Christmas retail rush fails to deliver for businesses blocked by CBD worksite EMILY NEWTON
t the western end of High Street, a construction zone blocks the view of small businesses that are left desperate to attract customers during what should be their busiest season. As the Triangle Park construction continues through Christmas, businesses have struggled since it began in July with work expected to continue into the first quarter of 2018. Irene Hill, from Oasis Skin and Laser Clinic, said local businesses need local support, with two neighbouring shops having already closed their doors. “Eight businesses that I have spoken to have indicated they’ve been negatively impacted as a result of these works,” she told the Weekender. “As a first time business owner I feel helpless. What can I do to bring customers to the area while the construction work is happening? “I don’t have huge advertising budgets or a marketing team. Myself and many of the businesses affected by the construction work have introduced heavily discounted specials in the hope it will bring foot traffic to the area.” In an impromptu meeting with Council
A
in 2015, Ms Hill was told the plans were put forward, but she says many of the businesses that are being impacted were non-existent in 2015. “We were not given the opportunity to have our say. We were not consulted at all,” she said. “It is disappointing to note that the majority of work is taking place during the peak periods of spring and summer, including Christmas. Passing trade is almost non-existent. “As a small business owner with three employees, I simply cannot afford the continuing loss of income.” Council has apologised for any inconvenience and thanked local businesses and the community for their patience during construction of the park, which they say will inject new life into the City Centre as a dynamic, green, social place supporting the day and night time economy. “I’d like to once again thank local businesses for their patience during this important project,” Penrith Mayor, John Thain said. “I encourage people to visit these businesses as they go about their Christmas shopping and socialising this December. Get to know them. When the park is completed, the area will be one of the most popular spaces in the city.”

Park construction lingers
Construction continues at the Triangle Park in Penrith. Photo: Melinda Jane When completed, Triangle Park will feature new paving, tree planting, seating, a water feature, deck and shade structures and will be more vibrant and attractive to benefit residents, workers, visitors and local businesses. Ms Hill hopes shoppers will keep her and others in mind over the coming months.
“We are a humble family-owned business and I’m very grateful for any customer referrals and community support,” she said. “I just hope I won’t have to let go of any staff in the lead up to Christmas. That would break my heart if that had to happen.”

ll of us look forward to the Christmas period – an opportunity to relax, reset and take a much-needed break. For the sitting NSW and Federal Liberal governments, that break couldn’t come soon enough. It has been a rocky finish to the year for Gladys Berejiklian and Malcolm Turnbull, and the opportunity to reset the agenda in 2018 is critical. Let’s deal with State issues first. With cranes everywhere across Sydney, and key projects being completed, there is no doubt that the State Government is getting NSW moving, a legacy of former Premier Mike Baird who pushed hard to give the State renewed life. But while it’s been a pretty sweet ride for Baird’s replacement, Gladys Berejiklian, the wheels have started to fall off in the last couple of months. It seems the Government just can’t get it right with the public at the moment. The new container deposit scheme has been awfully rolled out, with countless reports of problems and poor experiences for manufacturers, retailers and the general public. A poorly thought out policy that aims to fix a problem that wasn’t really a problem and for the end user, delivers higher costs for drinks. And what is going on with the collection points? Why is a carpet shop in Penrith a collection point? And a hot bread shop in St Marys? In Katoomba, it’s an Indian supermarket. As the mess of the roll-out started to unravel, Environment Minister Grabrielle Upton smiled through it all, keeping a happy public persona.
Index
“The only winners in all of this are Bill Shorten and Luke Foley” There is nothing more frustrating to the voting public than when a Minister stands by something all of us know has been delivered poorly. Case in point, Ms Upton’s Cabinet colleague, Transport Minister Andrew Constance. Another bloody nose on the State Government’s finish to the year is the new train timetable, which has disadvantaged thousands of Penrith commuters and many others on the network. Like Ms Upton, Mr Constance just keeps rolling out the spin, trying to stand by something that has been so poorly received you have to wonder how it got through the approval process and what consultation was had with commuters. Last week he was still trying to claim trips on the Blue Mountains Line into the city were faster, not slower. It’s almost like he’s making it up as he goes along. And what about last week’s announcement surrounding sports stadiums? As I wrote in our last edition, the end result will be a stadium network that is the envy of the country. But when you have more than 100,000 signatures on a petition in a short period of time, something isn’t right. The public simply isn’t buying the argument that these stadiums are critical and it’s become a PR disaster.
News.............................................1-33 Christmas Giveaway...34-35 Business................................36-38
Gladys Berejiklian could hand out $50 notes to every NSW voter and it still wouldn’t be a winner at the moment. With tolls also a major concern for voters this year, the State Government needs Christmas to reset the messaging and agenda in 2018. The summer break, especially in State politics, has always presented an opportunity to draw a line in the sand I suspect that’s what the Berejiklian government will be doing this year. As for her Federal counterparts, it appears Malcolm Turnbull will survive summer as Prime Minister, which many would consider extraordinary given the year from hell he’s had. It was all topped off last week with his extraordinary backflip on the Royal Commission into the banking sector. It wasn’t quite his “there will be no carbon tax under a Government I lead” moment but it was pretty darn close. Unlike Gladys Berejiklian who will be able to reset and revive in 2018, Turnbull appears to be a dead man walking. He is leading a government that seems so disorganised, so disenchanted, that there is simply no way to turn public perception around. The only winners in all of this are Bill Shorten and Luke Foley. They will be spending summer with their confidence higher than the Aussie cricket team after this last six months. Truth is Shorten and Foley aren’t the answer, either. I doubt either would run very popular or effective governments to be honest. But at some point, the public will say “they couldn’t do any worse” and that attitude can win and lose you elections.

Cornish makes switch Controversial Councillor joins One Nation and hints at State or Federal tilt EMILY NEWTON
enrith’s at times controversial conservative Councillor Marcus Cornish has joined Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party. Having recently returned from the Queensland State Election where he helped One Nation, Cr Cornish spoke about his decision to join the party. “I’d been thinking about it for quite a while,” he told the Weekender. “One Nation has appeal across Australia and is set to be in the shorter term a balance of power player, and in the longterm, a power in its own right. “In the last few weeks before the Queensland election I decided to join and help out wherever the party needed me. “I was extremely well received by Pauline and the party.” Despite the switch, Cr Cornish is adamant that he will continue putting his constituents first by remaining an independent Councillor. “I’ve been elected as an independent Councillor, and I will remain an independent Councillor,” he said. He said that while his decision to join the party might turn some people off him, he feels it will enhance his ability to serve.

Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish has joined One Nation “I think I can gain more for the people, which is harder as an independent,” he said. “One Nation does have regular meetings out here, and the following is growing in the area. “People are discontent with a lack of representation.” Cr Cornish slammed both the Labor and Liberal parties, saying they have very little differences today.
“I think Labor and Liberal are so similar now. Their members aren’t allowed to speak,” he said. “I’ve got more respect for someone who says what they think, whether I agree with it or not. “They don’t want anyone rocking the boat. One Nation previously 20 years ago, their highest vote was in Lindsay. That’s why they’re all worried about me.” In the 1998 Federal Election, One Nation

candidate for Lindsay Rick Putra received 9.97 per cent of votes, pulling votes away from both major parties. Whether he leaves local Council to move into State or even Federal politics is something Cr Cornish is leaving to Ms Hanson and her team. “I’m leaving my options open,” Cr Cornish said. “Wherever the party decides I’d be of best use, I’ll see.”

t’s controversial and is putting up the cost of drinks, but there’s still some winners out of the NSW Government’s new Return and Earn container deposit scheme. Locals can now get a 10 cent refund on eligible bottles through the scheme, which launched last week despite heavy criticism of the roll-out. The collection point network includes reverse vending machines, over-thecounter sites such as petrol stations and cafes, and automated depots. “Almost 50 per cent of litter by volume is made up of beverage containers – Return and Earn will capture 43 per cent of this litter,” Environment Minister, Gabrielle Upton said. Charities, community groups and schools can register their interest to become a donation partner under the rotation system, with The Cancer Council, St Vincent de Paul, Surf Life Saving NSW and Planet Ark named as the first charities featured on reverse vending machines. In Penrith, locals can take their eligible drink containers to Vinnies stores in Jamisontown and Kingswood. St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO, Jack de Groot, said all funds donated to Vinnies through the scheme will be used to help run accommodation and support

hile the exams are finished and pens have been put down, for many HSC students the stress and anxiety still remains as they wait for their final results. One week from now, students all over NSW will be receiving their HSC and ATAR results and, while the time should be full of celebration, come next Thursday not everyone will be jumping for joy. Former school captain at St Marys Senior High School, Ruby Thorburn, remembers that feeling all too well. After achieving an ATAR of 98.8, Ms Thorburn was one of the top achievers in the state yet, despite this achievement, she recalled being disappointed for not getting the score of 99 she was aiming for. “In retrospect I realise how insane this mentality was, but I think my dissatisfaction with myself despite my achievements shines insight towards how we as a society place such a high value on numbers,” she said. “The entire experience of the HSC taught me that I hadn’t truly questioned why I wanted the things I was working towards.” Issuing a timely reminder, youth mental

Current HSC students at Jamison High School will be watching next week’s results with interest. Photo: Melinda Jane health organisation, Headspace, said that the waiting game for students can cause an increase in anxiety and those experiencing high levels should reach out for help. Jamison High School Careers Adviser, Peter Markham, said unfortunately students are always going to put high expectations on themselves to do well.
“We had a motivation talk to our students after their trials and they were spoken to about the different pathways offered to them and not to put too much pressure on themselves,” he said. “I know they feel as if they are letting themselves down and their family but they can only do the best they can.” Instead of attending uni as she had
planned to do, since finishing school Ms Thorburn travelled solo to Peru, Kenya and Nepal to explore how women live in developing countries. “Despite what we are told, the HSC certainly is not the be all and end all,” Ms Thorburn said. HSC results will start to roll out via email or text from 6am next Thursday.

How to save this Christmas season LAUREN SUTTIE
hile Christmas is one of the best times of the year, filled with joy and celebration, it is also the most expensive with Australians forking out $48.1 billion last Christmas season. With predictions that this year is going to be even bigger than last, it pays to know the little tips and tricks to ensure that your wallet remains as stout as the big man in red himself. After marrying into a huge family, mother of four Norma De Giorgio spends her Christmas shuffling food and gifts around to her in-laws’ house with up to 36 other family members. “After growing up in a small family I can honestly say spending the day with family is my favourite thing about Christmas,” she said. “Spending it with each other has been a tradition passed down in their family and I feel privileged to be a part of this and see the joy this day brings to one another.” Big families often mean lots of food and, after working for ABCOE in Penrith for the past nine years, Mrs De Giorgio believes that the party and bulk food supply store has all your food needs covered, no matter
W
the size of the celebration – and it’ll save you money, too. “ABCOE have made catering for the party season easy with a range of Party Packs, these include a selection of favourite goodies for the size and occasion of the function,” she said. “They even have you covered with quality leg hams and our on-site butcher prides himself on keeping our fridges stocked with fresh quality meats. “Our fresh salads are always a hit and a great way to save time and money.” Besides buying food in bulk, Mrs De Giorgio said the best way to tackle Christmas is to create a budget early so you can take advantage of any specials and deals. “Buying something each week is also a good way to keep the budget on track and also ensures that products will not sell out just before the Christmas shopping rush,” she said. “Don’t worry if you end up over catering as leftovers are always welcome to make Boxing Day easy and relaxing. “You could even turn them into meals and pop into the freezer for quick meals over the busy season.” ABCOE is located on York Road in Jamisontown. Visit www.abcoe.com.au for more information.

Police Snapshot COMPILED BY EMILY NEWTON
Werrington: Man assaulted with walking stick
Police are appealing for information after a man was beaten by his own walking stick last week. Between 8.20pm and 8.40pm on Thursday, November 30, a 55-year-old man boarded a train at Kingswood Railway Station to travel to Werrington. While on the train, the man was involved in a verbal argument with another man. As the man got off the train at Werrington, the unknown man allegedly grabbed the 55-year-old man’s walking stick and struck him several times to the face and body, causing the man to drop his mobile phone. The unknown man threw the walking stick onto the railway tracks before fleeing the scene. The 55-year-old man sustained a minor injury to his forearm and a bloodied nose. Police would like to speak with a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries. He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 40s, approximately 175cm tall, receding brown hair, goatee facial hair, with a large build. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, and carrying a backpack. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact police on 1800 333 000.
Penrith: Man charged after filming woman in bathroom
A man who was filming women in toilet cubicles has been arrested and found to be in possession of child abuse material. At about 7.10am on Friday, December 1, a 53-year-old woman was using the toilets in a shopping centre on Woodriff Street, Penrith, when she noticed a mobile phone being held under the door of her cubicle. The woman confronted the man with the phone, who was then detained by security before police arrived. Police arrested the man and he was taken to Penrith Police Station where
an ‘ice’ pipe was allegedly found in his possession. On his phone police allegedly located a video of the woman using the toilet as well as many other videos of unknown women using public toilets at unknown locations. Child exploitation material was also allegedly found on the phone. The 22-year-old man was charged with ‘filming person’s private parts without consent’, ‘filming person in private act without consent’, two counts of ‘possess child abuse material’, and ‘possession of equipment for administering prohibited drug’.
Colyton: Woman busted with drugs after police spot vehicle
At about 12.30pm on Saturday, December 2, police were travelling on Desborough Road, Colyton when they sighted a vehicle that stopped near a reserve. Police witnessed a female walk up to the vehicle and get in. Officers have stopped and had a conversation with the driver. At this time the female, a 28-year-old Oxley Park woman exited the vehicle. She was subsequently stopped and searched. It is alleged located in her purse was 7.1 grams of amphetamine. She was charged with ‘Supply prohibited drug’ and ‘Possess prohibited drug’ to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, December 18.
Jamisontown: Have you seen a white Maserati around Penrith?
Police are seeking assistance from the public in locating a stolen white Maserati after it was seen on Mulgoa Road, Jamisontown. At about 3.30pm on Saturday, December 2, the vehicle was seen parked outside a set of units on Mulgoa Road. It then travelled along Preston Street towards York Road where police followed the car for a short time before losing sight. If you have any information or spot the vehicle, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Double jeopardy in our legal system A hearing is underway this week in the Criminal Court of Appeal in Sydney as to whether or not a man should be retried for murdering three people in the New South Wales suburb of Bowraville in the early 1990s. The man in question has been the number one suspect in relation to the murders of Evelyn Greenup (4), Clinton Speedy-Duroux (16) and Colleen Walker (16) which occurred between 1990 and 1991. He was acquitted of the murder of Speedy-Duroux in 1994 and later acquitted of the murder of Greenup in 2006. He has never been tried for the murder of Colleen Walker. The case is an important legal precedent as it puts New South Wales double jeopardy laws to the test. Generally, double jeopardy laws prevent someone from being tried for the same crime twice. Double jeopardy laws in New South Wales changed in 2006 allowing a suspect to be re-tried for a crime if “fresh and compelling” evidence was discovered. In other words, solid evidence that did not form part of the original trial. Since these changes the Bowraville murders have been the symbolic centrepiece surrounding how these laws should apply in New South Wales. In 2007, following the law reforms, the then Director of the DPP, Nicholas Chowdhury rejected calls for the suspect to be re-tried on the basis that the DPP did not have enough evidence to support a retrial. Similar setbacks occurred in 2010 and 2013 when the then Attorney-General
rejected applications for the suspect to be re-tried for the murders of SpeedyDuroux and Greenup. In May last year however, Attorney General Gabrielle Upton referred the Bowraville murders to the Court of Criminal Appeal to determine whether or not the matter should be re-tried. In February this year the suspect in question was once again charged with the murders of Greenup and SpeedyDuroux in the Newcastle Local Court. It has been reported that should the Court find that a re-trial is appropriate that the suspect will then be formally charged with the murder of Colleen Walker and that the matters will be heard together. Some of the evidence being relied upon by the solicitors and barristers arguing in favour of a re-trial are accusations that the suspect tried to pressure Colleen Walker into having sex with him shortly before her disappearance. The argument is also being presented that all three alleged murders should be heard together and in conjunction with each other as they are intrinsically linked, as opposed to being heard as separate matters that do not take into account the pattern of these murders which all occurred in the same location, in a very short period of time. The Court of Criminal Appeal is yet to determine whether or not a re-trial will go ahead however, the result of this case will be a landmark legal decision in the State of New South Wales. Foley will review trains Labor promises to get timetable back on track if it wins government in 2019 EMILY NEWTON
or a second week, unhappy western Sydney commuters have sat through longer journey times, crowded trains and additional transfers. It’s a far cry from what Premier Gladys Berejiklian called “an early Christmas present” for customers. Speaking to journalists at Penrith Station last week, Minister for Transport Andrew Constance slipped up while adamant that Labor were “clutching at straws”. “There’s 301 additional services from Penrith Station into the city,” he said. But the Weekender can reveal that the 301 additional services that stop at Penrith Station overall each week are not just journeys into the city. The same day Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres challenged Labor to come up with a better timetable. “There’s 29 trains leaving Penrith Train Station between 6am and 9am. If Labor’s got a better timetable, they can show it to us,” he said. NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley seems to have accepted the challenge, committing to a review of the timetables to correct the “bias” against western Sydney if elected at the 2019 State Election.
F
“It has become abundantly clear that many people in western Sydney are worse not better off under this new timetable,” he said. “If elected, I will commit Labor to reviewing the timetable, to rid the bias against western Sydney and restore some fairness.” The review promise comes as Sydney University joins the growing backlash against the timetable, particularly the decision to remove Redfern as a stop on the popular Blue Mountains Line express services. Vice-chancellor Michael Spence said the decision had “added greatly to the university’s already significant public transport pressures”. Despite Mr Ayres saying last week he had received very few complaints about the new timetable, Labor say they have received a steady stream of complaints to the offices of Labor Members of Parliament in western Sydney. In addition, feedback to the Weekender and on social media suggests this is a burning issue that could play a significant role at the next election. “Timetable changes should mean improved services not increased travel times and skipped stations,” Shadow Transport Minister, Jodi McKay said.

Classic Sydney tram gets new life as local study space LAUREN SUTTIE
t’s been three years since Nepean Christian School acquired a 1934 tram, which they decked out to become one of the quirkiest senior study spaces. The inside of the number 1849 tram was renovated back in 2014 by the school and includes air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a mini fridge and wheelchair access. The exterior of the tram however, had been left untouched since it was rescued from the Londonderry tram graveyard, until English and Technology teacher, Nathan Zamprogno, decided it was also due for a makeover. “I conceived the project as a way of encouraging recently idle Year 12 students, fresh from their HSC exams, to come and give back to the school,” he said. “Stretching ourselves to learn new skills and being self-motivated to see a need and address it, is at the core of what I teach, and is important to what our school is about.” With the help and guidance from local paint shop Auto West, Mr Zamprogno and the former Year 12 students have started to restore the tram back to its former glory. “I had no previous experience with
I
Students with teacher Nathan Zamprogno next to the 1934 tram they are restoring. Photo: Melinda Jane restoration when we began, I simply saw a lovely piece of our heritage and a quirky presence on our campus in need of some TLC,” Mr Zamprogno said. “The tram is being re-painted with colours true to the original livery, older readers may recall Sydney trams in green and yellow, and I feel it is important to remain authentic to its history.
“There were also lovely brass parts that were entirely painted over and have now been sandblasted and polished, and wood-rot and corrosion repaired, which threatened to prevent the tram from being here in another 83 years.” Year 12 student Joel Baillie, who is part of the restoration team, said the project has been a privilege to be part of.
The Belmore Street commuter car park will re-open before the new year in a major win for frustrated train travellers. The car park has been closed for much of this year while the upgrade to Penrith Station was completed. Penrith City Council constructed a temporary car park on the north-side of the station and temporarily lifted parking restrictions on the streets in Thornton to provide interim commuter parking during the recent work at the station. The Belmore Street car park was also used as a temporary bus interchange. The temporary car park at Thornton, a future development site, will close on December 31. At the same time 2P and 4P parking restrictions will be reinstated along streets in Thornton. Commuters will be able to park in the new multistorey car park and in the re-opened Belmore Street car park on the southern side of the Station. “The new car park will provide some relief for residents but it is not the answer to commuter parking in the city,” said Penrith Mayor John Thain. “Council is continuing to work on practical solutions to reduce stress on commuter car parking. But we can’t do it alone – it is the State Government’s responsibility to ensure our commuters have sufficient parking.” Back in August Council made a detailed submission to the State Government Inquiry into commuter car parking.

“Life changing” legal trial Penrith Local Court to test program aimed at taking new approach to offenders EMILY NEWTON
n an attempt to treat underlying causes instead of delivering criminal sanctions for people with cognitive impairments, the NSW Government has launched a pilot diversion program at Penrith Local Court. Also rolling out at Gosford, the Cognitive Impairment Diversion Program addresses the underlying causes of their offending behaviour to help defendants with a cognitive impairment charged with low-level offences stay out of the criminal system, in what Attorney General Mark Speakman describes as “life changing”. “We recently modernised the definition of cognitive impairment so it now covers intellectual disability, autism, brain damage from drug and alcohol abuse, and brain damage from trauma,” he said. “If they have that cognitive impairment it’s really a health issue more than a legal issue. We want to make sure that the legal system deals with those people properly so that they don’t come back before the court.” Minister for Mental Health Tanya Davies said anyone who is a violent offender will not participate in this program. “The people that we’re looking at divert-

ing out of the criminal justice system are those people that have a cognitive impairment who have committed minor offences,” she explained. “There is a safety mechanism that if the individual is not continuing with the safety plan that’s been agreed to, or the rehabilitation plan that the court has agreed to, if they don’t continue to participate, then they will come back to the court system.” With the Intellectual Disability Rights Service on board, a full-time psychologist at both locations and a psychiatrist shared between the two, the program is completely voluntary. It will provide a report to help magistrates decide whether to direct defendants into treatment or support as an alternative to criminal sanctions. “This is not about being soft on crime, or feeling sorry for people, this is a scientific study evaluated next year and the year after to see if it reduces re-offending,” Attorney General Speakman added. “This is about not only better health outcomes for the offenders, but greater community safety if we can intervene and address the causes of their behaviour rather than throwing them in jail.” The Cognitive Impairment Diversion program will be evaluated after a year.

Are the NSW residents expected to cop the $2.3 billion spend on sports stadiums and thereby accept that once accomplished it would leave only the SCG as an “oval” venue in Sydney, with its limited seating capacity, to host any future Commonwealth or Olympic Games without spending another zillion dollars to recreate one as large as Homebush? TED RYAN, CAMBRIDGE PARK
Too much cash My family and I live in South Penrith. We vote based on the belief that a candidate will uphold some basic ideals which benefit our community (not on any favourite party). We (and most people I know) are disgusted, incensed, horrified and aggrieved at your decision to pour $2 billion of NSW money into “re-inventing the wheel” – that is demolish and then re-build two stadiums. Please don’t dismiss my view... I am not against sport. I have been to these stadiums. We need to have stadiums for the occasional sporting or cultural event. But this is a frightening amount of money to spend. Of course, we need to spend money to improve facilities for all Sydneysiders. It’s never about what you spend – it’s about what you get for what you spend. This is just poor value. It’s not $2 million. It is $2000 million. For governments, it’s generally difficult to raise sufficient money for all
the things requiring expenditure. Please don’t waste this amount of money. It’s not a vote-winner. It makes me sick to the stomach – and I don’t want to have to seek medical attention at the under-resourced Nepean Hospital. Think. And spend our money wisely. MARTIN GATES, SOUTH PENRITH
Stadium spend makes sense Sydney is a sporting city. It needs high quality sporting venues to attract quality events and concerts. Just this week Taylor Swift announced her major stadium tour, which will include ANZ Stadium. The older the venue gets, the more chances are that tours like this will skip Sydney. Students share festive spirit
S A L E luxury for everyone
Nicole Lopes and Emily Riordan with the Year 9 students who put the bags together
hile to many these might seem like old handbags, for women without a home, they hold pieces of dignity that so many of us take for granted. Students and teachers from Erskine Park High School recently participated in ‘It’s in the Bag’, an annual drive by Share the Dignity that aims to give women and teen girls, who are homeless or living in refuge shelters, something to remind them that they matter. “The girls we selected to help were all girls who we knew would really benefit from the experience for different reasons
W
and who would really care about the cause,” said teacher Emily Riordan. “We ended up collecting and filling 41 bags, all with the essentials of sanitary products, shampoo and conditioner, body soap, moisturiser, tooth brush and toothpaste, deodorant and a Christmas present and card.” Year 9 student Sophie Lee said that she liked knowing that she had the power to make someone’s Christmas brighter. “I believe the women that we make these bags for should be able to celebrate Christmas with equal joy and happiness as everybody else,” she said. 85,000 women and teenage girls will be without a home or living in a refuge shelter this Christmas.

Cute calf needs a name Cherrywood Hub provides a wonderful environment for Afford clients EMILY NEWTON
ust weeks after opening its doors in Llandilo, Afford’s industry-first disability services hub has welcomed a new baby calf to the family. Kiralee Jackson, Afford District Manager – Far West, said Cherrywood Hub is a wonderful place to be. “Clients are constantly engaged and can take part in activities that interest them,” she said. “The inclusion of the petting zoo and multiple sensory gardens means that clients can choose what they want to be involved in.” Cherrywood Hub provides clients with the opportunity to socialise with peers and create new friendships. It is designed to make learning fun, to help enhance their skills at home, at work and in life. “It gives locals living with disability the opportunity to join a supportive and inclusive community where they can explore their interests,” she said. “But it’s also a place where their families and carers can get support and advice about NDIS planning. “Interaction with animals presents great opportunities for client therapy. Clients can learn about caring for and feeding the
J
animals, but animals also offer sensory benefits. “Some clients like the stimulation of animals jumping and wriggling around, whereas others are calmed by petting the animals.” Daisy, a miniature belted galloway, gave birth to a calf on October 25, the day before the official opening of the Cherrywood Hub. “Having Daisy around has been such a delight, especially with the excitement of the birth of her baby calf,” Ms Jackson said. “It’s been a very educational experience for everyone and is a way that Afford can incorporate new life experiences for clients, some of whom have never seen or touched a baby cow.” Continuing their community focus, Afford is inviting everyone to take part in finding the perfect name for Daisy’s calf. “We really wanted to get the community involved,” Ms Jackson said. “Our clients have been commenting on their favourite names and we received some wonderful name suggestions. “We’re up to short listing all the names and all Afford’s Facebook followers will have the chance to vote for the overall winning name.” To vote: www.facebook.com/Afford.

The year is quickly drawing to a close and it’s now that many of us join friends, family and work colleagues to celebrate the festive season. But for some, this time of year isn’t as joyous as it could be. Imagine not knowing where your next meal will come from – or stretching out a sparse food cupboard that simply doesn’t provide adequate nourishment for your family. This is the reality that millions of Australians wake up to every day. For many people in Australia food has become a discretionary spend. After paying rent, electricity and transport, many low income families have very little left for food or clothing each month. One “emergency bill” for health, a car repair, or loss of job often results in a family going hungry. Food insecurity in Australia has hit a crisis point. Foodbank is Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation, providing 63 million meals a year to over 2,600 charities and 1,750 schools. Over 15 million meals a year are provided to people in need in NSW and ACT. Each year Foodbank distributes over 35 million kilograms of food and
groceries – that’s the equivalent of over 172,000 meals a day. Foodbank accounts for 70 per cent of all the food distributed to charities by food rescue organisations in Australia. Foodbank works with the entire Australian food and grocery industry including farmers, wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers. They create food hampers which means a family that can sit together, enjoy a meal and take a break from food insecurity. To help families with food on the table at Christmas, Foodbank NSW & ACT needs our help. Consider donating to provide food hampers to families going without this Christmas by visiting foodbanknsw. org.au/christmas. The hampers are packed by a team of volunteers, which keeps costs low and means they can stretch donations further to deliver maximum impact to families doing it tough. With our help Foodbank NSW & ACT can bring some joy to those who may go without.

Life changing donations Penrith’s Music For Life ball has now raised over $400,000 for brain cancer fight EMILY NEWTON
fter a marvellous night at this year’s Music For Life ball, Ann Willmington is delighted to announce it will be back again next year. The support of the local community saw over 400 guests in attendance, with $90,995 raised to help research treatments and cures for brain cancer. Brain Cancer survivor and Founder of Music For Life, Mrs Willmington is on a mission to help find a cure for brain cancer however she can. “In 2008 I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and I was told I had about 18 months to live,” she said. “Personally I didn’t listen to what they told me. The first operation was in Penrith hospital and I was in for 14 days. “Dr Nair, who did my surgery, told me the tumor was bigger than expected and he said that there was only one person who may be able to help me, Dr Charlie Teo.” After her first meeting with Dr Teo, she was unsure of what to do because of the high risk involved. “I asked Charlie what he would do, he asked if I have kids, I said ‘yes’,” she recalled.
A
Penrith Mayor John Thain, Wayne Willmington, Marcella Zemanek, Ann Willmington, Linda Kemp and Genevieve Teo. Photo: Emily Newton “Charlie said the options are that if you don’t have the operation you definitely won’t see your kids after 12 months or with the operation you may be in a wheelchair, you may be paralysed, but you will see your kids. “I had the operation and it was a success. This tumor was not cancer.” But four years later, Dr Teo found that
the tumor had come back, so Mrs Willmington went in for her third surgery. “This time it came back as cancer, so I had to go through chemo and radiation,” she said. “I am now committed to help raising money so we can find a cure for this terrible disease.” Thanks to the dedication of Mrs Willm-
ington, Music For Life has now raised a total of $411,168. This year’s funds raised will see the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation receive $23,495 as well as The Charlie Teo Foundation receiving $67,500. Next year’s gala ball, A Night to Remember, will be held on Saturday, October 27 in the marquee at Penrith Panthers.

Penrith RSL is getting behind the Learning Links Reading for Life Program
Penrith RSL gets behind plan to help improve reading skills EMILY NEWTON
The artwork now on display in Cambridge Park EMILY NEWTON
ambridge Park has become even more beautiful as it’s now home to Penrith Council’s most recent Local Charm project. The addition of a stunning piece of wall art that reflects the area was created in collaboration with the local community. Penrith Mayor John Thain said the artwork is a vibrant part of the neighbourhood. “Each Local Charm project has resulted
C
in a really special and colourful centrepiece for the community,” he said. “And Cambridge Park, in particular, saw eager involvement from local businesses, especially Century 21 who have let us use their wall, Stage 3 students at Cambridge Park Primary School, and keen local residents, who worked together to make this artwork, that is well beyond what we expected.” Cambridge Park is the second suburb after Colyton to get the Local Charm treatment. Londonderry will be the next suburb to undergo a charming makeover.
eading is one of the most important skills that a child will ever learn. Sadly, many young children struggle with learning difficulties and a lack of resources that prevents them from improving their skills. But the charity Learning Links provides children and young people who have learning difficulties with the skills, services and support to help them to reach their full potential. Penrith RSL Club CEO Neel Chand is thrilled to sponsor the Learning Links Reading for Life Program next year.

Art project gives Cambridge Park a special Local Charm
“We have some staff members that are going to participate as volunteers, but we would love to get members of our local community involved as well,” he said. “We believe it’s really important to help these children that are having difficulties so that they will have the best opportunities for success later in life.” The program works by training volunteer reading buddies to work with the children. The reading buddies visit each child once a week for 10 to 15 weeks using fun activities and games to encourage their engagement and interest while building their literacy skills, self-esteem and confidence. urry friends across NSW recently battled it out to be crowned the cutest pet of them all. And while there was some tough competition, there could only be one winner. That winner was Erskine Park pooch, Remi, who was recently announced as the winner of Petbarn’s Puppy and Kitten of the Year competition. Receiving an impressive 596 votes,
F
Remi beat thousands to be crowned the cutest puppy in the state. Remi’s owner, Sandra Alessio, said her furry friend deserved to win Petbarn’s Puppy and Kitten of the Year competition after the happiness she has brought to the family. “Remi is the missing piece to our family puzzle,” she said. “She has helped with depression and anxiety, and the love and happiness she brings to this family is priceless.” Over 5,300 puppy and kitten owners nominated their pets for the contest.

Threepeat worth cheering about NATHAN TAYLOR
inning three titles in a row is near impossible in any sport but kids from Excite Dance and Cheer have done just that at last month’s Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASTCF) Nationals in Melbourne. The Glenmore Park-based studio sent 62 members to Australia’s largest cheerleading competition, including junior, youth and senior teams as well as a group of jazz dancers. For the third straight year, juniors from Excite Dance and Cheer performed exceptionally to be crowned Grand Champions – an incredibly rare feat for the sport. Excite Dance and Cheer Owner and Principal Teacher, Kerry Richardson, said she was blown away by the talent of her junior stars. “This year our juniors weren’t just undefeated in their level but they were also undefeated Grand Champions,” she said. “This means that at every competition they competed in this year, they took out first place. “To be undefeated Grand Champions all year is a huge deal, and then to also get the ‘threepeat’, it’s very rare for that to
W
NEW NEW E
happen. I have to pinch myself to think how blessed we all are.” On top of their historic win, the juniors also won a place in next year’s prestigious Summit competition, which will be held at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. “Because the juniors were Grand Champions, they received a bid to Summit, which is an invitational event involving teams from the US and across the world,” Ms Richardson said. “This is the first year international teams have been invited, so we will be one of the first Aussie teams to take part.” Also performing well in Melbourne was the local studio’s Youth team, who placed first and were crowned National Champions, while their Senior team placed third and Open Jazz Ladies team finished fourth. Ms Richardson said it was an “amazing” but “roller-coaster” weekend full of ups and downs. “We had a legality on one day that cost our Senior team the Grand Champions title, and we also had a fall, which cost another team,” she said. But despite the challenges, Ms Richardson said what her small team was able to achieve was very inspiring.

Drama classes give aspiring stage and screen stars a better shot at stardom LAUREN SUTTIE
fter spending his whole life performing in theatre, local resident Anthony Brown has decided to share his wealth of knowledge with local aspiring actors. After the realisation that there were no acting courses for adults in western Sydney, Mr Brown decided to start his own classes through his theatre company, Ruby Productions. “I thought I’ve got this space so I’ll start up a drama school and give it a shot to see how it goes,” he said. Despite being a shy child growing up, Mr Brown knew from a young age that acting was what he wanted to do. “When I was a little boy, you wouldn’t know it now, but I was so shy I couldn’t look anyone in the eye,” he said. “We had an old black and white television set and we would watch the old black and white movies, and I just loved getting lost in a story and the characters and that’s when my love of theatre started.” Since then, Mr Brown has been in countless productions, both acting and directing, and now he wants to help others realise their potential. “That’s what I love about theatre, it’s personal growth, you learn so much about yourself,” Mr Brown said. Penrith has produced plenty of talented actors who are performing on stages not only in Australia but around the world, however most of them learned their craft outside of the local area. While local high schools are now more dedicated to the performing arts, lessons outside of the school environment are often hard to come by and talented actors miss out on opportunities. The beginners course, which starts in early 2018, will run once a week for three hours and will explore an actor’s life,

Actors get chance to learn their craft locally
Owner of Ruby Productions, Anthony Brown, is presenting an acting course early next year. Photo: Melinda Jane working on projection, as well as how to develop a character. And while Mr Brown said that the classes aren’t just for aspiring actors, but are for anyone wanting to gain more confidence, he warned that those lucky enough to secure a spot would be tested. “They will need to get out of their comfort zone because in order to grow, you have to face your demons and I’m very good at giving people those,” he laughed.
“It’s about personal growth, you learn so much about yourself”
“It’s going to be challenging for those interested in coming along to give it a try. They need to know that they will be pushed and they will be challenged.” Many locals would already know Ruby Productions from the many performances the theatre company puts on for local audiences each year. For more information on the course, call 4735 5422 or visit www.rubyproductions. com.au.
Skating show goes global LAUREN SUTTIE
ocal ice skaters are set to take audiences on an adventure around the globe as they present their end of year show ‘Around the World in 80 Blades’. Filled with humour, world-class skating, spectacular costumes and great music, Team Manager of Sydney Ice Theatre, Maureen Vickery, said the show is enjoyable for the whole family. “This year’s show is about a trip, we’ve got a group of retirement home residents who escape and travel around different parts of the world to see different things,” she said.
L Local ice skaters Bill Ritchie, Milan Aubrecht and John Keily. Photo: Gareth Bown
“So the programs are basically a tour around the world, you’ve got French themed programs, some from India and American, and it’s a mix of different music.” With their youngest skater just nine years of age and their older skaters ranging from 70 onwards, the skaters who make up the Sydney Ice Theatre are no strangers to performing to big audiences, having represented Australia in five different international competitions. Skater Emily Feszczuk has been skating for the past 10 years with the theatre and said the annual end of year shows are a chance where they can let their hair down after a busy season competing.
“We put on a show usually at the end of the year just for fun and to show everyone what we have been doing throughout the year,” she said. “It’s also great to involve the different theatrical skating teams from around the area and get them all together and show off what we really love about skating.” Joining in the fun will be other teams such as Stage Left and Edgehogs as well as IStage from Macquarie Ice Skating Club. Locals will be able to see the show at Penrith Ice Palace on Saturday, December 9 at 4pm and Sunday, December 10 at 5pm. Those wishing to attend should dress warm and bring cash to purchase tickets on the night.

hat are you like at letting go? Can you recognise when something is not working and walk away? In this past year I have been involved in several projects that have fizzled out, after a lot of time and effort, and in one case money. Fortunately, not mine. There is the temptation to think that because time, effort and money have been put into a project – a service or product – that it has to be pursued to the bitter end, that more time and more money, a restructuring of the organisation or better marketing strategy perhaps, will ensure success, eventually. Psychologists call this the ‘sunk cost fallacy’. The attitude is this: We have invested too much time, effort and money into this to turn back. We have to keep going even if the path we are pursuing is heading towards a cliff. To quote a line from the film ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’: “Things always work out in the end, and if they are not working out then it is not yet the end”. But of course things don’t always work out. Some ideas and some relation-
ships are duds. The ‘sunk cost fallacy’ keeps people for too long in poor jobs, unhappy marriages and failing businesses. It is in our interests to recognise the signs that something is not working and be able to walk away. Not with a sense of failure. But with a sense of moving forward and freeing up space in our lives for other things to happen. To quote Nelson Mandela: “I never lose. I either win or I learn”. We need to learn the wisdom of letting go. Life is too short. We don’t have time and heartbeats to waste. What can you let go of today?

ike many industries, public relations (PR) has been disrupted. Many traditional channels have been automated bypassing public relations consultants. We live in a world of change, and it’s sad when jobs are lost, but we must accept change. Regularly conducting SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) helps us to adjust to changes, before becoming obsolete. Access to publicity – Sourcebottle Sourcebottle connects those that need information, with providers of information. One of my clients responded to such a request and wrote a chapter for a book (some requests are quick tips). In under two months she was a published author holding her book! Although not paid, she didn’t pay to be an author. The media release and the angle Media releases are proven ways to obtain publicity. If you have something happening, especially where there is a feel good factor, overcoming the odds story, or community hand up story, then prepare and issue a media release. Write in third person, but include some quotes to grab attention. Include a high quality
photo(s) of you and/or the situation that could be published. Publicity is all about the angle. You could send out generic media releases and get nothing. However prepare a release targeted at their audience and angled in a way their audience clearly relates to, using the right way to contact (some editors prefer to be called first, some emailed) then you can gain a positive response. You can also provide articles that can be on standby when they need to fill a gap, timely articles when certain events occur or even write a column. Use a PR person or agency If you’re not getting traction or don’t have the time, then hire a PR person or agency. Some PR services may include social media management. YouTube, social media and going viral Social proof helps you get noticed. YouTube and ‘Insta’ sensations get more air time because they went viral. A decluttering podcast commenced between two ladies, and struck the right nerve. They leapt up the podcast charts which earned them television interviews.

aving recently finished a sold out Australian tour with his band The Tea Party, adopted Aussie Jeff Martin is set to get personal with audiences this New Year’s Eve. Playing an exclusive one-off show at the iconic Hawkesbury Hotel in Windsor, Jeff will be joined by long-time friends, Lepers & Crooks and Matt Boylan Smith, as they spend the night reflecting on the shenanigans that they got up to while recording at Jeff’s Riverhouse in Byron Bay. “There is a fresh water river that is immediately right behind my house that you can travel quite a way and you can end up at some waterfalls,” Jeff mused. “I remember the Lepers took two of my rubber rafts and even though they were only meant to be gone for 45 minutes, they also took a couple of boxes of caskets of wine with them and just like the good pirates that they were, they didn’t end up coming back for another three hours. “We could hear them coming back on the river all the way, just signing songs – it was very funny.” Completely different to playing in front

of thousands of fans with The Tea Party, Jeff said that playing a small acoustic show like this will give fans an intimate night they won’t forget. “My acoustic shows have always been very intense that’s for sure and a bit of an emotional roller coaster for the audience as there is a lot of story telling that goes on,” he said. “I enjoy the diversity, obviously the Lepers are more rock and roll and Matt is more of a story teller, and I embrace both of those things because they are part of my own personal music make up.” Jeff promised that audiences won’t forget the night in a hurry. “It’s going to be a very diverse night of music that’s for sure and I promise that it will be a night to remember,” he said. As for The Tea Party, who just celebrated the 20th anniversary of their pivotal record ‘Transmission’, Jeff said fans can expect some new sounds in the very near future. “There is new single that will be coming in February and then there might be something coming up in Australia sooner than we think but I can’t really let the cat out of the bag,” he hinted. Join Jeff Martin in a night of revelry and reflection at the Hawkesbury Hotel in Windsor on Sunday, December 31, with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets start from $55.10 per person. PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF LIFESTYLE EXPERTS
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
your horoscopes
You’re keen to escape somewhere soon. But – with Mercury reversing through your travel zone – expect delays and disruptions before you take off. Plenty of patience and thorough planning are the keys. On the weekend you’ll feel motivated and inspired, as you do things in your own highly individual way. And you could have a brilliant light-bulb moment. But you could also make a rash decision that sees you jump into the fire!
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Penny-pinching Saturn and retrograde Mercury are visiting your ‘money-fromothers’ zone, so financial matters are on your mind and your favourite word at the moment is (or should be) ‘thrifty’. If you’re expecting funds from others, be prepared to wait. And, if someone else is managing your money, make sure you have your finger on the pulse and know exactly what’s going on.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Joanne Madeline Moore Daily posts at www.bohoastro.com twitter @JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2017
Gregarious Geminis love nothing better than a good old chin-wag. But – with Mercury in retro mode – garrulous gossip and indiscreet chatter could get you into gigantic trouble. So think things through and choose your words wisely. Smart Twins will keep the channels of communication wide open, and be philosophical and realistic about a current challenge. Saturday is a fabulous time to surprise your partner with a special treat.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Avoid being a clingy and complacent. It’s time to be independent and make progressive decisions on your own. If you stick to old ideas and outdated routines, then stagnation will set in. But if you are open to changes and communicate in innovative ways, then lucky opportunities will follow. As Richard Branson said: “Every success story is a tale of constant adaptation, revision and change”.
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Single? Don’t go looking for love in the same old places. Be adventurous and cast your net wide. The more unconventional a potential partner is, the better. Already attached? Love won’t flourish unless you add a fresh ingredient to the romance menu. If you do, then you’ll both feel re-energised and the relationship will sparkle and shine. It’s also a good week to set gigantic goals and dream big dreams for the future.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
There’s so much happening involving home and family this week that it will be hard to keep on top of everything. Others are relying on you, so don’t promise more than you can comfortably deliver. And don’t be too set about how the week should proceed. Some unpredictable Uranus spontaneity is just what the doctor ordered. It will stop you from being too cautious – and critical!
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Mercury is reversing through the area of your horoscope that rules the Internet, education and all forms of communication. So you may encounter problems at work or school; with online trolls; or with unpleasant people on social media. Don’t waste time worrying or retaliating! As birthday great Taylor Swift reminds us “Haters gonna hate”. Just shake it off and get on with the business of living a big and beautiful Libran life.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Are you stuck in a Scorpio rut? With unpredictable Uranus stirring up your horoscope, overdue changes to your daily routine will put an extra pep in your workday step. And take a close look at your personal values. Do you need to let go of certain people, possessions or attitudes that have passed their used-by date? But be careful that your main form of entertainment isn’t shopping.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
This week will work best if you do something completely out of character for a spontaneous Sagittarian – think before you speak. Otherwise your tendency to put your foot in your mouth could land you in heaps of hot water. You’ll also require the freedom to experiment and explore – and look out anyone who gets in the way! So it’s a wonderful week to express yourself creatively or go on a grand adventure with a loved one.

CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Are wonderful things happening to everyone else? Do you feel overlooked and under-appreciated? Avoid being a cranky and carping critic Capricorn. With the Sun, Venus, Saturn and retro Mercury visiting your seclusion zone, success has certainly been slowed down. But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. Strive to be patiently persistent, and take a long-term view. Your time will come!
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
You’ll feel restless and your boredom threshold will be at an all-time low. You’re definitely not in the mood to be told what to do. So make sure you have an exciting project to channel all that excess energy into, otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy with your wild and wacky ways. On Saturday the Sun trines your ruler Uranus, which activates your adventurous side. And if you’re rebellious, make sure you’re a rebel with a good cause.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
You need to be extra careful with cash this week. You’re feeling impulsive and won’t require much encouragement to shop up a storm, as the Sun and Uranus boost your pre-festive spirits and your spontaneous spending gene. So be careful you don’t blow a big hole in your budget. With four planets visiting your professional and reputation zone, you’ll be in the public eye over the festive season.

The heartworm warning all dog owners should listen to
pets
Heartworm can ultimately be fatal to your dog. Early intervention is critical...
Nicole McMillan Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
Recently we discussed intestinal worms. Heartworm is another parasite that can easily be forgotten and is very difficult to treat but easy to prevent. Adult heartworm live within the hearts and blood vessels of the lungs of affected dogs. They can become very large, about 30cm long! They produce microscopic baby worms that circulate in the blood stream. When an infected dog is bitten by a mosquito some of the circulating worms are picked up with the blood. When the mosquito bites another dog, the worms are deposited onto the skin of the dog in the mosquito saliva. They develop within the skin of the dog and then pass into the blood stream. They move to the heart and lungs and grow into adult worms. There are several factors that impact on heartworm survival and development, these include the presence of mosquitos, the presence of infected dogs, the humidity and temperature. Heartworm is typically seen in warm and humid regions. Heartworm are very slow to develop. It takes about six months for a baby worm to grow into an adult. If a dog only has a few worms in the heart, there are normally no obvious clinical signs of infection.
The heartworm produce factors that cause inflammation and increase the risk of clot formation. Initially they impede blood flow but as numbers increase they can completely block blood flow from the heart. This is fatal. Clinical signs may include exercise intolerance, coughing, and fainting. Dogs can be screened for infection with a simple blood test. The test will only detect adult females, so if a dog has had recent exposure, testing is done six months after the first exposure and repeated six months later. If a dog has clinical signs of heartworm infection there will also be obvious changes of the heart and blood vessels on thoracic radiographs and often the microfilaria can be detected under a microscope in the blood sample. Heartworm are susceptible to many medications but if a substantial number are in the heart, simply killing them is not the answer. As the heartworm die the bodies break apart and can cause life threatening allergic reactions and blood clots. Treatment includes measured slow amounts of medication to kill the worms gradually and medications to counteract the risk of reactions and clot formation. Cats can be infected with heartworm, but it is a parasite
that has evolved to infect dogs. Heartworm will often develop abnormally in the cat. They rarely develop to adults that move to the heart. The problem is caused by the baby worms migrating through the body. Typically, they cause inflammation in the lungs. Affected cats often present with asthma like symptoms and are also more likely to form clots. If a worm does reach adulthood a single worm in the cat’s heart can cause severe clinical signs. Blood testing is available for cats, but it can be much harder to diagnose. Effective prevention products are available for pets. Most products work by killing the baby heartworm before they develop into adults. Some products will also kill the adults.

ustralian winemakers seem to have learnt from their sins of the past as far as chardonnay is concerned, when they seemed chiefly concerned about seeing how much oak they could imbue their wines with. Maybe it was all part of the learning curve and maybe hence it was natural and meaningful. Unfortunately it also resulted in the creation of what became known as the ABC syndrome among winelovers — Anything But Chardonnay. Some smart winemakers — such as Andrew Koerner, of Blue Pyrenees Estate, in western Victoria’s Pyrenees — completely avoided the trap. Others fell for it big time, with the result that they did themselves and the industry a great deal of harm. There has been a drive for a few years now to undo the damage that quite possibly led the world to beat a path to New Zealand sauvignon blanc. And that’s a very good thing, because chardonnay is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest white varieties — one quite capable of making a range of complex wines that suit our life styles. Let’s just hope that it isn’t too late. Though there is some residual action from the ABC contingent, I sense that drinkers are finding a new passion for chardonnay. I never lost mine, and instead found chardonnays that weren’t excessively oaky. WINE REVIEW Blue Pyrenees Estate 2017 Bone-Dry Pinot Noir Rosé ($22, pictured): At this time of year, restaurant tables should be packed with this type of refreshing chilled drink. It’s dry, it’s balanced and it tastes good. Ask no more.

The festive season is fun, but it can also be an expensive time of year. Keeping track of your spending is vital...
Alex McKenzie Principal Financial Planner Future Financial Services futurefinancialservices.com.au
I love the festive season! From Melbourne Cup to Australia Day, it seems to be a procession of parties, BBQs and events – all the stuff I love. It is also a time that many of us go on holidays and let’s not forget all the Christmas presents. What a great time of year! Did I mention I LOVE it?! It is also the most expensive time of year. If you are not careful, it can have negative financial consequences. Overspending is all too common at this time of year, often compounded by funding the overspending by inefficient methods. Controlling spending levels is always a challenge, at this time of year it can be a near impossibility. The key is planning, set budgets, monitor spending and stick to it. Be realistic, try to predict likely behaviour and set budgets accordingly. If in the previous five years you took a cab home from the work Christmas party after planning to get the train, chances are you’ll do it again this year, so budget for it. There are likely to be some areas you can cut costs. Do you really need to buy a new
outfit for each event? Can you forego the blow dry or spray tan? Can you arrange to share a cab? Can you have a Kris Kringle instead of buying everyone a present or set price limits on gifts? Reducing spending need not interfere with having a great time. However, there are likely to be areas that you can reduce costs without reducing the things that are important to you. The other area where people go wrong is funding the Christmas period. Too often people go into debt to pay for Christmas presents or the annual holiday. Quite often this is credit card debt with high interest rates making it difficult to pay
the debt off. This negatively impacts cashflow moving forward. The best option is to acknowledge that the festive season is likely to be expensive and plan in advance. The simplest method is to calculate how much extra you will spend over that period, and commence a savings plan to ensure you have sufficient funds come Christmas time. Spreading the cost throughout the year also helps. This may involve buying presents throughout the year or prepaying for holidays. Christmas is a great time of year and should be enjoyed with family and friends!

You can go all out with the jingle bell earrings or what about that light up Rudolph brooch that everyone at work wears? For a more subtle approach on getting in on the festive season, try these unique tips. Christmas holidays never looked so good! Metallics are always festive. Whenever I see glossy silver or bright gold I instantly think Christmas. Rose gold, however, is the real game changer. You can incorporate it into your look and around the home through stationary or maybe a watch as a gift? My favourite way though to take rose gold into the holidays is with hair. Look out for De Lorenzo NovaFusion colour care shampoo in rose gold, this fairy floss pink shampoo tones lighter hair to a beautiful rose metallic colour. After you have finished wrapping those Christmas presents for your family and friends, pay close attention to what ribbon you have to use. Just like a little bow on a wrapped present makes all the difference, did you know you can save the same ribbon and tie around your waist for a chic festive twist? If you are wearing a white summer dress for that afternoon party pick out a slim gold ribbon!
Red lipstick. There is a perfect shade to suit everyone, if you have fairer tones go for a burgundy berry red; if you have glorious olive skin pick out a brighter orange red toned lippy. Try Napoleon Perdis Mattetastic Lipstick in the colour Veronica.
The trick to making your lips last through dinner and drinks is all about the preparation. Start off by exfoliating lips for a smooth even canvass. At Westfield Penrith I love the chocolate lip scrub at Lush, it’s even safe to eat!

Common arthritis still has plenty of mystery around it

None of us want our kids to be in pain, which is why we need to talk about J.I.A...
Amy Meekings Podiatrist OnePoint Health 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (J.I.A) is a common form of arthritis that occurs within children under the age of 16-yearsold. The term ‘idiopathic’ is used within the medical presentation to indicate that there is no known origin or cause. J.I.A is still not a condition that is commonly recognised, and it has every reason to be so. Currently the incidence rate of J.I.A is 1-2 in every 1000 children. This is in comparison to 1/1000 children have Diabetes Mellitus and 1.3/1000 children with Cerebral Palsy, both in which are two conditions well known. Injury occurs from J.I.A through an auto-immune response. The human body’s immune system has a remarkable skill to constantly fight foreign matter, such as bacteria. For some individuals, the immune system attacks itself causing inflammation which is damaging. Signs and symptoms of J.I.A include pain of joint movement, heat, swelling and stiffness. A key feature of J.I.A over other mechanical causes of pain is stiffness

Our success in life and our studies is already programmed into our DNA. The secret is unlocking the potential and finding the key... Our philosophy includes the belief that: • All children love to learn • Every child has unlimited potential to achieve Our belief structure is supported in literature by Maxwell Maltz, Psycho Cybernetics and by Colin Rose, Accelerated Learning. Psycho Cybernetics uses the power of subconscious mind, the part that scientists now believe holds up to 90 per cent of our mental capacities. If you want to achieve success in any goal you must first program your subconscious mind to give you direction, then you can be sure that your progress is bringing you closer to your goal. I have used the technique throughout my teaching career, both in the classroom and on the sporting field. In three different high schools, as sports master, I presided over the most successful school in school carnivals.
In the classroom I had mathematics students gain the HSC merit list in mathematics in every school in which I taught (there are 600+ high schools in NSW and only 50 students are placed on the merit list.) In April 1999, I was hired by Kurri Kurri High School to “motivate” their staff and students. Kurri Kurri High School regularly finished last in HSC results for the 10 high schools in the Newcastle area. In the 1999 High School examinations, Kurri Kurri High School was the highest ranked school on HSC results in the Newcastle area. I would like to include the following testimonial from Di Soltau, the leading teacher at the school. “Kurri Kurri High School parents, students and staff are indebted to Mr Bob Ollis for his leadership, motivation and inspiration in working with Year 12 1999,” he said. “Kurri Kurri High School is a disadvantaged school, which caters for a full range of abilities. He provided inspiration for students in their preparation for the Higher School Certificate to challenge the boundaries and lift their aspirations to extraordinary levels of achievement.” Our success is already programmed into our DNA; Master Coaching unlocks that success.
within a child as well as pain during the morning. Podiatry is one of the many health professionals that contribute to the management of children with J.I.A. Functional foot orthoses, footwear modifications, addressing leg length discrepancies and exercises are possible implemented treatments. Potentially we may also be the first clinician a child sees regarding pain prediagnosis. J.I.A not only causes chronic pain, but
restricts a child’s ability to engage in physical activity and this has further implications. Children need to be, and deserve to be able to engage in life to allow for growth and development. Accurate diagnosis and the implementation of treatment enhances a child’s life who is living with J.I.A. There is a magnitude of causes of pain within a child and therefore appropriate assessment is important to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Something better may have already arrived in your life! Sometimes when we wait for something, we miss the real excitement happening now...
Rev John Lavender www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook
Layla is a gorgeous 6 month old girl who has found herself needing a new home after no owner has come to collect her. She is a happy natured girl that loves everyone and will sit nicely for a treat when asked. Layla is avaliable for Adoption now so come and meet her anytime during open hours.
All of us are waiting for something. For holidays. For school to finish. For life to take a turn for the better. Waiting for Christmas! In the years leading up to the birth of Jesus, there was a great sense of expectation in ancient Israel. Life was not as it should be. Yet, the people knew that God had promised to turn things around. The Bible tells us about Simeon, a man who “was waiting for Israel to be saved”. When Simeon first saw Jesus shortly after his birth, he knew that his wait was over. We read how when Simeon saw Jesus, he cried out to God in prayer, “With my own eyes I have seen your salvation”. Simeon knew that in sending Jesus, God had kept his promise. A new hope had been born; light and life had come to the world. Now at last, Simeon had peace! As we read these words from the Bible, we know that for so many of the things for which we wait, they will not bring the relief for which we were hoping. Holidays will come, but in a few short weeks we will be back at work! The rush
Hurricane came into the Shelter as a stray, although he is chipped & desexed no one has come for him. He is a gorgeous 6-year-old boy that sits for a treat and has a lovely personality. He will be available for Adoption from the 16th of December, but you can come and meet him now and put your name down for Adoption.
This lovely lady came into the Shelter with her two kittens (they are also looking for a home) and after raising her babies she is now ready to find a loving Forever Home for herself. She is friendly but also finds being around so many other cats quite overwhelming. If you are after a young beautiful girl to add to your home, she is waiting for you!
of Christmas will be over, but the rush of something else will soon be here! While many people are waiting for something better, they miss the real life that is found in Jesus. You don’t have to wait for Christmas to
Judith has been at the shelter four weeks now and would love to meet her new family. She is a happy, friendly girl that has a lot of love to offer her new owners. At only two years of age she is still a young lady that loves to play and run. If you are looking for a Forever Companion please come and meet Judith.
celebrate the birth of Jesus, the one who was born to save us, to give us peace and real hope. Today, you can look to Jesus and put your hope in him, and like Simeon, you too can know that your wait is over!
At just 12 months old this striking tabby girl has found herself homeless. She is a friendly cat that loves a pat and would love to find a loving new home. There are many cats out there needing a home so please come and meet all the gorgeous felines just like this one at the Shelter who are homeless through no fault of their own.
This girl is so stunning, just look at those markings! Sadly she isn’t coping well in the Shelter environment being around so many other cats so we would love her to find a Forever Home where she will be the only cat or have just one other cat. She is avaliable for Adoption now so come and meet her.
We always recommend bringing your own dogs to the shelter to meet any of the shelter dogs.
The shelter is in need of toys, blankets (not doonas or pillows though), treats and coats for large dogs. Please contact the shelter if you can help.

Don’t get distracted at this busy time of the year If your kids are around water, they need to be your primary focus...
Julie Fletcher Nepean Swim and Fitness julie@nepeanswim.com.au nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au and on Facebook
This means no online shopping on the mobile or checking out all the beautiful Christmas decorating ideas on Instagram while supervising the children swimming in the pool. This means ignoring the arrival of a package at the front door while bathing the kids. It means having a designated adult pool supervisor at every backyard BBQ or pool party, and emptying ice buckets and eskys when the ice has melted. It means avoiding alcohol when swimming, and when responsible for children swimming. It means fencing inflatable pools that are dragged out of storage as the weather warms up. And it means accompanying your child to pool parties or other aquatic events to supervise them, as much as we could all use that few hours to do some Christmas shopping! When it comes to my children and water, the responsibility for their supervision is ultimately mine. It also may be tempting to put the children’s activities on hold to save time and money in the busy lead up to Christmas, but consistency is hugely important for children when learning to swim, so please prioritise your child’s swimming lesson no matter what else is going on. In the grand scheme of things, it could be the most important half hour of your week. Please, stay safer this summer!
I love summer, and December is my favourite month of the year! The countdown to Christmas is on, and there are lots of opportunities to have fun in the sun and in the pool. However, I also feel anxious coming into summer. At a time when most of us are celebrating, I can’t help but reflect on the senseless loss of life we saw last summer, and think of the families of the 22 drowning victims in NSW alone between December 10 2016 to January 3 2017, who are now approaching the one year anniversary of losing their loved one. December is a particularly dangerous month. We are all busy, rushed and stressed, jugging multiple Christmas parties and commitments, shopping, and getting ready for the big day. This is particularly true for parents of small children, as we all want to make our child’s Christmas magical and perfect. However, when it comes to water safety, we just can’t afford to get distracted by all the extra noise and tasks that surround us at this time of year. We must remind ourselves to always put safety first.

oyota’s all-new Camry sedan, launched late last month, has undergone a dramatic redesign from bumper to bumper that results in a premium, high-quality car focused on performance and technology. The latest Camry is built on a new platform that underpins more emotional styling, new powertrains with higher power and better fuel economy, a revamped chassis that sharpens driving dynamics and advanced new safety technologies. Eighth-generation Camry represents a new era for Toyota in Australia – the first time in 30 years that Toyota has offered a fully imported Camry range to the Australian market. The new model is from Japan. Camry is the first sedan to adopt Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), which has transformed the way Toyota vehicles are designed, engineered and packaged. TNGA enables greater freedom in design, resulting in a more athletic profile with a lower roof and bonnet, a better driving position and improved dynamics due to its lower centre of gravity and greater torsional rigidity. There are a raft of Camry firsts: direct fuel-injection engines, fully independent rear suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, drive mode select, LED head lamps, an electric parking brake, 10-inch head-up display and a segment-first opening panoramic roof.

such as the Nepean District Women’s Bowls Club, Nepean Therapy Dogs, St Marys Local Area Command, St Marys Vietnam Veteran Outpost, Operation Christmas Child, Jeans for Genes Day and more. So, the next time you are purchasing a new car or servicing your vehicle, ask the staff member what causes the dealership supports, it may help you make your decision, plus it’s always good to know that you’re dealing with a company that cares. You can also find this information by looking at the dealership’s website, or checking their social media pages. Getting back to this Christmas, we still need your help. One of the biggest Christmas fundraisers of the year is the Smith Family Christmas Toy and Book Appeal, and this year a new partner has come on board to help. FCA Australia have turned all their dealerships across the country into drop-off points for toy and book donations, to help receive over 100,000 books and toys to children in need. You can drop off your donations at our Jeep and Chrysler dealership up until December 22. Check our website for details on donations and the location.

ment, love and fun, the Christmas season also brings with it a reminder to everyone of those less fortunate that need our help. While we are shopping for gifts for our friends and family, a lot of us also use this reminder to give a donation or two to charities that need our help. But what about the rest of the year? And what about those of us who just can’t afford to give either our time, or any gifts or money to charity? Well during the year you might have actually helped out charities along the way without even realising. I’ve written before about what to look for when buying a car in terms of finance, prices, dealership reputation, etc, but another thing you may want to consider, that you may not have thought about, is how the dealership you are purchasing from helps out those in need. For example, at our dealership, what you may not know about are all the causes we donate to, we are a major sponsor of the Arnott’s Foundation. We give away two cars every year to the Foundation which helps them raise thousands of dollars for Camp Quality. We also support numerous other charities and local community foundations

Thunder set to strike NATHAN TAYLOR
enrith Cricket Club all-rounder Naomi Stalenberg believes her side – the Sydney Thunder – are the team to beat when action in the third Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season kicks off this weekend. The Thunder, who finished a disappointing sixth last season after winning the title in the inaugural year, will battle the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers in a double header this Saturday and Sunday at North Sydney Oval. Speaking from a pre-season camp in Bowral this week, the 23-year-old said while any team has the chance to take out this year’s crown, the Thunder have a line-up that will put fear into a lot of sides. “Any team has the ability and the players to take the trophy home but I definitely think we are the team to beat,” Stalenberg told the Weekender. “Without being biased I think we’ve got the best line-up going around. But anyone could take it home, it’s just about who performs on the day and who strings together enough wins to make it to the Finals.” Along with Stalenberg, the Thunder boast a side made up of top Australian and international players including captain Alex Blackwell, Rachael Haynes, Stefanie Taylor, Harmanpreet Kaur and Nicola Carey. Earlier this week, West Indies captain Stefanie Taylor re-signed with the Thunder for a further two seasons.

SEASON’S GREETINGS from Carwise LDV
Local cricket fans will get to see the Thunder’s top level talent live when they take on the Melbourne Stars at Howell Oval in Penrith next Saturday, December 16. The afternoon match will be a huge treat for fans who have had the pleasure of welcoming the Thunder girls to town for the past two seasons. Stalenberg said she wants to see plenty of fans in the crowd when the Thunder take to the local pitch. “Our side has a great display of international cricketers and we like to produce an aggressive and competitive brand of cricket,” she said. “I think it’s definitely worth coming down to watch and enjoying some WBBL. It should be a really good game against the Stars, who also boast a really good team. “It’s set to be a top match-up and it will be really enjoyable for people to come and watch.” One local player who will be missing from the Thunder ranks this season is rising star Mikayla Hinkley, who signed with the Perth Scorchers in the offseason. While Stalenberg will miss her club teammate in lime green, she is wishing nothing but the best for the 19-year-old. “I think it’s really good for her to move on and get an opportunity for herself,” she said. “It’s also good for Cricket NSW to have so many cricketers playing around the country. “I think it will be fun to play against Mikayla and we’ll enjoy the rivalry.”

Famous beard set to go New-look Mansour on the cards if $10,000 target can be reached NATHAN TAYLOR
osh Mansour has one of the most iconic faces in the NRL, now the Panthers and Kangaroos winger is set to lose his trademark facial accessory all for a good cause. The new father has committed to shaving off his iconic beard to raise funds and awareness in the fight against bowel cancer. Last week, the 27-year-old launched ‘Sauce Shaves for a Cause’ as part of Bowel Cancer Australia’s annual Decembeard initiative. Mansour declared he will part ways with his beard when he reaches his fundraising target of $10,000 during the month of December. Bowel Cancer is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer and affects men and women of all ages. Every week 80 people lose their lives to the disease. “When I had my ACL injury earlier this year a lot of people were helping me out and I was fortunate and grateful for that, so I thought I’d give back and do some-
J
thing for others going through a tough time,” Mansour told the Weekender. “The statistics surrounding bowel cancer are very alarming, so I thought if I can raise more awareness and funds then why not do it.” Mansour said he hasn’t been clean shaven since the 2014 Four Nations Tour and wasn’t sure whether he’ll grow it back again if he has to shave it off later this month. “My facial hair grows really fast, so I wouldn’t have a problem growing it back if I decide to,” he said. “To think growing my beard all started as a bet with Wes Naiqama… it’s been my trademark ever since.” Meanwhile, Mansour has shot down reports he wants to leave Penrith following the conclusion of his current contract. Signed with the Panthers until the end of next season, Mansour will undoubtedly be in hot demand by rival clubs for 2019 and beyond. A report emerged last week suggesting Mansour wanted out of Penrith, and had instructed his manager to look elsewhere. Suitors including the Canterbury Bulldogs and Sydney Roosters were two clubs

named as being interested in the former Origin powerhouse. Mansour denied he wanted out of the club and expressed his desire to remain a Panther long-term. “That’s the first I’ve heard of it,” he said of the rumours. “I haven’t even spoken to my manager or anything. I’ve just been enjoying my time with the Aussie boys. “I’m obviously off-contract in 2019 but, at this point in time, I want to get away from footy and focus on family. “I have no intentions to leave, at this point in time I’m still a Penrith Panther and will be for the remainder of next season. Hopefully a new deal can sort itself out.” The Weekender understands that Penrith are willing to offer Mansour a new deal for 2019 and beyond, but the club is unsure whether they can match offers from rival clubs. In the meantime, Mansour is feverishly campaigning to raise funds for bowel cancer research. To donate to him, visit the Sauce Shaves for a Cause fundraising page: bit.ly/SauceShaves.

Senator Claus Christmas comes early for local sporting clubs NATHAN TAYLOR
iberal Senator for Western Sydney Marise Payne has announced $1.26 million in Federal funding, to upgrade key sporting facilities in the local area. With sports and outdoor activities a significant part of the community and social culture in Lindsay, Senator Payne said there is immense benefit for the many local sporting groups and those from other states and regions who use the facilities. Contracts have now been signed for the funding, which will be used to upgrade three popular locations in the Penrith region. Greygums Oval will receive $750,000 in funding to construct a new amenities building, including a new canteen, accessible toilet, first aid/umpires room, multiple storage rooms, club meeting room and path access. Jamison Park Netball Complex will receive $600,000 to construct netball courts, a concrete path, a car park and install floodlights.
L
Senator Marise Payne with local sporting clubs Cranebrook Little Athletics, Nepean District Netball Association, Penrith Rams and Penrith Giants at Greygums Oval in Cranebrook The Rowing Dock will also receive $270,000 to construct an extension to the rowing pontoon at Weir Reserve. “What we have seen here once again is a strong example of the Coalition government’s commitment to bringing the community together and providing the best facilities possible for the teams, groups, families and individuals who are passionate and committed to their sport of choice, and enjoy getting out and
about outdoors,” Senator Payne said. “Participation in sport spans all ages and builds many vital skills including team work, confidence, self esteem, friendships and socialisation skills along with important health benefits.” Senator Payne acknowledged the work of former Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott in advocating for the projects. Penrith Council is the proponent of the funding for all three projects.
Brandy and Freddy back together After lending a hand to help Penrith’s young halves last season, rugby league legend Greg Alexander will now turn his attention to helping an old mate in new Blues Origin coach Brad Fittler. Last Sunday, the Board of NSW Rugby League announced the appointment of Penrith’s favourite son as an advisor to Fittler ahead of the 2018 State of Origin series. Alexander will replace Peter Sterling, who vacated the advisory role following the sacking of former coach Laurie Daley. “Greg was there for me at the start. He was my captain at Penrith when we won the competition. He has been a mentor of mine for the whole of my career. He is the person who I trust most, not only about football, but about everything,” Fittler said. Alexander, who is also a Penrith Panthers Board member, said it was a “great honour” to be asked by Fittler to be involved in Origin next season. “This is an exciting time for NSW with the large number of experienced players in the team, but also because of the host of new emerging talent that there is,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with Freddy, who I think was the perfect choice to lead New South Wales into its future State of Origin campaigns.”

Maloney keen to start with Penrith Story continued from » p. 72 “Panthers has the roster and the resources to achieve success over the coming years and I’m really excited to now be part of that,” Maloney said. “The squad has a strong forward pack for me to play behind, plus some young and talented players coming through in the outside backs.” Maloney will begin training with Penrith in January. Meanwhile, Panthers prop Leilani Latu has been released from the remainder of his contract and will link up with the Gold Coast Titans on a three-year deal. The 24-year-old’s departure gave Penrith the green light to register Maloney’s contract with the NRL. He played 49 games and scored six tries for the Panthers after making his NRL debut in 2015. “Leilani came to Panthers several years ago looking for an opportunity,” Gould said. “Since that time he has worked extremely hard to become a representative class front row forward. “He has been tremendous for our club and his release from Panthers is purely a salary cap management decision. He is a great acquisition for his new club and we wish him well in the future.”
RUGBY UNION
Seventh heaven Tournament set to give rugby a boost in the Mountains NATHAN TAYLOR
fter enormous success earlier this year, the Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens returns this weekend with more teams than ever before. Held this Saturday, December 9 at Pitt Park in Wentworth Falls, the one-day competition will see 30 teams battle it out in four different divisions. 16 teams will contest the open men’s division while six teams will compete in the first ever open women’s division. The competition will also feature four youth boys teams and four youth girls teams. Tournament Director Chris Nay said he was blown away by the response to the inaugural event back in January. “It started out as a fundraising initiative for Blue Mountains Grammar School’s Rugby Club but it really turned into something bigger than we ever imagined,” he told the Weekender. “We made some major changes this time around including introducing an open women’s team. “The youth girls were really successful

Some of the captains from the 16 men’s teams competing this Saturday and, on the back of that, we had many enquiries about an open women’s division, so we delivered.” The competition’s pool stages will get underway at 8am before semi finals and finals begin in the afternoon. What makes the Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens so unique is that all teams, barring invitational teams,
have to have a link to the Blue Mountains or the greater west in order to enter. A number of Penrith-based teams are set to take part including open men’s team the Lapstone Grunts and McCarthy Catholic College, who will enter a youth boys and youth girls team. Entry to the Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens is $5.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Despite getting off to a good start, Penrith have gone down to Randwick-Petersham in Round 6 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval, Penrith scored 191 on Day 1 of action, with Ryan Gibson top scoring on 47. When play resumed on Day 2 last Saturday, RandwickPetersham were 5/94 before Daniel Sams (87) went bonkers with the bat to lead his side to victory. The visitors finished 9/261. Luke Hodges was the pick of the bowlers for Penrith taking 3/54. Penrith will look to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointment when they face Mosman in a One Day Match at Allan Border Oval this Saturday. BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have continued their good run of form, defeating Blacktown Workers in both games during Round 11 of the NSW State Baseball League competition. In the mid-week game last Wednesday night, Penrith defeated Blacktown 7-6 while last Sunday afternoon they thrashed the Workers 13-3. Penrith will now get a rest with a bye in Round 12.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: Jamisontown local Arlene Blencowe has failed in her bid to become the new featherweight champion of the world, losing to Canadian opponent Julia Budd at last weekend’s Bellator 189 in the United States. Once again another controversial split decision ruined the local mum’s chances of winning the title she had worked so hard for, with MMA commentators suggesting Blencowe was “robbed” by the judges.

Maloney brings experience NATHAN TAYLOR
he Penrith Panthers have signed dual premiership winner James Maloney for the next three seasons. The game’s worst kept secret was finally confirmed on Monday, with the club announcing the 31-year-old will be at the foot of the Mountains until the end of 2020. Maloney will partner Nathan Cleary in the halves next season after Matt Moylan was released to join Cronulla last month. Panthers boss Phil Gould said securing the signing of Maloney – who won premierships with the Roosters (2013) and Sharks (2016) – was a huge coup for the club. “James Maloney is an exciting acquisition for Panthers,” he said. “He has regularly succeeded at the highest levels of our game and brings a wealth of experience. “It’s a real vote of confidence in the potential of our club that James has chosen to play with Panthers. We are truly delighted to welcome him to Penrith.” Maloney said he was looking forward to joining a new club after success in the Shire. Story continues on » p. 70
