A

n explosion and ‘flash fire’ at a smash repairs workshop in Dunheved last weekend has left a man with serious burns to his body.

Emergency services were called to the Dunheved factory unit on Links Road just after 3pm on Sunday, July 20 to find the fire, which had begun with an explosion, close to extinguished.

However, Fire and Rescue located a man with burns to a significant amount of his body.

Ambulance paramedics who were at the scene called on the CareFlight rapid-response trauma team shortly after 3.30pm, to assist in treating the man.

CareFlight landed on a vacant block 300 metres from the scene where the man was being treated.

“The CareFlight doctor said the man, believed to be aged in his 40s, suffered burns to his arms, legs and face when fumes ignited at a spray painting booth,” said Ian Badham, CareFlight spokesperson and founding director.

The man was stabilised at the scene and was flown by CareFlight to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remained in a serious but stable condition on arrival.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.

he historic Fernhill Estate is planning to hold its second Picnic Races event in October, but local residents are concerned about possible environmental impacts.

Last November, the sprawling Fernhill Estate held its inaugural Picnic Races event, attracting crowds of between 6,000 and 8,000.

Owners, the Tripp family, are now seeking Council permission to hold the event once a year for the next five years.

“We hope that the Picnic Races will become a fixture on the racing calendar... and provide something unique for Penrith, Mulgoa and greater western Sydney,” Brenda Tripp said.

But, with up to 10,000 people proposed to attend, Mulgoa residents are concerned.

“Say it quickly and the Picnic Races sound like a great idea, but view them in context of the environment and potential subdivision of the Eastern Precinct of Fernhill and issues quickly emerge,” explained President of the Mulgoa Progress Association, Peter Harvey.

“It is one event and people cannot be silly about this, but residents don’t support the event proposal in its current form.”

He said that last year, dust and damage by cars parked on the heritage listed property was a real concern.

“No-one can control the weather but I cannot see how Council could approve the races for five years without knowing any of the weather conditions,” Mr Harvey said.

“There was also litter left at Fernhill such as cigarette butts, which according to Clean Up Australia is the second most prevalent form of litter, and is very difficult to clean up.”

He said that ultimately residents want to see issues surrounding the proposed subdivision and development of the Eastern Precinct of Fernhill resolved before long term approval for events is given.

“You just don’t know how long the owners are going to be around. The focus should be on what is happening with the subdivision as we are expecting a development application shortly. Once that matter is sorted then Fernhill should look at events,” he said.

But Mrs Tripp said that the two matters are “completely unrelated”.

“The five year approval of the Picnic Races relates to our licence to hold a racing event. The licence was granted for six years and given that it will be the same event it makes sense not to tie up the

“Last year was the inaugural event and we are making two major improvements to deal with possible weather conditions.

“The event is proposed for three weeks

earlier to avoid any unseasonally hot, dry weather. We are also going to use shading structures and the lawns of the central precinct will be grassy and green as we have installed irrigation.”

The application is currently on exhibition at Penrith City Council’s website.

The State Government’s decision to stop funding suburban sporting grounds and focus on big stadiums, and the NRL’s desire to ultimately have teams playing out of key big venues rather than their traditional homes, has certainly got plenty of people talking in recent weeks.

Over the next three weeks, I’m going to look at the key three players in this debate: the fans, the corporate dollar and the politics.

The answer may well be a pineapple – because the pros and cons list is pretty evenly matched.

Let’s kick off with the fans...

Rugby league fans have every right to fight to keep the memories they grew up with alive. For most league fans, the tradition of going to venues like Penrith Stadium, Brookvale Oval, Campbelltown Stadium, Kogarah Oval and Leichhardt Oval are a big reason they fell in love with the game in the first place.

What the fans don’t understand is the huge financial difficulties clubs face in trying to make money while playing at these venues.

So, under the guise of playing at better facilities where there’s comfortable seats, easy parking and no hills, clubs will most likely fall into line and play matches at the big venues in the long term. We’ve already seen teams like the Tigers and Dragons move matches away from their traditional homes, while the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs play all of their home games out of ANZ Stadium.

I believe that the clubs, the NRL and the State Government believe that they’ll be able to weather the initial storm, and that fans will eventually follow their club to ANZ or another big venue, but here’s the problem – I don’t think they will. People will be able to pull out statistics and figures that back up the argument that fans will follow their team anywhere, but we really do need to look at the long term picture and question if fans will actually cop it on the chin.

Fans love these venues because it’s home

Firstly, I’m here to tell you that the vast majority of fans couldn’t care less about having to sit on the hill at Leichhardt or Brookvale, or how crappy the toilet they use once or twice during their visit to such venues may be.

They don’t even care about how hard it is to get a parking spot, or the 15 minutes they have to wait to buy a pie. Fans love these venues because it’s home. They love these venues because it is where memories have been made and where they first fell in love with their team. Such feelings are hard to replicate elsewhere.

Fans don’t go to the footy for two key reasons – cost and convenience.

Now I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but using Penrith as an example, is anyone going to tell me it’s going to cost less to see a match at ANZ Stadium versus Penrith Stadium? Is anyone going to tell me it’s more convenient for me to get to Homebush, than Penrith? In fact, by the time I pay for parking, I’m guessing a day at the footy will cost me more. So where’s the benefit for what is very much a “what’s in it for me” society?

Rugby league needs to be very careful about shutting out the next generation of fans, by placing its matches in venues that parents simply won’t let their teenagers go to alone given the distance, and that adults couldn’t be bothered with because of the cost and inconvenience.

You only have to look at Sunday’s crowd for the game between the Tigers and Bulldogs to realise the problems that could emerge with the big stadium strategy in the long term.

The Tigers took this match to ANZ, the home ground of the Bulldogs. A special promotion meant there was free tickets available to any NRL club member, or anyone who had purchased a ticket to another game that weekend. The crowd?

A re-think, or at least a compromise, may be needed to get the fans on side.

Damian Sexton of Elders Real Estate Agents in Penrith is one of them. “We were contacted by the NBN or a service provider over a month ago and an appointment was made to talk about

switching to the NBN but the representative never showed up,� he said. “I imagine that the NBN Co and telcos will step up their campaigns as we get closer to the switch off date.�

A spokesperson for the NBN Co said that provided a business has placed an order for NBN services, existing services will not be switched off even if installation is due to take place after the cut off date.

he NBN Co is urging businesses to connect to the National Broadband Network as the deadline looms for the disconnection of some Penrith streets from traditional services. “The NBN is replacing most existing landline phone, ADSL Internet and Telstra cable Internet services in the region which will be switched off progressively in the region,� said NBN Co spokesperson, Darren Rudd.

Some premises along High Street, Woodriff Street, Station Street and Castlereagh Street will be switched off on December 31. “We are encouraging home and business owners who are eligible to connect but have not placed an order for services over the NBN to contact their preferred Internet service provider or phone company to discuss the steps required to make the switch,� Mr Rudd said.

Sweeping changes likely Productivity Commission report welcomed with caution by local operators @cassandra_o

T

he much awaited Productivity Commission into childcare and early childhood learning released its draft report this week, recommending a raft of changes to make childcare more affordable for low income families.

The full findings of the Commission will be published in October after public consultation, however, one of the key changes proposed is streamlining childcare subsidies into one payment that would be means tested.

“Our recommendations seek to make childcare more affordable, flexible and accessible. Furthermore they will provide a framework for a more financially sustainable childcare system for taxpayers into the future,” Presiding Commissioner Dr Wendy Craik said.

“Means testing the childcare rebate will mean that more families on very low incomes will pay less for their childcare than they do now. We expect low income families would see around 90 per cent of their reasonable childcare fees paid by Government.”

The recommendations for means testing a single childcare rebate would still see all

The Commission also says that nannies

should be eligible for childcare subsidies subject to their attainment of appropriate qualifications and that the Federal Government should remove restrictions

on the hours that centres have to be open in order to receive Government subsidies.

“The Productivity Commission supports retaining the National Quality Framework and extending it to other subsidised services but it needs to be more flexible and targeted for the types of services provided,” Dr Craik added.

Owner of Spunky Monkeys Early Learning Centres, Kareena Gale said that some of the recommendations will certainly benefit local childcare providers.

“Having the childcare payment paid directly to the service will make a big difference,” she said.

“Sometimes parents will have payments owing and then leave the service or spend the childcare benefits on things other than childcare, so this measure would ensure that money is being spent on their child.”

But Ms Gale is cautious of the proposal that parents must be actively seeking employment or studying for at least 24 hours per fortnight to qualify for childcare benefits.

“We don’t want a situation to arise where children have had no early childhood education when they reach kindergarten because the parents did not fulfil the work requirements,” she said.

“The social benefits of having the child educated are far greater.”

Police snapshot Penrith: Man charged with shoplifting offences

An alleged member of an outlaw motorcycle gang has been charged after he was caught speeding in Cambridge Park. Police investigators from Strike Force Raptor commenced a pursuit of a speeding motorbike at around 12.30am on Saturday, July 19. They allegedly observed the bike travelling at a high speed westbound on Victoria Street, Cambridge Park. They clocked the bike’s travelling speed at 119km/h in a 50km/h zone and stopped the rider after a short pursuit. The rider, a 24-year-old member of the Gypsy Jokers OMCG, was issued infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and not wearing an approved helmet. His licence was confiscated and suspended for six months.

A 32-year-old from Rockdale has been charged with shoplifting after he stole products from a local shop and attempted to steal more from another. At about 3pm on Saturday, July 19, the man allegedly entered a hair products store in a local shopping centre. He selected a large amount of products and left the store without paying for them, returning them to his vehicle. He then went to a department store in the same shopping centre and selected a number of items before attempting to leave without paying for them. He was stopped by security on duty at the time, who called local police officers. He was arrested and charged over the shoplifting. He will appear at Penrith Local Court on September 9 over the incidents.

A 14-year-old has allegedly been found in the possession of cannabis, after police searched a number of youth in Glenmore Park last week. At about 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 16, police attended the car park of Floribunda Community Centre in Glenmore Park. There they found a ute with a number of young people inside. Police searched the boys, finding an amount of cannabis in the possession of a 14-year-old Glenmore Park boy. The boy was escorted home by police and will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act. Police will continue to monitor the car park and other areas to stamp out such behaviour.

Police are calling on the public to be wary of scammers after a number of suspicious phone calls have been made to people in the area. When local residents receive the scam call, there is a man on the other end who identifies himself as an employee of ‘Quantum PC Support’ before informing the home owner that their computer is broken.

He then offers to fix the computer and requests that the person hand over their bank details and personal information. This is a scam. If you receive any similar calls, contact your local police. Do not hand over any personal information to anyone over the phone unless you are sure it’s not a scam.

indsay MP Fiona Scott says the repeal of the carbon tax last week will benefit local families and small businesses.

Removing the tax was the single largest promise made by the Federal Liberal Party when in Opposition and that promise was finally delivered upon last Thursday when the repeal legislation passed the Senate.

“Scrapping the carbon tax will save the average household around $550 a year, including around $200 on the average household electricity bill and around $70 on the average gas bill. This will reduce cost of living pressures for all Australians,” Ms Scott said.

“The Government’s consumer watchdog, the ACCC, has been given extra funding and powers to ensure that savings are passed on to consumers.

“Scrapping the carbon tax will also take a cost burden off local businesses. This will make it easier for them to compete and employ more people.

“I’ve listened to many local residents concerned about how this unfair tax has imposed a real burden on their small businesses and their family.”

Ms Scott admitted that getting the legislation through parliament has not been

easy, with leader of the Palmer United Party, Clive Palmer, delaying the legislation’s passage.

“It may have taken time and there were obstacles along the way, but we’ve done this together,” Ms Scott said.

Labor Spokesperson for Lindsay, John Thain says the Government’s claim that families will be $550 better off without the carbon tax is “wishful thinking”.

“I challenge families in Lindsay to hold Tony Abbott to this promise,” he said.

“I feel the electorate is in for another disappointment of broken promises. Any economic benefits that are passed onto the electorate will be swallowed up by the GP co-payment and the fuel levy, not to mention other budget initiatives that will leave middle and low income earners worse off than under Labor.”

Cr Thain believes that the repeal of the carbon tax is out of step with international views on climate change.

“Fossil fuels are finite and Australia should be encouraging investment into renewable energy,” he said.

“The repeal of the carbon tax sends the wrong message to international investors in renewable energy projects; we have already seen Lockheed Martin withdraw a $230 million investment deal into ocean wave energy since the carbon tax was repealed.”

Forum to discuss new airport Western Sydney’s economic potential to be realised thanks to Badgerys Creek

he University of Western Sydney will host a forum on the Badgerys Creek Airport to discuss the benefits it might bring to the greater western Sydney region.

Engineers from the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics at UWS in cooperation with the Western Sydney Branch of Engineers Australia have organised the forum for early next month.

Guest speakers will include Minister Assisting the Premier on Western Sydney and Member of Parliament for Penrith Stuart Ayres; Dr Andy Marks, Associate Director Community and Government Relations at the University of Western Sydney; and John Sleeman from Engineers Australia.

“The development and location of the airport at Badgerys Creek will create new high technology industries within and around the local community,” said Chairman of the forum, Dr Ragbir Bhathal, from the UWS School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics.

“It will provide exciting jobs for both engineers and scientists whilst hopefully influencing the number of students

choosing to study science. The airport will redress the shortage of scientists, technicians and engineers within the region, which has affected its growth towards becoming a technological powerhouse for New South Wales.”

“Building an airport at Badgerys Creek is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to truly realise western Sydney’s socioeconomic potential,” he said.

“Importantly, it’s also about enabling this region to play a leading part in the broader development of Sydney as a whole into a truly globally integrated city.

“As the University for the Region, we are well positioned to bring our existing expertise to the design, construction and management of the airport’s start-up phases.”

The forum will take place on Wednesday, August 6 at the Werrington South Campus and will commence at 6.30pm.

Council tackles smokey problem

Western Sydney councils are joining forces to tackle wood smoke pollution.

The Western Sydney Wood Smoke Project, run by the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), aims to make residents more aware of the proper operation of their wood heaters which will ultimately save money, reduce nuisance smoke and improve regional air quality.

chimneys could be a real problem during winter months.

He asked residents with wood heaters to check their chimneys for excessive smoke on a regular basis.

“Unfortunately wood smoke pollution can harm the environment and your health and can be upsetting for neighbours,” Cr Fowler said.

“Ideally, chimneys should not vent any smoke, just a heat haze.”

illage Fair Glenmore Park has lodged its plans for the expansion for Glenmore Park Town Centre – and it is all worth a staggering $25 million.

In 2012, a planning permit was given for the shopping centre’s expansion however the new plans show a substantially lesser development. Glenmore Park Shopping Centre currently provides a range of specialty stores and access to a Woolworths supermarket.

The extension will provide an additional

8,600 square metres of retail space, to be located on the vacant block frequently used as a car park for the sports fields.

The second stage of the Glenmore Park Shops will include a Coles supermarket, Aldi supermarket, specialty shops and commercial space.

There will also be a two-storey car park with 388 spaces. Cardno, who completed the traffic impact assessment of the development said that car parking demands generated by Ched Towns Reserve have been incorporated in the plans.

“Whilst not necessarily the responsibility of the applicant or the proposed shopping centre expansion, it is considered

that a holistic view and assessment of the future parking demands in the area would be warranted to ensure that the proposed parking provisions will adequately cater for the demands associated with the existing shopping centre, the expansion to the shopping centre, and also the existing use of the sporting and community uses in the area,” Cardno said.

Village Fair say there would be substantial benefits from the local shopping centre’s expansion.

“Under a ‘do-nothing’ scenario, the Glenmore Park Town Centre is expected to achieve sales of about $89.5 million in the year 2016/17. The proposed expanded

centre, including two new supermarkets, is estimated to achieve potential sales of $140.1 million in 2016/17, equating to a sales uplift of about $50.7 million,” Village Fair said in their economic assessment.

“The proposed expansion of the town centre is estimated to cost approximately $25 million. Based on these costs, we estimate that 278 construction jobs per year will be created during the construction of the retail component of the centre, including 107 created directly.”

In principal approval is also being sought for a 74 unit apartment development, which would proceed upon completion of the shopping centre.

he NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been slammed for its poor management of contaminated sites.

In a report on the operations of the EPA, NSW Auditor-General Grant Hehir criticised the lack of timely assessment of potentially contaminated sites, lack of accessible information available to the public, and management processes for contaminated sites.

According to the report, at May of this year, a total of 1,586 sites with possible contamination had been formally notified to the EPA.

The majority of these sites are current and former service stations. Other sites include metal industries, gasworks, chemical industries and landfill sites.

In Penrith alone, there are some 22 sites that are currently being investigated by the EPA for possible contamination, the majority being petrol stations.

A further three local sites have current EPA notices for clean up, and another nine sites are regulated by the EPA even though there are no current licences for the sites.

The report found that when sites are reported to the EPA, there is no systematic process for prioritising their assessment and there is currently a backlog of almost 800 sites awaiting assessment.

Almost three years on and only eight of those sites have been progressed, with 12 still awaiting information for the EPA to make an initial assessment.

Just some of those delayed sites include the Caltex service station at Cambridge Park, the Kemps Creek Caltex service station, the former petrol depot on Coreen Avenue in Penrith, and the St Clair Mobil service station.

“The EPA should implement a streamlined process for prioritising and assessing sites, with clear rules around whether a significantly contaminated site should be declared,” the Auditor-General said.

“The EPA should implement a combined database to better monitor regulated sites and improve public reporting, and provide better guidance to staff on when to escalate regulatory activities.”

In response to the findings, EPA CEO and Chair, Barry Buffier said that the EPA, “will continue to prioritise and focus on the sites with the greatest potential for environmental harm”.

“The current EPA project to integrate existing contaminated site databases will provide the opportunity for improved management tracking of regulated sites and even greater transparency for the community on industry performance in meeting key milestones for site remediation.”

Man charged over Penrith assault A man has been seriously injured as a result of an assault incident last weekend.

Between 8.30pm and 9pm on Friday, July 19, a 34-year-old male was hit in the face with an object during an incident in

Illawong Avenue, Penrith. He sustained serious facial injuries.

Police from Penrith Local Area Command have charged a 27-year-old male over the incident.

hoppers at Westfield Penrith helped to make this GiveAbility Day the company’s biggest yet, contributing to raise a total of $213, 676 in donations for charity.

39 Westfield centres across the country took part in the annual fundraising day, held on Saturday, July 5, with each centre raising money for a local organisation of their choice.

The numbers have finally been counted, demonstrating the generosity of Penrith’s shoppers.

“GiveAbility Day at Westfield Penrith was a great success. We saw hundreds of local shoppers make generous donations and through Westfield’s dollar-matching initiative, we raised a total of $8,788 to support our charity partner, Barnardos,” said Paul Stonebridge, centre manager, Westfield Penrith.

With the company matching the donations made, an extra $250,000 was split between charities across the country.

There were over 30 charities to benefit from the fundraising day.

“The success of GiveAbility Day is a testament to the strong community spirit of our shoppers. The funds raised will contribute to programs supporting fami-

lies of children with disabilities including cerebral palsy, developmental delays and autism,” said Winnie Cheng, Westfield National Community Manager.

“Through the generous support of our shoppers we raised 19 per cent more than last year, and we look forward to building on this in 2015.”

Local shoppers are still able to make a donation by visiting the concierge desks at Westfield Penrith.

With Lifeline’s Stress Down Day being held today (Friday, July 25), the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is reminding people how important pets are in keeping us healthy and happy.

AVA spokesperson Dr David Neck said that pets provide the perfect de-stress solution.

ocal resident Karen Fraser is probably the luckiest shopper in town after she won Penrith Homemaker Centre’s major holiday competition last week.

Just for shopping at the Mulgoa Road shopping precinct, Ms Fraser won the grand prize of a family trip to Disneyland worth $15,000.

During the event, five major prizes were won by lucky shoppers including four travel vouchers to the value of $6,000 each from Hello World Travel as well as the coveted Disneyland trip of a lifetime.

The grand prize was drawn by James Scott, General Manager Property for Harvey Norman.

Mr Scott, who has had a long association with the property, said he was proud to once again draw the winning entry, and thanked local people for their support.

Tragedy that we will never forget The Governor-General, the Presiding Officers of the Parliament, members of the Cabinet, representatives of the Federal Opposition, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and members of the public [have] signed the Commonwealth of Australia Condolence Book in support and sympathy to the families of those tragically killed on Flight MH17.

All Australians mourn the loss of Flight MH17. There were 298

people on this aircraft – and their deaths offend our sense of justice.

We grieve for all, but particularly for the 37 men, women and children who called Australia home.

Our hearts go out to all their families. We will support them through the difficult times ahead.

In coming weeks, Australians will stand with the families, friends, neighbours and colleagues who have lost people they cherish.

Twenty three million Australians share the sadness of those who mourn. We are united in grief and in our determination to ensure that justice is done. After today’s signing, the Condolence Book will be made available to all who wish to record their condolences to the families and loved ones of those lost on MH17. In time, a copy of the Condolence Book will be provided to each of the Australian families. Condolence books will also be placed in Australia’s Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Penrith City Council will continue to investigate the merits of a City Park after a report was tabled at its Policy Review Committee Meeting.

Penrith Progression has been actively engaging the community through its workshops, seminars, forums and online development of ideas that explore and test how to transform the city centre into a better place to live, work and invest. Participants in the many forums and focus groups have raised the need for a local gathering space and a place for connection with other people and the environment.

“As Penrith’s city centre grows and we plan for a vibrant, economically robust regional city that will accommodate 12,000 new jobs and 10,000 new residents, our research and community consultation through Penrith Progression is pointing to the need for a civic heart,” said Mayor Ross Fowler.

A review will be undertaken in the coming months to confirm what the park’s role could be in the future and how it could help shape the urban form of the city by acting as a catalyst for investment. The review will help to define how big the City Park should be according to the range and scale of uses, taking into account anticipated future growth of the City Centre.

Park, Cranebrook (two), and Jamisontown as part of Council’s forward works programs. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said kids deserved the best play equipment Council could provide and that Council’s programs had seen nine playgrounds replaced in the past year alone.

Council has received an application to turn 4-5 Production Place, into a place of worship. The site is occupied by an existing large, single industrial building that was previously used as a training warehouse and distribution centre for Tony Ferguson. Proposed works will include the construction of separated areas including an auditorium, storage, and multi-purpose rooms for small break out meetings, office space and amenities for Empower Church.

Kingswood continues to be a hot spot for medium density development. Council is in receipt of a development application for 92-94 Great Western Highway, Kingswood.

The development proposal involves the demolition of the existing dwellings and structures on the site and the construction of a total of 10 twostorey, four-bedroom townhouses.

A number of ancillary elements are incorporated into the proposal including the construction of garages and landscape works.

Tristan’s unlikely passion

A 15-year-old not interested in television or video games? We’ve found him!

ristan Muralitharan is a local teenager with an unlikely passion for everything orchids, a passion that he hopes to one day turn into

a career.

There are few people as young as the 15-year-old Penrith Anglican College student that have a passion so deeply for a plant species but Tristan’s has breathed life into the Blue Mountains and Penrith District Orchid Society.

The local student first developed an interest in orchids at 12-years-old, when he joined the society as the youngest member of an ageing community.

“I was going overseas for a music tour and I began selling orchids to fundraise.

I actually started getting into breeding them and growing them seriously. I got in touch with Alan Merriman from the Orchid Society and it all stemmed from there,” he said.

“I went and did a tissue culture course at Kevin Western’s [an orchid growing laboratory in South Australia]. I started having a look at the actual parentage of plants and how complex and interesting they are.

And as a history buff, having a look at the history of the plants got me interested as well.”

Tristan was awarded the Junior Championship at the Orchid Society’s recent Winter Show, scooping up seven first place awards and five second place prizes.

Alan Merriman, patron of the local Orchid Society, has been mentoring Tristan, teaching him everything there is to know about cultivating the beautiful species.

interest in something instead of that black box [television]. Tristan is so keen.

It is great in the fact that I know that I am passing on what I know because when I go to heaven there are not many people who will be able to carry all this information on,” Mr Merriman said.

“You get some [young people] that will come along to a meeting but only because their parents drag them along. We try very hard to teach them – sometimes they come to us to learn – but they usually flit off to their computers.”

After years working with orchids, having made a living from cultivating and exporting them, Mr Merriman is able to put Tristan in touch with orchid growers around the globe.

“Little Tristan, he’s going to be a great orchid grower as time goes on,” he said.

“It would be great to have some younger people join the society. The community is ageing.”

Tristan is currently learning the ins-andouts of orchid parentage and is passionate about pursuing a career in orchid conservation after he completes his schooling.

“There are some species that are really doing it tough, some hardly even exist in the wild anymore. I want to stop that and raise awareness as well,” he said.

“I want to help put some of them back into the wild.”

He has over 600 of his own plants.

To fuel his passion for the species, Tristan attends free lessons with a group of other enthusiasts who are taught by Mr Merriman on a weekly basis.

In addition to this, he meets with the Orchid Society on a monthly basis.

Keep NSW Beautiful runs the Sustainable Cities Awards to recognise outstanding achievements for the environment in urban communities.

The Green Bin Bloke, and his Do The Right Bin Team, is a Council project to educate residents about what types of waste belongs in different bins.

Chief Executive Officer of Keep NSW Beautiful, David Imrie, was full of praise for Penrith City Council.

“Penrith City Council is an example of the kind of innovative enterprise that will drive sustainability in NSW communities now and into the future,” he said.

Located in the Penrith Panthers Leagues Club foyer, the new Interactive Museum comprises of four dedicated interactive displays celebrating ‘Our Greatest’, ‘Our Club’, ‘Our Juniors’ and ‘Our Scrapbook’.

The ‘hands-on’ museum allows visitors the opportunity to stroll down memory lane, evoking wonderful reflections of the development of the Panthers club and its heroes.

Panthers boss and club legend in his own right, Phil Gould, said the Interactive Museum was the latest phase in the lead-up to the club’s 50 year anniversary in 2017.

“Everything we’ve done here at Panthers in the last couple of years has been about respecting the past and creating the future. There’s a lot of history behind this club now and it needs to be celebrated,” Gould told the Weekender.

“Smoking is a habitual behaviour. Many people think that it is the nicotine that keeps them smoking, yet when they replace the nicotine (with patches for example), they still want to smoke. And even if they do manage to cut down, it is usually a temporary solution,” Mrs O’Connell said.

“It is the unconscious triggers and patterns that keep people smoking. In hypnosis, we can break through those processes, replacing them with suggestions for new, healthy habits. Essentially, it’s like removing an old program or behaviour that is no longer serving any worthwhile purpose.

“Smokers have gone from two packs a day to zero, with no withdrawals, after just one session.”

Tom Konidis turned to hypnotherapy eight months ago for assistance with quitting smoking and has since lost 15 kilograms as a result.

“I feel great. I am fitter, healthier, richer and happier. Quitting with Leonie gave me an incredible boost in motivation. I had tried everything else and failed. I am just so grateful that I did this,” he said.

hough many people struggle for years to give up smoking, trying all the latest medications and substitutes, according to local hypnotherapist, Leonie O’Connell, the secret is in the mind.

With an apparent 96 per cent success rate, hypnotherapy is becoming the new go-to treatment for people who are keen to give their bad habits the boot.

“Hypnosis is a very natural and familiar state. It’s like meditation or daydreaming – or that soft floaty feeling you experience just before you doze off into a peaceful sleep. It is the safest, most natural way possible to eliminate unwanted habits, fears, phobias and many other things from your life,” Mrs O’Connell said.

“The client is in control the entire time and chooses whether or not to accept the suggestions being made by the hypnotherapist. For that reason, it is extremely important that the client wants to make the change.”

While hypnotherapy is commonly used for weight loss and the treatment of phobias, new advances in the craft have provided smokers with a better chance of quitting for good.

he University of Western Sydney has bestowed the Dean’s Award on one local student who has been focused on finding ways to treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Georgie Conyngham was recently awarded the Dean’s Medal from the School of Humanities and Communication Arts. The criterion for this award was highly competitive and Mr Conyngham was awarded this recognition for being in the top two per cent of the completing School students.

His research focused on how the brain can be maintained through various activities.

“Prior to my studies I had developed a course that helps people maintain their brain heath through various stimulating activities,” he said.

“Through my research I looked at these different ways and the impact it has on our brain health.

“I want to be able to reach more people with my course so I am hoping there might be interested businesses or organisations who would be interested in partnering.”

t wasn’t the usual date for Christmas, nor was there snow, but the festive spirit shone brightly at Emmaus Catholic College during the last week of Term 2.

In what is now a well-established tradition, the College hosted a Christmas luncheon for the residents of nearby Emmaus Retirement Village.

Hard working, senior hospitality students at the College, under the direction of teacher Mrs Grills, prepared and presented Christmas fare in a beautifully decorated dining area, which had been transformed from a staff common room.

“I’ve been here for three of these lunches,” commented one visitor.

“It gets better every year, though the atmosphere is the same.”

The red and white themed tables, printed menus, candle decoration and tinsel complemented the Christmas meal.

“I had heard about it before I came here as Principal but actually being here demonstrates the commitment and pleasure I see in the attitude of the students as they contribute to our wider society,” said Dr Brad Campbell, Principal of Emmaus College, who attended for the first time.

Are you being too ‘safe’ in your business?

How to best handle a performance review

“A ship in a harbour is safe – but that is not what ships are built for.” This quote by John A. Shedd is so interesting for women in business. Most of us spend a great deal of time in our personal lives protecting and keeping safe those around us. So sometimes our instinct in business can be the same: to avoid risk and keep our business ‘safe’.

Occupational and hazardous risks aside, taking risk and moving outside the ‘safe zone’ is something that every highly successful business has done. Read the biographies of any entrepreneur or industry leader, such as Richard Branson or Steve Jobs, and you will see numerous examples of pushing themselves and their companies into ‘risky’ situations.

This is not to say that all their risks paid off: in fact many of them didn’t! And I am also not suggesting that we all need to follow the extreme examples of Branson and Co in our own businesses.

But as this quote suggests, as a business owner, you have a particular set of skills.

You likely started your business because you dared to dream that you could be a success. If you are being ‘safe’ are you

doing what you were built to do?

So I am challenging you to re-capture those big dreams! Ask yourself: • What needs to change?

• How can I do business better?

• How can I exceed the expectations of my customers?

• What can I do to create a truly unique experience for people who come into contact with my business?

• What calculated risks can I take?

• How can I generate passion and excitement amongst my staff to help me achieve my goals?

Are you prepared to try and fail rather than wonder what might have been?

It is a constant battle for business owners to encourage their staff to be proactive and constantly improving at work. It’s the old saying of being too consumed in the day to day operations rather than taking time to look at performance and progress of individual staff.

Constant reviews of staff performance are critical for employers that want to grow their business. Appraising performance is great for both sides. It allows the employer to give constructive feedback and gives the employee an opportunity to get feedback on their performance and voice any opinions of their own.

Performance appraisals should be used to communicate how well an employee’s performance meets the needs and demands of his or her role within the business. It is also a vital communication vehicle.

Approaching performance review discussions positively and productively is an important step in building your team’s confidence in the process.

Be prepared: Ensure that you are well prepared for performance appraisal by considering the employee’s past

performance appraisals, training records and other objective evidence of performance (e.g. attendance records, billings, customer feedback). If necessary, obtain feedback from other colleagues. The employee should also be given adequate time to complete a self-assessment of their own performance.

You should be prepared to answer any questions that the employee could potentially ask, and be ready to discuss remuneration and career progression.

Open positively: Acknowledge the strengths and contributions of team members early in the discussion. Crediting their efforts will let them know they’re valued, make them more receptive to constructive feedback, and help them enter the conversation comfortably.

Never ambush the employee: The performance appraisal should not be viewed as an isolated event at which an employee is given feedback about their performance, particularly if the feedback is negative.

Maintain a balance: Both the positive and negative aspects of the employee’s performance should be discussed.

Toyota has announced an impressive sales milestone for the Land Cruiser wagon in Australia while releasing a value-laden ‘Altitude’ special-edition model that offers more than $5,000 of added luxury, comfort, safety and convenience.

Mr Eggins added the success of the tournament is often translated back at the school playground during lunch time.

“During summer in Terms 1 and 4, there’s lots of games of cricket going on in the playground,” he said.

“Kids come back to school, after seeing how fun it is, wanting to be the next Glenn McGrath.”

Due to the success of the day, Mr Lees was hopeful more kids will join a local cricket club.

“We often get a good response after an event like this. We distribute information about different clubs in the local area as well as different programs we are running, and we often get a lot of new children.”

t may be the middle of winter but more than 200 kids from seven different Penrith primary schools tried their hand at cricket on Monday as part of the Milo T20 Blast Tournament.

The popular tournament, which is designed to encourage kids to play more cricket, saw Year 5 and 6 students from multiple local schools face off against each other.

“They play four games across the day, there’s no final, they just go out there and have a good time,” said Jonathan Lees, Senior Development Officer of Cricket NSW Sydney Outer-West Region.

“It’s participation-based, so every kid can have a go even if they’re not the best cricketers. It’s just about getting as many kids as possible playing cricket.”

Ben Eggins, Year 6 teacher at York Public School, said his school often competes in the Milo T20 Blast Tournament.

“It’s something we participate in regularly. It’s good fun for the kids, it keeps them active and involved in cricket,” he said.

KINGSWOOD MINOR Singles played recently with Bryan Wilkinson winning 31-19 over Rolf Laib. Bryan is a relatively new bowler and this was his first effort in a Final. The game was played in trying conditions with Bryan adapting the better.

The Brose Maiden Shield was played at Penrith and the winners were Steve Harvey, Noel Selby and Mick Stonham with the three Peters namely Toby, Barry and Paul Peters the runners up. Kyle Breese, Jordan Peisley and Shane Clarke took out third place.

Trent Whittingham (Penrith) tried very hard to defeat the talented Gerard Beath (Cowra) but just fell short at the end in the Zone 5 Singles Championship. Col Missen (Camden) was victorious over Brian Crean

(Lawson) in the Senior Singles and Terry Reid (Lawson) defeated Rob Luland (Portland) by a shot in the Reserve Singles.

The winners of the Blacktown City Triples were Robert Burr, Wayne Moore and Mat Slager defeating Grant Murphy, Gary Nathan and David Roberts.

Paul Luke and Brad Johnson teamed up to play Mick Pope and Eddy Rijk in the final of the St Marys RSL Minor Pairs. Paul and Brad dropped an 8 on the 3rd end but to their credit fought back picking up a 5 on the 10th end to lead 13-11. However, they then dropped two 5’s on the next two ends.

To their credit they tried to come back again but ran out of ends and eventually lost by 3 shots 29-26. Even the last end they needed a 6 to draw and nearly did so.

Race one was won by the second favourite The Black Assassin driven by KerryAnn Turner at the nice odds of $5.60.

Race three proved to be a tight and compact field leading into the back straight when favourite Bee Tees NZ driven by Blake Fitzpatrick burst through and took the lead in a thrilling finish, but the fast finishing Rock Post Scissors claimed victory right on the line to win at the odds of $5.90.

Race five proved to be the race of the night with a wall of horses across the winning line. Present for Pa, who is racing very well at the moment, is certainly one to follow and won by a nose driven by Todd McCarthy at big odds of $15.30.

Race six proved to be the longest odds of the night with the winner paying 25 to one.

fter a few disappointing seasons since being admitted into the W-League in 2012, the Western Sydney Wanderers are hoping a new head coach will do them the world of good as the 2014/15 season closes in.

Last week the Wanderers announced W-League assistant coach, Norm Boardman, as the team’s new mentor.

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the appointment of Boardman is testament

to Western Sydney’s commitment to women’s football and the W-League.

“To have a coach of the calibre of Norm Boardman in charge of our Westfield W-League squad will bring a new level of performance and development to our team – one that sits within our overarching culture and philosophy,” he said.

Boardman said he was excited to take the reins: “We aim to play a successful and entertaining brand that will make us highly competitive while at the same time inspiring girls throughout our region to take up football”.

ust weeks after becoming a Sydney King, Penrith basketball sensation Angus Brandt could very soon be joining new NBA star Dante Exum and recent NBA champion Aron Baynes in Spain for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Last week the 24-year-old local was selected in the Australian Boomers 17-man preliminary squad for the upcoming international tournament in August.

Brandt travelled to Canberra this week for a training camp where the 17-man squad will be whittled down to a final 12.

Along with Exum and Baynes, Brandt will be joined by other Aussie NBA players including Cleveland’s Matthew Dellavedova and Chicago’s Cameron Bairstow as well some of Australia’s best European League players.

Australian head coach Andrej Lemanis said Brandt’s recent stint with the Boomers at the Sino-Australia Challenge in China proved he had something to offer the national team.

“Every year the Sino Challenge series produces some good news stories and is a great opportunity for players to

“Angus showed he has some skills to offer in the Boomer environment that is deserving of an opportunity at the next camp.”

Brandt will know his fate by Tuesday where the coaching staff will name the final 12-man team.

The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held in Spain from August 30 to September 15.

Impairment can’t stop Craig

ou may not think playing golf with a severe hearing impairment would impact your game too much. Besides you still have your sight, so why is hearing so important out on the course?

49-year-old Glenmore Park golfer Craig Douglas, who was born profoundly deaf with 96 per cent hearing loss, explains why.

“Given I know nothing different, it is normal for me but I find I rely heavily on how a hit feels rather than being able to hear how a hit sounds,” he explained.

“At a recent competition in Pymble, their pennant team played nine holes with ear muffs on and found it incredibly different and realised just how much they relied on their hearing to play a game that you wouldn’t necessarily think you’d need your sense of hearing for a great deal.”

Mr Douglas, who has been playing golf for 27 years, discovered his passion for the green after finding some old golf clubs when moving house.

He soon joined the NSW Deaf Golf

Glenmore Park resident Craig Douglas loves the sport of golf Association where he developed his craft to go on to become one of Australia’s best hearing impaired golfers.

Mr Douglas has represented Australia on

six occasions at deaf golf events around the world, most recently playing in the World Deaf Golf Championships in Michigan, USA.

“It was great to catch up with people I hadn’t seen since the last Championships,” Mr Douglas said.

“Although it was the hardest course I’d ever played at, it’s always a great experience to play in different countries and have a chance to practice my signing in other languages.

“It makes me very proud to be part of something so unique. It’s a great privilege to represent Australia’s deaf community internationally in a sport that I love.”

The Wallacia Golf Club member of 18 years said he highly recommends golf to anyone with a hearing impairment as it’s a great way to form friendships with people experiencing the same day to day challenges as you.

“It provides a great medium to form close friendships,” he said.

“I’ve met the majority of my closest and oldest friends through playing golf with the NSW Deaf Golf Association.”

Up next for Mr Douglas is the National Deaf Golf Championship on the Gold Coast in April.

The tournament will act as a qualifier for the World Deaf Golf Championships in Denmark in 2016.

Now the popular coach wants to finish the 2014 season on a high when they meet cross-town rivals Parramatta at Nepean Rugby Park at 3pm this Saturday.

“We’ve got nothing to lose. I said to the boys if we can pull off these next two wins then we’ll go into 2015 on a high, and that’s what we’re planning to do.”

Last week, Tu’ipulotu made the bold statement of declaring the Emus finals contenders in 2015.

He may just be onto something.

nly a brave person would’ve tipped the Penrith Emus to win two games this season but they’ve done just that and are planning to close out the year with win number three this Saturday.

After knocking off Northern Suburbs for their first win in two seasons back in early June, the Emus defeated a desperate West Harbour Pirates outfit 38-36 last Saturday afternoon in front of hundreds of dedicated fans at Nepean Rugby Park.

Speaking with the Weekender, Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said last weekend’s come from behind two-point victory was even better than their first win of the year against Norths on June 7.

“It was much better because we had a few injuries, we didn’t have our number one team playing, and the guys’ courage and determination was unbelievable,” he said.

After falling behind 12-0 early in the game, the Emus got their attack together to score level with the Pirates at the halftime break.

With West Harbour desperate and determined to book a place in the Shute Shield finals they continued to pile on the points into the second half.

However, the Emus wouldn’t go away, keeping up with their opposition right to very end. With two minutes to go and down by three points, the Emus scored a

orean baseball sensation DaeSung Koo has played with some of the world’s most famous baseball clubs; he’s pitched at some of the game’s most iconic venues; and he’s even won Olympic bronze. But from September, the man once on a salary of $46 million, will play for Penrith, yes Penrith, in the State Baseball League.

In what could be deemed as the biggest coup ever in local sport, the 44-year-old former Major League Baseball pitcher has signed with the Penrith club for the upcoming 2014/15 season.

Koo, who has been playing in Australia since 2010, is also a member of the Sydney Blue Sox Australian Baseball League side, and during the upcoming season will split his time between the two clubs.

Before joining the Panthers, Koo previously played for the Baulkham Hills club where he was a major drawcard for the community every weekend he stepped out onto the mound.

career in both Korea and Japan, Koo, a pitcher, signed with the New York Mets in the MLB in 2005.

Despite being 35-years-old at the time, Koo was considered a rookie. He enjoyed his most memorable moment in the MLB on May 21, 2005 when he recorded his only major league hit, a double off of 10-time All Star and then New York Yankee Randy Johnson.

Due to injury, Koo only lasted one season in the MLB and admits he looks back on his American experience in different ways.

“It was a big opportunity for me but it probably would’ve been better if I went to America when I was younger because I would’ve been able to perform better,” he said.

“You have to practice every single day over there. The coaches push players harder and harder to improve. It was obviously really good but very tough.”

Joining Koo in Penrith is his former Baulkham Hills coach Shane Summersford, who has also signed on to become Penrith’s head coach for the upcoming season. Summersford, who also coaches the NSW U23 side, said Koo’s arrival in Penrith will be great for the game.

rysta Gregory is off to the bright lights of Los Angeles, except it won’t be for a trip down the famed Hollywood Boulevard, rather to the USA National Futsal Championships where she’ll represent Australia.

The 17-year-old Glenmore Park resident was selected for the Australian Youth Women’s team following her outstanding performance during last year’s Australian Futsal Association National School Futsal Titles.

Krysta, who was a standout whilst competing for NSW, admitted while her pintsize stature could be seen as a disadvantage in some sports, futsal certainly isn’t one of them.

“I think I stood out at the state competition because I am a small and fast player. These characteristics often serve my teammates as I am able to quickly and efficiently alternate from an attacking position to a defensive position,” she said.

“As I am small in size I am able to get around the opposition and create space. This ability makes me an asset to the team as it will create goal scoring opportunities.”

Glenmore Park’s Krysta Gregory wearing the green and gold Krysta was selected to wear the green and gold by World Cup coach and veteran Australian player Jodie Hammond.

“At a national level players need to have a high level of ability and fitness. It is also very important that they are hardworking team players who take instruction well,” she said.

Krysta is looking forward to tackling the tough US competition and is hoping the challenge will further her playing ability in the sport.

“I hope to push myself and try my hardest so that I can improve my ball control and understanding of the game,” she said.
