etrol prices may be at 12 month lows, but you can’t beat not paying for it at all. A free petrol promotion at St Marys on Wednesday afternoon resulted in traffic
chaos as local residents lined up for hours in a desperate bid to secure free fuel. Police even had to be called in to handle the traffic drama that surrounded the Metro Petroleum outlet on the Great Western Highway. The free fuel offer did have a catch – motorists had to pay for the fuel and then download the
Go2 Rewards app on their smart phone to be reimbursed in full for their tank of petrol. The slight catch clearly didn’t deter the hundreds of motorists who lined up on Wednesday. In the midst of the chaotic scenes, one woman’s car broke down after, ironically, running out of petrol while waiting in the queue.

ow did he possibly walk away from this? A motorcyclist has somehow escaped serious injury after colliding with a four wheel drive in Erskine Park. Police, paramedics and the RFS responded to reports of the collision on Erskine Park Road at around 9pm on Monday night. Upon arrival, services located the rider walking around at the scene and a family of two adults and three children from the four wheel drive out of their vehicle. Paramedics assessed the rider at the scene who appeared to be uninjured, however he was transported to hospital as a precaution. All five occupants from the four wheel drive were also uninjured.

here is a particular time of day that always reminds me of my grandmother, Mary. It’s at around 6pm, and if you walk around the streets you’ll smell the mix of food being cooked in houses as dinner time nears. Spending most school holidays with Nanna Mary growing up, the amazing smells wafting from the kitchen at around 6pm were an everyday occurrence. With ‘Wheel of Fortune’ on in the background, her home cooked meals were always a highlight of my holidays. Last weekend we sadly lost Mary after she eventually succumbed to the dementia battle that had unfortunately dominated the last few years of her life. Growing up, Nanna Mary was such an important part of my life. She spoiled her only grandson rotten, whether it be saving me a special piece of crackling from her famous Christmas roast pork, or slipping me $50 on special occasions as if it was some sort of top secret operation. When I broke my leg by stupidly riding my bicycle into a stopped car when I was about 10-years-old, she visited me at Nepean Hospital virtually every single day of my three month stay. And that was no easy task, either. Without a car, she would set out from her home in Bass Hill and via a range of buses and trains, would find her way to Kingswood to spend time with me. School holiday activities usually involved a trip to the movies, and I found out later that she would take herself to see the movie the week before I arrived, just to make sure it was suitable for my young eyes.

“All of us who are lucky to have our grandparents still around know how much of a special role they play”
Her life was far from easy but is a great example of how all of us living normal, day to day lives have a remarkable story lurking in our background. She was born on Boxing Day 1929, at the beginning of the Great Depression. When she was a toddler, her father Bernard Mulligan (who was 37 at the time) was almost killed in a freak axe attack at their home in Leichhardt. The story had significant media coverage at the time and while Bernard, my great grandfather, survived, he was left with life-long disabilities. There was a bizarre twist to this story that we only discovered a couple of years ago, but that’s a tale for another day. In 1945, the family was dealt another blow when a hand written telegram delivered the news that Ronald Phillip Mulligan had died while being held as Prisoner of War in Sandakan, Borneo. Nanna Mary always told the story of

seeing her brother for the final time, boarding a train before heading off to fight in World War II. She always said she felt she’d never see him again, and tragically her feeling was correct; a reality that thousands of families in Australia were forced to confront. She always spoke so highly and proudly of her brother, and often researched Sandakan and the grim fate that her brother faced there. His medals now proudly hang in my home office. She would later go on to marry Frank, and have two children – my father Steve and my uncle Noel (who was born on her 21st birthday – Boxing Day 1950). Frank passed away in 1977, leaving Mary a young widow and a strongly independent woman. She lived in her old, fibro home in Bass Hill right up until last year, when the dementia battle simply became too much and she moved here to Penrith. Sadly, her sister Melita also suffered from dementia, a devastating disease that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. The stories Mary used to tell have been silent and left unsaid for a few years now, and there is very much a sense of relief in her passing, a realisation that she is in a far better place now. To us Mary was a one-of-a-kind, but all of us who are lucky to have our grandparents still around know how much of a special role they play in the family. Mary Noelene Dodds may not have been a household name and she may have led a somewhat simple life, but we’ll certainly never forget the impact that she had on all of us.

amilies can let out a sigh of relief, as 11 local community service providers are given the resources to continue to provide vital support programs for another 18 months. $16 million of State Government funding has been extended until June 30, 2017, to ensure Penrith families, youth and children can continue to access much-needed support. Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres met with Jane Gold from Penrith Women’s Health Centre on Wednesday to announce the extension of funding for early intervention and intensive programs. To Ms Gold and the Women’s Health Centre, it means for $203,000, their Staying Home Leaving Violence program can keep hundreds of local families in their own homes, and safely. “So that’s helping mums and kids to stay in their own home and getting the offender out,” she said. “We will go into that home and make sure they have a safety action plan, have peep holes or changed locks, sensor lights – just things to make them feel a bit more secure. “It allows them to not be uprooted

Mr Ayres said funding will enable services to address the issues in families that put children at risk of entering the
child protection system. “We’ve got an amazing group of professionals who work in this sector that do an amazing job, across a multitude of services,” he said. “Extending funding until mid-2017 will provide certainty for partners that provide important services like case management, parenting programs and domestic violence support.”

Cranebrook: Woman refused bail over meat thefts
Cranebrook: Man to face court after failed sneaky move
A woman has been charged after she allegedly committed the same offence twice in just over a week. The 38-year-old, from Cranebrook, was released on bail after she entered a supermarket and allegedly stole $300 worth of meat products on Thursday, January 21. Just over a week later, on Sunday, January 31, the same woman entered a different supermarket in Jordan Springs and allegedly stole another $107 worth of meat products. Thanks to footage obtained from CCTV, police were able to investigate the matter and track down the woman. She was charged with two counts of stealing and also for breaching her bail conditions. She had her bail refused and was due to appear in Penrith Local Court yesterday, Wednesday, February 3.
A man tried pushing his luck earlier this week after he was stopped for not wearing a seat belt in Cranebrook. The 50-year-old, from Cranebrook, was stopped on Andrews Road at about 10.45am on Sunday, January 31. It was discovered that he was driving on a suspended license leading police to issue him with a suspension notice. They left him to call someone to pick him up. As police were driving away, the man got back into his car and drove off. He was subsequently pulled over further down the road and was arrested. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on February 22.

The writing’s on the wall for future generations DALE DRINKWATER
fter they pack pencil cases and cover new books, local parents wave goodbye to their children and say hello to another school year. Dusting their hands off, it seems preparation is done, but are parents ever really ‘back to school ready’? Jack Goodman from YourTutor said a whopping 88 per cent of Australian parents struggle to help their high school children with their homework. “It’s a source for a lot of stress, anxiety and arguments, and it’s really important for parents to find a way to be supportive,” he said. Mr Goodman said one great way to get help when parents can’t assist is to access free professional online tutoring through Penrith City Library. “Penrith Library subscribes to YourTutor that connect students for free, all you need is a Penrith City Library card,” he said. The struggle for primary school students is that according to a recent study commissioned by BIC Australia, only half of them are practicing handwriting at home on a daily basis. neat handwriting through a ‘pen licence’ program gets kids practicing proper hand grip and clearer letters. “Children need to write greater volumes when they get to high school and for assessments and if we don’t develop good writing styles when they’re young, they will get a sore hand. Children are sitting there shaking their hand after writing half a page,” she said. BIC Australia ambassador, Louise Park, said handwriting improves the muscle memory, fine motor skills and selfconfidence of students in and out of the classroom. “Handwriting is a critical piece in the literacy and learning puzzle, because when a child writes by hand, memory recall and word and letter recall are proven to be much stronger,” she said. “The cognitive processes required to write by hand can’t be reproduced in any other way, so it’s important for parents to help foster a love of writing both in and outside of the classroom.” Ms Park encouraged parents to think of fun and new ways to get kids writing at home, like writing highlights from their weekend, or writing letters to family. #visitpenrith COUNCIL BRIEFS ● This week Penrith hosted the national release of new data highlighting the inequity between the infrastructure and services enjoyed by the established suburbs close to Australia’s capital cities and those in the growth areas on their outskirts. The research by the National Growth Areas Alliance is the first to put a dollar figure on the backlog in infrastructure spending and shows that 5,000,000 Australians living in fast growing suburbs lack equal access to roads, public transport and health. It suggests that nationally, around $5 billion is needed each year for the next 15 years to ensure those of us living on the outskirts of capital cities have similar access to infrastructure and services as our neighbours living closer to the city centres. We need your help! very school in the state is starting the school year with an extra layer of protection for their students after the completion of the school zone flashing lights program. NSW Premier Mike Baird, Minister for Roads Duncan Gay and Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli made the announcement late last week that the roll out was now complete and that every school in the state now has at least one school zone sign with flashing lights. “We’ve met our commitment in full – more than 2,400 school zone flashing lights have been installed since 2011 meaning every eligible school in NSW is now covered,” Mr Baird said. The roll out to Penrith schools was completed early last year with the potential for more lights to come to the riskiest entrances to schools, with no mention of which schools will be covered yet. Executive Director for Road Safety, Bernard Carlon, said the program is a huge win for Penrith.

By law,
“Every school in NSW with a school zone, including those in Penrith, is now covered by school zone flashing lights,” he said. “That’s a huge road safety milestone and a real win for our most vulnerable road users.” During the peak of the roll out – between May 2015 and September 2015 – the lights were delivered at a record rate of around 150 schools per month. Road safety experts consulted with schools during the roll out to ensure flashing lights were installed where road safety benefits could be maximised. The flashing light program is one of the vital road safety programs funded through speed and red light camera fines by the Community Road Safety Fund. Around 400 schools with multiple busy entrances are expected to receive more flashing lights sometime during 2016. Every school zone in NSW is marked with high visibility fluorescent signs, dragons teeth and ‘40’ pavement patches so that drivers know they are entering a school zone and need to slow down.

About 9am on Tuesday, February 2, officers attached to St Marys Local Area Command were called to reports a woman had been assaulted outside a hotel on Queen Street by a man armed with a firearm.
Police attended, however the man and the injured woman had left the scene. Initial inquiries have led police to believe the injured woman is a 31-yearold local. She was last seen wearing floral pyjamas and pink socks. As police continue their inquiries, they would like to speak to both the man in the incident, and the injured woman.

Fowler: Penrith is “paying the price” Long commutes, overloaded roads and trains and increased pressure – it needs to be fixed now DALE DRINKWATER
enrith Council’s push for a rail line linking Narellen, the western Sydney airport, St Marys and Rouse Hill is fuelling a national campaign to develop a dedicated Federal infrastructure fund. The National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) launched ‘Fund our Future’ at The Joan on Monday, to change Government policy to address a $50 billion national roads, rail and health backlog. NSW NGAA spokesperson and Penrith Deputy Mayor, Ross Fowler, said an infrastructure fund will provide adequate roads, public transport and health in fast growing outer suburbs like Penrith. “In western Sydney, we are already at breaking point... both Federal and State [Governments] have failed to plan for, fund and build infrastructure in areas like western Sydney,” he said. “Our community is now paying the price through long commutes, overloaded roads and trains, loss of productivity for business, and most importantly pressure on families.” Cr Fowler said the Federal Government’s current $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infra-
P
structure Plan to support growth around the western Sydney airport is just playing catch-up. “By the time it is completed, these roads will be full of cars, not only with people going to the airport, but people going to work across western Sydney,” he said. Cr Fowler said efficient and adequate infrastructure like rail will provide easy access to employment areas around the airport and address a jobs shortfall in western Sydney. Board Member for the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, Greg Allchin, said population growth in western Sydney has brought a substantial increase in pressure on health facilities. “At the Nepean Hospital over Christmas our emergency presentations went up to 103 per cent, with people laying on beds in hallways and ambulance bays,” he said. By 2031, $73 billion of infrastructure in outer growth areas around Australia will be needed to cater for the growing populations – that’s $4.9 billion a year. A spokesperson for Lindsay MP Fiona Scott said he hoped ‘Fund our Future’ was not just a publicity stunt. “What they are calling for are things Fiona has been delivering on for years,” the spokesperson said.

Green light for new look station Work on upgrades to Penrith Station to begin by the middle of 2016 DALE DRINKWATER
ransformational upgrades to the way commuters will access Penrith Station are one step closer. The planning approval for major upgrades to the station has been received by the State Government, meaning thousands of commuters to and from Penrith are closer to better infrastructure. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres announced the upgrades that will improve security and access for all commuters. “The improvements include new lifts and stairs to the platforms, an upgraded station concourse, improved bus, taxi, and kiss and ride areas, and upgrades to lighting and CCTV, he said. With an extra one million people expected to be in the Penrith catchment by 2031, Mr Ayres said the upgrades will cater to the community for many years to come. “The upgrade is designed to provide a better customer experience and increase capacity for future growth in the region, he said. “This upgrade at Penrith Station will make catching public transport a much more attractive option.
T
An artist’s impression of the new look Penrith Station Mr Ayres confirmed a contractor is already on board and will begin construction by the middle of this year, a huge win for commuters. Penrith Station is just one part of a wider station upgrade program, to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure in NSW. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said western Sydney has been a
major winner in the Government’s Transport Access Program. “Better access to public transport in western Sydney has and will always be a key priority for this government, he said. Mr Constance said the Transport Access Program will make life easier for public transport customers using stations in Pendle Hill, Blacktown, Wentworth Falls and Flemington.
HEALTHY HAROLD HEALTHY HAROLDYOU! WANTS YOU! WANTS
“We know there’s plenty of work still to do which is why there are plenty of stations in the region, like Penrith, that will be upgraded in coming years, he said. “Whether it’s helping people like the elderly, the less mobile, and people with disability access their local station more easily, or providing more parking for regular commuters near stations, we are tackling this head on.

WW21160
This week in Penrith we hosted the national release of new data proving what we’ve been saying for many years – there’s a huge inequity between the infrastructure and services enjoyed by the established suburbs close to Australia’s capital cities and those in the growth areas on their outskirts. The research is the first to put a dollar figure on the backlog in infrastructure spending and shows that 5,000,000 Australians living in fast growing suburbs lack equal access to roads, public transport and health. It suggests that nationally, around $5 billion is needed each year for the next 15 years to ensure those of us on the outskirts of capital cities have similar access to infrastructure and services as our neighbours living closer to the city centres. Successive governments have failed to fund and build the infrastructure that areas like Penrith need and deserve. Without a significant investment, we risk dividing cities along social and economic lines. The NGAA and its member councils, through the Fund our Future cam-
paign, will call for a dedicated national fund to address the backlog in health, rail and road infrastructure in fastgrowing outer suburbs and futureproof them, as they continue to grow. Fund our Future is unique in bringing together communities with similar issues from all over the country to demand a change from the top. Anyone who travels out of Penrith to work, even to other parts of western Sydney, particularly to the north and south, knows this pain only too well – spending hours on congested roads and struggling with infrequent public transport that doesn’t connect. As part of the campaign, our Council is working with Blacktown and Campbelltown Councils to get a firm commitment to deliver passenger rail connecting the North and South West growth centres before the western Sydney airport opens. We need your help! Please sign our petition calling for a dedicated infrastructure fund for the fast-growing outer suburbs across Australia like ours, visit www.fundourfuture.info or Twitter @FundourFutureAU.

ocal residents could ditch public transport and return to their cars if proposed changes to the Opal card go ahead. The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) is concerned that the changes will force people back onto already congested roads such as the M4 and the Great Western Highway. As reported by the Weekender last month, IPART proposes to scrap free travel after eight trips per week, and charge commuters for their 10 most expensive trips. A Penrith resident catching the train to and from the city five days a week during
L
5cm x 6.3cm = $50
peak times could see their weekly transport cost increase over 25 per cent, from $51.68 per week to $65 per week. WSROC President Tony Hadchiti said commuters in western Sydney face significant disadvantage if the changes go ahead. “The proposed changes to the Opal system unfairly burden long-distance commuters; exactly the people we want to entice away from road travel,” he said. “Removing these incentives leaves little enticement for regular travellers to make the switch to public transport; in some cases it may result in a return to driving.”

Social housing reform gets the tick of approval DALE DRINKWATER
$22 billion social housing reform could bring more affordable housing to Penrith. The NSW Government announced they will partner with community housing providers to build or replace 23,500 social and affordable homes across the state. Wentworth Community Housing CEO, Stephen McIntyre, welcomed the partnership amid increased housing prices across western Sydney and pressure on social and affordable housing. “We would expect our area to have a reasonable proportion of the new and replacement housing, which will enable us to directly house more people in our local communities,” he said. “Of course the increase in house prices and in rent has made the challenge for many people to get into affordable housing so much greater.” The program also includes transferring management of up to 35 per cent of social housing to community housing providers, that Mr McIntyre said will boost the quality of services. “It will enable us to provide a higher quality of service because of our well established partnerships with local
A
providers and the community,” he said. In addition to that, he said Wentworth are delighted to see a promised increase in the use of private rental assistance by 60 per cent. “It will provide more options for households to get assistance in addition to being on the social housing list, it’s a real viable alternative,” he said. However, while he is delighted the NSW Government has shown leadership, he said it’s important the Australian Government takes similar action. “The commonwealth has an important role to play, particularly as it controls tax and the welfare system, it also needs to bring forward a clear policy position,” he said. The 10 year ‘Future Directions in NSW Social Housing’ partnership is expected to ensure better community outcomes at a minimal cost to the taxpayer. Minister for Social Housing Brad Hazzard said the innovative partnership will put thousands of people in social housing on a better path. “While some people need social housing in the long term, for others it should be a stepping stone to employment. We will provide opportunities for those people to get training, find a job and move into the private rental market,” he said.

What sort of person would “dob” in someone who is so hard up they have to wash windows to try and make some money, causing them to be arrested and hit with a massive fine they cannot afford? (Police snapshot, Weekender January 29). Pretty pathetic. RACHEL IVES, VIA FACEBOOK

His appointment represents what is happening at our club with a changing of the guard and so many of our own home grown juniors coming through, as a fan this is great news. Australian of the Year Another Australia Day has come and gone and the selection of the ‘Australian of the Year’ is steeped in controversy yet again. It has become painfully obvious to the general public that there seems to be a selection preference for people with an agenda to push, when the emphasis should be on people who have provided meritorious service to the community in such areas as health, medical research, looking after the disabled and homeless, etc. There are enough Australians more deserving of the award who would not use their selection as a platform for their pet agendas. The whole system needs overhauling and there appears to be growing public opinion that the AOTY Award should be scrapped altogether. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY
Time for a change I actually find it quite silly that we still have an Australian of the Year. We pit hard working, exceptional Australians against each other in some sort of bizarre ritual where we feel a certain individual needs to be above others. I’m all for a ceremony recognising great Australians each year but I really think we’ve gone beyond having one prized individual. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, CRANEBROOK

NEW ACCOUNTANT? Western Sydney University’s Kingswood campus. Photo: Megan Dunn it’s important to remember the ATAR was developed as a management tool to rank school leavers for their academic performance. “It was developed to manage admission to university when the number of university places was highly restricted. As a consequence many universities have introduced a range of other tools by which they can assess a student’s potential,” she said. She said it’s not a new thing for universities to admit students through alternative entry schemes.

estern Sydney University (WSU) has defended itself against a leak of confidential figures, showing students with marks well below advertised cut-offs are getting into courses. The Sydney Morning Herald disclosed WSU’s 2016 admissions figures, that show students with Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks (ATAR) up to 40 points below cut-offs are being allowed into courses. According to the report, 5136 students with marks below the course cut-offs were offered places into courses such as business, teaching and engineering. A spokesperson for Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said while universities can take as many students as they wish to enrol, there is a standard for certain courses. “All students wanting to study teaching in NSW need to achieve three Band 5 HSC results, including one in English, or meet comparable academic standards,” he said. “NSW schools employ more than 80,000 teachers and the NSW Government wants the best and brightest students to become teachers.” However, a WSU spokesperson said

Is your child beginning their Disability Support
NDIS journey?
Not sure where or how to begin the transition?
Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. 3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.
Samaritans is a good place to start. As an experienced, local registered service provider with the National Disability Insurance Agency we provide quality disability support as individual as you are. Since 2012 Samaritans has worked extensively in the NDIS trial sites of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, and more recently Maitland, and is a highly experienced NDIS provider. We offer a range of flexible services and quality, personalised Child & Family Support. Samaritans gives you voice, choice and control.

Is love really in the air? We asked Penrith locals to reveal how they keep the romance alive Sally-Anne and Julian, South Penrith After 45 years of marriage, Sally-Anne and Julian Dalli still can’t keep their hands off each other. The Weekender caught the couple walking around Westfield holding hands, and were compelled to ask how they keep their romance alive. The couple reminisced over their first meeting in Blacktown, an uncanny place to meet when Mrs Dalli lived in Werrington and Mr Dalli lived in Sydenham. Mrs Dalli said as soon as she walked into a room and saw her future husband, she new she was going to marry him, and Mr Dalli knows why. “When I was young I used to have really, really curly hair,” he said. “It was golden with real tight curls, it was the best afro, and she had an afro too.” It was the 1960s, Motown was huge and perms were rife, but Mrs Dalli
dismissed it was their matching hair that brought them together. “It was Motown, that’s what it was,” she said. When asked what they do for Valentine’s Day, Mrs Dalli said they like to keep it simple. “I normally buy him a multi-coloured rose, that has four or five different colours in it, but we love to just sit down and have a nice meal at home with a glass of wine,” she said. To Mrs Dalli, the fact that they are still together after 45 years is the most romantic thing they could have done. Renee, Blaxland “My ex-boyfriend set up a little treasure hunt in my house,” she said. “He set up these little notes all over the place that were full of inside jokes. I had to follow the trail, and at the end was my gift that was a necklace.”

Penrith RSL Club is calling for applications from young men and women between 17 and 25 years of age to participate in this year’s Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge (KYLC). Education
Nothing will stop him achieving his goals JADE ALIPRANDI
homas Wells, like many other students, has just made the transition from primary school to high school. But for him, school won’t be the same. Thomas was born with Biliary Atresia – a rare disease of the liver. He started school at St Dominic’s College in Kingswood last week with his cousin Noah Kelly by his side. “It’s a real team effort that the two are putting in together,” Thomas’ mother, Yvette Wells said. After a liver transplant at nine-monthsold and one at nine-years-old, Thomas was well enough to leave the country last year for a holiday. Unfortunately he caught a bug on the trip and has now been put back on the transplant list for a third liver after his was damaged from his illness. That hasn’t stopped his positive attitude towards school, Mrs Wells said. “It’s a huge milestone to get to high school given where he has been, what he has gone through and what he has overcome,” she said. “We are so happy and proud of him and his positive outlook – he is really trying to
T
get to school every day but it does take a lot of energy to do so.” Thomas has been to school two days out of four so far, but is determined to keep going, with help from his school along the way. “The school has been really accommodating in all sorts of ways,” Mrs Wells said. “They do some check-ins to check that he is coping, both mentally and physically, and have different staff members throughout the day to keep an eye on him.” Simply getting from point A to point B can be difficult for Thomas. “Getting around the school can be quite hard for him as it takes a lot of energy, especially after being bed ridden,” Mrs Wells said. “High school is a big thing for him and meeting new friends will also be a tough challenge just because everything is so exciting but he only has so much energy.” Thomas is one of the faces of the Transplant Games to be hosted in Penrith in September this year. His positive and aspiring attitude continues as he hopes to one day go to college in America. For more information on the games and how to get involved, visit www.australiantransplantgames.com.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT COMPILED BY DALE DRINKWATER
Penrith City Council’s Invest in the New West campaign to upgrade parts of the city centre has received a strong response. Six high quality Expressions of Interest submissions have been made to Council for the Reserve Street site, a 4,337 metre squared site, forming part of the Living Well Precinct. The Living Well Precinct that sits just to the north of Nepean Village in the CBD will be a mixed development site with aged care facilities close to shopping. Council can now move on with the next step of the process, which includes finalising a short list of proponents.

After the great response to the first site, Council has decided to extend the length of time available for submissions to be made to the second site. The Union Road site has two locations in question, 3,836 metres squared in the east and 15,627 metres squared in the west. Expressions of Interest can now be submitted as one whole or two separate submissions until February 17. Council is looking to work collaboratively with partners to deliver bold and innovative development on these sites and hopes to shortlist proponents by the end of March this year. After shortlisting, a Request for Proposal process can get
underway to expand on successful proponents’ ideas to fit with Council’s vision. Council has received an application to fit out shop 54 to 55 in Westfield Penrith for a Nando’s. Currently, the shop with frontage on to Riley Street seems to be occupied by Suncorp Bank. The total cost of the works is estimated at $65,000, and Council is yet to determine whether the application will be approved or not. Adelaide Street in St Marys will see six more two storey units now Council has approved an application for development. The work that costs a whopping $900,000 will be to demolish the existing building on the block, and deliver residential units close to the St Marys CBD. Penrith Council’s first Council meeting of 2016 is an Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday, February 8 at 7.30pm. The Community Panel is set to deliver its suite of recommendations to Council next Monday. Members spent a combined total of more than 1500 hours on the Panel to come up with their report.

Christie Lamb on the red carpet at the Tamworth Country Music Awards JADE ALIPRANDI
estern Sydney University (WSU) graduate Christie Lamb was one of only two women to win an award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival when she was named Best New Talent. The 23-year-old, who studied a Bachelor of Music at Penrith’s WSU campus, was the only independent artist to win an award on the night. “I’d been travelling to Tamworth for 10 years to play my songs on the street and see my favourite artists, and to now be sharing the stage with them is an amazing feeling,” Christie said. Christie studied in Penrith from 2010 to 2012 and also toured during that time.
W
“During the last year of my degree I was touring Australia with rock legend Jon English, which forced me to make some sacrifices – I still remember sitting around at parties finishing my assignments on the laptop,” she said. Christie was lucky enough to accept her award on the night from country music icon Lee Kernaghan. “I’ve been touring the country with him for the Songs and the Stories Tour so it’s still pretty surreal, but it’s starting to sink in now that I’m back home and the Golden Guitar is sitting on my piano,” she said. “What an amazing 12 months I have had, and this award just topped it all off and was a dream come true. “Thank you to everyone who has supported my journey so far.”

BUSINESS W do you run Why your own business? yo
Working ‘on’ your business and not ‘in’ it

hat is it that keeps you running your own business and working for yourself? Are there times when you wonder what you are doing and whether you’ve made the right choice? Many of my reasons for running my business is the flexibility it gives me. I can work around family commitments (and my favourite classes at the gym!), and I can take holidays when they suit me. But of course, we all know the flipside of those same advantages. At times, being flexible can also mean working nights and weekends to make up for those ‘lost’ hours. Taking holidays ‘whenever I want’ is only true to a degree: if I am consistently unavailable to my clients or take so much time off that I am unable to complete jobs, I will lose clients. Honestly, the only thing I have to do if I ever get overwhelmed with work is to imagine working for someone else again, and it quickly snaps me back! I love being responsible for all the decisions (well, most of the time!) and
being able to choose the direction and the type of work I do is a great privilege for me. But some of you might read that and find yourself missing the security of a regular pay cheque. Or yearning for the time when you didn’t have ultimate responsibility for every decision. And that is completely OK! Running a business doesn’t suit every personality and it also doesn’t suit every season in life. There are times when working for someone else is a really great decision, and other times, that passion that got you in to your business in the first place might call you back. Whatever you decide, the important thing is to be decisive! Don’t keep going in a direction that you know is not right for you. As this Chinese proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now”. It’s never too late to make a change: whether that is stay with what you are doing, or starting something completely different.
N
o matter what stage you are in after starting up your business, finding the time to work on your longer term strategy and actually growing your business is one of the most common challenges for small business owners. But if you want to grow your business beyond just yourself, you need to make the time. It’s a challenge I enjoy, helping business owners scale up is what every advisor should take the most satisfaction from. Building a business doesn’t take just a couple of dollars and good decisions. It takes serious thought and research, some capital and determination. However, the execution and management is easier today due to technology. Make sure you are making the right investments in the right place and you will see your business flourish. Automate as much as possible Time-consuming, yet important business processes such as invoices, payments, and email marketing can all be automated, reducing time spent on each.
There are numerous options including apps that can automate these processes like Evernote and Xero. Make your stage and size an advantage Being small probably means you wear many hats and don’t have the luxury of a big budget or team. However, it also means you can move fast, make decisions rapidly, and connect with your customers much more effectively than larger companies. Owners sometimes get caught up in managing processes, and don’t think about improving processes. Embrace your agility. Take the time to invest in the right people and get to know your customers. Hire a virtual assistant Your time is too valuable to waste it on simple tasks like constructing templates, designing and general administration. Modern technology like instant message (IM) and video conferencing make it seem like your right hand man is with you, even if they’re in another time zone. You’ll save money on fixed overhead costs as well.

The McCarthy Lane Cemetery in 1990. Photo: Penrith Lakes Development Corporation
A hidden part of our history
E
ncompassed by the expansive and rapidly changing Penrith Lakes, one tiny little memory of Penrith’s past still remains. Overgrown and standing alone, the McCarthy Lane Cemetery at the end of McCarthy Lane in Castlereagh has been closed off to the community for years. The only access available for family members of the deceased is to schedule in advance to be let through the locked gates. Not associated with a particular church
building, the 210-year-old cemetery changed from a private burial ground to the oldest Roman Catholic cemetery in NSW. In 1806, early settlers James and Mary McCarthy buried their daughter Elizabeth at the site, which was then the southern end of their Cranebrook property. In 1835 it was consecrated by Bishop Bede Poling and then became a cemetery for many more Catholics in the community. It was at a time when Catholicism was not officially recognised in the colony, and thus the McCarthy cemetery was one of the first Catholic cemeteries in Australia.
According to Penrith Lakes Corporation, the McCarthy Lane Cemetery is a rare example of a highly intact rural community cemetery. Due to its association with early settlers and despite being located in the middle of a major project by the State Government (Penrith Lakes Scheme), the McCarthy Lane Cemetery is still of local significance. It has an ongoing connection with the community and the families who continue to visit the grave of their relatives, and will for years to come. No matter what happens around it, this important part of history will remain.

Just weeks before last year’s State Election, the Weekender’s February 6 issue shed light on the likelihood that Penrith will be the next home of a major new sports stadium. The pipe dream was for a 35,000 seat venue to be the new home for the Penrith Panthers and be open to facilitate other sporting franchises. Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, who was re-running for the seat in the election in March, said their Infrastructure Strategy highlighted the needs for stadiums in the east, centre and west. “We are working through that, and most importantly for the first time in a very long time, we have the funds to deliver it,” he said. Allianz Stadium was chosen to see an upgrade, and Parramatta had to battle it out with ANZ, leaving little competition for Penrith’s Stadium as the outer western option. “We’re very hopeful and still reasonably confident that Penrith will be the location,” Mr Ayres said. Since, a decision has been made to upgrade Allianz Stadium and Pirtek Stadium with an upgrade for an outer western Sydney stadium a possibility in the distant future. Also, the Wanderers were in town to play their first ever A-League match at Pepper Stadium.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Search is far from over KATE REID
“
There was no sex, no drugs and a bit of rock ‘n’ roll.” That’s the way Frank Allen from The Searchers describes his time in the whirlwind that was the music scene in England in the 1960s. Performing alongside bands like The Beatles it was a defining period for music, but Frank explains that while the band enjoyed commercial success they didn’t really indulge in many of the usual rock star clichés. “We were not the people to take advantage in any unfortunate kind of way, we weren’t the Rolling Stones or people like that,” he said. “We were more like Mother Theresa, we were the goody goodies of the whole thing. We lived very proper, quiet lives, really.” Though their private lives may have been quiet, their professional lives were anything but. The Searchers emerged from the 1960s Liverpool scene along with contemporaries The Beatles, The Hollies and Gerry and The Pacemakers.
When Frank joined The Searchers – who he had met earlier while a member of another successful Liverpool band – in 1964, they already had three number one hits. “My accidental friends were now international superstars, it was amazing,” he said. “Suddenly joining a band who were known all over the world and almost immediately going off to America to play with people like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and people like that, was just the most incredible thing.” While we now look back on the 60s as one of the most defining eras in music history, the future impact of this period wasn’t apparent at the time to a band whose members were still in their late teens and early twenties. “I don’t think we were quite mature enough to realise how important it was,” Frank said. “We were all taken aback by the speed with which everything took off. “This is all down to The Beatles, they created such havoc in the music industry that suddenly anyone in a band had the chance to have a recording contract.” It’s been more than 50 years since the band formed and The Searchers are still

touring regularly, including an upcoming Australian tour. While it would be easy to take the cynical view that it’s all about the money, Frank says he lives a comfortable life and no longer relies on the financial side of what he does. Instead he explains that the continued touring comes down to three things: still having an audience who want to see them perform, being healthy enough to
tour and the most important reason of all: passion. “The main thing is you’ve got to enjoy what you do and we love what we do, it’s great,” he said. “If we stopped enjoying it that would be a good reason to stop.” The Searchers will be performing at the Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, March 5 at 8pm. Tickets are $25. For more information, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

OUT NOW WON T UO GAME
CINEMA Dirty Grandpa
Rated MA // KATE REID When you think crude comedy flick Robert De Niro is not exactly the first name that comes to mind. Starring alongside hot guy of the moment Zac Efron, De Niro fans will see the Academy Award winning actor in a whole new light with the new comedy flick ‘Dirty Grandpa’. The story revolves around the uptight young lawyer Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) who is about to marry his boss’ daughter, Meredith (Julianne Hough), a move that will help him progress his career within the law firm. But all that is put in jeopardy when his foul-mouthed grandfather Dick (Robert De Niro) tricks Jason into taking him to spring break in Daytona.
There’s been enough of these sort of road-trip-gone-wrong flicks for audiences to know what happens next. The pair find themselves dealing with frat parties, bar fights, karaoke and plenty of awkward situations. It might not be everybody’s cup of tea but if you love comedy flicks, and are not easily offended, then ‘Dirty Grandpa’ might be the movie for you.
DVD The Intern Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo
PS4 & XBox One // KATE REID Racing fans have a new game to add to their collection with the release of ‘Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo’. Named after the French professional rally and race driver, ‘Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo’ is an off-road racing game that will give gamers the chance to drive some of the best rally cars through the most exhilarating rallies in the world. The game was created in collaboration with Sebastien and features around 300 kilometres of tracks, eight different rallies, five rally cross tracks, 10 different game modes and more than 50 car models from over 20 car manufacturers. ‘Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo’ also features a reproduction of the most heart-stopping hill climb in the world: Pikes Peak. This is a must for any gamer who loves their racing fast and dirty. The game has been released on PS4, XBox One and PC and has received mostly positive reviews so far. Released on January 29, the game is expected to do well in Australia, especially with lovers of racing games. Worth a look.

Rated M // JADE ALIPRANDI Comedic and light-hearted, ‘The Intern’ is exactly what you would expect it to be and that little bit more. When Ben (Robert De Niro) is unsatisfied with retirement, he seizes the opportunity to take up a senior internship role at an ever-growing online fashion company run by Jules (Anne Hathaway). Ben proves throughout the film how the older generation is still relevant to the working world while Jules points him in the right direction along the way, slowly immersing him into the fastpaced culture of today. Hathaway and De Niro bounce off each other in a way some might think would never be possible. Their chemistry is undeniable. It was refreshing to see De Niro in a role that’s somewhat different from what he has done previously. His character was calm, well-mannered and the perfect gentleman which was nice to see. Hathaway played her part perfectly and pulled off the over-the-top yet mellow CEO and founder of a hip online fashion company to a tee. It does feel like a somewhat ‘fluffy’
film because it so light-hearted but one that is very enjoyable to watch. Suitable for all ages, the film tugs at the heart strings as you see the relationship between Jules and Ben develop into a strong friendship. The story is perfectly portrayed and
437 High St Penrith (Opposite Memory Park)
you can definitely learn a lesson or two from it. Nothing is too over-the-top with this film with the perfect balance of laughter, warmness and enjoyment. It’s not one to miss and is out on DVD now.

WINE LIST
DAVID ELLIS
Watch out for this one!
P
ut your money on it, a variety to watch in this country in the not-too-distant future is Vermentino, a hugely popular drop in Europe where it’s somewhat bizarrely known under 41 different synonyms – including Favorita de Conegliano, that for probably good reason for those who fight them in the field, translates to “the rabbit’s favourite”. And interestingly in some regions of Europe, it’s proving the first wine in years capable of knocking Sauvignon Blanc off its perch. The principal white grape of Sardinia and Corsica, Vermentino has only been grown in this country with any real intent since around the year 2000, which is a bit strange because it’s a variety that can handle the extreme heat of some of our hottest vineyard regions with ease. In the largest of these, the NSW Riverina, Calabria Family Wines at Griffith has just released a 2015 Private Bin Vermentino that’s all about delightful lemongrass and lime zest, and a palate of green apple, lime and almond, and a racy acidity. At an enticing $15, this is a great drop to serve chilled with bruschetta, tomato, basil and red onion, or with seafoods such as crab linguine with chilli and parsley. One to note: From the high altitude, cold climate of Orange in NSW’s Central West, winemaker Peter Logan has released a ripper 2015 Weemala Pinot Noir you’ll find an absolute joy with a good summertime’s cheese platter.
The result of mild, sunny and dry weather that characterised the 2015 vintage, this is one of those wonderfully food-friendly wines that you’ll find that as well as with the cheese platter, with its delicate, light-bodied elegance it will also make for a great match with rich game and meat dishes. At $19.95, beaut value with either choice. Another one to note: A 2015 Margan Family Winemakers’ Chardonnay is a triple whammee from winemaker Andrew Margan. And that’s because it’s made from fruit off lowyielding 40-year-old vines, those vines thrive in the renowned volcanic soils of the Hunter Valley’s Broke Fordwich, and this great drop’s just $20 a bottle. Creamy textured with nutty oak aromas and a natural acid finish, this is a drop with all the attractions of the best of Chardonnays – and don’t let us hear you say “Not another Chardonnay” – with an unusual mandarin after-taste. Enjoy this versatile drop with a variety of summery dining ideas… crab cakes and salad, good old roast chicken or a creamy chicken pie, or a Caesar salad. Are you a wine drinker? We’d love to hear about your favourite wine. Drop us a line via email at news@westernweekender.com.au or call us on 4722 2998. You can also contact us via post by writing to Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown NSW 2750.

LIFE & STYLE PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
The New Moon and Uranus bring out your independent side, which can express itself as selfishness. By all means do your own thing, but don’t neglect the needs of others. Attached Aries – do something wildly romantic with your partner on Valentine’s Day, as you strive to bring more adventure and excitement into the relationship. Love at first sight is likely for some single Rams. But is it really long-term love, or just a flirtatious fling?
Joanne Madeline

HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
How’s your career? Are you overdue for a pay rise? Is it time to look for a better job? This week the challenge is to make work a pleasure, rather than a chore. Wednesday is a wonderful day to enjoy connecting with foreign friends via email, Skype and social networking. And make sure you put in a major effort this Valentine’s Day. “Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone. It has to be made like bread, remade all the time, made new” [Ursula Le Guin].
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
You’re at your curious best, as the New Moon stimulates your brain so you’re eager to learn something new via travel, study, reading or research. You prefer love to be all fun and frivolity, with no heavy demands. But it’s certainly not working out that way at the moment. With Saturn sauntering through your relationship zone, your quote is from William Barclay, “Love always involves responsibility, and love always involves sacrifice.”

Relationships are put under the microscope, as you work on deepening the connection between you and loved ones. It’s also the perfect time to reboot a joint financial arrangement. With Venus in your partnership zone, Valentine’s Day should be extra romantic. Singles – look for a potential partner who you can really talk to. “Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze” [Carolyn Gold Heilbrun].
LEO
You prefer to be the star of the show but, if you focus on others and pay close attention to the way you communicate, then your relationships will improve. Venus and Jupiter encourage you to come up with creative and proactive ways to make more money. Increasing cash flow – while decreasing spending – is the secret to future success. Your motto is from the writer George Sand: “There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.”
CAPRICORN
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Turn your attention to health, diet and fitness as the New Moon activates your wellbeing zone. Is some tweaking necessary so you can look and feel more fit and fabulous in 2016? When it comes to a child, teenager or friend, make sure you provide plenty of support. Attached Virgos – give your lover the right royal romantic treatment on Valentine’s Day. Singles – love, creativity and children are linked in surprisingly wonderful ways.
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Venus is vamping through your sign so it’s time to be fabulously flirtatious and irresistibly charming. Attached Capricorns – you’re set for a sophisticated and sexy Valentine’s Day. Romance, stylish surroundings and gourmet food are calling! Singles – love is likely with a tender Taurus, a charming Cancer or a fellow Capricorn. Or an old romance could be retrieved, revamped and rekindled but do you really want to do that dance again?
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
The New Moon fires up your entertainment zone, which may prompt you to swing into mega-party mode. For quieter Librans, the stars favour spending quality time with family and friends. When it comes to love, romance and close relationships are you feeling brave? Your quote is from Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
With the New Moon in your sign it’s time for a completely fresh start. You’re feeling independent and inventive [but also reckless and rebellious] so strive to use your electric energy in positive and productive ways. Attached Aquarians – romance is in the air but the energy is behind the scenes suggesting a private, magical Valentine’s Day. Singles – amazing signs and unexpected synchronicities could lead you to your soul mate. Trust your instincts.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Monday night’s New Moon puts you in the mood to shake up your domestic routine. So do something different that makes your heart sing. Wednesday is wonderful for group activities and social media, as you’re influenced by innovative new ideas. True love comes when the time is right so resist the urge to be a controlling Scorpio. As Loretta Young declared, “Love isn’t something you find. Love is something that finds you.”

Better Traveling by Coach in Australia
Holidays / Vacations Coach tours across, through and around Australia have opened many opportunities for tourists over the years. We can travel locally in NSW or extensively through the heartlands. At every turn though, Australian coach travel can take us to places and events that entertain and mesmerise. We may have even passed these places and sights numerous times without noticing the before. As the demand for better services and comforts has grown, the coach travel industry has had to adapt to fill that demand. Luxury air-conditioned coach transport has become a favourite option for the over 55’s groups from all sectors of the community. All it takes is the one group organiser to negotiate the better deals and when that is done the holiday starts. Passengers appreciate the fact that they are free to absorb the changing Australian scenery as they pass through cities, mountains and along coastlines. It is a great opportunity to be able to see what you would usually miss when you drive yourself. There are a multitude of destinations and
day tour activities that are being offered to the discerning coach traveller. Most packages on offer will include accommodation, meals, group activities and sights as an all-inclusive itinerary and price. Group organisers can usually negotiate these with the coach operator and finalise the perfect itinerary right down to the last morning tea. The experienced coach drivers are the ones that can spin you a yarn, share experiences (and a touch of humour) with everyone. Professional and courteous, these are the people that ensure a comfortable and safe ride. In some cases there is the ‘hostie’ with the ‘mostie’ – available to ensure that everyone is travelling in comfort and the finer details of the tour. It is these ‘crew’ members that keep the happy customers coming back for another destination time and time again. Coach companies like Avid Travel build their reputation on good old fashioned service and warm welcomes. It’s the simple things in life that make the difference between just travel and a coach holiday.
Our local coach charter business, Avid Travel, designs day tours and holidays with passenger enjoyment and comfort in mind. Destinations that are chosen are suitable for the clients needs. Old fashioned assistance is offered for those that are not so mobile. With plenty of

I was a child in the 70s. A time when pools weren’t necessarily fenced and water safety was much more relaxed. I remember almost coming to harm in the water twice – at the beach, an older child pulled me up from under the water, and in a backyard pool another child alerted my parents when I dived head first into a shallow pool, severely winding myself, but thankfully not breaking my neck. I also remember playing breath holding games, seeing how long I could last underwater or how far I

as Hypoxic Blackout, can occur when people hold their breath underwater, or are practising underwater breath holding drills whilst swimming, and it happens without any warning of its onset. The swimmer simply loses consciousness due to a severe lack of oxygen to the brain, and drowns. Hyperventilation performed before breath holding increases the dangers, as does repetitive or competitive breath holding. No one is immune to SWB, from children to competitive swimmers. Swimming Australia and ASCTA (Australian Swimming Coachers and Teachers Association) recently released a position statement stating that “Hypoxic training has no place in the recreational or Learn To Swim environment”, and should only be performed in competitive swimming training under strict guidelines and supervision. Swimming Australia advise that we should never swim alone, never ignore the urge to breathe, never hyperventilate prior to swimming, and never play breath holding games and challenges. So please spread the word, as tragedies due to shallow water blackout are completely preventable.

PET HEALTH
Travelling in the car with your pets
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
You need to make sure that a pet crate is well secured and cushioned in case of sudden braking. Most dogs are comfortable with a specially designed seatbelt harness. It is law in NSW that all dogs are secured in the car. Be aware that some cars contain airbags and these can be very dangerous for dogs when deployed. It is often best to sit them in the back seat. If you have a cargo compart-
ment where your dog travels ensure that it has a partition and is well cushioned for sudden stops. During the trip it is important to stop often so your pet can stretch their legs, go to the toilet and burn off some energy. Small breaks hourly with a longer break every four hours are recommended. Always have your pet on a lead when you stop and make sure that your microchip details are up to date. Ensure that all dogs have a collar with your contact number on it in case your pet is lost. Try to make the rest stops in the shade and never leave your pet unattended in the car. Many pets sleep in the car but many become restless just like young children. It might seem fun to let your dog stick its head out of the window but this is dangerous. They can be hit by objects or fall out of the window. It also makes them susceptible to ear and eye irritations. Preparing your pet for car trips is also important. Get them used to lots of short trips. Some pets suffer from anxiety or car sickness in the car. Medications are often useful in these cases. A travel kit is also a great idea. Include water and food bowls, a supply of cool water, some toys and chews for the trip and a small supply of dog food.

Planning a big trip in 2016? Looking to snag a bargain purchase or two with your Christmas gift cards or cash? At a time of year typically reserved for reduced prices, big sales and getting your wardrobe in order for the New Year, we’ve compiled some simple tips to make sure you get the most value for your Christmas money this month. Shop online During 2014, the ABS released figures which found three out of four Internet users shop online. This year, finder.com.au predicted that

Australian consumers could spend up to $2.26 billion online over the post-Christmas period. Eliminating the pressure and stress of fighting through crowds to score the last pair of boots on the shelf could eliminate purchase regret and heat of the moment decisions. Browse multiple online sites to get a sense of how discounts compare across
outlets. Chances are you could find a better deal elsewhere – all from the comfort of your armchair! Plan ahead Planning a trip in 2016? It’s a good idea to take a look at travel and booking sites to check out their New Year sales. Many travel companies offer discounts on flights and accommodation at this time of year. The first quarter of the year is the slowest time for airline travel, so it’s a great time to book in advance to score a good price. Companies are unveiling their “early bird” offers – so if you know when and where you want to travel, why wait? Don’t forget that if you’re a BOQ customer you are eligible to receive 10 per cent off Virgin Australia domestic flights or flights booked until June 10, 2016, travelling up to June 30, 2016. It’s also worth checking out the Q Rewards Travel Centre for the latest travel offers on flights, accommodation, car hire and activities. Use your rewards Don’t forget that credit card rewards programs like Q Rewards offer a simple and convenient way to pay your recurring expenses and everyday purchases whilst earning points, a great way to score a bargain!

Summertime means many trips to the park, beach, friends’ places and holidays. It is important to plan ahead when travelling with your pets. Most dogs and cats will travel well if they are accustomed to car travel and a few tips can make your trip smooth and easy. It is important to restrain your cat or dog whilst travelling. The way you do this will depend on the size and breed of your pet and the size and type of car you have. Cats and some smaller dogs travel best in a crate or cat cage as they feel secure when confined.

LEGAL MATTERS
In the last three months the real estate market in NSW has undergone significant change. Real estate agents are now legally required to be much more accurate when advertising property prices to prevent potential buyers from being misled as to what price the seller is expecting for the property. In addition to this, we have seen a “softening” of the market which has seen prices throughout Sydney level out in recent weeks. The result has been that we can see a market that is still quite active as sellers scramble

to take advantage of what remains of the robust seller’s market we have seen over the last two years, and buyers begin to swoop on properties that they consider to be good value as prices slowly come down. This transitional phase can mean great results for both buyers and sellers who are savvy. If you are thinking of selling your property, always remember the following:
1. Do I have any “unfinished business” such as inspections or Council approvals I need to get done before I sell? 2. If I have a swimming pool, have I had it registered with Council and do I have my Registration Certificate? 3. Have I picked an Agent who is up to date with recent changes to the law? If you are buying, always remember the following: 1. Have I seen a Finance Broker to obtain pre-approval to ensure that I do not risk losing my deposit if my finance falls through? 2. Given that I take the property “as is” subject to any problems it has, has my solicitor arranged a pest and building report for me? 3. Have I met with my solicitor to discuss the contract to ensure there are no unexpected surprises? If you have any questions about buying or selling property, contact our expert property team before going to market. We will talk you through the process free of charge. Do you have a legal issue you’d like Daniel to tackle via this column? Email news@ westernweekender.com.au or give our office a call on 4722 2998.

RELIGION
While many people will know the expression “sticks and stones might break my bones but names will never hurt me”, the question we need to consider is, is it true? Do names hurt us? Can words have a negative impact on us? We might like to think they don’t, yet the reality is, name calling, bullying, and the words we use, can and do, have a big impact on our lives. Increasingly, we see the terrible effect of either the deliberate or careless use of words. Sadly, people use words to

hurt and those hurts leave scars on our lives which are sometimes very difficult to heal, if they are healed at all. The Apostle Paul, in the Bible’s book of Ephesians speaks to an issue like this when he says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Food offers a long list of benefits. From health to wellbeing to pleasure, there are many reasons why food is such an important part of our lives. But as beneficial as food is, it’s important to be realistic about its limitations. With that in mind I thought I’d run through some of the common myths that I’ve noticed when it comes to food. Food is not a replacement for medicine Is a healthy diet an important foundation for good health? Yes. Should you rely on food alone to cure or treat
Busting some common food myths Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong.

kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
It seems so simple; using our words to build people up rather than cut them down. Using our words to encourage rather than condemn. Using words like “thank you”, “well done”, “good effort”, “great to see you”. Looking for opportunities to use our words to support and give confidence, rather than getting involved in brawling, bitterness, rage, anger, slander or gossip. Because we know how words can hurt and damage us, we know how important it is to use our words for the good of others. Therefore, let us take note of what God says to us in His Bible and be consciously aware of how what we say should be to the benefit others and not to their harm.
every disease or illness? No. It’s scary how many reports there are of people who have forgone traditional medicine for diet therapy, often with terrible consequences. Now don’t get me wrong, nutrition is an important aspect of good health. But to give your body the best chance to deal with any health issues that may arise, we need to be realistic about the limitations of food
and be able to recognise when medical treatment is required. Food will not make you happy Do you find yourself regularly bingeing on high fat/ sugar/salt foods when you’re feeling sad/angry/lonely etc? If so you’re definitely not alone. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying food, for some people it can become a coping mechanism to deal with underlying mental health issues. If you find yourself constantly relying on food to treat emotional distress it may be a good idea to seek help from a mental health professional. Food is not the be all and end all As a self confessed foodie (yes, I am one of those annoying people who takes arty photos of their food) that’s a hard statement to write, but as much as food is enjoyable and necessary for health and development there is a point at which we can become too obsessed. If you’re too restrictive with what you eat, often feel guilty about your diet, or find your life revolves around controlling your food intake, it may be time to take a deep breath and realise that food is just one aspect of a healthy and balanced life.

t’s not the start that Sydney Suspension & AutoCare were after for 2016, but things are starting to look up as they get set to move into their temporary location just metres down the road at 143 Coreen Ave, Penrith (next to the Caltex Service Station). After an electrical fire tore through their Coreen Avenue workshop early last month, the team at Sydney Suspension have been itching to get back to doing what they do best. While their original premises at 129 Coreen Avenue is still operational for limited services, parts sales and enquiries for the next few weeks, the team are preparing to move to their exciting new location. Owners Dean and Kylie Fitzpatrick believe, in the next few weeks, they will be fully up and running again, which is great news for locals. Since beginning over three years ago, Sydney Suspension has grown from being primarily a suspension and steering orientated business to now offering a full range of automotive services from General Servicing right through to Performance Tuning, Brake Repairs, Blue Slips, Pink Slips, Parts Sales and the list goes on. Of course they still specialise in
the steering and suspension side of things as always, but they really have become your one stop shop. Sydney Suspension’s professional team of technicians have over 60 years combined experience in the automotive industry. Their team is continually striving to exceed expectations when your vehicle is in their care. “The team have been exceptional over this past month but have made comments that they are ready to go… they just want to start working on cars again,” Dean and Kylie said. “The team are in really good spirits and everyone is excited to get the new workshop up and running, and getting everything back to normal again.” Dean, Kylie and the team would like to say a big thank you to all their valued customers for their patience and can assure those waiting that the wait will be worth it. “This workshop is going to be like no other and we can’t wait to share it with you,” Dean and Kylie said. Sydney Suspension & Autocare will soon be located at 143 Coreen Avenue, Penrith. For more information, call 4721 2112 or you can simply visit www.sydneysuspenion.com.au.

olden has introduced a Cruze Z-Series and Cruze SRi-Z to the 2016 small car range. First introduced in 2014, the Z-Series range has proved popular with customers searching for style, value and additional content. PARTNERSHIP
Ben Garcia will make his debut for the Panthers at the Auckland Nines this weekend. Photo: Megan Dunn NATHAN TAYLOR
he Penrith Panthers will unleash their strongest ever Auckland Nines squad this weekend when the 2016 rugby league season finally gets underway at Eden Park. Apart from a few good games in the competition’s debut year (2014), the Panthers have predominantly failed to deliver in Auckland, but that could all change this weekend with Penrith going into this year’s event as fourth favourites. New Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has put together a stellar side made up of household names and young up and comers.
T
One player heading to Auckland for the experience is new Panthers recruit and young Frenchman Ben Garcia. Speaking with the Weekender, the 22-year-old lock said he was looking forward to the fun and excitement of the fast-paced competition. “I’m really excited to go to Auckland, I’ve never been there before and it’s a great opportunity,” he said. “I hope we do really well, I can’t wait.” Garcia joined the Panthers on a two-year deal after spending a number of seasons at English Super League club, Catalans Dragons. Before his stint in the Super League, Garcia played with the Brisbane Broncos Holden Cup team as well as the Wynnum
Manly Queensland Cup team, where he won a premiership under then coach Paul Green back in 2012. In 2013, he made his debut with the French national team at the Rugby League World Cup. Garcia said after experiencing a few successful years in Australia, he always wanted to return for another crack. “My first season in Brisbane we won the Q-Cup with Paul Green as coach and the second year I played 20 games with the Broncos U20’s before moving to Catalans,” Garcia said. “It was always my dream to play in the NRL, so I’m really thankful Phil Gould got in touch with my manager to bring me back to Australia.
“It’s a great opportunity and Penrith is a really good club.” Since arriving at Pepper Stadium in October last year, Garcia admitted he was finally feeling settled in his new surrounds with his only teething problem being the language barrier. “I’m still learning English, but by hanging out with the boys a lot I’m improving,” he said. The Panthers fly out to Auckland today. The tournament is shown on Fox Sports. Penrith’s Auckland Nines team: E Taylor, T Martin, D Watene-Zelezniak, J Latimore, B Cartwright, Z Dockar-Clay, R Jennings, B Garcia, J Mansour, I Yeo, C Harawira, S Matagi, S Katoa, J Segeyaro, M Leota, W Smith, W Blake and C Smith.

anthers mentor Anthony Griffin says coaches play a key role in enforcing positive player behaviour off the field. In the wake of the Mitchell Pearce scandal and an incident involving several young stars in Queensland this week, rugby league has again been thrown into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Griffin says as a coach, it’s important to give players the right guidance. “Like your kids you’ve got to give them the messages that you think are right and try to influence them so they make smart decisions or right decisions when they’re on their own,” Griffin told the Weekender. “You can’t be with them 24 hours a day so the biggest influence you can have over them is to try to help them make smart decisions.” Griffin said that players go through programs at both NRL and club level that deal with issues such as drugs and alcohol. “I don’t think they’ve ever been more scrutinised and that’ll only continue but in saying that I don’t think they’ve ever been more educated as well,” he said. “In the end it comes back to the individual but I think my role and certainly

Penrith Panthers coach Anthony Griffin the club’s role is to have an influence with the messages and examples you give them about what’s required to be part of the club.” Griffin said there’s no doubt that players needed to be more aware of their status in the community. “The thing we’ve all got to be aware of and the thing we teach our players is that they’re never out of sight these days with the way that communication is. That’s the way it is – it’s a high profile business and if you want to be in it you’ve got to move with the times and understand the pros and cons that come with it,” he said.

Kids get a Blast of Thunder Cricket program on its way to St Clair and Penrith in coming weeks NATHAN TAYLOR
n the back of Sydney Thunder’s success in the Women’s Big Bash League and Big Bash League last month, the passion for cricket in western Sydney is bigger than ever. Local boys and girls will have the chance to play like their Thunder heroes over the next few months when the Milo T20 Blast comes back to town. Cricket NSW, in association with local cricket clubs, will be running eight week T20 Blast programs across the greater Penrith region. T20 Blast is Cricket Australia’s entry level program for kids aged between seven and 12-years-old. Each session runs for 90 minutes and focuses on participation, fun and skill development. All cricket equipment is supplied and games take place at the same venue each week, at a local cricket club or community centre. The St Clair T20 Blast program will begin this Monday, February 8 at Cook and Banks Reserve while the Penrith program will commence next Tuesday,

Are you a kind, caring person that would love the chance to make a positive change in a dog’s life? What a smile! How great would it be to This girl came into the shelter on a pole as she wake up to this big goofy girl every day! was terrified and over the last few weeks she has She is such a happy dog that loves treats slowly come out of her shell. She is a timid girl and is always up for a cuddle. If her owners that has has some bad times in her life, she will don’t reclaim her she will be avaliable for play with toys but if you raise you hand to throw Adoption on the 12th of Feb. We always recommend bringing your own dogs to the shelter to meet any of the shelter dogs.
After being at the Shelter for 4 weeks this stunning girl still hasn’t found a home, she is a volunteer favourite as she is such a happy and friendly dog with whoever she meets. During her time at the shelter she has met a few different dogs and seems to be fine with others but bringing your own dog in for a meet and greet is always recommended.
Another stunning girl that is still waiting for a home, she had a great time with us in the exercise area running and playing with toys. She is a very happy and bubbly girl that is so deserving of a loving Forever Home. While with us she was playing with other dogs through the fence but we always recommend a meet and greet with your dog....
Look at the handsome face! This fella has been at the shelter since mid December and hasn’t had any luck with finding a home. He loves to run and play with toys, he did meet other dogs and was OK but he needs a submissive playmate. We always recommended a meet and greet with your dog before Adoption.
The shelter is in need of toys, blankets (not doonas or pillows though), treats and coats for large dogs. Please contact the shelter if you can help.

Not only will the world’s largest junior rugby league base celebrate the momentous occasion with another great year of on-field action, but it’ll also mark the beginning of a brand new partnership with the popular sport of OzTag. “Junior rugby league offers competitions for players from U6’s to A-Grade,” Penrith Junior League Manager, Phil Cummings said. “We also have female-only competitions for age groups between U13-15’s and U16-18’s, as well as NSW open age competitions. “Presently 22 clubs will play from Blacktown to Katoomba this junior rugby league season.” 2016 will also see the introduction of ‘Panthers Tag’ – an exciting new partnership with OzTag that will be offered as a Sunday competition and will include male and female age groups from U6’s through to U16’s. The 2016 Penrith and District Junior Rugby League season will officially commence on Saturday, April 16. For more information on the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League, visit playnrl.com.au or penrith.leaguenet.com.au and follow the links to either become a player, coach or volunteer at your local club.

Along with the event’s traditional 2km

It’s set to act as a great starting point for entry level swimmers and younger swimmers wanting a stepping stone to the longer distance races. The popular 2km race is one length of the main competition lake finishing at the grandstand end of the venue while the 5km race follows the same course as the 2km event then encircles the island and again finishes at the grandstand. All swimmers who complete their race

CRICKET: Penrith’s Round 11 match against Campbelltown-Camden ended in a draw after it was washed out last weekend due to bad weather. This Saturday the third-placed Penrith will return home to Howell Oval to take on the 18th-placed Hawkesbury in a two day match. The match against their western Sydney rivals sets up the Sydney Grade Competition’s Rivalry Round. CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club will play Bankstown this Sunday in the semi finals of the First Grade Limited Overs competition. Penrith qualified for the semis after an outstanding win over Blacktown on January 17, and will battle Bankstown for a place in the final at Bankstown Memorial Oval. The winner out of Penrith and Bankstown will take on the winner out of the weekend’s other semi final between Sydney and St George. The final will be played on March 6. BASEBALL: For the second weekend in a row, Penrith’s Round 16 weekend match against Ryde was washed out last Sunday due to bad weather. There was set to be a late change of venue for the clash but according to the Penrith Baseball Club, Ryde decided to pull the pin at the last minute. The Panthers will certainly hope for better weather this weekend when they battle Cronulla in Round 17 of
the NSW State Baseball competition. BASKETBALL: Any representative coaches who have not yet obtained the essential Club Coach Course (formerly Level 1), will be required to do so prior to the 2016 season. According to the Penrith Basketball Association, coaches should attend the BNSW conducted course by Saturday, February 20. The course is a great assistance to any club coaches wishing to gain further knowledge in coaching. For more information on the course, visit www.penrithbasketball.net. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers began their NPL2 journey in fine fashion last Sunday as they defeated the Marconi Stallions 8-0 at Blacktown International Sportspark. It was the first ever foray into NPL territory for the Wanderers and it began with a blast thanks to Josh Macdonald grabbing a double and Lachlan Scott scoring a five minute hat-trick after coming off the bench. Kyle Cimenti and Tariq Maia also grabbed goals as the Wanderers ran riot. Liam Reddy got his first run in Wanderers colours as Western Sydney started with a strong side that included a number of players with A-League caps. Next up for the Wanderers is their second pre-season match tonight, February 4 at Popondetta Park. They take on Mt Druitt Town Rangers.

t’s time to start daring to dream: The Western Sydney Wanderers are on track to claim their second ever Premier’s Plate. After a number of lean weeks which resulted in two straight losses and a draw, the Wanderers are currently in the midst of a two game winning streak after recent victories over Central Coast and Melbourne City. They have a two point lead at the top of the table as the business end of the competition gets underway. The Wanderers will look to extend their lead at the top of the A-League ladder when they battle Melbourne Victory this weekend. Last Friday night the Wanderers produced their best attacking display of the season so far, firing away four goals against a strong second placed Melbourne City outfit. Despite a late City flurry adding some respectability to the 4-3 scoreline, the result was never in doubt once Mitch Nichols scored his eighth goal of the season and Mark Bridge bagged a pair while a late strike from Brendon Santalab rounded out the scoring. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said it was an “extremely satisfying result”.
