ore and more young Penrith residents are staying at home with mum and dad into their late 20s and early 30s as the classic ‘Great Australian Dream’ of home ownership continues to die.

And those who aren’t staying at home are choosing to rent instead of buy, finding it difficult to ever imagine that they’ll be able to save for a deposit as house prices soar out of control.

Even with recent stamp duty exemptions announced by the State Government, the prices of property itself in western Sydney is forcing locals to re-think the dream of home ownership.

In the Lindsay electorate, Census data reveals that there are 3,806 young adults aged 25 to 34 living at home as they struggle to thrive financially.

And the percentage of renters is also increasing, with some youngsters saying they’d prefer to rent without the pressure of home ownership and a mortgage.

PENRITH A NEW URBAN VILLAGE?

What is it we so love about Penrith? Is it our sporting and cultural opportunities? Is it the Nepean river and the green spaces, the lakes and foothills of the Blue Mountains? Is it our rich history, our dynamic approach to life, our community?

Our city was mainly agricultural when the first District Council for Penrith was appointed almost 175 years ago. But with the Great Western Road, and the railway, residents eventually had access to major markets.

So the area expanded and developed, introducing new industries to support and grow the community and the local economy.

At that time we would have been considered to be a growing village.

Today the Gross Regional Product generated by businesses, organisations and individuals working in the Penrith area is around $8,983m.

We’ve come a long way since 1843. But are we still a village?

In many ways, yes we are. Or at least we’re aspiring to be ‘an urban village’ again. We are pushing for major road upgrades and railways to support our current and future growth.

We want to ensure that tomorrow’s generations can look back on Penrith as a flourishing city which took advantage of the opportunities of the day.

An urban village has good public transport, walking and cycling, great public spaces. It offers opportunities for people to work and live in the same area, and to take advantage of local entertainment and active lifestyles.

Real Festival In many ways, it’s back to the future. Many of the things we reflect on and admire about the past are the things we still want today. That sense of community and connection.

In coming months and years Penrith City will change. This is not a new thing, we have been growing and changing since at least 1843. I know that together we will meet the challenges and reap the benefits.

Hopefully 175 years into the future our city will be recognised as having been courageous and bold and delivering on an urban village which stands the test of time.

Kids settle in for long stay at home Great Australian Dream slowly dying as house prices become out of reach for young locals EMILY NEWTON

ensus data reveals that housing affordability remains out of reach for young Australians, as 25 to 34-year-olds are living at home for longer while more people are simultaneously forced to rent instead of buy.

Glenmore Park’s Denise Mejia is one of the rising group of adults who can’t afford to leave home.

“Both my partner and I live at home with our parents,” she said.

“We’re pretty lucky that our parents are allowing us to live with them.”

Ms Mejia, 27, and her partner, 29, are trying to save for their first home.

She says they are both lucky to find themselves in good career positions, but know that many of their friends are unable to live at home, or struggle to find a solution to the rising cost of living in western Sydney.

“I think the ‘smashed avo’ argument is a bit silly. I don’t eat avocado and I’m still struggling,” Ms Mejia laughed.

Housing Affordability Expert Robert Snell believes the younger generation is being “robbed blind”.

“Sydney is on measure, the second most

expensive city in the world, Hong Kong is first,” Mr Snell said.

“If you go back 30 or 40 years ago, it was four times a salary to buy a house. It’s now 12 times.”

Andrew Evans, another young adult from Penrith, said he has no plans to buy a house anytime soon.

“I don’t see the point, why spend the rest of my life paying off a thing I can pay less for if I just rent it,” he said.

“If the market changed drastically or I win Lotto I would probably buy a house but at this point I’ve just accepted that I’ll always rent where I want to live.”

Census data revealed that in the Penrith Local Government Area, renters have jumped from 26.7 per cent in 2011 to 30.2 per cent in 2016.

At the same time, the percentage of people who own their home outright remains almost unchanged while the number of people who own through a mortgage has fallen from 43.8 per cent to 40.7 per cent.

Life isn’t easy. Get used to it.

The great thing about junior sport is that it teaches kids an array of life skills from an early age including team work, preparation and the inevitable ups and downs that are certain to come.

Which is why a decision by the Riddell District Football League in Victoria to cap margins in matches and not record the feats of top goalkickers is so utterly ludicrous and just plain dumb.

In another example of our cotton wool society, obsessed with protecting our children from the realities of life, the League has introduced a rule mid-way through the season to cap Aussie Rules margins at 80 points for under 16s matches, 60 points in under 14s and 48 points in under 12s.

Top goalkickers and the best players will not be recorded on the club’s website, because why would you honour those who have achieved great things?

Riddell District Football Club calls this an “equalisation policy”.

Oh please.

Every one of those kids in their early teenage years are just around the corner from the inevitable roller coaster that is life, and every roller coaster has downs.

They will experience heartbreak, missing out on that dream job and perhaps not getting a mark in a test they were hoping for. While disappointing and at times even devastating, it all makes us stronger and more determined no matter what the issue.

We need to be teaching our kids that sometimes you not only lose, but you lose hard. And we need to be teaching them that yes, there are probably people better than you at something.

We need to stop isolating our kids away from the realities of winning and losing. I don’t care what anyone with a clipboard or university degree says – it’s doing more harm than good.

Hypocrite or game changer?

Man hater Clementine Ford was at it again last week, this time complaining (as she often does) about the negative feedback she receives from the dribble she writes.

You see Ford has lost relevance over the years because what are often good arguments are lost in her over the top rants that essentially blame men for all of the planet’s problems and portray a ‘poor me’ world in which Clementine is the victim.

My pet hate is opinion columnists who complain about the abuse they cop as a result of said opinions. Nobody is saying it is deserved, and I am sure some of the

comments Ford receives are disgraceful, but it unfortunately comes with the territory (even when it comes to the local newspaper Editor!). Everyone in the public space cops it, they just don’t always complain about it.

If there are serious threats, they should be referred directly to police – not used as fodder for the next column.

Jason Morrison, the current News Director at Channel 7, spoke on a podcast recently about the enormous number of threats he received when he was at 2GB. It is an awful part of the job.

Such threats are not uncommon and certainly have nothing to do with your sex.

Clementine Ford seems to think she is the leader of a crusade; unfortunately the way she speaks about others means she is more of a hypocrite than a game changer.

The real issue confronting London Forget Brexit and terrorism, for some the biggest issue in London is the fact that public transport patrons are addressed as “ladies and gentlemen”.

Such is the enormity of this issue, Transport for London has actually replaced the traditional welcome (believed to have its origins in the 16th century) with a “gender-neutral alternative”.

“Good morning everyone” is apparently the new greeting. I presume I can complain if my morning has in fact not been good.

Have we really become so precious that a term as simple as “ladies and gentlemen” is deemed offensive? And what do we say to those who feel its removal is equally offensive? Suck it up, I guess.

olunteer organisations providing free meals and other mobile homelessness support services on Council land will now have to comply with structured regulations aimed at increasing safety and easing tensions within the community and local businesses.

Under the enhanced policy, existing organisations as well as prospective providers must show evidence of public liability insurance, how it will manage litter and waste, as well as demonstrate risk management plans for emergencies and working with people with complex needs, in order to secure approval to operate on Council land.

Councillor Aaron Duke, who along with his fellow Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the new framework last week, said he realised a consistent policy was needed when Penrith hairdressers Flicks at the Funky Barber approached him with a plan to put their clippers and skills to charitable use.

“I think it’s great and timely that this comes up,” he said.

“Homelessness is a problem in Penrith, as we know, and anything Council can do to help the homeless community in Penrith will always have my support.”

Councillors mostly agreed the policy would improve service delivery and manage a range of public health and community concerns.

“I think it’s a good thing to be looking at creating some boundaries,” Councillor Mark Davies said.

“Some [organisations] are very professional and some are flying by the seat of their pants.”

But Councillor Marcus Cornish feared over-regulation could interfere with the good work already being done to tackle homelessness.

“I don’t want them driven away by a bureaucratic situation,” he said.

It is hoped the new blueprint will also encourage local organisations to distribute their services more broadly to capture areas such as St Marys Town Centre and surrounds, which remain chronically under serviced.

10 per cent of people who regularly use local outreach services are estimated to be rough sleepers, while other attendees are disadvantaged residents experiencing significant cost of living challenges.

The policy is expected to be re-evaluated in 12 months time.

Hard working Gen Research proves young business owners are putting TROY DODDS

mall business owners aged 18 to 34 are working longer hours and taking less leave than any other age demographic, suggesting the mud often thrown at young workers isn’t sticking.

New research by NRMA Business Insurance shows Millennials and Gen Ys shouldn’t be written off, with the results set to shift the stereotype that younger Australians aren’t prepared to put in the hard yards.

Millennial and Gen Y business owners were also the most ambitious and driven demographic, and were more likely to say they started a business to follow their passion.

The research found more than a quarter (27 per cent) of small business owners aged 18-34 are working more than 50 hours each week, compared to 24 per cent of small business owners aged 55 and over.

More than two thirds (70 per cent) are taking less than two weeks’ holiday each year, compared to 49 per cent of small business owners aged 55 and over, while 43 per cent said they want to dominate their industry, become a household name, or earn as much money as possible, compared to just a fifth (21 per cent) of older small business owners who share the same ambitions.

“We know Millennials are like no generation before them, seeking job environments that offer flexibility, autonomy and a sense of purpose, as well as the creative freedom to grow and move around,” said Amanda Whiting, Executive General Manager of Small Business for NRMA Business Insurance.

“While this often wrongly lands Millennials the reputation as fickle or entitled, it is these qualities, coupled with Gen Ys and Millennials being the most ambitious and tech-savvy generations, which makes younger people well-suited to running their own business.”

The research also revealed that in western Sydney, 16 per cent of small business owners are working more than 60 hours a week.

Owner of Penrith business Urban Painting & Decorating, Richard Rossetto, said plenty of young people are following their dreams and working for themselves.

“In today’s world, working for yourself is actually the safer route,” he said.

“Build your own job security, your own business identity and most of all surround yourself with likeminded people who encourage you to build yourself personally.

“If you love what you do like I do, you create a passion, not a job. If you don’t build your dream, someone will hire you to build theirs.”

The 2017/2018 Community Assistance Program will open on Monday, 24 July 2017 and close on Monday, 21 August 2017.

● Works have commenced on stage one of the shared footpath in Tench Reserve. It involves the re-alignment and upgrade of approximately 210 metres of footpath from Jamison Road heading south towards the M4.

Intention to Repeal the Development Contributions Plan (S94 Plan) for Erskine Business Park The purpose of this Notice is to advise the community of Council’s intention to repeal the Development Contributions Plan for Erskine Business Park, as resolved by Council at its meeting of 30 September 2013. Repealing the Plan was delayed due to contribution credits for the estate associated with the NSW Government’s Special Infrastructure Contributions program.

The Contributions Plan (also known as a Section 94 Plan) is being repealed because the facilities and infrastructure funded by the Plan for Erskine Business Park have now been delivered.

he local sporting community is mourning the passing of Trevor Wholohan, who died earlier this

week.

While Mr Wholohan was known for his passion for cricket in the local area, he was also a Trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

He was also the Western Weekender’s cricket columnist for many years.

Off the field, Mr Wholohan was a butcher by trade and operated his own shop with his wife Patricia on High Street in Penrith.

His involvement in cricket saw him hold various positions of president, board and life member at the Penrith District Cricket Club, Nepean District Cricket Association and Cricket NSW. Mr Wholohan became the NSW representative on the Australian Cricket Board in 1988, and in 1997, was awarded an OAM for his service to cricket administration at club, district and state levels.

In 2000, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for 27 years voluntary service to club and junior cricket administration in the Penrith area.

The function room at Howell Oval in Penrith is named in his honour.

Trevor Wholohan is being remembered as a passionate supporter of local cricket Former Cricket NSW CEO and current SCG Trustee, David Gilbert paid tribute to Mr Wholohan for his contribution to the sport.

“He served the game for more than 60 years and always had the interests of cricket at heart,” Mr Gilbert said.

“While he held very prominent roles for both the ACB and Cricket NSW, Trevor always remained the strongest of advocates for the Greater West and was always promoting the needs of sport in Penrith and beyond.”

Tax Office is keeping it clean The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is increasing attention, scrutiny and education on work-related expenses this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year over 6.3 million people made a work-related expense claim for clothing and laundry expenses, totalling almost $1.8 billion.

“We have seen claims for clothing and laundry expenses increase around 20 per cent over the last five years. While this increase isn’t a sign that all of these taxpayers are doing the wrong thing, it is giving us a reason to pay extra attention,” she said.

Ms Anderson said common mistakes the ATO has seen include people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the money, and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated.

“I heard a story recently about a taxpayer purchasing everyday clothes who was told by the sales assistant that they could claim a deduction for the clothing if they also wore them to work,” Ms Anderson said.

“This is not the case. You can’t claim a deduction for everyday clothing you bought to wear to work, even if your employer tells you to wear a certain colour or you have a dress code.

“For your clothing to be eligible for a deduction, it needs to be occupationspecific clothing, protective clothing or a uniform that is unique to the organisation you work for.”

hile women have made leaps and bounds across the world in recent decades, a number of key indicators continue to leave them significantly behind their male counterparts.

A complex issue our society faces, Member for Mulgoa and Minister for Women Tanya Davies is urging the public to identify challenges faced by women.

“There is still a gap between men and women’s financial status, workforce participation, caring and family responsibilities and vulnerability to violence, among other issues,” she said.

The NSW Government is working on the state’s first Women’s Strategy to tackle these issues in a bid to improve equality and equity for women having already held open consultations for people to discuss the issues that affect them.

“It almost didn’t matter what age group was speaking at the time, but the common thread that resonates with so many women was this challenge that we face that we just don’t have the level of self belief and confidence that we need to go out and take on the world,” Ms Davies told the Weekender.

Ms Davies acknowledged a number of economic challenges women face, including a rising cohort of older women facing homelessness after lives dedicated to raising a family.

In the event of family breakdown, many women discover they don’t have adequate superannuation to support themselves into retirement.

“There are challenges wherever you look, but I’m always looking with hope and optimism about what else we can do,” she said.

“We can’t just accept it is the way that it is, we have to keep pushing.”

Ms Davies said she did not get into politics to become a Minister, but feels incredibly honoured for the opportunity to make a bigger difference across the state after being promoted to Cabinet.

“Having the chance to meet so many stakeholders and advocacy groups and learn about the unique challenges in certain areas of the community that I wasn’t aware of before because I wasn’t in this position is an incredible honour but also a huge responsibility,” Ms Davies said.

Her first day as Minister for Women saw Ms Davies reveal she was “personally prolife” during a press conference that sent the media into a flurry.

“I will heartily disagree with people on certain issues, but that’s what democracy is”

She has since reiterated that she supports a woman’s right to choose the path that is best for them when it comes to pregnancy.

“I will heartily disagree with people on certain issues, but that’s what democracy is,” she said.

“Where I stand with my personal faith is that it enhances my ability to serve and to help and be empathetic, to be passionate, to stand up for injustices and to fight for what is right.

“With time comes wisdom and understanding in knowing that people are different to you and being able to accept that and then productively engage with these people.

“At the end of the day, diversity is quite powerful.”

Ms Davies argues that this acceptance and understanding of diversity is needed to reach gender equality.

She is urging both men and women to make a contribution to the survey as the results will be considered during the development of the NSW Women’s Strategy, to be released later this year and will potentially lead to major changes in direction.

Man went into “text rage” when he discovered relationship

A man who sent a slew of text messages threatening to kill his best mate after he found out he and his wife were lovers was not suffering from mental illness at the time, a magistrate has determined.

The man, who applied to have his matter dealt with under the Mental Health Act, sent a tirade of texts to the victim following the discovery, Penrith Local Court heard.

But Magistrate Roger Clisdell disagreed with a psychiatrist’s determination that he was suffering from an “adjustment disorder with depressive features” at the time of his marriage breakdown.

“Would I be depressed? Absolutely,” he said.

“That doesn’t mean you can excuse your behaviour.”

Magistrate Clisdell said if the offender had just sent one text he could possibly blame it on a loss of control disorder but the fact is he went “on and on and on”.

“In quite explicable fashion, he just lost it... he got into a rage,” he said during his sentencing remarks.

He said in this day and age, every problem is “explained away” by another issue.

“No one takes responsibility for their actions anymore,” he lamented.

He suggested writing a letter and throwing it away was a better way to “let off steam” in the future, noting people were often too quick to hit send, which was a “recipe for disaster”.

The man was convicted and fined $600.

No sympathy: Magistrate sends woman to jail over contraband

An inmate busted with secreted contraband after she took receipt of drugs and tobacco from a visiting relative has earned herself more time in the slammer.

Cheryl Lee Jones, 45, who was at liberty following a separate appeal, became highly distressed and cried as the reality of her fate sank in when she faced Penrith Local Court for sentencing last Thursday.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell found while Jones may have indeed been “stood over” and was under “significant duress” from other inmates as her lawyer submitted, in his view anything less than full time custody would go against his duty to the public.

“If she accepts the duress of others she has to take responsibility for what she has done,” he said.

“I’m sure Ms Jones knew it was seriously risky.”

CCTV captures the offender, who was being held at Dillwynia Correctional Centre, Berkshire Park at the time, accepting a yellow plastic container containing some tobacco, diazepam tablets and two strips of buprenorphine all wrapped in separate cling film, which she proceeded to secrete it in her vagina.

The court heard two days after the February offence, Jones faced the District Court for a severity appeal where her original six-month sentence was reduced to a Section 9 good behaviour bond.

Magistrate Clisdell said he doubted the Judge would have been aware of the fresh incidents.

He said allowing prisoners to be let off because they were being physically dominated was “sending the wrong message”, citing the recent emergence of mobile phone footage filmed by a Parklea prisoner showing off a knife, razor and ‘ice’ as a “stark example”.

“It seems to me general deterrence looms very, very large,” he said.

Jones, who has a longstanding history of drug abuse, was sentenced to eight months jail with a non-parole period of six months, but is expected to appeal.

Police find woman hiding in wardrobe at Kingswood house

A woman with outstanding arrest warrants found hiding in a wardrobe has been given a number of good behaviour bonds to “get her out of the system”.

Stephanie Grant appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link last Thurs-

day after being discovered when police attended a Stanley Crescent, Kingswood address on a separate matter.

The 23-year-old was wanted for two counts of ‘damage property’, ‘breach of bond’ and ‘failing to appear’.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said it would be prudent to finalise the matters rather than grant her bail and find she doesn’t turn up to court again.

“She can turn up to Community Corrections or she can go to jail,” he said.

“Understand?” he said firmly to the offender.

She was given a number of 12-month Section 9 bonds with a condition that she accept Community Corrections’ supervision.

“Let’s just get her out of the system,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

Goat and a fence at centre of neighbourhood spat

A neighbourhood dispute over a goat which allegedly keeps knocking down a fence will be played out in court after the parties failed to come to an agreement.

Beau Niha fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after serving a fencing notice on Chris Casey.

Niha told the court he had served a number of fencing notices on the couple, but while he had evidence of the first, his goat ate the second.

It is understood the disagreement centres on whether to use wood or Colourbond for the fence.

“It’s only a $300 difference, I’ve got the quotes,” said Niha, who would prefer Colourbond.

“We can’t afford it anyway... we’re pensioners,” Mrs Casey shouted out.

“Unfortunately that’s not a defence,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said.

A hearing to determine the outcome is scheduled for August 29.

Man avoids jail over frightening domestic violence incident A Kingswood man who pushed his

partner face first onto the Great Western Highway in the heat of a drunken row has avoided jail.

Darren Hamilton, 46, appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

The court heard the pair were walking home from the pub when their fight escalated, with the offender shoving the victim in the back causing her to fall uncontrollably face forward onto the bitumen.

She was rescued by two witnesses who rushed to her aid and lifted her to her feet and the safety of the nature strip.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell found Hamilton’s loss of control could be partially explained by the accused’s pituitary gland tumour.

“That’s why you’re not going to jail,” he told the disability pensioner.

“If I’m wrong about that, we’ll find out... through reports,” he warned.

He was ordered to enter a two-year Section 9 good behaviour bond and comply with supervision, including directions to attend domestic violence and drug and alcohol programs as well as a referral to a psychiatrist.

The victim, who is also his carer, was in court in support.

Double trouble as suspended driver is caught speeding

Mark Nashaat Halim Habib has taken a nasty blow to his hip pocket after pleading guilty to two traffic offences.

The Cambridge Park resident fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after the suspended driver was nabbed in the early hours doing 70km/h in a 50km/h zone on the way to the gym.

“You shouldn’t have been driving and then you speed so you’re an idiot twice in one day,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell scolded the uni student.

He was hit with a $750 fine and ordered to enter a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Cranebrook: Lucky escape as bus drives through red light

A prang between a bus and a four-wheel drive during the Tuesday morning commute was lucky to result in no injuries.

The bus, which was unoccupied aside from the driver at the time, was travelling along the Northern Road, Cranebrook on July 18.

Around 7am, the bus has run through a red light and collided with the four-wheel drive.

As a precaution, the driver of the four-wheel drive was taken to Nepean Hospital for tests.

The incident was taken over by Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and an infringement notice was issued to the driver of the bus.

Cranebrook: Man caught after stealing elderly woman’s car

An emergency necklace has not only provided peace of mind, but helped catch a criminal following a break and enter last week.

At 4.10am on Friday, July 14 a 92-yearold woman was woken up by her house alarm on Church Lane, Cranebrook.

She discovered that the power to her home and been turned off and her phone line was dead.

Through the window, she noticed what seemed like a torchlight moving around.

She activated the emergency necklace she was wearing, and police were called to her home.

When officers arrived, it was discovered that her car had been stolen.

As a result of the break in, police were in the process of taking the woman to a nearby family member when they observed what appeared to be the woman’s car parked on Cranebrook Road.

Next to the car stood a 36-year-old man from Cranebrook.

Police approached and questioned the man, who was then arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

He was charged with 10 offences includ-

ing traffic matters, ‘larceny’ and ‘goods in custody’.

He was originally bail refused and faced court on July 15 and is set to next appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, July 24.

Penrith: Security guards catch man who nabbed sunglasses

Keen eyed security guards have caught a spec-tacular thief before he had the vision to leave the crime scene.

A 21-year-old man from Winmalee was walking through level two of the Westfield Penrith shops within the area closed off to the public.

The man walked around Sunglasses Hut where he attempted to unsuccessfully open the drawers at the shop to access the sunglasses.

After numerous attempts with no success, the man eventually opened a drawer. He removed nine pairs of glasses with a combined total value of over $3,000.

He placed the glasses in his pockets and tried to walk away.

The man was then approached by security, who saw the price tags of glasses poking out the top of his pocket.

When the man was asked to remove his jacket by security, he became hostile.

The man was detained until police arrived and then taken to Penrith Police Station.

He was charged with ‘larceny’ and will appear in court next month.

Locals heading to festival urged to be careful

Police are urging festival-goers to plan their trip ahead of time and stay safe ahead of this weekend’s Splendour in the Grass festival.

A high-visibility police operation will be in place for the three-day festival, involving police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, assisted by general duties officers from across the Northern Region.

Right of Residence A Right of Residence is a lesser right than a Life Estate. Essentially a Right of Residence constitutes a licence to use a property. A Right of Residence is usually for a specific period of time as opposed to existing for the life of the beneficiary.

magistrate has unloaded on a local road rage perpetrator, telling him he would lock him up for as long as he could if he repeated his “terrifying” behaviour.

Penrith Local Court heard the violent incident was sparked when Werrington’s Siaki Sua, 40, became “infuriated” after a male driver allegedly cut him off at Cranebrook at about 8.30pm on Wednesday, May 3.

Court documents reveal the fatherof-three was travelling southbound on The Northern Road with his teenage son when he ambushed the victim, who had moved into the right hand lane and was waiting to turn right onto Coreen Avenue.

When the victim grabbed his phone off the dash and began filming Sua, he demanded he hand over his phone, “grabbing him by the arms and hitting him with force” when he repeatedly refused to comply.

car in a rage again, I’ll lock you up for as long as I can,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said after handing him a six-month suspended sentence.

“I’ve done you no favours, you’re in custody now. Breach your bond and it’s six months jail, there’s no non-parole, it’s a fixed term.”

Magistrate Clisdell said it was one thing to shout abuse at somebody from the comfort of your own car, but it was another to open the door of someone’s vehicle in a threatening manner.

Once Sua drove off, numerous bystanders approached the victim and independent witnesses also attended Penrith Police Station to report the incident.

Meanwhile, about 9pm on the same date, Sua attended St Marys Police Station to hand in the mobile phone, which also housed a number of personal cards and identification, none of which were missing.

He claimed he was a victim of a road rage incident and that he had been filmed by the offender, which was illegal in his native Samoa, and therefore taken his mobile phone.

“Enough is enough”: Habitual driving offender refused bail ALENA HIGGINS

mortgage broker facing his fourth driving while banned charge in 12 months has been denied bail after a magistrate found him to be “totally incapable” of complying with court orders.

Yordan Lazanov Kirov fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday via video link after he was nabbed behind the wheel again on July 12.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell queried how he could be satisfied he wouldn’t strike again, noting he had little regard for public safety having notched up a whopping 21 speeding offences.

“Not only does he drive while disqualified, he speeds every time he drives, just about,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

His lawyer argued he was capable of controlling a vehicle, having previously legally held his licence.

“But he’s speeding!” an incredulous Magistrate Clisdell said.

“He doesn’t give a hoot about the driving requirements... and he keeps driving while disqualified!”

Penrith Local Court heard Kirov’s downward spiral began in September 2015 when he was stripped of his licence after being clocked more than 45km/h over the speed limit.

He had been caught behind the wheel five times since then, with another charge pending, the court heard.

Magistrate Clisdell said there comes a time when “enough is enough”.

“I can’t think of any bail conditions to protect the public. There’s a thing called a taxi and a thing called Uber,” he said.

“It won’t happen again,” Kirov pleaded.

“No it won’t happen again because I’m refusing bail,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

He formally entered a guilty plea to the fresh charge and will be sentenced on August 25.

ocals gathered in Jordan Springs on Tuesday for a morning of stories, friendship and laughter for the first Story Time for kids at Livvi’s Place.

In a celebration of inclusion, the event was launched by local Federal Member and disability advocate Emma Husar, who read the first story.

“It was a privilege to help launch Story Time at the fabulous Livvi’s Place Jordan Springs,” Ms Husar said.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to share stories at a great inclusive playground.”

Touched by Olivia, a registered charity, aims to create inclusion through play resulting in happier and healthier lives for our children.

Each Livvi’s Place provides a unique environment for children of all ages and all abilities to play side by side.

The Story Time events will continue every week at 10am on Tuesdays thanks to a grant from Council. Locals are invited to take part in a craft session and enjoy a story in the inclusive playground.

Plastic bags gone forever Supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles have announced they will no longer offer single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags in their stores.

A rollout of the plan is expected to be completed in the next 12 months.

Woolworths announced the plan last Friday with Coles quickly following their rival’s announcement with one of their own. Harris Farm also announced its intention to phase out plastic bag use.

“As a Group we are committed to listening to our customers and also doing the right thing for the environment, and we feel this is an issue we need to take a stand on,” Woolworths Group CEO, Brad Banducci said.

“We currently give out more than 3.2 billion lightweight plastic bags a year and hence can play a significant role in reducing overall plastic bag usage. Today’s commitment shows we are committed to taking our environmental and community responsibilities seriously.

“Whilst we know this is a major decision, we will work very closely with all of our store teams to ensure the transition for our customers is as simple as possible.”

Coles hasn’t updated the ‘news’ section of its website in more than six months, but Chief Customer Officer Simon McDowell said the company had been working towards the announcement for some time. “(This decision is) part of our ongoing program to improve environmental outcomes throughout our business,” he said.

Creative locals show compassion Organisers say response to knitting challenge was overwhelming EMILY NEWTON

his winter, The Creative Fringe set a challenge to locals to knit a square to go towards warm blankets to help our homeless.

In true Penrith style, the community embraced the challenge and went above and beyond expectations, with an outstanding 1842 squares knitted over six weeks, which made a total of 49 blankets.

Last week the blankets were donated to Mama Lana’s Community Foundation where they will be carefully distributed to community members in need.

“We were thinking that we were probably going to get about five completed blankets, and that would have been amazing. This is just the next level,” The Creative Fringe Community Manager, Rienna Kroh said.

The volume of squares knitted was so overwhelming that The Creative Fringe hosted a sewing bee where volunteers came together to help sew the squares into blankets.

“It was really humbling, somebody referred to it as chicken soup for the soul,” Ms Kroh said.

“It’s bringing complete strangers together for one cause, for one heartfelt goal.”

“These will be for our domestic violence victims,” she said.

Ms Borg said that many people fleeing from domestic violence leave with nothing except the clothes on their back, and the not-for-profit organisation is contacted daily with requests for help.

She believes the blankets, knitted with compassion by caring locals, will provide more than just warmth to domestic violence victims through their one of a kind designs.

The Creative Fringe has already started planning next year’s challenge where they will encourage locals to sew or crochet plastic bags together to make waterproof mats for the homeless.

I have just read your article on the impending changes to parking in High Street Penrith (Weekender July 14). Let me say that I have lived in the Penrith and surrounding area for the last 50 years and seen a lot of changes in that time and in my opinion this is one of the dumber ones I can remember. In its wisdom, Penrith Council made the decision to close High Street and it was turned into a pedestrian plaza and all traffic and parking was re-routed to Henry Street, well we all know what happened then. The strip turned into a ghost town with many businesses closing down because of lack of trade and all the empty shops almost sent High Street to the wall. So here we go again, there is talk of turning the area between High and Henry Streets into a park like area for pedestrians, never mind how anyone gets there and can’t park now, they want to take more parking away and penalise the rest of the shopping precinct to accommodate a small number of restaurants that don’t have enough space.

Messy movies I attend Hoyts Penrith theatre on a regular basis and am amazed and disgusted at the behaviour of the majority of people with regard to disposing unwanted food and rubbish by throwing it on the floor when they leave the theatre.

The main culprit being popcorn. Why do people purchase a huge bucket of popcorn that is filled over the top of the container so that when they walk up the stairs the top contents spill out onto the floor leaving an unsightly mess? When they leave the theatre after the movie the half empty container is left on the floor and the surrounding area is strewn with popcorn and other food items. This would certainly be an attraction for any rodent, especially the food items that stays logged in between the seats.

Doctor faces one of his biggest ever challenges EMMA KOCBEK

reezing temperatures, 32 kilometres and over 13 hours of swimming is what Dr Stuart Lane is preparing to face when he swims the English Channel to raise money for Nepean Hospital.

The 44-year-old doctor, who works in the Intensive Care Unit at Nepean Hospital, has been preparing for the past 12 months for the gruelling swim.

“I’ve been doing between 40 and 50 kilometres a week for the past six months and before that 40 kilometres a week for the previous six months,” he said.

While most of us have been trying to avoid Sydney’s colder weather, Dr Lane has been embracing it as part of his training routine.

“I’ve been going to Bondi and swimming between four and six hours in Bondi up and down the actual bay just to acclimatise to the cold,” he said.

As well as physical exhaustion, battling mental fatigue is a major component of the swim. Dr Lane knows he’ll have to find ways to deal with this.

“It’s the boredom, the loneliness and the fatigue,” he said.

“There’s big dark holes that you can fall into.”

Despite the obstacles, Dr Lane is excited to reach his personal goal and raise much needed funds for intensive care research and training.

“The Channel was always something I wanted to do from a personal perspective but I wanted to make it mean something even more and raise money for a cause that I thought was really worthwhile,” he said.

“I’m quite excited by the whole thing.”

With the goal to reach $21,000 in donations – $1000 for every mile of the swim – Dr Lane is hoping to establish a follow-up intensive care clinic at Nepean Hospital for patients once they have been discharged.

“Often their normal GP support network or normal things in the community haven’t got the ability to explain what they’ve been through and why they’re feeling the way they’re feeling,” he explained.

“It’s something so specialised and intense and only the people who are aware of it can give an insight.”

Drunk driver lucky to survive drunk driver who ploughed into a steam roller, narrowly missing night-time road workers will learn his fate next month after blowing nearly four times over the legal limit.

Blake Mangion of Werrington County faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with his second high-range drink driving offence after he crashed his car into a manned road block set up with witches hats at Llandilo.

Court documents show the 23-year-old was heading west on Eighth Avenue near the intersection of Second Avenue about 2am on February 4, when he passed numerous workers all wearing high visibility clothing before colliding with a large steam roller in the centre of freshly paved bitumen, causing “extensive damage” to his vehicle.

Fearing one of his workers had been maimed or killed, the site manager rushed towards the vehicle, and along with his workers, managed to halt a highly intoxicated Mangion, who had by this time exited the vehicle and was attempting to flee the scene.

Police attended and observed the accused’s vehicle to be missing a wheel.

After following gouge marks in the bitumen, officers located the missing item on Captain Cook Drive, Willmot, about four kilometres away.

He was subsequently arrested and blew 0.197 back at the station.

Mangion is due to face court again for sentence on August 25.

There will be one million more people calling western Sydney home by 2030 ... we can’t pretend it’s not going to happen. But along with the challenges come great opportunities.

f you’re looking for a humerus activity for the kids this weekend, look no further than Nepean Hospital for a free exhibition on how the skeleton works.

Enjoyable for both old and young bones, local residents have the exciting opportunity to learn about skeletons and the human body.

It is part of the Australian Orthopaedic Association’s travelling exhibition across the country celebrating 80 years of orthopaedics in Australia.

“This exhibition is open to everyone who is interested in understanding how their skeletons work,” Australian Orthopaedic Association President, Dr Ian Incoll said.

“The specialty of orthopaedics keeps our children in the game, puts the bounce back in the knees and hips of our elderly and keeps all of Australia moving with more than 1.1 million joint replacement procedures undertaken throughout Australia’s hospital network since 1999.

“The exhibition is designed to educate the community about the hundreds of orthopaedic procedures performed in more than 300 Australian hospitals every day.”

Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumours, musculoskeletal trauma and congenital disorders.

In something sure to tickle the budding athlete or future doctor in your home, the display includes the bare bones of information on sports injury prevention, the evolution of joint replacement, developments in the treatment of fractures and innovations including the use of 3D printing, robotics, computer navigation and customising implants during surgery.

Acting Head of the Department Orthopaedics, Nepean Hospital Associate Professor Charles New, urged all locals to visit the display.

“The advances being made in orthopaedic surgery are astounding, with major breakthroughs in prostheses, surgical techniques, equipment and imaging,” he said.

“This has meant we can help thousands of Penrith residents, who previously would have led a relatively inactive life, to improve their quality of life.”

The exhibition can be viewed at level three of the hospital’s East Block in the waiting area outside the surgical unit until this Monday, July 24.

Hoping for a good send off, this is the 17th year that St Marys Rugby League Club has taken part in the Bash, having donated over $700,000 to Variety The Children’s Charity.

Participants head to Queensland before taking a twist and navigating to the Northern Territory, visiting some iconic rural towns and schools along the way.

President Warren Smith said the Bash is for those who want to help make a difference to the lives of Aussie kids in need.

“We’re able to help these disadvantaged kids throughout Australia, and are able to help the schools out in the bush with donations of sporting gear,” he said.

“Apart from the money that we donate to Variety, this time we’ve got about $15,000 to $20,000 in gear to donate to schools while we’re running around.

“We have a good time and it just gives us a good feeling to know that we’re helping these kids.”

or most of his life, Terry Bulloch has been a pillar of the community, spending countless evenings and weekends fundraising, campaigning and volunteering.

Inducted on June 15, 1968, St Marys Rotary Club member Mr Bulloch has been honoured for his commendable work across half a century in Rotary.

He was taken completely by surprise when he was given the Avenue of Service Award, only the fourth recipient of the award in District 9675.

“It came as a shock, it was very good,” Mr Bulloch said.

“There’s 64 clubs in the district, and I don’t know how many people that involves, probably at least 1,500.”

The Avenue of Service Award commends the service carried out by an individual Rotarian that embodies Rotary’s Five Avenues of Service.

The Five Avenues are the philosophical and practical framework of Rotary and include club, vocational, community, international and youth service.

aying ‘no’ to a request can be really difficult for many of us.

It can stem from not wanting to hurt someone’s feelings or disappoint them. Or it can be related to the pressure we put on ourselves to ‘do it all’. But there can never be a ‘win-win’ situation when you say ‘yes’ to something you know should have been ‘no’.

Either you disappoint people when you are unable to fulfil the promise or run out of time to fulfil it. Or you end up exhausted, or doing something that conflicts with your interests.

Whenever you say ‘yes’ when you know you don’t have the time, you affect your life and work balance. By saying ‘no’ you can allocate your time to things that are more important to you or that which gets you closer to your goals and objectives.

Instead of working to please others, saying ‘no’ helps you focus on your life and set your priorities rather than allowing others to dictate what you should do.

If you set boundaries, it teaches others what you will do and what you won’t

do. It also lets people know they can’t take advantage of you. Be aware that some people will try to elicit a positive response from you, trying everything from whining to complimenting and bullying. Be firm and assertive, and stick to your decision.

It is important to ensure that you communicate your ‘no’ clearly. If you say ‘maybe’ it can be interpreted as ‘yes’, even though you have no intention of doing it. This indecision can create far more issues that a firm ‘no’; and most people appreciate a decisive, initial response. In all situations, learn to say ‘no’ politely and it will be easy for you to turn down requests without feeling guilty.

Saying ‘no’ does not mean you are selfish or inconsiderate; it only means you are strong enough to set your priorities.

Take a look at your calendar and see how you spend your time. What you spend your time on the most, is what matters most. When you look at your schedule, does it align with what really matters to you?

any people have a lifelong interest to work for themselves, whilst others consider the change upon redundancy or encountering workplace issues. Others believe they have found a niche. What makes the leap from being an employee to a business owner a successful one?

Be realistic and do your research!

You may be an absolutely awesome widget maker, but how much business acumen do you have? Can you review your business strategy, but also address the day to day detail? Doing a job as an employee does not mean you know how to run a business, even if that trade is the core of your offer.

Research prices and competitors, and understand why prices are higher than salaries (depending on overheads it could be two to five times what you would have been paid as an employee just to cover costs), and what compliance obligations you face. Tools like www.ablis.business. gov.au (Australian Business Licensing Information Service) will assist you with this, but seeing an advisor such as myself who has seen hundreds of start-up

businesses, will help you avoid some of the pitfalls.

Starting your own business To be a true independent small business owner you will start your business from scratch, but you should seek support from advisors, accountants and lawyers.

Franchises Many people made redundant consider buying a franchise, because they have a payout and think it’s an entry to business.

Remember you are really a combination of employee and business owner as you have the franchisor to report to for many issues including marketing.

Do your due diligence, including checking with franchisees not suggested by the franchisor, to make sure you know what you are buying.

Recognising you don’t know it all Many people leave their career as a star employee in their field. However, in small business you soon realise and appreciate that as new business owners you are often every department – marketing, customer service, manufacturing, IT support. Make sure you seek help or at least do not neglect key areas like IT!

A

fortnight ago I wrote about the frightening prospect that Penrith’s Finals hopes could evaporate in the space of eight days, with clashes against Manly and the Warriors likely to determine their fate.

Underdogs in both games, the Panthers showed plenty of fight to collect four competition points and place themselves very much back in the race for a top eight spot.

As much as those two games could have killed off Penrith’s hopes, the next three have the prospect to almost confirm a spot in the post-season.

Canterbury and Wests Tigers in consecutive weeks give Penrith a real chance to reach 26 competition points by the time round 22 is complete. From there, the task would be to win two (but possibly just one) games to qualify for the Finals – a prospect that seemed to be slipping through the side’s fingers just a few weeks ago.

No matter what the scenario, Anthony Griffin will have his side focused on only one thing right now – beating the Titans at Pepper Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In torrential conditions last week the Titans showed a tonne of spirit to down the defending Premiers 30-10. Regardless of the weather, the Titans showed plenty of smart play to take on a Sharks defensive line that kept coming up too quickly – the majority of their tries a direct result of Cronulla over-reading the play and halfback Ash Taylor taking advantage.

Taylor’s game may have been good – in

fact it was probably his best game in a couple of seasons – but it was his opposite number seven this weekend who had everyone talking after round 19. Nathan Cleary stepped up to the plate following Matt Moylan’s late withdrawal from the Penrith side, leading the team around brilliantly and bagging a hat trick of tries in his own right.

And while Cleary has been in the spotlight this past week, there’s probably no better person to be able to handle it – the cool, calm and collected nature of the teenager (and the helpful influence of dad Ivan) will ensure that he doesn’t get too big for his boots any time soon.

With Moylan slated to return on Saturday, Cleary won’t be quite as busy but he’s without doubt proven something to his skipper and Moylan’s week off may turn out to be a blessing in disguise with the halves combination perhaps to find more

balance now that Cleary’s shown what he is capable of.

The Gold Coast boast plenty of game breakers and their current position on the ladder is perhaps more reflective of their early season injury crisis than it is their ability across the park. From the Hayne Plane to Anthony Don, Konrad Hurrell and William Zillman, the Titans’ ability to create something quickly via their backline is something to be admired.

After getting rid of the cobwebs with a nice performance last week, I’m expecting a big game from James Fisher-Harris, who has so much potential if he can remain injury-free. The loss of Trent Merrin to injury is significant but it’s a chance for Fisher-Harris to stand up.

The Panthers have shown enough in the past fortnight to prove they’re back on track and within reach of silencing their critics. Tip: Panthers by 14

P

anthers hooker Peter Wallace has opened up for the first time about getting injured the day before he was due to return to the State of Origin arena after eight long years.

The 31-year-old was all but named to return to the NSW Blues for the first time since 2009 – that was until the former captain injured his groin during Penrith’s win over Newcastle in Round 11.

Wallace was so close to joining the Blues side for Origin I that he was asked by coach Laurie Daley to attend a team meet up at The Star casino on the day of the announcement, in case good news regarding his injury eventuated.

“There was always hope,” Wallace said on Tuesday.

“I didn’t know what was wrong but I was pretty sore.

“There was some hope initially that it would be something that would settle down pretty quick but that wasn’t the case – it was a pretty big tear. It was very disappointing.”

As history shows, Titans hooker Nathan Peats was chosen in Wallace’s absence and enjoyed a memorable debut for the Blues in their only win of the series.

Wallace said it was tough watching the Origin opener knowing he should have been there.

“The first one was hard to watch but the last two games I was looking forward to them,” he said.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. It’s very frustrating but I’ve had some disappointments in my career, you just have to move on and focus on the next thing and that was getting back as quick as I could for Penrith.”

With Mitch Rein and Sione Katoa doing a tremendous job filling in, Wallace’s return gives Penrith some much needed experience as the business end of the season starts to heat up.

“I’m looking forward to starting this week. Both Rein and Sione did a great job while I was away,” Wallace said.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been at home for a few weeks in a row and it’s come at a good time for us where we are sitting this time of year.

“Hopefully we can use that to our advantage.”

H

e’s been the subject of rumours for the last few weeks, but Panthers interchange forward Leilani Latu has denied he wants out of the club.

Fronting the media on Tuesday afternoon, the 24-yearold Tongan international was forced to answer questions regarding his future, despite being contracted to the Panthers until the end of the 2020 season.

It’s been reported that the towering prop was unhappy at the foot of the Mountains and was in early talks with three clubs – New Zealand, Newcastle and Parramatta – to play out his future elsewhere.

“It beats me where these rumours are coming from,” Latu told Extra Time.

“I actually got questioned by my teammates about the situation and I told them I’m not going anywhere.”

Latu confirmed he had spoken to Panthers boss Phil Gould as soon as the news was reported.

“I spoke to my manager about it, I spoke to Gus about it – I did that on the first day that I found out [about the rumours],” he said.

“Since then I haven’t looked into all the rumours and what everyone is saying about me.”

Latu, who made his first grade debut with the Panthers back in 2015, burst onto the scene with plenty of promise, largely thanks to his size and ball-playing skills.

However, this season he’s struggled to find the form that saw him selected for City Origin last year.

When pressed if he was still happy at the club, the Canterbury Bulldogs junior reiterated how much he loved playing at Penrith.

“I love this club, I love my teammates, I love the coach, I love the community here and our fan base. Everything here is going well for me,” he said.

“I’m here until 2020, and each week I plan to give it my best for this club.”

Meanwhile, fellow Panthers teammate and livewire Tyrone Peachey has also been the subject of exit rumours of late but Extra Time understands that too is well off the mark.

Battle of the ‘game managers’ will be exciting to watch

W

hen Panthers skipper Matt Moylan was ruled out of Penrith’s line-up before last week’s clash against the New Zealand Warriors, it was up to young halfback Nathan Cleary to take control.

He did just that!

With his side down 22-18, Nathan completely took over the back end of that game and looked in complete control when the scores were tight. The way Nathan finished that game off was everything I mentioned in this column last week – it was controlled, game management. Nathan’s one of the best, if not the best young player in the game doing that at the moment.

Often halves can try too hard when their fellow playmaker is not there but I thought Nathan played exceptionally well, especially with Tyrone May outside him on debut.

With Moylan named to return from a hamstring injury this Saturday against the Titans, it will be important for him to understand that he doesn’t need to overplay his hand. Cleary’s got the hot hand

at the moment and with veteran Peter Wallace also set to return, it’s all coming along nicely for the Panthers at the right time.

What fans need to understand however, is that Nathan isn’t going to score 20+ points every week. But if he’s kicking to corners, running the ball at tired forwards and massaging the game – then he’s doing his job. Don’t expect Nathan to score three tries every week because it’s not going to happen!

While I congratulate Penrith on a gritty win against the Warriors last week, they are going to have to play smart this weekend against the Titans.

Gold Coast are a fantastic side who have come to Sydney multiple times this year and beaten teams on pure heart and determination, even though they’ve been riddled with injuries.

And if experts thought Nathan Cleary had a great game last Friday night, then Ash Taylor’s performance against the Premiers in the wet was just as impressive.

Saturday afternoon’s battle between Cleary and Taylor will be juicy to watch.

While very young, those two guys are head and shoulders above everyone else

under the age of 25 when it comes to game management.

Both could also play State of Origin one day. While many people are pushing for Nathan to steer the Blues around next year, I personally don’t think it’s right to

Highs and lows of rugby league there for all to see

T

he highs and lows that can be delivered by rugby league were there for all to see at Mount Smart Stadium (Manu Vatuvei Stadium) in Auckland last Friday night.

On the positive was a kid you know well, Nathan Cleary (pictured). Just 19 years of age and in his first full season of NRL, Cleary ripped apart his opposition for whom he used to be a ballboy back in the day.

Three tries and five goals for a personal haul of 22 points were inclusive of a command performance.

Alongside Nathan was Minchinbury Jets junior Tyrone May. For Tyrone, it was game one in the NRL, and it came with a try on debut.

These are moments as a commentator I really enjoy.

As a matter of fact I have called all the four pointers on debut of May, Viliame Kikau and Corey Harawira-Naera this year on Fox League.

But then there is the down side, and it was felt by both teams.

Skippering the Panthers in the absence

of Matt Moylan, Trent Merrin suffered a knee injury in the first half. He’ll be doing well to be back on the field before the Finals if the Panthers make it.

For the Warriors, Shaun Johnson’s season was literally cut down by a knee injury in the second half. It won’t require surgery, but the only likely football we’ll see from the Warriors superstar again in 2017 is at the World Cup. There would be a fair bit of mental ‘pain’ and frustration caused by the injuries for both players.

We all wish them well for their rehab, just as Panthers fans have done this year for the likes of Sam McKendry, Bryce Cartwright, Peter Wallace and Dean Whare. It’s a tough sport and teams need a bit of luck on the injury front to be the best they can be.

As for the state of play for the Panthers and their playoff chances, I bring with me this week a message of hope.

In the 10 seasons since we went to 16 teams and each team playing 24 matches, the top eight with seven rounds to go has never been the final top eight.

The Panthers are the best placed side to be the team to force their way in.

H

ow do you win six games, lose none and still not make the Finals of a tournament?

That was the story for Penrith’s Super League side of 1997, who cruised their way through the World Club Championship only to miss out on playing for the trophy.

The championship was split into four pools – Australian Pool A, Australian Pool B, Europe Pool A and Europe Pool B. The bizarre mid-season tournament saw the Panthers travel to Odsal Stadium in Bradford on June 9, 1997.

In front of 14,378 fans the Panthers emerged 20-16 winners. The side stayed in the UK, defeating Warrington 52-22

the next week in front of 3,850 fans at Wilderspool Stadium. For their final game in England, Penrith thrashed St Helens 50-30 in a game where the scoreboard kept up with the match clock.

Back home in Penrith, the Panthers continued their dominance of the international sides in round four of the tournament, defeating Warrington 48-12 in front of a disappointing crowd of 5,642.

Pretty much the same number turned up the following week to see Penrith defeat Bradford 54-14 in round five.

On August 4, 1997 the Panthers played their final game of the tournament in front of 5,000 fans at Penrith Stadium, defeating St Helens 32-26.

So with six impressive wins, how did the Panthers not make the Finals of the tournament?

The club’s for and against would ultimately count against them, with the side finishing equal first in their pool but fourth (only the top three qualified)

on points differential behind Brisbane, Auckland and Cronulla.

The rather strange and complicated structure of the competition saw Bradford, who hadn’t won a game during the tournament and had a points differential of minus 146, qualify for the Quarter Finals.

In the end, the Australian teams dominated the Finals of the 1997 World Club Championship and the Brisbane Broncos and Hunter Mariners faced off in the Final. It would be the only Final the Mariners ever reached in their short existence in top flight rugby league.

A Broncos side that boasted the likes of Darren Lockyer, Wendell Sailor, Kevin Walters, Allan Langer and Gorden Tallis ran riot over the Mariners, winning 36-12 in front of 10,300 fans at Ericsson Stadium in Auckland.

And so brought to an end one of the most bizarre rugby league tournaments you’ll ever see.

ave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes made a name for himself by joking about being a single 20-something university dropout living on the

dole.

These days the father of three takes most of his material from family life with his kids and wife Holly in St Kilda, a suburb he affectionately describes as ‘Bondi without the good beach’.

“I wanted to have a fourth child, and when my wife said ‘why?’ I said ‘just for the material’,” Dave recalled.

“That wasn’t a good enough reason apparently.”

Those familiar and hilariously relatable tales of family life have been featured across stage, radio and TV on the myriad of projects that Dave has put his hand up for over the last few years.

“If someone offers you a reasonable amount of money to talk on stage for 20 minutes it’s probably hard to decide ‘nah I’ll sit at home and watch ‘MasterChef’ tonight’,” Dave laughed.

“Combine that with the fact that I love being on stage wherever it is, there’s a lot of motivation for me to not stay at home basically.”

Local audiences will get a taste of the iconic Aussie funnyman when he brings his new show ‘Deluded’ to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers next month.

Unsurprisingly the name for the show came to Dave during his time as host of the 2016 season of the reality show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’.

“I had a feeling some of the contestants were deluded, basically,” the KIIS FM star laughed.

“But then I thought, well we’re all just really deluded living our lives.”

While his face, and that iconic voice, have appeared all across the entertainment world, being on the stage is the place where Dave feels most at home.

“My wife says to me ‘why are you flying to Mackay tonight to do a gig?’. I’m like ‘because there’s a crowd there that I can make laugh, so I want to do it’,” he laughed.

“She’ll say ‘we don’t need the money’ but it’s not about the money, I just love being in front of audiences.

“When I’m on stage and you’ve got a crowd really laughing hard and you’re in the zone, that’s a joy that I’m addicted to and I’ll be chasing that for the rest of my life I’d say.”

Dave Hughes will be bringing his show ‘Deluded’ to the Evan Theatre on Saturday, August 19 at 8pm. Tickets are $40.

Ê After the past three years on Channel Ten, the ARIA Awards are returning to Channel Nine. The 31st Annual ARIA Awards will take place on Tuesday, November 28, some four years after they last screened on the network. After some lack lustre ratings in years past, there’s expected to be plenty of big names on the line-up to get people tuning in. Ê It was one of the biggest shows of 2016, now season two of ‘Australian Survivor’ has finally been given an airdate. Channel Ten has confirmed the new season will launch on Sunday, July 30 at 7pm. Jonathan LaPaglia returns as host with 24 contestants competing for a whopping $500,000 prize. In some exciting news for super fans, Ten has also confirmed a live finale and reunion special in response to viewer feedback. Ê It took the world by storm last year, now fans only have to wait a matter of months to see what happens next. The second season of ‘Stranger Things’ will hit Netflix on Friday, October 27. ‘Stranger Things’ was recently nominated for 18 Emmy Awards including for Best Drama. Ê The latest season of ‘The Bachelor Australia’ will premiere on Channel Ten on Wednesday, July 26. This season will star heartthrob Matty J.

Famed director Christopher Nolan (‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Interstellar’) is back on the big screen with the WWII drama ‘Dunkirk’.

The film, which was written and directed by Nolan, takes audiences into this real life evacuation.

Shot from three differing points of view – land, sea and air – it tells the story of Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, France and Canada who were surrounded by the German army on the beaches of Dunkirk.

The soldiers were evacuated in Operation Dynamo during the early stages of WWII. ‘Dunkirk’ features ‘Mad Max: Fury

Forget the new fad diet, just make a few simple changes As summer approaches, we all want to look and feel better. But falling for the latest diet or eating trick is not the answer to achieving your goals...

While we may still be in the grips of winter it won’t be long till phrases like ‘lose fat fast for summer’ start popping up all over the place.

Self confessed experts will crawl out of the woodwork to tell us ridiculous things like how we should only eat green foods until summer in a bid to get that elusive perfect figure that even celebrities need a once over in Photoshop to achieve.

Now there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to improve your health or increase your fitness.

The issue comes about when we feel that we have to fit into certain moulds to be deemed as ‘healthy’, which funnily enough is often very closely linked to what society deems as ‘beauty’.

With so many of these messages coming at us, from social media in particular, the first thing I think we all need to do is to take a step back. Get yourself away from the marketing and the advertising and truly think about what you want to achieve and what is a realistic way to get there.

By now I’m sure many of us have done the dieting thing more than once, myself very much included. And yes an all-newtotally-improved-and-different fad diet will come around again this year but I can guarantee you it’s just the Amazing 2016 Summer Diet in sheep’s clothing.

Once you realise the diet road is a circular one, get yourself off it by shifting your thinking towards making realistic changes.

What is one thing you can change about your eating habits right now that is achievable and sustainable?

Can you start to bring a piece of fruit to work each day instead of that chocolate bar? Can you add an extra half cup of vegetables to your dinner each night? Can you reduce your portions by being more mindful when you’re eating?

Whatever it is make it doable and specific to you and your goals.

Learning to improve our relationship with food is not easy and it takes time, but it’s a hell of a lot better than jumping back on that pre-summer dieting merrygo-round.

wrote a few weeks ago about Orange’s Brangayne having two vineyards — one decidedly higher and cooler than the other.

They’re certainly not the only ones in the district adopting this approach.

Ross Hill also has two vineyards — their ‘home’ vineyard at Wallace Lane, high on the slopes of Mt Canobolas, and the Griffin Road Vineyard, on the milder north-western edge of Orange as you head along the Mitchell Highway towards Molong and Dubbo.

If winemaker Phil Kerney didn’t have the Griffin Road Vineyard at his disposal, the only red in Ross Hill’s premium Pinnacle Series would be a pinot noir.

That’s the only red variety that Phil and Ross Hill’s owners reckon will ripen at Wallace Lane, and hence it’s the only red variety planted there.

But the Pinnacle Series label carries four reds, of which the 2015 vintages have just been released — the Pinnacle Series Pinot Noir (pictured), the 2015 Pinnacle Series Cabernet Franc, plus a 2015 Shiraz and a 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter already having sold out.

They formed a very solid quartet, which will expand to a quintet if Phil Kerney gets his way, by the addition of a pinot noir made 100 per cent from the Griffin Road Vineyard.

That should make for a highly interesting comparative tasting — two pinots made by the same hands from vineyards separated by a couple of hundred feet in altitude.

Dogs aren’t immune from the troubles of dementia

Just like humans, our dogs struggle as they get older.

They can also suffer from the serious consequences of dementia and Brain Ageing...

After bringing us many years of love and joy, our dogs inevitably start to slow down and show their age. Dementia, also termed Brain Ageing or Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), is sadly a fact of life for many ageing dogs. CCD is a degenerative neurological condition in dogs that is similar to dementia in humans. It results in a gradual and progressive loss of brain function. Unfortunately this disease is very common and at least 25 per cent of dogs older than 10 years of age show one of the signs associated with brain ageing.

By 15 years of age, more than 60 per cent of dogs are affected by CCD. Thankfully, there are treatment options that can help dogs with dementia.

Behavioural changes are normally the first indication of brain ageing in dogs.

Behavioural changes can also be due to behavioural problems or medical problems such as heart disease, pain and arthritis, incontinence, sensory problems (blindness or deafness), endocrine disease (eg diabetes), brain disease (eg cancer) or metabolic disease (eg renal

failure). There are also some medications such as steroids and medicine for incontinence that can cause worsening of signs associated with CCD. It is essential that animals are examined by a veterinarian to rule out medical problems before a diagnosis of dementia is made.

So what are the signs of CCD? As brain function declines, you may find that your animal becomes disorientated or confused, house training and other learned behaviours may be lost – for example, you may find your dog forgets where the food/water bowls are or starts to soil in the house. Interactions with

family members and sleep patterns may change so you may find that your dog wakes up and paces through the night.

Some animals may become anxious, agitated or irritable and some dogs will even develop aggression.

What can we do about CCD? It is important that we rule out concurrent medical problems that can be contributing to your pet’s behaviour changes. This will involve a thorough examination to determine any sources of pain, checking the eyes and ears to make sure there are no sensory problems. Blood testing and imaging may also be required.

We all reach for the calculator in our home or office, but is it doing more harm than good when it comes to kids?

Before the advent of calculators to schools, approximately 90 per cent of students entering high school knew their multiplication tables by heart up to 12 x 12.

Now that percentage could be as low as 25 per cent, with many students having no ability whatsoever in mental calculation. During tuition sessions it is quite common to see students reach for a calculator to multiply 6 x 4 or to evaluate 72 – 69.

Australia’s ranking in mathematics amongst OECD nations has fallen in the past two decades from fifth overall to 24th position (see previous column); the reliance on calculators as substitutes for learning may have contributed to that fall.

Mathematics is about seeing relationships, for example a factorising problem may require the student to find two numbers that sum to 23 and multiply to give 120 (8 x 15), a calculator does not give that answer.

The impact of calculators is far more reaching than just the loss of table skills.

When I started high school teaching most students entering high school were competent in using the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with fractions, decimals and percentages.

Today, very few Year 10 students are fully competent in these areas and completely rely on their calculators for even the simplest of calculations.

At Master Coaching we do not use calculators until Year 9 because we understand the real advantage of being competent with number skills.

We like to give our students a ‘love of numbers’; we do this by showing them a few simple calculating techniques that pique their interest.

A simple one is the ability to mentally multiply two numbers in the 90s quicker than someone using a calculator.

For example, we show the student how to calculate 94 x 97 = 9118 mentally.

The method is simple and will be fully explained in this column next week.

The cause of IBS occurs because the inner workings of the digestive tract has at one point been compromised.

Whether someone picked up an infection or had a strong course of antibiotics or was under significant stress and/or overly exposed to a diet high in processed foods, the outcome would be same.

The over exposure to any one of these triggers can cause a temporary separation of the gap junction within the intestinal tract likely increasing intestinal permeability.

Consequently, microscopic food particles may leak out and enter the blood stream, generating an immune complex.

Subsequently, future consumption of any of the exposed foods creates a reaction within the body, emitting symptoms such as diarrhoea, random stomach pains, constipation, bloating, migraines and weight fluctuations.

his is particularly relevant to me now as my wife is six months pregnant and our lives are about to change forever! I have spoken to clients countless times about how having children drastically impacts our financial situation and it is imperative that our financial plan reflects this change.

Our income and expenses are going to change substantially. My wife is very successful in her career and is planning on having 12 months maternity leave. We will definitely miss her income. At the same time our lifestyle is about to change substantially, which will greatly affect our expenses. Being the stereotypical DINKs (Double Income No Kids), we eat out often, spend too much on our hobbies (golf and running for me, shopping and fitness for my wife) and are at times less careful than we should be with our discretionary spending.

Our expected daughter is going to mean we do all of that stuff less, but will have a new bunch of expenses associated with our new baby. Our old budget is out the window; both our income and expenses

have changed so much, the existing budget will bear no resemblance to our new life and new spending priorities.

We will have much lower capacity to save and we will have to change our savings plan. Some couples starting a family may go into a cash flow deficit, with expenses being more than the income. There are some strategies to address this, hopefully we will have prepared and will be using existing savings to make up the short fall. Other options such as converting mortgage payments to interest only in the short time may be the solution.

But we also saw the good news, how through prayer to God, a new and transformed heart can be made available to anyone who would come to Jesus, looking to follow him with confident faith and trust.

This is indeed good news!

But what does a new heart look like?

What should you expect?

Just as a person who is given a heart transplant is given new energy in life, so too does a person who has received a new heart from God find a new, different, better life.

In the Bible the Apostle Paul describes

it as “...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.”

Imagine a world with people living like this?

Imagine the difference in your life being able to live like this?

This is how Jesus lived. You can experience these characteristics by looking to Jesus. Real other person centred love.

Joy and peace in the face of uncertainty.

Patience in the most trying circumstances. Genuine kindness, goodness and gentleness to people in need. Faithfulness to persevere. Self control.

ollowing an outstanding performance representing Australia earlier this year, young baseball sensation Kyan Roach has once again been selected to represent his country on the world stage.

The Glenmore Park resident will don the

famous green and gold later this month when he competes at the 2017 U12 WBSC Baseball World Cup in Taiwan.

Kyan and his Aussie teammates qualified for the World Cup back in January, following a tough qualifier against host nation Guam and American Samoa.

Speaking with the Weekender, the 12-year-old said although he was a little

nervous about what lies ahead, he can’t wait to take on the challenge of representing his country.

“When I found out I made the team I was really excited and nervous at the same time,” Kyan said.

“We’re playing against some big countries including the USA and Korea, so while I’m a little bit spooked out I can’t

wait to test myself against those other nations.”

Australia will begin their U12 World Cup campaign on July 28 against the United States, and will finish their opening round against Nicaragua on August 1.

The U12 Baseball World Cup will take place in Tainan, Taiwan from July 28 to August 5.

The Weekender’s Meet The President series introduces you to the people in charge of our local sporting clubs. This week, we chat with Nepean Football Association President Frances Refalo...

How long have you been the President of the Nepean Football Association for?

I am currently in the middle of my second two-year tenure as President of the NFA, but I have been a member of the Board for approximately 14 years holding various other roles including Women’s Co-ordinator and Treasurer.

How long have you been involved with football and what were your previous roles?

I have been involved with football at different levels for over 20 years. I started with coaching my son’s team in U8’s, and then joined my local club as a player as well as being on the committee for my local club, holding positions of Registrar, Competition Secretary and Secretary.

As President, explain what your role entails?

As President of an Association I see my role as well as my fellow Board members, as being one of guidance, planning and development for the future.

At NFA we are blessed to have a magnificent team of staff that look after the day to day running of our sport, which allows the Board time to strategically plan for the future.

Tell me about your football background, how did you fall in love with the sport?

I have always been a lover of sports but growing up I was a netball player and knew nothing about football except that you cannot touch the ball with your hands.

At a young age I registered my sons into football, the club committee person asked me if I could give her a hand moving the equipment down to the field, which I was more than happy to oblige. As I was walking back to where I was standing, I hear the committee person say “I’d like to introduce you to your coach”. As this was my son’s team I was interested and stopped to see who it was. They all seemed to be looking my way, so I turned to see who was behind me. No one was there. It was at this stage I realised “Oh my God, it’s me!”. I made a run to the local Penrith library and borrowed every book and video I could lay

Oscar was at the shelter for quite sometime and was lucky enough to be adopted however it didn’t work out and he has been returned.

Oscar’s new family will need to have at least 6ft fencing as he can and will jump the fence if he is left alone for extended periods of time. Oscar can be picky with other dogs that he likes so if you have a dog we always recommend a meet and greet before Adoption.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing football locally?

• Retaining volunteers to manage the running of our 31 clubs plus our special needs group and the representative club under NFA jurisdiction.

• Introducing football activities that accommodate the changing lifestyles and ages of people within our association boundaries to continue to promote a healthy, active lifestyle.

• Educating participants within our communities to adhere to acceptable and responsible comments in a public forum.

• Encouraging all participants to respect the worth and dignity of all participants within our sport.

• Raising awareness within our communities of work that NFA does all year around.

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

This is a difficult question as it’s hard to pick only one. But as an overall, I would have to pick the reduction of violence but not only in football but in all sports.

There are young children on the sideline watching their father, mother or siblings play and they do not need to be witnessing such acts of violence.

In the higher levels of sport these players are idols to the younger ones and ambassadors to the game. Do we really want these players committing acts of violence on the field so then the younger ones think that they are free to do the same?

Are you happy with the amount of Local and State Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

Like all other sports we would never say no to more funding.

There are always plenty of success stories about football in the Western Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

Like the question says, there are so many success stories and to pick only one is impossible as they are all successes for different reasons.

Last season one of our aims for the association was to offer an associationbased and run all year round football; this was achieved with the introduction and registration of approximately 900 players

future years ahead in Summer Football. This is a small sided game of football being run on weeknights out of Jamison Park. This season the association wanted to ensure that our player members were getting the best out of their football experience and to improve the skill and quality of football being played.

It was for this reason the Board, with the assistance of the staff and club committee volunteers, set a target of having all division one coaches qualified to the required level for the age group they are coaching.

I am happy to say that this was achieved with 100 per cent compliance; this is a first for this association.

How many registered members does the Nepean Football Association currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

We currently have over 12,100 players; over 2,300 volunteers which includes coaches, managers and committee people; 900 players in summer; and approximately 300 players in our representative arm Nepean Representative Football Club (NFC) registered in our association or our jurisdiction. We are constantly looking at new ways of promoting our name ‘Nepean Football Association’ as well as the game.

Wanderers to hold Members Forum

Basketball royalty in Penrith as local kids learn from one of the greats at school holiday clinic

Last season the club had a suspended sentence hanging over its head and was lucky to escape a points deduction following the RBB’s crude banner displayed during one of the Sydney derbies. Instead, the Wanderers copped a $20,000 fine for bringing the game into disrepute.

A Members Forum will be held this Tuesday, July 25 at Club Marconi to discuss the RBB moving forward and to “create a more unified and better experience for all”.

Meanwhile, in some good news for the club, the Wanderers have announced defender Robbie Cornthwaite as their new captain.

After joining Western Sydney in 2016, the towering centre-back soon developed into an important part of the club’s defence, going on to make 21 appearances across all competitions last season.

And in a shock announcement on Tuesday, the club confirmed that foundation player Mark Bridge would be returning on a two-year deal.

Born and raised in St Clair, Bridge has spent the last year playing with Chiangrai United in Thailand.

ydney Kings and Australian Olympic basketball star Kevin Lisch was in town last week, conducting school holiday clinics at the Penrith Basketball Stadium.

Held over two days, the MAD Basketball School Holiday Clinic saw hundreds of local kids participate in the intense program, designed to keep young athletes exercising and training during the winter school break.

Players who took part in the clinic had access to the famous Dr Dish shooting machine and the Fit Light training system along with intense basketball training from elite coaches in the game.

The popular Sydney Kings guard said it was a privilege to give back to the sport.

“You go to some camps and it kind of feels like baby sitting, which is fine, but the good thing about these MAD Basketball camps is that the kids there actually want to learn, so it’s really good,” Lisch told the Weekender.

“Over the last couple of days I’ve been teaching kids various simple things like footwork and how to dribble with their head up.”

The 31-year-old American-born two time NBL MVP said it makes him very happy to see so many people, especially kids, picking up a ball and hitting the hardwood.

“Basketball is one of the most participated sports in the country these days, so it’s really good to see more and more kids getting involved,” Lisch said.

“I also think after the Olympics in Rio last year and the rise of the NBL on Fox

Sports, people are starting to see that it’s a fun sport to play and kids are having a lot of fun playing it.”

This October, Lisch will return to the Kings for his second season with the famous club. After just missing out on the playoffs last season, Lisch is hopeful the Andrew Gaze coached team will have a much more consistent 2017/18 campaign.

“Last year we started out really well but didn’t finish as well,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to this year, putting that new team together and seeing what we can do.”

Chapter closes but broomball’s future in Penrith looks bright NATHAN TAYLOR

t’s a sport that often doesn’t garner much attention in mainstream circles but broomball is quickly becoming a popular alternative for hockey lovers.

Originating in Canada, broomball is an ice sport similar to ice hockey but instead of players wearing skates, they wear special rubber-soled shoes and a ball is used instead of a puck.

Players hit the ball around the ice with a stick called a broom, which looks nothing like the one you sweep your driveway with. Instead, the broom has a wooden or aluminium shaft as well as a rubber-molded triangular head similar in shape to that of a regular broom.

The aim of the game is to hit the ball into your opponent’s net.

Last Saturday night, the Broomball Association of Western Sydney held their 2017 Winter Grand Finals at Penrith Ice Palace in Jamisontown.

Three thrilling deciders took place including the C Grade match-up between the undefeated Glenmore Park Druids and the Journeymen.

The contest between the two experienced sides went right down to the wire, with the Druids scoring in the dying minutes to prevail 1-0.

Broomball is rising in popularity time Journeymen player Luke Monaghan said it was a tough way for the team to exit the competition.

“Journeymen have been playing in the competition for 10 years and this was our final season as a team,” he said.

“Some of us are moving on to other teams in the competition while some players are leaving the sport altogether.”

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, members of both sides celebrated with dinner and drinks after the match.

“It’s an incredibly friendly competition, we all know each other and we’ve all been playing together for seven years,” Monaghan said.

orried by threats they would be shut down if any further anti-social behaviour occurred, the Red and Black Bloc (RBB) appeared to play by the rules during Western Sydney’s match against Arsenal last Saturday night.

Last week – in a strongly worded letter to Wanderers members – CEO John Tsatsimas outlined how the RBB’s history of lighting flares at matches, pitch invasions and discriminatory behaviour had already cost the club hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, sanctions and lost commercial sponsorship.

Tsatsimas warned that if any further antisocial behaviour occurred during Wanderers matches, the club would not hesitate to shut down the RBB and redeploy non-offending members to other seats in the stadium.

“Notice is hereby given that should any of these incidents happen this season ... then the club reserves the right to close down the active supporter area for an indefinite period which will lead to the redeployment of nonoffending members to other available seating,” Tsatsimas said.
