Frustrated by Foot, Ankle or Heel pain? Does your child have growing pains or postural problems? Frustrated at not finding the answers you need? NOT all Podiatrists are the same. While many people in Penrith have NOT heard about us, we are one of Sydney’s busiest foot + ankle clinics with patients travelling from all over Sydney to see our expert team. You may have heard about other local clinics that are BULK BILLED general podiatry centres. While other local clinics are VERY good at cutting your Grandma’s toe nails we sadly are NOT. Our focus is around solving more difficult problems often other teams don’t have the time to focus on! Our clinic is based around seeing: • Complex walk/run and muscular problems • Heel Pain • And KIDS loads of KIDS!!!! We LOVE doing this work and proudly we have become very good at it! We have been recognised around the country for it. Featuring on and in Channel 7, 9 and 10, Men’s Health, Women’s Health and on radio stations 2UE & 2GB and health experts on the ABC. Business
Cranebrook’s last man standing As shops closed around him one by one, Sen Khun decided to stay until the bitter end DALE DRINKWATER
alk about taking a stand. Cranebrook-based business Chivers Cakes has refused to be beaten down by big development. Despite the Cranebrook Shopping Village becoming a virtual ghost down ahead of a major redevelopment, Chivers Cakes owner Sen Khun keeps turning up to work each day in an attempt to keep his business alive and make ends meet at home. “It’s really, really hard at the moment,” he said. “Now there’s not even 20 per cent of our normal business, and because of the fencing that’s around a lot of the locals don’t realise we are still open.” In May last year, shop owners at Cranebrook Shopping Village received notification to vacate the premises by November to make way for construction of a Woolworths and Aldi. The small shopping centre has been host to many small businesses for over 30 years and, after most closed down, just the post office, the chemist and Chivers Cakes were left. “The business has been supporting my family for over 20 years. It used to be
T
owned by two generations of my cousins, then was passed to my sister and then passed to me,” Mr Khun said. “We’ve had to make a lot of cuts to the business. Normally I have an assistant for the baker, but now it’s just the three of us including my wife.” The hard working small business is the only bakery left to support the local community, but is losing customers to the closest shopping centre. “The elderly locals keep coming in, but people that have a car can go to the next suburb and go to Jordan Springs Shopping Centre,” he said. Currently providing daily bread, bread rolls, cakes and sausage rolls to the local community, Mr Khun hopes to expand his offering to those who do come in. “From next week I will try to offer some basic groceries, we are not sure yet but we will have to discuss with the supplier,” he said. The local bakery has decided to stick it out and stay open until March, before being moved to a temporary shop outside the centre. “Then hopefully we will go back inside the centre, but at the moment we don’t have any contract or promise that we will get back in,” he said.

hree Aussie guys – Shane, Barry and Jeff – were working on a high-rise building project. Unfortunately, Shane falls off the scaffolding and is killed instantly. As the ambulance takes the body away, Barry says, “Someone should go and tell his wife”. Jeff says, “OK, I’m pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I’ll do it”. Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Fosters. “Where did you get that, Jeff?” Barry asks. “Shane’s wife gave it to me,” Jeff replies. Barry continues, “That’s unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you a case of beer?” “Well not exactly,” Jeff said. “When she answered the door, I said to her, ‘You must be Shane’s widow’. She said, ‘No, I’m not a widow’. And I said, ‘I’ll bet you a case of Fosters you are’.” When that joke landed in my inbox on Monday, I got a good little chuckle over it. I also got a good laugh out of ‘that’ Australia Day advertisement for lamb that sparked more than 300 complaints to the Advertising Standards Bureau. That, by the way, sniffs of a targeted campaign as 300 is an incredibly high number of complaints based on what the Bureau usually deals with. Leading the charge, we’re told, are vegans who are offended by a very funny part of the ad where a bearded man living in Brooklyn, New York is ‘rescued’ as part of ‘Operation Boomerang’, which aims to bring ex-pats back to Australia to enjoy lamb on the BBQ on Australia Day. The ad is bloody funny, but of course the fake outrage brigade is out to ensure
T
“What I really care about is that we can sit down and share a laugh together”
that we now live in a politically correct planet where everything must be done to some mythical standard of ethics and morals set by a finger-waving minority. As we prepare to celebrate Australia Day on Tuesday, you have to wonder, have we lost the ability to laugh? And who is to blame? Is it the finger-waving minority I mentioned before, who are determined to be outraged about anything and everything? Is it the wider mainstream media who in their obsession for content make minor complaints into major stories that simply make everyone angry? Or is it the big companies who are too quick to apologise or take action when in reality the majority of their customers disagree with that response? A little over a year ago, Woolworths ridiculously pulled t-shirts from their shelves that carried the Australian flag
with the tag line, “If you don’t love it, leave”. There was nothing wrong with the message but of course, the fake outrage brigade ensured it was removed. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some things that happen in this country of ours that deserve attention and focus. There is indeed a racist element in Australia that needs to be stamped out, and of course there’s inequalities that need to be addressed. There are companies, individuals, advertisements and campaigns that will, at times, step across the line. But when we become outraged at every little thing, often just for the sake of being angry at something, then the real issues often don’t get the attention they deserve. When we make a national story out of an ad for lamb that quite clearly was a funny take on Australia Day, we line ourselves up to water down the outrage on the things that really do matter. The Australia I grew up in was quite happy to have a laugh at itself. The Australia I grew up in would have given that lamb ad an award, not complained about it. Why have we stopped laughing? I don’t care if you’re vegan, vegetarian, gay, straight, bi-sexual, tall, short, fat, thin, black, white, a beer drinker, a wine drinker, a non-drinker... the list goes on. I do care if you’re an Eels fan but that’s a story for another day. What I really care about is that we can sit down and share a laugh together. Dump the fake outrage, be angry about the things that really matter and be prepared to laugh. Go on, you can do it. Happy Australia Day.

There will be a strong police presence on local roads leading into Australia Day around the local area on Australia Day.” Double demerit points for speeding, mobile phone, seat belt and motorcycle helmet offences will be back in force from January 22 to 26. The warnings about drink-driving in the holiday period haven’t reached some locals in the area with drivers booked for drink-driving offences in the past few weeks. At about 10.55pm on Friday, January 15, police stopped a car on Garswood Road in
Glenmore Park and subjected the driver to a Random Breath Test (RBT). The 46-year-old, from Glenmore Park, blew a reading of .072 and was charged for a low range PCA. At about 11pm on Thursday, January 7, a driver was stopped at an RBT site on the Great Western Highway in Kingswood. The 30-year-old, from Jordan Springs, was subjected to a breath test and returned a positive result with a mid range PCA. His license was suspended.

More than 1,450 people have been taken off the roads as part of Operation Arrive Alive, which has seen more than 800,000 breath tests conducted in the last month. Traffic and Highway Patrol Command’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, Stuart Smith said police remain focused on Operation Arrive Alive. “We are approaching the anniversary of the most tragic week on NSW roads in recent times,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said. “In the seven days from January 17 to 23 last year, 18 people died on NSW roads in 16 fatal crashes.” Acting Crime Manager at Penrith Police Station, Detective Senior Sergeant John McGee, said Penrith locals need to be responsible on the roads as the end of the holiday period nears. “It’s effectively the last day of the holidays as children will head back to school soon,” he said. “There will be extra police presence

Hammer falls on troubled Masters Grand opening one day, uncertainty the next: New Penrith store could be gone within months DALE DRINKWATER
t’s official – Masters has lost the home improvement war. Woolworths Limited announced this week it will either sell or close Masters stores across the country, including local operations in Penrith and St Marys. The Penrith store only opened its doors in mid-December and celebrated its Grand Opening just last weekend – hours before Woolworths pulled the plug on the expensive venture. The new store took a year to build and saw major changes to Mulgoa Road, including the construction of a new set of traffic lights. Woolworths Chairman, Gordon Cairns, said reviews of operating performance indicated Masters would take too many years to become profitable. “We have determined we cannot continue to sustain ongoing losses from this business,” he said. Bunnings has now all but won the home improvement war. However, Wesfarmers CEO Richard Goyder was treading very lightly this week upon hearing the news. “It’s clearly very sad news for their team.
I
The new Masters complex in Penrith, which includes Freedom Furniture and Guzman Y Gomez. Photo: Megan Dunn We don’t think it’s appropriate to make any further comment at this time,” he said. Darren Stanford, who can see the Masters building from his Panthers Timber and Hardware store in Abel Street, Jamisontown, sees the opportunity for small businesses like his.
“All multinational companies have an impact on small business, so it can only be a bonus for any small business in the home improvement industry,” he said. Woolworths is in a joint venture with American-based Lowe’s, for both Masters and Home Timber and Hardware stores across Australia, called Hydrox Holdings.
PENRITH CITY TYRES
Under the joint venture agreement, Woolworths is allowed to exercise its ‘call option’ (to buy) after its partner, Lowe’s, elected to exercise its ‘put option’ (to sell). Woolworths, which holds 66.7 per cent of Hydrox Holdings, has decided to buy out the remaining third that is held by a subsidiary of Lowe’s, WDR Delaware Corporation. “This enables full ownership of the business by Woolworths in a shorter timeframe and gives us access to the widest range of exit options,” Mr Cairns said. Mr Cairns said the ‘put and call option’ will take at least two months to complete, and Masters will continue trading during this time. “Our top priority is to do the right thing by shareholders, staff, suppliers and customers and we will act quickly and openly to minimise the impact of this decision,” he said. Woolworths vowed to find work across the Woolworths Group for current Home Improvement staff if they are unable to sell the business. For current customers, all gift certificates, product warranties, returns, and lay-bys will be honoured and already contracted home improvement projects will be completed.

Man dies during shocking storms
Fallen trees caused extensive damage across the local region last Thursday
JADE ALIPRANDI
man has tragically died and a woman was seriously injured after a freak car accident during a storm that lashed Penrith last week. After temperatures had hit above 40 degrees in the area, a storm ripped through Penrith just after 2pm last Thursday, January 14, causing major damage. In the most serious incident, emergency services, including the CareFlight helicopter, were called to the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains, near Emerald Street, after reports there were two people trapped in a car after a tree had fallen on it. “On arrival officers from Penrith Local Area Command found the passenger of the car, a man, had been hit by the tree and died at the location,” a police spokesperson said. The man was 62-years-old and resided in Kurrajong Hills. Police officers were told that the car was driving easterly on Nepean Street, when the tree fell and hit it. Motorists were advised to avoid the area or delay travel where possible and take care as the storm passed over. A 60-year-old woman, who was driving at the time, was airlifted to Westmead Hospital with a fractured shoulder blade and a number of fractured ribs. By Tuesday, she had been discharged. The pair shared the same last name but it’s unknown whether they were married. The NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW and the State Emergency Service, continued to manage the storm situation into the night with thousands without power and fallen trees blocking roadways around the region.

New laws for pawnbrokers Victims of crime whose wifi-enabled smart phone, tablet or notebook computer is stolen will soon have a better chance of getting it back, thanks to changes to the Pawnbrokers and Second-hand Dealers Regulation. Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said the changes will include forcing pawn shop staff to record media access control (MAC) addresses for mobile phones, tablets and notebook computers – the three most commonly stolen electronic devices. “We are living in the digital age and consumers are purchasing a range of valuable wifi devices,” he said. “From June 1 this year, a licence condition for pawnbrokers accepting certain electronic goods will be to capture the MAC address and provide it to NSW Police.”

Scott slams Badgerys Creek critics
Changed traffic arrangements on Gipps Street and Kent Road, Claremont Meadows
Lindsay MP disappointed in claims that new airport will be “second class” DALE DRINKWATER
Roads and Maritime Services will be switching traffic onto a new section of Gipps Street and Kent Road, Claremont Meadows, part of the $70 million upgrade of Werrington Arterial Road.
M
The traffic switch and preparation work will be carried out from Friday 22 January 2016 until Monday 25 January 2016, weather permitting. Work will be carried out during standard construction hours (7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays). After the switch, all Gipps Street and Kent Road traffic will travel on the new lanes. Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.
Thank you for your patience during this important work.
Z08389
Access to all properties will be maintained throughout the work. There may be some short delays to traffic as traffic controllers help trucks to safely enter and exit our construction sites. This work is required to allow for the upgrade of the existing road and construction of the new intersections.
ember for Lindsay, Fiona Scott has hit back at claims the Government has not done enough to ensure the western Sydney airport will operate independently of Kingsford Smith Airport (KSA). South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon said he fears the Sydney Airport Corporation, a private company who owns KSA, will also own the western Sydney airport under the Right of First Refusal. “If you want this to thrive as a real hub and alternative airport, you can’t do it if you’ve got the same owner,” he said. When the Government sold KSA in 2002, the sale agreement included the Right of First Refusal, where the purchaser was given the first opportunity to develop and operate a second major airport within 100 kilometres of the Sydney general post office. Just 56 kilometres from the Sydney general post office, Mr Xenophon fears the monopoly that could follow if the Sydney Airport Group are to also control the western Sydney airport. “It seems that the planes that KSA rejects will end up at Badgerys Creek,” he said.

for over a decade, you can’t just go and revoke legislation like that, the Government could be sued over it,” she said. Ms Scott said the candidates that will be running against the airport are just fear mongering. “It’s just a scare campaign and it’s completely wrong,” she said. They’ll call Australia home for good From India to St Marys: One family’s journey will be complete when they become citizens on Tuesday DALE DRINKWATER
ustralia Day means a great deal to many Australians, but this year, it’s going to mean something extra special to one St Marys family. Like many families across Australia on Tuesday, Harpeet Kaur, her partner Harinder Singh and their four-year-old daughter Aafreen are going to become Australian citizens. For Ms Kaur, this momentous ceremony is going to bring she and her family closer to the country that they fell in love with since moving from Punjab, India, seven years ago. “We love it here,” she said. “When we came here we saw many other things that made us want to stay here, from the personal to the home, that if we do very hard work we can get it.” Ms Kaur came to Australia on a student visa while she was studying, and graduated with a Masters of Information Technology. “There is better education here than in India. The main reason we want to stay is for our daughter, so she can further her studies in the future,” she said. After completing their citizenship

exams, the ceremony is the last piece of the puzzle for the family to finally feel at home in Australia. “It’s so exciting, but we feel we are just living around here like everyone else,” she said. “We don’t feel like we are Indian because we are just used to the culture here, we are very happy here.” Ms Kaur’s daughter, Aafreen, was born in Australia, but as her parents weren’t permanent residents at the time, also has to get an Australian citizenship. “My daughter doesn’t know she is from India, she doesn’t know much about Indian culture, she just think she’s Australian,” Ms Kaur said. “Our parents speak Punjabi and we try to teach our daughter Punjabi so she can speak with them, but she doesn’t like it. It’s very hard for her.” At this stage, Ms Kaur and her family intend on living in western Sydney their whole lives. “We feel it’s a bit quieter here than the other parts of the city, and we love to live here,” she said. Expecting their second child in the near future, the family will have a new baby boy or girl that is an Australian citizen from the day it is born.

Pair recovering well after shooting Nepean Hospital thanks community for its support following horrifying incident last week JADE ALIPRANDI
Nepean Hospital security guard has been discharged from hospital and a police officer remains in a stable condition in the wake of last week’s shooting at Nepean Hospital. Security guard Barry Jennings and Senior Constable Luke Warburton were both shot once in different parts of the leg when a patient, and registered nurse from Westmead Hospital, took control of Senior Warburton’s firearm last Tuesday, January 12. Nepean Hospital’s Acting General Manager, Brett Williams, addressed the media to thank the public for its response following the incident. “We here at Nepean Hospital would like to thank the community for its ongoing support,” he said. “We have been overwhelmed with messages of compassion.” Mr Williams read a statement from Mr Jennings’ family about the care he has been receiving since the incident. “We would like to thank the community and Nepean Hospital staff for their kind words, support and care over the last couple of days,” the statement said.
A
“Barry has undergone surgery and is recovering well and is in high spirits surrounded by family, friends and colleagues. “He is looking forward to returning to work soon.” Mr Williams said he was proud of the staff at Nepean Hospital, considering the horrifying incident that took place there last week. “I would like to acknowledge our courageous staff, patients and visitors who were in the Emergency Department and who showed great bravery assisting those who were injured,” he said. “I am proud of the professionalism of all our staff and how they have responded. “And I’d also like to thank NSW Police for their ongoing efforts.” Patients in the Emergency Department on the night of the shooting have also praised the response. “The response was excellent. The nursing staff were brilliant. They were very quick to act,” Jodie Bennett told the ABC. “Two nurses in particular were great in regards to my son and I. One came in to make sure we had the door closed and curtain closed.” Senior Constable Warburton remains in hospital recovering from his injuries.

Australia Day celebrations Australia Day is the most important celebration of our country. In Penrith, Australia Day at the Lakes is the perfect place for family and friends to celebrate what’s great about the place they call home. Penrith Council is extremely proud of this free annual event and appreciate our sponsors who help make this possible. From humble beginnings, it has evolved into an important regional celebration which includes live musical entertainment, shows for the kids and a fireworks finale. Held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, this unique celebration offers something for everyone. Multi ARIA and MTV Australia award winner Shannon Noll will be performing some of his biggest hits and local pop, hiphop and R’n’B super group NeWest will entertain with their energetic singing, rapping and dancing. The young at heart can dance along with SplashDance and star of NickJr’s ‘Play along with Sam’, Sam Moran. The thrills are back with two performances from Freestyle Kings – Aus-
tralia’s awesome freestyle motocross team specialising in FMX shows. And to top it all off the annual fireworks spectacular will bring an end to what will be a great Australia Day. I invite you to come along on Tuesday and share in the spirit. Entertainment starts at 6pm and there is a free shuttle bus service operating from 5pm-10pm between the northern side of Penrith Station to the Regatta Centre. Council is also proud to hold a citizenship ceremony on Australia Day to welcome new Australians to our City. More than 800 people receive their citizenship in Penrith each year. Some have lived in Australia for many years, others have arrived quite recently. Australia’s heritage is made richer by contributions from people from all continents and cultures and we welcome them to our City. Council wishes everyone an enjoyable Australia Day, for more details visit penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ausday.

Steps taken to protect environment Businesses to be monitored after damage caused by St Marys factory fire last year DALE DRINKWATER
isky businesses will be monitored under a rigorous compliance campaign by Penrith Council, after a damaging fire at a St Marys factory early last year. Just last month, Council launched Operation Proactive to ensure businesses in Penrith’s industrial areas operate safely to protect the community and the environment from industrial pollution. While the majority of local industrial businesses comply with environmental and planning requirements, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said there is room for improvement. “Our health and the health of our environment demands nothing less,” she said. Council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will regularly inspect high risk sites and issue substantial fines when sites are not following development consent conditions. The operation is partly in response to a factory fire in Severn Street, St Marys, in January last year, that caused bio-diesel to leak into the surrounding South Creek and Ropes Creek. “This fire caused significant damage
R
to property and the environment,” Cr McKeown said. In May, Greens Councillor Michelle Tormey requested that Council take preventative measures to protect the waterways, a call she said has not completely been answered. “I requested a report to the Council on the event and in particular requested the water quality testing results be released,” she said. “To date this information has not been received.” A Council spokesperson said the factory that burned down is no longer contributing pollution to the creek. “The site is being remediated and there is no longer any waste oil or other products stored there,” she said. However, groups such as the South Creek Bass Club continue to raise concerns with the water quality of South Creek. South Creek Bass Club member and fisherman Aaron Horne said South Creek has not been managed well enough. “We are treating the creeks in western Sydney like we treated the Parramatta River in the 1970s,” he said. “There’s pipes leading into South Creek from everywhere and there’s not one thing done to protect it.”

Gum tree concern The recent storms around Penrith and the sad loss of the life of a man at Emu Plains last week should provide the Council with enough information, and more reasons, to listen to the local ratepayers when they request the removal of potentially-dangerous gum trees from their properties. Admittedly, a large number of these trees were in place when the housing was built, but residences and gums do no mix. The Council has even planted these trees in established housing areas under their own greening programs. Ample evidence exists of the danger these trees pose to housing during periods of high winds and heavy rain. These trees become top heavy and their shallow root systems become water logged, and all that is needed is a decent gust of wind for them to fall over. Common sense must prevail over tree preservation for preservation sake. If a pragmatic approach is not taken with this issue, further property damage and personal injuries are the likely outcomes. Where do priorities lie?
AUSTRALIA
WW20933
www.mastercoachingpenrith.com.au
Last year Premier Baird released his new plan for NSW called “State Priorities”. It is a disappointing document. Across the 30 priorities and eight pages of the
Premier’s glossy plan there is no mention of agriculture, primary industries, rural affairs or regional development. Regional NSW is entirely absent from the Premier’s plan for the future of the state. It is as if any place outside Sydney just does not exist. It is an omission that is both stunning and sobering. The picture on the cover is of Sydney’s skyscrapers. The Premier’s focus begins and ends with the Sydney CBD. NSW needs a new set of “State Priorities”. It needs a plan for all the state and all the people of NSW – whether they live in Sydney, regional towns or rural areas. LUKE FOLEY, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
Shorten must go I agree, Bill Shorten needs to go if Labor is any chance of winning the election. If Malcolm Turnbull wants to guarantee victory, the best thing he could do would be to go to an election now as he’d romp it in and get a mandate for the next three years. However, I have a feeling a few things need to be put on the table first such as a rise to the GST. Whether or not Malcolm Turnbull can convince the electorate, and the states, that this is a good idea is the big elephant in the room for the forthcoming election. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, CRANEBROOK

Wear the cost for the right shoe Cutting corners on school shoes can have dangerous and uncomfortable results JADE ALIPRANDI
t’s that time of year again when you and the kids set out on a shopping adventure for back to school supplies. But what many parents can get wrong is buying a good, protective pair of school shoes. Podiatrist Dr Brenden Brown from A Step Ahead Foot and Ankle Care in Penrith says parents should know it is a case of you get what you pay for. “Each type of shoe isn’t just a schoolbased shoe; it’s a netball, basketball, run for the bus kind of shoe – it does a heap of activity during the day,” he told the Weekender. “It’s worth sinking a little bit of money into it.” Dr Brown said most times parents are thinking of the year ahead and will buy a bigger shoe to last until the following year. “Children’s feet don’t actually grow that much in a year – it’s generally around one size bigger,” he said. The Athlete’s Foot offers advice online to parents that includes buying a lightweight shoe so there isn’t as much weight to carry around for a child, putting pressure on the ankles.
I
“Another thing to look for is to make sure the shoe doesn’t bend in the middle and to check that it only bends at the toes,” Dr Brown said. “The shoe all round should feel very firm, including around the heel.” Dr Brown said to be mindful of the ‘scale’ where laced shoes sit at the top as good shoes, followed by buckled or velcro shoes and slip on. “Laced shoes hold the foot in place and the foot isn’t working to keep the shoe on,” he said. “The foot is constantly working at keeping the slip on shoe on which isn’t good.” A former ambassador for Clark’s Australia, Dr Brown reminds parents to use these tips as a guideline when it comes to buying protective shoes for children to wear to school.

Walking in Bob’s footsteps: Event continues to raise funds
Family saves injured bird and urges community to be aware DALE DRINKWATER
fter saving a bird whose feet were hooked and shackled together by a lure, three young boys and their dad are calling on the community to think about the environment. Kingswood dad Chris White and his three sons Nate, 7, Chet, 8, and Kurt, 10, were testing out their new fishing rods near the Nepean River, when they saw a distressed bird on the water. “Chet noticed the bird flapping near the boat in the water and he ran over and said it had a fishing hook stuck in it,” Mr White said. Together, they tried to hold the bird down to get the three hooks out of each of its feet, that were restricting it from moving. “There was a gentleman there, Craig Anderson from Maritime Services, and he gave us a hand. Between us all we held it down, I had to cut the barbs off the hooks with the pliers,” he said. “He was only young, he would have died for sure if we didn’t take it out.” While Mr White was relieved the bird was freed, he said this incident served as a swift reminder to make sure everyone takes their belongings with them when they leave. eeping her husband’s memory alive, Carol Wilson, of Kingswood, is hoping people are ready to walk for charity this coming March. Ms Wilson’s husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and after seeing what suffering children go through when they have the disease, he decided to create a fundraising event called ‘Bob (Tug) Wilson’s Walk for Kids with Cancer’. Mr Wilson passed away just three weeks before the first event was meant to take place, but Ms Wilson and the team of
K
walkers still went ahead with the event – a 34 day walk from Coolangatta, Queensland to Canberra, that raised $74,000. The walk has developed over time and has become widely popular, having been awarded with a ‘Lifetime Partner Award’ by the Children’s Hospital at Westmead for raising in excess of $150,000 in 2015. “The walks have been amazing and what we have been able to achieve has been wonderful,” Ms Wilson said. The goal this year is to raise $250,000. Participants will walk from the Sydney Opera House to Manly. To register, visit walkforkidswithcancer2016.gofundraise.com.au.
Chet and his dad, Chris, with RMS’ Craig Anderson freeing the bird during the recent holidays Heritage spokesperson said discarded fishing products can have unintended but disastrous impacts on our native wildlife. “The shortest piece of line or the smallest hook or lead weight left behind can injure or kill wildlife,” she said. “Plastic bags, bait bags and nets left behind also pose a very serious hazard to marine life.” For more information, visit www.dpi. nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational.

hile it shouldn’t take a concerted effort to ensure women have a voice, Penrith Council has taken the next step to make sure of it. Later this month Penrith Council will host an education and training program for women, Empowering Women in Local Government, to encourage women to start using their voice. Mayor Karen McKeown, who is Penrith’s
W
first female Mayor in 10 years, said she was delighted by the opportunity to give women a stronger voice in local government. “There is a level of inequity with the amount of female representation in local government,” she said. “Penrith Council has been at the forefront of gender equity for some time now and has been recognised for its programs to provide equity in its workforce.” For more information on the program, visit www.algwa.org.au.

At a presentation ceremony at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre last month, Ms Isaaks was recognised for her exceptional volunteer work in raising $2000 for Nepal earthquake victims. Penrith High School Principal, Kristine MacPhail, said Ms Isaaks used her own initiative and leadership skills to achieve her fantastic outcomes. “Gabrielle has shown tremendous leadership, vision and dedication in her volunteering efforts,” she said. “At Penrith High School we have a strong focus on community involvement and social responsibility and Gabrielle’s efforts are a testament to this.” Ms Isaaks, who has just completed Year 12, travelled to Nepal to distribute the funds to local groups, and inspired and motivated other Penrith students to support a local school in Nepal. The award was sponsored by local Penrith business, Law Partners, whose Principal, Chantille Khoury, commended Ms Isaaks for her endeavours. “Gabrielle’s efforts to fundraise for

The transformation of land on Union Road and another site on Reserve Street, Penrith, are both one step closer, now Expressions of Interest (EOI) from investors have closed. Penrith City Council’s Economic Initiatives Manager said investor response to the EOI for the city centre had been strong and Council hopes to finalise a shortlist of proponents by March. After that, a Request for Proposal process can get underway and successful proponents expand on ideas, that fit with Council’s vision. Between the two separate sites, Council aims to provide 1000 car parks, apartments, restaurants, cafes and bars plus aged care and seniors housing. Building up into the sky could be the next trend in the Penrith area, as Penrith City Council is seeking to amend their Penrith Local Environment Plan 2010. Council is looking to increase current building height and floor space ratio controls for land identified as a ‘Key Site’. A report to Council in December suggested that it is important to apply a contemporary approach to managing how higher buildings are facilitated in Penrith, and this can provide such a mechanism.
Council has received planning proposals that could deliver up to 4,000 apartments in the city centre. 2,000 residential dwellings have been proposed for the ‘Parkview’ site on Station Street, and will include a combination of apartment types with solar access, cross ventilation and views to the Blue Mountains. The Sinclair Hyundai site at High and Union Streets is another proposal for a mixed use development that includes 850 apartments. A third proposal is for another mixed use development, this time for Thornton, that endeavours to increase the supply and choice of housing across Penrith and maximise livability. Council has received a development application to demolish the existing fast food restaurant at 199-201 Boronia Road, St Marys and build a brand new one. If approved, the $3 million commercial development will see the new fast food restaurant trade 24 hours a day. The site is currently the location of McDonald’s St Marys North. The first Council meeting of 2016 will be an Ordinary Council Meeting at 7.30pm on Monday, February 8. It is open to the public.

Llandilo’s Jamel Dib has been mentored by Sydney Water’s Sherryn Cabardo DALE DRINKWATER
1-year-old Llandilo woman, Jamel Dib is working hard against adverse science and engineering industry trends, where women struggle to find work and keep it. Alongside Western Sydney University (WSU) and Sydney Water, the science, business and commerce student has and will again undertake a mentoring program to connect herself to work. Ms Dib said it’s difficult for someone in her field of studies to even get their foot in the door, let alone keep it there. “You need to know people in the industry, and in the program we learnt a lot about preparing ourselves to network and stay connected with everyone,” she said. Ms Dib will be keeping in contact with her mentor, Sherryn Cabardo, a Sydney
2
Water Business Customer Representative, after she completes the next round of the program. “WSU have decided to continue it in the spring semester, and I hope to do it again and I think other people should definitely take the opportunity,” she said. “A number of girls that did do it came out with internships which is great, and I hope to get that in the next program.” The Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) program is designed to connect young women to inspire them and close the gap between university learning and real life engineering practices. WSU’s Chancellor, Peter Shergold said they hope more young women, like Ms Dib, choose to pursue careers in engineering and science. “More women than men are now attending university in Australia, but the number of women studying science and engineering is low,” he said.

o you have digital overload? Those of us who are parents have most likely read an article or heard from experts about the dangers of our children having too much ‘screen time’. Many of us have changed their children’s habits and put strategies in place to ensure that screen time is limited. But have you done the same for yourself? Although most of us are not spending hours playing ‘mindless’ games or staring inactively at screens, our days are often spent viewing many types of information. Social media, podcasts, emails, videos, news feeds and so on, can overload our brains, to the point where we are distracted, irritable and constantly tired. Research tells us that the promise of new information triggers the release of dopamine, which in turn makes us more alert to the possibility of more pleasure, creating a cycle that lays new neural pathways. That is, our brain has been taught to keep seeking out this ‘pleasure’.
2016
In contrast, many of us rarely open a book for pleasure during work periods. And when we do, we find it hard to slow down long enough to concentrate on what we are reading. For myself, holiday times are when I catch up on my reading when there are no other distractions vying for my attention. But reading books may just be the antidote to our fast-paced information seeking. While books can help us to unplug from the unrelenting flow of digital information, it also takes discipline to change our digital habits. Few of us actually need to answer emails at night, so set a time after which you don’t check your phone or computer (in fact, turn them all off). Commit to at least two or three nights of no TV before bedtime, and read a book instead. And most importantly, never have your phone in your bedroom at night. This removes any temptation to check emails or social media at 3am! Undertaking these changes is likely to reduce your stress levels and increase your energy levels.
S
tart-ups come in all shapes and all sizes, with personalities that are as diverse as the people who run them. In Australia, we are seeing an entrepreneurial culture continue to gain momentum as stories of breakout successes from incubators and tech startups on TV appear along with political funding announcements in this space. I am seeing more emerging entrepreneurs begin to believe that this is the only way to succeed as a young business. Realistically, today’s stereotypical start-up culture can be highly effective, because their hours are flexible, workers are happier and in many cases, more productive. Offices are also fun and clients get a positive first impression. This type of culture however, like any other, has drawbacks to go along with its benefits. The stereotypical start-up culture is not appropriate for every new business. We are seeing young people start businesses with seed funding or investment, and also dangerously getting themselves into debt. We need to ensure a balance is found.

Sure there are stories of success, including people being down to their last credit card or dollars and pulling themselves out of trouble to succeed but more often than not, failure is a genuine occurrence. It is still important to get advice, plan and only involve people you trust. Don’t always be swept up by the glossy stories. Being in business involves a lot of hard work and no success comes easily, especially in today’s competitive and innovative world of business. Your office doesn’t have to look like Google’s. You don’t have to be ‘off the tools’ within a year. Don’t let outside influences and stories make you deviate from your plan, because every business is different. Don’t forget your bottom line when working, because without sufficient revenue, your business won’t be able to succeed. Don’t lose focus on what’s really going to drive your business forward. Don’t build a business that is a carbon copy of one you’ve already seen or read about. Think carefully about what your business needs to be successful, and how you want your brand to be perceived.

fter what some would consider to be a life-long friendship, locals Tony Ferguson and Dr Bill Moss will be joining forces to help combat obesity in the Penrith area. The teams from High Street Family Doctors and High Street Family Pharmacy, both located in the same building, will work together to help those who want to lose weight, but don’t know how. “Many people make resolutions to lose weight around this time of year but don’t know how to do it which is where we come in,” Tony Ferguson from High Street Family Pharmacy said. “The great thing about this association is that there are a range of professional people on hand to give advice about everything to do with weight loss. “Consultation is a very important element of the process.” Dr Bill Moss from High Street Family Doctors said they are working together to achieve a common goal – combating obesity for a better lifestyle. “We are both interested in weight
loss and the illnesses that come from it such as diabetes, high blood pressure and joint pains – which will all be less of a problem once the weight is lost,” he said. “We are supporting each other as much as we are working together.” In 2012, 59.8 per cent of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District population aged 16 years and over were either overweight or obese, compared with 49.7 per cent of the overall NSW population with the area also possessing the highest overall prevalence of overweight or obese people among the eight NSW metropolitan local health districts, making this partnership important within the area. The program also offers the opportunity of speaking with university qualified dietician Jamie-Lee Farrugia. High Street Family Doctors has welcomed High Street Family Pharmacy into the building, which is at 243 High Street, Penrith (near Doonmore St). One of the biggest stories the Weekender covered on January 23, 2015, was on a blaze that tore through a factory in St Marys. The fire ripped apart a business in Severn Street, and filled the blue weekend skies with thick black smoke. Emergency services received a whopping 89 ‘000’ calls, that resulted in 130 firefighters rushing to the scene in the Dunheved Business Park. The fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of materials being stored at the factory, and has since caused bio-diesel to leak into the surrounding South Creek and Ropes Creek. “The fire was in a business that recycles disused oils; the building where the oil was kept was well alight when our crews arrived,” Superintendent Tom Cooper of NSW Fire and Rescue said. Also in this edition, as the State Election loomed closer then Treasurer Andrew Constance sat with Liberal candidate Bernard Bratusa and promised more jobs for the region through infrastructure. And we covered preparations for Australia Day, with another major event planned for Penrith Lakes to celebrate our national day.

Olympics left a huge legacy
A
s we paddle into another Olympic year, it’s never too early to look back at one of the biggest events in the world that placed a spotlight on our great city. The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games created the legacy of the Sydney International Regatta Centre, and placed Penrith on the global map. Rowers and canoeists came from all over the world to train and compete at the centre’s facilities, that feature a 2.3 kilometre rowing and sprint kayak waterway,
and a 1.5 kilometre warm up lake. The centre was purpose built to Olympics and Paralympics standards, and the Olympic ‘brand’ is still evident throughout much of the infrastructure on site. Australia placed fourth out of 199 countries in the games, that were held between September and October, coming in behind the USA, Russia and China respectively. In the 12 rowing events, Australian Olympians placed in the top three four times, and in the canoe sprint, Australian teams placed in the top three just twice out of another 12 events. Slalom was held at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium for the Games, and unfor-
tunately Australia did not place in the top three during any of the four canoe and kayak events. Despite Australia’s results on the water, the unprecedented amount of international exposure during the Olympic Games period turned the focus to Penrith’s world class facilities. Both the Sydney International Regatta Centre and the Penrith Whitewater Stadium are established as unique facilities in both western Sydney and the state. 16 years later, the centres are still bringing tourism to the area and will play host to this year’s canoe and rowing Olympians in its world class training facilities.

PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Emulating Miss Bette KATE REID
S
ince 2009 Aussie singer Catherine Alcorn has been creating cabaret shows based on some of the world’s most iconic female performers.
Her attraction to the music and lives of confident, hardworking women is unsurprising when you delve a little deeper into Catherine’s story. After a successful career in TV production, the talented performer made the decision to quit her job to focus on music. As the type of entertainer who likes to be in the driver’s seat, she took on the
“Even before I was doing this show I’ve been likened to her”
role of producer, creator and star in the hit shows ‘Go Your Own Way: The Story of Christine McVie’, and ‘The Divine Miss Bette’, which will take to The Joan stage this weekend. “I think that as an artist, and as a self producing artist as well, it’s really important to know both sides of the operation of your business,” Catherine said. And know her business she does. After creating ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ in 2009, Catherine found that her personality lent itself perfectly to portraying the larger-than-life star. “There’s not a lot of difference between me and Bette,” the talented performer laughed when asked how she goes about emulating such a well known personality. “Even before I was doing this show I’ve always been likened to her, people have told me that I remind them of her.” ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ has toured around the country, headlining festivals including Melbourne Cabaret Festival. While the show includes some of Bette’s most iconic songs, such as ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, it will also give audiences a taste of the star’s earlier work. “There will probably be a few songs people wouldn’t associate with Bette Midler, like ‘Delta Dawn’,” Catherine said. “We’re sort of taking it back to her rockier days.” Those rockier days in the 70s saw Bette performing regularly at the Continental Baths in New York City, a gay bathhouse that was run by a man by the name of Steve Ostrow. In a lovely serendipitous twist, Catherine discovered – while creating the show in 2009 – that Steve was living just down the road from her in Sydney. The pair started working together on vocal lessons and although he didn’t train Catherine to sound like Bette, Steve did provide her with stories and memories that would become crucial in the creation of her show. “He gave me this one degree separation insight into this women I was about to portray on stage,” Catherine said. Audiences can catch Catherine in ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ at The Joan on Friday, January 22 at 8pm and Saturday, January 23 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $50-$55. cclaimed Australian actor and singer John Waters will be heading back to western Sydney next month with his hit show ‘Lennon: Looking Through A Glass Onion’. Waters first created and performed this part concert, part spoken word show in 1992 and since then has entertained audiences around the world with this celebration of the life of one of music’s greatest legends. In 2014, Waters also had the chance to fulfil a long time ambition by taking the show to New York, a place that was very dear to John Lennon’s heart.
‘Lennon: Looking Through A Glass Onion’ features a catalogue of Lennon and The Beatles hits, including ‘Imagine’, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ and ‘Jealous Guy’. With more than two decades worth of rave reviews, and a performer who is hugely passionate about his subject matter at the helm, ‘Lennon: Looking Through A Glass Onion’ should be on every Lennon fan’s must see list. ‘Lennon: Looking Through A Glass Onion’ will be on at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, February 5 at 8pm. Tickets are $45. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9677 4916.

TV NEWS
Ê Channel Ten will host ‘Australia Day 2016’, live from the steps of the Sydney Opera House next week. The live concert will be hosted by Grant Denyer and feature Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Roy & HG. The event will also include performances by Jessica Mauboy, Kate Ceberano, Glenn Shorrock, Cyrus Villanueve, Justice Crew, Thirsty Merc and a reunited Bachelor Girl. Ê
Can’t say I got into this one at all but CBS in America has confirmed Channel Nine sitcom ‘Mike and Molly’, starring Melissa McCarthy, has been axed after six seasons. Meanwhile, once popular HBO show ‘Girls’ has also been axed. That too will end after six seasons.
Ê Because we all love cooking shows so much (insert sarcasm here), Channel Seven has announced auditions for a new ‘dessert show’ project. Contestants will have to show off their cooking skills as they work against the clock, to impress the judges and deliver amazing dessert dishes – certainly sounds like a rip-off of ‘The Great Australian Bake Off’ to me! To apply, visit go.mycastingnet.com/Apply/ Show/DessertShow. Ê
Bear Grylls will return
to Discovery next month for the second season of ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’, which sees celebrities mix it with the famed survivalist. This season’s celebrities include Kate Winslet, Kate Hudson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Michelle Rodriguez, Drew Brees, Ed Helms, James Marsden and Michael B. Jordan. The show airs February 2 at 7.30pm.
Ê Netflix has confirmed the second season of ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ will premiere on March 18. It returns with 13 one hour episodes. Meanwhile, ‘Fuller House’ has been given a release date, it will premiere February 26 on Netflix. Ê NBA superstar LeBron James is becoming a reality star. No, it’s not a Kardashians style show or anything like that, it’s more like an episode of ‘Bar Rescue’. James last week announced he’s launching a new show called ‘Cleveland Hustles’ on CNBC in America, which will feature the Cavaliers star meeting with struggling local businesses to help turn things around. The details surrounding the project are very slim at this stage but the show is being produced by the same company that produces mega hit ‘Top Chef’.

Australia Day rocks the Lakes Sydney International Regatta Centre for once again hosting the iconic event. “Sydney International Regatta Centre has been a host and major sponsor of our Australia Day Celebrations at the Lakes for the last 18 years,” she said. “Without the generous support of this local icon we couldn’t offer such a great free celebration for our community each year.” Sydney International Regatta Centre Venue Manager, Kevin Flynn said they are delighted to still be a part of the celebrations after so many years. “This is a major cultural event for the people of western Sydney and a tradition for Penrith families,” he said. Council has placed a smoking ban on the family event and has asked the community to refrain from bringing alcohol, glass, unsealed bottles and pets. This year, the event site will be on the warm up lake, not the grandstand area, and Council reminds families to bring cash as there will be no ATMs on site. There will be free shuttle buses to the venue from 5pm to 10pm between the northern side of Penrith Station to the venue. For more information, visit www. penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ausday.

ootball season is just around the corner and now is the time to prepare. You’ll need more than just shiny new boots and shin guards. A mouthguard is essential for adults and children who play many winter sports and may prevent life-changing injuries. Here are a few ways that they protect you: • May help reduce concussion • Protects against soft tissue injuries • Protects against jaw joint injuries • Cushions teeth against impact • Helps prevent neck and jaw injuries But not all mouthguards are the same. More people are choosing custom mouthguards, as there is a growing trend in injuries sustained by people who wear the inadequate ‘boil and bite’
F
style. A custom mouthguard is fitted and manufactured by a knowledgeable and experienced dental professional. They reduce the chance of common injuries such as jaw fracture and dislocation; tooth loss and chipping. You can choose from three types of mouthguard: junior (light); professional (medium); elite (heavy). We consider which type of sport you play, and at what level, to determine the type we recommend for your needs. Why choose a custom mouthguard? Because only a ‘custom-fit’ mouthguard offers the best comfort and protection against injury. Some of the benefits include: • Greater protection and comfort
• Clear speech • Easier breathing • Choice of three types of durability • Choice of colours and designs • No gagging All custom made mouthguards, manufactured by Wisdom Denture Clinic, come with the wearer’s name and number inscribed just in case it gets lost. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the cost too, as all custom mouthguards may be claimed from your health fund for a rebate of $30-$90. So don’t wait, contact your nearest dental professional today and enquire about a custom mouthguard. Enjoy sport to the fullest with the best protection available.

t’s one thing to hear that a large percentage of adults experience back pain on the job at a cost of billions of dollars in medical fees, drugs and lost time at work each year. We’ve come to expect back pain that stems from improper lifting techniques, engaging in “weekend warrior” activities and the simple act of growing older. But did you know that children suffer from back pain, and that the reports of this issue have been rising for at least a decade? So what’s driving the rate of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among our children? While many of the factors that contribute to back pain among adults also apply to young people, they also face specific risks that should concern parents, schools and the medical community. Children and adolescents spend a great part of their day at school sitting on chairs at desks that are the wrong size for their bodies. In addition, it is not uncommon to see a classroom filled with furniture that is mismatched. Chair seats are often too high or too low for the desk heights that they have been paired with. This isn’t to say that instructors are not sensitive to the dimensional differences of their students. But there is a noted lack of ergonomic guidance for educational institutions to depend on. To complicate the matter further, children are more sedentary and less physically active than health professionals and government agencies recommend. The combination of too much sitting and poorly designed or misfitting furniture is a recipe for disaster

in the form of MSDs. Case in point: deformation due to increased stress on spinal structures, as reported by multiple researchers. In a recent ergonomics study by scientists at the University of Lisbon, 58 per cent of children surveyed reported back pain at least one day during a three month period. Assessments of the furniture used by the children found that they were sitting on chairs and working at desks that were too high for them. The data also reflected that a large difference between desk height and elbow height was significantly associated with the occurrence of upper back pain. The discomfort lasted after the school day was over. The researchers found that sedentary physical activity had a significant association with the occurrence of back pain in girls. Note that, as compared to the boys, the girls in this study did not practice the recommended 60 minutes per day of moderate physical activity and had a sedentary lifestyle. And finally, as you might expect, the frequency of back pain was shown to increase with the ages of the children being studied. Surprisingly, the researchers said the results showed no correlation between back pain and backpack weight or body mass index. Regardless of the causes, and the complexity of their associations, students who experience fatigue and pain while at school are challenged to achieve their primary goal: focus to learn. Unfortunately, research has shown that the poor posture and activity habits described

in these youths will follow them into adulthood when they will be even harder to break. What is the answer? First, more research, but in the meantime, efforts should be made to limit exposure by focusing on the school environment. Ergonomic principles must be considered by administrators in order to minimise musculoskeletal problems that may result from unsuitable furniture design. At a minimum, classroom furniture must fit the needs of children and adolescents at all stages of development from late elementary school through to college. Better yet, it should be universal, adjustable, mobile and designed with input from children and adults.

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING f you have had a long festive season then you are probably one of the hundreds of thousands of Australians who find themselves unsatisfied with their excess body weight or sluggish physical condition at the turn of the calendar. A new year brings the opportunity to start with a clean slate. The great new intentions means it’s easy to get started but unfortunately for a large proportion it does not go much further. Here are some tips to help make fitness goals a lifelong routine rather than another resolution. Direction Have a goal. Set a realistic six week goal to motivate you straight away and a 12 month goal to chip away at. Speak to a fitness professional about a workout program, check in weekly to assist you to stay on track. Support Train with a friend or family member. Make yourself accountable. If you don’t turn up, then you are not only letting yourself down but also your training partner. When you do train together, you can have a laugh and get your workout done in no time. Timing Train first thing in the morning. Sacrifice a little sleep to get it done first thing. Don’t leave it for after work. Lots of things happen that can make you miss the session. Kick start your day with some exercise and you will be surprised how much energy you have for your working day. Fun Make it enjoyable. If you hate the treadmill then get involved in group

fitness classes, put on the gloves and get through an awesome fat burning boxing class. Watch your stress levels go down almost as quick as your body fat. If you have never used the weights area in a gym, then I strongly advise you get in there straight away. If you’re unsure on how to use the equipment try a personal training session to get you started or a weights based group fitness class. It is one of the best fat burning tools.
Nutrition It is important to eat more whole nutritious foods such as fresh fruit and vegies, and avoid processed foods. Where possible choose water or tea over soft drinks and cordials. Control your portion size, make sure everything is in moderation. Be careful not to skip meals, take healthy food options to work and avoid sugary snacks. You cannot out-train a bad diet!

leep apnoea is when breathing stops more than 30 times during sleep for approximately 10 seconds or more. Sleep apnoea can cause many issues. The most common are: sleepiness during the day, headaches in the morning, confusion, memory loss, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat. Sleep apnoea affected people are also more likely to experience weight gain. The causes of sleep apnoea are divided into three groups: obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive is the most common cause and usually affects people who sleep on their back. Four per cent of males and two per cent of females will suffer from this apnoea. People with this condition will have a history of loud snoring. When the airway becomes obstructed the snoring will stop because the airflow has stopped. During this time the body isn’t getting enough oxygen and will eventually cause the person to awaken with a loud snore to resume breathing. This loud snore usually is followed by gasping for breath and then the person usually falls back to sleep. This cycle is repeated throughout the night, in some cases up to 400 times each night. There are two things to check the severity of the apnoea: length of cycle and how many cycles per night. Prevention: Reduce alcohol intake – alcohol can depress the upper airway muscles and snoring will more likely lead to obstruction. Lose weight – People carrying more weight, especially fat around the neck are

more likely to develop sleep apnoea. Avoid smoking – smoking can narrow the airways increasing the chance of obstruction. Avoid sleeping pills unless necessary. Avoid sleeping on the back – sleep on the side or even tilt the head of the bed upwards. Diet – speak to a dietitian about losing weight.

Treatment: CPAP machines are the most effective method of treatment. They will require an overnight sleep test to be performed to check the level of apnoea disturbance. These tests and machines are available at some pharmacies and sleep clinics. If you have any questions about sleep apnoea please contact your GP or pharmacist.

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING
As the heat rises, we’re all getting more frustrated he Aussie summer is famous all over the world for its healthy dose of sun, sea, surf and socialising. And while the outdoors lifestyle does have its own issues, it’s actually the indoors where NSW residents struggle to cope with the hot season, with nearly half of state residents (48 per cent) suggesting it’s being too hot indoors that really gets their blood boiling – literally! According to new research conducted by Thinkinsulation, the biggest bugbear of summer for three quarters (72 per cent) of Australians is being left dripping with sweat before they’ve even left the house. The home is supposed to be a sanctuary, however 57 per cent of those living in NSW say it’s too hot to sleep at night during summer, even in the buff. Almost a quarter (24 per cent) have also been left feeling frustrated by the elevated electricity bills from keeping their living spaces comfortably air-con cool. For the ladies it gets even worse, with two thirds (67 per cent) of those surveyed lamenting how makeup just slips and smudges off their face and 55 per cent are left with a frizzy mess when trying to style hair in the heat at the home. Throw in a cocktail of increased numbers of bugs, flies and mosquitos,
T
which annoyed 52 per cent of those surveyed and it starts looking like avoiding the indoors is better for the temperament of people all over the country. The most important room to keep cool in a home is the bedroom for over half the population (55 per cent), so people can get valuable sleep. In comparison, the research showed less than 15 per cent are fed up of burning their feet on the hot ground and just one in 10 are bothered by sun cream running into their eyes. Claire Cunliffe, Marketing Manager at Knauf Insulation Australia, said it’s not such a great surprise. “For years, Australians have mastered the art of treating those small annoyances of being outdoors in the summer as part and parcel of enjoying living in a hot climate. However, when it comes to the home, not many have learned how to bring more ‘coolth’ into their lives; that is, to keep the inside of the home cool and the heat out,” she said. “Our research revealed a staggering one in five even believe it can be hotter inside their homes, than outside in the sun! “What many people don’t realise is that insulating your home can improve the comfort of living in the hottest months by
keeping the warm air out, whilst saving on average $450 per year on energy bills.” Installing insulation is an easily achievable DIY activity if certain safety steps are taken, head to thinkinsulation.com.au for helpful DIY tutorial videos. The website is packed with helpful tips and tricks to help Aussies introduce more coolth into their lives this summer. It also offers advice on

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Have you been insensitive? Resist the temptation to antagonise loved ones or say things that unintentionally hurt others. Words are powerful weapons so use them wisely. When it comes to a friend or colleague, take the time to walk a mile in their shoes. Then you’ll have some understanding of what they’re going through. Jupiter and the north node link up in your wellbeing zone, so try be the healthiest and fittest you can.

HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
You’re feeling optimistic about the future but don’t spoil success by criticising family and friends. Avoid talking about politics and religion – keep the conversation light and non-controversial! And take particular care when commuting, computing, texting and travelling on Monday. Jupiter and the north node connect in your creativity zone on Friday. So it’s time to unleash your inner muse, as you express yourself in colourful ways.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Mercury finally moves forwards on Monday night, so all forms of communication should gradually improve. Time to express yourself and verbalise your feelings in forthright ways. The more honest and open you are with family members, the better the week will be. Plus, with Jupiter and the north node hooking up in your home zone, there is much love and happiness to be gained.

Nurture loved ones but don’t smother them Crabs – allow other people plenty of room to express themselves. Jupiter and the north node join forces in your neighbourhood zone on Friday. If you contribute your numerous talents within your local community, satisfying connections will follow.

From Tuesday onwards it’s time to beautify your home or work environment and have some fun, as Mercury and Venus enhance charm, conversation, enjoyment – and love! If you’re single, you could find yourself drawn to a cute colleague, customer or client. Jupiter and the north node form an auspicious conjunction in your cash zone on Friday. So it’s up to you to find enjoyable ways to make more money.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Mercury is finally moving forwards so sport, hobbies, creativity and self-expression should all flourish from Tuesday. Nurturing friendships is also favoured, as you get deep-and-meaningful with someone special on Saturday. With Jupiter and the north node linking up in your sign, strive to be less cautious and much more adventurous. Oprah Winfrey: “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
From Tuesday onwards is the time to tackle domestic chores you’ve been putting off for some time, as Mercury goes direct in your home zone. With Jupiter and the north node pairing up in your spirituality zone on Friday there is much inner peace to be found via calming activities like meditation, contemplation, yoga or tai chi as you connect with your inner voice.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
With Mars in your sign, you’re frustrated by some people’s lack of motivation but it’s not the week to push buttons. Instead, make connections with friends who focus on solutions; be proactive; and stay positive. Jupiter and the north node fire up your networking zone on Friday, so fabulous opportunities and success will come via local and international colleagues. But do take special care when posting social media messages.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Saturn is moving slowly through your sign. So you are learning many things about yourself, and letting go of aspects of your personality that are no longer serving you well. Keep re-inventing yourself! Your motto for the moment is from writer Lewis Carroll, “I can’t go back to yesterday – because I was a different person then”. Fabulous opportunities will manifest in 2016, as long as you have the confidence to follow your true destiny.

LIFE & STYLE
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Mercury turns direct early in the week – and then joins up with Pluto on Saturday. Some stubborn Capricorns will suffer from a severe dose of OCD. But clever Caps will use this powerful transformative energy to go in a completely different direction, as you break free and release yourself from the straightjacket of striving to be perfect. Be inspired by Germaine Greer: “Freedom is the freedom to get things wrong as well as right.”
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Many Aquarians will be thrust into the public spotlight, so make sure you’re prepared. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else? You’re keen to take action at work but don’t jump in and be too impulsive. Jupiter and the north node stimulate your shared resources zone so the more generously you share financial ideas with others, the more successful you’ll be.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Tuesday onwards is a good time to be with friends and participate in group activities as you socialise and circulate in style. The current planetary patterns highlight your creative and spiritual side but they also emphasise your tendency to blend fact and fantasy, so try to keep your feet on the ground. Strive to balance daily reality with your rich fantasy life. Virginia Woolf [born on January 25]: “You cannot find peace by avoiding life”.

LEGAL MATTERS
The ins and outs of bail laws in NSW

offender is arrested, charged, and deemed to be fit for release back into the community to return to Court to have their matter heard at a later date. This is the type of bail that was granted to the offender in the above case. The second type of bail is bail granted by a Magistrate or Judge. This occurs when police refuse to grant bail and the matter comes before
a Court, who will deem whether or not granting the offender bail would pose an “unacceptable risk” to the community. An accused person is considered an unacceptable bail risk if they may fail to appear in Court, have committed a serious offence, may be a danger to victims or other members of the community, or there is some risk that they will interfere with evidence or witnesses if they are released. Based on what we know about the case above, it appears that the offender was picked up by police and charged for offences relating to break and enter on the day in question. There is no evidence that he had any prior criminal record at that time. There is some evidence that he had resisted arrest in relation to that offence, but no evidence that he had a history of violence. In the circumstances, police saw it fit to grant the offender bail – a decision that will no doubt continue to polarise members of the community as the case goes to trial.

A violent attack at Nepean Hospital last week, in which a police officer and security guard were shot, has brought back to the fore debate about bail laws in NSW. The media has been rife with argument that last week’s event was a result of the offender having been released on bail only hours before the incident occurred. This article aims to give some insight into NSW bail laws. There are typically two types of bail. The first type is bail granted by the police whereby an

There are several diseases in cats that cause weight loss – the two most common are diabetes and a glandular disorder called hyperthyroidism. In this week’s article, we will focus on the signs, diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is the most common glandular disorder in cats. It is caused by an overactive thyroid gland that produces too much hormone known as T4. The thyroid hormone sets the ‘metabolic rate’ in the body; the more thyroid hormone produced, then the

harder that the body’s cells work and the more energy they use. What are the symptoms of this disorder? Not every cat with this disorder will show the same signs but the most common symptoms are weight loss and an increased appetite. Weight loss is seen in about 95 per cent of cats with this disorder. Other less common signs include excessive thirst, hyperactiv-
ity, poor coat and occasional vomiting. Hyperthyroidism can occur in any breed of cat and occurs almost exclusively in older animals. It is quite rare to see a cat under 10 years of age with this disease. The average age that this disease begins is approximately 12 years. How is it diagnosed? Because several diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism can cause weight loss, diagnosis starts with a blood panel to rule out other problems. In the majority of cases, a thyroid blood test is performed and shows that the hormone is elevated. In some cases, the thyroid level will be normal and it may need to be repeated several weeks later or combined with other hormonal testing. Can it be treated? YES! Treatment is generally very rewarding as you will see your cat’s weight return and the coat return to good condition in a matter of weeks. The most common treatment is daily tablets that blocks the action of the thyroid hormone so it stops making the body work in overdrive. For those of you that can’t give tablets, there is a cream that can be applied on the ears that also treats this disease!

RELIGION
For many people, Christmas and New Year is a time to catch our breath. It is the chance for a rest. A time to get away and have a break. Yet rest is a funny thing. We have these few weeks off over Christmas and New Year to try and recharge our batteries but then we’re back into it again! Madly chasing our tails. Busy. Flat out. School. Sport. So many things crowding into our lives. Some people working six, often seven days a week. Certainly not much chance for rest there! You might be surprised to
Is it time for you to have a real rest? know that the Bible is concerned for both our physical rest and also our spiritual rest.
For example, in the New Testament book of Mark, as Jesus’ popularity is growing, and so many people are keen to meet Him, it is becoming increasingly busy. Jesus says to his disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quite place and get some rest.” Jesus knows how important it is for us to get physical rest; to have a regular break and get away from it all. But there is also spiritual rest. In the New Testament book of Matthew we hear Jesus say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” Here is real rest! Not just for a few days, but rest for all eternity! Peace and satisfaction with God. The joy and contentment of learning from Jesus; knowing that your soul, your very life, is safe for all eternity. Is this a rest that you know?

throughout their infant, preschool and early school years, and should not just be limited to the summer months, as the skills and behaviours taught in lessons need to be practised all year around to allow children to develop at their own pace. Unfortunately the risks posed by drowning do not go away in winter, so neither should the lessons.
Additionally, children under five are just beginning to develop muscle memory, and need constant reinforcement to retain skills previously learnt, so a break in lessons often results in a loss of skills. By taking a break in the cooler months, you may be wasting all the time and money spent on lessons previously. By swimming all year around children remain confident in the water, and remember, regular exercise helps to keep the body healthy and fight off winter illnesses. Of course you must attend a swim school with indoor heated pools, and be sure to use common sense and remove wet clothing, towel dry and cover wet hair, and get warm (a hot shower is a must!) and dry before leaving the swim centre. It is important to remember that learning to swim is not just another option on the list of sports and activities.

Reid NUTRITION
Recently I fell into a very common trap. While working 12pm to 8pm shifts I found myself so hungry on my drive home that I was stopping to buy takeaway a little too often. It was my own fault. I’d overlooked one of the most important aspects of healthy eating; preparation. It’s a trap that all of us, even nutritionists, fall into sometimes. But there’s a few simple things you can do to ensure a busy lifestyle doesn’t get in the way of your healthy eating. First off, never leave the

house without food. Yes, I know, that sounds a bit like food addiction, but hear me out. By popping a small, healthy snack in your bag, like a piece of fruit or a nut bar, you’ll have something to tide you over until you’re able to make or buy a nutritious meal. When it comes to main meals one of the easiest ways to ensure you always have a
healthy option is to do some meal preparation. When you’re cooking dinner make a little extra to take as leftovers for lunch the following day. Make large batches of things like soup, which you can then freeze and defrost when needed. This is a healthier and much more cost effective way to eat than resorting to expensive microwave meals. Salads can also be prepared a few days in advance, just don’t dress them and avoid adding foods like avocado which brown easily. When at work try keeping a stash of microwavable frozen veggies (yes frozen vegetables are just as good for you) in the freezer or some salad in the fridge and a tin of tuna, salmon or four bean mix in your desk drawer for a quick, nutritious meal on those days when you don’t have time to take a full lunch break. Of course eating out is always an option and can still be a healthy choice if you know what to look for. Sushi, salads, sandwiches, Asian cuisine such as Thai beef salad or Vietnamese rice paper rolls are all nutritious options when eating out. At the end of the day, being prepared is the real key to ensure you don’t go off track. Happy eating!

Some common questions when talking about the importance of learning to swim are, “Why should children swim all year round?”, “Surely it is only important to swim in the warm summer months?”, “Won’t my child get sick?” These assumptions are completely incorrect. Learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process, and consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills. Attending swimming lessons makes up an important part of a child’s weekly routine

t’s the biggest event in town and while the world’s top tennis players serve, volley and smash their way towards the first Grand Slam of 2016, a fleet of 110 Kia vehicles will shuttle Australian Open players, officials and fans to where they need to be when they need to be there. Kia’s support of the Australian Open, entering its 15th year, will continue to deliver the support and convenience of a fleet of 110 specially-equipped courtesy vehicles to keep the wheels turning. In handing over the Kia Courtesy Fleet to Tennis Australia’s CEO, Craig Tiley, KMAu Chief Operating Officer Damien Meredith said Kia remained a staunch supporter of tennis in Australia. “As Kia has evolved and grown in Australia there has developed an enormously strong bond of recognition and cooperation between Kia Motors and Tennis Australia, and there are no signs of that commitment wavering,” he said. “The Australian Open is one of the world’s premier sporting events and for Kia Motors to be able to assist with the successful operation of that event is a matter of considerable pride for us.” In accepting the courtesy fleet, Tennis Australia CEO, Craig Tiley, said: “Kia makes an incredible contribution to the running of the Australian Open.” The Australian Open began on Monday and will continue until next weekend.

Stars of the ice coming to Penrith Some of ice hockey’s biggest stars will play in an All-Star Weekend in Penrith in June NATHAN TAYLOR
P
enrith will play host to one of the most entertaining events on the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) calendar when it hosts
the 2016 All-Star Weekend in June. Held on Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12 at Penrith Ice Palace, the AIHL All-Star Weekend will showcase the talent and personalities of the best AIHL players in a series of skills-based competitions and an All-Star hockey game.
Prolific scorer Matt Armstrong and Sydney Bears legend Mike Schlamp will captain the teams in 2016, with each of the 34 All-Stars chosen also competing in at least one of the six novelty contests including Breakaway Challenge, Fastest Skater, Elimination Shootout, Hard-
est Shot, Shooting Accuracy and Puck Control. Speaking with the Weekender, AIHL Commissioner Robert Bannerman said Penrith was an easy choice as the location for the league’s second ever All-Star Weekend. “We have AIHL team the Sydney Bears who play out of Penrith Ice Palace and they’ve been developing and growing their supporter base there,” Mr Bannerman said. “The facility itself is world class and well set up for our needs with an Olympic size ice surface with seating and standing room around the rink. “There’s also plenty of free parking, and Penrith is a convenient location to get to and from the airport with accommodation nearby.” Mr Bannerman said the All-Star Weekend is a great, fun event for fans of all ages to watch some of the best ice hockey players in the southern hemisphere. “You’ll not only see the players’ talents on display as well as their personalities but you’ll also have a great opportunity to meet and interact with them over the weekend,” he said. “On Sunday we’ll have a traditional hockey game where players will be playing for pride and prize money while on Saturday there’ll be a series of skills-based competitions, that are a lot of fun.” If you can’t make it to Penrith Ice Palace across the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, a 90 minute highlights package will be broadcast on Fox Sports on a date to be confirmed. Players will be confirmed and teams will be selected by the captains after the 2016 AIHL season begins in late April. Players will compete for $25,000 in prize money, which will go a long way for some considering the league is largely self-funded. Big crowds are expected to flock to the Ice Palace for the major event. Tickets are now on sale with adult tickets starting at $22.50 per day. Early bird specials are also on offer to local residents. To book or for more information, visit www.theAIHL.com.

Naomi Stalenberg While making a national team is always a lifelong dream for some athletes, that wasn’t quite the case for Stalenberg growing up. “When I was a kid starting out I just enjoyed playing with the boys, but as my cricket got a lot more serious, it became a bit of dream,” she said. “I’d always watch the Aussie girls play on TV and wondered if I’d be there one day. I’m only 21, I still have a long way to go but I’m pretty happy with how things are going.” All T20I matches will be broadcast live on the Nine Network.

ocal Sydney Thunder WBBL cricketer Naomi Stalenberg has expressed her shock and excitement at being named in the Southern Stars squad for next week’s T20I series against India. The 21-year-old Penrith Cricket Club all-rounder was one of five NSW Breakers players selected in the 13-woman T20 squad and is on track to make her international debut next week. “I was pretty ecstatic, I was absolutely surprised and I had no idea that was going to happen,” Stalenberg told the Weekender. “I never expected to make the Australian team if ever but so soon. It’s amazing, I’m over the moon.” Australia, the world’s top-ranked team, will play three T20Is against India, which have been scheduled as double-headers to correspond with the Australian men’s T20Is, also against India. Stalenberg believes an outstanding WBBL campaign with the table topping Sydney Thunder helped her secure a place in the national team. “I’ve got some good opportunities in the Thunder team and we’ve had some really good wins, which would have helped,” she said.

Rugby League Taylor keen to earn new contract at Panthers NATHAN TAYLOR
s he enters the final year of his contract at the Panthers, tough Kiwi backrower Elijah Taylor says he’ll put it all on the line this season to secure a new deal. The 25-year-old former New Zealand international joined the Panthers in 2013 and will serve his third and final year of that contract when he runs out for the club in their 50th season. With the Panthers flush with backrowers, including rising stars Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey plus new recruit Trent Merrin, Taylor admits he’ll have to work extra hard to earn himself a few more years at the foot of the Mountains. “I would love to stick around, that would be really good,” he told the Weekender. “The competition among players has been really good for me, really refreshing, to keep me on my toes. Hopefully having those quality players around me will keep my standards high.” While Taylor revealed contract negotiations are yet to begin between he and the club, many people believed the former Warriors star could end up at Ivan Cleary’s next club – if and when he secures one. It’s no secret Taylor and the former
A
Panthers coach – who was sacked in the off-season – had a strong bond due to their time in Auckland together, with many suggesting a reunion in 2017 could be on the cards. Taylor interestingly admitted Cleary’s departure and the arrival of new coach Anthony Griffin didn’t affect him or the playing group for too long. “Oh probably for the first day it was [strange] but you’re a professional footy player, those things happen,” he said. “The boys have enjoyed the pre-season so far and we’re all getting along with Hook (Griffin) really well.” It could be an interesting year for Taylor in more ways than just organising his future beyond this season. With State of Origin star Trent Merrin’s arrival at the club plus the emergence of some very talented backrowers, it’s been widely tipped Taylor – a machine in defence – could find his way out of Penrith’s starting side and onto the interchange bench. Such a decision would be a huge gamble for Penrith, with Taylor averaging a teamleading 48.3 tackles per game in 2015. “I’m not too sure about positions to be honest because all the backrowers have been training in different positions,” Taylor said.

Creating a pathway to rugby success More opportunities for junior players is the key to save the battling Penrith Emus NATHAN TAYLOR
ugby union is fast becoming a great alternative for junior sport thanks to new junior rugby club, Penrith RSL. While rugby union may not have the same profile in the area as rugby league, soccer and netball, it is certainly on the rise. Debuting in 2014, the Penrith RSL Rugby Club will this year enter its third season in the Penrith District Junior Rugby Union competition. According to Club President, Adam Fletcher, Penrith RSL’s main focus is to provide pathways for rugby in the Penrith-Nepean region for boys and girls in the traditional 15-a-side format as well as Rugby 7s. “I started this club a few years ago as a succession plan to the senior club, Penrith Emus, because I wanted to see a pathway start,” he said. “When the club first started I wanted it to reflect that we were young and vibrant, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job with that.” Penrith RSL is the only club within the Penrith LGA, with other clubs in the district made up of teams from the Blue
R
Emus coach Jeremy Paul with junior player Rory Fletcher. Photo: Megan Dunn Mountains, Hawkesbury Valley, Rooty Hill and Campbelltown. The club is currently on the hunt for its latest batch of new recruits with training set to begin in mid-February. Competition is played on Saturdays for U6’s to U9’s while U10’s and above battle
it out on Sundays. Wednesday evenings are reserved for training at Nepean Rugby Park in Cranebrook. Mr Fletcher said rugby union has a huge range of benefits that will assist a child’s development both physically and mentally.
“For a boutique sport, I think rugby has a lot going for it,” he said. “Not only are there the obvious physical benefits but kids become better people because the values that the game espousers is second to none.” Rugby is often perceived as a ‘rich kids sport’, which in fact isn’t the case according to Mr Fletcher who says registrations are very competitive with other children’s sports. Another drawcard to rugby is the opportunity to play at a representative level. With rugby league representative teams becoming harder and harder to make for some kids, there may be a greater chance for teens to make representative squads if they choose rugby. “For the last two years we haven’t fielded teams in the U16, U17 or U18’s age groups at the State Championships, and we’d really like to,” Mr Fletcher said. “We’d love to see anyone interested in rugby, who hasn’t made rugby league representative teams before, to consider rugby because there’s a high chance of representative honours.” Registrations for the upcoming season with Penrith RSL are open shortly. CRICKET: The first day of Penrith’s Round 10 two day match against Fairfield-Liverpool was abandoned last Saturday due to wet fields. Both sides will return to Rosedale Oval this Saturday for day two of action. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Limited Overs side are through to the semi finals after defeating Blacktown in last weekend’s qualifying final. Blacktown batted first and finished on 8/274. When Penrith hit the crease later that afternoon they managed to reach their opponents total with 7/275. Penrith will now play Bankstown in this Sunday’s semi final. BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side will take on Macarthur this Sunday in Round 15 of the NSW State Baseball League. TENNIS: For anyone thinking about playing some tennis this year, the Nepean District Tennis Association will hold a free trial day this Saturday, January 23 to learn about various competitions and have some fun. Nepean Tennis has competitions to suit players of any age, standard or gender including singles, doubles and mixed. Competitions can be played on weekdays or weekends. The fun begins at 10am this Saturday at Woodriff Gardens Tennis Complex in Penrith. FOOTBALL: A late winner from Sydney FC’s Shane Smeltz has
consigned the Western Sydney Wanderers to yet another Sydney Derby defeat, going down 2-1 in front of a record breaking crowd at Pirtek Stadium. A drama-charged derby looked destined to finish all square after Dario Vidosic’s sublime strike just before the hour mark cancelled out Jacques Faty’s first-half header. But Smeltz had the final say, lashing home an unstoppable volley in the final minute to stretch the Sky Blues’ unbeaten streak in the derby to six matches. The win also draws Sydney FC level on 27 points with the Wanderers, who have now lost two in a row for the first time this season. The Wanderers will return to action this Saturday night when they take on Central Coast in Gosford. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have saved the best for last with a late win over Perth Glory to end their W-League season on a high and leapfrog Perth to finish seventh on the ladder. Despite the 2-0 score line, the Red and Black made it hard for themselves as Erica Halloway’s goal of the season contender and Hannah Beard’s impressive effort both came in the final four minutes of the match. Popondetta Park played host as both teams – who were out of finals contention – threw caution to the wind for an entertaining spectacle in front of 583 spectators.

the
ocal basketballer Ella Tofaeono almost gave it all away, that was until a serious knee injury changed her perspective on life and the game. The 17-year-old Penrith Panthers basketballer underwent major knee surgery last year and was forced to spend a number of months on the sideline contemplating her future in the game. Whilst in rehab Ella learnt to appreciate the game more which, in turn, saw her selected to represent NSW at the 2016 U20’s National Championships, to be held in Brisbane next month. “I think last year was a real eye opener and something I really needed, I really needed that break. In a weird way, I’m glad I got injured… because coming back I appreciate the game a lot more,” she told the Weekender. Ella said she always knew she had the skills and physical capabilities to be great but didn’t quite know how to unlock her potential until she got injured. “I’m one of these athletes who is naturally gifted but I don’t work hard enough and that’s something I realised after,” she said.
