St Marys to lose local RMS registry Office closure will force locals to use Service NSW centres in surrounding suburbs DALE DRINKWATER

t Marys residents wishing to renew their license or use other motor registry services will be forced to travel to Penrith, Blacktown or Mount Druitt with the RMS to shut its doors.

The decision to close the RMS at St Marys is a backflip on the State Government’s promise in September 2012, that the amalgamation of services would not affect the St Marys registry.

From the middle of this year, transactions traditionally handled by the motor registry will be taken on by Service NSW centres.

Penrith Councillor Jackie Greenow said neither of the closest centres are easy to access.

“It’s hard to get to Mount Druitt by bus and the Service NSW centre is quite a walk from the train station,” she said.

“A lot of people complain about the one at Penrith because of where it is, and the driveway is very bad to get into it.”

Ms Greenow fears for the future of surrounding businesses in the CBD and inside Station Plaza where the registry is located.

Ms Greenow met with State Member for Londonderry Prue Car, St Marys Town Centre Manager Paulette Adams and furious residents in St Marys on Monday.

Ms Car said residents who have been using the St Marys RMS for decades are

outraged and she will be demanding answers from the Minister.

“I am shocked that local residents and businesses on Queen Street were not consulted on this decision and I am calling for the Government to urgently reconsider the closure of the St Marys RMS,” she said.

“In a time when Penrith Council is work-

ing with local businesses to invest in the St Marys CBD and revitalise Queen Street, the State Government is cutting a popular service which will mean less people on Queen Street.”

The Minister responsible for Service NSW, Dominic Perrottet, did not respond to the Weekender’s questions.

rime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, like many others, took to social media last Sunday to post a special note about his wife Lucy on Valentine’s Day. Personally I don’t get the whole social media ‘brag’ when it comes to days like Valentine’s Day, but to each their own.

Unfortunately for Mr Turnbull, what should have been a loving message was hijacked by proponents of marriage equality, many of whom slammed the Prime Minister – essentially saying that because gay people can’t get married, Mr Turnbull shouldn’t be publicly celebrating the love he has for his wife.

It should have been just a few silly comments on social media, but of course organisations like the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail think that trolling Facebook for users’ comments and turning it into a story is part of current-day journalism, so it gets wider coverage.

As I’ve written in this column before, I’m a huge supporter of marriage equality. I think Australia should act sooner rather than later to change laws to allow gay people to get married.

However, I’m also quite respectful of those who have an alternate view because like those who support marriage equality, everyone has the right to an opinion.

What the very vocal supporters of marriage equality need to be careful of is not losing the mainstream support of the Australian public, which has grown significantly in recent years.

In a funny way, supporters of marriage equality face a similar fate to the Western Sydney Wanderers’ active supporter group, the Red and Black Bloc (RBB).

What I mean by that is that a few years ago, the RBB were considered very much part of the Wanderers’ success story – their passion was helping reignite interest in soccer across the nation.

However, as time has gone on the supporter group has attracted an air of arrogance about it, and no longer has widespread public support.

Supporters of marriage equality have not yet reached that position but they must be careful not to get the public offside.

Promoting their argument about marriage equality by criticising somebody else for expressing their love is not the best approach.

At the moment Australian laws do not allow same sex couples to marry.

But they certainly don’t stop you expressing your love, just like Malcolm Turnbull did last weekend.

proponents to secure what they want long-term is to ensure the wider mainstream public’s support is solid.

Sensible, measured arguments make a lot more sense than personal attacks and angry agenda-pushing.

Lock-out laws need review The strong lock-out laws that exist in the Sydney CBD and Kings Cross were in response to public outrage about tragic alcohol-fuelled incidents that needed government intervention.

However, we’re fooling ourselves if we think they’re actually working.

People in the know have told me for some time that all the lock-out laws have done is shift the problem to the suburbs, with people choosing to stay closer to home rather than heading into the city.

This theory is backed up by the State Government’s ‘Violent Venues List’ which saw suburban venues like the Peachtree Hotel in Penrith, the Crown Hotel in Parramatta, the Lone Pine Tavern in Rooty Hill and Fusion in Cronulla make their debuts on the list last year.

All the while, Sydney’s status as an international city suffers because the main CBD hot spots are under such heavy restrictions.

As much as it’s important that we tackle alcohol-fuelled violence, shifting the problem isn’t the answer.

Stricter compliance of RSA laws, more police on the streets and stronger patrolling of venues may be a far better approach than 1.30am lock-outs or closing bottle shops at 10pm.

Sydney needs a well thought out approach – not a knee-jerk one.

Council rejects Fernhill proposal but battle will continue DALE DRINKWATER

enrith Council has momentarily refused to slice up endangered bushland known as the Western Precinct of Fernhill Estate.

On February 9, an application from 2014 to subdivide 111 hectares of the property at 88 to 89 Nepean Gorge Drive, Mulgoa, into 11 rural-residential lots was rejected.

A Council spokesperson said the refusal was based on ecological grounds.

“The proposal was inconsistent with the relevant Local, State and Commonwealth planning instruments and the subdivision layout did not respond adequately to natural constraints,” he said.

“It was assessed as having an adverse impact on the local environment and therefore not in the public interest.”

However, the relief from groups such as the Mulgoa Progress Association may not last long.

The current Penrith Local Environment Plan restricts the site to be subdivided at a minimum of 10 hectare lots, but in September last year the property owners, Angas Securities, applied to rezone the land to allow two hectare lots.

“At the end of the day it’s going to go through the Gateway and it will allow a section of that land to be rezoned into two hectare lots, and they will then be able to subdivide,” he said.

Colyton: Man injured as duo rob bakery on Hewitt Street

St Clair: Men on the run after attempted robbery at KFC

Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a bakery in Colyton early on Tuesday morning.

At about 1.50am on Tuesday, February 16, a baker was working on Hewitt Street inside the bakery when he was disturbed by two men at the rear door.

One was armed with a firearm and the other with a knife, and both forced their way into the premises as they threatened the baker.

The men managed to steal a small amount of cash from the register.

While running out the back door they hit the baker over the head with a blunt object.

The baker was treated for a cut to his head.

A crime scene was established with police calling for any witnesses to come forward.

Police are still appealing for information following an attempted armed robbery at a fast food restaurant in St Clair.

Just before 9.30pm on Saturday, February 13, two armed men entered a fast food restaurant on Banks Drive in St Clair. One man, armed with a metal object, demanded money from a female employee before hitting her, police were told.

Both men left the scene empty handed.

They were last seen running on St Clair Avenue. The female employee was treated

by NSW Ambulance Paramedics on scene before being taken to Nepean Hospital.

A crime scene was established and an extensive search of the surrounding area was conducted. No one was located.

Inquiries into the matter are continuing.

Orchard Hills: Man drives van into dam; refuses to come out

South Penrith: Police officer punched by teenager

A man was arrested after he drove a van into a dam at Orchard Hills on Tuesday.

At about 3.45am, officers were travelling with their lights and sirens on to a report of a man attempting to steal a bobcat.

Near the intersection of Bradley Street and The Northern Road, Orchard Hills the officers saw a white Toyota van strike some debris in the road, travel through a fence and eventually stop in a dam.

The driver alighted from the vehicle and swam to the middle of the dam.

The man allegedly refused to come out of the water before police negotiation began and he eventually came out.

A man was charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer in South Penrith on Sunday.

At about 2.45am on Sunday, February 14, officers from Penrith Local Area Command spoke to three males and one female who were allegedly standing in the intersection of York Road and Maxwell Street.

It’s alleged one of the males, aged 18, assaulted the 35-year-old leading senior constable by punching him in the face.

The officer was taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment of a broken nose.

The arrested man was charged with an array of offences.

he intersection of Andromeda Drive and The Northern Road in Cranebrook is so bad that one family keeps a first aid kit handy in case people need help after an accident.

The Burns family live just three houses up from the dreaded intersection that claimed the life of 17-year-old Kieren Birks earlier this month.

“I’ve lost count of how many crashes and accidents there have been but the statistics from Council say around 17 accidents occurred after the give way sign had been put up and that was in an 18-month period,” Danielle Burns said.

“As bad as it sounds, I’m very grateful that we weren’t home when the accident happened last week as it would have been completely devastating.”

Her husband, Rick, is with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and in turn is first aid trained, as is Mrs Burns from being a teacher.

Their daughter is also first aid trained.

“If an accident has happened and we are home at the time then we respond,” Mrs Burns said.

Mr Burns addressed Council in August last year about the issue of the intersection and the need for a roundabout.

slow cars and trucks coming through the area, and if there was a roundabout at the intersection, I doubt last Monday’s accident would have happened or, if it did, I doubt he would have lost his life,” Mr Burns said.

“I knew if there was no action taken, then it wouldn’t be long until someone died. I was really angry, frustrated and upset when I heard the news.”

Mr Burns said that just 15 minutes after police re-opened the road after the fatal accident, the family heard a truck sounding its horn continuously at another car as the truck drove through the intersection.

“I just want to know how much blood it is going to take to build a roundabout at the intersection – I’m not blaming anyone but action needs to happen,” Mr Burns said.

A petition with almost 3000 signatures has also been launched following the accident.

Local residents remain angry that despite years of pleading for the intersection to be upgraded, and warning of the likelihood of a fatal accident, nothing has been done.

In the hours after the accident that killed Kieren Birks, Councillor Kevin Crameri asked for a report on whether the way the intersection is structured contributed to the accident.

Cr Crameri has long campaigned for major changes to the intersection.

aking the first step to a healthier life can be a daunting task but Cambridge Park resident Melissa Grimes will dive into the deep end when she enters her second Sydney Skinny swim next week.

The Sydney Skinny swim offers a 300 metre or 900 metre nude harbour swim and runs from Cobblers Beach in Middle Head.

Ms Grimes is taking up the challenge of the 900 metre swim after doing the 300 metre event last year.

“I’m definitely keen to do it this year as I’m less nervous than I was last year,” Ms Grimes told the Weekender.

“I was really nervous last year and I didn’t tell anyone I was doing it until the day, but everyone in my team is so supportive and they make it really fun.”

Ms Grimes has lost close to 60 kilos since starting her weight loss journey, having lost almost 40 kilos when she participated in last year’s event.

“I just made small changes at a time to my diet like cutting out soft drink and just generally eating healthier but I still have a long way to go,” Ms Grimes said.

Part of ‘Team Nudie’, captained by 2013 ‘Big Brother’ winner Tim Dormer last year, Ms Grimes said the event is a

Connecting youth with employment Unique program aims to link 100 local youths with a new career and a fresh start

bid to link 100 local youths with careers through apprenticeships received an unprecedented response from Penrith’s current and past students.

Apprenticeship Careers Australia (ACA) launched their 100 Jobs in 100 Hours campaign at Westfield Penrith last week, which aimed to fill 100 apprenticeship positions with young jobseekers.

The campaign resulted in nearly 200 face-to-face consultations, 170 job applications were filled, and 25 people turned up with their resumes ready to go – two even turned up in suits.

ACA NSW Manager, Luke Radford, said the campaign to engage with youth on their own turf was marked a success when a further 160 students and school leavers visited to just seek advice.

“We know there’s plenty of kids here, they’re just not applying and coming to our offices in Parramatta,” he said.

“We are trying to come to them and talk to them about the different roles that we do have going.”

However, not everyone who attended will end up with a job.

Work started yesterday on a proposal to install a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera at the intersection of Roper Road and Carlisle Avenue in Colyton to help improve travel times for motorists.

“The work is being conducted as part of the NSW Government’s $246 million Pinch Point Program, which aims to reduce traffic delays, manage congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s major roads, particularly during the weekday peak,” a Roads and Maritime spokesperson said.

“CCTV cameras provide valuable real time information on road and traffic conditions to motorists, and can help improve traffic flow by providing real time advice to traffic controllers at the Traffic Management Centre.

“The investigation work will include scanning, trenching and potholing to locate underground utilities and provide information on ground conditions.”

Work will be completed in two shifts, one held yesterday and another scheduled for Friday, February 26 between 8am and 5pm.

Roads and Maritime will make every effort to minimise the impact on local residents.

Changed traffic conditions including lane closures will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Man charged over 2013 crash at Erskine Park A man faced court yesterday after being charged in relation to a fail-to-stop crash at Erskine Park in 2013.

About 3.55am on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, a Toyota Corolla and Mitsubishi Lancer collided on Erskine Park Road.

The Corolla did not stop after the crash.

The driver of the Lancer, a now 62-yearold man, was assessed on-site by NSW

Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital. There, he underwent surgery for a broken pelvis and leg.

Inquiries by police attached to the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit have been ongoing.

On Tuesday, February 16, police from the Cabramatta Proactive Crime Team

arrested a 29-year-old man at a fitness centre in Fairfield.

Crash investigators subsequently charged the 29-year-old with ‘dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’ and ‘failing to stop and assist after a crash’.

He was refused bail and faced Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday over the incident.

CCTV camera for busy road

Hedge stops man A man is being dealt with by police by way of a future Court Attendance Notice for a mid-range PCA offence and several driving offences after he crashed into a hedge while trying to escape from police.

At about 11.55pm on Monday, February 15, police were patrolling along the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains when they came across a vehicle allegedly travelling a little too fast.

Police turned around to pull the vehicle over but the driver took off.

He lost control of his vehicle in Hunter Street in Emu Plains and crashed into a hedge. Police caught up with the man and breath tested him.

After a breath analysis at Penrith Police Station the man was given a future Court Attendance Notice.

False documents A man was arrested in a Penrith shopping centre after he allegedly produced some false documents to try and obtain a mobile phone.

At about 8.15pm on Thursday, February 11, the 43-year-old man attended a mobile phone store inside the shopping centre on High Street in Penrith.

The shop assistants became concerned with documents the man produced and contacted police.

The man, from St Marys, was arrested and charged with two counts of ‘dishonestly obtain benefit by deception’ and one count of ‘goods in custody’.

He has been sentenced and received a bond and a fine.

38 hectares of land secured to help boost critically endangered ecosystems

ong time advocate and champion for access issues, Councillor Jackie Greenow is unsatisfied with the plans for a major upgrade to Penrith Station.

Cr Greenow said the Penrith Station upgrade, which is part of the State Government’s Transport Access Program, lacks just that – access.

“I don’t think there’s enough there at all, and it’s a really simple solution,” she said.

At a meeting last week, Councillor Greenow and Councillor Marcus Cornish asked Council to pursue the provision of escalators and a ramp with Transport NSW. “Anybody could use a ramp but not everybody can use stairs. It’s difficult if you are a mum with a pram, and you can’t do it if you’re in a wheelchair,” she said.

Included in the plans are stairs and larger elevators, but Cr Greenow said elevators have proven to be problematic.

“I live in St Marys and the lift at St Marys Station was out for six months, and people could not get to the station,” she said.

Councillor Greenow said it’s a simple request to increase accessibility by installing at least a ramp.

However, Councillor Cornish wants to go that one step further, and believes Penrith commuters deserve escalators.

“If elevators were good enough, all Westfield centres would just have elevators. The flow patterns are wrong with elevators,” he said.

A spokesperson from the office of Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, pointed to the determination report from Transport for NSW, that outlines reasons why escalators would not work, including space and cost.

“A large area would be needed to allow for a compliant ramp and associated landings to achieve the required 1:14 grade, and this would not be feasible within the existing space,” the report said.

The spokesperson said the upgrades are to improve customer experience and increase capacity for future growth.

“The Penrith Station upgrade will provide replacement stairs and lifts to ensure improved access for customers and cater for the predicted patronage growth,” she said.

“The installation of 27 person capacity lifts is sufficient to cater for predicted patronage.”

n important parcel of land in Mulgoa has been established as the latest conservation corridor in western Sydney, linking the Cumberland Plains Woodland and Mulgoa Creek.

At least 38 hectares of endangered bushland beside Mulgoa Road has been secured by the Federal Government to help boost the resilience of critically endangered ecosystems.

Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, made the announcement at the property on Tuesday, alongside the Federal Government’s Green Army.

Mr Hunt said the Mulgoa Road property is a significant green corridor that will protect native bushland and ensure the

important long-term survival of plants and animals.

“The property contains intact native vegetation, including shale gravel transition forest which is listed as critically endangered under national environment law,” he said.

“The property also includes state listed threatened habitat and vulnerable species.”

The announcement is part of a commitment to restore or protect around 700 hectares of the Cumberland Plains Woodland through future land covenants, land acquisition and activities under the Green Army and the 20 Million Trees Program.

Mr Hunt said the $15 million election commitment will establish a Cumberland Conservation Corridor through three actions.

“First, applications have been opened

for grants to plant one million trees and rehabilitate 400 hectares within the Cumberland Conservation Corridor as part of the 20 Million Trees Program,” he said.

“Second, 15 Green Army teams will restore over 250 hectares of habitat in the Cumberland Conservation Corridor.

“Third, the remaining part of the 700 hectares will be placed under conservation covenants through Commonwealth purchases and this land will be held in public hands forever.”

Ms Scott said the acquisition of the Mulgoa Road property will make a significant contribution to conservation efforts.

“Preserving green urban spaces is an important step in connecting communities with the environment and making our growing cities more livable,” she said.

fter several setbacks in her career, 23-year-old netball star Paige Hadley has overcome adversary to be announced as Penrith’s 2016 Local Woman of the Year.

Since the age of seven, the St Clair resident has worked her way up the netball ranks to the world stage, but with an injury that left her temporarily unable to walk, it wasn’t an easy feat.

Just one game into debuting for Australia, Hadley had an accident that left her requiring a knee reconstruction, bringing her down physically, but also mentally.

“To have it pretty much taken from me was the hardest thing. I felt my world had just ended,” she said.

With the Netball World Cup just 18 months away, Hadley fought to get herself back on her feet.

“Physically, you have people around you to help you, but coming back mentally from an injury is the hardest part,” she said.

“But all the hard things you go through make the good things worth it. I wouldn’t have appreciated winning the World Cup as much without being out for 18 months.”

n the same way Penrith Council hopes to bridge future funding gaps through an increase in residents’ rates, they have bridged one of Penrith’s most popular paths.

The shared-use pathway along Jamison Road has a newly completed footbridge over Peach Tree Creek, which was funded through Council’s previous Special Rate Variation (SRV).

“This project was made possible through the SRV Council has in place to fund projects it would not otherwise

be able to,” said Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown.

“The use of SRV funds secured a matching grant from the RMS to fund the project, essentially doubling the reach of the plan to deliver a missing link from Penrith to the river.”

Cyclists and pedestrians now have safer access from Penrith to the river at Tench Reserve, and to the north-south path from Glenmore Park to Jane Street, Penrith.

Celebrating the opening of the shareduse path couldn’t come at a better time for Council to show the community how an SRV has provided infrastructure.

TAFE helping to fill trades shortage in west DALE DRINKWATER

he increasing demand for infrastructure, a focus on university education and a high drop out rate for apprentices has been blamed for a skills shortage in key western Sydney trades.

President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), Councillor Tony Hadchiti, said there is a need to look at how vocational education is valued.

“Too many of our youth believe that future opportunities can only come via a university education, which is simply not true,” he said.

“Just because a young person is capable of completing a university degree doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the best option for them or the community for that matter.

“First and foremost we need to have a change in thinking; to reassess the value we place on apprenticeships and traineeships.”

Head Teacher of Health at Western Sydney Institute of TAFE’s Nepean College, Sherryl Dismorr, said there are many high quality non-university career options.

“University doesn’t suit everybody, some people are hands on learners and

others like the more in depth theoretical study, TAFE provides an alternate route to consider than university,” she said.

“All our qualifications are skills based and come from a demand in the industry, and come and go depending on support from the industry.”

The recent Shaping Future Cities report predicted a long-term increase in demand for health services in western Sydney’s health sector, which is already the second largest provider of jobs in the region.

To prepare, Nepean TAFE will be opening a brand new state-of-the-art Dental Wing, Optical Dispensing and Audiometry facilities for health students.

The Dental Wing has four treatment chairs simulating a fully functional dental surgery with intraoral x-ray machines to give students skills to work as dental assistants.

Optical Dispensing students will have access to the same lens grinding machinery that is found in commercial businesses and Audiometry students can practice in soundproof private testing facilities.

Ms Dismorr said with Optical Dispensary, you can work in a practice or be selfemployed making lenses and fitting them to glasses, or with qualifications in Dental Assisting, you can work beside a dentist.

“You don’t need uni for that,” she said.

Penrith Council’s proposed rates rise is a Ponzi scam designed to impoverish MOST of the residents residing in Council’s jurisdiction. For goodness sake, imagine any responsible organisation increasing rates by more than one quarter over the next four years and then white washing this disgrace by suggesting that it was “all about maintaining good performance”.

It may be OK for the Councillors earning in the vicinity of $100,000 a year and further supplemented by their $26,000 Council wage, and by $76,000 in the case of Mayor McKeown. As a resident of Glenmore Park, my rates will increase by $480 over the four years. The figures presented by Council are pie in the sky averages, intended to mislead ratepayers.

They also FAIL to mention the recent Land Valuations which have increased

massively. In my case an increase of 47 per cent which will further increase rates over and above Council’s pie in the sky predictions. Renters will also be hit very hard, as landlords pass these rate rises on to their tenants. As a resident of Penrith for more than 40 years, I have not witnessed a more irresponsible rabble masquerading as elected representatives of Penrith ratepayers.

Through Government policy and on behalf of us there have been thousands of apprenticeships each year for rail, electricity, water, roads and hospitals. Governments are selling our skills and training off to their mates in the private sector to make profits.

Penrith resident Shane Gorman has been a volunteer at the Red Cross since November last year after wanting some experience in the industry when he began studying emergency management.

“The Red Cross is one of the best providers for this kind of emergency services training which works well for me because I really wanted to get involved with the organisation,” he said.

Mr Gorman said that helping people is all he has ever really wanted to do.

“Eventually I want to be managing disasters and crises and working on the ground overseas,” he said.

“The Red Cross gives me a great opportunity to be involved in any aspect I’m interested in and there is still plenty to do even if you’re not activated and out on the ground.

“You can do as many hours as you would like or as much as you can.”

A new policy on how Council will deal with complaints from residents about their neighbours’ animals has been passed. The Keeping of Animals Local Orders Policy applies to domestic animals, including poultry but excluding livestock, and is only enforced after a complaint is received.

The policy does not introduce any new restrictions, but is a guideline for

Council when determining an appropriate response after a complaint. For more information on the number of different types of animals allowed in a residential dwelling, visit Penrith Council’s website at www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au.

Consistency is key for Council’s Compliance and Enforcement Policy and Guidelines. The draft policy is to respond to allegations of unlawful activity that are contrary to development consent or undertaken without one, and not in line with environmental planning or legislation. In presenting the review of the policy to Councillors, Environmental Health Coordinator Anthony Price said under legislation, Council is required to carry out activities in a consistent manner, without bias. However, several Councillors questioned Council’s consistency, with one suggesting that future development applications be accompanied by a signed compliance document. The suggestion was squashed, and Council endorsed the draft policy as per the report with no changes.

Penrith Council has deferred making a decision on a draft policy that deals with requests from individuals and businesses to purchase Council owned land. The report to Council was to provide a fair and transparent way to consider these requests in three stages. Councillors raised some issues with the report presented, in that wording for the assessment process excludes Councillors until after the decision is already made. Councillor Bernard Bratusa said Councillors might have a different opinion on the future of the land.

“I want to see why it was rejected, what land and the detail. We are the ones that will be publicly flogged,” he said. Other Councillors said there are times when making information publicly available can be detrimental to the development. The draft policy was deferred pending further work.

fter defying the odds several times over his life, Penrith resident Jayden Bourke couldn’t be more excited to be the face of this year’s Bandaged Bear Appeal.

Eight-year-old Jayden hasn’t had it easy in his short life so far.

When she was eight months pregnant, Theresa Bourke was told to prepare for the worst.

Jayden’s vital organs weren’t developing properly and at first look, doctors couldn’t see any brain matter.

“I found out on the same day that I found out I was pregnant that the pregnancy might not be a viable one,” Ms Bourke explained.

“He didn’t have a brain, he had no kidneys, no bladder and no bowel.

“I was told I was going to have a medical termination but after more tests, they said they found some brain matter and to prepare myself for birth.”

His official diagnosis was spina bifida and the rare medical condition hydrocephalus, meaning water on the brain, leaving him paraplegic.

Jayden has proved the doctors wrong time and time again after having at least 30 medical procedures during his life so far.

Jayden Bourke Now he has been selected as this year’s Bandaged Bear Appeal Ambassador, run by the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

“I’m just so proud of him for doing this,” Ms Bourke said.

“There was no hesitation when we were asked because they have done so much for us, so it’s great to be able to give back in this way.”

Jayden attends Werrington Public School full-time and is currently recovering from a major operation he had on his legs last October.

Ms Bourke said donating to the Appeal could help several sick children.

very household in western Sydney will notice the adorable pet on the cover of their new 2016 Yellow Pages directory.

However, there’s a deeper story behind the happy dog, Normi, who has been saved from the pound and a possible death through national animal welfare charity, PetRescue.

The cover is a partnership between Yellow Pages and PetRescue, in an attempt to rehome some of the region’s most vulnerable family members.

Normi is just one example of the hundreds of pets who are up for adoption every week from PetRescue homes such as 38-year-old Vanessa Blazi’s Happy Tails in Glenmore Park.

“We go into a pound and we put a rescue hold on animals, and when their

impound time is up, a rescue group will take the animal and rehabilitate it,” Ms Blazi said.

“We get the animal vaccinated and micro-chipped and then try to rehome them.”

Ms Blazi said since joining her rescue home with PetRescue, it has been substantially easier to rehome animals to local families.

“For me it’s far more successful than social media, with PetRescue you have people that are actively looking for a certain type of dog,” she said.

PetRescue Director, Vickie Davy, said she hopes more Australians will discover the joys of welcoming a rescue pet into their lives and realise how easy it is to find their new best friend.

“We are incredibly excited by the level of support being provided from the Yellow Pages in raising awareness of this cause,” she said.

Turning back Time

Train tragedy rocked Emu Plains Photo: Penrith City Library

mu Plains was once the location of the biggest railway accident in New South Wales.

On the night of January 30, 1878, two locomotives were travelling on their normal routes, never to predict the harrowing events that were about to unfold.

One locomotive was a special goods train, with nine loaded trucks of kerosene shale that left Bowenfels, just south of Lithgow, heading for Sydney.

According to the Illustrated Sydney News in 1878, the train passed its regular stations at expected times, and arrived at the Blue Mountains station to be signalled that it was ‘all right’.

If there was any uncertainty, the stationmaster was required to telegraph the next

stop to see if the line was clear, before letting the train leave his station.

However, as the train was passing on the single track, the station-master called out to the guard on the train that he arrived too late.

The guard responded that he had ‘plenty of time for the plains’, and begun the train’s descent down the mountain.

Meanwhile, a goods train was ascending the Lapstone Hill from Emu Plains.

In the dark of night, the two engines hit.

The explosion was loud enough that the people of Penrith and Emu Plains were awoken and rushed out of their houses, and looked to the mountains.

What they saw were two trains in a fireball, casting an eerie glow over the mountain.

The force of the crash welded the locomotives together, which then rolled and

plunged over the embankment.

Both trains were hauling freight and took 35 carriages over the hill, crushing trees until it hit the bottom.

Four men were killed in the collision, including the drivers of both trains.

Responsibility for the deaths fell on the shoulders of the guard on the train from Bowenfels, who gambled that the down train would reach Emu Plains before the up train left Penrith.

However, many felt guilt should be directed at the top railway, which had fiddled with safety regulations, and created an atmosphere of uncertainty.

The tragedy could have been avoided if the minister responsible for rail at the time kept a certain safety code relating to single-track rail systems.

The regulations caused lengthy delays, but did prevent head on collisions.

It’s warming to see that even 16 years ago back in the year 2000, Penrith was celebrating the mix of cultures of people who call the area home. This image was taken in High Street, during the Penrith Valley Multicultural Festival in September of that year.

Our February 20, 2015 edition of the Weekender looked at the rivalry between western Sydney NRL teams Penrith and Parramatta.

Just like this weekend’s game between the two sides at Pepper Stadium, the Panthers fought to start the season strong.

The Weekender spoke with then captain Peter Wallace, who predicted the Eels would come out firing, with a point to prove after losing Jarryd Hayne to the NFL. “I think the rest of the boys will want to prove a point that they’re not a one man team and that they’re still going to be a force. I expect them to be full strength, it’ll be a pretty tough game,” he said.

And come in full force they did, when the Panthers suffered a 30-22 loss to the Eels.

Further inside the edition, we announced the beginning of the Werrington Arterial project, that is upgrading the busy Gipps Street in Werrington.

Now half way through, the $70 million project connects the Great Western Highway to the M4 Motorway, to reduce congestion.

Plus, it was this time last year when the Greyhound industry came under fire for allegations of illegal live baiting.

Two Peters, one hit show KATE REID

W

hen it comes to Australian musicals it doesn’t get much bigger than the role of Peter Allen in ‘The

Boy From Oz’.

Not only is it a physically demanding show – with ‘Peter’ dancing and singing on stage for several hours – it’s a role that has been linked to big name stars including Todd McKenney and Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman.

This May the Penrith Musical Comedy Company will present their production of this hit show at the Q Theatre.

The role of Peter Allen will be shared by two local performers, 13-year-old Luke Zoglmeyer, who will play the young Peter Allen; and Robert Hall, who will play the adult Peter Allen.

“It’s daunting really,” Robert laughed when asked how he felt about taking on such an iconic character.

The star of previous Penrith Musical Comedy Company productions, ‘Avenue Q’, ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Hairspray’, admits that the role will be challenging but rewarding.

“To be able to replicate some of the greats, it’s quite a privilege”

“It does mean a lot to me because I’ve been performing my whole life, so to be able to somehow replicate some of the greats, it’s quite a privilege,” he said.

While Robert has been performing for years, this will be Luke’s debut musical role.

“My friend from my dance studio’s nan is involved with the Penrith Musical Comedy Company and she told me about the auditions, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to have a go,” he said.

“I haven’t been involved with any plays, but I have been doing musical theatre classes at my dance school.”

With lots of excitement, and a few nerves, Luke is hoping this role will be the start of a long musical theatre career.

“That’s my dream, to be in musicals,” he said.

‘The Boy From Oz’ originally premiered in 1998, with Todd McKenney in the role of Peter Allen.

In 2003 it became the first Australian musical to make it to Broadway, earning Hugh Jackman a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

The show tells the story of the Aussie performer’s extraordinary life including his meeting with Judy Garland, his marriage to her daughter Liza Minnelli, his Oscar win, his coming out and his death from an AIDS related illness.

But of course the main focus is the music that made Peter Allen a star all over the world.

‘The Boy From Oz’ includes all his greatest hits such as ‘I Still Call Australia Home’, ‘I Go To Rio’, ‘I Honestly Love You’ and ‘Tenterfield Saddler’.

The Penrith Musical Comedy Company has produced more than 60 musicals since its formation in 1978.

The company has not only offered opportunities to local performers and theatre makers, but it has also given western Sydney audiences the chance to experience the magic of the musical in our own backyard.

et a taste of Australia’s very own ‘Magic Mikes’ when Sydney Hotshots head our way this March.

hakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ will get a ‘Bachelor’ style twist in The Acting Factory’s interpretation of the comedy classic which premieres later this month.

From Friday, February 26, the beautiful Regatta Park on the Nepean River will become the stage for this local production directed by Winsome Barker.

‘The Taming of the Shrew’ is a story of love, expectations and gender roles, but this time the play will be presented as a Bachelor-style reality show, where all the female roles will be played by men and all the male roles by women.

In a time when gender equality is being discussed more than ever, this bold new interpretation will have audiences questioning the way in which we see traditional gender roles.

With plenty of laughs, and a refreshing new take on a classic story, The Acting Factory’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ is set to be a lovely night of theatre in the great outdoors.

The Acting Factory grew out of Richard Brooks’ Three Stage School of Acting, which in turn grew out of the original Q Theatre run by Doreen Warburton.

A Shakespeare workshop program in 1998 led by Brooks for Q Theatre and Three Stage graduates gave rise to an ambitious, finely-tuned production entitled ‘Shakespeare, No Holds Bard’.

To publicise the performances the group needed a name and, since Three Stage was housed in a factory unit in South Penrith, the name The Acting Factory was coined.

The Acting Factory presents ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ by William Shakespeare at Regatta Park, Emu Plains on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 8pm from Friday, February 26 to Sunday, March 13. In case of rain, all performances will transfer to Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School.

Ê There’s set to be a new player in the streaming market with the announcement that Hayu – a reality TV-only streaming service – will launch next month.

While Netflix, Presto and Stan are predominantly focused on scripted TV, docos and movies, Hayu will be all about reality TV. Some of the programs at launch will include: ‘The Real Housewives’, ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’, ‘I am Cait’, ‘Million Dollar Listing’, ‘Top Chef’ and ‘The Million Dollar Matchmaker’.

Whitey is living a life far removed from his brother Bill, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a Massachusetts state senator, until FBI agent John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton, approaches him to help out the good guys by taking down the Italian mob, an enemy common to both Whitey and the FBI. But their alliance doesn’t go to plan

as the ruthless Whitey manages to evade the law and gain more power.

This true story makes for great subject material and once again Johnny Depp – aka the master of disguise – is almost unrecognisable as the balding Whitey.

‘Black Mass’ has earned a positive critical reception, with film review site Rotten Tomatoes describing this as Depp’s most compelling performance in recent years.

If you love ‘based on a true story’ mobster crime thrillers then ‘Black Mass’ is definitely worth checking out.

It’s rated MA 15+ and is definitely one for the adults of the house when the kids are tucked away for the evening.

Wade adopts the alter ego of Deadpool and with his new skills, and a very twisted sense of humour, he attempts to find the man who ruined his life.

The film has been met with a positive critical reception and has been praised for its comedic elements, making Deadpool a fun new addition to the Marvel film franchise.

If you’re a Deadpool fan this will already be on your list of movies to see, but even those who haven’t yet delved into the world of Marvel are likely to enjoy the humour and fun of this unexpected superhero flick.

Enjoy Breakfast with the Birds!

elebrate World Wetlands Day 2016 with breakfast accompanied by bird song at the Nepean River, Penrith’s most important wetland area.

‘Breakfast with the Birds’, hosted by Penrith City Council in conjunction with the Blue Mountains Bird Observers Club, will be held on Saturday, February 27 and Saturday, March 5 at 8am.

Join local bird expert, Mark Fuller to find out more about the special native birds that live by the river as well as how to spot and protect them.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the event will also celebrate the region’s fauna and flora.

“Find out about the special native birds that live by the river, how to spot them and what you can do to help protect them and their habitats,” Cr McKeown said.

‘Breakfast with the Birds’ is open to all ages and is suitable for most fitness levels, being on a level path along the River.

‘Breakfast with the Birds’ will be held at Weir Reserve, Penrith on February 27, and March 5 both from 8am. Bookings are essential as places are limited, so telephone 4732 8055.

Made from fruit off vines growing on their own roots in the red volcanic soil of the Broke region, rather than having been grafted onto other stock, this is a great early-drinking style vino whose vibrant fruit and subtle use of oak is nicely rounded out with savoury characters and a good balance of its spicy characteristics.

Best summed up as a medium bodied, softer fruit-driven style with subtle integrated oak, it’s drinking excellently now but has all the indications of being a drop with great aging potential.

Well priced at $25, you’ll find this 2014 Margan Hunter Valley Merlot a great match with tomato-based pasta or other tomato-based Italian dishes, with beef, pork or chicken barbecues… and as a mate does, a fantastic base for rich red wine sauces.

One to note: Pipers Brook on Tasmania’s north-east coast, Australia’s coolest and southernmost wine region, has released a stunner of a Gewurztraminer from 40-year-old vines that are amongst the lowest-yielding of any Australian vineyard region – but of absolutely exceptional flavour and character.

And while this wine’s from a 2015 vintage that was somewhat bumpy with a windy and warmer than usual winter and spring and a mild and occasionally damp summer, the result is a drop with a wonderful palate of gingerbread confection, quince paste and lime/citrus, coupled with a fruit sweetness that’s intense but at the same time balanced by low natural residual sugar.

At some point most businesses will go through the deflating experience of being refused finance. Keep in mind that banks do want to lend money, but it’s in no one’s interest to approve a loan that may have difficulties being repaid.

As a Bank Manager myself, I’ve seen the best and worst versions of business loan applications so I thought I would share with you some tips on how you can present your business loan application in the best light possible.

Explain what you want to borrow and why

Rather than asking to borrow a yet to be agreed amount for an unknown investment, demonstrate how you plan to use the borrowed funds. Have a business plan and outline your business direction, growth prospects and profit forecasts.

Are you creditworthy?

Have all your paperwork up-to-date and in order.

Have your BAS and personal

taxes done. Have your bank statements and accounting documentation such as cash flow statements and balance sheets available. Understand the key financial figures of your business e.g. current income, net profit, expenses.

If you need some help understanding these, discuss them with your accountant before applying for your loan.

Demonstrate how you will pay the loan back Ideally your business can show a few years of profit and this coupled with future profit forecasts shows you can afford the loan repayments.

While we always hope that loans are repaid as the borrower intends, it doesn’t hurt to show your lender a worst-case scenario e.g. if something like technology changes, new competitors or an industry down turn stopped your business in its tracks – would the sale of the business or other assets cover the loan expenses?

As a parent I’ve always suspected that swimming has helped my children in other areas, however there is now scientific evidence to support my assumption.

Research conducted by Griffith University over four years has concluded that children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children.

During the project, entitled “Early Years Swimming, Adding Capital to Young Australians”, researchers surveyed parents of 7000 children aged five-years-old and under

from Australia, New Zealand and the US. The Australian component included observing more than 120 swimming lessons in 40 swim schools nationwide. Parents reported back on their children’s development and the information was weighed against the expected progression of children through established milestones. To overcome inevitable parental bias, a core

group of 176 three, four and five-year-old children was involved in a more intensive assessment process using internationally approved testing methods.

The study indicates that swimming children have many advantages when starting school.

Lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said: “While we expected the children to show better physical development and perhaps be more confident through swimming, the results in literacy and numeracy really shocked us. The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in maths, counting, language and following instructions”.

Professor Jorgensen said that as well as achieving physical milestones faster, the swimming children scored significantly better in visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring in and drawing lines and shapes: “On average, these children were 11 months ahead of the normal population in Oral Expression, six months ahead in Maths Reasoning and two months ahead in Brief Reading. Most amazing was the difference in Story Recall (17 months ahead)”.

The class action concept is well depicted in the famous Australian film ‘The Castle’ and in the American film ‘Erin Brockovich’.

Australia has its own history of large class action cases. Following the devastating 2009 Victoria bushfires in which 119 people died and over 1,000 homes were destroyed, a class action on

behalf of 10,000 survivors was launched. The basis of the class action was that a faulty electricity cable being maintained by power distributor SP AusNet & Utility Services Group caused the fire, and as a result the fire’s victims should be entitled to compensation.

The class action resulted in a $500 million payout, which makes this class action one of the biggest settlements in Australian legal history.

In 2010, a class action was launched on behalf of hundreds of thousands of bank customers against the Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac and NAB on the basis that these banks were charging fees ranging from a few dollars to $45 for things like ‘Account Overdraw Fees’ or ‘Late Payments’ without having the consent or agreement of the customer.

In 2014, Australia’s Federal Court ruled that these charges were in some cases exorbitant, particularly in the case of the ANZ Bank.

In 2015, the ANZ Bank won the right to appeal this decision to the High Court of Australia. Whatever the eventual decision of the Court is, it will set an important precedent in determining other class actions that have been launched against other lenders.

Rabbits are herbivores, meaning that they eat plants.

It is recommended that their diets consist of high quality hay, fresh grass and chopped leafy vegetables.

Most commercially available rabbit mixes lack sufficient fibre for a rabbit’s nutritional needs. These mixes contain food that are not found in a rabbit’s natural diet and can cause life threatening dental and gastrointestinal disease.

Rabbits also need regular vaccinations against calicivirus – this is a fatal virus that can cause bleeding and sudden death.

Rabbits make wonderful pets, and good housing and diet will ensure they have a long and happy life.

Nutrition labelling can be a great source of information about the foods you consume, but it can also be very confusing if you don’t know what to look for.

While you don’t need to get too obsessive about checking all the nutrition information for every product you purchase, there are a few things to look out for that can help you make healthier choices during your next trip to the supermarket.

One piece of information that you’ll want to look out for is serving size. Servings can often be misleading, and

By consulting the serving size suggestion at the top of the nutrition information panel, you’ll know roughly how much of the food to eat.

This also gives an indication of how many kilojoules the product contains. If the serving size suggestion is small that means the food has a higher energy density

and should be consumed in smaller portions.

Another helpful thing to look out for is the % of daily intake column. Now I want to preface this tip by saying that everyone’s nutrient requirements are different, depending on weight, gender, age etc, so this should only be used as a rough guide.

But it can be helpful to know approximately how much this food is contributing to your overall intake.

Factoring this percentage into your daily meals and snacks will help keep you from consuming more energy than you need.

Another thing to look out for, particularly when deciding between similar products, is the per 100g column, which can help you identify foods that are higher in key nutrients – like fibre, calcium and iron – and lower in fat, sugar, sodium and energy content. This will help you identify the more nutritious choices when deciding on a range of packaged foods like cereals, breads and sauces.

Of course some of the most nutrient rich foods – like vegetables and fruits – don’t have nutrition labelling.

Stock up on veges and fruits, add in a variety of nutritious processed foods and a few treats, and you’ll be on track to a healthy, balanced diet.

ompetition points may not be on the line but there’s no doubt that there will be plenty to play for when arch NRL rivals Penrith and Parramatta do battle on Saturday.

Penrith fans will get their first glimpse of new recruit Trent Merrin while crosstown rivals Parramatta will also debut a number of their new stars including Kieran Foran and Beau Scott as well as former Panthers Michael Jennings and Michael Gordon.

For Panthers supporters, however, all eyes will be on 26-year-old Merrin – who is the club’s marquee signing for 2016 – as well as some familiar faces including much talked about halves (and halves in waiting) Jamie Soward, Peter Wallace, Matt Moylan and Te Maire Martin.

Moylan, Martin and Wallace made their 2016 debuts last weekend during Penrith’s narrow 24-20 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs, while Merrin and Soward were in Brisbane with the Indigenous and World All Stars sides.

During Penrith’s four point win over the Bulldogs, Peter Wallace enjoyed a successful 20 minute return from a knee reconstruction before being replaced in the halves by new captain Matt Moylan, who also showed plenty of potential in the position.

But perhaps the star of last week’s opening trial was new recruit Te Maire Martin who was sensational in his 60 minute stint with some exciting plays and even a try which showed off not only his speed but his incredible footwork.

Apart from a few highlights, the game was rather scrappy with both sides utilising extensive squads to figure out positions and test out new combinations.

In some unfortunate news, however, the Panthers will be missing Kiwi centre Dean Whare this weekend with a mild calf strain while winger George Jennings will be sidelined until Round 3 after suffering an AC joint injury.

NRL kick off is at 7.10pm this Saturday night at Pepper Stadium.

The match will be broadcast live by Fox Sports.

ith the footy season right around the corner, what better way to kick off the year’s festivities than with a special luncheon in support of the Men of League Foundation.

The Men of League Penrith committee will be holding their 2016 Season Launch and Luncheon next month to not only celebrate the start of the rugby league season but to support the great people of the game who are doing it tough.

The event will take place at St Marys Rugby League Club and will feature a two-course lunch and drinks plus a special appearance by former Roosters and Eels player John ‘Bomber’ Peard and a panel of experts including Kevin Kingston and Mark Hughes.

President of Men of League Penrith, Alex McKenzie, said the event will be a great entry into the 2016 NRL season.

“We’ll have John Peard and a panel of experts chatting about the teams to watch and players to shine in 2016,” he said.

“John is a really good speaker and he’s very popular at the Men of League events in the eastern suburbs, so it’ll be great to have him out this way.

ompeting in one of their first major competitions as a group, Sydney West Martial Arts has taken home nine medals, including three gold, at a recent Brazilian Jiu Jitsu event in Sydney.

The Penrith-based gym has only been in the area for 18 months but is already proving to be one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts training facilities in town for men, women and children.

The gym’s owner and head instructor, Luke Martin, said he was proud of the efforts of all 15 Sydney West Martial Arts competitors who took part in the February

7 event, hosted by Grappling Industries.

“We had 12 adults and three kids competing, which is a really good achievement considering we’re fairly new,” Martin said.

“We had people compete in the Masters age group as well as children and middle aged women – it was a really good range of students who all did really well.”

All up the group took home three gold, five silver and one bronze medal in a range of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu categories.

Since Martin, a recent black belt in the sport, moved his services from Seven Hills to north Penrith 18 months ago, the business has gone from strength to strength.

“When we first opened there were three people… fast forward to now we consistently have 20-25 every night,” he said.

Rugby League Former Weekender journo gets his break in film world NATHAN TAYLOR

lenmore Park resident Heath Davis, 37, has gone from writing about entertainment in the local newspaper to well and truly creating it.

The former Western Weekender journalist is the writer and director of upcoming Australian sports drama ‘Broke’, starring Steve Bastoni and Brendan Cowell.

The film, which is getting rave reviews due to its topical themes, is about an aging rail worker named Cec, who finds his former footy hero turned washed up gambling addict Ben ‘BK’ Kelly passed out late one evening and decides to take him in.

Through the love and support of Cec and his single parent daughter Terri, BK finally finds the courage he was once famous for on the field, off it, to tackle his demons head on and ultimately win back the respect of the community he let down.

Speaking with the Weekender, Mr Davis said his inspiration for the film came from living and working in and around Penrith.

“I had the idea for a long time, it was about growing up around Penrith and seeing legends on the weekend playing rugby league and then seeing them again

during the week at local pubs gambling,” he said.

“That idea was in my head for quite a while and it just became more and more topical that I had to write a script on it.”

While working at the Weekender from the late 90s to mid-2000s, Mr Davis wrote predominantly about local entertainment while dabbling in sport and general news.

But in between his time at the Weekender offices and Western Sydney University, Mr Davis was busy becoming an award winning filmmaker.

“When I left uni I made a short film called ‘Spoon Man’ which did really well at big festivals. I also wrote a number of scripts and sold them off,” Mr Davis said.

“I made ‘Broke’ like I made my short films – I used my crew mates and casted the right actors. We crowdfunded half of it, and it was a beautiful experience from day one because everyone was really passionate about it.”

‘Broke’ will have its world premiere in Queensland – where the film was made – this April before heading south to Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

“The Sydney premiere will be at the Randwick Ritz before screening at Glenbrook Cinema in May,” Mr Davis said.

“Sydney FC is always a special game, we’ve performed very well twice [this year] without getting a result but we get another chance now,” Popovic said.

Rising star Yeo signs new Panthers deal

Legend praises new courts

Utility Isaah Yeo has signed a threeyear contract extension with the Penrith Panthers.

The new deal will see the 21-year-old remain with the Panthers until at least the end of the 2019 season.

“Penrith has been my home since I was 17 so to be able to continue to represent the club is something I’m very proud of,” Yeo said.

“I’d like to thank Anthony Griffin and Phil Gould for showing faith in me and allowing me to sign a new deal before the season has kicked off.

“I believe the future of this club is extremely bright so to be able to be involved with it and share it with some of my best mates is something I’m very excited about.”

Having grown up in Dubbo, Yeo first joined the Panthers in 2011. After a season of SG Ball he progressed into the NYC competition and was a member of the club’s premiership-winning NYC team in 2013.

At age 19, Yeo made his NRL debut in Round 1 of the 2014 season.

“It has been wonderful to watch Isaah’s development since he first joined our club years ago,” Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould said.

“I honestly believe Isaah will be a longterm NRL player with the Panthers and a representative talent in the future.”

Yeo has played 31 NRL games for the Panthers so far.

ustralian tennis legend Ken Rosewall joined Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown on Monday afternoon to unveil the first four upgraded courts at Woodriff Gardens Tennis Complex.

In construction since late last year, the $1.3 million project was funded by Penrith Council along with contributions from Tennis Australia and the NSW Government through its Community Building Partnerships Program.

“These new courts will be the envy of all other tennis associations,” Cr McKeown said.

“The new surface is a rubberised acrylic surface that will have the same playing characteristics as the courts used in the recent Australian Open.

“I’m excited that such an iconic figure in Australian tennis, Ken Rosewall, is here in Penrith and can see the work that Council is doing to promote the game.”

The new playing surface is produced by Mapei, with the courts in Penrith being the first to use this product in NSW. Speaking exclusively with the Weekender, 81-year-old Rosewall said the new

“The surface is recognised by Tennis Australia, so there’s no doubt there will be an opportunity to stage more events,” the eight-time Grand Slam singles champion said.

CEO, Chris Woodland, was delighted for the local tennis community.

“It’s a fantastic outcome for the whole community of Penrith to have a state-ofthe-art facility like this for players to play on,” he said.

“It’s also great to have a legend like Ken Rosewall involved, he was more than happy to come out and help.”

Tuff Turf, the contractor responsible for the project, is on track to deliver the next four courts by month’s end.

CRICKET: Penrith have continued their impressive mid-season form by defeating Hawkesbury in Round 12 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition at Howell Oval.

Hawkesbury went into Day 2 sitting on 8/225 before Penrith managed to dismiss them in 99.5 overs for 268.

Young gun Jake Wholohan 3/48 and Max McNamara 3/56 were the best of the bowlers for Penrith.

When Penrith hit the crease later that morning, they reached Hawkesbury’s total with five wickets to spare scoring 5/269. Penrith’s opening batsman John DiBartolo was on fire for the home side with 100 runs.

The second-placed Cats will now head to Glenn McGrath Oval this Saturday morning to take on the 10th-placed Sutherland in Round 13.

BASEBALL: After enjoying a weekend off due to representative fixtures, Penrith will take on arch rivals Baulkham Hills in Round 18 of the NSW State Baseball competition this Sunday.

A win over Baulkham Hills in the final round will see the reigning premiers advance to the post-season for the second straight year.

LEAGUE: Round 1 of the NSWRL Junior Representative season got underway last weekend with good results for Penrith’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams.

In the SG Ball competition, Penrith hammered Balmain 36-16 while in the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith and Balmain played out a hard fought 18-all draw.

This Saturday Penrith will take on the Newcastle Knights in both grades at Pepper Stadium.

AFL: Greater Western Sydney Giants coach Leon Cameron has signed a contract extension that will see him lead the club until at least the end of 2018.

The 43-year-old originally signed with the Giants for the 2013 season as senior assistant coach for one year under Kevin Sheedy before stepping into the role as Head Coach in 2014.

He led the Giants to six wins in his first season and 11 victories in 2015.

While much of the talk before the game was surrounding crowd behaviour, the play on the field took many by surprise with the lowly Wellington Phoenix knocking the Wanderers off their perch with a 5-2 thrashing.

It was a freakish evening for Western Sydney who conceded five goals for the first time in their short history.

Missing their full complement of Spaniards, the Wanderers were stunned by Wellington’s Blake Powell who scored a rapid first half hat trick before getting his fourth midway through the second half.

Western Sydney’s Mitch Nichols and Mark Bridge made things more respectable with a goal each but any chances of a remarkable comeback were extinguished when Jonathan Aspropotamitis was dismissed for bringing down former Wanderer Kwabena Appiah in the box.
