Go-slow zone frustrates motorists Drivers forced to slow down to 80km/h on M4 but there’s rarely any evidence of roadworks JADE ALIPRANDI

t’s the 80km/h roadwork zone without any roadwork – or so it seems.

Motorists travelling along the M4 Motorway have been slowed to 80km/h through Claremont Meadows for months, but there’s very little evidence of any roadwork actually taking place.

The stretch of road in question affects both citybound and westbound traffic, and is often monitored by police looking to catch speeding drivers.

The roadworks are in place as part of the Werrington Arterial Road project.

The $70 million Werrington Arterial Road upgrade began on March 9, 2015, almost two years ago.

The project forms part of a joint $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, that will create thousands of jobs, slash travel times for motorists and help grow the local economy.

But while motorists understand slowing down in roadwork zones, it’s becoming more and more frustrating to drop speeds for no obvious reason.

However, a Roads and Martime spokesperson said safety is the reason the reduced speed limit is in place.

“The speed limit was reduced on a section of the M4 Motorway to ensure the safety of road users and workers on the Werrington Arterial Road project,” the spokesperson said.

“Work being carried out includes building a new shared pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the motorway, on and off-ramps to the M4, electrical, water, and telecommunications utility work and landscaping.”

Because concrete barriers have been installed alongside the M4, the 80km/h zone needed to be implemented.

“Under Australian Standards concrete barriers should not be placed within a work zone when the sign posted speed is 110km/h, therefore a speed reduction to 80km/h is required,” the spokesperson said.

“The concrete barriers are placed for less than 1.5 kilometres in each direction and will remain in place until the project is completed early this year.”

Meanwhile, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has signalled the State Government will consider reducing charges for motorists on the new WestConnex motorway, including a toll-free period on the first section that is due to open this year.

Gladys does right by the party Gladys Berejiklian was at pains to point out that her new Cabinet is based on merit, not internal party politics.

But the new NSW Premier is fooling nobody.

There are some fine appointments in the mix, but the truth is that this is a case of Berejiklian doing right by the Coalition, not necessarily the State.

Those who know State politics know that so many powerbrokers and key factional players have made their way into Cabinet and into key positions.

Anyone who thinks Berejiklian sits down with her key advisors and appoints MPs to Cabinet based solely on merit and experience is kidding themselves.

For Berejiklian, her Cabinet now faces an enormous test – deliver, or be exposed as being not up to the job and simply a puppet to factions and party hacks.

One appointment that does make sense is that of Stuart Ayres to the Western Sydney and WestConnex portfolios (he’ll also maintain Sport).

Ayres is passionate about the west, and now has the opportunity to advocate for its fair share from a better position.

A final word on ‘changing the date’ Australia Day is gone for another year and with it goes the annual debate about whether or not the January 26 celebration should be moved because of the offence it causes to our Indigenous population.

This year, however, it seemed the topic gained much more traction than usual – and unfortunately things turned ugly when some dim-witted protesters started burning the Australian flag, prompting things to turn violent.

Personally my Australia Day was spent with friends and family – a few beers, a BBQ and a celebration of the fact that we live in the best country on the planet.

And I don’t feel guilty about it, either.

Like most years, I spent some time last Thursday reflecting about what happened on January 26, 1788.

We should never, ever forget our nation’s history or what occurred a couple of centuries ago – it is a very important part of our past.

But the ‘change the date’ campaign is misinformed and misguided.

Changing the date would not only not change the past, but it’d most likely see us stop reflecting on the importance of the date.

Holding Australia Day on January 26 may indeed mean plenty of us have a few drinks and a BBQ, but it also means we reflect and remember the atrocities the Indigenous population encountered back in 1788 and the years that followed.

Mundine a disgrace Anthony Mundine’s refusal to stand for the National Anthem at his fight with Danny Green tonight is childish and proof that he’s a first class wanker.

But his racial slur against Jessica Mauboy was disgraceful.

“They are just using her because she is black,” Mundine ranted.

Can you imagine the outcry if a middle aged white man said that?

Where are all the bleeding hearts calling Mundine to account?

Our obsession with the anthem angle to this story has completely overshadowed the racism that Mundine himself has displayed.

We reflect and remember better than ever before – with traditional ceremonies and strong recognition of the Indigenous population at all official Australia Day festivities and events.

Moving the date would simply move the party, but fail to retain the strong and respectful recognition of the Indigenous community that goes with it.

That recognition would be left on January 26 and the vast majority of the population would simply let the date slip by without remembrance.

As for those who protested so loudly, both on the streets and on social media last week, I can only suggest making a donation to one of the many very good organisations that work to improve the education, lifestyle and future of Aboriginal people.

I assure you, that’ll have a much better long-term result than parading around like a maniac urging us to change a date in the calendar.

weatherboard house was destroyed by fire in Kingswood on Monday night.

Multiple calls were made to 000 just after 7pm following reports of the fire on Parker Street.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said nine crews were dispatched.

A

“When firefighters arrived, the house was already well alight,” the spokesperson said.

While firefighters worked at getting the fire under control, the roof collapsed due to the extent of the fire leading to a close shave for two firies.

“There were a couple of searches through the house before the roof collapsed and it was given the all clear,” the spokesperson said.

No one was found to be home, and no rescue workers were injured in the effort to bring the fire under control.

Police had road closures in place along Parker Street while fire fighters fought to contain the blaze.

Surrounding properties were also checked for any smoke damage and were found to have sustained none.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by police.

ulgoa MP Tanya Davies has had a difficult initiation into her job as Minister for Women, coming under fire for her pro-life stance during a press conference in which she was asked about abortion issues.

“Personally I am pro-life... but in my role I am there to support all women and I will support all women, and I will listen to all women and I will take on board all the stakeholders’ comments and feedback ... and ensure the best outcome for all women is secured,” Ms Davies said at the press conference on Monday, held after she was sworn in as a Minister.

A rather tense moment followed when Ms Davies was asked if there was anything she would like to change about the abortion process in NSW. “At the moment I’m waiting for a brief and I’m going to get my head around the brief in my three portfolio areas as fast and as speedily as I can and begin the process of discussing a range of matters with stakeholders and coming to a decision,” she said.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian then stepped in, stressing that there was no policy change in relation to abortion issues.

Speaking with the ABC, Claire Pullen from the Women’s Electoral Lobby said the overwhelming majority of people in New South Wales are pro-choice.

Ms Davies is also likely to be scrutinised over her lack of support for same-sex marriage.

“I stand for traditional marriage between one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others for life,” Ms Davies told the Weekender last year.

“This foundational platform of our society has stood for thousands of years spanning across societies, cultures, beliefs and governments. It is a proven structure for a stable society and the right structure within which to raise and nurture children.”

Ayres, Davies pick up Cabinet roles JADE ALIPRANDI

Representing Mulgoa for just shy of six years, Ms Davies is also now the Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Women and Minister for Ageing.

Ms Davies told the Weekender she is excited to have been asked to join Cabinet.

“I look forward to being a strong advocate for people throughout Mulgoa, western Sydney and throughout our State in my substantial portfolio areas,” she said.

“All of these areas have a direct impact on our communities.

“Mental health continues to remain a top priority for our Government; I will always champion the needs of the elderly in NSW, in recognition of their work and service in our communities; and while we have made significant advances for women, I recognise it’s fundamental that the challenges in society, at home and in the workplace that face women continue to be adequately represented.”

Ms Davies added that having several western Sydney Ministers in Cabinet is a great thing for the region.

Meanwhile, Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has retained his position as Minister for Sport, and was given two new portfolios including Western Sydney and the newlyestablished WestConnex portfolio.

Mr Ayres is no longer the Minister for Tourism and Major Events.

“It’s a huge privilege and honour to serve in Cabinet in any position and I’m very, very happy to receive the call asking to serve in this Cabinet,” Mr Ayres said.

Mr Ayres’ new portfolios means his key focus will be on western Sydney.

“I’m proud to represent western Sydney in my new portfolios – it’s a hugely important economic and social region for the State,” he said.

“I’m now responsible for the largest infrastructure project in Australia at the moment in WestConnex and it’s a huge task but I’m happy to be doing it.”

Mr Ayres congratulated Ms Davies on her appointment.

“I’m really happy for her, she’s a great local member and a hard worker, and she will now have the opportunity to grow and mature in this new role,” he said.

More parking A 240 space temporary car park at Thornton has been constructed by Penrith City Council and opened on Tuesday.

The car park is on the north side of the railway line on an UrbanGrowth NSW site at Thornton (east of the existing commuter deck).

A further 200 parking spaces were provided in Thornton in December when Penrith Council temporarily removed four-hour and two-hour parking restrictions. These spots (on both sides of Lord Sheffield Circuit and on the southern side of Thornton Drive from Combewood Avenue) are now all-day parking.

The temporary car park will provide much needed relief during construction work on the upgrade of the Penrith Train Station, which is expected to take up to a year to complete.

In the past two months (December 2016 and January 2017) calls to 1800RESPECT have increased by over 30 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Since August last year, the number of calls answered by 1800RESPECT has increased by 410 per cent and the average time callers have to wait to speak to a counsellor has decreased by 95 per cent.

A new counselling service model was introduced last year.

Dropouts leave big debts behind A quarter of WSU students don’t complete their degrees EMILY NEWTON

ustralia’s university dropout rate is getting worse, with a new study from the Department of Education showing one in three students will fail to complete the course they began within six years of enrolling.

Western Sydney University (WSU) has the lowest completion rate in the Sydney region with only 73.7 per cent of the university’s 2006 intake completing their degrees over nine years.

However, WSU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Denise Kirkpatrick, said the data ignores a lot of crucial information.

“Overall, in terms of students completing their degree within nine years, Australia ranks third in OECD countries,” she said.

“Western Sydney University’s completion rates over nine years are on par with the national average.”

Professor Kirkpatrick said the statistics oversimplify a complex issue.

“Over 40 per cent of offers made by the University are to non school leavers,” she said.

“As a result, these students are managing a range of competing demands on their time from work to family commit-

An independent review of the Higher Education Loan Scheme last year showed that the government is continuing to lose money through the HELP system.

Currently, 21.8 per cent of new loans taken out are unlikely to be repaid because the borrower either earns too little or has moved overseas.

The government currently has $52 billion in HELP loan debts outstanding.

Man who stole phone showed regret and remorse

A man implicated in a robbery has been hit with a good behaviour bond and fine after making efforts to return one of the stolen items.

Robert Steadman, 30, faced Penrith Local Court last Friday for sentencing.

The court heard the father-of-three displayed deep contrition for his actions and obtained and returned the victim’s mobile phone within days of the offence.

He also made “significant” admissions to police when arrested and told them where his co-accused were.

In his submissions, Mr Steadman’s lawyer said his client “feels terrible about what happened” and pointed out he had not re-offended since the offence.

Magistrate Stephen Corry noted that within two days of the crime, the accused returned the mobile phone which was stolen from the victim, acknowledging that this was the item the victim had pleaded with the offenders not to take because it contained sentimental photographs.

He said in the hierarchy of the offending, Mr Steadman sat at the bottom.

“While the facts themselves are serious, they revolve around the two other accused who played a much more dominate role,” Magistrate Corry said.

Magistrate Corry took into account the defendant’s cooperation with police, the fact he returned the phone to the victim and his background of deprivation before hitting him with an 18-month good behaviour bond. He was also fined $800.

Woman given chance to pay back stolen rent money

A woman who stole another woman’s rent money has had her matter adjourned in order to pay it back.

Natasha Dorothy Taylor appeared before Penrith Local Court last Friday charged with larceny.

The court heard Ms Taylor went to a hotel to “clear her mind” following the

funeral of her flatmate and took $400 from a wallet someone had left behind.

“It was a significant amount of money for the victim... she couldn’t pay her rent,” Magistrate Stephen Corry remarked after Ms Taylor’s lawyer contended it was a small amount of cash, when assessing the objective seriousness of the offence.

She is due back in court on February 19 for sentence and is expected to provide evidence of payment to the victim.

Lawnmower mix-up leads to AVO breach

A Werrington man who breached his AVO by borrowing garden tools has been granted conditional bail.

Thomas William Ashby fronted Penrith Local Court via video link last Friday after being picked up for breaching a no contact order.

The court heard Mr Ashby had attended the premises of the person in need of protection to borrow a lawnmower and whipper snipper on the belief the victim was not home.

Magistrate Corry said there was no suggestion of violence or threats of violence before granting him conditional bail.

He is due back in court to be sentenced on other matters on March 13.

Valentine’s Day parole for man on domestic violence charges

Michael Ferry has had his jail sentence reduced on appeal.

Mr Ferry faced Penrith District Court on Tuesday in a bid to downgrade his 12-month sentence for domestic violencetype offences.

Acting Judge Norman Delaney confirmed the head sentence of 12 months, but reduced the non-parole period from six months to four months.

With time already served, he will be eligible for release on parole on February 14.

Man has “plan in place” to ensure he doesn’t drive again

A habitual offender jailed for continu-

ing to drive while disqualified has had his sentence varied on appeal.

Salah Abutaa, 51, had been serving a nine-month fixed term since he was sentenced to jail on October 27 last year for his latest driving while disqualified offence.

Acting Judge Norman Delaney said the way current legislation was structured, the only option for him was to go to prison, however he was critical of the decision makers who set the terms.

He said with the advent of computer recognition systems, police were able to sit on the side of the major motorways and nab banned drivers with ease.

“Jails are now full of people who are not criminals but involved in driving offences,” he said.

The court heard the appellant, who is barred from driving to 2035, racked up most of his convictions when he continued to drive to meet his employment obligations as a floor tiler.

Mr Abutaa’s lawyer said his client now had a “plan in place” to prevent him from getting into difficulty, with his partner obtaining her full licence and being able to become his driver upon his release.

Acting Judge Delaney confirmed the head sentence, but added a six-month non-parole period, making him eligible for release on April 26, 2017.

However he refused to quash his habitual offender declarations that would have seen his ban reduced to 2028.

The father-of-four’s family, consisting of his mother, partner, brother and three sisters, were in court to show their support.

Mother turned to drugs and crime after brother’s death

A local mother-of-two who turned to the drug ‘ice’ and succumbed to a life of crime after the death of her brother will be eligible for release sooner than expected.

Tammy Rukin, 37, was successful in reducing her non-parole period when she faced Acting Judge Norman Delaney at

Penrith District Court on Tuesday for a severity appeal.

The court heard the mother-of-two had wound up in jail after breaching a suspended sentence by possessing prohibited drugs, resisting police and failing to appear at court.

Ms Ruskin’s lawyer told the court the appellant’s criminal history only began in December 2014, not long after her brother was murdered.

He explained she became “obsessed” with trying to assist police to obtain evidence and began using the drug ‘ice’ around the same time.

Her lawyer said being incarcerated had been a much-needed “circuit-breaker” and “wake up call”.

“She needed to go to jail to stop the offending and to appreciate her children,” he said.

The Crown agreed that a longer period of supervision on parole was needed if she was going to turn her life around.

Her head sentence was increased from six to 15 months but her non-parole period was reduced to three months.

With time already served, she will be eligible for release from prison on March 14, 2017.

Man on drugs charges wishes he’d “made different choices”

Leslie Graham Andison has been handed a good behaviour bond after he was caught supplying a prohibited drug.

Mr Andison fronted Penrith Local Court last Friday where he pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis at Werrington.

When asked if he wanted to say anything about the matter, he expressed regret.

“Just that I’m remorseful for my actions and wished I’d made different choices,” he told the court.

He was convicted and ordered to enter a Section 9 good behaviour bond for 12 months.

Police desperate for leads about armed robberies

Police are appealing for information following two armed robberies over the weekend.

The first occurred at about 12.50am on Saturday, January 28 where a 35-year-old man was working at a service station on the Great Western Highway, Colyton.

The doors opened for a customer to exit the store, when a male person ran in and made his way towards the till.

He demanded for the attendant to give him money while holding a knife described to be about 25cm long.

The attendant has opened the till and the man reached over, grabbed money and ran from the location.

He is described as about 180cm tall, wearing black tracksuit pants, navy coloured work shirt with white long sleeved shirt underneath and a white cap.

The second incident occurred on Sunday, January 29 at about 12.50am where a 21-year-old man was working at a service station on Dunheved Road, Werrington.

Under similar circumstances, the attendant opened doors to let out a customer when a male person has run in.

Money was demanded while holding a 25cm knife.

The man reached over and grabbed the cash tray and ran from the location.

He is described as being about 170cm tall, wearing black tracksuit pants, black hooded jumper, black runners, black mask and carrying a blue bag.

Crime scenes were established at both locations, and investigations are continuing.

Children as young as 10 could be responsible for damage

Police are asking for public assistance regarding ongoing investigations into juveniles roaming the streets in Jordan Springs and Cranebrook.

On Friday and Saturday nights on and off for the past couple of months, there has been damage made to substations

causing blackouts through the suburbs.

Police are looking for males and females aged 10 and up, and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Werrington: Teen charged after threatening party guests

A 15-year-old youth has been arrested after threatening to kill people with a hatchet at a children’s birthday party.

On Saturday, January 28 at about midday, the youth was seen riding a trail bike near the park opposite Burton Street, Werrington.

The youth then returned to the party holding a hatchet and began threatening witnesses.

He was chased from the scene, and police located the youth a short time later and found the hatchet.

He was arrested and charged with common assault and possessing an offensive implement.

Thornton: Break and enters “opportunistic”, say police

Police are appealing for information after a slew of break and enters in Thornton.

Between 2am and 2.30am on Tuesday, January 31, police believe a group of youths from Mt Druitt have broken into three houses and two cars.

The homes were unlocked at the time, and a number of items have been stolen from cars that were parked at the properties.

As a result of police patrols, other vehicles in the estate were identified as having been broken into.

“It appears that they are on a bit of a rampage,” a Police spokesperson said.

Police are looking for two females and four or five males believed to be between 10 and 16-years-old.

It is believed that the crimes are opportunistic in nature.

Police are issuing a warning for people to keep their houses securely locked.

Disputing an estate The legal area of Wills and Estates is fraught with difficulty.

The main reason is that disputes often arise as to the contents of deceased persons’ Wills, and the people who wrote the Wills are not around to explain what they intended and the reasons why they did what they did when drafting their Will.

The most common forms of dispute regarding Wills arise out of the following: 1. Family provision claims – also known as contesting a person’s Will.

2. Testamentary capacity cases – where someone is arguing that the deceased lacked the mental capacity to make a Will.

3. Constructions suits – where the terms of the Will are ambiguous or confusing and the Court’s assistance is required to interpret them.

Another common type of dispute that arises in the context of deceased Estates is that of constructive trust or resulting trust. This usually occurs where a deceased person has promised someone a portion of their assets, sometimes in return for things like domestic assistance and care, but this promise is not contained in their Will and therefore there is no record of it.

Woman jailed over Werrington murder Amirah Droudis has been sentenced to 44 years in jail with a non-parole period of 33 years for the savage murder of a woman in Werrington in 2013.

Droudis is the former girlfriend of Man Haron Monis, the man responsible the

horrific Lindt Cafe siege in 2014. The murder victim was Monis’ ex-wife.

The victim was stabbed 18 times and set on fire.

The Crown had requested she be given a life sentence.

Support is critical during tough times Ahead of World Cancer Day tomorrow, Ali Monaghan is sharing her story of tears and triumph EMILY NEWTON

t 27-years-old, Ali Monaghan went for a routine ultrasound to confirm her theory that she had a cyst in her right breast.

Three days later, she had started treatment for breast cancer.

In recognition of World Cancer Day tomorrow (Saturday, February 4), Ms Monaghan, now 30, said the support she received was what helped her the most through her cancer battle.

Through the trauma of cancer, having support networks and someone to reach out to can make a world of difference.

“It was hard to see the light at the other side, but it was definitely my friends and family who got me through it,” Ms Monaghan said.

She recalls at times feeling lost as she was forced to resign from her job and remembered waking up on the morning of a chemotherapy treatment and crying for hours straight.

“I stopped wanting to do anything... I actually started becoming really anxious after that point, and I had never really been an anxious person before,” she said.

However, as she was undergoing treat-

ment, the Penrith and Blue Mountains community came together to support her.

“We actually have a family friend that owned a restaurant in Penrith and they held a fundraiser for me... 60 people came and they raised $6,000 for me,” Ms Monaghan said.

She said the money gave her “freedom” and seeing both people she knew and didn’t know at the fundraiser encouraged her to reach out to others.

“My friends and my family just really banded together, and my boyfriend. He was just such an amazing support,” Ms Monaghan said.

This year’s motto for World Cancer Day is ‘I can. We can.’ and highlights how everyone can help to reduce the burden of cancer.

The biggest help to keep Ms Monaghan positive was the support given to her from her peers, and feeling at one with the beautiful landscape of the Penrith region.

“Everyone listened which I think was the best. Everyone was just there for me, the whole time,” she said.

“I understand that you may feel that you want to give up, because I’ve been there and you can’t even fathom the other side.”

Ms Monaghan is now in remission, and appears to have won her battle.

Plants feel the heat too: Hidden victims of sweltering conditions EMILY NEWTON

enrith has sweltered through another week of scorching temperatures, topping an extremely hot 43.6 degrees on Monday.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, January saw eight days where temperatures climbed over 40 degrees, in contrast to just two in 2016.

Manager of Flower Power Penrith, David Simpson, said people and animals aren’t the only things that suffer in the heat.

“We tell people that plants are just like humans. They breathe, they burn, they get tired and dehydrated,” he said.

“They are just like us, and they need the same kind of care that we need.”

With limited relief from the heat over January, Mr Simpson said he has seen many customers who have had their gardens destroyed by the heat.

“People are coming in with plants that are burning with general sunburn, just like us humans,” he said.

“They’re drying out and not able to keep enough water in them, or sometimes even over watering them and burning them that way.”

While there are products available to help with stress relief for the garden, what is most important is paying attention to the weather.

he submissions report for The Northern Road upgrade between Glenmore Parkway at Glenmore Park and Jamison Road at South Penrith is now available.

The report outlines the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and concept design of the upgrade, with 41 responses received about the project.

Jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments, a Roads and Maritime spokesperson said people had a lot to say about the proposal.

“The majority of the responses received were in favour of the proposal,” the spokesperson said.

“After considering all responses, Roads and Maritime will incorporate some minor design changes into the proposal.

“These changes will involve removing the median island south of Glenmore Parkway to provide a right turn lane for vehicles entering properties on the western side of The Northern Road, until work between Littlefields Road and Glenmore Parkway is complete.”

The spokesperson added that the kerbside parking between Stafford Street and the Great Western Highway will be removed to provide three travel lanes in each direction along The Northern Road.

“To offset this removal, some parking available on the Great Western Highway near Kingswood Train Station and on Somerset Street will be changed to unrestricted parking,” the spokesperson said.

“The public will be advised of times and dates closer to the start of work.”

Work on the project is expected to start in mid-2017 and be completed by 2020, weather permitting.

undreds of bikers are set to roll through Penrith for this year’s ‘Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer’ on March 19, to raise money for Lifeline Western Sydney.

Last year’s event saw just under 500 people riding to raise awareness of depression and suicide.

Riding this year is Penrith’s Samantha Bills, who finds the cause close to her heart.

“I lost two brothers to suicide back in the 1990s, five years apart. With both of them being males, neither of them spoke out. I hope we’re getting through that stigma now,” Ms Bills said.

“I suffer clinical depression and I need

to look after myself, and let people know that it’s important that you don’t need to be at crisis point to access all the services out there.”

Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians under 45-years-old, and Penrith Coordinator David Peach said the day is very meaningful for the community.

“Most of the people on the ride have been bitten by the black dog in some way in their life, everyone has a story to share,” he said.

“Today, in this country, eight people will take their life.

“Any other affliction that has people dying at this rate would be deemed a national crisis and get funding. It’s time we started calling it a crisis and dealing with it in those terms.”

This year’s motto is ‘we need to talk’, an idea that Ms Bills thinks is essential in reducing the stigma.

“Everyone will have an off day, but it’s when that off day becomes an off month that people need to start thinking there could be something more to this,” she said.

2017’s ride starts at Panthers and will end at Grey Gums Cafe on Putty Rd where there will be a band, safety displays from the Motorcycle Council of NSW, RMS and NSW Police plus trade displays from the motorcycle industry.

Respected local surgeon remembered for tireless work ERIN MAMO

he local community is mourning the passing of respected doctor Patrick Cregan.

As a surgeon who practiced at Nepean Hospital since 1983, Dr Cregan retired last year due to an ongoing battle of his own with cancer.

A father of seven, Dr Cregan passed away in palliative care in Springwood last week.

He died just days before he was due to receive an Australia Day honours award

Throughout his career Dr Cregan assisted in the establishment of Nepean Hospital as a University Teaching Hospital, and assisted in the establishment of Nepean Hospital’s Cancer Care Centre.

He sat in the role of Chairman for Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District from 2011 to 2015 and was the Clinical Director of Surgery for the Sydney West Area Health Service from 2001 to 2011.

Other roles he took on included Board Member of General Surgeons of Australia,

Scientific Convenor of Annual Scientific Meetings, Board Member for NSW Cancer Institute, and Member of the New South Wales Committee for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Current Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chair and former NSW Health Minister, Peter Collins, said Dr Cregan always stood out as a beacon, inspiring staff and developing a vision for Nepean Hospital.

“His loss will be deeply felt by his family, to whom we all extend our deepest condolences,” Mr Collins said.

Dr Cregan was honoured with an AM for significant service to medicine and health care delivery in NSW, and to clinical advisory and governance roles.

He was informed about the honour prior to his passing.

Therapy dogs bring a smile in times of need EMILY NEWTON

atrons at Rocky’s Gym in Werrington have proven working out your heart is just as important as your biceps, by donating over $700 to Nepean Therapy Dogs.

Rocky’s Gym Manager Becky Rock and her lovable dog Pebbles light up the gym, well known for the adorable outfits the cute pet often sports.

“Pebbles is the most adorable little social dog you can have... Everyone who comes into our business, she greets at the door,” Ms Rock said.

“I lost my Dad and I lost my son last year, and she just lights my life. She makes me smile every day. When I’m sad, she licks my tears away.”

Pebbles, who is now three-years-old, was trained to be a therapy dog after Ms Rock met Nicole Celeban from Nepean Therapy Dogs while buying a new outfit for Pebbles.

The charity brings trained therapy dogs to hospitals, nursing homes and schools to reduce anxiety, depression and stress in the local community.

Ms Rock said it’s a way that she can give back to the community.

“After I lost my son, I needed to do some-

thing, and I said to Nicole, can we make Pebbles a Nepean Therapy Dog,” Ms Rock said.

“It makes me feel good to see people smiling and how they love her. If I make other people happy with my dog, it makes me happy.

“I think it’s an amazing charity because it brings so much happiness to people who can’t have pets anymore or children in hospital who are sick.”

Ms Celeban said that local support from the community is vital to continue their services.

“Local support is crucial for us, as we’re not getting much support elsewhere,” she said.

“Without local support, we wouldn’t be able to exist.”

Ms Rock and the team at Werrington Squash Centre, where Rocky’s Gym resides, have filled three charity jars for the dogs so far and more is expected to come.

A raffle, which was held last year, sold out of tickets in just three days and managed to raise $500.

“We’re going to do another raffle in February,” Ms Rock said.

“Nicole and Paula do such an excellent job, and all the volunteers. It’s marvellous what everyone does.”

Every year, we do it again. We show what a juvenile country we are by having an argument about the date of Australia Day. How ridiculous! To see some of our most popular celebrities jumping on their soap box was disgusting, and I for one will not be watching any more of their movies or TV shows – I have made a list! Australia Day is about pride, pride in the great country we have become, and pride in our multiculturalism. It’s also about pride in the Aboriginal people, the first Australians. Don’t change the date I feel ashamed that so many people in our younger generations are pushing for a change in the date of Australia Day. While January 26 was not a day to celebrate for Indigenous Australians, it certainly gave life to the brand new Australia and the wonderful country we have today. Bowls day a chance to raise funds for important community cause

ver 50 medical graduates got out their scalpels and stethoscopes this week, beginning their yearlong internships at Nepean Hospital.

Roommates Julian Quigley and Christopher Chan were among the 54 interns to start on Wednesday.

“I was a little bit nervous, it’s a bit different as a medical student where you have no responsibility but we definitely feel like there’s a little bit more riding on the things we do now,” Mr Quigley said.

“It’s actually our job now so it’s a little bit scary but also exciting that after so much study we finally get to do it.”

Mr Chan said he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he finished school but is glad he found medicine.

“It’s a really interesting way to be able to help people and use what you’ve learnt in a really good way,” he said.

“You get to interact with and coordinate a lot of health care patients and make really big impacts on their lives.”

NSW funds more medical intern positions than any other state or territory.

In 2017, 992 interns will start at hospitals around NSW – up from 983 in 2016.

Ms Quigley and Mr Chan, who met in medical school at Sydney University, said they can’t wait to try it all.

enrith Bowling and Recreation Club will host its annual Charity Bowls Day on Friday, February 24 to support Penrith PCYC. Following last year’s success of raising over $5,000, the one-day event offers the community a chance to give back and support a local organisation.

General Manager Julie Cullen said the day is about bringing the community together while having fun.

“I love seeing the Penrith community come together for a fun day at our Club

and it’s also so rewarding to be able to raise money for the Penrith PCYC,” she said.

“It was really interesting last year, the amount of people in the room that had been affected in their lifetime by the PCYC.” Penrith PCYC Club Manager Leann Dobbin said the not-for-profit charity relies heavily on fundraising.

“Everything that we raise within the community stays within the community and helps us develop youth programs for free,” Ms Dobbin said.

Penrith is a dynamic, well-connected city that has strong international relationships. Penrith’s longest standing international relationship is with Fujieda in Japan. A sister city agreement between the two cities was signed in November 1984 where amongst other things, both cities pledged to establish ‘a lasting and friendly relationship’.

Penrith and Fujieda have undertaken a diverse range of programs, activities and exchanges and many close friendships have been forged between people of the two cities.

Without doubt the most enduring and successful program has been the annual student exchange ambassador program. For the past 29 years this program, coordinated between Penrith and Fujieda has been the major initiative between the two cities and like the relationship this program continues to go from strength to strength.

Applications are now being called for students to represent Penrith on the 2017 exchange program to Fujieda for approximately three weeks in September/October.

Many students have commented on their return from Fujieda that the exchange was a truly life changing experience for them.

When in Japan, students attend school with their host, travel to shrines and temples and go on an excursion to Hiroshima. Students get to experience Japanese culture, learn about the Japanese way of life and share their Australian life and culture with Japanese students in return.

he volunteers at Llandilo Rural Fire Service (RFS) helped with a different kind of emergency last week, tasked with setting up the perfect proposal.

Volunteer Josh Gow wanted to give his partner Bernice Agius something to remember when he recruited the help of his RFS team.

“I’ve been in the RFS for four and a half years now, and I’ve always wanted to incorporate that into a marriage proposal,” Mr Gow said.

“My friends were quite helpful, and it was pretty short notice for what they pulled off. Even my captain was in on it.

“I planned a few things, but I sort of told her about them because I was too excited, but I caught her by surprise that night.”

Ms Agius remembers the lead up to the proposal as a strange night, knowing that something was different.

“We went for a walk around Jordan Springs, which is very unusual for Josh to want to go for a walk,” she laughed

“He was texting his friends, and he wouldn’t let me see his phone or tell me who he was talking to, so I got a bit annoyed at him.”

Mr Gow said he gave his team half an hour to create something special while he tried to distract his partner.

Lights covered the trucks inside the garage and the sign out the front read ‘Will you marry me Bernice?’ as Mr Gow bent down on one knee.

“When we pulled up, she said ‘what’s going on here’ and I said, ‘we’re getting engaged’,” Mr Gow said.

Reward yourself regularly Small rewards (e.g. chocolate) for smaller tasks and larger rewards for ticking off the bigger goals (e.g. a night out at the end of the week).

These give you something to look forward to, and has the added bonus of giving your brain and/or body a rest from work for a period.

Trade your ‘reluctant to do’ tasks with someone else For example, you might need some content written for your website, and the copywriter you know needs something you can offer: win-win!

riting down your feelings by hand can help resolve arguments, strengthen your relationships and could even score you a date, a survey has revealed.

The survey of more than 1260 Australians, conducted in time for Valentine’s Day by online dating site RSVP and Pilot Pen Australia, reveals that 85 per cent of people say that writing down their feelings helps them feel clearer and calmer with 55 per cent saying it helped them kiss and make up after an argument.

“Taking the time to reflect inwardly and then picking up a pen to write your feelings down can be incredibly powerful for yourself and your relationships, helping you move through difficulties onto better times,” said John Aiken,

psychologist and dating and relationship expert.

Despite the increasing use of communication via technology, 80 per cent of survey respondents said that they had hand written a love letter and an overwhelming 90 per cent said they believed there was still a place for the love letter today. This trend also extends to the most romantic day of the year, with 77 per cent of people saying they write and send cards on Valentine’s Day. “It seems pen power still has an important place when it comes to expressing love and appreciation,” Mr Aiken said.

83 per cent said that a hand written invitation would be the most romantic way to be asked out on a date, compared to a text message.

I always said to myself that if I ever thought ‘oh here comes ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ again’ I’d stop doing it,” Tom Burlinson said when asked about his almost 20 year career singing the songs of Frank Sinatra.

With his first Sinatra show in 1998 the singer/actor opened the door to a lifetime of shows, bringing the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes to audiences around the country.

This love affair has provided the entertainer – known to many for his role in the classic Aussie film ‘The Man From Snowy River’ – not only with a stable career in an unstable industry, but the chance to honour one of music history’s most iconic and unique performers.

“I suppose I keep in the back of my mind that I am trying to do justice to the great man himself,” Tom said.

“I don’t impersonate him but I am trying to celebrate him and make people appreciate the wonderful career he had, the fantastic output of material that he had and his talent.”

While his shows are not an impersonation as such, Tom does admit that Sinatra’s style has started to permeate all his performances.

“I am very, very influenced by his interpretation of songs and his singing style, so even when I’m sort of trying not

to sound like Sinatra people still say ‘oh gosh you sound like Sinatra’,” he laughed.

“For me Sinatra was the greatest of them all, so it’s not such a bad style to imitate.”

Tom’s latest show is ‘Simply Sinatra’ – which takes audiences through all of the Rat Pack legend’s greatest hits.

“It goes right back to the early days of the 1940s when Sinatra first rose to stardom with that beautiful, romantic lyrical kind of singing that he did then,” he said.

Backed by a five piece band, Tom will be bringing the show to Penrith this month.

In the last few years the entertainer has also started taking his musical talent to the seas, with performances on cruise ships throughout the Pacific and South East Asia.

“It’s another source of employment for entertainers now,” Tom said.

“It’s an industry that is growing and I think the standard of entertainment on cruise ships has improved in recent years.”

It’s not a bad way to earn a living when you consider the perks of the job.

“I keep saying to myself ‘everyone else is paying for this and I’m being paid’,” Tom laughed.

Ê Good news for fans of recently returned Channel Seven drama ‘800 Words’ with the show renewed for a third season.

Production on season three will commence this month in New Zealand. The hit drama returned last Tuesday night to great ratings. Ê Season five of ‘Gogglebox Australia’ returns to LifeStyle on Wednesday, February 15 at 7.30pm. The entire cast is back, with new episodes replayed on Channel Ten the following day at 9pm. Ê FOX Sports News is launching more new shows ahead of the upcoming NRL and AFL seasons. Two new shows commence at the beginning of March to analyse all of the action across the weekend. Pat Stack and Tom Wilson will share hosting duties for ‘Fulltime Live’ at 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 6pm on Sundays. The burden of diabetes in Australia is extensive. There are two main forms of diabetes – insulin dependant (Type 1) and non-insulin dependant (Type 2) diabetes.

In Type 1, the body has an inability to produce insulin. In Type 2, the body produces less insulin and the bodily tissues are resistant to, and unable to adequately utilise the insulin produced.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that in 2014-15 1.2 million people in Australia have a form of diabetes, with one million of these being Type 2 diabetics. This is significant considering the preventable nature of the disease.

Currently there is no cure for diabetes, but rather it involves a lifelong allied health approach to managing the condition. Podiatrists play an integral role in the management of individuals with diabetes.

Keeping your pet cat safe and entertained at home Cats are a very popular pet but they need a special kind of care and attention to make sure they don’t go wild in your home...

There are over three million pet cats in Australia, and they are the second most common pet after dogs.

Cats are wonderful pets that are very intelligent and playful. They are generally less active than dogs and enjoy sleeping for a large portion of the day. They do not usually need or even tolerate walks and are well suited to a family with a less active lifestyle or those living in smaller homes like units or townhouses.

Cats are very inquisitive creatures and if allowed will often wander great distances. Cats that are outside also pose a risk to our native wildlife as they are expert hunters. If cats are kept inside they are protected from common problems which include cat fights, dog attacks, car accidents, parasite infestation and snake bites. By keeping cats inside you will protect our wildlife and keep your beloved cat safe. There are also many types of cat enclosures to enable cats to be safely outside.

When keeping cats inside it is important to enrich their environment to avoid

boredom and anxiety. This may be seen as inappropriate toileting, destructive or aggressive behaviour. There are several ways to enrich your cat’s environment, including toys, play, training, novel ways of feeding and cat friendly additions to the house. The aim is to encourage a cat’s natural behaviour.

A variety of toys can be used like stuffed toys, balls or toys suspended from elastic or string. Rotating the selection of toys is important to increase their novelty and interest. Ensure all string and thread toys are hidden between play sessions as these can be dangerous if eaten. Always remember that hands and fingers should never be used to encourage play and play biting should always be redirected to toys.

Novel ways of providing food and treats include treat balls, food tossing sessions and offering treats during training. Cats are not as willing as dogs to learn lots of tricks but with short sessions, tasty treats and perseverance you will be surprised what you can teach a cat to do. You can hide treats in boxes to encourage exploratory behaviour. Water fountains are an interesting addition and many cats prefer flowing water.

Cats love to explore and they will seek out good hiding spots and vantage points.

Cat igloos, cat baskets and cardboard boxes all provide good places for cats to hide.

Cats enjoy exploring vertically and by fitting cat shelves and placing cat trees in the house you can enable cats to perch at higher levels. Cats enjoy looking through windows into the outside world so positioning them near windows is ideal.

Objects for the cat to scratch should be provided as this will help unwanted scratching on furniture. Some cats prefer vertical scratching posts while others prefer horizontal posts. A lot of cat trees will also have scratching areas on them.

After a long hot summer break, parents all over Penrith are this week celebrating (or hating) their children being back at school for another year.

However if your children are learning to swim, they might already be ahead of the game, with a study out of Griffith University suggesting swimming children are not only safer, but smarter.

The research conducted over four years has concluded that children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, and indicates that swimming children have many advantages when starting school.

“While we expected the children to show better physical development and perhaps be more confident through swimming, the results in literacy and numeracy really shocked us,” said lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen.

“The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following

instructions”.

Professor Jorgensen said that as well as achieving physical milestones faster, the swimming children scored significantly better in visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring in and drawing lines and shapes.

“On average, these children were 11 months ahead of the normal population in Oral Expression, six months ahead in Mathematics Reasoning and two months

ahead in Brief Reading,” she added.

“Most amazing was the difference in Story Recall (17 months ahead) and Understanding Directions (20 months ahead)”.

While on the subject of school, many children (and parents) will this month experience their first school swimming carnival. I remember my school carnival days very fondly, but while they are great fun, remember the water and sun safety basics.

Sunscreen is not optional and needs to be reapplied several times throughout the day. A broad rimmed hat, polo shirt and zinc in their house colour is ideal for further sun protection.

Food, lots of water, a card game or book for the sometimes long waits between age groups and two towels (one to use and one to sit on) are always handy, as is a waterproof bag to bring everything home. Always follow the instructions of the race official, and only enter the water when instructed to do so.

And remember, hair sprayed in house colour/s may look great, but you probably won’t be allowed in the pool.

he NSW New England is not a wine region we hear a lot about, yet like so many of our other younger, smaller and sometimes off the beaten track hideaways, it’s one that’s full of great surprises for the wine adventurer.

And amongst its many gems is a winery called Topper’s Mountain at Tingha near Armidale on the New England Tablelands, one that owners Mark and Stephanie Kirby never cease to surprise with the quality of the grapes they grow in this high elevation (900 metres) cool climate region, and the resultant wines that are made for them by celebrated contract maker Mike Hayes.

Their 2015 Barrel Aged Gewurztraminer is one such drop, an absolutely top-notch Gewurz whose aromatics are all about clouds of Turkish delight, stone fruits, a little honey, marzipan and musk, and which couple on a creamy, fruit-laden palate that’s also got gorgeous hints of spice, oaky tannin, acidity and has a lovely crispy finish.

This wine is worth every cent of its $35 price tag.

One to note: Down in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, Garry and Julie Hounsell at Toolangi Vineyards also grow their own premium fruit, and have their wines made for them – in their case by a number of makers who are supremoes in individual varietals.

It’s a philosophy that rewards all from grower to consumer as it results in wines of wonderfully unique and distinctive personality. One such that’s just been released is their Toolangi 2016 Rosé made from Shiraz grapes off their Dixons Creek vineyard, and crafted for them by Dominique Portet Winery.

A good education is about more than just going to school Our kids are back at school, but getting a good education starts with what we teach our children at home...

With our children heading back to school, we’re well aware of the value of good education. We want our children to be able to handle the three R’s (even if only one of them actually starts with R!).

Yet, we also know that education is more than academic success. We want our children to be able to relate well with others.

We want them to be able to understand life’s important issues. We’d like them to do well at a sport or at least have a wide range of interests (rather than playing computer games all day!)

These might be good things, but has something been left out?

Consider how Jesus grew as a child from what the Bible tells us in Luke’s account of Jesus; “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men”.

See this good, healthy balance; four key areas of life.

Jesus grew in knowledge and wisdom, understanding our world. He grew in stature, maturing physically and mentally.

Jesus enjoyed a good reputation, good favour with people.

Yet there is an important fourth area,

the spiritual; growing in favour with God, which often, people miss out.

Just as a child’s growth is limited by not giving proper attention to their physical development, how much more will our children be impacted by not giving proper attention to the growth in their relationship with God. Help your children to get to know Jesus.

Encourage them to read the Bible. Even better, read it to them!

Encourage them to pray. Encourage them to be part of a church with a good kids programme. Encourage them at School Scripture.

The result will be healthy growth and your children will thank you for it!

eonay’s Jessica Fox has continued her excellent start to 2017 by winning both the women’s K1 and C1 finals at the Oceania Canoe Slalom Championships in New Zealand last weekend.

Despite picking up a two second penalty in the K1 final, the 22-year-old two-time Olympic medallist still finished more than a second clear of France’s Nouria Newman at the Vector Wero Whitewater Park in Auckland.

Fox finished in 98.37 seconds, with Newman 1.32 seconds behind and fellow Aussie Kate Eckhardt clocking in at 101.34 for third place.

Fox, who won bronze at the Rio Olympics, relished the small but talented field, which also featured 2009 world champion Jasmin Schornberg, who finished fifth.

“I was a bit more aggressive in the final and it didn’t feel as flowy as my semi final but I pulled a lot harder in the straight sections,” Fox said.

“It wasn’t a perfect run but I was happy with how I raced.”

It was Fox’s first time racing at the recently opened Vector Wero, with the Penrith local delighted the Southern Hemisphere has another world class canoe slalom venue.

“It’s been good to come out and discover a new course – it’s really challenging and we needed a few sessions to get used to it – but technically I’ve improved on downstream stopper moves and I’m looking forward to racing here again,” she said.

Meanwhile, Fox backed up Sunday’s K1 victory with C1 gold the following day.

Fox was in devastating form, picking up a two second penalty but still having plenty of time to spare over the rest of the field.

“I hit gate one, which could’ve made it a bad start, but I think it actually fired me up and made me attack it a bit more, because I knew I had that two second time penalty,” Fox said.

“I was really happy with the run after that and I executed the plan that I had in my head.”

Basketball Moore honoured for decades of dedication to basketball NATHAN TAYLOR

eonie Moore has dedicated more than 30 years to the sport of basketball in Penrith, so it comes as no surprise that the hardworking coach and administrator was named Penrith Council’s Sportsperson of the Year.

The Werrington Downs resident was awarded the prestigious honour from Penrith Mayor John Thain, due to her ongoing commitment in supporting and growing basketball throughout the area.

“Leonie is patient, understanding and supportive, and a real role model to the younger generations,” Cr Thain said.

“She is particularly passionate about fostering young women through the sport and has seen a number of young people go on to successful sporting careers.”

Speaking with the Weekender, the long-time Penrith Basketball Association Manager said she was in shock upon hearing the news.

“I don’t really know who nominated me but when I received my letter from the Mayor I was very humbled, surprised and a little embarrassed as there are so many great sportspeople in our community,” Moore said.

“This is a great honour not only for me

but also for my chosen sport of basketball, those around me who share the same passion and commitment, and all of the Penrith community who love the game as much as I do.”

It’s certainly been an amazing 12 months for Moore, who coached Penrith’s women’s Youth League team to a championship last season.

While Moore admits she doesn’t put in the long hours for the accolades, she does appreciate when they come by.

“It’s a nice feeling and very rewarding to realise that your work has been appreciated,” she said.

“It is pleasing that you have been involved with and influenced people enough for them to take the time and nominate you.”

Interestingly, Moore was the first nonathlete in years to win Council’s Sportsperson of the Year award, with the honour previously going to athletes including Olympian Jessica Fox, golfer Joshua Gadd and basketballer Tahlia Tupaea.

Moore said she is glad the Sportsperson of the Year award acknowledges people from behind the scenes as well.

“I think the award is able to be diverse and cover any area in sport where the sport, our young people and our community benefit,” she said.

AFL’s new era begins this weekend Penrith local Renee Tomkins hopeful of making Giants debut in historic opening round encounter NATHAN TAYLOR

WS Giants recruit Renee Tomkins hopes she has done enough to impress the coaches to be selected in this weekend’s maiden AFL Women’s clash against Adelaide.

After a tough and gruelling pre-season, the 30-year-old Penrith Ramettes star said it would mean the world to her if she was chosen to play in the historic first game.

“Hopefully I’ve shown the coaches enough, I’m really keen to get out there and play,” Tomkins told the Weekender.

“Things have been hectic at training lately. The load’s lifted, we’re fit and gelled together really well.

“I’d be super stoked and excited if I get selected – my goal would be reached for sure.”

Since returning from a serious knee injury in November, the late Draft pick has been working hard to stand out among her younger peers.

To make matters even more difficult, Tomkins was given a new position to master by the Giants’ coaching staff.

“I was a ruck playing for Penrith and now I’m a centre half-back for GWS,” Tomkins revealed.

“That position is a lot different but I’m getting there, learning all the new bits and pieces that I have to do.”

Tomkins gave her new position a crack when the Giants took on the Brisbane Lions in their only trial match late last month.

While the Giants went down by 16 points in awful conditions, Tomkins got a good feel of what the new competition was going to be like.

“The heavy rain made it a really tight game… it was hell for leather and the girls were really going at each other,” she said.

“There’s certainly going to be no easy games, they are all going to be hard. We need to be ready.”

Tomkins won’t find out whether she’s made Saturday’s side until today (Friday) when the team flies down to Adelaide for the clash.

“There’s 27 of us in the squad and they pick 23,” Tomkins said.

“Everyone is playing for a position, so fingers crossed.”

The GWS Giants take on the Adelaide Crows this Saturday at Thebarton Oval.

The Giants will play their first home game in Round 3 against Fremantle at Blacktown International Sportspark on February 18.

Athletics Zane carries on proud family tradition of athletics success NATHAN TAYLOR

fter watching his brother clean up with accolades in athletics over the years, young Zane Lang wanted a piece of the action.

Now, after a few years in the sport, 12-year-old Zane is following in his brother’s footsteps by winning his own swag of medals at the recent Trans Tasman Challenge.

The Trans Tasman Challenge is an athletics competition for male and female athletes, from both NSW and Auckland, in the U11 and U12 age groups.

Every second year a team from Auckland travels to Sydney for the Trans Tasman Challenge while on alternate years a team from NSW travels to Auckland to compete.

This year’s Trans Tasman Challenge was held at Campbelltown Athletics Centre, with Zane picking up three bronze medals for his efforts.

The Glenmore Park resident finished third with a personal best time of 4:56.50 in the 1500m, while he also picked up another bronze in the 800m.

“I managed to do a PB in the 1500m, which was the first time I’ve ever broken five minutes,” he proudly told the Weekender.

“I honestly think I lifted for the occasion.”

Zane rounded out his excellent weekend with a third bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.

Making the occasion even more special for the new Year 7 St Dominic’s student was the fact he was the only member of the Jamison Little Athletics Centre to compete in the prestigious competition.

“It was pretty fun and it was good to race against a different country like New Zealand,” Zane said.

“I didn’t think I would do as well as I did because at the Trials I didn’t come first at all, but I ended up coming first in the NSW team.”

Helping Zane perform so well at his debut Trans Tasman Challenge was the many hours of training he put in with his brother, father and recent Rio Olympian Ben St Lawrence.

“On Wednesdays my dad, brother and I train at Jamison Park with Run Crew and Olympian Ben St Lawrence,” Zane said.

“Ben’s really inspirational and a good role model for me.”

Whilst not competing on the track, Zane loves playing rugby league where he enjoys using his speed to his advantage.

He’ll soon hit the track again, however, at the upcoming Regionals in Blacktown.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith kids can expect to get a blast out of cricket this summer with Cricket Australia’s exciting junior sports program for kids, MILO T20 Blast, commencing locally next week.

MILO T20 Blast bridges the gap between MILO in2CRICKET and junior club cricket. The program introduces girls and boys (ages 7-12) to the sport through a super fun, social and safe cricket program.

The eight-week program is much shorter than traditional cricket, with a maximum of 90 minutes playing time each week on a weeknight. All the equipment is supplied and the games take place at the same venue.

St Clair/Colyton will run a program commencing this Monday, February 6 at Cook and Banks Reserve, Colyton, while PJCA Penrith will run a program commencing on Thursday, February 9 at Cranebrook Park, Cranebrook.

All programs have a free ‘Come and Try’ on the first week of their program, however it’s strongly recommended you register to guarantee a spot.

CRICKET: Penrith’s good run of form has come to an end, defeated by St George in Round 11 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a Two Day match at Howell Oval, St George hit the crease first scoring 226 runs.

Ryan Smith was best with the ball for Penrith taking 5/97.

When Penrith hit the crease, they virtually collapsed and were subsequently wiped out for 106 runs.

Opening batsman Jim DiBartolo was best for the home side scoring 30 before retiring.

BASEBALL: After a week off due to the Australia Day break, Penrith will return to action this week against Manly in Round 16 of the NSW State Baseball League competition.

W-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers W-League side have gone down to Perth Glory in heartbreaking fashion during the final match of the season last Sunday afternoon.

A strike from Glory’s Caitlin Doeglas in the final seconds of the match broke the deadlock against the Wanderers, earning Perth a home semi final next week.

The loss saw the closure of the Wanderers’ W-League season, finishing eighth on the ladder with four wins.

ou would have to be a diehard fan to recognise many of the names in Penrith’s Auckland Nines team, with the club unveiling a very young side for this weekend’s pre-season tournament.

Penrith’s biggest stars including Matt Moylan, Trent Merrin and Bryce Cartwright will be rested for Saturday and Sunday’s tournament, held at Eden Park in Auckland.

The most high profile player making the trip across the Tasman for Penrith is new recruit James Tamou, while rising star Nathan Cleary along with Waqa Blake and Isaah Yeo will also play.

22-year-old Yeo, who made his Country Origin debut last year, will captain the side for the first time.

“I’m really looking forward to getting over there and hopefully leading by example in the tournament,” Yeo told Panthers TV. “[The Nines] is a really exciting format of the game, the fans over there absolutely love it and it’s just a really good atmosphere.”

While Yeo is looking forward to the fun contest, Panthers bosses Phil Gould and Brian Fletcher have a different view.

The pair were very vocal this week on their disapproval of the Nines, with Fletcher dramatically calling for the tournament to be axed due to the continuous number of injuries suffered to players over the years.

Fletcher said rugby league clubs want to win NRL premierships, not the Nines.

Despite the obvious concerns, Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has put together a youthful side made up of excitement machines that possess plenty of points.

The Panthers will kick things off against the Bulldogs at 10.25am this Saturday before taking on reigning premiers Cronulla at 1.55pm.

On Sunday, Penrith battle Jarryd Hayne and the Titans in their final pool match at 9am.

If the Panthers manage to win enough games, they will advance to the Quarter Finals stage.
