A

sea of red swept across western Sydney last weekend with Labor reclaiming much of its heartland in a cliffhanger election battle.

Lindsay dramatically fell back to Labor, with Emma Husar claiming victory in the seat late on Saturday night after an exceptionally tight count.

The mood was buoyant at Ms Husar’s post-election party at the Penrith Cricket Club, with even some of the Labor faithful surprised at the result.

“It has been an absolute honour and a privilege to be the candidate for Lindsay and to go out there every day since January and fight hard for the community that I love,” Ms Husar said.

Ms Husar paid tribute to her children, who she said had been “extraordinarily patient” during the long campaign. She said they’d been working on a “request list” should their mum become the MP for Lindsay.

On Monday, Ms Husar was joined by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Deputy Leader Tanya Plibersek at Westfield Penrith, where they thanked local voters for their support.

“It is really important for me to come out to western Sydney today... because we want to say thank you to the hundreds of thousands of people who voted Labor on Saturday and I’m here to say that we won’t let you down,” Mr Shorten said.

He labelled Ms Husar and Macquarie candidate Susan Templeman, who also won her seat, as Labor’s “warriors of the west”.

Labor achieved a swing of around 4.6 per cent in Lindsay (two party preferred).

t was the election night bloodbath that nobody saw coming.

The bookies, the experts and the Liberal Party itself thought Fiona Scott would hold on to the traditionally bellwether seat of Lindsay at last Saturday’s election, but as results started to filter through, it was clear that Ms Scott was in trouble.

To help secure the seat, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Lindsay on election day, catching the train to Penrith with his wife Lucy before joining Ms Scott at Penrith South Public School.

It wasn’t enough to stop Labor’s momentum, however, with a two party preferred swing of around 4.6 per cent to Emma Husar.

Ms Scott didn’t concede defeat at her election night party at Panthers Leagues Club, instead declaring it too close to call and thanking her volunteers and supporters for their assistance.

“Over the last three years we have worked hard in this seat of Lindsay to be able to reinvigorate and to reimagine what this part of western Sydney can be,” Ms Scott said on Saturday night.

“I’d like to thank all of you for the belief that you’ve had in this seat of Lindsay and in me and the campaign we’ve run up to this day.”

Penrith Deputy Mayor and veteran Liberal Party member, Ross Fowler, said he was surprised that the swing away from the Coalition was so strong.

“I thought the Medicare scare campaign was quite telling but then again there was nothing really done to effectively counteract it,” Cr Fowler said.

“There’s definitely a message in it.... the swing over western Sydney was probably about eight per cent plus. Interestingly the swing in Lindsay was only about four per cent, which was half of the average of the rest of western Sydney, which indicates to me that Fiona must have been doing a reasonable job as far as the electorate was concerned.”

Mr Fowler said Ms Scott “certainly worked hard” for the Penrith community during her three years representing the city in Canberra.

“She was very active in lobbying for road improvements and infrastructure improvements and quite supportive of the vision that Penrith Council had in relation to widening Mulgoa Road and improving the river precinct,” he said.

hen both Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten made unscheduled visits to the Lindsay electorate last Saturday, it was evident that something quite extraordinary and unexpected was unfolding.

Despite the bookies and experts saying that the Liberals would be returned in Lindsay, the appearance of both leaders on election day suggested that internal polling was telling a different story.

As I spoke to people over the final few days of the campaign and on election day itself, it was becoming clear that a number of issues were swaying people away from Liberal candidate Fiona Scott.

Some were out of her control – such as the State Government’s paltry $1 million commitment to Nepean Hospital for upgrade ‘planning’ in the recent Budget.

Locals were steaming over this issue and the Liberals took a hit as a result.

The other topic that was raised quite often was the leadership challenge in September last year. Locals weren’t happy with Ms Scott’s refusal to reveal who she voted for in the spill and quite clearly felt sorry for Tony Abbott who had such a visual presence in Lindsay during the 2013 election campaign.

There is also no question that Labor’s Medicare campaign, legitimate or not, had a strong impact in the final two weeks of the election.

When the Liberal Party first wrestled the seat of Lindsay away from Labor in 1996, it was on the back of John Howard and Jackie Kelly and the emergence of ‘Howard’s Battlers’.

The ‘Battlers’ remained strongly aligned to Howard over the next decade,

with many people who had never considered voting for the Coalition previously now finding solace in the strong leadership skills of the veteran politician, who treated Lindsay with incredible respect.

The ‘Battlers’ swayed back to Labor in 2007 and 2010 but were never too far away. Abbott, despite being from Sydney’s northern beaches, was able to attract those Howard followers to his leadership style, and he approached Lindsay with similar respect and importance that was appreciated.

There is no doubt after Saturday that ‘Howard’s Battlers’ are now well and truly gone, with Malcolm Turnbull unable to connect with them, driving voters back to a party they believe better represents their values and ideals.

Turnbull cannot be blamed or criticised for being rich; he should be commended for the achievements he made in his life prior to politics.

But unlike Howard and Abbott, Turnbull simply doesn’t have the common touch.

Voters don’t believe that he understands their day-to-day lives and struggles, and as a result they don’t trust him.

That’s why the Medicare scare campaign had such significant cut through – voters didn’t necessarily believe Bill Shorten’s claims but they weren’t willing to take the risk with somebody they didn’t trust or like in the shape of Turnbull.

Labor had pinpointed Lindsay as a winnable seat for some time, identifying that the heartland may be on the verge of returning given the lack of love for Turnbull.

I don’t agree that Fiona Scott was a poor local member – I believe as a first-term MP she represented the seat of Lindsay strongly in Canberra, albeit losing her way at times.

No matter what your side of politics, there is no questioning that Ms Scott has a legitimate love and passion for this region and any suggestion that she would neglect it is simply absurd.

The end result of this election will see Lindsay remain as one of the tightest seats in the nation, which should ensure both parties keep a keen eye on how the next three years unfolds in the local area.

Much of our attention, however, will be on Canberra where at the time of writing this column, a result was still unknown.

No matter who ultimately emerges as Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull has taken a significant hit.

While leadership challenges should now be considered fatal to any government, one wonders how he will possibly hold on to his position.

ndependent candidate Marcus Cornish’s campaign has been branded a “dismal failure” by Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler, but the controversial councillor says last Saturday’s results won’t halt his political ambitions.

Cr Cornish, who quit the Liberal Party earlier this year, has confirmed he will contest this year’s local government elections in a bid to retain his spot on Council.

He attracted just 2.43 per cent of the vote at last Saturday’s federal poll and said Labor’s Medicare scare campaign played a part in his poor showing.

“The Medicare scare polarised the votes back to the main parties,” he told the Weekender.

“I take my hat off to the Labor Party for the campaign they ran even though it was not true. They played exceptionally strong politics.”

Cr Cornish said it was obvious people were unhappy with both major political parties.

“I think both parties have been guilty of taking the people of Penrith for granted,” he said.

“They need to actually listen to what the people want. I think both parties didn’t have strong candidates and have

Cr Fowler said Cr Cornish failed to make an impact on election day despite a high profile campaign.

“I think it was a dismal failure. He got two per cent of the vote despite a hell of a lot of effort,” he said.

“There was a small protest vote that went his way and that was it.”

Veteran Labor Councillor John Thain said Cr Cornish’s popularity would be tested at the Council elections.

“I think he should be highly embarrassed after claiming he’d get about 10 per cent... 2.4 is nowhere near what he claimed he would get,” Cr Thain said.

“Even in the areas where he campaigned, such as the rural areas, they ignored him.”

t’s possible that a man shot in Erskine Park last week was a victim of mistaken identity.

The victim, believed to be Selahattin Koyuncuoglu, was shot multiple times, including in his back and arm, just before 9pm last Thursday in Fantail Crescent.

The 25-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics before he was transported to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

On Monday, he was still in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“Any links the person has, including through family, will all form part of our investigation,” a police spokesperson said.

According to the ABC, Mr Koyuncuoglu could have been the victim of mistaken identity as he didn’t have any known links to gangs or organised crime.

It’s understood Mr Koyuncuoglu’s relative, who is believed to be a cousin, has links to the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle gang.

The shooting was captured on CCTV from Mr Koyuncuoglu’s relative’s home, as well as two neighbouring properties.

Investigations are continuing.

Gruesome discovery leads to anger Werrington Downs man hopes to find person responsible for his cat’s death JADE ALIPRANDI

errington Downs local David Skelton says he will never forget his cat, Treasure, after she was found wrapped inside two plastic bags and dumped in a reserve behind his house.

The five-month-old kitten was found by a volunteer for a lost and found pets Facebook page last Wednesday, June 29, after she went missing in February.

Mr Skelton said he suspects foul play and might have an idea as to who is responsible.

“Cats just don’t go missing, you put a bit of butter on their paw and they’re yours for life,” he told the Weekender.

“I can’t prove who did it but I do have a few ideas. I have put a letter out to my neighbours explaining that this has happened and it could happen again.”

“You hear about things happening but you don’t expect to see it for yourself.

I was in disbelief and was heartbroken when I found her,” she said.

“I didn’t expect her to have an owner but when I scanned for her microchip, I couldn’t believe it.”

Mr Skelton’s previous cat, 15-year-old Puss Puss, was allegedly kicked by an individual in September 2015 and later died from his injuries.

“I rescued Treasure and her brother, Ray, and I was going to keep them inside after Puss Puss,” Mr Skelton explained.

“Unfortunately Treasure escaped when the front door was opened by a visitor and she never came back.”

Mr Skelton made a statement to police the day Treasure was found but after months of varying weather conditions – possibly tampering with the evidence – it looks unlikely that he will receive any answers as to who is responsible.

“I’d like to see whoever is responsible [for Treasure’s death] stand on animal cruelty charges,” he said.

$30,000 for Council to tackle litter problems Penrith City Council will receive a $30,000 NSW Government grant to tackle litter in Penrith.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said Council would receive a share of more than $1.2 million in grant funding for NSW litter initiatives under the government’s round three Council Litter Prevention grants program.

“Councils know where their litter hotspots are and they know how to tackle them better than anyone,” Mr Ayres said.

“This project will aim to reduce the level of food/drink packaging and cigarette butt litter throughout the pedestrian throughways and along the adjacent road verges near key access points surrounding Nepean Hospital.”

Penrith community organisations Muru Mittigar and West Connect Domestic Violence Services (WCDVS) have been awarded with Westpac Foundation Community Grants worth a combined total of $20,000 in support of their outstanding efforts improving the lives of women at risk and Indigenous Australians.

Muru Mittigar, which received $10,000 in funding, is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to advance Aboriginal culture, and in particular Darug culture, improve the economic and social capacity of Aboriginal people and empower meaningful participation to enhance their role as traditional Custodians of Country.

“With the support of the Westpac Foundation, we are pioneering the Indigenous Social Procurement model with private equity and government buyers in place of the welfare system, not only creating new localised employment opportunities, but upskilling much-needed Aboriginal business leaders in the national workforce,” said Peter Chia, Muru Mittigar Chief Executive Officer.

WCDVS, which will also receive $10,000 in funding, provides domestic violence support in the local area.

WCDVS offers support and accommodation options for women and children experiencing or escaping domestic and family violence, abuse and who may be at risk of homelessness.

NAIDOC Week Penrith’s popular NAIDOC Week celebration encompassing child and youth activities, mixed touch football, a free barbeque, singers and music performances and more will be held at Jamison Park on Friday, July 8 between 9.30am and 3pm.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the annual Penrith celebrations are one of the biggest in the state.

“Penrith Council proudly celebrates the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the contributions they make to our city and we invite residents to come and celebrate too,” she said.

This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Songlines: The living narrative of our nation’. Songlines are intricate maps of land, sea and country.

Now in its 21st year, National Tree Day is a way for the community to take an active part in caring for the

Penrith City Council has continued to recognise local cultural heritage values, and to promote the City’s cultural and environmental heritage by establishing a Heritage Assistance Fund with $22,000 in funding available.

The heritage assistance fund has been set up to financially assist owners, lessees and not-for-profit organisations of heritage items and conservation areas such as buildings, houses and archaeological sites. The fund also offers grants for conservation work to properties listed in the Penrith Local Environmental Plan 2010 as heritage items or within heritage conservation areas.

Funding offered is on a $1 for $1 basis where Council contributes half of the cost of the restoration works. Works can range from $1,000 to $2,000 to a maximum of $5,000 of works.

Funding will be issued upon completion of all approved works.

This year, the Heritage Advisory Committee has opted to prioritise cemeteries for funding in the 2016/17 financial year.

This focus will involve a community workshop and education program, run by a professional Heritage Consultant for individuals that wish to learn about maintenance and restoration of cemeteries, headstone and other related topics.

The workshop will be held at Council on Wednesday, 20 July 2016 at 6.30pm. The prioritisation does not preclude other heritage items from receiving funding if it is available but it will be dependent on the number and type of applications received.

Should you wish to make an application for funding please ensure it is received at Council no later than Monday, 15 August 2016.

A successful application will demonstrate that the proposed works are essential to maintaining the significance of an item, that is, the work is appropriate from a heritage perspective.

Tributes to ‘Chuck’ The NSW Police Dog Unit has paid tribute to Police Dog, ‘Chuck’, who passed away this week.

PD Chuck was the loyal companion, partner and best friend to Acting Sergeant Luke Warburton, who was injured in a shooting at Nepean Hospital earlier this year.

PD Chuck, together with Acting Sergeant Warburton, has been involved in hundreds of jobs throughout his career.

Man fails to attend court to answer animal cruelty charges

Christopher Bell has been stung with a hefty fine after he was convicted of animal cruelty.

Mr Bell failed to attend Penrith Local Court last Thursday and had his cat cruelty matter dealt with in his absence.

He was ordered to pay $8,243.97 in vet, shelter and legal fees, fined $500 for each offence and handed a prohibition order banning him from owning an animal for 10 years.

Custody of three cats was also surrendered to the RSPCA.

Nurse tackled by man at Nepean Hospital

A man who tackled a Nepean Hospital nurse while tripping on drugs has escaped a criminal conviction.

Andrew Karl Kramer, 28, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with common assault.

The court heard the train guard was at the emergency department after suffering an “adverse reaction” to LSD and had no recollection of forcing the carer to the ground.

Although the police prosecutor conceded the offence “seemed to be an aberration”, he argued the defendant should still be held accountable.

“She had to struggle to break free from him,” he said.

“There is a community expectation that nurses in this field of work are kept safe from incidences like these.”

Magistrate George Zdenkowski took into consideration Mr Kramer’s unblemished record and deep remorse, saying he was satisfied “this sort of behaviour was not likely to reoccur”.

He was handed a two-year good behaviour bond with a condition that he seek psychiatric treatment for depression.

Serial offender ordered off the roads for two years

A man described as a “lethal weapon on

the road” has been ordered to undertake 200 hours of community service after he was nabbed driving sloshed.

Edward George Gudaitis, 46, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving.

Magistrate George Zdenkowski described the offence as “disturbing”, especially given it comes “against a background” of prior drink driving convictions.

“Self-medicating with alcohol is the worst thing you can do – it just makes everything worse,” he said, warning jail would be next.

“I’m not going to do that to you today, but should you offend again that’s what you’re looking at.”

He was disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to install an interlock device to his car for 24 months at the end of the ban.

Mental health defence questioned by magistrate

Peter Boyrazian’s application to dismiss his court case on mental health grounds has been denied.

The 20-year-old fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with carrying a knife in a public place, shoplifting and cannabis possession.

A somewhat frustrated Magistrate Georgia Knight said applications such as these “are not to be made lightly”, but it was something the court was seeing “more and more often”.

“I’m painfully aware of the frequency Section 32s are applied for in this court,” she said.

“There is nothing before me to show a connection between the offences and mental health.”

Mr Boyrazian’s lawyer submitted his client had been “off his meds” around the time of the March offence and wasn’t aware carrying a knife for self-defence was illegal.

Magistrate Knight said while the defendant’s shoplifting and cannabis

possession offences were relatively minor, arming himself with a weapon was another thing.

“Carrying a knife around – well that’s serious,” she said, adding it was more likely someone would get stabbed in those circumstances.

She said he would “only have yourself to blame” if he continued to smoke marijuana, pointing to evidence linking sustained cannabis use with poor mental health.

He was handed a nine-month good behaviour bond without conviction.

Woman claims she didn’t know her licence was suspended

Susan Rocio Olivares Orrego faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with driving while using a mobile phone and driving while suspended.

The Colyton woman told the court she was unaware she was suspended as she had changed address and failed to receive the RMS letter.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told her it was her responsibility to keep her address details up-to-date.

He dismissed the driving while disqualified charge and sat the mobile phone matter down for hearing on October 5.

Woman says she was carrying an ornament, not a knife

Deborah Smith fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with having custody of a knife in a public place.

The Kingswood woman requested a two-week adjournment to seek legal advice.

“It was an ornament,” she said.

“I don’t class it as a knife.”

She is due back in court on July 18. She is yet to enter a plea.

Local mixed with the wrong crowd before drug charge

Wendy-Ann Lennox has been hit with a fine after she was sentenced for drug possession.

Ms Lennox appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday after previously pleading guilty to the charge.

When asked why someone with no prior history had gotten involved with prohibited drugs, the defendant told the court she had “mixed with the wrong people”, but had since addressed the matter.

She was fined $400 and the drugs were ordered to be destroyed.

A charge of goods in custody was also formally withdrawn.

Night out at Panthers ends in drink driving charge

A mother-of-two has been barred from driving for six months after pleading guilty to high-range drink driving.

Penrith Local Court heard Barbra Kalanzi, 31, had been driving home from Panthers after watching a Michael Jackson tribute show when she failed a random breath test.

Ms Kalanzi’s lawyer said his client had been emotional on the night, having recently returned from burying her father in Uganda.

“You were three times over the limit when you stepped into that vehicle,” Magistrate Stephen Corry said.

“You would have known you weren’t fit to drive.”

She was convicted, fined $1,000 and ordered to fit an interlock device to her car for 24 months.

Man with drugs says he made a “stupid mistake”

Ryan Cross has been convicted of possessing prohibited drugs.

Mr Cross told Penrith Local Court on Monday he didn’t have an excuse for possessing the three tablets, only saying it was a “stupid mistake, I guess”.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told the concreter people face jail time for the offence.

“You ought to think about that next time,” he said.

He was convicted fined $300.

Two real dummies: Men to face court over car park incident

Two men are due to appear in court this month for alleged malicious damage in the Penrith Westfield car park.

At about 8.30pm on Monday, July 4, police were called to the car park after a report from a member of the public.

At the location, police spoke to two men in regards to alleged malicious damage.

The men had allegedly acquired a mannequin from a department store inside Westfield, had ripped the arms and legs off it and were using them to smash lights in the car park.

A 20-year-old Glenmore Park man and a 25-year-old Kingsgrove man were issued with field court attendance notices for ‘malicious damage’ and are both due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, July 25.

Londonderry: Man caught littering by police

A man was caught littering by police as they patrolled the Londonderry area.

At about 10am on Thursday, June 30, police were patrolling around Fire Trail Road, Londonderry, when they saw a vehicle in a track nearby.

Officers approached the vehicle that had a trailer attached to it.

An amount of dirt and other matter was behind the trailer on the ground.

Police spoke to a 27-year-old Mountain Lagoon man and he was subsequently given an infringement notice for ‘aggravated littering’.

A man was issued with an infringement notice after he was found to have two knives in his possession in Penrith this week.

At about 1.45pm on Monday, July 4, police were patrolling High Street, Penrith, when they had cause to speak to a man.

Cranebrook: Fire crews called to same house twice

A fire ripped through a vacant house in Cranebrook last week, with next to nothing remaining of the property.

At about 8.30pm on Friday, July 1, police were called after reports there was a fire in the rear yard of a vacant Department of Housing house in Challenger Way. On arrival, police spoke to a number of youths that were in or near the property.

The fire brigade extinguished the fire.

Later that night, at 2am, police were called back to the property.

The property was well alight and fire fighters were on the scene extinguishing the blaze.

The property sustained substantial damage.

Detectives would like to speak to any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to the incident.

St Marys: Police find replica pistol down man’s pants

A man appeared in court yesterday, Wednesday, July 6. after being charged with possessing a firearm in a shopping centre at St Marys.

At about 2.30pm on Tuesday, July 5, three men entered a phone shop in a shopping centre on Charles Hackett Drive with their faces covered.

Police were contacted about the men and officers from St Marys Local Area Command attended a short time later.

Officers spoke to a 21-year-old man and his two 19-year-old friends.

During a search of the 21-year-old, it’s alleged police located a replica pistol secreted in the man’s pants.

All the men were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

Are you house hunting?

I am house hunting at the moment and so have had the shoe on the other foot, so to speak, in experiencing what home buyers go through in the house hunting process.

Here are five quick tips based on my recent experience that can put you in a better position in relation to your property purchase: 1. Remember you take a property as it is, in the same state it was in when you initially inspected it. This means you need to look carefully for any existing damage during your inspection and make a note of it.

2. Make a mental note, or handwrite a list of fixtures/inclusions at the property. This is so when you meet with your solicitor you can advise them if there is anything interesting that you wish to be left behind that might not appear on the contract, for example a water tank, a chandelier or portable heating/cooling.

3. Conduct a second inspection during your cooling off period if you can.

Open homes are busy and hectic. If you are the successful buyer, contact your agent to see if you can go

through the property one more time during your cooling off period to make sure you didn’t miss anything and check that the appliances (e.g. oven) are working.

4. Talk to your mortgage broker before you start going to open homes so you can make sure you know how long you need for your cooling off period to get your finance approved.

Most agents will sign you up on a 10 day cooling off period which is usually sufficient, but some prefer five days.

5. Ask the agent to email you a copy of the Contract for the property. You will eventually take this to your lawyer for advice, but it is a good idea to flick through this Contract (in particular the Special Conditions) so you have an idea of what is in it and to see if there is anything that jumps out at you as being a problem.

Preparation is key for your own peace of mind. If you don’t buy property regularly, while it is a very exciting time, it is also a very stressful time. Know what to look for and understand the process before you hit the open home circuit.

Fire destroys Cambridge Gardens house Police are continuing to investigate after fire tore through a residential home in Cambridge Gardens last week.

At about 9.40am on Friday, July 1, emergency services were called to Newham Drive, Cambridge Gardens, where they found a house well alight.

Mayor’s News The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

Community Assistance Program Council is pleased to announce its annual Community Assistance Program (CAP) funding for local non-profit organisations and groups will open on Monday, July 11 2016.

Eligible non-profit community organisations can apply to the CAP program for grants of up to $1,200 for delivery of one-off activities and projects such as the purchase of equipment or supporting a community event or function.

Last year, close to $40,000 was distributed to 48 separate projects across the city for cultural, educational and health initiatives.

As Mayor of Penrith, I’m delighted to see how these grants make a difference to our residents through the projects they enable.

Council understands the considerable challenges faced by small community groups, especially those that rely on volunteer support and receive no other government funding.

Now in its 22nd year, I am proud of the significant role CAP grants play in supporting these organisations to provide vital social services that directly

benefit the residents of the Penrith LGA including children, seniors, people with disabilities and people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

I encourage all local hobby, volunteering and community groups to seize this opportunity and consider applying for those extra bits and pieces that go a long way to helping get worthwhile ideas off the ground or to sustain your group and make it thrive.

I look forward to the positive contributions your projects will make to Penrith’s social and cultural fabric.

Green slips set to become cheaper State Government plans to overhaul costly insurance scheme JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith motorists injured in accidents will receive better outcomes under a newly reformed Compulsory Third Party Motor Accident Insurance Scheme.

The NSW Government has proposed to overhaul the scheme in a bid to make it more affordable for road users.

Announced last Friday, July 1, Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the new scheme will provide defined benefits to all people injured in motor accidents.

“The current scheme has not been overhauled in 16 years, leaving NSW motorists paying the highest premiums in the country with the average green slip costing in excess of $600,” he said.

“A spike in low severity claims, such as whiplash and soft tissue injury, has put significant pressure on green slip prices – without reform, premiums are expected to rise 10 to 20 per cent.”

Mr Ayres said under the Government’s proposal, benefits would be introduced for low severity injuries, with lump sum compensation retained for the most seriously injured. People who are more seriously injured will continue to have access to the common law system where another driver is at fault.

“The scheme does not currently represent value for money for Penrith motorists, with only 45 cents in every dollar paid in Green Slip premiums going to the injured,” Mr Ayres said.

“The rest goes to insurer profits, legal fees, medical expenses and other schemes costs.”

The new scheme could come into effect as early as July 2017, subject to Parliament’s approval.

Paper tickets to be scrapped Paper train tickets will be totally phased out from next month.

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said that customers have embraced the Opal Card, with two million customers taking 13 million journeys a week.

“Opal is being used for 95 per cent of all public transport trips,” Mr Constance said.

“Given the enormous success, it’s now time to stop running two ticketing systems and move to one convenient system that enables future innovation.

“With the single electronic system we can move to the next stage in ticketing, with a customer trial in 2017 for tapping on with credit and debit cards.”

Since the roll-out of Opal began in December 2012 customers have taken 800 million trips and the Government has issued more than 7.5 million cards, with one million Gold Senior/Pensioner cards, 700,000 Child/Youth cards, and 350,000 School Opal cards.

“There are now more than 350 Opal top up machines placed at locations that provide coverage for 99 per cent of all train trips, and our busiest light rail stops and ferry wharves. Plus 255 of these machines sell the last resort Opal single trip ticket,” Mr Constance said.

“Presently customers who don’t have their Opal card can purchase an Opal single trip ticket through top up machines for travel on trains, light rail and ferries and from August 1 an Opal single bus ticket will become available on-board buses.”

t’s young women like 16-year-old Courtney Toon that you want to see strive to excel and never give up on their dreams – no matter how big.

The Nepean High Year 11 student wants to become a criminal lawyer, dealing with issues such as human trafficking, or pursue a career in English literature.

Whichever way she goes, the Inspiring Young Women event, held at Pepper Stadium in Penrith, has encouraged her to work hard and be the best she can be despite any setbacks.

“I’ve spoken to lots of people who studied law, and 50 per cent of them said they tried the course and didn’t like it, and that’s why I decided to have other options,” Courtney said.

“But I think this day is important particularly for our generation, for inspiration.

Everyone is driven in a different way, and it’s interesting to see how different people used their weaknesses to succeed.

“It’s always been that men have dominated over women, but I think now it’s an important time, because we are in that transition and women are taking the stand.”

Ms Toon was one of 79 students from local high schools such as Nepean CAPA, Cambridge Park, Jamison, Kingswood, Cranebrook, Glenmore Park, St Clair and Penrith Christian School who attended the event.

Gabrielle Bongiorno, Executive Manager of Corporate Services at a Penrith engineering and consulting firm, J Wyndham Prince, helped organise the day for the young women.

Ms Bongiorno said all the local young women had the chance to connect with local successful women from a range of occupations to facilitate conversation about careers, success and determination.

“It’s all about having successful local women here as a presenter or mentor, and sharing their life and career experiences and imparting that knowledge to the girls,” she said.

“Hopefully the girls walk away inspired in some way, whether it be to simply set a goal or achieve something school related, personal, or perhaps consider a different career path they hadn’t thought about.”

This is the second year the event has ran, and Ms Bongiorno hopes to hold it again next year.

She also thanked local organisations for their support.

More than a chat needed The Daily Telegraph published an article on June 18 headed ‘Naughty kids need a ‘chat’’ claiming that this was all that kids needed in order to modify their unruly behaviour. Well, I’ve got news for them and it’s all bad. Friendly ‘chats’ do not work and this has been proven many times over the years. School children must be taught discipline at an early age and they must learn that for society to remain stable, they must conform to a certain set of rules that are acceptable to the community at large. Any relaxation of these rules ultimately leads to anarchy.

We seem too preoccupied these days with a person’s human rights than in preparing them for their place in society as an adult.

Locals get behind brave Bobby’s ongoing battle JADE ALIPRANDI

Gala Ball will be held for Werrington County toddler Bobby Webber next month, as he continues the fight of his life despite doctors initially saying he wouldn’t survive a horrifying attack.

The Weekender first spoke with Bobby’s mum, Elise Webber, in February when Bobby’s alleged abuser had just faced court, pleading guilty to his charges.

The two-and-a-half-year-old was allegedly beaten by his non-biological uncle in 2014 at just seven-months-old, leaving the healthy baby boy blind and a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

Now, four months since the Weekender’s story, Bobby is enrolled in day care for one day a week and has had his therapy increased as he continues to grow stronger.

Mrs Webber said day care has had a big impact on Bobby’s life.

“Bobby absolutely loves day care – he loves being socially interactive with other children his age and it has been great for his social development,” Mrs Webber told the Weekender.

“He’s just doing fantastic in all aspects and is making great progress, which is amazing.”

It has reached almost $29,000 since being launched.

“The response from everyone has just been so overwhelming and we couldn’t be more grateful to everyone,” Mrs Webber said.

“We will never be able to show everyone enough gratitude for how they have helped our little family.”

Funds raised at the Gala Ball will go towards Bobby’s overall care and the purchase of a Honda Odyssey vehicle, which the family can then have modified to cater for Bobby’s wheelchair as he gets older.

“I really would love to see everyone on the night who have helped us so I can just thank them all for their generosity and give them a big hug,” Mrs Webber said.

The Gala Ball will be held on Saturday, August 13 at 6.30pm at the Fernhill Room inside Penrith Panthers.

Tickets to the event are $120 per person, which includes a three course meal plus beer, wine and soft drinks.

“We are looking forward to celebrating the incredible life that Bobby has,” Mrs Webber said.

Adding to his extensive list of hosting gigs, Dundas is replacing Luke Jacobz, who hosted the show for six seasons.

A fresh host is just part of a new look for ‘The X Factor’, along with triple judge combo Adam Lambert, Iggy Azalea and Guy Sebastian.

Dundas, a former Jamison High School student, said he knows what the contestants will be going through on the show.

“My career as a television host all started from winning a contest, so I know how life changing a show like this can be,” he said.

Over 100 tickets have already been sold for the event, with the hope that another 100 will be purchased within the next week.

After running the company for over three years, Director Monique Annetts said she is happy to be helping a great charity.

“It’s such an honour to be helping a charity that’s not only nationally recognised but that I’ve personally visited,” she told the Weekender.

The ball isn’t just for businesses, with local residents also invited to join in on the fun night.

A variety of items will be auctioned off on the night, as well as a range of entertainment offered and some special MC hosts including Parramatta Eels legend Brett Kenny and former Australian cricketer Len Pascoe.

“It’s going to be a beautiful night,” Ms Annetts said.

It will be held at Penrith Panthers Leagues Club on Saturday, July 16.

he short answer to whether small business owners should mix business with politics is that it is an individual decision. However, in a similar vein to the articles I posted recently on aligning your business with charities, there are some things you need to consider.

The primary risk of aligning yourself with a political party is that it can alienate your customers and hurt your brand.

Those who have strong ties to opposing parties, or even those who avoid any political ties, may avoid dealing with your business due to your views. But there are ways to minimise the potential negative effects of involvement with politics if you choose to do so: 1. Limit your support to issues, rather than political parties. Few of us could say that we agree with every issue and policy touted by a preferred political party. Supporting a particular issue distances your business and minimises damage to your brand when there are political party fallouts (as there inevitably always are!).

2. Choose localised issues. These may be geographically local or issues that are relevant to your customer base, and that align with your company’s values. For example, a local gym might support an initiative to increase physical activity for children.

3. Ensure you are informed before you show support publicly. You run a much greater risk of harming your business if you do not do a great deal of research into the political issue, party of person that you are supporting. You don’t want to find out too late that there are aspects of a political cause that you are not comfortable with.

4. Where possible, choose an issue that unites people rather than polarises them. Even though you may be passionate about an issue, it doesn’t make good business sense to damage your business by aligning with a marginal or controversial issue. This is where it can be wise to separate personal views with professional conduct.

nyone who has been in business for any period of time knows you can’t tackle everything yourself.

Sometimes you just need some help. But let’s face it, asking for help can be tough.

One of the most common characteristics of successful business people is that they are not afraid to ask questions or to seek help when they need it.

We all spend many hours worrying about a specific problem when it could have been solved with a simple phone call. There is no such thing as a stupid question!

When you detect a downward trend in your numbers, need new ideas, or just can’t find a solution to something, seek outside help. Getting real help requires having a willingness to be open and honest. Sometimes this means revealing the skeletons in your closet and, in some cases, admitting bad decisions in the past.

Recognise that ‘helpers’ come in different forms. Of course there are professionals like accountants, lawyers, consultants and specialists, on a fee for

service basis. Then there is also some not for profit organisations that are there to give you advice like our Centre.

An advisor or mentor can challenge you to think in a different way, give you access to their network and provide industry insight.

Our office has had many clients that come in for advice when they are on their ‘last legs’ in business. If we had been called on earlier, there is a very good chance we could have prevented the damage that had already been done.

Unfortunately it is sometimes a part of human nature that people wait until the last minute or when the landlord has issued an eviction notice before looking for help.

No one has the answers all the time, and sometimes business owners are too close to a situation to be able to see it clearly.

While asking for help can be tough, the right person’s advice can be critical to the success of your business.

Just like an illness, most business problems can be cured if they are detected early. If you want to survive in business, don’t wait until it is too late.

Delight for train enthusiasts

T

rain enthusiasts would never forget the moment Penrith was graced with the presence of the classic LNER Gresley A1/A3 Flying Scotsman.

The classic 1923 Pacific steam locomotive was built in Doncaster, England, before it ventured to explore the southern hemisphere.

Drawn by well-known engineer Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley, it was initially built for express passenger services from London’s Kings Cross to Newcastle upon Tyne, and further north to Edinburgh.

The Flying Scotsman was originally an A1 Class before being rebuilt and classified to the A3 design, and could reach speeds of 160km/h on average.

Interestingly, the Flying Scotsman has also been known to be related to the ‘Thomas and Friends’ character, Gordon – the large blue express passenger locomotive.

It was the first of its kind to authenticate 100 miles per hour, and maintain the speed for 12 miles hauling a whopping 217 tonnes – a world record for a nonstreamlined locomotive.

This significant advancement in rail engineering was brought to Australia in

1988 for the bicentenary of the arrival of the First Fleet.

The magnificent machine was unloaded in Darling Harbour and first travelled south to Melbourne for a railway show, before returning to NSW for a series of shows across Sydney and the Maitland Steam Festival.

The Flying Scotsman then pulled up to Penrith Station for local train enthusiasts to admire, before heading off on a long trek across the country to Perth before arriving in the Northern Territory.

Sydney got one last look at the iconic train before it headed back to England in 1989.

Queen Street was once a hub of excitement There was a time when Queen Street in St Marys was organically a busy and bustling place for locals to walk, shop and hang out in.

This photo was taken on February 28, 1969 outside of a fruit and vegetable shop on the eastern side of Queen Street

between Phillip and Chapel Streets.

At the time, the shop was owned by A. Anania and F. Mercuri, who also owned another fruit and vegetable shop located on the corner of Queen and Station Streets.

Recently, millions of dollars have gone into revitalising Queen Street once again.

It was one year ago in our July 10, 2015 edition of the Weekender that the Penrith Panthers were attempting to raise $100,000 for a local charity.

The Panthers promised to contribute $10 from every adult ticket and $5 from every child ticket sold at a last-minute local game against the Canberra Raiders to the Ronald McDonald Nepean Family Room.

There was controversy over the Penrith Business Alliance, that had just been cut off from Council funding and there were claims Council was trying to fire its CEO to ‘gain control’ of it.

The prestigious Fernhill races were cancelled for 2015, with then owner Brenda Tripp committing to work through compliance issues that made the event too difficult and expensive to hold.

Smoking in outdoor dining areas at local pubs, restaurants and hotels was banned, with fines of up to $300 for the individual caught lighting up and $5,500 for businesses that allowed it.

In sport, we spoke with local netballer Paige Hadley about her remarkable turnaround to play in the Netball World Cup just 18 months after she suffered a major knee injury.

S

ometimes, no matter how hard you try or how much effort you put in, you need a bit of luck to go your way.

Penrith’s luck has been as up and down as their scorelines this year, going from world beaters one week to a defensive rabble the next.

This weekend, lady luck is well and truly on Penrith’s side heading into the clash against Cronulla at Pepper Stadium.

Despite having not lost for more than three months, the Sharks face the Panthers without a host of stars who are on Origin duty, namely James Maloney, Paul Gallen, Wade Graham, Jack Bird and Andrew Fifita.

It is a stroke of luck for the Panthers who are desperate to take any good fortune that comes their way as they fight to

secure a spot in the top eight at the end of the season.

An opportunity certainly slipped through Penrith’s fingers last weekend, with the side leading 14-2 before their youth and immaturity took hold, ultimately losing 34-26 to the equally inconsistent Wests Tigers.

Penrith had every right to win the game – a 58 per cent share of possession, nine more sets than the Tigers, 25 offloads to 11, eight line breaks to seven and a lop-sided penalty count in their favour.

Unfortunately the statistics also tell a story of a 68 per cent completion rate, poor kick metres and 33 missed tackles.

The Panthers are likely to be a frustrating football side right up until the end of the season. It’s highly unlikely the side’s problems, much of it surrounding the youth of the squad, will suddenly be fixed in the next nine rounds of football. However, coach Anthony Griffin will simply look for them to be improved.

Griffin faces a difficult task – he needs

his football side to control the ball better and know when to play risky football and when to be a little more reserved, but equally he doesn’t want to take away from the flair and excitement that can often help Penrith dominate their opposition.

Much of that will come from experience, but as I’ve written previously it’s Griffin’s choice to have an inexperienced team – he made the call to move on veteran players like Jamie Soward, James Segeyaro and Elijah Taylor, the latter looking rejuvenated and refreshed in the Wests Tigers system.

Like any new coach, Griffin wants to build his own team. In an effort to achieve that quest, he seems to be willing to go through some short term pain for long term gain. That may be frustrating for long-suffering fans but Griffin knows the ability of his squad and where it is placed as far as being a premiership threat in 2017 or 2018.

Thanks to the luck of the draw in regards to Origin, the Panthers have every oppor-

tunity to stop Cronulla’s extraordinary winning streak this weekend. But even with so many top stars missing, the task will not be easy. The Panthers must be willing to hold the ball, and must be prepared to go through the middle and do the hard yards before the flair and excitement can step in at the back end of sets.

I’m confident Penrith will win the game but it requires a much more disciplined effort. Tip: Panthers by 8.

hile Matt Moylan ultimately earned a reprieve and will play for New South Wales in Origin III next Wednesday night, his original omission from the squad saw veteran Peter Wallace offer some handy support and advice.

Wallace played four games for NSW but his Origin career was cut short in 2009 when he himself was dumped after game II to make way for veteran half Brett Kimmorley.

The circumstances seven years ago were very similar to this current Blues situation – down 2-0 in the series and staring down the barrel of an embarrassing clean sweep.

“Matty’s fine, he found out the news on Sunday afternoon and seems to be handling it well,” Wallace said after Moylan’s initial omission.

“There’s nothing you can really say to him apart from asking him how he is.

“I went through the same thing – I was dropped after game two back in ‘09. It’s never nice or easy but as long as he’s doing alright then that’s the main thing.”

It’s been an interesting year for Wallace who not only has seamlessly made the transition from halfback to hooker, but also became the club’s oldest player after close friend Jamie Soward quit the club last week.

While the famous ‘Team Jaffa’ halves pairing acquired by the Panthers in 2014 didn’t quite get to play together as much as they would’ve liked, Wallace and Soward built a strong friendship during their time at Penrith, that will no doubt remain in tact

Penrith hooker Peter Wallace is hoping to re-sign with the club even with the latter now London-bound.

“It’s always sad to see your mates leave the club but that’s the nature of the sport unfortunately,” Wallace said.

“It’s one of the hardest things – you make good friends at the club and for whatever reason they move on or you move on.”

Even though Soward will finish his playing career in the UK Super League,

that shouldn’t be the case for Wallace, who plans on sticking around a little while longer thanks to a new one-year deal.

“I’ve had talks and they are going really well and, if everything pans out, I’ll be here next year,” Wallace said.

Ironically, Soward’s departure may ultimately save the Panthers enough salary cap space to re-sign Wallace.

H

e was described by Phil Gould as a “marquee” signing when first snapped up by the Penrith Panthers ahead of the 2014 season, but Jamie Soward’s ride at the club has ended in frustration – and in reserve grade.

Penrith last week confirmed that Soward would be immediately released from his contract.

The 31-year-old played 53 games for the Panthers. He has taken up an offer in the English Super League to play with the London Broncos.

Soward spent his last few weeks in the NRL in reserve grade after being dumped by coach Anthony Griffin following Penrith’s 24-6 loss to Melbourne.

Speaking on NRL360 last week, still decked out in Penrith colours, Soward said he thought he’d had a consistent season prior to being dropped to reserve grade after the Storm game.

fin) decided to go a different direction and play a couple of the young guys and they’ve been great,” he said.

“I think it just came my time to step aside and let the younger guys continue the culture out there now.”

Soward said it was going to be difficult to get back into the team from reserve grade.

“Hook is black and white so if he

wants something done he’s going to tell you how he wants it done and you’ve got to be able to perform to that,” he said.

“For me as far as I’m concerned I’ve left the club on great terms. I really enjoyed working with that playing group and also the people behind the scenes and I

see myself coming back there and either coaching or being part of that Panthers brand one day.”

Gould said it was totally Soward’s decision to move on.

“Jamie feels the time is now right to

pursue an opportunity to finish his career in England,” Gould said.

“How playing careers begin and end is not an exact science but he has recognised there are a number of emerging talents at the club who deserve the chance to progress.”

Soward will best be remembered for his 2014 season, in which he helped guide Penrith to the finals and within one game of the season decider.

Of his many highlights at the Panthers, his sideline conversion and field goal against the Roosters in week one of the 2014 finals will forever be a standout.

“Jamie has been wonderful for the Panthers and has done everything we have ever asked of him. He has been a leader, on and off the field, and played a key role in the development of our younger players,” Gould said.

“If Jamie sees a future for himself in coaching, once his playing days have come to an end, it is my intention that he will begin that coaching career here at the Panthers.”

Panthers CEO of Rugby League Corey Payne, who played alongside Soward at the St GeorgeIllawarra Dragons, echoed Gould’s sentiments.

“Jamie has been a great servant to this club and to rugby league in Australia,” he said.

“I wish him all the best with his future endeavours and want him to know he will always be welcome at the Panthers.”

Soward was expected to fly out to England this week.

Students from term one and term two of this year’s program shook the hands of Peter Wallace, Bryce Cartwright, Tyrone Peachey and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to receive their certificate in front of their adoring parents and teachers.

It’s always a proud moment for Brad Waugh, Panthers on the Prowl’s General

Manager, who after 15 years in operation has complete faith the programs deliver the best outcomes for the students involved.

“There’s is no doubt you’ve already seen some of the benefits our teachers have implemented,” he said to parents.

“We have programs that are measured with tangible results, but most importantly we have programs that the children enjoy.”

Director of Public Schools NSW for Penrith schools, Deb Summerhayes, said the Prowl program is a great example of ‘it takes a village to raise a child’.

“It provides positive connections not just in their families and schools but in their communities,” she said.

16-year-old Shania Kumarasamy was once one of those kids, who undertook a media program with the Prowl, and got the opportunity to meet with local media professionals.

“I’ve never been so sure about my future after completing the ‘Empower You’ program,” she said.

On the night, 30 seniors also graduated from the Prowl’s popular Adult Computer Literacy Program.

BLUES CAN BRING IT HOME I will be cheering on the NSW Blues next Wednesday night during the traditional Drew household pizza Origin event, but I must say there is a lot of question marks surrounding the game.

Blues coach Laurie Daley did make some changes, but failed to move on the older guys like Paul Gallen and Robbie Farah, resisting the calls by many for a new generation to be brought in.

I can understand both sides of the argument. Both Gallen and Farah have given their all to the Blues for a long period of time and there’s a feeling that they deserve a farewell.

However, Origin III this year needs to be about building for the series in 2017 and it does worry me a little that we’ve opted to stick with so many players who are unlikely to be there next year.

That won’t stop me cheering on the Blues though.

Meanwhile it looks like Origin scheduling will again be a discussion point after

this round with the high flying Sharks outsiders against the inconsistent Panthers despite the Cronulla boys having won 12 straight games.

The Sharks are without five or six of their best players this weekend due to Origin and will struggle against the Panthers.

It does seem unfair that such a great record will be tarnished because of Origin, but I’m still struggling to come up with an alternate that will make everybody happy.

All I know is that something needs to be done because it is a growing frustration for clubs, fans and players.

In fact it was interesting to see Bryce Cartwright stick with the Panthers this week instead of taking up the chance to be a development player again with the Blues.

It just shows how important the club competition is and how clubs are frustrated at the Origin schedule.

LOWER GRADES » Intrust Super Premiership NSW:

Without star five-eighth Jamie Soward, who was released from the club last Thursday, the Penrith Panthers suffered their first loss in weeks, going down to the Wentworthville Magpies 28-24 at Ringrose Park.

Penrith were forced to make a number of changes pre-game with Suaia Matagi and Sitaleki Akauola added to the side.

The Panthers got on the board first through winger Josh Hall but it was the Magpies who hit the lead before the break thanks to mid-season recruit Jeff Robson, who crossed over to score.

The Magpies started the second half with a bang, scoring two tries to go up 28-12.

The Panthers fought hard to get themselves back into the contest but just fell short by four points.

Try scorers for the Panthers included: Josh Hall (2), Corey Harawira-Naera and Viliame Kikau. Hall kicked four from four.

Panthers back Malakai Watene-Zelezniak and Sitaleki Akauola suffered injuries during the match but have been named to play this Saturday afternoon against the North Sydney Bears.

Guildford got off to a red hot start and lead 24-0 after 20 minutes, but a late try in the first half saw St Marys trail 24-6 at the break.

St Marys spent most of the second half chasing points, with missed opportunities and forced passes their ultimate downfall.

ifelong Penrith Panthers fan Peter Graham was there in person to watch the club’s very first home game against the Newtown Jets back in 1967.

50 years later the now respected businessman’s passion for the club has gone full circle after he was recently appointed to the Panthers Board.

company Pacific Power, and also spent six years as Director of Group Operations at Fairfax.

For three years he held the position of Chief Operating Officer at the University of New South Wales, as well as Chairman and Director of Western Sydney University College.

These days Mr Graham operates a portfolio consulting business, whose clients include various universities, IT development companies, media and engineering businesses.

Speaking with Extra Time, Mr Graham said it was a privilege to be adding Director of Panthers Rugby League Club to his decorated CV. “My wife and I have been long term residents of the Penrith area, so we have a real commitment to our community,” he said.

“While Panthers is a really good football club, it’s also much more than that – it’s a powerhouse for our whole region.”

Mr Graham said he was interested in bringing both football and community together on the Board.

“I’m certainly interested in football but I’m also interested in community development and growth, and that was my main reason for wanting to join the Board,” he said.

Along with his extensive professional career, Mr Graham has also been a great supporter of many community activities.

He was the President of Nepean High School’s P&C for five years, as well as the founding member and Executive of the Emu Plains Little Athletics Club.

Mr Graham was also a member of the Board of Uniting Care and Director of Emu Plains Sports Club.

Recently, he was involved with Panthers on the Prowl as a mentor for their ‘Building Young Men’ Program for local Year 10 students.

“My wife Bez and I have been local residents for over 40 years and have raised our four daughters in the area,” he said.

After watching Penrith’s 16-10 win over Newtown some 50 years ago, Mr Graham was hooked on footy and the Panthers culture.

“We have been loyal supporters of the Panthers since attending the first home game together back in 1967,” he said.

“We have been members of the club for many years, and season ticket holders for over 20 years.”

Mr Graham was officially appointed to the Panthers Board last Friday, July 1.

He will sit his first Panthers Board meeting later this month.

n 2007 two of Aussie music’s biggest names – Mark Seymour and James Reyne – got together for a joint tour.

Next month they’ll be doing it all again.

“Probably the biggest reason for another tour was how successful it was last time,” former Hunters and Collectors frontman Mark Seymour told the Weekender.

“It took us by surprise, it was just a bit of an experiment really in the beginning.”

Between them the pair have written more than a few iconic tracks including ‘Reckless’, ‘The Boys Light Up’, ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’ and ‘Holy Grail’.

They’ve also trodden a similar path through the music industry since fronting two of the biggest Aussie bands of the 80s and 90s – Hunters and Collectors and Australian Crawl.

“I think we face the same issues professionally; we’ve both been doing it for a very long time, we’re a similar age and we’ve faced the same difficulties,” Mark said.

“We also both really love performing, I think that’s probably one really strong bond that we have.

“It’s interesting that a lot of performers are quite reluctant to go out in case they don’t do the numbers, there’s always that

sort of fear hanging over your head, but both James and I are quite compulsive in that way. We just tend to work a lot so it just suits us both.”

Along with the joint tour Mark has been working with his band Mark Seymour and the Undertow.

Their most recent album, ‘Mayday’, was released last year and sees the prolific songwriter putting forward his views on the Australian government’s policies towards asylum seekers and what it means to be a modern day Australian.

“It is a political record, there’s no question about it, I’ve always skirted the edges of those sort of ideas in songwriting and even though I’ve written quite a few love songs as well, I try to make my songs relevant in some way,” Mark said.

While it can be a highly divisive subject, as a songwriter Mark feels compelled to put forward his views on the issue “In order for you to advocate for the interests of asylum seekers you have to just accept that you’re going to alienate, it’s just part of the game,” he said.

“You can only try to advocate on the basis that you’re talking about the lives of innocent people who are suffering and that simple message is the most potent and real idea that you can run with.”

Never one to stand still professionally Mark will also be releasing a live album early next year with Mark Seymour and the Undertow titled ‘Roll Back the Stone’.

He is also currently towards the end of

the writing process for his first fiction novel. The form may be different to his songwriting roots, but the passion for the written word is the same.

“It’s a whole different process to songwriting but I just really like the act of writing,” he said.

After the success of Original Bands Collide, the local band comp is back this month for round two.

“We are so excited to do this for a second time,” said one of the event organisers, Kye Brown.

“We have some great support from the bands and local community.”

The nine week competition will include six heats, two semi finals and

t had audiences in absolute stitches during the 80s and now the British sitcom ‘‘Allo ‘Allo!’ is coming to Werrington.

Local theatre group Henry Lawson Theatre will bring their production of the hit show to the Henry Sports Club this month.

Set in a small French inn during World War II, ‘‘Allo ‘Allo’ focused on the life of cafe owner Rene Artois as he attempted, very clumsily, to deal with the events of the war.

All your favourite characters will come to life on stage, including Herr Flick and

Officer Crabtree, as Rene attempts to help the French Resistance and fool the German officers.

The production is based on original scripts from the show, giving fans a chance to experience their favourite episodes up close and personal.

Support local theatre and grab your tickets now! ‘‘Allo ‘Allo’ will be on at the Henry Sports Club until Saturday, July 23.

DVD Kung Fu Panda 3

Rated PG // KATE REID The lovable panda Po is back on the small screen with the release of ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ on DVD and Blu-ray.

Po’s long-lost father Li Shan (Bryan Cranston) reappears and takes Po (Jack Black) on a journey to meet pandas just like him.

But the joy of the reunion doesn’t last for long when they learn of the villain Kai who is out to steal the chi from every kung fu master.

It’s up to Po and his new panda friends to defeat Kai and save the day.

‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ is a great example of an animation franchise that has managed to maintain its standards throughout successive releases.

Three films down and the storyline and characters are still as fresh and fun as ever.

Po still makes for a great protagonist and the critics seem to agree with the film receiving mostly positive reviews on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.

The animation is once again spot on, there’s fun new characters and plenty of laughs that will appeal to all age groups.

Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan are all on board once again and are joined by Kate Hudson and ‘Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston.

This is a great family film, perfect for the rainy school holidays!

Ratings for ‘The Briefcase’ have been terrible, so have the reviews, and it was never going to earn a second series based on the format.

They don’t want to show you their feet Children may feel pain or notice a change in the appearance of their feet or nails but don’t tell their parents because they fear a trip to the doctor’s office.

We encourage parents to make a habit of inspecting their child’s feet starting at a young age. Look for any changes such as calluses, growths, skin discoloration, or redness and swelling around the toenails.

Your child often trips and falls Repeated clumsiness may be a sign of in-toeing, balance problems or neuromuscular conditions.

The child complains of pain It is never normal for a child to have foot pain.

Injuries may seem minor, but if pain or swelling last more than a few days, have your child’s foot examined.

A child with any of these signs or symptoms should be promptly examined by a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

fter recent stints over in Hong Kong and Perth, Jerrad Tyson has described his return to the Western Sydney Wanderers as a ‘homecoming’.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who was a member of the Wanderers squad from 2012 to 2014, has returned to his old stomping ground after signing a one-year deal for the upcoming A-League season.

Tyson made three appearances for the Wanderers in his first two years at the club, keeping three clean sheets in his two AFC Champions League matches and his sole A-League start.

Speaking with the Weekender, the Tasmanian-born product said he was excited to be back in familiar territory.

“I said to a few of the boys that I felt like I drove to training on the first day with my eyes closed. It just felt natural, like I never left,” Tyson said.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of the new structure and set-up at the Wanderers as well as working with some of the new coaching staff.

“I think this is going to be a really big year for me and hopefully I reach my potential.”

Following his original stint at Western Sydney, Tyson departed the club for an 11 game run with Sun Pegasus before re-joining the A-League via Perth Glory.

Whilst at Perth Tyson was again met by Ante Covic, the former Wanderers keeper who forced Tyson to warm the bench for all but one A-League game.

While Tyson admits he learnt a lot under the more experienced Covic during their time at the Wanderers, he is pleased both have finally gone their separate ways.

“It’s been a bit of an unwelcome love affair really,” he said.

“Ante and I have always got on really well and when the time comes that I do get an extended run on this team, I’ll certainly utilise some of the things I learnt under him. I’m sure that’ll put me in good stead to perform well.”

When the A-League returns this October, Tyson is again expected to be the number

two goalkeeper at the Wanderers – this time behind Andrew Redmayne who enjoyed a stellar first year with the club last season.

While it’s too early to tell what Tyson’s role will be next season, he is ready to put pressure on Redmayne to perform.

“I go into every season with expectation and the intention that I want to play,” Tyson said.

“Obviously I want to make a contribution to the team on the field, and although it’s something I haven’t had the opportunity to do in the last couple of seasons, it’s certainly something that I’m coming to the club this season to do.

“This is a really good opportunity to start striving for that number one spot.”

Not only will the biennial event showcase inspiring athletes competing in a vast array of sports and games, but it’ll celebrate the gift of life.

Organisers of the Transplant Games hope the September 24 to October 1 event will spread the importance of organ and tissue donation, as well as having that discussion with family members and friends.

“There’s a serious message behind the Transplant Games and that’s to have a discussion about registering your decision [to donate your organs] on the Australian Organ Donation Register,” Transplant Australia CEO, Chris Thomas said.

“It’s so important to register because it can save the lives of 10 other people and that’s what the Australian Transplant Games are all about.”

The Transplant Games are open to transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, people on dialysis or awaiting a transplant and their supporters.

oug Rennie Fields in Kingswood have received a massive $40,000 grant from the NSW State Government for the upgrade of floodlighting for its thousands of users.

The floodlighting project will involve replacement of existing lighting to comply with current Australian standards and improve field sustainability by enabling all playing field surfaces to be utilised.

The total cost of the project will be approximately $100,000 with funding of $40,000 from the NSW State Govern-

ment. Penrith Council will contribute the balance.

“The lighting upgrade for Doug Rennie Fields will enable night competitions to take place and make evening training much safer,” State MP, Stuart Ayres said.

“I am proud to have recommended this project for funding and am certain it will be a great benefit to all the clubs which utilise this facility.”

Ice Hockey Seeing double: Bears enjoy successful weekend on the ice t was a six-point weekend for the Sydney Bears as they secured back to back wins over their cross-city rivals, the Sydney Ice Dogs and defending champions, the Newcastle North Stars.

In what is always an intense match up, the ‘Battle of Sydney’ was a display of true rivalry, which ended with a 5-4 victory for the Bears.

The Bears dominated the scoring opportunities, with Nic Kawasaki scoring a shorthanded goal just three minutes into the first period, assisted by Cameron Todd and goaltender, Anthony Kimlin. With just under six minutes remaining in the period, Todd assisted by Ryan Annesley and Brent Vandenberg pushed the Bears lead to 2-0.

Despite having the Ice Dogs nipping at their heels for the remainder of the game, the home side was able to maintain the lead and secure the win.

Rookie Jeremy Vasquez scored his first AIHL goal after only four games with the club, with Tomas Landa and Ryan Annesley rounding out the scoring for the Bears.

Last Sunday saw a shut out victory for the Bears against the North Stars, with goaltender Anthony Kimlin saving 38 shots, to help secure a 3-0 victory at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.

Around the grounds RUGBY: The Penrith Emus have been held scoreless for the third straight week, this time hammered by Northern Suburbs 73-0 in Round 16 of the Shute Shield competition.

This Saturday afternoon the winless Emus hit the road to battle Southern Districts at Forshaw Rugby Park.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have now lost seven of their last eight games after going down to the Sutherland Sharks 76-66 in Round 16 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

Penrith led by nine points heading into the final quarter before forgetting how to defend during crunch time.

The Panthers were a title contender to start the year but now look extremely unlikely to even make the playoffs. This Saturday night Penrith take on Hills District.

BASKETBALL: After a last round bye, Penrith managed to scrape home 78-75 against Sutherland in Round 16 of the Division 1 Youth League Women’s competition.

The Sharks led Penrith by two points at three quarter time before the competition-leaders edged home with a 25-20 final quarter to claim the narrow victory.

Ella Tofaeono was best for the Panthers with 15 points.

This Saturday afternoon Penrith will hit the road to battle Hills District.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens Netball NSW Premier League team have suffered their worst loss of the season, thrashed by the ERNA Hawks 81-34.

Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s team also went down to the Hawks 53-47.

Both teams will take on the Central Coast Heart in Round 11.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have continued their winning run, defeating the Randwick City Saints 105-66 in Round 13 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Phillip Aumann topscored for the Rams with six goals.

The Rams will return home this Saturday afternoon to take on Sydney University.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Ramettes are in a world of trouble, thrashed for the second straight week, this time by the Wollongong Saints 81-17 in Round 11 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 1 competition.

The Ramettes will return home this Saturday morning to battle the Wollondilly Knights.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers remain on top of the NPL 2 ladder after a gritty 2-2 draw against St George last Saturday night.

The result keeps the Wanderers at the summit of the table ahead of this Saturday’s home fixture against the Macathur Rams.

oung St Marys basketball star Kevin Achampong will travel to the bright lights of Las Vegas later this month to compete in the prestigious Fab 48 tournament.

The 17-year-old St Dominic’s student was one of 12 Australians selected to be part of the once in a lifetime opportunity that will attract the cream of young basketball talent from across the United States, as well as being attended by over 400 College coaches and scouts.

240 teams will compete in this year’s Fab 48, which is played over multiple venues across Sin City.

Achampong was selected to play for Team Oz Basketball by Sydney City head coach Warren Rosen, who will lead a strong team of 16 to 18-year-old Aussies looking to make an impact on the basketball world.

“I was a bit surprised by the selection to be honest, but after talking to my parents it felt like a great opportunity,” Achampong told the Weekender.
