More parking on High Street to go As our CBD parking crisis escalates, Penrith Council approves a plan to dump eight current spots ALENA HIGGINS

ore outdoor dining opportunities and public seating is on the cards for High Street, but it will come at the expense of eight highly sought-after car spots.

Penrith Councillors have adopted an amendment to a “Linear Plaza Concept” between Station and Woodriff streets, which will see three permanent kerb extensions into the parking lane abutting the pedestrian crossings on the southern side.

Currently offering half-an-hour parking along the stretch, the Weekender estimates this equates to a turnover loss of a minimum of 128 potential shoppers per day between 9am to 5pm at full capacity.

The original concept, endorsed by Council in 2013, had proposed to transfer 10 car parks to the public domain to enhance “dining, socialisation, placemaking and amenity”.

Despite the slight reduction, Councillors Marcus Cornish and Jim Aitken refused to back the proposal, saying it will have a negative impact.

“It’s a detrimental kill to High Street,” Cr Aitken said.

generations and been in the business for a long time.”

Cr Aitken said other shopping precincts would benefit.

“To take more car parks away, all we’re doing is supporting Kmart and Westfield again,” he said.

Cr Cornish was equally defiant in his refusal to back the plan.

“I want more parking and I want free parking. I won’t settle for anything less,” he declared.

He said any restriction on traffic movements or parking would harm the town centre.

“People need a car in Penrith,” Cr Cornish said.

“It is a very vast area in comparison to other [LGAs] in the Sydney basin, so therefore you’re penalising people who are outside walking distance and destroying commerce.”

The result of extensive consultation, the proposal, slated to begin construction in early 2018, will resemble other footpath upgrade works in the street, including granite paving, tree planting, timber seats, garden bed hedges, special lighting and public art.

Moving all dining furniture beyond the footpath will also return a continuous shoreline along shopfronts, clear of obstructions for the visually impaired.

herever you turn, there’s speculation about the future of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Today I thought I’d take a look at the five key issues I believe are plaguing his government and the likelihood of him leading the Liberals to the next election...

Tony Abbott Wherever Turnbull goes, the smiling assassin from Warringah isn’t far away.

Tony Abbott has become a major problem for Turnbull, with the former Prime Minister maintaining a high profile presence through the media.

Unlike Kevin Rudd’s attempts to destabilise Julie Gillard, Abbott isn’t coming across as vindictive, in fact he’s managed to sell his ‘care factor’ strongly to the public and elements of the Liberal Party.

While it’s unlikely the door would ever be open for an Abbott return to the top job, there is no doubt that he will cause Turnbull a few more headaches ahead of the next election.

The solution: Turnbull needs to find room for Abbott on the front bench.

While it may be an uncomfortable reunion, it would at least force Abbott to fall a little more into line and go some way to stemming the flow of Abbott’s rise back into public popularity.

Same sex marriage Politicians have a unique knack for making things much more difficult than they should be.

The same sex marriage debate in Australia has gone on for way too long, and has now become a dangerous, highly emotive issue for the Government.

Marriage equality will always evoke strong passion and debate but the whole thing now is just silly and has become too much of a political football.

Turnbull needs to cut this whole thing off at the pass.

He has an opportunity to create a slice of history that nobody can take away from him: the Prime Minister that ticked off on a social change that will be applauded by the history books.

We will look back one day and wonder what took us so long.

Turnbull will either be remembered as the Prime Minister who made it happen or the failed leader who fiddled about and eventually sat on his hands.

2GB and News Limited Turnbull has no support from the key players at Radio 2GB (Alan Jones and Ray Hadley) nor the main political commentator at News Limited (Andrew Bolt).

All three lean to the conservative side of politics so for Turnbull not to have them on board is a disaster.

You can’t win western Sydney without 2GB and the Daily Telegraph on your side and you can’t win an election without winning western Sydney.

Election campaign planners would know that the Liberals face a media disaster if 2GB and News Limited can’t be won over.

Perception Malcolm Turnbull could lead the Panthers out with a meat pie in one hand and a VB in the other and still not convince us that he has the common touch.

Generally all Prime Ministers who eventually come to power have some financial success behind them, but most have managed to ensure it doesn’t plague their leadership.

In Turnbull’s case, he simply can’t escape the Point Piper perception. He doesn’t resonate with ‘real’ people, and the longer his tenure goes, the wider the gap is becoming.

The polls Pollies can tell you the polls don’t matter but rest assured, they do.

This week Turnbull again lost ground to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten as the nation’s preferred Prime Minister, according to Newspoll data.

The poll shows Labor leading the Coalition by 53 to 47 on a two-party preferred basis. It is a worrying sign for the PM. Nervous back benchers will only let it go on for so long. The polls would have them questioning Turnbull’s leadership.

Ambo response times getting worse “No one is listening”: Concerns that lives could be at risk due to a severe shortage of paramedics EMILY NEWTON

enrith patients are suffering and NSW paramedics are under enormous pressure, with the Nepean / Blue Mountains region having one of the longest wait times for ambulances in NSW. The latest Bureau of Health Information data reveals that only 55.7 per cent of “call-to-ambulance” response times for Priority 1 calls was under 15 minutes in the local region, a drop of 2.4 per cent from the previous year, making it the worst in the Sydney area.

Recently, locals have been feeling the pressure and anxiety of long wait times.

Renea Preston was at St Clair with a group of kids for light football training when one was injured.

They waited over 40 minutes for an ambulance to Nepean Hospital, a 15 minute drive away.

“She was running, and she just fell to the ground in pain. She was screaming,” Ms Preston said.

“From the time we first rang them, to when they came it was about 40 minutes, and I had to ring them twice in that time too. She actually fractured her hip, and the muscle had torn from the bone.

system, where we send the right paramedic to the right system.”

Ms Bianchi believes that paramedics need support to ensure they can do their job safely and efficiently.

NSW Ambulance Acting Executive Director Business Innovation and Planning, Clare Beech, said the Penrith superstation set to open late this year is a “vast improvement” on the current facility.

“All superstations, when operational, will be supported by a Make Ready Logistics Team who work to maximise time available for paramedics to dedicate to clinical duties, rather than cleaning and restocking emergency ambulances,” she said.

But APA NSW President Steve Pearce said the current ambulance crisis in Sydney’s west was unsustainable and has called on the State Government to address it.

“NSW Ambulance is in urgent need of an extra 500 paramedics and they could start by properly resourcing Sydney’s west.”

“The shortage of paramedics means patients are being forced to wait for unacceptable lengths of time before paramedics reach them and in the most serious cases, their lives are being placed at risk.”

enewed calls for community consultation on the future of Western Sydney Airport have been aired amid concerns residents are not being properly informed of the ramifications.

Last month, Penrith Councillor Kevin Crameri again requested to know why Council had failed to host its own public forum to allow locals to express their fears and have their questions answered.

He contends Forum on Western Sydney Airport (FOWSA), the Commonwealth body established to inform communities about the planning and progress of the airport, was full of proponents.

“It’s basically putting the fox in charge of the hen house,” he said.

However Penrith Mayor and FOWSA member John Thain disagreed, saying representatives would fight to lessen any adverse impacts.

Cr Thain said it would be premature to hold a forum given flight paths and merge points are not yet known.

“It’s the Federal Government’s infrastructure and it’s up to them to communicate to the community,” he said.

Fight for parking reaches boiling point Frustrated commuters now copping fines as the early morning car park battle escalates out of control EMILY NEWTON

enrith Station’s parking disaster has reached new heights as desperate locals are copping more fines instead of additional parking spots.

Glenmore Park’s Shaun Connell is one of the many commuters fed up with the situation.

Working full-time in North Sydney, Mr Connell is infuriated that by 7am, the untimed parking spots at Penrith Station are almost always completely gone.

Last week he parked in Penrith’s temporary commuter car park on the northern side of the station in an unmarked bay alongside other cars.

Coming home he was one of many to have been booked for parking outside of the bays, despite drivers having parked in this area for “weeks” without warning.

“It’s alright for them to shut down parts of the car park, but then they haven’t provided us with adequate alternatives,” he said.

“Now it feels like they’re trying to catch people out.”

existing closures while the station and commuter car park are upgraded, it seems there is no end in sight for desperate commuters at a station where parking was already at capacity.

Mr Connell is pleading with Penrith Council to give commuters, who already cop high travel costs and lengthy travel times, a fair go.

“We understand that they’ve got temporary car parks but they need to have a bit of leniency,” he said.

Penrith Council said that although commuter parking is a State Government responsibility, they’ve taken every opportunity to provide relief to residents by installing 369 untimed spaces at the temporary car parks in addition to removing timed street parking around Penrith Station.

“Council has also recently installed additional signage to reinforce the correct places to park. This has not changed any existing restrictions,” a Council spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Transport for NSW said there are almost 600 temporary commuter and untimed street car parking spaces available to customers – approximately the same amount that was available prior to construction starting.

Police stumble across trail bikes while attending to routine matter

Man left with serious injuries after motorcycle and car collide EMILY NEWTON

man remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition after a hit and run in Penrith last Sunday.

Just before 3.30pm on Sunday, a motorcycle and a Toyota Hilux utility collided at the intersection of Coreen Avenue and Sydney Smith Drive, before the ute mounted the curb and hit a fence.

The 31-year-old male rider of the motorcycle suffered multiple serious injuries to his head, leg, chest and pelvis.

He was treated on the scene by CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter before being taken to Westmead Hospital via road ambulance.

“CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic provided a blood transfusion and intubated the man at the scene, placing him in an induced coma to stabilise him,” a spokesperson said.

The rider of the motorcycle’s injuries were so severe, his leg was amputated at the knee.

Following the crash the driver from Jordan Springs fled the scene.

“It will be alleged in court that the 28-year-old male driver left the scene without exchanging particulars or rendering first aid, and was found by police walking in nearby Empire Circuit,” a police spokesperson said.

olice have seized 15 trail bikes as well as other property following a search of a premises on Progress Way, Cranebrook, last week.

On Tuesday, July 4, police were attending the location for an unrelated matter.

Following this, police had cause to apply for a search warrant that was granted and executed at 5pm that day as part of Strike Force Clovertop.

“As a result, police seized 15 trail bikes, prohibited weapons, a quantity of jewellery, electrical equipment, tools and

cameras,” a police spokesperson said this week.

No people were home during the time of the search warrant. At this stage, no charges have been laid.

The warrant follows a police crackdown on trail bike riders over recent months, following numerous calls and complaints from the public about riders who drive dangerously and harass residents.

As recently as June 12 police arrested a trail bike rider in Londonderry for dangerous driving, while another two rider arrests and seized bikes occurred at Cranebrook on May 25 for traffic matters.

Investigations are continuing.

CareFlight and NSW Ambulance treated the man who is in a critical but stable condition “He was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where checks revealed his provisional P2 licence was suspended.”

The driver faced court on Monday and was charged with ‘dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’, ‘negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’, ‘driving manner dangerous’, ‘driving whilst suspended’, and ‘failing to stop and render assistance after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm’.

He was conditionally bailed to appear in Penrith Local Court on September 8.

vehicle of interest in the Brayden Dillon murder investigation has been found in an underground car park at Jamisontown.

Acting on information received through Crime Stoppers, detectives from the Homicide Squad’s Strike Force Wongala located a white Mazda 3 in an underground car park at Jamisontown at about 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The car is seen as vital in the investigation into the murder earlier this year where police were called to a home in Glenfield on April 14.

There they found 15-year-old Brayden Dillon in bed with a gunshot wound to his head.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition, where he later died.

“Detectives have reviewed hours of CCTV footage throughout the Glenfield area tracking numerous vehicles, but this one is the only one which fits the timeframe,” Detective Chief Inspector Mark Henney said on Monday.

“This car arrives in the area about 15 minutes before the murder and is seen leaving the area less than five minutes after the murder.”

The mysterious white vehicle for assistance locating the vehicle on Monday, a 26-year-old man was arrested by members of the Tactical Operations Unit at an address in Dale Street, Seven Hills, at 11pm that evening.

He was taken to Blacktown Police Station where he was charged with murder.

The car, which isn’t believed to belong to the 26-year-old, was located and seized for forensic examination on Tuesday and inquiries continue in regards to the owner of the vehicle.

Det Ch Insp Henney also appealed for anyone with information that may assist to come forward.

“From the information we have gathered, the murder was planned and calculated, so it’s likely there are people who know what happened, even if they weren’t directly involved,” he said.

“Brayden’s murder was particularly callous – this was a 15-year-old boy who was shot dead while he slept in his bed over the Easter weekend.”

Originally going to be named ‘Explorer Princess’, the paddlewheeler was the dream of John Wakeling and his wife Helen who moved to the Nepean area in 1976.

“It is largely due to the tenacity of John Wakeling that Penrith has had the Nepean Belle for the past 35 years,” said current co-owner and captain Chris Bennett, who worked as a deckhand on the boat as a schoolboy.

“John held on to his dream despite immense opposition and initially not even being allowed to put her on the water.”

The Belle was launched on the Nepean River in 1982 and welcomed her first passengers on board with a charity gala.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has announced that pedestrians and cyclists in Penrith will benefit from an extra $2.6 million in funding for walkways and shared paths.

The extra funds will build projects such as: • A priority cycleway along Jane Street, Penrith including a 530 metre off road shared user path • A priority cycleway along Coombes Drive, Penrith including a 1km off road shared pathway.

Mr Ayres said the money was a big win for Penrith.

Man’s actions prove he’s not a flight risk, lawyer argues

A Caddens resident allegedly caught up in an elaborate drug syndicate has been denied bail.

The 30-year-old was remanded behind bars when he faced Penrith Local Court by video link last Friday, despite his mother-in-law offering a $200,000 surety.

The court heard the man, who is charged with ‘demand property with menaces to steal’, ‘intimidation’, ‘knowingly deal with proceeds of crime’ and ‘participate in a criminal group/contribute to criminal activity’ allegedly occurring between December 3 and 14 last year, had been in Los Angeles with his wife when he heard about the search warrants and organised for police to meet him at the airport on July 3.

His lawyer, Carolyn Davenport SC, argued this was not consistent with someone who was a flight risk.

“He came back to the country and gave himself up immediately, Your Honour,” she said.

The prosecution allege the accused threatened to “pump [the victim] full of bullets” if he gained access to a gun.

“These are not baseless threats that can’t be carried through,” the police prosecutor contended, adding the accused knows where the victim lives.

But Ms Davenport said her client had not made any attempt to find or contact the victim since December last year.

It comes after 12 people were arrested on June 28 when police raided 28 separate properties across NSW and the ACT, seizing five handguns, 6kg of ‘ice’, a record 10kg of ephedrine, a portable clandestine laboratory and more than $2 million in cash.

A 25-year-old Penrith man also arrested as part of the busts was bail refused and is due to reappear before Penrith Local Court today.

The accused’s matter was adjourned to September 1, when he will reappear in court.

Man jailed after unprovoked attack on partner at St Marys

A man who choked and kicked his partner in the face and body during a violent “drug binge” at St Marys has been sentenced to a minimum 16 months jail.

Penrith Local Court heard the victim was asleep in bed when Daniel Edward Cooper struck, not once but three times, at one stage whipping her with a video cord to the back of her arms and legs in a callous and unprovoked attack.

His lawyer pointed to his limited antecedence and “shame and regret” during her sentencing submissions last Thursday.

“He cannot believe how he could behave in that way,” she said.

“I ask that Your Honour accept this is a man who has made a terrible mistake… and one who is determined to turn his life around so nothing like this ever happens again.”

Cooper was charged with three counts of ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ and one count of ‘intentional choking’.

Magistrate Stephen Corry took into account his very limited criminal history and that the offence occurred against a backdrop of meth amphetamines use, but said there needed to be a significant element of general deterrence and denunciation.

He was handed a two-year aggregate sentence and will be eligible for release on parole in February 2018.

Judge warns man not to “stuff up” after showing leniency

A man who tried to steal a Shetland pony statue, along with a string of other offences has narrowly avoided a long stint in custody.

Jamie Martin fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘shoplifting’, ‘goods in custody’, ‘failure to appear’, ‘licence expired’, ‘drug possession’, ‘assault’, ‘contravene AVO’ and breaching a number of Section 9 bonds.

A puzzled Acting Judge Peter Miszalski questioned how the 34-year-old thought he could exit the store undetected holding a statue the size of a medium dog.

“Seemed like a good idea at the time?” he queried.

“Yeah, it was dumb,” Martin replied from the dock.

The father-of-three’s lawyer submitted he was in the process of trying to turn his life around and was currently writing a book to deter other young people from turning to a life of crime.

“I know I’ve mucked up in the past…

I’m sick of being a stuff up,” Martin said.

“I’m sick of letting my partner down and my kids.”

The court heard in one incident Martin threatened to burn his mother’s house down with the dog inside during a verbal confrontation.

Judge Miszalski ultimately gave him the benefit of the doubt, sentencing him to a short non-parole period.

“Don’t stuff up,” he warned.

Woman refused bail despite breast cancer diagnosis

A woman who stalked a number of St Marys police officers has been refused bail again, despite being diagnosed with breast cancer in custody.

Maria Beradette Hannigan faced Penrith Local Court via video link for a subsequent bail application last Thursday, after a scan in February revealed a carcinoma.

Her lawyer argued the level of care in custody was inadequate, pointing to the fact that it took several months before Hannigan was made aware of her diagnosis.

“This is cancer Ms Hannigan has been diagnosed with,” her lawyer stressed.

But Magistrate Stephen Corry refused to allow her back into the community given the escalating nature of her offending before her arrest.

“Ultimately I have to have regard for the safety of the victims and public noting what the psychiatrist says,” he said.

The court heard a psychiatrist found Hannigan to have a “high risk of maladaptive behaviour to seek police attention”.

Hannigan, who is due to have a double mastectomy imminently, was visibly upset when the determination was handed down.

Her matter was adjourned to today (July 14).

21-year-old released from jail after 10 months on remand

Hebron Alesi has been released from jail after serving 10 months on remand.

The 21-year-old faced Penrith Local Court for sentence last Friday after pleading guilty to ‘common assault’ and ‘affray’. Magistrate Stephen Corry said people should expect to feel safe when they are out and about.

“People are entitled to go about their daily life without running the risk of getting assaulted,” he said.

He was convicted and sentenced to four months each, resulting in his release that day.

Man ordered off the roads after drink driving offence

Troy McTackett has been barred from driving for six months after pleading guilty to drink driving. The 42-year-old fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with mid-range drink driving.

The court heard the regional sales manager was on his way to pick up his son from Parkes in the early hours of the morning when he was pulled over.

“If he loses his licence today, he loses his independence and ability to work,” his lawyer submitted.

Magistrate Stephen Corry pointed out he was double the legal limit when he was apprehended.

“I’ve no doubt you are a person of good character and you contribute to the community,” he prefaced, “but you were lucky police stopped you.”

He was convicted and fined $600.

Kingswood: Police investigate suspicious vehicle blaze

Investigations into a vehicle fire that occurred on Santley Crescent, Kingswood around 6pm on Sunday, July 9 are ongoing.

Police and Fire Brigade were called to the location and the fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread to any other structures. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

St Marys: Police hunting thief in pyjamas

A business on Queen Street, St Marys was broken into via the roof last weekend.

Between 4.45pm on Friday, July 7 and 10am on Saturday, July 8, the combined workshop and office building was broken into and office equipment has been stolen.

It is alleged the thief has gained access through the roof area of the location.

When the owner attended, he has seen a male person described as wearing an off white hooded jumper and red and white striped pyjamas running off.

Investigations are continuing and anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Penrith: Man charged after urinating on police car

A man from the Blue Mountains forgot about CCTV when he drunkenly urinated on a police car last weekend.

At 11.50pm on Saturday, July 8, a 26-year-old man from Katoomba left a pub on High Street, Penrith and walked past Penrith Police Station.

He walked around to the side of one of the parked police vehicles and proceeded to urinate on it before walking away.

The incident was reported to police who reviewed CCTV footage and then began a patrol of the nearby area.

The man was located a short distance away, where he allegedly stated to officers, “I just need to take a piss”, despite having only recently relieved himself.

After being taken back to Penrith Police Station he was arrested and charged with ‘wilful and obscene exposure’ and ‘offensive behaviour’.

He will appear in court on August 31.

Penrith: Man’s fall leads to his arrest after police chase

After fleeing his vehicle and attempting to run from police, a man with an outstanding warrant has tripped and fallen, leading to his arrest.

Police observed a 33-year-old man from St Clair driving along Colless Street, Penrith at about 2.05pm on Thursday, July 6.

When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, the man accelerated and travelled along Derby Street.

In an attempt to avoid police, he pulled into a driveway on the street, left his vehicle and jumped over the back fence of the property.

A foot pursuit began and the man continued to avoid police along Parker Street.

While running, it is alleged that he threw a white bag into the garden of a residence.

The man then ran to the middle of the roadway where he tripped and fell.

He then violently thrashed and turned his body as police attempted to arrest him. He was conveyed to Penrith Police Station where it was discovered there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

A search of the discarded white bag revealed 1.6 grams of a white substance believed to be ‘ice’.

The man was charged with numerous offences with bail refused.

Opposition ramps up push to dump controversial proposal

Weekend demand leads to more train services for Western Line EMILY NEWTON

enrith is set to see weekend train services doubled following a massive 68 per cent growth in weekend demand on Sydney’s train network between 2013 and 2016.

In an attempt to ease crippling weekend road traffic, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance has announced more than 750 new train services will be added across the network in the biggest uplift to weekend services in a decade.

“We know that Saturday traffic in Sydney is often worse than weekday morning peak hours,” Mr Constance said.

“Sundays are also hugely popular for travel, so we’re boosting services to give people more options on the weekend.”

While this doesn’t help Monday to Friday commuters, the additional services are set to relieve pressure on weekend services where growth is expected to continue.

“Travel patterns are changing, people rely more on public transport on weekends for work and social events, so we need to adapt and entice more people to think about the train first on weekends,” Mr Constance said.

“Boosting frequency will make leaving the car at home a more attractive option.”

SW Opposition Leader Luke Foley and Member for Londonderry Prue Car took to the streets last weekend opposing the proposed Eastern Creek waste incinerator.

Last Sunday, Mr Foley and Ms Car joined concerned volunteers door-knocking and collecting signatures from families in nearby homes who fear toxic pollution produced from the plant.

In her position as Shadow Minister Assisting the Leader on Western Sydney, Ms Car said the Department of Planning

has already received more than a thousand submissions on this issue, most in opposition.

“What more do they need to make a decision and abandon this waste incinerator,” she asked.

“It is now obvious to the people in the path of this massive plant that the Government seems to be seeking ways to make it happen – rather than take the very real health concerns of people in western Sydney into account.”

If approved, the incinerator would be the world’s largest, producing enough energy to power 200,000 homes by burning 1.3 million tonnes of garbage a year.

n news that make every canine’s tail wag, Dogs NSW is calling on the State Government for peace of mind through a permanent home.

With more than 10,000 members, Dogs NSW has begun a petition to urge the Government to consider creating a permanent state dog park on its 27-yearold grounds at Orchard Hills.

Dogs NSW spokesperson Brian Crump said while their current lease runs for another 11 years, infrastructure construction that has begun next door to Dogs NSW’s headquarters for an employment hub leaves the future of adequate canine activities in the area threatened.

“With all the investment going along

Luddenham Road we believe now is the time to act,” he said.

“If we have the security of tenure what we can do is invest in our infrastructure.”

The Dogs NSW grounds currently has 14 show rings, administration, German Shepherd Dog League of NSW facilities and grounds used for dog sports and trialling as well as sheep used for hearing, agility and obedience.

“Dogs NSW runs numerous canine events and educates the public about dogs and responsible ownership,” Mr Crump said.

“We want to develop Dogs NSW’s grounds into a State Dog Park, but such an investment would require a guarantee or tenure.

“With all this development taking place in the area, Dogs NSW is requesting the

government to either sell the land to Dogs NSW or grant it a lease in perpetuity.”

The petition encourages the government to create a permanent State Dog Park at the current site with appropriate facilities to “bring Dogs NSW to the world stage”.

The State Dog Centre would feature existing show rings and training areas, plus invest in expansions for a library and museum, showcasing books and artefacts on all things canine.

It would also incorporate an Education Centre and an off-leash park area for neighbourhood residents, that would be open to the public.

Police are investigating a home invasion in Kingswood on Tuesday morning involving up to four perpetrators.

Multiple police vehicles and detectives filled the small cul-de-sac at Sallee Glen as they tried to piece together the incident.

Inspector Branko Kubecka said the possibly armed perpetrators have forced entry into the home, with the occupant managing to narrowly evade them.

“Between 2am and 6am this morning, police received a report that three, possibly four, males have forced their way into the dwelling here,” Insp Kubecka said.

“We believe that one of them may have been armed with a weapon.

“There was an occupant in the house that fled and went to a different residence and then phoned police.

“They escaped prior to the offenders actually entering into the house. There was no one harmed.”

Witnesses said an occupant of the Sallee Glen home looked visibly shaken following the incident.

Detectives are currently speaking to the victim who is helping with investigations surrounding what could be the motive behind the home invasion.

“It looks like our four perpetrators have ransacked the home and taken a number of items,” Insp Kubecka said.

“Right now we’re investigating exactly what was taken and what any motive was behind any of this.”

While police say they are following a few leads, it is currently too early to tell the importance of them and investigations are ongoing into the home invasion and who the offenders may be.

The morning break-in follows another that allegedly occurred at the same property the evening before (Monday, July 10) around 7.30pm.

Young journalist tackles big issues Wallacia writer Jessica Cortis is determined to impact change as she pursues a career in the media EMILY NEWTON

ne chance encounter in Nepal inspired Wallacia’s Jessica Cortis to write an emotional investigative story, leading her to be recognised as one of Australia’s best up and coming journalists.

During a five-week internship at the Nepali Times in 2016, the former Caroline Chisholm College student met the Australian Ambassador for Nepal while investigating another story.

“We got talking and he told me about ‘Forget Me Not’ – an Australian nongovernment organisation that unwittingly became embroiled in an illegitimate orphanage scandal in Nepal,” she said.

Ms Cortis discovered that the founder, who genuinely wanted to help orphans in Nepal, had been scammed and the children she thought she was helping weren’t orphans at all.

“They were recruited from decrepit villages and false documents were created to give the illusion they were parentless,” Ms Cortis said.

“My head was swirling – I realised that if I was going to become a journalist, this was the kind of stuff that I needed to write.

“I needed to write the story so that I could bring this important issue to light and impact change.”

She returned home and with encouragement from her journalism lecturer Dr Asha Chand, she wrote an investigative feature entitled, ‘Forget Me Not’.

For her investigation, Ms Cortis, a Bachelor of Communications (Dean’s Scholar) student at Western Sydney University, has been named as a finalist in the Walkley Student Journalist of the Year Award.

The Walkley Awards are considered the pinnacle of achievement for Australian journalists and finalists are selected on the basis of journalistic excellence.

Dr Chand said Ms Cortis deserved the recognition.

“Jessica’s work demonstrates the professional capabilities of our students,” Dr Chand said.

“We are thrilled that Jessica has written a story that makes such a difference to our society.”

Ms Cortis hopes to pursue a career in broadcast journalism while exploring documentary production and new ways of telling stories.

The winners will be announced on Wednesday, July 26, while Ms Cortis will be on well deserved holiday.

Sleeping rough for a night to help those without a bed this winter

wo St Marys business owners will sleep rough for a night to raise money for the fight against local homelessness.

Michelle Latham from Heavenly Celebrations and Colleen Borg of Untamed Flowers are among dozens giving up their beds on Friday, August 4 for the annual ‘Sleep In Your Car’ event.

“Homelessness affects many members of the western Sydney community, and as business owners we believe it is an important part of our role to help raise awareness and funds because it is a serious issue,” Ms Latham said.

“It can affect anyone, you don’t know what is happening in someone’s life where they could get to a stage where they’ve got nothing.”

Hosted by Fusion Western Sydney and Platform Youth Services as part of Homelessness Week, ‘Sleep In Your Car’ is about sleeping rough to raise awareness and funds to support the over 105,000 Australians without a safe place to sleep.

Ms Borg said that while it’s easy for businesses to make a donation, taking part in the experience is a whole different story.

“We hope that other businesses will see this and think, ‘if Michelle and Colleen can do it, we can do it too’,” she said.

hree senior midwives from Fiji and Papua New Guinea are taking back vital knowledge they’ve learned from local midwives to their hospitals at home.

For seven weeks the midwives had the opportunity to work across the Women’s and Children’s Health department and learn about clinical best practice at Nepean Hospital.

In partnership with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Nepean Hospital Pacific Midwife Facilitator Kylie McCauley said the program equips the midwives with the skills and knowledge to apply their observations and learnings.

“As well as giving our Pacific midwives the opportunity to experience midwifery care in a busy, Australian hospital, the program develops the leadership skills of the midwives, equipping them to apply their learnings in their own health settings,” she said.

“The midwives at Nepean Hospital also really appreciate the opportunity to meet and work with our midwifery colleagues from overseas.”

The solution to the parking problems at Penrith Station seems relatively simple to an overly simplistic bloke like myself. Why can’t Council and the State Government work together to build a multi-deck car park on the southern side of the station, where the current Belmore Street car park sits? It makes logical sense. Given the money being spent on other things around our city, such as $3 million on a park nobody uses, I am sure an arrangement to fund the car park could be realised, and the problems somewhat solved. What am I missing?

New beginning for grateful residents Controversial Millers Point sales result in hundreds of new social housing homes – including in Penrith EMILY NEWTON

enrith has welcomed the 500th home that has been built from the proceeds of the Millers Point social housing sales.

Locals Val Bemrose and Colleen Peaston moved in to their new homes along with other residents at the end of May, calling them “absolutely beautiful”.

“I was a relocation, I waited nearly 16 years for my relocation,” Ms Bemrose said.

The pair have praised Housing NSW for listening to people who depend on social housing, after many years of experience living in old dwellings that are expensive to fix.

“If you’ve got something nice and new, then people will look after it,” Ms Bemrose said.

“They’re learning by us as well, unless we tell them the kinks, they don’t know.

“We have wonderful neighbours here, and I think that’s where Housing got it right.

“In saying that, Housing needs to keep their maintenance up, they need to do their part as well.

“Don’t promise us things and then not give them to us.”

After previous experiences in social housing, today Ms Bemrose and Ms Peaston agree that the new property makes residents feel “safe and comfortable”.

Minister for Social Housing, Pru Goward said the money stemming from the sales of the Millers Point properties ensures more social housing is built to better service community needs.

“These sales are helping the NSW Government provide vital housing for some of our most vulnerable people across the state,” she said.

“Another 290 units are currently under construction across the wider Sydney area, the Illawarra and the North Coast of NSW.” While the sale of the Millers Point units provided controversy as long term residents were kicked out of their homes by the NSW Government, the sell-off of the housing is expected to fund around 1,500 new dwellings.

“I feel sorry for the people at Millers Point that they had to move out, but I’m just hoping and praying that they found something just as beautiful as what we got,” Ms Bemrose said.

Ms Peaston is also thrilled with her new home.

“I’ll always be grateful,” she said.

Raise your paw and show you care Opportunity to volunteer in the community: Locals needed to help raise and train Guide Dogs EMILY NEWTON

og lovers in Penrith would be barking mad to miss out on the opportunity to help Guide Dogs NSW/ACT as they urgently find homes for 30 Guide Dog puppies.

A unique experience, Puppy Raising volunteers care for a Guide Dog puppy for a year, from when it is eight-weeks-old to 14-months-old, playing an invaluable role in preparing it for its potential career as a Guide Dog. Karen Burley from Erskine Park is helping raise her fifth puppy, with three currently calling her place home.

“I’ve got one just starting, one halfway through, and one just finished,” she laughed.

“I love it, how can you not love looking after these beautiful dogs.”

Ms Burley recommends anyone thinking about getting involved with Guide Dogs to go ahead and put their paw up to volunteer.

“At the end of it, whether they pass and become a Guide Dog or not, you go from seeing this little puppy to when they finish, and there’s such a difference in them. They’re so obedient,” she said.

“It’s sad saying goodbye to them, but you know that they’re going off to do a great job.”

Puppy Development Manager, Karen Hayter, said that Puppy Raisers help introduce pups to the sights, sounds and smells they are likely to encounter as a Guide Dog. “We are looking for people that are home most of the time, who are interested in putting effort into training and socialising the dog. What you will get in return is a fantastic experience,” Ms Hayter said.

“Our volunteer Puppy Raisers make a wonderful contribution in helping to transform a playful puppy into a responsible Guide Dog that will one day change the life of someone who is blind or vision impaired.”

With 28 people diagnosed with vision loss that cannot be corrected every day in Australia, Guide Dogs is always searching for more volunteers.

Taking over two years and costing more than $35,000 to breed, raise and train each Guide Dog, they are provided at no cost to those who need them.

DV & Disability Forum Last week I attended a Domestic Violence and Disability forum held at The Joan which attracted over 70 participants from various community organisations including domestic violence and disability services.

It was great to have representatives from so many committed organisations operating within Penrith and western Sydney. The forum itself was made possible through Club Grants funding from St Marys Band Club.

The statistics surrounding domestic violence are shocking. One in three women over the age of 15 suffers abuse at some time in their lives. And those with a disability are especially vulnerable.

On average, over a 12 month period, one woman loses her life every week as a result of domestic violence. Of course, domestic violence is not only physical abuse. It takes many forms including intimidation, coercion or isolation, emotional, sexual and financial abuse.

It’s also the major cause of homelessness for women and their children.

need to work together and we need to build the City’s service capacity to respond directly to this challenge.

The forum looked at the identification and response to domestic violence, women with intellectual disability, navigating domestic violence services and legal help along with NDIS assistance.

Council is proud to provide ongoing support to the Nepean Domestic Violence Network to deliver projects and events that raise awareness of domestic and family violence as well as reduce the levels of violence across our city.

The importance of the forum has been assisting organisations, including government agencies to work together to meet the needs of older people and people with disability in our community. It provided an opportunity for Penrith services and participants to develop their knowledge and skills and to network with other agencies to respond to the challenges of domestic violence and disability.

Banking superheroes helping kids BOQ staff get into the community spirit as they raise money for hospitals across Australia during July EMILY NEWTON

s it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Penrith’s Bank of Queensland (BOQ) heroes raising money for our kids throughout the month of July.

Penrith staff ditched their uniforms and let their inner superheroes shine last Friday, to kick start BOQ’s Banking on our Kids appeal with their ‘Be a Hero Dress Up Day’ where funds raised are donated to the Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia.

BOQ Penrith Owner Manager, Anthony Walker, said his team were excited to dress as heroes and raise awareness throughout the local community for such an important cause.

“It’s not every day our branch dress as heroes, so we plan on having some fun and raising as much money as we can,” he said.

“We have an incredibly generous community in Penrith. Many of us take our family’s health for granted and even from our own community there are children receiving treatment in hospital every year.”

Locals can donate to the campaign by popping in to the BOQ Penrith branch.

“Every child deserves to be happy and healthy,” Mr Walker said.

“We encourage everyone to come and visit us in branch this July where we will be taking donations to go directly towards funding medical equipment and research through Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia.”

Staff last Friday said locals had supported the branch already with some great donations to kick start fundraising for the month.

Children’s Hospital Foundation Acting CEO, Damon Mudge, said BOQ’s Banking on our Kids appeal funds vital medical equipment and supports research to find faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for some of the most devastating childhood illnesses and injuries.

“We can’t discover the cures and treatments to save sick kids without medical research,” he said.

“And we can’t fund that research without the support of appeals like BOQ’s Banking on our Kids.”

Now in its 13th year, the appeal has raised over $1.95 million and this year aims to raise a further $200,000 in support of sick kids with donations going directly to Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia.

new occupational therapy tilt-inspace wheelchair was donated to Nepean Hospital last month that will help patients in the neuro-surgery ward profoundly.

Elinor Stuart, Senior Occupational Therapist at Nepean Hospital, was on hand to receive the generous donation from the Nepean Hospital Volunteers.

“It will be used for patients who have a brain injury to get them out of bed earlier,” Ms Stuart said.

“They will get out of bed and interact

more with their environment and help them with their breathing and therapy.”

The chair will make a significant difference to occupational therapists at the hospital, and is worth about $9,500.

While the hospital already has similar chairs, the newest donation is more comfortable and easier to operate, benefiting both patients and staff at the hospital.

“We’re very grateful for the Nepean Hospital Volunteers to be able to buy this chair for us because, within our department budget, it would have taken quite some time for us to save up and buy one,” Ms Stuart said.

t has been said that the true measure of a person is how they behave or perform when they think no one is watching. Can we draw similar conclusions in relation to running a business? I think we can.

One way of thinking about this is in relation to motivation. If you are trying to do everything alone and have no one with which to share the load (either directly or in a supportive capacity), you may find yourself running out of steam.

Whereas if you have someone working alongside you, you may discover that their very presence in your business can push you along to strive higher and further than you thought possible.

To give you a personal, non-business anecdote: I regularly attend an adult swim squad at my gym. On the days that I swim with this group, I reach at least 2km, whereas by myself, I rarely swim more than 1km. The difference is, no one except me knows how many laps I’ve done or how fast I am doing them. This is not to say that I should not learn to push myself without external motivators. But the goal is far easier

when there are others there in various capacities, creating a more conducive environment.

Another aspect of what you do when ‘no one’s watching’, is in relation to donations and local community support. Many businesses choose to donate part of their profits to charity or contribute volunteer hours to community events/organisations. In return, most charities provide some sort of recognition for your business. But would you still donate the same amount of money or time or resources if there was no kudos or PR opportunity? There is nothing wrong with receiving recognition, but do you contribute purely because of the tangible, profit-related benefits that you might get back? Or do you donate because you want to make a difference to a particular cause? Would you still do it without the recognition?

We all operate differently and everyone’s motivations are valid.

But sometimes it is worth pausing to consider what motivates us, and whether our actions are contingent on who sees what we’re doing.

It’s been a tough year for injured Panthers prop Sam McKendry, but he had some good news last week with his wife Kirsten giving birth to little Isaac on Friday. Weighing in at 7.1 pounds and 50cm long, the new baby is in very good health. Kirsten is also doing well and Sam is about as proud as you can get, as this beautiful photo he shared on social media shows. We understand Isaac’s beaming great grandfather has already declared the little one a Panther of the future.

Penrith’s first serious junior title, with the club winning the Jersey Flegg Grand Final over Parramatta in 1977. A few of the players from that side are hopeful that the achievement will be recognised by the Panthers club, ear marking the final home game of the year as an opportunity to honour the side. The Panthers celebrated the 30th anniversary of the premiership by winning what was the last ever Jersey Flegg title in 2007.

ostpone the holiday plans!

The Panthers revived their Finals hopes last weekend with an unconvincing but important win over the high flying Manly Sea Eagles, maintaining ninth spot on the ladder and staying within reach of the eighth placed Eels.

Penrith now head across the Tasman to take on a Warriors side that sit just behind them on the ladder and could grab ninth place with a victory on Friday evening.

The ladder positions make this a particularly important game for the Panthers especially with Parramatta enjoying a bye this weekend and opening up a six

point gap on the loser of the Mount Smart Stadium showdown.

Penrith got rid of one annoying stat last weekend when they finally defeated a top eight team and they’ll need to hurdle another to beat the Warriors – winning outside of NSW. Trips to Melbourne, Brisbane and Townsville this season have all resulted in a rather quiet plane trip home.

The Panthers may have broken a two match losing run and secured the much needed competition points last Saturday against Manly but the side’s attacking options still left plenty to be desired. Matt Moylan and Nathan Cleary are both trying their butts off but just aren’t quite clicking or reading each other as we’d hope at this stage of the season.

To make matters worse I understand Moylan has a slight hamstring issue that has hampered his preparation somewhat this week.

The good news is that the side’s forwards are really starting to stand up with James Tamou and Trent Merrin in particular having strong games last weekend while Isaah Yeo continues to emerge as a potential dark horse for the Merv Cartwright Medal – he’s been extremely busy in almost every match this season.

Even the most carefree of gamblers would find it hard to lay a bet on this match – it features two of the competition’s most inconsistent teams, both capable of producing a dynamite performance.

Unfortunately both are also just as likely to turn in a stinker. In short, it’s a tipster’s nightmare and you wouldn’t want either of these two sides playing for your life.

My big fear is that the Warriors jump out to an early 12 or 18 point lead – as they have been known to do this year – and the Panthers just don’t have the attacking flair to claw back the margin as other

sides have done at various points of the season. Penrith need to stay with the Warriors during the first half as much as they can, even going try for try if needed.

If the margin gets out by two or more tries I’d have real fears that Penrith don’t have what it takes to come back (although the corresponding game earlier this year would suggest otherwise!).

I don’t tip the Warriors no matter what the circumstance – most of the time it pays off – but even with that rule in play I think the Panthers may just have a little too much for them this weekend. The home side will be rested after a bye but the Panthers have their confidence back after that win against Manly and spirits seemed pretty high in the camp this week.

I’d expect a roller coaster ride over the 80 minutes but I think Penrith will be keeping the top eight on notice.

fter bursting onto the scene last season, Panthers forward James Fisher-Harris quickly became the next big thing largely thanks to his powerful runs and bone-rattling hits.

However, after back to back serious injuries, fans haven’t had much opportunity this season to see the 21-year-old Kiwi international in action.

Last Saturday afternoon, following eight weeks on the sideline nursing an injured hamstring, Fisher-Harris returned to Penrith’s reserve grade side in emphatic fashion.

His comeback performance was so well received, that he was immediately ushered straight back into first grade for tonight’s clash against the Warriors in his

homeland, New Zealand. Speaking with Extra Time before flying to Auckland on Wednesday morning, Fisher-Harris said he’s glad to be back after one of the most frustrating injuries of his young career.

“It’s been pretty hard when you can’t stay out on the field that long. I just had to look after my hammy and try and get back playing footy,” he said.

“I’ve never had any hamstring problems before this one. Everything just happened at once.”

Earlier this season, Fisher-Harris spent several weeks on the sideline with a busted eye socket.

While it hasn’t been a year to remember for the second-rower on the field, it’s certainly been a memorable one off it after the recent announcement that his partner, Natalie, was expecting their first child.

Fisher-Harris said the news of Natalie’s pregnancy helped take the pain and frustration away.

“I can’t wait until she is born,” he said.

James Fisher-Harris and his partner Natalie are expecting their first child “It’s something away from footy that I’m looking forward to especially when I was injured.”

Fisher-Harris will feel right at home tonight at Mt Smart Stadium with many of his family members making the long trek to see his return to the NRL. Joining him in Auckland will be teammate and childhood friend Corey Harawira-Naera, who is also expected to have plenty of family and friends in the stands.

Fisher-Harris and Harawira-Naera grew up on New Zealand’s North Island,

regularly playing in junior rugby union representative sides together.

Despite taking his spot in the starting side, Fisher-Harris said he’s proud of how far Harawira-Naera has come this season.

“He’s been doing good, he took the opportunity and he’s been killing it now.

Good on him,” he said.

“This will be his first game in New Zealand as a first grader, so I’m sure heaps of his family will be coming to watch as well.”

Fisher-Harris will start tonight’s game from the bench.

The five players who are key to Penrith’s future success

t the start of the season, Penrith were the bookies’ favourites to be NRL Premiers in 2017 and, while they haven’t quite lived up to expectations this season, they are still in the hunt for a shot at the title if they can get through the Warriors tonight.

If Penrith aren’t crowned Premiers this season, they certainly have the talent and ability to be in the mix next year and beyond.

For this week’s column, I thought I’d list the top five players Penrith need in their line-up every week in order to guide them to their first premiership since 2003.

Reagan Campbell-Gillard Reagan is an outstanding young forward in our game and I’d like to see him play even more minutes.

He’s so impactful, his defence is good, he’s intimidating and has a lot of mongrel in him. I like the way he quietly leads the pack around without having to be too vocal to get through his work.

Tyrone Peachey (pictured) The mystery remains where Tyrone’s best position is but I’d hate to see any

other team in the competition have him.

You need a team that’s going to have size, athleticism and smarts but you also need a player that’s going to play footy and that’s what Tyrone does. He is an x-factor and whoever can unlock how to use him right, is going to reap the rewards.

Matt Moylan Moyza has to be in Penrith’s team if they are ever going to win a premiership any time soon.

He’s been playing well recently at six with some brilliant touches but what he’s best at is being able to chime into a game.

It’s something that can make an average team better and steer them towards a title.

Being the captain, I’m sure he’ll develop into a great five-eighth and his ball playing and knowledge of the game is right up there with some of the best.

Trent Merrin I picked Mez purely because you need experience in your pack. Mez has played for Australia, played for NSW and has been a consistent performer for many years – you know what you’re getting with him. Over the past six weeks, I think he’s been Penrith’s best forward along with Campbell-Gillard.

I’d one day like to see Mez in the front row with Isaah Yeo at lock and Peachey and Bryce Cartwright on the edge.

I

t is one of Penrith’s greatest ever comeback stories, but given how the game ended, it often doesn’t rate a mention in the history books.

It was August 1, 2009 and Ivan Cleary was visiting Penrith Stadium with his Warriors side, taking on Matt Elliott’s Panthers who had struggled for consistency throughout the season.

The Warriors produced an impressive first half and led 20-6 at the break, before extending their lead to 32-6 early in the second half and seemingly wrapping up the contest.

But with 25 minutes to go, the Panthers would commence an incredible final period that left the crowd stunned.

Shane Elford crossed for a try, before

Luke Walsh and Frank Puletua also grabbed four pointers in quick succession, bringing the score back to 32-24 in the blink of an eye.

Was a miracle about to unfold?

With three minutes on the clock and eight points behind, it still looked like the Panthers would fall short.

But Wade Graham had other ideas, producing a beautiful ball to Michael Jennings who powered over from close range.

Now down 32-30, the Panthers were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds, giving Michael Gordon the opportunity to put the game into extra time.

He obliged, and the score was 32-all when the referee blew full-time.

A pulsating period of extra time began, but the game couldn’t find a deciding point and after 10 minutes of overtime, it was declared a draw.

“It certainly wasn’t our attitude, it certainly wasn’t our execution but we certainly showed enough belief in each other to get out of a tight situation,” Panthers coach Matt Elliott said “I had no doubt in what we were capable of... it was just about putting some discipline and possession together that looked remotely constructive.”

Warriors coach Ivan Cleary, who would later replace Elliott at the Panthers, was dejected after the contest.

“We should have put them to bed without a doubt, but they got a sniff and threw caution to the wind,” he said.

“In the end I thought we had the better of golden point, but it becomes a bit of a lottery.”

The game may not have ended with a Penrith victory, but the 32-all draw remains one of the most memorable games ever played at Penrith Stadium.

A decade ago performing the hits of Vegas icons like the Rat Pack wasn’t likely to get you much exposure in mainstream music circles.

But the arrival of artists like Michael Buble changed all that, and helped paved the way for young performers like ‘The Voice’ 2013 winner Harrison Craig.

Last year the 22-year-old released his ‘Kings of Vegas’ album and since then he’s performed the music of icons including Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett to audiences around the country.

With a voice that seamlessly slips into a bygone era, Harrison has managed to make a career out of performing the classics that he was exposed to as a child.

“It’s a timeless period in music and I was attracted to it after first hearing it when I was five-years-old,” Harrison said.

“I remember hearing Nat King Cole around the house and I just thought to myself what a beautiful performer.”

Harrison’s talent was first brought to Australia’s attention through his appearance on ‘The Voice’, and four years on he still keeps in touch with his former coach.

“Seal just messaged me last night actually,” Harrison said.

“We talk quite often and he’s a great guy with a good heart and he tries to lend a hand where he can which is great.

“It’s really important to have a person of that magnitude in your corner and it’s great to be able to call him a friend.”

As for where the Vegas road will take him, it sounds like Harrison is ready for a bit of a detour.

“To be honest, I feel like there’s a change in the waters for me,” he said.

“I really love the style that I do and I think it’s great but I heard some really great advice from Prince before he passed away, he said ‘a great artist never stays in once place’ and I think that’s really true.”

For the last year Harrison has been working on material for a new album which is due out early next year.

This time around the release will feature original music inspired by the 80s.

When it comes to investing, it goes without saying that the investment return is very important to the client.

It is imperative for a financial planner to manage a client’s expectations and ensure that they are happy with the risk and return they are likely to receive over the course of the investment.

Over the long-term, by far the biggest contributor to return is the asset allocation. The higher an investment’s exposure to growth assets, such as shares and property, the higher the likely long-term return. Growth assets in the long-term have higher returns than cash and bonds; they also have much more volatility.

Short-term investments normally have a higher allocation to safer asset classes.

The reason for this is that in the event of a bad year for growth assets, they won’t be invested long enough to recover with subsequent above average years.

Long-term investments will have a range of both above and below average periods of performance, and over the length of the investment likely to end up with investment returns close to the expected average. Therefore, having a higher exposure to shares and property in order to increase the likely returns is a risk worth taking.

Financial planners try and limit the risk without negatively impacting the investment return.

The main method is the use of diversification. The use of managed funds and index based investments is a method to spread your exposure.

Managed funds work by pooling the money of a number of clients and investing in a wide range of assets. Most superannuation funds are invested in this method or something similar. Different managed funds have different investment strategies and philosophies they use to choose their investment options.

As financial planners, we try and select managed funds with different types of philosophies with the thinking that different approaches will lead to funds over and underperforming the average at different times, further reducing risk.

So many of us from year to year try to get in shape for winter sports or in time for the warmer months, but for some of us we go too hard, too fast and this is normally the calling card for shin splints!

You’ve probably heard of them but what actually are shin splints?

Shin splints is a term used to describe pain and swelling in the front of the lower legs, often during or after exercise.

Commonly it is known as Tibial Stress Syndrome (TSS).

The most common form of shin splints, being medial tibial stress syndrome, commonly presents with vague, diffuse pain of the lower leg, along the lower third of the shin with physical activity.

Pain presents worse at the beginning of exercise and gradually eases throughout training and within minutes of cessation of exercise.

As the injury progresses, pain can present after far less activity and may occur at rest. If left untreated, shin splints can progress into stress fractures along the shinbone.

What causes shin splints?

Shin splints are aggravated by repetitive stress to the shin from activities such as running or walking.

Training errors tend to be the most common risk factor, especially as we attempt to do ‘too much, too fast’. Other factors can include running on hard or uneven surfaces, having feet that ‘roll in or roll out’, muscular weakness or tightness, as well as wearing incorrect footwear.

How are shin splints treated?

The best outcomes for shin splints are achieved through early diagnosis and onset of treatment.

It is important patients don’t avoid treatment or push through the pain, mainly due to injury progression and the risk of stress fractures.

Treatment via a professional can help

you modify your activities and improve any mechanical issues through massage, stretching and conditioning, footwear changes and orthotic therapy. Shockwave therapy has also been found to assist in the rehabilitation process.

Pain and inflammation should be treated at home by protecting, resting, icing, using compression and elevating the limb each day before making an appointment with a practitioner.

With rest and the correct treatment, recovery from shin splints can be achieved.

However, if the underlying causes are not identified and addressed correctly, recurrence is not uncommon.

How ‘bloat’ can cause an array of complex medical problems

Bloat is the term commonly used to describe the very dangerous disease gastric dilatation and volvulus or GDV. It is typically seen in large deep chested breeds like Great Danes, German Shepherds and Boxers but any dog can potentially develop GDV. The typical presentation is a large breed dog that has just had a large meal and exercised heavily soon afterwards.

There are many other risk factors.

These include individual factors like relatives that have suffered bloat, being underweight, being male, being older and having anxiety. There has been no specific diet or ingredient proven to cause bloat. Dietary factors that have been identified to increase the risk include eating one meal a day, eating quickly, soaking dry foods, being fed from a height, having water restricted before or after eating and dry food diets with animal fat being listed in the first four ingredients. Feeding cereals like soy, wheat or corn has not been shown to increase the risk of bloat.

What happens with a GDV? The stomach distends rapidly with a large amount of gas, causing considerable pain. It is still not fully understood why, but the distended stomach then tends to rotate.

This rotation cuts off the blood supply to the stomach and traps the gas in the stomach. The spleen normally sits close to the stomach and can also become twisted and have its blood supply stopped.

The distended stomach also compresses the main vein in the abdomen that returns the body’s blood to the heart, causing shock. The distension of the stomach can cause death to the stomach tissue. This combination occurs quickly and is deadly.

How do I know if my dog has bloat?

Typically, a dog will become suddenly unwell, painful, anxious, the abdomen is obviously distended and they will often attempt to vomit but not bring anything up. Not all dogs will have the typical signs and conversely other diseases may cause similar signs. If your dog is unwell or showing any of these signs immediate veterinary assessment is recommended.

How is GDV treated?

Treatment must address the complex of problems that form GDV and be started immediately.

Decompression of the stomach is necessary to resume the blood supply to the stomach, spleen and heart. It reduces stretching of the stomach and enables the stomach to be untwisted. Decompression is normally achieved by stomach tubing but surgery may be required.

IV fluids are given at the same time to treat shock. Medications are given to

treat pain and prevent infection. Heart arrhythmias are common complications of GDV and IV medications may be required to stabilise the heart.

When is surgery indicated?

Once the patient is stabilised surgery should be performed to assess the extent of damage to the stomach and spleen.

Areas of the stomach deemed unviable need to be resected.

If the spleen is damaged it may also need to be removed. If the stomach has not been untwisted with decompression, surgical intervention is required more rapidly and the surgeon will decompress and rotate the stomach.

The next step is to perform a gastropexy.

This is a surgical procedure that secures the stomach in its normal position to the side of the body wall to prevent the stomach from twisting. Most dogs that present with GDV will rebloat without gastropexy surgery.

How do I prevent GDV in my dog?

The risk of GDV can be reduced by including canned food and table scraps in the diet, feeding two or more meals a day and reducing exercise after eating.

By far the best prevention is elective gastropexy surgery for high-risk breeds.

This is normally done at the same time as desexing. The stomach may still become distended but cannot twist and cause the complex of life threatening changes associated with GDV.

White bread and pasta probably shouldn’t be on our menu, but that doesn’t mean you should be dumping the ‘good’ grains out there...

Over the last few years we’ve seen a rise in the popularity of low-carb diets.

Along with this shift has come the demonising of grain foods, including breads, cereals and pasta.

Unfortunately, while skipping the white breads and pastas is a good thing, we as a population are missing out on many of the health benefits that come from wholegrain, high-fibre varieties.

In fact, a recent study out of the University of Wollongong has found that many of us are only getting half the whole grains and high-fibre cereal foods that our bodies need.

“Adults had an average of 6.4g cereal fibre a day, which is the equivalent of only two serves of higher fibre grain foods – just half of what many adults require,” said Eden Barrett, lead researcher and Accredited Practising Dietitian.

The current Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend four to six serves a day of grain foods.

A serve is around one slice of bread or 1/2 a cup of rice, pasta or oats.

ou’d have to be a fairly contrary soul to argue these days against the importance of the role played by climate and aspect on the quality of wine. It’s something covered generally by the French term ‘terroir’, which also includes things such as soil and vineyard layout.

A major part of ‘terroir’ is a vineyard’s altitude, something that’s closely related to climate and hence to how a wine tastes.

It’s why the best of Queensland’s wines generally come from the Granite Belt, high up in the Great Dividing Range, to the south-west of Brisbane, where vineyard altitudes generally run between about 700 and 1000 metres.

But we’re staying south of the border today, where McWilliams has just launched its new McW 480 and McW 660 Reserve ranges, with labels proudly displaying the contours of topographic maps and the numbers referring to elevation above sea level.

The McW 480 range is priced at about $20 and comprises a Hilltops Shiraz alongside a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Noir from Tumbarumba.

The McW 660 Reserve range takes it up a bit in price to about $25 and quite significantly in altitude, to vineyards averaging some 660 metres elevation.

Here we get a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from Tumbarumba, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz from Hilltops, and a Syrah from near Canberra.

Shiraz and Syrah are made from the same grape variety, with the latter generally being more savoury and European in style, the former being bolder and brasher, in the style of the big Barossa reds Australians have.

The problem with labelling all bread/ pasta/rice etc as ‘bad’ is that we are overlooking the most important factor: the quality of the grain foods we are eating.

Highly processed white breads and pastas offer little in the way of nutrition and it is advisable to reduce your intake of these foods, but their wholegrain cousins are important sources of cereal fibre.

Change and transform yourself from the inside out Heart transplants are a medical miracle, but it was Jesus who first spoke about such transformation

This year, 50 years ago in 1967, was when Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant on Louis Washkansky.

Something unthinkable had become a reality; a damaged heart replaced by a new heart!

This pioneering work was continued in Australia by Dr Victor Chang.

In particular, Dr Chang’s work received prominence in his 1984 operation on Australia’s youngest heart transplant recipient, Fiona Coote.

Still a massive operation, the breakthrough achieved by people like Dr Chang (who was sadly shot and killed in 1991) has meant the saving of many, many lives.

Today, in Australia, around 95 heart transplants are performed annually.

Jesus spoke of our need for a new heart.

In the Bible’s book of Mark, Jesus spoke to a crowd of people who thought they could live a good life by trying to look good on the outside.

Jesus challenged this, saying it is what is on the inside, in our hearts that determines who we are.

ore Australians have bought a Toyota LandCruiser than customers from any other nation, according to internal statistics from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan.

The figures show Australians account for an extraordinary 10 per cent of all LandCruisers sold around the world since the famous nameplate was first stamped in 1954.

Local LandCruiser sales have recently passed an impressive milestone of 700,000 vehicles while the global total is just shy of seven million vehicles.

LandCruiser’s 63-year history makes it the longest-serving Toyota vehicle brand, originating 12 years ahead of another longtime customer favourite, Corolla.

The local LandCruiser tally includes 370,000 workhorse vehicles, including the current 70 Series range plus 330,000 wagons including the latest “king off the road”, the 200 Series.

While annual LandCruiser sales are now topped by the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East, Australians last year still weighed in with 11.3 per cent of global sales – almost 19,000 vehicles out of a global total of more than 166,000 sales.

The all-time sales figures for the iconic off-roader do not include Prado wagons that also bear the LandCruiser name, of which more than 260,000 have been sold in Australia.

tanding at just 118cm tall, local teenager Sarah Keenahan is proving height is no barrier when it comes to excelling in sport.

Next month, the 16-year-old Leonay resident will jet off to Ontario, Canada, where she’ll compete in not one, not two but three different sports at the 2017 World Dwarf Games.

This year’s World Dwarf Games, which run from August 5 to 12, will be the largest sporting event in history held exclusively for athletes with dwarfism.

More than 600 athletes with dwarfism from around the world will descend on Guelph, near Toronto, to participate in a variety of sports including basketball, table tennis and hockey.

A champion swimmer, Sarah won’t just be showing off her talents in the pool but also in soccer and track and field.

Sarah said she was excited to take part in her very first World Dwarf Games.

“I can’t wait to get over there but I’m expecting to be very tired from competing as all my sports are clumped together,” she told the Weekender.

“First up I’ll be playing soccer for Australia before competing in five swimming events. I’ll wrap up the competition by running in the 4x100m relay.”

While Sarah is chomping at the bit to get overseas, she does require some muchneeded financial assistance to help her with her travels.

With no funding on offer from any of the governing bodies, Sarah and the rest of her Aussie teammates are forced to pay for the entire trip on their own.

Sarah is hoping to raise $3000 via a GoFundMe page to assist in her sporting endeavours.

“We don’t get any funding from Swimming Australia… we rely on sponsorship from businesses and raising our own funds,” she said.

“We’ve had to pay for our own uniform, accommodation and flights. It is annoying because we have to pay for everything out of our own pockets and it’s not the cheapest thing.”

After years of not being able to participate due to constant ear infections, the Nepean Aquatic Centre swimmer only took up the sport four years ago and impressed the moment she dived into the pool.

Last year she fell just short of making the Australian Paralympic Team for the Rio Games.

With even more experience competing in national and international meets under her belt, Sarah is aiming for Tokyo in 2020.

Meet The President

On the road to success: New facilities Penrith Cycling Club continues to be a home for riders of all ages, and there’s plenty of exciting plans NATHAN TAYLOR

The Weekender’s Meet The President series introduces you to the people in charge of our local sporting clubs. This week, we chat with the President of the Penrith Cycling Club, Keiran Hogan...

How long have you been the President of the Penrith Cycling Club for?

I’ve been President for just a year, but in total for about five years of the last 10. But importantly there’s a strong committee and a core of people – about 14 people in all – who really run the club. In that group of people are some who’ve been involved for more than 20 years, and some just a few months. Most are riders, but not all.

How long have you been involved with cycling and what were your previous roles?

I’ve been involved for about 15 years, first with mountain biking and then with road cycling.

Over that time I’ve usually contributed in some way to the sport, on one committee or another, or just as a helper at events. As with many people, I started doing things

because my kids were involved – that’s what got me into MTB and then road cycling. My family are still involved with activities in their local communities, so it’s worked out well.

As President, explain what your role entails?

We’re an incorporated association, so there’s a few things laid down in legislation – such as looking after the assets and making sure we know about and comply with all the legal requirements, plus health and safety, privacy, child protection etc.

We do a pretty good job of that, and we get support from Cycling Australia/NSW and from Fair Trading, so it’s not as hard as it probably sounds.

The everyday part of the role is to work with the management team to make sure we run good races. We run more than 30 races a year, so that’s a bit constant!

The planning part of the job is important. We race at the Regatta Centre and work with management there to plan and manage races.

Tell me about your cycling background, how did you fall in love with the sport?

I’ve been cycling and/or running for about 20 years. I came into cycling through

my son, who was into BMX at the time. It was soon clear that cycling is a sport with great health benefits and a really good social environment.

The opportunities for all types of outdoor activities here in western Sydney and the Blue Mountains are fantastic. I’ve been involved to some extent with road and mountain biking, with off-road running and with triathlons. There’s local clubs for all these activities. Some are quite structured like ours and some are just informal groups built around Facebook or Whatsapp.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing cycling locally?

Firstly, let me say there’s a difference between cycling as a competitive sport – which is mostly what our club is about – and cycling for commuting and recreation.

For commuting and recreation, the issue is mostly about cars/trucks and infrastructure and regulation. By infrastructure, I mean the design, construction and maintenance of our roads and transport networks. There are plans for these but we’ve a long way to go before riding to work or school becomes a “normal” thing to do. Our population density is increasing

rapidly, so I think this is going to become a big issue real soon. The new Nepean Bridge is a great thing and that’s for walkers/runners as well as riders.

For cycling as a competitive sport, it’s a bit different. The challenges and issues are in part the same as for commuters (safety on the roads) but a big factor is the competition from all the other sports. Plus cycling is certainly an intense endurance sport – there’s a bit of pain involved – and that means it’s not for everyone. Also it takes some experience as well as just physical training.

Cycling has been described as chess on wheels because, in most races, the tactics and strategies are important.

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

The one big improvement potential in our area is developing an area for longcourse off-road competitive cycling. The Penrith Lakes area is an obvious location – there’s potentially a 20km off-road circuit available there in the next few years and that would be a drawcard for cyclists from all over Sydney and NSW. If a good off-road circuit is developed then it would certainly attract national and even international level events.

Local clubs like ours, together with local and state governments, need to do more work in this area to get the right outcomes.

Are you happy with the amount of Local and State Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

At club level we don’t rely on any government funding but our club is very well supported by our three fantastic sponsors: Midway Metals, the Bike Shop of Castle Hill and Danny Le Gatt Cycling Tours.

They provide funds for development programs and importantly they support our riders competing in state, national and international competitions.

The local government funding potential is probably there now, and that funding is required to maintain specialised facilities such as the Regatta Centre, to build and maintain the overall community infrastructure (road, bridges, parks etc), and to build new core infrastructure such as the off-road cycling course mentioned above.

I think the challenge is to develop and fund a plan at community level to get the

big projects underway. We can’t wait for another Olympic Games to develop our community and sporting infrastructure.

There are always plenty of success stories about cycling in the Western Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

Right now we’re both excited and proud for lots of reasons but especially the results from club members Amanda Spratt and Stephen Cuff.

Amanda has had a really great season in Europe, and has just finished fifth in the Giro Rosa. The racing has been very exciting, arguably more exciting this year than the men’s racing.

Stephen is one of our club’s great young riders and has been invited to represent Australia at the World Track Championships in Italy later this year.

How many registered members does the Penrith Cycling Club currently have and how do you plan to grow the sport?

We have nearly 250 members at present, so we are definitely one of the largest clubs in NSW. We run races on most weeks of the year, always at the Regatta Centre.

Wanderers add international flair to squad for new season

Emus remain focused despite back to back heartbreakers

he Western Sydney Wanderers continue to boost their roster ahead of the upcoming A-League season after signing international striker Oriol Riera for the next two years.

The 31-year-old Catalan joins the Wanderers as a marquee player from La Liga side Deportivo de La Coruna, having spent last season on-loan at fellow Spanish side Osasuna.

A product of FC Barcelona’s famous La Masia youth academy and a former teammate of superstar Lionel Messi, Riera arrives in western Sydney having netted four times in La Liga for Osasuna last season, including a fantastic header against UEFA Champions League holders Real Madrid.

Noted for his finishing, aerial ability and strong physical appearance, Riera arrived in town last week and has since joined his teammates for pre-season training as they prepare to face Arsenal this Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the Spaniard’s signing gives the club an added boost for the upcoming season.

“We are very excited to have a player of Oriol’s calibre join us for the next two seasons,” he said.

The Wanderers have had mixed luck with marquee signings in the past with Japanese star Shinji Ono impressing in his two seasons while Italian striker Federico Piovaccari failed to get selected most weeks.

The new season begins in October.

t’s been a heartbreaking couple of weeks for the luckless Penrith Emus Shute Shield side, losing back to back games by the slimmest of margins.

Last Saturday, during their annual Back to Penrith day clash against Parramatta, the Emus led at half-time, only to fall to their western Sydney rivals 33-28.

It was a similar tale the week prior too, with the ever improving Emus going down at the death to eighth-placed Gordon 36-30.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team remain winless after six rounds, going down to the Central Coast Heart 52-43 in Round 6 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition.

Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s are back in business, smashing the Heart 58-36. Both teams will take on North Shore United in Round 7.

The Primary Classroom Program at Panthers on the Prowl has been running continuously for 15 years. We serve local primary schools to assist in the development of social and emotional learning targeted at small groups. Each week we nominate a student of the week from a participating school to highlight their efforts..

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers are finally back in the winner’s circle, defeating the Bankstown Bruins 90-78 in Round 17 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

Joel Klein top scored for Penrith with 21 points. The Panthers will aim for a string of wins this weekend when they battle the Maitland Mustangs and Sydney Comets in a double header. Meanwhile, after enjoying last weekend off due to a bye, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team will return to the court this Sunday against the Central Coast Crusaders. The match is set to be a beauty!

This week’s student of the week is Kyton Goolagong. Kyton attends Penrith Public School and has enjoyed doing hand drumming at Panthers on the Prowl. The staff involved with the Primary Program have undergone training in the DRUMBEAT program.

This term we were able to run some taster lessons and Kyton was keen and enthusiastic. Later this year Panthers on the Prowl students will complete the whole 10 week program culminating in a small performance for their parents.

The DRUMBEAT program aims to teach students about beliefs, attitudes, emotions and thoughts through the power of music. Great job Kyton!

Emus coach Julian Huxley said despite the obvious improvement, it’s been a tough couple of weeks.

“We should have won both games but given where we have come from, we’re learning,” he said.

“It’s been heartbreaking… the boys worked so bloody hard that I was disappointed for them rather than in them.”

This Saturday the Emus will continue to chase their first win when they face an in-form West Harbour side, who are currently on a three-game winning streak, at Nepean Rugby Park.

Despite the close defeats, Huxley expects his side to be fully focused this weekend.

RUGBY: For the second straight week Penrith have come agonisingly close to winning their first game of the year, only to lose to crosstown rivals Parramatta 33-28 in Round 14 of the Shute Shield competition. The Emus led by three at half-time before heartbreak reared its ugly head again in the second half, with the Two Blues coming back to seal victory and spoil Penrith’s party. This Saturday afternoon the Emus will return to

Nepean Rugby Park to take on West Harbour at 3pm.

AUSSIE RULES: After a one-point loss the previous week, the Penrith Rams are well and truly back in business, defeating Sydney University 116-2 in Round 13 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. Mitchell Stevens top scored with nine goals for the Rams.

Penrith will take on the Wollondilly Knights this Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Oval. Meanwhile, the Auburn-Penrith Giants weren’t able to string back to back wins together, losing to Macquarie University 36-24 in Round 12 of the AFL Sydney Premier Women’s Division competition. Kate Easthope kicked two goals for the Giants. The Giants will battle UTS Shamrocks this Saturday afternoon at Mona Park.

AFL: For the second straight week, the GWS Giants have played out another thrilling draw, this time against Hawthorn in Tasmania.

Despite trailing by 15 heading into the fourth, the Giants hit the lead late in the final term before the Hawks’ Will Langford kicked a late goal to even the scores at 97-97. This Saturday night the Giants will face the Sydney Swans at Spotless Stadium.

t wasn’t that long ago that a match-up between the GWS Giants and Sydney Swans would have an obvious outcome.

But these days – with the Giants a force to be reckoned with in the AFL – things have changed dramatically.

This Saturday night at Spotless Stadium the two top eight teams will do battle in the 13th edition of the famous crosstown rivalry.

Speaking at a joint media conference this week, both coaches were thrilled at just how big the derby has become.

“From our perspective, it was only going to build over time,” Swans coach John Longmire said.

Giants coach Leon Cameron agreed, saying while it’s taken a while to build, his side finally has what it takes to challenge the Swans.

“It is real now, it’s probably taken five years for us to become more competitive and there has been layers added to it each year with us stepping up to the mark and playing a more consistent brand [of footy],” he said.
