memorial was held on Monday night in honour of two teenagers who lost their lives in a tragic crash in Emu Plains last weekend. 14-year-old Curtis Pallett and 17-year-old Joshua Cross were killed when their vehicle left the roadway on the Great Western Highway at the intersection of Grey Street and crashed into a power pole and a fence just before 9pm last Saturday night. A third teenager in the car, Daniel Moss, 18, survived the crash and is understood to still be in hospital in a stable condition. Around 500 people attended Monday night’s memorial to remember the teenagers and ponder a tragedy that has rocked the community. Story continues on » p. 3

Emu Plains tragedy the last straw as Police and State Government plan to saturate roads Story continued from » p. 1 Family members, school children, friends, parents and football mentors to the boys were visibly upset at the memorial while others banded together and remained positive, celebrating the lives of both Curtis and Joshua. “I just want Curt to know that everyone loves him and we’re all here to support him,” a close friend of Curtis’ said at the memorial. “I wasn’t that close with him but I did know him and I wanted to come here and show my support for them,” another friend of Curtis’ added. Initial reports suggest Curtis was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, with speed considered as a possible factor in the crash. The trio had reportedly left a friend’s 18th birthday party earlier that night. Curtis suffered critical injuries and died at the scene while Joshua was taken to hospital, but died just a short time later. On Wednesday, a Police spokesperson told the Weekender that the accident was still under investigation. Joshua’s girlfriend, Angela Kristy, posted about her heartbreak since the incident on social media.

“A lot of you have sent me condolences and I would like to thank you but I can’t bear to read through them at the moment,” she posted on Facebook. “I love Josh with all my heart and I know many others do too... lives taken way too early – fly high baby, I love you.” With the NSW road toll sitting at 229 this year, 25 more than the same time last year, the State Government and NSW Police declared on Wednesday that they’d had enough, announcing they would saturate the roads over the next month. “Despite our progress in reducing the number of lives lost on our roads over the last decade, I’m very concerned with current statistics. In human terms, an average of 15 lives have been lost every fortnight on our roads since the end of April – this simply must stop,” said Police Minister, Troy Grant. “We are pleading with everyone to slow down and obey the road rules – we do not want to see this tragic spike continue.” Assistant Police Commissioner John Hartley, Commander of the state’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said people needed to take more care. “Personal responsibility continues to be the factor in serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads,” he said.

Time’s up for Smith: NRL needs a new leader and a new direction When Dave Smith didn’t know who Australian captain Cameron Smith was when he was first appointed NRL CEO, we should have known that rugby league had a significant problem. Most forgave the mishap, willing to believe that despite his lack of rugby league knowledge, Mr Smith’s business background and corporate expertise would be to the game’s benefit. It hasn’t quite worked out that way and the latest debacle over television rights proves that Mr Smith simply isn’t the man to take the code forward in the years to come. His business expertise and background is obviously superb, but the man or woman in charge of rugby league needs one thing above all else – a legitimate connection with the fans. You will never please fans 100 per cent of the time but they at least need to believe you have the spirit of the game at heart. Some roles in the corporate world can be 100 per cent about learning and developing and ultimately being proven the right man or woman for the job; but others require something special in the heart to really be successful. Rugby league fans know that prior to his appointment, Dave Smith probably had never stood on the hill at Penrith, Brookvale or Leichhardt. When South Sydney was kicked out of the competition, Mr Smith probably would have been more worried about the traffic delays in the Sydney CBD than what the 80,000-strong crowd was so angry and passionate about. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen doubts over Mr Smith’s leadership spill into clubland, with bizarre talk of a rebel competition involving 12 of the 16 clubs, including Penrith. Let me assure you, that will not happen. Some journalists should know better than to start talking up the possibility of a second ‘war’ in the code. The issues will ultimately be resolved. But if the recent TV deal is anything to go by, the clubs’ concerns have some merit.

TROY DODDS @troydodds
At least the FFA and AFL pretend that the fans come first
I have no idea why the NRL would announce a deal with Channel Nine before having an agreement in place with Fox Sports, one of the game’s premium partners. Now Mr Smith is faced with the prospect of losing its lucrative major partner in Telstra, on top of the frosty relationship that now exists between the NRL and Fox Sports. There is clearly more to the story, because it simply doesn’t make sense that a businessman with the acumen of Mr Smith would freeze out a major partner like Fox, which treats the game with incredible respect and delivers a first class broadcast, when he still needs them as part of the new deal moving forward. The TV deal aside, Mr Smith’s biggest problem is that he hasn’t delivered a management style that was promised when he started the job. When ARL Commission Chairman John Grant, who himself needs to follow Dave Smith out the door, tapped former CEO David Gallop on the shoulder, it was made clear that Mr Grant thought Mr Gallop’s style was “too reactive”, declaring the NRL would operate very differently under the new leadership regime. But the NRL has never been more reactive. TV deals done without proper consultation with other partners, mid-year rule changes that confuse everyone from the coaches and players to the fans, and a business model that is very focused on the corporate success of head office. It’s a business at the end of the day, but at least the FFA and AFL pretend that the fans come first. Rugby league supporters lost that feeling long ago, and it is unlikely to return until a new wave of leadership rolls in. The NRL’s ultimate desire to essentially kill off suburban football and have us watching club games at big stadiums is flawed and will ultimately be another issue that divides the fans and NRL headquarters. It’s time we made a change.

our new recruits have wasted no time in jumping straight into the action after they joined St Marys Police Station this week. The recruits have come in fresh from graduating in Class 325 last Friday, August 21, and have joined St Marys Police Station as probationary constables. Alexandra Smith, Gary Sewell, Jacob Player and Kane Roberts completed their induction on Tuesday and were out on the road by late afternoon. Mr Roberts said it has been a long time coming to be wearing the uniform and being on the beat. “I’m very relieved to be here and to be in this position” he said. “I was in the waiting pool for about three-and-a-half years before I went to the academy at Goulburn. “It’s something I thought I could build a career out of after coming from a construction background where I saw older men struggling to do the hard labour jobs.” Mr Player, who was in the pool for the same amount of time, said that it is a career he feels he can get a lot out of. “There’s so much diversity and there’s constant hours,” he said.

Police snapshot St Clair: Teens approached in separate incidents
St Marys: Man charged after incident at police station
Police are continuing their appeals for assistance after two teenage boys were approached by strangers in separate incidents in St Clair. At about 3.55pm on Monday, August 17, a 15-year-old boy was getting off a school bus near the intersection of Cook Street and McIntyne Street. He ran past a black Subaru Impreza with a red P-plate on it when a man sitting behind the driver in the back seat leaned out of the car window and offered the teenager a lift. The boy ran from the area with the matter then reported to police. A canvass of the area by police was unsuccessful. The man is described as Caucasian in appearance with short, black hair. At about 3.20pm on Friday, August 14, a 15-year-old boy was getting off a school bus near the intersection of Rotorua Street and Feather Street when a silver Mitsubishi stopped on the southern side of Rotorua Street. The male driver opened the car window and spoke to the boy who became afraid and ran from the street. Officers from St Marys Local Area Command are investigating the incidents. In both incidents, each man is described as around 20 years of age. Police are encouraging parents to discuss ‘safe people, safe places’ messages with their kids including calling 000 if they’re scared, knowing where safe places are and making sure parents know where they are.
A man is due to appear in court today (August 28) after he allegedly assaulted a police officer. At about 1.15am on Friday, August 14, it is alleged a man attended St Marys Police Station in a taxi before becoming involved in a dispute with the driver. Officers came out and spoke to the man as the taxi left the area and issued a direction for the man to leave the premises. It is alleged he refused to leave and remained in the area for a short time before he allegedly attemped to damage a nearby parked vehicle by punching the windows. He was restrained and, after a short struggle, was placed under arrest. The 22-year-old was later charged with a number of offences.
North St Marys: Man charged over stabbing incident A man has been charged over an alleged domestic-related stabbing at North St Marys. At about 7.30pm on Tuesday, August 18, a man and woman became involved in an argument inside a home on Maple Road. It is alleged the man stabbed the woman in her upper arm during the argument. The pair went to Nepean Hospital by taxi where the 53-year-old woman was treated. Police from St Marys Local Area Command were alerted to the incident on Saturday, August 22 and commenced an investigation Following police inquiries, a 62-year-old man was arrested and will appear in court.

egacy Week is just around the corner and presents a good time for Australians to acknowledge the families of our incapacitated and deceased veterans. The funds raised from Legacy Week, August 30 to September 5, aid Legacy in continuing to assist over 90,000 widows and 1,900 children as well as people with disabilities across Australia. The only organisation of its type in the world, Legacy relies on several dedicated volunteers to carry out their vital work.
Nepean Legacy Chairman, Paul Martin, said the families of the dedicated Australians who serve deserve recognition of their sacrifice. “For each serving Australian who risks everything, a family does the same, and when needed, Legacy is ready to provide support,” he said. By simply buying a Legacy badge or other merchandise during the week, Legacy will receive crucial funds to help support the families and those who served. Navigating their way to the top Local engineering students hoping to make waves at national robotics competition DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
our talented engineering students from the University of Western Sydney’s Penrith campus have made it to the finals of a national robotics competition. In the 2015 National Instruments Autonomous Robotics Competition final to be held on September 22, the team is required to build a fully autonomous robot to navigate through a competition course. The engineering students – Michael Jay, Jason Feldman, Ben Gibbons and Charlie Song – have been working hard on the competition since February. Mr Jay, an electrical engineering student, said he is looking forward to the finals but it has not come without its challenges. “We get together once or twice a week, and have faced a lot of challenges on the programming side of the robot,” he said. “This time we’ve lost our main programmer as he finished university, so its been difficult for us to regain that knowledge.” Mr Jay said the team has picked up an extra member, but has a lot of work to do to remain competitive in a long and challenging process. “From the start of the competition there
F
are milestones we have to complete to maintain our participation,” he said. “The first one was getting a sensor working with the software, and then they progressively got harder as we approached the final competition. “We’ve got to the final every year we have competed, but there’s a few more obstacles we have to travel through this year so that’s where it’s going to be harder.” This year’s ‘Transport and roll-out’ theme is a great way for the 30 teams of mechatronics and engineering students to showcase their various skills. The competition, to be held at the University of New South Wales, will see robots complete tasks like navigating to a loading bay, collecting goods, navigating to drop off zones, and avoiding both static and dynamic obstacles. Gu Fang, team supervisor and Associate Professor in Mechatronic Engineering at UWS, said he is very proud of the team’s achievement so far. “They’ve put a lot of time into this and, when a milestone was due, they would work until midnight to make deadline,” he said. “This is an extracurricular student initiative and I really hope they go well this year.”

Penrith City Council wants to hear your views on a Planning Proposal to reclassify certain public land in St Marys Town Centre (the Town Centre). The land is generally located adjacent to the existing shopping centres in the Town Centre (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) and consists of open space and car parking. The land is already zoned to allow mixed-use development (residential, retail and business). The Planning Proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community Land to Operational Land. This is required to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy (the Strategy). These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains as Community Land. The Strategy identifies how the Town Centre can become a vital, vibrant and sustainable place and provides policies and actions to create attractive public spaces and encourage new development. This will, in turn, generate activity in the Town Centre, attract new businesses and investment, and generate jobs. The actions include the creation of a town square, residential development near the train station, construction of a new street between Queen Street and Charles Hackett Drive, and the integration of the shopping centres into the Town Centre. These actions all require the use of some of the land. Changing the classification of the land does not remove the land from Council’s ownership or prevent the current use of the land from continuing. The Planning Proposal does not propose the sale, lease or development of the land – these matters will be considered in separate and later processes on how best to use the land to benefit the Town Centre and its communities. The Planning Proposal is on public exhibition for 28 days from 24 August to 21 September 2015 at Council’s Civic Centre, St Marys Office, Penrith and St Marys Libraries, and online. Fact sheets and guidance on how to make a submission are also available. Council officers will be available to answer questions on the Planning Proposal at the Civic Centre (Mondays and Fridays) and St Marys Office (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Alternatively, please contact Matthew Rose on 4732 7703 or at mrose@penrithcity.nsw.gov.au In addition to the public exhibition, an independently chaired public hearing has been arranged to occur before any Council decision is made. The timing and venue for the public hearing will be published once the public exhibition has ended.

Tearoom & Cafe ‘Badger House’
This week The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre will celebrate its 25th Anniversary season with its performance of ‘La Stupenda’ featuring some of Australia’s most outstanding classical musicians. In 1984 the ‘seeds were sown’ when Council proposed a new performing arts space incorporating a Conservatorium of Music for western Sydney as a Bicentennial project. Named after one of Australia’s most iconic, lauded and much loved operatic stars the late Dame Joan Sutherland OM AC DBE, The Joan, as it is affectionately known, is a place of artistic excellence, creative opportunity and community celebration. Over the years The Joan has hosted performers from far and wide. From our own local community groups, schools and performing arts companies to international superstars including Sir Bob Geldof, Tina Arena, John Williamson, Kamahl plus many more. The Joan is a thriving centre for culture attracting over 6.5 million people from western Sydney as audiences,
participating in classes or performing on The Joan’s stages. Earlier this year we co-funded a report ‘Building Western Sydney’s Cultural Arts Economy – A key to Sydney’s success’, which showed the 1 in 10 Australians who live in western Sydney see only one per cent of Commonwealth arts program funding, and 5.5 per cent of State Cultural Arts, heritage and events funding. Despite these inequities, the region has grown its own unique mass of Cultural Arts activity around its venues, events and organisations that provide an exceptional Cultural Arts offer. This week I’m hosting the Mayoral Arts and Culture Summit to discuss these inequities in Government funding and look at how we can attract a larger share for western Sydney. Penrith has a rich history with the performing arts and today that community is still growing. I look forward to many more talented artists and musicians to grace The Joan’s stages in the years to come.

Special Report
The untold local stories from a crisis DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
Homelessness is a national issue that is often swept aside, especially in cities like Penrith, where there is a strong business community and large family focus. However, the last census data indicated that in the Nepean / Blue Mountains areas, there were hundreds of people living as ‘rough sleepers’ on the street, or staying between people’s homes as ‘couch sleepers’. Furthermore, almost a third of households in the region were under financial stress, and at risk of homelessness. Despite efforts from many dedicated local and national organisations, homelessness has not been overcome, and people are still living under these conditions. These are the untold stories of Penrith’s homelessness crisis...
Amy is moving with her four children to a more accessible home for her three-year-old son who is in a wheelchair
A family at risk my is living in a private rental property with four of her seven children, and has sought assistance from housing services to help her move to a home that is accessible for her three-year-old, wheelchair bound son. The first time Amy used housing services from Wentworth Community Housing (WCH) was five years ago, after being left homeless as a ‘couch sleeper’, when her partner of 10 years had an affair and kicked her out, keeping the three children they had together. “I was homeless for a year and a half before I knew anything about housing and was sleeping at friends’ houses or wherever I could,” she said.
A
“I wouldn’t see my kids for a very long time, but my eldest daughter came with me because she was from my very first relationship.” Six months after Amy connected with WCH, she found a private rental property. But a year and a half ago, after another tumultuous relationship that brought three more children, things got hard with her son and Amy began to struggle. “My son was diagnosed with a terminal illness at four-months-old, and they told me he’d only live to be four-years-old,” she said. “I fell behind in rent because we spent a lot of time in the children’s hospital. You’ve got to weigh up your priorities; rent needs to be paid, but when it came to medication, he had to have it.
“WCH helped me out with some funding to fix up my rent to keep us in a home.” When her son got his wheelchair, Amy reapproached WCH for more help, and they agreed to subsidise her rent to move her into a home with better disabled access. As a mother in financial hardship, she said it was stressful because there is no room for error. Her future remains uncertain and on shaky ground. “You’re always worried you’re going to end up in that situation again where you’re on the streets with children,” she said. Amy said as hard as it was homeless, the future of her children kept her going. “There is a future, and every day is a day closer to your life getting better,” she said.

Anthony lives out of his car
Living out of his car nthony has been living in his car for two years, and plays it down like it’s just a part of life. “I just lay my seats back for a bed,” he said. “You get used to it after a while, but the first six months is probably the hardest. After that you get into the drift of things and it’s just like a normal life. “I go to all the food services, and for showers you just go to the tennis courts or the pool, you make do.” Anthony is considered a ‘car sleeper’,
A
parking his car in different locations around the city when he gets told to move along by police. “In six months I got raided about 60 times by the police. The car that I’m living in now was my ex’s, but she was an ice addict so I’m pretty sure she was doing ‘runs’ in it,” he said. After working for 13 years, Anthony lost his job at a local Woolworths and found it hard to find work again. “I only know how to stack shelves so I’d have to start from the bottom again,” he said. After two family homes broke down, Anthony has lost the motivation to rebuild another, and on a government allowance, said it’s hardly enough money to pick himself up again. “I’ve already built up homes with two partners and lost everything so why do it again?” he said. “I get $400 a fortnight but it’s hardly enough to eat after you put petrol in your car and do your washing – two loads to wash and dry is almost $30. “In another month I can withdraw from my superannuation and see what I can do.” Anthony said he is not on any drugs, and has even given up cigarettes, but feels this pushes him down the priority list for housing. His future is wildly uncertain.
David and Alan have found a home
There’s always hope avid, 66, and his son Alan, 44, became ‘rough sleepers’ in October last year, living under the Windsor Bridge for eight weeks. “It was terrible. It actually was cold at times, and when it was warm there were millions of mosquitos. When it rained it came in under the bridge, and it was noisy with all the traffic going over the bridge all night,” David said. Eventually, David and Alan carried a mattress across the bridge to get them off the cold ground.
D
“I found an old foam mattress we slept on from a rubbish tip and a couple of old blankets, that’s all we had there,” he said. To eat, they would walk to a weekday community kitchen, and on Saturday and Sunday nights, there were meals on the other side of the bridge – that’s where they got connected with Wentworth Community Housing (WCH). “WCH put us in temporary accommodation in South Penrith – we got the place on Christmas Eve,” he said. “We went there with nothing, just a swag, and when we left thee months later, we had a houseful of furniture. “WCH found us a private rental, and it actually wasn’t too hard because the real estate wanted someone in the house within days, and we were willing.” But David said unless you are proactive at getting yourself out of homelessness, it’s hard to escape the vortex. “They need to get off their backsides and do something. They’ve got to want to do it, my son and I didn’t want to be there, we were getting sick, we needed a place,” he said. Alan said most homeless people they know don’t really want houses, and that they aren’t willing to get one between several of them. “What they want to do is be homeless and spend their money on alcohol, drugs and gambling,” he said.

Heartless vandals damage playground at Jamison Park
Penrith businesses set to take advantage of Chinese demand Penrith-based business is set to take advantage of a program that aims to export quality Australian goods and services to Asia. Nova Spring Water joined Australian soccer great Tim Cahill and NSW Minister for Trade and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, in marking the official launch of the NSW Business Chamber’s Export Growth China program at a gala event in Shanghai last week. The Chamber’s groundbreaking Export Growth China program showcases Australia’s best goods and services to Chinese wholesale buyers and distributors in a purpose-built showroom located in ShanghaiMart, the largest permanent trade centre in Asia. The program enables small and medium-sized Australian businesses to reach a global audience while the Chamber’s international trade experts on the ground in Shanghai proactively match them with potential business partners. Nova Spring Water bottles pure spring water from the Central Coast Highlands of NSW which has been processed through a five-stage filtration process, and is one of 65 Australian businesses taking part in the program to achieve export success in China. “As Australia’s only producer of bulk water bottled in BPA-free packaging, which is also completely recyclable, there

lay equipment at Jamison Park has been damaged by a suspicious fire. A Penrith City Council spokesperson expressed disappointment about the incident that will come at a cost to the Penrith community. “This type of vandalism costs the community as the funds need to be allocated from other work programs to fix up the damage,” she said. “There has been at least $10,000 to $15,000 damage. The damaged area is

currently sectioned off, and will also be followed up by police.” The spokesperson said the playground is an important part of the community, that teaches children valuable skills. “Jamison Park playground is one of 142 playgrounds spread across the city servicing the needs of children,” she said. “All popular playgrounds provide a range of experiences for children as part of the learning process. These include height, speed, balance, and general risk taking.” It is believed the damage took place during the night of Thursday, August 20.
Stuart Ayres talks up Australian products at last week’s launch is an exciting opportunity for Nova Spring Water to take advantage of the growing demand for ‘clean and green’ products among Chinese consumers,” said Nova Spring Water founder Nitin Lotliker. “The showroom is ideally located in a bustling international trade centre, and with a significant continent of Chinese media and trade officials, we are confident that our products will be in front of key decision makers to put us on the right path to achieving export success.” Tell us your business success stories: Email news@westernweekender.com. au or call 4722 2998.

Local cheaters busted
Amy, Penrith – NO “I’ve never really felt the need. I think it’s right under certain circumstances, like if you believe that person is cheating on you or doing stuff behind your back. It’s not good to jump to conclusions though.” Taylor, Faulconbridge – YES “With my ex I did. Heaps of random girls would approach him when we were out, and he wouldn’t explain who they were. I felt I had reason to. If you don’t have a reason to then you shouldn’t.”
Penrith residents caught up in hacking scandal DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
undreds of people across the local area are caught up in the Ashley Madison hacking controversy. Ashley Madison is a website that brings together men and women who wish to cheat on their partners, but after being hacked last week, it’s now at the centre of a privacy storm. Cheating partners are now facing uneasy conversations after being exposed by the hack, led by a group that calls itself ‘The Impact Team’. 27,315 Australian paid accounts are on the website, according to NationMaster. Across Emu Heights, Emu Plains and Jamisontown, NationMaster identified 75 Ashley Madison accounts, and a further 25 across Erskine Park and St Clair. NationMaster says 28 accounts belong to people living in the Cambridge Gardens,
H
James, Penrith – NO “I trust my partner completely. I haven’t ever really felt the need to doubt her.”
Ashley Madison released Sydney’s “cheating hot spots” earlier this year Cambridge Park or Claremont Meadows areas, while Glenmore Park, Luddenham and Agnes Banks are also linked to accounts on the website.
The hacking group stole data, including the names, credit card information, photos and detailed fantasies of almost 40 million people around the world.
Weekender legal columnist Daniel McKinnon, from Complete Law, said the scandal will have ongoing consequences. “The biggest challenge faced by Ashley Madison members is that the Internet is forever,” he said. “No amount of law suits is going to erase the information that is now floating around in cyberspace.” Read Daniel McKinnon’s column about online privacy on page 67.

I opened my letterbox this week to find Lindsay MP Fiona Scott’s “Biggest Survey”, asking for my thoughts on education, infrastructure, welfare and same sex marriage. Leaving aside the fact that this is clearly an exercise in taxpayerfunded data mining – which will be used to target voters on key issues on the run up to the election next year – I’ve already tried, unsuccessfully, to discuss these issues with Fiona. Several months ago I wrote a detailed letter to her about the issue of marriage equality. A month went by with no response, so I called her office. I was told someone would “ring back later today”. Another month on, no phone call, no response, not even an acknowledgement that my letter was received. Just a glossy survey in my letterbox. There’s not much point being invited to “have a say on what matters most to you” when attempts to do just that are simply ignored. TIM VOLLMER, KINGSWOOD

information centre! What’s the use of having all these ‘adventure’ activities and putting money into more accommodation if travellers don’t even have a nice place to stop in a convenient location (with parking facilities for caravans and trailers), get a cuppa, use clean toilets, pick up some maps and brochures, and find out about the local attractions! What about incorporating a souvenir shop into the information centre with merchandise? Nice postcards of the Nepean River, Lennox Bridge etc. Books about the local history of the area, t-shirts, bumper stickers about Penrith etc. These are advertising in themselves to promote the area! Every country town and city always has an effective tourism information centre. The previous Mulgoa Road site at Panthers had served the community well in the past, but rather than closing it, the council would benefit more from revamping it. Have signage on the freeway to indicate it is there, and provide a good customer service for visitors where they can find out about facilities in the area rather than relying on online information and marketing. Penrith is the gateway to the Blue Mountains, and we should be investing in an excellent tourist information centre. Then you will see tourism increasing in the local area, and the investment will pay off! ANNETTE SICARD, KINGSWOOD PARK

he two year rule – if you haven’t worn it, chuck it. Letting go of some old favourites is always hard to do, but what better time to do it than National Op Shop Week. Phillip Basti, Retail Operations Manager at St Vincent de Paul Society is encouraging locals to let go of their old stuff and donate to local charities. To do that, he is endorsing Margie Abbott’s ‘two year rule’ she announced at the launch of National Op Shop Week. “Men can find it really hard to deal with a two year rule, they wait until there’s a hole in it or it falls off,” Mr Basti said. “We can’t use it when it’s got a hole in it, so I really would encourage them to try to use the rule.” Mr Basti said people should bring donations directly into stores.
T
“If you want your valuable donations to be really looked after so they can go towards community programs, it needs to come through the front door, not left around to get exposed to the elements,” he said. “For bulky items like furniture, we even have pick ups available.” Mr Basti said around one million kilograms of clothing per year passes through St Vincent de Paul’s distribution centre in Kingswood, that couldn’t be sorted without volunteers. Store Manager at St Vincent de Paul South Penrith, Lisa Bradley, said locals can donate almost anything to the store at its new location in Batt Street. “We have everything here, bric-a-brac, books, furniture and clothing. There’s nothing people don’t want,” Ms Bradley said. You can drop in items or arrange a bulky item pick up by calling 4731 5900.

Bessie reaches fantastic milestone Oxley Park resident celebrates 90th birthday
Oxley Park resident Bessie Gray said she never thought she would make it to the age of 90 but here she is, at 90-years-old, after just celebrating the milestone. Having lived in Oxley Park for over 70 years, moving there in 1946 from Cowra, Mrs Gray has seen it all. “I was a big country girl at heart and that’s why it was easy to come out to Oxley Park in those days – it was basically all country,” she said. “You could leave your doors and windows unlocked, your groceries would be delivered to you and there were dirt roads. “I knew everyone in Oxley Park – it was a great time to be there.” She was married to the love of her life for just over 50 years before he passed away. The pair were pen pals while Mr Gray was in the war. He proposed the first time they met at Cowra railway station and they were married just over three months later. “He was the best husband, provider and father,” Mrs Gray said. Mrs Gray celebrated her 90th birthday on August 23.

28 e all know someone who is suffering from stress and anxiety. We also know that stress is responsible for most medical conditions. Some figures claim it is responsible for over 85 per cent of known conditions. Anxiety is an overwhelm of stress. So what is stress? Stress is defined as “a perception of a real or imagined threat to your body or ego”. It can be a real life threatening event or just something you think might happen but it is all in your head, either way you get the same physiological response which is that cortisol increases (it’s a stress hormone), adrenalin increases and it shifts a cascade of events in your physiology which will lead to increasing belly fat, it raises bad cholesterol and lowers good cholesterol, increases inflammation, lowers testosterone, increases infertility, for women it makes hair grow on their moustaches and lose hair on their heads, it causes muscle loss, insomnia, palpitations, dizziness, and it goes on and on… It reads like a bad nightmare but there is help. Hypnotherapy is by far the fastest and best way to overcome stress, anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. Statistics prove it again and again. Dr Alfred A Barrios conducted a survey of psychotherapy literature. He discovered that: • 93 per cent of clients recover after six sessions of hypnotherapy • 72 per cent of clients recover after 22 sessions of behavioural therapy

• 38 per cent of clients recover after 600 sessions of psychoanalysis Amazing. Not only does hypnotherapy work faster – six sessions compared to 22 or more – but it works for a larger percentage of people. It can work for you. By combining modern hypnosis with the latest in neuro science it is possible to achieve even faster results with many
clients experiencing significant relief after just one session. So try it for yourself and find peace and happiness. Four times faster than behavioural therapy. And a whopping 100 times faster than psychoanalysis. You may be surprised at just how well it works for you. What have you got to lose?

ou’ve had an immediate denture fitted. What next? The first 24-48 hours are important in the life of a new denture. Be sure to follow the care instructions provided as it will make your adjustment period easier. You’ll need to visit your clinician four or five days after the initial fitting to have your immediate denture relined. What is a reline? A reline is the placement of a custommoulded lining inside your denture that matches the natural contour of your gums. Your gum shape will change significantly in the two to four weeks following tooth extraction. Swelling reduces and existing teeth settle slightly.
Y
As this happens, your denture will fit differently. Some areas may gape while others may rub or become tight. A reline becomes necessary to regain a proper fit. A simple four stage process 1. Your clinician will set a soft tissue conditioning material in the base of your denture. You must wear your denture with the liner for two weeks. Over this time, it will take an impression of your mouth as you eat, drink and speak as usual. It will also help your gums to heal. 2. On your return visit, your clinician will assess for gaps and add more soft tissue conditioner if required. You will need to wear your denture for a
further two weeks. 3. Once your clinician is happy with the results, they’ll put a final light body wash onto the liner and ask you to bite, as they take a final impression. Then, the soft tissue conditioning lining will be removed and replaced with a new acrylic denture base. 4. It’s possible you will need a second reline after four to six months, depending on the number of teeth you’ve had removed. The more extractions you have, the greater the changes to gum shape over time. Continuing care for your immediate denture will ensure your denture fit remains as comfortable as possible.

30 steoporosis is a disease where bones become weak. The bones may fracture more easily than normal bone. Osteoporosis can affect any bone but the most common fracture sites are hip, spine and wrist. Many people do not know they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture. In other cases there may be pain in the bone or muscle. The risk of osteoporosis is measured by bone density. Throughout life new bone is added to the skeleton and old bone is taken away. This process determines a person’s bone density. Bone density usually peaks when you are in your mid 20s. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if they offer bone density testing. This test is quick and checks if you have osteoporosis. Some of the possible risk factors for osteoporosis include: Family history, lack of calcium, low vitamin D levels, lack of exercise, alcohol/smoking, certain medications and certain medical conditions. Please ask your pharmacist or doctor if your medications or conditions may increase your chances of developing osteoporosis. There are three things that can help prevent osteoporosis: diet, exercise and vitamins. Diet – Avoid caffeine, alcohol, soft drinks and salt. Please consult a dietitian if you require extra dietary information. Exercise – weight-bearing exercise, resistance exercise and balancing exercise. Please speak to a personal trainer to develop a plan. Vitamins – There are several vitamins

that can reduce the chances of osteoporosis. The main two are calcium and vitamin D. Calcium – Calcium is vital for building and maintaining strong bones. Most people do not get enough calcium from their diet. Vitamin D – Vitamin D helps the
absorption of calcium and reduces the loss of calcium. Please speak to your GP or pharmacist about taking a calcium or vitamin D supplement. If you have any concerns or questions about osteoporosis, please contact Osteoporosis Australia or speak to your pharmacist or GP.

Abundant Life & Health 4721 3198 abundant_life_health.ntpages.com.au
e all want to look our best, especially when others are looking. The trouble is we want to look good but rarely want to put the required effort in to achieve it. The weight loss industry is a classic example. Everyone has a pill or a system that requires little or no effort and the fat just falls off? Well, that is what they want you to believe but, honestly, is it believable? Achievable? We all know that the real answer to that question is NO, yet still we want to believe. There are many experts on the Internet and TV promoting the latest “Miracle Pill” and because they are famous or have a title such as Doctor, or Professor, they are believed without question. Unfortunately rapid weight loss is dangerous to your health; also if too fast,
W
you end up looking like those dogs whose skin is two sizes too big for them, cute on a dog but on a person? I don’t think so. The other problem with weight loss programs is the plateau effect. This is where things are going well then you stop losing weight and no matter what you do things stay the same. There is a very good reason for this to happen and it can be avoided but you need a professional to guide you. Summer is coming. If you want to look your best in those skimpy summer clothes or cosies on the beach, you need to start now. Being overweight is not just a visual problem. Australia is the fattest country in the world per head of population – not a very flattering title. We used to be known for our lean and tough physiques, now we are the fat and flabby Aussies. So
what? Well fat is not just a visual problem. Extra fat means we are also heading to be the Diabetic leaders of the world. Fatter also means greater risk of a heart attack, inflammatory diseases, no energy, depression and lousy quality of life. And NO there will never be a pill to cure these. You can lose weight in a healthy way but it requires a practitioner who is schooled in health and wellness and that means a naturopath with strong nutrition training. A FAT loss program, not just a weight loss program, is what you need. A program that will not leave you feeling hungry and one that will not see you plateau and will not see the weight go back on after the program is finished. If you want to know more about this give us a call at Abundant Life & Health on 4721 3198

hen was the last time you visited the doctor? I am surprised by how many people tell me that they haven’t visited the doctor in years. ABS Statistics from 2012-13 reported that 20 per cent of the Australian population did not see a GP in the last 12 months. Good health! When we have it, it’s great. When we don’t it can it turn our life upside down. If you suffer from any chronic conditions such as Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol or Asthma it is important to go in for a check up at least every three to six months depending on your overall health. Prevention is better than cure. Even
W
when you are healthy, it is a good habit to see your doctor at least once every 12 months. It is also essential for everyone with health complaints to seek an opinion without delay. We tend to procrastinate but should never put our health on hold. Delaying a visit to the GP can be very serious and detrimental to your health and could be the difference between being treatable and something that is permanent and irreversible. Surprisingly a staggering 44 per cent of people that visited the doctor in the last 12 months delayed their visit to see their GP. ABS statistics showed six per cent of that 44
per cent delayed seeing their GP due to the cost related with seeing their doctor. If you are living in Penrith and surrounding suburbs then cost should not be a reason for that delay. We are lucky in that so many of the doctors and medical centres in our area are Bulk Billing. They don’t charge the patient any out of pocket expenses. Whatever you have scheduled in life whether it be family, work, study, sport or even a holiday, managing your health makes things a lot easier for you to enjoy those things in life. It doesn’t take very long! Take some time out for your health and go and see your GP without delay.

on’t go it alone! Group fitness may just be your answer to starting and finally sticking to your exercise routine. Frequently a key factor in lack of exercise adherence is accountability. It’s very easy to just roll over and go back to sleep or bypass the gym on the way home from work because you are not letting anyone down, except for yourself. Group fitness is a great way to meet like-minded and motivated individuals that share common goals and interests with you. This positive environment mixed in with encouragement and direction from the instructor can be a major factor in keeping you on track. Evolution: Group Fitness has also well and truly evolved beyond the simple aerobics and step classes, and has transformed into a wide collection of functional training sessions that target your entire body in a wide range of ways. The variety of training techniques has made group fitness more popular and beneficial than ever before. Classes such as pilates, yoga, tabata, ride, kickboxing, bounce and kettlebell means there is something for absolutely everyone. Time management: Forget about watching the clock! The variety of group fitness classes makes the time enjoyable, and the energy level of the instructor makes you at times forget you’re even working hard. Looking at the clock for rest time in-between sets and exercises or how many minutes left on the treadmill can now be a thing of the past. Just jump into a class and enjoy the ride. Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District StEPS Program Nurse Unit Manager, Noeleen Horswell, said it’s really important for children to have these checks around the age of four. “It’s the best time to pick up any problems with their eyes,” she said. “If the problems aren’t picked up by the age of eight, they can have their vision affected for the rest of their life if something isn’t done now.” StEPS Vision Screener, Melanie Skoreyko, said they try to create a warm environment for the children. “We try to take the pressure off them because it can be daunting,” she said. “I get the parents to sit with them and try to get their confidence up before the test which usually does the trick.” If a problem is picked up by the staff at the centre, the child is sent to Westmead Children’s Hospital for further testing, possibly leading to the diagnosis of glasses. You can call the centre on 4730 5100 for more information or to make a booking.

T
he Penrith Panthers go on the road for the final time in 2015 on Monday night when they travel to the nation’s capital to take on the Canberra Raiders. It is a dangerous trip in which to expect a victory – the Panthers have very little to play for, would feel down on confidence after last week’s dour loss to the Dragons and will face less than comfortable conditions on the last day of winter. Adding to the woes is that Penrith will be without their best defender, Elijah Taylor, who played on for as long as he could with a broken hand last week against the Dragons before being forced from the field. 25 years ago a match between Penrith and Canberra at the back end of the season would have been a blockbuster. Success is never permanent, however, and in 2015 both of these sides find themselves
as non-glamour clubs fighting for pride and aiming to give their fans hope that brighter times are ahead. For the Panthers, if injuries hadn’t caused so much grief in 2015, the finals would have been almost a certainty. Fans may be frustrated at the end result this year but they can sleep peacefully during the off-season knowing that at full strength, their team will be among the premiership favourites next year. Canberra fans are probably a little less hopeful – they’ve seen their team win just twice at home this season and fail to close out matches that should have been theirs for the taking. However, former Panther Blake Austin has given fans at least something to cheer in 2015 and with Aidan Sezer joining the Green Machine next year, there is the foundation of a competitive squad. There is every indication that this will be a close game, and hopefully nothing like the 74-12 mauling the Panthers copped at this same venue in 2008 (yes, it still hurts to think about it). These sides met a little over a month ago,
PANTHERS V RAIDERS MONDAY, AUGUST 31 • 7PM GIO STADIUM, CANBERRA REFEREES: HENRY PERENARA AND MATT NOYEN TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7PM RADIO: TRIPLE M LIVE 7PM with the Raiders prevailing 34-24 on a day that essentially ended Penrith’s realistic hopes of making the finals. Other recent games between the two sides have also been close, including two six-point wins to Penrith last year. History shows that with the odd exception, games between the Panthers and Raiders are usually only decided by a couple of tries and generally late in the contest. All-time matches between the two sides are extremely close in terms of the win/
loss tally and incredibly, according to the Rugby League Project, just 12 points separate the Panthers and Raiders in the all-time point scoring tally for matches between these two clubs. That’s quite a stat considering they’ve played almost 70 times since 1982. While Penrith were disappointing in the 19-12 loss to the Dragons last weekend, you cannot question their will to win. They turned up to play, but injuries again caught up with them and the lack of cohesion in attack was obvious. Had one or two passes stuck, the Panthers would have run away with the game but it simply wasn’t to be. Hopefully that loss hasn’t drained too much of the side’s confidence because if they turn up with the same attitude against Canberra on Monday night then we’ll in the very least be in for an entertaining game. At this point of the year, there’s nothing to lose in just throwing the ball around so while we’ll probably see the odd mistake, at least we may get some points and witness some great tries.

ALL ABOARD THE HAYNE PLANE ow good is it to watch the Hayne Plane chasing his dream and doing so well. Just a talented boy from Minto who grew up to play in the NRL. But he got bored with that and so decided to take on the impossible, a crack at one of the biggest sports in the world and incredibly a sport he’d only ever played on the XBox. The former Eels fullback has certainly silenced his knockers and doubters. I’ll admit I reserved my judgement because I knew nothing about the NFL and all those who did, told me he would really struggle to make it. Well I’ve been lucky enough to spend some time in NSW Origin camp with Hayne last year. I’ve interviewed him many times and also observed up close his incredible natural talent. Whether kicking goals from impossible angles at training or beating all comers at FIFA on Playstation with teammates back in the room, he could do it all. Hayne quite simply is a one of a kind talent and a highly competitive “freak”.
H
From what I saw and knew of Hayne I could imagine him bamboozling all those would-be NFL defenders but I was told “forget it, he’s no chance making the cut in a game he’s never played”. Well as a rugby league fan and Hayne fan, I think I speak for many of us who are absolutely loving what we are seeing. Surely rugby league is the perfect training ground for players wanting a crack at the NFL. Think about it, our players, especially fullbacks, have to do everything at speed and under pressure with a wall of defenders coming at them. Jarryd now has more time and space to weave his magic and dominate the NFL. This story is the biggest Australian sports story that I can remember and huge in the US as well. Yes they are trying to keep a lid on it over there but I think we can all get very excited because in the words of his 49ers coach Jim Tomsula, “the guy’s doing really well, he’s making a great case for himself”.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE e have had the luxury of some great experience in the ranks the last couple of seasons. It has been a huge advantage for the younger generation to have these role models as part of their development. We are preparing to say goodbye to Nigel Plum, Nathan Smith and Brent Kite, who have decided to hang up the boots after distinguished careers. Others including Sika Manu and Lewis Brown are leaving Penrith to continue their careers elsewhere. Collectively there is over 1000 NRL games of experience departing the club next season. All of these men have played a significant role in the growth and success of the Panthers over the last few years. All of them are great clubmen, family men and leaders. Fortunately there is good reason to be optimistic. The baton will be passed onto players like Reagan CampbellGillard, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Bryce Cartwright and Isaah Yeo. They have had the opportunity to learn from our retirees and departing players, on and off the field, and next season some of the responsibility to lead the way passes to

They won’t ask for much fuss or fanfare to be made but I think some is deserved! So please everyone join us at the last game of the season next Saturday against Newcastle. Join MG’s Members March and show your Panther Pride one more time in 2015. Let’s fill Pepper Stadium with Panthers fans and give these great men the send-off they deserve. Let’s honour the tireless service they have given this club and the game we all love. A big crowd will help us finish the year on a high and hopefully send these boys out winners.

Kite’s incredible final gesture Brent Kite’s final act as a first grade footballer will be to hand back his Clive Churchill Medal. And he has a very good reason for doing so...
NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87
R
ecently retired Penrith Panthers prop Brent Kite will auction off his 2008 Clive Churchill Medal in December to raise money for charity. The 34-year-old officially retired from the game last week after 313 first grade appearances, 10 Origins and two premierships. The former Manly and St George Illawarra star, who hasn’t played a game for the Panthers since breaking his leg against the Titans in April, will auction off his 2008 Clive Churchill Medal at a retirement dinner later this year. Funds raised from the auction of the prized medal will go towards Spinal Home Help (SHH), a charity very close to Kite’s heart. “About a decade ago my cousin, who lives in Brisbane, had a surfing accident and became a quadriplegic. He heads up the charity Spinal Home Help,” Kite told Extra Time. SHH provides one-to-one peer mentoring support to people with spinal chord injuries and their immediate family
Brent Kite. Photo: Megan Dunn members. Support is provided as the client transitions from hospital through rehabilitation to living at home and reengaging with the community.
“My cousin has dealt with his injury really well while others in his position haven’t. He’s such an inspirational guy and it motivates you to help where you can,” Kite said. “I wanted to do something different that draws attention and thought having a charity retirement dinner would be a good idea to raise money.” Kite received his Clive Churchill Medal following a man of the match performance during Manly’s thumping 40-0 Grand Final win over the Storm in 2008. Kite said he was recently in touch with Clive Churchill’s widow, Joyce, to inform her of his intentions. “I got a hold of Joyce a few days ago and she was all for the idea. I hope to have her at the retirement dinner so she can pass on the medal,” he said. “Parting ways with it is no trouble because I’ll always be mentioned in the same breath as Churchill, who’s one of the first Immortals and greats of the game. “My name is forever linked with his and that’s a nice little thing for a guy who thought if he got to first grade he would’ve achieved all of his footballing goals.” Further details on Brent Kite’s charity retirement dinner on December 11 can be found at manlygoldeneagles.com.au.

UPSET OF THE SEASON AS LOWLY DRAGONS MINOR PREMIERSHIP RACE DOWN TO THE WIRE AS ROLL OVER THE TOP OF FINALS-BOUND PANTHERS FINAL ROUND OF THE NSW CUP GETS UNDERWAY Just weeks out from the Holden Cup finals and the Penrith Panthers have suffered a shock loss, going down to the second-last placed St George Illawarra Dragons 28-16. The 12 point defeat last Thursday evening at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium put a huge dent in Penrith’s minor premiership hopes with North Queensland leapfrogging them into top spot. The young Panthers didn’t look themselves throughout the 80 minute contest with the lowly Dragons appearing far more eager to get the job done. Penrith opened the scoring early through second-rower Corey Waddell but the Dragons hit back minutes later when winger Tom Carr crossed the line. With the Panthers continuing to give away dumb penalties late in the tackle count, the Dragons took advantage, scoring the next two tries to lead at the break 14-4. When both sides hit the field for the second stanza, it was the Panthers who got on the board first through Sam Elwin after the clever five-eighth snatched a spiralling bomb out of the hands of Dragons fullback Matthew Dufty to score besides the posts. However Penrith’s comeback didn’t

Neara’s conversion, Penrith led 16-10 with 17 minutes remaining. Penrith doubled that lead soon after when Harawira-Naera backed up a Daniel Foster line-break to score his first NSW Cup try and seal victory for the young Panthers. Penrith now turn their attention to the final round of the regular season with a home game against Illawarra. The Cutters will be no pushovers having already defeated the Panthers four weeks ago 22-18 but come into this clash with the likes of Eto Nabuli, Craig Garvey, George Rose and Mark Ioane not named. Nonetheless the Cutters have named an experienced team for the clash with the likes of Nathan Green, Russell Packer, Heath L’Estrange, Luke Page, Shannon Wakeman and Peni Botiki. In team news, Waqa Blake finds himself back in first grade with Chris Smith joining Malakai Watene-Zelezniak in the centres, while prop Sam Anderson returns to start. Pat Hollis, Josh Tangitau and Atonio Pelesasa (debut) have all been named on the bench, as Brent Naden, Corey Harawira-Naera, Oliver Clark and James Fisher-Harris have been recalled to Penrith’s Holden Cup side.

last too long, with the Dragons striking back with the next two tries to blow out their lead to 22-10. With 10 minutes to go, Penrith gave themselves a small glimmer of hope when prop Cowen Epere drove his way over beside the posts. Nathan Cleary’s conversion put the Panthers just six points behind. With four minutes left, it appeared as though Penrith had pulled off a miracle but Epere was deemed to have knocked on as he charged for the tryline. Penrith’s hopes for an eighth straight win were finally dashed with three minutes to go when Dragons prop Jay Gallagher crashed over to complete one of the year’s biggest upsets. The second-placed Panthers will battle the sixth-placed Raiders this Monday afternoon in chilly Canberra.

Penrith are still in the minor premiership race but will need results to go their way after holding the New Zealand Warriors scoreless in the second half to run out victorious 22-10 in Auckland. Wins to Mounties and Wyong ensure they enjoy a better for and against differential than the Panthers going into the final round before the finals and are highly fancied to win their last round games and keep Penrith in third spot. There was some mixed news for Penrith with Ben Murdoch-Masila (ankle) passed fit to play but Sam Anderson (wrist) was ruled out, which saw Holden Cup hooker Sione Katoa handed the captaincy. A double to Warriors hooker, Siliva Havili cancelled out tries to Penrith’s Waqa Blake and Malakai Watene-Zelezniak leaving the game in the balance at 10-all at the break. The second half, unlike a relatively mistake-free first half, had plenty of errors as both sides tensed up at the thought of not losing to their opponents. But after some concerted pressure by the Warriors failed to buckle Penrith’s tryline defence, the Panthers soon after broke the deadlock when half Sam Scarlett put on a show and go to fool the Warriors defence and with Corey Harawira-

alto is here! Have you ever felt that you’re so busy doing the things you have to do that you don’t have time for the things you want to do? It’s a trap that’s far too easy to fall into. Maria Gutierrez, a Sydney-based single mother of three and qualified personal trainer, founded Salto on the belief that it doesn’t have to be that way. Salto is a fun, creative, and challenging way to connect with like-minded people and get fit through a combination of highintensity interval training and rebounding. As the first company in Australia to offer this unique style of workout, Salto is attracting people from all walks of life. Why? Because rebounding has been clinically proven to be one of the quickest, most effective ways to lose weight, because it improves cardiovascular strength, lymphatic drainage, immunity, muscle tone, endurance and bone density – and because exercising on a trampo-

line makes you smile! “Many people make the mistake of focusing on their weight,” Maria said. “That’s not what it’s about, it’s about setting goals and reaching them. It’s about feeling confident and in control, it’s about being supported and accepted. “Most of all, it’s about rediscovering how beautiful, capable, and deserving you are. A healthy attitude shapes a healthy body.” From her personal experience as well as her work as an embryologist for many IVF clinics, Maria has observed first hand the spiral of isolation and depression that can come with motherhood, weight gain, and so many other challenges that life throws at us. The way you feel about yourself shapes the way you experience every aspect of your life. And sometimes all that is needed to transform that is a little motivation and support. Now is the time to create change for yourself, for your children, and for all those you hold dear. Love yourself fit! It all starts with Salto.

When was the last time you stretched?
Planning is important no matter how small you are

et’s face it, most of us are creatures of habit. We tend to gravitate towards the familiar and choose comfort over discomfort. And why wouldn’t we? It is the human condition to strive for happiness. But is it possible to grow and change for the better without stretching ourselves into new situations? But who wants to plunge themselves in the deep end in order to make a change? Actually, I don’t think you have to do it like that. And in fact, lasting, effective change is more likely to occur when change is gradual and measured. A few months ago I started attending AntiGravity Yoga classes (it involves performing a series of exercises inspired by yoga, Pilates, calisthenics and aerial acrobatics in a hammock-like apparatus). Aside from the great fun I’ve had hanging upside down, the progression that I’ve made in six months is amazing – not because I am actually that good at it! But because the stretching and small, progressive steps that are taken as you move through the class makes regular
improvement possible. What I am able to do today, I could never have dreamed I could do when I did my first class. This can apply to us in business as well. Let’s use reading emails as an example. Many experts say that it is better for productivity to read emails only a few times a day. If you are someone who looks at your mail program every time you hear the ‘ping’ of new mail, this might be a really hard habit to break! So rather than turn your notifications off altogether, you could decide that from 10am to 11am, you will close your email program. Each day, you can add one or two more times during the day where you are not responding to emails immediately. Eventually, you may be able to change your email program settings so that you don’t receive notifications for new mail, and schedule ‘email time’ for a few 15 minute periods throughout the day. Be assured that regular, habitual and purposeful changes, no matter how small, will eventually result in big changes.
T
o many business people, strategic planning is something meant only for big businesses. But it is equally applicable to small businesses. Strategic planning is matching the strengths of your business to available opportunities. The leaders of a business establish the vision of its future and then develop and implement the actions necessary to achieve that. To do this effectively, you need to collect, screen and analyse information about the business environment. You also need to have a clear understanding of your business, including strengths and weaknesses, and develop a clear mission, goals and objectives. It must all be realistic. This often involves more work and thinking than expected. Business owners need to be critical of themselves and be able to look at their own business from the outside to see chinks in their armour. Strategic planning focuses largely on managing environmental forces, which include competitors, government, suppliers, customers, various interest groups and other factors that affect your business. How you manage these and
other relationships is one of the decisions you will make during the strategic planning process. Today, many businesses face an unstable business environment. Improvements in information processing and technology have meant major changes in most industries. In addition, as consumers are exposed to more choices, loyalty has become less important than it once was. Competitors can also change rapidly, with new ones appearing very quickly. Not long ago, businesses could establish and maintain a business by reacting to changes in trends, and costs. However, today changes happen fast and come from many directions. Proactive planning is the anticipation of future events. Decisions need to be based on predictions as opposed to reactions to various occurrences. Planning plays an important role in any business. It can make the difference between the success or failure of your business. Being a business owner today takes constant awareness in order to be able to take advantage of new opportunities and the availability of new information as they come into being.

he first band I ever saw live was Thirsty Merc at the Hordern Pavilion during their 2004 tour with Maroon 5. The first band Thirsty Merc’s lead singer Rai Thistlethwayte remembers seeing was Midnight Oil headlining at The Domain in Sydney. “That was just a moment where I realised,” Rai said of the concert that finally pushed him to start playing with bands. “Ironically the next year I was already playing in pubs around Sydney and the Northern Beaches.” Flash forward a couple of decades and Rai is now the lead singer of Aussie rock band Thirsty Merc, who are most well known for their track ‘In The Summertime’ which has become the theme song
to the reality TV hit ‘Bondi Rescue’. “It’s sort of taken on its own persona,” Rai said of the track. “It definitely has helped keep the song in the psyche of people in the main population, especially in Australia.” Thirsty Merc will be heading out on a national tour next month in support of their fourth studio album ‘Shifting Gears’ which is set for release on Friday, September 4. The tour will see the band heading our way with a gig at Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday, October 1, giving local audiences a chance to get a taste of their new material. It’s been five years since their last release, but the time span between albums isn’t surprising considering Rai doesn’t like to set himself any limits when it comes to writing. “That’s always what I’ve done in Thirsty Merc, I’ve never tried to just think with the parameters there,” he said. “I just try and write songs and put the best material on whatever album I’m releasing.”
For this release the band decided to part ways with their record label and produce the album themselves. With money raised through crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic, they employed the skills of long time collaborator Lindsay Gravina to help produce the album and Grammy nominated Emily Lazar to master the record in New York. The crowdfunding gamble certainly paid off, with Thirsty Merc reaching their goal within 48 hours of the start of the campaign. During the release of Thirsty Merc’s anniversary album in 2014, which featured acoustic renditions of the band’s pre-existing tracks, the guys worked with MGM distribution, an independent distributor. It was this taste of life in the driver’s seat that inspired them to go independent on ‘Shifting Gears’. “We had a really positive experience working in that structure,” Rai said. “The album title ‘Shifting Gears’ is really about a change and also about being able to drive things manually.” It’s not just on this album that Rai
has had a taste of independence. Since 2009 he has also been working on a solo project, under the name Sun Rai, which has seen him record three EPs, ‘Pocket Music’, ‘Escargot’ and ‘April Skies’ which was released earlier this year. After spending time writing, recording and touring without his fellow bandmates, Rai has enjoyed being back with Thirsty Merc. “It’s been really fun,” he said. “There’s been a lot of old muscles that you’ve flexed again because you’re so used to it and there’s a nice sort of comforting familiarity with it. “But then there’s also been a big challenge with it because this has been the first full length album that the band’s put out 100 per cent independently. “So there’s been a lot of really exciting challenges that have been hugely inspiring on a organisational/business level as well as a creative one.” Thirsty Merc will be at Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday, October 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $30. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

during recent workshops. Baritone soloist Ed Suttle will be performing moving ballads like ‘Drake’s Drum’ and ‘Blow The Wind Southerly’ and will also be reciting the poems ‘Sea Fever’ by John Masefield and ‘Crossing the Bar’ by Alfred Lord Tennyson. To finish up the concert both choirs will join together to perform ‘A Drunken Sailor’. ‘Songs of the Sea’ will be on Saturday, August 30 at 3pm at Nepean High School. here are certain productions that are so popular they pop up on The Joan calendar every single year. ‘The Wharf Revue’ is one of those productions. The hilarious political satire show from creators Jonathan Biggins, Phillip Scott and Drew Forsythe is making its way back to The Joan this September for its Sydney premiere. With the current state of Australian politics there is sure to be plenty of laughs as these masters of comedy bring audiences up-to-the-second sketches that poke fun at politicians, community groups, celebrities and media figures. No one is safe from their satirical clutches. This year ‘The Wharf Revue’ will be celebrating their 15th – or possibly 16th birthday, they’re not entirely sure – with a trip down memory lane to look at the best of the 21st century’s celebrity and political embarrassments. Ê The Seven Network has announced it will live stream all three of their channels 24/7 from December 1. This is a huge development for the network and marks the first time a free to air channel has done anything like this in Australia. Viewers will be able to catch Seven, 7TWO and 7Mate live on their desktop, mobile and tablet for free at any time. You can get a feel for how it’ll work at 7live.com.au. Ê
It’s only been on for a matter of weeks but Channel Ten has already confirmed a second season of ‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee’. The ratings for the show haven’t been spectacular but it’s doing very well in the demographics, which networks care a lot about. Hosted by Grant Denyer and Chrissie Swan, the second season will go to air around this time next year.
Ê Those pesky boys from the ABC are back with ‘The Chaser’s Media Circus’ set to return for its second season next month. Season two will begin on Thursday, September 10 at 8pm, with appearances this season from Peter Greste and John Safran. Ê
The second block of ‘Open Slather’ episodes will begin next Sunday, Septem-
ber 6 on Foxtel’s Comedy Channel. The first 10 episodes of the local sketch series were very popular due to their great range of Australian and international celebrity guests. Before it went on hiatus, ‘Open Slather’ featured celebrities like Sting, Paul Hogan, Amy Schumar, Bill Hader and Hamish Blake. Let’s hope the next lot of episodes will be just as star-studded.
Ê Matt LeBlanc comedy ‘Episodes’ will return to Foxtel’s BBC First next month for its fourth season. The British/American series returns Monday, September 7 at 9.30pm. Ê Channel Seven and Foxtel streaming service Presto has announced it will screen ‘Home and Away: An Eye for an Eye’ during the summer months. The special exclusive production, which won’t air on Seven’s main channel, will centre around the Braxton family and will see the return of Dan Ewing (Heath) and Lisa Gormley (Bianca). This is obviously a very smart tactic by Seven to try and attract more people to subscribe to Presto. Ê Lastly, a ‘Flight of the Conchords’ movie is in the works. No word yet when it will be released though.

REVIEW W EI V E R MUSIC
DVD While We’re Young Rated M // KATE REID
‘While We’re Young’ follows middle aged husband and wife Josh (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts) whose lives are turned upside down when they meet and befriend a young couple, Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). The free spirited nature of the couple inspires Josh and Cornelia to explore new things and sets them on a new path. The focus of the film is on the generational differences between Gen X and Gen Y and while it could have an interesting subject matter, the ultimate conclusion seems to be that Gen Y are pretty terrible. The inconsiderate hipster Jamie is meant to encapsulate the whole generation when really he is just a
single example of a not so nice individual. The acting is great and the story has promise but at times it feels a little too much like an excuse to drag Gen Y through the mud. See it if you wish.

David Campbell
The Essential // KATE REID ‘The Essential David Campbell’ brings together the best tracks from his previous albums on a two CD collection containing a whopping 33 songs. The first CD takes listeners through the ‘Swing Sessions’ including David’s renditions of much loved hits including ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ and ‘Mack The Knife’. These tracks showcase David’s talent and the ease at which he slips into the classic music of times gone by. The second CD is titled ‘Favourites’ and includes Broadway hits such as ‘Luck Be A Lady’ from ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘All I Care About’ from ‘Chicago’ and ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’ from ‘Oklahoma!’ as well as a duet with his father Jimmy Barnes. This album covers some of the finest songs from some of music’s greatest periods and is brought to life by a singer who has the skills to do them justice.

If you thought the National Lampoon laughs were over, you’d be wrong. Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) has grown up and now has a family of his own. You can probably guess where this is going! His wife Debbie (Christina Applegate) and two sons James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins) all agree that they are bored after going to the same cabin for their family holiday every year. Rusty decides to recreate his childhood
vacation and take his family to ‘Walley World’. Just like the original ‘Vacation’ movies, the trip isn’t without its disasters along the way. There are so many good and funny things about this film that it’s hard to just name a few. The casting was done perfectly with Steele Stebbins as Kevin, a major standout.
His character definitely has the best of the comedic lines, most of which included picking on his older brother, that made for a good laugh whenever he was involved. Chris Hemsworth did a great job in his role as Stone Crandall and for someone I have never seen in a comedic role before, played it out really well. He even had a fake Texan accent which, I thought, worked in his favour. Rusty trying to be his son James’ wingman, the family in what they think is a hot spring, Kevin’s constant light-hearted picking on James, Debbie’s attempt at an old game from her sorority, the family going water rafting, and what happens when they actually make it to Walley World are all comedic gold. From the opening scenes to the end credits, you will laugh, maybe until you cry, with this comedy that stands on its own while also paying tribute to the original ‘Vacation’ movies. It’s one to watch, but with the cussing and nudity throughout the film, maybe leave the kids at home and make it a date night.

lthough they’ve been making wines in South Australia’s Clare Valley since the 1850s, one little village that’s particularly renowned for its Rieslings is Watervale – which all these years on, still has a population of under 250. Jim Barry Wines is virtually synonymous with Watervale and premium Rieslings, and their now-released 2015 Watervale Riesling is another example of why the team there has such a well-deserved reputation, albeit 2015 wasn’t exactly kind to them in many respects weather-wise. We’re talking about rain – firstly a lack of it, and then absolutely plenty of it, combined with unwanted extreme heat. But remarkably the vines came through well, and the 2015 Jim Barry Watervale is a great Riesling, with mouthfilling ginger and lime fruit flavours, crispy apple-like acidity and a nice varietal creaminess. Pay $18 and with Riesling being one of the most food-friendly of wines, match this one with anything from seafood to Asian, chicken, pork or vegetarian dishes. One to note: Voyager Estate in Western Australia’s Margaret River in 2012 had one of its warmest summers, earliest vintages, and highest fruit yields ever, and despite some challenges these threw up at winemakers, it’s released an exceptionally smooth and more-ish 2012 Girt by Sea label Cabernet Merlot (pictured). Something of an unexpected attention-grabber, this most pleasant drop has layers of dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit flavours, hints of vanilla, spice and nougat, fine-grained tannins and nicely integrated oak.

enrith RSL is one of the largest RSL Clubs in NSW with an energy bill to match. Like so many other clubs, Penrith RSL has a significant roof area which, until November 2014 was unused. After much investigation, Solar PV Commercial performed a site inspection that indicated the site was structurally and financially viable for a solar system. Solar PV Commercial offered a cost effective solution that met the Clubs financial requirements to invest into a project. This system generates 320,000 kWh a year, which equates to a $60,000 saving on energy bills. The 800 installed panels redirect all the sunlight that would normally hit 1,280 m2 of corrugated roof into clean electricity, this significantly reduces the heat transferred into the roof and air conditioning. Having a ball at Little Big Dash Last Sunday a sell-out crowd of 7000 parents and children took on the Little Big Dash at Sydney International Regatta Centre. The parent and child teams had a ball crawling, dodging, tumbling and rumbling through the 3km, 10 stage obstacle course. Australian cricket legend and Little Big Dash ambassador Brett Lee was also there to tackle the course. “The highlight for me would be watching the participants’ faces as families took on challenges together and lived in the moment with each other. It was a really rewarding experience, he said. Little Big Dash is designed to inspire parents and children to experience the fun and enjoyment that can come from exercise. Little Big Dash will return in 2016.

Your dad has feelings too! hile most mums can expect flowers, brunch and a thoughtful gift and card on Mother’s Day, the fact is that many of us shortchange our fathers when it’s their turn to be spoiled. According to research compiled by gift sourcing site Gift Guru, not only do more people buy gifts on Mother’s Day than Father’s Day, but when we do buy pressies for dad they’re not as thoughtful. So why do fathers fare worse on what’s meant to be their day of recognition? There could be a number of reasons according to Paul Mansfield from Gift Guru. “Men are notoriously difficult to buy for,” he said.

“We all know the last thing dad wants is another ‘World’s Best Dad’ mug, but when it comes to thinking of something special we’re stuck for inspiration. “Also, many of us mistakenly believe dads aren’t into all that sentimental stuff as much as mums and won’t be bothered if you remember to get them a Father’s Day present or not. But don’t be fooled, fathers have feelings too.” In fact, according to a study by psychology research institute Mindlab, men are actually more emotionally sensitive than women – they’re just better at hiding it. So this year, don’t be the one in 10 who forgets to wish dad a Happy Father’s Day, because deep down he’s a big softie who needs to know you care!

Local businesses get behind the fight against cancer
SPECIAL FEATURE
“I was eight-years-old when my brother was born and my mother’s instinct was that something was wrong. He was diagnosed with T-cell leukaemia. The more money that’s raised the more research can be done. More and more children are surviving and that’s not going to stop, that’s only going to get better. I wear a daffodil for my brother,” said Marta. Coles supermarkets and Coles Express are once again working with the Cancer Council to help raise millions of dollars for Daffodil Day. Visit www.daffodilday.com. au, phone 1300 65 65 85 or drop into Coles for more details.

You’re restless and keen for change, but are others ready for your ambitious Aries ideas? Don’t rush Rams – consultation and attention to detail will get you a lot further than being slapdash. And don’t let your vivid imagination get the better of you – especially involving a romantic relationship, health issue or work matter.

Expect a family matter or DIY project to go haywire this week! A pinch of patience will help you muddle through. Attached Bulls – your partner is looking to you for some sensible advice. Singles – you’re attracting a few admirers, but make them prove themselves before you ride off into the romantic sunset.
GEMINI
HOROSCOPES
Try looking at people and situations in a more considered way this week Twins. All is not as it appears [especially at home, school or work] so be extra careful in the way you give and receive information. A colleague or family member is enthusiastic about a project but make sure you check the facts before you commit.
Attached Virgos – you’re keen to pursue a particular course of action but is your partner on the same page? Singles – don’t accept someone’s dating profile as the gospel truth. Seek some substantial clarification before you proceed. This week relationships are far more complex than they appear.

Mercury is currently in Libra which boosts your natural talent for networking, negotiating and communicating. But remember Venus is still in retro mode [until the weekend] so making social connections and smoothing over problems will take more time than you think.

Is your killer Cat charisma failing to win over the masses at the moment? Fear not Lions! Venus stops reversing through your sign on the weekend, so you’ve only got a few more days of having to deal with a much less appreciative crowd [at home, work, school or socially]. Be patient – your time in the sun will come.
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
When it comes to school, university or work, this week you may swing between supreme optimism and debilitating selfdoubt as your confidence levels go up and down like a yo-yo. Don’t stress Sagittarius and quit focusing on what your so-called ‘competitors’ are doing. You need to set your own personal standards.

Crabs are capricious creatures and mood swings are likely this week, as you feel insecure. With Venus reversing through your self-esteem zone [until the weekend] comfort eating is a danger, as you strive to boost your spirits with sweet foods and calorie-laden treats. Try to employ some restraint Crabs!

The challenge is to let off Scorpio steam in smart and constructive ways, as you capitalise on the fiery Pluto power surge. Making brave changes in your personal life brings deep satisfaction. All forms of physical exercise are favoured, and passion and creativity are also highlighted.

You’ve got the power to move mountains this week. But you could become increasingly impatient with a loved one’s lack of initiative and accountability. It’s not the time to tell others what to do, so pipe down and concentrate on personal projects instead. Plus be careful when sending messages via social media.

Make the most of Venus reversing through your relationship zone as you reassess, resolve and rejuvenate a problematic partnership. You know what you need to do, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll do it! Mysterious motivations are driving you at the moment, so who knows what road you’ll end up on?

The ‘what-ifs’ may take over early in the week, as you question your actions and doubt your dreams. Neptune certainly sucks the wind out of your Piscean sails, and you may feel lost, dazed, disappointed or confused. But avoiding complex issues won’t make them magically disappear.

The saga also raises an interesting question here in Australia: how is our private information regulated online? The regulation of private information online is a grey area because the online world is boundless, so the next time you enter your personal information into a website, think about the following: • Typically the Privacy Act
1988, which sets out the rules of the storage and use of private information in Australia, only relates to websites based in Australia – if you are plugging your data into a foreign based website, chances are you aren’t protected by Australian privacy law • If an Australian organisation wants to collect data about you, they have to tell you, and disclose the purpose for which it is being collected • There are rules in place about data that is collected in Australia but sent overseas i.e. the entity collecting and sending the data must take reasonable steps to ensure that the use of that data complies with Australian law • You have the right to know what information private entities are holding about you and how that information is being used (e.g. Facebook) The biggest challenge faced by Ashley Madison members is that the Internet is forever. No amount of law suits is going to erase the information that is now floating around in cyberspace. The next time a dialogue box pops up, make sure you read it before you click ‘Agree’.

Stein HEALTH
There’s more to health than a bit of exercise now and then, people really need to become aware of all the other things that have an impact on our health. For instance, do you have a mobile phone? Men who keep a mobile phone in their trouser pocket could be inadvertently damaging their chances of becoming a father, according to a new study. Scientists at the University of Exeter have suggested that radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) emitted by the devices can have a detrimental effect
Could your mobile make you sick?
owner and manager of Fitec david@fitec.com.au
on male fertility. This study strongly suggests that being exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation from carrying mobiles in pockets negatively affects sperm quality. This could be particularly important for men already on the borderline of infertility, and further research is required to determine the full clinical implications for the general population.
The results were consistent across in vitro studies conducted under controlled conditions and observational in vivo studies conducted on men in the general population. And for women similar studies are being done on why women carrying phones in their bra may have higher incidence of breast cancer. Also scientists have called for more research into hair dyes and perming products to assess whether they contain a harmful substance. The comments come after researchers found that hairdressers had a high concentration of a type of carcinogenic chemical in their blood. Toluidines are supposed to be banned from European products, but the study found that hairdressers who apply light-colour permanent dyes or perform perms on their clients seem to be exposed to certain types of compounds. A paper, published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, examined samples from 295 female hairdressers, 32 users of hair dyes and 60 controls. They found that concentrations of proven cancer causing agents – ortho-toluidine and meta-toluidine – increased significantly with the weekly number of hair waving and permanent hair dyeing treatments.

Right now lawyers across the globe are licking their lips as the Ashley Madison hacking scandal unravels for the world to see. Ashley Madison is a website that facilitates affairs between married people. The website was hacked last month and the personal information of millions of its users stolen and published on the Internet. Disgruntled users of the website are now arming themselves with class action lawyers to sue Ashley Madison, particularly in Canada, where Ashley Madison is based.

McMillan PET HEALTH
With spring just around the corner, it is a great time to refresh your garden. We thought we would discuss some of the most common plants that are toxic to pets. We will be discussing two common plants that can be fatal if ingested. Lilies are often used in floral arrangements, however, many cat owners and florists are unaware that lilies are toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure. Indoor cats and especially kittens are drawn to flowers as they are a novel feature in a familiar environment.
Be careful of pets around plants
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
The toxic chemical in lilies that causes injuries to the kidneys is unknown but all components of the plant are toxic – this includes the petals, stamen, leaves and pollen. As little as two leaves or part of a single flower have been reported to cause death. Even a kitten mouthing a plant should be considered a potentially fatal ingestion. If you suspect your cat may
Call 8677
have ingested lilies it is vital that you seek immediate veterinary attention as early detection and treatment is vital. The prognosis for a full recovery is excellent if treatment is started before kidney failure develops. Another plant that is toxic in both dogs and cats is Brunfelsia – commonly known as Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow. This beautiful plant is very common in suburban areas and has violet, lilac and white flowers. This is perhaps the most toxic plant in dogs and is commonly associated with death. All parts of the plant are considered toxic, especially the fruit which drops after flowering. The toxins can cause seizures, paralysis/weakness and a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. This plant can affect multiple organs of the body and treatment of the animal can be challenging. One of the problems with this plant is that toxicity can take over 12 hours to be revealed and pet owners may not realise that the plant is the problem. If you have any questions about any toxins, please contact Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic on 4731 3055 or come in and see us.

is so hard to resist. Going into huge debt to build that dream house. There are so many ways people can lose their soul by pouring everything into what seems pleasurable and comfortable at the time – but at what expense? When the
My philosophy on food has always been that everyone has the right to decide what they eat. But I also believe that people need to be offered science based facts to help them to make informed food choices. With that in mind I thought I’d do a little nutrition myth-busting. MYTH 1: There is such a thing as chemical free foods This one is a particular pet peeve of mine. Quite often you’ll hear things about going ‘chemical free’ when it comes to food choices. Which on the surface sounds
Busting myths around food and nutrition

Jesus once said, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul?” In an episode of ‘The Simpsons’, Bart exchanges his soul for some momentary gain. It doesn’t take long for even Bart Simpson to realise how foolish this was! You cannot give anything in exchange for your soul! Yet isn’t this exactly what so many people are doing today? Trying to gain the world but in the process losing their very own soul? Working extra hours because the pull of extra money
kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
reasonable, who wants chemicals in their food? Well unfortunately these ‘chemical free’ statements conveniently ignore science 101 which states that everything is a chemical. Every food you eat, your own body, even something as ‘natural’ as water is a chemical compound. So going ‘chemical free’ is not possible, and it also assumes that every chemical is inherently bad which is
ancient Egyptian Pharaohs were buried in their tombs, which today we know as the pyramids, they were buried with their vast fortunes around them. The Egyptians thought the Pharaohs could use this wealth to make them secure and comfortable in the afterlife. It turned out, that all this wealth did was give opportunities for thieves to break in and steal the enormous riches! Jesus says the best way to provide for your future security and comfort is to give your life to him now, to follow him with all your heart, strength and mind. Jesus says, “Whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.” To give your life to Jesus means you will save your life. Don’t be like Bart Simpson selling your soul for what seems tempting at the time. Save your soul by living for the one who gave it to you – Jesus!
incorrect. MYTH 2: If a food is gluten free/dairy free/raw/vegan it must be healthy Visit any health blog or nutrition related Instagram account and you’re bound to find a gluten free/dairy free/raw/vegan dessert that is labelled as a ‘healthy’ or ‘guilt free’ alternative to a traditional dessert. Unfortunately these foods are still often quite energy dense, along with being high in fat and sugar. Which is fine in moderation, and if you enjoy the taste by all means go for it, but it’s important to understand that a chocolate cake, even if it’s gluten free, dairy free or raw is still a chocolate cake. MYTH 3: You need to eat less to lose weight Often people think that the first thing they need to do to lose weight is to restrict how much food they eat, which isn’t 100 per cent accurate. Healthy, nutrient rich foods are often less calorie dense than nutrient poor foods which means you can actually consume more of them. For example, the energy content of one chocolate bar is the equivalent of four apples. Making the best food choices means you won’t have to eat less, and may actually be able to eat more.

Swans show who really rules Sydney p.78
Ramettes want to bring it home The Penrith Ramettes are marching towards the semi-finals. Photo: Christian Triffitt NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
enrith Ramettes assistant coach Jennifer Brown is confident her side has what it takes to go all the way in this year’s AFL Sydney Women’s Division 2 finals. Brown, who is now the team’s assistant coach after having a baby three months ago, captained the Ramettes in the 2014 finals, and believes her side is in a good position to go one better this season. Last year Penrith made it all the way to the preliminary final before being bundled out by the Wollongong Saints 57-29. Brown said after a slow start to the
P
season, the Ramettes have really hit their stride of late. “We were certainly finding our feet during the first half of the year,” she told the Weekender. “Our start to the season was a bit disruptive due to rain and scheduling, and our squad featured many new players. “16 rounds on, those players are really starting to develop and I think we have a strong chance of at least making it to the Grand Final, if not potentially winning it all.” Last Saturday the Ramettes, who finished fourth during the regular season, played in an Elimination Final against the fifth-placed Blacktown Magic.
Despite losing to the Magic on both occasions this year, the Ramettes prevailed with flying colours, winning comfortably 65-23. “I wouldn’t say we did it easily but we were lucky to have a few of our key players back on board. When we played Blacktown earlier this year, both times we had players missing through injury and rep duty,” Brown said. “Everything just worked for us last weekend and to beat Blacktown quite convincingly puts us in a wonderful position leading into the rest of the finals.” This Sunday the Ramettes will travel to Henson Park to take on the UTS Shamrocks at 12pm.
The semi-final match-up will be a familiar sight for both sides who have met each other in the same fixture twice in two seasons. “UTS are strong but we’ve beaten them in the semis these last two years,” Brown said. “If we continue our wonderful streak, then hypothetically we should take the win out.” Gosford finished the season on top with Brown nominating the girls from the Central Coast as Penrith’s toughest competition so far. “Gosford are our main rivals this season. They were the minor premiers and we lost both times to them this season,” she said.

Football Wanderers win in Canberra and prepare for Shark attack NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
f their pre-season form is anything to go by, the Western Sydney Wanderers are shaping up to be quite the threat again this season after another excellent performance this week. The Wanderers took on Canberra FC in a friendly match on Tuesday night with the boys from the A-League far too good for their less experienced opponents, winning 3-0. The match, played in wet and miserable conditions at Canberra’s Deakin Stadium, also saw the official Wanderers debut of new Italian marquee striker Federico Piovaccari, and he didn’t disappoint. With the Wanderers already leading 1-0 thanks to a Mark Bridge strike in the 37th minute, it was Piovaccari who was next to do some damage just three minutes later. The Wanderers’ marquee forward managed to bag the club’s second goal of the night in spectacular fashion, which saw the visitors lead 2-0 at the break. In his 45 minutes on the pitch, Piovaccari showed exactly why he’ll be a handful for A-League defenders this season, utilising his size and ability at every chance. When players hit the field for the second half, it was Western Sydney who
I
continued to dominate the men from the nation’s capital. Moments after coming onto the field, lethal striker Brendan Santalab had an immediate impact, scoring a great goal in the 65th minute to cap off a brilliant night for the Wanderers. The strong performance, which also saw the club debuts of Spanish duo Dimas Delgado and Alberto Aguilar, puts the Wanderers in good stead for their Round of 16 FFA Cup match against the Palm Beach Sharks this Tuesday night on the Gold Coast. The Wanderers will go into the game, to be played a Cbus Super Stadium, as firm favourites to enter the competition’s next phase. Earlier this month, the Wanderers made the FFA Cup Round of 16 following a thrilling 1-0 win over the Brisbane Roar at Pepper Stadium in Penrith while the Palm Beach Sharks defeated South Melbourne in a game decided on penalties. Palm Beach are the current premiers and champions of the Queensland National Premier League, and boast defender Kristian Rees as their only player with A-League experience. The match kicks off at 7.30pm and will be streamed live on Fox Sports online this Tuesday, September 1.

Penrith duo secure Thunder contracts EXCLUSIVE: Best friends, teammates and now history makers as Big Bash League debut looms NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
wo best friends from Penrith are about to take their sporting careers to the next level after they were selected to be part of the very first Sydney Thunder Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) team. The Weekender can exclusively reveal that 21-year-old Naomi Stalenberg and 17-year-old Mikayla Hinkley have been confirmed as Thunder players ahead of the competition’s debut this December. Both girls, who play in Penrith Cricket Club’s first grade women’s team, said they were thrilled and shocked to learn they would be a part of Australian cricket history. “Not long after the Women’s Big Bash League announcement, I got a call from Thunder General Manager Nick Cummins who said he was interested in having me on the team – the feeling was incredible,” Stalenberg told the Weekender. “This is a huge step in the right direction for women’s cricket in this country and to be a part of it is outstanding.” Teenager Mikayla Hinkley was even more surprised to be selected in the team, especially considering her young age.
T
Penrith’s Mikayla Hinkley and Naomi Stalenberg join the Sydney Thunder
“Only being 17 I definitely wasn’t expecting to get the call,” she said. “I knew the WBBL was taking off this season but never did I think I would get the opportunity to sign with the Thunder.” Announced last month, the WBBL begins this December and will replicate the popular men’s competition with eight teams across six states. Both Stalenberg and Hinkley have always been big supporters of the male equivalent, often attending games each summer. “I’ve always been a big fan of the concept and have been to a few Thunder games in the past,” Stalenberg said. “I was definitely a big supporter of the men’s BBL and also went to a few matches. I actually follow it quite strongly every year that it’s on, so to be a part of it now is incredible.” The pair will begin training with their new Thunder teammates soon before their first game against the Sydney Sixers at Spotless Stadium on December 6. Best friends for years, the girls said they were grateful and over the moon to be able to share the experience together. “We both enjoy our cricket and for us to be in the team at the same time is just out of this world,” Stalenberg said.

Giants crushed by finals-bound Swans The dream is over: GWS will miss AFL finals after Swans show who rules Sydney NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
he GWS Giants are officially out of finals contention following an 89 point thrashing at the hands of the Sydney Swans. A win last Saturday afternoon would’ve kept the Giants in the hunt for their first ever finals appearance, but instead they were left embarrassed in front of their home fans, hammered by the Swans 133-44. It’s certainly been a year to remember for the Giants, who have won more games this season, with 10, than they did in their entire first three years in the league. However last Saturday’s huge defeat certainly brought the team back down to Earth. GWS coach Leon Cameron said last weekend’s crushing loss to their crosstown rivals reminded him of the Giants of old. “It’s just disappointing because we’ve come so far, we’ve taken huge steps forward this year… but we took about three or four steps back today,” he said. “Clearly we’re not good enough to make finals. I’m disappointed for the 20,000 fans that turned up. They had one side

who was competitive and one side who was not.” The Giants were never in the match with the Swans leading comfortably at every change. The eventual winning margin of 89 points was the Swans’ third biggest victory over the Giants, eclipsed only by the 129 point result in 2013 and 94 points in GWS’ debut year in 2012. Cameron was rather blunt with his assessment of his side’s lacklustre performance. “You can use any excuse in the book but the facts are when 44 ran out on the ground today 22 turned up and 22 thought it was too hard,” he said. “I think the players themselves are genuinely disappointed in what they have produced today because they know they are better than that. We know we are better than that.” The Giants will look to regroup and finish the season on a high when they take on the 17th-placed Carlton Blues this Saturday afternoon at Spotless Stadium. Following that they will travel to Melbourne on Sunday, September 6, to battle the struggling Demons in the final game of the season. The Sydney Swans sit in fourth.

Camden Cats 79-55 in the final round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. Ben McGovern, Lachlan Smith, Michael Denton and Daniel McDonald were best for the Rams with two goals each. The Rams finished the regular season in fifth position with six wins and 10 losses to their name. This Sunday at 3.30pm they’ll play the Moorebank Magpies in an Elimination Final at Blacktown International Sportspark. RUGBY LEAGUE: Former NRL star Beau Champion and rugby league legend Ronny Gibbs will play mentoring roles for the NSWRL’s Indigenous U16s Young Achievers Tour squad, for their history-making tour of Europe in November. The tour, which takes non-elite players from across NSW to France and Italy, is as much about social and cultural learnings as it is about rugby league. The tour is selffunded, with monetary support and resources provided by the NSWRL and KARI Aboriginal Resources Incorporated. Jason Edwards from Glenmore Park and Jake Gillett from Colyton were the only two locals to make the 34 man squad. t was a huge weekend for the Penrith Basketball Association with four teams competing in the Sydney Metro League Grand Finals, and two of them coming away with Division 1 premiership titles. The first of Penrith’s two premierships came via the club’s Division 1 U16 girls side who led the entire game against the Sydney City Comets for a very comfortable 77-48 victory. Panthers captain Binta Salawu was on fire during the game, showing off the incredible form that led to a role in this year’s Waratah Championship League women’s team. Salawu finished with 14 points and was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player. Other players who performed well included Chloe Bloom on 13 points, Tatiana Beaumont with 12 and Grace Kuypers with 10 points. Penrith’s Division 1 U16 boys team were next to hit the court, facing the Northern Suburbs Bears who were the only team to defeat the Panthers during the regular season. Penrith, however, quickly showed why they were minor premiers, leading 24-13 at the end of the first quarter before the Bears rallied to trail 36-32 at half-time.

Penrith’s Division 1 U16 boys team. Photo: Noel Rowsell (www.photoexcellence.com.au) In the weekend’s other Grand Final results, Penrith’s U16 Division 3 boys side were defeated 85-80 in double overtime by St George, while Penrith’s U12 Division 3 boys were beaten comfortably 57-40 by the Macarthur Heat. There appears very little doubt that Penrith’s future in basketball is bright.
Penrith again dominated in the third term to lead 63-50 at the final break before cruising home to an 88-67 victory. Penrith’s Lachlan Charlton was superb in winning the Most Valuable Player award and led the Panthers with 31 points, ahead of Zachary Cini on 16, Jasper Rentoy on 13 and Jake Zalac on 10 points.
