R

ussell Jolley and Kenvyn Davies love nothing more than enjoying a game of snooker with their mates.

But they are two of 54 members of the Penrith RSL Snooker Club that have been forced to search for a new location to hold their competitions, after Penrith RSL moved their snooker tables to a smaller room.

President, Martin Boston, said the move to a smaller space upstairs resulted in losing four of their six tables due to space restrictions.

“It doesn’t have to be six tables, four would have been ideal. With three we would have had to start our comps earlier, but we weren’t negative about it,” he said.

“Every game roughly lasts about half an hour... we can’t play a comp with two tables in one night.”

The snooker club would run two competitions, one on a Tuesday night from 7pm with around 20 people, and an over 55s competition on a Wednesday from 10am for older members who don’t want to be out later at night.

“A lot of these guys, they rely on it, they love it.

They come out one day a week to play snooker. I

have to tell them there’s not going to be a comp this week,” Mr Boston said.

Penrith RSL CEO, Neel Chand said the decision was not made lightly, but is in the best interests for the financial future of the club.

“We have to look after the whole membership, we have 36,000 members,” he said.

“We have started construction this week for Monkey Mania, hopefully opening November, and thousands of families will benefit from this.”

He said the decision was regrettable, but the decision made by the Board is “for the viability of the industry”.

The snooker club is searching for a new home.

Rate cut set to ignite spring market • Official rate at record low • Agents expecting activity • Banks hold back cut TROY DODDS

oney-hungry banks are withholding the Reserve Bank’s full interest rate cut from customers but real estate agents are still expecting a strong spring selling season.

The RBA cut the official cash rate to a record low 1.50 per cent on Tuesday, but most banks have only passed on a portion of the rate cut to customers.

Graham Cooke, Insights Manager at finder.com.au, said that a lower cash rate will make the cost of borrowing cheaper, but borrowers need to be proactive and seek out money-saving opportunities.

“A low interest rate landscape is attractive for home loan customers as variable repayments become more affordable, but don’t pay the lazy tax by being complacent. Pick up the phone and contact your lender to see whether it’s passing on the rate cut – and when,” he said.

A Penrith resident with an average $300,000 mortgage would pocket almost $50 per month, or a whopping $16,325 over the life of their loan, if their lender passed the rate cut on in full.

Cameron Faico, a real estate agent with Property Central in Penrith, said he expects the rate cut will spur home buyers and sellers into action.

“Anyone who is thinking of buying can now act with certainty as we move into the spring market.”

He said confidence is set to return to the market in the coming months.

“Prices have remained steady throughout 2016, mainly due to an under supply of available properties,” Mr Faico said.

“With interest rates being reduced I think this will also give potential sellers plenty of confidence to put their place on the market with the knowledge that there will be an even stronger pool of buyers looking to secure a home as we come into the warmer months.”

LJ Hooker CEO Grant Harrod agreed with Mr Faico, saying the property market is set to rise again.

“We’re now a month away from the peak selling season and the RBA’s move will motivate buyers even further,” he said.

“Most pundits thought Sydney and Melbourne’s price growth would slow over the year – especially over winter.

But very few anticipated the levels of new stock would be so low. There’s plenty of room in the market for sellers wanting to list now; more listings will actually bring greater levels of sustainability to the market.”

The RBA meets again next month and is expected to keep rates on hold.

And Managing Editor, Troy Dodds, has been nominated for the prestigious Hegarty Scholarship.

The scholarship was established in 1987 in memory of Patrick Hegarty, Executive Director of PANPA from 1983 to 1986.

It is a bursary of $10,000, used to finance an overseas study tour of any aspect of newspaper and/or digital operations.

The Newspaper of the Year Awards ceremony will be held on Friday, September 2.

t never ceases to amaze me just how willing the people of Penrith are to get behind a cause or show their support for somebody in need.

I may be bias but I reckon the Penrith community supports each other better than anywhere else on the planet.

Last weekend, a number of events that exemplify this community spirit were held in the local area and I wanted to dedicate some time and space to each of them in this week’s column.

Luke Priddis Foundation Ball Over 300 locals enjoyed an amazing evening of fun, food and fundraising for the Luke Priddis Foundation last Friday night at St Marys Band Club.

Councillors, sponsors, local businesses, parents and guests were treated to an emotional insight into the world of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

In the 10th year of the Foundation, Holly Priddis, alongside husband Luke and son Cooper reflected on the reality of living in an autism family. The highs, the lows, the tiredness and the achievements. An event such as this not only raises funds for the continued work of the Foundation but will this year assist in the completion of the Centre for Autism, soon to open in High Street, Penrith.

The night aimed to raise $40,000 to contribute to the cost of another year of domestic violence services, but fell short raising just $11,603.74.

That is unlikely to deter Michelle and I encourage everyone to jump online and do a little research into the Queen of Hearts Foundation.

When you do, you’ll begin to understand the enormous goals the Foundation hopes to achieve and what they need to get there.

Domestic violence is an epidemic in this country and while there’s been enormous steps forward in getting the issue out of the shadows, there is still so much to do and organisations like Queen of Hearts are doing a great job on the ground.

Nathan Pentecost’s push-a-thon This one is a little more in the ‘fun’ category but last Friday I lugged myself around the Sydney International Regatta Centre in a wheelchair to help raise awareness for Wheelchair Rugby League in Penrith, and Men of League.

While my arms certainly felt it after the 5km lap (which I admit, I shared with Michael Todd from the Western Sydney Business Centre and One Point Health), it was nothing compared to Nathan who managed to complete 100km around the Olympic venue.

Nathan is a passionate wheelchair athlete who is so dedicated to ensuring that disability means very little when it comes to taking part in sport.

He’s still looking for more funds to help purchase more wheelchairs for the rugby league team. Please contact us here at the paper if you’d like to help out.

olice are reminding everyone to ‘Stay Connected’ and that ‘Missing Persons Leave Frayed Edges’, for Missing Persons Week 2016.

Cranebrook local Cheryl Ardler has been missing since December 2012, with her last known citing in an alleyway near a bus stop on Geenhald Road, Cranebrook, with a man that was known to her.

In early 2013, Ms Ardler’s family reported her missing to police following concerns for her welfare.

In December 2015, three years after Ms Ardler’s disappearance, the government announced a $100,000 reward for anyone with information that might help find her and solve the mystery.

Police have been treating the now 44-year-old’s disappearance as suspicious.

Detective Chief Inspector at Penrith Police Station, Grant Healey, asked the community for help with the investigation when he announced the reward.

“Cheryl’s family are desperate to find out what happened to her,” he said.

“No one just disappears – if you have information, try and put context to it.”

The school has confirmed 15 large male kangaroos on the 40 acre property will be shot in the coming weeks, and as required by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the school has constructed a large grave at the back of the property to bury them.

The school has over 1,300 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, and Headmaster Mark Lewis said the culling will help manage the kangaroo population, but most importantly keep the students safe.

“Most of these kangaroos come through from the Orchard Hills RAAF base, and live on our site. We are talking predominately the large males that grow to around 5.5 feet and are potentially aggressive,” he said.

“There are a number that are here on a regular basis, they’ve come right outside my office and right outside the classrooms.”

Wildlife Service (NPWS) were called in to the school to assess the situation, and saw clear evidence to warrant a culling.

“There’s an over population and NPWS have given us a permit to cull,” he said.

“We are just following the process under the guidelines of NPWS. Shooting is done by a nominated ‘culler’ by the NPWS, and is someone outside of the school.

“It’s a requirement with NPWS that we actually bury them on site. We have a 40 acre property, so there’s a section up the back.”

Penrith Anglican College were also required to notify neighbours of the culling, that will be done over a sixweek time period and at night when no students are around.

Mr Lewis said neighbours have overall been supportive of the culling, that will alleviate a common kangaroo overpopulation issue in the area.

A spokesperson from the Office of Environment and Heritage confirmed NPWS issued the school with a licence under section 120 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act to undertake the culling of the kangaroos.

How Josh turned his life around From the streets of Kings Cross to helping others in need – asking for help changed one man’s life DALE DRINKWATER

ust three years ago, Josh Peterson had lost everything. He was an ‘ice’ addict living on the streets in Kings Cross, selling drugs and trying not to get robbed of the few possessions he had left.

Now, 31-year-old Mr Peterson is starting a full time job as the care taker of Christ Mission Possible’s temporary accommodation facility in First Street, Kingswood.

His first day is on Monday, and he will manage the facility that helped him out of homelessness when he was just 28-yearsold.

“I’m helping others now, other than needing help myself, and I’m helping the people that helped me,” he said.

Mr Peterson had a rough trot growing up near Bathurst, being sucked into a downward spiral with family heavily involved in drugs.

“My dad is a large scale drug dealer and I had to remove myself from that and move far away,” he said.

“I had nowhere to go and I was sleeping on the streets. I started in Kings Cross and it was a bit rough in there, people resorted to robbing others.

“I was on the streets for about two-and-a-

half weeks then the police recommended I get out of the area. That’s when I sought temporary accommodation.”

He started with Christ Mission Possible and with the care taker he is now replacing, and that’s when things started looking up.

He said his life has become more fruitful and prosperous, his relationships with people have become more positive, and he now has a girlfriend.

“My life in general has improved, I have regular access to my kids, my family situation has gotten better with my mum, my step dad and my sister,” he said.

“I’ve been in a relationship for about five months and it’s definitely going well.”

Christ Mission Possible was one of many services at the Penrith Homeless Hub on Wednesday at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, as part of National Homelessness Prevention Week.

The hub was a congregation of a range of services that help people get back on their feet.

Tackling Homelessness

New approach to ending our national shame DALE DRINKWATER

everal homelessness organisations in western Sydney have come together to pledge to stop managing homelessness – instead, they want to end it.

The new campaign launched on Tuesday, ‘Heading Home – Ending Homelessness Here!’, brings together the services of Wentworth Community Housing, Platform Youth Services, Mercy Foundation and Mission Australia.

Wentworth Community Housing’s CEO, Stephen McIntyre said it’s a very important position the organisations are taking this time around.

“We want to start a conversation about ending homelessness and our roles in achieving that,” he said.

“To end homelessness is distinct to managing homelessness. It takes a longer term view, our focus needs to be on sustainable long term solutions, and that is providing housing solutions.”

He said the organisations believe this is the first time such a disparate combination of people have come together to reach a homelessness goal in western Sydney.

The program will aim to find a house for every individual, keep in close contact

with other organisations and continue to develop the supply of affordable and social housing.

The program has attracted ambassadors such as Penrith real estate agent, Greg Taylor from Stanton and Taylor, and Member for Mulgoa and Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Affairs and Homelessness, Tanya Davies.

Mr Taylor said he came forward to show his support and give back to the community he was raised in.

“I saw a homeless man rummage through the Council bin behind our work,” he said.

“Watching that, it made me think about how everything I’ve always done has always been about me, what’s in it for me.”

Homelessness can come in many forms, such as rough sleeping on the street, car sleeping, or couch surfing, and can be a result of a range of social and economic factors.

Ms Davies revealed to the launch that she once spent months on a friend’s couch looking for work in Sydney, and didn’t realise it was technically a form of homelessness.

A disqualified driver busted parking a car has been let off with a warning.

Shazeb Allam faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with driving while disqualified.

The court heard Mr Allam had come to the rescue of his distressed girlfriend and was not actively defying his suspension.

“Next time she gets embarrassed about people watching her poor parking efforts – walk away,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell suggested.

He was ordered to enter a 12-month good behaviour bond.

A man who entered an emergency lane in order to beat banked up traffic, colliding with a car trying to access a driveway in the process, has been stripped of his licence.

Peter James Davies fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with negligent driving.

Magistrate Stephen Corry noted there had been “a lot of stops and starts” in his driving history.

“Ultimately it’s difficult to give you any leniency when you keep offending,” Magistrate Corry said in response to Mr Davies’ request for clemency.

His appeal was dismissed and a three month driving suspension confirmed.

Man to pay his ex $200 after burning her clothes

A scorned lover has been ordered to pay compensation after burning his estranged partner’s clothes.

William Denis Cross fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with destroy or damage property by fire.

“I just lost my cool,” Mr Cross said when asked to explain himself.

“I overacted pretty massively.”

Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said he was fortunate to get off lightly after crashing into the fence.

“You were very lucky, Sir, that no one was hurt,” she said.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said the defendant should be able to fall back on his lengthy period of good behaviour and noted the reading was at the bottom of low range.

“The court should recognise when someone effectively attempts to rehabilitate themselves,” he said.

He was ordered to enter into a 12 month good behaviour bond.

John Alexander Jansen has escaped a jail sentence despite pleading guilty to his sixth drink driving charge since 1991.

Penrith Local Court heard Mr Jansen had tried to overcome his alcohol addiction and his last PCA offence was eight years ago.

“My real concern is if he doesn’t address his problems he’s going to come back,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said.

“Either give up the grog or you’ll be going to jail,” he warned the defendant.

He was placed on a two-year good behaviour bond, ordered to accept Community Corrections’ supervision and had his automatic driving disqualification period extended to two years.

Drink driver escapes conviction

A father caught drink driving has narrowly escaped conviction despite pleading guilty to the charge.

Nathan Troy Hilaire faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with low-range drink driving.

The court heard Mr Hilaire was the sole breadwinner of the family and the outcome would be “quite catastrophic” should he lose his licence.

He was ordered to enter a two-year good behaviour bond.

Teenager keeps her licence

Alexandra Jade Adams has retained her licence despite a looming suspension.

The 19-year-old faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday in a bid for leniency after she was nabbed speeding.

Magistrate Stephen Corry allowed the appeal, noting she was detected travelling no more than 10km/h over the limit.

North St Marys: Double trouble for Oxley Park woman

A woman who was initially caught speeding by police in North St Marys on the weekend was later found to allegedly be a disqualified driver.

At about 4.15pm on Sunday, July 31, police were patrolling Forrester Road, North St Marys, when they allegedly saw a driver speeding.

Police stopped the 26-year-old Oxley Park woman and had a conversation with her. Checks made on her licence by police allegedly revealed she was a disqualified driver.

She was charged with ‘exceed speed 10km/h and over’ and ‘drive motor vehicle during disqualification period’.

She is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, August 15.

Kingswood: Cannabis found in woman’s handbag

A woman will appear in court next month after she was allegedly found with an illegal substance in her possession.

At about 10.40am on Saturday, July 30, police were patrolling Santley Crescent, Kingswood, when they had cause to stop a vehicle.

Police spoke with the 50-year-old male driver and the 43-year-old female passenger.

Police had cause to search both of them, where it’s alleged a small amount of what is believed to be cannabis was located inside the woman’s handbag.

She was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Friday, September 16.

North St Marys: Driver busted without licence

A man is due to appear in court later this month after he was allegedly driving using a suspended licence.

At about 1.05pm on Tuesday, July 26, police were patrolling Durham Street, North St Marys.

Cranebrook: Urn containing ashes found in bushland

A Hawkesbury Heights woman had her house broken into late last week, with her late husband’s ashes stolen. Just days later, the urn containing the ashes was found in bushland in Cranebrook.

At about 12.30pm on Sunday, July 31, a person attended Penrith Police Station with the urn they found in the bushland.

The urn and other property was stolen during a break and enter at the woman’s residence on Wednesday, July 27.

Penrith officers returned the ashes to the woman, on the day that was the anniversary of her husband’s death.

Inquiries into the break and enter are continuing.

Jamisontown: Man arrested over range of offences

A man was arrested and charged for a range of offences as a result of an ongoing investigation by police.

At about 4pm on Thursday, July 28, police attended an address in Bowenfels, executed a search warrant and arrested the man with the assistance of the Tactical Operations Unit.

One of the crimes the man allegedly committed was a break and enter in a block of units on York Road, Penrith, on Tuesday, June 26.

A number of items were seized in relation to that break and enter and a number of other matters.

He was charged with two outstanding arrest warrants, ‘break and enter indictable offence’, ‘drive while disqualified’, and was also charged in relation to a police pursuit among other offences.

For legal reasons we cannot name our clients, but here is the case study: • The deceased person died leaving four natural children and a defacto spouse. Three of his children were from his first marriage and were aged between 40 and 50 years.

These three children were our clients.

• The fourth child was the child of the deceased and his defacto spouse.

• Under his Will, the deceased left his whole Estate to his defacto spouse, completely disinheriting his children.

• We acted on behalf of three of his children to obtain a share of the Estate for them on the basis that the Will was not a fair distribution of the deceased’s Estate.

• The fourth child also made a claim against the Estate, as well as two other plaintiffs who were dependent on the deceased during their lives.

• All up, there were six plaintiffs all seeking a share from the Estate, and the defacto of the deceased person,

• We were able to obtain approximately 25 per cent of the Estate for our clients on the basis that the deceased should have left a share of his Estate to the children of his first marriage, not just his second wife.

• Settlements were also reached in relation to the other three plaintiffs to ensure that legal costs did not get out of control, and that the beneficiaries of the Estate received their share without having to spend it all on lawyers.

Council News Access Committee Penrith Council is committed to the inclusion of people with disability and to building a strong and equitable community. Council is inviting anyone who lives and/or works in Penrith City to submit an expression of interest for appointment to our Access Committee.

The Access Committee is a formal committee of Council which provides advice to Council about access issues and promotes the inclusion of people with a disability as full members of the community.

The committee includes Councillors and up to six community members who meet about six times a year and report back to Council. Appointment to the committee is for a period of two years.

Following the success of Council’s two previous Disability Action Plans, we want to respond further to the needs and interests of people with disability. Strategies and actions that will help in overcoming barriers to inclusion will be incorporated into Council’s planning for the next four years through the Penrith Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021.

Turning tragedy into triumph Queen of Hearts fundraiser aims to improve domestic violence support services in Penrith DALE DRINKWATER

ormer child soldier-turned international lawyer, Deng Adut, revealed his heartbreaking personal story to a captivated local audience last Thursday night at Penrith Paceway.

Mr Adut made a guest appearance at the Queen of Hearts Community Foundation’s Domestic Violence Prevention Fundraiser and spoke of a violent attack on his mother in Sudan just last week, before Australian aid saved her.

“My mother’s village was attacked and torched – she was robbed of all of her belongings,” he said.

“My niece disappeared, but my mum couldn’t leave because my brother was wounded... violence has been going on and on my whole life... but I’m no longer a victim, I’m a fighter.”

Angry, Mr Adut wanted to fly back to the war zone in retaliation, but decided to stay after being told his mother was rescued by an Australian living in the area.

“I paused and said ‘what good will come of me going there’... violence is dangerous,” he said.

“A perpetrator of domestic violence is simply a terrorist,” he said.

“It’s not about winning... you win a case and the next time you’re there it’s because she’s dead.”

Domestic violence takes more shape than just physical, and it’s why Queen of Hearts founder Michelle Ellery has been working so hard to ensure all women and children, even men, are safe.

The night aimed to raise $40,000 to contribute to the cost of another year of domestic violence services, but fell short raising just $11,603.74. However, Ms Ellery remains positive, and will continue to seek support from the community.

“It was a fantastic night with amazing sponsors, great food, exciting auctions and a wonderful emcee in Ross ‘Roscoe’ Hutchison. A big thanks to Penrith Paceway CEO Lorraine Pozza who provided an outstanding venue,” she said.

“We will continue to fundraise. We will ask the community to sponsor our social worker for a day at $350 a day, tax deductible, or ask any businesses that may also be interested in great branding opportunities by sponsoring our social worker.”

Free web access a boost to local area Visitors and shoppers to enjoy free public Wi-Fi thanks to new partnership between Council and Telstra DALE DRINKWATER

ocals and visitors to the Penrith area can now access free Wi-Fi at 19 locations across the city.

Speaking at the launch event last week, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown denied the free Wi-Fi was a response to the Pokemon Go craze, rather to ensure locals could do homework, find jobs and pay bills outside of their home.

“Having access to the Internet has become a fundamental part of modern life and this service will offer free Wi-Fi while people are out and about in Penrith,” she said.

Penrith is one of the first councils in the country to partner with Telstra Air and deliver free Wi-Fi in central locations.

“We’ve chosen key locations across the city including in the Penrith CBD, Queen Street St Marys and Tench Reserve among others,” Cr McKeown said.

“This initiative delivers on one of the action plans in Council’s Digital Economy Strategy to ensure the city is well placed to embrace its digital future.”

The Wi-Fi hotspots are delivered through a fibre network and will extend an approximate 50 metre radius to the

surrounding areas. The hotspots are located in High Street, Tench Reserve, St Marys Swimming Pool, Penrith District Netball Association, Emu Plains Regional Art Gallery, Cranebrook Community Centre, Regatta Park and Queen, Chapel and Station Streets in St Marys.

Those who login can access 30 minutes free, once a day, but Telstra Air and Telstra mobile customers will have unlimited access to the Telstra Air hotspots until March 27, 2017.

Telstra Head of Wi-Fi, Dan Kelly, said the partnership will help deliver a brilliant connected experience for local residents and visitors to the area.

“Wi-Fi is connectivity. It allows people to connect to the things they want to do without necessarily having to rely on their mobile data,” he said.

“The great thing about Wi-Fi is that it has a gravitational pull. You need to be close to it, so we can help bring people to the places where we want them to engage in community.

“It’s bringing that physical and digital together.”

The partnership with Telstra Air and delivery of services is not funded by Penrith Council.

ver 400 primary school students visited McCarthy Catholic College this week for a fun-filled learning experience.

Having had their students participating in a Formula 1 in Schools Program for a while now, McCarthy Catholic College decided to invite local primary school students to join in on the learning experience by hosting a Formula 1 Racing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event for the whole week.

Not only were students busy creating their model cars with gas cylinders to race at over 100km/h down a 26 metre track in the school library that’s worth $15,000, but the school was also lucky enough to secure a real Formula 1 McLaren 20022004 race car for the week, that originally cost $27 million to build with only three of that type ever made.

Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning, Michelle Deschamps, told the Weekender while it’s a great initiative, it’s all about skill sets.

“We are trying to help the primary students build their skill sets and then look at the way we integrate those skills in real life scenarios,” she said.

“It’s also about building relationships with the community.”

tudents at local Catholic girls school, Caroline Chisholm, have made friends and exchanged unforgettable memories with girls that live almost 8,000 kilometres away.

16 Japanese students from Tokyo Junshin Girls High School have attended the Glenmore Park-based school for the last two weeks, staying with local families as part of an exchange relationship between the schools.

Caroline Chisholm’s Japanese teacher, Leanne Smith, said a strong relationship

between the two schools has enabled visits back and forth since 2011.

“Tokyo Junshin has many parallels with our school – it’s a Catholic girls school, west of Tokyo and near the mountains,” she told the Weekender.

“The exchange creates meaningful lifelong relationships allowing for continued friendship, language, knowledge and skills exchange between our two countries.”

Whilst in town, students visited Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Muru Mittigar on excursions, and even headed next door to Glenmore Park Pre-school and sang songs to children.

Fantasy becomes reality for local quidditch club DALE DRINKWATER

hen J.K Rowling wrote about Harry Potter and his friends flying around on broomsticks chasing a golden ball in 1995, it’s safe to assume she never imagined it being practiced in western Sydney for competitive purposes.

Since joining the quidditch craze in 2012, the Western Sydney Quidditch Club has been training muggles (non-magic humans) in Kingswood to run around a field with a stick between their legs catching a ball attached to a yellow person.

While it sounds like child’s play, and is probably as fun, four Western Sydney players just dominated the game on a world stage, smashing the undefeated USA team at the Quidditch World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany, last month.

23-year-old Miles Sneddon captains the Western Sydney Spartans, and he and teammates Hannah Monty, Leslie Fox and Nicholas Allan were four of the 21 Australian Dropbears, who caught the gold snitch to win the gold trophy.

“Australia’s World Cup was a dream come true, being the first time the USA had ever been beaten,” Mr Sneddon told the Weekender.

“When [we caught the snitch] there was a triumphant dance party in the middle of the field, with almost every nation partaking, to celebrate the first ever American loss.”

Mr Sneddon said the Dropbears stayed neck and neck with America in quaffle points, leaving the game down to the Dropbears’ talented and committed team to catch the snitch.

“Preparation and depth of the squad proved to be the key for our success over the tournament. Our team was tall, physical and extremely fit,” he said.

The game is referred to as either ground or muggle quidditch, and is very similar to the game in the books with keepers, chasers, beaters and a snitch – an impartial person who wears yellow shorts with a sock with a tennis ball in the back.

If you are a huge Harry Potter fan like players on the Western Sydney Spartans team, you could meet up with them at training on Thursday nights or Saturday mornings at the Western Sydney University, Kingswood campus.

The team is a community team, taking players from outside the university across the western Sydney community and as far as the Blue Mountains.

Circus teen wants to take on the world JADE ALIPRANDI

ranebrook teenager Emma Lonard is ready to tackle her next adventure in the thrilling world of circus after competing in a festival in Russia.

The 16-year-old was the only act representing Australia at the Masters Junior International Circus Festival and managed to take home the award for Most Innovative Act, beating out over 100 other acts.

After taking up dancing at just twoyears-old, Emma moved onto circus at seven-years-old.

“Everyone is so friendly in circus and is always willing to help or give you feedback – it’s a really inspiring community,” she told the Weekender.

Taking up training at PAWS Studios in Penrith, Emma said she loves the environment.

“It’s like my second home really. I’m here from about 4pm to 9.30pm everyday and I teach as well – it’s just a lot of fun,” she said.

The Year 11 student was awarded for the Most Innovative Act after the judges saw her hang from an umbrella 20 metres in the air.

“The act is a collaboration between my circus coach and I, and the judges in Russia loved it,” Emma said.

“They said it was a cool idea and that it was different to a lot of the other acts they’d seen.”

eing ‘busy’ does not always equate to being ‘productive’.

Many business owners find themselves working long hours but feel like they are treading water when it comes to moving forward in their business or increasing profit margins. Perhaps the answer in many cases is to ‘work smarter not harder’.

A great deal of productivity stems from uncluttering your mind. If you are thinking of too many tasks at one time, you are likely to feel stressed and constantly busy. But there are some simple strategies which can help you be more productive: • Prepare for the next day: write down what you plan to do tomorrow, what you need to achieve, and even what you need to wear or take to the workplace. This clears your head before you sleep, giving your mind and body a better rest.

• Exercise: we all know regular exercise is good for your physical health, but it also gives you a clearer mind. Morning exercise can get you ready for the day, and later in

the day exercise can help you to unwind.

• Take time out: when you are a busy business owner, it can be easy to make business your whole focus.

Spend time on the little, important things, like playing with your kids before bedtime or catching up with a friend for coffee. Some people find that taking regular breaks throughout the day (for example, work for 30 minutes, break for five mins) also creates more focus and less strain on your brain (and body).

• Get up early: while this doesn’t suit everyone, there are many proponents of early rising (and going to bed well before midnight). People who do this tend to have more time to think strategically with minimal distractions and can get more accomplished in those two quiet hours when they are refreshed, than any other time in the day.

• Be tough when you prioritise: ensure that you are prioritising what ‘needs’ to be done, not just what you ‘like’ to do.

For those who are, you might wish to skip down to the third paragraph and start reading from there.

For those who aren’t, here’s a quick set up guide to getting your documents ready for tax, beyond putting your receipts in a box and giving them to an accountant.

If you’re doing that, then you’re paying a lot for a service that can be done cheaper, maybe for nothing, if you know what you’re doing.

The first thing you want to know is that the receipts you gather reflect the financial records of your business, and it is the basis on which tax is calculated.

You could simply put your receipts in a box, but before you do, consider entering them onto a simple excel spreadsheet where you can separate your receipts into columns to create categories for your transactions.

If you’re not computer savvy, then buy a cashbook from a stationery supplier and use that.

In a cashbook or a spreadsheet, the rows represent the transaction,

and the columns; the category. The categories should reflect those parts of the business you want to know about, including purchases, utilities, wages and so on. You might want to consider the following categories – Motor Vehicle, Travel Expenses, Wages Expenses, Office Expenses, Purchases (if you buy inventory) and Depreciation.

Theoretically, you should be spending 1/5 of your working week working on the business and part of that should include bookkeeping. If you don’t have the time to do this, then consider hiring a bookkeeper. They can transcribe the receipts, cashbook or spreadsheet into an accountant friendly program.

Even better, sole traders can use online accounting software that is Standard Business Reporting (SBR) ready. SBR means the software can talk directly to the Australian Tax Office without having to prepare hand written Business or Income Activity Statements, which will make reporting simple.

In addition, sole traders can use My.Gov to submit their tax and other business statements.

“It’s very smooth, a lot of our customers specifically come there for the coffee, but what really helps the coffee is the experience of our baristas, Rose and Laura,” Anthony said.

Mystery still surrounds the disappearance of Lynette Melbin in 1972

Whatever happened to Lynette?

M

onday, June 5, 1972 is a date that would send chills down the spine of many Penrith locals, especially the friends and family of Lynette

Ann Melbin.

Lynette, 15, was just 155cm tall with fair hair and hazel eyes, and was living locally with her family and twin sister.

Lynette was last seen hanging out with three of her friends at Penrith Plaza, where she went and told her mother at work that she was going home to get changed before

heading to her boyfriend’s house.

That’s when the teenager said goodbye to her mother at work, and was never to be seen again.

Lynette’s mother told TV show ‘Missing Persons Unit’ in 2006, that the disappearance of her daughter was out of character.

“When I went to pick her up she wasn’t there... She wouldn’t even go in the dark to put a bin out, let alone just disappear,” she said.

On the program Lynette’s father said when they first reported Lynette missing, it was hard to convince police she hadn’t just run away.

There has been no trace of Lynette since

that day and in 2006, 34 years after her initial disappearance, Lynette’s case was re-opened.

A witness who was a former member of the Penrith community came forward and said they had seen a person with Lynette in the weeks before she vanished, and that it was out of character for her to be with him.

The witness was very young at the time of Lynette’s disappearance and was under the impression that police had the investigation covered.

The case has since been suspended, and Lynette, who would now be around 52-years-old, has still not been found.

Remember when...

While the exact location is unknown, Penrith City Library believes it is possibly around the Mulgoa and Wallacia area, just south of Penrith.

There was a massive spike in the number of registered guns across the area that the Weekender investigated in our Friday, August 7, 2015 edition.

The biggest increase was in suburbs with the postcode 2749, that saw a 62 per cent rise to a whopping 3,452 guns, with other suburbs increasing by at least 32 per cent.

An Erskine Park man managed to climb 6,300 steps of the Sydney Cricket Ground in 59 minutes for the Stadium Stomp, twice.

And St Clair netballer Paige Hadley was warming up to play for the Australian Diamonds in the Netball World Cup. The Diamonds went on to win the World Cup, making Hadley a world champion.

T

he equation facing the Panthers is rather simple: win three of the remaining five games, and finals football beckons.

On paper, the task seems quite achievable – Penrith face just one side currently in the top eight on their journey home and play three of their remaining matches at Pepper Stadium.

The Panthers probably should have beaten the Warriors in Auckland last Saturday but lacked patience and composure throughout the contest and just couldn’t click into the gear needed to overpower the opposition.

The possible return of Te Maire Martin this weekend won’t necessarily add any much-needed experience to the Penrith outfit but it will allow Bryce Cartwright

to move back into the back row where he belongs – he has put in a fine effort at fiveeighth in recent weeks but I think most Penrith fans can admit the halves aren’t really his go.

The Panthers have already beaten the Roosters once this season on a cold and wet Monday night at Allianz Stadium, and face the prospect of similar conditions this Monday at Penrith.

Back then the Roosters were without chief playmaker Mitchell Pearce and while he has since returned to guide the side around the park, the fortunes of the Roosters haven’t turned around all that much – they sit second last on the ladder with their post-season trip already booked for early September.

The Roosters did however show what they’re capable of last Thursday by overpowering an out-of-form Brisbane, scoring some sensational tries in the process. The performance certainly sounded a warning siren to the Panthers and after last week’s heartbreaking slip-up in Auckland, there

is no doubt Anthony Griffin will have to re-focus his men with a ‘one game at a time’ attitude crucial given where Penrith’s precarious finals chances sit.

The message for Penrith should be somewhat similar to last week – patience. Too often against the Warriors the Panthers kicked early in the tackle count or tried to produce a miracle play close to the line that was never really on. It is a sign of a young and somewhat immature footy side but it’s up to the more experienced campaigners like Matt Moylan, Trent Merrin and Peter Wallace to keep the younger brigade calm.

While forwards tend to dictate games, it’ll be exciting to watch both backlines in action on Monday night.

Josh Mansour is a machine at the moment – 266 metres last week, two line breaks and two tries – while Tyrone Peachey seems more at home at centre than any other position on the field. For the Roosters, Blake Ferguson and Daniel Tupou are the obvious danger men while Dale Copley had a superb game last week.

This is a game the Panthers should win and most experts would chalk this up as one of the three matches the Panthers need to collect on their path to September.

But with such a young squad and inconsistency being the name of Penrith’s game all season, it’s a danger match.

If Penrith can start as well as they did against Brisbane a fortnight ago and not be forced into chasing points, they should do enough to get home. Tip: Panthers by 12.

With the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations continuing, the Panthers always planned to wear a 2003 commemorative jersey against the Roosters, who they defeated in the Grand Final that season. Penrith were one of the true pioneers of the Women in League initiative as far as kits are concerned, so I think we can excuse them for not taking part this year – especially considering how often they’ve worn the pink jersey over the last few seasons. » The Panthers have secured the services

of Bulldogs forward Tim Browne for next season. The club is yet to officially announce the deal but I’m told it’s signed, sealed and delivered. The 28-year-old, who has played 78 first grade games for the Bulldogs, was actually born in Penrith but played his junior football with the Raymond Terrace Roosters. The signing is a little strange considering the Panthers are jam packed with forwards for next season but perhaps there’s more pieces of this story yet to unfold. I checked in with Panthers HQ this week, but there was no official word forthcoming about the Browne signing just yet.

» With the right suit, Anthony Griffin

could pass as a very stylish hire car driver (or at least an Uber driver). That’s exactly what he was last week when it came to Panthers winger Josh Mansour, who lives just five minutes from Sydney Airport.

Rather than make his own way to the international terminal to meet up with his team mates to make the trip to Auckland,

Mansour was picked up by coach Griffin, who drove him back to the club’s rugby league academy so he could take the trip back into Sydney with the entire squad.

» Panthers youngsters Robert and George Jennings are both heading to South Sydney next season. It’s incredible to think that all three Jennings brothers, despite coming through the Penrith system, won’t be part of the club in the future, with Michael of course now playing with Parramatta after a successful premiership-winning stint with the Roosters. The Panthers don’t believe that Robert and George will be permanent first graders at the club and hence head to Redfern with the blessing of coach Anthony Griffin and boss Phil Gould.

» The Panthers have a new toy – Panthers on Messenger. The new initiative allows fans to ask the club about tickets, membership, merchandise and other issues on Facebook Messenger. We tested it out this week with some mixed results, but it’s another great step in communicating with the fans, something the Panthers have really excelled with this season.

» Panthers CEO Corey Payne and in-

spirational forward Trent Merrin were the guest speakers at youth networking group GenYQ last night. The Panthers have always been welcoming to the networking group, which is made up of young professionals in the Penrith area, and a good attendance was expected at Thursday night’s meeting to hear the duo speak.

» Nathan Cleary played well against the

Warriors last weekend but he could be forgiven for feeling a little star struck. The

18-year-old idolised Warriors star Shaun Johnson as a kid, and was even a ball boy for the halfback at one stage. Cleary posted a photo of himself with Johnson on social media after the game, saying it was “surreal” to play against his one-time idol.

» I’m told there is a little bit of truth in

the rumour that aired last week that there’s some creative differences between coach Anthony Griffin and the playing group. That is to be expected – Griffin is in his first year at the club and the playing group is getting used to their new mentor, who has a different style to previous coach Ivan Cleary. I’m told Phil Gould and Corey Payne are both aware of the situa-

tion but aren’t too concerned – both have been around footy long enough to know these things happen and it’s certainly not a serious enough rift that will cause any problems long-term.

» Sometimes bias commentary comes

from the most unlikely of places. If anyone heard Sunday afternoon’s call of the Newcastle / Manly game on ABC 702, you would have thought the broadcast was going to an exclusive group of Knights die-hards. We all appreciate that Newcastle probably isn’t getting the rub of the green at the moment considering where they sit on the ladder but the call was so one-sided, that I turned over to Triple M and listened to the AFL!

n-form Penrith Panthers prop Leilani Latu is enjoying one hell of a season, so much so that commentators can’t get enough of him – especially when he plays like a halfback weighing in at 115kg.

But despite his strong runs and excellent ball playing skills – which have the likes of Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns salivating – Latu always worries what his toughest critics will think when he arrives back home from a hard day at the office.

“I don’t take into account too much of what people are saying about me because I think my hardest critics are my fiancé and my parents,” Latu told Extra Time.

“They are very honest and sometimes I get a bit touchy of what they have to say.

“I take in what they say to me, rather than the commentators, and I try and improve each week.”

Latu, who made his NRL debut for the Panthers last season, has been so good this year that he’s now a regular fixture in Anthony Griffin’s starting line-up.

The 23-year-old said he owes his outstanding year thus far to his fellow teammates.

“My form this year has been based on what the players around me have done for me,” he said.

“If it wasn’t for their support at training

as well as the coaching staff, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Late last month Latu’s excellent form was rewarded with a contract extension that will see him remain a Panther until the end of 2020.

The former Canterbury Bulldogs forward wasn’t off-contract until the end of 2017, but couldn’t resist putting pen to paper for three more years.

He’s confident that something special is brewing at the foot of the Mountains.

“The future of Penrith is exciting – the culture, the brand,” Latu said.

“There are a lot of players here who have a great future in the NRL and, when the offer was put out there, I couldn’t think twice about it… it was awesome.”

Latu will be fighting for his starting spot next season when Sam McKendry returns from injury and James Tamou joins the club from North Queensland.

Latu and the Panthers will be looking to make up for their tough golden point defeat to the New Zealand Warriors last Saturday when they face the Sydney Roosters at Pepper Stadium on Monday night.

Penrith need to win at least three of their last five games to be assured of a top eight spot and a place in the NRL Finals.

“The morale of the team was a bit down after the Warriors game… the coach has a lot of trust in our attack but in defence, we need to tweak a few things,” Latu said.

“The Roosters have a monster pack and the majority of the battle will be in the ruck – I’m looking forward to it.”

xciting Panthers five-eighth Te Maire Martin says he isn’t sure whether he’ll play first grade on Monday night when Penrith do battle against the Sydney Roosters.

The 21-year-old made his long-awaited return from a serious shoulder injury during Penrith’s reserve grade clash against Newtown last Saturday afternoon.

Despite some confidence issues early Martin finished the game unscathed, with many predicting he’ll finally return to the NRL on Monday to partner fellow young half Nathan Cleary for the first very time.

However Panthers coach Anthony Griffin – a master of ‘ducks and drakes’ – has

once again named Martin in reserve grade to take on his former club Wests Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking with Extra Time on Wednesday, Martin said he wasn’t 100 per cent sure which game he’ll be playing in.

“I think I’m playing Saturday… that’s all I know,” he said.

“Hook asked me how I went on the weekend and how my shoulder was, and I said it pulled up well.

“He said I needed to get more strength into it because I still can’t lift what I was lifting before I got injured.”

Martin injured his shoulder during Penrith’s clash against Cronulla back in April. He was initially told by his surgeon he would be ruled out for the rest of the season but miraculously fortunes were with the young Kiwi and that wasn’t the case.

WHAT A THRILLER! Well as expected, the trip across the Tasman last week to play the Warriors was a massive challenge and an absolutely entertaining match, that saw both teams tied up at full-time and take the players into extra time as the rain too came from the heavens just in time for golden point.

Although not the result that the players were hoping for, how exciting was it for the fans to have the match decided on a golden try, rather than golden point!

Shaun Johnson’s try sealed the win for the Warriors and in some ways was a quite fitting end to what had been a great spectacle.

The Warriors have almost become used to golden point this season and whether they in some way mentally had the edge over the Panthers on Saturday as a result is hard to say, but Johnson’s try was enough to seal the fate of the Panthers

after a big week of travel.

With two golden point games last week, one ending in a draw, there is inevitable conversations being had about the future of the concept.

While it does add excitement to the end of a game, I understand the argument that a team that fights for 90 minutes and loses in the last seconds of extra time doesn’t deserve to walk away with nothing.

The serious end of the season is now here and the Panthers need to win three of their final five games, starting with the Roosters this Monday at Pepper Stadium.

I hope that there is a huge crowd to see the home match and see the Panthers take the two points up for grabs.

If the Panthers want to be playing finals football, they really need to win games like this one.

omewhere at Panthers HQ, a folder most likely with a fair bit of dust on it contains a playing contract torn into about 10 pieces.

The contract belonged to Mark Geyer.

It was filed away during a drama-charged period at the club in 1992 after Geyer had torn the contract up during a fiery meeting with then-CEO Don Feltis in the car park of Penrith Stadium.

Geyer had taken the death of Ben Alexander in 1992 particularly hard, but other issues were also playing a part in what was a difficult period for the big forward – including his relationship with Phil Gould, which had deteriorated significantly.

“Phil made it perfectly plain to me that it was either him or Mark and over a period of some time highlighted the negatives that supported his opinion,” Feltis recalled in the Panthers: Men in Black book.

And he’d even go on to appear alongside Gould on ‘The Sunday Roast’, with the pair having worked out their differences.

These days, Geyer is the club’s #1 ticket holder, and currently holds a number of media roles, including with Triple M’s breakfast show.

Whether that torn contract is still on file remains a mystery.

NRL touch judge Russell Turner

enrith local and long-time rugby league touch judge Russell Turner achieved an incredible milestone last Sunday afternoon when he officiated his 400th NRL game.

Turner, who has been running the line since 2001, notched up game 400 during the clash between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Canberra Raiders at ANZ Stadium.

Speaking with Extra Time, Turner said he never would’ve imagined reaching the enormous feat.

“Back when I started I had no idea I would ever do this many games,” he said.

Turner is currently one of the game’s longest serving NRL referees, and is among a small few who have been officiating professionally for 15 years.

Not only is Turner a weekly fixture in the NRL, but he’s also officiated State of Origin, Test matches and Grand Finals – all as a tough judge.

“I enjoy doing Grand Finals because they are a much bigger event and the build up lasts the whole week,” Turner said.

“My best memory would have to be my first State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium

back in 2006 – the atmosphere was unbelievable.”

Turner joined the Penrith Referees Association in 1988 and has been a valued member ever since.

He often returns to his roots to give back to young, up and coming referees in the Penrith area.

Turner isn’t sure whether he’ll reach game 500 but he’ll certainly try to.

“I’ve had this discussion with my wife but that’s up to the management of the NRL for how long they’ll have me for but, if I’m fit enough, I’ll certainly be hanging around for a few more years yet,” he said.

ou Goodwin, the country native from West Wyalong in regional NSW, has won ‘The NRL Rookie’ – and signed a one-year contract with the Canberra Raiders in front of a capacity crowd of 1000 people, in a live broadcast on 9GO! from The Star Event Centre in Sydney on Tuesday night.

“Lou’s strength, fitness and attention to detail in defence is second to none and he will be an excellent asset to the Raiders,” Head Coach Brad Fittler said.

Lou, the self-confessed “country boy with a city haircut”, was constantly referred to throughout the competition as the players’ player, the teammate you want to have beside you going into

every game.

Son of rugby league star Matt Goodwin, who played 108 games for the Penrith Panthers in the 1980s, Lou grew up living and breathing rugby league. He won the first three Captain’s Challenges, cementing him firmly as a top contender from the first week of the competition.

“This feels so surreal. I can’t believe it and I’m so excited to make the most of this opportunity with the Raiders,” Lou said.

The Panthers sent coach Anthony Griffin and former captain Peter Wallace to the live finale of the show, but the club opted not to bid for Goodwin’s services. It’s not known if ‘The NRL Rookie’ will return next year.

Only one try was scored in the opening 40 minutes with the Jets leading 6-0 at half-time.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the 15th minute before the Panthers hit straight back to lead 6-4.

New Zealand went on to score another

two tries before the break to lead at halftime 14-6.

When teams hit the field for the second half it was the Warriors who continued where they left off, pushing the score out to 20-6.

Not done with yet, the competitionleaders made a game of it, scoring the next three tries to take the lead.

The Warriors weren’t giving up without a fight, scoring the next two tries to hit back in front 30-22.

Penrith would score one final try with nine minutes to go but it wasn’t enough to keep the streak alive.

Try scorers for the Panthers included: Corey Waddell (2), Wayde Egan, Tyrone May and Jack Nelson. Jarome Luai kicked four goals.

Penrith will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on the third-placed Roosters this Monday.

hough country music icon Troy Cassar-Daley has spent decades on stage, guitar in hand, sharing snapshots of his life, the process of delving into his history for the book Things I Carry Around was a foreign and slightly confronting process.

“It was almost like stepping through a minefield when I first started to write it, because there’s certain stuff you’ve tucked away that you don’t want to remember,” Troy said.

“The first thing my wife said to me when I started writing the notes for the book was ‘just don’t think you’ve got to sugarcoat it to make people think you’re nice or something, because if things

weren’t great when you were a kid, you must talk about it’.”

With his parents separating when Troy was young he spent his childhood years between each side of his family; living with his mother in the country town of Grafton and spending holidays with his father in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills.

“Coming from a little town like Grafton, it was a big world in Sydney,” Troy said.

“But then I did yearn to get back to Grafton because I missed my little town and being able to run around barefoot and all that sort of stuff.

“It was a tight rope I think for a kid of my age spanning between two different cultures. I had my Aboriginal family up in Grafton and I had my Maltese family in Sydney.

“It was like you were almost two people for a while.”

As with any artist there’s a certain image people have of Troy Cassar-Daley,

but there are some events in the book that Troy believes his fans might find surprising.

“I’ve been writing about my life since the first album and this is my 10th album, so this book’s almost been semi writing itself in song but there’s a lot of things you make up, none of this in the book is made up,” Troy said.

“If I smoked drugs when I was young, I smoked drugs when I was young, that’s how it’s got to fall, I can’t really run from it. These are things in your life that people are going to go ‘oh I thought he was a nice guy’, well I am a nice bloke but I had a pretty wild youth.

“But I learnt from my lessons as a young bloke and I learned when I got to the cross roads to pull up and use my brain.”

It was a host of important people in his life, who Troy describes as his ‘champions’, that helped the little boy from Grafton decide which path he wanted to take in life.

The release of Things I Carry Around will be accompanied by a new album of the same name.

It’s a deeply personal release and, as with everything in his career, Troy has put his heart and soul into it.

“I’ve seen a lot of people put out albums with books and normally it’s just a bunch of b-sides that weren’t good enough to be on a record, but I wanted this to have the same power of the book, story-wise,” he said.

“I just wanted to make sure they were both as strong as they could be and I’m really proud of the way that it comes together as a unit.”

Troy Cassar-Daley will be performing an intimate acoustic show at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 2 at 7.30pm.

Blue Mountains residents and multiinstrumentalists Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth will be doing just that when they bring their show ‘Tubular Bells for Two’ to Springwood this month.

Together these two musicians will take on the mammoth task of performing Mike Oldfield’s 1973 album ‘Tubular Bells’ live on stage in this intricately choreographed piece that’s delighted critics around the world.

While Oldfield played almost all of the instruments on the album himself and then layered the recordings, ‘Tubular Bells for Two’ will see Aidan and Daniel perform every part of the album themselves.

With a frantic rush between instruments, and the risk of even a small mistake throwing the whole concert off, this is sure to be a unique and enthralling musical performance.

ccording to company history, St Huberts Wines, which was one of the first wineries in the Yarra Valley in 1862, was named after the Patron Saint of the Hunt, a 7th century English nobleman who turned a life of pleasures to one of helping the needy after confronting a magnificent stag between whose antlers hung a hauntingly shiny Cross.

And, the company adds, while the winery’s founder was a Mr de Castella whose first name also just happened to be Hubert, he chose to name his winery after the Patron Saint and not simply Hubert after himself. By the late 1800s it had grown to be the largest winery in the Yarra Valley, but after WWI and then the Great Depression it was turned to more-profitable dairying, which continued until the Yarra rose to wine prominence once more in the 1960s, with St Huberts again a pioneer.

Today this premium cool-climate maker is hailed worldwide, and a new label it’s just released and appropriately named The Stag, is fast winning praise from all quarters. In the film Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) leads a secret government agency known as A.R.G.U.S that’s given the task of saving the world, but there’s a catch; instead of the usual heroes the Suicide Squad is made up of some of the biggest, baddest supervillains, let out of incarceration to take on dangerous black ops missions in exchange for their freedom.

Symptoms of high blood sugar include increased thirst, appetite and urination. Over time an elevated blood glucose level or BGL can have lasting effect on the body, causing damage to your nerves and/or blood vessels.

Damage to nerves and blood vessels is non-reversible.

Damaging blood vessels means that your extremities such as your feet don’t get enough oxygenated blood therefore it takes much longer to heal an ulceration or infection. Nerve damage due to diabetes can cause partial or total loss of sensation in your feet, meaning you may be unaware you have a blister or wound on your foot. These wounds quickly become ulcers and if left untreated they can lead to serious infection and even amputation.

If you have diabetes, it is very important you have your feet routinely monitored by a podiatrist to avoid any ulceration coupled with routine monitoring of blood glucose levels. A podiatrist will be able to assess your blood flow using a Doppler ultrasound and your nerve reception level by isolating specific receptors through touch and documenting their individual receptiveness. Checking your blood glucose levels on a daily basis will also help your GP in the prescription of common diabetic medication control.

Adding to the list of reasons to pack your diet full of nutrient rich fresh produce is the results of a new study which found that a natural chemical in plants may help to halve the risk of insulin resistance in adults.

In the study, which followed 938 women and men, it was found that those who consume more phytochemicals, known as carotenoids, had a 49-58 per cent lower risk of insulin resistance.

These types of studies often inspire people to make changes to their diet.

Which is great, but unfortunately the first thing we tend to turn to is a boring, restrictive diet where we give

up all our favourite foods and spend days, weeks or months focused on nothing but eating ‘perfectly’.

It’s a pretty sad scenario, and research backs up this negative view of dieting with the majority of people who diet either regaining the weight or ending up heavier than when they began.

Instead of focusing on what we feel we ‘should’ cut out of our diets it makes more sense to focus on what nutritious foods we could be eating more of, like the humble vegetable.

Because they are less calorie dense and more nutrient rich, vegetables help to keep you feeling fuller for longer, avoiding the deprived feeling that comes with diets.

The best way to start is with small, easy changes.

For example, when you order a sandwich or a burger at lunch ask for extra salad or vegetables.

When making pasta add lentils, beans or chickpeas; or if you love smoothies add some green leafy veggies alongside fruit.

Flipping your view of healthy eating to what you can have is much more likely to lead to long term sustainable change.

Quick-fix diets simply aren’t the answer.

First recruits to new Giants team p.70 NATHAN TAYLOR

he new-look Western Sydney Wanderers surged back from two goals down to stun the Wellington Phoenix 3-2 in their FFA Cup Round of 32 clash at Campbelltown Stadium on Tuesday night.

The match was Western Sydney’s first official outing since losing to Adelaide United in May’s A-League Grand Final. It was also the first time fans were able run their eye over a number of new players in coach Tony Popovic’s line-up.

19-year-old Lachlan Scott was the star of the show bagging two goals on debut before Mitch Nichols won the game with a superb strike from 22 metres out.

After becoming the first Australian team in history to win a domestic game after facing a three goal deficit in last season’s semi-final against Brisbane, the Wanderers quickly found themselves in trouble after goals from Hamish Watson and new Phoenix signing Kosta Barbarouses.

Just when it looked as though Wellington may outrun the Wanderers, 19-yearold Lachlan Scott turned the match on its head when he bundled in a Steven Lustica cross at the back post.

From there the Wanderers took control, with the enthusiastic side going on a second half rampage.

Only three minutes into the second stanza and the home team were level as Scott grabbed his second when he tapped home a low cross from Mitch Nichols at the back post.

The comeback was complete in the 70th minute when Nichols fired a superb strike into the top right corner to put the Wanderers in front.

Coach Popovic said the slow start was to be expected as the side was short of match fitness and sharpness.

“I’m really delighted with how we came back and finished the game so strongly,” he said.

Popovic also reserved praise for young Scott, who scored 15 goals in 13 games in the NPL2 competition last season.

“It was a big jump for the young boy but he deserved his opportunity,” he said.

Offner said everyone worked hard to overcome the team’s dramas, which helped them qualify for the playoffs.

“I don’t think there’s one particular person you can credit – each person did their own bit and contributed in their own way,” the 20-year-old said.

“Hopefully we’ve found our feet now and we’re back in the motion of winning.”

The Panthers may have regained their form at just the right time with their Elimination Final against the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Spiders set down for this Saturday at Penrith Sports Centre.

For the second straight week the Panthers will play the Spiders, who got the better of them last Sunday 81-74.

“Both times we’ve played Hornsby it’s been a close game,” Offner said.

“The first time we played them we won by three points, and last week’s game could’ve been anyone’s… it went right down to the wire.”

Offner said Penrith will need to stick to what they do best this Saturday in order to avoid elimination.

“If we continue to work together as a team then we have a really good shot of taking it out,” she said.

From west to west: GWS Giants announce star recruits ahead of Women’s League debut NATHAN TAYLOR

he GWS Giants have announced West Australian pair Renee Forth and Emma Swanson as the club’s inaugural marquee players in the first National Women’s League to commence in 2017.

Following the recent appointment of former Sydney Swans AFL player Tim Schmidt as coach of the Giants women’s team, the club’s marquee players were unveiled at Giants HQ last week.

The duo comes to GWS with a wealth of experience and achievements as two of Western Australia’s best female footballers.

Forth has represented her state four times, captained Western Australia and currently leads the Coastal Titans in the WAWFL. The 29-year-old was drafted to the Melbourne Demons with pick 41 in the 2013 Draft and represented Melbourne in 2013 and 2014, and the Western Bulldogs in 2015 in women’s exhibition matches.

Joining Forth at the Giants is 21-year-old Emma Swanson who was first drafted to the Demons at just 18-years-old with pick 29 in the 2013 Draft.

She represented Melbourne for the past three years in women’s exhibition games and is a four-time state representative at senior and youth girls’ level.

Coach Schmidt said he was thrilled the pair had chosen to represent GWS in the inaugural National Women’s League.

“Renee and Emma are some of the top female footballers in the country which is why we’re so pleased they’ve decided to join the Giants for the 2017 season,” he said.

“In addition to their obvious talent

on the field, their professionalism and leadership off the field is first rate and they’ll help set the foundation for our new team.”

The Giants are one of eight sides in the new National Women’s League which is scheduled to start next year.

“We’re proud to be part of this historic new competition and signing Renee and Emma is another exciting step towards the commencement of the National Women’s League,” Schmidt said.

More players are due to be announced in the coming months.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers are now out of the playoffs race after a mixed weekend in the final round of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

Penrith hammered the Newcastle Hunters on Saturday 143-70 before going down in a tight one to the Inner West Bulls 78-68.

Penrith’s Sean Weekes top scored in both games, totalling 49 points across the weekend.

The Panthers finished the season in seventh position, just one win out of the playoffs.

NETBALL: Penrith junior Paige Hadley suffered another heartbreaking weekend after her NSW Swifts side went down in double extra time to the Queensland Firebirds in what was an epic Grand Final showdown.

After scores were tied at the end of the standard 60 minutes as well as 14 minutes of extra time, the match went into sudden death with the winning side needing to find a twogoal buffer to claim the 2016 title.

NSW junior Gabi Simpson took a crucial intercept to give the Firebirds possession, with the hosts finding the much-needed break to post a final score, 69-67.

It was the second straight Grand Final loss for Hadley and the Swifts, who also lost to the Queenslanders in the 2015 decider.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens Netball NSW Premier League team

were thrashed by the Manly Warringah Sapphires 69-52 last week.

Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s team have continued their winning ways, defeating the Sapphires 58-44.

Both teams will take on the Sutherland Stingrays in Round 14.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have now won 12 straight games, beating the North Shore Bombers 86-68 in Round 16 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Phillip Aumann top scored for the Rams with seven goals.

This Saturday afternoon the Rams will battle the South West Sydney Magpies at Rosedale Park.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Ramettes have bounced back into form with a 52-21 win over the UNSW Eastern Suburbs Stingrays in Round 14 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 1 competition.

Do or die for Panthers he Penrith Panthers Youth League women’s team will play an Elimination Final this weekend after qualifying for the playoffs in third position.

Penrith enjoyed a red-hot debut season in the Division 1 competition – winning 13 of their 20 games.

The Panthers led the competition for most of the year before injuries towards the backend of the season saw them battling for a playoff spot during the final weekend of the regular season.

Fortunately, Penrith managed to win one of their two remaining games in the final round to qualify for the all-important post-season.

Panthers captain and guard Dominika Offner said it was an enjoyable season that certainly had its ups and downs.

“I felt like we had some really good patches where we worked really well together as a team, but then we went through a patch where we lost our way a bit,” she said.

“We were leading the competition for nearly the whole season before a couple of injuries set us back.”
