ith her policies and beliefs almost opposite to those of the re-elected State Government, State Member Elect for Londonderry, Prue Car has barely had the chance to catch her breath before her biggest challenge yet – being a Labor MP against a Liberal Government. Ms Car is the first Londonderry candidate since 1991 to be elected in State Parliament without being in the party that forms government. “I know that it’s not going to be an easy job, it will be difficult, but I’m prepared to do everything I can to ensure that this Government is not only held accountable but that it delivers what the people in Londonderry voted for,” she said. “We need to make sure that the government honours the commitments that I made during the election campaign, because I have been elected on those commitments.” Ms Car secured 58 per cent of votes after preferences, earning an impressive 13.9 per cent swing to the ALP. She believes this gives her a mandate to deliver. Since being pre-selected 499 days before Saturday’s election, Ms Car door knocked tens of thousands of people, and made several large promises based on their concerns. “We need to make sure that there’s a school in Jordan Springs, we need to make sure that there’s air conditioning at Bennett Road Public School and that Nepean Hospital gets its upgrade and more nurses,” she said.
