New bridge will be envy of the world Work continues on new Nepean River crossing with construction set to be finished late next year EMILY NEWTON

onstruction of the pedestrian and cyclist Nepean River Bridge is well underway, with over 40 per cent of work now completed.

Once built, the bridge will be the largest main span for a shared path bridge in Australia, reaching 200 metres.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres inspected the progress of the bridge this week, after beginning construction late last year.

“The new bridge will provide a safer crossing for the hundreds of joggers, cyclists and walkers who currently use the footpath on Victoria Bridge,” he said.

“It’s a world-class bridge for a world-class river.”

Locals may have noticed the soaring 20 metre high metal construction on the eastern banks of the river, near Victoria Bridge.

This workshop is expected to be completed in two weeks and allows for the assembly, welding, painting and launch of the bridge frame.

RMS Project Manager, Anthony Dillon, said the bridge is broken into 25 metre semi-complete sections that arrive at the workshop to be put together.

“It’s a continual process that will happen throughout the whole time of it being built,” he said.

Seymour Whyte Superintendent Will Doran has worked around the world and moved to Penrith for this project.

“I have to say the community here is very lucky to have such a magnificent structure being built in your area,” Mr Doran said.

“Most of the people that work here want to be a part of something special.”

Mr Ayres said having the bridge run as a main span means it won’t interrupt rowers or water users on the Nepean River.

“We wanted to recognise how important rowing was to the usage of the river,” he said.

“When this is finished, you’ll be able to look down the river for the first time in about 160 years.

“This new pedestrian bridge will allow the community to take in the river views with new platforms and terraces on each side of the bridge.”

The metal frame of the workshop will be deconstructed and reassembled at a construction site north of Newcastle after the bridge’s completion, and the former Log Cabin site it is currently positioned on will be able to be developed by the owner subject to council approval.

The good: A champion is Horn Up until a couple of weeks ago most of us probably hadn’t heard of Jeff Horn, even though he represented Australia at the Olympic Games in 2012.

Last Sunday, just as all of us were becoming boxing experts over the course of a single afternoon, Horn fought himself into Australian sporting history by beating Manny Pacquiao in front of a huge crowd at Suncorp Stadium and an epic worldwide TV audience.

As a sport, boxing has been on the decline in Australia for some time, with many fans turning to the UFC and purists lamenting the state of the sport both nationally and overseas.

So often, sport has a way of delivering a story that saves itself. Enter Jeff Horn.

Like many “overnight success stories”, Horn’s journey to defeating Pacquiao started long before he became a household name.

He won his first Australian title all the way back in 2009, winning another in 2011 before picking up a silver medal at the Gee-Bee Tournament in Helsinki.

He reached the quarter finals of the Men’s Light Welter category at the 2012 Olympics, slowly picking up some hardcore fans along the way but barely grabbing a ripple of media attention.

Now, he’s the hottest property in Australian sport.

Horn’s win last weekend didn’t just create one hell of a story for Australian sport, but it may have saved boxing in this country.

Dead and almost buried, boxing may now make a surprise return on the back of a school teacher from Queensland just doing his best.

Whatever the real reason behind his selection snub, it certainly wasn’t formrelated.

New South Wales will win Origin III on Wednesday night and I’m predicting they’ll do it comfortably.

Just like in Origin I, the Maroons have failed to select the most in-form players, this time replacing the loyalty excuse with one of arrogance.

They didn’t learn the lesson the first time, so the Blues will have to teach it to them again.

The club that is forever re-building is now on the brink of a crisis with the preseason premiership favourites now likely to miss the Finals.

Penrith were terrible against South Sydney last Sunday afternoon, producing probably their worst performance since this season’s opening game against the Dragons back in March.

We’ll be told that it was the bookies, not the players, coach or club, who made the Panthers favourites.

We’ll be told to be patient.

Many fans are getting to the point where that patience is wearing thin.

Excuses will soon no longer be accepted.

It’s true that this is a young team that still needs some time to gel, but you get the feeling that something else just isn’t quite right at the moment.

Who knows what the problem is, but the growing frustrations of the fan base are understandable given the unfulfilled expectations of this club over the last decade.

Anne’s mission to clean up “eyesore” Finally, some action: Council set to review the condition of unsightly canal at Claremont Meadows ALENA HIGGINS

ollowing years of campaigning and self-confessed grumbling, a onewoman crusade to get a section of Claremont Meadows cleaned up is finally gaining traction.

Anne Whittaker has lived at her Mistletoe Avenue address for more than 20 years but said the unsightly mess of undergrowth that lines the canal across the road has gradually gotten worse.

“I’m sick of looking at it,” Mrs Whittaker said.

“There needs to be something done, it’s not funny anymore... it always looks neglected.”

Mrs Whittaker said while she occasionally sees dumped garbage there, it was predominately tree foliage and long grass that was being ignored or mowed around

by Council maintenance workers that were compounding the eyesore.

The senior citizen, who has taken it upon herself to pick up “what’s lying around if it’s not a wet day” every Tuesday and place the contents in her own bin, said drainage was also an issue.

“When it rains we get water views,” she halfheartedly joked.

She said if it looks untidy people were more likely to dump, describing an incident where she saw a man dragging palm leaves up the road and discarding them on the banks of the canal in broad daylight.

Councillor Greg Davies has since headed her calls for help, requesting Penrith Council review the condition of the area with a view to cleaning up the mess and placing signs reminding people not to dump rubbish.

Mrs Whittaker praised the East Ward Councillor for recently addressing the issue and bringing some much-needed attention to the suburb.

“It’s never got that far before, that’s wonderful, that’s a start,” she said.

“We pay our rates like everyone else but we’re like poor cousins.

“My son lives in St Clair and the grounds are always nice, and the new Caddens Estate is beautiful.

“It makes you wonder why nothing ever gets done around here.”

Mrs Whittaker is hopeful that Cr Davies’ intervention will ultimately lead to the situation being solved for good.

12 months of passion, commitment Lindsay MP Emma Husar celebrates one year since her shock election victory, looking back on two key was surprised with the influence that came with being in Parliament.

“Speaking on the floor of Parliament has enormous power that I underestimated,” she said.

She struggles to put into words how she feels about speaking on issues that resonate with people not only in the local community, but around the world.

The first time Ms Husar made global waves was on White Ribbon Day, November 23 last year, when she shared her experience of domestic violence as the House of Representatives came to an emotional standstill.

The second was more recently, when on June 22 Ms Husar demanded Senator Pauline Hanson apologise to “every single autistic child” after she suggested they were holding other students back.

Shortly after the incident, Ms Husar ran into the Senator at an event and the catchup “didn’t go so well” and left her feeling “even more deflated”.

“She kept trying to make excuses or tell me I didn’t read it or watch it,” Ms Husar said.

“I did both, a couple of times actually because I wasn’t quite sure I heard it right the first time.”

n the 12 months since Labor’s Emma Husar defeated Fiona Scott to claim the Federal seat of Lindsay, she has fought hard for what she believes in.

It’s easy to forget that this newcomer, who has twice made international headlines, was expected to lose the election.

“It took a long time for me to go, ‘oh, I actually won’,” Ms Husar said.

“There was this expectation that I wasn’t going to win, and I just had to keep punching through.

“The best challenge is to tell me I can’t do something, and then you can watch me do it a thousand times better than you thought I could.”

Ms Husar admits a number of community members have admitted they’ve been pleasantly surprised by her performance over the last 12 months.

“I’m not sure what they thought they we’re going to get,” she laughed.

“I expected by now to have someone tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘I didn’t vote for you, I think you’re garbage’, but that hasn’t happened.”

When asked about what she wants to achieve for Lindsay looking to the future, Ms Husar says it’s a long list.

“I’d have to stay in the job for about 20 years to get through them all,” she laughed.

While her passions of education, health and disability remain, Ms Husar is concerned about being prepared for the unprecedented growth of western Sydney.

“Our jobs deficit is one job for every 200 people that live here,” she said.

Ms Husar said this moves money out of our local economy as people must commute to the city for work, while creating a new set of lifestyle challenges.

The time spent travelling to and from work means people have less time to exercise, eat fresh and healthy dinners and get enough rest to wake up and begin the work cycle again, she says.

“If we have some investment in local jobs, some of those other mitigating factors around lifestyle diseases will be like a domino effect,” she said.

“That then flows on to our kids and how much time parents have to help with homework or take their kids to sport.”

The biggest surprise for Ms Husar in becoming a politician is not finding a work-life balance like one might expect,

but rather attending Parliament Question Time.

“It’s the most unproductive hour and 10 minutes of my day, four times a week, 18 weeks of the year,” she said.

A year in and Ms Husar is certain about one thing – she will never stop fighting for Lindsay.

Penrith’s Peachtree Hotel has a new owner.

Property group, Boyuan Holdings Limited (BHL), confirmed on Monday night that it had purchased the hotel on Castlereagh Road.

BHL’s Chief Executive Officer, Caden Wan, said the hotel purchase was part of the company’s ongoing strategy to pursue further investment opportunities across complementary sectors.

“We are excited to announce the strategic acquisition of the Peachtree Hotel,” Mr Wan said.

“As BHL continues to progress our property developments in the growth corridors of western and south western Sydney, we are now widening our scope and actively pursuing investment opportunities in key sectors which enhance our current asset base.

“The acquisition of the Peachtree Hotel is a quality investment which allows us to enter into the hotel and hospitality sector. We are currently finalising discussions with an experienced Sydney hotel operator to partner with us in the sector.

This acquisition will further enhance our growing investment portfolio in the key growth market of NSW.” Mr Wan said the site on Castlereagh Road offers significant upside for growth with potential future upgrades and refurbishments, and development opportunities.

rotection groups have welcomed a Penrith Councillor’s probe into the possibility of prohibiting cemeteries within the Mulgoa Valley, amid fears the historic site could soon become a depot for the dead.

Veteran Councillor Ross Fowler said the significant slice of history at Fernhill was worth fighting for and did not lend itself to a cemetery. “I think there’s a very strong argument to preserve what’s there for future generations and keep the beauty of the Mulgoa Valley intact,� he said.

In April, Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust announced it had entered into a due-diligence process to assess the possibility of purchasing the iconic Fernhill Estate.

President of the Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group, Lisa Harrold, said the area has statewide significance and must be protected by all levels of government. “The community has again called upon the NSW Government to acquire Fernhill to secure its conservation and heritage future and allow future generations to enjoy the 200-year-old colonial land-

scapes, which up to now have remained unchanged.�

A Rookwood spokeswoman said its objective was to conserve Fernhill, currently legally zoned for cemetery use, while developing a heritage cemetery that will meet the needs of the greater Sydney community for the next 150 years. “In order to conserve the heritage vistas within the estate, a cemetery on this property would consist of 90 per cent lawn cemetery, with low profile lawn plaques recessed into the ground,� she said. “In regard to the homestead, we plan to restore it to its former state and conserve it for future generations.�

She said a cemetery at Fernhill would offer many advantages to the community, including job creation, and would eliminate the possibility of sub-division.

But Ms Harrold argued an “assault� on Fernhill was “unwarranted and unnecessary�. “There is no shortage of cemeteries in the Sydney basin,� she said. “It is my understanding that there is sufficient burial space already DA approved to last for well into the next century.�

Man warned to stay on the right side of the law

A man with a “very unimpressive traffic record” can now occupy the driver’s seat after successfully applying to have his habitual offender declaration quashed.

Magistrate Georgia Knight warned Darren James Murdoch, 37, to “keep off the radar figuratively and literally” before granting the pardon.

“He has a poor attitude to driving safely and soberly... I hope that’s changed,” she said.

Penrith Local Court heard the fatherof-two had adhered to his court-imposed disqualification and had not infringed since February 2014.

“I think he’s matured a hell of a lot,” his lawyer submitted.

“He knows any more hiccups and he’ll be in jail.”

Magistrate Georgia Knight took into account he had served about five months of his habitual offender declaration but warned he would unlikely be extended such leniency again.

“He’d be lucky if he had a third one quashed,” she said.

Dangerous driver ordered to stay off the road

Mitchell George Dunmore has been stripped of his licence for a further 15 months after pleading guilty to driving while banned.

“Your attitude to driving on the road when you’re not allowed to is appalling,” Magistrate Georgia Knight scathed when he faced her for sentencing in Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

“You don’t have any driving while suspendeds but you will in a few minutes.”

Penrith Local Court heard Dunmore was busted behind the wheel twice when he shouldn’t have been, despite being given a warning one month before the first offence.

“On both occasions you came under notice because of your manner of driving,” Magistrate Knight said.

The court heard Dunmore was nabbed failing to stop at a red arrow line, while the second offence involved an illegal Uturn, with Dunmore giving a false name and refusing to hand over his driver’s licence to police.

He was convicted, fined $1,400 and given a supervised good behaviour bond.

Drunk driver jailed after night of destruction

A drunk driver who left a path of destruction in his wake when he attempted to get to another pub has been ordered to do jail time.

Adrian Paul Squires, 53, was sentenced to 12 months jail at Penrith Local Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to a number of offences, including high-range drink driving.

Magistrate Georgia Knight said it was the offender’s “continued determination to keep driving” despite three collisions, as well as a history of drink driving that left her with no other alternative than to send him to prison.

“In my view, the only appropriate penalty is one of imprisonment... given the very serious nature of offending, his continued determination to keep driving, the very high level of danger he posed to the public and the number of accidents he had,” she said.

The court heard Squires was driving along Macquarie Road near the Hawkesbury Road roundabout when he mounted the kerb and crashed into a street sign.

Unperturbed, he kept driving over the overpass only to rear-end the vehicle in front of him before crossing onto the wrong side of the road and crashing into an oncoming car.

When police attended the scene, they found Squires in the process of trying to change one of his tyres that had burst.

When they tried to breathalyse him, he refused, wrestling and kicking out at two constables when they tried to place him under arrest.

He later returned a reading of 0.223 and

was charged with ‘refuse breath test’, ‘resist arrest’ and ‘high-range PCA’.

He is eligible for release on parole on March 28, 2018.

Man fined after lashing out at police officer during incident

A man who “lashed out” at a female police officer trying to execute a child recovery operation has been hit with a fine.

Dylan John Wood, 20, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘assault police’ after pushing the officer out of the way in an attempt to get to his two-year-old.

Magistrate Georgia Knight said she did not regard the incident as a trivial matter, despite acknowledging the event would have aroused strong feelings of protection in the offender.

“The court is supposed to support police when they are doing the execution of their duty,” she said.

“You’re a young fellow, you’re probably pretty strong – she didn’t deserve that,” she added, refusing to deal with the matter without recording a conviction against him.

The court heard Wood, who has no prior criminal record, had previously complied with police directions to stay in the car, but had “actively re-engaged” after becoming enraged when he made a phone call to the child’s mother.

“She essentially laughed at him and hung up [when he asked her what was going on],” his lawyer said.

He was convicted and fined $800.

Hearing set for September after man denies breaching AVO Geoffery McNab has pleaded not guilty to breaching an AVO. His matter was mentioned briefly at Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he officially entered his not guilty plea.

McNab is accused of breaching an AVO at Cranebrook on February 6.

The matter was listed for hearing on September 27.

Dispute over admission part of not guilty plea

Dale John Myers has denied possessing an unauthorised firearm.

Myers appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday, June 29 where his lawyer officially entered a formal not guilty plea.

His lawyer told the court it was a situation where his client did not have physical custody of the gun, but knew it was there, adding Myers denied making admissions to police.

“My client says he didn’t make those admissions, but I also know police are not making it up,” he said.

His matter was listed for reply on August 17.

Long driving ban extended by a further 12 months

A man currently serving time for a string of offences, including a police pursuit, has been sentenced for driving under the influence of drugs.

Trevor Paul Boney, 35, appeared before Penrith Local Court via videolink last Thursday, June 29 after the matter was initially delayed while awaiting lab results.

His lawyer argued there was a “totality issue”, noting Boney was dealt with for the other matters stemming from the same period of offending earlier this year.

“In light of that, I would ask that you consider a substantial or full degree of concurrency with those matters,” she said.

Magistrate Georgia Knight found Boney, who is currently banned from driving to 2043, had meth amphetamines in his blood which would have impaired his driving.

Magistrate Knight took into account Boney was already serving a custodial sentence before handing him a two-year Section 9 good behaviour bond with supervision.

He was also disqualified for an additional 12 months.

St Marys: Man tried to escape police via push bike

A man was arrested after evading police and attempting to dispose of a prohibited weapon.

At about 10pm on Wednesday, June 28, police were patrolling Australia Street, St Marys when they have sighted a male riding a push bike with no helmet.

It is alleged that this male has attempted to evade police, and began riding faster.

Eventually, he stopped and threw an object into the bushes.

Police have spoken with the 41-year-old Oxley Park man and retrieved the item from the bushes, a black set of knuckle dusters.

The man was arrested and charged with ‘Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit.’

He will appear in court next month.

North St Marys: Woman shaken after robbery on Harris Street

Police are appealing for information after a 29-year-old female was robbed last week in North St Marys.

On Tuesday, June 27 around 6.10pm, the female was walking on Harris Street with her handbag over her shoulder.

It is alleged that another female has come from behind her, snatched her bag and run with a male person to a motor vehicle described as a sedan, and then driven off.

The victim did not receive any injuries from the theft.

The female offender is described as Aboriginal or Islander in appearance, about 18 to 23-years-old, brown hair tied up, wearing a dark coloured hoodie.

The male is described only as 18 to 23-years-old.

Investigations are continuing and police are urging anyone with information to contact them.

Emu Plains: Shirt thief busted... wearing the shirt he stole A shirt thief has made the mistake of

wearing his stolen property, leading to his arrest at O’Donoghues Irish Pub last week.

A train guard was checking the carriages of a terminated service at Emu Plains Train Station at 9.50pm on Friday, June 30 when he came across a man sleeping in the carriage.

The train guard attempted to wake the 26-year-old sleeping passenger from St Andrews, who was unhappy about being woken up.

The employee then continued his job, and stepped outside of the carriage onto the platform.

The 26-year-old followed the man, threw him against the fence and ripped the guard’s shirt off him.

Police were called and attended O’Donoghues where they found the man wearing the shirt of the employee around his waist.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘assault’ and ‘malicious damage’.

Jamisontown: ‘Ice’ found after search of woman’s handbag

Another alleged mail thief has been caught after Penrith police received reports of a woman stealing mail on Sunday morning (July 2).

Police were informed of mail theft occurring along Dent Street, Jamisontown by a woman who was leaving in a blue sedan.

At 8.25am, police stopped the vehicle on Preston Street, where a search located numerous mail items that were not addressed to the 47-year-old driver.

She denied any involvement in the mail theft.

During this time, her bag was also searched where officers found a quantity of ‘ice’.

She was charged with drug and traffic matters, and further inquiries are being made by Penrith detectives regarding possible fraud matters.

Buying a new property Buying a house is a hectic time. Usually you only have 10 or 15 minutes at the open home to look through the property and make a decision to make an offer. Here are some tips for you to think about that might not cross your mind when you’re caught up in a bidding war or deciding whether or not you want to buy a property: • The seller is required to give you the property in the same condition it was in when you first inspected it, subject to fair wear and tear. This means you should take note of any existing damage so you know what was there from the beginning.

• You need to do a final inspection of the property to check on its condition as close to settlement as possible. Usually people do this on the morning of settlement. That is why the above is so important as this is your opportunity to check that no significant damage has occurred before you settle. Once settlement occurs, any problems at the property become your problems.

• Keep a look out for potentially unapproved works. Tell-tale signs

are things like obvious extensions that have been closed in to make enclosed rooms, swimming pools and other structures that look different to the main house in age or condition. Remember, once settlement occurs, any illegal building work becomes your problem.

• Your finance pre-approval is just the start. Your lender will want to value the property to make sure you are not paying too much for it so that if they need to sell because you don’t pay your mortgage they will get their money back. Make sure you are speaking with your broker throughout the whole process, as finance approval is sometimes what takes the longest in a property purchase.

There are lots of things to think about when buying a property that might slip your mind in the hustle and bustle of house hunting.

Coles staff stop brazen thief Over $1,000 worth of property was stolen by a 37-year-old Greystanes man at Nepean Village Shopping Centre on Monday (July 3).

The man entered Coles and packed a trolley with food, electronics and clothing to capacity. He then proceeded to walk through the self serve checkout of the Coles without paying.

An employee chased after and stopped the man, and he was detained until police arrived.

While waiting for police, staff totalled the stolen property in the trolley, which amounted to more than $1,000.

The man, who had outstanding warrants, was charged with warrant matters and larceny.

oo many flames are jumping out of the frying pan and turning into a kitchen fire, prompting local firefighters to remind residents to keep looking while cooking this winter.

Fire and Rescue NSW statistics show that Penrith had one of the highest numbers of residential fires in 2016, where a flame or heat source left unattended was the contributing cause.

Penrith firefighter Trevor Eastwood said most house fires were easily preventable.

“45 per cent of fires in the home start from the kitchen,” he said.

“It takes just three minutes for a fire to take hold, but it only takes one second to prevent one.”

The biggest mistake people make is leaving the kitchen unattended, with some call outs happening as a result of someone cooking under the influence.

Over winter there is a 10 per cent rise in fires, ranging from people being too close to indoor heaters, ovens and grills being dirty or electric blankets.

Recently, Penrith firefighters have had “a lot of trouble” with people bringing LPG barbeques indoors.

Meanwhile, the improvements are not the only changes set to shape the suburb, with a majority of Councillors agreeing to re-zone seven Council-owned sites in Erskine Park and St Clair previously identified for recreation, community and drainage purposes, after they were identified as no longer meeting the community’s needs.

As part of the Planning Proposal, Ashwick Circuit and Chameleon Reserve, Dilga Reserve, Regulus Reserve and varying portions of Spica Reserve, Capella/ Canopus Park and Pacific/Phoenix Drive Park, will be changed from Public Recreation to Low Density Residential.

Although 2,627 letters were sent out notifying affected owners and occupants of the proposal, Council staff came under

fire for failing to inform 35 signatories of the public hearing due to not including an email address and only a residential address on the petition.

Supporters cited anti-social behaviour and risk of injury/damage from falling native trees, while objectors raised concerns about loss of vegetation, habitat, open spaces, privacy and over-development.

Veterans get funds The State Government has announced funding of $2,500 to assist in furnishing the new drop in centre for veterans in Penrith. “It is my pleasure to announce this funding that will go towards furniture and amenities to make it comfortable and welcoming,� said Penrith MP Stuart Ayres. “Many veterans are young men and women, in their 20s and 30s and this centre will provide a safe haven for them to have a chat and a cuppa in a nonthreatening environment.�

Brian Cartwright from the City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch welcomed the funding, saying the drop-in centre will be utilised, and to some extent run by the veterans themselves and will also be a space available to Homes for Heroes as part of their community engagement program.

Computers for RFB Erskine Park Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) will purchase new computers for education and training thanks to a State Government grant of $3,000. “Over recent years, the delivery of training and educational materials for Rural Fire Brigade volunteers has shifted online,� said Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies. “Unfortunately the Erskine Park RFB has not been able to fully utilise these facilities due to a lack of funding.�

In particular, the grant will fund the purchase of computers and computer desks to be located in the brigade centre.

These new computers will ensure that volunteers have adequate access to the latest training and education resources.

Bella the bulldog’s fight for survival St Marys man convicted of cruelty after dog found in horrible condition EMILY NEWTON

St Marys man has been found guilty of animal cruelty after RSPCA inspectors found his white bulldog in extremely poor health.

40-year-old Matthew Rickett has been convicted of five animal cruelty charges after he failed to appear in Campbelltown Local Court.

An RSPCA spokesperson said that inspectors attended a Claymore residence on November 1, 2016, in response to a complaint about a dog in poor condition.

Inspectors then found the dog, named Bella, in an emaciated state with all ribs, hips and spine very visible. “The only drinking water she had was green, and she was seized for veterinary assessment and treatment,� the spokesperson said. “A veterinarian found Bella was at the medically extreme end of emaciation, had a heavy flea infestation, hookworm infestation, mild anemia, an infected wound, and a bilateral ear infection with large amounts of foul smelling brown discharge from both ears.�

When interviewed, Mr Rickett said he had left Bella with his mother in late June 2016 and had not visited her for three to four weeks, admitting he was the person

Bella has since put on a healthy amount of weight and been adopted responsible for providing her with any veterinary treatment she required.

When found and taken by the RSPCA, Bella weighed 12.8kg, and as a result of proper care after four weeks she saw a

67.8 per cent weight gain coming in at a healthy 21.5kg. “Bella has made a full recovery in RSPCA NSW care and has since been adopted,� the RSPCA spokesperson said.

Building warning NSW Fair Trading is urging consumers to do their homework before signing a residential home-building contract, following complaints about builders demanding thousands of dollars in unexpected additional payments.

“We are hearing from consumers who thought they had entered into a ‘fixed price’ contract with a builder, only to find this wasn’t the case, and this scenario is causing them extreme emotional and financial stress,” NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said.

Fair Trading has also received complaints from consumers who were expecting a specific final-payment amount, only to find it was higher than expected, and sometimes a substantial proportion of the total contract price.

Report earns Gold Penrith Council has received a Gold Award for its 2015-16 Annual Report in the prestigious Australasian Reporting Awards. This follows a Gold Award for its 2014-15 Report and several previous Silver Awards.

Penrith scores a goal with Matildas Huge contest between Australia and Brazil to be played at Pepper Stadium NATHAN TAYLOR

n one of the biggest local sporting coups since the Sydney 2000 Olympics, an agreement between Penrith Council and Football Federation Australia will see Australia’s national women’s football team, the Matildas, face-off against the might of Brazil in Penrith later this year.

The first game in a two-match International Series will be played at Pepper Stadium on Saturday, September 16. The great rivalry between the two teams – ranked seventh and eighth in the world – is expected to produce a thriller of a match and a near sell-out crowd.

Speaking at Wednesday’s historic announcement, Mayor John Thain said the popularity of football locally, particularly with women, was a major factor in bringing the game to Penrith.

“Penrith has more than 14,000 registered soccer players and a large proportion of these are female, so it makes complete sense to bring the world’s best to Penrith so our local players and supporters can watch and be inspired by them,” he said.

“We’ve also got passionate soccer fans of all ages who will be thrilled to have an opportunity to see an international game

Football fans weren’t the only ones excited about the announcement, with local businesses also expected to benefit from an increase in visitors to the city.

“Thousands of people are expected to attend the game, bringing a welcome economic boost to local businesses in the hospitality and tourism sectors,” Cr Thain said.

“Penrith’s reputation for hosting major events will be highlighted to millions of viewers watching the game on television, online and social media.

“A number of other events are planned by the Westfield Matildas to engage with the local community while they’re in Penrith.”

enrith Panthers legend Mark Geyer is encouraging darts enthusiasts to ‘target early symptoms with a bullseye’ at the Pioneer Tavern on July 21.

Geyer and Cancer Council NSW have partnered together for the fourth Darts Challenge for men’s health.

“If you’re a darts enthusiast and want to help others affected by this retched disease, keep Friday, July 21 free and join me as we hit the fight against cancer head on,” Geyer said.

Community Relations Coordinator for Cancer Council NSW Greater Western Sydney, Leanne Langdon, said the Darts Challenge helped encourage men to have ‘the talk’.

“We know men are significantly more likely than women to die of preventable cancers,” she said.

“The Darts Challenge is a great platform to encourage men to have a casual chat about their health while enjoying a game of competitive darts and raising funds for a good cause.”

“As part of the Corporate Challenge, business participants are encouraged to challenge one of their local competitors to a game of darts,” Ms Langdon said.

“The winner takes bragging rights and the loser has to generously donate $500 to Cancer Council NSW.” Ms Langdon said it was important the focus of the event was not lost.

“It is our hope that each year we can encourage even more Aussie blokes to speak up about their health,” she said.

The 2017 Cancer Council NSW Darts Challenge is at the Pioneer Tavern in Penrith at 12.30pm on Friday, July 21. The cost is $30 per head.

Breathe new life into old shoes thanks to community campaign EMILY NEWTON

giant shoe box has popped up at St Marys Village this month, encouraging customers to donate their pre-loved shoes to charity.

The donated shoes will be sold through The Smith Family’s stores, with proceeds helping to deliver educational support programs to 33,000 disadvantaged children and young people across Australia.

Rebecca Carrig, Marketing Manager at St Marys Village, said the community support for the Share My Shoes campaign has been outstanding.

“Last year’s Share My Shoes initiative was a huge success thanks to the support of our customers and this year we are hoping to double our shoe donations,” she said.

For those who don’t have a spare pair of shoes to donate or can’t bear the thought of parting with their old favourites, Mirvac Retail will donate $1 to The Smith Family for every social media post featuring a ‘Shoefie’, a shoe selfie, with the tag @ShareMyShoes.

Through ‘Shoefies’, Mirvac hopes to raise $10,000.

iving up alcohol for a month is a tough challenge for many, but for the team at Nepean Cancer Care Centre, it’s just a usual July.

This year, the team of dedicated locals have already reached the top of the national leader board in Dry July with over $44,000 raised.

Dawn Hutley is taking part in her fourth year of the challenge fundraising for the centre, and is ready to keep the donations rolling in.

“I’ve worked here for over 10 years, there

are people that have worked here since the centre opened,” she said.

“There’s a lot of dedicated staff that just want to help.

“If you ever come to Nepean Cancer Care, it’s a big family, everybody knows everybody.

“You see patients from early diagnosis to end palliative stage. You’re a part of their journey.”

This year, the team is looking at investing $38,000 for six palliative care beds that will facilitate patients to be discharged to die in the comfort of their own home.

People from across Greater Western Sydney gathered with their friends, family and workmates for a cup of tea and a bite to eat to raise money and help those affected by cancer. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and is the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia. Funds raised help support Cancer Council’s life-saving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs for people facing cancer. In the Greater Western Sydney region alone, it is predicted that an estimated 11,085 people will be diagnosed with cancer in a single year, with about 3653 deaths expected. This year Cancer Council NSW recruited 1048 morning tea hosts in Greater Western Sydney and raised $947,074 across the region to help people affected by cancer in NSW. This money will aid Cancer Council NSW initiatives, including funding world-class cancer research, providing practical and emotional support services for patients, carers, and families in Greater Western Sydney and important education programs on cancer prevention.

y husband and I have often told people that we could never work together. We understand ourselves well enough to know we would not have the required patience and would not relish the constant overlap of ‘work’ into ‘leisure’ time. We enjoy having different ‘work lives’ to talk about with each other. And we take advantage of the fresh perspective that different work experiences bring to each other’s work situations.

However, there are many businesses that are run by husband and wife teams.

Whether it has come about as the result of circumstances or from a practical desire to achieve some work-life balance, there can be many benefits to partnering in business with your partner in life.

If you are going to embark on a business venture with a partner, it is crucial to set ground rules before you start (and revisit them regularly!).

Diplomacy will be required regularly, as will the ability to concede and compromise.

If you are both determined to ‘win’ every disagreement, you will get nowhere fast!

You will need to have mutual respect for one another, recognise each other’s talents, and keep those things in mind when differences of opinions arise. This will make navigating those situations much smoother.

Most business partnerships consist of two people with different strengths and skill sets.

Where this exists, and when effective communication has taken place to delineate roles, it can result in a smoothrunning workplace.

But often, as a business matures and changes, those lines can become blurred and that is where challenges can arise.

In those instances, it is important to remember that you both have the business’ best interests at heart, even if the journey to get there is different.

And it is where the art of compromise will need to be practiced in earnest!

Learn to utilise each other’s strengths and learn to swallow your pride.

» It was a whirlwind few days for young

Panthers hooker Sione Katoa last week.

The 22-year-old re-signed with the Panthers for two more seasons last Thursday, and a couple of days later earned a call-up to replace an ill Mitch Rein in the side to play the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium.

Katoa’s new contract will see him remain with the Panthers until at least the end of the 2019 season. A former Junior Kiwis representative, Katoa was appointed captain of the Panthers Intrust Super Premiership NSW side in 2017. He’s now played three first grade matches.

» Panthers boss Phil Gould has taken the

extraordinary step of opening up about rumours surrounding former five-eighth Te Maire Martin, speaking with Fairfax’s Danny Weidler last Sunday. The rumour surrounds Martin sleeping with a Penrith teammate’s partner, and has been doing the rounds of the rugby league world for the last few months. It is untrue, as we have pointed out in this column previously. “I don’t usually respond to rumours, however this particular accusation against Te Maire has been most vicious, scurrilous and hurtful,” Gould said. “I seriously question the motivation and integrity of those who started this rubbish.” Gould said the playing group

gathered to discuss the matter after the rumour started to gain more traction.

“We had a conversation and the players dismissed it and said they wanted to support Te Maire,” Gould said. “It all started with a couple of media types who are desperate for a story when he missed a couple of games through injury. It somehow became him being stood down because of an affair. I can’t emphasise enough how wrong this is and I am speaking out today because of the hurt it has caused him and his family.” Gould’s stance is admirable however it should be pointed out that the rumour itself was largely spread by fans (many of them Penrith fans) and not the media. Gould himself brought up the rumour of “a player sleeping with another player’s wife” at a Member’s Forum earlier this year and tried to shut it down there and then, but many fans persisted with spreading it.

» A number of Penrith players re-lived

their childhood last week, jumping at the chance to buy the new ‘Crash Bandicoot’ game on PS4.

» Michael Oldfield has joined a long list of players who have only made one appearance for the Penrith club. The 26-year-old outside back was released last week to

take up an opportunity with Canberra. He made his one appearance for the Panthers against Souths at Pepper Stadium earlier this year, scoring a try on his club debut.

He was an ever-reliable performer for Penrith in the Intrust Super Premiership, scoring five tries in 12 games.

» Panthers winger Josh Mansour is a

huge English Premier League fan and is so pumped about his side Arsenal’s visit to Australia this month that he’s extended an invitation to the squad to visit Penrith and the club’s $22 million Academy. It’d be a huge coup for the Panthers if Mansour manages to convince the Gunners to head west.

» The Panthers are poised to announce

that OAK has signed an extended deal to remain the club’s major sponsor for a number of future seasons. Meanwhile, I’m told that Pepper is close to signing a new deal that would see them retain the naming rights of Penrith Stadium for another couple of seasons.

more Park Brumbies and their Mega Rump Challenge at the Silver Spur restaurant last weekend. Peter Wallace, Bryce Cartwright, Sione Katoa, Dean Whare and

Maybe I’ll have egg on my face come Finals time but after last week’s 42-14 capitulation to Souths at ANZ Stadium, I’m struggling to see the Panthers winning the required six or seven games that would have them playing in the post-season.

If they haven’t found their groove by

Round 17, it’s unlikely it’ll be found in the next nine weeks. And the chances of playing Finals footy could well evaporate in the next fortnight with tough games against Manly and the Warriors on the agenda.

On the Triple M coverage last weekend, Ryan Girdler called Penrith’s performance “unproductive” – a good summation of where the side is at right now. They didn’t appear interested in wrestling back momentum once it had been lost mid-way through the first half, and were completely out-enthused and out-played by a side that has been poor for most of the year.

Manly played in tough conditions over in Perth last weekend and there’s no doubt their preparation for this game would have been impacted by such a long road trip, but Penrith will need more than that on their side to beat the third placed team this weekend.

Down 16-0 against the Warriors, the Sea Eagles found the grit and determination that Penrith lack to eventually wrestle control of the game and collect the two competition points.

The Sea Eagles have developed a killer attitude under Trent Barrett this year and are starting to really hit their straps at the right time of the season, and while their forwards have been impressive enough it’s their backs that have really been doing the hard yards and shining through in the stats. Tom Trbojevic and Dylan Walker in particular should be on coach Anthony Griffin’s whiteboard this week.

With Josh Mansour being found out by the high ball twice in the last fortnight, you can expect Daly Cherry-Evans to target his wing with a few big bombs on Saturday night.

Manly are certain to have a good crack at Penrith’s right-side defence too given how easily it seemed to open up against the Rabbitohs.

Penrith were dealt some bad news earlier this week with Dean Whare suffering a broken jaw, but Tyrone Peachey comes into his centre spot and the energetic utility has been desperate for more game time, so the pieces fit together well.

James Fisher-Harris also looks set to return via the bench.

Penrith need to win this more than Manly, but I’m not convinced the Panthers are playing anywhere near well enough at the moment to snag a victory, even if the Sea Eagles are a little off their game.

Last Sunday’s loss to Souths would have been extremely confidence-sapping.

enrith players have thrown their support behind embattled coach Anthony Griffin despite a number of disgruntled fans calling for his head after last Sunday’s thrashing at the hands of South Sydney.

Fans have had an on-again, off-again love affair with Griffin since he joined the club ahead of the 2016 season.

Right now, the knives are well and truly out.

It was only a matter of weeks ago that Griffin was on the verge of being delivered a two-year contract extension but back to back losses, including a 28-point defeat to the lowly Rabbitohs, has put that plan – or at least any announcement – on ice.

Speaking on Monday afternoon, Penrith prop James Tamou said the criticism of

Griffin wasn’t warranted and fans should find someone else to blame.

“Everyone is always going to have an opinion, you just have to take it,” he told Extra Time.

“I don’t think he (Griffin) has too much to worry about; he’s loved by the players.

It’s just us on the field, we just have to turn up.

“After yesterday, the finger should be pointed at us and we have to turn it around this weekend.”

Interchange forward Tim Browne agreed with his teammate and former Origin star, labelling Griffin an “inspiration”.

“It’s just the nature of this game, everyone’s in the limelight and when things are going wrong everyone is going to point the finger at someone,” he said.

“Hook’s got some tough skin and he doesn’t let it translate down to the playing group either. He’s an inspiration.”

Meanwhile, one player taking the sole blame for Penrith’s loss to the Rabbitohs

Panthers coach Anthony Griffin and captain Matt Moylan after last weekend’s loss was captain Matt Moylan. The 26-yearold’s awful pass in the 17th minute led to an Alex Johnston intercept and the first of an avalanche of tries.

After the game the Penrith skipper took much of the blame but his teammates rallied behind him.

“Moyza came up to myself and a few of the boys and took [the blame] on his own,” Tamou recalled.

“It’s an 80 minute game, there are 13 of us on the field, and he was just doing what a captain does. But it wasn’t his fault, not at all. He has nothing to apologise for as far as I’m concerned.”

Last weekend’s loss makes Penrith’s task of making back to back Finals – for the first time since the 2003 and 2004 seasons – even tougher.

Needing to win at least six of the remaining nine games to have a chance of scraping into the top eight, Tamou said the belief amongst the playing group took a big hit on Sunday.

“The belief is shaken at the moment… we took a step backwards yesterday,” Tamou said.

“After a scoreline like that, it’s always tough, and we’re just making it harder for ourselves to get into the top eight.”

ust 24 hours after the horrific loss to South Sydney, Panthers players put on a brave face on Monday afternoon while conducting a juniors skills and drills clinic at the Rugby League Academy.

Despite the odd comment or two from upset young fans about Sunday’s horrible performance, the entire NRL squad took it all in their stride as more than 200 local juniors braved chilly and wet conditions to be amongst their football heroes.

“Some kids were pretty harsh,” James Tamou laughed.

“Nah, they were alright.

“It’s good to see them having fun and putting a smile on their faces. It puts smiles on our faces too.

“I applaud what the club is doing and I think there should be more of it.”

The inaugural ‘Play Like A Panther’ clinic, which featured hundreds of local players from Penrith District Junior Rugby League competitions, was deemed an overwhelming success.

Following the clinic, kids were able to obtain autographs and a selfie, proving there’s more to footy than on field results.

Panthers prop Tim Browne said mingling with young fans was helpful in taking their minds off things.

“Despite the loss being fresh in the memory bank, it’s good to get out with the kids and put smiles on their faces and have some fun,” he said.

“It was good to try and forget about what happened yesterday.”

Club officials and players will be hoping many of those young up and comers will be in attendance this Saturday night for Penrith’s first game at Pepper Stadium since Round 10.

Junior players took part in a special clinic with Panthers players on Monday afternoon The match against the high flying Manly Sea Eagles could make or break the club’s chances of making the post-season.

“It feels like we haven’t been at home for ages,” Browne said.

“We’re looking forward to getting back over the road and playing some good footy.”

The 29-year-old forward put together his best ‘pitch’ to encourage people to brave the cold and put behind the poor recent form, to watch a great game at Pepper Stadium.

“It’s going to be a good night, it’s not going to rain and we’ll put on a good show.

Hopefully we can score some points too,” Browne said.

Following the game, members will have the opportunity to mingle with players on Sunday, from 11am to 1pm, at Panthers Leagues Club.

The NRL squad and coach Anthony Griffin will be in attendance to meet and greet members at the event, before Panthers boss Phil Gould addresses the audience.

It’s sure to be an interesting afternoon.

It’s time to end the decade of dominance once and for all

T

his Wednesday night’s State of Origin decider in Brisbane is the most important game in NSW Blues history.

For so long we’ve spoken about Queensland’s dominance in the Origin arena but it’s time to put that to a stop once and for all.

Queensland are a champion team and they proved that once again in Game II when they came back at the death to win.

Nothing is easy when the Maroons are involved.

However, I truly believe this year’s Blues are the better team, but they just lacked some experience in those final few minutes in Sydney to finish the game off.

Even though NSW were in front with six or seven minutes to go, you never really thought they would close the game out – you just knew Queensland would score.

While watching, you had the feeling NSW would lose their way and they did.

Laurie Daley’s men didn’t execute the simple plays at the right time whereas Queensland could.

For three halves of footy, NSW have been the better side.

Earlier this week, NSW named the same 17 as they did in Game I and II for Wednesday’s blockbuster clash. Not since 1996 have the Blues fielded the same team for all three games.

While Queensland, well they again had some more forced changes with Darius Boyd and Johnathan Thurston missing through injury.

There has been a lot of talk this week about Daly Cherry-Evans’ snubbing from the Maroons team and, I must say, I was a tad surprised myself.

It appears Queensland have chosen a team that they feel fits best with their current system and I just don’t think DCE suits their game while Cooper Cronk and co are there.

I thought DCE would make the team, a no-brainer. But to call up Brisbane’s Ben Hunt to debut, they’ve obviously consulted with some of the senior players to come to this decision.

It’s a huge kick in the guts for DCE because he’s been outstanding for Manly this year but I’m sure his Origin career is far from over.

At the end of the day, I don’t really care who Queensland have picked and who is

missing, and neither should NSW. I just want the Blues to go up to Brisbane with the same mentality and ruthlessness as in Game I and do the job. Bring the series home!

here’s still two months of the regular season to play, but even this far out there’s a real chance that the teams who will contest the Finals in September have already separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

Round 17 was a disaster for the majority of clubs in the bottom half of the ladder, with only the Rabbitohs and Titans scoring wins out of those that are still in contention for the top eight.

Parramatta, in eighth position, are two wins clear of the Warriors, Panthers and Rabbitohs, and three wins ahead of the Raiders, Bulldogs and Titans.

The Raiders were able to string together 10 wins in a row at the end of the 2016 competition to roar their way into the Finals, but given their form, and the form of the teams around them on the ladder, can anybody see a late season surge from any of the teams who are currently on the outside looking in?

Penrith and Canberra have been massive disappointments so far this season, and their respective performances last weekend, in particular, were a long way off what both teams showed during their

thrilling charge to the playoffs in the 2016 season.

It would be overly optimistic to predict with any confidence that their best form is only a game away, and there’ll be a lot of navel-gazing going on in the football departments of both clubs.

The one glimmer of hope for the teams in the bottom eight is that the Dragons, who started the season playing tremendous football, have hit the wall during the Origin period.

If the Dragons, or the Eels, struggle to get to the finish line between now and

September, then the window will open for one of the chasers.

I’m not prepared to say it will happen, but it is sport after all, and if a school teacher from Brisbane can beat one of the greatest boxers of our time to become a world champion, then anything is possible!

inning a premiership is one of the most difficult things to do in rugby league.

Winning two of them in a row is nearly impossible.

The Panthers found this out the hard way in 2004, exiting premiership contention just one game short of the Grand Final and leaving the squad wondering what could have been.

After the title success of 2003, expectations were high for another good year.

The squad remained relatively stable and the younger members of the side were only going to get better.

Things got off to a rough start, however, when the Panthers went down 20-14 to Newcastle at Penrith Stadium, stunning the big crowd of 19,936 who turned out to see the game.

The Knights were not coming off a particularly special season, finishing

the Dragons on a Friday night in front of 21,963 fans. It turned out to be a thrilling contest, with a Craig Gower field goal ultimately getting Penrith home 31-30 after the Dragons produced a stunning comeback late in the game.

Penrith had in fact led 24-0 at one stage, and appeared to have the game sewn up at 30-12 before the Dragons fought back. In the end, Gower’s 77th minute field goal was especially crucial – the Panthers didn’t know it at the time, but had they lost that night, their season would have been over – big upsets across the weekend and the controversial finals system at the time meant that the Dragons, despite finishing fifth, were bundled out of the Finals.

The Panthers went into their Grand Final qualifier against the Bulldogs a little underdone, and lost 30-14.

Penrith led 8-4 at the break, but the Bulldogs were simply too good in the second half.

Things did get back on track though over the next month, with the Panthers stringing four wins together over the Raiders, Warriors, Roosters and Storm.

It put Penrith back on top of the ladder, but two heavy defeats to the Dragons and Broncos would bring the side back down to Earth.

With just the odd question mark floating around about Penrith’s premiership credentials, the critics were back on board when the side produced three stunning performances to finish the regular season.

First, they thrashed a hapless North Queensland 56-6 at Penrith Stadium, then defeated arch rivals Parramatta 30-20 at Parramatta Stadium. In round 26, the Panthers gave it to Brisbane 46-20 to ensure they finished fourth.

Fourth was enough to give the Panthers a home final, and they played

Concert with a twist

typical concert is made up of a collection of songs broken up by audience banter.

Stu Hunter’s ‘the migration’ is not

your typical concert.

This month at The Joan the Australian producer, composer and pianist will perform his acclaimed modern jazz suite in its 80 minute entirety backed by a 10 piece band – including a horn section, percussionists and vocalist.

It’s a unique non-stop performance that has delighted audiences and earned Stu a standing ovation during its launch at last year’s Sydney Festival.

“The audience can expect to sit down and buckle in and be taken on a tremendous ride with us, it’s a journey piece,” Stu explained of ‘the migration’.

“It’s one of those experiences where you can tune out to all those other things going on in life and tune into this moment and really be taken on a ride.

“That’s what I would be hoping the audience gets out of this.”

As a performer, playing for 80 minutes straight without a break is an intense experience, but one that Stu is no stranger to.

“There’s a certain pressure involved in not stopping,” he said.

“It’s the third suite I’ve written like this, so we are very used to that dynamic now.”

While his work is often put into the category of ‘jazz’, Stu tends to shy away from the label.

“The word jazz is just such a massive umbrella and can mean so much,” he said.

“I would describe my music as highly visual. It’s very dynamic and highly composed.

“I write for the ensemble itself and for the specific musicians, they’re all colleagues of mine and some of us go back 30 years or more together.”

This year Stu was asked to perform at the popular TEDx Sydney event, which explores a wide range of ideas from a diverse group of speakers.

“It was a real honour, I’ve always been an admirer of the TED brand and the content and ideas they want to express to people,” Stu said.

For his performance at The Joan, Stu is hoping that audiences will be just as open to a new musical experience.

“Put your preconceptions aside because what we’re doing with this incredible group of musicians is something that you’ve never seen before,” he said.

“For us it’s about connection with the audience.

“This is not a bunch of musicians on stage preaching, it’s a piece of music

Opening soon: Stage show that doesn’t Stink at all!

avid Walliams has delighted audiences around the globe with his popular comedy sketch show ‘Little Britain’.

But you might not know that the British funny man is also a prolific author, with more than a dozen children’s books under his extremely talented belt.

This July, audiences will get to experience his award-winning release ‘Mr Stink’ in a theatre adaptation at The Joan in Penrith.

The show revolves around Chloe, the loneliest girl in the world, who makes friends with a local tramp known as Mr Stink.

The two become friends and, when Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe

offers to let him hide out in the family’s garden shed.

As she tries to keep Mr Stink’s existence secret, Chloe learns that secrets can often lead to trouble.

This touching, hilarious and twisted tale is brought to life by CDC Kids, the team behind the hugely successful ‘The 13– 26– and 52– Storey Treehouses’.

‘Mr Stink’ will be on at The Joan on Saturday, July 29 at 10am and 12.30pm.

hey’re the western Sydney hip hop group that walked away with the top prize in the 2010 season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’.

Since then Justice Crew have gone on to release a string of ARIA charting singles including the mega hit ‘Que Sera’, which spent an impressive nine weeks at number one.

This July, audiences can get the full live Justice Crew experience when the group take to the Blue Mountains Theatre stage.

The eight-time ARIA nominees will

perform all their best known tracks including ‘Que Sera’, ‘Boom Boom’, ‘Everybody’, ‘Best Night’, ‘Love My Life’, plus new material like the single ‘Pop Dat Buckle’.

his July, experience a classic Irish play in the surrounds of one of Penrith’s most well-known Irish

clubs.

Penrith Gaels Club will play home to The Acting Factory’s production of James Joyce’s ‘Exiles’, an intriguing story that’s been described as a “game of cat and mouse inside a game of cat and mouse”.

Richard and Bertha Rowan reside in Ranelagh with their illegitimate son Archie. Their already shaky relationship is challenged when Bertha is propositioned by Robert Hand, just as she is growing suspicious of Richard’s relationship with Archie’s tutor Beatrice Justice.

This moral ambiguity is one of the

most interesting aspects of ‘Exiles’ according to local director Mitchell Rist.

“The audience will be left questioning which of the characters has remained faithful to their respective partners and, ultimately, whether being faithful is a requisite of love,” Mr Rist said.

“What we are asking is ‘Do societal standards affect the integrity of the family unit?’”

This is the first time The Acting Factory has produced a show at Penrith Gaels Club, so don’t miss out.

Dogs and cats are known to eat items they shouldn’t, and it can cause major problems...

Foreign body ingestion is a potentially life-threatening condition we regularly see.

The most common patient is a young dog but we can see it in any dog breed at any age. It is also common in ferrets and we see them occasionally in cats.

Animals can be very inquisitive and will often pick up items to investigate them.

Many dogs will swallow non-food items like toys, socks, underwear, batteries and ear plugs. Cats typically ingest string foreign bodies like cotton and wool, often after playing with them. Many ingested items are covered with food or contain food like bones and corn cobs.

Many items can be swallowed and pass into the stomach with ease but as they move through the intestines the diameter is much narrower and they will become lodged and cause an intestinal obstruction. This prevents saliva, fluid and food from passing the obstruction.

Gas and fluid accumulate and cause pain, vomiting, inappetence and dehydration.

Bad bacteria within the gut will often proliferate and can cause septicaemia.

Large, firm items will typically cause a

complete obstruction. Smaller and softer items may cause a partial obstruction.

This means that some fluid and gas may pass the item but ingested food may not.

These items may also intermittently move along the intestine and the animal appears well for a period, then lodge and make the animal sick again. String foreign bodies will often cause plication of the bowel.

This means it will often catch at one edge of the intestines and cause it to bunch up. The string acts like a fine saw and can cut through the bowel. Some items can lodge in the oesophagus and not pass into the stomach at all.

How is a foreign body diagnosed?

Animals will often present with the typical signs of not eating, vomiting and pain. Some foreign bodies are large enough to detect with abdominal palpation. Most require imaging with radiographs or ultrasound. Some items can be seen on a radiograph, but softer items may not be visible. However, the obstruction will typically cause a pattern of gas trapping that alerts us that a foreign body is present. Ultrasound can detect smaller and softer items.

The oesophagus, stomach or intestines can become damaged by the pressure from the foreign body, the distension the obstruction causes and infection.

Damaged areas may perforate and cause peritonitis and septicaemia. Perforation

In preparing for any exam or test, confidence is the key and worry is the destroyer...

All of us get nervous when it comes to a test or exam, but you can get through it with a strong plan.

Preparation An examination is a performance, it doesn’t matter how much you know, if you can’t perform on the day you won’t pass.

Bearing this in mind, it is better to have a free night prior to any examination, so that you are refreshed and relaxed on the day.

On the examination day itself, avoid any activity that causes stress, anything that you don’t know now doesn’t matter.

At the exam 1. Always enter the examination room in a positive frame of mind. Make sure that your physiology reflects your attitude. Walk into the room as though you are the one.

2. Read the examination paper thoroughly and focus on each question.

Read the paper through at least four times.

3. The fourth reading should be after the examination has started and at which time you should mark the

paper with any relevant information that springs to mind. (e.g. formulae, questions to do first, hints etc.)

4. Decide on the order of answering the paper, starting with the easiest question first. Don’t waste any time on a question that is causing you undue difficulty, leave it and come back to it at the end of the exam if time permits.

5. Mark off each question on the examination after it has been done.

Use some code to mark questions, which have been completely done, which can’t be done, and those ones that you have left to return to.

6. Use all the time allowed for the examination.

7. If you are stuck on a question write down something, try and experiment with the given information, draw a good diagram if a diagram is required. Let your pen do your thinking.

As a nutritionist I’ve had my fair share of food related questions.

While they tend to cover a broad range of topics there are two questions that seem to come up time and time again.

This week I thought I’d address those common nutrition queries.

Is (x food) bad for me?

I started my nutrition career almost a decade ago and it’s amazing how many different foods have been labelled as ‘bad’ over that time.

Fat, carbs, gluten, meat, dairy, I’ve heard it all and no matter what food it is my answer remains the same – it’s the dose that makes the poison.

Is a piece of bread ‘bad’ for you? No. Is eating half a loaf of bread a day a good idea? Probably not.

Labelling a food as ‘bad’ is an extreme oversimplification and fails to take into account our own unique requirements and preferences.

The best advice I can give on this subject is to aim for balance and listen to your body.

I understand that, for all of us, we don’t know what we don’t know, and we may be unaware there are better options for us.

I’m continually discovering things I didn’t know about previously. I fully understand clients cruising along not knowing about better options.

What staggers me is when we contact clients that we have acquired over the years that are in outdated, expensive products to let them know we need to update their position and they can’t be bothered to do so.

Financial products have improved dramatically over the last 20 years, and policies that were once suitable are now outdated.

It wasn’t that long ago that we all had a Nokia 5110 and, at the time, it was a brilliant phone. Compared to today’s phones, it is a relic.

The cost of super funds has halved over the last decade and the features have also significantly improved.

It is worth investigating if the fund you have is still appropriate.

It is not uncommon to be able to reduce super fees by as much as one per cent of the total super balance. With average super balances climbing, this is not an insignificant saving.

Despite mortgage offerings differing substantially between banks, very few people regularly review their mortgages.

It is quite possible that you are paying a much higher interest rate than required.

It is also possible you are able to structure the debt differently to match your spending and saving habits.

In my experience, people rarely review insurances; again, this could be costing you money. In general, the sum insured required for life insurance decreases over time. You accumulate assets, reduce debts and have a shorter period to take care of your family, all of which reduce the amount of insurance you require.

Once you have the correct amount of insurance, over time this should slowly be reduced, lowering your insurance costs.

Furthermore, there may be more attractive options from other insurance providers. It is worthwhile to at least get comparative quotes.

Although reviewing your mortgage, super fund and insurances sounds like a hassle, it is quite possible

that by doing so you will be thousands of dollars better off.

Next time your financial planner or mortgage broker offers you a review, take it!

You can only end up better off at the end of the meeting. Worse-case scenario is that you spend an hour of your time confirming that you are still on track.

A lot of us have heard of it and for those that have experienced it, the degree of pain is hard to describe!

Commonly referred to as planter fasciitis, plantar fasciopathy is the most common form of heel pain that podiatrists see.

It is a pain/inflammation associated with abnormal load or lengthening to the plantar fascia through mechanical abnormalities in how we walk or run.

The plantar fascia, unlike a stretchy tendon, is a ‘rope’ like connective tissue, which supports the arch in the bottom of our foot. If we were to stretch this rope like structure to its full length and apply further force to the plantar fascia, like a rope, it eventually weakens or tears – these micro-tears are the cause of pain.

Plantar fasciopathy is commonly characterised by sharp pain either along the bottom of the heel or within the mid-section of the arch.

It typically presents during the first

few steps of a morning before easing, only to return later in the day.

There are an abundance of treatment options we see day to day at the chemist or shops for this issue, but they are normally either a short-term fix or a complete waste of money.

Treatment options normally revolve around reducing the pain/inflammation and the mechanical cause that abnormally lengthens this rope like structure.

PRICE (Protection – Rest – Ice - Compression – Elevation) management for the heel is something patients can start at home to reduce pain and associated inflammation of the area – self-massage of the heel/arch in the morning before stepping out of bed can also reduce symptoms.

Although massage and PRICE management may help with pain, they don’t resolve the underlying causes of plantar fasciopathy.

For those with persistent heel pain, a podiatry consultation may be helpful in developing an accurate diagnosis and an individualised treatment plan.

Treatments may include stretching/strengthening exercises, physical therapies, taping, footwear changes and orthotic therapy.

For chronic heel pain, good results have also been seen with shockwave therapy.

t’s an annual tradition for the Penrith Emus Rugby Club but this year’s Back to Penrith Day, held tomorrow (Saturday, June 8) at Nepean Rugby Park, is expected to be extra special.

In conjunction with the club’s major sponsor Penrith RSL, the Emus have themed this year’s Back to Penrith Day ‘Looking Forward, Looking Back’, to not only thank and recognise their sponsors, former players and members, but to

congratulate their soon to be senior and rising junior Emus stars.

“Back to Penrith Day is a such a great day for us to show the community and our members our thanks for their support for the season, and what a great opportunity to show the juniors what it feels like to be part of such a great club,” Penrith Emus President, Jeff Fox said.

Each year Back to Penrith Day coincides with Penrith’s blockbuster Shute Shield clash against crosstown rivals Parramatta.

Despite both sides languishing at the bottom of the ladder, the game is always

a fierce and fiery contest with plenty of passion on show.

Back in May, during their first match-up of the season, their Round 7 clash went right down to the wire with Parramatta narrowly getting home 26-20.

One of the highlights of this year’s Back to Penrith Day is expected to be the presentation of certificates by the club’s senior players to Penrith’s U13 State Championship-winning side.

Penrith’s U10 representative squad will also be announced on the day and issued with their jerseys.

“Penrith RSL love supporting the Emus and the community, and we have made sure that there will be entertainment for all that join us at the game on the day,” Penrith RSL CEO, Neel Chand said.

“Plus, what better day to have it than against our local western Sydney rivals in Parramatta.”

The Penrith Emus’ annual Back to Penrith Day will be held at 12pm this Saturday, July 8 at Nepean Rugby Park.

The day will include plenty of fun activities and entertainment for everyone. First grade kicks off at 3.00pm.

Proud club punching above its weight Penrith Cricket Club continues to thrive, with women’s cricket set to boom in coming seasons NATHAN TAYLOR

The Weekender’s Meet The President series introduces you to the people in charge of our local sporting clubs. This week, we chat with the President of the Penrith Cricket Club, Paul Goldsmith...

How long have you been the President of the Penrith Cricket Club for?

I started in the role in October 2014 following the resignation of our former President Ross Graham, who decided to spend more time with his family.

How long have you been involved with cricket and what were your previous roles?

I’ve been involved in the game since I was 10-years-old when I started playing for my local club, Blacktown City. These were the days of white shorts, t-shirts and bad hats.

I played what is affectionately known as ‘park cricket’ until I was 17 and started Grade cricket with Penrith when I was 18.

Prior to joining the committee as President in 2014, I had only ever been involved in cricket as a player or selector.

I played every season until 2008/09 when I retired, with the last few seasons as First Grade captain. After taking a few seasons off to spend more time with my young kids, I returned for a couple of seasons in 2011/12 to captain our Fifth Grade and Third Grade teams. I really enjoyed those last few seasons leading the younger guys on the field.

Explain what your role entails?

I assume being a President of an amateur sporting club is similar the world over.

For me it’s a very wide and varied set of responsibilities that includes leading a dedicated committee, engaging with Penrith Council, developing our cricket strategy, acting as the delegate to the Sydney Cricket Association and Cricket NSW, employing our coaches, helping with player retention and recruitment, and managing the finances.

The work that gives me the most satisfaction is supporting the players on game day and burning the odd sausage at our club events. The administration involved in running a large sporting club has to be done and, for the most part, is work – the fun stuff happens on weekends.

However, I’m just a small part of a larger team. The committee in place are extremely dedicated and passionate to ensure our players have everything they need and only have to worry about training hard and playing well on weekends.

Tell me about your cricket background, how did you fall in love with the sport?

Like many of my era, I grew up watching some of the all-time greats of Australian cricket, and my idol was arguably one of Australia’s greatest fast bowlers, Dennis Lillee. My earliest memories of watching him play were at the end of his career but he inspired me to take up the game and ultimately become a fast bowler also.

I recall watching Australia play the West Indies in a one-dayer at the SCG in the early 80’s and, while we lost to a great West Indies team, I remember watching Lillee and being impressed by his competitiveness and willingness to take the game up to some of the greatest batsmen of all time.

I have two younger brothers and we would often spend summer nights and holidays emulating the superstars of the time, by playing cricket at home or down at the local park until it was dark. As we got older, mum used to chase us out of the yard as there were too many balls hitting the house and windows. As soon as I was old enough, I started playing for the local side and from that point on there wasn’t a summer I didn’t play until I retired.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing cricket locally?

I think the challenges cricket face aren’t that different from the challenges other sports face, and that is holding on to players as they get older; in particular when they reach about 16-years-old and realise there’s a big world out there with lots of opportunities.

As we are a part of the Sydney Premier Cricket competition, we are in a somewhat unique position in that players with aspirations to play high level cricket need to go to a Premier Cricket club, and we have a large geographical area that acts a feeder to our club.

We are also very fortunate the local junior competition is relatively strong and their registration numbers are generally consistent.

need to be mindful of the challenges further growth will pose, but Penrith Council is very supportive of sport in the area and engaging all sports to understand future needs.

Are you happy with the amount of Local and State Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

Every club wants more money and we are no different but Penrith Council is overwhelmingly supportive of cricket in the area and the Penrith Cricket Club in particular.

The State Government also has a number of options available to clubs to secure funding for investment in facilities and, over the last decade or so, they have been very supportive of a number of major infrastructure developments.

These include a new pavilion and change rooms at Howell Oval, irrigation at Bill Ball Oval and Howell Oval, and a new change room facility at Rance Oval.

None of this would have been possible without the support of Penrith Council and the State Government.

There are always plenty of success stories about cricket in the Western Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

The thing I am most proud of is our club’s ability to continually be in the top four or five clubs in Sydney for on-field performance. Two seasons ago we won the Club Championship and we finished fifth last season. Over the course of the last decade we have won a number of competitions

In that regard, we are well served locally with some passionate people giving their time freely to help grow the game. Cricket Australia has also stated it will invest significant amounts of money into female cricket at a grassroots level.

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

I don’t think there is a burning issue that needs addressing for cricket in the area, but if we had to focus on one thing it would be attracting and retaining young players so they see cricket as a long-term, viable sport that they wish to be involved in until well into adulthood.

There are some minor issues with regard to ground availability, which means we

across nearly all grades and always have teams qualify for semi-final cricket.

This success is only possible because we have a dedicated coaching staff and, more importantly, a committed and talented playing group who are proud to represent our club and the broader Penrith area.

How many registered members does the Penrith Cricket Club currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

We have approximately 110 registered players across our men’s and women’s teams. We have six men’s teams, plus two teams in age-based competitions; and two women’s teams.

The number of men’s teams is dictated by the Sydney Cricket Association, so we cannot grow the men’s playing group but we hope to register another women’s team next season in the Brewer Shield U16 competition.

Penrith Cricket Club’s Paul Goldsmith Cricket Australia has a strong desire to grow the number of players in the game, with women’s cricket participation the most obvious area in which the game can grow.

As a Premier Cricket Club with teams already playing in the Sydney Women’s competition, we are well-placed to take advantage of the future investment in the game.

Where we can we support the local junior competition also, in particular the local PJCA representative teams who often train at Howell Oval. It’s extremely important that our club has a positive relationship with all levels of local cricket, so that the future stars of tomorrow see Penrith as the club they want to play with to develop their game.

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you see cricket locally in five years time?

I envisage a thriving junior competition and larger, more successful Penrith Cricket Club that continues to punch above its weight in the Sydney Premier Cricket competition. I expect to see more female teams off the back of greater investment in the game by Cricket Australia, so that more young girls see cricket as a genuine sporting option and not just a game their male siblings or dads play.

We are blessed to have one of the best facilities in Sydney and it would be great for Penrith to be a hub for western Sydney players who have aspirations to make a career in the game. We can already offer first class training facilities, and greater investment will allow us to improve our ability to produce the stars of tomorrow.

All eyes on round three Sydney Derby Wanderers fans lock key dates into their diaries after A-League releases 2017/18 official fixture list NATHAN TAYLOR

n what is set to be one of the most highly anticipated match-ups of the new season, the Western Sydney Wanderers will have to wait until Round 3 to do battle against reigning A-League champions Sydney FC. The first Sydney Derby of the new A-League 2017/18 season will be an away game for the Wanderers at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, October 21.

All 27 fixtures of the upcoming A-League season were released late last week with the Wanderers to meet Perth Glory at Spotless Stadium in the opening round on Sunday, October 8.

Western Sydney will return home again the following week to take on the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday, October 14.

The Wanderers’ blockbuster against Sydney FC will be the start of a four week road trip, which will see Tony Popovic’s men away from home until Round 7 versus Wellington.

Western Sydney will host just one Sydney Derby this season, on December 9 at ANZ Stadium, where it is hoped a new A-League crowd record will be set at the former Olympic venue.

Around the grounds RUGBY: At half-time it appeared the Penrith Emus were going to win their first game in years but it wasn’t to be, losing to Gordon 36-30 in Round 13 of the Shute Shield competition.

Everything looked good for Penrith at half-time, leading 22-5. But Gordon returned from the sheds determined to not be the Emus’ first scalp since 2015 and piled on the points. This Saturday afternoon the Emus will return to Nepean Rugby Park to take on arch rivals Parramatta.

AUSSIE RULES: Aiming for six wins in a row the Penrith Rams have been dealt a cruel blow, narrowly losing to the UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs 59-58 in Round 12 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Mitchell Stevens top scored with five goals for the Rams. Penrith will take on Sydney University this Saturday afternoon at Greygums Oval. Meanwhile, the Auburn-Penrith Giants are back in business, defeating Southern Power 48-18 in Round 11 of the AFL Sydney Premier Women’s Division competition. Melissa Brydon kicked three goals for the Giants. The Giants will battle Macquarie University this Saturday morning.

FOOTBALL: Congratulations to Werrington County resident and local referee Emma Kocbek on a spectacular debut performance in the Premier League competition last weekend.

The 19-year-old, who is a rising star at the Nepean Referees Group, was praised for her calm demeanour and professionalism throughout the match, played in Emu Plains. Kocbek is rising through the local referee ranks fast and is eyeing off a shot at the W-League in the coming seasons.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have continued their poor run of form, losing to the Sydney Comets 99-79 during Round 16 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

The Panthers will look to bounce back when they face the Bankstown Bruins this Sunday. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team had a nice win, defeating the Newcastle Hunters 58-52. Natalia Beaumont drained 15 points for Penrith. The Panthers will enjoy a well-earned bye this weekend.

AFL: The GWS Giants and Geelong Cats played out a rare 68-all draw last weekend. Despite splitting the points, the Giants still remain on top of the ladder and will take on Hawthorn this Saturday in Tasmania.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team remain winless after five rounds, going down to the GWS Fury 53-43 in Round 5 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition. Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s have lost back to back games, defeated by the Fury 53-52. Both teams will take on the Central Coast Heart in Round 6.

As always the busy Christmas period will usher in the start of the Summer of Football with the Wanderers travelling to Newcastle to play the Jets before the club’s New Year’s Day tradition continues when they welcome Tim Cahill and Melbourne City to ANZ Stadium.

That match marks the beginning of a feast of football for fans, which includes four games in 12 days to close out the Summer of Football period.

The Wanderers take on fierce rivals Melbourne Victory at home only once this season with Friday, January 19 at ANZ Stadium set as the date and venue.

The Wanderers will play at home against the Newcastle Jets, Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory in Rounds 20, 22 and 23 respectively; fixtures which bookend Round 21’s final Sydney Derby on Sunday, February 25.

Western Sydney face a tough finish to the season with back-to-back away clashes with both Melbourne sides in Round 24 and Round 25 before closing out the regular season against Adelaide United on April 15 at ANZ Stadium.

The Wanderers will again play out of Homebush this season, eagerly awaiting their eventual return to the refurbished Parramatta Stadium.
