wo Marrickville locals are among 29 people from NSW and Norfolk Island awarded 2012 Churchill Fellowships. The Churchill Fellowship recipients will undertake a diverse range of research projects that aim to enrich knowledge and practice across fields in Australia as diverse as health, education, the environment, the arts and music. “Every one of the recipients has demonstrated dedication and a thirst for knowledge in their respective fields of expertise,” Paul Tys, CEO of The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, said. “We can be certain that these 29 people from NSW and Norfolk Island will make a tangible diff erence to the lives of every Australian in one way or another in the years to come.” The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust was established after the death of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965 in accordance with Mr Churchill’s fi nal wishes. The Trust has funded more than 3,700 Fellowships for Australians. With an average value of more than $20,000 per Fellowship, recipients have the opportunity to travel overseas to further their passion and return to Australia to implement their fi ndings and share them with others. Fellowship recipient and Marrickville resident, Matthew

E Ed gert ge rton o will on wii ll l b foll llow ow w in ingg in Mr Edgerton, bee fo following Churchill’s own words, offering up his own blood, toil, tears and sweat to shape the use of theatre as a tool for social development. Mr Edgerton will use his Fellowship prize to travel to the United Kingdom and Vanuatu to gain practical experience from international companies using theatre to address social issues. “I’m planning to spend six weeks overseas working with theatre for development companies,” Mr Edgerton said. “In London I’ll be spending time with a company called Cardboard Citizens, who work with homeless people and PAN Intercultural Arts, who deal with refugee programs, the United Nations and Arts Against Violence programs.” Mr Edgerton said his three years experience working as a ‘resident artist in education’ at the Bell Shakespeare theatre company helped prepare him for the Fellowship. “I’ve worked in a range of remote communities, with the homeless and in juvenile justice centres exposing people to theatre,” he said. Another Marrickville Fellowship recipient is Alicia Talbot, who will travel to Italy, Croatia and the UK researching alternative modes of dramaturgical development and performance to enrich theatre making in an Australian context. The 2012 Fellowships this year are valued at more than $2.2 million.

emember the days when you knew your neighbour’s name? Actually met them at the front letterbox for a chat? Of course it was small talk but it was something. In 2012 perhaps life has become too busy or maybe dare I say people are becoming less caring. When I was a kid we knew the family next

door... we were even friends with the people living all the way down the end of the street. I remember my mum offering to collect the neighbours’ mail or bring in their bins when they were away – there was even Neighbourhood Watch. Now that I’m in my early thirties and live in my own place I don’t feel the same sense of community and I think that’s really sad.

We often hear stories of neighbours at war, but wouldn’t life be easier if we not only knew but cared about the people next door? Surely it can’t be that hard or that time consuming to talk to a couple more people every week. I’m not saying everyone has to love thy neighbour but perhaps just once in a while we could ask how they are.

Refreshing approach to park Expressions of interest sought for refreshments bus initiative in Steel Park On the back of success with the Waterplay Park, Marrickville Council's latest initiative for Steel Park will be a refreshments van to strengthen community spirit ... JORDAN COX

F

amilies enjoying an outing to Steel Park and the Waterplay feature in Marrickville South will soon have access to a refreshments bus if Marrickville Council succeeds in its latest efforts to encourage social enterprise. At a meeting on Tuesday, councillors voted to call for expressions of interest from local service providers to locate a small van which could provide refreshments to visitors to the park. With a 24 month trial to commence once expressions of interest are fi nalised in August, Council hopes the van will benefit young people and make an impact on various social justice issues in the community. In particular, it is hoped that a refreshments van run by the local community will target youth unemployment in Marrickville South, which was highlighted as an unemployment hot spot for youths and migrants. Council is hoping a community organisation might be interested in the initiative as the van could address this issue by providing employment and training. “Marrickville Council has a strong philosophy of supporting social enterprise, especially where we can directly aff ect the

lives of local young people. Th is pilot project has been assessed as the model best suited to our local community,” said Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna. “I look forward to seeing this enterprise up and running in the near future, providing not only refreshments for Steel Park users, but also pathways into employment for people

from the local area.” Cr Hanna said Council’s interest in building local social enterprise is part of their commitment to social procurement, a policy adopted in 2011. "The policy ties Council’s spending to better social and local community outcomes,” he said.

Already, the success of the Council’s Waterplay Park has seen a signifi cant rise in the number of people who enjoy the park’s facilities. “One of Council’s key commitments is to a diverse community that is happy, healthy and fair – with a focus on social justice and learning opportunities," he said.

Green thumbs get thumbs up: Council funds garden projects JORDAN COX

M

arrickville Council has announced the recipients of the 2012 Groundwork Sustainability Grants awarded to local projects that encourage environmental sustainability. 16 projects were recognised by Marrickville Council, which has set aside a total of $13,500 for the varying grants. Recipients range from a bird identifi cation project at Tempe and noxious weed removal at Cooks River to the construction of beehives at Marrickville Men’s shed. “The objectives of these grants are to assist our residents in their efforts to take positive action in a changing climate,” said Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna. “Marrickville Council is determined to improve sustainability while maintaining the character of our neighbourhoods. “Our Marrickville citizens are involved and interested in fi nding creative solutions to complex urban sustainability issues.” Community gardens were the big winners with several being awarded the Groundwork Sustainability Grants. Addison Road Community Garden received the largest grant worth $3,103. The grant will assist the upgrade of a gravity-fed water tank, new gazebo and meeting table to rejuvenate the common meeting area where gardening workshops are held. Francis Street Community Garden is the recipient of $2,220 to go towards purchasing garden tools, a tool box, compost tumbler

and to construct new raised garden beds. Francis Street Community Garden is the fi rst community garden to be located on Council land and will provide a haven for many recreational activities including gardening, meeting neighbours and a chance for children to learn in a playful environment. Camdenville Paddock Community Garden run by the Newtown Sustainability Group has received $2,000 for the construction phase of the garden including purchasing the soil for the garden beds. All construction and building labour will be carried out by volunteers. Not all the grant recipients have green thumbs though, some are excellent cooks. Carly Woods, host of the Earth Plate Health Forums and Cooking Workshops has been granted $500 as a contribution towards the health forums and cooking workshops, which are designed to broaden community awareness for health and sustainability related issues. A number of schools have also benefited from the program. Dulwich High school will use the $300 granted to them to assist in an initiative to reach an energy saving target of 10 per cent in the school. The Addison Road Centre will use $600 towards a mural and signage to promote their new community composting site. Cr Hanna said the grant program is one way Council is supporting volunteers and the broader community who are contributing to the environmental restoration and transformation of the local government area.

Police would like to identify a man who committed an indecent act on a public bus

Investigations continue: Man sought over act of indecency

P

olice have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to following an act of indecency on a bus in Petersham earlier this year. About 4.15pm on Tuesday, April 3, a man committed an act of indecency in front of a group of young school girls while on a bus travelling along Parramatta Road, Petersham. The girls ran from the bus and called police. Officers from Leichhardt Local Area Command are investigating the incident and have released CCTV images of a man who police believe can assist with their

investigation. The person shown in the images is described as male, being about 60-years-old, of an average build, with curly dark grey hair. He is shown wearing a blue shirt and bucket hat with the Australian flag on it. Police have released further images believed to be the same man wearing different clothing. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the identity of the man depicted in the CCTV images is asked to contact Leichhardt Police on 9552 8099 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

An underground car park on Marrickville road was vandalised last weekend on July 7 or 8 and personal items were stolen from cars parked in the vicinity. Abreast the issue New mothers avoid the bottle and health risks

T

he joyful bonding of mother and baby, the unmatched health benefits of breast milk, the cost savings – breastfeeding offers it all and more, according to a local health expert. And inner west mums are heeding the message, with the local region having one of the highest breastfeeding rates in the country. August 1 to 7 marks World Breastfeeding Week and RPA Acting Clinical Nurse Consultant for Lactation and Parenting, Carmel

Kelly, said breastfeeding provides babies with the best start in life and is a key contributor to infant health. “Breastfeeding is the biological norm and clearly the most beneficial method for feeding infants, with positive immediate and long term health outcomes for mother and baby,” Ms Kelly said. For babies, breastfeeding reduces the risks of SIDS, asthma, allergies, juvenile diabetes, gastroenteritis and ear infections. Breastfeeding helps mothers

return to their pre-pregnancy weight, reduces risk of cancer of the breast and ovaries and reduces the risk of heart disease. Ms Kelly said RPA and Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) actively encourages breastfeeding among patients and staff . Ms Kelly added that Sydney’s inner west has one of the highest rates of breastfeeding, with 96 per cent of women initiating breastfeeding at RPA Women and Babies Hospital.

Seminar hopes to connect new Sierra Leonean families

A

seminar covering practical parenting advice is being offered to the Sierra Leonean community, a migrant group experiencing a lack of traditional family support networks. Metro Migrant Resource Centre Family Support Worker, Fatmata Bangura, said that while the Positive Parenting Program sponsored by Families NSW, is important for all families, it is doubly important for parents and carers disconnected from a traditional extended family structure. “For example, in the Sierra Leonean community where traditionally family and neighbours all helped to bring up the children, families can fi nd themselves alone and with no one to ask for advice in a big city like Sydney, Ms Bangura said. The seminar will be held at the Marrickville West Public School on July 19 by Ms Bangura with the help of a bilingual community worker, who will interpret for Krio speakers. “We will discuss issues around parenting without a support network and how to use a positive approach to parenting, how to communicate effectively with a child as well as issues of disciplining and behavioural problems, among many others, she said. Anyone interested in attending the seminar should book by calling Metro MRC on 9559 1883 or Hawanatu on 0431 109 176 or email fatmata. bangura@metromrc.org.au before July 17. The seminar will be held from 9.30am to midday with free child minding provided. Marrickville West Public School is located near Dulwich Hill train station.

rayndler MP, Anthony Albanese, has labelled the State Government's decision to increase public housing rent from March 2013 greedy, grubby and wrong. NSW Minister for Family and Community services, Pru Goward, recently announced that social housing rents will increase from March next year to cover the impacts of the carbon tax. “Th is is a cruel and cynical cash grab from a typical Liberal Premier who cares more about his own hip pocket than looking out for local pensioners,” said Mr Albanese. “The Gillard Government is delivering a boost for pensioners to help them make ends meet, but Barry O’Farrell just wants take a slice of it for himself.” According to Mr Albanese, pensioners have received a recent lump sum payment of $250 for singles and $380 for couples. Another permanent increase will be delivered next year with pensioners set to receive $338, all as compensation for the carbon tax. Barry O'Farrell has defended increases to social housing rents

Government has failed to provide the States and Territories with an adequate analysis of the price gap and that these measures must be taken to accommodate for cost increases in the state budget. “Industry commentators forecast

increases to property costs of up to 1.7 per cent. Th is increase would cost social housing in NSW $50 million over four years... Our social housing system is already struggling with the 16 year legacy of state Labor governments,” he said.

WEEKLY WINE by David Ellis

Full flavoured wines for winter

W

ith sales of Merlot booming across Australia – its now our thirdmost popular red after Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon – there’s certainly no lack of choice on bottle shop shelves. And one label that’s doing particularly well, not only here but in countries as far flung as Japan, Norway, Vietnam, Canada, Finland and Hong Kong, is Weemala from Mudgee in NSW, whose Merlot is always full-flavoured while retaining a nice varietal softness. Their just-released 2010 is one to keep an eye on as it's even richer and fuller than the 2009, a wine that’s already done exceptionally well on the show circuit. Maker Peter Logan sums-up the 2010 as having: “a deep, dark side to its character while still being soft and comforting”. Nice dark chocolate, blackberry and blueberry flavours are to the fore and it's one that’s not dominated by oak. It also somewhat over-delivers at $18 and makes for a delightful winter-time companion with beef stews or oven-baked lamb chops and roast vegetables. ONE FOR LUNCH: PINOT GRIS is Italy’s most-popular white wine being sold there as Pinot Grigio, and here local versions are enjoying an amazingly fast-growing army of Aussie fans. Banjo’s Run in NSW’s Southern Highlands has a 2011 Pinot Gris from its cool-climate

vineyard at Exeter, this one having rich pear and tropical fruit flavours and a slight citrus zest. aving entered the baking industry in Cyprus at the age of 12 and gaining every bit of knowledge he could muster from the masters of European baking, Sergio Christou’s family cake shop enterprise, Sergio’s Cake Shop in Chullora and Blacktown, now has franchise plans for the length and breadth of Sydney. When Sergio migrated to Australia in the early 1980’s, he quickly realised the need to secure his and his family’s future. So with his knowledge of baking, Sergio set about making traditional, delicious, flavoursome cakes and pastries for his friends and

neighbours from his Sydney home using only quality ingredients. In 2003, he embarked on his own personalised cake brand, Sergio’s Cake Shop in Chullora. Sergio’s sons Peter and Gary then decided to follow in their father’s footsteps but have now taken the brand to another level via franchising, fi rst in Blacktown and the soonto-be opened Marrickville shop. With further franchising plans for the eastern suburbs and northern beaches areas, Sergio’s Cake Shop is currently seeking interested franchisees for the latter areas. According to Peter Christou: “The Sergio’s

Cake Shop brand wants to be recognised as the top quality provider of cakes and pastries – both European style and Australian. My father spent a lifetime perfecting the art of creating sensuous, flavoursome experiences when it came to customer tastes. “The feedback he received from his customers was that he was offering a unique experience and that is something we want to continue with today. A commitment of excellence to create the perfect cakes and pastries is what Sergio’s does best and we believe Sydneysiders will come to recognise that fact more and more.”

Sergio’s produce is all handmade daily and they have the widest range of products of any cake store in Sydney from extravagant wedding cakes, unique novelty creations, birthday cakes, tortes, gateaux, individual cakes and slices, tarts, profiteroles, shortbread and vienesse biscuits, baklava and other European sweets. Sergio’s also offers homemade pies, sausage rolls, spinach and cheese pastries plus their own unique freshly roasted coffee. “We are passionate about all aspects of our business and are as fussy about our freshly roasted coffee as we are with our huge range of beautiful cake products,” said Peter. “Our blend is sourced form regions around the world to develop a specifi c flavour and aroma like no other and roasted fresh in-house here in Australia. It’s the freshest coffee you will ever taste and so diff erent from the many generic brands out there in the marketplace today. Overall, we think we have the complete package.”

Mercury In Retrograde in Leo July 16th to August 9th.

Graffiti Proofing Your Property Workshop Saturday 21 July 2012 10.30am – 12.30pm

ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

As Mercury is retrograde misunderstandings are likely and you’ll waste no time in telling someone if they have offended you in any way, and you won’t mince words either. If you need to get something off your chest, make sure that you don’t secretly look for an excuse to have a row. Some advice that you are sure to need in the coming week: be mindful of being assertive not provocative.

TAURUS

Council’s Works Depot 15 -17 Unwins Bridge Road St Peters The workshop will discuss – • Rights of property owners, crime prevention and reporting • Rapid removal of graffiti, Hot Spot locations • Demonstrations on how to remove graffiti from various surfaces • Green Screening your property • Commissioning an artist to paint a mural All workshop participants will receive a free Graffiti Proofing Kit. This workshop is only available to Marrickville LGA residents and business owners. Book online at Council’s website at www.marrickville.nsw.gov.au 096ICD1901

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Something from the past is being stirred up which is making you feel vaguely uneasy. Instead of sweeping these feelings back under the carpet, do your best to bring them to the surface and then resolve them once and for all. If you feel that you need help you could always talk to someone who inspires total trust and confidence as they may have a fresh perspective on those buried feelings and help you to overcome the problem.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Difficult issues with friendships and co-workers are likely and others may accuse you of having a failed sense of humour but the truth is you are simply taking something very seriously. Finding a balance between your thoughts and emotions will prove challenging and you could swing from either end of the emotional/rational spectrum. Remain aware of this when others are demanding.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

You need to be careful of how you deal with certain colleagues or clients. You need to focus on honesty and clarity in your communication with others. You’re ready to speak your mind, but remember that truth without compassion can come across as wounding and judgemental. Although certain people may not appear sensitive, you know that this can often be a protection against being hurt!

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

096ICD1822

If you have travel plans during the next few weeks be certain to double check all arrangements as delays are of all types are likely. If you have a long car journey to take be certain to check the petrol gauge before you set out, as you are likely to run out of fuel in the most inconvenient of places. Also self doubts are going to plague you and won't be easily shaken off.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Money is likely to be a concern and this is not an ideal time to apply for a loan as there is a good chance of refusal. Be certain not to break any laws as you are bound to get caught! If you are dealing with anything of a legal nature than brick walls are likely to appear where you thought you had a clear run. If you need to sign any official papers be certain to read them twice before signing as mistakes are likely.

www.francisbevan.com

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Misunderstandings are likely either at home or at work as you are feeling very single minded. Heaven help anyone who crosses your path as they will get more than they bargained for. The best cure is prevention, so next time you feel yourself getting wound up, find some physical outlet to help diffuse the stress. It’s also helpful to recognise the triggers that set you off so you learn to not react to them.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Whenever Mercury turns retrograde you never know whether you are coming or going. Problems are likely at work, projects will be delayed, making it difficult for you to progress at your normal high speed. You will feel temporarily deprived of some of your enthusiasm and energy, so this is a time when you should ideally pace yourself. Focus on what is most important and leave everything else on the backburner until after August 9.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Hold tight if you’re about to make some travel plans as this isn’t the right time for them as any arrangements you make shall come unravelled or come to nothing. If you have no choice and still have to take off into the wide blue yonder than prepare yourself for delays and hold-ups. Also tolerance is going to be called for when dealing with certain people, as your patience is likely to be tested.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Your energy levels aren’t very high and you need to look after your health and pace yourself, as almost everything will feel like too much effort. You’re also very sensitive at the moment and could easily feel other people are either looking down their noses at you or giving you the cold shoulder. Try not to let your sensitivities rule, instead put that wonderful witty sense of humour that you are famous for to work.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Mercury retrograde is having a negative effect on your relationships during the next several weeks. This is your cue to take action over any business or personal partnerships that you aren’t happy about. This means you will have to face certain realities in your connection with others and meet problems head on. It may also indicate that certain people no longer belong in your life.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Problems are likely on the working front in the next two weeks and unless you enjoy having to start all over again it would be wise to avoid starting any new projects. They won’t get very far and they might even end up causing more trouble than they are worth. Try not to over do things and remember to take breaks when necessary as it is important that you look after your health and well being.

STAYING HEALTHY

by Susan Garrad

KEEPING FIT by David Stein

What is food? Simple question, tough answer

Worried about my daughter’s health Q: I’m really worried about my teenage daughter’s health – she eats a lot of junk food and seems to catch every cold or flu that’s around. She also has really bad acne. Is there anything I can do to improve her diet? A: You have good reason to be concerned as adolescents actually have a greater need for good nutritious food than at any other time of their lives. Not eating well can have a big effect on young people’s wellbeing, energy and health. Evidence suggests most adolescents have low intakes of several vitamins and minerals, including folate, zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron. Some tips to get your teen eating well: • Schedule family mealtimes as often as possible • Serve high quality protein (beef, lamb, chicken, fish) with lots of fresh vegetables at sit down meals • Keep the pantry and fridge stocked with healthy, low preparation snacks – fruits, nut bars, protein shakes, low fat yogurts, hummus dip • Promote high water intake – a healthy replacement for soft drinks is four parts sparkling mineral water with one part fresh fruit juice • Encourage healthier takeaway choices – Thai, Japanese, falafel kebabs, vegetarian pizza

was at the Opera House on Tuesday to see a talk by Michael Pollen, who has written some books on topics like the omnivores dilemma, on the importance of eating healthy, real food and some of the ways we can make better choices. As I looked around at the couple of thousand other people there I noticed they all seemed stereotypically healthy and fit looking. I didn’t see one obese person there. Of course, you’re thinking who else would go to a diet book talk? The thing is, Pollen never mentions fat loss, diet or anything similar in any of his books. There’s no low fat recipes or silly tips on cutting calories. He talks about eating healthy, nonprocessed food, or growing some food yourself but he never makes an issue of what weight anyone is at. It has nothing to do with counting calories and going without treats or losing fat. It seems all these people were just ‘victims’ of a side effect of eating like this. Afterwards I was at a table with nearly 10 other dieticians or like-minded people and we certainly weren’t counting calories before ordering our dinner. And no one felt the need to look for ‘extra iron’ or ‘low cholesterol’.

Naturopath Susan Garrad from Women’s Health Naturally, Summer Hill can be contacted on 9798 9322 or visit www.womenshealthnaturally.com.au

Pollen sums it up on one of his book covers with: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants”. Sounds pretty common sense. But what exactly is food? Glow in the dark sports drinks or packets of an edible substance that have a shelf life of two years don’t fall into this category. In fact walk into a supermarket and 90 per cent of what you will fi nd wouldn’t be in the food category. Lots of them taste nice and are very convenient but if that’s what you regularly eat, your body won’t exactly be a beacon of health and vitality. Th row some physical training in and you will quickly run your body down to a sick level. Learn what real food is, then eat it! Read books and talk to professionals. There’s an online conference on this week at the website: realfoodsummit.com. It has great free seminars and information. If you have even a square metre in the yard grow a couple of lettuce or something. Get a chook out the back if you can. Go to farmers markets and try fresh produce straight from the garden. At the end of the day your food choices will come back to one of two questions: you asking yourself “what will make me feel great?”, or a company asking itself “what can we make the most profit off ?” David Stein, Owner & Manager of Fitec, Penrith www.fitec.com.au e:david@fitec.com.au

t’s been a massive week of television news – here’s what went down…

Look out Australia, another cooking show is on its way! Channel Nine is currently on the hunt for contestants for a new prime-time series called ‘The Great Australian Bake Off’. Based on ‘The Great British Bake Off’, the show sees amateur bakers complete in a series of tasks to find Australia’s best amateur baker. Enough with the cooking shows! Good news for ‘Seinfeld’ fans because Jerry Seinfeld is back with a brand new web-series called ‘Comedians in Cars getting Coffee’. The series sees Seinfeld hanging out in his car with a host of fellow comedians chatting about random things. Stars set to feature in the series include Larry David, Michael Richards, Ricky Gervais and Alec Baldwin. Channel 10’s ‘Breakfast’ show is in serious

Sad news over the past few weeks with two US acting legends passing away. Long-time TV star Andy Griffith, best known for ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and ‘Matlock’, died at the age of 86 and Ernest Borgnine, famous for his title role in ‘McHale’s Navy’, also died aged 95. RIP. An interesting documentary hitting the ABC in the run up to the London Olympics will be centred on one of Australia’s greatest athletes, Ian Thorpe. The documentary is set to focus on his sporting career, his failed swimming comeback, as well a ‘slight’ insight into his personal life. ‘Ian Thorpe: The Swimmer’ airs this Sunday, July 15 at 7.30pm. Channel Nine just can’t get enough of ‘The Voice’ and are milking it as hard as they can. Season two of the US version started on screens this week in a bid to lift early evening ratings for the network. Nine just aired the ‘Blind Auditions’ phase of the competition and will continue to screen the show until it switches to GO! as soon as the Olympics saturate our TV sets. Hot tip for fans of the show, the series wrapped up in the US in May, so there are plenty of spoilers about. Popular US drama and recent Foxtel hit ‘Smash’ is headed to free-to-air television over the coming weeks. ‘Smash’ is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theatre as it follows a cross section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire – to be a ‘Smash’. Channel Seven have the rights to this Steven Spielbergproduced series, which will hit our screens around Olympics time.

Bad news for ‘Dexter’ fans with the announcement that next year’s season will be the show’s last. After eight seasons producers have decided to call it quits but I’m hearing there could be a movie on the cards! 'Melrose Place' is about to hit our screens once again. Now before you get all sentimental and excited, ELEVEN will be airing the 2009 remake of the hit 90’s US series. The promo reads: “We're heading back to 4616 Melrose where a whole bunch of new pretty people live beside a pool and sleep with each other. The times have changed, the drama hasn't. Kicking

off with a few familiar faces and an unexplained death, Melrose Place is again one of the hottest address on TV”. It all begins Sunday, July 29 at 10.30pm. Lastly one for ‘American Idol’ fans, former contestant and 2009 runner-up, Adam Lambert, is said to be in talks with producers to become a judge on the next season of the hit show. “They have been talking about Adam for over a month,” a source told E News. “He personifies the show, and will be a popular choice right from the start.” Other contenders to join the new line-up of judges include Charlie Sheen and Jerry Lewis.

ne of the more surprisingly successful comedies of the year, ‘Ted’, is doing wonders at the box office and is a must see for anyone that had a cute and cuddly Teddy bear as a child. Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane, brings his boundary-pushing brand of humour to the big screen for the first time as writer, director and voice star of ‘Ted’. In the live action and CG-animated comedy, he tells the story of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a grown man who must deal with the cherished teddy bear who came to life as the result of a childhood wish... and has refused to leave his side ever since. However there are some hiccups along the way with John's long-term girlfriend, Lori (Mila Kunis), not sold on the idea of a grown man still ‘playing’ with his Teddy bear. And unless John can cut the contact with Ted, she’s out! Fans haven’t stopped raving and laughing at this movie since it was released last week and it has already made an impressive US$135 million at the international box office. However, critics haven’t been so kind towards Seth MacFarlane’s latest offering with very few giving it the thumbs up. One top critic said: “Rude as hell, funny as hell... While merrily delivering all the coarse anti-PC humour the ‘Family Guy’ fanbase have a right to expect, the best thing about ‘Ted’ is also its biggest surprise – it has real heart”.

O

Another critic said: “It's not quite as funny as I hoped, but if you're ready to leave commonsense at the door and enjoy some good-hearted nonsense, there's fun to be had with Ted”. While one reviewer had a go at creator MacFarlane: “The irony is that, at least for the time being, if you want to see Seth MacFarlane at the top of his game, you'll have to turn on a TV!”

Movie: Ted (Rated MA) Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane and Mila Kunis

ne for the guys this week with action drama ‘The Philly Kid’ landing on DVD and Blu-Ray shelves. On the same night that he was crowned an NCAA wrestling champion, Dillon McCabe (Wes Chatham) was involved in the killing of a cop and then sentenced to 15 years of prison. 10 years later, Dillon is paroled back onto the streets of his rundown Baton Rouge neighbourhood. But before he can pick up the pieces of his life, his best friend gets in trouble with a vicious loan shark. To get the money to free him, Dillon must return to fighting – this time, mixed martial arts. But his quick, brutal success gets him into more trouble than ever. And after three vicious triumphs, he discovers that his real opponent is a corrupt system that requires him to do the impossible – lose. The straight-to-DVD film has already found itself a few fans, with one saying: “‘The Philly Kid’ shows that you don’t need an ‘A list’ cast to make a great movie. This is a true gem to rent and a must see for action movie fans. It’s the 2012 version of ‘Blood Sport’ or ‘Kick Boxer’”. ‘The Philly Kid’ is just another title in the huge wave of martial arts movies hitting the big and small screen of late. While there have been many fighting films in the past that have been super successful, there has also been many that

should have probably never been made. he first ever title which provides sportsmen and women with an authentic and authorised technical sports-training program, ‘miCoach’ brings a whole new level of interactivity to your training regime. It’s your exercise world, perfectly synced from your console, via the web or via your smartphone. So you may as well give up your expensive gym membership and pick up this rather affordable game! Gaming expert, Leo Anderson, said the

new Adidas ‘miCoach’ is the perfect game to test your skills amongst the world’s best. “The game is more instense compared to similar titles like the Zumba games,” Leo said. “The training is more tailored towards the various sports of the superstar athletes featured.” Leo added that rather than going to a gym and paying excessive gym fees, ‘miCoach’ is much more practical. “Sometimes people just want to stay at home instead of making the effort of going to a gym. That’s why this game makes life a whole lot easier and you will get similar results,” he said.

he likeable and smooth Darren Percival from Australia’s biggest show, ‘The Voice’, releases his debut album this week titled ‘Happy Home’. The album features 10 tracks – eight cover songs that he performed previously on ‘The Voice’ and two unheard originals. Darren has always been musical. When his family relocated to Mexico for a number of years Darren spent his time jamming with his brother on home-made instruments. Moving back to Australia when he was 12, Darren found refuge singing and playing the piano. Performing Arts school soon followed, after which Darren began working professionally. In the past 22 years Darren made a living performing and doing back-up vocals. He’s never had a day job. Though successful, Darren has always been over looked by industry executives because he doesn’t have the right look or meet the commercial music criteria. Darren’s journey on ‘The Voice’ was unlike anyone had expected. His coach on the series, Keith Urban, knew the right path for Darren to take musically and that valuable knowledge propelled him all the way to the final two, only going down to eventual winner Karise Eden by the skin of his teeth. During the show Darren enjoyed huge success on the local iTunes charts, scoring top 10 hits left, right and centre, making him an instant star.

If you loved Darren’s music on ‘The Voice’, you’re going to love this new album! Also available this week are the debut albums from fellow ‘The Voice’ runner-ups, Rachael Leahcar and Sarah De Bono. Inspirational singer Racheal Leahcar, member of Team Delta Goodrem, releases her first album titled ‘Shooting Star’. Rachael’s album features 10 tracks – seven covers which she performed previously on TV show and three additional tracks she recorded after the show with one titled ‘Coming Home Again’. Popular bombshell Sarah De Bono also drops her debut titled ‘No Shame’. Sarah, who was part of Team Joel Madden, took the country by storm with her booming vocals and eye-catching good looks.

Jets come close but no cigar A nail biting finish sees the Jets fall one try short of a win against the Vulcans

T

he Newtown Jets crossed the ditch to Mount Smart last weekend to battle the Auckland Vulcans in a match full of determination. The Vulcans secured a 22-18 win but not without a fight from the Jets who were determined to win. In the opening sets neither side looked to have any signifi cant advantage, but after five minutes the Vulcans launched their fi rst attacking raid from 20 metres out. Following a steady build-up, Aaron Nootai took a swift pass from Jordan meads, grounding the ball for the opening try. Collier missed the conversion leaving the score at 4-0. The score became even when Jets, Adam Henry secured Newtown’s fi rst try and Mark Kheirallah missed the conversion. A Newtown error then gave the Vulcans a chance to retaliate almost immediately with Meads and Collier scoring to take the lead to 10-4. Failed discipline from the Jets then gave the home side a handy field position and a perfect opportunity to build on their lead with Collier scoring from the boot, taking the score to 164. In a last minute pass Ivan Penehe took the Vulcans’ fourth try of the day. Up 22-4 by half time, the Vulcans had launched a signifi cant attack, but a hat-trick of tries by Newtown winger Daniel Tupoa saw the lead cut to just a four point advantage as the fi nal siren sounded. A nail biting fi nish, it wasn’t mean to be as the Jets ran an illegal obstruction in the last minutes, realising defeat to the valiant Vulcans.

TIGER RUMBLINGS Troy Dodds

W

ith three losses in a row behind them, the Tigers have a real opportunity to get things back on track against an in-crisis Penrith at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night. The Panthers are in all sorts, but it should be remembered that the boys from the foot of the Mountains have performed well following major incidents this season. They won the game after Michael Jennings was dropped and backed up to win when Luke Lewis was stripped of the captaincy. It’s a danger game but one that the Tigers deserve to win. Wests Tigers forward Adam Blair was this week found guilty of a Grade 1 Dangerous Contact (Unnecessary leg pressure) charge at the NRL Judiciary. Robbie Farah returns to the Tigers outfi t this week and he’ll be looking to move forward after grieving the loss of his mum. He did an emotional interview with Channel Nine on Tuesday night and is scheduled to front a media conference at Campbelltown today. With those commitments done, it can now all be about footy for our Robbie. The Tigers always play better when he’s there and have been looking forward to his return.

We play better with Farah The Tigers have been involved in some golden point heartbreakers over the years. The talk this week has been about the golden point and whether it should stay or go. The bottom line is this: * You can’t make it golden try. If you can kick a field goal in the 79th minute, you should be able to kick one in the 81st. * You can’t make it one point each and then play for a third point. Every NRL game has to be worth two points no matter what, you can’t have games being worth three points when others aren’t. Hence, the only solution is of course the current scenario. So many people say it’s not exciting, but golden point to me has always added excitement, even when it is a field goal shootout. If your club is involved, there’s nothing more spectacular than taking home a golden point victory. Wests Tigers representatives were out in full force last Friday night at Allianz Stadium and were on the hunt for fans who aren’t currently Wests Tigers members by “Blowing the Whistle” on them. They had a fantastic turn out of Members and fans that were all willing to “dob” in a friend, family member or better still were willing to dob themselves in and show their commitment to the Club!

Lewis a Tiger? Panthers star could be headed our way

T

he Wests Tigers have emerged as a possible home for Penrith’s Luke Lewis from next season. Gould sensationally agreed to release 28-year-old Lewis from the final two years of his Panthers contract on Monday. It came after the State of Origin star forward made the Panthers aware he was unhappy – he wanted a new challenge and he wanted out of the re-building franchise. Lewis admitted it was during the Origin period that he realised he needed a change in his life and a fresh start away from Penrith.

“I had a long think about things and it probably hit me during Origin II and all I wanted to focus on was my football and trying to enjoy it,” he said. “The plan was when I got out of Origin camp that I’d have a talk to my manager and the Penrith club. I wanted to make sure there was no hard feelings between the club and I and that hopefully we can just part ways and still be on good terms.” The Tigers are searching for a replacement for Gareth Ellis next season and Lewis would be the ideal candidate. Cronulla and Parramatta are also after him.
