Colyton man who threatened to “slit” Pauline Hanson’s throat and pleaded with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to deport him to Syria so he could join ISIS has been ordered to stay behind bars.

Ciaron Patrick Mcgee was arrested and granted police bail on December 3 after allegedly using Twitter to threaten to kill and menace high profile people.

Despite being ordered not to use any communication device, the National

Security Hotline was alerted to fresh activity on Mr Mcgee’s Facebook page after concerned social media users raised the alarm.

He was subsequently arrested by the Joint Counter Terrorism Team at his Desborough Road home about 1.20pm on Wednesday, February 1.

Mr Mcgee also targeted Australian diggers, writing that he “laughs every time an Australian soldier gets killed”.

The 38-year-old has admitted to having an addiction to social media.

he extreme heat the west has been experiencing of late may soon be a thing of the past with the announcement of an Urban Living Lab, to be built at the Sydney Science Park in Luddenham.

The first of its kind in Australia, the Urban Living Lab will provide an onsite testing ground for innovators to create and test their inventions in the future Sydney Science Park’s unique urban environment.

Being located in such an urban area opens up great opportunities for scientists to develop and test initiatives to combat issues in such areas, like hot weather.

The $5 billion Celestino project will be a fully integrated community that will create more than 12,000 knowledge-based jobs, cater to over 10,000 students and be home to over 10,000 residents.

It will include 3,400 homes, 340,000 square metres of commercial floor space, 100,000 square metres of education floorspace, and 30,000 square metres of town centre, as well as 50 hectares of parks and recreation areas.

Jeremy Spinak from Celestino said the team are building a ‘science city’.

“In a few months time you’re going to

see this area, this paddock, transform into the largest science park in Australia,” he said at the launch of the project last week.

“Australia is a very urban environment and with that we have many urban challenges to face – the lab is about solving these challenges.

“We’re going out to innovators around Australia and asking for ideas where we will then choose projects and bring those innovators here to the park.

“They’ll work in the first building, due to be completed in 2018, and once they’re ready to go, they will test their products in the urban living environment that we are creating here at the park.

“That’s what makes this so unique; we hope we can get these products rolled out and commercialised for the rest of Australia and the world to use.”

Acting Director of CSIRO’s Land and Water Division, Paul Bertsch, said it’s the first operational CSIRO Urban Living Lab. “On completion, not only will we have the largest research development park in Australia and the largest innovation hub, but it will be the most dynamic,” he said.

“The Urban Living Lab is going to provide opportunities for collaborations that are unprecedented in government research, sector research and community research.”

Troy Dodds Bernardi is a rat – no doubt about it A little over six months ago Cory Bernardi was elected to the Senate as a member of the Liberal Party.

It’s fair to say that many of those who voted for him did so because of the party he represented, not the man himself.

Therefore it is nothing short of disgraceful and disloyal of Mr Bernardi to jump ship from the Liberals this week to start his own political party.

Mr Bernardi should resign.

If he no longer believes he can represent the party that he was part of when elected, then he shouldn’t be in Parliament — it’s that simple.

Mr Bernardi’s website is branded with the words “common sense”.

Well, it’s simply common sense that if you’re walking away from the party that endorsed and supported you, and got you elected, you should walk away from Parliament altogether and fight for re-election on your own platform.

Turnbull is finished When the Prime Minister is sitting down for a prime time interview with Laurie Oakes on ‘60 Minutes’ less than a year after an election, you know there’s trouble in the camp.

Mr Turnbull has been on a charm offensive this past week – appearing not only with Oakes, but on Ben Fordham’s 2GB program, with John Laws on 2SM, ABC’s ‘7.30’ and a number of others.

You could be forgiven for thinking we are in an election campaign.

The Prime Minister is in a desperate attempt to turn around his popularity, which appears to be waning by the day.

But I argue that Mr Turnbull is already

finished. It’s only a matter of when, not if, he is forced to resign or will be turfed out by worried Liberal MPs. Mr Turnbull was never going to turn around public opinion after he stabbed Tony Abbott in the back and stole the leadership in 2015.

It was an act from which he was destined never to recover, just like Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd before him.

Now he simply awaits his fate. The man who partly blamed negative polls on his decision to move on Tony Abbott is now himself the victim of such polls.

And recovery seems very unlikely.

Foxtel scrambling for survival Those who live streamed Foxtel’s coverage of the Anthony Mundine v Danny Green fight on Facebook last weekend need to be dealt with via the full force of the law.

Foxtel has every right to protect its product, and the many thousands of people who paid $60 to see the fight.

However, the pay television provider’s feverish attempts to shut down the stream and hold users to account is just more evidence that it is struggling to survive and could disappear from the Australian media landscape within a decade.

Without live sport, Foxtel would be dead and buried.

Apart from a few notable exceptions, Foxtel remains primarily the home of a TV era we thought we’d left behind – when Benson and Stabler were still partners, when Dick Van Dyke was a doctor who always stumbled upon bizarre murder scenes and when ‘The Simpsons’ was still funny.

And while I love classic TV shows and movies as much as anyone, the arrival of Netflix, Stan and other streaming providers will eventually see Foxtel lose relevance.

Optus’ successful attempt to steal the Premier League rights is proof that Foxtel does not have a monopoly on live sport bidding when it comes to pay television.

If another provider was to steal the NRL or the A-League, Foxtel would almost be killed off overnight.

Premier visits Penrith Last Friday I had the opportunity to meet briefly with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, along with about 20 other business people from the local area.

There is very little doubt that Ms Berejiklian is a very good operator, and she certainly won over the room.

Her test now is to keep the conversation flowing over the next two years – there will be plenty of issues to wade through once the honeymoon period is over.

Suggestions made by Cr Crameri include either a ranger patrolling the streets – leaving notes on cars that park too close to the bend – or installing ‘no

parking’ signs on some streets to improve safety and available space.

“I believe planners of estates need to also look at what they’re designing in terms of practicality. Streets are too narrow and there’s not enough parking associated with homes,” Cr Crameri said.

“These small blocks and small roads cause many problems down the line.”

“Planners should be looking at what they’re creating, there’s not enough room to move,” the Independent Councillor said at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on Monday night.

Cr Crameri said the streets are too narrow and there’s not enough parking associated with homes in the estates.

“The whole thing revolves around subdivisions, making the streets narrower, with house blocks getting smaller and it’s causing a bigger problem than you think,” Cr Crameri told the Weekender.

“It goes as far as looking at getting smaller garbage trucks so they can fit in the streets.”

Cr Crameri has asked for Council’s traffic committee to look into the issue and come to a conclusion on the best course of action to take.

“People are filling up their garage with items that need to be stored or with boats or trailers which leaves them to park their cars on the road,” Cr Crameri said.

ladys Berejiklian has made her first visit to Penrith since becoming NSW Premier.

The Liberal leader met with a select group of local business people at a specially arranged meeting at the Coffee Club in Penrith last Friday.

The former Transport Minister and Treasurer joked that it took her as long as two weeks to make her first visit to Penrith in the top job.

She told the gathered crowd – which included Penrith Panthers boss Phil Gould, Men of League Penrith President Alex McKenzie, Western Sydney Business Centre CEO John Todd, Citizen of the Year Ross Hutchison, local real estate leader Darren Latty and Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce President Gina Field, among around 20 others – that she would make regular visits to Penrith during her tenure as Premier.

She also heaped praise on Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, saying that he had one of the biggest jobs in Cabinet now that he has taken on the Ministries of Western Sydney and WestConnex.

She said that Mr Ayres would continue to be her voice in the region, and encouraged businesses to engage with him to discuss any issues they may have that

Teen hit by car at Colyton: Police urge more vigilance on our roads

Sex crime breakthrough: Man charged with historic offences EMILY NEWTON

51-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple sexual assault matters involving minors which occurred between 1987 and 1998 in the Penrith region.

The incredible breakthrough in the cold cases reached a dramatic conclusion at about 8am on Tuesday, when Penrith detectives with assistance from Mudgee Police attended an address at Lions Drive, Mudgee.

They arrested the man and he was taken to Mudgee Police Station where he was charged with 19 historical aggravated sexual assault matters.

“It was alleged those offences were committed on five separate victims,” a Police spokesperson said.

“This is a result of extensive investigation involving multiple victims from the Penrith region.”

13-year-old girl was hit by a car in Colyton last week, prompting a reminder from police to take extra care on the road.

At 2.45pm last Thursday, the student got off a bus that was stopped outside Colyton High School on Carpenter Road.

The girl walked behind the bus to cross the street where she was struck by a vehicle travelling at a low speed.

She was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital with non life-threatening injuries and continues to recover.

“When in a school zone you need to make decisions for yourself but also for children that are around,” Senior Constable Page said.

“School zones are there for a reason, you need to travel under the speed limit, but you also need to be alert and prepare for the unexpected around children.”

Chief Inspector Tracy Stone, from Penrith Local Area Command, said it’s a timely reminder to be careful around school zones.

Officers from Penrith Local Area Command commenced an investigation, taking further statements from three men, who were also allegedly sexually assaulted during the same time period, when they were children.

The accused man, who lived in Penrith at the time of the offences, was refused bail and appeared in court on Tuesday.

“It is alleged the male would collect children on his pushbike and take them to an isolated area in Penrith where they were then indecently assaulted,” the spokesperson said.

It is believed further offences may have been committed in the Penrith area, as well as the Mudgee area, where the man has resided for an extended period of time.

Investigations into the incidents are continuing, and police are appealing for any further victims to come forward.

“I’d like to ask for a report to work out a system of alternating the venue for future Australia Day events,” Cr Price said.

“It would be great to hold it for one year in St Clair or St Marys and then have it in Penrith on the other year.

“I believe it did happen in the past and I figure it would be good to share it around the LGA.”

The objective of the Planning Proposal is to improve the recreation and community facilities available to Erskine Park residents by enabling the sale of those sites which may no longer be required to meet community need and reinvesting all the proceeds back into Erskine Park. To achieve this, the Planning Proposal seeks to: s Change the zoning of the sites from ‘RE1 Public Recreation’ to ‘R2 Low Density Residential’ (the same zoning as other residential land in Erskine Park), to permit their development for those uses permitted in that zone. s Reclassify the land from ‘Community’ to ‘Operational’, in order to permit it to be sold, if Council chooses to do so. s Establish a minimum lot size of 550sqm for each of the seven sites – the same minimum lot size standards which applies to other residential lots in Erskine Park. s Apply height controls of 8.5m to the seven sites – the same height control as applies to other residential land in Erskine Park. s Reinvest all money raised from the sale of any of the affected land into improved recreation and community facilities within Erskine Park (such as the recently upgraded Phoenix Park).

Where was Australian flag?

Questions are being asked as to why the Australian flag wasn’t added to Penrith Council’s advertisements for their Australia Day event this year.

On Monday night, Cr Bernard Bratusa asked for a briefing back from Council that clarifies who was responsible for the decision to leave the Australian flag off the advertisements distributed by Council for the Jamison Park spectacular.

“We stand here proudly each meeting singing the national anthem, the Australian flag was on children’s faces at the event, and displayed proudly throughout the event on January 26,” Cr Bratusa said.

“I’m disappointed that material distributed by Council didn’t have the flag on it and I’d like to know who was responsible for that decision.”

The Weekender can reveal that the flag actually hasn’t appeared on Council’s Australia Day advertising for some years.

Woman ordered off the road after defying court orders

A senior citizen who openly defied court orders by driving while disqualified three times in as many weeks has narrowly avoided an eight-year ban.

Paula Gallagher faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with three counts of driving while suspended and one count of driving an unregistered car.

The court heard the self-funded retiree was stopped by police at North St Marys on December 28 after she was detected driving an unregistered car.

When questioned by police, the accused disclosed she was subject to a threemonth demerit point suspension and assured police she wouldn’t do it again.

She also explained her purpose for driving, telling officers “no one was home and it’s too hot to walk to the shops”.

“I’m suspended, I am just going down to the shops to get some things, I won’t do it again I promise, honey,” she said, according to agreed facts.

However her vow was short lived, with St Marys police busting the 65-year-old in the driver’s seat again on her way to have coffee with a friend on January 18, after recognising her as she drove past.

After being spoken to a second time and declining a lift by police to the train station, she was swooped on again some 15 minutes later as she drove along Brisbane Street.

“I’m an idiot, aren’t I?” she remarked.

Ms Gallagher was then transported to St Marys train station to prevent any further occurrences.

When she faced court for sentence last week, Magistrate Roger Clisdell was suitably unimpressed. “‘I won’t do it again, I promise’ and then you do it twice in one day, within half-anhour,” he said.

Magistrate Clisdell said because they were all first offences he would not accumulate the 12-month disqualifications, before also quashing the habitual offender declaration that would have

extended her ban for a further five years.

But he said she would have to pay for her total disregard.

“You should have kept your first promise,” he said.

“I can’t let you off.”

She was convicted, fined $1,100 and barred from driving for 12 months.

Man banned from driving for 12 months after street race

A man who drove dangerously while conveying his pregnant sister-in-law to hospital to give birth has been slapped with a hefty fine.

Faizan Mehmood, 28, appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday after he was clocked doing more than 30km/h over the speed limit.

The court heard things went pearshaped when a Toyota Kluger allegedly tried to block the accused’s path, resulting in a high-speed street race.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell accepted his explanation but said “nevertheless, when you drive like that you are going to lose your licence”.

“Don’t ever drive like that again,” he added sternly.

He was convicted, fined $750 and disqualified for 12 months.

Man promises he’s “off the drugs” after $300 fine

Matthew Eric McNeilly has been hit with a fine after being busted with illicit drugs.

Mr McNeilly appeared before Penrith Local Court last Friday and pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and methamphetamine.

The accused told the court he was now “off the drugs” and looking for work.

He was convicted and fined $300.

Woman busted drink driving for second time

Natasha Fiona Kathleen Anderson will be assessed on her eligibility to undertake community service work after plead-

ing guilty to drink driving. Ms Anderson faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving, her second offence of that kind.

The matter was adjourned in order for her to undertake a traffic offender program and to see if she was suitable to complete a community service order.

She is due back in court on March 23.

Good behaviour bond for man who took drugs as payment

Wayne Wilson has been conditionally discharged after pleading guilty to possessing synthetic cannabis.

Mr Wilson fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday and told the court he “was silly” and had learnt his lesson.

The court heard the accused had taken the drugs as payment for a job.

He was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond.

$500 fine and driving ban for disqualified driver

Luke Wright has been stripped of his licence for two years after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified.

“There’s not much I can do for you, Mr Wright,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said when the accused faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

“That’s what I get,” a resigned Mr Wright said.

He was convicted and fined $500.

Sleeping man fails to appear in court on drugs charge

Blake Hansen has been slugged a $300 fine for possessing drugs.

Mr Hansen was due to appear before Penrith Local Court last Thursday but “slept in” and entered a written plea of guilty instead.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell noted it was his first drug offence before handing down the penalty.

P-plater didn’t read driving suspension letter

Kelly Ann Gilligan has been given the chance to keep her licence after pleading guilty to driving while suspended.

The P-plater fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday and said she wasn’t aware of her suspension.

“Did you read the letter?” Magistrate Roger Clisdell questioned.

“No,” she said.

“What did you do with it? Threw it in the bin?” Magistrate Clisdell said.

“I can’t remember,” the accused said.

The matter was adjourned to August 10 to see if she can abstain from accruing any more traffic offences.

Heavy fine and driving ban after string of charges

Deng Michael Maout has taken a whack to his hip pocket after pleading guilty to a string of offences.

Mr Maout fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with two counts of driving while disqualified, one count of using a false licence and one count of disobeying a stop sign.

He was convicted, fined $1,500 and stripped of his licence for two years.

Woman to seek legal advice

Melissa Gardener has had her matter adjourned in order to seek legal advice.

Ms Gardner faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with two counts of shoplifting.

Her matter was re-listed to February 23.

She is yet to enter a plea.

Man facing multiple charges to front court again this month

Aaron John Horsley has had his matter adjourned in order to get legal advice.

Mr Horsley faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with a range of offences, including unlicenced driving, speeding, unsecured load, display unauthorised number plates and possess explosives.

He is due to face court again on February 23.

Penrith: Man fights off masked robbers inside his home

A 57-year-old Penrith man has escaped with some bruising and minor lacerations after a home invasion on Tuesday morning.

At about 1.45am on February 7, the man was sleeping at his residence on Rawson Avenue when two males entered the residence.

It is alleged they demanded money and attempted to tie the resident up with rope, but he was able to fight them off with a small struggle.

The two men, who were described as wearing balaclavas, then left with a small amount of property.

Penrith police and detectives attended the residence and a crime scene was established where a number of items were seized for forensic analysis.

Cranebrook: Police act quickly to free trapped puppies

Police have attended a home in Cranebrook where seven husky puppies were rescued after getting stuck between two fences.

On Sunday, February 5 at about 7.30pm, police attended Koala Glen following a request for assistance from the RSPCA. When police arrived, they identified a number of puppies in distress having escaped from an enclosure and getting themselves stuck.

At the time, the temperature was high, reaching about 40 degrees and police acted quickly to free them.

Police cut the chain link fence to free them, and they were then taken to a vet for treatment.

All suffered heat exhaustion, but were otherwise in good health.

The owner of the property was not home at the time, but was contacted shortly afterwards.

It was clear that neglect was not an issue and the puppies had simply escaped their enclosure and gotten stuck in the process.

St Marys: Police investigating multiple servo robberies

Another two robberies have occurred at service stations in St Marys this week under similar circumstances to incidents last week.

The first occurred at 3.15am on Sunday, February 5 on Mamre Road when a male person has run through the open doors and into the store.

It is alleged he was armed with a hockey stick and pushed the service attendant demanding money and cigarettes.

The offender is described as about 183cm tall, wearing a black jumper with white shirt underneath, black pants and running shoes, with a black cap on, and he was of athletic build.

A second incident occurred at 1.40am on Monday, February 6 when a man entered a service station on the Great Western Highway, near the Neale Street intersection.

The man threatened the service attendant with a knife before stealing the whole cash register and running away.

He is described as wearing a black face mask, black cap with white lines on it, a black hooded jumper, black long pants, white shoes and was in possession of a blue cooler bag.

Kingswood: Man left pub, but returned to cause damage

A 41-year-old Kingswood man has been charged with ‘Destroy or damage property’ and ‘Affray’ after smashing the entrance doors to a licensed premises on the Great Western Highway, Kingswood.

At about 7.00pm on Tuesday, January 31 the man was asked by the manager to leave the licensed premises.

It is alleged the man has refused and started to argue with the manager when security have stepped in and convinced the man that he was to leave the location.

Eventually the man left, but it is alleged he returned a short time later and kicked and punched the main entrance doors, smashing them.

Senator’s defection Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has resigned from the Australian Liberal Party this week to start his own political party aimed at championing what he calls “conservative” values.

You might have heard of Cory Bernardi before. Senator Bernardi resigned as Tony Abbott’s Parliamentary Secretary in 2012 under a wave of outrage about comments he made suggesting a link between same sex marriage and bestiality.

Senator Bernardi inferred that legalising marriage equality may lead to polygamous marriages and “consensual sexual relations between humans and animals”, a disgusting inference in the writer’s view, and at a hazardous guess, the view of most ordinary Australians.

That said, what does Bernardi’s defection mean for the government’s ability to make new laws?

In a nutshell, the role of the Senate and its Senators is to act as a system of checks and balances to make sure the government is not abusing its power.

One of the main functions of the Senate is to review legislation proposed and passed by the House of Representatives, usually the house in which a sitting government holds a majority, and decide whether the legislation should be passed into law.

This means that when a sitting government wishes to propose a law (for

example the recently failed bid to enact a plebiscite on the issue of marriage equality), a majority of the members of the House of Representatives must first vote for it to proceed to the Senate for a final stamp of approval. Once in the Senate, a majority of Senators must then vote for the law to pass and become a law.

While some might argue that Senator Bernardi’s defection is a positive because his extreme views are not representative of the average Australian, it means that the Liberal Party now have one less vote in the Senate they could have otherwise relied on to pass laws and push their political agenda.

Senator Bernardi will still hold a vote, however instead of voting with the Liberal Party by default as has typically been his modus operandi, the Government will now have to woo him to get his vote to assist them to pass legislation in an already contentious and unpredictable Senate.

Ultimately, his defection makes it harder for a government who is already battling against the slimmest of majorities in the House of Representatives to pass law and govern effectively.

The natural result of this is potentially less law reform and an arguably hamstrung government that can’t govern on its own terms.

That can’t be a good thing.

Colyton man has been remanded behind bars after making terrorist threats online.

Ciaron Patrick Mcgee, 38, faced Penrith Local Court last week after failing to comply with his bail conditions.

Mr Mcgee was arrested and granted police bail on December 3 after allegedly using Twitter to threaten to kill and menace high profile people, including politicians.

Despite being ordered not to use any communication device, the National Security Hotline was alerted to fresh activity on Mr Mcgee’s Facebook page after concerned social media users raised the alarm.

He was subsequently arrested by the Joint Counter Terrorism Team at his Desborough Road home about 1.20pm on Wednesday, February 1.

In just some of the disturbing posts dated January 29, Mr Mcgee allegedly threatens to “slit” Pauline Hanson’s throat on national television, while in another he pledges his allegiance to ISIS and writes every single victim they have killed “deserved to die”. Another entry simply reads: “I am a terrorist”.

Australian diggers were also targeted, with Mr Mcgee writing that he “laughs

every time an Australian soldier gets killed”.

It comes after the accused allegedly contacted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Twitter asking to be deported to Syria so he could join ISIS. The prosecution opposed bail, saying Mr Mcgee posed a serious threat to community safety.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said what started out as a “vulgar” political protest against the government’s treatment of asylum seekers was now turning into something more “sinister”.

He said although the accused told police he had no intention of carrying out any of the actions he described, he was unwilling to play Russian roulette.

“In my view it is escalating and something is building,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

“I may be wrong in that regard but I am not prepared to take that risk.”

The court heard Mr Mcgee, a pensioner who cares for his disabled mother, has a serious drug addiction and admitted to police he was addicted to Twitter and Facebook, telling them he “can’t stop”.

He has pleaded not guilty to ‘using a carriage service to threaten to kill’ but guilty to ‘using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend’.

Mr Mcgee rolled his eyes when the decision to refuse bail was handed down.

pending on mental health services in Australia has reached its highest level ever, according to a new Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report released last week.

It revealed that $8.5 billion was spent on mental health services in 2014-15, up just under a billion dollars from 2010-11.

Acting Manager of Headspace Services in Penrith, Deborah Shand, said this reflects the need to invest in mental health strategies, particularly for young people.

“There’s a real understanding now that early intervention leads to better outcomes for individuals and the rest of the economy,” she said.

“The earlier we are able to intervene, the less of an impact it has on an individual in terms of the severity of the mental illness.”

The report shows that 59.6 per cent of funding was provided by state and territory governments, increasing by 3.6 per cent from the Australian Government and two per cent from state and territory governments.

“More funding means we are able to provide more early intervention rather than just waiting until people are at a point where they need some sort of crisis intervention, like hospital,” Ms Shand said.

Ms Shand said the rapid infrastructure and housing expansion in Penrith has created an increased need for services.

“The majority of referrals that we get at Headspace Penrith is from young people walking in themselves,” she said.

“People are more comfortable talking about mental health issues, which means people are more likely to go to a mental health provider and we need services available to help look after them.”

Ms Shand believes there can never be enough funding in mental health services.

t’s a love story built on calling Penrith home, and Russell and Alison Johnson are celebrating almost 65 years of marriage this Valentine’s Day. The heart of the community runs through their family, with relatives who once owned the Red Cow Hotel and Thornton Hall when they were young.

“We courted for five years and then we married in 1952,” Mrs Johnson said.

“The years have gone by so quickly, it’s hard to think they add up to 64.

“We’ve had a fun life. Russell is the type of person that every morning I wake up and before I get out of bed, he has me having a giggle about something.”

board home for 63 years, and have never felt the desire to leave the area where they fell in love.

Mr Johnson cheekily remembers first meeting his wife catching the train one morning before they commuted to work.

“I saw her in a short skirt, and thought ‘oh, she’s got a nice pair of legs’,” Mr Johnson laughed.

He fondly recalls taking Alison to dances where they had some of the best days of their lives.

“When you get married, you always want to ask questions. The minister or priest says ‘for better or for worse...’ you forget about the worst parts,” he joked.

Mrs Johnson was quick to quip back, reminding him he hasn’t had many of the worst parts in their marriage.

She believes the success of their long

and happy marriage is honest communication.

“If you have a difference of opinion, talk it out before it gets too far. Never go to bed on an argument,” Mrs Johnson said.

Her husband agrees, saying that you have to “live life to the fullest”.

“Nothing is ever as bad as what it feels.

There is always something coming up on the bright side somewhere along the line. You’ve just got to ride the bad out,” he said.

With four children, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren with another on the way, the pair are delighted to have two family weddings coming up.

The happy couple are looking forward to dancing together again like old times.

When doors open, 22-year-old James Zarb will be slinging drinks behind the bar at The Bavarian as one of 32 new recruits joining the company. Mr Zarb first developed an interest in restaurants when he took a job as a barista after high school.

“I love networking with people, listening to their stories and trying to brighten their day,” he said.

For the first 500 customers, 500 buildyour-own pizzas will be given away at Fratelli Famous as well as 500 hotdogs at The Bavarian on Monday.

Rates on hold The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) failed to deliver any surprises on Tuesday when it held interest rates at the historic low of 1.5 per cent.

Very few experts predicted any rate movement from the RBA following its monthly Board meeting.

Mortgage Choice Chief Executive Officer John Flavell said it was “safe and unsurprising”.

“Amidst a lot of domestic and global uncertainty, it wasn’t surprising to see the Reserve Bank of Australia take the safe option and leave the official cash rate on hold,” he said.

“Nobody knows what the future will bring. Depending on what happens both here and abroad, the Reserve Bank could really decide to do anything with the cash rate.”

Council’s tribute Councillor Mark Davies has asked that Penrith Council write to Queen Elizabeth II to mark her serving 65 years as the longest-reigning living monarch.

“I think it’s appropriate on behalf of this Council that we write to the Queen to congratulate her on making it to 65 years, the longest reign in the history of the monarch,” he said at Monday night’s Ordinary Meeting.

“It would be great to mark her dedication and service.”

Elizabeth became Queen at age 25 on February 6, 1952.

She passed through Penrith during her trip to Australia in 1954.

Woman’s lucky escape from car fire “There was heaps of smoke, it was really scary”: Driver’s frightening ordeal EMILY NEWTON

t took just three minutes for a car to be completely destroyed by fire last Friday morning on Tukara Road, South Penrith.

Shiou-An Zou was driving along The Northern Road when she saw smoke from her engine coming into the car at her glove box and outside through the windshield washing jet.

“I noticed it began to smoke from the air conditioning unit... so I pulled over on Tukara Road only a minute later,” she said.

“There was heaps of smoke, it was really scary.”

She ran out of the car and called emergency services who arrived on the scene shortly after, but within two minutes, the engine of the car had been completely engulfed by flames.

“It burst into flames and I was just like, ‘oh my God’,” Ms Zou said.

Her 10-month-old daughter and fouryear-old son, whose birthday was on the same day as the incident, were luckily not in the car at the time.

“I think if my kids were in the car, I would have gone into a panic,” Ms Zou said.

“There was a guy who saw the car was smoking and he pulled over and helped me,” she said.

“When I saw the car was starting to smoke, I was already starting to panic.”

Currently recovering from a severe headache from smoke inhalation, Ms Zou was lucky to escape otherwise unhurt.

Every year her car is fully serviced, and whenever there is anything that seems wrong, she takes it to get checked out.

Ms Zou said she recently noticed the car felt “heavy” with some added difficulty turning the wheel and while accelerating, but nothing to indicate something was seriously wrong with the car.

“I had it serviced only two months ago, and it was all good,” she said.

Truck could reach speeds of up to 159km/h, inspection finds

truck driver has been fined after his vehicle was found to be defective following a routine heavy vehicle inspection in St Marys last Friday.

Shortly after 12pm on February 3, officers attached to the Joint Traffic Task Force were conducting heavy vehicle inspections when they stopped a Tipper and Dog on Forrester Road.

It was identified that the vehicle could travel a top speed of 159km/h, well in excess of legal requirements, following an engine control module download.

Superintendent Stuart Smith of the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said police will continue to focus on vehicle compliance checks.

“Heavy vehicle compliance and safety is just one element in a broad range of road safety initiatives police are focusing on,” Superintendent Smith said.

“Any vehicle, particularly those of a significant weight such as truck and dog trailer combinations, that are noncompliant put other road users at serious risk when they are at high speeds or stop suddenly in traffic. We make no excuses for stopping these drivers and if necessary can ensure they are taken off the road for a period of time.”

Fowler pushes for new airport to be named after aviation pioneer JADE ALIPRANDI

estern Sydney Airport, to be built at Badgerys Creek, has been given the green light, but a name for the new facility remains up in the air.

Penrith Councillor Ross Fowler has requested a report back to Penrith Council endorsing their support in naming western Sydney’s newest airport in honour of Australia’s first aviator, William Hart.

On November 18, 1911 Mr Hart flew 76km from Penrith, via St Marys, to Sydney, completing the first cross-country flight in the state in 55 minutes.

Awarded Australian aviator’s licence No. 1 on December 5, 1911, according to historical records, Mr Hart opened an Aviation School in Penrith, taking on student aviators in 1912.

“There’s no doubt that Badgerys Creek or Western Sydney Airport is going to be constructed in the near future,” Cr Fowler said.

“I think it would be great if it was named after the first Australian aviator William Hart – it’s what I would like given his connection with Penrith.”

Cr Fowler said Council should take delight in proposing a name for the future airport, given the impacts the airport will have on the region.

New homeowners face nervous wait on future of interest rates

ew data has revealed that as many as one in five homeowners would struggle to make their repayments if interest rates rose by as little as 0.5 per cent. And the research, conducted by Digital Finance Analytics (DFA), revealed that just 35 per cent of homeowners could cope with a rise to seven per cent in interest rates.

Claremont Meadows residents Jess Miller and Jamie Smith have recently bought an apartment in Thornton and say they are concerned about rate increases.

“I hadn’t really thought about it much before but it is a concern of ours,” Ms Miller said.

“Before we bought the apartment, we crunched the numbers and looked at the interest rate calculator – we would just be scraping through on two salaries if the rates rose to seven per cent.”

As teachers without permanent positions, the couple are also concerned about what would happen if they were without work for an extended period.

“We could lose our jobs at any point potentially and if we did and interest rates rose to even 5.5 per cent, I think we would definitely struggle,” Ms Miller said.

Dr Goodwin added that worrying about their child being online is a little outdated.

“There are ways around having your child sitting their consuming technology mindlessly to having them use it for educational purposes,” she said.

“Parents should look at what the child is doing online and consider when they are using it.”

Dr Goodwin suggests looking at podcasts, creating multimedia products, and for the child to learn about coding.

I attended one of Penrith’s new burger restaurants last week and while I was impressed, I felt like I needed an ambulance on stand-by given the size of the thing. While I appreciate it’s great to have so many great new restaurants in the Penrith area (there seems to be a plethora of them at the moment), all of them generally sell high fat foods. From chicken and chips to burgers, Penrith is potentially setting itself up to become supersized – and not just when it comes to houses and units! Is it because we all just crave fatty food out here, or are people taking advantage of us? Eating out and being healthy is very difficult in Penrith.

enrith parents are being urged not to let their children fall into the ‘digital zombie’ effect when it comes to the amount of screen time they have.

Released at the start of every school year, NBN’s Digital Parenting Report reveals key trends on how Aussie children use the Internet for learning as well as insights into how parents feel about it.

This year, the report found the majority of parents at 74 per cent agree that digital skills and access to fast broadband are key in order to best prepare their children for the future workforce, while half at 50 per cent worry their children are spending too much time online.

Children’s Technology and Learning Expert, Dr Kristy Goodwin, said it’s important to ensure your child is actively engaging with the technology.

“It’s important for parents to encourage their kids to be actively involved rather than just consuming what they’re looking at, they should be creating content or uploading videos,” she said.

“Instead of allowing them to passively consume what they’re looking at, look for educational content like videos and podcasts – parents don’t need to fret that being online is necessarily bad.”

Thanks to hospital I would just like to give a very big thank you to all the staff at Nepean Hospital.

From the ambulance to ED team to the Cath Lab and Cardiac Ward and the Neurological team. My husband who is 44-years-old suffered a massive heart attack on Monday, January 30. He is very lucky to be here. We then had to come back in again due to pains in the arm. He was later released after a few days, but then got rushed back in with a suspected mild stroke. We could not fault the whole hospital and we are very glad we live close by so from all the Timmins family thank you for looking after us.

Wearing the wrong bra can cause serious health issues, experts say

t’s a figure that has been floating around for over a decade, but the Breast Health Foundation reports that 80 per cent of women are still wearing the wrong bra size.

With 17 years of bra fitting experience and a vast product knowledge, owner of DeBra’s Penrith, Debra Kinney, said the biggest problem is women simply don’t know what to do.

“A lot of people still don’t acknowledge that they need a professional fitting,”she said.

“They think the bra is fitting them properly. I think that 99 per cent of women hate bra shopping, it’s all too hard.”

Wearing the wrong bra can have repercussions for your health including neck, shoulder and back pain and, in some cases, breathing problems.

Ms Kinney’s biggest concern is when women find one bra that fits well then stay with that size regardless of different brands or changes in their own body.

“No one stays a 12C for 20 years. Our bodies change, we go through adolescence, pregnancy, menopause,” she said.

“The right bra can help the confidence of a woman.”

As a Mayor in western Sydney, hearing the new Premier list housing affordability and local infrastructure investment as priorities was music to my ears.

Politicians, industry groups and developers debate the merits of reduced taxation, new incentives and increased supply as the panacea for housing affordability. Meanwhile those of us who live in the “more affordable areas” on the outskirts of metropolitan Sydney are already paying a heavy price – at the petrol pump and through tolls, and the health, social and lifestyle costs through some of the longest commutes in Australia.

By 2036, two out of every three new Sydneysiders will make their home in western Sydney – that’s three million people living west of Parramatta.

Penrith has experienced the effect of significant population growth. Since 1971 our population has grown from 58,000 to 205,000 people. Meanwhile, investment in infrastructure, particularly public transport, has not kept up.

Our City still relies on one railway line running East-West to Sydney’s CBD. Penrith sits on one of Australia’s most

significant future north/south economic corridors and crosses the east-west connection, meaning our community travels in many different directions, across the region to get to work.

This is not a luxury of choice; 88 per cent of people rely on private motor vehicles to get to work. The increasing congestion and time spent getting across the region is an enormous burden.

But the City Deal concept offers us a great opportunity because it breaks from the past approach of disjointed planning by three levels of government and gives us the chance to move beyond short political cycles, old eastwest thinking and local parochialism on priorities. It offers the potential to boost the productivity and prosperity of Sydney, and all of its residents.

The high growth areas of outer western Sydney make up an area larger than greater London – most of which is still green fields. But with proper planning, we have the potential to create a 21st century city, which stands alongside Sydney and Parramatta.

enrith Christian School has opened its classrooms to its newest Guide Dogs NSW/ACT puppy, Rosie.

Working through the guide dog training program, Puppy Pals, the school is excited to be helping Rosie in her journey to become a seeing eye dog.

Chief Puppy Pal and Deputy Head of Middle School, Bob Pickworth, said the program is a great long term commitment for the students.

“We want to do something for the community that’s not tokenistic,” Mr Pickworth said.

“It allows the students to be anchored with their environment.”

Rosie is the fourth puppy the school has had the pleasure of helping raise over the past six years.

Mr Pickworth said the program challenges students and reinforces some of the school’s core values of reliability, responsibility and integrity.

“They have to learn it’s not always fun, the dog poos, the dog bites, the dog jumps,” he said.

“They have to commit to the hard work and they learn that it’s not always fun.”

Every day 28 Australians are diagnosed with uncorrectable vision loss, including nine who will become blind.

fter his father passed away last year, 29-year-old Aaron DuBois thought it was time to re-evaluate his life, refusing to let his disability define him.

Diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, Mr DuBois has found meaningful employment with the help of Ability Links at Penrith’s Outback Steakhouse.

“I wanted to be a chef when I was a kid, so I thought I would try to get into something like that for my first step into normal employment,” he said.

“Instead of being at home all the time, which I was doing, I wanted to get out into the community.”

Mr DuBois met Paul Steward from Ability Links in November last year, and did not expect to be beginning his dream career so soon.

A day volunteering at Outback Steakhouse soon turned into employment as proprietor Mike Hicks was impressed with his great attitude.

Mr Hicks said that he is excited for Mr DuBois, who had his first shift this week.

“We employ and work in our community every day, and it’s very important for my store to reflect this,” Mr Hicks said.

Rosie is the newest dog to take part in the Puppy Pals program By working with the Puppy Pal program, the school is able to help more people who are blind or vision impaired lead a life of independence.

Penrith business has gone above and beyond by donating over $25,000 worth of stock to DARE (Domestic Abuse Recovery and Education), to raise awareness of domestic violence (DV).

Owner of Penrith Bridal Centre, Melinda Witten, said she wanted to ensure her formal gowns would go somewhere that would make a difference.

Founder of DARE Formal Wear, Karen Johns, said the sale of every gown raises funds to help with the ongoing needs of families, women and children in crisis.

“If we can teach these kids about DV, the cycle of DV and where to get help, that’s the key,” she said.

Ms Witten said the work of Ms Johns and DARE is vital to support families caught in the domestic violence cycle, and should be available nationwide.

“There is nothing like that in Sydney let alone NSW,” she said.

Putting students in the driver’s seat Penrith Christian School aims to take kids out of the classroom and give them real life experience EMILY NEWTON

he next Henry Ford or Edward Holden could come from Penrith Christian School as students begin a six month program where they will design and build their own model solar car.

Last Thursday saw the launch of the school’s newest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program where Year 8 students engage in STEM subjects in an innovative and enriching manner.

STEM Project Manager, Corrine Robinson, said the day is an attempt to overcome a nationwide challenge to motivate young people to choose science and mathematics subjects at school.

“As a mathematician, I’m keen for the kids to be a part of the project and see the use of math beyond paper,” Ms Robinson said.

“The project is about engaging students in STEM subjects and starting some enthusiasm for STEM and get students thinking about enrolling in STEM subjects in senior school.

“We especially want to help increase the number of girls in STEM-based careers.”

University and launched with a range of cars, including hybrids, sports, antiques and hot rods on display at the school.

The excitement seems to be already producing results with student Paige Foley thinking about how this experience will help her in the future.

“It’s been really fun, I think it’s cool that we’re not just stuck in the classroom to do work and we can go outside and explore,” she said.

Paige said she plans on using the project to help her future career path.

“I’m really excited, I want to do advertising when I get older, and I really get to practice that and put it into a real life perspective here,” she said.

Classmate Brock Stinson is already planning the perfect car.

“I’m a big car person, so I’ve been really excited about this for a while,” he said.

“When they said you have to come up with a design, I had about 50 images flash through my head.”

The project takes kids out of the classroom and offers a unique challenge.

“It’s really different to what we’re used to, I think it’s a very valuable experience.

It’s definitely something that a lot of other schools wouldn’t get to experience,” Brock said.

grew up in a small beach suburb of Wollongong called Towradgi where, as children, we would ride in the back seat of the car without seat belts, when milk came in glass bottles and we listened to songs such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘My Sharona’.

It was the 70s and a few houses down from where we lived was a corner shop a kid could only dream about. My best memories involved the lollies.

Walking through the bi-fold front door, down at a child’s-eye level, was the glass counter cabinet stocked with the largest assortment of loose lollies imaginable.

I remember getting off the bus after school and piling in with other kids crowding over the cabinet full of lolly classics such as Jersey Caramels, Chocolate Buddies, Cobbers, Fruit Cocktails, Sherbets, Redskins, Spearmint Leaves, Teeth, Chewy Milko Sticks, Milk Bottles, Bananas, Black Cats, Honey Bears, Witchettie Grubs, Fags, Violet Crumbles and Strawberries & Creams.

Most are still around today in packets but I reckon some of the recipes have definitely been altered and so have their sizes.

My big favourite was the Cobber, I would suck the chocolate off first then chew and chew the hard middle caramel.

I remember doing a similar thing with Violet Crumbles, I would bite the chocolate off first then eat the honeycomb.

Another really big lolly favourite was the dusty Jelly Babies.

As a child, the first thing I ever bought was lollies and there was no other bigger purchase in life for a 10-year-old budgeting with 50¢ with the price of lollies costing 1¢, 2¢, 5¢ or three 2¢ lollies for 5¢.

It was always a test of patience for the shopkeeper not only with me making up my mind, but for every kid in the neighbourhood.

Living only a few houses down from the corner shop, we would often receive phone calls from some of the local elderly neighbours asking for me to run delivery errands.

The phone would ring, “Paully, can you run down to Mrs Sweeney’s, she’s got some money for you to get her a bottle of milk?” my mum would say.

I never hesitated and was out the door like a whippet. It was paying on average 20¢-50¢ just for delivering the milk. I ended up becoming the local neighbourhood runner.

And as quick as a flash, I was back at the corner shop to spend my money.

Ownership changed three times before it closed down in the 1990s and I had a great rapport with all the shopkeepers.

My mother still lives in the same house and when visiting her, I love taking a nostalgic walk down to where the corner shop once was; I feel like a kid again.

It’s disappointing to see the demise of my childhood corner shop, but I have all those great memories that now I enjoy sharing with my kids.

ecently I have come across situations where manners appear to be severely lacking! In the big scheme of things, exhibiting good manners might seem like a trivial point to quibble about. But I am inclined to think that many of us would agree, it is the ‘little things’ that make a big difference.

Here are some examples of ‘bad manners’ in business I have come across recently: • Being asked to send some information and receiving no reply. • Being asked to rush a task and receiving no acknowledgement of this favour. • No response to a detailed quotation with additional information requested by them.

All of these examples would have required little effort to respond. Personally, I am not looking for accolades when I do someone a favour! I am not expecting a detailed, effusive response.

But a simple acknowledgement (e.g. “thanks for sending that�) exhibits gratitude and lays the groundwork for

ongoing relationship. It is quite possible that all of these people were grateful, but without a response, I am left wondering if they are in fact UNgrateful.

More importantly, a lack of response makes me reticent to assist them in future. It shows a lack of respect for my time and for our potential working relationship. All relationships function best when there is mutual respect, a healthy balance of ‘give and take’, and gratitude for what the other person brings to the relationship.

The reasons for a lack of response to my above examples might include ‘I forgot’, ‘I didn’t have time’ or ‘I’m not obligated to reply’. Frankly, I think all those reasons are inexcusable! If you always ‘forget’, change your communication habits. If you don’t have enough time to reply ‘thank you’ in an email, you need to examine your time management skills. If you only respond when you are obligated to, I am betting you won’t be in business for very long!

Take your mum’s advice and use your manners: it will assist you greatly in business and in life.

What to do at a networking group • Walk in with a smile! • Your aim of networking should be relationship building – get to know, like and trust. Sales are unlikely to happen from the first few meetings – this is normal! • Take business cards and maybe flyers BUT don’t hand out unless requested! • Typically you are greeted by organisers so they will explain how things work and may help to connect you with other members. • Rather than stand alone look for a group of three or more people and politely ask to join their conversation. • Some groups will have all members introduce themselves. Prepare versions of your elevator pitch – from a 10 second “one on oneâ€? introduction through to 30 second to two minute group introductions. • If you’re new and not sure if the

meeting is reflective of normal, ask!

Sometimes events clash and numbers are down or the normal organiser is away. They may deserve another chance!

After the event • If you say you’ll do something – do it!

Send that article link, email or call to arrange that coffee catch-up! • Consider if the group meets your needs. Be careful not to write off a group too quickly, but also consider if the ongoing time commitment is justified. Allow for attending all meetings for that group, plus travel, plus actioning follow ups and meetings post event. • A good policy can be not to go to another event until you’ve made all the contacts from the last, but for core groups try to attend every meeting. • If suitable after building rapport with the organiser, see if you can have a speaking spot. These can be a brilliant way to showcase your business. Make sure the talk will provide real value to the attendees and could have a real benefit to your business.

When Garth came calling KATE REID

F

or Dean Simmons going from an original band to a Garth Brooks tribute artist was simply a matter of supply and demand.

“There’s a lot fewer people that can do what I can do with the Garth Brooks tribute than people that can play guitar and sing,” he laughed.

“We were playing in honky tonks and doing the bar scene, and doing four or five sets a night.

“It was great and fun, but when the

opportunity came for me to do Garth, I got to move from doing that to working in showrooms and being a part of these big multi-character production shows.”

In the music world the market for tribute acts is strong, and according to Dean it’s a pretty tight knit community, although he does admit that things can get a little weird when it comes to Elvis.

“You probably run into the whole identity crisis thing a little more in the ‘Elvis world’,” he laughed.

Along with his own tribute act, Dean has also delved into the business side of things with his agency and production company Top Shelf Tributes.

“Just being around all these people, you get to know the best of the best, so I decided to put together my own personal collection,” he said.

“We’ve had that for about five years now, so that’s my day job.”

This March, the entertainer and businessman will be coming to the Evan Theatre at Panthers for the ‘Cowboys and Angels’ tribute show which includes performances by Kim Simmons as Shania Twain and Adam D Tucker who takes on the music of Tim McGraw.

or three days each year, Katoomba transforms into the ukulele capital of the world.

Uke enthusiasts will once again get the chance to play and listen until their heart’s content when the eighth Blue Mountains Ukulele Festival kicks off this Friday, February 10.

The event, which is held across nine stages in and around the Carrington Hotel, will showcase ukulele artists including Hawaiian songstress YOZA. Another standout feature of the festival is its focus on encouraging new talent and community music.

The festival is a free event and will begin tonight with a dinner at the Carrington Hotel from 7pm.

Then on Saturday there will be five

free ukulele workshops held at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre. These include a ‘beginners in ukulele’ workshop, a ‘song’ workshop and ‘singing with your ukulele’ workshop.

While on Sunday there will be numerous jam and strum sessions on offer.

Run by volunteers, the Blue Mountains Ukulele Club puts on the event each year purely for their love of music and the instrument.

9,000 people are tipped to converge on the region across the three days.

This year there will be raffles and festival merchandise for sale as well as donation boxes which will help to cover the costs of the festival.

The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, The Carrington Hotel and The Paragon Café all generously provide venues for the festival as well as offering a range of meals and drinks for festival goers.

Everyone We Know

Blue Mountains hip hop group Thundamentals are currently celebrating two big milestones.

The release of their fourth studio album ‘Everyone We Know’ will also be the first project for the group’s newly created record label High Depth.

‘Everyone We Know’ was recorded at the studio of Hermitude in Sydney’s inner suburbs and includes the track ‘Think About It’, which featured on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 2016.

The single ‘Never Say Never’ is also getting a lot of airplay and the band have unveiled plans for a touring art exhibit based on the cover art.

Slip into a darker shade of grey when ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ hits cinemas this week.

Based on the bestselling book series by E.L James, the film is a follow up to the 2015 hit ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, which grossed over $560 million globally.

A cautious Ana Steele (Dakota Johnson) is lured back into a relationship with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) when he agrees to her demands for a new arrangement.

As trust and stability begins to develop between the pair, and Christian faces up to his inner demons, their relationship is threatened by shadowy figures from Christian’s past who are determined to

ruin their chance at a future together.

Joining the cast for this much anticipated sequel is Oscar winner Kim Basinger, along with ‘Hannibal’ star Hugh Dancy and Aussie Bella Heathcote.

This time around directing duties have been taken on by James Foley, who is best known for his work on the hit Netflix series ‘House of Cards’.

Ê Emma Freedman will host a new sports panel program for Channel Nine called ‘Sports Sunday’. The show, which premieres on March 5 at 10am, will include Peter FitzSimons, Liz Ellis, Michael Slater and Neil Breen, with regular appearances from sports stars such as Michael Clarke, John Steffensen, David Warner and Candice Warner. Ê As I predicted late last year, Channel Seven has finally confirmed it has dumped ‘The X Factor’ for 2017. After a disappointing season which, despite the strong talent, saw record low ratings, the network has decided to part ways with the singing contest after seven years.

‘The Voice’ now remains the lone singing contest on Aussie TV. Ê The ABC’s long-running video game show ‘Good Game’ has been axed. It’s understood two of the presenters on the show have signed on with Channel Seven, prompting the ABC to call time on the series after 10 years.

Ê It was one of the biggest shows back in the early 2000s, now ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’ is back courtesy of Netflix.

The popular streaming service is reviving the show after 10 years off the air. Eight episodes of ‘Queer Eye’ will return with a new cast later this year. Ê Discovery is set to launch a new documentary series profiling pilots who risk it all to help save lives at Mount Everest.

‘Everest Rescue’ premieres on Tuesday, February 21 at 8.30pm. Ê Former ‘MasterChef Australia’ contestants Andy Allen and Ben Milbourne will front a new local food and travel series for SBS Food Network. It premieres at 9.30pm this Wednesday, February 15 on SBS Food Network. Ê Hit Netflix show ‘Stranger Things’ will return with season two on October 31. Causes and treatments for painful ingrown nails Ingrown nails can be very painful, but it’s important to understand the cause so you can work on a solution with your Podiatrist...

Onychocryptosis, more commonly known as an ingrown nail, is one of the most common complaints we see as Podiatrists.

Signs and symptoms of an ingrown nail include: • Pain or tenderness of the affected side • Redness • Inflammation Causes: Incorrect cutting of nails: A good general rule to follow is to cut straight across the top of the nail. Cutting down the sides can tend to cause irritation as the nail grows through.

Natural shape of the nail: Involuted (curved) nails often dive deep down the nail sulcus, causing irritation and inflammation. Occasionally the nail plate can be too wide for the space it has to grow and therefore it sits underneath the skin.

Footwear: Tight fitting footwear around the forefoot area can irritate the nail sulcus and causes inflammation around the nail plate.

Family history: As with many things, if

there is a family history of ingrown nails you will be at a greater risk of developing them yourself.

When left for a long period of time, the risk of the area becoming infected increases, so it is important to manage in an efficient manner. First-line treatment involves clearing of the side of nail that is causing the pain and inflammation.

Whilst conservative care is a good way to manage ingrown nails, in some situations it is best to look at a more long-term solution for recurring ingrown nails to resolve the issue entirely.

As Podiatrists we are able to carry out

nail surgery which is otherwise known as a ‘partial nail avulsion’.

This treatment involves numbing of the affected toe with an injection of local anaesthetic. The nail portion causing the irritation is then removed, along with cauterisation of the nail matrix with a chemical called phenol.

If successful, the portion of nail that was removed will no longer grow back, resolving the pain associated with the ingrown nail.

For me this guy was one of those dogs and he sure doesn’t disappoint, he’s a happy and friendly guy that likes to get lots of love and treats. He will make a great pet for a family out there that’s looking to adopt.

When choosing a new dog there are many factors to consider.

People may buy a cute puppy as an impulse without thinking about their lifestyle, the dog’s characteristics and requirements. The wrong choice can lead to owner frustration and dogs developing behavioural issues like barking, destructive behaviour and anxiety. Pet owners may be unaware of health issues in young dogs or as they age.

The type of lifestyle you have is important. If you live in an apartment or townhouse a smaller dog is much more suitable. If you are active and have a lot of time to spend with your dog then a dog that requires a lot of exercise is ideal. If you have a quieter lifestyle then a smaller dog that is happy to hang around with you is much better.

Although every dog is an individual, dog breeds have general traits that are useful in considering their requirements and their common health concerns. A lot of dogs were bred for work and require a large amount of exercise and mental

stimulation, other breeds were developed primarily for companionship. Size is not everything. Small breeds are not always inactive and large breeds do not always require a lot of exercise. Terriers may be small but they were bred for work and are very active. Greyhounds are bred to sprint so they only require a small amount of exercise and will often spend most of their time lounging around.

It is also important to be aware of health issues that may occur. All dogs can develop health concerns but some breeds and types are more prone to certain issues. Brachycephalic dogs (those with short faces like bulldogs, boxers and pugs) are more likely to develop breathing issues, are more prone to heat stress and they may require surgery of their throats and noses. Larger breeds may be more likely to develop hip, elbow or shoulder dysplasia.

Seeing the puppy’s parents gives you a good idea of how big the pup will grow to and what condition the pups have been kept in. When purchasing a new dog, it is a legal requirement that they are microchipped before you take them. You should receive paperwork to change the ownership into your name or instructions for how to do it online. Most breeders will also have given the first vaccination and started parasite control. You will need to continue the vaccination course and parasite control.

We recommend desexing puppies at about six months of age to prevent unwanted litters, testicular and prostate disease in males and mammary cancer and pyometra (uterine infection) in females. Whatever the size or breed training and socialisation is vital. Dogs require socialisation within the first four months of life. Puppy preschool is a great start.

There is no Medicare for dogs, to help with the expenses of owning a dog we recommend investigating the many companies providing pet insurance. It is important to budget to have enough money for regular treatments like vaccinations and unforeseen issues like gastric upsets and injuries.

If you do not want a puppy you can consider a rescue dog. There are many dogs requiring new homes, consider AWL or RSPCA, they will help you select a dog that is right for you. There are also breed specific rescue groups. Check why the dog was put into rescue in case you need to address anxiety or health issues.

When buying a dog you are making a commitment for years. Researching breeds and speaking to breeders, veterinarians, veterinary nurses, friends and family will help you select a breed that suits your family and lifestyle.

By making an educated choice you can make the most of the joy of owning a dog and they can lead a happy and healthy life.

When should your child start learning to swim?

Swimming lessons can begin at six months of age, but you can start getting your child familiar with the water even before then...

It’s been a terrible summer of drownings, and as a consequence many parents I have spoken to want to get their children swimming as soon as possible.

I am often asked ‘How early should my child start swimming lessons?’

Swim Australia and the Australian Swim Schools Association recommend starting lessons from six months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this at home.

Babies are not born with a fear of the water, they have come from an aquatic environment in their mother’s womb and are usually happy and relaxed in the water. Fear and anxiety around water is acquired – as children develop independence and imagination some children will develop a fear of swimming or going under water. Make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head from birth.

Your six-month-old will then accept the water more readily, and with much less

fear, than an older child, allowing them to develop early water safety and awareness skills.

In addition to safety, there are other benefits for babies introduced to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and less restricted by gravity.

If a child is introduced to the water early, they will be more comfortable in the water and their movements will often be more natural than children who have started swimming at a later age.

In addition, a four-year project led by Griffith University has concluded that children who swim show more advanced physical and cognitive skills than those who don’t, including better visual-motor abilities (such as drawing lines and colouring in shapes), and excelling in following instructions, language, counting and solving mathematical problems.

Having trouble getting your baby to sleep? So was I (with all three) until I began their swimming lessons.

Warm water combined with gentle exercise will relax your baby and stimulate their appetite, with many parents reporting that their babies usually eat and sleep better after swimming – mine certainly did! Additionally, the uninterrupted quality time whilst swimming facilitates an even deeper bond between parent and

child, and as swimming becomes a natural part of your child’s weekly routine, a healthy exercise habit is created.

Most centres allow either parent to accompany their child at their lesson, so both have the chance to experience being in the water with their child – often parents take it in turns! And, as swimming lessons are often a child’s first formal activity or class for baby, they are excellent for socialising and play.

Please remember though that learning to swim is just one of the many layers of swim safety needed, a child who can swim is still not drown proof.

Fence the pool, shut the gate, learn CPR and most importantly, constantly supervise and have babies and toddlers within arm’s reach at all times.

The hot summer months are certainly here!

In the constant heat, those of us with air conditioners find relief while those without, try and do the best they can.

But there’s no doubt, as we experience days of around 40 degrees, that being outside is distinctly unpleasant! The dry mouth. The hot air blast against our skin.

The sweat, heat and humidity sapping our strength so that we long for a cool drink to bring relief.

These images help us understand some parts of the Bible such as the Psalm which says, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water”.

Just as water gives us life, relief and refreshment, so too can we find life, relief and refreshment from coming to God, but especially in those times when all around us seems “dry and weary”.

It is sad how some people underestimate God, as if by following Him, He will lay heavy burdens on us, robbing us of joy.

Yet, this is not so.

God has revealed His goodness and faithfulness to us in the sending of Jesus

into our world. Jesus revealed kindness and compassion.

Ultimately Jesus showed His trustworthiness to us in laying down His life for us so we could experience times of refreshing that come from Him as we trust in Him and give our lives to Him.

This is a great promise from God, that just as a person craves the refreshment of their favourite cool drink, the Bible makes it clear that saying “yes” to Jesus will bring refreshment to our soul, to our inner being.

How eating at home can help you become healthier We all love eating out, but finding that same passion for dining in can be the first step to gaining a healthier, happier lifestyle...

With the recognition that most people who lose weight on diets end up putting the weight back on, it’s good to see that our focus has started to move to action (making healthy choices) rather than outcome (weight loss).

This coming week is Healthy Weight Week, and while the name is probably in need of a makeover, the advice is focused on realistic behaviour change that we can all benefit from.

The Dietitians Association of Australia have one simple message with this initiative – do more cooking and less eating out.

The reason for this is simple – preparing meals at home allows us to know exactly what goes into our food and helps us to control our portions. I’m sure all of us have had dining experiences where we’ve eaten way more than we needed simply because it was there.

Now encouraging people to cook is all well and good, but it’s important to address the main barriers that keep people out of the kitchen.

Generally this falls into one of two categories: lack of time or lack of drive.

For those that say time is the factor keeping them from cooking more often my advice is boring but effective: preparation, preparation, preparation.

This can be as simple as making a double serve of dinner to take for lunch, chopping veggies or salad in bulk so the prep work is done in advance, or learning a couple of healthy meals that can be cooked in large portions and frozen or kept for the coming days.

Lack of drive is a tricky one, and something I can sympathise with.

he Penrith Panthers have flown home with a cheque worth $240,000 after they unexpectedly finished runners-up at last weekend’s Auckland Nines.

After sending over a team largely full of unknowns, the young Panthers shocked the competition by winning every single game leading into the final before falling short to the Sydney Roosters 10-8 in the decider.

Rainbow socks help raise awareness of organ donation JADE ALIPRANDI

ver 500 players from the Greater Western Baseball Association donned rainbow socks for their games last Saturday to help raise funds for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation.

Among the players on the day was St Clair resident Thomas Wells, who the Weekender caught up with last year ahead of his third liver transplant.

After successfully receiving his transplant, Thomas was able to partake in the Transplant Games that were held in Penrith last September, earning himself several gold, silver and bronze medals throughout the competition.

Now well enough, Thomas has been able to get back into baseball, after playing for the last four years.

“He was getting quite sick before his transplant so he unfortunately had to stop playing,” Mum, Yvette Wells said.

“But he’s back on the diamond now as a great pitcher for the team and is stronger than ever.”

Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation is all about organ donation and was founded after seven-year-old Zaidee Turner died suddenly in 2004 from a burst blood vessel in her brain known as a Cerebral Aneurism.

Zaidee’s parents, Kim and Allan, founded Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation not long after.

Zaidee became the only child in Victoria under the age of 16 and one of the youngest Australians to donate her organs and tissues at the time.

“It was amazing to see the support from everyone on the day for the foundation. Josh Gately did an amazing job at organising it all,” Mrs Wells said.

“Sports is always competitive but at the same time is amazing. Every team I saw play were wearing the rainbow socks throughout.”

The 20-year-old, who also plays netball himself, said it was a proud moment to be chosen.

“Umpires get selected similar to the way players do,” he revealed.

“You umpire for the whole week of Nationals and then you nominate to tour. And then if you get chosen, you get chosen.

“As a male umpire it’s a big honour to represent your country in a predominantly female sport.”

The Indoor Netball Junior World Series will be contested among three nations from July 9 to July 15 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Competing in a number of different age groups, Australia will do battle against netball giants South Africa and New Zealand for junior indoor netball supremacy.

All four members – Tegan, Brittney, Kyah and Corey – currently play out of St Marys Indoor Sports and Recreation for local side the St Marys Scorchers.

Wanderers launch ACL campaign The Western Sydney Wanderers this week launched their third AFC Champions League (ACL) campaign at The Hive at Rosehill Racecourse.

Hosted by Adam Peacock, the night celebrated the Wanderers’ third entry into the ACL following last season’s league performance earning them Australia’s second place in the 2017 tournament.

Showing off the Club’s home jersey for the 2017 ACL including front-of-shirt partner AETOS Capital Group and hosting dignitaries and business partners from Australia, China, Japan and South Korea, the night was a moment to reflect on past successes and prepare for the tournament ahead, which will kick-off for the Wanderers with an enticing Match Day 1 fixture with Japan heavyweights Urawa Red Diamonds.

few years after the Western Weekender last caught up with the sporting successes of McCarthy Catholic College, the Emu Plains-based school is continuing to produce outstanding young sports stars.

In 2014, the Weekender profiled 14 McCarthy students who represented Australia on the world stage – three years later and the school is continuing to breed sporting talent by the bucket load.

Recently, McCarthy sent its first ever Women’s Rugby Sevens team to compete at the Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens Carnival, held at Blue Mountains Grammar School.

Not only did the talented crop of students surprise many onlookers on debut, McCarthy ended up winning the Grand Final 22-10 over Central Coast Women’s Youth Rugby.

“It was an excellent day, very well organised and the girls loved it,” Sports Coordinator, Craig Beacroft said.

“To be honest we weren’t sure what to expect from them. They are a talented group of girls who have played different levels of OzTag, so we knew they would have the ball skills but we weren’t sure how they would match up physically – they certainly surprised us.”

Individually, another talented McCarthy student that continues to go from strength to strength is rugby, OzTag and touch football star Madison HigginsAshby.

Recently the 15-year-old returned from New Zealand where she guided her Australian U17 touch football team to a 2-1 series win over the Kiwis.

Madison was named the tournament’s leading try scorer with six tries.

“Madison continues to reach new heights and this weekend is headed to State Cup for OzTag,” Mr Beacroft said.

But it isn’t just the girls who are setting the field alight, two rugby league players Jai Wynbergen-Tikoko and Aman Singh were selected in Penrith’s Harold Matthews team for the upcoming season.

“Aman is a very talented, hard working

player and a great kid who is very dedicated to both his school work and sport,” Mr Beacroft said.

“Jai is another very talented athlete who plays with the St Marys club, and we are very fortunate to have both boys here.”

Also representing the Panthers in 2017 is Year 11 student Emma Parker, who was selected in the first ever Penrith Women’s U18 rugby league team that will contest the inaugural Tarsha Gale Cup. “It’s going to be a different experience and it will be a big thing for women’s rugby league,” the 16-year-old said of the new competition.

“It’s going to be exciting taking on a whole bunch of teams – we have Wests this week before going down to Canberra next weekend.”

While McCarthy’s success is evident with this new crop of youngsters, it seems there could even be more on the way.

“They are a really talented group and I think our young ones coming through are very talented as well,” Mr Beacroft said.

Football Wanderers restore belief after 3-1 win over Wellington NATHAN TAYLOR

he Western Sydney Wanderers are back in the top six after defeating Wellington 3-1 last Saturday night in New Zealand.

A goal by Nicolas Martinez and a double from Brendon Santalab handed the Wanderers their fourth win of the season.

In a match they dominated from the very beginning, the Wanderers scored early through Santalab but the goal was denied by officials who claimed the 34-year-old striker was offside.

Speaking after the match, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said his side played with a lot of confidence and belief.

“We executed better, we put away our opportunities,” he said.

“We almost were dealt a blow at the start when we had a goal disallowed but the guys controlled what they could very well. In the end, we probably could’ve had a few more.”

Martinez, who notched up his second goal in 10 games, said he was pleased with the team’s performance as a whole.

“Of course I’m happy with my own performance but without the team it’s nothing,” the 29-year-old said.

Popovic, who was under immense pressure from the fan base heading into last weekend’s game, said the victory will give his side extra confidence heading into this Sunday’s game against Central Coast.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith are back in the winner’s circle, defeating Hawkesbury in Round 12 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a two day match at Owen Earle Oval last weekend, Penrith won the toss and sent Hawkesbury into bat first.

Hawkesbury had a shocking start to their first innings and were dismissed for 115.

When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they reached Hawkesbury’s target with ease, declaring at 4/150.

The clash then went into a second innings with Hawkesbury scoring 180 before being dismissed.

When Penrith hit the crease, they managed 3/149 before stumps ended the match.

Ryan Smith was best with the ball for Penrith taking 10/128 across the two innings while Matthew Hopkins led the way with the bat scoring a combined total of 91.

Penrith will look to make it two in a row when they meet Eastern Suburbs at Waverley Oval this Saturday.

BASEBALL: Penrith were back to their winning ways in both games against Manly during Round 16 of the NSW State Baseball League competition.

In the mid-week game last Wednesday night, Penrith prevailed 4-2 while last Sunday afternoon Penrith were in fine form winning 11-1.

AFLW: The GWS Giants have lost their historic first game of the AFL Women’s competition, going down to the Adelaide Crows by 36 points.

Penrith local Renee Tomkins was selected to start the match and put in a strong performance on debut.

However, the home side dominated the game from start to finish and ran out comfortable winners 48-12.

“For a first hit-out, I was really pleased with their effort,” Giants coach Tim Schmidt said.

The Giants will look to get their first win on the board when they battle last-start winners Carlton on Saturday.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks held their annual awards presentation last Sunday, with a number of players taking home awards.

The Duck of the Year award went to Joshua King (Colts) and Ryan Higgins (Division 1) while Rookie of the Year was won by Cooper Sherrin Green (Colts) and Wade Chandler (Division 1).

One of the big surprises of the afternoon was Division 1 Defensive Lineman of the Year, which was awarded to long-time player Ben Cummins.

African adventure NATHAN TAYLOR

trio of local teenage netballers and one enthusiastic umpire will travel to South Africa this July after they were selected to represent Australia at the Indoor Netball Junior World Series.

14-year-old Emu Plains local Tegan Dunn along with 14-year-old Brittney Archer from St Clair and 13-year-old Kyah Vaeila (shadow player) were each chosen to represent their country following outstanding performances at the recent Indoor Netball Junior Nationals in Melbourne.

Speaking with the Weekender, Tegan and Brittney said they were over the moon to be selected in the national team.

“It was pretty special when my name got called out,” Tegan said.

“I honestly didn’t expect to get chosen, I was really surprised and thankful,” Brittney added.

“I’ve always wanted to go out of the country, so this will be very exciting for me.”

Glenmore Park resident and long-time netball official Corey Tauariki will also make the trip to Johannesburg as an umpire.
