Expect some drama at Casa Scorpio this week as Mars, Pluto and the Full Moon increase your magnetism – and your tendency to brooding, obsessive behaviour. You’ve got the power to inspire others and transform your own life. So do your best to find appropriate ways to let off steam, and choose positive and challenging projects to channel your intense energy into.

Using your Super fund to help purchase your first home
money
It’s a great initiative, but there’s a few important boxes you need to tick...
Alex McKenzie Principal Financial Planner Future Financial Services futurefinancialservices.com.au
You may have noticed recently the government funded ad discussing the possibility of using your Super to purchase your first home. The aim of the policy is to make it easier for first home owners to enter the housing market. Since July 1 2017, individuals have been able to make voluntary contributions of up to $15,000 per year and $30,000 in total, to their Super account to purchase a first home. These limits apply to each individual so a couple can contribute up to $30,000 per year and $60,000 in total. Voluntary contributions under this scheme must be made within existing Super caps. Withdrawals of the contributed amounts along with the deemed earnings will be allowed from July 1 2018. The amount of earnings that can be released will be calculated using a deemed rate of return based on the 90-day Bank Bill rate plus three percentage points. Eligibility is assessed on an individual basis. This means that couples, siblings or friends can each access their own eligible First Home Super Saver Scheme contributions to purchase the same property.

If any of you have previously owned a home, it will not stop anyone else who is eligible from applying. The withdrawals of concessional contributions and associated earnings will be taxed at the individual’s marginal tax rate, less a 30 per cent tax offset. When non-concessional amounts are withdrawn, they will not be taxed, but we anticipate that the earnings will be taxed at the individual’s marginal tax rate, less a 30 per cent tax offset. The First Home Super Saver Scheme will be administered by the Australian Tax Office (ATO), which will determine the amount of contributions that can be released and will instruct Super funds to make these withdrawal payments. The ATO will also be responsible for compli-
ance to ensure that people purchase their first home after they withdraw from Super for their deposit. The essence of the scheme is that we are able to get concessions for saving for our first home. No doubt, this is a good thing but, there are limitations and considerations. The investment strategy for these savings should be different to the strategy for the rest of the funds in Superannuation. I fear many may get this wrong. The funds for the home will have a short time frame and should be invested far more conservatively than funds with the purpose to provide income in retirement. Funds for Super can risk short-term loss for long-term gain. This is not the case with a house deposit.

We all have a different approach to learning, but our attitude and selfbelief is critical... Everyone is an individual, and we all have different ways of learning. Pedagogical experts have categorised learners into four different categories known as Dunn’s classification of learning styles: • Visual – these students learn best from reading and seeing • Auditory – learn best from hearing. Maybe a tape recorder could be used • Kinesthetic – need movement (could be clapping etc) to facilitate learning • Tactile – this form of learning is most suitable for younger students who respond best to concrete material. A small band of students will continue to need this type of learning to develop their abstract skills Although teachers and educators are aware of these different learning styles it is very difficult to successfully incorporate all four styles into a class of 20-30 students. Consequently, failure to cover the different styles of learning may contribute to some students ‘falling through the cracks’ at school. Educators now realise that the real key
to learning is multi faceted and learning style is not a critical element to the process. Attitude, expectation and self-belief are far more relevant to the ultimate success of students. While every student is different in some aspects, they are similar in more significant ways. Children start life with a thirst to learn, a craving for success, the ability to adapt, a desire to assimilate information; and most importantly, have unlimited powers to achieve. This is part of the human DNA that has fuelled the development of modern society. The five attributes that are listed above is a legacy for all students but unfortunately it is one that fewer and fewer students inherit. The great challenge today is not what children learn at school, but that children learn how to learn so that they may survive in an ever-changing environment.
Why urinary obstructions in cats is such a serious issue

It’s an issue we see often, but many cat owners don’t understand how serious it can be...
Nicole McMillan Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
your Rev John Lavender
Urinary obstructions in cats is unfortunately something that we see often as vets. Male cats can develop an obstruction of the urethra which is the small tube that drains urine out of the bladder. It is rare in females as they have a comparatively much wider urethra and can generally pass urine easier than males. A urinary obstruction can occur in cats that have inflammatory changes in their bladder. The umbrella term for cats with urinary issues is FLUTD – Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. It is can be due to many factors including diet, stress and genetics. The most serious form is a urinary obstruction. What are the symptoms? Generally the first sign of a urinary obstruction is straining to urinate. Often, this can look like constipation so it is important to seek immediate veterinary attention if your cat is going to the litter tray more often, straining, hunched or painful. A blocked bladder can be very painful and some cats will vocalise loudly and stop eating. In the more advanced stages of the disease, a urinary obstruction can also cause vomiting, lethargy
and life threatening renal failure. This is due to the toxins normally excreted in urine being absorbed back into the blood stream. What causes a blocked bladder? There are several causes of urinary obstruction and sometimes these can be difficult to predict. Most commonly obstructions occur due to an accumulation of minerals in the bladder that form little stones or plugs. Cystitis, inflammation in the bladder occurs first. Inflammatory cells, blood and crystals form. Cystitis in cats can be sterile or caused by infection, due to bladder stones.

Don’t be afraid, just believe: Why we should have faith and trust even at the lowest points in our lives... We know what it is like to be travelling down life’s road when suddenly from nowhere, comes something unexpected. Sometimes the unexpected can be good, quite often it is not. Disappointment. Unemployment. Sickness. Relationship breakdown. Family issues. Financial difficulty. Depression. Even death itself. When life seems to spin out of control, it can be hard not to spin off with it! How can we stay focussed? In the Bible we meet a man named Jairus who comes to Jesus because his little daughter is close to death. What was it about Jesus that caused Jairus to come to him? There were doctors; why not go to them? Jairus was a ruler in the local synagogue; why not rely on what it could provide? It is clear that in Jesus, Jairus sees someone more significant, powerful and able. Sadly, before Jesus gets to the girl, a
How is it treated? Cats that have a urinary obstruction require emergency treatment. An anaesthetic is generally required so that a catheter can be passed into the urinary tract to relieve the obstruction. The bladder is thoroughly flushed and drained. Typically, a urinary catheter is left in place for a few days while having the cat on a drip to dilute the urine and flush the kidneys and bladder. Blood tests are also generally performed to make sure there has been no damage to the kidneys. In extreme circumstances, bladder surgery may be required.
message comes to Jairus saying she has died. Imagine his grief! Yet hear Jesus’ words to Jairus: “Don’t be afraid; just believe”. These are radical, life changing words! When life has reached its lowest point, Jesus challenges Jairus, and us, to not be afraid but to believe and trust in him, confident that Jesus is always working for our good. When Jesus arrives at Jairus’ house, those present witness an unforgettable event. Jesus went into the dead girl’s room and miraculously brought her back to life. Not only is this magnificent but raising this girl from death shows that Jesus is the real giver of life. Jesus is in control, even control over death itself. When everything seems out of control, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Have confidence in him, remembering his words to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

An exciting way to visit a unique part of Italy
travel
OA C I F L A
ST
When it came to visiting the Amalfi Coast, we put ourselves in the hands of one of the most respected tour operators around...
Roderick Eime Content thanks to WTF Media
The last time I toured Italy extensively, I was sleeping on trains, rummaging through my backpack for loose lire and generally travelling rough. OK, at 17 you don’t know any better and it’s all just one great adventure. Now, 35 years and several full passports later, I’m ready to surrender to the wisdom and experience of one of the world’s great tour companies. Tauck, a US-based family-owned brand, have honed their product to a razor sharp edge over 90 years of continuous operation and I’m joining them for their muchpraised ‘Week in Rome, the Amalfi Coast and Capri’ tour. Our entire group of 22 fits easily onto a single coach, so there is no crushing or squeezing and our tour guide, Roberta, is as authoritative as she is charming, seamlessly taking charge of our cavalcade as we rollick through this most picturesque region of Italy.
Like wide-eyed school kids on excursion, we stood at the wharf at Naples waiting for the Capri ferry. This legendary island sits like a bejewelled apostrophe at the head of the Amalfi Coast, further to the east on the Italian mainland. Our hour-long ferry ride deposits us and several hundred daytrippers at the Marina Grande on the northern shore and in the shadow of the towering cliffs of Monte Cappello and Monte San Michele, the larger of the two soaring to more than 500 metres. Capri (pronounced CAR-pree) has enjoyed resort destination status since Roman times, when Emperors Augustus and Tiberius erected their own holiday villas and gardens well before timeshare was ever a concept. Even in June, shoulder season, the tourism machine is in full swing. Convertible taxis, the signature transport of Capri, are loading furiously at the wharf. Roberta ushers us into prearranged vehicles and we head up the steep, narrow laneways to the Piazzetta where the big brand names occupy niches and slots in the miniature shopping district, cheek by jowl with pizzerias and gelato stalls. It’s no stretch of the imagination to
picture Sophia Loren or Gina Lollobrigida swanning about the designer boutiques as men swoon and collapse at their feet. There are no bargain shops here and neither is our hotel, the Grand Hotel Quisisana, where the bellboy challenges me to produce a room key, lest I be some lowly blow-in from the streets outside. A simple beer will set you back eight euro. Fortunately great pleasure can be achieved by simply walking the cobblestoned footpaths, taking the chairlift to the summit for a magnificent view or visiting any of the historic sites. The Amalfi Coast looks for all the world like one big movie set. The serpentine roads twist and curl around the precipitous hills, each corner revealing a new and breathtaking view. In a fitting farewell, we head back to Naples via the sea, watching the traffic squirm on the ledge-like roads that join the settlements perched on the impossible cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. In the distance, is that a whiff of smoke from the ominous peak of Mount Vesuvius? Let us not forget just who is in charge around here. The perfect tips to update your activewear wardrobe Activewear is a fashion genre of its own these days, and there’s some great items to keep you looking good this season... It doesn’t matter if you are a stay at home mum with 500 things to do today or if you’re just happy to be out of the office and it’s finally the weekend, a go-to outfit should always involve a little activewear. There’s nothing comfier than those yoga pants and you know it! How to pull off sports luxe without a gym membership you ask? I have got you covered with the latest sporty trends...

The latest sneaker If you have been wearing the same old pair of shoes for a while now, fresh new kicks can make a big impact. The latest sporty shoe to be coveted are the Nike Vapourmax with a super unique gel sole and airy lightweight flexible upper. With new futuristic looking colourways like lava red, ultramarine and hydrogen blue, with these Nike’s there is a pair for you. The belt bag I will be honest, this trend caught me off guard, when I used to think belt bags I
pictured dads in the 1980s at Disneyland or somewhere else touristy and retro, but oh how my mind has been changed! When Gucci jumps on a trend you know it’s a good one. Not only versatile with a variety of different sporty looks, the belt bag worn around the waist or worn across the body is perfect for running errands and being seriously stylish at the same time. Wear a black racer back tank dress and a white pair of sneakers, clip around your waist a monogrammed black belt bag and you are set!

Puffer jacket The puffer jacket can seem a bit overwhelming if too much excess fabric isn’t your friend. If you are worried about looking too bulking, pair your puffer with a tight legging in a matching colour. Head-to-toe burgundy and maroon are big for AW18, monochromatic styling streamlines your entire outfit and pulls everything together for effortless cool. Cropped sweater jumper For the ultimate in off duty active wear, pick up a cozy jumper. The baggier and more oversized the better. Pair it with a black leather skirt and roll and tuck to add shape or leave untucked and style with over the knee boots for a chic touch to sports luxe.

Developing a plan to tackle diabetes and its complications Diabetes is something we hear about often, but how much do we really know about it? And how do you best handle a diagnosis?
Stefan Scheuermair Physiotherapist OnePointHealth 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition which occurs when the body loses its ability to regulate how much sugar is in the bloodstream. It loses this ability when the body becomes insensitive to insulin. Insulin is a chemical the body produces to control how much sugar is in the bloodstream. It is important to be able to control how much sugar is in the bloodstream as it impacts on your energy levels and overall health. If your blood sugar levels are too high for too long, it corrodes and damages your arteries and nerves. This can feel like numbness in the feet and fingers. It is important to prevent the progression of diabetes as it impairs your body’s ability to heal itself which can cause serious issues later in life. Diabetes affects one in 10 people worldwide, the good news is, if you seek treatment diabetes can be controlled. One thing needs to happen: increase your body’s sensitivity to insulin to control your blood sugar! To do this you need to:
• Remove sugary based foods which spike your blood sugar • Effectively medicated • Physiotherapy/Exercise Physiology exercise program If you suffer from diabetes or know
someone with it and would like to develop a plan to tackle it head on, please book in with a Physiotherapist/Exercise Physiologist. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you in next week’s paper.

SMALL BUSINESS CHAMPION AWARDS
honoured at glittering event small business people make to our community. “Since we launched the program in 1999, the Australian Small Business Champion Awards have grown to become the largest and most prestigious recognition of our small business community in the country.” Mr Loe said the awards had become known as the ‘Oscars’ of Australia’s small business sector. “It’s the only national program of its kind to recognise achievements and honour great performances in small business,” he said. About 30 judges evaluate the entries and look at all aspects of a winning business including: strategies, customer service, vision, support of the local community and growth. There are also two categories for individual business people: Small Business Champion Entrepreneur and Young Small Business Champion Entrepreneur. Award winners will be announced at the presentation dinner to be held this Saturday, April 21 at The Star, Sydney. “We congratulate these businesses and commend them on representing their local area in this national awards program,” Mr Loe said. “We also thank the Awards sponsors NOVA Employment, Castaway, Black
Star Pastry and Taurus Marketing, whose support for the program enable us to continue to celebrate the achievements of our country’s small business people.” These businesses will represent the local community at the upcoming evening this weekend. Their hard work, innovation and support of their community will be recognised and celebrated during a glittering ceremony at The Star. For further information about the Australian Small Business Champion Awards, visit www.businesschampions. com.au.
Good Luck! Congratulations to the Penrith finalists on their achievements.

MAZDA
Fresh look for BT-50 to be launched
xclusive to Australia, Mazda will launch a bold new look for the BT-50, going on sale from next month In its second and most comprehensive update since its launch in 2011, the BT-50 will see significant front end design changes, doing away with curving lines to strengthen the ute’s impressive road stance. Lowering the car’s visual centre of gravity, the outer edges of the bumper have been squared off, bolder contrasting fog light surrounds have been added, along with a large trapezoidal lower air intake with a skid plate. Further bolstering its tougher outlook, the grille has adopted strong horizontal lines to straighten out the front of the car, giving the ute a wider and more solid bearing. Designed and engineered locally, the new look Mazda BT-50 has been made specifically for Australia and is exclusive to the Australian market. Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, said the refresh is an important step in a competitive segment. “The utility segment is a huge priority in Australia and for Mazda; we’re always looking to improve and enhance our product offering, to remain competitive and appealing to our customers,” he said. More detail on specific upgrades and pricing will be available closer to release.

Finally a feature win! NATHAN TAYLOR
n arguably one of the biggest races on the calendar, Penrith youngster Reid Mackay has claimed the first win of his blossoming speedcar career. The 21-year-old took out the 67th running of the prestigious Australian Grand Prix (AGP) at Gunnedah Speedway recently despite some mid-race drama that saw Mackay fall behind before regaining the lead in the dying stages.

and it’s great to finally get the featurerace monkey off my back. “I just played the patience game. I knew my car was good on the bottom and when Matt [Jackson] passed me with a few laps to go, it was a bit of a wake-up call for me and I knew that I had to refocus. “You just don’t turn up to the Australian Grand Prix and win, you have to work for it and that’s exactly what we did.” Interestingly Mackay – a fourth generation racer – is the nephew of former
As the race began to enter the final few laps, Matt Jackson, who had started from position six, made a pass for the lead, relegating Mackay to second. On the following lap, Mackay returned serve and reclaimed the lead. The final seven laps saw the pair battling it out before Mackay held on for victory. Speaking after the race, Mackay said he was thrilled to notch up his maiden speedcar feature-race win. “Winning the AGP was the best feeling ever,” he said. “We have been pretty consistent of late

After five years in the fast and furious sport, Mackay is continuing to rise up the ranks and has already recorded numerous podium finishes this season. Looking ahead for the remainder of the year, Mackay will continue to race in Queensland and focus on smaller tracks, which suit his engine better. He’s also looking at putting together a deal for a new engine for season 2018/19 but plans are yet to be finalised.

AUSSIE RULES
Pathway created for teens Girls have new team: Five clubs come together to form Under 18s Aussie Rules side NATHAN TAYLOR
eenage girls aged 15 and above no longer have to leave the local area to continue playing Aussie Rules following the recent introduction of a Junior Ramettes U18s side. Before this season, the Penrith area didn’t have a team for girls who were too old for the U15s division and too young for the Open women’s division. In order to keep the girls involved with the sport, a number of key people including coach Kim Butler, AFL Area Manager David Hook and Regional Junior Convenor Sean Hogan decided to create a joint venture U18s side involving players from five junior AFL clubs – Blue Mountains, Emu Plains/Glenmore Park, Hawkesbury, St Clair and Penrith. Under the Junior Ramettes name, the side is currently enjoying their first season in the Western Sydney U18s Youth Girls competition. Butler said she had been trying for years to get the side up and running. “I tried to form this a couple of years ago without any luck, but this year I got onto

The Junior Ramettes following their Round 1 thrashing of Wollondilly recently the AFL and told them we need to do this – we need to keep these players involved with the sport and help develop them,” she told the Weekender. “We had to create a joint venture because we didn’t have enough girls to
form a team, so we’ve got five clubs from the local area involved.” In the past, teenagers who were ‘aged out’ had to travel elsewhere in Sydney to play or even give up on playing AFL altogether or at least until they were old
enough to play in the Opens competition. Currently close to 20 girls have signed up to the Junior Ramettes, with more players desperately needed for the remainder of the season. To get involved, call Rams Chairman Greg Corless on 0412 579 061.

Honouring Tyran’s talent and his proud heritage NATHAN TAYLOR
alented local cricketer Tyran Liddiard thought he was just filming a documentary on Indigenous cricketers in Australia when he received a phone call that brought he and his family to tears. Recently, Cricket Australia sent a cameraman and journalist to Liddiard’s Werrington home to interview him about Indigenous cricketers. During the shoot, Liddiard and his family were sitting around the dinner table when the reporter took a phone call midway though filming. “We thought him taking a phone call during dinner was a bit rude at first but then he said the call was actually for me, Liddiard told the Weekender. “So I answered the phone and the person on the other end of the line told me I’d been selected in the men’s Aboriginal XI squad to tour England this June. “The cameras were rolling when I was told the news and everyone was a ‘mess’. My family was so happy for me and very emotional. Labelling it the “biggest achievement
T
of his cricket career so far, the 20-year-old will fly all the way to the other side of the world in June for a commemorative tour of England that will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the 1868 Aboriginal team that toured the UK. The tour will feature a total of nine matches against Surrey, Sussex, Derbyshire, Notinghamshire and the Marylebone Cricket Club, and will be played at some of the grounds that hosted the original team of Aboriginal pioneers 150 years ago. The 1868 side became the first Australian team in any sport to tour internationally when they played 47 matches across England during a six-month period. In a special tribute to those pioneers, each member of the 2018 men’s team have been linked to a 1868 player and will sport the name of that player on the back of their uniform. “To represent my country is something I’ve wanted to do since I started playing cricket, and to be able to do it playing for my culture and family is something I’m very proud of, Liddiard said. “To be able to make this historic team and travel to England will be unbelievable. It almost takes my breath away thinking about it.

Win from Heaven Blake Fitzpatrick drives Match In Heaven to victory NATHAN TAYLOR
aul Fitzpatrick-trained horse Match in Heaven made history last week, taking out the 50th Renshaw Cup at the Penrith Paceway. The time-honoured event was established in 1969 to honour long-standing President, Dr Maurice Renshaw, who was instrumental in obtaining a licence for harness racing in Penrith back in the mid-1960s. Last Thursday’s $50,000 Renshaw Cup, which was run over the testing distance of 2525m, attracted a very strong field of horses with the fast-finishing Match in Heaven, owned by John Star, winning the race with Blake Fitzpatrick in the driver’s seat. Match In Heaven edged out Ultimate Art and Courts In Session to win the race, with pre-race favourite Bevans Cullen finishing fifth. Match In Heaven was a $7.30 chance on the TAB. To celebrate the event’s 50th year, a huge crowd was on hand with Dr Renshaw’s family in attendance for the presentation.

Match In Heaven wins the Renshaw Cup at the Penrith Paceway last week Penrith Paceway CEO Lorraine Pozza said it was another fantastic night at the Paceway. “It was a very historic night with lots of families out and about enjoying the racing and our promotions,” she said.
Pozza said she’s looking forward to seeing an even bigger crowd in 2019. “We are looking forward to next year’s Renshaw Cup, with our long-time sponsor Schweppes once again on board,” she said

BASKETBALL: Penrith’s Men’s and Women’s teams have endured another tough weekend during Round 5 of the Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition. For the second straight week Penrith’s men were thumped, this time at the hands of the Sutherland Sharks 101-81. Penrith captain Ben Kearins led his team once again with 21 points. Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s team also went down to the Sharks 86-66. Dominika Offner was best for the Panthers scoring a team-high 16 points. Both sides will battle the Norths Bears in Round 6.

In the SG Ball competition, Penrith were defeated by Newcastle 18-6, while in the Harold Matthews competition, the Panthers narrowly lost to the Knights 16-14. The news was positive for Penrith’s Tarsha Gale Cup side who smashed the Sydney Roosters 52-14.
AFL: The GWS Giants are back in business, thrashing the Fremantle Dockers 82-51 in Round 4 of the AFL. The 31-point victory over the struggling Dockers was the Giants’ eighth straight win in the nation’s capital. GWS will travel to Melbourne this Saturday to battle St Kilda.
RUGBY UNION: The Penrith Emus were on the other end of one of the biggest thrashings in recent memory last weekend, pulverised by Sydney University 97-0 in Round 2 of the Shute Shield competition. The Emus will battle Gordon this Saturday afternoon at Chatswood Oval.
AFL: The Penrith Rams have opened their 2018 AFL Sydney Platinum Division campaign with a win, defeating the Holroyd Parramatta Goannas 70-17. Luke Cooke top scored for the Rams with three goals. The 39-year-old former UFC Middleweight Champion and part-time actor will assist Penrith Mayor John Thain in cutting the ceremonial ribbon this Saturday, April 21. The English fighter will also mingle with fans as well as run an exclusive Brazilian jiujitsu seminar for one hour to a limited number of people. “Michael is a former Middleweight Champion and mixed martial arts legend. To have just 30 people exclusively ‘roll around’ in front of Michael will be great,” UFC Gym Penrith General Manager, Justin Joudo said. “Michael has his own UFC clubs in Los Angeles and he was the right man to get out here and help with our grand opening.” The free event, which will take place at Shop 20, 92-112 Henry Street, will also feature community stalls, raffles, classes, games and plenty of food and drink.
