Community “shut out” of planning Mayor John Thain slams State Government move to cut Council out of DA approval process ALENA HIGGINS

enrith Councillors have slammed new State Government legislation stripping them of their powers to determine controversial development applications (DAs), claiming the “retrograde step” will gag community input.

From March 1, 2018, no DAs will come before Greater Sydney or Wollongong Councillors following a suite of changes to the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act to “guard against” Local Government corruption and “inappropriate relationships between councils and developers”.

The bill, which mandates Council introduce State Government-approved Independent Hearing and Assessment Panels (IHAPs) to decide DAs between $5 million and $30 million, was “rushed through” on August 7, Council claims.

It also included many unexpected amendments inconsistent with previous discussion papers released in January, most notably that consent authority functions will no longer be exercisable by Councillors.

Penrith Mayor John Thain, who predicted the fall out would be as “big

as Council amalgamations”, said he was “deeply concerned” and “distressed” that Council may no longer have any control over the changing shape of the city.

“I acknowledge there has been corruption in Local Government, some Councils have been less than perfect,” he said during Monday night’s emotive Policy Review Committee Meeting.

“But you cannot tarnish every Council with the same brush,” he declared before garnering Councillors’ approval to vehemently oppose the amendments.

Under the new legislation, Council must establish a four-person panel from a pool of experts approved by NSW Planning Minister, Anthony Roberts.

Of these, Council will choose two, the Minister one, while a fourth person will be a community representative chosen by Council to speak on behalf of the people who live in the area of the proposed development.

Liberal Councillor Ross Fowler wondered whether the Berejiklian Government had a “death wish”, asserting Penrith locals were being “punished” because of the “sins of others”.

“I think as community representatives, everyone around this table has to be concerned,” he said.

Currently, only about one per cent of DAs come before Penrith Councillors for consent, with the majority being determined by Council officers under delegated authority.

However, any Councillor can call for a DA to be redirected to a Council meeting at present, which will be scrapped from March 1 next year.

In a statement, Mr Roberts said the mandatory IHAPs would bring expertise, transparency and integrity to DA assessments at the local level.

“It is essential that the Government has a transparent and accountable process in place when assessing DAs of significant value, when there is a conflict of interest for the council or developer, or when they are of a sensitive nature,” he said.

Citizenship issue needs to be resolved Sitting next to Small Business Minister Michael McCormack at a function recently, he revealed that he’d phoned his mother just to make sure he wasn’t a citizen of another country.

She was already ahead of the game.

“I’ve pulled out your birth certificate and it’s on the mantle here at home,” she told him.

The citizenship bombshells that have rocked the Australian Parliament this year claimed another potential victim on Monday when Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce revealed he may be a New Zealand citizen.

Questions over dual citizenship have already forced two Greens senators to quit, Nationals senator Matt Canavan to resign as Resources Minister, and put the positions of other MPs in doubt.

And like Mr McCormack, every politician in Canberra has probably checked their background as this saga continues to unfold.

It is prohibited for members of Parliament to hold dual citizenship under the constitution, but is it something that should be changed?

Sure, there’s more important constitutional issues that need addressing, but this whole citizenship saga has exposed a flaw that has unnecessary consequences.

Barnaby Joyce is about as Australian as they come. Born in Tamworth, he is a fighter for rural Australia and Aussie values.

His father happens to have been born in New Zealand and came to Australia in 1947. Any citizenship Mr Joyce holds in New Zealand is purely a quirk of the system and not a measure of his ability.

And while I didn’t necessarily agree with her views or her PR stunts, Larissa Waters too was somebody who had plenty to contribute to Parliament but now finds herself turfed because of this ridiculous criteria.

As our multicultural society continues to evolve and develop, dual citizenship is surely something that shouldn’t be a stumbling block for people entering or staying in the Parliament.

Surely there’s enough checks and balances in place these days to dissolve any fears that a politician is doing the bidding for another country, or is in any way doing Australia a disservice because of a citizenship they didn’t even know about, or had no choice in receiving.

Nothing is ever simple in politics and I doubt resolving this issue will change that, but this is something that really needs to be looked at before we lose too many good people from our Parliament.

That was posted by a friend of mine on Facebook last week, as the marriage equality debate rages on ahead of the postal plebiscite.

This friend and I have similar views on marriage equality, but I still cringed a little when I read that.

You see as much as I support same-sex marriage, I can also respect the other side of the debate. In fact, it’d be hypocritical not to be tolerant of those who sit on the ‘no’ side of this issue.

My friend is preaching her views, and I presume a part of that is trying to convince others to share them, but wants to ignore the other side preaching theirs.

And this is the big problem confronting the ‘yes’ campaign – a lack of respect has the potential to lose those who have yet to make up their mind.

You cannot ask people to listen to you if you refuse to listen to them.

If ordinary Australians feel they can’t express their concerns without being labelled homophobic or howled down in protest, their next move may be a revolt against the grain.

Australia has proved plenty of times in the last 100 years that we’re a country open to change. Law reform has defined much of our current freedoms.

There’s plenty of ways to ensure this campaign – from both sides – is run without hatred and vitriol.

If either side steps over the mark, you can be sure it’ll have the opposite effect to what was intended.

Political correctness lands at Council “Regulation, regulation and more regulation”: Councillors lament introduction of new policy interacting on Council business, the policy preamble states.

Cr Davies said Council was a “shining light” because it got problems “fixed, quickly”, and feared endorsing the policy could stifle the ease and efficiency in which things are done.

Councillor Ross Fowler also lamented the shift, calling it a “sad day”.

Cr Fowler said Council had operated “exceptionally well” for at least the last 25 years and there was a “degree of camaraderie” and a “can do” philosophy without all the bureaucracy.

“Unfortunately we live in a society where you have to cater to the lowest denominator,” he said.

“It’s a reference to today’s society. Regulation, regulation and more regulation.”

The conduct obligations include those set out within the Office of Local Government’s (OLG) Model Code of Conduct and are essentially the minimum standards expected of Council officials as determined by the OLG. Apart from recognising the different roles and obligations of Councillors and staff, including that each must not influence or pressure the other, the draft policy also confirms arrangements for access to Council buildings.

n what is being dubbed a sign of the times, interactions between Penrith Councillors and staff have been formalised, with a policy adopted to provide guidance, reduce inappropriate behaviour and facilitate effective communication.

As part of the draft framework, the previous “open door policy” will be restricted, with Councillors only able to communicate with select members of staff nominated by Council’s General Manager, Alan Stoneham.

They must also not personally direct staff other than through the GM. Councillor Greg Davies begrudgingly moved the policy, but made it clear he was not happy about it.

“I’ve been on Council for 22 years coming up, and one thing that’s always been great about this Council is that you could talk to anyone,” he said during Monday night’s Policy Review Committee Meeting.

“I think we’re creating a rod for our back down the track.”

While the Code does not prevent Councillors and staff from communicating in a social context, it does impose conduct obligations on Councillors and staff when

n what can only be described as a complete oversight by the State Government, the Australian Paramedics Association (APA) has revealed that Penrith’s new Ambulance Superstation simply isn’t big enough.

The Superstation, also called the Nepean Paramedic Response Centre, will incorporate existing sites at Tregear, Mt Druitt, Colyton and the staff at the current Penrith site who, as well as managers and administration staff, will be starting and ending all shifts at the centre.

APA representative and western Sydney paramedic Liu Bianchi said the Penrith site does not meet the requirements for an area that is rapidly expanding.

“Our site is not going to be large enough to house the ambulances or the staff from the sector office,” Ms Bianchi told the Weekender.

“It’s not going to meet the future needs of the people of western Sydney.”

“From my understanding as of today, they do not have a location for them to move into,” Ms Bianchi said.

Ms Bianchi blamed a lack of consultation with those on the ground for the embarrassing bungle.

“There is no way that all the staff, the managers and their cars will be able to fit into that Nepean site. There is no room,” she said.

“That’s what happens when you don’t consult more clearly.”

Inadequate size is only one of the problems local paramedics will face, with longer commute times and the location of the site on High Street creating more pressure on a system already at breaking point.

“As much as they say that the Tregear and Colyton sites won’t shut down, the staff will have to begin and end their shifts at the Superstation,” Ms Bianchi said.

Even on the whistle on an urgent job, depending on which end of Tregear it could take me 20 minutes. “Another issue is where the Paramedic Response Centre is located in High Street. “We have raised the concerns that we have a number of schools in the local area, we have a huge intersection there with not much room to move out.�

With traffic build-up, high pedestrian activity and little options to move, APA is hopeful that Roads and Maritime Services will be able to solve some traffic issues by providing the centre with the ability to hold nearby traffic lights for the ambulances when needed.

Ms Bianchi said that Ambulance NSW and Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard, have not been “forthcoming� in the information provided, and believe a lot of decision making has been made on the premise of saving money, rather than the best way to save lives. “How much money do you actually save by creating a bigger monster,� she asked.

Ambulance NSW was contacted for comment but did not provide a statement before the Weekender went to print.

In June, the State Government proudly announced nearly $1 billion for ambulance services in the State Budget.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the Government was “committed to supporting� paramedics.

Opening of Bankstown Superstation provides a worrying sign for response times as Paramedics express anger EMILY NEWTON

ith Penrith’s Ambulance Superstation set to open at the end of this year, questions of effectiveness remain following the disappointing response times of the newly opened Bankstown Superstation.

Since the Bankstown Superstation opened in April, there has been a significant drop in the number of Priority One (P1) calls responded to by paramedics in the area within the 10-minute benchmark.

In May last year, there were no P1 cases that took longer than 10 minutes, a stark contrast to this year with 191 cases, figures obtained by Channel Nine under freedom of information laws show.

Gerard Hayes, Health Services Union NSW Secretary, said the Government’s Superstations plan is a “fiasco� with major concerns attached. “Sadly, it’s the Sydney community that is feeling the impact as ambulances take longer to battle congested traffic and arrive on time,� he said.

He also believes that through base stations, paramedics will be covering a greater area and local knowledge will be lost.

Ambulance NSW has defended the Superstation model, assuring patients that the closest available paramedic will respond to patients in an emergency. “Currently, just three of the nine announced Superstations are now operational,� an Ambulance NSW spokesperson said.

Crameri concerned about housing plan ALENA HIGGINS

ore subdivisions are on the cards as Penrith Council tries to stay ahead of the region’s rapid housing demand.

Without intervention, the remaining release area, which has capacity for about 4,500 dwellings, is expected to be sapped in three to four years, prompting Council to adopt an expression of interest program to fast track identification and planning of more suitable sites.

During Monday night’s Policy Review Committee Meeting, Councillors voted to commence the Accelerated Housing Delivery Program in a bid to supply an additional 3,000-plus dwellings in the next three to five years and avoid a potential shortfall.

This involves inviting landowners capable of producing 1,000 or more lots to collaborate with Council and make a submission.

While realising Council has to provide more housing, Councillor Kevin Crameri remains “uneasy” about parts of the approach.

“Where as before it was designated, Council set out what people had to do, this just seems airy fairy to me,” he said.

“It just doesn’t seem open and transparent.

“If an area is designated, everyone is on a equal footing, this way I don’t know if everyone is.

“Really we should be setting an area so we can decide where things are going.”

According to a report prepared for Councillors, the successful proponent/s will be required to go through the normal planning proposal process and will be assessed against a “stringent criteria”.

It is forecast approximately half of all additional housing in Penrith over the next 20 years will be provided in new land release areas, otherwise known as “greenfield” sites.

In addition, the draft West District Plan identifies the need to provide a minimum of 41,500 homes in the next 20 years to meet the surging population, with Penrith having the most capacity for dwelling delivery to achieve the West District’s targets.

This process is anticipated to be concluded by the end of the year with the proponent presenting a planning proposal in early 2018 for Council’s consideration and endorsement.

hat do our MPs think about same-sex marriage?

Prue Car (State Member for Londonderry) I support samesex marriage. I support ending all forms of discrimination against same-sex couples.

It is incomprehensible to me that in Australia in 2017, two people who love each other cannot get married. It’s time for this to change.

My long held view is that love is love and we should just get on with it and move on.

The plebiscite is a complete waste of money and time. The majority of Australians support same-sex marriage and the Parliament should act accordingly.

Unfortunately, it looks like it is going to happen and I will be supporting the ‘yes’ campaign in every way I can.

I will be voting yes. I encourage those people who are disenchanted with the plebiscite to still participate!

postal vote on marriage equality is almost certain to go ahead, despite lingering questions surrounding the $122 million poll.

The Senate voted to effectively kill off the original plebiscite last week, pushing Australia towards the voluntary postal plebiscite run by the Australia Bureau of Statistics, the agency responsible for last year’s #CensusFail.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie and other same-sex marriage advocates have already launched a High Court challenge against the voluntary postal survey.

But with only a week left for enrolment, campaigners on either side have no time to wait for the High Court’s ruling.

Glenmore Park’s Anke Vermeulen and Shan Brown have been engaged since ANZAC Day 2015 with just one complication – they can’t actually marry in Australia.

“I didn’t think about marriage equality at all, I just felt like a normal couple and didn’t consider at all having to wait,” Ms Vermeulen said, reflecting on her proposal.

“It was mostly that I knew very early on that she was the one to spend the rest of my life with.”

With advocacy groups concerned that campaigns in the lead-up to the vote could become hate speech and discrimination, the digital world is already affecting people.

“I get really upset about it,” Ms Vermeulen said.

“I always get caught up in reading people’s comments, and a lot of them are quite hurtful.

“Bad is always going to be more effective than good, it’s going to have more resonance and hurt a lot of people.”

Ms Vermeulen said she doesn’t understand the argument that being gay is a “slippery slope to bestiality and paedophilia”.

While they have thought about travelling overseas to elope, ultimately the pair want to get married in Australia.

“In the end if you get married overseas and you come back, it’s not recognised,” Ms Vermeulen said.

“Shan just wants to be able to get married here as a principle and have her dad walk her down the aisle.

The ABS will run the process with ballot papers going to every enrolled Australian from next month, to be returned by November 7 with a result on November 25, dependent on current and any additional legal challenges.

Current polls suggest the ‘yes’ vote is highly likely to win.

Man to be sentenced in October over horrifying assault on baby

A man who turned the hot water on and then left a 10-month-old in the bath of a Penrith home while he went to have a cigarette will be sentenced later this year.

Atare Tepania, 24, entered a guilty plea at Penrith District Court on Tuesday on the first day of what was supposed to be the start of his trial.

Court documents show the baby’s mother left the boy with the 24-year-old in late 2015 while she went to the nearby shops.

He sustained burns to 40 per cent of his body, suffered facial and head injuries as well as a fractured elbow and spent 26 days in Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Tepania, who pleaded guilty to ‘recklessly cause grievous bodily harm’ and ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’, will front a sentencing hearing in October.

Magistrate Stephen Corry showed little sympathy towards the man when he faced Penrith Local Court for sentence and insisted the second offence was a lie.

“It never actually happened, I just pleaded guilty to it to get it over and done with... and now it’s dragging on and on,” he said.

Magistrate Corry said he needed to give priority to his supervision and not his work commitments to address his anger issues.

He was also hit with a 12-month Section 9 good behaviour bond for assaulting his wife and another for breaching his AVO. “If you commit any other offences in the next seven months, you know what’s facing you,” Magistrate Corry warned.

Man stays behind bars over murder of fellow inmate

Drinking session could have ended in tragedy

A prisoner accused of murdering an inmate at a local jail will stay behind bars for now after he declined to apply for release.

Abraham Ryan Tangi, 29, faced Penrith Local Court via video link last Thursday following investigations into the death of Zaydoun Al-Qaseer at Berkshire Park in June.

Just after 2.30pm on Monday, June 19, police were called to The Northern Road correctional centre after the 24-year-old was found critically injured.

He sustained serious head injuries and did not regain consciousness before dying in a Sydney hospital on June 30.

Tangi, whose address was listed as Silverwater Jail, did not apply for bail.

His matter was stood over to September 15 for reply.

Man pleads guilty to assault but claims he’s innocent

A man who consumed dozens of beers on a weekend drinking binge has expressed remorse for getting behind the wheel.

Mark Andrew Crellin narrowly dodged jail time when he fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after he was nabbed ‘high-range drink driving’ and ‘driving while cancelled’.

“I’m very, very sorry... I take full responsibility for my actions, it was very stupid of me,” he said.

The court heard Crellin became homeless in June last year and “hit the bottle pretty hard”.

On the weekend in question, he consumed 20 cans of VB on Saturday and 12 to 15 beers on Sunday, before being pulled over on Monday morning.

“I was a tow truck driver for 12 years in the Penrith area, I know what drink driving can do,” he said.

“I’ve sold my motor vehicle, now I’m on a push bike.”

Magistrate Stephen Corry said the facts

were “serious” and there was no doubt Crellin was a danger to the public from the “enormous” amount of alcohol he consumed.

He was handed a seven-month suspended sentence and ordered to undertake drug and alcohol counselling.

For the traffic matter, he was disqualified for three years and fined $500.

“Get into any trouble in the next seven months and it will trigger a jail sentence,” Magistrate Corry warned, noting being resistant to Community Corrections’ directions would have the same effect.

Magistrate angry at man convicted of domestic violence

A magistrate has slammed a man for perpetrating domestic violence in front of his child.

The court heard the man had gone from the home, but returned to continue arguing with his partner. “[Sir], you lost your temper so badly on this day – this wasn’t impulsive,” Magistrate Stephen Corry said.

“You had to think about maintaining your rage. In reality, none of this would have happened if you had hit the road and kept walking.”

He was convicted, handed a 12-month Section 9 bond with supervision for the assault charge, while he was convicted and fined $500 for previously failing to turn up to court.

Man to miss mother’s funeral

A man who offended while on bail will miss his mother’s funeral after a magistrate found the ‘show cause’ hurdle had not been overcome.

Despite already spending two months and two weeks in jail and his mother’s recent death, Magistrate Stephen Corry was not satisfied cause had been shown as to why James Keven Allen’s continued detention was not justified.

“Whilst it is unfortunate and tragic that his mother died... it has to be balanced with the protection of the [person in need

of protection] and the community,” he said.

“I don’t necessarily agree that he has served more time than he would – he has an extensive record for domestic violence offending.”

Penrith Local Court heard Allen was on bail when he was charged with ‘destroy/ damage property’.

His matter is listed for hearing on August 30.

Woman “skating on thin ice” despite house burning down

A woman who failed to engage with Community Corrections has been warned it’s up to her to make contact or risk time in the slammer.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told Stacey Coulson she was skating on thin ice after failing to comply with supervision attached to two suspended jail sentences.

“I have a report here indicating they have made a number of requests to you, both by telephone and correspondence,” he said when she indicated they had not been in touch.

Coulson claimed her house had burned down in the intervening period and she was not living there anymore.

“The onus is on you to keep in touch with Community Corrections... you’re sitting on two Section 12 bonds,” he said.

Her matter was adjourned to September 21 for an updated report.

Man urged to follow orders or face consequences

Blake McDonald has been given another chance to re-connect with Community Corrections after being called up for breaching his Section 9 bond.

Wearing white tennis shoes and matching red t-shirt and shorts, McDonald appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

Magistrate Stephen Corry reminded him that following Community Corrections’ directions was mandatory and suggested he do what they say and toe the line.

St Marys: Man charged after woman crashes car into house

A 23-year-old man has been arrested following an incident last week where a 21-year-old woman was allegedly followed, crashing her car into a residence.

The woman was being followed by the man in a second vehicle before she mounted the curb and crashed into the residence in Caines Crescent, St Marys.

Police are investigating the possibility this is a domestic violence related incident.

The man was charged with ‘Common assault (DV)’, ‘Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic)’ and ‘Drive furiously etc carriage/horse do/ cause bodily harm’.

He appeared in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, August 15.

Kingswood: Drunk man refuses to leave hotel

A 22-year-old man has been arrested after he smashed a door and assaulted the security guard and manager of a hotel in Kingswood.

On Saturday, August 12 at about 12.20am, police were called to a hotel in Kingswood, where they located the 22-year-old man.

It is alleged the man had attended the hotel, well under the influence of alcohol, where he was asked to leave by security on site.

He refused, and abused the security guard, resulting in the manager having a conversation with the man.

It is alleged the man had punched and kicked the door at the location, causing it to smash, and then assaulted both the security guard and manager.

Police arrested the man who was charged with ‘Excluded person fail to leave premises when required’, ‘Destroy or damage property’, ‘Common assault x 2’ and ‘Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm’.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, September 4.

Penrith: Man banned from Red Cow picks fight with security

A man who was already barred from the Red Cow Hotel has tried his luck at getting back in, only to find himself arrested to face court following an assault.

At 9pm on Saturday, August 12, an 18-year-old from Harris Park was approached by security who reminded him that he was barred from the premises and had to leave immediately.

The male continued to finish his beer disregarding the request to leave, so security removed the glass from the male and escorted him from the premises.

Outside, the male became aggressive, kicking and spitting at the metal door.

Security walked away from the male, who they then noticed trying to hang around the premises trying to fight other patrons.

When security investigated, the male ran towards them, spat on them, and then ran away.

Police saw the male running in the middle of Henry Street, who upon seeing the officers attempted to run from them.

He was arrested and charged with ‘Common assault’ and ‘Enter inclosed land not prescribed without lawful excuse’.

He is set to appear in court on Monday, September 11.

Silverdale: 16 cats found dead in bushland

St Marys Police and the RSPCA are investigating the discovery of the bodies of 16 cats that were found in bushland at the rear of an industrial complex in Econo place, Silverdale last week.

On Thursday, August 10, a rescue group discovered the bodies, in varying stages of decomposition, in bushland at the location.

Post mortem examinations conducted on some of the bodies indicated those cats had been drowned.

Police have been told the cats were living in bushland, and none appear to have been micro-chipped.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce may be a dual citizen.

Whilst the majority of regular Australians probably don’t care about such an innocuous detail, this fact shapes as an enormous issue for the Government as it may disqualify Joyce from being a member of the House of Representatives.

If this were to occur, the Government would lose its one-seat majority and effectively its ability to govern the country.

Section 44 of the Australian Constitution sets out that any person who is a dual citizen “shall be incapable of being chosen…as a member of the House of Representatives”.

The intention of this provision is clear; people whose allegiances may be with another nation should not be allowed to serve as a member of parliament and have control over Australian laws and policy.

However, the Constitution was drafted at a time when globalisation and multiculturalism were essentially unheard of, and nations were still vigorously fighting for territory and sovereignty the world across.

Since that time, our concept of what it is to be “Australian” has changed significantly, as is evidenced by the number of people who currently sit in parliament from a range of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

The situation with Joyce should serve as an opportunity to identify a shortcoming within our Constitution

that fails to consider the ever-changing context of Australian society.

Whether you love him or hate him, Joyce was born in Tamworth, raised in his seat of New England, and has never in any way, shape or form acknowledged any potential citizenship of New Zealand.

If he is a Kiwi, it is by default and has had zero practical implications on his life or his political career.

This should also be considered in the context of a range of international laws and treaties that, to some degree, see Australia and New Zealand as an extension of each other in terms of the bilateral freedoms our nation grants to each other’s citizens given our proximity to each other.

The matter has been referred to the High Court for determination, however if Joyce is expelled from the parliament, this should not be lauded as a victory for those who oppose the current Government.

If the Government were to lose its majority, it would come on the back of Gillard knifing Rudd, Rudd knifing Gillard and Turnbull knifing Abbott serving only to add fuel to the fire that is arguably the most tumultuous and ineffective decade in Australian political history.

However juicy the headline, this can’t be good for the country, no matter your political persuasion.

man has been rescued and a house in North St Marys was destroyed following a suspicious fire last Thursday morning.

At about 8.45am on August 10, emergency services were called to Magnolia Street, where they found a home well alight.

A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW said four crews attended the residence where they rescued a person from the burning building.

“There was an ambulance in attend-

ance and an adult was treated at the scene,” the spokesperson said.

While firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, the home was destroyed.

The occupant, a 39-year-old man, was removed from the home and treated for burns and smoke inhalation before being taken to Nepean Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A neighbour said it was lucky it didn’t spread to nearby properties.

“I didn’t even know there was a fire until someone came and banged on the door,” the neighbour said.

“I couldn’t smell anything.”

Investigations are continuing.

Locals prepare for winter bill shock Strong demand for assistance vouchers as Penrith residents struggle with rising electricity costs EMILY NEWTON

his winter will be remembered as a costly season for Penrith residents following an energy price rise on July 1 coupled with consistent cold nights.

A survey commissioned by iSelect shows that 86 per cent of NSW households are concerned about their upcoming electricity bill, and Penrith locals are struggling with the rising costs according to spokesperson Laura Crowden.

“Our latest research shows that more NSW households are worried about their energy bill this winter than last year, no doubt partly due to the latest price hikes in July which will see customers in NSW paying up to 17 per cent more,” she said.

“Although reducing your energy use or finding ways to cut back on other costs can make it easier to manage your energy bills, for many Penrith households it may just be a band-aid solution.”

The survey revealed that almost 50 per cent of households are dining out less to budget for their energy costs, and almost 24 per cent may be cutting back on groceries to pay their bills.

The EAPA Scheme operates through a voucher system, each worth $50, to help people experiencing a short-term financial crisis or emergency to pay their energy bill.

The Penrith – Nepean area is St Vincent de Paul Society’s highest area for voucher usage in the state, with $43,300 in vouchers already handed out since July 1.

In the first quarter of the 2016-17 financial year, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW gave

out a total of $23,300 in assistance vouchers. This means that in about one month, double the vouchers of the previous year’s three month period have been used.

“Vinnies is the largest provider of the NSW Government vouchers and data collected from our members and staff distributing EAPA vouchers paints a shocking picture,” St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO, Jack de Groot said.

“This is a significant increase with more given out in emergency relief in one month than the whole of winter last year.”

Labor seeks local input on national employment plan Just shy of 30 community members attended the Australian Jobs Taskforce Western Sydney Forum in St Marys last week, expressing their dissatisfaction with the lack of meaningful employment in the area.

Hosted by Member for Lindsay Emma Husar and joined by Chair and Secretary of the Australian Jobs Taskforce, Susan

Lamb, Member for Longman and Justine Keay, Member for Braddon, locals shared their stories about current and future jobs needs, challenges and possibilities.

The findings of the discussion will be used to help devise a national employment plan by Labor.

54-year-old Mark Phillips was an Aboriginal youth worker who decided to up-skill,

giving up his job to go university, but it is not earning him more money.

“I’m finding that currently employees are just offering jobs at the wages I was getting four years ago, or maybe just 50 cents more than I was getting before,” he said.

“And now I’ve got a HECS debt. It’s just not fair.”

Persistence may have saved Amy’s life EMILY NEWTON

hen 24-year-old Amy Flack from Jamisontown thought something was wrong with her health, she refused to take ‘no’ for an answer.

Her intuition paid off as she now prepares for brain surgery after being diagnosed with an 11mm pineal cyst in the centre of her brain.

“My symptoms only started occurring in June last year, before that I was 100 per cent normal,” she said.

“I went to several different doctors, and they just said ‘you must be stressed’.

“It was extremely frustrating because when you know something is wrong with your body, you just know.”

She recalls feeling upset as her symptoms of vertigo and continuous headaches were dismissed.

A few weeks passed and Ms Flack knew there was more to it, so she returned to her doctor and told them she wanted an MRI. Her cyst was then found.

“I knew my body very well, and I didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” Ms Flack said.

“As soon as I saw that I had a cyst in my brain, I immediately went to a neurologist.”

Ms Flack became emotional recounting when she was told to wait 12 months

because her cyst was asymptomatic despite what she described as the exhausting feeling of blood constantly rushing to head.

“I knew that wasn’t true. The only reason I was there was because I had symptoms,” she said through tears.

“All I was asking for was someone just to believe me.

“Even some of my family just kept saying, ‘you must be stressed’.”

Her relief came in the form of renowned brain surgeon Dr Charlie Teo who, unlike her past doctors, actually believed her.

“He sat me down and said that he believes me, and he wants to take it out of me,” Ms Flack said.

“Since meeting with him, my symptoms are getting worse, my memory is getting worse. Sometimes I’ll start to stutter.”

Later this month, on August 28, Ms Flack will finally have the cyst removed from her brain and begin her long road to full recovery.

Ms Flack is now appealing to everyone, especially young women, to speak up if they feel something is wrong with their health.

“Whenever I hear someone saying they have headaches, migraines, I think what’s behind the migraine,” she said.

Bloody battle still a bitter memory Horrors of war never leave them: Locals to reflect on the past as Vietnam Veterans Day is recognised EMILY NEWTON

he years pass, but the memories rarely fade for those who experienced the bloody realities of war.

Locals will pay their respects to those who served in the Vietnam War on Vietnam Veterans Day today, August 18.

The date marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, which took place 51 years ago today.

In re-purposed train carriages at the St Marys Vietnam Veterans’ Outpost, war veterans come together in support and solidarity.

They remember the Vietnam War and how it changed their lives.

“You’ve always got to reflect,” President Tony Mullavey said.

“I was with one or two people when they were killed in action, and it means a whole lot to us. It was a long time ago, and we were only there for a short time, but in 1967, which is 50 years ago, we lost 85 Australians killed in Vietnam, and I think 1,900 wounded in action.”

The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th century as almost 60,000 Australians fought in the war and more than 500 lost their lives.

Photo: Melinda Jane Mr Mullavey said he remembers some of his time “vividly”, which lead him to seek help for post traumatic stress disorder 20 years ago.

“Some things I am glad I have forgotten,” he said.

“But they will always gnaw you at the back of the head. You will often see a lot of these vets are very fidgety, especially those that were in the infantry.”

Michael Powers, who frequents the St Marys Outpost, is an American citizen

who was called to serve for Australia 10 years after his family moved to Sydney.

With an Australian mother, he joked that both countries wanted him to serve, but Australia got in first.

“I just got a letter to report to Bankstown Hospital for a medical,” he laughed.

He remembers the Vietnam War with a confliction that many veterans would understand.

“I wouldn’t have wished it upon my worst enemy, but wouldn’t have missed it for quids,” he said.

While the Outpost services Vietnam veterans, it is open to anyone who has served and provides support to families and friends of those touched by war.

“We’re all the same here. Anyone that wants to come in here can, and though 90 per cent of them are Vietnam veterans, we’re getting a nibbling of younger veterans,” Mr Mullavey said.

“Even though our conflict was 50 years ago... they have the same problems, probably even a little worse than what we had.

“Here, people get their peace.”

With the motto ‘honour the dead, fight like hell for the living’, the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia dedicates itself to caring for returned soldiers of all generations and their families.

truck has left a trail of devastation and debris along the Great Western Highway, destroying a parked car and crashing into the side of a house last week.

Around 12.30am on Thursday, August 10, police were called to the Great Western Highway, Kingswood, where a truck carrying an excavator had crashed into a house.

The driver of the truck fled the scene.

Inspector Branko Kubecka from St Marys Local Area Command said police are still looking for the person responsible.

“The vehicle collided with another parked car... and ended up coming to rest in the front of the premises,” Insp Kubecka said.

“The parked car was unattended at the time, it was basically dragged along about 30 odd metres and ended up coming to rest on the footpath.

“The premises [the truck] eventually collided with, there was no one inside so that was fortunate as well.

“Based on the carnage and the debris left, I’d say [the driver] would have sustained injuries enough to probably require hospitalisation or at least medical treatment.”

The truck dragged this parked car about 30 metres, completely destroying it.

Insp Kubecka said it is “very lucky” that no one aside from the driver was injured.

The truck and excavator involved in the incident was reported stolen from a Mt Pritchard retail premises at about 6.15am on Tuesday, August 8.

Police are currently following a number of leads and have urged the driver to come forward while inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced.

The pair aim to lead by example and encourage the local community to get active by using a friend or colleague to help encourage them along the way.

“It doesn’t actually matter where you’re starting from,” Ms Husar said.

“We’re all going to start from different points and different positions, but the most important thing is that you start somewhere.”

Mr Willmington said now that he’s in his 50s, he is thinking more about his longterm health.

“I’ve recently lost my mum and all of a sudden you have a think about your life and where you want to be,” he said.

Heartbreaking moment inspires Nicki’s new hit EMILY NEWTON

eleasing her first single in five years, renowned local performer Nicki Gillis has returned with a bang as she climbs the UK music charts.

Her single, ‘In The Daylight’, has entered the Hotdisc chart in England at number 14.

Ms Gillis is proud of the achievement and thrilled that people are enjoying the new track.

“For it to go straight into the charts first week of release, especially the top 20, is amazing,” Ms Gillis gushed.

“I got welcome back messages from a lot of the DJs. I wasn’t expecting it.”

Through September, Ms Gillis is set to return to the UK for her ninth tour.

“I have some really amazing fans, incredible fans in the UK,” she said.

“There’s a lot of songs to still record, and that’s what I love doing. I love writing, I love recording and I love performing. I’ve been really lucky to be able to spend most of my life doing that.”

Her biggest joy is the “indescribable” moment when someone sings her lyrics back to her.

“The first time it happened, I was just about in tears,” Ms Gillis said.

“You write songs, you put them out there and you hope people will love them.

“Most of my songs that I have written are about my own life or my friends, so to then have that connection is incredible.

It’s really surreal.”

The lyrics to her new single came almost effortlessly as Ms Gillis found inspiration when her best friend was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

“She’s the strongest person I know,” Ms Gillis said.

“The day she was diagnosed we went back to her house, had cheese, biscuits and wine and thought ‘stuff the world’ and I looked down and there was a hole in my shoe.”

That moment became the opening line to her song that embraces the idea that “life is hectic”.

“A lot of people can relate to it, it’s a very familiar story,” Ms Gillis said.

With a love of performing covers as well as her own material, Ms Gillis will bring to life Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’ album at the Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, October 28.

With many songs written over the last few years, the best is yet to come from Ms Gillis.

“For my own stuff, 2018 – watch this space,” she said.

Young Innovators Penrith City Council is about to launch a bold new initiative to attract the brightest young minds in Penrith to put their thinking caps on and come up with innovative ideas that can create social change and a more sustainable future.

Replacing the popular Youth Mayor program this year, I saw the idea of attracting our best young minds as a great opportunity to link this new program with Council’s highly successful Penrith Talks: Innovation series that commenced earlier this year.

Local high school students from years 9-12 will be given the opportunity to tell us their innovative idea, concept or design in the areas of design and technology, arts and humanities, science, mathematics and education and business and leadership/social engagement.

The three best entries will be recognised at the next Penrith Talks: Innovation event on October 18 at the Joan

Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Each of the three winners will be recognised at the event and the entry I judge as the best will also be presented with a cheque for $500. As an added bonus, the three winners will each get the unique opportunity to meet and have a chat with one of the event’s key note speakers, Jay Manley, Engineering Projects Manager at Tesla.

Jay, a former engineering student at Western Sydney University now works for Tesla Inc, in San Francisco, one of the most innovative sustainable energy companies in the world and renowned for designing and manufacturing electric cars.

TURNING BACK TIME

D

espite a high turnover of owners since its beginning around 1860, the Australian Arms Hotel has been an icon in Penrith, where people would gather, see friends and have a drink.

And even today, in 2017, it remains one of the most recognisable and popular hotels in Penrith.

Since the early 1800s, the first inns in the Penrith district provided an important service to convicts, soldiers and settlers who worked hard and relieved their dreariness with alcohol.

During this time, travelling was slow, and local hotels and inns would provide news and information to people who could travel no more than 30 kilometres a day.

By 1825, licensees were required to provide accommodation to travellers, and by 1830 legally had to keep an oil lamp burning outside from sundown to sunrise.

However, the most important service of hotels and inns was the sale of liquor.

After World War II, Penrith grew quickly.

Hotels in the area grew not only in size, but in numbers, and with that came the Australian Arms Hotel.

There is speculation that the site close to the corner on Castlereagh Street North (Lawson Street) and High Street, Penrith, was first occupied by a man by the name of Hogan.

As early as 1860, Hogan ran a business on the site, then left the area to prospect for gold.

A man named Thomas Andrews then opened a butcher shop in High Street and opened a hotel, also known as a public house, beside it on the corner.

The first Australian Arms Hotel building before being demolished in 1940. Exact date unknown. Photo: Penrith City Library It is suggested Mr Andrews saw the profitability in a public house, and became the first licensee of the Australian Arms Hotel.

Mr Andrews owned and operated the hotel for almost 20 years before passing away, ironically from liver congestion.

From then, his wife Harriet Andrews kept ownership of the hotel and by the late 1890s it was so popular, Mrs Andrews facilitated the construction of a whole new building on the site.

At the time, a woman was allowed to be licensee of a hotel, but she had to have a man manage the bar.

However, Mrs Andrews’ health also began to deteriorate, and after suffering a severe case of gangrene, she passed away in 1901.

In the last two years of her life, Mrs Andrews had a man named Percy Hallett lease the hotel, who at the time advertised it as ‘accommodation with civility and attention’.

After Mrs Andrews’ death, the new owner, Mr A Roberts, and new licensee Mr Aughey, had the hotel thoroughly renovated and refitted in 1908.

In the 15 years between 1912 and 1927, the hotel changed licensees six times, with several licensees only running the hotel for around a year each.

During this time between 1919 and 1955, hotels had to close at 6pm, and only genuine travellers from at least 50 kilometres outside the area were allowed to be drinking in the hotel after that time.

However, this law benefited Penrith, which was situated the perfect distance from Sydney city for drinkers who wanted a night out, and the Australian Arms Hotel continued to prosper.

After 1927, the hotel had many owners before Frances Fulton purchased it in 1939.

Upon purchasing, the ‘Licensing Board’ demanded that Mrs Fulton completely pull down the hotel that was in disrepair

and rebuild from scratch. At the time, the hotel had seven bedrooms, with no hot water and no shower cubicles.

One wall was damp, several rooms’ floors were decayed and dust was rampant through the wooden ceilings.

Mrs Fulton reluctantly had the premises rebuilt, and continued to trade until 1960 when she sold it to Tooheys Pty Ltd. In 2002, the hotel was taken over by a syndicate between Anne and Jan Quinn, Ricky and Kaylie Stuart and Vicky Creary.

Now under new ownership, the Australian Arms Hotel is still serving its community the same way it did when it first opened.

It still offers a place where friends can gather and have a drink in the cool, to escape Penrith’s heat after a long hot day of work in the summer sun.

It has also emerged as a popular place for a drink and a bite to eat for Penrith’s business community.

ast week I was in the process of terminating a contract with a company. The company with which I was terminating had been unreliable and on one occasion, unethical.

Upon hearing who I was transferring to, they sent me an email stating, “We are currently in the process of regaining multiple contracts from people who transferred to XYZ company earlier in the year, so I will make a note to give you a call in two months’ time and see if you are ready to come back to us”.

I was gob smacked! And I quickly replied: “I’d really prefer you didn’t call me in two months’ time. I am never impressed when people talk negatively about their competitors. I find it reflects more poorly on the person talking than the business in question”.

There are definitely going to be times when a carefully worded warning concerning a FACTUAL issue may be warranted.

‘surprises’ customers with half way through building. Sure enough, some friends were stung with exactly this scenario soon after we heard this warning, so we knew it was legitimate.

But even that concern was delivered in a fair manner (that is, they didn’t cast generalised, negative dispersions on the company in question).

A number of times I have experienced awkward situations when meeting new clients, who have sought my services because they are unhappy with a competitor (a competitor who I know has spoken negatively about me).

And although it can be difficult to find the right words, my replies are never directed at this competitor. I work hard to redirect the conversation to “the way that I do XYZ is this…”, making no mention of the other business.

My philosophy is that actions speak louder than words. I can tell everyone that I am the best, and better than all my competitors. But if the way I build up my business is to tear others’ down, my negativity will soon catch up with me, and my badmouthing will lead to no good.

Do you have a price that is never discounted for instance?

Do you always loss lead in that particular item, to bring in higher value business?

Promotional activities Depending on whether you are targeting consumers (B2C) or businesses (B2B), will impact where you focus your efforts.

Consumer activities may include markets, school fetes, pop up shops, however, you may also target other businesses that deal with your target consumers as referral partners.

Business activities typically revolve around networking but also expos, affiliate/referral programmes, industry associations, speaking and holding workshops. Get out there!

CODES COLLIDE » It was a case of codes colliding at the

Panthers Rugby League Academy on Monday morning when new Wallabies captain Michael Hooper along with coach Michael Cheika visited the local facility for a special tour and media opportunity.

Panthers captain Matt Moylan and coach Anthony Griffin were also in attendance as the pair showed the Wallabies’ brass around the multi-million dollar facility.

Both Moylan and Hooper exchanged each other’s jerseys while Griffin and Cheika swapped tactics ahead of their sides’ crucial clashes this weekend. Earlier this week, the Wallabies called Penrith home, staying at the Mercure Hotel at Panthers and training at Pepper Stadium. They will take on the New Zealand All Blacks this Saturday night at ANZ Stadium in the opening game of the Bledisloe Cup. Judging by the smiles on their faces, the Wallabies were very impressed with what the Panthers Academy had to offer.

» Penrith deviated from normal proce-

dure last Friday by not holding a gameeve press conference with coach Anthony Griffin. Instead, in a bizarre move, the Panthers recorded their own question and answer session with Griffin and posted it on their website. It’s the first time we can recall Griffin not holding a press conference prior to a game. AAP reporter Steve Zemek claimed the pre-match ritual was cancelled under Phil Gould’s orders (something we’ve also heard from other sources), and was in breach of NRL media guidelines. It was certainly strange – such pre-game press conferences are usually about promoting the game ahead and getting bums on seats, something you’d presume Penrith would have been keen on doing for their second last home game of the season. Hopefully it’s not a sign of things to come in the way the club handles the media and its obligations.

» Former Panther Chris Grevsmuhl has

been released by the Gold Coast Titans, and the troubled forward would be at long odds to ever play in the NRL again.

Controversy is currently surrounding

Grevsmuhl with some fans claiming he is involved in selling signed jerseys online, many of which never arrive. It would seem his problems have followed him from Penrith to the Gold Coast with similar rumours surrounding his sudden departure from the Panthers last year.

The story has been kept behind closed doors for some time but plenty of people who claim they have been scammed are now coming forward publicly via social media.

» Could Pepper Stadium be facing a

re-name at some point in the future? The non-bank lender has agreed to a $657 million takeover from US private equity giant KKR. Pepper may well continue its current branding in Australia with no change in direction officially announced following the takeover news. Watch this space!

» Rookie Panthers backrower Corey

Harawira-Naera said he’d love to achieve a childhood dream and represent New Zealand at the upcoming Rugby League World Cup. The 22-year-old has been in outstanding form since making his NRL debut earlier this year and would be a terrific addition to the Kiwis World Cup squad. Speaking with Extra Time, the talented backrower said while it is a long shot, he’d love to be considered. “I grew up watching the Kiwis and All Blacks doing the Haka, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “If I get the chance I wouldn’t say ‘no’. Hopefully I can look after my body and get the opportunity at the end of the year.”

have given the green light to an initiative that will allow Penrith to field teams in the Western Region championships in what could be the first step towards fielding a Panthers-branded Intrust Super Premiership side in the region by 2022.

The commitment is building on Penrith’s strong links with the region, which includes a long-term deal to take a match to Bathurst each season.

I

t is the rugby league storyline nobody thought possible two months ago.

Believe it or not, the Penrith Panthers are within striking distance of the top four and despite taking the long road to the Finals, could well finish where many experts predicted in the pre-season.

But with an “anything could happen” scenario surrounding the top eight, this will be a battle to the very end.

The road ahead is tough, with Penrith’s final three games all against clubs who are fighting for a spot in the Finals, starting with the rejuvenated Canberra Raiders in the nation’s capital this Sunday.

Sitting in 10th spot and four points out

of the eight, Canberra seem the most unlikely side to play Finals footy out of those battling for a spot, but with the Sea Eagles, Cowboys and Dragons all looking shaky, there is a chance for Ricky Stuart’s men to make a stunning late charge.

The Raiders can’t afford to drop a single game and there is little doubt they’ll be switched on for Sunday’s match against a side that somehow stole victory from them back in round 14 in Bathurst. Revenge will surely be on their minds this Sunday given how important that remarkable collapse in the final minutes could end up being in the context of their season.

Canberra has looked a more relaxed team since the experts wrote them off a month ago, and have cruised to victories over the Warriors, Sharks and Rabbitohs in the past three weeks, playing the kind of football we expected to see in the first half of the season.

Jarrod Croker and Nick Cotric are forming a formidable partnership on Canberra’s left hand side and it does pose a potential worry this weekend with Waqa Blake and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak needing to nullify that potent attack. The duo all but put the Warriors out of the game last Sunday when they combined to score the first two tries, opening up a 12-0 lead after 17 minutes.

For Penrith, last Saturday’s game against the Cowboys followed a familiar path.

Nothing spectacular, but enough.

Without playing their best footy, the Panthers have won six straight and are on the verge of announcing themselves as a legitimate premiership dark horse.

That announcement could well come if they manage to down the Raiders on their home turf this Sunday afternoon, setting up a blockbuster final home game of the season against the Dragons next weekend.

Matt Moylan’s return last weekend was a little shaky and Penrith still have an issue with last tackle plays, which they could be punished for on Sunday – the Raiders love broken play and any seven tackle sets handed to them could be fatal to Penrith.

Penrith will be without Peter Wallace, who has suffered a hand injury, but could be boosted by the late inclusion of Trent Merrin if he passes a fitness test.

The Panthers will win this game up the middle but they’ll lose it out wide. Cotric, Croker, Joseph Leilua and Jordan Rapana pose a true danger and it’s Penrith’s defence that will ultimately decide the match.

There is no question that this is Penrith’s toughest task of the past two months and both sides come into the contest with form and confidence. I’m expecting it to be a high scoring nail biter.

opular Panthers winger Josh Mansour admits Penrith’s semi final loss to Canberra last year still stings and he’s eager to get some sweet revenge this weekend.

The Raiders were responsible for ending Penrith’s 2016 premiership campaign with a 22-12 win during week two of last year’s playoffs.

However, less than 12 months later, the tables have turned and it’s now Penrith’s chance to end Canberra’s slim top eight hopes this Sunday afternoon at GIO Stadium.

After getting the chocolates in miracle fashion over the Raiders in Bathurst back in June, Mansour believes there’s a real rivalry brewing between the 1990 and 1991 Grand Final opponents.

“I think there is a rivalry growing with Canberra – it’s always a tough match-up with them especially with Jordan Rapana and Joey Leilua on my edge,” he said.

“I’ll be looking forward to the contest but it won’t be an easy job. The Raiders are fighting for a Finals spot like us and, down in Canberra, it’s going to be tough.”

The Panthers haven’t won in the nation’s capital since 2014 but their semi final loss last year is the defeat that hurts the most.

Mansour said he hopes his teammates remember what happened on that cold night last September and get some revenge.

“I think we should remind ourselves of that game,” he told Extra Time.

“Last year when we lost to Canberra we all left disappointed because it knocked us out.

“Bringing that feeling back and hopefully working and pushing ourselves harder to get the win will be good.”

Since returning from an ACL injury

midway through the year, Mansour enjoyed one of his better performances of the season against North Queensland last weekend.

Not only did he score a great individual try under the posts, he also made amends for Penrith’s last minute loss to the Cowboys back in Round 16.

“I had this game penned down, I really wanted to make up for that game in Townsville – it left a bitter taste in my mouth,” Mansour admitted.

“It was definitely good to get over the line… you don’t get many wingers scoring

under the posts but the gates just opened up and I went straight through.”

While Mansour admits last Saturday’s victory was important for Penrith’s Finals hopes, there’s still plenty of improvement to be made both personally and from a team perspective.

“I feel very good at this point in time, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but each week I keep improving myself as a player,” he said.

“We all just have to keep on bettering ourselves each week. We still have loads of improvement in us.”

s they eye off back to back Finals appearances for the first time in 13 years, Panthers captain Matt Moylan believes 19-year-old halfback Nathan Cleary is the man to lead Penrith to the post-season and beyond.

Cleary enjoyed another standout performance during last weekend’s win over a brave and busted North Queensland outfit – scoring a double, kicking four from four and saving a near certain try by hulking Cowboys forward Coen Hess.

According to teammate Corey HarawiraNaera, Cleary’s try saver on the Queensland Origin star midway through the second half was the turning point for the Panthers.

“I think Nathan’s try saving tackle on Coen Hess was one of the biggest plays of the game,” the rookie backrower told Extra Time.

“It typified our side’s attitude that we were going to punch through their line

and save as many tries as we could.”

Cleary has been the subject of recent reports that club bosses are eager to ink the talented teenager to a new five-year deal, which will see him become the face of Penrith well into the future.

While Cleary has remained tightlipped about his future beyond 2019 when his current deal expires, Harawira-Naera believes the youngster deserves everything that comes his way.

“It’s pretty cool to see him in talks for an extension already,” he said.

“Nath’s earned it and I’m really happy for him.”

Penrith skipper Matt Moylan agreed, revealing Cleary as one of the hardest working players at the club.

“Nathan’s going really well and I think it’s a credit to him and how he trains,” Moylan told Extra Time.

“He is always one of the last blokes off the field and he’s always out here working on whatever he thinks he needs to. He’s reaping the rewards for that now.”

After a stellar second year in first grade, Cleary is just eight points shy of becoming the youngest player in NRL history to record 200 points in a season.

Three coaches who have defined the 2017 season

was playing my best footy when my coaches connected with me on more than a just a football level. My top three NRL coaches for 2017, I believe, get the best out of their squad because of that very reason.

The three coaches I’ve chosen have done the best this year not because of their win/loss record but because they’ve got the most out of their squad purely on understanding their players, man management and putting a system in place where everyone knows their role.

Craig Bellamy – Melbourne (pictured) There’s no better coach in the game at getting the best out of his players than Craig Bellamy. Yes Melbourne have built a culture down there around three of the best of all time but it’s the way Craig is able to get the most out of his fringe first grade players and up and comers each week that’s the most impressive.

You look at Suliasi Vunivalu, Josh AddoCarr and all their other fringe first graders that no one had heard of, or could get a run elsewhere – and they end up in Melbourne playing their best football. That’s all down to Craig Bellamy and the structures he has in place.

Trent Barrett – Manly Sea Eagles At the start of the year, many people wouldn’t have had Manly in their top eight predictions but despite being $2 million under the cap, the Sea Eagles are right in the mix to play Finals footy.

I put this success down to their coach Trent Barrett and how he’s managed to simplify the game plan where they almost play like the Melbourne Storm.

Blake Green steers the team around like Cooper Cronk and Daly Cherry-Evans is like Cameron Munster. Plus Barrett’s also been able to turn the careers around of many players who would have been rejects at their former clubs, much like what Bellamy has done at the Storm.

Barrett’s somehow, some way got these players all competing for one another this year, and Manly are set to have a serious football team for many years to come.

Trent Robinson – Sydney Roosters Every fan will say that their club is under the most pressure each year to make the Finals but, after what the Roosters went through last year, there was no coach in the competition that would have demanded more of himself than Trent Robinson.

The way Trent’s managed to revitalise

this group of players is unbelievable.

Mitchell Pearce is back to his best, Michael Gordon has wound back the clock and Latrell Mitchell is playing terrific at centre.

Battle in nation’s capital will be the game of the round

I

’m absolutely pumped to be calling this Sunday afternoon’s blockbuster clash between the Penrith Panthers and Canberra Raiders at GIO Stadium live and exclusive on FOX League.

If you remember the classic these two teams dished up in June, I wrote in this column back then how that game could be the turning point in Penrith’s season. And if you flip that result around and have a four point turnaround with two points for Canberra and minus two points for Penrith, these two teams would be level on premiership points heading into this round.

It really puts in perspective how big that June 10 result in Bathurst really was for the Panthers.

Whether you’ve got FOX League at home or you have to watch it at a pub at 2pm this Sunday, you can’t miss what’s set to be the game of the round.

The rivalry between the Panthers and Raiders is immense and dates back decades.

Who can forget last year’s Finals series when the Raiders sent Penrith packing, and then more recently in Bathurst when Joseph Tapine and Corey Harawira-Naera

went toe to toe on the stroke of half-time.

Both were sent to the bin.

The Raiders are in fine form of late and what I believe has changed for them in recent weeks is Elliott Whitehead’s under the radar move into the middle after switching from that right edge with Joey Leilua and Jordan Rapana.

Whitehead’s now playing up the middle and Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has thrown Tapine into that edge role. I think Whitehead has grown an extra leg courtesy of this move and that will be another player that Penrith will have to be wary of come this Sunday.

For the Panthers, rookie Harawira-Naera has been another player that’s flown under the radar in recent weeks.

Each and every week he seems to be making the highlight reel and, of course, he was the one that scored that crucial try in Bathurst which sparked that almighty comeback with two minutes to go.

While this Sunday’s game isn’t a mustwin for Penrith like it is for Canberra, I think a victory will really propel the Panthers right into the premiership

enrith made the Finals in 2010 but despite finishing second, fell out of the premiership race quickly, losing in both week one and week two.

It was the first and only time the Panthers had made the Finals under coach Matt Elliott, and Penrith had finished the regular season in second position. Hopes were high at the foot of the Mountains, with the final three regular season games resulting in big wins for Penrith – a 54-18 thrashing of Souths, a 24-18 win over the Bulldogs and a 50-12 defeat of Cronulla.

But Elliott’s inexperienced side found it tough in their opening Finals match, despite it being played at Penrith

Stadium in front of a vocal and large home crowd.

Penrith went into the game as favourites, and all eyes were on the halves combination of Travis Burns and Luke Walsh, who had combined to ensure Penrith scored plenty of tries in the 2010 season, many of them from kicks.

But the Raiders found something special, with captain Terry Campese producing a five-star performance to lead Canberra to a 24-22 win.

The win shocked the Penrith faithful, and the players, who were most likely expecting a weekend off the following week – something that would have been achieved if they’d defeated the seventh placed Raiders.

While the end result was disappointing, the match will be remembered for one of the great Finals tries, scored

by Panthers winger Sandor Earl. Earl produced a magical dive into the corner to score a try that got Penrith back into

the game, but his incredible acrobatic skills weren’t enough to save Penrith.

All of a sudden, Penrith was facing sudden death in week two of the Finals.

Their opponent was the Sydney Roosters, who the previous week had defeated the Wests Tigers 19-15 in an absolute thriller at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The Panthers were forced to make a range of positional changes prior to kickoff, and perhaps the death knell was sounded when it was confirmed that winger Adrian Purtell had been moved into the second row.

Michael Gordon moved to the wing to cover him, while a young Lachlan Coote played fullback.

The Panthers simply couldn’t compete, and ultimately went down 34-12 and were eliminated from the 2010 Finals series.

The Roosters would go on to play in the Grand Final, going down to the red hot St George-Illawarra Dragons.

i t h t o d a y ’s political c l i mate it’s not easy to m a k e l i g h t of controversial topics like religion and terrorism. But Akmal Saleh does just that in his stand-up comedy show where political correctness is thrown out the window.

Akmal, who was born in Egypt and immigrated to Australia when he was 11, uses the contrast between his Arab heritage and Australian life to create a hilarious act that makes him a successful Australian comedian.

Although he draws on sensitive topics, Akmal is aware that what’s acceptable and what’s not is constantly changing.

“Society changes really quickly these days – more than it used to. Times have changed, attitudes have changed,” Akmal said.

Akmal explained that the nature of the joke is what is important when deciding how far to push it.

“It’s all about the intent – whether what you say carries hatred or if it’s just there to make people laugh,” he said.

And make people laugh is exactly what

he does best. With appearances on a range of platforms including the Sydney Comedy Festival, a stint in radio and time on ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’, Akmal’s objective to make people laugh has been achieved time and time again.

“My only responsibility is to make the people laugh. I’m not a preacher, I’m not a politician or a social commentator – I’m a comedian first,” he said.

Although nowadays Akmal’s shows are filled with audiences who know and love his brand of comedy, he explains it wasn’t always like this.

“When you’re starting out you do pubs, really rough clubs and perform in front of drunks,” he said.

“It’s a really aggressive environment and you have to make the most of it and make people laugh very quickly or you’re dead.”

Such an aggressive environment is how Akmal’s freestyle brand of comedy was developed and his show thrives off quality audience participation.

“Someone said to me once ‘you’re only as good as your audience allows you to be’, it’s a real relationship,” Akmal said.

“With comedy, it’s completely dependent on the audience and how they react to you.”

Although he still gets the occasional drunk crowd, Akmal delivers laughs, which is what you can expect at his show in the Blue Mountains next month.

Akmal will be performing his comedy

show ‘Transparent’ at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub in Springwood on Friday, September 22 at 8pm. Tickets are $46.90.

Incredible cultural experience at The Joan in Penrith KATE REID

usic can be a truly unifying force and there’s few who understand this better than the Sydney World Music Chamber Orchestra.

t’s one of history’s most iconic diaries and now Anne Frank’s experiences during World War II are set to come to life on the local stage.

This September, Ruby Productions will present their version of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ at the John Lees Centre.

Based on the play written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, the production follows the true story of 13-year-old Anne Frank and the Frank family, who went into hiding in the attic of Otto Frank’s warehouse in Germanoccupied Amsterdam.

For two years the Franks, along with a

fellow Jewish family, lived in one room where Anne documented their existence as they tried to avoid persecution.

Sadly Anne, her mother and her sister all perished, but her father survived and went on to publish his daughter’s diary as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

This is a truly poignant and powerful story that everyone should experience.

Get lost in a musical journey at The Joan in September

et lost in a world of dreams when guest conductor Sarah Penicka-Smith joins the Penrith Symphony Orchestra (PSO) for a special evening performance at The Joan.

The ‘Classical Dreams’ program will feature a range of classical works that explore dream-like and transcendental beauty.

Audiences will be taken on a musical journey through Mendelssohn’s ‘Overture: A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Schumann’s ‘Cello Concerto’ and Mozart’s ‘Symphony No.41, Jupiter’.

Joining the PSO and guest conductor Sarah Penicka-Smith – who will be appearing with PSO for the first time – is cello soloist Waynne Kwon, who was a student at the Sydney Conservatorium before completing post-graduate study at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music.

Ê Disney has announced it will be pulling movies from Netflix and launching its own streaming service in 2019. It will follow an ESPN streaming service to launch with US sports early next year. Decisions on ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Marvel’ movies (which Disney owns) are yet to be made but the decision to not renew with Netflix is final. Ê Netflix has renewed ‘GLOW’ for a second season of 10 episodes.

One of the greatest sci-fi thriller franchises of all time returns to the small screen this week with the release of Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien: Covenant’.

This time round the colony ship Covenant, including crew members Daniels and Oram, are bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy.

While they believe the planet to be uncharted paradise, what they uncover is something much darker.

The crew find themselves in a battle for survival when they come in contact with a hostile alien life-form determined to destroy them.

Michael Fassbender also makes a return to the series as David.

‘Alien: Covenant’ does justice to its predecessors with a return to the terror, gore and thrills that made the original films so successful.

Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) is a West Virginia family man who teams up with his sister Mellie (Riley Keough) and his one-armed brother Clyde (Adam Driver) as they attempt to steal money from North Carolina’s Charlotte Motor Speedway.

To help them break into the track’s underground system they recruit demolition expert Joe Bang (Daniel Craig).

Unfortunately their plan is interrupted and they are forced to pull off the heist during a popular NASCAR race while a relentless FBI agent hunts them down.

Along with Tatum, Driver and Craig the star-studded cast also includes Katie Holmes, Seth McFarland and Hilary Swank.

At the helm is acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh, who is best known for his work on the ‘Oceans’ franchise.

Since hitting the screen the film has been raking in the critical acclaim, with movie review site Rotten Tomatoes praising ‘Logan Lucky’ for managing to get that often tricky balance of smart and fun just right.

‘Logan Lucky’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith in the Westfield complex.

The financial implications of moving into aged care Many of us will need to move into an aged care facility, but there’s a few financial challenges...

Australians are living longer so it is becoming more prevalent for people to enter an aged care facility in their later years.

For anyone who has been through this process, you’ll know that the aged care system is complicated. Furthermore, decisions around aged care also impact on Centrelink means testing. I would recommend seeking advice before commencing the process.

The first step is the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) evaluation. This can be performed by any health care professional who is a member of the ACAT. This is to determine the eligibility for care.

Once you are determined eligible the next step is finding a home. There is a government website myagedcared.gov. au that provides a list of all aged care facilities, their costs and a brief description of their rooms and services. This should assist in finding an appropriate facility.

The financial aspects of the aged care facility are where the complexity lies.

Upon entering an aged care facility there is an upfront accommodation payment.

This is referred to as the retirement bond. This payment is means tested, and in some cases only a contribution will be required, not the whole amount.

This retirement bond is refundable. In the event that you are assessed to pay a bond, but are not able to do so, you will be required to pay an ongoing daily payment. This payment is not refundable.

The ongoing cost has three components.

A basic daily fee, a means tested care fee and additional daily fee. The basic daily fee is the same for everyone and is currently $49.07 a day. The additional daily fee is for additional services and is to pay for benefits or small luxuries. A Foxtel subscription would be an example of an additional service. Some facilities have a suite of included services for a

set fee, others allow you to choose what additional benefits you would like and charge accordingly.

The means tested care fee is based on a combination of an income and asset test.

Unlike Centrelink, where the income and assets are tested separately with the lower result counting, the aged care means tests aggregates both the income and assets tests combining the assessment for each.

Further complicating the means test is the treatment of the family home; the home is not counted for means testing if an acceptable person is remaining in the home. Normally this is the spouse, but also includes carers and dependent children. The money used for the bond does not count for means testing.

Like women entering menopause, men embody their own version of physiological changes due to a variation in hormones. From the age of anywhere between 40 to 55 men will encounter a gradual decline in their testosterone levels.

This is a natural process and for some, there are no obvious symptoms as the process is gradual. For others, symptoms are inclusive of fat accumulating around the belly, mood disturbances, decreased libido and lack of energy.

This subtle and somewhat silent stage is referred to as andropause; a transition that seems to be less-known than menopause. And perhaps this is because menopause is, comparatively to andropause, a rapid change in hormones and thus symptoms are more obvious and therefore more recognised.

For men, puberty marks a swift increase of testosterone supporting muscle development and the formation of bone and liver function.

Therefore, the decline of testosterone during the andropause phase will affect

muscle strength, fragility and the ability to efficiently metabolise fat.

What’s more, is that a decline in testosterone causes a disruption in the ratio between testosterone and estrogen. Men, like women, have estrogen that facilitate roles within the body such as brain function, heart health and bone development.

The level of estrogen in men is of course generally much lower than women but as testosterone levels start to decline, estrogen levels will either remain the same or in some instances begin to rise. This then

Poor Midget came into the shelter as a stray but his owner knew he was there and simply did not want him back. Midget is one of my favourite cats as he’s a friendly and social boy that doesn’t seem to have issues with other cats.

When we have a car accident we know how important it is to be able find a good smash repairer.

But who fixes broken lives? Who fixes us when life takes a turn for the worst and we find ourselves struggling?

The Bible looks forward to a day when God will send someone who will speak these amazing words; “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

Looking at what this person will do would certainly leave people with a great sense of expectation!

At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry here on Earth, Jesus, standing before a crowd of stunned onlookers in the small town of Nazareth, says; “Today in your hearing these words have been fulfilled!”

As the New Testament unfolds, we see how this is exactly what Jesus did!

Jesus spoke of the good news of forgiveness and new life with God. Jesus did restore lives broken by struggle and heartache and disappointment. He proclaimed freedom from the struggle and penalty of

guilt and sin. He announced the release from darkness and fear of death. He brought the promise of blessing of friendship and a fresh start with God. Yes, it is great to know a good smash repairer, but how much better is it to know Jesus!

I have always loved reading. Books inspire us and can transport us from the mundane to the sublime.

It’s very difficult to moan the paper cuts of life whilst re-living Shackleton’s incredible journey of 1,300km of open ocean and the mountainous terrain of South Georgia in his bid to seek help for his stranded crew.

Today I would like to introduce two books that could change your outlook on life and lead to new and more rewarding experiences for your families.

Psycho-Cybernetics, written by Maxwell Maltz in 1960 explains how our subconscious mind creates the real you and determines the limitations that we place on ourselves.

Psycho-Cybernetics is the original text that defined the mind/body connection, the concept that paved the way for most of today’s personal empowerment programs.

This is one of the most read books in the English language. Master Coaching has based its philosophy on the tenets explained by Maltz.

The other is The Mismeasurement of Man by one of the truly great scientists of the last century, Dr Stephen Jay Gould.

Gould’s thesis exposes the fallacy of IQ measurement.

These two books support the philosophy of Master Coaching.

For your entertainment you may read Franck Facey’s A Fortunate Life and ponder the challenges that he overcame just living in Australia.

This was a popular text for the HSC in the 1980’s and Facey only learned to read after his 60th birthday.

More well known is Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, which outlines his metamorphose from radical to statesman after more than two decades of imprisonment on Rodden Island.

Next week we investigate the practical importance of these two books and how they have helped in the development of the ‘Art of Coaching’.

Encouraging our children to eat more greens Getting our kids to eat vegetables is no easy task, but there’s plenty of unique ways to ensure our children are getting the nutrition they need...

Ask any nutritionist, dietitian or health professional what they would love to change about the eating habits of Australians and increasing our vegetable intake is likely to be at the top of the list.

With vegetables containing many important vitamins and minerals it’s especially important for children and adolescents to be getting the recommended serves each day, but unfortunately less than one in 10 children and adolescents are meeting the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

As any parent will attest to it’s not always easy to get kids to tuck into a plate of greens, which is why it’s great to see programs like Nestlé Healthy Active Kids helping to provide support to improve the eating habits of local children.

The program is currently giving primary schools across the country the chance to win The Kitchen Kart – a $25,000 fullyequipped, mobile teaching kitchen that allows teachers to deliver nutrition and cooking education in the classroom.

Developed in collaboration with the

Australian Institute of Sport, the Nestlé Healthy Active Kids program has also created an easy to use website that offers teachers and parents a great range of online recipes, tools and fun activities to help children live a healthier life.

One of the best ways to get kids interested in trying new foods is to get them involved in the cooking process, making vegetables fun and helping kids to explore what foods they enjoy.

“Every child is different and finding out what vegetables kids do and don’t like is an ongoing process,” Nestlé Market Nutritionist, Megan Darragh said.

“Talking to kids about vegetables, trialling them in different ways, such as

grating veggies into spaghetti bolognese or savoury muffins, and getting kids involved in the kitchen can be a great way to familiarise children with new vegetables, or ones they don’t usually like to eat.”

It’s also good to remember that while many kids will sit down to vegetables at their evening meal, there’s plenty of opportunities to add them to the lunchbox to help boost their veggie intake throughout the day.

WINE REVIEWS Katnook 2015 Founder’s Block Merlot ($20): I often don’t like Australian merlots. Too many, especially those from the large companies, have been sweetened up to satisfy the American market. That isn’t a problem with this dry red, which has been matured in older French and American oak. It’s richly flavoured and I’m sure has the structure to mature for at least five years. Enjoy with a meaty casserole.

Riddoch Coonawarra 2015 Shiraz ($20): Coonawarra is best known for its cabernet sauvignon but I reckon it also produces some classy, sumptuous shiraz. This is a bold wine, with plenty of plummy, dark-berry, spicy flavours.

It’s the sort of red that would do justice to a fine steak or a rich mushroom casserole.

he Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors both failed to do it in recent NBA seasons but the Penrith Panthers women’s basketball team have managed to achieve an almighty feat – winning back to back Division 1 Youth League championships.

The Panthers won their second straight Youth League title after defeating minor premiers Central Coast 69-63 in last Sunday morning’s Grand Final played in Maitland. Penrith led for the majority of the 40-minute match before the Crusaders surged back to tie the game late.

Fortunately the Panthers, led by popular coach Leonie Moore, used their experience and determination to regain the lead and win by six points.

Speaking with the Weekender, Panthers captain Dominika Offner said it was an absolute thrill to go back to back.

“It definitely took a lot of hard work and determination from the girls but I always believed we could to it,” she said.

“Throughout the match there was a moment where I could tell the girls were getting a little bit flustered but I kept reassuring them that we had the game under control.”

Due to age restrictions, this was the final time the savvy guard, who landed two

three-pointers in the decider, was eligible to play in the Youth League competition.

Offner will leave the competition with three Youth League titles under her belt and plenty of memories, especially from this season.

“Each title has its special qualities but this year I got to play with my sister Teiarna and my parents were also part of the team set-up, with my dad assistant coach and my mum team manager,” she said.

“It was also special to win with my coach Leonie, who is an awesome coach that has been there since I started at Penrith. To finish my Youth League career with her was pretty special.”

While last Sunday’s historic win was a spectacular team effort, talented point guard Binta Salawu was the standout performer – winning the Grand Final’s Most Valuable Player award following a 20 point outing.

Offner said Salawu’s epic performance will be remembered for a long time.

“Anyone who watched the game couldn’t question that Binta deserved the MVP,” she said.

“Binta played awesome; she did what she needed to do and executed her job perfectly.

“While she scored 20 points, she also scored some crucial buckets in the end that we really needed.”

Rugby league still strong despite more One of the biggest clubs in the district, St Marys Junior Rugby League Club is dedicated to keeping ground, how did you fall in love with the sport?

I have always been in and around rugby league, primarily with the St Marys club since I was born.

My dad, Tony Dicker, was a player back when I was born and held numerous positions within the club and was the President of the Leagues Club when it opened.

It was inevitable that my brothers and I would be around the sport for the rest of our lives. Starting as a ball boy, playing, coaching and managing along the way.

How long have you been the President of the St Marys Junior Rugby League Club for?

I was only elected into the role at the end of last season, so this is my first year as President.

How long have you been involved with rugby league and what were your previous roles?

I have been involved in rugby league all of my life, starting out as a five-yearold and playing through to 1995 when I retired. I played 270 games for St Marys in those years.

I have assumed numerous roles throughout the years such as player, coach, manager, trainer, committee member and now President.

As President, explain what your role entails?

What are some of the challenges/issues facing rugby league locally?

There are numerous challenges out there, one being the rise of other sports such as OzTag and touch footy, and their competitions overlapping.

All these sports are competing for the sponsorship dollars needed for the clubs in the local area to operate.

It is also to ensure that the policies set down from our Leagues Board are handed down to our members and maintained.

Tell me about your rugby league back-

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

If I could improve one area of my sport it would be trying to recruit more of our younger players into the refereeing ranks.

As we are all aware without the refs the game struggles.

and more threats rugby league healthy throughout the district There seems to be a lack of numbers to be able to officiate our mini players but, if we could get them involved in those ages, we may be able to keep them going forward.

Are you happy with the amount of Local and State Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

Yes I am. Local and State Government provide an abundance of grants to all grassroots sports.

Our club is hoping to extend to the works that we have started at Boronia Park in St Marys.

There are always plenty of success stories about rugby league in the Western Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

I am very proud of the work that St Marys Leagues does within the football community – whether it be assisting other clubs within our district with training gear, schools with playing jerseys and backing our club’s juniors in playing this great sport from the mini footy through to the players that have developed into young representative stars. We are very proud of it all.

How many registered members does the St Marys Junior Rugby League Club currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

The club is one of the largest and we have 805 players from U6s through to our Ron Massey Cup team.

On top of that we have 234 volunteers in coaches, managers, trainers and committee members.

We introduced our first year of girls teams this year and we are looking to grow these teams next year with another 60 players.

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you see the sport locally in five years’ time?

There is a continual changing of the way the competitions are structured from the NRL all the way down.

Possibly our Sunday football could evolve into a mix of teams playing in competitions across districts.

I think the drive within the people running the clubs in the district will see the younger age groups flourish and grow with clubs taking in newer players from the new housing estate developments that are happening in the local area and beyond.

Impressive results at hockey event

Emus show glimpses of brighter future despite another Shute Shield season without a victory NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith Emus coach Julian Huxley admits while his first season in charge of the battling Shute Shield side was extremely rewarding, it was also very disappointing they weren’t able to record a victory for the third straight year.

Despite a number of close contests mixed in with the usual blowouts, Penrith weren’t able to lift themselves off the bottom of the Shute Shield ladder, recording zero wins from 18 attempts.

However among all the heartbreak, the Emus enjoyed plenty of highlights that will surely put them in good stead for the years ahead.

“The Manly game was fantastic, the boys showed some really good attacking rugby but the best game we played was against Gordon – we absolutely dominated them but weren’t able to close them out,” Huxley told the Weekender.

“It could have been a three or four win season, which would have blown everyone away but it wasn’t to be.”

After a short off-season, Huxley will very soon get back to the drawing board to start planning for 2018 where he’s determined to push his troops harder than ever.

U11 boys coach, Mark Walker, was impressed with his side.

“Over the day, the boys were exemplary in their behaviour, showing great enthusiasm and sportsmanship,” Walker said.

“I would like to thank the teams’ two managers – Julie and Sandy – for their assistance and support, and the parents.

“I believe the Nepean Hockey Association should be congratulated on investing in the development of our U11 boys and girls teams.”

“We need our boys to be fit and strong enough to compete. If I think about where we will start this off-season compared to last – it’s night and day.”

Huxley is also expected to do plenty of recruiting this off-season, to strengthen and add depth to the club’s lower grades.

Huxley said he’s already getting calls and text messages from players keen to be a part of Emu Nation next season.

“We had less numbers this year than any other club, most of our players played 80 minutes every week.”

During what was an up and down year for the Emus, Huxley managed to unearth a number of young stars that could have bright futures in the game.

“There’s a good 10 players that were so impressive. The biggest thing for me is to put them through a full pre-season and get them in shape,” Huxley said.

Around the grounds AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have won back to back games, defeating the South West Sydney Magpies 132-21 in Round 17 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Mitchell Stevens top scored with nine goals for the Rams. Penrith will take on the East Coast Eagles this Sunday morning. Meanwhile, the AuburnPenrith Giants have continued their winning ways, defeating the Western Wolves 56-10 in Round 16 of the AFL Sydney Premier Women’s Division competition. Jacqueline Gay kicked a team-high five goals for the Giants.

The Giants will battle the Sydney University Bombers this Saturday afternoon at Sydney Uni No 1 Oval.

AUSSIE RULES: Congratulations to Penrith Rams star Mitchell Stevens who became the first Rams player to kick 100 goals in a season since 1982.

Stevens has led his Division 2 team in goal scoring all season, and will no doubt be keen to add to his incredible tally in this weekend’s final round of the regular season.

AFL: The GWS Giants have recorded three straight victories, hammering last year’s Premiers the Western Bulldogs 105-57 last weekend. The 48-point win sees the Giants almost certain of a top four finish and a possible home final in week one. The Giants remain in second place on the AFL ladder and will take on the West Coast Eagles this Saturday.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team are back to their losing ways, smashed by the UTS St George Sparks 59-38 in Round 11 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition.

Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s team have had their five game winning streak snapped, defeated by the Sparks 51-41. Both teams will take on the GWS Fury in Round 12.

SOCCER: Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies together with Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres presented Kemps Creek Soccer Club a grant of $10,000 for the upgrade of lighting at Bill Anderson Reserve. “Recently Kemps Creek Soccer Club received grants for vital drainage installation and upgrades to fencing. epean Hockey Association’s U11 boys and girls representative teams have returned from the recent Metropolitan South West (MSW) Hockey Association U11’s Carnival with remarkable results.

Held at the Macarthur Hockey Complex in Narellan last week, Nepean Hockey’s U11 girls team reached the final of the MSW Carnival but were narrowly beaten in the dying seconds of the decider.

Despite the obvious heartbreak in the final, the girls improved out of sight as the competition progressed.

It was the first time in Nepean Hockey’s long and proud history that they entered an U11 girls team into the MSW Carnival.

“The girls improved massively over the six games and they all should be very proud of themselves,” U11 girls coach, Ryan Knowles said.

Meanwhile, Nepean Hockey’s U11 boys team also put in strong performances in each of their six tightly contested games at the MSW Carnival.
