GOLDEN HOUR Penrith’s hottest night out is on July 23, when a spectacular cabaret transforms the EVAN Theatre stage into a visual feast certain to turn heads and amaze the crowd. Cassidy Pearce reports on page 47
irst-term Penrith Councillor Jonathan Pullen confirmed this week that he has resigned from the Labor
Party. The Weekender has been aware of growing tensions involving Cr Pullen and Labor in recent weeks. During a Council meeting on Monday night, he confirmed he had quit the party. “I would like to make a statement that I have resigned from the Labor Party,” he said. “I still have nothing but the utmost reverence for my Labor colleagues and the Labor Party as a whole but I will be serving as an independent moving forward.” Cr Pullen was elected at last year’s Local Government Election. He was second on veteran Labor Councillor John Thain’s ticket. Cr Pullen would not discuss the reasons behind his decision when contacted by the Weekender. “I’m determined to continue diligently serving the Penrith community to best of my abilities moving forward,” he said. “I believe Penrith is the crown jewel of greater Sydney, and it’s always been my goal to help facilitate ambitious projects as we move into the future.” The change means there are now five independent Councillors and Labor has been left with only four Councillors across the three wards. The Liberal Party has six Councillors in total. “At this point in time, I’ve chosen to be an independent and I’ll always vote for what I believe to be in the best interests of the community,” Cr Pullen said. The Weekender contacted Cr Thain for comment, who said that Labor does not comment on internal party matters.
