enrith Anglican College (PAC) is set to bow to public pressure and relocate 15 large male kangaroos instead of killing them and burying them at the school.

As revealed exclusively by the Weekender last week, National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) gave the Orchard Hills-based school a permit to cull the kangaroos and bury them on their property.

But after a community backlash, the school is now looking at other options.

Animal Liberation NSW and the Animal Justice Party launched a petition against the shooting of the kangaroos and received 2,500 signatures in less than two days.

Headmaster, Mark Lewis, received a phone call from an Animal Liberation NSW representative on Tuesday night offering to try to find a property owner willing to take on the live kangaroos. “This, in turn, would allow the College to apply for a release permit from NPWS,� he said.

enrith Council could be shaken up with an injection of younger views, if Labor and Liberal get their youngest candidates over the line.

Labor’s 25-year-old Aaron Duke is already a long-time Labor supporter and has been working on recent State and Federal campaigns.

If Penrith Councillor and candidate John Thain gets enough votes in North Ward, he could also secure a spot for Mr Duke, who is second on Cr Thain’s ticket.

“Our city is experiencing major demographic changes. I want to bring new energy and ideas to Penrith Council and ensure that the younger generations of our community have their say,” Mr Duke said.

The Liberal Party are testing one of their Young Liberals placing an even younger 23-year-old Josh Hoole second on Councillor Mark Davies’ ticket.

Also for the Liberals, Glen Gardiner and Belinda Hill are on Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler’s ticket in North Ward.

Labor is also hoping to get former candidate for Mugloa Todd Carney in on Greg Davies’ ticket in East Ward, and Kath Presdee on Mayor Karen McKeown’s ticket in South Ward.

Animal Liberation NSW Director, Hazel Stephens, said it’s great the school is willing to reconsider if a property is found.

“If the way to stop them dying is to relocate them, then find a long term solution, then that’s what we need to do. It’s not the perfect solution but it’s fantastic they are talking to us,” she said.

Ms Stephens said she understood the school was taking the preferred direction of NPWS. A spokesperson for NPWS said the only alternative to shooting in this circumstance was capture and relocation, which after assessment (and without a nominated property for relocation), was not a reasonable or viable option.

“In assessing the land manager’s application, NPWS considers if non-lethal methods are available to mitigate the problem and the likely impact issuing a licence would have on the sustainability of the local population,” he said.

“In the present case, NPWS is satisfied that the kangaroos present a significant risk to the children at the school. Shooting is generally the preferred humane option for removing individual animals that pose a threat to human safety.”

rmed with my top secret login, an NBN connection and a family size bag of Maltesers, I sat down to complete the 2016 Census at precisely 8.23pm on Tuesday night.

As much as the rather bizarrely scheduled re-run of ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ over on the GO! channel was appealing, I put my civic duty first and headed for the computer.

Attempt number one – a dismal failure and that cranky little error message nobody wants to see.

Surely this was just a temporary setback, after all the Australian Bureau of Statistics had guaranteed the site wouldn’t crash.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics, of all places, didn’t get this wrong, did they?

Attempts number two, three and four were met with a similar failed result.

Truth is, what did they think was going to happen?

It was obvious to even the most novice Internet user that the infrastructure simply wasn’t going to cope with millions of people trying to connect at the same time.

Much of that discussion was drowned out by those in tin foil hats who, despite most government departments already knowing their business, thought the whole thing was just one giant conspiracy.

By the time my family size bag of Maltesers was half done (that’s not a paid commercial by the way, though I’d be more than happy to accept any free offerings), my attitude towards the Census had changed considerably. The excitement was well and truly gone.

As it stands, I still haven’t managed to get time to complete the Census and I’m struggling to feel motivated to do it.

Important as it may be, it’s ridiculous that something as crucial as a national Census is reduced to an embarrassing laughing stock because the bloody website didn’t work.

The same website organisers said would easily cope with the huge influx of traffic in a short space of time.

Yes, you have several weeks to complete the questionnaire before any trouble starts coming your way.

Yes, you actually could have completed it earlier.

But that’s not really the point, is it?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics asked us specifically to complete the Census on Tuesday, August 9 and then failed to deliver the technology and infrastructure capable of making that happen.

A big deal? In the big scheme of things, not really.

The world has gone stark raving mad if we’re worried about calling female athletes at the Olympics ‘girls’.

Janice Crosswhite, the vice president of the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women, says the female athletes at the Games should be referred to as women.

Janice should get a real job.

Ironic, really, that the word ‘girls’ is used in her organisation’s title.

The suggestion that the term ‘girls’ is offensive is just plain ridiculous.

But it does go to show that if you have shares in a led pencil company, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

We won’t be heading towards an online voting platform at elections any time soon.

At least talkback radio wasn’t short on topics on Wednesday morning either.

But the greatest lesson is this piece of irony – how did the people responsible for the Census not accurately predict the number of people that would be online at peak times?

The Bureau was blaming hackers on Wednesday morning, which only raises more serious questions about the privacy surrounding the Census data given the site was quite clearly vulnerable.

Tweet of the night? There were many, but this doozy from Malcolm Turnbull hardly won him any fans: “We filled in the @ABSCensus tonight online – v easy to do. And so important for planning better Govt services & investment for the future.”

At least the connection over in Point Piper was up to scratch.

Penrith Women’s Health Centre welcomes new $100,000 commitment DALE DRINKWATER

ulnerable women in Penrith will again have access to a domestic violence case worker, now funding has been promised for a further year.

For four years, the case worker at Penrith Women’s Health Centre (PWHC) supported women who were undecided whether or not to leave violent partners, but the service lost NSW Government funding from June 30.

Last week, PWHC Manager Jane Gold received the news that $100,000 was heading the centre’s way to bring back the case worker.

“It doesn’t sound like a lot, but it will help those women in the contemplation phase... we are trying to reach them before it gets too bad,” Ms Gold said.

The case worker closed the gap for women before they entered the Staying Home Leaving Violence program, that helped them remain safely in their home after they had decided to leave an abusive partner.

Over 100 women were seen by the case worker in less than a year, but for over a month women have been without a service while the State Government decided what to do.

“This support for PWHC will see their workforce, which is now approaching 30, continue to assist women in our local community who are victims of domestic violence and provide them with the

necessary skills and strategies to enhance their lives,” he said.

Penrith has the second highest number of recorded domestic violence related assault incidents in NSW, with 1035 incidents between April 2015 to March 2016.

Member for Londonderry Prue Car met with State and Federal Labor MPs at the centre last month to advocate for the funding to be restored.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us. It’s quite a new Senate and quite a different Senate,” she told the Weekender.

Senator Payne said she is incredibly proud after receiving 39,108 first preference votes, the most of any Liberal National Senate candidate in NSW. No consultation on new airport

Local environmental issues critical to party’s Council election campaign

enrith Council won’t commit to consulting the community in deciding their position on the new western Sydney airport.

Community members were present at Monday night’s Council meeting, and were furious with the decision, voted for by eight Councillors.

Council’s acceptance of the airport is based on preconditions, such as including the airport in the Sydney Airport Curfew Act, and having a “seat at the table” during discussions.

At the meeting, independent Councillor Maurice Girotto asked for Council to recognise residents as key stakeholders in the proposed airport, and be informed on all aspects, culminating with a community survey on what direction to go in.

Eight present Councillors voted against his request, including Labor Councillors Karen McKeown, Greg Davies and John Thain and Liberal Councillors Ross Fowler, Tricia Hitchen, Ben Goldfinch, Bernard Bratusa and Mark Davies.

“The ‘Laboral’ brethren are at it again.

Why don’t you want to share information with the people who vote?” Cr Girotto asked.

“If there’s not a problem, what are we afraid of? If there’s no issue, if whatever is proposed is so good why aren’t we standing on the rooftop telling everyone?”

Those unhappy with the stance of Penrith Council were community speakers Andrew Grieve, Peter Moriarty and Peter Dollin.

Their concerns were over the health of residents, the increase in traffic, pollution and like Cr Girotto’s concerns, consultation.

“Residents have not had any input in the decision making,” Mr Moriarty said.

ith only six per cent of the original native woodlands left, it’s clear why the Cumberland Plains Woodlands is described as ‘critically endangered’.

The rapid increase in housing developments in the Penrith region has prompted Greens Penrith Councillor and North Ward candidate, Michelle Tormey, and the NSW Greens to turn their focus to local planning laws.

Through a five-point plan, the Greens oppose the repeal of the Native Vegetation Act 2003, aim to strengthen local planning laws to protect and conserve biodiversity, and focus on developing new nature reserves and green corridors.

For Cr Tormey, it’s becoming more important than ever to protect what little remains.

“The community of Penrith value our natural assets and the proposed changes will put at risk the little we have left,” she said.

“Greens on Penrith Council have voted against the further development of the former ADI Site and called for the proposed Wianamatta Regional Park to be gazetted as a Nature Reserve.”

In turn, this may protect the Cumberland Plains Woodland that is home to native birds, bats and mammals, and the proposed Wianamatta Regional Park that has the last wild emu population in the Sydney basin.

Dr Mehreen Faruqi, Greens MLC, said it’s essential to have local government councillors standing up for local environment.

“Here in western Sydney and the Blue Mountains we need representatives that will protect this unique environment,” she said.

“Local Government is at the frontline of protecting the environment. Greens councillors will always side with the community and the environment, not over development.”

Before the July election, the Turnbull Government committed a further $11 million to continue to try and maintain the Cumberland Conservation Corridors, which connect the scattered parcels of woodland across the region.

In February, the Federal Government also secured 38 hectares of land to preserve as a conservation corridor between Cumberland Plains Woodland and Mulgoa Creek.

In the coming months, the Baird Government will release biodiversity reforms.

The Greens are hoping community support for these issues will see them secure a positive result at next month’s Council elections.

Brendan Milillo has been forced to fork out $2,805 after an attempt to collect his belongings turned ugly.

Mr Milillo fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with common assault and two counts of damage property.

The court heard the 22-year-old had organised to collect a number of items from his mother’s house, but had arrived late sparking a heated argument that resulted in the defendant damaging a screen and shed door.

Magistrate Georgia Knight said she understood there were tensions and he had received “mixed signals” from his step father and mother.

He was convicted for the damage matters, fined $400 and ordered to enter into a 10-month good behaviour bond for the common assault.

Man keeps licence Robert James Walsh has managed to keep his licence despite pleading guilty to drink driving.

The businessman fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with lowrange drink driving.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell acknowledged that 22 years had passed since the defendant had come under notice and no other PCA matters featured on his record.

“Mr Walsh, you just had a warning shot across the bow – it better be the last time,” he cautioned.

He was handed a conditional discharge pursuant to him entering into a ninemonth good behaviour bond.

olice are investigating after a lengthy stand-off where two young male prisoners managed to climb onto the roof of Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre at St Marys on Monday, and remained there for more than nine hours.

In what was described by a spokesperson as an “impulsive act”, the inmates broke out at about 10am on Monday, August 8, and came down voluntarily at around 7.30pm that night.

In footage posted by the Seven Network on Twitter, the duo were seen to be throwing debris from the roof of one of the detention units, and appeared to be kicking off air vents, and breaking off pipes and parts of a metal air conditioner.

The young males were taken back into custody when they came down.

A spokesperson for the centre confirmed the incident did occur and investigations will now be carried out.

“Juvenile Justice can confirm that there was an incident at Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre in St Marys on Monday, August 8,” the spokesperson said.

“Two detainees climbed onto the roof of an internal unit and voluntarily came down from the roof at 7.30pm that night following negotiations with Juvenile

Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre is the principle remand centre in NSW for males aged 15 years and over.

The centre accommodates up to 105 young people primarily from the Sydney metropolitan area and offers a range of

services, programs and interventions to address individual needs and reduce offending.

It also has the capacity to hold 31 young males in a separate unit who pose increased safety risks to themselves and others and require additional security measures.

Keeping Sydney moving Work is underway on WestConnex, which involves widening and extending the M4 and duplicating the M5 East and joining them to create a freeflowing motorway. WestConnex is a vital part of the transport solution for Tomorrow’s Sydney and will alleviate congestion and help to improve your journey.

WestConnex is widening the M4 Motorway between Parramatta and Homebush from three to four lanes in each direction and extending the M4 with underground tunnels from Homebush to Haberfield.

Once finished, motorists will be able to travel between Glenbrook and Haberfield without stopping at a single traffic light.

Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler on Monday, and said protecting and improving open greenspace areas was a priority of the NSW Government.

“Access to public open space is vital to making a place where people can live happy, fulfilling lives,” he said.

“We want to make sure that, as our towns and suburbs get bigger, they get better as well.”

The path will be delivered under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program Grant.

Upcoming work: plan your journey To make this happen, we will be working 24 hours per day, seven days per week. In the coming weeks we will need to close the M4 Motorway a number of times at night, to safely complete construction work.

Tunnelling activities have commenced and from August, trucks will be removing excavated material from our construction sites at Cintra Park, Concord and Underwood Road, Homebush.

Census failure Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has moved to assure local residents that their Census data is safe, despite the major online failure that left millions unable to submit their information.

“I want to assure Australians that the unequivocal advice we have received from IBM, from the Bureau of Statistics, from the Australian Signal Directorate, is that their Australian Census data is safe, it has not been compromised.

The site has not been hacked, it has not been interfered with – their data is safe,” Mr Turnbull said.

The Census website crashed on Tuesday night and when the Weekender went to print on Wednesday, had still not been restored.

Mr Turnbull said a full investigation will take place.

The wider pathway that will be constructed in conjunction with landscaping works along Tench Reserve will stretch 400 metres, and is likely to be along the current pathway.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres welcomed $115,000 in funding for the pathway, that will improve public access to the Nepean River, and build rain gardens to improve water quality in the river.

“Our local community has a great love and long-running connection with the Nepean River, and I’m delighted the NSW Government is helping to fund this project,” he said.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has presented new New South Wales State flags to Neel Chand from Penrith RSL Club and Brett McFadden, Superintendent Commander of Penrith Police.

“It was an honour and privilege to present these new flags which represent all people of our community,” Mr Ayres said.

The current State flag of New South Wales was officially adopted by the government of New South Wales in 1876. The flag consists of two elements, the Union Jack and the Stage Badge featuring the central red cross which is the cross of St George and the four stars representing the Southern Cross while the lion is the English Lion derived from the British Arms.

Mr Ayres said it’s great to see the flags flying proudly in the local area.

“The State flag is proudly displayed in the courtyard of Penrith Police Station and the Penrith RSL Club performs a daily ritual to raise and lower the flag in remembrance to servicemen and women of Australia,” Mr Ayres said.

Investigation work will be carried out on the M4 Motorway between Roper Road at Colyton and Russell Street at Emu Plains from next week.

The work is to help inform the detailed design for the M4 Smart Motorway project and will involve minor vegetation clearing, digging trenches and drilling holes to determine the nature of the ground and bedrock material.

The work will also include utility investigations and land surveys and will be carried out on the Motorway as well as the on and off ramps.

The work will take 12 night shifts between 9pm and 5am until Friday, September 2, weather permitting.

We’ll never forget brave mate Tom Tributes flow from the community for veteran Llandilo firefighter who has passed away aged 84 after an incident where the top part of a tree landed him in intensive care resulting in his lungs collapsing.

“He got to a stage where he was getting too old to fight fires but he had done it for so long so it was time for him to slow it down,” Mr Luxford said.

Good friend of Mr Luxford and long-time serving member of Llandilo Rural Fire Service, Graham Chapman, said he will be missed.

“Tommy fought more fires than most people have had hot breakfasts,” Mr Chapman said.

“He was one of the original old style bush firefighters that took on major bushfires and won; a true legend.”

A funeral service was held for Mr Luxford earlier this week.

ocals from around the city farewelled long serving firefighter Thomas Luxford this week after he passed away at the age of 84.

Having lived in the Penrith region for most of his life, Mr Luxford was one of Llandilo’s longest serving firefighters, and helped the community in so many ways.

He was heavily involved in the Llandilo Progress Association and the Llandilo Hall Committee, and was also a volunteer for around 70 years for the Rural Fire Service.

Mr Luxford’s son, George Luxford, told the Weekender he was proud of his dad’s achievements.

“He was involved for a really long time with the fire brigade and started with them by just helping out in his neighbourhood whenever there was a fire which is how it all sort of happened in the older days,” he said.

“He loved doing it and did it well. A lot of the family was also involved in the fire brigade, including his seven children.”

Mr Luxford was made a life member of the Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade and was Captain and President for several years.

He hung up his helmet in the early 2000’s

Woman avoids stint in jail after brazen break-in

A woman who brazenly broke into visitor lockers at Villawood Detention Centre has narrowly avoided a lengthy stint behind bars.

Helen Michelle Larosse, 33, appeared before Penrith Local Court by audio video link on Monday, charged with goods in custody, larceny, aiding and abetting and obtaining financial benefit by deception.

The court heard the mother-of-one had been in custody since July 1 and had a history of dishonesty offences stemming from illicit drug use.

She was sentenced to 10 months in jail to be served by way of intensive correction order (ICO).

Magistrate Stephen Corry reminded her to keep out of trouble or risk serving the balance of her ICO in the slammer.

“Whilst you’re able to be in the community you’re still on a sentence of imprisonment,” he warned.

Man can’t remember how he got behind the wheel

A heavily intoxicated man who blacked out behind the wheel has been ordered to undertake 100 hours of community service.

Timothy Matthew Wilson faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with taking and driving a car without the owner’s consent and high-range drink driving after he blew 0.178 at Werrington on May 15.

The court heard the defendant and two of his mates consumed two bottles of vodka on the night of the offence and Mr Wilson had “absolutely no recollection” of how he came to be in the car and only “vaguely recollects” being put into a paddy wagon.

The court was told police detected Mr Wilson travelling at speed in the early hours of the morning with sparks flying from the front passenger side of the car, which had lost its tyre and was travelling on its rim.

Magistrate Georgia Knight was scathing, saying there was a “very substantial potential for danger”.

“It would not be outside the range to send you to jail today,” she said, noting he had been convicted of a prior mid-range offence back in 2010.

“Alcoholism doesn’t just go away while you’re waiting to come to court.”

He was barred from driving for six months, ordered to fit an interlock device to his car for 24 months and handed a supervised 12-month good behaviour bond.

Woman refused bail after failing to show up to court

A Lapstone woman has been refused bail after repeatedly failing to turn up to court.

Anna Sheena Saunders appeared before Penrith Local Court from the doc on Monday, having been picked up at Kingswood on a warrant.

The court heard the Explorers Road resident, currently on bail, had a number of non-appearances at both Penrith and Katoomba courts and had a history of property theft, warrants and breaches of bail.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said he had “no confidence” the mother-of-six would appear again if granted bail and denied release.

“She would still be at large if police hadn’t come across her today,” he said.

He noted she posed a risk of committing further serious offences, saying she had a background of larceny, stealing, opportunistic offences and was “prepared to enter properties she had no connection with”.

The matter was adjourned to August 10.

Woman to defend chocolate bar theft charges

A potty-mouthed Penrith woman who allegedly stole a chocolate bar from Coles has denied she has sticky fingers.

Melissa Bailey faced Penrith Local Court on Monday after she allegedly shoplifted

a Crunchie Caramel and resisted police arrest on May 22.

The accused indicated she would defend the charges, but pleaded guilty to a third offence of using offensive language.

The matter was adjourned to September 19.

Learner driver banned after being busted twice in an hour

A woman nabbed driving while disqualified twice in less than an hour has insisted she only had “good intentions”.

Jodie Brown told Penrith Local Court on Monday she knew she was in the wrong, but drove from Jamisontown to Nepean Hospital anyway to visit her partner who was in ICU. The court heard she was detected again, minutes later, when she attempted to park her car at Nepean Village.

“The trouble is, you’d just been told [that you were disqualified] by police,” Magistrate Georgia Knight said, noting the learner driver was also caught driving unaccompanied.

She was convicted, fined $200 and banned from driving for 12 months.

Expensive night of drinking

A Cambridge Park man has been hit with 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to a string of offences.

Jeffery Lia, 25, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with assault, damage property and failing to leave a licenced premises.

“See those stairs going down to your right. You know where they go?” Magistrate Roger Clisdell asked.

“That’s where you’ll be going next time you come to court.”

He was convicted, fined $750 for damaging a door and $250 for failing to leave a licenced premises. “$1,000 in fines and 100 hours of community service, drinking wasn’t worth it, was it?” Magistrate Clisdell said.

“You’ve heard what I’ve had to say – don’t come back a third time.”

Jail threat for man busted with stolen goods

Adam Troy Matthews has been slugged with fresh good behaviour bonds after being busted with stolen goods.

Mr Matthews fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with two counts of goods in custody and two counts of breaching his bond.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell warned the defendant he faced time in the big house if he failed to toe the line, especially if he came back before him.

“Mr Matthews, you’ve got four Section 9 bonds,” he said.

“If you breach them you’ll go to jail.”

Good behaviour bond for woman with excellent record

An “excellent” traffic record has seen Aleda Klara Graham keep her licence despite pleading guilty to drink driving.

Ms Graham faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with low-range drink driving.

“You’ve had a warning fired over the bow as well,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said. “No more drink driving, OK?” She was handed a nine-month good behaviour bond.

When is a road a road?

Man escapes charge

A man caught driving in a unit block car park has dodged a bullet after being found not guilty of driving while disqualified.

Penrith Local Court heard Dusty Faulkner was stopped prior to leaving the block of units, prompting his lawyer to argue the car park was not a public road.

Magistrate Clisdell agreed, saying he was not satisfied it was a road-related area as it wasn’t open to the general public.

He said it would be a different story if he had been intercepted crossing the footpath.

He was formally discharged of the offence.

Cambridge Gardens: Teenager charged over robbery

A 16-year-old boy allegedly attempted to rob two employees at a service station in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At about 12.15am on Saturday, August 6, the 16-year-old Penrith boy approached a 24-hour service station in Cambridge Gardens.

The employees, a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old man had the doors locked and were stocking the shelves when the boy pressed the door buzzer to ask for access to the store.

The employees allowed him to enter.

The boy then allegedly approached them and demanded cash and cigarettes.

Both employees attempted to move behind the security screen and shut the door behind them but the boy grabbed the handle and forced the door open.

He then allegedly became aggressive and took a ballpoint pen and threatened to stab the employees with it.

It’s alleged he also punched one of the employees.

A member of the public drove into the service station and saw the altercation happening and contacted police.

The boy was arrested as he was exiting the store and was charged with ‘robbery armed with offensive weapon’, and is due to appear in the Children’s Court on Monday, August 15.

Kingswood: Police investigate fast food store robbery

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward after a Kingswood fast food store was robbed on the weekend.

At about 3pm on Sunday, August 7, it’s alleged a man, in his 40s, approached a fast food store on the Great Western Highway, Kingswood, and demanded money from the 18-year-old employee.

The employee stood back from the register and his 44-year-old manager approached the register and opened it.

The man took a sum of money from the

register and ran along the Great Western Highway.

Investigations are continuing. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The man is described as Caucasian, about 180cm tall, in his 40s, and was wearing a black and white hooded jumper and blue denim jeans.

Kingswood: Man to front court after ‘ice’ discovery

A man was charged after police allegedly found a substance in his vehicle that they believe to be ‘ice’.

At about 9pm on Tuesday, August 2, police were patrolling the Kingswood area when they had cause to stop a car.

Police spoke with the 37-year-old North St Marys male driver and had cause to search him and his vehicle.

It’s alleged police located an amount of ‘ice’ in his car.

He was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, August 18.

Werrington: Police discover hydroponic cannabis house

A man was charged after police uncovered a hydroponic cannabis house in Werrington on Tuesday.

Just before 7am on Tuesday, August 9, officers from the North West Metropolitan Enforcement Squad – Penrith, attended a home on Gibson Avenue, Werrington, and executed a search warrant Police allegedly located cannabis plants and a large hydroponic setup inside the house.

A total of 110 cannabis plants and hydroponic equipment was seized by police with all items to undergo forensic examination.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Penrith Police Station.

The man was charged with ‘cultivate prohibited plant – commercial purpose’, and ‘steal electricity’.

Penrith Council has an ongoing commitment to make Penrith a more liveable city and provide habitat for native wildlife.

Over the past year, Council has planted 4000 trees, including those planted in partnership with schools as part of the Bushcare Education Program, National Tree Day, Trees for Mum, One Tree Per Child and other initiatives.

Planting trees has widespread benefits for the city. Temperatures in Penrith are on the rise, in part because of what is known as the Urban Heat Island Effect – an increase in heat absorbing surfaces like pavements, roads and buildings. By re-establishing green corridors and urban forests by planting trees we can make significant improvements in cooling the city.

enrith Councillor Jackie Greenow’s smile said it all when she saw the ‘Green Woman’ light up traffic lights in Penrith on Monday.

The first in the state, the lights in front of the Myer entrance on High Street now flash red and green silhouettes representing a woman instead of a man.

The move is to honour Cr Greenow’s 21 years of service to the Penrith area as Penrith’s longest serving Councillor, and celebrate women’s contribution to local government as a whole.

Cr Greenow said she is delighted to have the lights installed, but modestly deflected the focus to the work achieved during her time on Council’s Access Committee.

“Limited access causes a lot of problems for people when they’ve got something wrong with them. If you break your leg, you notice, as soon as your leg is fixed you don’t think about it anymore,” she said.

Cr Greenow was instrumental in the push for a pedestrian access path in Werrington along the Great Western Highway for the late Ronda Hopkins, and has been a strong advocate for women in local government.

She has also been a passionate advocate for St Marys, and the same Green Woman lights were also installed simultaneously at the Queen Street and Charles Hackett Drive intersection.

Cr Greenow hopes to secure another four years in Council after the September Local Government Elections, and promises she will keep being an ‘access crusader’.

“Access is a very big part of everything you do. We have a big link around the river but a part of it is not fully accessible.

A lot of people can’t do the walk,” she said.

Incredible display of mateship Penrith man plans to donate his kidney to ensure his friend has a better, healthier life JADE ALIPRANDI

chance meeting has led not only to a life-long friendship but will give Penrith local Anthony Lobo a new lease on life when he receives a kidney from a live donor.

Penrith resident Grant McKirdy met Mr Lobo at Kingswood Bowling Club over a game of lawn bowls almost 12 years ago, with the two remaining friends ever since.

Mr Lobo is currently suffering from renal failure with both his kidneys slowly failing over the last 17 months.

After several relatives got tested to see if they were a match to donate one of their kidneys, Mr McKirdy thought he should get tested too and was told he was a match to Mr Lobo.

“I saw my mother go through the same process when I was much younger – she had kidney disease and was on dialysis for 15 years,” Mr McKirdy told the Weekender.

“I saw her deterioration during the waiting period until she got her transplant and I’ve noticed Tony’s slight deterioration over the time he has had kidney disease, so I wanted to help.”

said he is just doing what needs to be done to help save a life.

“Many people have thought it’s dangerous for me or think I’m crazy to be a live donor, but it’s a simple operation and Tony needs it more than me,” Mr McKirdy said.

“I’ve done heaps of research and the statistics say a donee lives a better life with a live donor’s organ than a deceased one.”

Mr McKirdy is highlighting the benefits of being a live donor and said it’s something he will always look on fondly.

“If I can donate an organ to someone that needs it more than I do, I think it’s a great thing and I’ll be able to see the benefit with my friend right in front of me,” he said.

Mr Lobo said he will never forget the incredible gesture.

“It’s not very often you get a friend come up and say I’d like to donate my kidney to you – it absolutely blew me away and he is a great guy for doing it,” he said.

The pair are hoping the surgery will be done within the next few months.

Prospective live donors are required to undergo extensive testing to ensure that they are physically and mentally able to donate.

If the National Parks and Wildlife Service is saying that it’s a good idea, then it’s probably a good idea. Over-population is many times worse than a cull aimed at reducing the number of them out there, and you’ve only got to look a short distance away to see what results from overpopulation, and that’s often suffering to the animals themselves over a long period of time due to various factors such as stress from competition and potentially a lack of food / grazing areas, and increased incidence of disease. They might even go and eat themselves to death, depleting the food resources of the area leaving many to starve. Oh, and let’s not forget the effects of an unbalanced ecosystem on other organisms.

You might affect other ground-dwelling animals bringing about unnecessary harm to them, you might have them eat

Sad but sounds necessary in this circumstance. I can’t imagine the school would’ve taken this decision lightly or easily either.

Businesses brace for growth thanks to new major projects

Glenmore Park residents prepare for battle with education giant DALE DRINKWATER

he residents of Wargon Crescent in Glenmore Park are taking on Catholic education giant, the Diocese of Parramatta.

Many residents, including Neil Alchin, have lived in the quiet street since it was first built, but fear subdividing land across the road from their homes will lose the qualities that made them move there in the first place.

“Our concern is the loss of amenity in our street, the reason we bought in that street is because it’s a quiet little street,” he told the Weekender.

“The new road they propose to build is directly across from number eight, and the elderly couple who live there have lived there for 20 years.”

The elderly couple’s son, Matt Gatti, described the subdivision application as absolutely devastating.

Under the plans submitted to Penrith Council by the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta, three new roads will be built off Wargon Crescent to allow access to a further 13 blocks of land, for low density living.

igh density short and long-term accommodation and the transformation of our river front will be catalytic for local businesses, who were treated to a sneak peek of the new plans last month.

Compiled by town planners, Stimson and Baker Planning, four separate projects were presented at the Chamber of Commerce’s Business Matters Luncheon, that will change the face of the community, and in turn local businesses.

announced, which has not yet been submitted for approval by Penrith Council, is the redevelopment of Emu Hall in Emu Plains, which will be perfect for riverfront weddings.

Director, Warwick Stimson, said they hope the refurbishment for a restaurant and construction of a function centre will be finished by early 2018, before the Nepean River Green Bridge is complete.

Another $70 million project for 268 units in Thornton Estate will deliver half of them as affordable housing, and the restaurant precinct on Tench Reserve is expected to begin its 12-month construction period this November.

Residents in Wargon Crescent said they received notification from Council on the application, but residents on the other side of the block of land, on Jarrah Crescent did not.

A spokesperson for the Diocese said the subdivision of the land, owned by the Padre Pio Parish, will help pay off debt from the initial construction of the church.

He assured the Diocese is sympathetic to residents’ concerns, and will work with them on any “reasonable points”.

he new Sydney Zoo, which will be located just 20 minutes from Penrith, has committed to allocating 10 per cent of its future workforce to Aboriginal employees.

Sydney Zoo signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Castlereagh’s not-forprofit Muru Mittigar, a local organisation that seeks to advance Aboriginal culture and provide opportunities for learning and long-term employment.

The agreement will place Aboriginal people in full-time roles as rangers at the Blacktown-based zoo, and deliver a traditional Aboriginal experience through cultural tours, bush regeneration and animal care.

Sydney Zoo CEO, Jake Burgess, said visitors will learn more about the dreamtime experience of places, animals, objects, bush foods, medicines, and the relationship Aboriginal people have with the land.

“By integrating education about Aboriginal cultural heritage with the exhibition of the natural heritage, we can provide a holistic explanation of Aboriginal traditions to hundreds of thousands of people a year,” he said.

Age no barrier for dedicated runners 58 year age gap, but Jack and John share the same goal at this weekend’s City2Surf in Sydney DALE DRINKWATER

he young in age and young at heart will be representing our region in the upcoming City2Surf this Sunday, August 14.

From a determined young boy, eightyear-old Jack Veen, to 66-year-old John Willcocks who has been competing since 1971, Penrith locals are giving it their best shot.

Jack’s mother, Lisa Gale, is a regular at the event but this year is extra special as she will share the 14km course with her son, who suffers from life threatening hypopituitarism and a heart condition.

“We’re both excited to be doing it together, he’s a bit nervous that he won’t walk for that long, but he’s happy he’s going to be in the pram, which makes me nervous pushing him up ‘Heartbreak Hill’,” she said.

“I’m not sure Jack will last as he tires quickly. I think 15 minutes at a time will be enough for Jack. I’m hoping the atmosphere will push him a little bit further.”

Jack’s hypopituitarism has caused a lifethreatening hormonal disorder of adrenal insufficiency, where Jack’s body doesn’t produce cortisol to deal with stress, heat

and illness. Although Ms Gale didn’t reach a fundraising goal of $2,000 she set in January, she has reached almost half, which will be donated to the Australian Pituitary Foundation.

John Willcocks said he would have loved to have met Jack ahead of the big race, to give him some helpful tips.

After all, he has competed in every City2Surf since 1971.

“I’m going in it with my son, he’s been in it since he was nine-years-old, and now he’s 39,” he said.

“I was 21 at the time I started and I played sport and I always liked the running in the training but I’m doing it socially this year, I’m in a couple of running clubs so I try to keep fit.”

He is one of just 32 runners who have been so committed to the cause and he has no plans of stopping anytime soon.

“Whether I run, walk or go in a wheelchair, I will compete until I die. I have my kids lined up to push me,” he said.

Up until two years ago, Mr Willcocks was the only person to have completed all three Sydney Marathon, Sydney Half Marathon and City2Surf runs.

Locally, he founded the St Marys Community Fun Run and the St Marys Spring Festival Fun Run.

nspiring Glenmore Park student and founder of annual event Brooke’s Car Rally, Brooke Jones, is adding new fundraisers to her resume with a trivia night to be held tomorrow.

After starting Brooke’s Car Rally at just seven-years-old, Brooke, now 10, has moved in large strides since the inaugural event, raising over $27,000 for charity.

When Brooke was two-years-old her mother Amanda was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and successfully underwent eight months of chemotherapy at the Nepean Cancer Care Centre.

It’s because of this that Brooke has donated the majority of the funds towards the centre, with the remainder donated to The Children’s Hospital.

“I’m just really proud of myself and it feels really good to be helping people,” Brooke told the Weekender.

“I’m so excited for the trivia night because it’s my second type of event and it’s something different.”

Around 80 people are expected to attend the trivia night.

Brooke hopes to raise $10,000 by the end of the year, including what’s raised during her car rally, held later this year.

“We are hoping to make it even bigger next year as it will be the fifth year Brooke has run her car rally and hopefully we will raise $50,000,” Brooke’s mum Amanda said.

he Olympics have rolled around again, which means a return of the armchair experts on diving, badminton, fencing and GrecoRoman wrestling (and arguments about whether synchronised swimming is really a sport). At some point though, most of us watch the Olympic competitors with awe, and muse about what it must take for them to compete at that elite level.

Most small business owners are not so different from our Olympians. It takes stamina, commitment and many hours of hard work to build and grow a successful business. If you have been in business for longer than two years, you are amongst the ‘elite’ – and you have many similarities to Olympic competitors.

There would be few (if any) Olympians who have not experienced setbacks. To get where they are, they have learnt to be resilient, to ignore the critics and to bounce back from negative experiences.

These are all extremely important attributes for business owners. Firstly, it is being aware that there will be

setbacks and then it is being determined not to let those experiences defeat you.

All Olympians know that it is not enough just to have ability. Passion is vital: it is what will keep you going and willing to jump through hoops. Without passion, your business will become ‘just another job’ and won’t survive the long term.

Ian Thorpe, one of our best known Olympians, had a wonderful attitude before one Olympic final, when he was allocated Lane 5 (historically the ‘fastest lane’ is Lane 4). His response was, “There is water in every lane, so it is OK”. It is this sort of pragmatism that is important for business owners too.

There will be times when it appears that we have missed out on the best pathway to success, but sometimes we need a dose of pragmatism to realise that we need to make the best of what we have in front of us.

And to end with a classic Aussie way of viewing things, here is a quote from Olympic shooter Russell Mark: “A silver medal gets you as many free beers as a gold medal does”.

ecently I had a trend of clients who had eBay shops. Several clients had a diverse range of products that they thought would be popular on eBay and help lift their income. Were they right? Research is a cornerstone of an effective small business, so what research can be done in order to identify popular selling items?

For eBay, you simply need to type the web address www.eBay.com.au/trending.

This will give you a list of the top nine items that are currently being searched and purchased.

You can also do a keyword search on your product and then select “Sold Listings” from the “Show Only” section on the left hand side and sort your results by highest price. That way you can gauge how much customers are prepared to pay for similar goods.

Facebook is also handy for finding trends. On the right hand side of your personal feed are two sections worth looking at when researching. The first is “Trending on Facebook”. This tends to show what other users are looking at on Facebook.

Normally, it covers news items and major events, but occasionally it will reveal a company in the news or a product in the news.

The second section is the paid advertising section, underneath the trends.

These ads are specifically targeted to your Facebook habits and other users like you. You can gain an insight into what companies are actively promoting.

A quick way to assess trends is to join Pinterest. Pinterest is a popular social media platform in which the user will post pictures grouped according to their interest. These groupings are shared with friends and the general public. Watching the Pinterest feed will give you an instant glance at what users are currently sharing and can help you identify trends.

Pinterest is very popular with women and so if your target base is women, this is a great resource.

There are more resources available as well, such as Google Trends and Trend Hunter.

Olympic spirit in Emu Plains

T

he legacy of a 1950s Olympic swim star still lives today, through the local Eva Bory Swim School in Emu Plains.

Eva Bory’s life tells the incredible story of a young woman escaping political turmoil, and finding herself in the comfort and stability of an Australian way of life.

Mrs Bory was born in 1937 in Hungary, and early on pursued what ended up being a life long passion of swimming, eventually passing on her skills to the people of western Sydney.

At just 17-years-old in 1954, Mrs Bory helped her Hungarian relay swim team perform a world record breaking 4x100m medley relay at the Pentathlon World Championships in Budapest.

She held the 1955 world record for 100m backstroke, then in 1956 Mrs Bory got her taste of Australia when swimming in the Melbourne Olympics.

After the games was a time of political unrest in Hungary, and Mrs Bory was granted political asylum in Australia where she began a long career of establishing swimming schools.

Unlike her students, Mrs Bory taught herself to swim in a lake in Hungary and

went on to produce the Carlile swimming methods and program with Forbes Carlile in 1961.

Mrs Bory came to the Penrith area in the 1970s and by 1973, she had built the Emu Plains pool, where her passion for swimming lives on.

Terry Spinks, Operations Manager at Nepean Swim and Fitness, said Mrs Bory was a pioneer in learn to swim.

Nepean Swim and Fitness mourned the passing of Mrs Bory, who died in 2014 aged 77.

Also last week, the club mourned the passing of legendary swimming coach Forbes Carlile, who died aged 95.

One year ago in our August 14, 2015 edition of the Weekender, Penrith Council had announced plans to boost tourism in the region.

Then Mayor, Councillor Ross Fowler, channelled the likes of Paul Hogan and Lara Bingle in Council’s ‘Adventure Capital’ campaign, that aimed to bring a further one million visitors to the area per year.

A young girl was found hanging by her scarf at a before and after school care centre in Jamisontown, and was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious.

She made a speedy recovery, and an investigation was launched into how she was not found earlier.

Masters was moving in on Mulgoa Road, and posed a major threat to smaller timber and hardware stores in the area.

The former University of Western Sydney confirmed its name change to Western Sydney University as part of a $30 million rebranding strategy.

The Panthers were going up against the Warriors in Penrith, and the one and only John Williamson proved he was still true blue after chatting with us about his love for our country.

The Wanderers played at Pepper Stadium against the Brisbane Roar, in front of 6000 adoring fans.

W

hile we shouldn’t be getting too carried away with Penrith’s 38-18 win over a depleted Sydney Roosters side on Monday night, the one key thing to take out of the game is that the team now controls its own destiny.

Heading into the final month of the regular season, the Panthers sit in seventh spot on the ladder and a finals spot is theirs to lose.

If Penrith wants to make any sort of impact in the post-season, they need to be winning matches like this Sunday’s encounter with the struggling Newcastle Knights.

The Knights haven’t won since back in April (an 18-16 victory over the Wests

Tigers), and while they’ve had the season from hell, there’s been signs in recent weeks that they’re starting to play some football their fans can be proud of.

After a golden point tussle with Canberra back in round 17, they only narrowly went down to the competition leading Melbourne Storm, before faltering against the Sharks and then putting up brave efforts against Manly and Canterbury.

This is an ordinary Knights outfit but by no means are they easybeats this weekend.

What was most pleasing about Monday night’s effort from the Panthers was the tries they scored. From all over the park, the Panthers created and then executed opportunities and had it not been for a bit of bad luck, probably would have crossed the line a few more times too.

The Panthers are starting to gel with Bryce Cartwright and Nathan Cleary in the halves and while Cartwright’s move back to the forwards is inevitable, Anthony Griffin would most likely find it difficult to

change a winning formula now, even with Te Maire Martin waiting in reserve grade having recovered from a shoulder injury.

Cartwright was a little more patient on Monday night, though he still seems to panic at crucial moments, which could be critical if this Sunday’s game goes down to the wire.

The Panthers are good enough to ensure a close game is not on the menu this weekend but they need to treat Newcastle with respect. A lapse in concentration or a moment of complacency could well turn the match on its head and the Knights showed early in the second half against the Bulldogs last weekend that they can score points quickly when the opportunity presents itself.

If all goes to plan, this is a game the Panthers could win by 20 or 30 points.

But constantly during 2016, the plan has been thrown out the window. That’s why so many Panthers fans this week have expressed huge concern ahead of the trip up the M1; concerned that the good work

against the Roosters will be undone by a lazy performance against the competition’s cellar dwellers.

Concerns aside, the Panthers have the cattle to put a big score on the Knights and after their best month of football this season, I’m confident the side can get the job done and set up a blockbuster against the Wests Tigers next week at Pepper Stadium.

for young Penrith Panthers five-eighth Te Maire Martin, who took part in the AMF Charity Bowl-Off last Friday at AMF Penrith. Martin, who represented the Salvation Army, went head to head with 10 other Australian celebrities who were aiming to raise up to $10,000 for their nominated charities. Each celebrity had two bowls each, with each pin knocked down worth $1,000. Broadcast live on the ‘Today’ show, Martin went head to head with singer Damien Leith. The ‘Australian Idol’ winner picked up a spare, which resulted in $10,000 for his charity, while Martin also performed well knocking over nine pins which totalled $9,000 for the Salvos. be transformed at Pepper Stadium next year with bigger budgets and even more engagement with fans. The Panthers have tried tirelessly this year to boost crowd figures and enhance the match day expe-

anthers players were all smiles on Tuesday morning after the side posted their biggest win of 2016, smashing the Sydney Roosters 38-18 in front of nearly 10,000 fans at Pepper Stadium.

Penrith surged back into the top eight with the 20 point demolition, bypassing three teams on their way to seventh position on the NRL ladder.

To be assured of a spot in the finals, the Panthers need to win at least two of their remaining four games, which include matches against the Knights, Tigers, Titans and Sea Eagles.

Speaking with Extra Time, Panthers lock Trent Merrin said Monday night’s win was certainly one to savour.

“It’s a good vibe this morning, it’s a rollercoaster sport that we play and you’ve got to soak up the wins when you get them,” he said.

“Everyone was happy, but the job is not finished yet.

“We’ve put ourselves in a good position now but the main job is to be consistent and stay there.”

Penrith led the Roosters 18-6 at half-time – ironic considering the club were celebrating the 2003 Grand Final, which resulted in the Panthers beating the boys from Bondi with that exact same scoreline.

The Panthers then managed to dominate

the second half, scoring four unanswered tries before the second last-placed Roosters hit back with a quick late double of their own.

Merrin said while it was disappointing to let the Roosters back in the game, they are working hard on getting better at maintaining leads when they have them.

“There’s been a few games this season where we have a comfortable lead and we seem to drop our heads and let them back into it,” he said.

“There was a period there where they got two quick tries on us, I think we knew then that we had to keep the switch on and hold them out.

“It is something we are working hard on throughout the season, but it was just great to get in front by that score and get home comfortably.”

Penrith will look for back to back wins this Sunday afternoon when they travel to Hunter Stadium to battle the last-placed Newcastle Knights.

Newcastle may only have one win on the board this season but they are a far different beast at home, according to the former representative forward.

“You can’t take any team lightly no matter where they are sitting on the ladder,” Merrin said.

“You’ve got to prepare the best and not focus on the team that you are coming up against.

“We have to focus on ourselves and prepare the best way we can to get ourselves in a good position and get the job done.”

Te Maire Martin has once again been named in Penrith’s reserve grade team for this week’s clash against the Wyong Roos at St Marys Leagues Stadium.

The Panthers will be looking to bounce back this Saturday afternoon following a narrow 22-18 loss to the Wests Tigers at Pepper Stadium last weekend.

Boosted by the inclusion of NSW Origin hooker Robbie Farah, the Tigers scored the opening try after a lengthy 28 minutes of action to lead 6-0.

With half-time fast approaching Penrith finally managed to get on the board through Atonio Pelesasa. Josh Hall converted the try to send both teams to the sheds locked up at 6-6.

Wests hit the ground running in the second half, scoring after two minutes to regain the lead. Fortunately Penrith were able to hit back 14 minutes later through centre Andrew Heffernan.

The Tigers would go on to score the next two tries through Manaia Cherrington and Curtis Sironen, to edge out to a 22-12 lead.

However, the Panthers wouldn’t give up without a fight, with Zach Dockar-Clay crossing the line with two to go.

Penrith would have one final play in the last minute to clinch victory but weren’t able to muster up a try.

The Panthers now sit in sixth position.

» Holden Cup: The competition-leading Penrith Panthers can wrap up the Holden Cup minor premiership this weekend, if they manage to defeat the

Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium.

The Panthers bounced back into form last Monday night with a confidence boosting 40-22 win over the thirdplaced Sydney Roosters at Pepper Stadium.

The Panthers opened the scoring through Souths-bound centre Braidon Burns. The home side led at the break 20-10.

Penrith extended their lead just minutes into the second half with two quick tries to fullback Daniel Brown and halfback Jarome Luai.

The Roosters kept themselves in the game with a try in the 55th minute to make it 30-16. But the Panthers were far too good in front of their home fans, winning by 18 points.

Try scorers for the Panthers included: Caleb Aekins (2), Braidon Burns, Wayde Egan, Daniel Brown, Jarome Luai and Christian Chrichton. Luai kicked six goals.

» Ron Massey Cup: After enjoying

a well-earned break last weekend St Marys will return to the field this Saturday afternoon where they’ll aim for five wins on the trot.

Currently sitting in fourth position, St Marys will take on the second-placed Wentworthville Magpies at St Marys Leagues Stadium from 1pm.

St Marys are in outstanding form of late and a win this weekend will just about assure them of a place in the Ron Massey Cup finals with just three games remaining.

t took what lead singer Jason Singh describes as “150 text messages” to ex-bandmate Tim Watson to get 90s band Taxiride back together.

Best known for their hits ‘Get Set’ and ‘Everywhere You Go’ the rockers from Melbourne are back on the road with their original line-up for the first time since 2001.

“It came to a stage where I just really missed the sound of the four guys singing together,” Jason said of the reason behind the band reforming.

“It had been 10 years since Tim Watson and I had even spoken. I just thought stuff this, I’m just going to pick up the phone; so I started texting him and texting him and texting him.

“I ended up getting a reply on New Year’s Eve the year before last.”

That reply led to a meeting, rehearsals and a string of gigs over the last year.

The time apart has seen Taxiride develop as individuals, and as musicians, but for Jason the appeal of those hit songs hasn’t changed.

“We realised that the band’s still really relevant so that inspired us to shoot for bigger things again,” he said.

While the reformation process has been a relatively smooth one, things weren’t quite as cohesive for the band the first time round.

There was a struggle to find common ground between different personalities who were living in each other’s pockets throughout years of touring and recording commitments.

“It’s not often that the four guys in

Taxiride would hang out, probably never, and that’s the thing that we used to fight against and push against and rebel against with each other, trying to make everyone like yourself,” Jason said.

“But now everyone’s grown up. I’ve had kids, Tim Watson’s just had his first child, it changes you a lot and your perspective changes a lot, things that would have annoyed you just don’t anymore.

“We all still have our differences but one thing we have realised is that it’s those differences that make us special.”

Bringing their distinct talents together to create their signature four piece harmony was what initially took Taxiride from the pubs of Melbourne to the boardrooms of some of the biggest record companies in the world.

“We had 11 record deals on the table from everyone on the planet trying to

sign the band,” Jason said.

“We had Randy Jackson flying out from New York and Ahmet Ertegun flying out from the UK to try and sign our little band, which was ridiculous.”

With a tour with fellow 90s band The Badloves kicking off this month the obvious question for fans is whether there’s a new Taxiride album on the horizon.

“That’s my next 150 text messages,” Jason laughed.

“I’d love to get into doing some new music.

“We’ll either explode and break up again, or it will be the best thing ever,” he laughed Taxiride and the Badloves will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 9 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. To purchase tickets, visit www.rootyhillrsl. com.au or call 9677 4916.

Masters of theatrical satire ‘The Wharf Revue’ will be back at The Joan this month and, with the election been and gone, they’re sure to have plenty of material to work with.

An institution on the theatre scene, this hilarious production will once again see creators Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott return to the stage, joined this year by Katrina Retallick who is no stranger to satire having

he next concert in the Sundays at The Joan series will feature Grammy Award winning artist Fiona Joy. Fiona contributed the track ‘Grace’ to the album ‘Winds of Samara’ which took out the award for Best New Age Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

The vocalist and pianist is no stranger to accolades having earned a staggering 50 awards throughout her career.

Local audiences will have the chance to experience Fiona’s melodic music which spans across the contemporary, classical and jazz genres and draws influence from new age mysticism and

world music.

Fiona will be accompanied by the Blue Dream Ensemble which features Rebecca Daniel from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Dr John Napier on cello, musician James Englund and world-renowned Mongolian throat singer Bukhu.

The performance will be followed by a post-show reception including complimentary glass of wine with cheese and crackers and a meet and greet with the artists.

The Academy Award-nominated star plays Michelle Darnell, a businesswoman who was at the top of her game before she was sent to prison for insider trading.

But Michelle is determined to claw her way back.

After finishing her sentence she moves in with her former assistant Claire (Kristen Bell) and sets out to earn back the respect of her peers and improve her public image.

The business tycoon joins up with a group of young girls selling brownies and her business skills take over with

hilarious results.

Starring alongside McCarthy is Peter Dinklage as the jilted lover and entrepreneur Renault, Kathy Bates as Michelle’s former mentor Ida Marquette, and Kristen Schaal as Scout Leader Sandy.

‘The Boss’ is a family affair with Melissa McCarthy writing the screenplay alongside her husband Ben Falcone, who also took on directing duties.

If you love Melissa McCarthy’s brand of comedy then ‘The Boss’ might just be worth checking out.

Ê HBO has confirmed that ‘Game of Thrones’ will finally come to an end after its eighth season. While season seven will arrive late 2017, the world’s most popular show will wind up at the end of 2018. A spin-off series is on the cards as well, so it’s not all bad news. Ê Foxtel is closing down the SoHo channel on October 1 and replacing it with Binge. Museum of Printing Short break ahead

The Penrith Museum of Printing Inc. will be taking part in the annual Penrith Show at the end of this month, before closing down for a few weeks while the area is extended.

For some, this might be very unsettling – but not for David who wrote the Psalm.

David continues, “You are around me on every side; you protect me with your power. Even if I flew away

beyond the east or lived in the farthest place in the west you would be there to lead me, you would be there to help me”.

David concludes, “Examine me, O God, and know my mind; test me and discover my thoughts. Find out if there is any evil in me… guide me in the everlasting way”.

The fact God knows everything about David does not fill him with fear; rather, David confidently turns to the God who knows him, who made him. He looks to God to sort out his life, to get his mind and thoughts right, and he looks to God for direction on how to live.

Rather than being fearful that God knows you so well, look to him as the one who made you and who therefore knows and plans the best for you.

Pyometra is a common disease in undesexed female dogs that requires major surgery. Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that results in the accumulation of pus within the cavity of the uterus. It is generally seen in older female cats and dogs who have not been desexed.

Pyometras can become life threatening especially if the uterus ruptures inside the body. Untreated pyometra can cause dehydration, kidney failure and eventual death from infection and toxin accumulation.

What causes a pyometra?

Each time a dog has a season (generally twice a year), she undergoes hormonal changes. These changes affect the uterus and cervix and make infection more likely.

Infection is usually caused by a very common organism called E Coli. The disease usually becomes apparent several weeks or months following heat.

What are the signs of pyometra? Pyometra is obvi-

ously only seen in females and can occur at any age but more commonly occurs in dogs over the age of six. Early signs can be subtle and could just include increased licking around the back end or just being a bit tired and not as hungry as usual. In the advanced stages you may notice that she drinks lots of water and sometimes you may even find a reddish-brown discharge coming from the back end. Some dogs will have a distended abdomen and become very depressed and tired.

How is pyometra diagnosed? A good history is generally suggestive of pyometra but x-rays/ultrasound and blood tests are generally needed to confirm the diagnosis and assess how sick the dog is.

Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, the best treatment option is surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus as soon as possible.

Some animals are too sick for an anaesthetic and need to be stabilised prior to surgery.

Can it be prevented? Yes! The only way to prevent this condition is by having your dog desexed. If you are not intending to breed your dog, then she should be desexed at any time from six months of age.

Blend it Back before the Internet we used to memorialise fruit in oil paintings. These days that fruit has been peeled, blended, turned into a smoothie bowl, photographed and posted online.

Again, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a

smoothie bowl, and if you find them tasty then by all means go for it, but there’s also nothing wrong with a couple of pieces of fruit each day instead.

Whole fruits are cheaper, contain more fibre and aren’t as energy dense as smoothies which often contain far more than the recommended two serves of fruit.

Going green I’m not sure who’s doing the marketing for kale but damn they’ve done an amazing job.

They’ve actually managed to make a not-so-pleasant tasting leaf ‘cool’.

The issue I have with this is not that people are eating more kale, the more vegetables you consume the better, my issue is that people think kale is the be all and end all of green leafy vegetables.

I’m sure kale haters will be happy to know that Popeye’s favourite veg spinach is a very worthy substitute, as is any green leafy vegetable really.

Bring back the bread I feel a little sorry for the sandwich. Due to its humble status among meals it doesn’t tend to show up on social media quite as much as its more flamboyant cousin, the burger.

But honestly sandwiches are a fantastic meal, both taste and nutrition wise.

Bunions can quickly turn from mild to severe in a short period of time.

As they are progressive in nature, it is very important

to have bunions assessed as soon as you start to see any displacement take place.

Early treatment allows for increase chances of minimising the disorder’s progression.

Although bunions tend to run in families, it is the faulty mechanical structure that is passed down — not the bunion itself.

Parents who suffer from poor foot mechanics can pass their problematic foot type on to their children, who in turn are prone to developing bunions.

The abnormal functioning caused by this faulty foot development can lead to abnormal pressures being exerted on and within the foot, often resulting in bone and joint deformities such as bunions and hammertoes.

Although wearing shoes that crowd the toes won’t actually cause bunions, it sometimes makes the deformity get progressively worse. This also explains the high occurrence of the disorder among women.

oyota’s rugged yet refined LandCruiser Prado has topped 250,000 sales in Australia almost exactly 20 years after the first model was introduced here in 1996.

Prado celebrates its 20th local anniversary this month after passing the quarterof-a-million sales landmark last month.

Cumulative sales for Prado have now reached 250,857 vehicles, making Australia the fifth biggest market in the world for this vehicle.

Only two other SUVs – both of which are Toyota vehicles – have posted more sales in this country: LandCruiser wagon and RAV4.

Prado has been the best-selling vehicle against its direct competitors in 13 years and runner-up six times. It has been the yearly top-seller among all SUVs on five occasions.

It remains Australia’s best-selling large SUV so far this year with the Toyota Kluger in second place.

Toyota Australia’s Executive Director Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb, said the success of Prado over 20 years reflected the appeal of its spacious interior, car-like luxury and off-road prowess.

ustralia’s first National Hockey League (NHL) draft pick Nathan Walker paid a surprise visit to Penrith Ice Palace last week, giving back to the grassroots level of the game.

The 22-year-old, who was snapped up by the Washington Capitals in the 2014 NHL Draft, was a welcome addition to the Flyers Ice Hockey Club’s training session last Thursday night.

The Flyers are the junior club of Walker, who is regarded as Australia’s best ice hockey export after he became the first

and only Aussie to be drafted by an NHL team.

Speaking exclusively with the Weekender, Walker said he loves returning to his junior club to help train the next wave of ice hockey stars.

“I always told myself that if I ever made it that I would never forget where I come from,” he said.

“Every time I get asked I always do my best to get out to these events and see the kids.”

On the back of Walker’s success on the world stage, the Flyers have doubled their junior base over last two years.

Walker said he was proud to see the sport growing in Australia but believes

more needs to be done to encourage kids to pick up a hockey stick.

“The sport is only going to keep growing especially with the amount of kids that are joining up,” he said.

“The sport doesn’t have millions of people watching on TV in Australia or live in person, so it’s really tough in that way to grow the game.

“Hopefully, one day, kids are grabbing sticks and skates instead of a rugby ball.”

Walker will return to the US at the end of the month where he’ll begin training for the upcoming ice hockey season.

Walker currently plays for Washington’s feeder side, Hershey Bears, where he’s working hard to be promoted into North

America’s top competition, the NHL. “The coaches are very happy with how things are going and they make sure I’m heading in the right direction,” he said.

“It’s pretty tough to make that step up [to the NHL], there’s so many factors that come into play but you’ve got to have the right mindset, play well and hopefully one day you’ll get the call up.”

The Flyers are currently on the hunt for the next Nathan Walker, with new players aged between five and 17-years-old encouraged to sign-up.

Training is held at 7pm every Thursday night at Penrith Ice Palace.

ust over two months remain until thousands of athletes from around Australia and the world descend on Penrith for the annual Atmosphere Nepean Triathlon.

This year, students from Penrith Anglican College will compete during the October 22-23 weekend at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

The students, who are already in training-mode, will be joined by 1400 other fierce competitors, who will strut their stuff in one of the largest triathlon events in Australia.

There are four different distance triathlons across the weekend, with athletes from far and wide coming to Penrith to battle it out for thousands of dollars worth of prize money.

On Sunday, October 23, the 35th anniversary of the famous Nepean Triathlon will get underway.

This year competitors will have to swim 1km in the Olympic rowing lake, followed by a traffic-free 30km cycle along Castlereagh Road before wrapping up with a 10km run inside the complex.

“It’s really exciting for the sheer fact that it now gives a pathway for our juniors to aspire to,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys who are in the Australian team already and they’ve got something to strive for now.”

Both softball and baseball are huge in Japan, so it was a no-brainer that the pair would return in time for the Tokyo Games.

Softball Australia CEO Chet Gray said the decision creates hope for players to achieve their lifelong ambition of playing in the Olympics.

“It’s fantastic for softball to regain its world ranking status,” he said.

Baseball Australia CEO, Brett Pickett, said it was a great step forward for baseball Australia.

“We have a great Olympic tradition in baseball, having secured silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics,” he said.

“Our Men’s National Team have just returned from the Honkbal Tournament in Holland, where we were able to get some important international experience into our younger players.”

Locally, both softball and baseball club officials are hopeful their inclusion into the 2020 Olympics will boost player numbers in the coming years.

“Registrations are open right now but if we could get more juniors playing, that would be fantastic,” Mr Saunby said.

“Being part of the Olympics is a big thing and will help put us back on the map in the area,” Mr Glover added.

Hill to run Rugby League World Cup Respected and experienced rugby league administrator Andrew Hill has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Rugby League World Cup 2017 (RLWC2017) Organising Committee.

The RLWC2017 Chairman, Dr George Peponis, announced the appointment on Wednesday following the recent resignation of former Chief Executive Officer Michael Brown.

Heartbreak, pride and hope: Mixed emotions as locals represent Penrith at Rio Olympic Games NATHAN TAYLOR

hen the 2016 Rio Olympics kicked off last Saturday morning, Penrith’s hopes of a medal rested on the shoulders of nine inspirational locals who would compete against the best of the best in the biggest sporting competition in the world.

After a week of highs, lows and some encouraging results, just a few locals remain in the hunt for Olympic glory.

Penrith-born swimmer Jake Packard was the first local to begin his Rio Olympics experience when he contested the Men’s 100m Breaststroke.

The 22-year-old, who now lives on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, managed to do enough to reach the Semi-Final of the event, but his time of 59.48 wasn’t quite enough to qualify him for the Final.

Packard’s debut Olympics isn’t over just yet, he’s due to compete in Australia’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay Team this Saturday morning.

Penrith-born cyclist Amanda Spratt was the next local to do Penrith proud when she competed in the Women’s Road Race event.

Fellow Penrith paddler Ian Borrows also bowed out of his first Olympics after

missing out on a place in the C1 Final by an agonising 0.09 of a second.

After reaching the Semi-Finals earlier in the week, the 26-year-old Penrith Valley Canoeing member fell just short of making the 10-man Final.

Penrith’s best medal hope at Rio still lies with local world champion kayaker Jessica Fox, who was scheduled to compete in the Women’s K1 Semi-Final and subsequent Final early this morning (Friday, August 12).

The 22-year-old Leonay resident, who won silver at the 2012 Olympics in London, qualified second fastest for this morning’s Semi-Final.

Boxer and Londonderry local Daniel Lewis is through to the Round of 16 after defeating Poland’s Tomasz Jablonski on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old will fight for a place in the Quarter Finals this Saturday morning.

Fellow boxer Shelley Watts, who trains in Penrith, begins her Olympic campaign this Saturday morning in the 60kg Women’s event against Italy’s Irma Testa.

Penrith-born runner Ben St Lawrence will compete in the Men’s 10,000m race on Sunday morning, while Penrithborn diver Melissa Wu began her third Olympics on Thursday competing in the Women’s 10m Platform event.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers are through to the Semi-Finals of the Division 1 Youth League Women’s competition following a tight 73-70 win over the Hornsby Spiders last weekend.

Emily Potts topscored for the Panthers with 20 points.

Penrith will now play the Northern Suburbs Bears this Saturday afternoon for a place in the Grand Final.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens Netball NSW Premier League team have missed out on a finals berth, losing to the Sutherland Stingrays 74-54 in the final round of the competition.

The Panthers finished the season in last place with two wins and 11 losses.

Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s team are through to the finals after posting a 62-44 win over the Stingrays.

The Panthers will play North Shore United in the Semi-Finals.

NETBALL: It’s been a big week for Penrith netball junior Paige Hadley, who has been named in the Australian Diamonds squad for the upcoming 2016/17 International Series.

Hadley, who also plays for the NSW Swifts, also won the club’s Coaches’ Award for an outstanding recent season.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams

have now won 13 straight games, hammering the South West Sydney Magpies 125-14 in Round 17 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Penrith’s Phillip Aumann led the way with nine goals.

This Saturday afternoon the Rams will take on the Camden Cats in the final round of the competition.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Ramettes have enjoyed their biggest win of the year, smashing the Campbelltown Blues 93-0 in Round 15 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 1 competition.

Nikki Perrett topscored for the Ramettes with six goals.

This Sunday morning Penrith will travel to Blacktown International Sportspark to take on the Manly Warringah Giants in an Elimination Final.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have lost the outright lead on the NPL2 table after dropping points against a determined North Shore Mariners outfit at Blacktown Football Park.

A 1-1 draw against the bottom-placed Mariners means the Wanderers are now equal first in the NPL with Sydney FC sitting above them on goal difference.

This weekend the Wanderers will travel to Bossley Park to take on Marconi.

ocal softball and baseball clubs are rejoicing after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed to add the two sports to the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

Softball and baseball were among six new sports added to the Tokyo Olympics along with skateboarding, sports climbing, karate and surfing.

Softball and baseball made their official Olympic debuts in 1996 and 1992 respectively but were both cut following the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith City Softball Association President Justin Saunby was delighted to have the sport back on the world’s biggest stage.

“It’s very exciting and it’s good to have softball back on that platform,” he said.

“It’s something for our juniors and current State and Australian players to strive towards and, for that aspect alone, it’s brilliant.”

Penrith Baseball Club President, Logan Glover, was also adamant that the sport’s inclusion will do wonders for the game.
