here’s been an explosive development in the indecent assault case against a former St Marys school teacher with revelations that another possible victim has come forward.

49-year-old Matthew Brunel George Thomas is alleged to have committed seven counts of ‘aggravated assault of a person under 16’ and two counts of ‘incite act of indecency’ against three female students, two aged 11 and one aged nine.

It comes after he was charged in May last year with three counts of indecent assault of a student, 12, which resulted in his suspension from duty.

Now the Crown prosecutor has flagged the possibility of a fifth victim.

It is understood the alleged victim was interviewed by police recently and there is the possibility of further charges being laid against Mr Thomas.

The prosecution will claim the crimes were committed between the end of 2015 and mid-2016. The school where Mr Thomas worked cannot be named.

In court last week, the defence and prosecution also confirmed negotiations between the parties had broken down, meaning the accused will likely stand trial for the alleged crimes later this year.

Mr Thomas is pleading not guilty to all charges.

war of words broke out at Penrith Council’s Policy Review meeting on Monday night between Liberal Councillor Bernard Bratusa and Independent Councillor Kevin Crameri.

Cr Crameri has blasted his fellow Councillors for “not caring” and “lacking interest” in his presentation on noxious weeds.

Cr Bratusa told Cr Crameri, who he was sitting next to at the February 13 meeting, that he was fed up with being accused of not caring about the Penrith community.

“I have to say I’m always offended by Cr Crameri when he assumes that we [Councillors] do not care about our community,” Cr Bratusa said.

“Every Councillor here is proud to represent this community and I’m just constantly offended by his opinion of us.”

Cr Bratusa was responding to Cr Crameri’s presentation about the management of noxious weeds on road sides and traffic islands, based on a report presented

by Council.

Cr Crameri said numerous times during his presentation, “but it seems people here will stick their heads in the sand like ostriches and not do anything”, referring

to the lack of engagement on his presentation by his fellow Councillors.

“Council officers should be looking at this and should see what’s going on with the management of the weeds,” Cr Crameri told the Weekender.

“Councillors should be up to scratch on these issues or take note from someone who knows something.

“If he (Cr Bratusa) is offended by me saying they don’t care, I don’t care. I’m there to protect the people of this community and the environment.”

Cr Crameri was becoming visibility frustrated as his presentation wore on on Monday night.

“I brought in the weeds I was talking about to show everyone... I was showing them photos on the slides,” he said.

“But they kept interrupting me or talking during my presentation – they don’t know what I’m talking about and they’re not interested in learning it.”

A report will come back to Council at a future meeting.

“I’m disappointed that they weren’t paying attention and that’s why I stopped talking,” Cr Crameri said.

“It’s going to come back to another meeting though and hopefully in the future what I’m saying will come to fruition.”

any of you grew up in a Penrith vastly different to the one we see today and the one that will exist in the future.

But no matter what era of this great city you remember most fondly, one thing has always remained constant – the pride we have in living here.

Another constant is our divided view on growth and change.

On one hand, plenty of people wish for Penrith to retain its ‘country’ feel and have a disdain for apartments, population growth and our desire to be a city that can compete with economic powerhouses such as Parramatta.

On the other hand, plenty demand jobs close to home, better infrastructure and a lifestyle akin to that of a big city, with a touch of regional feel.

The latter is winning out.

Penrith is in an extraordinary growth phase, with its population to explode in coming years and the infrastructure to match it also in the pipeline.

But as residents, we need to expect that it comes with a cost.

We complain about a lack of parking in the Penrith CBD, yet we’ll also complain if a multi-deck car park opens and has fees attached, or if parking meters are eventually implemented.

The truth is that a city like the one Penrith is becoming simply can’t cater for you to drive up to a store on High Street you want to visit and park for free for a few hours.

It’s simply not sustainable.

And when it comes to bigger projects, like the upgraded M4 and WestConnex, we also need to accept that we’ll most likely by paying a toll.

And we’ll pay that toll because the trip from Penrith to the city or other parts of Sydney will be faster, easier and more efficient.

I find the current Labor campaign against the new tolls quite amusing given this is the same party that back in 1995 promised to remove the M4 and M5 tolls, but later backtracked and introduced a confusing and difficult ‘cash back’ system instead.

More than 20 years after Bob Carr’s big election promise, the M5 toll is still there and it took 15 years for the M4 toll booths to be confined to history.

At the end of the day, there will be a toll free way to reach your destination even when the M4 upgrade and WestConnex is finished. But if you want to take the quickest route, you’ll need to pay for it.

We need to accept that, like most big cities around the world, driving from A to B doesn’t come cheap.

And then we come to the new airport at Badgerys Creek and the ongoing debate surrounding not only its operation, but its very existence.

Quite rightly Lindsay MP Emma Husar is standing up for the local community and demanding that the airport operate under certain restrictions and conditions, so it does not adversely impact residents to any major extreme.

I completely agree with the argument that if a 24/7 airport isn’t a right fit for Kingsford Smith, it can’t be a right fit for Badgerys Creek.

But the airport itself should and will be built.

Western Sydney is the logical place for such a major piece of infrastructure, that will be a game changer in terms of the local economy and jobs closer to home.

Penrith may well be a different city to the one I grew up in, but it’s hard not to be excited about what the opportunities of today will deliver to the generations that will call Penrith home tomorrow.

The quicker we embrace and accept the growth, the better it will be for all of us.

Penrith is on the up. You can either join the ride, or become a professional whinger stuck in a bygone era.

The pride you have in living here can still exist no matter how much changes; but it now extends to being proud of the city Penrith is poised to become.

And another thing...

Today the Weekender farewells one of our longest serving staff members in the shape of James Miller.

James has been involved in the print media world here in Penrith for the past 30 years, most of that time spent with the Weekender’s real estate section.

James will be sorely missed and we thank him for the enormous contribution he’s made to the paper over many years.

p to 55,000 local jobs will be created by 2031, thanks to the Economic Development Strategy presented by Penrith Council this week.

The Economic Development Strategy, endorsed by Council at the end of 2016 and unveiled at a Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce event this week, details key industry sectors that will be targeted.

With the aim of growing jobs closer to home, over 12,500 jobs will be created in the health sector, 9,500 in education, 5,000 in arts and culture, 3,500 in advanced manufacturing, 2,000 in tourism, and 2,000 in advanced logistics.

These figures will be complemented by growth in service activity in the night-time economy, small business and residential services to create between 42,000 and 55,000 new jobs.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said it’s a great thing to have new jobs created in the region.

“This strategic framework shows how we can best support economic development, foster greater investment and ensure there are more jobs close to home for our residents,” Cr Thain said.

young mother and her baby have locked themselves in a bedroom in an attempt to protect themselves from her ex-partner.

Police attended a residence at Jamisontown on Friday, February 10, following an aggravated break and enter.

Shortly before 1.15am, it is understood that the 18-year-old victim and her young daughter were inside a residence at Regentville Road with another male family member.

It is then alleged that the woman’s ex-partner has smashed the common entry glass door to the complex of units at the residence.

Fearing for her safety, the woman then

hid in the bedroom with her baby and locked the door.

The male ex-partner then climbed onto the unit’s balcony in an attempt to gain entry to the residence, where he was unsuccessful.

He then made his was to the front door where he was able to force entry by kicking open the door.

However, the male then fled when he came across the victim’s relative in the unit.

The perpetrator, a 21-year-old South Penrith man, handed himself in to Penrith Police a short time later.

He was charged with ‘aggravated break and enter with intent knowing person there’, and was refused bail.

He will appear in Penrith Local Court on March 17.

Six cats have been rescued from a unit fire in Kingswood.

About 9.45pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to a block of units on Santley Crescent, following reports of a fire.

Officers from St Marys Local Area Command attended and evacuated residents.

Firefighters rescued a mother cat and five kittens from the fire.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Acknowledging historic apology Aboriginal woman recounts horrors of her childhood as Council brings community together JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith has marked the anniversary of the national apology to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a special family reunion taking place at Penrith City Council.

The apology was made nine years ago by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in relation to past laws, policies and practices which have impacted on Australia’s First Nations Peoples, and particularly members of the Stolen Generations.

On Monday, Council remembered the apology with a special commemoration at the Civic Centre.

The two guest speakers invited to help mark the occasion, Janice Kennedy and Peter Brown, met for the first time on Monday and realised they’re actually related – Ms Kennedy is Mr Brown’s aunty.

They described Monday’s event as a very emotional time.

“It’s an absolute pleasure and was unexpected,” Ms Kennedy said.

The 74-year-old, who is originally from Kempsey on the mid-north coast, was at the event to share her story.

“I was taken from my family at just 13-years-old,” she said.

“I was taken to an orphanage near Taree and was taken from my Aunty and sister.”

Ms Kennedy made several escapes over the years but the Aboriginal Protection Board continued to take her away.

From the late 1950s Ms Kennedy was taken to Sydney twice to work as a servant.

During her time away on the second occasion, both Ms Kennedy’s sister and Aunty died. She never saw them again.

“I met the man who became the father of my six children; he gave us a good life and was a hard working man until he died in 1988,” she said.

“I’m here today because of the strength of my family and support from them; I’m here because of my determination.”

Penrith Mayor John Thain said it’s extremely important to mark the anniversary with the commemoration event.

“The event presents an opportunity to acknowledge how far we have come in our journey since that historic day, and to discuss the issues we still face – both old and new,” he said.

“In the spirit of the apology made nine years ago, this event is a powerful reminder that our community’s future is shared between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

● Work continues this weekend to remove the two bridges over Station Street, as part of the project to remove the Allen Place ramp and elevated car park.

The removal, to take place over another two weekends (Saturday nights, Sundays and Sunday nights only), was scheduled to minimise disruption to businesses in the vicinity.

Station Street will be closed to traffic, from Henry Street and High Street from 9pm on Saturdays (18 and 25 February), through to 5am on Mondays (20 and 27 February).

The 10-week project to remove the Allen Place ramp and elevated car park is on schedule. The project is expected to be completed by Monday, 20 March 2017, weather permitting.

The ramps have been closed since March 2015, so it is a significant step forward to be able to remove them and the elevated car park.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and we thank the community for their cooperation.”

One hundred and twenty five years ago this game was a big draw card for Penrith with Lord Sheffield’s presence widely known in the sport of cricket. Recreating this game again brings a great sense of community like it did in 1892.

The extreme weather caused the cancellation of events right across Penrith and wider Sydney including most junior sports events. Cinema in the Park at St Marys was cancelled and the Nepean District Cricket Association called off all cricket matches for the weekend.

The temperature soared past the previous record of 46.5 degrees which was set in January 2013.

High temperatures on Friday meant the day started off warm on Saturday, but between 12pm and 2pm temperatures rose by almost 10 degrees and continued to rise steadily ahead of the record temperature being set at around 3.30pm.

Newlyweds Sarah and Mitch Priest had a day to remember, getting married in the sizzling summer sun at Mulgoa Valley Receptions.

The couple began to get anxious through the week when guests messaged them about the expected heat.

“I was worried about rain, I never imagined being worried about the heat,” Ms Priest said.

“I bought hand fans for when we got photos in the sun and my gorgeous mother bought an esky with frozen, cold towels to put around our necks to cool down.

“Despite the heat, everyone had an amazing attitude and didn’t complain at all.”

enrith Council continues to move the city forward with the opening of a new adult change facility in the

CBD. The widely supported idea came from Deputy Mayor of Penrith, Tricia Hitchen, who has an 18-year-old disabled son.

“I was out with the family one day and I needed to take my son home to change him,” Cr Hitchen told the Weekender.

“I thought it was ridiculous that I had to go all the way home – it was a light bulb moment for me when I thought of this idea.”

Unveiled on Wednesday, Cr Hitchen requested a Council proposal on the idea in an April 2016 meeting, which was met with unanimous support from her fellow Councillors.

The $80,000 unisex change rooms are located in the adjoining arcade to The Triangle Park in the Penrith CBD. “I’m so proud, it’s so personal for me because it affects my life but I’m so proud this Council thought it was important,” Cr Hitchen said.

“I’m just so happy that Council saw this as a priority.”

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the new change facilities will give a sense of freedom and dignity to people with disability and their carers.

“The adult change room allows people with disability to get out and about in Penrith and enjoy their time in the city knowing their toiletry and hygiene needs are catered for,” Cr Thain said.

Cr Thain said bathroom access and facilities can be a major social issue.

“The lack of appropriate toileting facilities is a fundamental barrier to social inclusion,” he said.

“Access to these facilities has the ability to transform the lives of people with disability by allowing them to go places.”

Phone applications, websites and disability organisations will all be updated with the information that the facility is there to use.

“Penrith Council really is one of the best accessibility Councils in NSW, it’s always a focus and was long before I was here,” Cr Hitchen said.

The new facilities in Penrith are now open and ready to be used.

Former St Marys teacher may face more charges

A former St Marys school teacher accused of indecently assaulting four students could be hit with fresh charges after the discovery of another possible victim.

Matthew Brunel George Thomas, 49, chose not to appear by video link when his matter was briefly mentioned before Penrith Local Court last Friday.

In a blow to the defence, the Crown prosecutor flagged the possibility of laying further charges, telling the court police had recently interviewed a potential fifth victim.

Thomas is alleged to have committed seven counts of ‘aggravated assault of a person under 16’ and two counts of ‘incite act of indecency’ against three female students, two aged 11 and one aged nine.

It comes after he was charged in May last year with three counts of indecent assault of a student, 12, which resulted in his suspension from duty.

The prosecution will claim the crimes were committed between the end of 2015 and mid-2016. The school where Thomas worked cannot be named for legal reasons.

During the mention, the defence and prosecution also confirmed negotiations between the parties had broken down, meaning the accused will likely stand trial for the alleged crimes later this year.

Thomas, who was bail refused in July 2016, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His matter was adjourned to March 17.

Truckie cops fine after kids found unrestrained in sleeper

A truck driver caught travelling with his three young children in the sleeper compartment of his rig has been slapped with a fine.

Lawrence Charles Rafalo fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with three counts of ‘unrestrained child’.

The court heard Mr Rafalo was en route to a truck show to raise money for charity

when his heavily pregnant wife, who was following behind with the children in a separate vehicle, fell unwell.

Determining they had come too far to turn back, Mr Rafalo loaded the car onto the empty truck and they continued on their way, placing the kids, aged 11, six and five in the sleeper compartment.

The defendant’s lawyer submitted his client didn’t intend to disobey the law, and asked that he only be penalised for one of the counts, given all charges related to the same period of offending.

Magistrate Stephen Corry agreed to show mercy, but only because the accused was left with very little option.

“I suppose in the circumstances you were left with little alternative, given the state of your wife,” he said, adding there was nothing to suggest they had not been properly restrained in the mother’s vehicle.

He was convicted and fined $325.

Man had “massive night” before crashing into parked car

A drunk driver who blew 0.133 after colliding with a parked car has been stripped of his licence for nine months.

Penrith Local Court heard Christopher Maric-Moore admitted to police he’d had a “massive night” following the car park bingle that saw him subsequently charged by police with mid-range drink driving.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told the 23-year-old it was “beyond him” why he didn’t catch a taxi or walk home, considering he was obviously struggling to operate the vehicle.

“You didn’t even make it out of the car park,” Magistrate Corry said.

“You’re fortunate you didn’t make it out onto the road and no one else was in the motor vehicle you collided with,” he added.

The court was told the forklift driver had tried to contact the owner of the car and was willing to pay for the damage.

He was convicted and fined $600.

Man who spat on prison officer’s face sent to jail

A man who assaulted a service station attendant and was caught “red handed” with prohibited drugs in custody has been sentenced to 12 months jail.

Simon Hayek appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link last Friday to be sentenced for the crimes, which also included assaulting a prison officer by spitting on his face.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said attacks on late night corner stores and service stations needed to be stamped out as the victims were at a “great disadvantage” – usually on their own performing a service to the community.

The court also heard Mr Hayek was caught “red handed” on CCTV accepting drugs contained in balloons from someone visiting him at Parklea Jail.

“Everyone knows drugs readily become available in a custodial environment – people who bring them in should expect to go in themselves,” Magistrate Clisdell said, adding it doesn’t matter if you are caught before they go into the general prison population.

He was equally scathing of the defendant’s attack on the prison officer, saying spitting was once considered “distasteful” but contamination that can occur as a result of bodily fluid to the face now made it more “egregious”.

He is eligible for release on parole on November 9.

Woman turned to shoplifting to buy clothes for work

A magistrate has blasted a shoplifter for using Kmart as her “personal clothier”, saying it shows she has scant regard for other people’s property.

Tonilee Davis had only been free for two months and was subject to parole when she stole clothing and makeup from the discount department store, because she had no appropriate clothing to wear to her seasonal job, selling ice creams at the SCG.

Ms Davis, who is now serving the balance of her parole, had her sentence extended by an additional three months after pleading guilty to ‘shoplifting’ and ‘goods in custody’ at Penrith Local Court last week.

Her Legal Aid lawyer said she now knows Centrelink offers payments for such circumstances, but Magistrate Stephen Corry slammed her failure to make inquires and instead turn to crime again.

“Instead of speaking to your parole officer, you decided Kmart is your own personal clothier,” he said.

She was convicted of ‘larceny’ and sentenced to seven months with a nonparole period of three, while she was handed a fixed-term of three months for the ‘goods in custody’ charge.

With time already served, she will be eligible for release on March 28.

Woman attacked partner with pool cue

A woman who attacked her partner with a pool cue, shattering the stick, has been ordered to undertake 80 hours of community service.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told Esma Sue Chatfield her now estranged partner could have been seriously injured during the clash, which her lawyer contended was the result of a “brain snap”.

However, Magistrate Corry said he had to assume the victim was not badly hurt, because he “didn’t want to interrupt his drinking to talk to (police)”.

He said he proposed to subject her to a penalty “one rung below going to jail”, and which allowed her to continue her counselling in the community.

Man regrets getting behind the wheel after being sent to prison

Anthony John Chaszczewski has been sent to the slammer after pleading guilty to ‘driving while disqualified’.

The 43-year-old fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he was sentenced to 15 months jail.

South Penrith: Man fired gun during domestic dispute

A 27-year-old South Penrith man was arrested after he fired a shotgun during a domestic dispute.

At about 6.30pm on Saturday, February 11 police attended Flavel Street, South Penrith following multiple calls from the public to 000.

It is alleged that during a domestic dispute the man damaged property and made threats to discharge his firearm.

Following additional threats, he discharged one round from a shotgun.

When police arrived at the location, a number of witnesses provided information to the police allowing them to arrest the man.

He was conveyed to Penrith Police Station and a number of firearms were seized from the residence for forensic examination.

The man was charged with five offences including ‘Fire firearm in a manner likely to injure persons/property’ and ‘Handle or use firearm under the influence of alcohol’.

An AVO was also applied for and served.

The man faced court on Tuesday, February 14.

Penrith: Man wears birthday suit on Mulgoa Road

Police attended Mulgoa Road, Penrith at 6.45pm on Saturday, February 11 following numerous calls from the public about a disturbing sight.

They came across a naked man wearing nothing but necklaces around his neck, standing on the pathway with one leg resting elevated on a fence.

Police spoke to the male, who was uncooperative and refused to provide any details, and then provided false particulars.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where his identity was confirmed.

The 33-year-old Cambridge Park male will front court in April.

St Marys: Man charged over crash that left 23-year-old hurt

The driver of a utility has been charged over a multi-vehicle crash at St Marys this week that trapped a 23-year-old Penrith man.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Glossop and Phillip streets at about 3.35pm on Monday, February 13.

Emergency services worked for some time to free the Penrith man, who was then taken to Westmead Hospital with a fractured left leg.

No other persons were injured.

The driver of the utility, a 22-year-old man from Surry Hills, was charged with ‘dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’, and ‘negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’.

St Marys: Teens busted after robbing pair on train

Two young males were robbed as they were on a train headed for St Marys at 1.00am on Sunday, February 12.

It is alleged the train had passed Doonside Railway Station when a 15-year-old Bidwill female and a 16-year-old Tregear male walked by the pair.

The youths returned to the males and told them they had a knife and demanded property.

One of the young males handed over his phone, and the two youths left.

Police were contacted and a short time later, the youths were located with the property and arrested.

Werrington: Drink driver caught after u-turn

A man who police pulled over for conducting an illegal u-turn in Werrington has been busted drink driving.

The 29-year-old Rooty Hill man returned a positive sample and was taken to Penrith Police Station where he returned a reading of 0.70.

He was then charged with a number of offences and will appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, March 16.

he five-year-old dog who was rescued from a house fire in South Penrith last December was temporarily reunited with his elderly owner during a special visit at Royal North Shore Hospital last week.

It was the first time Whiskey and his owner had seen each other since the blaze where they both suffered serious injuries.

St Marys firefighter Antony Crowe, who is currently fostering Whiskey, said the visit was very successful. “We had to go through the ICU entry process and put on the whole gown... they were very eager to get some sort of therapy going on,� Mr Crowe said. “We were there for probably 40 minutes and a lot of that time he was just whispering to the dog. “The family were very happy to see him, they were really supportive of it.�

Mr Crowe said he didn’t think twice about volunteering to take care of Whiskey while his owner recovers. “We did first aid on the dog and took him to the vet, and I kind of knew that if I didn’t take the dog, he was not going to make his way back to Gordon,� Mr Crowe said. “If it’s going to help an elderly man

With his owner just coming out of ICU, Whiskey is also recovering well from his injuries sustained that day. “He’s just a normal little dog,� Mr Crowe said. “We’ve got six acres so he has plenty of space to run around.�

Mr Crowe is thankful for the help of Nepean Veterinary Hospital for sorting out his vet bills which reached $15,000.

t’s time to slip on some gloves and get dirty as Community Junction Inc tackles Werrington Lakes for the National Clean Up Australia Day initiative on Tuesday, February 28.

Community Development Worker Nicole Devine said she put the call out on Facebook asking what areas needed some attention about a month ago.

“About 90 per cent of people said Werrington Lakes needed a good clean up,” she said.

“It’s little bits of litter from food. I’ve

been told that occasionally there is drug paraphernalia left over. Of course, being a kids and family area, we want to keep that out.”

Ms Devine is hoping for as many people as possible from the community to help out, with staff from Richardson and Wrench Werrington County and Jordan Springs volunteering.

Cambridge Park High School have also confirmed their involvement in the clean up efforts, and Ms Devine says the more the merrier.

Council

A highly intoxicated driver who smashed into a power pole will learn his fate next month after being told a full-time custodial sentence was his only option.

Magistrate Stephen Corry determined there was no way he could deal with Fouvale Asaua’s matter by way of suspended sentence, taking into account the aggravating features of the offence and more importantly, that it was the Samoan native’s third drink driving charge.

The court heard the 55-year-old, who pleaded guilty to high-range drink driving, had “drastically curtailed his drinking” following his mid-range drink driving conviction back in 2011.

But Magistrate Corry said some form of custodial sentence was inevitable due to the seriousness of the offence.

He will be sentenced on March 23.

Friendly exchange Penrith students aged between 15 and 19 will have the opportunity to travel to Penrith’s sister city Fujieda and live with a Japanese family for three weeks in September and October 2017.

They will experience Japanese culture, learn about the Japanese way of life and share their Australia with a Japanese student in return.

In conjunction with Penrith Council, the Penrith International Friendship Committee has been successfully running this annual exchange program for 29 years and has facilitated the exchange of more than 240 students from Australia and Japan.

“Houses will be under serious threat” Councillor’s dire bushfire warning over new homes in Jordan Springs JADE ALIPRANDI

ouses in Jordan Springs could be under serious threat if a bushfire was to break out, according to Independent Penrith Councillor Kevin Crameri.

Cr Crameri has asked for a memo back from Council on how several new developments along Ninth Avenue in Jordan Springs were approved as they leave no room for firefighters to gain access.

It was agreed during the development stages that the street, shared by Jordan Springs and Llandilo, wouldn’t have a road behind it for fire crews to access but that the properties built along there would include side access to the back of the properties.

“There are currently two homes being built there now and neither leave enough room for fire crews to get through,” Cr Crameri told the Weekender.

“The homes are being built fence to fence and people aren’t being made aware of this when they purchase a home in the area.

“It’s much too dangerous if a fire breaks out because it’s extremely time consuming for the fire crews to work around the homes.”

“If a fire comes in from the southerly direction through the national park or something, houses will be under serious threat,” he said.

“We have to pull the hoses out, unwind

them for about 100-200 metres to fight one section of fire and then we will have to wind them up again, move down further and wind them out again – it’s time consuming.”

Cr Crameri has asked that any new houses approved in the area need to have access for firefighters, otherwise the consequences could be disastrous.

In last week’s Weekender in an article about the naming of Western Sydney Airport, Councillor Ross Fowler finally admitted that the airport will bring adverse impacts to the people of Penrith.

In fact he used this admission to give weight to his suggested name. For the past few years Cr Fowler along with many of his colleagues in the Labor/Liberal alliance on Penrith Council, have refused to acknowledge the airport project (if built), will adversely impact our health, noise and pollution levels, children’s learning abilities, lifestyle and our environment.

Furthermore, these same Councillors have repeatedly refused to provide balanced information (impacts as well as benefits) to Penrith residents. They seem transfixed by a belief that airport jobs to be delivered in 40 years’ time, are worth the sacrifices our community will have to make from day one of airport operations.

Many in our community think otherwise!

I understand the Magistrates are only administering the laws as legislated by Parliament, but enough is enough. It’s time for a change, a serious change with more severe penal-

ties. How about the following changes; Abolish the first offence defence. If found guilty the penalty is such and such, no leniency; No more minimum or maximum sentences; No promising sportsperson, or I need my licence for work defence etc. If you’re guilty the penalty is this; No good behaviour bonds. If the person was a good behaviour citizen they wouldn’t be in court.

he team at the Luke Priddis Foundation in Penrith proudly unveiled their brand new state-of-the-art sensory integration learning space on High Street this week.

A long time in the making, the project was made possible by Penrith Lions Club, Australian Lions Foundation and Bondi Lions Club, with the Penrith branch donating a whopping $18,000.

On hand to help show off the new space was Penrith resident Maddison Fellowes, who was the first child at the Foundation to receive therapy just over three years ago.

“This space is absolutely amazing – Maddison can come in here and play while getting her therapy at the same time,” Maddison’s mum, Kelly said.

“The Foundation is just brilliant – the support from the team over the last few years has been amazing and I can’t thank them enough.”

General Manager of the Foundation, Tamara Van Antwerpen, told the Weekender it’s a dream come true to see the room up and running.

“It’s quite overwhelming,” she said.

Daniel returns home to find some inspiration EMILY NEWTON

t Clair’s Daniel DiMarco has returned home for the first time in nine years to write his follow-up script after completing his first major film.

After spending time in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, Mr DiMarco is excited to be home for at least a few months to begin work on his second film.

“I hadn’t been home in nine years due to work, and it’s really important to get home and back to my parents’ place and my old friends, and get in that place where I can start from scratch,” Mr DiMarco said.

“I think I write best in the environment that I grew up around... I don’t know how I went nine years.”

He said it’s great to see that western Sydney still has that welcoming and comfortable feel.

“It all seems really homely and comforting,” he said.

“It’s really great to come back to the west, people treat each other better out here.”

Mr DiMarco is already an award-winning Australian-Canadian writer and director, with two internationally recognised short films, ‘Spoon Man’ and ‘Bella’.

His newly finished feature film, ‘Juggernaut’, was born out of frustration and

explores a modern version of Cain and Abel.

“I had a failed project that I had been working on for three years and I decided to cut the cord on that,” he said.

“Some people are fated to love each other and some people are fated to hate each other, and I wanted to explore that.”

The aid of the Australian and Canadian co-production treaty allowed him to create a film he could be proud of.

“I am an Australian film maker, so it’s really weird hearing the Canadian and American accents on my film,” Mr DiMarco said.

“I really want to make an Australian film, whether it’s this one, or the next one or the next one, I’ve always planned to make a film in Australia.”

Mr DiMarco was overwhelmed at the support from cast and crew, and humbled to have worked alongside rising star Jack Kesy.

“Right after I used him, he got one of the leads in ‘Baywatch’ with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron... and right as we speak he’s riding across the desert with Chris Hemsworth,” Mr DiMarco said.

His current script, titled ‘The Bigamist’ will focus on strong female characters, a sharp contrast to the male oriented film of ‘Juggernaut’.

The campaign will award $10,000, $3,000 and $2,000 to three local schools to spend on what they need most, as nominated by the community.

Licensee Peggy Willcox said she couldn’t believe just how many nominations came through when the campaign began last week.

“I definitely thought it would be slower,

but we had about 200 nominations in the first 48 hours,” she said.

“When you nominate a school we ask where you want the money to be spent, and that’s where we’re getting the feedback that people want air conditioning for their school.”

The idea for the campaign began as Ms Willcox was looking over marketing costs for the upcoming year, and wanted to give back to the community rather than spend thousands on advertising.

Nominations are open until the end of March. Voting will begin in April with every nomination going through to the voting stage.

fter supplying 70 Christmas hampers last year, Barnardos Western Region Auxiliary is kicking off this year’s fundraising with their annual summer fashion parade and sale.

This Monday, February 27 from 10am the Auxiliary members are inviting the public to take part in their fundraiser to snap up a bargain.

“We run two fashion parades each year, and have done for the last 15 years or so,” President Jill King said.

The fashion parade is well-known to regular clients for its range of styles and colours that suit both young and old.

“We spend all the money that we make on emergency food every month and the Christmas hampers,” Treasurer John Kelaher said.

The event costs $7.50 for lunch plus entry to the parade and sale. It will be held at St Andrews Church Hall, cnr Lucasville Rd and Green St, Glenbrook.

Silent killer often found when all hope is lost JADE ALIPRANDI

t’s a cancer that’s hard to find, hard to diagnose, and is often found in its late stages.

Ovarian cancer is diagnosed annually in nearly a quarter of a million women globally, and is responsible for 140,000 deaths each year.

Frequently diagnosed when the cancer is already at an advanced stage, women often delay seeking help.

This may be because the woman thinks her symptoms are due to ‘the time of the month’, menopause, ‘something I ate’ or confused with other common stomach and digestive complaints.

For Cranebrook resident, Sharon Carter, this was exactly the case when her experience began in 2012.

“It started with things I didn’t recognise which I just thought was a part of getting older as a woman and the doctors I saw didn’t really pick anything up either,” she said.

“Almost two years later, I was really questioning why I was having these symptoms, as well as several new problems.”

Mrs Carter had numerous blood tests, middle of the night ambulance trips and multiple ultrasounds.

She shocked gynaecologists and oncologists who immediately scheduled her for surgery when they found the 22x20x12cm lump in her pelvis, making the brave decision to have a complete hysterectomy via laparotomy.

Post-surgery, doctors found an egg-sized cancer within the tumour.

“It did feel really uncomfortable – it wasn’t hard and solid, it was more squishy and it was pushing in on my organs,” Mrs Carter said.

“I gained a bit of weight but my appetite was gone and I felt really full quickly but my clothes weren’t getting tighter; it wasn’t making any sense.”

The hardest part after the recovery was dealing with surgical menopause at 33, Mrs Carter said.

“It’s something you don’t expect and you definitely don’t feel ready for at that time of your life,” she said.

Mrs Carter said women should get checked regularly, and especially when something isn’t right.

“Don’t think doctors are always right,” she said.

“Some women don’t understand symptoms with cancers but if you think something isn’t right persist and get some answers.

D-Day for Station Street bridges Work began last weekend to remove the two bridges over Station Street in the Penrith CBD. The removal will continue over the next two weekends.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said Station Street would be closed to traffic from Henry Street and High Street from 9pm on Saturdays through to 5am on Mondays.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and we thank the community for their cooperation,” he said.

The 10-week project to remove the Allen Place ramp and elevated car park is on schedule.

The project is expected to be completed

by March 20, weather permitting.

here are many misconceptions that business owners hold. Successful ones challenge these myths and swallow their pride to admit they may have been doing it wrong.

Here are some common misconceptions to consider: ‘Always maintain focus’ If you spend your whole day jumping from one task to another, finishing nothing, then you have a problem with focus.

But we do also need distractions to boost creativity. If we force ourselves to keep focused on a task until it is finished, we may find that it takes longer to complete.

Taking a break actually helps you to RE-focus and increase energy levels.

As long as you don’t get too distracted, having ‘less’ focus may benefit you. ‘Don’t let the small stuff stress you’ If you have read my articles for any length of time, you would know I definitely disagree with this one!

Although we shouldn’t get stuck on something genuinely unimportant, attention to detail, and being concerned with the seemingly insignificant things, can create great benefits.

Customers will notice the extra effort and sometimes stress can increase your effort levels. ‘Always take on a new client’ I have learned the hard way that it is not wise to accept every project or customer that comes your way.

If you take on work that is outside your scope, or that you loathe to do, you will soon create a business that you don’t want to be in.

Or if you take on more than you can handle, you will gain a reputation for over-promising and under-delivering.

Neither scenario is good.

Be clear about your capacity to accept extra work and be prepared to decline work when necessary. ‘You need to know how to do it all’ No you don’t. I have yet to meet a business owner who hasn’t started out this way.

The ones who stay in business longer than five years soon work out that delegation is the key to success.

No-one is an expert on everything.

Challenge the myths, and you’ll find even more success!

Something for everyone at this year’s Luddenham Show little bit of Mount Panorama will descend on Luddenham Showground on February 18 and 19, with the historic grounds to rumble to the roar of 500 horse power V8 donks as Holden and Ford utes scream around the main arena.

All the way from Adelaide, the Trackskill V8 Race Ute Show is unquestionably one of Australia’s most spectacular car stunt teams and has been seen all over the country including Royal Show performances.

from the crowd will be chosen at random to sit in the passenger seat for a white knuckle, spine tingling relay race – it’s sure to be a lot faster than the dodgem cars as the dirt sprays.

Another feature will see these daring drivers pit their talents against a horse, bike and souped up lawnmowers in an obstacle challenge.

For those who like their entertainment a little more sedate do not fret, much of Luddenham’s charm dates back to a

by-gone era. Living up to its motto of ‘The Country Show’, the annual event takes place for the 113th time on the picturesque and historic Luddenham Showground.

One of only around four showgrounds in NSW still owned by the local community, the surroundings would make you believe that you were many miles into the country and not a mere stone’s throw from the future site of Sydney’s next airport.

The event is run entirely by a small but very hard working committee, many of

whom can trace their families’ association with the show all the way back to the beginning.

As 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Australian light horse charge at Beersheba in World War I, the last and one of the greatest horseback charges in history, you can wander through the grounds and historic buildings that were actually the base for Luddenham’s very own Light Horse squadron at the time of the war.

So much to do at one of the great country shows he Luddenham Show will kick off each morning with horse classes held on the main arena.

Known through the equine industry as one of the major lead-up events to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, some of the finest horse flesh in the country will go under the judge’s eye.

Saturday morning will also play host to cattle assessing, wander down and see some beautiful juicy steaks (while they are still attached to the rump of an animal!).

The cowboys will battle it out with rank bulls in the open bull ride, we will also see the rodeo champions of the future in the steer and poddy calf rides.

At Luddenham you do not need to simply sit back with a beer and watch the entertainment, you can actually be involved yourself with events on the main arena such as the dog high jump contest, Yank-a-ute for the adults and Yank-abuggy for the kids.

If artistic ability is more your style, there is a wide range of classes from painting, photography, quilt making and flowers to homebrew, farm produce and even Lego building.

Always renowned for the quality of the stage entertainment, this year is no exception with a talent quest, reptile displays

with a difference, clowns and shearing demonstrations all scheduled to take place.

The main band this year is Rough Stock, back by popular demand. This great country-rock band hails from Riverstone and can be seen touring the country and are always one of the most sought after acts at each Tamworth Country Music Festival.

They will have the crowd up toe tapping and dancing well into the night, Held in an adjoining paddock overlooking dams and the Blue Mountains as a back drop, Sunday is the ever popular sheep dog trials.

The final day will also see one of the sports invented right here in Australia take a spotlight with the always well-liked wood chopping contest.

Some of the best axe-men of not only Australia but also New Zealand will have their razor-sharp axes flying as they battle to cut through the timber in the quickest time.

The stage program allows once again for the young or young at heart to get involved themselves with events such as the ice-cream eating contest, whip cracking, talent quest and the Luddenham Country Kid hitting the main stage.

To round out and finish off the weekend, another new attraction will hit the main arena on Sunday afternoon.

It will be like crossing an intersection

with your mother-in-law, as the demolition derby takes to the field. It is sure to be a no holds barred smash-em-up fest with only one winner!

Luddenham Show will always retain its traditional style or 126 years, the Luddenham Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society have been running traditional country shows in Luddenham, with 13 shows cancelled due to wars and droughts.

Around 5000 people entered the gates for last year’s event, raving about the fun and activities on offer.

President of the Society, Wayne Willmington, said the show is a heap of fun.

“It’s a real country show,” he said.

“There’s some new things going on this year like the Demolition Derby, which is really exciting and also some of our older activities too.”

Mr Willmington said even with new developments coming through the town, the country feel within the show will remain.

“It’s a great thing to be able to bring a bit of the country to the city and for people that live in suburbia to be part of the country,” he said.

“Things will change with the new developments and plans but we really want to keep up the country vibe.”

Not only is it a great show now, but in the early days people were loving what was on offer.

“In one of the earlier editions of the Nepean Times, the first show was actually described as the best first show in the colony of NSW so that’s really cool,” Mr Willmington said.

While the society help run the show, it’s the community’s involvement that really pushes it along.

“I just want to thank the community who have kept supporting the show for all these years,” Mr Willmington said.

“I’d also like to thank our committee who put many hours into ensuring the show can go ahead.”

Sheep shearing, reptile shows, dog high jump, chainsaw competitions, horse and cattle classes, ‘Luddenham’s Got Talent’, and ice-cream eating competitions are just some of the fun activities on offer for the weekend.

“This year the show will come to an end with our first ever Demolition Derby at 4pm on Sunday,” Mr Willmington said.

Whether you’re a child attending your first show or a veteran of the event, there’s definitely something for everyone this weekend.

The Luddenham Show will be held this weekend, Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19.

Sweating out the classics

ny band that’s been around for decades is likely to have gone through a few line-up changes.

At last count Blood, Sweat and Tears has featured more than 150 musicians.

Rather than being a blight on the band’s legacy, it’s more-so a testament to the fact that it’s the music – not the individual personalities – that make Blood, Sweat

and Tears so popular with audiences young and old.

Heading up the current incarnation of the American jazz-rock band is ‘American Idol’ season 4 runner up Bo Bice – who performed one of the band’s biggest hits ‘Spinning Wheel’ live on the show.

Fast forward to 2013 and after a dinner meeting, Bo was asked to join one of his favourite bands as guest vocalist.

“Initially I had just come in to do three or so shows,” he said.

“Then three turned into five, and the five turned into eight, and now we’re on our second trip over to Australia.”

For Bo it’s been a fantastic experience performing on stage without having to

worry about the responsibilities of a solo artist, where you have employees relying on you to make a living.

“It’s offered me a couple of years of just being able to be a normal guy, but for 90 minutes a day I get to go play rock star which is kinda cool,” he said.

“I get to do what I love – playing with Blood, Sweat and Tears – but also it’s left me more opportunity to do some other things that I love – being a good dad and husband, but also pursuing opening my own music school and music store.”

Blood, Sweat and Tears will be heading to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers in March, and while Bo is now well and truly a member of the group, he is adamant

that the focus be on the music, not him personally.

“If you’re expecting to come along and see Bo Bice be the star of the show you’re probably not going to be very happy, because the star of the show is the catalogue,” he said.

“You have to be on top of your game to play this catalogue of music, and I believe any singer on the face of the planet would say that.”

Blood, Sweat and Tears will be performing at the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 18 at 8pm.

Kicking off in March, the local theatre company will put their own unique touch on Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.

The classic tale of love and justice will be taken from its original setting of Messina in Sicily, to Carolina in the era of the American Civil War. ‘Shakespeare by the River’ has been running for more than a decade, bringing together talented local performers

with eager audiences, all in an idyllic riverside setting.

So grab your loved ones, a picnic rug and some snacks, and head to the river to experience this fantastic familyfriendly outdoor theatre event.

The Acting Factory’s ‘Shakespeare by the River’ will be held at Regatta Park in Emu Plains at 8pm on the first three Friday and Saturday evenings of March. There will also be 4pm matinee performances on Sunday, March 12 and Sunday, March 19.

Two talks/panel discussions from the Opera House’s ‘All About Women’ program will be live streamed to The Joan on Sunday, March 5.

The morning will kick off with Academy Award winner Geena Davis’ talk on ‘Women and Media’.

Geena will look at how women and girls are portrayed in the media and how gender stereotypes are reproduced.

Following the talk host Andrea Turner-Boys, the Founder of Women with Altitude, will lead an audience

discussion live at The Joan.

The second half of the event will feature Yassmin Abdel-Magied (pictured), Van Badham, Lindy West and panel chair Fauziah Ibrahima as they discuss the subject of ‘Nasty Women’ and what happens when women choose not to conform.

‘Nasty Women’ will again be followed by an engaging live discussion, giving local audiences the chance to voice their opinions and concerns.

Do you ever feel like you’re walking on a rock in your shoes?

Or do you have that constant feeling of your socks being scrunched up when they aren’t?

In between the spaces of the metatarsals in the foot, there are a series of digital nerves that innervate the toes.

Each nerve is surrounded by a sheath which provides protection to the nerve.

When the area is overloaded due to an increase of pressure, this sheath becomes irritated and thickened in an attempt to protect the nerve.

It occurs most commonly in middleaged females, particularly in those who wear a lot of high heels and constrictive footwear.

The most common space it affects is in between metatarsals three and four.

The likelihood of developing a neuroma depends on a range of factors.

These include: • Foot mechanics – can lead to a pressure overload • High heels – increase the amount of pressure on the forefoot • Tight footwear – compress the area.

There are a few indicators that you may be suffering from a morton’s neuroma.

These include: • Pain under the ball of the foot • Feelings of a pebble in your shoe or sock scrunched up • Pain and/or numbness into the lesser toes • Pain on direct palpation of the area • Pain on side-to-side compression of the forefoot Usually a diagnosis can be made on assessment, however sometimes ultrasound imaging can be used to confirm the diagnosis.

Following an assessment by a Podiatrist a suitable treatment plan will be made.

This aims to address the cause of the issue and therefore reduce the pain symptoms that you have been experiencing.

It may be necessary to use custom orthotic therapy in the treatment of a neuroma to improve foot mechanics and distribute the pressure more evenly throughout the foot.

Footwear is an important aspect in the treatment process of a neuroma.

This is because forefoot compression due to tight footwear aggravates a morton’s neuroma and increases the symptoms.

In all cases it is necessary to ensure that there is adequate width across the forefoot area to minimise the risk of this

happening.

The frightening disease that could kill your furry friends Vets want to rid Penrith of Parvovirus by 2020, but need pet owners to keep their dogs vaccinated...

Parvovirus is a deadly, highly infectious viral disease that affects dogs.

The virus is shed from infected dogs in their saliva, vomit and faeces. It is extremely hardy and can resist most household disinfectants and survive in soil. It can be transported on shoes, clothes, flying insects and tyres. Dogs become infected when there is oral exposure to the virus in faeces, soil and fomites and they will be affected within three to seven days of exposure.

Clinical signs of infection are inappetence, vomiting and haemorrhagic diarrhoea. The virus causes sloughing of the intestinal lining and attacks the immune system.

Affected dogs have severe abdominal pain, they become dehydrated and will often develop complications like pneumonia and sepsis. Dogs without treatment normally die rapidly. To detect Parvovirus infection a simple test that takes only minutes to perform is available.

There is no way of killing the virus once dogs are affected. Treatment is intensive and aims to support the body

This young guy is a typical cattle dog pup, he is so happy and full of life. With lots of fun energy to burn he would make a great companion for a family that likes to be active daily with walks and a lot of playtime. Past the puppy stage and now a happy and friendly 2 year old this girl would be a pleasure to add to your home. Commonly cases are seen in puppies being exposed while they are still receiving their vaccination course and adult dogs that miss their booster vaccinations.

Isolating dogs reduces exposure risk but due to the way Parvovirus is spread, isolation alone is not guaranteed to fully protect your dog.

Our mission is to have the Penrith region free from Parvovirus by the year 2020.

This can only be achieved by increasing vaccination rates. As with human diseases, the more animals in a population that are protected, the more effectively it reduces the spread of the disease and helps protect those most vulnerable to infection. We recommend all dogs are kept up-to-date with their vaccinations to provide protection against this deadly disease. Through ongoing support from the RSPCA and our staff volunteering their free time, we have developed community service programs to increase vaccination rates and provide assistance to eligible pet owners.

The findings of the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse were released last week, and are truly shocking, with one in 14 Australian Catholic priests who worked between 1950 and 2010 among 75 Catholic Church bodies surveyed by the Commission alleged to be perpetrators of child sexual abuse.

Last year Sydney dance teacher Grant Davies was sentenced to 24 years in jail for multiple child sex offences against nine victims over several years.

Public hearings have in recent years investigated allegations of abuse within sporting bodies including Tennis Australia, Tennis NSW, Football NSW, the NSW Institute of Sport and others, and examined the Child Protection policies of organisations including Cricket Australia, Netball Australia, Little Athletics, Surf Lifesaving Australia, the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Olympic and Paralympic Committees in a bid to stamp out the potential for abuse to occur in sporting clubs and communities in the future.

This can be a huge cause of anxiety for

parents – just as we can’t drown proof our children, we also can’t abuse proof our children – so how do we ensure the safest possible environment for our kids to pursue their activities and interests?

Most clubs and associations now have strict child protection measures in place, so familiarise yourself with their policies, and make sure you are comfortable with the protection measures in place.

At both of our swim centres, all of our employees are required to obtain a Working With Children Check, which involves a National Police Check (criminal history record check) and a review of reportable workplace misconduct.

The check is valid for five years, however, it will be continuously monitored for any new relevant offences or workplace records to ensure that the check remains current.

We have gender appropriate change room policies, and zero tolerance on recording devices or mobile phones in change rooms.

We advertise that no parent is allowed to take photos of any children other than their own, and that under no circumstances may a picture of another child be uploaded to social media without express permission by the parent, and that to do so may be a violation of state and federal laws.

For competitive swimming, Swimming Australia launched a new ‘Safe

Sport’ framework for codes of conduct, complaint handling and child protection on July 29 2016, which Swimming NSW and the other states have adopted and are in the process of rolling out to Swimming Clubs in NSW to keep all children safer.

The framework includes providing a safe environment for everyone involved in the sport of swimming, and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children or young people in particular.

• 4 nori sheets, torn into pieces • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon chilli flakes • 2 teaspoon sweet paprika • 1 red onion, finely diced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed or finely chopped • 1 teaspoon finely grated ginger • 200g (7oz) broccolini, cut into bite-sized pieces • 2 carrots, grated or finely julienned • 2 spring onions (scallions), thinly sliced • 200g (7oz) snow peas (mangetout), trimmed and thinly sliced • 4 x 100g (31/2oz) skinless salmon fillets • 180g (61/2oz) soba (buckwheat) noodles • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds • 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil + • Pinch of salt flakes

• Ginger and sesame dressing • 2 teaspoons finely grated ginger • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (preferably light flavour) • 2 teaspoons sesame oil + • 2 tablespoons brown rice vinegar • 1 tablespoon tamari 1. Put the nori sheets, salt, black pepper, chilli flakes, paprika and half of both the sesame seeds in a food processor or Vitamix and pulse until grainy (be careful not to over-process).

2. Heat two teaspoons of the extra virgin olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and gently sauté for a few minutes until the onion is soft but not browned. Add the nori sesame mix and stir to combine over the heat for one minute to marry the flavours.

Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

3. Heat the remaining oil in the pan, add the salmon and gently fry for 2-3 minutes on each side. Place the fillets in a baking dish and top with the nori mixture. At this stage you can place them in the fridge until you are ready to cook if you want to prepare them ahead of time.

4. Preheat the oven to fan-forced 200°C (400°F/Gas 6). Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Place the broccolini in a steamer and place over the boiling water to cook for 1-2 minutes

or until tender. Remove and run under cold water to stop the cooking process and maintain the gorgeous bright green colour.

5. Add the soba noodles to the boiling water. Boil rapidly for four minutes or until al dente, drain into a colander and run the noodles under cold water twice. Place into a mixing bowl and combine with the carrot, spring onion, snow peas, broccolini and the remaining sesame seeds.

6. Put all the dressing ingredients in a jar and shake to combine. Pour over the soba noodle salad and toss to combine.

7. Put the salmon in the oven and bake for minute minutes to cook through and crisp the top. Divide the soba noodle salad among four plates and top with the baked salmon. Enjoy this dish hot or cold.

f there’s one thing every Panthers fan knows, it’s that when it comes to matches against arch rivals and western Sydney neighbours Parramatta, there’s no such thing as a trial.

And with the NRL inexplicably not scheduling a premiership match between the two clubs at Pepper Stadium this year, this Saturday night’s pre-season encounter will have plenty of extra bite.

The match gives Penrith coach Anthony Griffin the chance to put his troops through one last test before next month’s season opener against St George-Illawarra.

With a number of positions – including

who will fill Josh Mansour’s vacant wing spot – still up for grabs, Griffin said tomorrow night’s Battle of the West at Pepper Stadium will be more important than ever.

“There’s still some positions to be decided but, in general, it’s a good opportunity for most of those guys to get one hit-out together, and hopefully we don’t have any trouble with injury,” Griffin told the Weekender.

“If we can get 50 or 60 minutes into most of the players on Saturday night, we’ll be able to round off our preparation and get a good idea of our side going into Round 1.”

For the first time this pre-season, Penrith will unleash skipper Matt Moylan, while Te Maire Martin and Nathan Cleary will line up in the halves.

Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey will also make their 2017 club debuts following last Friday’s All Stars event in Newcastle, while injured pair Dean Whare and Peta Hiku will continue to push their case for a spot in the backline.

“Everyone is fit and healthy at the moment and there’s a lot of competition for spots, especially in the forwards,” Griffin said.

“It’s a good opportunity for them to get out and compete on Saturday night.”

Last weekend Griffin had his first chance to test out the majority of his squad when Penrith took on Canterbury in very hot conditions at Belmore Sports Ground.

With fears the match would be called off due to the record heat, Griffin said there

was little doubt the game would go ahead.

“It was hot out there but I didn’t hear any whinging or complaining from either squad or staff,” he said.

“I spoke to Des [Hasler] before the game and he was happy to play. It was obviously extremely hot during the day but that time of night it wasn’t too bad.”

Penrith’s side, made up largely of youngsters and new recruits including Mitch Rein, prevailed over the more experienced Bulldogs outfit 20-10.

“We defended well for most of the game, we let in a couple of soft tries at the end of both halves, but in general we moved pretty well in defence, I thought,” he said.

“It was good to give 31 players some time and it was good to see them uninjured.”

Historic new chapter for popular sport The new Sydney Derby: Giants and Swifts go head to head as Super Netball competition gets underway NATHAN TAYLOR

new rivalry in Australian sport will be born this Saturday evening when new local franchise Giants Netball and the NSW Swifts do battle for the very first time.

The two Sydney-based netball clubs will go head to head in the season opener of Australia’s brand new Super Netball competition.

Featuring eight Australian franchises, the Super Netball competition replaces the long-running ANZ Championship as the country’s top netball league.

Speaking with the Weekender, Giants goal shooter Kristina Brice said she’s looking forward to creating a fierce rivalry with the Swifts.

“We’re hoping it’ll be similar to Swans v Giants in the AFL,” she said.

“Hopefully we’ll get plenty of fans coming to watch as it’s going to be new and exciting for them as well.”

With major broadcasting deals with Channel Nine and Telstra, the Super Netball competition is set to finally put the popular participation sport on the map once and for all.

“The broadcast opportunity certainly gets the sport out there,” Brice said.

“The AFL Women’s competition has been really successful with crowds and on TV, so hopefully we can have that same success when we start this weekend.”

Making the start of the competition even more exciting for the 22-year-old is the fact that she’s returning home to Sydney after a number of years plying her trade with the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

A junior with the Hassall Grove Netball Club in the Mount Druitt District, Brice took out the ANZ Championship Best New Talent award in 2016, but said the opportunity to come home was one she couldn’t pass up.

“I had a really good season last year with Adelaide and a number of offers came

“Adelaide gave me so many opportunities, I was down there the last two years but nothing is better than being able to play back home.”

Brice’s support network will be front and centre when she takes to the court at 5pm tomorrow evening at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

“There’s so many people that said they can’t wait to watch me play,” she said.

“It was harder when I was in Adelaide

last year because I only got to play one game in Sydney, so they’re all looking forward to watching me play.”

enrith is always very well represented at the Summer Olympic Games, but soon it could have its very own Winter Olympic athlete with local resident Nicholas Masjuk excelling in the high energy sport of snowboarding.

The 20-year-old, who is currently based in Colorado, will represent Australia next week at the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Japan.

While this will be Masjuk’s biggest competition to date, he already has his eyes set on a Winter Olympics berth in the coming years.

“Anything is possible,” Masjuk told the Weekender from the United States.

“The Asian Winter Games weren’t part of my plan as I didn’t expect to be called up, but I’ll definitely do my best to qualify for the 2018 Olympics, if not 2022.”

Masjuk has been snowboarding since the tender age of seven when his parents took him to Queenstown in New Zealand for a holiday.

“In Year 7 my parents asked me if I was interested in any proper training and learning how to race,” Masjuk recalled.

“I ended up enrolling in a program down

at Thredbo and every weekend my parents would take me to Thredbo to train.”

As Masjuk began to improve, he took his raw and exciting talent to the US for even more training – finding him on some of the best ski fields on the planet.

In 2014, after completing his HSC, Masjuk went to beautiful Steamboat Springs in Colorado and joined their Winter Sports Pro-Am team, spending five months learning from the best.

“In the 2014/15 USA season, I came second overall in the USASA National Championships and then the following year I bettered that by coming first overall at the USASA National Championships and first in Boardercross,” Masjuk said.

Following excellent results from the 2015/16 season, as well as his international ranking and being number one in Australia, Masjuk was selected to compete at his first Asian Winter Games.

The competition, which gets underway on Sunday, will see 31 countries from the Asian and Oceania regions participate in 11 sports including skiing, figure and speed skating, curling and ice hockey.

Masjuk will compete in the Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom and Parallel Slalom.

“I can’t wait to compete at an Olympicstandard competition against some of the best in the world, experiencing the opening ceremony, village life and meeting athletes,” Masjuk said.

“I just hope I represent Australia to the best of my ability. A top 16 finish would be great, top eight would be sensational.”

Fencing Hit TV show ‘Game of Thrones’ inspires female fencers NATHAN TAYLOR

omen’s fencing is on the rise in Penrith thanks to recent Aussie Olympic gold medallist Chloe Esposito and mega hit TV series ‘Game of Thrones’.

Penrith Academy of Fencing, located in Jamisontown, held its annual Bill Gal tournament late last year, with the top four positions in the Women’s Foil Final won by club members – Sinead Elliott, Chloe Steward, Siobhan Elliott and Rose Cook.

Displaying a mix of finesse and technical skills, 14-year-old Sinead was crowned overall champion.

Sinead finished her best year to date by winning three regional titles and representing NSW at two national fencing competitions.

At the National School Championship, held in Brisbane, Sinead took home silver after a close 15-13 loss to the Queensland state champion.

Speaking with the Weekender, coach Rene Kopiec said Sinead had her most impressive year to date in the sport.

“Sinead went into the most competitions last year and we’re really proud of the effort she’s put in,” he said.

“She went awfully close to winning gold

in Brisbane, so we were exceptionally pleased with the result.”

Kopiec said if Sinead continues with fencing, she could one day represent Australia and perhaps emulate Esposito.

“Like all kids she has potential, it’s really how hard she applies herself,” he said.

“Sinead’s got the right temperament, she’s very competitive but she also has the right amount of skill and finesse.

“With hard practice, she has the ability to progress well in the sport.”

Fencing is a unique sport for both males and females over the age of 10.

For over 30 years, Penrith Academy of Fencing has provided training, competition and coaching for both children and adults from beginners through to international competitors.

Kopiec said there’s a new wave of interest in the sport from females.

“Last year we saw an increase in females taking up the sport,” he said.

“With the success of Chloe Esposito at the Olympics, it’s an exciting time for the sport.”

The club is now commencing new beginner classes and welcomes all new starters to learn the art of fencing.

“We are currently on the hunt for new people to be involved. There will be plenty of competitions they can enter,” he said.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Due to the record heat last Saturday, the Round 13 NSW Premier Cricket match between Penrith and Eastern Suburbs was called off.

Not since Sydney Grade Cricket launched in 1893 has a whole round been called off due to the heat.

Games are expected to resume this weekend.

CRICKET: Penrith are through to the Sydney Premier Cricket Limited Overs Grand Final after defeating Sutherland with one ball to spare last Sunday afternoon at Glenn McGrath Oval.

Chasing 229 for victory, Big Bash League stars Pat Cummins (2/34), Ryan Gibson (80) and Josh Lalor (2/37) all played pivotal roles in Penrith’s thrilling win.

Lalor hit the winning runs off the second last ball to see the Penrith side into the Grand Final with a dramatic one wicket win.

Penrith will now take on Hawkesbury for the title at 10am next Sunday, February 26 at Howell Oval.

BASEBALL: After a well-earned bye last round, Penrith will return to the diamond against Central Coast during Round 18 of the NSW State Baseball League competition.

Penrith will contest the final round of the regular season in third position, with a win in both games ensuring them a spot in the playoffs.

AFLW: The GWS Giants have lost their second game of the new AFL

Women’s competition, going down to Carlton by 13 points last weekend.

GWS kept a narrow lead for most of the day before five successive goals saw the Blues get home 47-34.

“For three quarters of the game we were pretty much on top, but unfortunately it is a 60 minute game and that’s when Carlton really hurt us,” Giants coach, Tim Schmidt said.

A huge crowd is expected this Saturday at noon when the Giants play their first home game of the season against Fremantle at Blacktown International Sportspark.

LEAGUE: The opening round of the NSWRL Junior Representative season was cancelled last weekend due to the record heat. With the weather cooling down, games are expected to return this weekend. In the SG Ball competition, Penrith will take on the Western Sydney Academy of Sport while in the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith will also take on the Academy. Both games will be played at Pepper Stadium from 10am.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC will do battle in the third Sydney Derby of the A-League season this weekend.

The Wanderers lost 2-0 to Central Coast last weekend.

enrith Golf Club is set to host the 2017 PGA Legends Tour Pro-Am. The Legends Tour Pro-Am event will see 1983 Australian Open champion Peter Fowler, 1991 British Open runnerup Mike Harwood plus a host of other PGA Professionals do battle for $15,000 in prize money.

Backed by the PGA Tour of Australasia, next Friday’s competition is the first of the NSW events for the 2017 PGA Legends Tour.

General Manager, Brendon Kop, said Penrith Golf Club was delighted to host the PGA Legends Tour event after the success of the inaugural Pro-Am in 2016.

“Golf is a game for life and we are inviting members of the local community to participate in an event with some of Australia’s finest golfers,” he said.

The PGA Legends Tour Pro-Am will be held on Friday, February 24 from 7am to 12.30pm at Penrith Golf Club.
