Meet Cambridge Park’s Mr Christmas Spirit of Christmas well and truly alive thanks to Paul Mitchell and his incredible family-friendly efforts JADE ALIPRANDI

ambridge Park resident Paul Mitchell is continuing his tradition of spreading Christmas cheer in his community, after starting his light decorations over 17 years ago.

The 63-year-old and his wife have masses of people coming to their house from December 1 to December 24 every year to look at their light display and get their photo taken with Santa Claus.

Mr Mitchell told the Weekender it’s amazing how busy it gets.

“It’s especially busy on weekends and Christmas Eve is just nuts, but every night people come and look at the display – it’s just great to see,” he said.

“The retirement village buses come around too and I jump on them dressed as Santa and have a bit of a laugh with them and they seem to really enjoy it.”

Donning the Santa suit from last night, (Thursday, December 1), Mr Mitchell said it wasn’t always a big thing, but has grown over the years.

“We used to just do the Santa thing on weekends but it just got bigger and bigger, so now we do it right through December until Christmas Eve,” he said.

“The only reason I do it is to make people happy, particularly the kids – I wouldn’t do it otherwise.”

Over the last three years, the Mitchells have been using the Christmas display as an opportunity to raise funds for their five-year-old granddaughter’s school.

Catherine Sullivan Centre, based in Strathfield, is an early intervention centre for children with hearing loss.

“We’ve raised about $3,000 for them over the past three years,” Mr Mitchell said.

“The school’s been great for our granddaughter who is deaf, so it’s good to be able to give something back.”

Now in his early 60s, Mr Mitchell said taking the lights down on New Year’s Day has become a bit of a task for him and his wife.

“We used to do it in a day when we were a bit younger but we have to spread it out across a whole week now – it’s a bit of a process,” he said.

riving back from Wallacia last Friday, I noticed Santa Claus (or at least one of his well dressed helpers) standing on the side of Mulgoa Road, encouraging shoppers to visit the Penrith Homemaker Centre and get their festive season shopping over and done with.

It was all the proof I needed – not only does Santa exist, but he’s keen to make sure we do our shopping nice and early so we don’t get too stressed in those last few days before December 25.

Ever the news hound, when I was a kid I heard a whisper that Santa didn’t exist.

It was a scandal and I was onto the story first. My first exclusive.

I broke the news to my friendship group at school – they weren’t impressed and neither were their parents.

Thankfully, a few years later I was set on the right path and realised that Santa does indeed exist.

Sometimes, journos get it wrong.

It’s clear that Dr Kathy McKay, a social scientist from the University of New England, fell into the same trap as me, but has taken longer to realise the truth.

The academic turned grinch believes that children can be traumatised when they discover their parents have been maintaining the magic of Christmas with stories of a jolly, bearded man in a red suit.

“Morally, making children believe in myths such as this has to be questioned,” she wrote in a baffling review of the ‘lie’ of Santa published in the Lancet psychiatry journal.

Dr McKay claimed children were forced to “reconceptualise everything” when parents tell them Mr Claus is a “lie”.

The truth is, Santa does exist and in fact, he lives right here in Penrith. At least that’s what the good people of Cambridge Park tell me.

In this week’s paper, you’ll find a story about a bloke named Paul Mitchell.

Paul is 63-years-old and could probably spend his December relaxing, playing a bit of golf or taking a dip in the pool.

Instead, he dons his Santa suit and brightens the lives of people in the Cambridge Park area. It’s become an annual tradition in Pembroke Street.

Between Christmas lights, Santa Claus photos and the odd tasty treat, Paul’s efforts at Christmas are also about raising money for his granddaughter’s school.

Paul’s story is just an example of the wonderful spirit that exists at Christmas.

Can the academics just leave Santa and the wonderful feel of Christmas out of their rants and useless tripe?

And another thing...

NSW Premier Mike Baird did his best Santa Claus impersonation when he pulled his sleigh into Nepean Hospital on Monday and promised an upgrade worth more than half a billion dollars.

It is long-awaited and well-deserved news, but does raise many questions and serious concerns.

Like how both Labor and Liberal Governments over the years failed to predict or plan for the huge population growth that Nepean Hospital would have to service.

Mike Baird’s announcement on Monday is welcome, but Nepean should never be neglected for so long again.

special business luncheon was held in Penrith this week, with NSW Premier Mike Baird providing some insight into the Government’s plans for western Sydney’s economy.

Hosted by the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Uphire Business Matters Luncheon was attended by local business representatives from across western Sydney.

President of the Chamber, Gina Field, said western Sydney is just beginning to blossom.

“It’s a challenge for local businesses to continue to be competitive on not just a local level but a state and national level too,” she said.

“We are in a world-class mobile and business environment, and it’s exciting to get a glimpse of the future that lies ahead for our Chamber members.

“It’s about live where you earn and love where you live.”

Mr Baird added to that by saying the Government’s plans for western Sydney will see it reach new heights.

“There’s no doubt that western Sydney is going to be set up for generations to come – it’s an incredibly exciting time,” he said.

Penrith Councillor Kevin Crameri wants residential parking permits implemented Cr Crameri told the Weekender the residents are fed up.

“They can’t park their own vehicle on the street or anything and they’re complaining about it because of the restricted parking,” he said.

“They want to stop commuters parking across their driveways and in front of their houses.

“A simple Council approved sticker with the address of the resident on it will work as a residential parking permit.”

Mr Crameri said it should have been done from the start.

A report will be prepared and brought to Council in coming months.

Questions arise over dog attack arrest • Three people attacked in bloody night • Owner to front court again in January • Man can’t have dogs ALENA HIGGINS & JADE ALIPRANDI

he alleged owner of three dogs who mauled a police officer and two others at Penrith last Wednesday night has walked free from court.

Kirk Wake was granted conditional bail at Penrith Local Court last Friday afternoon after his Legal Aid lawyer, Matt Dimech, successfully argued against his continued detention.

Mr Dimech submitted police had no legal basis to arrest the 29-year-old on the night of the attack.

Mr Wake, who appeared by video link dressed in prison greens, pleaded not guilty to all sequences, including one charge of ‘intimidate police’ and three counts each of ‘failing to prevent a dog from escaping’ and ‘reckless behaviour that allowed a dog to attack and bite’.

The court heard the dogs, two of which have been described as American Staffordshire-cross-Pitbull in appearance, escaped through the front door of Mr Wake’s Parker Street home, triggering the bloody attack.

Peter Moon, 48, and Diane Christie, 43, sustained multiple severe bite wounds to their upper and lower bodies when they

were set upon by the dogs in front of their home about 7pm on November 23.

Constable Kim Hilly, who had been dispatched to the scene, was also knocked to the ground by two of the dogs as she walked along the footpath.

The 24-year-old suffered a dislocated shoulder and a bite wound to her calf that required surgery.

Inspector Kylie Koenig from Penrith Police said it was a traumatising situation for everyone involved.

“There were a number of witnesses at the scene, including a child, and it was traumatic for everyone at the time,” she said.

It’s also believed that police have previously had complaints about the dogs.

Mr Wake, who was on bail at the time for ‘stolen goods in custody’ – a charge he is due to defend shortly – was found in a “drug induced state” in his kitchen, according to police facts.

However, the court heard it was unclear whether this was due to illicit drugs or his lawful methadone treatment.

Mr Dimech told the court “one has to question” why Mr Wake was arrested.

“It wasn’t the case that [police] feared he wouldn’t turn up to court – his last warrant was some time ago,” he said.

“It wasn’t the case that they were unsure of his identity... or where he lived. He was arrested at his house.”

Magistrate Roger Clisdell agreed, saying he was “satisfied there is a real problem with respect to LEPRA” – the Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act. Under LEPRA, a police officer may arrest a person without a warrant if they suspect the person is committing or has committed an offence, and the officer is satisfied the arrest is reasonably necessary to prevent them from committing the same or another offence, to stop them fleeing, to establish a person’s identity, or to ensure the person will appear before court, among others.

Magistrate Clisdell took nothing away from the seriousness of the vicious attack.

“There is nothing worse than being attacked and bitten by a dog,” he said, but added the release application had to be looked at in the context of the Bail Act. “He’s not going to get those dogs back,” he said, before including a bail condition that Mr Wake not be in possession of, or have an animal at his premises, prompting Mr Wake to become visibly upset.

He is also to report daily to Penrith Police Station, continue his drug treatment and accept counselling.

Hospital upgrade a long time coming • $550 million promised to fix Nepean • ED upgrade to commence immediately • Opposition not happy JADE ALIPRANDI

hospital at breaking point, a Health Minister in an ongoing battle to keep her job and a Premier desperate to ensure Stuart Ayres retains the seat of Penrith at the 2019 election.

A perfect storm of issues combined to lead up to a major infrastructure announcement on Monday that will see $550 million spent on the redevelopment of Nepean Hospital to transform it into a state-of-the-art healthcare facility by 2021.

NSW Premier Mike Baird and Health Minister Jillian Skinner said the redevelopment will provide more services, beds and staff to serve the growing Nepean population and is in addition to a new $26 million car park.

“We are delivering the biggest hospital rebuilding program in the State’s history, with $5 billion worth of hospital infrastructure in the past six years and 10 new or upgraded health facilities opened this year alone,” Mr Baird said.

“The population of western Sydney is due to rise significantly in the next 20 years and our major investment will ensure we meet the healthcare needs of the region.”

The long awaited redevelopment will commence immediately with work to begin on upgrading the Emergency Department.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the hospital will be a world-class facility.

“The NSW Government is recognising that Penrith is one of the fastest growing areas in NSW,” he said.

“This redevelopment of Nepean Hospital will mean we can cater for more patients in a world-class hospital with more doctors and nurses.”

The State Government has been under immense public pressure to fix Nepean Hospital, which is in crisis and struggling to keep up with population growth.

The Opposition claims the upgrade only came after the Baird Government was “dragged kicking and screaming” by the community, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and State Labor.

“This announcement is only about saving Jillian Skinner and Stuart Ayres,” said Shadow Health Minister, Walt Secord.

Mr Ayres said it’s important to remember that the Liberals are fixing Labor’s mess.

“They had 16 years in office to fix it and did nothing,” he said.

The new-look hospital will include a new clinical services block, a new and expanded Emergency Department, expanded and upgraded medical imaging, at least 12 new operating theatres, 18 birthing suites in new accommodation, a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, more than 200 overnight beds in new accommodation, a new helipad and new community health services.

With those stinging words, Federal Lindsay MP Emma Husar delivered her verdict on the Nepean Hospital upgrade announcement.

Ms Husar claimed that NSW Premier Mike Baird and State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres had been “shamed into reheating the same old announcement”.

“Their small token comes only after years of neglect, excuses and inaction by the NSW Liberal Government,” Ms Husar said.

“Our community has been demanding a real upgrade for almost six years. In that time, day after day, we have seen the human cost of the Liberal Government’s total indifference to health and hospitals in western Sydney.

“What the Baird Government announced today was a rerun of the same upgrade they promised before the election but still haven’t delivered.”

Ms Husar is concerned that the State Government isn’t taking into account Penrith’s rising population in terms of future planning.

Man given benefit of the doubt over motorbike incident

A Llandilo man caught riding his motorbike down his street without a licence has had his court case dismissed.

Edward Vella was sentenced at Penrith Local Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to the charge.

The court heard the 39-year-old was attempting to protect his “most prized possession” by re-homing it to his neighbour’s house after becoming “suspicious” that his ex-partner’s new boyfriend would try to steal it.

His lawyer asked Magistrate Stephen Corry to accept it was the only time he had ridden the bike, which normally takes pride of place in his games room.

Magistrate Corry said aside from any fines he would be liable for, the defendant would have been personally responsible for damages suffered had anyone been injured as the bike wasn’t insured.

While accepting his version of events and the fact he only drove a very short distance, Magistrate Corry still labelled it a foolish decision.

“Mr Vella, it was silly of you to drive the bike,” he said.

“It was unregistered and you didn’t have a bike licence. I hope it goes back into the house and revives its career as an ornament.”

Graffiti vandal hit with fine

A magistrate has expressed his desire to make a graffiti vandal pay by scrubbing off his “artistic endeavours” with a toothbrush.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Brendon Hage he wished he had the power to order him to clean up his mess as punishment for the crime.

“I know what I’d like to do; give you a toothbrush to scrub it off, but I can’t do that, unfortunately,” he said.

He told the offender the only thing he could do was to “hit you in the hip pocket” as a reminder not to commit the offence again.

He was stung with a $750 fine and ordered to pay $250 in compensation to Penrith City Council.

“That’s a full week’s work down the drain,” he said.

“Don’t be a fool again.”

Good behaviour bond after woman caught hitting child

A woman sprung hitting a child across the head has been handed a nine-month good behaviour bond.

Moira Foster fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday where she pleaded guilty to common assault.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell asked.

“It’s a book as well, I suggest you read it. It shows how things can blow-up, like what’s occurred here.”

He said there were other law-abiding ways to physically discipline a child, but they were restricted to areas below the back.

“Don’t hit kids on the head,” he said.

“You’re allowed to smack them on the bottom or slap them on the hand, but not around the head.”

Magistrate not happy with man’s excuse for no-show

A man who failed to turn up to court and was convicted in his absence has been refused an application to have the judgement set aside.

Lance Pearce told Penrith Local Court he had no means to attend court on October 18 because he didn’t have a licence, but a deadpan Magistrate Ian McRae wasn’t buying it.

“You live at St Clair,” he said.

“Correct,” Mr Pearce replied.

“That prevented you from coming to court? You didn’t think about walking to the train station?”

“I did, but I didn’t do it,” Mr Pearce said.

“If that’s your attitude you’ll be dealt with by way of sentence today,” Magistrate McRae said.

When Mr Pearce protested, saying

he was pleading not guilty, Magistrate McRae said he would have to lodge an appeal.

“You’ll have to lodge an appeal if that’s the case,” he said.

“You were convicted in your absence and I refused your Section 4 application.”

The court heard Mr Pearce has previously failed to attend court in September and a warrant had to be issued for his arrest.

He was slapped with a seven-month suspended sentence.

Extended time off the road after driving while suspended

Daniel Michael Dennis will spend Christmas behind bars and likely miss the birth of his child after failing to comply with his community service obligations.

Mr Dennis faced a no-nonsense Magistrate Ian McRae at Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

“You realise you were lucky to get a CSO instead of full time jail,” Magistrate McRae said.

Mostafa Abdulrahman has been stripped of his licence for a further two years after driving while suspended.

The 20-year-old fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after he was nabbed attempting to move a courtesy car off the Great Western Highway.

The court heard Mr Abdulrahman was a passenger in the car when the driver was pulled over and found to be an unaccompanied learner.

His lawyer told the court his client was under the assumption the driver was on their P’s, adding he only moved the car because he didn’t want to leave it on the side of the highway.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said there was no doubt the defendant knew he was suspended, and reminded him under no circumstances should he get behind the wheel of a car.

“If you’re suspended, you’ve got to stay out of a motor vehicle until you’re suspension’s finished,” he said.

He was convicted and fined $400.

Magistrate Ian McRae sentenced Damien Gibbons to four months in the slammer last Thursday, despite Mr Gibbons insisting he was acting in self-defence.

“You threw him to the ground and punched him three times, saw his eyes roll back into his head and punched him another two times,” Magistrate McRae said.

A uni student busted with alcohol in her blood after drinking the night before has been handed a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Tenille Delkou, 20, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with lowrange drink driving.

The court heard the P2 driver, who also volunteers, had consumed four or five glasses of Shiraz before failing a random breath test on the Great Western Highway the following morning.

Werrington: Ice pipe found during vehicle search

A 40-year-old Silverdale woman has been charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ after being allegedly found with ice (methamphetamine) in her bag.

At about 11.45pm last Friday, police were patrolling Railway Street, Werrington where they sighted a vehicle on the side of the road.

Following a conversation with the driver and passenger, the vehicle and occupants were searched by police.

It is alleged the woman’s handbag contained a glass ice pipe and a number of resealable bags, one of which contained an amount of white granules.

She will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, December 15.

Jamisontown: Money stolen during pizza shop robbery

Police are investigating the circumstances following the robbery of a pizza shop on Monday night.

At about 10.30pm two employees were in the process of closing the York Road business when two men entered the store with their faces covered.

One of the men was armed with a large machete.

Both began yelling at the two employees demanding money from the till and one of the men jumped the counter.

The staff handed over the night’s takings and the men fled the scene on foot.

No one was harmed.

Police attended the scene but were unable to locate the men.

CCTV has been recovered and the crime scene has been examined.

Detectives from Penrith would like to speak with anyone who may have information that could assist investigations.

Werrington: Man and woman arrested over break-in

A Werrington man and woman are set to face court after being arrested in Cranebrook last week.

The couple are alleged to have broken into a residential dwelling on King Street in Penrith on Tuesday, October 11, where substantial property was taken.

An amount of property was seized from Cranebrook.

Both were charged with multiple offences including ‘aggravated break and enter’ and ‘commit serious indictable offence in company’ and ‘goods suspect of being stolen’.

The 41-year-old man was given conditional bail and is set to appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, December 14.

The 39-year-old woman was also given conditional bail and will appeal in court on Thursday, January 19.

Penrith: Woman to face court after defacing cop shop sign

At about 12.40am on Monday, November 21, substantial damage was occasioned to the Penrith Police Station sign.

The ‘P’ and the ‘O’ on ‘Police’ were coloured out with black marker.

Following enquiries, Penrith detectives issued a court notice to a 51-year-old Penrith woman.

She has been charged with damage to property and will attend court on Monday, December 19.

St Marys: Police searching for answers after vehicle fire

Police are appealing for information following a vehicle fire in St Marys last week.

At about 11pm on Tuesday, November 22, the NSW Fire Brigade responded to a call about a vehicle on fire at the corner of Princess Mary Street and Sainsbury Street.

Fire personnel arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.

They considered it to be suspicious in nature and reported the incident to St Marys Police.

The vehicle sustained minimal damage.

Police are urging anyone with information to call 1800 333 000.

Major changes to strata laws in New South Wales New strata laws will come into force in New South Wales in November 2016.

The motivation behind the reforms is to modernise the laws so they reflect the needs of people who own strata townhouses or apartments in the modern era.

Strata refers to ownership by a person or entity of a portion of a property, with the rest of the property being known as the common property.

Each strata plan is different, but traditionally an individual owner will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the interior of their unit and things like appliances, furniture and general wear and tear.

All of the owners will be jointly responsible to look after the common property and the condition of the buildings themselves, including things like driveways and gardens.

Interestingly, approximately 25 per cent of the New South Wales population lives in strata accommodation, so the changes do have an impact on a large number of us.

Some of the important changes include: 1. Adopting modern technology to conduct meetings, for example, electronically.

2. A requirement that by-laws be reviewed annually to make sure they are compatible with the lifestyle of the owners of the units within a complex.

3. Allowing tenants to participate in strata meetings.

Extra parking for festive rush Penrith residents will be able to take advantage of an extra 275 car park spaces from this week, provided in an attempt to ease congestion at Christmas time.

Penrith Council and the Penrith CBD Corporation are boosting the number of temporary parking spaces available in the lead up to Christmas in a number of areas in the community.

The northern end of Penrith Paceway will have 100 extra spaces; behind Woodriff Gardens Tennis Courts will have about 130 spaces; and Council’s Civic Centre Car Park will have an extra 45 spaces made available.

Penrith Mayor, John Thain, said Council wants to make life easier for shoppers during this time of year.

“The CBD Corporation and Council have made arrangements with Penrith Paceway to make the parking area within the Paceway, at the northern end adjacent to the pool, available,” he said.

“Penrith Paceway is only 500 metres to High Street, so within easy access to Penrith shops.”

The additional parking is a combination of all day and timed car spaces.

elief for commuters parking at Penrith Train Station is just around the corner with temporary parking arrangements well on the way.

Construction began on the new multideck commuter car park last week as part of the upgrades to Penrith Station, with parking set to be a nightmare for commuters while the work was carried out over the next year.

However, on Monday night, Penrith Council passed a report to have work start on Lot 3003, 3004, and 3005 along Lord Sheffield Circuit in Thornton, to act as a temporary car park for the next 12 months.

Penrith Mayor John Thain told the Weekender it’s been a group effort.

“It’s been in the works for quite a few weeks,” he said.

“Council has been working with Penrith MP Stuart Ayres and Urban Growth to find alternative arrangements while work is carried out.

“I think it’s good for the community that we can actually compensate for parking that’s lost and also get a few extra spaces out of it too, so it works out well.”

Cr Thain said work on the temporary car parks should start soon.

The zone is now a shared space.

Husar hopes her story helps others After an emotionally charged speech in Parliament, Lindsay MP hopes she can make a difference JADE ALIPRANDI

wo days after her emotional speech in Parliament, Federal Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar, held an afternoon tea to mark White Ribbon Day. Last Wednesday, November 23, Ms Husar stood and told her emotionallycharged story of her years of experience with domestic violence. Her speech has garnered widespread national attention.

On Friday, she stood in front of a crowd of 30 people at her Penrith office to mark the start of 16 days to take action with White Ribbon Australia, and to thank everyone for their support.

Ms Husar said she was overwhelmed by the support from everyone.

“I’m incredibly grateful and had absolutely no idea that it would take off like this; it has taken me by complete surprise,” Ms Husar said.

“I’ve got many people disclosing things about their own lives to me now, which is pretty difficult to take in and for them to talk about.”

Unsure she could go through with the speech, Ms Husar said she felt incredibly sick just before she rose to speak at about 3pm last Wednesday afternoon.

Reserve to be named in memory of much-loved St Clair doctor JADE ALIPRANDI

t Clair doctor, Liz Torrance, will be remembered by the community with a special memorial to be dedicated to her at a local reserve.

Dr Torrance died on August 24, a day before her 62nd birthday, from aggressive brain cancer.

On Monday night, Penrith Council moved a report to have the reserve bounded by Feather Street and McIntyre Avenue in St Clair renamed as ‘Dr Elizabeth Torrance Park’.

The report recommended that an application be made to the Geographical Names Board (GNB) for official gazetting, which may take up to six months.

Councillor Greg Davies said he was happy with the outcome.

“It’s great that Council was able to move quickly because it takes a while to get it approved by GNB,” he told the Weekender.

“It’s definitely well deserved and ensures that her memory will live on in the community.”

Dr Torrance served the local community for 32 years and was diagnosed with her condition just months before her passing.

Cr Ben Price added that Dr Torrance was always there to help.

Cr Davies said she won’t be forgotten.

New tracker reveals big problem for St Marys and Colyton locals JADE ALIPRANDI

t Marys and Colyton are among a number of western Sydney suburbs considered to be ‘obese’, the latest national health report card reveals.

According to the latest results, St Marys tops the list of suburbs with the most obese number of people.

New digital platform ‘Australia’s Health Tracker by Area’ was launched last week, hosting a series of maps and filters which provide localised data on chronic diseases and their risk factors at the local government, primary health network, population and state level.

CEO of Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, Lizz Reay, said the health tracker is a great tool to have for health professionals.

“I think it’s really good actually,” she told the Weekender.

“One of the advantages for us will be the common measures being tracked across Australia; it lets us look at where we are doing well and where we aren’t doing so well.”

The tracker includes obesity, high blood pressure, cancer screening, early deaths by chronic disease and suicide rates.

Local pioneering aviator, William Ewart Hart, created history 105 years ago. This occurred when aviator Billy Hart was presented with Australia’s First Flying Certificate by the Australian Aerial League of Australia on December 5, 1911. Council’s ambitious push for 55,000 more local jobs by 2031

NRMA concerned with number of babies and pets left in vehicles

enrith Council has adopted a report for the Economic Development Strategy (EDS), providing a strategic framework for how to best support economic development in the Penrith region.

A report will now be brought back to Council outlining the details of the expert panel in terms of its proposed composition and operations.

The EDS provides Council with target sectors for jobs growth and areas of focus to stimulate economic development across the city.

“The goal for Penrith is to achieve an increase in total local jobs of up to 55,000 by 2031,” the report states.

“Alongside the jobs, we must also encourage greater housing and lifestyle choices to attract professionals and skilled workers.”

The key achievements listed in the

report when it comes to transforming Penrith include the Penrith Progression blueprint, Penrith Health and Education Precinct, investment facilitation in the region, and the New West marketing and promotion model, which has been rolled out in recent times.

The report, compiled by Economic Initiatives Coordinator, Tanya Jackson, outlines Penrith’s differences to other locations, which is considered a positive when talking about economic development of the region.

“Penrith’s location, land, infrastructure, increasing diversity and strong leadership are key points of difference and an opportunity to activate economic development,” it reads.

“To achieve a more sustainable economy, we need to work with business, industry, the community and government to reduce the gap between the job supply and demand in Penrith.

“The Economic Development Strategy identifies the way forward.”

most widely circulated newspaper in Penrith, with 58,135 weekly copies.

ith temperatures expected to swelter this summer, the NRMA is reminding drivers that leaving children and pets in locked cars can have potentially devastating consequences.

In the past year 2,243 babies and 1,655 pets were rescued by the NRMA from locked cars in NSW and the ACT. Shopping centre car parks were the most common site of rescues, totalling one third of all incidents.

Other common rescues occurred in community areas like beaches, parks or hospitals.

NSW Roadside Manager, Robert Younes said it was never okay to leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, despite how quick you think you might be.

“Leaving the window partially open is no solution as it won’t stop the temperature rising inside the car,” Mr Younes warned.

Over the past year it has taken the NRMA an average of less than 14 minutes to arrive at the scene of a locked car with a baby inside.

However, in some instances, that time is just not quick enough.

It can take less than five minutes for a child to develop heat stress and start to

Rotary members show support for families in need at Christmas

New oval at Jordan Springs aims to promote an active lifestyle JADE ALIPRANDI

ordan Springs residents enjoyed their new 5.5 hectare village oval playing fields last weekend during a family fun day out.

More than 500 locals flocked to the new fields last Sunday, playing games with family and friends and enjoying local entertainment.

Lendlease General Manager of NSW/ ACT Communities, Arthur Ilias, said parents are looking for ways for their children to participate in outdoor, active play.

“Research commissioned by Lendlease found that 87 per cent of Australian parents believed playgrounds, parks and outdoor spaces are the most important amenities to have within their neighbourhood,” he said.

“Parents are looking for outdoor places where their children can play, where family and friends can get together, and where they can strengthen their ties with the community.”

Mr Ilias said families can enjoy the space for a range of activities.

“From picnics on the grass to kicking a footy with friends, the playing fields offer residents and the community a great opportunity to spend more time outdoors,” he said.

t Marys Rotary Club have played Santa’s helpers to give a helping hand to the local community.

The Rotary Club members have continued their annual tradition and busily put together hampers of food and essentials to help the Salvation Army in the lead-up to Christmas.

“Christmas each year has always meant there is pressure on family budgets,” Rotary Club President, Cheryl Deguara said.

“Being able to provide these Christmas

hampers with essentials as well as some sweet items will help some of these families through a tough time.”

Members assembled at the Salvation Army Hall in St Marys and have so far put together over 30 much-needed hampers.

The Rotary Club will be providing additional hampers as well as toys from the staff at Goodman Fielders.

The Salvation Army’s Major Nellie Moed said it’s a much appreciated token.

“The generosity of the Rotarians in this time of need will help us through,” Major Moed said.

The hampers will be distributed in the St Marys area in the middle of December.

Families enjoying the day last Sunday in Jordan Springs “The space is designed to be enjoyed by the entire local community with flexible recreation spaces that can offer a range of sporting and leisure activities, including basketball, netball, gym and Parkour circuits.”

The Jordan Springs Dads’ Group also raised more than $2,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with a community barbecue and show bag sales on the day.

The Village Oval is one of the largest outdoor areas in Jordan Springs.

It also has a learn-to-ride bicycle circuit and two off-leash areas for pets.

Friends take on a mighty challenge ‘Team Penrith’ hard at work preparing for Oxfam’s 100km Trailwalker event in 2017 JADE ALIPRANDI

ne in three people live in poverty but a team of four from Penrith are determined to help change that in any way they can.

Team Penrith are participating in Oxfam’s 100km Trailwalker next August and are asking the community to get behind the cause.

Locals Natasha McConnachie, Hardeep Saini, Brianna Redmond and Sarah Harris have hit the ground running after starting training last month as well as their fundraising efforts.

“We’d love to be able to get to $5,000,” Ms McConnachie said.

“It’s about helping some of the poorest people in the world to get fresh water and get their crops growing on their farm to get them food.”

But the four participants are also taking part in the Trailwalker event to challenge themselves.

“We also wanted to do it for the mental challenge and to keep ourselves on track with health and fitness – we’ve never done anything like this before, so it will be a big challenge,” Ms McConnachie said Participants will trek over a 100km trail

In 2017, Oxfam Trailwalker will take place in Australia, India, New Zealand, Spain, Japan, France, UK, Belgium and Hong Kong.

Globally, the events have raised more than $210 million for Oxfam’s work in support of people living in poverty around the world.

The team have been vigorously training at InPursuit Gym in Penrith with their trainer Bree Agliaro.

The training program will continue over the next 12 months.

“We’ve been training for a month and will train right up until the event,” Ms McConnachie said.

“You don’t sleep and you barely stop as you have limited time – it’s just going to be massive but so worth it.”

ingswood resident Hannah Reimer has beaten out a group of dancing’s rising stars to take out the Outstanding Female Dancer award at the recent Sharp Short Dance festival.

The 17-year-old choreographed and performed a lyrical dance to the Ed Sheeran track ‘Shirtsleeves’ for the event, which showcases the talents of dancers and choreographers under the age of 21.

“It was an interpretation of the literal words in the song,” Hannah explained of her piece.

“It was about giving your all to somebody only to have them not feel the same way.”

This year’s event, which was held at Riverside Theatres in Parramatta, featured 45 choreographers and 114 dancers who performed short, new and innovative dance works.

It was a tough field, making Hannah’s win all the more satisfying.

“I was a bit surprised, I wasn’t really expecting to win but it was an honour,” she said.

“There was a lot of really good competition, a lot of great female dancers.”

“The young artists who presented works in this year’s festival were some of the most impressive I’ve seen,” he said.

As for Hannah, her focus for the future is to finish her schooling and then pursue dance training and a career performing on cruise ships.

“Being able to travel and do what you love at the same time, that’s what interests me the most,” she said.

ocal Londonderry author, John Peter Borgatti, has had his debut science fiction novel published.

His book Time Paradox was released on Thursday and tells the story of a time travelling technician in a world teetering on the brink of nuclear disaster.

The novel, which took almost four years to write, was a wonderful way to combine his passions with his love of writing.

“It was a lot of work. But, when I do something, I like to do it properly,” he said.

When he turned 17, Mr Borgatti joined the Royal Australian Air Force where he spent 15 years serving the country.

“I saw the skyhawks flying when I was younger, and they inspired me,” he said.

Mr Borgatti was always fascinated by the stars and aeroplanes, which encouraged what he describes as a gnawing feeling to write.

His love of space and the unknown has existed for as long as he can remember.

“My family bought me a telescope to look up at the stars. They thought I was crazy, but we’re all a little bit crazy,” he said.

Mr Borgatti’s novel aims to encourage readers to question how we think about time, exploring the possibility of being able to travel both forward and backwards in time.

“Science Fiction writers romanticise time travel, it is an imaginary reality. But is it really imaginary? We all know that Science Fiction does become Science Fact,” he said.

Mr Borgatti migrated from Italy to Australia as a child and grew up on the south coast of New South Wales.

He has lived in Londonderry for the past three to four years, and said that he loves the local community.

Mr Borgatti is thankful for the opportunity he has had to write and publish this story and has already begun writing a sequel, with the possibility of a third in the series.

Lions ready to sell Christmas trees Emu Plains Lions Club is spreading the holiday spirit by selling freshly cut pine trees just in time for Christmas.

Between 6.30am and 11.30am on Saturday, December 10 at Lions Park, Great Western Highway in Emu Plains, fresh trees will be on sale for $35.

All proceeds will go to Our Community Cares, a local organisation that aims to support Penrith’s aged, needy and those undergoing medical support.

The club orders the trees from Oberon and this year they will receive 80 trees.

Later the same day, the Lions Club will be seeking gold coin donations for car parking at the Emu Sports Club in Leonay where Carols on the Course will take place.

The evening will also include a jumping castle, a bar, a visit from Santa and a traditional Lions BBQ where again, proceeds go to Our Community Cares.

The organisation currently aims to increase the level of patient care in the outpatient services of Nepean Hospital and assist the needy and aged.

used to think that the key ingredient to having a successful business was having a great idea. After starting my business nearly 12 years ago, I continued to come up with new ‘side’ ventures, thinking that I just had to find the ‘next best thing’. Some of these ‘brainwaves’ had some small successes.

But about three years ago, I came to the realisation that I was already doing what I do best – I just needed to find better ways to do it, to suit my goals and aspirations.

At the time, it wasn’t a particularly positive thought process! I felt a bit deflated and regretted the time, energy and resources I had put into those ‘big ideas’. It felt like I was admitting defeat and that I was now playing it safe.

But about six months after this realisation and decision, I began to see a big difference in my bank account. Without even ‘trying’, the fact that I was now single-minded in my focus increased my profit. It was quite startling! I was able to see that giving my full attention to my core business increased my productivity and ability to see opportunities when

they came along, instead of trying to ‘create’ them.

I also realised how many valuable lessons I had learnt through these ventures: I was more confident in my abilities; I had expanded my network and contacts in the local community; I had less fear of stepping out and trying something different; and, I understood better that ‘ideas people’ don’t necessarily make for good leaders in business.

Through this process, I also learnt to say no more often to the energy-sapping requests, and am now able to better seek out the more positive opportunities.

Combined with this was learning to ignore the sceptics – those people are usually the ones who don’t have the fortitude to do what you are doing, so ignore them!

Above all, after nearly 12 years in business, I can safely say that a key to being a successful entrepreneur or business owner is resilience.

Even if the goal posts change, even if things are really tough, the ability to bounce back and push on is vital.

n a recent broadcast of ‘Q and A’ on the ABC, Melbourne journalist, Grace Collier, suggested that one way to find a job was to start a business. And at the Western Sydney Business Centre we see a lot of individuals who want to do just that.

They come to us with an idea and we help them assess the merit of that idea.

But even before then, you need to realise that running a small business is not a guaranteed cure to finding a job.

The statistics related to start-up businesses are not encouraging.

A report issued earlier this year by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that of the businesses starting in the 2011-2012 period, over a quarter of them failed in the first year. By the end of the third year, half of those new businesses had folded.

So how do you avoid this fate?

By assessing the feasibility of the product/service as it stands in your intended market. This means talking to people, letting people examine your product or experience your service. To assess your feasibility identify the costs of running the business and add them

to your costs for living – e.g. groceries, clothing and health. If your business is capable of covering the total then it is financially feasible.

But is there a market out there?

Look at your product/service and determine who is likely to use it. Then talk to those people, interview them or offer a survey to complete.

In that survey, or in that conversation, ask them how much they would pay for the product/service, offer at least three prices or price ranges. If they don’t wish to buy ask them why.

A good pilot study is normally 20–50 people. The larger your target market, the more people you need to talk to.

Analyse those responses to gain information about what price range to charge, features to include in the product/ service, and a profile of the market, so that you can enhance the appeal of your product and minimise the outgoing costs.

Do this, and you have a better chance at avoiding business failure in the first three years of operation.

More than 200 children and just as many robots are expected to converge on the school in Kemps Creek from January 10 to 13.

“We have joined forces with Western Enrichment Learning Lab to provide high quality school holiday workshops for not only our own students, but also for children from right across western Sydney,” School Principal, Cathie Graydon said.

Western Enrichment Learning Lab (WELL) has been running workshops in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in Penrith since 2014 and is now moving permanently to Mamre Anglican College.

“Our workshops are so popular we have some children who participate every school holidays,” Founder and Coordinator of WELL, Anthony Head said.

A family oriented club, there’s a range of entertainment and festivities for everyone to enjoy, including Santa Claus making his arrival, the famous GWS Giants Kicking Zone and bouncing castle, as well as footy games.

President of Penrith Giants, Ronan McNally, said they’re excited to host the family fun day out.

“We want the families involved in our club to know Greygums Oval is a place where they can have fun and where all are welcome, regardless of ability,” he said.

“This weekend’s fun day will be huge with more games and inflatables to play with.”

For anyone interested in registering their child for the 2017 season, the club will also be accepting registrations on the day.

J

ohnny Edwards has made a career out of impersonating some of the world’s coolest performers.

From 1993 to 2004 he took on the role of The King, becoming one of the most acclaimed Elvis tribute acts in the business.

To his fans Elvis may have been a music icon, but to Johnny he was so much more.

“It was more like idiolising a superhero in a way,” he explained.

“He was a guy who could sing, was good looking, could fight, and wore the best clothes of anybody in any movie he was ever in,” he laughed.

Johnny’s role as Elvis also led to his appearance in the film ‘3000 Miles to Graceland’, starring alongside Hollywood heavyweights Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell.

“The funny thing about it is they were more enamoured at what we do for a living than we were at what they do for a living,” Johnny laughed.

“They were impressed that we have to become somebody every night and be believable in front of a live audience; with them it’s take one and if it doesn’t happen you do another take. So it was kind of nice when you get people who are already in the business and looked up to, have a respect for what you do.”

Though Elvis helped open many doors it was Johnny’s love for Dean Martin, a member of the infamous Rat Pack, that led him to hang up his white Elvis jumpsuit for good.

Luckily the change of icons wasn’t too much of a stretch.

“With Dean Martin, there was a guy who was always the best dressed, could sing, was good looking, was always fighting to save Jerry and always got the girl in the end,” Johnny said.

“So it was kind of cool that I went from Elvis to Dean and really didn’t have to change too much other than my hairstyle and my tuxedo.”

These days the talented impersonator is a member of the long-running, awardwinning production ‘The Rat Pack is Back’, which will be heading to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers Leagues Club next Friday.

The show will feature all the greatest hits from the legendary trio of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin.

It’s no easy task taking on some of the most unique and iconic performers show business has ever produced, especially a group like The Rat Pack, who are well known for their unique personalities and unexpected performances.

“With the Rat Pack not everything they did on stage was planned, but when you’re good at what you do it seems effortless,” Johnny said.

“That’s the hard part, making it look like it’s effortless.”

The Rat Pack from Vegas will be on at the Evan Theatre on Friday, December

Performance will be as cool as ice KATE REID

ake a break from the hot weather and experience the magic of a musical showcase on ice.

Local skating club, Sydney Ice Theatre, will be bringing their latest production ‘Jukebox Magic’ to Penrith Ice Palace next weekend.

The show will feature more than 30 local skaters from a wide range of ages and experience levels.

This talented bunch will perform popular songs from ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, ‘Mission Impossible’, Elvis Presley, ‘Annie the Musical’ and many more.

Along with duo and group performances, ‘Jukebox Magic’ will also feature solo performances including ‘The Great Pretender’ by Crystal Hook and ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ by Katie Hensley.

So rug up and head to Penrith Ice Palace – located in Pattys Place, Jamisontown – for a performance that’s sure to be cool as ice.

‘Jukebox Magic’ will be on at Penrith Ice Palace on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday December 11 at 5pm.

Sharks are on the attack again in this ocean thriller that will have audiences on the edge of their seats.

Nancy (Blake Lively) is a surfer who heads out to find her next perfect wave off the coast of a secluded section of beach.

But things take a dangerous turn when she’s attacked by a great white shark.

Only 200 yards from the shore Nancy must use her wits to help her survive.

Those with a keen eye for locations might notice that ‘The Shallows’ was filmed in our own backyard, in the pristine waters of Lord Howe Island off the coast of NSW.

While ‘animal-attacks-human’ films have become a pretty popular sub genre, ‘The Shallows’ has been praised by critics as being more engaging than its often clichéd counterparts.

Blake Lively has also been commended for her captivating onscreen performance.

The film was directed by Jaume ColletSara, who clearly has a love for all things thriller having worked on the action blockbuster ‘Non-Stop’ with Liam Neeson and horror films like ‘Orphan’.

Five exercise tips to assist with falls prevention

In Australia the average cost of falls prevention currently sits higher than the cost of car accidents. Falls are increasing at a rate that is out of control and by 2015 the annual bill increased to $1.4 billion.

One in three people over the age of 65 and one in two people over the age of 80 are at risk of a fall that will lead to a serious injury. For people over the age of 65, you are three times more likely to end up in hospital after a fall.

Risk factors that can contribute to falls include; strength, balance, coordination, walking speed, gait imbalances, poor vision, medication and reduced sensation of lower limbs. Exercise can help to improve most risk factors associated with falls and decrease your chance of falling.

A study that was recently completed in Australia concluded that three hours of high challenging balance exercise per week slashed your risk of falling by 40 per cent or more.

Exercise for falls prevention will cover the five main points below as well as work on improving your general cardiovascular fitness.

1. Strengthen your lower limbs: This will help with your ability to stop yourself from falling or recover after tripping or slipping. Stronger lower limb muscles, especially the calf muscles, can significantly reduce your risk of falls.

2. Gait imbalances: This will help to improve walking stride, stride length and help minimise your risk of tripping over your own feet. Gait training should also focus on your ability to walk properly using walking aids.

3. Balance and coordination: High chal-

lenging balance exercises are proven to help reduce the risk of falls.

4. Upper limb strength: This will help with your falls recovery strategies and give you the ability to pick yourself up after a fall or increase your ability to access a device to call for help.

5. Walking speed: A minimum walking speed of 3km/h is recommended to stay safely active within the community.

Snakes are out and about more at this time of the year, and our pets need to be careful...

We are now in the warmer months of the year when snakes tend to be out in full force.

With the heat, snakes become more active and with this, unfortunately snake bites become more frequent.

Dogs can be very inquisitive and are generally at highest risk of being bitten by snakes. Cats are also susceptible to snake bites, especially those that like to hunt.

The most common area for a snake bite on a pet is on the head and legs.

Snakes are generally timid creatures and stay away from humans and pets. It is often our inquisitive pets that seek out snakes and tend to lead to problems.

Trying to minimise areas where snakes are most likely to hide will decrease the likelihood of snakes; wood piles, clutter and long grass tends to give snakes hiding areas in our backyards.

If you suspect that your pet has been bitten by a snake, try to keep your pet calm and relaxed and seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. The sooner your pet is seen by a vet, the higher the chances of a recovery. If you can identify the snake or even take a photo, this will

be very helpful so we are able to treat your pet. However, never try to catch or kill a snake.

If we are unsure if your pet has been bitten or unsure of the snake type, a snake bite detection test can be performed on your pet’s blood or urine. In the Penrith area, we tend to see two main types of venomous snakes; either red belly black snakes or brown snakes and both types of snake bites are potentially fatal.

and difficulty breathing. The red belly black snake is more likely to cause haemolysis and breakdown of blood.

However either snake can cause both symptoms with disastrous consequences if left untreated.

Treatment involves the administration of an antivenom.

Antivenom is very expensive and can mean treatment for snake bite is costly.

Most animal health insurance will cover this cost so it is wise to consider pet insurance.

Let’s not make the silly season the angry season!

Christmas is a stressful time of year, but it’s vital that continue to teach and influence our children in a positive manner...

Everyone deserves to feel safe when doing sport.

Every employee and consumer deserves to feel safe, no matter whether they’re working or enjoying some retail therapy or recreation. This is why businesses, including ours, have safety policies in place, and this extends to our online presence. We’d like our social media community to reflect the positive, cooperative and fun environment we enjoy at our centres. Social media is incredibly fun, but in some cases it’s taken too far.

And we’re seeing it more and more.

Across the board our police, paramedics and nurses are being insulted, intimidated, and verbally and physically abused on a daily basis. Online, keyboard warriors sit in the safety of their homes and make terrible assumptions, accusations and threats, armed with very little information, a mob mentality and a whole lot of misdirected anger. I often see situations where parents who have lost their child to drowning have their grief, guilt and misery compounded by people passing judgement and assigning blame

on social media, all at a time when these parents need our sympathy and compassion. It could happen to anyone. How did it come to this?

The attitude of parents influences the environment in which we learn.

Especially at this time of year, with stress levels rising, it’s important to remember that we are our children’s biggest influencers and they learn from our every action.

We’re lucky in that the vast majority of our customers behave in an appropriate manner, but I know a lot of organisations who don’t enjoy the same. It’s for these customers that I must reiterate that safety is always our number one concern and at no time will we tolerate verbal abuse or threats of physical violence in any capac-

ity. Whether you’re online or in person, lead by example – don’t let your children be exposed to colourful language, verbal abuse or threats of physical violence because they will learn that this kind of behaviour is not only appropriate, but also normal. And it’s neither.

I know Christmas is a stressful time, but I ask everyone to take a deep breath this silly season and lead by example – if you have a problem, there’s always a resolution. For our organisation, know that we’re always here to discuss any issues calmly and collaboratively.

For the sake of the children we are teaching, and in the interests of safety for all, let’s not make the silly season the angry season.

How to ensure a stress-free time hosting Christmas Day Christmas can be a busy time for everybody, but a little bit of planning and organisation can change everything for the better...

Now I know that I’ve probably stressed some of you out with that statement but take a deep breath and read on.

Yes it’s true that Christmas can be hectic, but with a little planning and organisation it can also be a joyous, and delicious, time of year.

Buy what you can early and keep an eye out for bargains Christmas has a knack for destroying the bank balance, so over the next few weeks keep an eye out for items that are on sale.

Consider purchasing anything with a long shelf life now so all you have to worry about later is fresh food.

Also, be sure to stash your food haul out of sight, you don’t want to go to the pantry on Christmas Eve and find the chips and lollies have gone missing!

Consider pre-packaged sides, bulk cooking and freezable items Cute little bite sized eats may look nice, but they can also lead to a lot of unnecessary stress and preparation time come Christmas Day.

When deciding on what to serve consider meal items that are easy to make in bulk, already come prepared or can be made and frozen until needed.

Salad mixes, potato bakes and roast veg (pop them in the oven with some olive oil, salt and thyme and you’re done) are all easy to prepare.

For dessert try making a Christmas cake a few weeks in advance and serve with custard or ice-cream on the day.

Have a plan It may seem a little pedantic but trust me, having a plan for the days leading up to the event will make the whole process a lot easier.

In the years leading up to the birth of Jesus, there was a great sense of expectation in Ancient Israel.

Life was not as it should be. Yet, the people knew that God had promised to turn things around.

The Bible tells us about Simeon, a man who “was waiting for Israel to be saved”.

When Simeon first saw Jesus shortly after his birth, he knew that his wait was over.

We read how when Simeon saw Jesus, he cried out to God in prayer, “With my own eyes I have seen your salvation”.

Simeon knew that in sending Jesus, God had kept his promise. A new hope had been born; light and life had come to the world. Now at last, Simeon had peace!

All of us are waiting for something; for holidays, for school to finish, for life to take a turn for the better. Waiting for Christmas!

As we read these words from the Bible, we know that for so many of the things for which we wait, they will not bring the relief for which we were hoping.

While many people are waiting for something better, they miss the real life that is found in Jesus.

eigning Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) champions the Sydney Thunder will return to Penrith later this month for backto-back matches against the Adelaide Strikers.

Following a successful fixture at Howell Oval last year, the Thunder girls will hit the famous Penrith cricket pitch for two matches against Adelaide on Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith Mayor John Thain said he’ll be one of the many thousands of locals in attendance.

“Limited overs cricket is unpredictable and it’s exciting. I really hope the community comes out and supports our team,” he said.

“The village-style atmosphere we have at Howell Oval is just iconic for cricket, and I’m confident everyone will turn out and support the Thunder.”

The exciting announcement comes off the back of the news that local Penrith Cricket Club member Mikayla Hinkley has signed a new one-year deal to return to the Thunder this season.

The 18-year-old all-rounder, who made her WBBL debut last summer in Penrith, will once again don the famous lime green for another season after an outstanding year saw her debut for the NSW Breakers.

“Coming off such a successful year there’s nothing more I could have asked for than to renew my contract with the Thunder,” Hinkley told the Weekender.

“It’s going to be a great season and a well-rounded competition again this year.

It’ll be a challenge but an exciting one.”

The Thunder took out last season’s inaugural WBBL title after defeating crosstown rivals the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL Final back in January.

Hinkley said she’s looking forward to returning to familiar territory with her Thunder teammates.

“I’m absolutely stoked we’ve got two games here at Howell Oval,” she said.

“The atmosphere last year was incredible – none of us had experienced an atmosphere quite like it before.”

“The sponsorship agreement with Payce is critical to improving facilities and to keep us competitive.”

McCarthy said the club continues to attract strong growth at all levels, with total membership now around the 400 mark.

Ironman Grit and determination proves the difference at Ironman 70.3 NATHAN TAYLOR

elbourne’s Annabel Luxford took out her second straight Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney last Sunday, while Brisbane’s Dan Wilson claimed his first Ironman 70.3 title.

Held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney was contested by more than 1000 competitors from around Australia and the globe.

“I’m really happy to come back today and grab the win. It’s never easy to come back and get the win again, but you couldn’t have asked for better conditions, it started to get warm towards the end,” Luxford said after the race.

“The crowd support was fantastic, the other athletes pushed me, I’m really happy.”

For Dan Wilson, it was the perfect end to a year that started with a run of injuries that kept him from racing.

His last month had been career defining as he added the Noosa Triathlon – Australia’s most prestigious Olympic distance title – to his trophy cabinet and last weekend recorded his first Ironman 70.3 win.

“That was kind of hard out there today; I tried to push the whole way, which is a tough way to race. I pushed the swim and bike and then wanted to see what I could do on the run,” Wilson said.

“The last 5km hurt today.”

Luxford confirmed she would chase a third Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney title in 2017 when the event doubles as the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship.

Panthers part ways with Grevsmuhl

rskine Park’s Chameleon Reserve is putting on a new face for sporting users, spectators and the community with a brand new amenity and storage building alongside the existing netball courts.

The new amenities block consists of two toilet units, an accessible toilet, a unisex ambulant facility, a small service area and a storeroom.

Resurfacing work has also started, which will improve the quality of the netball courts after years of damage from vandals.

Penrith Mayor, John Thain, said the new amenities will attract and encourage players wanting to participate in sporting and recreational activities at the ground.

“Chameleon Reserve, Erskine Park, has long served the local community as a recreation area with Erskine Park Eagles Netball Club playing there for more than 24 years,” he said.

Funding of $150,000 was provided under the Public Open Space Reinvestment Project as well as through s94 Developer Contributions.

“The new amenities block is something we’ve been waiting for for a very long time – 14 years to be exact,” Erskine Park Eagles President, Lynn Devis said.

“The number one reason we needed it so badly was because children would often have to go home to use the amenities because we didn’t have any other local public toilets within the area at all.

“This would in-turn disrupt training schedules and it wasn’t convenient for anyone.”

Devis said the club, including its players and coaching staff, were very appreciative of the much-needed addition.

“Everyone is very happy because it has been a long time coming,” she said.

“I want to thank Penrith Council and the State Government for the funds.”

Chameleon Reserve isn’t the only local sporting facility to receive a facelift, with Penrith Council recently completing the installation of a new $145,000 irrigation system at Howell Oval. Construction of a new amenity building at Cranebrook Park is also due for completion.

Just a few weeks ago he was proudly showcasing Penrith’s 2017 jersey but forward Chris Grevsmuhl has now parted ways with the club.

The Panthers confirmed last week that 23-year-old Grevsmuhl had been granted an immediate release from his contract with the club.

In a statement, the Panthers said Grevsmuhl needed to deal with “issues of a personal nature”.

“The club has agreed to the release on compassionate grounds, to give Grevsmuhl the time away from the game that he requires,” the statement said.

Grevsmuhl played 14 NRL games for the Panthers after joining the club from the South Sydney Rabbitohs midway through the 2016 season.

“Having two Cartwrights playing in the one team is definitely a goal of mine. There’s a lot of hard work before that can happen, but I’m very hopeful.”

One person who was very happy to hear Cartwright was moving back home was his father and current Manly Sea Eagles assistant coach John Cartwright.

The Cartwright name is synonymous with Penrith, with John winning a premiership at the club in 1991 and grandfather Merv one of the founding fathers.

“I consulted with Dad about the move, he’s obviously very proud especially because his Dad (Merv) was very instrumental in getting the club started,” Cartwright said.

“Dad’s always there if I need advice plus I’ve got the coaches here at Penrith to help me as well.”

Cartwright, who made the NSW U20’s squad last year, said his goal for 2017 is to stay fit and make his NRL debut.

“Over these next 12 months I want to stay on the park as much as I can,” he said.

“If I’m able to do that then hopefully I’m playing good footy, and then get a debut – that would be unreal.”

Panthers’ focus moves closer to home with Christchurch deal now off the table TROY DODDS

n a shock move, the Panthers have put an end to their plans to play a home game in Christchurch each year, moving the match back to Pepper Stadium in Penrith.

The Panthers played two ‘home’ games at away venues last season, one against the Warriors in Christchurch and another against Canberra in Bathurst.

The Bathurst game is part of Penrith’s 2017 schedule, announced last week, but it’s understood Panthers coach Anthony Griffin was one of the key figures behind a push to bring the Christchurch match back home.

CEO Brian Fletcher, Chairman Dave O’Neill and the Board were supportive of the move, clearly indicating the importance of two competition points and building the best possible presence in Penrith are key priorities for the club.

Panthers fans will have to wait until round three for the first home game of the 2017 NRL season, with the Panthers on the road for the opening fortnight.

Penrith will open their 2017 campaign against St George-Illawarra on Saturday, March 4 at 4.30pm at Kogarah.

The Panthers will then be forced into a nightmare 6pm timeslot on Friday, March 24 to play last year’s wooden spooners Newcastle at Pepper Stadium.

It is an almost impossible game for Panthers officials to market and thousands of fans are likely to miss the game due to work and travel commitments.

But NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said he expects the 6pm Friday timeslot to be a hit despite obvious crowd issues.

“Fans will be able to see two games live on Fridays and, while the early game may present some challenges in terms of attendances, we think it will be a big hit,” he said.

Penrith spend the first month of the competition in Sydney before travelling to Melbourne in round five to take on the Storm AAMI Park.

Penrith will host plenty of big matches at Pepper Stadium but one key fixture missing is a home game against arch rivals Parramatta.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have had an awful week of results against Baulkham Hills during Round 11 of the NSW State Baseball League.

In the mid-week game last Wednesday night, Baulkham Hills defeated Penrith 7-3, while last Sunday afternoon Baulkham Hills won 14-12.

Penrith will take on Cronulla in Round 12.

CRICKET: Penrith have lost their third straight game, defeated by Northern District in Round 6 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval, Penrith racked up 280 runs on Day 1. Matthew Halse top scored for Penrith with 59 runs.

When Northern District hit the crease on Day 2, they reached Penrith’s total with ease – only losing two wickets in the process.

Penrith’s best with the ball was Ryan Smith, who took 1/62.

Penrith will hope to win their first game since Round 3 when they take on Gordon this Saturday morning.

IRONKIDS: Congratulations to young Cranebrook triathlete Brody Hull, who achieved outstanding results at last weekend’s Ironkids event at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

The Samuel Terry Public student finished first in the nine-year-old boys category and was also the fastest boy in the 7-10 years age category.

Brody finished in third place overall

in the mixed 7-10 years age category.

A-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers remain undefeated at Spotless Stadium but would have wanted all three points after a dominant display in a 1-1 draw against the Brisbane Roar last Friday.

After three draws in their opening three matches at Spotless, the Wanderers earned another point through a second half goal from Japanese import Jumpei after Jamie Maclaren opened the scoring for Brisbane from the penalty spot.

The result gives the Wanderers their fifth draw of the season. This Saturday afternoon the Wanderers take on the Central Coast Mariners at Central Coast Stadium.

W-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers were left frustrated at missed chances as a dominant first half was not rewarded in a 2-0 loss to the Brisbane Roar last weekend.

A strong first half in which the Wanderers controlled play was spoiled with two lapses of concentration and the home team were not able to recover in the second half.

The Wanderers enjoy a bye this weekend before resuming next week against Melbourne Victory.

Y-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers have shot to the top of the National Youth League table after swatting aside Sydney FC 3-0 in a devastating performance last Sunday at Marconi Stadium.

Jed feels right at home NATHAN TAYLOR

ew Penrith Panthers recruit Jed Cartwright said he feels right at home, playing for the club that means so much to him.

The 20-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Panthers after departing the Gold Coast Titans at the end of last season.

It’s understood club bosses had been attempting for years to lure the Warragamba junior and son of Panthers legend John Cartwright to the club.

Speaking after a recent training session, Cartwright said he was happy to be back in familiar territory.

“It’s a familiar area because I grew up here but I hadn’t been back in a while,” he said.

“I’ve pretty much supported the Panthers my whole life, even though my ‘old man’ was up on the Gold Coast.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for the Panthers and I’m glad I’m here.”

The young backrower’s move to Penrith means the club is now flush with two Cartwrights, with older cousin Bryce already carving out a name for himself in first grade.
