enrith City Council will begin legal proceedings against the Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) as questions are raised about the use of public money.

Mayor Karen McKeown says the community deserves to know what happened to funding provided to the PBA by Council. “This is public money. We have an obligation

to our community to find out whether this money was used appropriately for economic development activities,� Cr McKeown said.

In June 2015, after an independent review of

a Deed of Agreement with the PBA, Council resolved that public funding for the Alliance would cease.

Departing Goldfinch puts family first Back to the polls: Penrith residents will return to the ballot box in September for Council elections DALE DRINKWATER

iberal Councillor Ben Goldfinch has confirmed he won’t contest September’s Local Government Election.

Penrith Council is one of 81 NSW Councils that will be holding an election on September 10, after it proved it was self sustainable and dodged amalgamating with another Council.

Cr Goldfinch said family reasons will see him bow out of Council service in September.

“I have a young family and I want to spend time with them, the last term has been a drain on that,” he told the Weekender.

Labor Councillor Prue Car will not be re-contesting her position in East Ward due to her role as the State Member for Londonderry.

“I’ve loved being a Penrith City Councillor. Local Government is the closest to the issues that affect people every day and it’s been a real privilege to represent both South Ward and East Ward in eight years,” she said.

Veteran Councillor Jim Aitken has confirmed he will be running as an independent in South Ward.

Current Mayor Karen McKeown will be re-contesting for the Labor Party, and Councillor Mark Davies will also run in South Ward for the Liberal Party.

Liberal Councillor Bernard Bratusa will be vacating his seat to run on Councillor Tricia Hitchen’s ticket in East Ward, up against Labor Councillor Greg Davies, and independent Councillors Jackie Greenow and Maurice Girotto.

In North Ward, controversial conservative Councillor Marcus Cornish has no plans to leave Council yet, and said he will “be there with bells on” – not quite music to the ears of Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler.

Cr Fowler will also be re-contesting for the Liberal Party, and Labor Party member John Thain will also try to keep his position in North Ward.

Independent Councillor Kevin Crameri said he hasn’t made up his mind yet, but is likely to stand.

“I wasn’t intending to stand this time but I don’t like what’s going on at Council,” he said.

Greens Councillor Michelle Tormey has confirmed she will be running as the party’s lead candidate in North Ward.

Voters are now urged to update their enrolment details or enrol for the first time ahead of the election.

illian Skinner should resign from her post as the Health Minister in New South Wales.

It is time for fresh eyes to look at the state of the health system and get our hospitals back on track.

Mrs Skinner’s handling of the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital debacle that has left one baby dead and another with severe disabilities has been woeful to say the least and should be the final straw for Premier Mike Baird to step in and take action.

Mrs Skinner says a full investigation will take place into how the two babies were incorrectly administered with nitrous oxide instead of oxygen at the hospital.

If I was the Health Minister and such an indefensive disaster had happened on my watch, I’d be on the doorstep of Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital demanding to know how it happened.

I’d be wanting to be shown first hand how, why and where the situation took place in an attempt to get an understanding of how such an immense failure could possibly happen.

I certainly wouldn’t be relying on a report, potentially a butt-covering exercise, to explain what occurred.

A report should be secondary to personal intervention by the Minister to understand how and why it happened.

According to the 2UE Breakfast show on Tuesday morning, NSW Health actually tried its best to “shut down” the story when Macquarie Radio started revealing details on Monday afternoon.

Mrs Skinner herself confirmed she knew of the situation last Thursday but didn’t publicly reveal the deadly mix-up until Monday night.

As the story was taking hold on Monday night and as a major scandal erupted, Mrs Skinner attended the glitzy Helpmann Awards at The Star.

Based on the facts presented so far it seems that only good luck has prevented more babies from dying or being left disabled at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.

If Mrs Skinner was still in Opposition, she would have demanded the Health Minister’s immediate resignation.

The incidents at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital come after revelations of another scandal at St Vincent’s Hospital, where dozens of patients were given incorrect chemotherapy dosages from 2012.

And they come as our hospitals remain under intense pressure.

The State Opposition this week revealed that one quarter of the 74,000 patients awaiting elective surgery in New South Wales are in greater western Sydney.

Nepean Hospital has the worst waiting list in the state.

When Mrs Skinner was the Opposition Health Minister, she said the Labor Government was “incompetent” because the wait list at Nepean had grown to 3,327 in June 2010.

It now stands at 3092 – only a minor change after more than five years of Liberal Government.

Back in 2008, the wait list at Nepean Hospital sat at 2030 patients.

What does that tell you about how successive governments have handled population growth in this part of Sydney as far as health infrastructure is concerned?

Jillian Skinner was a superb Opposition spokesperson for Health and as the state lurched from debacle to debacle, she was front and centre demanding it be fixed.

In 2011 she was given that chance.

Five years later, the state of our health system remains a major concern and as the Federal Election results in western Sydney showed, an issue of monumental importance to local people.

If Jillian Skinner was in charge of a private company the Board would have given her a gold watch and sent her on her way.

Being the Health Minister in NSW is one of the toughest gigs in politics.

It is never going to be easy, and there will always be scandals to navigate.

But there are now serious questions about the way this government has handled the portfolio since coming to power in 2011. It’s time we thanked Mrs Skinner for her enormous contribution to the health portfolio for many years, and took a different and fresh approach.

enrith Council has been forced to take legal action to recover financial statements and unspent money from the former Penrith Business Alliance (PBA).

Between 2009 and 2015, the PBA received $3.5 million from Council to develop a modern approach to achieve economic development in the Penrith area.

For the first five years, the PBA reported to Council on where the money was going, but Council claims they have still not received an audited financial statement or unspent public money for the final 2014/15 financial year.

Council said the PBA received $595,049 in that time.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said there needs to be accountability.

“This is public money. We have an obligation to our community to find out whether this money was used appropriately for economic development activities,” she said.

Council stopped funding the PBA in June 2015 after an independent review of a Deed of Agreement by the Professional Partner Group (PPG).

PBA Chairman Paul Brennan said the financial statements in question have now been audited and will be available to the PBA and Council shortly.

t Marys drivers have been put in the naughty corner after making the top 10 list for infringement notices issued by police to learner and provisional drivers in the last financial year.

With a total of 132 infringements issued in St Marys, offences range from mobile phone use behind the wheel to not complying with road rules, seat belt use and speeding statewide.

St Marys is fifth on the top 10 list and police are now appealing to learner and provisional drivers to drive safely and avoid taking any risks while behind the wheel.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, said holding a licence is a privilege and not a right.

“Novice drivers must recognise the responsibilities attached to that licence or risk losing the privilege, or worse, serious injury or death,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

“There is a great need for parents and older siblings of younger drivers to ensure they are driving safely on our roads.”

Police are urging drivers to take care least three years, including hands-free and on speaker mode, under a range of new restrictions to reverse the amount of accidents among young people.

In the last financial year, police issued 21,637 infringements to learner and provisional drivers, 590 more than the previous year, with St Marys drivers issued 132 infringements.

Records Centre’s uncertain future State Opposition says privatisation could result in staff cuts and major privacy concerns JADE ALIPRANDI

mployees of the State Records Office in Kingswood are concerned about what might happen if the operations of the public agency become privatised.

Not only is there the potential for cuts to staff if privatisation was to go ahead, but employees are concerned that private and confidential records of citizens in New South Wales could fall into the wrong hands, depending on the potential buyer.

Employees of the State Records Office, Miles Duggan and Bryan Bournes, are asking for answers after the idea of privatisation was put forward. “An email was put out stating the government was looking at options that would move the company forward, and privatisation wasn’t ruled out – going by the government’s track record, it could be a very likely possibility for the State Records Office,� Mr Bournes told the Weekender. “It’s just annoying because they have had consultants on it for the last two years and we still don’t have an idea of what’s going to happen or a solid reason as to why,� Mr Duggan said.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car, wrote to Minister for Finance, Services and Property, Dominic Perrottet, asking for answers.

Mr Perrottet’s response discussed moving the government-owned agency into the digital age. “Records management is an important function of Government and it is necessary that Government reviews existing operations periodically so we are best equipped to manage the diverse range of government agency records and data formats in the digital age,� said an extract of the letter from Mr Perrottet.

Ms Car said it’s not a satisfactory response, and the letter puts even more doubt in her head about the situation. “How many reviews do you need? Just tell us what’s going to happen,� she said. “One of the biggest concerns is private information being given to a private company and another concern is why would a private company purchase the operations if they weren’t hoping to make money – we may end up having to pay for access to the records.�

Ms Car said she will address the concerns again when Parliament resumes next week, saying staff cuts are also a major fear.

August 9 is Census night

uesday, August 9 is an important day for the future of Penrith.

It’s the 2016 national Census of Population and Housing, our once-infive-year chance to provide information to the Australian Government that will help shape the future of policies, and essentially the future of our lives in western Sydney.

Twice the amount of people than the 2011 Census are expected to fill out the survey this year, prompting the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to focus on a more efficient online submission process.

But still check your letter boxes over the coming weeks, as residents will receive a personal online login addressed to ‘The Resident’.

Inside will have details on how you fill out your Census survey online, or how to request a paper form that will be delivered within a few days with a reply paid envelope.

Every person in Australia on August 9 will have to either be counted in or fill out a Census survey, and residents who either forget or try to avoid filling out the survey will receive a visit to their home from a Census Field Officer as a reminder.

If you are staying in accommodation away from home you will be given a Census form when you arrive, or if you are at a friend’s house you need to be included in theirs.

If you are visiting Australia from overseas and are not an Australian citizen you still need to complete a Census, but if you are an Australian overseas at the time you do not need to fill one out.

ABS Statistician David Kalisch, has pleaded to everyone take the time to fill out the survey to contribute to a snapshot in time, and help shape the country’s future.

“The Census guides Government funding for essential services and infrastructure and is crucial in setting electoral boundaries, allocating Australian Government funding to states and territories, planning educational and health services and other infrastructure for local communities,” he said.

Filling out names and addresses will be compulsory this year and will not be permanently destroyed until August 2020, but Mr Kalisch said the ABS will never release identifiable data.

“There are extremely robust safeguards in place to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the information collected in the Census, including names and addresses,” he said.

Choosing a religion in the survey is optional, and the Census must be completed in English.

Glenmore Park man charged by child abuse investigators A man has been charged after allegedly producing and disseminating child abuse material.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad commenced an investigation into the production and dissemination of indecent photos of a 15-year-old girl.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives

executed a search warrant at a home in Glenmore Park about 7.20am on Tuesday.

During the search, police located and seized computers, hard drives, and cameras, which will undergo forensic examination.

A 55-year-old man was arrested at the location and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was subsequently charged with

‘incite act of indecency’, ‘production of child abuse material’, and two counts of ‘dissemination of child abuse material’.

He was refused bail and appeared at Penrith Local Court; where he was granted conditional bail and is due to reappear at the same court on Friday, September 23 2016.

Inquiries are continuing.

Man charged with manslaughter following Emu Plains blaze

New campaign aims to reduce pressure on Emergency room DALE DRINKWATER

nless you are suffering from a life-threatening injury or illness, don’t go to Nepean Hospital’s Emergency Department.

That’s the message from the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), which is urging locals to seek alternative health care before entering one of NSW’s busiest emergency departments.

Nepean Hospital sees over 67,000 emergency patients per year, and is struggling to see sick and injured patients within a required four-hour timeframe.

Director of Nepean Hospital’s Emergency Department, Dr Rod Bishop, suggests locals who don’t require emergency care could be cared for faster by other local health services.

“Emergency Departments prioritise treatment for people who need lifesaving care, which may mean there can be a wait for other patients to be seen,” he said.

“For non-life threatening conditions other local health services such as afterhours GP clinics and pharmacies may be able to provide the care you need, more quickly.”

olice have charged a man with manslaughter after another man died in a fire at O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub in Emu Plains last month.

At about 1.45am on Friday, June 10, emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway pub after reports of a fire.

On arrival, police located a 29-year-old man on the road with serious burns, and a 30-year-old nearby on Avoca Street, Emu Plains, also with serious burns.

The 29-year-old later died.

At about 11am last Thursday, July 21, police attended Concord Burns Unit, where they arrested and charged the 30-year-old man.

He remains under police guard in hospital. The man was charged with ‘manslaughter’, ‘destroying property by fire’ and ‘breach of bail conditions’.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court today, July 29.

The pair allegedly responsible for the fire were asked to leave the business at about 8pm on Thursday, June 9, with the attack happening a mere six hours later.

While the pub suffered damage, it has remained open since the incident.

“Serial drink driver” runs out of luck; sent to jail for 16 months

A man who racked up a slew of drink driving offences has been sentenced to a minimum of 12 months behind bars.

Magistrate Georgia Knight determined only full-time custody would suffice for Mark William Lomas, who fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with high-range drink driving, his sixth PCA offence since 1990.

Magistrate Knight labelled the accused a “serial drink driver” who had been dealt with “very leniently” in the past.

She said only jail time would reflect the seriousness of the offence, protect the community and act as specific deterrence.

“You’re very lucky no one has been hurt to date,” she said.

He was sentenced to 16 months jail with a 12-month non-parole period, disqualified for nine months and ordered to fit a mandatory interlock device to his car for 48 months.

Magistrates disagree over demerit point appeal

Samuel Rannaste has dodged a bullet after being confronted with a straight shooting magistrate.

Mr Rannaste faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday to appeal his demerit point suspension.

Magistrate Fiona Toose said he was lucky Magistrate Roger Clisdell, who was currently away, had given him the chance to prove himself as she wouldn’t have done the same.

“You wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell in front of me,” she said.

“You can’t keep appealing – it’s a joke.”

The matter was adjourned to August 4 before Magistrate Clisdell.

Man banned from Penrith and Hawkesbury areas

Bradley James Belbin has been granted strict conditional bail after allegedly supplying a commercial quantity of the drug

commonly known as ecstasy.

Mr Belbin, 25, appeared via video audio link at Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with supplying a commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, supplying an indictable quantity of prohibited drugs and recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Fiona Toose granted the Bathurst forklift driver bail with conditions, including that he not enter the Hawkesbury/Penrith areas unless for the purposes of legal advice or to attend court, that he and his older brother forfeit $5,000 each in surety as well as strict reporting obligations.

He is due back in court on September 16.

Suspended driver told to plan his day better

Flavio Robert Peter Canciani has had his licence suspension upheld on appeal.

Mr Canciani’s hopes for leniency were dashed when he fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after losing his licence due to excessive speed.

A no-nonsense Magistrate Fiona Toose noted the appellant had been banned previously for similar offences and blasted his justification that the infringement took place in a remote location.

“You’ve got to stop putting your foot down. If you’ve got to be somewhere plan your day better,” she said.

“Did you drive to court today?” she questioned.

“Well you better get someone to pick up your car – your suspension starts today.”

He was suspended for three months.

“Stupid mistake” resulted in horrific injuries

A man who continually flouted the law by driving unlicenced has narrowly avoided jail.

Abdallah Ibrahim told Penrith Local Court his decision to take a motorbike for a spin was a “stupid mistake” and one he paid for dearly, suffering a debilitating accident two streets from home.

The court heard the defendant suffered a broken leg, pelvis and was scheduled to undergo an operation to remove metal plates from his leg and back in November.

“Mr Ibrahim, you cannot afford to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle – you’ll end up in full-time custody for these types of matters,” Magistrate Stephen Corry warned when the accused vowed never to repeat the offence.

Mr Ibrahim said he foolishly lost his licence due to unpaid fines when he was younger, which sparked his offending.

He was handed a six-month suspended sentence, ordered to enter into a good behaviour bond and disqualified for a further two years.

Magistrate Corry confirmed the suspension was on top of his already lengthy ban.

“There are some young men who will be old age pensioners before they are able to get their licence back,” Mr Corry said.

Man gets one last chance to complete traffic program

An Army reservist has been given one last chance to complete a traffic offender program.

Shaun James Ashman appeared before Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with negligent driving and driving while suspended.

The defendant told the court that he had been away on assignment and missed his appointment.

“I only drove that once, your Honour,” Mr Ashman insisted.

A deadpan Magistrate Ian McRae said he was always amazed that police were able to detect people on the one occasion they were driving without a licence.

“You’ve got to get your act together,” he said.

The matter was stood over to August 1.

Appeal falls on deaf ears

Claire Tolentino has been rapped over the knuckles for appealing her licence suspension for a second time.

“Since the last occasion you’ve gone on to commit two further offences,” an incredulous Magistrate Fiona Toose said at Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

“As far as I’m concerned, Mam, you have little or no regard for the road rules.

“Next time you get in a car hopefully you’ll be more responsible.”

In a last ditch attempt Ms Tolentino asked if she could do a traffic offender program, but her plea fell on deaf ears.

“My decision today is final. Thank you, you’re excused,” Magistrate Toose said curtly.

Her three-month suspension was upheld.

Conviction and fine for man who assaulted police

A man who assaulted police after being cast “as the bad guy” will pay for his crime.

Penrith Local Court heard Nigel John Beckham, 37, was trying to protect his two daughters from a man on Australia Day when police intervened.

Mr Beckham’s lawyer argued his client, who was batoned, capsicum sprayed and detained for half-an-hour, had already suffered enough for a non-battery assault.

Magistrate Ian McRae said the shift in people’s attitude towards police, especially young people, was worrying and deterrence was required for the accused and others.

He was convicted and fined $300.

Woman escapes conviction over driving charge

Chloe Zammit has walked away from court without a conviction despite pleading guilty to driving while suspended.

Ms Zammit told Penrith Local Court last Thursday she was under the impression she had paid her fine when she was pulled over at Kingswood on June 16.

Magistrate Fiona Toose dismissed the charge and ordered her to undertake a traffic offender program.

Oxley Park: Police investigate suspicious blaze

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a house fire at Oxley Park this week, treating it as suspicious.

At about 10pm on Monday, July 25, emergency services were called to a home on Gregory Avenue following reports of a fire.

On arrival officers saw plumes of smoke coming from the home.

NSW Fire and Rescue officers worked to extinguish the fire that was burning inside.

A crime scene was established while further investigations are carried out by detectives from St Marys Local Area Command.

The occupants were not home at the time of the fire.

At this stage police are treating the fire as suspicious and would like to speak with anyone who may have information that could assist.

St Marys: Woman and three children forced to hide in room

A woman and her three children were forced to hide in a back bedroom when a man allegedly aggressively forced entry into their home last week.

At about 10pm on Monday, July 18, a 37-year-old woman and her three children were inside their home on Pages Road, St Marys, when it’s alleged a 37-year-old Dharruk man knocked on the front door.

The woman told him to go away but a short time later, the man returned and allegedly jumped the side gate, damaging both the hinges on it.

He knocked on several windows of the premises and returned to the front door, where he allegedly kicked the front door until the locking mechanism broke.

He entered the premises with the woman taking her three children to a rear room.

The man has opened a cupboard and emptied it on the floor.

A male witness then heard the commotion, entered the property and removed the 37-year-old man and contacted police.

He was arrested and was charged with a range of offences.

He will appear in Penrith local court on Thursday, August 18.

Kingswood: Man to front court after police discover drugs

A man was stopped by police while he was driving and was allegedly found to have a prohibited substance in his possession.

At about 1.25am on Sunday, July 24, police were patrolling the Kingswood area when they stopped a motor vehicle on The Northern Road.

Police spoke with the driver, a 38-yearold Glendenning man.

After speaking with the man, a bag he was carrying was searched.

It’s alleged that two credit cards belonging to a third party were found inside the bag, leading to his car being searched.

It’s alleged a container was found with what is believed to be methalampetamine inside the car.

The man was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen’.

He will appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, August 15.

Jamisontown: Police officer injured during arrest

A police officer dislocated his shoulder when attempting to arrest a man who allegedly resisted police numerous times.

At about 5.15pm on Tuesday, July 19, police spoke to a 25-year-old man at Tench Avenue, Jamisontown.

It’s alleged police located a small amount of a prohibited drug inside his car. The man was about to be arrested when he allegedly attempted to get back into his car.

A scuffle then erupted prior to the man being arrested and charged.

Royal Commissions Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced a Royal Commission into allegations of the abuse of minors held in detention. The announcement follows the broadcast of a program on ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ depicting teenagers in a youth detention centre in the Northern Territory being mentally and physically abused, shackled to chairs, stripped naked, locked in isolation, and even subjected to tear gas.

As the nation reels following these horrifying revelations, it is a disturbingly familiar feeling of shock and surprise.

How could this type of thing be happening in a modern age right under our noses?

A similar furore surrounded the recent and ongoing Royal Commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse, which in a large part focused on Churches and abusive members of the clergy.

So what is a Royal Commission, and why has the Prime Minister taken this action?

A Royal Commission is similar to a court case, but takes a form of a Public Inquiry whereby a Commissioner is appointed to thoroughly investigate and report on the issue at hand.

For example, the child abuse Royal Commission set up in 2013 was armed with the task of investigating allegations of child sexual abuse in schools, Churches and other institutions, including organisations like the Salvation

Army, YMCA NSW, Scouts Australia and other institutions.

A Royal Commission has the power to force a person to appear before the Commission at a hearing to give evidence or to produce documents, and the Commissioner and his or her legal representatives can question and examine such people like what would occur during cross examination in a court case. The Commission can also issue search warrants via the AFP, and invite members of the public to give evidence of their experiences in relation to the issue in question.

Following the conclusion of the Commission, a report is provided to the government. Whilst the recommendations of the Commission are not necessarily binding, it is quite common that a government will enact most of these recommendations into law.

I would like to assure the community that the Queen Street upgrades will continue to completion, boosting visitor numbers, business and shopper satisfaction as well as looking fantastic.

Work will be completed as quickly as possible and to the high standard in the original contract, despite the original contractor going into receivership.

The current situation is regrettable but was unforeseeable.

We find ourselves in the same position as City of Sydney and Camden Councils who also had projects underway with Hargraves Urban.

Council follows stringent legislative guidelines in awarding tenders, and the company was independently rated as financially sound when we awarded the contract.

Council’s first priority is ensuring community safety. Our staff have repaired the road crossings on Belar, Phillip and Queen Streets, and are currently repairing concrete, paving and other potential hazards. Street signs were installed this week.

We are negotiating with contractors to complete the western side of Queen Street as soon as possible and are

looking at options to ensure work also continues on the eastern side.

Some people are concerned the charm of Queen Street has been lost with the removal of the leafy cover it was known for.

However the existing trees were causing significant damage to pavements, and when work started it quickly became clear their roots were a tangled mess, intertwined into underground utilities and requiring immediate attention.

Replacement trees, better suited to the streetscape, will be planted.

I would like to thank the local business community for working with Council and the St Marys Town Centre Corporation throughout the planning and works.

We appreciate this is a very difficult time for them and are working to ensure further disruptions are minimised.

Council will support the Corporation in hosting a launch event for the community to enjoy in celebration of Queen Street’s new life.

Pea Pod helps doctors find answers Research study at Nepean Hospital is assisting doctors and parents manage premature babies DALE DRINKWATER

ur region’s most vulnerable babies are ready to get their four-month check-up in Nepean Clinical School’s state-of-the-art Pea Pod. 75 premature babies from Nepean Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit are already part of the Pea Pod study, to measure their growth, and help determine what factors affect it.

The Pea Pod was introduced to the Sydney University’s Nepean Clinical School at Nepean Hospital in February, and babies born under 29 weeks or weighing less than one kilogram at birth are now coming back for their four-month check-ups.

Senior Neonatologist, Dr Girish Deshpande, has been instrumental in the research project that aims to monitor premature babies who are at risk of not feeding and growing properly.

He said the Pea Pod is the first way doctors can truly understand how a baby is growing.

“For adults when we try to measure obesity we have a look at their body mass index (BMI), but for babies there is nothing like BMI,” he said.

“Up until the Pea Pod, the only way we could measure babies is weight, this is the first opportunity to measure the baby’s growth correctly.”

The Pea Pod works by measuring the baby’s whole body composition and changes in body fat, and with further research will be able to help doctors determine what factors could be affecting their growth.

Dr Deshpande said the benefit of this is that mothers with premature babies could soon get specific nutrition information to help their baby grow better and be healthier.

“So far we know a baby’s weight and composition depends on factors like their mother’s nutrition – conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, specific medications, or if a mother is using any illicit substances like drugs or is smoking,” he said.

Despite significant advances in neonatal care, babies born prematurely are at significant risk of growth restriction and are at increased risk at developing obesity, hypertension, coronary artery disease and stroke.

The study is currently in research stage, and by 2018 the Nepean Clinical School hopes to have seen over 1,800 babies.

Council’s vision becomes reality Parking still a major concern but exciting new developments are a step closer to coming to fruition enrith Council’s bold vision to re-imagine two key City Centre sites has paid off.

A site on Reserve Street will be transformed into a quality development for older residents, looking to downsize while staying in the Penrith area.

Council has chosen award-winning Greengate Development Pty Ltd to develop the site into a premier aged care facility.

Plans for the second site, in Union Road, are still being explored and will include an extra 1000 car park spaces.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said both sites fall within, or next to, the Living Well Precinct which will become a modern village for baby boomers who want to be close to services and amenities.

“Our call for bold and innovative solutions for these sites had been incredibly successful and will help deliver the Penrith Progression blueprint for the City Centre,” Cr McKeown said.

“We have been looking for partners to help grow the local economy, attract investment and create jobs – as well as cater for our parking needs – and this process has revealed exciting opportunities for our Regional City.”

The proposed Reserve Street development includes independent living apartments, a 24-hour aged care home plus additional community and medical services.

Before developing the site, an agreement on the land will be finalised and a Development Application (DA) process including community consultation undertaken.

“We are looking forward to working with Council to create a great community that is tailored to local seniors,” Director of Greengate, Andrew Sweeney said.

“In fact, one of the first tasks we have set ourselves when finalising the design over the coming months is to meet with local seniors, find out what is important to them and what their priorities are. Our goal is to provide a vibrant location in the heart of the city of Penrith.”

Council expects the development will be completed by 2020.

In regards to the Union Road site, Council has received numerous bold ideas from experienced investors to develop the site in a variety of ways. This includes residential, office and commercial uses, as well as parking, to support the City Centre.

Hospital upgrade I see that NSW Premier Michael Baird has promised an upgrade to Nepean Hospital but the announcement comes too late to stop the seat of Lindsay falling to Labor at the recent election. The Premier should have been able to gauge the mood of the electorate with regard to the importance of the hospital during the election campaign and made the announcement then because there was ample evidence available that showed just how important an issue this really was.

The PM also made the same mistake and has paid the price. The Premier obviously sees this issue as a real vote winner and it will be interesting to see just what this upgrade will entail but the news is still most welcome.

Laura’s City2Surf challenge is about more than just the exercise

he annual City2Surf event is just around the corner, and Jordan Springs local Laura Watson is taking part for the first time, but not just for the exercise.

Ms Watson is raising funds for Rare Cancers Australia, a charity chosen by her friend, Lisa Magill, who was diagnosed at 30-years-old with a terminal cancer, the first of that kind diagnosed in Australia.

After coming across Ms Magill’s blog, Ms Watson said she was instantly drawn to her story.

“I didn’t want to just do the run for the hell of it, I wanted to choose something to raise money for and I thought of Lisa straight away,” Ms Watson said.

“Her blog is called Terminally Fabulous and her story is just so inspiring – even though this is happening to her, she is still living a fabulous life.”

Ms Watson will take on the famous 14km course on Sunday, August 14.

“I’m a little bit nervous,” Ms Watson admitted.

The infringement notices were issued between February and May this year, and restaurants could have rectified issues since.

The bus stop opposite Nepean Hospital in Derby Street will get a new Climate Adapted People Shelter (CAPS). The cool and “smart” bus shelter was picked as the winning design in a CAPS competition judged by a panel, including Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown. Cr McKeown said the smart shelter will provide better shelter from the elements including heat, cooler temperatures and wind.

“I’m especially pleased that this bus stop will get the smart shelter as it is a high use stop including many elderly and infirm: those most affected by the elements, especially heat,” she said.

The shelter will have built-in smart technology to collect data to analyse and refine the design. Cr McKeown congratulated all finalists and design winners, MM Creative.

The Overlander Hotel in Cambridge Gardens could be receiving an overhaul. Council has received a development application to upgrade the local pub at the cost of a whopping $1.9 million. The plans include everything from new tiles to the downpipes, signage, extending the car park, landscaping and roofing. The application is yet to be determined.

Penrith Council has issued infringement notices to several local restaurants since February through the NSW Food Authority. The most recent was Akira Sushi in Nepean Village, who failed to have accessible hand washing facilities. Simo’s Takeaway in Colyton received two infringement notices, regarding pests and cleanliness. Council came down hard on Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in the Panthers Precinct by issuing one infringement notice for not having

enrith Lions Club, along with local community members, will take part in National Tree Day this weekend, with the club having planted over 5200 trees over their contributing years.

The Lions Club aim to plant around 70 trees at a South Penrith site at Gadara Drive, off Kiparra Avenue and York Road, this Sunday, July 31.

Chairman of the club, Barry LeavettBrown, said National Tree Day was a great cause.

“National Tree Day is a fulfilling opportunity to connect with our community,” he said.

“It’s about doing something good for our local environment and benefiting your health by spending some time in nature.”

Almost 300,000 people took part in National Tree Day last year at over 3,500 sites across the country. Over 1.2 million native trees and shrubs were planted.

“I’m a hands-on worker so helping with National Tree Day is great for me and great for the community,” Mr LeavettBrown said.

“I’m always happy to help with anything to do with nature and the environment.”

fter growing the business from the ground up, Goldenfield Growers in Wallacia has been named Produce Grower of the Year at this year’s Sydney Markets Fresh Awards.

Kim Ung, son of Kim Nguon Ung and Sokhom Tok Ung, told the Weekender the family couldn’t believe their business won such a prestigious award.

“We were all really excited and thrilled to have been named Produce Grower of the Year,” he said.

“We couldn’t believe that our hard work is paying off.”

Over 500 independent retailers and growers participated in the awards.

The Ung family have been in the growing business since the early 1990s.

“My dad just enjoys watching the crops grow up and how they grow every day,” Mr Ung said.

“We love being able to have fresh produce and being able to share that around with everyone and providing others with the opportunity to have fresh produce.”

Students make all the right moves Checkmates! New friendships formed as major chess tournament attracts plenty of local schools JADE ALIPRANDI

tudents from schools across the Penrith region have come together to compete at the ninth annual Inter Schools Chess Tournament.

The competition saw 11 primary schools take part last Tuesday, while on Wednesday, eight high schools battled it out for the title.

Hobartville Public School won the Primary competition while Penrith High won the High Schools competition for a fourth straight year.

Making up 13-and-a-half points out of a possible 21, Team A from Cambridge Park Public School took out third place in their competition, and said the best part was making new friends.

“It feels really good to have placed third,” Year 6 student, Storm Waratah said.

“I enjoyed being able to move around to different tables and talking with new people; it was a whole lot of fun especially when you love playing chess.”

Deputy Principal, Neil Bourke, said he was proud of the team’s effort.

“They did really well this year, I think they made a bit of an improvement on last year,” he said.

taff from the Nepean Cancer Care Centre are taking part in this year’s Dry July fundraiser, sitting on top of the teams leaderboard with almost $25,000 raised so far.

Known as the Nepean Cancer Carers, the team of 23 are taking part in Dry July to purchase patient comfort and care items to improve the experience for patients at the centre.

With their efforts paying off so far, Medical Oncologist at the centre, Dr Deme Karikios, said the team had no problem giving up alcohol for a month.

“We are passionate about making the journey of our patients more comfortable, so we decided to make this small sacrifice of abstaining from alcohol for one month to raise some vital funds to improve the experience of patients

within the centre. The concept of Dry July is a brilliant idea,” he said.

The team have been working hard with fundraising activities including trivia nights, cake stalls, sausage sizzles and raffles.

Dr Karikios said the local team couldn’t be happier with their current achievements.

“Getting a diagnosis of cancer is obviously never easy and sometimes the treatments can be really hard too, so being able to do something extra to make our patients more comfortable is wonderful,” he said.

“Fundraising is a great way to do something extra for those that need it and more people should do it. It feels fantastic knowing you are helping people who need it most.”

our logo is very often the first introduction prospective customers have to your business. Not only does having a logo provide legitimacy, it provides brand recognition. You are competing to be seen and heard amongst many other businesses and companies, and your logo needs to help you stand out and be remembered.

A good logo should summarise the uniqueness of your business and begin to give your customers an impression of who and what you are.

Even though your logo is not the only aspect of your ‘brand’, it helps to set the guidelines.

A good logo designer will take you through a process of working out what you want to communicate to your customers. What emotions do you want to elicit? What assumptions about your business do you want people to make when they see your logo?

A designer then uses fonts, colours, symbols and so on, to create a visual representation of your business. From then on, all your promotional materials will have a clear direction and you will

have consistency in your marketing messages.

When your business is new, this process can be quite overwhelming. But it is good to remember that your logo can change and adapt over time.

Think of the ways the Apple logo has changed, and other large companies such as Google. You are not always going to have the vision now for what your business will look like, and who it will target, years down the track.

So although it is important to capture the essence of your business today, be assured that it is OK to adapt it in the future to reflect changes to your business.

Logo design can sometimes be viewed as an unnecessary expense when a business is starting up. And the costs can be daunting when you are trying to operate on a shoestring! But when you realise the impact that a good logo (and a bad or non-existent one) has on the image you project, logo design will shift to being viewed as an investment, rather than a cost.

his is my 360th and final column for this great paper. The time has come for my more than capable colleagues to share their knowledge and wisdom with you. I thank you for reading my column over the last seven years, and have enjoyed sharing my experiences and advice on everything in business with you. I want to talk about mindset, which is such an important part of life, let alone business. The quote “If you knew how powerful your thoughts were, you would never think a negative thought” is so true. Too many people focus on the negative constantly instead of focusing on what they can control.

Above all things, it is how you handle yourself that determines success or not.

After some study, here are some things successful people do: Focusing on what matters: There are only 24 hours in a day so where are you spending your time? Successful people know what has to happen day in and day

out. It’s getting the necessary work done before watching videos.

Make their own luck: Putting yourself in the right place takes effort. Don’t hold yourself back by waiting for the perfect timing or idea.

Being optimistic: When you think positively, you have a better possibility of being successful. Negative thoughts just destroy your mind and everything that you work on.

Be different: Be unconventional and take risks to get the result that you desire. If things that used to work aren’t anymore, then it’s time to change.

They follow through: If you say that you are going to do something, do it.

Learn from failures: Whether something worked or not, you must analyse the situation afterwards. Successful people always step back from projects, look at the results and learn from failures.

Remain humble: Success doesn’t have to come with an ego. Many successful people don’t have one. Hold yourself accountable for every aspect of your life.

This is how you’ll remain focused and humble.

Women are the focus of Dental Health Week new survey from the Australian Dental Association (ADA) has uncovered mums across the country, despite being at increased risk of gum disease and permanent tooth damage, are jeopardising the health of their teeth and gums by avoiding a visit to the dentist during pregnancy (53 per cent).

The Australian Women and Dental Health Survey released as part of Dental Health Week (August 1-7, 2016), which

sought the views of women at different stages in their life, comes as a concern to the nation’s experts who warn it’s crucial for women to consult their dentist during pregnancy, as hormone changes can make gums more prone to bleeding, swelling and inflammation – which can lead to an increased risk of gum disease resulting in tooth loss.

38 per cent of pregnant women have experienced symptoms of gum disease,

such as bleeding gums (21.3 per cent), gum sensitivity (16 per cent) and sensitive teeth (13.4 per cent). Three quarters (76 per cent) were not aware that morning sickness can lead to permanent damage to teeth, and many believe that it is not safe to visit the dentist while pregnant.

“The prevalence of gum disease during pregnancy is high, with one in two pregnant women affected. Morning sickness can cause permanent damage

to teeth, and frequent vomiting can also coat teeth with strong stomach acids, which can weaken the tooth enamel and increase the risk of tooth decay and erosion. Clearly we need to do more to dispel the myths around the danger of visiting the dentist when pregnant,” Dentist and Chair of the ADA’s Oral Health Committee, Dr Peter Alldritt said.

“Getting a check-up during pregnancy is not only safe, but important for a woman’s dental health, and the health of her unborn child. Pregnancy is a crucial stage in a woman’s life, and maintaining oral health is directly related to good overall health. Gum disease and dental damage can be managed during pregnancy as long as women take appropriate preventative steps to help protect their teeth – such as visiting the dentist on top of brushing and flossing daily.”

The ADA is putting women at the forefront of Dental Health Week 2016 and is encouraging those who are seeking information on how to protect their teeth and gums during periods of hormonal change, such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause, to visit www.dentalhealthweek.com.au.

In addition to concerns regarding the oral health of Australian women during pregnancy, the survey also found that two thirds of Australian teenage girls going through puberty don’t regularly visit the dentist.

Also for those entering menopause, almost half have experienced signs of gum disease including sensitive teeth and dry mouth.

ery few people who had seen Penrith’s performances against Cronulla and Parramatta could have anticipated the side’s first class effort against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium last Friday.

Delivering their best performance of the season, the Panthers played for the full 80 minutes, ambushed the Broncos on their home turf and displayed the kind of football that fans have been waiting to see for more than five months.

It was a win that has sent the Panthers back into the top eight and with a little over a month to go before the finals, the side now controls its own destiny as far as a top eight finish is concerned.

This Saturday afternoon’s clash with the New Zealand Warriors is critical for

Penrith’s finals hopes. A win would put the Panthers four points clear of the Warriors on the competition table and with a reasonably soft run home, could be enough to secure a top eight finish as long as there’s no embarrassing stumbles against teams like the Roosters and Knights in the coming weeks.

Penrith has already beaten the Warriors this year – a 30-18 victory in Christchurch back in mid-May – but it’ll be a very different Panthers outfit that takes the field in Auckland this Saturday.

On that day Jamie Soward produced a confidence-boosting individual performance to lead his side to victory, but just a couple of months later, the 30-year-old is half a world away in England and the Panthers have ushered in a new, youthful brigade to take the side forward.

There is no doubt that the chief playmakers of that youthful brigade, Nathan Cleary and Bryce Cartwright, would have gained enormous confidence from beating the Broncos at Suncorp.

But perhaps what was most pleasing was the way the side’s experienced players stood up and ensured things remained on track for the full 80 minutes. Trent Merrin again clocked up over 200 metres and made 32 tackles, while Matt Moylan was busy throughout the contest, clocking up 138 metres.

The same thing needs to happen this Saturday against a Warriors side that is about as inconsistent as the NRL’s video Bunker. As they showed last week against the Raiders, the Warriors can score points very quickly and make a game out of a seemingly one-sided contest, but too often they fall asleep and allow opposition teams to dominate them for long periods of a game.

Like they did against Brisbane, the Panthers need to control the contest from the outset, hang on to the ball and play as much of the game in the Warriors’ half as possible.

The Panthers do need to be patient, however. The Warriors will eventually get

frustrated and the opportunities will open up for players like Cartwright and Moylan, but if they try to do too much too early, it could be to their detriment.

Whichever team manages to dominate this game in the middle of the ruck should walk away with victory, but a high error rate from both sides wouldn’t surprise me – in fact, this could be a very frustrating game to watch.

support staff next year with veteran trainer Ron Palmer (pictured) among those who will be leaving the club. It’s unlikely there will be any bad blood between the club and Palmer, with Panthers boss Phil Gould promising to “look after” the rugby league icon, who he labelled a “great man”. Holden Cup coach Cameron Ciraldo is likely to survive the changes but Alex Melville is another long-time staff member set to be shown the door.

The Panthers are resigned to losing former NSW Cup coach Garth Brennan, who is likely to take up an opportunity to coach in the English Super League. Brennan is also a problematic proposition for the Panthers as he still lives in Newcastle and isn’t available seven days a week.

» Peter Wallace has signed a well-earned

new two year contract with the Panthers.

I’m told Penrith originally only wanted a one year contract extension for the halfback-turned-hooker, but Wallace held his ground and pushed for two years.

“There’s a great bunch of boys here at the Panthers and the club is going in the right direction with everything off the field as well,” Wallace said on Monday.

» The explosive war of words between

Panthers CEO Corey Payne and Rugby League World Cup boss Michael Brown reached a dramatic conclusion last Friday when Brown resigned from his post. Payne had penned an open letter expressing his major disappointment that western Sydney wouldn’t host any World Cup matches despite being rugby league heartland. Brown reportedly retaliated with an expletive-laden voicemail to Payne, which ultimately proved his downfall. The NRL tried to sell Brown’s

departure as a resignation, but nobody is buying it.

» The Panthers are hoping that gun five-

eighth Te Maire Martin returns to first grade against the Roosters next weekend. Martin’s return would allow Bryce Cartwright to shift back into the forwards where he belongs. The youngster, who starred in his debut game against Brisbane back in round three, was spotted training with Nathan Cleary on Monday, with the partnership showing great signs.

» Waqa Blake was very shaky after that

incident against the Broncos last Friday night in which he fell to the ground heavily after trying to take a bomb. Panthers officials were a little worried about the lanky centre but he pulled up extremely well on Saturday morning.

» If the Panthers do make the finals this

year and qualify for a home final, it’ll be played at either ANZ Stadium or Allianz Stadium – even if it is against an out-oftown team, potentially setting the NRL up for an extremely embarrassing crowd.

Penrith would qualify for a ‘home final’ if they managed to finish fifth or sixth on the ladder, both of which remain possible scenarios. Panthers boss Phil Gould indicated on Twitter this week that the club wouldn’t be complaining, saying “opposition fans deserve [the] right to follow their team in finals”. However, he did leave the door open for a possible plea to the NRL, saying that Cronulla deserve to play their home final at Shark Park if it’s against an out-of-town team.

» Nine’s coverage of Penrith’s match

against Brisbane last Friday night just managed to scrape into the top 20 shows

of the night, with 418,000 viewers (Sydney and Brisbane only). Fox Sports continues to surprise with its high ratings for games that are on free-to-air, with the Panthers/Broncos game grabbing 204,000 viewers.

Since arriving at the foot of the Mountains a few years ago, Fisher-Harris said much of his family haven’t seen him play in the flesh as a member of the Panthers.

“There will be a lot of family at this game, I couldn’t tell you how many,” he said.

“I’ll try and get some tickets for them but I think they’ve bought some too.”

Fisher-Harris will be hoping his good run of form carries over across the ditch after he put in an outstanding performance against the Broncos last Friday night.

The Junior Kiwi played 68 minutes last week at Suncorp – scoring a try and racking up 27 tackles to boot.

Fisher-Harris said he’s enjoying the increased workload and increasing number of tries.

“I think I scored two tries all of last year and now I have four so far this season,” he said.

ith boom five-eighth Te Maire Martin not too far away from a return to first grade, Panthers captain Matt Moylan is excited at the prospect of potentially having one of the most lethal spines in

the competition.

While the popular fullback isn’t too keen on a permanent shift to the halves himself, he is looking forward to seeing Martin – who has been sidelined since April with a shoulder injury – back in the NRL. “It’s only going to help us even more when he (Martin) does come back,” Moylan said.

“Just having another ball player in there that can threaten the line could help us out more… but I’m still not sure exactly what will happen there and when he will return.”

Extra Time spotted Martin and fellow rookie half Nathan Cleary teaming up for an unscheduled morning training session on Monday, in what could be the best sign yet the pair are ready to take on the NRL together.

Currently Penrith’s number six jumper is occupied by backrower Bryce Cartwright, who many believe played his best game as a makeshift half during last week’s big win over Brisbane.

Cartwright has come under plenty of scrutiny since becoming Penrith’s fiveeighth in recent weeks but appeared a lot more composed and comfortable in the role last Friday night.

“Bryce has been going good and Friday was probably one of his better games at six, especially when he took the line on and played a bit squarer,” Moylan said.

“He’s a big man to stop and when he’s threatening that line, it adds another dimension to our team.”

While remaining rather coy on the subject, Moylan indicated Cartwright will move back to his more familiar surroundings of the second-row once Martin returns from injury.

“Bryce is one of those players where you want him playing on both sides of the field, you don’t really want to stick him on an edge and limit what he can do in a game,” the Origin star said.

“I’m not too sure what will happen with that sort of stuff but you want a guy like Bryce getting his hands on the ball and getting involved.”

Te Maire Martin has been named at fiveeighth for Penrith’s clash with Newtown in reserve grade this weekend. If he gets through the game unscathed, he may return to first grade next week.

Meanwhile, Moylan admits it will be a tough road trip to Auckland this week when the Panthers aim for three straight wins for the first time this season.

“It can be tough but the last time we were there in May, we enjoyed the week, so hopefully it all goes to plan again,” he said.

CRUCIAL GAME LOOMS After a pretty close call against the Parramatta Eels the previous week at home, the trip to Suncorp to play the Broncos was seemingly going to be a tough challenge for the Panthers last Friday evening.

For any team, playing at Suncorp in itself can be a massive hurdle to get over and any sign of weakness from the visiting team can signal a tough day at the office.

However, the Panthers came out firing on all fronts and proved just far too good for Wayne Bennett’s men. The young players for the Panthers seemed unfazed by the occasion and it was fabulous to see some of the new combinations really starting to gel and play to a committed game plan, whilst also playing a really entertaining style of play.

All in all, it was a convincing victory and one that should give the squad a huge

amount of confidence as they head across the Tasman later in the week to take on the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Griffin will not be allowing the boys to get ahead of themselves, despite the strong victory against the Broncos.

Griffin, like his players, knows how tough it is to play the Warriors at home at any time of the season. Importantly, if the Panthers are to really consolidate their place in the top eight as we move into the back end of the season, they cannot afford a hiccup in New Zealand and Griffin will be counting on a good week of preparation and a stress free trip over the Tasman to continue preparations for the match.

I am tipping a big match from the Panthers, knowing just how crucial a win is this weekend.

Victory against the Broncos came as a surprise to many NRL pundits but that was certainly not the case within the walls of the Panthers Rugby League Academy.

For the players, coaches and staff the excellent result was simply a realisation of what we all know the team is capable of.

Momentum is everything at this time of the year and back-to-back wins have the Panthers travelling nicely.

This week’s clash with the Warriors in Auckland will be a stern test before the Panthers return to Pepper Stadium for an all-important showdown with the Roosters. We really need all our members and fans to get behind the team and show their #pantherpride on the run to the finals.

I want to congratulate Peter Wallace on his new two-year deal and Trent Merrin on extending his contract with the club until the end of 2020.

Peter epitomises so much of what the Panthers are about.

The way he has handled his shift from the halves to hooker is testament to both the quality of his character and the depth of his ability.

In his short time at the Panthers, Trent has proven himself an inspiring leader both on and off the field.

To have a player of his calibre further commit his future to this club reinforces everything we believe in and everything we are working towards.

He also does a reasonable Borat impression!

On that note, congratulations must also go to Jeremy Latimore on completing his Bachelor of Business at the University of Wollongong. It is a credit to Jeremy that over the last four years he was able to balance his studies with the demands of full-time rugby league, while also looking after a wife and two young children.

Martin will make his long-awaited return to the pitch after injuring his shoulder against Cronulla in Round 8.

The young Kiwi prodigy was due to be out for the rest of the season but his early return will no doubt be pivotal in Penrith’s run to the finals.

Also returning for the first time this season is young PNG forward Stanton Albert, who will come off the bench against the Jets.

Saturday will be a happy day for Albert who suffered two serious knee injuries back to back.

After enjoying last weekend off due to a bye, the sixth-placed Panthers have named a very strong team to battle the fifth-placed Jets at Henson Park.

streak of 15 almost came to end last Friday night after the Brisbane Broncos gave the competition leaders an almighty scare.

Penrith welcomed back Robert Jennings from injury while the side was also boosted by the inclusion of Dylan Edwards, Tyrone May and Oliver Clark.

The Broncos opened the scoring with a

double to lead 10-0 before the Panthers managed to score before half-time through Corey Waddell, to go into the sheds down 10-6.

The second half proved error riddled for both sides but it was the Panthers who crossed in the dying minutes through winger Daniel Brown.

Jarome Luai slotted the conversion from out wide to give Penrith a 12-10 victory.

This Saturday afternoon the Panthers will battle the Warriors in Auckland.

» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys have now

won three straight games after they defeated Blacktown Workers 32-22 during the latest round of the Ron Massey Cup competition.

St Marys got off to a superb start, scoring two tries through Luke Nadurutalo and John Tuliatu in the opening 10 minutes. Blacktown got one back before St Marys fullback Alan Eisenhuth crossed to make it 14-6.

Some costly errors either side of the break allowed Blacktown to score a double and take a 16-14 half-time lead.

However, St Marys managed to hit straight back with a double of their own to make it 26-16 with 20 minutes to go.

St Marys’ defence held firm before Blacktown scored a 100m try to get within four with five minutes to go.

Fortunately, St Marys managed to hang on and finish with a try on the bell through Tuliatu, who earned his double.

This Sunday St Marys will aim for fourin-a-row when they travel to Storey Park to battle the Asquith Magpies at 3pm.

O

ver the last couple of years I’ve been lucky enough to speak to some of the biggest names in the Australian country music industry.

One thing I’ve noticed about the genre, aside from the fact it’s made up of a genuinely nice bunch of people, is the unwavering friendship and camaraderie between performers.

This support, and the dedication of fans, is likely a big part of the reason why a decades-long career is so achievable for artists like Beccy Cole.

“I think the capacity for longevity in this particular genre of music is probably something that I feel is the saving grace as far as my ability to keep going and not be a spring chicken,” Beccy explained.

“I think it’s what you make of it and the work you’re prepared to do but I certainly find the loyalty of the fan base makes it possible for people to still invest in my talent.

“Record companies and agencies still want to touch me because the audience still wants to buy tickets so I’m very blessed in that sense.

“I don’t want to slow down, I love the opportunities.”

And those opportunities sure aren’t going to waste for the singer-songwriter,

who last year released a new album titled ‘Sweet Rebecca’ and a tell all autobiography Poster Girl.

This year Beccy has been focused on touring with all-female band The Sisters of Twang, which is made up of fellow performers that Beccy has met over the last 20 years.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for a bit of girl power and it’s good fun to be making music together,” Beccy said of the band.

“Over the years I’ve toured with many different bands and wonderful musicians but it’s pretty much a bloke’s world.

“It’s not any particular feminist statement I’m making, I’m just going why not put the girls together because each one of them has a story about being a little bit overlooked because they’re not a guy.”

Beccy is also hoping that The Sisters of Twang may help inspire the next generation of country music artists.

“We have a lot of kids that come along to the show and I love that there might be a little girl looking up at the band going ‘oh, maybe I could be a drummer’,” she said.

Along with The Sisters of Twang Beccy is joined on tour by her partner and fellow country music artist Libby O’Donovan.

“To get to be on stage together is wonderful, I get very proud every night,” Beccy said.

“My favourite thing while I’m getting ready back stage is hearing her warming up the crowd and entertaining them.

“It’s a wonderful working partnership.”

As far as her future plans go, Beccy already has her sights set on her next release.

“I feel ready to start collating these songs I’ve got ready for the next album.

I’m not really wanting to slow down at all,” she said.

Beccy is heading to Rooty Hill RSL next month.

After almost a decade away from the ‘Bourne’ franchise, Matt Damon will be returning to cinemas this week to reprise his most defining role.

Years after his disappearance Jason Bourne comes out of the shadows to find himself in an unstable world where

As the former CIA assassin comes to a true understanding of his identity, he is also being hunted down by hacker and counterinsurgency expert Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) sent to find him by CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones).

While the CIA attempts to find their man, Bourne is drawn back into action when he uncovers a sinister network that is hell bent on power.

‘Jason Bourne’ sees Damon once again teaming up with ‘The Bourne Suprem-

acy’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ director Paul Greengrass.

Damon is also joined by Julia Stiles who reprises her role as former contact Nicky Parsons.

It is yet to be seen whether ‘Jason Bourne’ will live up to the earlier films in the Bourne franchise; but with Damon and Greengrass back on board it’s hard to imagine this film being a flop.

Ê After auditioning for a role on ‘Neighbours’, radio presenter Fifi Box has won a spot on the hit ELEVEN soap. Box will play Brooke Butler, an opportunistic, flighty and dubious woman who relies on her looks to get by. Brooke is also the wayward mother of Xanthe Canning, estranged girlfriend of Gary Canning and de-facto daughter-in-law of the Canning family matriarch, Sheila. It’s not quite known whether Box can actually act, but this is a clear sign of a show desperate for ratings and attention. She’ll hit screens in September.

Ê Popular Foxtel prison drama ‘Wentworth’ has been renewed for a fifth season. Production is set to begin in Melbourne next month, with the 12 new episodes set to air in 2017. Season four of ‘Wentworth’ wrapped up on SoHo on Tuesday night with a classic cliffhanger. Ê The cast of new Foxtel improvisation series ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Australia’ has been announced. The line-up will be spearheaded by ‘Flight of the Conchords’ star Rhys Darby. He’ll be joined by comedians Cal Wilson, Tegan Higginbotham, Susie Youssef, Steen Raskopoulos, and newcomers Bridie Connell and Tom Walker. Tommy Little will host the show for the Comedy Channel, which is based on the hit American format presented by Drew Carey. Ê

Season two of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ will return to FX on Monday, August 22 at 1.30pm (fast-tracked) and 8.30pm.

Ê Sky News isn’t quite known for its comedy but that’s all set to change with comedian Peter Berner launching a new

show last week titled ‘The B Team with Peter Berner’. ‘The B Team’ is a one-hour panel show that sifts through the news of the week, in a more light-hearted manner of course. It airs Saturdays at 9pm.

Ê Huge news for fans of ‘Making a Murderer’ with Netflix announcing new episodes are in the works. The next chapter will delve back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery and his co-defendant Brendan Dassey. The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and

Dassey’s legal team, as well as intimate access to the families and people close to the case. ‘Making a Murderer’ was a smash hit when released on the streaming service last year, so it’s a no-brainer that more episodes are on their way.

Ê Netflix has scored the international rights to ‘Star Trek’. Each episode of the new series will be available within 24 hours of its US premiere. Production begins in Toronto this September for a January 2017 premiere. It’ll be rebooted with a new ship, characters and missions.

Penrith Country Women’s Association (CWA) held their International Day meeting this week, with guest speaker Peter Sykes.

Mr Sykes is a photographer and author, who has just released his latest book Wolf Boy, set in Mongolia.

His second children’s book, Mr Sykes’ empathy with nature, interest in Indigenous people and love of the land find their way into his writing.

The book tells the story of Altan, a Mongolian boy, who finds a wolf cub abandoned in the snow.

He adopts it, amid his father’s fears that it will ‘be nothing but trouble’.

Mr Sykes has visited Mongolia 17 times, and told the CWA all about the book.

“The idea of this is to highlight the relationship between the Mongols, nature and animals,” he said.

In the Bible’s book of Matthew we read where Jesus was once talking to a group of people full of worry about the sort of things many people worry about today.

Jesus is talking about getting things in perspective, about getting our priorities sorted.

When we look to God, when we seek first God and His way of doing things, His way of thinking about life, we will get a right and true perspective about life. We will get a right and true perspective about what is really important in life.

Seizures in pets can be frightening for both you and your pet. A seizure is an uncontrolled electrical discharge from the brain that can cause twitches or shaking that can last from less than a minute to more than several minutes. Some pets may also have other symptoms during a seizure such as drooling or involuntary urinating. Some dogs will also be dazed or confused before or after a seizure.

What causes a seizure?

There are many different causes of seizures in pets.

(such as epilepsy) or originate from outside the brain; these include problems such as low blood sugar or liver problems.

Sometimes, even a toxin such as a toxic plant can cause a seizure. To try and determine the cause of the seizure, a thorough history and blood tests are generally required.

Some animals may go on to have more advanced tests like MRI scans.

It is very important to know

what to do if your pet has a seizure as this will prevent injury to both yourself and your pet. If your pet is near something that could hurt them, such as a piece of furniture, then move it away. It is also a good idea to place something soft under the dog such as a pillow or blanket.

It is essential that you stay away from your pets mouth and head as most animals that have seizures are unconscious and can accidentally bite. Always contact your veterinarian immediately and follow their advice.

Can seizures be treated?

As there are many causes for seizures, treatment depends on the underlying cause. Most young animals that have seizures have ‘epilepsy’. This can be treated successfully with a combination of anti-seizure medications. These medications do not cure the disease, but help your pet have a long and happy life with minimal seizures.

Maki refers to a nori (seaweed) wrapped sushi roll that contains rice and a range of different fillings including seafood, meat or vegetarian options such as avocado and cucumber.

Nigiri is thinly sliced fish or egg that is placed over a rectangle of pressed vinegared rice. The fish can be either cooked or raw.

In most sushi trains in Australia you’ll find nigiri topped with a range of ingredients including chicken katsu, avocado, crab stick, wagyu beef and tempura prawn.

Sushi is served with a selection of condiments, including soy sauce and wasabi: a green horseradish based paste that has a bit of a kick to it.

And then there’s Japanese mayo, the most popular of which is the Kewpie brand.

This is by far one of my favourite condiments.

Japanese mayo has an ‘umami’ taste; a Japanese word that refers to a pleasant savoury taste that doesn’t quite fit into the sweet, sour, salty or bitter categories.

While most people assume sushi is a healthy meal option it can be high in sugar and sodium, so it’s best to eat in moderation.

Try not to overdo it on the deep fried options, and keep in mind that maki and nigiri contain moderate amounts of white rice so try to break it up with sashimi or rice free sides like seaweed salad and edamame (cooked and salted soybeans).

You can also swap white rice for brown or black rice, which both offer a higher fibre content.

It’s also best to go easy on the condiments.

A major risk factor for plantar fasciitis is tightness within the calf muscles. stretching and strengthening program can be the easiest and most effective way to overcome most heel pain.

Poor footwear Unfortunately the footwear market is saturated with many different shoes often making it hard to buy the right pair. Incorrect footwear can lead to aching and burning heel pain. The most common mistake made with footwear selection is choosing footwear based on aesthetic reasons alone. Most shoes have some level of support; this can lead to overcorrection or under correction, forcing malalignment within your ankles, thus overstraining vital structures such as the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon.

Flat feet (malalignment) Sometimes a simple shoe selection just isn’t enough to take away all heel pain.

Biomechanics (the way you walk) plays a huge role in the stresses experienced by your feet. It is very common for pain to be exacerbated by flat feet or ankles that roll excessively towards the midline of your body. When this occurs it is so important that this be corrected as quickly as possible. Realignment via strength and conditioning along with orthotic prescription are key in the management of heel pain.

n a bid to raise awareness of future technology, Toyota has announced that it has secured three fuel cell vehicles to use exclusively in Australia for the next three years.

The fuel cell vehicles – known as the Mirai – will not only assist Toyota engineers to learn more about the future technology, but will also be used for promotional and key stakeholder engagement activities.

Even better, Toyota Australia also revealed that the vehicles will soon be joined by a portable refuelling station over the coming months.

The refueller will have the ability to be ground mounted or can be attached to a truck to make it mobile. This means the vehicles can be refuelled any time, anywhere, which will ensure the company is not limited in where it takes the Mirai vehicles.

Toyota Australia President, Dave Buttner, said he was thrilled to welcome the new technology back to the country.

“After having a taste of the technology last October, we are incredibly excited to have not one, but three of the fuel cell vehicles back in Australia,” he said.

“We are looking forward to educating a whole new audience on this future technology and generating more awareness of fuel cell vehicles.”

The portable refueller is expected to arrive in Australia later this year.

This year alone the 15-yearold McCarthy Catholic College student has been selected to represent Australia three times in… wait for it… three different sports!

It’s an incredible sporting accomplishment that would rarely have been achieved by anyone in the world, let alone in Australia.

In 2016, Madison represented the Australian OzTag team that toured New Zealand; she was selected to don the green and gold as a member of the Australian U17 Touch Football squad; and, to top it all off, the impressive Year 10 student has also made the shortlist of the Australian Youth Olympics Rugby Sevens squad.

These accolades coincide with multiple state honours in all three sports.

Madison said it never gets old hearing her name called out as a member of a national squad.

“I’m still not used to making these Aussie teams, it’s a great privilege and it means a lot to wear a jersey that represents your country,” she told the Weekender.

While Madison probably has more jerseys in her closest than dresses, she said her family is incredibly proud of all her achievements to date.

Interestingly, the talented teen has Kiwi roots which has made for quite the dilemma with some of her family.

“My grandparents are from New Zealand and they’d like to see me in a black jersey, but I want to stick with the green and gold because I’m Australian-born,” she said.

With so many sports to play, important things like school work can get a little tricky to juggle at times.

Madison said while her true passion is playing sport, her main focus is always on her studies.

“School work always comes first because you need a good education,” she said.

Madison admits her greatest achievement to date is making the Youth Olympics squad but her ultimate goal is to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Basketball Goldrick chases basketball dream in United States NATHAN TAYLOR

aniel Goldrick may only be 16-years-old but that hasn’t stopped him from following his dream of one day playing in the NBA in America.

The Claremont Meadows resident is chasing his dream so hard that last Friday afternoon he waved goodbye to his friends and teachers at St Dominic’s College as he prepares to relocate to Indiana, after securing a hugely sought after basketball scholarship.

Goldrick was selected to attend La Lumiere High School and continue his basketball development following an impressive performance at a recent AUSA Hoops camp in North Sydney.

Speaking with the Weekender, the 193cm power-forward recalls the moment his young life would change forever.

“Indiana came up to me after the AUSA camp and said I had improved tremendously over the past three years, and that they’d like me on their team,” Goldrick said “30 people attended the camp and only a few of us got selected for a scholarship.”

Goldrick has only been playing basketball for six years and always dreamed of

playing the popular sport in the United States at a College level, but his American dream has come a little earlier than expected thanks to plenty of hard work and dedication.

“Ever since I was little I’ve tried my hardest at everything I’ve done and reached my goals,” he said.

“Every day I come to the gym and hit the weights. After school I go to a court and shoot some hoops.

“It’s a dream come true two years early for me… I believe I’ll learn a lot while I’m over there.”

Basketball courts all over the United States have been flooded with Aussies in recent years largely thanks to players like Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills and now number one draft pick Ben Simmons making a name for themselves in the NBA. Goldrick said he’s inspired by Australia’s NBA community and hopes to one day follow in their footsteps.

“Those guys inspire me and it just proves how hard work pays off,” he said.

“Hopefully after high school I get a Division 1 College scholarship and then I make the NBA.” Goldrick will leave his family and friends behind next week when he departs for his new home abroad.

ulgoa Rise is already booming with houses but it’ll soon be full of thousands of local sporting stars after the NSW Government approved an application for a $200,000 grant to construct a storeroom facility on the estate’s multipurpose sporting fields.

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies along with Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown joined local sporting club and association members last Friday, to hand over the significant cheque to Penrith Council.

Ms Davies thanked Member for Penrith and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres for his work on securing the important grant.

“The grant provided by the NSW Office of Sport is greatly appreciated not only by myself but the Mulgoa community also,” Ms Davies said.

“The development and expansion of the sporting and recreational complex at Mulgoa Rise will be of great benefit to the Mulgoa electorate as it will provide another public sporting space for the community to use and enjoy.”

The $2.6 million sporting facility caters not only to the general and extended community but to local sporting clubs and associations also.

Ms Davies said the extra funding will help assist Penrith Council and the developers of Mulgoa Rise with completing the second stage of their construction of the multipurpose sporting and recreational facilities without any impediments.

“The development of the necessary storeroom facility to be built during the construction of the amenity building will allow local sporting clubs adequate space to store and protect their equipment,” she added.

Council expects work on the storeroom facility to be completed by November.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have kept their slim playoff hopes alive, defeating the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 82-66 in Round 19 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

Sean Weekes topscored for the Panthers with 17 points while Tom Lewer racked up 14 points late in the contest.

Penrith will play a double header this weekend beginning on Saturday afternoon against the Newcastle Hunters followed by a match against the Inner West Bulls on Sunday.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers endured a shocker of a game last Sunday, thrashed by the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 93-75 in Round 19 of the Division 1 Youth League Women’s competition.

Emily Potts led the Panthers this week with a whopping 27 points.

Penrith will play a double header this weekend beginning on Saturday afternoon against the Newcastle Hunters followed by a match against the Hornsby Spiders on Sunday.

There are still seven teams in contention for the playoffs, with the Panthers needing at least one win to guarantee themselves a playoff berth.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens Netball NSW Premier League team were hammered by North Shore United 62-44 last week.

team won a thriller against North Shore United 54-52.

Both teams will take on the Manly Warringah Sapphires in Round 13.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have now won 11 in a row, beating the Manly Warringah Giants 49-35 in the latest round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Phillip Aumann topscored for the Rams with three goals.

This Saturday afternoon the Rams will battle the North Shore Bombers at Greygums Oval.

AUSSIE RULES: After enjoying last weekend off, the Penrith Ramettes will return to action this Saturday against the Eastern Suburbs Stingrays during Round 14 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 1 competition.

The Ramettes were due to play a catch-up game last weekend but Campbelltown forfeited.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers picked-up one of the most important wins of the season when they defeated the in-form Fraser Park 6-3 at Blacktown Football Park last Saturday.

Hat-tricks to both Kyle Cimenti and Brenton Fox ensured that the Wanderers remained on top of the NPL2 ladder but the score line was not a true indication of what a tough match it really was.

This Sunday afternoon the Wanderers will take on the Central Coast Mariners at Pluim Park.

Pushing to the limit enrith athlete Nathan Pentecost is taking on the enormous challenge of pushing his wheelchair for 100km around the Sydney International Regatta Centre today and tomorrow – all for a good cause.

Pentecost, the captain of the Panthers Wheelchair Rugby League team, is raising money for the purchase of five wheelchairs to be used by participants in the sport.

He will complete the 100km challenge at the Regatta Centre on Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30, with a host of western Sydney business representatives also taking part in the push-a-thon.

“I am inspired by the work of Wheelchair Rugby League Australia and I want to support them by raising as much money as I can,” Pentecost said.

“The Men of League Penrith committee is also involved in this project and I want to raise awareness for that organisation too – Men of League do a tremendous job in the local community.”
