hey say life can change in the blink of an eye, and that’s exactly what happened to Glenmore Park resident Richie Greer.

While standing in the kitchen talking to his 10-year-old son on Monday, January 4, Mr Greer felt a jolt in his back and within minutes he was sitting in a chair unable to feel his legs.

Since being hospitalised at Liverpool Hospital, doctors have been continuously running tests and still don’t have a clear cut answer for Mr Greer.

“It’s a lot harder not knowing because if I had some idea of what it is then I could at least come up with a plan of attack to get back on my feet but I can’t even do that,” the 39-year-old said.

“Being a personal trainer, I have a lot of understanding about injuries and how to try and fix them, so to not really know right now is very frustrating to say the least.”

Although he has had previous back problems, doctors say this is not related in any way and it could be a form of ‘lost communication’ resulting in some form of a motor neurone disorder.

“It’s like having a computer and the hardware has crashed and just part of it hasn’t been able to reboot,” Mr Greer explained.

Somewhere between the brain and the neurological pathway down the back, the circuit has been cut short.

Mr Greer has also developed epilepsy from this unexplained disorder after suffering several seizures in the past month.

Teen killed at notorious intersection Residents warned somebody would die, now their point has been proven in the most tragic of ways TROY DODDS

family has been left devastated after a teenage boy was killed in a car accident at Cranebrook on Monday afternoon.

17-year-old Kieren Birks died at the scene of the accident at the notorious intersection of Andromeda Drive and The Northern Road.

It is understood the teenager was turning right out of Andromeda Drive onto the Northern Road about 3.30pm on Monday when his Ford Laser was hit by a truck travelling north.

A ‘Gofundme’ page has been set up to assist with the financial struggles his family now faces.

“So, as we all know Kieren sadly passed away today, no one ever thinks about the financial struggle people face when death comes around, so me and a few of the girls in his older sister’s year want to help make this tragic time a tiny bit easier and help out his family with some money donated by all his friends, family, teachers, and fellow class mates,” the page’s creator, Chloe Byrnes posted.

“Every little bit counts and every little bit will be appreciated.”

Hundreds of dollars have already been donated, and special tributes to the teenager have been posted online.

“Such a beautiful young man and from a lovely family. My heart is heavy and thoughts are with his family and friends,” Kathy Trewartha posted.

The tragedy has also prompted renewed calls for upgrades to the Andromeda Drive and Northern Road intersection, which locals say is dangerous.

In 2013, residents went public with major concerns about the intersection, with one local saying: “I’m just waiting for a fatality”.

Penrith City Councillor John Thain has long campaigned for the intersection to be fixed.

“It needs to be fixed urgently – there’s no ifs or buts,” Cr Thain said.

“In 2013, we indicated that it was a disaster waiting to happen.”

A Council spokesperson said they have continued to lobby the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) for funding.

“Council has been lobbying RMS as early as 2013 for improvements to be made to the whole intersection of Northern Road and Andromeda Drive of which the Northern Road is a state funded and managed road,” the spokesperson said.

n Tuesday evening I took a drive out to the intersection of The Northern Road and Andromeda Drive in Cranebrook, where 17-year-old Kieren Birks tragically lost his life on Monday.

I’ve been through the intersection a thousand times but after talking with Councillor John Thain on Tuesday, I wanted to have a really good look at it.

Councillor Thain, among many others, has been vocal over the years about how important it was to upgrade this particular intersection. His point has now been proven in the most tragic of ways.

The intersection is a nightmare that defies logic, is confusing and is simply inadequate for the traffic it handles.

Kieren Birks was a novice driver and, it would seem, made an error of judgement that had the most awful of consequences.

But you can’t help but feel angry that the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), who control The Northern Road, have sat on their hands and done nothing for years despite constant community concerns about the intersection.

In the October 25, 2013 edition of The Western Weekender, we ran a story with the headline: “Blame game: Intersection must be fixed”.

It spoke of the ongoing problems at the intersection and of a disagreement between Penrith Council and the RMS over whose responsibility it is – given The Northern Road is an RMS-controlled road and Andromeda Drive is a Councilcontrolled road.

It seems pretty obvious to me that it’s the RMS’ responsibility to fix given The Northern Road carries the bulk of the traffic.

Last year Council advised the RMS that it recommended a roundabout be placed at the intersection. Almost a year later the RMS has done zilch.

In fact they have continued to allow perhaps the most ridiculous intersection in the Penrith LGA to continue to operate as it is.

The fact that traffic turning left off The Northern Road into Andromeda Drive has to randomly give way to traffic turning right from the other direction simply lacks common sense and seems to defy the road rules that operate everywhere else.

It would seem that the bizarre give way structure was actually implemented by Council – whoever decided that should be given a performance review immediately.

Somebody at the RMS endorsed the new structure – give them a performance review as well.

What’s worse is that for the last three years, it’s stayed this way. And in my view the RMS is the department that has blood on its hands.

Council knows the intersection is a problem but can only do so much given The Northern Road is controlled by the RMS. It has been lobbying the RMS since 2013 for improvements to be made to the entire intersection.

I can reveal that Council received correspondence in October last year from Roads Minister Duncan Gay, advising that a funding application has been submitted by the RMS for safety improvements at the intersection.

Five months later and it’s cold comfort to the family of Kieren Birks.

Mr Gay has been in the Penrith LGA a lot since he became Roads Minister. I wonder how many times he has visited the intersection of The Northern Road and Andromeda Drive?

Politicians spend a lot of time patting themselves on the back when it comes to road upgrades. They so often hold photo opportunities when funding is secured, when construction begins and when construction is finished. Heck, they even hold “50% completion” photo opportunities.

The soft PR crap is fine until you realise what a joke it is when we lose a 17-yearold with his life ahead of him, all because nobody could pull their finger out in the last three years and fix a problem so many people have been so vocal about.

Eventually, The Northern Road and Andromeda Drive intersection will be fixed.

I just hope we don’t lose another life before it finally gets done.

abor is calling on the State Government not to adopt changes to Opal fares that could see Penrith commuters paying up to $960 more per year.

Changes suggested by The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to start in July this year mean Penrith commuters travelling to and from Central five days a week could pay $692 more, while to and from Parramatta could cost $958 more.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car met with Shadow Minister for Transport, Ryan Park at Penrith Station last Friday to ask the Government to scrap these changes that will affect tens of thousands of western Sydney commuters.

“My challenge is on behalf of the local community that Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies come out and say what they think about these IPART recommendations,” Ms Car said.

“It’s not fair that our community is slugged upwards of $700 a year more when they are doing the right thing.”

Mr Park said it’s problematic to increase prices for western Sydney commuters, as it will inhibit them from accessing public transport.

“It’s clearly not right [that it won’t cost more]. These increases are real. People understand prices go up, but they don’t expect them to go up by this amount.”

Mr Park said changes in the cost of fares need to be just that – fair.

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the whole point of the IPART review is to make the ticketing system fairer.

“At the moment customers who switch between trains, buses, ferries and light rail are charged for each separate journey, which can make travel costly,” he said.

“With millions of customers now using Opal, it’s time to take another look at the system.”

Cambridge Park: Police chopper targeted by laser

Werrington Downs: Man tried to groom child for sex

Inquiries are continuing after police helicopter PolAir 4 was dangerously targeted by a laser light over Cambridge Park on Saturday.

At about 12.30am the helicopter was targeted with a red laser light as it was conducting patrols over Cambridge Park.

The crew were able to identify the source of the light, which allegedly came from a property on Herbert Street.

Police from St Marys Local Area Command attended the location and spoke with two teenagers, aged 14 and 16, about the incident.

About 12 minutes later, the helicopter was also subject to a bird-strike whilst at the scene. The pilot immediately returned to base as a precaution and landed safely.

A man was charged last week after an investigation by police found that he was allegedly grooming a female child in Queensland.

On Thursday, January 7, the child was using an online gaming site when she became involved in a conversation with another user of the site.

Further conversations via text message took place between the girl and the other user over the next 24 hours with police alleging the other user was attempting to groom the child for sexual activity.

At about 9.00am on Wednesday, February 3, police executed a search warrant at an address in Werrington Downs and arrested a 23-year-old man.

He was charged with a range of offences.

Kingswood: Firearm and drugs found in vehicle

Penrith: Man caught taking rude pics with secret camera

Two people were arrested after police allegedly located a loaded firearm and large quantity of illicit drugs in a car parked in Kingswood last Friday.

At about 1.30am on Friday, February 5, police attached to St Marys Local Area Command approached a vehicle parked on Victoria Street, Kingswood, and spoke to its two occupants. During a subsequent search of the vehicle and the occupants, officers allegedly located a loaded .44 Magnum revolver, a large quantity of illicit drugs and cash. A 27-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested but have been released pending further investigation.

A man was caught allegedly taking photographs up women’s skirts at a major shopping centre in Penrith last week.

On Wednesday, February 3, the 59-yearold man was allegedly walking around the shopping centre with a camera on his right shoe. Just after 12.00pm, a member of the public saw the man as he entered another store and became suspicious of his actions.

The member of the public managed to detain the man, remove the camera from his foot, and take him to the concierge desk where police were then called.

The man was arrested and charged with ‘film person’s private parts without consent’.

onstruction has started on western Sydney’s first multi-disciplinary centre dedicated to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Former NRL star and Chairman of the Luke Priddis Foundation (LPF), Luke Priddis, and wife Holly demolished their first wall inside their future state-of-theart High Street premises on Monday.

Mr Priddis started the Foundation after noticing a lack of resources and support for their own son, Cooper, who was diagnosed with autism at just two-years-old.

“I wanted to provide families much like my own the ability to access support services and programs that would make a difference in their child’s life and the lives of their family,” he said.

The LPF has supported over 450 families through facilitated parental support programs, sensory occupational therapy sessions, social skills programs and awareness campaigns.

With programs for children aged 18-months-old to 18-years-old, demand for group programs has increased by 650 per cent in just 18 months.

“We are expecting that to increase further when the centre opens and is accredited through the National Disabil-

Paramedics were called to the Pembroke Street address just after 4pm on Tuesday where they located the man suffering leg injuries.

It is understood he attempted to enter his van as it began to roll away when he has slipped and been hit by the rolling vehicle.

He was treated on scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital.

t’s not the first time residents have felt let down by politicians, but that’s exactly what Stephen Lynch heard from a meeting with Penrith Community Men’s Shed last week.

New to politics but a ‘proud westie’, Mr Lynch is Lindsay’s Federal candidate for the Nick Xenophon Team (NXT), a party who claim to be a bridge between the left and the right.

“I think they are bit jaded by politicians and let down by the whole process,” Mr Lynch said of the Men’s Shed members.

“They say leaders come out, promise the world and go back on their promises, and they’re growing sick of it.”

Mr Lynch said the Men’s Shed made it clear they’re looking for someone to fill that void, and provide a common sense alternative.

“That’s what the NXT provides to them, an option to vote for a party that votes for working class values without being tied to the ideology of the left,” he said.

The Men’s Shed spend their time creating projects with a primary objective to boost participation and inclusion in the community.

Communication is the key to Council’s success, community panel finds

While Council’s Community Panel dedicated their time and learnt a whole lot about Penrith Council, there are several who are sceptical of its impact and intentions.

Conservative Councillor Marcus Cornish said while he thanks the Panel for participating, they were essentially paid to usurp Council.

“That’s the job of the Council. I think it would be received much better if it were called consultation,” he said.

Cr Cornish said it just reinforced issues Council already set.

“Maurice Girotto’s ‘Welcome to Penrith’ signs issue, Mark Davies and his river precinct issue,” he said.

“Their recommendations are reinforcing what we already know, the biggest issue they came to is parking and roads and everyone knows I’ve been banging on about that for years.”

Panel member, Shane Bryant, who was one of 34 who got paid to participate, said it was political justification.

“I got on the committee because I thought this might be a bit different,” he said.

“The committee was steered as to what to talk about, and we didn’t get down to gutsy issues.”

During six days between September and December last year, residents gathered to find answers to issues in the community.

The attempt at deliberative democracy

by Penrith Council sought to find what services and infrastructure everyday people believe Penrith needs, and how they suggest it’s paid for.

The Panel’s recommendations were presented at a Council meeting on Monday night.

“It was probably with a bit of trepidation that Council went into this exercise,” said Deputy Mayor, Ross Fowler.

“It has allowed us to hear from a very diverse group in the community on how they think this Council operates.”

The randomly selected Community Panel is an initiative of the newDemocracy Foundation, a not-for-profit group that researches how decision-making works in democratic institutions. newDemocracy Program Manager, Georgina Inwood, said the Panel handed Council a clear document containing what

“What they are saying broadly is that Council has been doing a fantastic job, but they weren’t aware of the breadth of what Council did,” she said.

Resident and Panel member, James Irwin, said one of the biggest issues they found was communication from Council to the community.

“A lot of times [in meetings] we emphasized that communication is key,” he said.

“A lot of people in the local area aren’t aware of the great things people are doing in the community. It was pleasing for us to know that for so many things, Council was already in progress with.”

Panel member, Katherine Hardacre, said the group assessed everyone’s ideas based on cost, impact, long-term benefit and sustainability.

Council accepted the recommendations in the Panel’s report across 43 areas of focus.

Valentine’s Day

Through it all, love stands tall Love blossomed on the other side of the world, but Luis and Maria made Australia their home DALE DRINKWATER

ince 1953, this Kingswood couple have stuck together through thick and thin.

Luis Sequen, 83, and his wife Maria, 80, have been married for an incredible 61 years this year, lasting through circumstances that would put insurmountable pressure on any relationship.

“We got married in Uruguay in South America in July, 1955,” Mrs Sequen said.

“I met him on September 5, two years before that, and I liked him because he was a good dancer.”

Mrs Sequen said from then their love blossomed, and one year after getting married, they started a family in Uruguay.

However, Mr Sequen said things started to get hard as work was winding down in the country and the family began to struggle.

“After World War II, jobs were very hard to get and it was getting very hard to live,” Mr Sequen said.

“I tried to work in Argentina for a couple of months, but our children were very little.

“Later on I worked in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and I told her we had to move there.”

It wasn’t until 1969 that the couple migrated to Australia with their three children aged six, 11 and 13, to give the family a better opportunity in life.

“We started in housing for immigrants.

There were many immigrants from Chile, Uruguay and Argentina, but I was lucky, I got a job,” he said.

“Now we’ve got everything. We have a beautiful house and we have food.”

Speaking absolutely no English upon arrival, the family relied heavily on each other, and Mrs Sequen said she had to leave the children on weekends for work.

“Our youngest would say, ‘Mum, don’t leave’... I wanted to cry,” she said.

“I’d say ‘I’m sorry, I came to this country to help your father, we have to buy a house, you have your sister, you have your brother’.

“This is what I had to do for a couple of years.”

Now the couple have eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter, and said they are blessed to have each other, and to have worked it out through the hardest of times.

They’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day together on Sunday, just like they have for the past six decades, proving that love really can last.

Community Panel delivers recommendations The Community Panel this week delivered its recommendations to Council at its ordinary meeting. The panel of 35 residents from all walks of life represented a diverse cross-section of the community from right across Penrith. Members spent a combined total of more than 1500 hours in finalising their report.

The recommendations tell us what the community sees as the priorities for our City. They are very much a validation of the direction Council is taking to grow our city for the future.

On behalf of the residents of Penrith and Council I would like to thank the panel members for their hard work and commitment. The members undertook the project with enthusiasm and dedication spending many hours examining Council’s operations and services along with asking plenty of

questions of us, to come up with their recommendations.

I applaud the hard work and enthusiasm with which the panel undertook the project to understand the complexities in running a growing regional city. Council has been open and willing as the panel investigated and explored the opportunities and challenges for them to deliver recommendations to Council that reflect the community’s aspirations.

Council has always prided itself on its efforts to consult with the community, but this took us in a new direction in comprehensive consultation. The City and Council are going through a period of rapid growth and the Community Panel was an essential part of our looking to the future to ensure we are on the right track.

Valentine’s Day

ewly engaged Penrith locals Hayley Mclean, 23, and Joshua Stephens, 25, are looking forward to spending the rest of their lives together.

After having mutual friends for years and growing up in the same area, it wasn’t until six years ago they finally crossed paths during a night out.

“We both grew up in Penrith, and we had mutual friends our whole teenage years and never met until that one night,” Ms Mclean said.

Ms Mclean was just 18, when she was finally introduced to a 20-year-old Mr Stephens at Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

“We had a mutual friend and the first time he met me he actually thought I was someone else’s girlfriend,” she said.

“I told him I wasn’t, and he said he fell in love with me that night. When we got together he said that I was the girl he was going to marry.”

The couple got engaged last September and plan to exchange vows in 2017.

Ms Mclean said it’s important to try to keep spending quality time together.

“We still go out for dinners and have date nights every week, and we like to travel, that’s a big thing,” she said.

Ms Mclean said in today’s disposable culture, people want things right now without working for it.

“You need to work for a relationship,” she said.

“There are so many divorces in today’s society, and people give up so easy.”

Working on a relationship for Ms Mclean means making sure communication is kept up with.

“If something is annoying one another you actually need say it so you don’t dwell on it,” she said.

rue locals, Yvonne Weller, 68, and husband Bruce, 70, have lived in western Sydney since 1960.

In fact, the couple, who are celebrating 51 years together this year, are living in Mr Weller’s childhood home in St Marys.

When she was just 14, Mrs Weller met her husband through his sister, and one night she went by his house to invite him to the picture theatre in Queen Street, St Marys.

“I told him I was going to the movies and it went over his head,” she said.

“His mum had to tell him ‘I think Yvonne likes you’ and it clicked, and he ended up coming to the movies that night.”

That date changed both their lives.

“You know how silly you are when you’re 14 and 15, and I thought I was going to marry him,” she said.

And at 17-years-old, she did.

Mrs Weller said it was through love, support and encouragement that the couple grew together through all these years.

“I was very self conscious when I was young, and he nurtured that in me and allowed me to grow into a confident woman,” she said.

“He’s funny and he jokes and he carries on, and I think we just complement each other.

“We are very different, but it’s about perseverance and sticking with it.”

With stressful jobs, the couple used to try to go out for dinner every week.

“He worked in a mental health facility and I worked in a prison,” she said.

“It always seemed a neutral ground and issues could be left there instead of bringing it home.”

After having children young, they became young grandparents.

That gave Mr Weller a new lease on life, and a new audience.

“He is a joker. He teaches the grandchildren really quite silly nursery rhymes by changing the words around,” Mrs Weller said.

Away from the family, Mrs Weller said they continue to spend quality time together, and they’ll be doing that this Valentine’s Day as well.

“On Sundays we might just go out for coffee to the river, or go to Panthers Leagues Club for a meal. Or we often get the train to the city and have coffee at Circular Quay,” she said.

“It’s just the little things.”

Instead of getting an infringement in the post, you can now pay your fines and review photos of infringements right from your smartphone.

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet said drivers now have all the tools they need to make late payment fees a thing of the past.

“No one likes getting a fine, but even worse is forgetting to pay and winding up with a late fee as well,” he said.

The app will alert drivers shortly after receiving a road or traffic fine, allow drivers to nominate the correct driver and initiate a review.

In addition, all NSW Government online services are now in one central location, at MyServiceNSW. “Too often online services for different government agencies require different websites and multiple accounts,” Mr Perrottet said.

With MyServiceNSW, customers will be able to securely store information in a digital profile, removing the need to re-enter their details for different government services.

It’s time to make a healthy change Healthy Weight Week aims to improve western Sydney’s shocking obesity statistics DALE DRINKWATER

t’s the statistics we’ve seen time and time again – 60 per cent of western Sydney residents are overweight, and almost half of those are obese.

We also know that if this percentage of our population were to lose just five per cent of their weight, it could decrease their chance of developing diabetes by 40 to 60 per cent.

But when will we actually take action on bad eating habits and lack of exercise?

Well just like State Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies and her office staff, there’s no better time to start than Healthy Weight Week from February 15 to 21.

“We need to encourage people to make small changes to lifestyle habits which can make an enormous difference to overall health,” Mrs Davies said.

Mrs Davies and her office have a combined weight of 400.1 kilograms, and will be using all the Healthy Weight Week resources available to change their eating and exercise habits.

“Residents can get involved by undertaking the cooking pledge during the seven days of Healthy Weight Week,” she said.

“For cooking inspiration and tips, a free cookbook is available with recipes for everyone, including rocket salad and tahini yoghurt, Cajun chicken burgers and pumpkin and pesto pasta.”

“The NSW Government recognises how important good nutrition is to wellbeing,” she said.

“It’s why reducing incidence of childhood obesity is one of the Premier’s 12 priorities.”

Tackling obesity at a young age will lead to better health outcomes in the long term by decreasing the likelihood of children carrying weight into adulthood and risking chronic disease later in life.

Ran by the Dieticians Association of Australia, Healthy Weight Week will encourage smaller portion sizes, which will in turn reduce kilojoule intake and manage weight.

New record for organ donations

Slice of the profits a nice bonus for pizza lover Dane

2015 saw the highest number of deceased organ donations ever in NSW, it was announced last week.

NSW Organ and Tissue Donation Service figures show there were 127 deceased organ donors last year, surpassing the previous record of 102 donors in 2013, and exceeding the target of 116 donors for 2015.

Glenmore Park resident, Katelan Devine, has spoken out about the importance of organ donation after her daughter, Kyla, was saved when she had a liver transplant at just four-and-a-half months old.

“The whole process is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, and it just all happened very quickly – you don’t have a lot of time to process everything,” Ms Devine said.

Now at the age of eight, Kyla has just celebrated her eighth transplant anniversary.

“Organ donation is a brilliant thing,” Ms Devine said.

“You have two emotions at the time when you get the call and someone says there is an organ waiting for your daughter. One is the happy emotion of knowing your little girl will be saved and then immediately following that is the grief you feel for the family who just lost someone.”

Nepean Hospital Donation Specialist Nurse, Jodie Cowell, said she urges everyone to talk about organ donation.

“What helps families make the decision about donation is knowing what their loved one wanted,” she said.

lenmore Park resident Dane Blom has found the recipe for success through Dominos’ Pizza Mogul.

To date Mr Blom has cooked up almost $5,500 doing something that started out as a fun activity to do with the kids.

Pizza Mogul is an interactive retail platform that allows you to earn a portion of the profits by creating your own pizza, branding and sharing it on social media.

Mr Blom said it started out as a novelty at first when it all began in August 2014.

“I saw the idea on TV and thought it could be something fun to do with the kids,” he said.

“My kids love helping me create new flavours and often help come up with the name for my pizzas too.”

Known as #shakedown, Mr Blom has been working closely with Stefan So, franchisee of the newly opened Dominos in Glenmore Park.

The pair are working together to help

provide vouchers for ‘Player of the Match’ at Mr Blom’s children’s soccer and netball games.

“I’ve also got 20 Pizzas to give away at some point so I’ll be heading down to the Dominos Glenmore Park store in the coming weeks to give everyone a chance to taste the full #shakedown range,” Mr Blom said.

Mr Blom currently has 15 pizzas on the menu, and there’s plenty more ideas being worked on.

Council rates set to rise again Your rates could be increasing from the next financial year.

At a meeting on Monday night, Penrith Council gave the go-ahead to apply for another Special Rate Variation (SRV) from the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, IPART. “It’s going to add a considerable amount of money to the bottom line of Council,” Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler said.

“Councillor Cornish wants six new car parks, Councillor Crameri wants pot holes fixed. We don’t want to put the burden back on rate payers, we are deferring the burden of ratepayers in the future.”

Council’s application is to renew the AREAS SRV plus add an additional SRV phased in over four years.

In 2016-17, the SRV is proposed to be 9.09 per cent and include the renewal of AREAS and the standard annual rate peg.

Then in 2017-18 it will increase by five per cent, then 5.2 per cent in 2018-19 and 5.4 per cent in 2019-20, with a cumulative increase of 27 per cent over four years.

This will increase the average rate by $1.06 per week in the first year, with a cumulative increase of $3.71 per week over the four years.

Councillor Kevin Crameri and Councillor Marcus Cornish did not support the increase, that once phased in, will be a permanent increase to rates.

100,000 more trees coming to South Penrith and Emu Plains Penrith Council will plant around 100,000 trees in South Penrith and Emu Plains through the Federal Government’s 20 Million Trees Program.

Council received close to $605,000 through the program which aims to “re-establish green corridors and urban forests”.

It will see 96,000 trees and shrubs

planted across South Penrith and 3000 in Bunyarra Drive reserve, Emu Plains.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said the mass planting will not only increase the diversity of flora and fauna in our city, the green cover it creates will help “cool our city”.

“Temperatures in Penrith are on the rise, in part because of what is known as the

Urban Heat Island Effect – an increase in heat absorbing surfaces like pavements, roads and buildings. To combat this effect we’ve established a Cooling the City Strategy,” she said.

The reserve in Emu Plains is currently open grassland. The new trees will create a cooling island around the concrete footpaths which cut through the reserve.

Woman arrested A woman all but turned herself into police when she was charged with a mid-range PCA on Sunday.

At about 1.00am on Sunday, February 7, police were speaking to a man outside a licensed premises on Mulgoa Road in Penrith.

A woman then allegedly got into her vehicle and drove to police where she got out and approached them.

Police started to form an opinion about her sobriety and with further information provided by a security guard from the venue, they were able to breath test her.

She returned a positive reading and was taken back to Penrith Police Station where her breath analysis returned a mid-range reading.

She will face court later this month.

Man stabbed

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a man suffered stab wounds in St Marys early on Tuesday morning.

At about 8.50am on Tuesday, February 9, emergency services were called to a hotel on Queen Street, following reports a man had suffered stab wounds inside the premises.

Ambulance Paramedics treated the injured man, believed to be aged in his 20s, before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

As inquiries into the incident continue, any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers or St Marys Police.

Helping tackle mental health issues New clinics at Werrington to provide free psychology sessions DALE DRINKWATER

ree psychology sessions are coming to Werrington, through the Western Sydney University’s brand new state of the art psychology clinics.

The new training and research clinics were launched on Wednesday, and for the first year, will offer free services for common psychological problems in children and adults.

Director of Psychology Clinics, Professor Craig Gonsalvez, said the clinic will open its doors to locals who may otherwise struggle to afford psychology services.

“One in five Australians will suffer a mental health disorder in a one year period, and only one in three people are reported to seek treatment from a mental health qualified professional,” he said.

“We plan to provide what we would call affordable psychological services as they can be quite expensive in the community.

This year they will be free, and from next year they will need to pay a small fee but very minimal.”

Under the guidance of fully trained supervisors, masters’ level clinical psychology trainees will see between 25 to 30 clients a day in addition to four group sessions.

Professor Gonsalvez said unlike the University’s old clinic in Narellan, they have a new vision for the clinics to include both training and research facili-

ties, and plan to open an eating disorders and obesity clinic in the facility.

Mayor Karen McKeown attended the launch of the clinics that she said will relieve a lot of stress for Penrith locals.

“It’s going to be an absolute gem for the area because mental health issues are so prevalent now,” she said.

“Any services we can get for the area, especially free of charge is wonderful.”

Odd phobias can ruin lives Western Sydney University’s new psychology clinic will treat a range of common psychological problems, including phobias.

While some of the phobias can be surprising, Director of Psychology Clinics, Professor Craig Gonsalvez, said they are very common and impact significantly on people’s everyday lives.

“It’s common to have some fear of bad things but it has to reach above and beyond a certain level (to be a phobia), it has to be severe, and be accompanied by some conditions like trembling and heart rate,” he said.

He said the most common phobias are speaking in public, social phobia, a fear of panic attacks and Agoraphobia, which is a fear of leaving a safe place and going to a crowded open space.

“A fear of panic attacks, a lot people with that don’t leave their houses,” he said.

“Another common phobia is Zoophobia, a fear of animals or a fear of catastrophic events.”

With hundreds of different types of phobias come some very interesting ones.

Allodoxaphobia is a fear of opinions, and Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth.

Decidophobia is the fear of making decisions and Hypengyophobia is the fear of responsibility.

Acerophobia is a fear of sourness while Ambulophobia is a fear of walking.

Anglophobia is a fear of England or English culture.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT COMPILED BY DALE DRINKWATER

Council has supported the subdivision of the St Marys ADI site into five lots for Regional Parks, the Central Precinct development of Jordan Springs, and residue allotments.

Lots one and two of a combined 433 hectares separated by an access road joining Jordan Springs and the Central Precinct, will be dedicated to Regional Park. Lot three of 302 hectares is the Central Precinct, and lots four and five are residue for potential alternative drainage options to the large drainage basins located in the middle of the Regional Park.

The approved proposal is for a paper subdivision only, and does not bind the delivery of fencing within and around the Regional Park.

Two of three projects submitted to the Federal Government’s 20 million trees program have secured funding.

As a result, 99,000 trees and shrubs will be planted at two sites at South Penrith and Emu Plains. However in a meeting on Monday night, Councillor Kevin Crameri said he is sceptical when the Government makes promises like this. “There are millions of trees being cleared, it seems hypocritical that we can allow so much natural bush land to be developed on,” he said.

The oval at Lord Sheffield Circuit in Thornton has been named the Ron Mulock Oval. Ron Mulock contributed immensely to the community and was a staunch Penrith Panthers supporter. Councillor John Thain said as well as being an icon in Penrith, Ron Mulock was also a great cricketer.

“I think it’s a great thing that Ron will be remembered this way,” he said.

Council has given consent for Kentucky Fried Chicken at St Clair to extend their trading hours. Currently, the fast food restaurant opens from 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday, and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights. The application’s Statement of Environmental Effects from October 1, 2015, states hours will be extended to open from 10am to 2am every day.

Bonnie’s Great challenge

enrith local Bonnie Flitcroft is hoping to achieve the impossible when she takes part in the NordoffRobbins Great Wall of China Challenge this May. The 21-year-old took on the fundraising challenge when she saw how much the music therapy program helped her 10-year-old Autistic brother, Noah.

“It’s amazing how much he has learnt through the program that NordoffRobbins offers,” Ms Flitcroft said.

“It looks like he is being silly when he is doing the program, but he remembers all of it and it has carried over to school as he is able to remember his work much easier than he used to.”

Ms Flitcroft has so far raised over $3000 towards the program and has no plans of stopping yet.

“The community support has been amazing and I’m super proud that I have come this far,” she said.

Although some might think it’s a big challenge, Ms Flitcroft says she’s scared but prepared to push herself.

“I’ve been training and I definitely think it will push my fitness limits, but I’m ready for it,” she said.

“I know I’ll come out the other side of it with my life changed forever.”

Ms Flitcroft fundraises at Krispy Kreme in Penrith every second Sunday of the month in conjunction with the ‘Cars and Donuts’ show, with the next event being held this Sunday, February 14.

Better equipped to battle fires in our region Mulgoa benefits from new funding

Mulgoa has received a share of almost $810,000 of Rural Fire Service (RFS) funding to be put towards bushfire protection for the community.

The RFS team will receive a new fire truck and renovated training rooms as a result of the funding. The local investment is part of a wider $314.6 million allocated to the Rural Firefighting Fund in the NSW Government’s 2015/16 budget.

MP for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, said the investment is critical to local RFS firefighters and will play an important role in keeping residents safe, especially during the bushfire season.

“The devastating effects of bushfires are never far from our minds, particularly in the summer,” she said.

“It’s great to see that local RFS brigades will benefit from this funding and support their efforts in keeping our community safe.”

The new facilities will allow volunteers to continue to be supported with the latest technology and equipment.

“We will also continue to work with councils to develop local projects throughout the Cumberland area,” Mrs Davies said.

f you have employees, you are probably aware that finding the right ones for your business is vital. You need people who have a great work ethic and skills to do the tasks, but who also understand your vision and fit the culture of your workplace.

Generally, finding people with the right skill set isn’t too hard (unless you are in a very niche market!). And if you have been through the recruiting process over the past few years, you have probably also found that you are not short of applicants who are good workers, committed to working the hours you set and the tasks involved.

But how do you find employees who ‘fit’ your business? That is, how do you ensure that the people you employee are going to work well with you and any other employees? How do you find people who have passion for your vision and are willing to go the extra mile?

How do you know they will be loyal and committed to what you are trying to achieve?

Short answer: there is no formula for guaranteeing recruitment success.

Unless you have an enormous amount of time, resources and finances to implement a lengthy recruitment process to help you really get to know a potential employee, to a large extent, you are taking a gamble on anyone you employ.

That is not to say that there are not a range of strategies you can use to get the best results possible, including: • scenario based questions in your interviews (ask: how would you deal with this situation?)

• informal conversations that allow potential employees to share ‘who’ they are • trial shifts or casual hours to ‘test the waters’ Ultimately, a great deal of recruitment success comes down to immeasurable factors. One person may look great ‘on paper’, but another may just have that ‘X’ factor you are looking for.

Oftentimes, listening to your gut feelings and general impressions of someone can be just as, if not more, important than an impressive list of credentials.

I often use the quote, “If you knew how powerful your thoughts were, you would never think a negative thought”.

It is so true.

Too many people focus on the negative constantly instead of focusing on what they can control. Seeing the glass as half full is a known trait amongst successful people.

The endless research is there for us all to learn from. Here is some findings of mine on some of the things successful people do: Focusing on what matters – There are only 24 hours in a day, but of those hours, where are you spending your time? Successful people know what has to happen day in and day out. It’s getting the necessary work done before watching viral YouTube videos.

Make their own luck – Putting yourself in the right place takes effort. Don’t hold yourself back by waiting for the perfect timing or idea. Some of the most successful people got there by hitting the ground

running, even if timing wasn’t perfect.

Having an optimistic outlook – When you think positively, you have a better possibility of being successful. Negative thoughts just destroy your mind and everything that you work on.

Be different – it takes being unconventional and risks to get the result that you desire. If things that used to work aren’t now, then it’s time to think differently.

They follow through – Successful people always follow through. If you say that you are going to do something, do it.

Believe in themselves – If you think you can, then it is possible. It all starts with believing in yourself.

Learn from failures – Whether something worked or not, you must analyse the situation afterwards. Successful people always step back from projects, look at the results and learn from their failures so it does not happen again.

Remain humble – Success doesn’t have to come with an ego. In fact, many successful people don’t have one. Never forget to hold yourself accountable for every aspect of your life. This is how you’ll remain focused and humble.

H

undreds of walkers and cyclists every week race over the impressive sandstone viaduct above Knapsack Gully.

With eight enormous arches, the viaduct still stands tall as a stunning representation of the difficultly to link rail over the steep mountains to the west.

Built in masonry, construction finished around 1865 and the viaduct formed a key component of the Little Zig Zag railway that crept up the side of the mountain and joined Emu Plains to Glenbrook.

At the time the engineer, John Whitton, preferred to have built a tunnel through the mountain, but with limited funds, decided on the switch-back single rail line.

In three legs, the zig zag railway required a train to reverse up or down one of them in gradients as steep as one in 30 to one in 33.

The line was relatively issue free, until 1886 when a train descending on the steep track lost control and injured 15 people.

However, the most disastrous accident occurred at Emu Plains in 1878 when east and westbound trains fatally collided.

Newspaper reports at the time said the accident could not be described.

“Judging from the tremendous force with which the engines came together, both trains must have been running at full speed,” the report said.

“By this terrible disaster three men have been killed, and two or three more are so injured that they are not expected to live.”

By 1913 when the second Glenbrook Deviation with a more gentle gradient was built, the viaduct fell into disuse.

The viaduct was turned into a road, then in 1993 closed to traffic and was used for tourist access to appreciate the beauty of the Knapsack Gully.

It stands today as a great monument of the region’s past.

Remember when...

Even in the 1940s, the Nepean River was a popular place, enticing locals and tourists to come from near and far. This photo of Leonard Tremain and one of the two ferries he used for his Nepean Pleasure Cruises, was taken in front of the once popular Log Cabin.

Our February 13, 2015 edition of the Weekender recounts a serious accident, and an ongoing environmental issue of water quality.

On the front page, four people, including two children, amazingly walked away from the scene when the car they were travelling in crashed into a home in South Penrith.

The house received extensive damage and it was extremely lucky a female occupant was in a back room at the time of the incident.

Inside the paper, we took a look at the water quality of South Creek after that fateful factory fire in St Marys, which caused bio-diesel to leak into the catchment.

The creek, that was once the lifeblood of the fishing community, was killing scores of fish and putting locals at risk.

At least 50 fish were found dead after the fire just a month before, and local fisherman Dale Ward was extremely upset.

“I think people need to realise how important this creek is,” he said.

“After all it is one of Sydney’s biggest floodplains. It needs to be cleaned up and rectified so it doesn’t happen again.”

Tests by Penrith Council indicated that contamination had ceased.

David bares his tech views KATE REID

W

ith a gift for chara c t e r creation and story telling, Dav id Strassman could have chosen any art form through which to channel his skills.

But ventriloquism was the one he fell into during his time studying acting in New York in the 70s.

From those early days busking with his foul-mouthed – and slightly evil – sidekick Chuck, Strassman has become one of the biggest names in ventriloquism, helping to revamp and reinvigorate a once tired art.

Over the years Strassman has added to his arsenal a host of complex characters that have taken on a life of their own.

Included in this group is much-loved crowd favourite: the very cute, and sometimes shy, Ted E Bare.

“He’s fully fleshed out with dreams, hopes, foibles, conflicts and wishes,” Strassman said about his long time onstage companion.

“And that’s what makes these characters so real. They have so many years of being ‘alive’ that when I perform them that bleeds through.”

The realness of Strassman’s characters – which now include Ted E Bare, Kevin the Alien, Chuck Wood, Grandpa Fred, Sid Beaverman and the first female character, Angel – will be on display in Strassman’s hilarious new show ‘iTedE’, which will be heading to the Evan Theatre inside Panthers on Friday, March 4.

The show will explore the subject of

technology, both through its content and its puppetry. ‘iTedE’ will include a mock Ted talk style discussion panel where five of his puppets will appear on stage at the one time, all voiced live by Strassman but operated solely by robotics.

“This new show I’m doing is mind blowing, I am breaking all the laws of puppet physics,” Strassman said.

During the show the comedian and his sidekicks will explore the impacts that technology is having on our lives, helping to hold a (hilarious) mirror to the funny side of our online habits.

“It’s basically about the fact that we are all addicted to our screens, checking Facebook, YouTube and Instagram,” he said.

“Thus technology is starting to do the thinking for us, we’re not using our imaginations.

ing anymore, they’re all looking at their screens.”

This use of technological advancement to present a comedy show about the potential pitfalls of technology perfectly encapsulates Strassman’s views on the subject.

“I’m a techno geek, so generally I love technology and I believe technology will save the planet,” he said.

“What my thesis in my show is, is that too much technology can be harmful or damaging or cause you to be indifferent.

“I think technology will save us, but I think there’s a road we have to travel to get there first.”

he Necks are turning 30! And as part of the celebrations the acclaimed Australian experimental jazz band will be heading to the Blue Mountains for the first time this month for a concert at the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood.

Rated M // KATE REID Critically acclaimed film ‘The Martian’ is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray. The story revolves around a group of astronauts on a manned Mars mission.

After being hit by a fierce storm the crew leave their teammate, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), behind thinking he has been killed during the storm.

Little do they know that Watney has survived and now must find a way to survive on this hostile planet.

Using the few supplies he has, plus his ingenuity, spirit and wit, Watney must find a way to get a message to Earth to let them know he is still alive.

Once he makes contact with NASA, the organisation and his crewmates

scramble to rescue the stranded astronaut before he runs out of resources.

The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name and was directed by iconic filmmaker Ridley Scott.

The sci-fi hit caused a bit of confusion amongst film lovers when it was nominated in the ‘Musical or Comedy’ category at the Golden Globes, a nomination which ultimately led to a win for the critically acclaimed film.

Damon also took home a Golden Globe for his role as Mark Watney.

Poor Tyra hasn’t had much luck lately, she was being boarded at a vet clinic by her family and they never came back for her.

Since September she has been living in a kennel, so she would love to find a kind, caring home where she can spend the rest of her life getting the love she truly deserves.

Meet Loco! Loco was abandoned at his owners grandmothers house and being an elderly lady she could not handle a 14 month old kelpie x on her own. Loco is a very happy and gentle boy that is full of energy so will need an active home environment. His previous owner did say that he can jump fences but that could be due to being left on his own. He has lived with another dog previously, we always recommend a meet and greet with all new dogs though.

Chorizo and spinach pasta bake

e read and hear plenty about Coonawarra, that small but extraordinary strip of vineyard country in South Australia that comprises limestone and terra rossa (red soil) layered over a deep, one-million-year-old sandstone ridge, and on which are produced some of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

But what few know is that in the south of the region, that ancient ridge rises from the depths, and where it emerges on just one vineyard in all of Coonawarra, results in a Cabernet Sauvignon that truly is incredibly unique.

That vineyard is owned by Rymill Coonawarra, and Winemaker Sandrine Gimon says of the company’s recently-released 2013 Sandstone Cabernet Sauvignon that it is so distinctively different, “it has made me fall in love with Cabernet all over again”.

Created from low yielding, highly flavoured fruit so typical of Coonawarra, this is everything the Cab Sauv devotee could wish for, with a palate of lively fresh berry flavours with hints of liquorice, cocoa and black olives all rolled into one.

Wonderfully elegant and refined, it’s worth the $60 price tag with a family or friends’ Sunday slow-roasted lamb lunch or dinner.

One to note: Good news for bubbly buffs who don’t like having to wait for some special occasion or event to pop the cork, Mistletoe Wines in the Hunter Valley have released a Sparkling Mozcato for virtually anytime enjoyment – because it has less than half the normal alcohol strength at just 5.8%. It has lovely crisp and fizzy tropical fruit flavours on the palate.

Ingredients • 400g spiral pasta • 250g Spanish chorizo, sliced • 500g Basil pesto • ½ cup of cream • 2/3 cup Pizza Blend Cheese • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs • 100g baby rocket leaves • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil Preparation 1. Cook pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water according to packet directions. Drain and return to pot.

2. Meanwhile, cook chorizo in a frying pan on high for 2-3 mins, until browned. Add to pasta, pesto and cream.

Transfer to a 10-cup capacity ovenproof dish. Combine cheese and breadcrumbs. Scatter over pasta.

3. Transfer pasta bake to a preheated grill. Cook for five mins, until melted and golden. Toss together rocket and oil. Serve pasta bake with rocket leaves.

Symptoms of dry drowning usually happen straight after any incident in the water.

In secondary drowning (also called delayed drowning) the child’s airways open up, letting water into his lungs, but not enough to disable breathing right away. Instead, it sits there and inhibits the lungs’ ability to oxygenate blood, causing more and more trou-

ble breathing over the course of several hours. Symptoms of secondary drowning generally start within 1-24 hours of the incident.

Whilst both events are very scary, it is important to remember that they are also rare, making up only one per cent to two per cent of all drowning incidents. The key is to always practice good water safety, to remain vigilant after your child leaves the water, and know the signs of dry and secondary drowning. The symptoms of both conditions include coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing, vomiting, blue lips or pale skin and feeling extremely tired.

Your child may also display changes in behaviour such as such as irritability or a drop in energy levels, which could mean the brain isn’t getting enough oxygen.

If your child has any symptoms of dry drowning and secondary drowning after being in water, seek medical help right away at your local hospital’s emergency ward.

frequent, positive social experiences during these months to prevent antisocial behaviour, fear and aggression. Even after four months of age, continued exposure to a variety of people and other animals is important in maintaining good social skills.

Puppies need to meet as many new people as possible in a wide variety of situations. This being said, it is

important not to overwhelm them or have a negative experience. Start with calm introductions to one or two people at a time. If your puppy handles this well then increase the number of people, noise level and activity level. It is a good idea to have new people to give your puppy a small treat as this will teach the puppy that new and strange people, with an outstretched hand are a positive thing.

Once a puppy has learnt the sit command, have each new friend ask your puppy to sit before giving a treat. This also teaches a proper greeting and makes the puppy less likely to jump on people. It is important that a young pup has opportunities to learn about children; they often act and behave differently to adults and dogs often see them as a different species. People running, riding bikes, roller skating and riding scooters seem very different to young puppies. So learning that these things are not scary is important.

Take your puppy to visit friend’s homes to interact with their pets and family.

Ideal friends to visit are those with calm pets and calm children. Sometimes people are told to keep their puppy home until all of the immunisations are complete.

ith the race for the Premier’s Plate heating up more than ever, there will be no love lost this Valentine’s Day when the Western Sydney Wanderers do battle against the Wellington Phoenix at Pirtek Stadium.

The Wanderers are currently sitting on equal competition points (30) with the Brisbane Roar and a win this Sunday over the lowly Phoenix could earn them some much needed breathing space heading into a tough upcoming run.

Last Saturday the Wanderers were lucky

to escape with a point after a controversial meeting with Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium.

While Wanderers fans didn’t do themselves any favours in the stands, the match also got quite heated on the field with contested decisions and fiery tempers leading to a small melee and a red card to Western Sydney’s Alberto.

Combined with Dimas’ fifth yellow card of the season, it will mean the Wanderers will go into this weekend’s match against the Phoenix without two of their three Spanish imports.

But despite all the dramas on and off the field, the star for Western Sydney was recently re-signed super sub Brendon

Santalab, who once again came to the Wanderers’ rescue with a sensational 89th minute equaliser.

Speaking after the match, a relieved Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said it was a positive outcome to a difficult match.

“I think it was pretty clear to see that we pretty much controlled the whole match, which is pleasing because it isn’t easy to come here,” he said.

“In the end, we didn’t get the win, we got a point, they are a fantastic side, fantastic club and to perform that way can only give us confidence moving forward.”

The Wanderers will hope last weekend’s tight battle against the reigning champions will do them the world of good head-

ing into a tough stretch which includes arch rivals Sydney FC next weekend.

Despite just seven points separating first from sixth with nine rounds remaining, coach Popovic isn’t too concerned about the top six log jam.

“We can only control what we do, we’ve won two consecutive games and we just earned a very well-deserved point against the champions away from home – the rest of the teams are irrelevant, really,” he said.

“We just need to keep improving, keep getting better, keep getting points and then we’ll finish where we deserve to be.”

The Wanderers take on Wellington at 5pm this Sunday, February 14 at Pirtek Stadium.

he junior rugby league club of new Panthers captain Matt Moylan will this season enjoy the benefits of new upgrades to Peppertree Park sporting ground.

Peppertree Park is the home of the St Clair Comets, which recently received $30,000 in funding from the NSW Government.

The much needed funds have allowed the Comets to purchase sandstone blocks, which have been strategically placed on the outer edges of each of the fields, in response to issues caused by heavy rain.

“Due to the funding provided by this Government, Peppertree Park will now have improved drainage to prevent flooding and the erosion of the ground and soil, ensuring that players are protected, especially when dashing down the sidelines,” Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said.

Netball comp off to a streaming start Premier League matches to be streamed live thanks to historic partnership NATHAN TAYLOR

ocal netball fans will be able to watch the future of the sport live from their homes with the announcement that the new Netball NSW Premier League (NNSWPL) competition will be streamed live and free during its inaugural season.

The NNSWPL, which will be played out of Netball Central at Sydney Olympic Park on Wednesday evenings from mid-April, is a new competition to attract the best current and emerging talent within NSW. Its purpose is to offer a local, elite platform for players, coaches, officials and administrators, and provide bridging opportunities into the Australian Netball League and subsequent ANZ Championship.

Netball NSW General Manager of Commercial and Corporate Partnerships, Tristan Prosser-Shaw said the innovation was a preeminent moment for netball in NSW. “There is a lot of excitement surrounding the Netball NSW Premier League and looking at the player rosters of the eight licensees, fans of netball are in for a real treat,” he said.

believes will be very popular from his vast experience in delivering sport to a global audience via live streaming.

“We can’t wait to work alongside Netball NSW to showcase what we believe will be a fantastic competition,” Mason said.

“This will be a multi-camera operation which will deliver a high quality experience for the viewer and we are really looking forward to Round 1.”

In addition to the weekly live streaming service, BarTV Sports will produce a range of NNSWPL content including match highlights and interviews which will be available on Netball NSW digital and social media channels.

The announcement is great news for local netball fans who will be able to watch the Panthers Premier League team in action.

Made up of 13 players from the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury Netball Associations, the Panthers Opens team will be lead by St Clair junior and current Australian Diamond Paige Hadley and coached by Netball NSW Hall of Famer Lisa Beehag.

The NNSWPL will be contested across two Divisions – Opens and Under 20s – with a pre-season tournament set to commence on March 2.

ew Panthers captain Matt Moylan is set to make his longawaited return from injury this Saturday night when Penrith take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in the first of two trials at Pepper Stadium.

The 24-year-old, who was named captain last month, will hit the field for the first time since tearing ligaments in his ankle last May. The Panthers have named a strong side made up of NRL stars and fringe first graders, but will be without the services of new recruit Trent Merrin, Jamie Soward, Tyrone Peachey and Leilani Latu who are in Brisbane this weekend for the Indigenous versus World All Stars match.

The Panthers kicked off the rugby league season last weekend abroad with matches in New Zealand at the Auckland Nines and a NSW Cup trial in Papua New Guinea.

In Auckland, the Panthers sent over a strong side made up of youth and experience but failed to deliver, bowing out in the pool stage after just one win.

In the weekend’s other match, Penrith played an historic trial game in Papua New Guinea against Queensland Cup side the SP Hunters.

In front of a sold out National Football Stadium in Port Moresby, the match was a real battle for the Panthers, who were

lead by Jamie Soward in the halves and featured a number of new recruits, young guns and NSW Cup players.

Penrith centre Malakai WateneZelezniak scored a double in the 20-12 win while former Gold Coast Suns AFL player Josh Hall bagged a try as did Indigenous All Star Leilani Latu.

Penrith will hope to continue their good start to the trial season when they battle the Bulldogs at Pepper Stadium this Saturday, February 13 at 6pm.

“I was nervous today, I didn’t react when I needed to, I just froze,” she said.

Fox knows where her focus needs to be in the coming months.

“I think I’ll just keep working on the technical side of things, because I’ve done all the physical work,” she said.

“It’s about staying fresh now because we only have two weeks until Oceanias.”

However it wasn’t all doom and gloom for Fox last weekend with the Leonay resident coming away with gold in the C1 final.

Fox recorded a time of 109.27 to finish 1.93 seconds ahead of fellow Aussies Rosalyn Lawrence and Alison Borrows.

Fox was pleased with the way she paddled last Sunday with her C1 time in the final faster than her K1 run the previous day.

“Yesterday didn’t go to plan as I didn’t make the final and I was really looking to do that, so today I wanted to paddle freely and put down runs that I was capable of,” she said after the event.

Fox will now turn her attention to the K1 and preparing for the final selection event, the Oceania Championships, in Penrith next weekend.

Meanwhile, fellow Penrith local Ian Burrows finished 12th in the men’s C1 semi and failed to make the final.

Like Fox, he did, however, have the security of winning the first Olympic selection race, which is positive news for the star athlete.

CRICKET: Penrith are set to chase down a big total when Round 12 of the Sydney Grade Competition continues this Saturday at Howell Oval.

Penrith lost the toss on Day 1 which saw Hawkesbury bat first. The visitors managed an impressive 8/225 before stumps ended play.

Young gun Jake Wholohan was the best with ball for Penrith with 3/46.

Penrith will be hoping to dismiss Hawkesbury early and chase down their final total when Day 2 of action gets underway at 10.30am this Saturday.

CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club have failed to reach the final of the First Grade Limited Overs competition, going down to Bankstown by seven wickets.

Played at Bankstown Memorial Oval last Sunday, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors managed a disappointing 118 before being dismissed.

It took Bankstown just 28.2 overs to reach Penrith’s total and book their place in next month’s final against St George.

BASEBALL: Penrith finally played their first game of Sunday baseball in weeks and they didn’t disappoint, smashing Cronulla 15-1 in Round 17 of the NSW State Baseball competition.

The Panthers will hope to continue their winning streak into the

finals when they do battle against Baulkham Hills in the competition’s final round next weekend.

BASKETBALL: Four players from the Penrith Basketball Association have been chosen to represent NSW at the upcoming Australian U18 Championships in Adelaide this April.

Josh Kalwy and Kevin Achampong were selected for the metropolitan men’s team while Lachlan Charlton was selected as a reserve player.

Natalia Beaumont and Tylah Mundine were selected for the metropolitan women’s team while Binta Salawu was selected as a reserve player.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers proved that last week’s 8-0 win over Marconi was no fluke when they defeated the Mt Druitt Town Rangers last Thursday night.

The 4-0 win means the Wanderers have two victories in their two NPL pre-season matches so far after Lachlan Roberts, Lachlan Scott, Brenton Fox and Mathieu Cordier all scored goals.

Next up for the Wanderers’ NPL team is the Macarthur Rams at 7.30pm tonight, February 11 at Lynwood Park.

essica Fox’s Rio Olympics hopes have taken a slight hit after she failed to reach the K1 final at the Australian Canoe Slalom Championships at Penrith last weekend.

Competing on her home course, the 21-yearold finished 13th in the semi, which wasn’t high enough to qualify the former World Champion for the final.

“I was a bit disappointed with my racing today,” Fox said.

“I had some trouble on gates 17 and 18 and that put me out a bit.

“It was not my best racing and it was really a fight to the finish. I was obviously relieved and happy to get that first selection win, but I would have loved to have made that final.”

Fox was forced to watch on while Austria’s Corinna Kuhnle won the K1 gold, with Germany’s Ricarda Funk taking silver and the Czech Republic’s Veronika Vojtova winning the bronze.

Fox admitted she took risks she didn’t need to take but said the course didn’t behave the way she thought it would.
