ccess to early intervention for disabled youth has arrived in Penrith, a year ahead of schedule.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), has opened the country’s very first shop front in Penrith, that will now offer information about the long-awaited National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Erin Kester has three children on the autism spectrum, and hopes this will bring her children valuable assistance sooner.

“I just hope that this is going to help set my kids up for the future so that they can give back to society when they are older, be able to get jobs and succeed,” she said.

“I have three children on the autism spectrum, but my daughter wasn’t diagnosed until she was 12, so she missed out on early intervention.”

Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott commended the NDIS program and said it will provide a massive boost to those with a disability.

“Children across the Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions will now be able to access the scheme and have individualised disability support plans in place for them from September,” she said.

NSW Minister for Disability Services, John Ajaka said the State Government has delivered on a State Election promise that an NDIA office would be in Penrith a year ahead of schedule.

“It gives around 2000 young people an opportunity to be able to receive their individualised funding packages 12 months early,” he said.

End of the road: Council chops PBA Penrith Business Alliance doomed to close after Council axes funding to key local organisation DALE DRINKWATER

he independent body that played a significant role in the planning of Penrith’s economic future has had its public funding axed.

The Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) has worked alongside Penrith City Council (PCC) for the last five years, and in that time has received around $3.5 million to support it.

After a review of the agreement between the PBA and PCC, Monday night’s Council meeting resolved to cease funding to the PBA. Mayor Ross Fowler acknowledged the role of the PBA, but said it was time to move away from planning Penrith’s economic future, into an action model.

“The review gave us the opportunity to look at the bigger picture and take a fresh look at whether there are better ways to drive economic development, boost jobs and attract investment into our city,” he said.

“Council has decided to investigate and consider alternative models for the future.”

Council has formed a Property Advisory Panel and has also considered utilising the

Penrith Progression model, which is now run ‘in-house’ by Council.

PBA Chairman Paul Brennan said he had not yet formally heard of the decision by Council, but said it’s obvious the decision has been made.

“There was a motion to cease funding, and it’s my understanding the motion has been moved, which is disappointing,” he said.

“The PBA has achieved an incredible amount for the region and has an incredibly capable Board.”

Mr Brennan said Penrith Progression was an initiative of the PBA until they had to hand it over to Council to manage.

Councillor Jim Aitken, who is on the PBA Board, said after the Penrith Progression came out of the PBA, there were “negative influences” between Council and PBA staff.

“Council tried to claim the Penrith Progression off the PBA, and decided they could do a better job in-house, which is yet to be seen,” he said.

“The PBA was a separate company that was given the freedom to take politics out of the decisions for the CBD, but politics has come back into it, and agendas have come back into it.

“I find it regretful it has come this way.”

TV networks only have themselves to blame in war on piracy and theft There’s two kinds of movie and TV viewers: Those who think it’s quite OK to pirate shows from overseas, and those who either don’t know how to do it or are so against it, that they aren’t the least bit interested.

Piracy will continue to become a bigger and bigger issue as faster Internet connections become the norm and more of us become comfortable with technology that allows people to effectively steal content from overseas.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks, the Federal Government is now more involved than ever in trying to stamp out piracy with new laws and legislation, but in truth, those who want certain content will always find a way to source it.

Personally, I’m not somebody who pirates movies or TV. But while fundamentally I’m against piracy, I can certainly understand why so many people do it.

Firstly, let’s separate the die hard, core piraters from the general person who simply wants better access to their favourite TV shows and movies.

Those diehard people are probably never going to change and certainly I can’t support them for even an instant – they feel they’re entitled to rip people off and they’re taking advantage of others.

But my view is that the vast majority of people who pirate TV and movies here in Australia are simply frustrated viewers with a passion for those shows and films.

Frustrated because the free-to-air television broadcasters got so far behind with what their viewers’ expectations were, that those viewers looked for other options.

Frustrated because those same free-to-air networks constantly change schedules, delay content and start shows so far behind the advertised times, that it simply encourages people to look for what has become an easier option.

Somehow, it became easier at some point to illegally download a television show than it did

Piracy will continue to become a bigger and bigger issue

to keep up to date with the schedules of Channel 7 or Channel 9. Surely it shouldn’t be that way.

Let me give you a couple of examples.

Last year, the hit comedy ‘How I Met Your Mother’ finished up after nine seasons.

The finale aired on March 31, 2014 in the United States and given the nature of the show and its “big reveal”, the final episode gained worldwide media attention including here in Australia.

Channel Seven, however, had tossed the show all over its schedule for some time and didn’t end up airing the finale until months after its US air date. By then, die hard fans of the show already knew how it ended.

You could get away with this in the days of ‘Friends’, to use an example of another hit comedy, because to be honest, local audiences here didn’t know any better.

Australian audiences didn’t know just how far behind the US we were. That has now changed.

Here’s another couple of examples.

‘Madam Secretary’ is being aired by Channel 10 in Australia right now, but the season finished in America on May 3.

‘CSI: Cyber’ finished its first season run on May 13 in the US, but is only a couple of episodes old here in Australia.

Channel 9 was still airing new episodes of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ last week even though the latest season finished in the US almost two months ago.

Pay TV providers here in Australia aren’t much better. Sure, they often get shows here quicker and they run to a better schedule but there’s only so many times you can watch the same episode of ‘Law and Order SVU’ before you start to question your monthly fees.

While the issue of piracy definitely needs to be addressed, the free-to-air broadcasters created a big chunk of the problem they’re currently facing.

They really only have themselves to blame.

omen in our police force will be celebrating a special milestone next week – 100 years of women in policing.

Next Thursday, police officers from Penrith Local Area Command, politicians, and the local community will be taking a celebratory walk from Weir Reserve to Tench Reserve in Penrith.

Celebrations began with a NSW Police baton relay launched on International Women’s Day on March 8, now making its way around the state.

Sergeant Sally Cox from Penrith Police Station said being a police officer is a great job that allows women to play an influential role.

“It’s a secure job and every day there is something different,” Sgt Cox said.

“It’s extremely important to have women in the police force, especially once they have some life experience which is when they can be really valuable and a real asset to the team.”

Over one third of Penrith police officers are women, representing the change that has happened over the last 100 years.

In 1915 there was just two female officers who were employed as ‘special constables’.

t’s probably the most bizarre press release issued by a Councillor all year.

Marcus Cornish is concerned that “half cut decisions” could be made by other Penrith City Councillors after consuming alcohol before meetings.

Cr Cornish said that before Council meetings, Councillors enjoy a dinner together where some treat themselves to two or three glasses of red wine.

“I only drink water now, but I used to have one when I first got there and I just about go to sleep... I thought it was ridiculous, it was stopping me from being alert,” he said.

“How can people function when they have two or three glasses of red wine?”

Cr Cornish said these “half-cut decisions” could affect around 200,000 people in the Penrith Local Government Area.

“I question some decisions that are being made. How can you make decisions for 200,000 people, and drinking alcohol prior to it?” he asked.

“Common sense has got to come into things, decisions should never be made that way.”

“We don’t let people drive a car under the influence of alcohol, but we let the people at the wheel of our Council do so,” Cr Cornish said.

“We need to bring Council in line with every other organisation in this country.”

Cr Cornish said while alcohol consumption is acceptable at receptions and other social occasions, the community expects decisions are made unaffected by alcohol.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler dismissed Cr Cornish’s comments, and said he does not think alcohol consumption has impacted on any decisions that Council has made.

“Absolutely not. People sit down and have a meal and a glass of wine, some have juice, some have soft drink, some have spirits, it doesn’t have any impact,” he said.

“For Cr Cornish to make a request like this is wasting the time of Council officers in doing something that is frivolous and irrelevant.

“Cr Cornish would be better advised to getting back to really representing the people of Penrith rather than just creating a headline for himself.”

Wallacia: Multiple charges after raid on property

Werrington: Teens arrested and charged over break-in

A member of the Rebels Outlaw Motorcycle Gang was arrested and charged last week after officers executed a search warrant at a home in Wallacia.

Charged with drug, weapon and ammunition offences, the operation was carried out by the Gangs Squad’s Strike Force Raptor.

Police located amounts of green vegetable matter that they allege to be cannabis, as well as methamphetamine, suspected steroids, ammunition for a shotgun, a revolver, handcuffs, and a prohibited knife all at the Wallacia premises.

The 34-year-old Rebels member was arrested at the home on Tuesday, June 23 and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with four counts of possess prohibited drug, two counts of possess prohibited weapon and possess ammunition without a permit.

Two teenage boys have been arrested after a safe was recovered following an alleged break-in at a home in Werrington last week.

The break-in is believed to have occurred between 11am and 2.15pm on Wednesday, June 24 at a home on John Oxley Avenue, Werrington.

Police from St Marys Local Area Command located a vehicle at about 2.30pm the same day that matched the description of one seen in the area at the time of the break-in.

Subsequently, the car was stopped in Coreen Avenue in Penrith and two teenage boys were then arrested.

The 15-year-old boy was charged with aggravated break, enter and steal, and breach of bail and the 16-year-old boy was charged with aggravated break, enter and steal.

Penrith: Woman sentenced after shoplifting incident

Jordan Springs: Residents asked to watch for problems

A woman was charged with shoplifting after she stole an item from a major department store in Penrith.

The 34-year-old from Werrington attempted the shoplift on June 24.

She was followed by store security when she placed both the bags she was carrying on the ground and continued to walk away.

Security took the bags and managed to find alcohol in her handbag, stolen from a nearby bottle shop. She was sentenced to a maximum of two years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 18 months.

Police are putting the call out for residents in Jordan Springs on The Northern Road to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

A number of incidents have been reported of people throwing rocks near homes and where people may be at the time, proving to be quite dangerous.

Incidents have also been reported from Russell Street in Emu Plains.

Police are also asking parents to keep an eye on their children during the school holidays as much as they can to ensure no one gets hurt.

Animals Local Orders Policy Penrith Council has prepared a draft keeping of Animals Local Orders Policy in response to enquiries and complaints about animals and the condition of premises.

Giving back to Nepean’s life savers Cardiac Support Group has multiple events planned during 2015 JADE ALIPRANDI

Missing: Jordan Morris A second appeal has been made for missing man Jordan Morris, who police believe was involved in a police pursuit in April.

He was last seen during the pursuit that put traffic to a standstill for over an hour on Friday, April 24.

The vehicle was directed to stop on Castlereagh Road in Penrith but allegedly failed to do so and the police pursuit began.

At the intersection of Coreen Avenue, the vehicle eventually came to a stop, and two men and a woman were arrested.

However, investigations have led police to believe a fourth person may have been involved, 22-year-old Jordan Morris.

He was reported missing to police on Tuesday, May 26.

A critical incident was declared following the investigations and reports that he was involved in the police pursuit.

The incident is no longer deemed critical but investigations are still continuing into his whereabouts, with his family deeply concerned for his welfare as he has not been seen since April.

he Nepean Blue Mountains Cardiac Support Group (NBMCSG) is celebrating Christmas early this year with its Christmas in July fundraising event just around the corner.

Tickets are selling fast, which is good news for the Cardiac Support Group, which aims to deliver new equipment to the Cardiac ward at Nepean Hospital whenever it’s needed.

The group has raised over $250,000 since starting out in 1996 and has high hopes for its newly designed Christmas in July fundraiser.

President of the group, Graham Collins, said he loves that he can give something back.

“It’s all about giving back and paying it forward – I owe my life to the hospital so this is my chance to help out,” he said.

“It’s amazing to be able to use the experience I’ve been through to help others in the same situation I was in.”

NBMCSG has several events planned for the remainder of the year including a Nepean River Cruise morning tea in September and their annual dinner in October.

With a total of eight on the committee and 150 members, the group is looking

Free Asbestos Collection Event Penrith Council together with other western Sydney councils, has been awarded funds from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to subsidise the removal of asbestos from residential properties under the Householders Asbestos Disposal Scheme.

Legacy asbestos sheeting is a big problem for western Sydney. When left to weather this unsealed sheeting becomes increasingly brittle and may begin to break down, releasing asbestos fibres.

Registrations are now being taken for a free asbestos collection event in Penrith City which will take place between 20-24 July.

Homeowners may be eligible for this free asbestos collection event if they have small amounts of legacy asbestos sheeting that has been stored or left to weather in the backyard for many years – a legacy of past renovations.

The amount that can be collected must also be less than 10m2.

Penrith City Council will organise for contractors to enter your property and remove the legacy asbestos free of charge. There is no need for you to move or wrap the asbestos sheeting as the contractors will do this for you, however you must be home at the time of collection.

To confirm your eligibility and register your interest in this collection event please call 4732 8084 Any homeowner who is planning on removing asbestos or conducting renovations may still be eligible for the rebate scheme. enrith resident, 15-year-old Elayna D’Ermilio, is celebrating her highest achievement thus far after being presented with the 2015 Rotary Youth Community Service Award.

Currently in Year 10 at McCarthy Catholic College, the school nominated Elayna for her award.

“I didn’t find out I had actually won until we arrived at the presentation,” Elayna said.

“After I realised my achievement, I just felt so honoured to have been considered let alone win.”

Involved in a multitude of projects, Elayna doesn’t mind keeping herself busy.

“My favourite is probably debating and public speaking because it is an ongoing activity and I just love doing it,” she said.

“I don’t mind being busy because it keeps me active and keeps me learning new things all the time.”

As a grand finalist of debating and public speaking, a Duke of Edinburgh program participant, a presenter for school ceremonies, a host of Open Days, an Ignite Leadership Program Leader and a presenter for school liturgies, Elayna has well and truly cemented her place within the school community.

Known as ‘Defqon.1 Volunteer Day’, fans from the festival get together annually to work in local environment areas that need attention.

Bush conservationist and co-organiser of the volunteer day, Lisa Harrold, said the work the team put in was huge.

“Today’s team effort is the equivalent of two years’ bush regeneration work by Landcare Mulgoa,” she said.

“Mulgoa Creek is a valuable habitat for native fauna, including wallaroos, wallabies and echidnas as well as the critically endangered swift parrot.”

The event was the first stage of a twoyear undertaking which is to include propagation of native seeds gathered by the volunteers and planting next year.

Elayna D’Ermilio “I just like helping people and getting involved,” she said.

Elayna has also been involved with the Salvation Army and is a UWS Fast Forward team member.

With a passion for writing and public speaking, Elayna hopes to study journalism at university.

Elayna says her secret for being able to achieve so much is being well organised with her schedule.

RID Squad targets illegal dumping Penrith Council to continue support for team that tackles serial tossers who flout the law DALE DRINKWATER

enrith City Council will continue to provide ongoing management to Western Sydney’s Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad to crack down on serial tossers.

Since 1999, the RID Squad has been investigating and identifying offenders who illegally dump waste in parks, national parks and on the side of the road.

Barry Ryan, RID Squad Coordinator said over the last 16 years they have successfully cleaned up large amounts of dumped waste and issued infringement notices to offenders.

“One man tipped three truck loads of waste at one location over two days and denied it until he was shown photos of him in the act,” he said.

“He was fined $12,000. That’s $4000 for each offence we caught him on.”

Last October penalties were increased by the State Government, to $1500 on-thespot fines for individuals and $5000 for corporations.

If the matter goes as far as court, penalties can reach as high as $250,000 for individuals and $1 million for corporations.

Mr Ryan said the RID Squad has fined people for illegally placing rubbish next to public bins, and in the last two months, they have caught between eight to 10 people dumping mulch.

“We’ve had a lot more focus on mulch dumpers where numbers have spiked because of the storms a few weeks ago,” he said.

Mr Ryan said often, illegal dumpers are from other Council areas and there’s generally three reasons why they do it.

“They cleaned out the house or moved and didn’t coordinate with the Council clean-up, they thought they could get away with it or they say that tips are too expensive,” he said.

The Western Sydney RID Squad is a strategic alliance with seven western Sydney Councils including Penrith.

Since 2002, Penrith Council has managed the project on behalf of all related members.

Councillor Kevin Crameri moved the recommendation that Penrith Council continue the management of the squad, and commended them on the work they do in the region.

The NSW Government’s Responsible Gambling Fund and the NSW Department of Education and Communities developed the resources following an $18,000 allocation from the Responsible Gambling Fund.

“My message to young people is that gambling is not a game – just because you might be good at gaming it doesn’t

promise to list new medicines as quickly as possible.

It complements $1.3 billion from the 2015/16 Budget for other melanoma medicines as well as drugs to treat breast cancer, blindness and shingles.

Treatment using pembrolizumab (Keytruda) currently costs patients with metastatic melanoma up to $156,130 per year without taxpayer subsidy through the PBS. Patients will now pay $6.10 if they are concessional patients or $37.70 for general patients.

Since coming to office, the Commonwealth has now approved 667 new and amended listings to the PBS, with a benefit of almost $3 billion to Australian patients.

enrith played host to NSW Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian last week at a special post-Budget breakfast.

Politicians and business leaders gathered at Pepper Stadium’s Chairman’s Lounge, to discuss the release of the 2015 State Budget and its impact on western Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the government had to make some tough decisions, but is pleased with how the Budget has been accepted in the community.

“Everyone’s heard about our record infrastructure spend but now we are also spending the highest the state has ever contributed to health, education and day to day services,” she said.

“We don’t mean to brag as a government, but five years ago you wouldn’t have seen any of this, so we are really proud of it.”

Ms Berejilkian outlined some key funding allocations for western Sydney that included roads, rail and local infrastructure such as the Penrith commuter car park. “$684 million is going to upgrade and repair key motorways including roads around Badgerys Creek, and also road upgrades to support employment growth

and all the services on the T1 Western Line will have a 60 per cent increase in capacity,” she said.

“You’ll be able to get on a train that is more frequent and there will be less crowding because the metro system will mean we can run more services.”

Ms Berejiklian acknowledged the election commitments made to particular western Sydney hospitals, such as Nepean Hospital, and said they will come to fruition in next year’s Budget.

The Budget Breakfast was hosted by the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Councillor Bernard Bratusa is no longer a member on the Penrith CBD Corporation Board, with Councillor Tricia Hitchen being appointed in his place. Cr Bratusa has represented Council on the Board since 2012, but resigned from the position on June 10 this year. Cr Bratusa advised the Board he was unable to attend the monthly meetings due to work commitments, but thanked Council for allowing him to represent them during that time. “I believe during my time on the Board I have added value to the growth, and I am disappointed I have to make this decision, but believe... it needs to have a Council representative that can attend all Board meetings,” he said. The next CBD Corporation Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14 at 6pm.

Council will create an easement over Council land, including part of the Emu Plains Station commuter car park for Transport for NSW to install aerial cables. The easement will be created to allow 66kv cables to run closer to the Victoria Bridge, and clear the old cables that are in the location of where the new Nepean River Green Bridge will be constructed. A report to Council said realignment of the cables will reduce the number of power poles along the Great Western Highway, and

improve the streetscape along shop fronts. The works are not expected to impact heavily on the car parking at the station, with only one space being lost. Council accepted an amount of $1 for compensation to create the easement over Council land.

Penrith City Council has accepted over $200,000 from the Federal Government to go towards Penrith City Council’s Children’s Services.

Discussions with the Department of Social Services over where the two year contract of funding will be allocated are still yet to be had, but it is confirmed it will not be going to the current Children’s Services Child Care Link program. The Child Care Link program, which has achieved many positive outcomes over its 10 year period, will cease and Council has thanked the staff and management involved in the program. Council’s Children’s Services will now work on strategies to use the $215,347 to support the community’s vulnerable.

Part of Horace Street, Cranebrook and part of Francis Street, Cambridge Park may be permanently closed, and consolidated with adjoining land owned by Council. Council has given the authority to pursue the permanent road closure.

Jobs for the west The whole of western Sydney needs to galvanise behind the University of Western Sydney and Professor Glover in the push for the proposed good job creation on the western edge of Sydney. This proposal is essential, if we, the nearly two million people of the region are to avoid major economic and social problems in the very near future. The narrative needs to be positive, there are many good indicators. The cost of not doing this, or something similar, exceeds the cost of the proposed investments. Every day over 500,000 people leave western Sydney to travel to jobs outside the area. Every year 40,000 new people join us, as their place of residence and our natural growth is about 30,000.

This all adds up to over 250,000 additional people in the next four years. Current job growth is very low in our region.

Unemployment is growing, particularly in our young people. Apprentices and TAFE trained people are seriously trending down as our academics are telling us. The matter is URGENT as Professor Glover and his colleagues at UWS have demonstrated with this solid achievable plan. The M9, the new airport and associated infrastructure are the key to the growth of new 21st century jobs. A new economy for this region is essential for the wellbeing of NSW and indeed for Australia. We all need to get behind Professor Glover, change the

Service Centre’s birthday The concept of the facility is good and easy to get around once it has been accessed (Service Centre declared a hit, Western Weekender June 26). However access to the building is a nightmare for older people and parents with young children. It is on top of a hill with a sloping climb. The car park is in need of some signage and there is only one entry/exit. I have used the building three times in the past year and two of those after I found the lift not working. Parking in the area is a disaster. York Road was a far better venue for accessibility. It was on flat ground and there was ample parking.

he Cure Brain Cancer Foundation was presented with a $45,000 cheque at a morning tea last week after the efforts from the Music For Life Ball.

With the ball held almost three weeks ago, the total amount raised will go to the research initiatives undertaken by The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

Organiser of the Music For Life Ball, Ann Willmington, said it’s a great feeling each and every year.

“It’s the best thing out to be able to help

an organisation like this,” she said.

“To hear we are helping someone and knowing the money will be put to good use is the reason we do it.”

Since the Music For Life Ball began over four years ago they have raised almost $290,000 for The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

Community Fundraising Coordinator for The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, Emma Taylor, said it’s just as great every year.

“It’s fantastic to receive the funds and we are all just over the moon,” she said.

“They’re a wonderful family and their support is just amazing.”

t’s one step further for iconic local training organisation JobQuest, which has now branched into providing a notfor-profit handyman service in Penrith.

Now a well known training identity in the real estate industry, JobQuest has been helping thousands of school leavers gain job skills for almost 30 years – but they haven’t stopped there.

Annette Carpenter, JobQuest’s Business Development Manager, said the new handyman service provides support for more of the community’s vulnerable – the elderly.

“It tends to be the over 55s that call us the most. They don’t generally like to risk falls and injury, and we found the majority are women who don’t want to risk their husband,” she said.

“We do lawns and grounds, and the gutters are a really big thing we get called out for.

“Inside the home we do things like change doors when they swell up and fix drawers if they’ve fallen off their runners, or doors off hinges.”

“It’s a new thing to Penrith,” Mrs Carpenter said.

“We’ve been doing it for other LGAs for about 10 years, but only in a minor way, it was only this year that we decided there was a shortage in the Penrith LGA.” As JobQuest is a not-for-profit organisation, Mrs Carpenter said the handyman services are extremely affordable, and gives extra assistance to disadvantaged people.

“Because we are not-for-profit, we really only want to cover our costs and we don’t gain anything,” she said.

“Even if we did make a profit it goes back to the community.”

Mrs Carpenter said in the past it has been neighbours who have made the call to JobQuest for the handyman service, who know someone doesn’t have the capacity to pay.

JobQuest’s handyman crew have clear police checks, working with children checks and safety white cards and provide services within a couple of days of the initial call.

Men need their own shed to keep doing great community work

atients in the Nepean Cancer Care Centre’s (NCCC) radiotherapy rooms can now relax under beach scenes and picturesque mountains.

On Monday, two treatment rooms were officially opened with LED back-lit photographs sprawling across their ceilings, to create a warm and welcoming feeling for patients.

Radiation Oncologist, Dr Viet Do, said patients’ experiences will be boosted now they no longer need to stare at a blank ceiling while receiving treatment.

“When you make the room warm, and comforting it makes a big difference,” he said.

“Studies show that it positively impacts on the patient’s attitude toward their cancer journey, so it’s a wonderful thing for all concerned.”

Dr Do said the cancer journey is already long enough to spend in cold and bland rooms, and is glad the LED photographs will get patients’ mind off the negatives.

The LED photographs were purchased through funds raised from last year’s Dry July campaign, where the NCCC’s team, the Nepean Cancer Carers, raised $125,000, Dawn Hutley, Senior Occupational Therapist at NCCC and Dry July organiser,

fter three years of sharing, the Men’s Shed in St Clair has come forward and asked for the community’s help to find their own premises.

The Men’s Shed’s 35 registered members currently meet at the St Clair Youth and Neighbourhood Team (SCYNT) facilities, that they share with other community organisations.

Community Development Worker, Terina Tarawa, coordinates the Men’s Shed on behalf of the SCYNT and said to continue and expand on the great work

they do throughout the community, they need their own shed space.

“The Men’s Shed is at a time and place where it is challenging to expand, and they are quite limited to what they can and can’t do,” she said.

“They need to have their own space, somewhere that’s open three to four days a week, somewhere they can do their projects at a bigger capacity.”

Ms Tarawa said the Men’s Shed is open to any suggestions from community members who are willing to help find a permanent home for the group.

randmother May Syaranamual’s family wanted to make her next birthday special, by publicly celebrating the five living generations of their family.

The maximum age between each generation of the Syaranamual family is just 25 years, ranging from 92-year-old May to the newest addition, six-monthold Jacob.

May moved to Cambridge Gardens 12 years ago to be closer to her son and his wife, Frank and Val Syaranamual, and she couldn’t have got much closer.

“Val and I have been living in the house next door since 1976,” 71-year-old Frank said.

“We moved there when there were

only three houses in Trinity Drive. It’s changed a lot since then.

“When we first moved here there was no one around, we had horses over the back fence, but now it’s very busy.”

Martriarch, May, added that they didn’t only just have horses, but lived close to kangaroos as well.

When they first moved here, Frank said all four of his kids would leave the house in the morning and wouldn’t be seen again until late at night.

“One day we went looking for them and they said they were going down to the Nepean River to play, we went down there and there they were jumping off the railway bridge into the water,” he said.

One of those mischievous kids, Doug Syaranamual is now 47-years-old and admitted to jumping off the rail bridge pylons.

“That’s what pretty much all the kids did back then,” he said.

“There were no computers or PC games so you used to have to get out there and find your own fun.”

Doug’s daughter, 24-year-old Kristy Syaranamual just had her first son Jacob six months ago, making five generations in the Syaranamual family.

“Five generations isn’t a common occurrence, it doesn’t happen a lot, and I thought it’d be nice for nan to have a photo, something to treasure for the future and show other families,” she said.

Kristy said despite how rare it is, this is the second time the family has seen five generations in the one room for a momentous photo.

“Our other nana lived until 101 – we don’t die in this family, we just get very old,” she laughed.

New approach to protecting yourself Internationally renowned self-defence experts bring their successful concept to Penrith JADE ALIPRANDI

elf-defence organisation SAFE International is bringing a whole new meaning to the traditional ‘tupperware party’ as they introduce their self-defence parties for women, with Western Sydney Krav Maga taking on the challenge.

Two of the world’s leading self-defence instructors, Chris Roberts and Richard Dimitri, of Canada, are in Australia to create SAFE International Sydney in the Penrith area.

Chief Instructor at Western Sydney Krav Maga, Jeff Phillips will manage the Sydney branch and said he can’t wait to work with the pair.

“To be able to work with people who have been in the field for a long time is a great opportunity for me,” he said.

“They’ll be going over all the training and procedures to ensure SAFE International Sydney will be just as good as the rest of them.”

Local brothers Owen and Martin Rogers donated the funds they had raised from the sales of the poppies with over 42,000 sold so far.

At a special presentation last week, the pair unveiled the amount they were donating to both the organisations.

“It was a very meaningful way to honour our soldiers and I think we owe the brothers a great deal of gratitude for what they’ve done for the area through the creation of Poppy Park,” he said.

“There was a fairy at my house this morning, not me, a pretend one... sitting next to me,” Lylah quipped.

Celebrating International Fairy Day was a joint initiative between Penrith City Council and private company Lend Lease, to demonstrate their ongoing support to the community.

Lend Lease’s NSW/ACT Communities and Business General Manager, Arthur Ilias said the day was a great example of the strong community ties between Jordan Springs residents and the wider Penrith region.

rom a record 200 applications, Penrith City Council has chosen its Junior Mayor and Deputy Junior Mayor for 2015.

Jesse Penza from Holy Family Primary School landed the role of Junior Mayor while Wilhein Dulay from Kingswood Public School is the new Junior Deputy Mayor.

Jesse said she felt really good after putting a lot of work into her application that asked her to describe what Penrith would be like in 200 years.

“I put in my submission about the airport that’s going to be coming soon to Penrith, and how that’s going to change how Penrith looks and works,” she said.

“All the roads will change, there will be heaps of buildings everywhere and it won’t be country anymore.”

Jesse added that she was most looking forward to learning about how Council and local government works.

Deputy Junior Mayor Wilhein said he also wrote about the Badgerys Creek Airport, but wants to gain a different experience to his Junior Mayor counterpart.

“I wrote about the new airplanes and airport, and I did the plans around that with buildings going up,” he said.

“I want to be confident and not nervous speaking in front of people.”

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said the selection process was very competitive, and commended all applicants on their effort and great work.

“Your applications and what you presented were very high quality and worthwhile,” he said.

The next Junior Council meeting will be held on Monday, July 13.

The concept is an annual event.

ou are probably aware of the famous quote: “Aim for the moon.

If you miss, you may hit a star”.

I completely agree with this.

There is no point aiming low because the best you can then expect is mediocrity. There is a caveat to this assertion though!

When dreaming big with your business ideas, your goals and aspirations have to also be grounded in reality.

That is, you need to ensure that what you are aiming for is actually achievable and that you have the resources to achieve it. Your brilliant invention might be something that you think is useful, but have you conducted research in the ‘real world’?

Have you asked a range of people (or the niche market to whom it relates) whether the product or service really will change their life?

On one of the last episodes of ‘Shark Tank’, one of the pitches was for a hotel in a regional area where guests could check themselves in.

It was aimed at business people, because as the owner of this business idea surmised, there is a lack of nice

accommodation in regional areas, plus business people get tired of the time spent checking in and out when they travel regularly.

There were a few potential flaws that the ‘sharks’ pointed out to him.

The first was that he had never run a hotel. The second was that the first hotel he proposed to build only had approximately eight rooms, so long queues were not going to be a factor.

The third was that his margins were quite low, although fairly standard for the industry.

Which meant that it would take a long time before he would see any profit and therefore no growth.

In summary: he really had not done his research well, even though it was a nice idea and seemed to be meeting a need.

So don’t stop dreaming!

But do make sure that you create a firm foundation for your dreams based on fact, not fantasy.

Remember this quote from Colin Powell: “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”

ome use the start of a new financial year as a fresh start, no matter how good or bad the previous one was.

The attitude we carry with us every day can make a big difference.

I am definitely not going to make predictions on what the new financial year will bring.

It’s both out of our control and if last year was anything to go by, it will again be unpredictable.

But you do have control over yourself.

Most people can lift that 15 to 20 per cent more every year as they become more experienced, gain access to better technology that improves processes and constantly improve their mindset.

Use that budget you made: You’ve probably made budgets before, but have you stuck to them?

Don’t look at your budget as a weight on you, but as a tool to help you get what you want.

Set it up so it’s easy to use. Don’t be afraid to tweak it as your circumstances change.

Make your own luck: Success is rarely about luck. Luck in my mind involves a lot of hard work, getting outside of your

comfort zone and making sure you are in the right place at the right time.

Holding yourself back waiting for the perfect timing isn’t always the best option.

Do your paperwork each week: The worst thing about tax time is dealing with the paperwork. So if your attitude throughout the year is “I’ll get to it later”, change it to making time often.

At the very least, set up a spreadsheet to record and add up your deductions, and buy some folders to store your receipts, or scan and store them electronically.

Regularly help others: Being happy throughout life is important. Helping others achieve satisfaction can be very rewarding to not only them, but you.

Exercise often: I truly believe fitness has a big role to play in achieving overall performance, even if your best work is done from behind a desk.

Ask for help: An advisor or trusted contact can help you with every area of your business, from new strategies to improving your team’s performance.

Getting on track could be as easy as making a phone call.

Turning back Time

Glenmore Park’s special history It is one of our area’s most populated suburbs, but as Nathan Taylor reports, Glenmore Park hasn’t always had the feel of suburbia that it offers today...

I

t may be hard to believe but 25 years ago the suburb of Glenmore Park was virtually empty – now it’s exploded to a population of more than 25,000 with new residences continuing to be built every day.

But how did Glenmore Park go from a dairy farm in the early 1900s to one of the most bustling and premier suburbs of western Sydney?

According to the book Penrith: The Makings of a City by Lorraine Stacker, Glenmore Park first came to light in the 1970s when the Housing Commission acquired land that would one day become a new estate.

Initially known as the South Penrith Release Area, it had been a dairy farm since 1914, when Eastwood butcher George Jessup purchased the old Regentville estate.

In 1933, Jessup sold a massive 650 acres to Thomas Stein, who continued dairy farming there for another 20 years before selling the farm to the State Government in the 1950s.

Little progress was made on the South Penrith Release Area until the 1980s as a

result of Penrith Council’s concerns that the character and nature of the proposed new suburb would be similar to Mt Druitt where there was a high proportion of public housing.

But by 1983, the number of new housing blocks available across the city dwindled and a housing crisis loomed.

Penrith Council supported a diverse mix of socio-economic groups for the South Penrith Release Area, a plan agreed upon by the end of 1986.

The estate was released as part of the State Government’s Sydney Regional Urban Release Program and was developed as a self-contained community, building its own sense of identity. It was planned to have many green spaces but no arterial roads.

The State Government acceded to Penrith Council’s argument that the Glenmore Park estate be the sacrificial lamb for the sake of retaining Orchard Hills as a rural area.

As part of the deal, Orchard Hills was removed from the Sydney Regional Urban Release Program, therefore preserving it for its agriculture and scenic values.

In August 1989, Penrith Council formally adopted the name Glenmore Park out of a number of suggestions including Peach Tree and Rodney’s Field, after the young mayor who suddenly quit and left the district in September 1988.

Glenmore Park ended up taking its name from the single storey cottage named ‘Glenmore’, built by Henry Cox and his wife in 1825.

The cottage and the sandstone stables are now part of the Glenmore Country Golf Club.

Glenmore Park was the largest single release area planned in the city and was a joint project of government and private sectors.

In May 1989, Glenmore Park Developments was by Elders Finance and the NSW Land and Housing Corporation. Elders Finance would provide a subsidised home loan package of 13.9 per cent – the lowest interest rates in Australia at that time.

Penrith Council approved the creation of 257 lots in the first stage of the estate, and in February 1990, Glenmore Park was officially opened by NSW Premier Nick Greiner.

When the land in Glenmore Park was released to the public for sale, there was an overwhelming demand for home sites.

The demand was so strong, that people pitched tents on home sites as they were desperate to secure their slice of the new suburb.

Glenmore Park occupies more than 800 hectares and is scenically attractive within its own natural boundary of the Mulgoa Nature Reserve on its south and the Blue Mountains as a backdrop to its west.

In 1995, Penrith Council received an award from the Institute of Municipal Management for its Glenmore Park Cultural Plan and, by 2001, the population of Glenmore Park had reached 16,000.

These days Glenmore Park is still under development especially in subdivisions like Bradley Heights and Mulgoa Rise. It’s also home to a number of schools, sporting clubs, businesses as well as a major shopping centre precinct which was built in 2001.

With new developments constantly popping up, there’s no telling what Glenmore Park will look like in another 25 years time.

T

he Penrith Panthers roared back into finals contention last weekend with an impressive 35-12 victory over the Wests Tigers, and return home this Friday night to play the Rabbitohs with their confidence sky high.

It has been well documented that the Panthers ravaged the Tigers’ left-side defence after Tim Simona was taken off the field injured, but Penrith’s big win was about more than that.

It was about Peter Wallace defying the critics and producing his best game of the season so far.

It was about Dean Whare showing the form we know he’s capable of to secure man of the match honours.

And yes, it was about David Simmons and those four tries.

Despite ex-Panther and Channel Nine

commentator Brad Fittler saying Penrith looked “sleepy” in the warm-up, the side looked anything but as they produced a performance that could very well start an important run of wins at a crucial part of the season.

The Panthers face the Rabbitohs this weekend and the Roosters the weekend after.

The fortnight ahead is not going to be easy, but the Panthers enter the gauntlet in the best possible head space after doing against the Tigers what they’ve struggled to do in the past few weeks – score points.

The Rabbitohs did enough to beat lowly Manly on Friday night but are far from the side that won the 2014 premiership.

There’s no doubt that they’re vulnerable heading into this game, particularly given superstar fullback Greg Inglis will be missing due to Origin duty. In some ways, it evens the playing field given the Panthers are also without their number one, with Matt Moylan still on the sideline.

Souths have been up and down all season, and their past three matches exemplify their yo-yo of a year.

Less than seven days later, the Tigers totally outplayed them to win 34-6, while last weekend they were good without being great against Manly, winning 20-8.

While David Simmons has earned most of the praise following last weekend’s win over the Tigers, it was his opposite winger, Josh Mansour, who made a huge difference to Penrith’s fortunes.

His defence was rock solid and aggres-

sive, while his fantastic try in the corner of Leichhardt Oval probably wouldn’t have been scored by Waqa Blake, who despite his best efforts has struggled in similar situations while filling in for ‘Sauce’.

Mansour ran for 187 metres (the most by any Panther on Sunday), made 12 tackles, produced a line break and scored that freakish try in a stellar display.

The short turnaround is an obvious issue for the Panthers but when you win like they did on Sunday, there’s every reason to believe that playing again just five days later is not such a bad thing.

Jamie Soward came out of Sunday’s match with a corked leg and seemed to be struggling at the club’s recovery session on Monday, but should be right to play.

Ivan Cleary has named an unchanged team for the match.

Penrith go into the game as outsiders, but with Inglis out, Mansour in and the Panthers back in the winners’ circle, there’s every reason to be confident of back to back victories.

The record number of tries for Penrith in one game remains at five, with Peter Langmack holding that honour from a match against St George back in 1974.

Simmons joins a host of players who have scored four tries in one match including Luke Rooney, Amos Roberts, Craig Gower, Peter Jorgensen, Gary Freeman and Glenn West.

mance last Sunday has again prompted people to ask about his future. For the record, Simmons is off contract and is yet to decide if he wants to go around again.

t may have taken a few weeks but Panthers fullback Dallin WateneZelezniak said he’s finally starting to feel more comfortable in the number ‘1’ jersey.

The 19-year-old, who took over the fullback role from injured star Matt Moylan early last month, said he’s still a long way off from filling Moylan’s shoes but is getting there with every game.

“I’m still warming up, I’ve still got so much work to do and so much to learn. I’m learning every training session and every game,” Watene-Zelezniak told Extra Time.

“I don’t think Moyza’s shoes can be filled but I’m certainly giving it my all.”

Since switching from wing to fullback in Round 13, Watene-Zelezniak enjoyed his best game last Sunday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval – bagging himself a try and setting up another.

The Kiwi sensation helped set up Penrith’s first victory in more than a month and said the 35-12 win over the Wests Tigers would instil a lot of confidence into the side.

Meanwhile, Watene-Zelezniak admits he’s thrilled to have his older brother Malakai back at the club.

After starring in Penrith’s Holden Cup team a number of years ago, the older Watene-Zelezniak took time away from rugby league to pursue interests in rugby.

Recently, Watene-Zelezniak returned to the Panthers on a lower tier deal which saw him play for Penrith’s NSW Cup team last weekend.

“It’s awesome… there’s nothing better than having your brother back at the club,” Watene-Zelezniak said.

DAVID SIMMONS IS ALL CLASS avid Simmons passed 100 tries on the weekend, what a massive achievement! Only 65 players in history since 1908 have reached the 100 mark, which makes it even more impressive.

Simmo is one of those players I hold on a pedestal, if anyone has had the opportunity to speak to him you will know you are greater for the experience.

He is truly a role model and mentor for young footy players and young men in general with the way he approaches life on and off the field. There wouldn’t be many days I don’t see him doing extra video or skills work with one of our rookies. Over his 13 year career he has built up a wealth of knowledge and experience.

No disrespect to other wingers but he is the smartest I’ve played with or against.

It hasn’t been all beer and skittles for Dave, he’s had his share of injuries and time in reserve grade but that resilient attitude is what has made him the player he is. Back in 2010 he joined the Panthers from the Sharks and spent the whole season in reserve grade except for one game. In that game he received man of the match honours against the premier-

enrith Panthers winger Josh Mansour says he’s thrilled to be back on the field and hopes his days on the sideline are well and truly over.

The 25-year-old Australian international returned to Penrith’s line-up last Sunday following 10 weeks on the sideline with a knee injury.

Speaking with Extra Time before last Sunday’s match against the Tigers, Mansour said he was relieved to finally be back after an agonising couple of months.

“It’s been a roller coaster to be honest, it was frustrating sitting there watching the boys on the sideline but I’m happy to be back,” he said.

Mansour’s return against the Tigers last week was only his sixth game all year after he spent the opening weeks of the season recovering from off-season ankle and shoulder surgery.

Mansour injured his knee during Penrith’s loss to the Titans in Round 7 and was named to return for the Panthers a number of weeks ago but had to withdraw after a setback at training.

“Initially I was meant to be sitting out for 10-12 weeks and we tried getting back earlier but unfortunately that wasn’t the case,” he said.

“I just had to stay as positive as I could because the moment you drop your head it’s going to be a long season.

“We have a great rehab team and they got me back on deck as fast as possible.”

During Mansour’s lengthy stint on the sidelines, Penrith’s form also dwindled, winning just two of six games. Mansour said it was difficult to watch his teammates struggle on the field and hoped his return would inspire a resurgence for the remainder of the season.

“It’s always tough to watch the boys after a loss but there is still a long way to go, we’re sitting in the middle of the pack and hopefully with a few more wins we’ll be back up there,” he said.

Mansour also hopes to return to his try scoring and ‘metre eating’ best very soon too.

“My greatest strength is getting the boys yardage, being that extra forward,” he said.

“At the end of the day I’m there to do a job and hopefully get a few tries too.”

Mansour scored a try in his return last Sunday and ran a team-high 187 metres.

PENRITH GIVE UP 18-6 LEAD TO LOSE 19-18 IN A THRILLER AGAINST WYONG ROOS

The Penrith Panthers Holden Cup team have proved they are human after all, losing their first game in nearly three months last Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers headed into the clash at Leichhardt Oval aiming for their 10th straight win but the Wests Tigers had other ideas, defeating Penrith 10-6 in the second lowest scoring Holden Cup game in history.

The game didn’t reach any heights, especially in the first half, with both teams struggling to complete their sets and convert attacking opportunities.

The Tigers were the sole try scorers in the opening 40 when centre Marion Seve crossed from close range after 20 minutes.

With the Tigers up 6-0 at the break, many fans thought they’d see a different Penrith side when the teams headed out for the second half… they were wrong.

Penrith continued their poor form in the second stanza with more dropped ball and incomplete sets.

The Tigers, while not brilliant, were nowhere near as bad as the Panthers and made the visitors pay in the 52nd minute with another easy try to go up 10-0.

Wyong has defeated the defending premiers in dramatic fashion 19-18 in a game where Penrith were in the driver’s seat leading 18-6 with 15 minutes to go but failed to put the game beyond the reach of the Roos.

It was a disappointing finish to the game for Penrith, who conceded numerous penalties and made crucial errors when in possession that allowed Wyong to ultimately steal the game with a last minute field goal.

Goal kicking was also an issue for the Panthers who, despite having scored four tries, only kicked just the one goal.

The loss reduces Penrith’s lead at the top of the NSW Cup to two points as they head into this week’s bye.

Penrith were forced into some changes with Robert Jennings omitted from the side altogether, replaced by Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, the older brother of Panthers NRL fullback, Dallin, while Rodney Coates (shoulder) was ruled out, replaced by Reece Goldsmith.

Wyong led 6-0 after eight minutes of play when Tyler Cornish provided a nice short ball for Lagi Setu to explode through the defensive line from 25 metres out to score.

Against the run of play, Penrith levelled

The Panthers in action last week posted first points through prop Paea Pua, who bumped off a couple of Tigers defenders to crash over and score.

Debutant Nathan Cleary, son of first grade coach Ivan Cleary, slotted over the extras to inch Penrith closer 10-6.

However, that’s where the scoring ended for both sides with the Panthers unable to find any rhythm for the rest of the match.

Despite the four point loss, the Panthers (26 points) still remain one point clear of the North Queensland Cowboys and Brisbane Broncos (25 points) atop of the Holden Cup competition.

This Friday afternoon the first-placed Panthers will look to bounce back when they go up against the 13th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Pepper Stadium.

Wyong sprung into life through tries to Eloni Vunakece and Nathan Smith to trail by two before referee Liam Nicholls gifted Wyong a game-levelling penalty 10 metres out and in front after Penrith were deemed to be accidently offside.

A line-break by Eddie Aiono and subsequent penalty gave Penrith great field position to set-up for the match-winning field goal. But Wyong’s Abraham Papalii had other ideas as he not only charged down a poorly executed early tackle field goal attempt from Adrian Davis but regathered to take the Roos deep into Penrith’s territory.

Wyong showed composure to wind down the clock before Cornish calmly nailed the match-winning field goal.

or iconic singer/songwriter James Reyne it seems there’s no place he’d rather be than on the road doing what he loves.

After the success of his 2014 ‘Plays Australian Crawl’ tour, that saw James perform for more than 100,000 fans, he is back on the road in August and September to play all his hits on the ‘Solo, Crawl & More’ tour.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said of the tour.

“There’s a lot of good songs there. I think people will enjoy it because it’ll be 90 minutes of just hits.

“All killer, no filler, as we say.”

The tour will feature tracks from James’ extensive back catalogue including Aussie classics like ‘Boys Light Up’, ‘Reckless’, ‘Fall of Rome’ and ‘One More River’.

His music has become part of the fabric of the Aussie music landscape but James says at the end of the day he’s just happy being able to do what he loves.

“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years now and I’m just grateful that I can still get out there and do it and people are still

interested to come and see it,” he said.

“I get to do [as my job] the thing that I’d probably be doing anyway if I wasn’t doing it as a job.

With initial tour dates selling fast, James has added an extra show to the tour which will see him take to the Evan Theatre stage at Penrith Panthers on Friday, August 21. The plan is simply to get his music out to as many people as possible.

“That’s where most people live so you might as well go to where people live,” he laughed.

“Panthers and places like that are just great places to play.

“They’ve always got really good auditoriums, they’re set up well to do this sort of thing.”

Along with the tour James will be releasing his new six track self titled EP ‘James Reyne and the Magnificent Few’ on iTunes today which features new material from James and band mates Brett Kingman, John Watson, Phil Ceberano and Andy McIvor.

The EP was recorded in Melbourne at Woodstock Studios and the majority of the tracks were written over the last 12 months, though for James songwriting is a constant process.

“I’m always writing songs,” he said.

“You’re like a magpie I think if you’re a songwriter. You just pick up little bits and pieces all over the place and you just store them away or write them down.

“My synapses are always open to things that might be good ideas for songs.”

The new EP includes the strikingly titled lead single ‘What A Pain in the Arse It Is (To Run Into You Again)’ which was released nationally on Monday, June 15.

“It’s been great,” James said of the feedback for the track.

“People who hear it love it. They’ve been really nice and said nice things.”

Along with the ‘Solo, Crawl & More’ tour, James and the Magnificent Few will be doing two one-off live shows at the Newtown Social Club in NSW and Northcote Social Club in Victoria this July.

As well as the six tracks, which include ‘I’d Still Be In Love With You’ featuring Aussie singer/songwriter and guitarist Mia Dyson, the ‘James Reyne and the Magnificent Few’ EP also showcases a bold cover image of a muscle bound surfer with the head of a bull that James discovered while looking through a book of surf art.

“I like the image because it sort of suits how we think we are in the band,” he said.

“We may not be that but in our tender years we think ‘yeah we’re still there, we’re still happening’,” he laughed “It’s sort of an image that suits the music and the people and the personalities involved.”

It’s these little touches that are important to James in an era where digital music is slowly replacing the tangible aspects of CDs and records.

“I’m old school. I like having good cover art, I like the process,” he said.

James Reyne will be performing his ‘All The Hits’ show at Evan Theatre on Friday, August 21 at 8pm. Tickets are $58.60.

he story of 70s music legend Cat Stevens will be brought to life on the Evan Theatre stage this month when Darren Coggan returns for a national encore performance of ‘Peace Train – A Tribute to Cat Stevens’.

‘Peace Train’ combines music and story telling to recreate the life of one of music’s most iconic singer-songwriters.

Cat Stevens gave the world some of the most beautifully heartfelt and classically timeless songs of all time including ‘Where Do The Children Play’, ‘Wild Word’, ‘Moonshadow’, ‘Peace Train’, ‘Father & Son’ and ‘Morning Has Broken’.

rom July 13-18 is Winter Fire Safety Week, and to help promote this important cause NSW Fire & Rescue, in partnership with RSL and Service Clubs are running an initiative Keep Looking While Cooking to promote and educate the community on Fire Safety and what to do in an emergency, specifically in a kitchen fire in the home.

The purpose of Fire & Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) winter home fire safety campaign is to address the seasonal spike in home fires over winter, with an aim of reducing incidents and injuries, by increasing concern and awareness in targeted audiences. An analysis of FRNSW incident data indicates the number of accidental home fires trends higher in the months of May to August. Kitchen (cooking) fires have consistently comprised approximately half of all accidental residential structure fires with the majority of the accidental fires being “unattended”.

On Tuesday 7th July, NSW Fire & Rescue will be holding a simulation of a kitchen fire in the Penrith RSL Club car park. This is intended to demonstrate what should be done in this situation and how to be safe. This will take place at 10.00am and is free to attend.

On Tuesday 14th July, a local fireman will attend Penrith RSL Club to give a talk on fire safety and to raise awareness on the dangers in the home that are often overlooked. This will take place between 12pm – 12.30pm and is free to attend.

BEER Darling Pale Ale

Tooheys // TROY DODDS As a journalist you often have to ‘take one for the team’ and make sacrifices, and that’s exactly what I did by putting my hand up to review a beer for this week’s edition.

Hard work indeed.

Named after the first Tooheys ‘Darling Brewery’, which was located in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, the easy-to-drink Tooheys Darling Pale Ale has been crafted with a non-challenging flavour to make it accessible to new pale ale drinkers.

I’m not usually a fan of pale ale beers, but the Darling Pale Ale is far from confronting – and sits nicely as an alternative to your traditional varieties without straying too much into the craft beer dark side (I know, I’m not trendy, but I’m yet to find a craft beer that really does it for me).

Golden amber in appearance, Tooheys Darling Pale Ale delivers a fruity hop aroma and mild bitterness brought on by a unique blend of Australian and American hops.

Malted barley and wheat combine to provide balance and a delicate malt backbone.

It’s unlikely you’ll sit down and want to drink half a dozen of them in one sitting, but a Darling Pale Ale is the perfect beer to sit with for an hour or so while watching footy, cooking a BBQ or relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.

It has a laid back feel about it, and while it’ll probably never be my drink of choice for a long session with mates, I’ll be certain to keep a couple in the fridge for the right moment and occasion.

The bottle is great and has a real traditional feel about it.

If you’re a beer lover, it’s certainly worth trying – it’ll probably deliver a pleasant surprise, whether you’re a pale ale devotee or a bit more of a traditionalist.

Christine Toomey // KATE REID The Saffron Road is a fascinating novel that follows the lives of women who have taken the path to becoming a Buddhist nun.

Author and award-winning journalist Christine Toomey travelled around the world speaking to women about their experiences with Buddhism, while also looking at the route it has taken from East to West.

This is a captivating novel that explores one of the fastest growing religions in the West. A must read for anyone interested in learning more about this high profile, yet often misunderstood religion.

‘The Good Lie’ follows the story of four young children who are orphaned during the brutal civil war in Sudan.

After witnessing the death of their family the siblings Mamere (Arnold Oceng), Theo (Femi Oguns) and Abital (Kuoth Wiel) journey across Africa to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Along the way they meet two other young orphans, Jeremiah (Ger Duany) and Paul

(Emmanuel Jal), but the group is torn apart when Theo is taken by the militia.

After surviving the journey, the group spend 13 years in the refugee camp before being resettled in America. Upon arrival in the US they meet Carrie Davis (Reese Witherspoon), who has the task of finding employment for the group.

What follows is a fascinating story of courage as they struggle to adapt to

life in America while dealing with the trauma of what they have witnessed.

This is a really beautiful film that delves into a subject that we often hear about in the media but don’t truly understand.

Emotional yet ultimately uplifting, ‘The Good Lie’ is a feel good film about the resilience of the human spirit.

Budget lowdown at breakfast On Friday, June 26 a post-Budget breakfast was held at Pepper Stadium’s Chairman’s Lounge with special guest NSW Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian.

Politicians and business leaders met to discuss the 2015 State Budget including key funding allocations for western Sydney.

The event was hosted by the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce and guests in attendance included Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler, Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce President Gina Field and NSW Business Chamber CEO Stephen Cartwright.

The hundreds of people in attendance got a terrific insight into the State Budget from the Treasurer herself, just days after she delivered it in Parliament.

The breakfast is a regular event.

Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ tells the story of a super-secret spy organisation that takes on a street kid as the newest recruit in their competitive training program.

Agent Harry Hart recognises the potential in the wayward teen, Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, and takes him under his wing.

Meanwhile, the villain Richmond Valentine is on a mission to solve climate change with an evil plan to rid the world of much of its population.

The film has been a hit with audiences and critics alike. It stars a host of big names including Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine, along with newcomer Taron Egerton, and was directed by Vaughn who also worked on ‘Kick-Ass’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’.

Empire wrote: “Perhaps the riskiest mainstream movie in years, Vaughn’s love letter to spy movies may be uneven in places, but it’s ultra-violent, envelope-pushing, and fun enough to overcome the flaws. Bond with the stabilisers taken off”.

The movie has a fantastic ending, is action packed from start to finish and you’ll also find a few laughs along the way, too.

Most people have probably heard of the term ‘superfood’. Though the word conjures up images of cape clad broccoli here to save us from disease the reality is that a superfood is just a nutrient dense food, i.e the foods that we used to refer to simply as ‘healthy foods’.

Unfortunately there are a few issues with focusing too much on these so called ‘superfoods’.

of a healthy diet. Yes, we want to consume foods that provide us with the nutrients we need to maintain good health and wellbeing, but the best way to do that is to focus on eating a variety of nutrient dense foods, not just focusing on one.

The other issue with superfoods is that the term has been hijacked by health food companies to sell people expensive products that they

don’t need. For example, if you’re eating plenty of green leafy vegetables then it’s really not necessary to consume green powder.

So instead of getting caught up in the latest superfood fad here’s some tips to get the most bang for your nutritional buck.

Firstly, start thinking of your diet as a whole rather than focusing too much on one food. Variety is key, so try to include a range of vegetables, fruits, wholegrain breads and cereals, lean meats or vegetarian equivalent and dairy.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables aim to have a variety of colours on your plate. Eating fruits and vegetables from each of the different colour groups (red, orange/yellow, purple/blue, green and brown/white) means that you’ll be consuming a range of disease fighting chemicals known as phytochemicals.

Lastly, approach the health food aisle with caution and always check labels. There are some ‘health’ foods that are over processed, energy dense and expensive. If you’re a little unsure the safest bet is to head to the fresh produce and cold storage sections where you’ll find all the ingredients you need for a super diet.

week after bagging a pair of silver medals, Leonay’s Jessica Fox added some colour to her recent haul with a gold medal winning performance in Krakow, Poland.

Fox finished atop the dais in the women’s C1 World Cup final last weekend with a sensational sub-100 raw time of 97.19.

Speaking after the race, Fox said she was pleased with her performance on what she described as a “challenging course”.

“On my first session I did not feel good on here but it got better throughout the week and I guess when the gates are placed for the race, everyone is in the same position and you have just got to go for it,” she said.

Meanwhile, Fox’s younger sister Noemie made her World Cup debut in the same event, finishing a respectable sixth in the final.

Interestingly, the 18-year-old outshone her more fancied sibling in the semi-final, recording the second fastest run.

While things went according to plan for the Olympic silver medallist in the C1 portion of the event, things weren’t so straightforward in the women’s K1 with Fox failing to even make the final in a surprising development.

Fox produced a raw time of 93.80 in the semi-final but two gate touches and a missed gate resulted in 54 seconds in penalties, relegating the world champion to 29th place.

Fox said she didn’t feel “physically right” heading into the event.

“I didn’t have the best lead-in with missed training due to a neck niggle and I felt flat today but thought I could push through it. But once I got off line I couldn’t get back on track,” she said.

“I put a lot into my C1 final yesterday and I guess it caught up with me.”

Fox and her Australian teammates will now switch their attention to the third ICF slalom World Cup, which begins today, Friday, July 3, in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia.

cCarthy Catholic College and rugby league success have been synonymous since the days Brad Fittler, Andrew Ryan and Craig Gower roamed the school grounds. Now the Emu Plains based school is on the verge of unleashing the game’s next wave of talent for the world to see.

Recently, McCarthy entered two teams into the prestigious Panther Trophy competition in the U13 and U15 age groups.

While their U15’s team was brave throughout the tournament finishing third in their pool, their U13’s team had an outstanding day, winning all of their pool games over Chifley College, Colyton High School and Erskine Park.

After winning two finals matches, they battled powerhouse school St Dominic’s in the all-important decider and won 12-0.

Meanwhile, McCarthy also recently competed in the Interschool PDSSSC representative season, winning both the Junior Boys (Year 7 and 8) and Intermediate Boys (Year 9 and 10) Grand Finals, a tremendous result for the school.

ustralian Formula One legend Mark Webber will make a pit stop in Penrith next weekend for the launch of his new autobiography Aussie Grit.

The 38-year-old will visit Dymocks in Westfield Penrith at 11.30am on Saturday, July 11 to meet and greet local fans in celebration of his new book.

Aussie Grit tells the incredible story of how Webber started as a pizza delivery boy in the small NSW town of Queanbeyan and climbed the F1 ladder to secure 42 podium finishes and triumph in nine races, including twice winning the crown jewel of F1, the Monaco Grand Prix.

In his book, Webber provides a recount of the personal struggles that form his Aussie grit character and reveals for the first time what really went down at Red Bull and the truth behind his rivalry with teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Webber’s appearance in Penrith next Saturday will be his only one in Sydney, with fans encouraged to get down to Dymocks early to meet their Aussie racing idol.

enrith Emus President Jim Hook has declared the future is bright at the embattled club despite experiencing one of the worst defeats in sporting history last weekend.

Playing against competition heavyweights Eastwood, the struggling rugby club were smashed 454-0 across four grades, with their Shute Shield side enduring their worst loss in recent memory, going down 129-0.

The news was just as bad for Penrith in the other grades with second grade trounced 125-0, third grade walloped 136-0 and fourth grade losing 64-0.

Mr Hook said last Saturday’s debacle at T.G Millner Field was difficult to comprehend.

“We fell to bits last weekend for a whole host of reasons. We have lots of injuries and we were playing a very professionally run, high performance football club from first grade through to fourth grade,” he said.

The Emus, who are yet to win a game in first grade this season, have been considered the joke of the league for some time and are in desperate need for help right across the board.

Mr Hook revealed he’s been in negotiations with NSW Rugby for quite some time for assistance, with things progressing slower than he would’ve liked.

“We’re not as financially resourced as some of the other clubs and I’ve been in negotiations with the powers that be for assistance on and off the field for a while,” he said.

“We’re working hard with NSW Rugby and with our coaching staff to make sure we fine tune our football operations so we become more competitive on the field.”

Speaking with the Weekender, Executive Director Bruce Worboys confirmed NSW Rugby were in constant talks with clubs across western Sydney to improve the state of the sport in the area.

“In February this year NSWRU appointed senior manager Mike Doyle to review the rugby structures in western Sydney and he’s been meeting with stakeholders in the region, which of course includes Penrith,” he said.

“A report is being finalised for NSWRU to present a proposal to the Australian Rugby Union, which will promote rugby to regain status in western Sydney.”

Mr Worboys also acknowledged Penrith’s current dire situation and hoped the club’s strong junior base would lay a platform for a positive future.

“Through a lot of hard work by rugby volunteers we have seen Penrith District Juniors enjoy success the last two years with their U17’s recently crowned state champions,” he said.

“A number of these players are graduating through to Colts and these teams are starting to perform consistently. We will be looking for these teams to progress through to grade in due course.

“Unfortunately in recent times Penrith has not been able to maintain a core playing group that can stabilise a club through the grades and that is being addressed by the review and through the Sydney Rugby Union.”

The Weekender understands a salary cap of $200,000 per club will be implemented next season to put a halt to up and coming talent leaving struggling clubs.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side are back to their losing ways, thrashed by the competitionleading Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 89-60 last weekend. Louis Brandt was Penrith’s best player with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Penrith Panthers remain in 10th position and will be up against the last-placed Maitland Mustangs this Sunday afternoon at Penrith Sports Stadium.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers women’s Waratah Championship League side have continued their late season slide, going down to the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 90-64 last weekend.

Alicia Poto was once again Penrith’s best performer with 17 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Penrith’s women have slipped to sixth position and have a bye this weekend.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have lost their first game in three weeks, upset by the North Shore Bombers 64-45 in the latest round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Daniel McDonald was Penrith’s standout performer scoring an impressive five goals in the 19 point loss. The Rams remain in fifth position and will battle the seventhplaced Western Suburbs Magpies this Sunday afternoon at Picken Oval.

AFL: The Penrith Ramettes women’s team enjoyed a bye last weekend and will return to action this Saturday morning.

The fourth-placed Ramettes will take on the fifth-placed Gosford Wildcats at Greygums Oval in Penrith from 11am.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms have defeated the Sydney Bears 2-1 in the latest round of the Division 1 NSW Ice Hockey competition.

“Special mention has to go to Phantoms Division 3 goalie Scott Cosgrove for stepping up last Sunday and playing an absolute blinder,” Phantoms captain, George Kozumplik said.

The last-placed Phantoms will battle the third-placed Liverpool Saints this Sunday in Liverpool.

NETBALL: Penrith District Netball Association fielded four teams at the 2015 Netball NSW State Age Championships last weekend, which was contested across four venues including Jamison Park.

Along with hosting the Division 3 competition, Penrith’s U14 side finished in third place, three points behind runners-up Liverpool City, while their U13 side finished in eighth place.

Penrith’s U12 and U15 teams finished 11th and 12th, respectively, against some of the best netballers from around the state.

fter a season most players and fans would rather forget, the Western Sydney Wanderers will look to get their 2015/16 campaign off to the best start possible when they battle old foes Brisbane in the opening round of the new ALeague competition this October.

The Wanderers will go head to head with the Roar in the competition’s season opener at Pirtek Stadium on Thursday, October 8 before embarking on their first road trip of the season the following week when they travel to Adelaide to take on the Reds.

As usual fans won’t have to wait long before the first Sydney Derby of the season, which this year will take place on Saturday, October 24 at Allianz Stadium.

The Wanderers and Sydney FC will do battle on three occasions with the other two matches to be played on January 16 and February 20.

Another hotly anticipated match for fans next season will be the first meeting between the Wanderers and this year’s A-League champions Melbourne Victory on December 12.
