enrith Panthers CEO Warren Wilson has been honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) on the Queen’s Birthday 2015 Honours List.

For 30 years, Mr Wilson has combined his love for both business and rugby league, and has now been recognised for his major contribution to the sports industry and western Sydney.

“I played 250 games for St Marys from under sevens, and played two years with Penrith in the Presidents Cup – the old under 21s competition in 1978-79,” Mr Wilson said.

At 19 he became Treasurer of St Marys Rugby League Club (SMRLC) and played a major role in the purchase of the 80 acres in North St Marys that the club now calls home.

“We opened that on Melbourne Cup Day 1982, and now it’s one of the largest junior league clubs in the country,” he said.

From there, Mr Wilson spent four years at Sky Channel working under some big names in the media industry before becoming CEO of TAB Limited for the next five years.

In March 2012, Mr Wilson was snapped up by Panthers Group to become its CEO and has been largely credited as the club’s saviour.

Mr Wilson said he is proud to have turned things around both on and off the field at Panthers, and is overwhelmed to have been acknowledged on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

“I don’t have a word that describes it aside from the classic cliché: it’s an honour,” he said.

wo locals who coincidentally began their careers in the same year, 1971, have been awarded for their incredible long term contributions to the community.

Out of just 717 Australians, auditor Bruce Turner from Penrith and general practitioner (GP) Dr Shiva Prakash have both been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2015 Honours List.

Mr Turner received an award for the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for driving stronger ‘checks and balances’ and accountability in government through internal auditing.

“My primary role as an internal audit and risk professional in the public sector has been focused on ensuring that entities are operating efficiently, effectively and ethically,” he said.

“This helps the three tiers of government to optimise the funds they have available to spend on health, education, law enforcement, public transport and other initiatives.

“I’m chuffed that the work of the internal audit profession is seen to be valued.”

Mr Turner said he is very proud he has fulfilled the potential that others saw in

him, and has thanked others for their time and investment in his growth over the last 40 years.

“My wife Bea has been the rock that provided the foundation for the successes achieved throughout my career. I see the award as recognition of our successful partnership together,” he said.

For his contributions as a GP since starting in the boutique Nepean District Hospital over 41 years ago, Dr Prakash has received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

“My calling was for general practice, so I left the hospital and have been practicing as a GP since 1974,” he said.

“I’m satisfied I’m doing something worthwhile, I’m satisfied I’m serving my community and my patients to the best of my ability.”

Dr Prakash said he has looked after four generations of families, and to him, being a family doctor is more than just a way to earn a living.

“In fact, being a family medical practitioner, we become a part of the extended family of our patients we care for, and we experience their highs and lows,” he said.

“When they are happy, we are happy, when they are sad, we will be part of their sadness.”

and inspiration and we are a stronger, safer and more caring nation because of them.”

Sir Angus Houston, Chair of the Council of the Order of Australia said the Australian Honours system is a great way to pay tribute to deserving Australians.

“These awards recognise the quiet achievers in our midst... people who serve the community but don’t seek accolades,” he said.

Hockey punished for simply telling the truth about home ownership Let’s start today’s column by printing exactly what Joe Hockey said about housing affordability on Tuesday.

“Well there are a range of incentives that have been put in place by state governments and others in relation to first home buyers,” he said.

“The starting point for a first home buyer is to get a good job that pays good money. If you’ve got a good job and it pays good money and you have security in relation to that job, then you can go to the bank and you can borrow money and that’s readily affordable; more affordable than ever to borrow money for a first home now than it has ever been.

“But, the response for first home buyers is to build more properties. I know, it’s a difficult concept for some to get their heads around, supply and demand, but it’s not that complicated.

“If you increase supply to meet the demand, then obviously you won’t get the growth in property prices that you may have thought if you have less supply.”

So Joe Hockey’s key point was very much about building more properties; about increasing supply to meet the demand.

But that’s all very boring, so the mainstream political media took it in a different direction.

They decided that the real story was this line: “The starting point for a first home buyer is to get a good job that pays good money”.

That sent social media into meltdown.

Joe was feeling about as much love as a vegetarian in a steakhouse.

What I don’t get about this almighty storm in a teacup is what people actually think Mr Hockey said wrong, particularly when his answer is printed in full as it is above.

Is it not true that a good first step to property ownership is having a solid job and earning a strong enough income (whether on your own or with a partner) to make that giant leap into the land of the ‘Great Australian Dream’?

Mr Hockey was not suggesting that unless you’re a doctor, lawyer or politician you can’t possibly expect to purchase your own home.

He was simply suggesting that a good starting point for anyone looking to purchase a home is to have a job that meets the needs of the home they’re looking to buy.

From there he went on to talk more about what’s required to address the housing affordability issue, in his opinion.

Poorly worded perhaps, but Mr Hockey has been criticised for essentially telling the truth.

He was saying exactly what a bank would tell you if you tried to get a home loan without the appropriate income.

But it is very difficult to tell the truth when we live in a “want it now” society.

There seems to be a section of people out there who believe that first home buyers deserve to be able to buy their “dream home” right now, and if they can’t, they somehow believe that the system or the Government of the day is letting them down.

I know that I have friends who are in their 20s or early 30s, desperate to buy in or close to the Sydney CBD who whinge and moan about house prices yet won’t consider coming further west to achieve their goals.

It’s as if it is beneath them to compromise.

I bought my first house three years ago and I’m happy to say that it’s not necessarily my “dream home”, but it is what I could afford at the time and it’s far better than paying somebody else’s mortgage off for them.

One day, I’ll hopefully be in a position to take another step up the ladder, just as my parents were and their parents before them.

I can’t help but feel that somehow, Joe Hockey has been bashed from pillar to post this week simply for saying it as it is.

Ironic, really, considering that’s what we all want politicians to do more often.

“We need to rage war against the drug, not the person,” he said.

“Don’t be afraid, ring the police, notify the police that you have a drug house in the community, speak up, or call us.”

To encourage the community to make the call, the Federal Government, NSW Police and Crime Stoppers have promised methamphetamine tip offs will remain 100 per cent anonymous.

hree years clean from the drug ice, David Collins is pleading for the community to report ice related crimes and help others recover too.

After using ice for 17 years, Mr Collins now has a full time job, and more importantly, a happy family, and said that people need to know there is hope to get clean.

“People can get off it. To the families that are involved in it – don’t give up,” he said.

“I was an addict. I used from 15 through to 32. I’m 35 now, and it was a long time but today I’m free and I’ll never go back.”

Recent BOSCAR statistics show that ice related arrests in the Penrith LGA were up 24.2 per cent, with 48 arrests in St Marys in one year – almost one a week.

Mr Collins believed he too would have wound up in jail and lost his family if he didn’t make a change.

“Ice is not designed to be in us, it’s designed to rob us and its intended purpose is to absolutely kill, steal and destroy,” he said.

“I have four beautiful children and a wife... when I was using ice I wasn’t a good father at all.”

Focusing on driving down the road toll, Operation Saturation started this week and will target risky drivers.

Police are urging all motorists to observe proper occupant restraints, manage fatigue and display responsible behaviour at all times while driving.

The operation will run until Monday, July 6 and will target speeding, drink driving and drug-driving specifically with stationary and mobile enforcement of areas in place where serious motor vehicle collisions are occurring.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, John Hartley, said the operation, which comes immediately after Operation Stay Alert, is aimed at curbing poor driver behaviour and irresponsible decision-making.

A man associated with the Rebels Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (OMCG) has been charged with offences relating to child grooming and the transmission of indecent material to a minor.

Continuing investigations into the activities of the Rebels OMCG, the Gangs Squad’s Strike Force Raptor recently executed two search warrants at a property on Pyramid Street in Emu Plains.

On Thursday, May 21, officers seized a firearm, ammunition, MDMA, an improvised explosive device and electronic devices from the property.

The 28-year-old man was charged with a range of serious offences.

After receiving conditional bail, he was again arrested on Wednesday, June 3, and charged with use of a carriage service to groom a person under 16 years of age, use of a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under 16 years of age, use of a carriage service to procure a person under 16 years of age and possess prohibited drug.

Officers will allege that upon examining the contents of his smart-phone, they uncovered evidence of a man engaging in sexually explicit correspondence with a 14-year-old girl, as well as evidence of the man transmitting indecent images of himself to the teen.

His bail was refused and he was scheduled to appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, June 4.

Investigations are ongoing.

Badgerys Creek: Man shoots himself by accident A man has suffered from a suspected accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound at a property in Badgerys Creek.

On Friday, May 29 at around 9.50pm, emergency services were called to a property on Lawson Drive following reports made about the wound.

Initial investigations suggest the man, believed to be in his 30’s, suffered from an accidental gunshot wound to the stomach while chasing dogs off his property.

After being treated at the scene by Ambulance Paramedics he was taken to Liverpool Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

rime Minister Tony Abbott has cemented western Sydney’s economic importance with a visit to convince local businesses to trade internationally.

Mr Abbott addressed a seminar at Penrith Panthers on Wednesday to encourage small and medium enterprises to export their goods and services to north Asia.

“This is western Sydney’s chance to become familiar with the free trade agreements that are going to be so much a part of our economic future,” he said.

“In partnership with South Korea, Japan and China, we have opened a door [for the businesses of Australia] and now we want you to walk through it.”

Mr Abbott said the three Asian economies are responsible for 60 per cent of Australia’s merchandise trade, and once free trade agreements are fully operational, 95 per cent of trade will be entirely duty free.

“There are many elements to a strong and prosperous economy, lower taxes, less regulation, better infrastructure... but a very important part of building a prosperous economy is freer trade.”

“We are finding a really close link between the visitor experience and the flow on effect of demand for food, wine and premium products [overseas].

“There’s a growing range of middle class people wanting our food, our experiences, our technology and our services industry.”

Mr Billson said the government wants to build on the appetite of local small businesses to export and give them the capacity, confidence and competence to do it well.

“But, it’s really about confidence, it’s something you have to be fully committed to – exporting needs to be embedded in your business plan,” he said.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said Penrith has the potential to lead the world in innovation and technology and achieve its objective to become a medical and research hub.

“UWS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bejing University of Chinese Medicine where they are going to do clinical trials and activate within the Werrington Corporate Centre and the Sydney Science Park,” Ms Scott said.

“We as a region really have so much opportunity that has been created by this Federal Government.”

elebrating a milestone very few people get to achieve in life, Evelyn Hitchenson, of Kingswood, has just turned 100, enjoying a morning tea with the Kingswood Women’s Bowling Club to mark the occasion this week.

Ms Hitchenson says she wanted to make it to 100 for her doctor.

“I have been seeing him for the past 37 years so I really wanted to show him I could make it to 100,” she said.

“He even took me out for my birthday, he was that proud of me.”

Born on May 30 in 1915, Ms Hitchenson grew up on the North Coast of New South Wales, moving to Kingswood in 1978.

She is the second youngest child of five, who have all sadly passed away.

In 1939, she married the father of her children, two boys and two girls.

He passed away from prostate cancer in 1976.

Going on to marry ‘the boy next door’, Fred Hitchenson in 1978, Ms Hitchenson became his sole carer after he suddenly went blind at the age of 43 and was born deaf.

Five years older than Mr Hitchenson, Ms Hitchenson often joked that she was the ‘Cougar’ and he was her ‘Toy Boy’.

Ms Hitchenson began playing bowls in 1988 and went on to play for the next 13 years, never holding a place in a competition but enjoying it none-theless.

Mr Hitchenson passed away the day after her 98th birthday and five days after their 35th wedding anniversary.

“The last 35 years of my life have been my most happiest with great people surrounding me,” Ms Hitchenson said.

“Mr Hitchenson was something else – he was a beautiful person.”

Penrith to learn from health leaders Trip to Nashville set to bring new knowledge to the development of Penrith’s new health precinct DALE DRINKWATER

ive local representatives are heading to Nashville, Tennessee to witness first hand a world class health and business precinct, and bring back key knowledge to Penrith.

Four Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) members and the CEO of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, Kay Hyman will undertake a five day ‘research mission’ this month to the healthcare capital of the USA. PBA Chairman Paul Brennan said the Nashville Health Council’s (NHC) model of growth will be a valuable learning tool for the Penrith Health and Education Precinct (PHEP).

“The NHC targeted their key attributes which were largely around having an airport and having universities that could grow and a healthcare industry,” he said.

“They attracted funding then pharmaceutical and biotech companies to the area and the logistics businesses to support all those.

“That then resulted in roughly 200,000 new jobs in Nashville, and about an additional $30 billion US per year.”

from the mistakes of the NHC, which boasts similar infrastructure like the proposed western Sydney airport. “[But with the airport] we have to make sure we don’t just end up with an area full of sheds with no people,” Mr Brennan said.

“There is always a risk... with large bulky goods type distribution centres that are robotic and aren’t employing the local workforce and producing quality jobs.”

Mr Brennan admitted if the airport weren’t to go ahead it would be a blow to investment but said other precincts like the Western Sydney Employment Area will still develop.

Aside from learning from the biggest economy in the world, Councillor Jim Aitken said the PBA hopes to foresee where the PHEP could be going before it gets there.

“96 per cent of businesses today won’t be around in 10 years time, they will have regenerated. We are trying to catch up to that so we know where the future lies,” he said.

The PBA’s Bijai Kumar said the road is open to take the next steps now the PHEP has been listed as one of the 28 strategic centres in the NSW Government’s Sydney Plans for Growth by 2036.

Mayor’s News The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

Aviation History – Penrith Recently Council made the decision to maximise the benefits and minimise any impacts of the proposed Western Sydney airport on our community.

This included advocating for 90 days to make comment on the eagerly awaited Environmental Impact Study and having the Sydney Airports Curfew Act amended to include, not only Kingsford Smith Airport, but also Badgerys Creek.

This is an adventurous time for western Sydney and interestingly Penrith has a long and significant history of courage when it comes to aviation.

In the early 20th century Penrith was home to a pilot’s training school, an Aerial League of Australia training ground, the site of the first cross country flight in New South Wales and the home of the first Australian to become airborne in a machine of his own design and construction.

In April 1909, shortly after the inaugural meeting of the Aerial League of Australia in Sydney, Penrith’s Belmore

Park (now known as Thornton Oval) became the training ground for its members. The site was considered an ideal spot for conducting flying experiments. In May 1911 at Eden Glassie farm in Emu Plains a man called Leslie Jones, who became a prominent figure in aeronautical engineering, became the first Australian to become airborne in a machine of his own design and construction.

In November that year, William Hart completed the first cross country flight in New South Wales when he flew from Penrith to Parramatta, completing a distance of 18 miles (29km) in under 20 minutes at an altitude of 3000 feet.

He went on to become the first Australian to receive an Aviation Licence and in 1912 set up a flying school in Penrith.

It’s interesting to look back and recognise that Penrith has always had a significant aviation history.

ravelling 540km on bicycles, the 2015 Great Victorian Bike Ride is coming up again with Penrith residents urged to follow in the footsteps of Ian Jones, of St Clair, and take the ride down south.

The event is expected to attract over 3500 riders from around Australia, ranging in all ages from toddlers travelling with parents to participants over 80-years-old.

Riding for the fourth year running, Mr Jones said it’s a great event with a lot to offer people.

“I’m originally from Victoria so to go home and tour around the state for a few weeks and enjoy the countryside is something I really appreciate,” he said.

“I love going home.”

Registrations for the 2015 Great Victorian Bike Ride are now open, with the event described as ‘the ultimate holiday adventure on wheels’.

Running for 32 years, the event is the largest multi-day bike ride in the Southern Hemisphere with Bicycle Network CEO, Craig Richards describing it as ‘an incredible escape’.

“People talk to strangers in a dinner queue, dance with teenagers and pedal over 500km,” Mr Richards said.

ocal 10-year-old Joshua Farr is in desperate need of a new manual wheelchair, and the Lions Club is coming to the rescue.

A raffle will be held this Saturday to raise the $8,900 to get the chair so Joshua can get from point A to point B around the school yard.

Currently at Werrington Public School, Joshua was diagnosed at 10-months-old with Spastic Dystonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and Lissencephaly, a rare brain formation disorder.

Joshua will use the chair for around 40 per cent of the time as he also owns a power chair but is unable to have it transported to the school each day.

“He loves going to school – he’s a really happy kid,” said Joshua’s mother, Kylie.

The Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation will be providing funds for half of the chair with the Emu Plains Lions Club putting in the other half.

The raffle will be held at the Lennox Village in Emu Plains on Saturday, June 13 with Lions members selling tickets between 9am and 3pm.

Bible values remain important In discussing same-sex marriage, editor Troy Dodds, naively asks, “what’s the harm”? (Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender June 5). Well the harm is, Troy, that once the traditional understanding of marriage has been overturned, how can any society argue against whatever else comes along? The teachings of the Bible have always been for our benefit and not to harm us.

Wilberforce stood on its principles to oppose the practice of slavery.

Reverend Fred Nile upheld its values in resisting the aims of paedophiles, which had become fashionable within sections of the Australian Left, in the 1970s and 80s. Only four decades ago the ABC radio show, ‘Lateline’, presented a program on pederasty where three men proclaimed what a great idea it was to have sex with boys. In a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald, published July 19, 1975, the then ABC chairman, Richard Downing, argued that “the phenomenon of pederasty” was appropriate for public discussion. In other words that “boylove” was an acceptable

form of sexual behaviour. So yes, Troy, the Bible will be used as a defence against issues which will ultimately be detrimental to the well-being of society.

No to same sex marriage I disagree with your view on legalising same sex marriage.

I respect your view but there are many Australians who are opposed to same sex marriage.

Just because Ireland and NZ have legalised it, and Bill Shorten wants to legalise it (because that is all he can come up with) it doesn’t mean we have to follow. For starters it goes against nature for same sex unions; whilst most religions would also oppose it.

Whilst I respect many people from the rainbow community, who are outstanding Australians and who make huge contributions to our nation, I am unable to accept them marrying. Recently, I was holidaying in Hamilton Island when I saw a young Caucasian girl, aged about four with fair hair with two middle aged men of Mediterranean appearance. I was horrified when the little girl called one of the men “Mummy”.

I just wondered how this child would develop, especially during her early teens when a girl would need a woman as a mother. It is the norm these days for people in same sex marriages to have children and I just wonder how all these children of same sex marriages will end up. So please, don’t take it for granted that we all want same sex marriage, because a lot of us don’t. The fair way to sort this out is to have a referendum.

Moral values in decline Firstly in relation to gay marriage I don’t need a political editor to tell me just what is good for me and inevitable, because he is not old enough to understand the moral decline in our society over the last forty years thanks to Lionel Murphy and Gough Whitlam who removed the no fault clause from divorce. The end result wouldn’t happen to be the 50 per cent breakdowns in marriages and subsequent divorces coupled with domestic violence which the Prime Minister now sees as an escalating national problem. responsibility marriage system where a husband and wife can get a divorce just by signing a piece of paper. The present younger generations accept that this is what is the norm. Perhaps the Editor could enlighten us as to all the wonderful results emanating from the regressive changes since the Whitlam years. I shudder to think of the ensuing legal repercussions of such a change to marriage legislation. As this is proposed as a plebiscite (a vote in parliament by the local federal member, not a referendum) perhaps Fiona Scott will tell us how she would vote on our behalf? Then again this may not happen because it seems there are more opposed to the change than for it.

Penrith City Council has drafted new rules around keeping animals on a residential property. The Keeping of Animals Local Orders Policy was prepared to inform the community of what criteria will push Council to issue an order to owners who are not meeting pet ownership responsibilities. Unfortunately, in some cases poor management and inappropriate care of animals has been highlighted to Council, and can often impact surrounding properties with noise, odour or waste. Council’s clearer guidelines now outline the number of animals that can be kept in one place and will be on public display for 30 days.

Part of Littlefields Road in Mulgoa will be graded and have its overgrown vegetation removed, to remedy drainage issues it experienced in recent heavy rainfall. There have previously been investigations on surrounding properties that may have impacted the overland flow, causing the water to pond over the roadway. The report to Council indicated that these surrounding properties were not making the problem worse, rather that water was flowing naturally off them. The culvert – a structure that allows water to flow under a road – in front of another property on Little-

fields Road had overgrown grass and needed to be cleared to allow water to flow. Council accepted that the culvert needed routine maintenance.

Council will continue to monitor several premises across Penrith after Fire and Rescue (FR) NSW inspected the sites for fire safety issues. Some of the issues that were highlighted were minor, but others may take longer to resolve and may result in fire safety orders being issued. After complaints, two premises attended by FRNSW required no further action and have not been added to Council’s Fire Safety Audit Program. 1 Memorial Ave, Penrith had minor issues such as power points being temporarily pulled from walls and 148 Station Street, Penrith did not have appropriate door handles, both sites being added to the program. After inspecting 358 Great Western Highway, St Marys, FRNSW found the building has been illegally converted into four residential units. Council ceased use of the premises and the building is now vacant.

Five units at the rear of Council’s building at 682 High Street Penrith will be demolished. The units that were built in the 1970s have previously been leased short term.

lanet Ark are celebrating 20 years of National Tree Day this year and are putting the call out for people to host a tree planting event in the Penrith area this July.

Currently on the agenda for the day, Penrith City Council will be supporting the Cumberland Plain Woodland at the bushland in Cranebrook.

Particularly important because it is a critically endangered ecological community, there is less than six per cent of this type of bushland left making it one of the rarest bushland types in Australia.

“This is the community’s chance to take part in the conservation of an important patch of bushland with the chance to meet other people from your community and make a positive contribution to the local environment,” a spokesperson from Penrith City Council said.

National Tree Day is Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event.

“We are thrilled to celebrate this 20-year milestone with Australia – especially those who have been involved year after year since the campaign’s inception,” National Tree Day Manager from Planet Ark, Debbie Agnew said.

Usually over 100 students in Years 9 to 12 participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme through the school. The scheme fits well with the other programs of the school as it encompasses physical recreation, skills, service and adventurous journey. Students can participate in the program at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Our Gold level expeditions are generally in Tasmania or New Zealand.

St Paul’s Cadet Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1998 and was the first school-based fire cadet unit in New South Wales. The brigade has its own fire station and fire engine on the school campus. The growing brigade currently consists of approximately 30 cadets from Years 7 to 11 who train once a week in basic firefighting, communications, map reading, team work and leadership, as well as participating in community service activities and regular camps. A number of our cadets have gone on to managerial employment with the NSW Rural Fire Service, during their tertiary studies.

Other co-curricular activities available for students include Christian Fellowship groups, the Annual Ball with Debutantes, HICES debating, chess, musical ensembles, drama and musical performers, HICES Maths Tournament, Tournament of the Minds and the National History Challenge.

Students cook up a storm at Outback Steakhouse ambridge Park High School has come out on top this week by taking out the Annual School’s Culinary Challenge held at Outback Steakhouse in Penrith.

Throughout the competition, students from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School, Penrith Christian School, Kingswood High School, Cranebrook High School, Glenmore Park High School and Cambridge Park High School had to complete three menu items each with the scores tallied at the end of the cook.

The heats were held last week on June 2, with the top three schools from that day invited back for the finals that were held on Tuesday, June 9.

Project Officer for Panthers On The Prowl, Graham Collins, has worked on the ‘Mini Masterchef’ competition each year and says the kids really enjoy it.

“It’s great to get the kids involved in cooking and they have a lot of fun with it and also do really well,” Mr Collins said.

Glenmore Park High School, Cambridge Park High School and Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School all made it into the final day.

When Penrith had the power!

ong before it housed the very popular Museum of Fire, the building on the northern side of Penrith Railway Station was of great significance to the people of western Sydney.

For near on two decades that very building was home to the Penrith Power Station.

According to a local studies report conducted by Don Godden and Associates in 1986, the construction of Penrith Power Station was the earliest action of the Electricity Commission of NSW, which was formed in 1951 to alleviate the chronic power shortages of the immediate post war period.

Penrith Power Station was one of four ‘package’ power stations built in the early 1950s to provide interim local generating capacity while a statewide grid based on larger regional stations was being developed.

Penrith Power Station was the first of the four plants to be completed.

Negotiations with Westinghouse began in May 1951, the contracts were signed

in July and the foundation work for the erection of the building was completed in September of that year.

The four units were commissioned into service gradually, with Penrith Power Station fully operational in June 1953.

The other stations, Port Kembla, Maitland and Liverpool were fully operational by June 1954. Unlike the later major power stations, each of these plants was directly supplying the local network, with the excess supply given to the 33KV state electricity grid.

Penrith Power Station supplied Penrith, Blacktown, St Marys, Richmond and Windsor as its local area, typically consuming as much as 50 per cent of the generated supply.

Penrith Power Station was operated with a staff of 90 men providing three-shift continuous operation, with up to 40 men on a typical day shift.

Penrith Power Station operated reliably and effectively throughout the latter half of the 1950s.

An administration block with a chemical laboratory was constructed on the northern side of the Power House in 1955.

Early in the 1960s conditions had eased sufficiently for the Electricity Commission to investigate ways of abating the smoke and dust pollution created by the rather crude ash-handling system in the station.

The solution was provided by converting the boilers to burn heavy oil instead of coal and laying of lines and equipment from two huge oil reservoirs erected on the north side of the station.

The cost of oil was, at this time prior to the 1970s, at a relatively low point and comparable with the cost of coal, making such a conversion possible as an alternative.

The coal plant remained in place to provide a back-up fuel supply.

During the 1960s, as the construction of the Electricity Commission’s large power stations at Wallerawang, Wangi, Tallawarra, Vales Point, Munmorah and in the Snowy Mountains was progressively completed, these small power stations, like Penrith, were gradually suspended.

Being relatively small units, reliable but expensive to operate, they had performed their intended function of bridging the power gap between the end of the life of

power stations built in the 1920s and 1930s and the completion of the large, high output stations of the 1950s.

This gap was largely created by the absence of major investment during World War II and exacerbated by the rapid economic expansion in the immediate post war years.

The small power stations were not at all innovative and the technology they employed was rather ordinary.

Penrith Power Station ceased generating in 1970, having performed its role without major problems, breakdowns or interruptions.

The local area it supported became another element in the state supply system and the nature of the station changed to that of a switching yard and substation in the state network.

The machinery and fittings of the station were dismantled and removed in 1974, ending a major era.

But a new one was to begin soon after.

In 1986, the Museum of Fire relocated from a site in Circular Quay to the Penrith Power Station building and is still in operation today.

he Penrith Panthers have set a new all-time membership record with more than 17,000 committed fans signing on already this season.

But the club isn’t stopping there with an even bigger target already in sight.

The Panthers are laying down the FIVE 4 TWENTY challenge to members, fans and the entire Penrith community to help the club reach 20,000 members in 2015.

As the name suggests, there are some great rewards on offer for those who assist the club to reach the historic milestone.

Any Panthers member who recruits five new members will receive 20 per cent off the cost of their membership next season.

But the ultimate, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity lays in wait for the dedicated fan who recruits the most new members.

Penrith’s coaching staff, with reports coming through on Monday evening that he’s officially been offered the head coaching job at Manly next season. It’s understood the Sea Eagles have offered Barrett a three year deal. Penrith boss Phil Gould has said previously that he would not stand in the way of Barrett leaving the club if a head coaching job was up for grabs.

in young forward Reagan CampbellGillard, offering him a new deal that will see him at the club until the end of 2019.

“It’s extremely exciting for me to commit to the Panthers for another four years,” Campbell-Gillard said. The 21-year-old local junior says he has an ambition to be a one club player.

rounds suggesting the Panthers are close to announcing the signing of Roosters forward Sam Moa for next season.

15-year-old superstar playmaker in the making, who is currently based in New Zealand. Kalani Waa will visit Penrith later this year at the club’s expense. The Panthers will put the teenager through his paces to see if he has what it takes to be a future NRL star.

» The first indication that Jamie Soward

was out of last Saturday’s game against Melbourne came from Greg Alexander 48 hours before kick-off. ‘Brandy’ said on Fox Sports that he thought Soward was out, despite everyone else saying he’d play. The confusion came because Soward was in fact right to play, but given the Panthers have a bye this weekend, everyone involved thought it was better to give Soward’s injured shoulder a little more time.

Soward made his debut as a panellist on ‘The Back Page’ last week and did a fantastic job, while he’s absolutely killing it on Triple M’s NRL coverage. Soward has truly been one of the great rugby league transformation stories and slowly, is winning the support of the rugby league community.

tract renewed by the Panthers. Manu has had a mixed season and is keen to stay in the NRL, but I’m told it won’t be at Penrith. There’s rumours doing the rounds that Manu has had interest from at least one Sydney club. The former Melbourne forward is coming to the end of a three year deal with the Panthers.

On the brink of disaster A season with so much promise is being torn apart by injury and Ivan Cleary faces a huge task to turn things around in the second half of the year

enrith’s season is on the brink of disaster with three huge games coming up that could determine the fate of the side’s 2015 campaign.

The Panthers have slipped out of the top eight after an embarrassing 20-0 loss to Melbourne last weekend and face the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium, Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval and Souths at Pepper Stadium in the weeks after this weekend’s bye.

With superstar fullback Matt Moylan on the sidelines until at least round 20 and Ivan Cleary finding it impossible to field a consistent halves combination due to injuries, the Panthers’ 2015 premiership hopes are almost in tatters.

Against Melbourne last week, the Panthers completed just 18 of their 36 sets, made 17 errors and missed 23 tackles.

How Melbourne didn’t score 50 points is anyone’s guess.

“It didn’t surprise me really. It was probably going to happen at some point against a good side that was very motivated,” coach Ivan Cleary said after the game.

“It was a totally disjointed effort.”

Ivan Cleary and Peter Wallace speak to the media In some good news for the Panthers, the side is likely to welcome back Jamie Soward and Josh Mansour from injury against the Bulldogs next weekend.

But Brent Kite is still at least a month away from returning while Jamal Idris is unlikely to return this season unless the Panthers make the finals.

The next three games are a huge test for Penrith and are likely to determine the fate of their season.

“We’ve just got to look forward to the second half of the year and reboot our season and hopefully get a little bit more continuity than what we’ve had so far,” Cleary said.

“It was a stupid brain snap” Panthers utility Tyrone Peachey has spoken about his regret over ‘that tackle’ on Brisbane forward Adam Blair at Suncorp Stadium...

enrith Panthers utility Tyrone Peachey has labelled his shocking lifting tackle on Brisbane’s Adam Blair a “brain snap”.

Speaking for the first time about the incident, Peachey said he fully regrets the tackle that could very well have seen him become the first player sent off since season 2013.

“It was just a stupid brain snap and I regret doing it,” Peachey told Extra Time.

“I went and apologised to him (Adam Blair) after the game and he was pretty cool with it.

“I’ve done nothing like that before, I was never put on report growing up and that was the first time I’ve ever been suspended in my life.

“It was just a massive brain snap and it won’t happen again.”

Peachey was charged with a Grade 2 Dangerous Throw and was suspended for two games.

Many fans and league experts called the tackle one of the worst they had seen in years and thought the 23-year-old got off rather lightly.

“They showed it compared to Greg Bird’s lifting tackle (Bird was suspended for eight matches) but he had a way worse record than what I did. I’m pretty clean,” Peachey said.

“Everyone said I got lucky but I was pretty happy with the two weeks and I won’t be doing that again.”

Before Peachey made his return during Penrith’s 20-0 loss to the Melbourne Storm last Saturday night, he admitted his short stint away from the game brought back memories of when he was injured last season.

“Yeah it was a little reminder of last year when I hurt my pec and how much I missed out on playing,” he said.

“I was getting hammered by Ronnie Palmer and doing a lot of fitness these last two weeks.”

With Peachey back on the field, he hopes to regain some of the form that saw him become one of the NRL’s most exciting players last season.

“I’ve been trying all year to play like that again, I guess last year no one expected me to do any of that stuff and now teams are doing their homework on me and it’s a lot harder,” Peachey said.

“I’m trying each week to get better and better.”

NSW with their backs to the wall after losing game one at home and now a must win game at the famous MCG. They get back their captain Paul Gallen who played his first game in two months for the Sharks over the weekend.

Brett Morris also returns to the side from a hamstring injury and also after just one club game.

This could go either way for the Blues.

The argument for is they are true Origin players who bring much needed experience and toughness to the side.

Brett Morris, of course, adds speed and try scoring power to the wing.

Not to mention plenty of toughness in defence as we saw last year when he entered Origin folklore by stopping a try with a broken shoulder.

The argument against, of course, is they haven’t played enough footy and will struggle under the incredible fatigue that is Origin. Time will tell but Laurie Daley obviously believes in the argument for!

I

For me the question is not about talent or toughness but as always in these battles it’s about what goes on between the ears.

I am again with the Blues in camp at Coffs Harbour, and I can tell you there is more work going on in the players’ heads than on the training paddock.

The boys again will do sessions with life coach Garie Dooley, who was invited back this year after his success last year.

The big challenge for him will be to get the players to believe they can overcome Queensland’s brilliance at being able to close out a game.

Few would argue that NSW in game one looked the better side for the most part but, in the crucial final section, they just couldn’t come up with the right play to win, while Queensland did.

No doubt the Blues will turn to the absence of Cooper Cronk for Queensland as a reason to believe they have the edge, after all that was the difference last year.

As always though Origin is a beast like no other and with a full MCG, it will be must watch sporting drama.

PANTHERS BUILD FOR THE FUTURE hile the on-field performance of the Panthers NRL side gets most of the media attention, behind the scenes, the club is constantly building for the future. There has been some great news this week with local junior Reagan Campbell-Gillard extending his contract until the end of 2019.

He’s been a shining light for Penrith this year and despite being only 21-years-old, he’s already played for the NSW City Origin side and made his international debut for Fiji.

Along with Bryce Cartwright, Reagan is an outstanding role model for any local youngsters who dream of forging a career in the NRL. But don’t forget the Panthers have also this week done deals with a quartet of young guns in Sione Katoa, Viliame Kikau, Zach Dockar-Clay and Ben Garcia.

You might not know them now but if they fulfil their potential, these guys could be household names within a couple of years.

However recruiting the right players to Penrith isn’t just about looking into the future – you can already see it starting to pay dividends right now.

PANTHERS ENTER BYE WEEKEND THREE POINTS CLEAR AT THE TOP OF THE HOLDEN CUP TABLE The Penrith Panthers are now sole leaders of the Holden Cup competition following a 36-16 thrashing of the Melbourne Storm at Pepper Stadium last Saturday night.

After recording their eighth straight win, the Panthers (22 points) now sit three competition points clear of their nearest rivals North Queensland and Brisbane (19 points) who are tied for second place.

Despite Penrith’s excellent starts since their streak began in early April, it was the Storm who opened the scoring first through Chanel Seigafo in the 13th minute.

The Panthers were quick to respond, however, with half Soni Luke putting on a great individual display to find the line.

With Penrith up 6-4, it was the Storm’s turn to hit right back through their captain Junior Kirisome, who scored in the corner.

Penrith came away from a rain-soaked Port Macquarie Regional Stadium battered and bruised but kept Wentworthville scoreless in recording a 16-0 win last Saturday night.

With results going their way, the win sees Penrith move into outright first for the first time in 2015 despite having to defend the majority of the second half with just one interchange player after Kieran Moss (ankle), Nathan Smith (bicep) and Matt Eisenhuth (concussion) succumbed to injury.

Moss’ serious ankle injury in particular is a cruel blow, given he had only recently returned from a serious foot injury and, if surgery is required, will once again rule the fullback out for an extended period.

Late changes were made to the named line-up with Holden Cup squad members Maliko Filino and Stanton Albert, both making their NSW Cup debuts in place of Tom Eisenhuth and Sam Anderson.

Centre Geoff Daniela, signed from the Illawarra Cutters during the week, was also a late call-up into a side that is short on outside backs, after Nu’u Akeripa retired for personal reasons.

Penrith have named a reshuffled side to accommodate for the loss of Kieran Moss, which sees Andy Saunders return to the side on the interchange bench, while Nathan Smith has been named despite potentially suffering a relapse of a bicep injury that saw him miss the first half of the season.

very now and again a story will pop up on social media or television, asking ‘is chivalry dead?’.

Generally when we think of chivalry, we think of men opening doors for women and other acts of polite behaviour towards the opposite sex.

Although as a woman I appreciate if a man holds open a door for me, I don’t have an expectation that it should happen.

On the other hand, I think common courtesies should transcend gender: that is, if I have an opportunity to do something to show courtesy or give assistance to anyone, male or female, I should.

It is interesting how not everyone thinks this way!

A few years ago I was moving some heavy items from one location to another. Someone I knew walked alongside me as I did this, chatting away to me with coffee in hand.

At the time I thought that maybe he was just a little distracted and didn’t think to ask if I needed assistance.

But that incident has stuck with me as an example of how as a society we seem

to have lost common courtesies as a normal part of our interactions.

Sadly this has translated into business as well.

I often see friends remarking on social media about their complete surprise at having dealt with someone at a large company who was helpful and gave them the answers they needed.

In contrast, most of us seem to be met with people whose only goal is to ‘tick the boxes’ and get to the next customer.

Customer service is increasingly being viewed as a lost art and in some industries, we almost expect to receive poor customer service, such is our past experience.

For those of us in small business, practicing common courtesy can give us a huge advantage.

We all appreciate when someone goes the extra mile or even simply provides ‘service with a smile’.

So think about ways that you can show your customers you care.

They will in turn become your biggest advocates and will spread the word about what a pleasure it is to deal with you.

D

uring the 1960s English pop rock band Manfred Mann had a string of hits including their most popular tracks ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, ‘Mighty Quinn’ and ‘Pretty Flamingo’. It was this early period that founding member Mike Hugg still looks back on as some of his fondest memories with the band.

“That was pretty mind blowing at the time. I think that was the highlight really – when ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’ became a big hit everywhere, first in the UK and then in America and then just about everywhere else,” he said.

The track earned them a number one on

the American charts and launched them globally as members of the British pop invasion.

Along with these hit tracks Manfred Mann also recorded songs that were originally written by Bob Dylan including ‘Just Like a Woman’, ‘Mighty Quinn’ and ‘If You Gotta Go, Go Now’.

“It was his manager who sent us some demos that Dylan had done that he hadn’t released at the time,” Mike said of the tracks.

“When we got his material we seemed to be able to interpret it in a different way but a very commercial way.

“It worked very well for us and Dylan as well was very complimentary about our versions of his stuff. So it was good for both of us really.”

During this period the band had a change of lead vocalist with Paul Jones leaving Manfred Mann and being

replaced by Mike D’Abo who led the band through several more hits before they disbanded.

In 1991 former members including Paul Jones, Mike Hugg, Mike D’Abo and Tom McGuinness decided to reform the band as ‘The Manfreds’ along with Marcus Cliffe, Rob Townsend and Simon Currie.

“It was Tom McGuinness our guitarist, his 50th birthday,” Mike said of their reunion.

“We did a concert where he invited everyone he’d ever played with to come along. Most of the Manfred Mann band turned up and it was such a good gig that we decided at that point to do some more and we carried on from there.”

The current lineup will be appearing at the Evan Theatre on Thursday, July 16 as part of their 50th Anniversary tour, giving audiences young and old the chance to experience all their hits including ‘Sha La

La’, ‘Just Like a Woman’ and ‘If You Gotta Go, Go Now’.

Mike has noticed that the audiences who come to see The Manfreds are not just those who saw them during the Manfred Mann days in the 60s.

“A lot of people that come used to come and see us in the early days but also because of the radio stations that play 60s and 70s music we get some new people as well who weren’t there the first time round,” he said.

“There’s always been a big interest in the music from the 60s, because it was such a big turning point with The Beatles and I think most people have some interest in it, obviously some more than others.”

ou might not immediately recognise the name Dewayne Everettsmith but you have probably heard his track ‘It’s Like Love’ which featured in a visually stunning Tourism Australia campaign in 2012.

Dewayne said the response to the song has been quite incredible.

“It’s indescribable,” he said.

“It’s a phenomenal feeling to have that sort of appreciation for your work.”

The talented young singer/songwriter will be bringing this track, along with others from his album ‘Surrender’, to the Joan stage this June as part of his Beyond Surrender tour.

The album was released last year and draws heavily on Dewayne’s life from the age of 16 to 21.

For him, it’s a very personal and private album.

“It’s definitely about personal experiences and personal journeys and all those kind of things,” he said.

“It was just about writing those things down and getting them out there and it kind of releases me of those burdens by having them in the song and releasing it on an album.”

The tour will also feature a new take on some of Dewayne’s older tracks.

“With this tour we worked some of the older songs from the ‘Surrender’ album just to give them a different light and a different kind of perspective,” he said.

Joining him on tour will be soul/blues/ hiphop and electronica duo Sietta. With Sietta Dewayne has found more than just a fun touring partnership.

“They’ve really got some really nice, special ideas which I’ve been taking on board and learning a few things,” he said.

“That process has been a phenomenal thing to do and be a part of.”

EVERY STEP COUNTS With the clock now ticking, training is well underway for Penrith RSL Club’s young Kokoda trekkers. With no more than 100 days until these young leaders step foot on the Kokoda Trail, nothing but hard work is required from now on. Needing as much assistance as possible, World Gym Penrith have granted all six trekkers with memberships to give them all the tools they need to reach their peak fitness in time for the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge.

Mayonnaise or Mayo as most of us know it, is a very versatile thing to have in any kitchen. It can be used to blind salads such as potato salad or coleslaw, as well as being a base for my side sauces. You can make Mayo from scratch, or buy a good whole egg one. The sauces below are all based on starting with one cup of Mayo: • 1 tsp Garlic, 1 tbl spoon Paprika= Paprika aioli (great as a burger sauce) • 5ml Tabasco, 5ml Worces-

Ingredients • 1 large egg yolk • 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar • 1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1/2 teaspoon salt plus more to taste • 3/4 cup canola oil, divided

Soundproofed

Preparation Combine egg yolk, lemon juice, vinegar, mustard, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in medium bowl. Whisk until blended and bright yellow, about 30 seconds.

WHAT’S AT

Using 1/4 teaspoon measure and whisking constantly, add 1/4 cup oil to yolk mixture, a few drops at a time, about four minutes.

Gradually add remaining 1/2 cup oil in very slow thin stream, whisking constantly, until mayonnaise is thick, about eight minutes (mayonnaise will be lighter in colour). Cover and chill. Can be made up to two days ahead. Keep chilled.

DVD The Theory of Everything Rated PG // KATE REID

‘The Theory of Everything’ is based on the true story of English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who was diagnosed with ALS, a form of Motor Neurone disease, at the age of 21. The central focus of the film is on Hawking’s physical decline and his personal life, in particular his relationship with his first wife Jane, with whom he had three children.

English actor Eddy Redmayne is engaging in the role of Hawking, beautifully portraying the intelligence and humour behind one of the world’s most well known scientific minds. The physicality of his performance is even more impressive, with Redmayne perfectly embodying Hawking’s decline, from the first initial signs of the disease to his

progression to almost total paralysis and the loss of his voice after a bout of pneumonia.

The film was nominated for five Oscars, which included a Best Actor win for Redmayne’s performance and a Best Actress nomination for Felicity Jones, who brings emotional depth to the role of the devoted wife Jane.

Those hoping to explore Hawking’s work in the field of physics may be a little disappointed, but what the film lacks in science it more than makes up for in heart.

Eddie Redmayne steals the show in this story of strength and perseverance.

Rated MA // KATE REID To cut straight to the chase ‘Birdman’ is an absolutely brilliant film.

The story is based around former ‘Birdman’ action star Riggan Thomson, played

by Michael Keaton, who is trying to keep himself relevant in the acting world by putting on a Broadway play based on a short story by Raymond Carver.

The film explores the idea of celebrity and the difference between earning respect for good work and gaining attention through blockbuster films.

The performances are brilliant across the board, with a star studded cast including Zach Galifinakis, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts.

I don’t bother with all the other chicken varieties because I believe you can’t go past Red Rooster for the best and freshest chicken in town.

I’m such a fan of Red Rooster that I once complained to head office when they removed the delicious Flavour wrap from their menu. Fortunately they brought it back quick smart and I’ve been a devotee again ever since!

This week I visited the newly renovated

Red Rooster in Jamisontown and, boy, was I blown away. I’ve been a customer of this store for well over a decade now, so I was very pleased that they decided to give it a much needed spruce up.

The renovations feature a dining room extension – which now has the capacity to seat 40 diners – new toilets, disabled access and brand new digital menu boards.

The best thing about the updated store is that the food also tastes even better!

Their roast chicken, cheesy nuggets and famous chips are the absolute bomb

and I can’t help but always squeeze in a yummy pineapple fritter after each meal.

The other day I sampled Red Rooster’s delicious new Sumo Salad sides and, I must admit, I felt healthier with every bite.

This Saturday, June 13, Red Rooster Jamisontown will celebrate their new digs with a grand opening family fun day. There will be loads of entertainment and great food on offer.

When?

Put it in your calendar: June 30 marks the end of FY15. You have until October

31 to lodge your tax return, but we strongly recommend getting in early to avoid the risk of incurring late fees. If you use an official tax agent (and are registered as a client prior to the closing date), you may be able to file later than this deadline without being penalised.

Where?

The easiest and most efficient way of lodging your tax is to do so digitally. While snail mail is still viable, the ATO can take up to 50 days to issue refunds. Online tax returns, in contrast, are typically finalised within 12 working days.

What… should I remember?

Before the tax year draws to a close, consider making a donation to an approved charity. Not only will you be helping those in need, your contributions also come with notable tax benefits. Any gift (that you didn’t derive some personal benefit from) over the value of $2 is eligible to be deducted.

You can also claim workrelated clothing expenses, such as the purchase and maintenance of protective garments, uniforms and occupation-specific attire.

These items must reflect the style and structure of clothes typically worn in your industry, or bear the branding of your company.

Dining out is a fun way to combine delicious food and socialising, but if you’re eating outside the home a little too frequently it can be easy to overindulge.

It doesn’t have to be this way though.

With a little knowledge you can make sure your love of dining out won’t keep you from maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

To keep from overindulging slow your eating down, chat to your dining partner(s) and give your body time to recognise that you’re full.

If the restaurant meals are too large consider ordering an entrée or half size meal or sharing with a friend.

A balanced meal is around

Swap creamy sauces and condiments for meals that have tomato or vegetable based sauces or are seasoned with herbs and spices.

Skip the fries or share with a friend, and when given the option choose wholegrain or wholemeal breads and pastas.

If you’re not sure how something is prepared don’t be afraid to ask.

Menus often won’t give you all the information you need to make an informed dining choice.

At the end of the day eating out should be enjoyable and guilt free.

Making a few smart choices, while not getting too restrictive, is the best way to maintain a healthy relationship with food.

hard to get up the steps but the willpower to stick to the decision and go right outside their comfort zone. It makes people feel very vulnerable.

The trainer might be quite fit and healthy themselves, so people think trainers must be looking at their new client and judging them.

It’s funny but somewhere it’s assumed everybody knows how to keep fit and anyone who doesn’t is just

lazy. We all own a body so must know how to look after it. This isn’t true.

I train people to become trainers and I know how much is involved in making someone good at it. To assume everybody should just know how to do it is ridiculous. I can say from experience, having completed my trade straight after I left school, a carpenter learns a lot before he earns his papers, but then they can take an old house and turn it into something much better.

A trainer is in the trade of getting people fit. The ‘product’ they make is fit, healthy people. Any trainer worth more than $1.50 an hour knows how people feel when coming in the first time. They are professionals, assessing where a new client is and where they want to be and then designing a way to get them there, they’re not thinking ‘you’re fat and I’m not’. They have chosen to follow a career path that revolves around helping others improve their results too.

It is a service industry. Skill level as a trainer is judged by what they can do for a client.

It’s entirely normal to feel a little trepidation starting out, but give it a while and see if that doesn’t turn into excitement as you start feeling and seeing all the great results from your efforts.

Biggest health/fitness misconception?

Low fat diets. Good fats are good for you. Since the introduction of low fat diets, heart disease has increased. Fats add flavour and many food manufactures substitute this with sugar and salt to enhance the flavour. Sugar is the biggest killer in our society. Everything we eat has some form of sugar or converts to sugar once our bodies process it. Some studies have shown sugar helps grow cancers and in general it’s a good explanation of why our modern society are getting more obese with more food related diseases than ever before. Our ancestors had a simple diet of natural foods and fats, so try and make an effort to eat as many natural foods as possible.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most.

I love anything outdoor. I find using my environment helps me to naturally move and build strength and mobility. During the colder parts of the year a CrossFit circuit is also good, it gets my heart rate going without stopping for anybody. Mud obstacle events would be my favourite activity outside of training, it challenges you physically and mentally to do things you would have never dreamed of doing.

How does fitness feature in your life?

At the age of 40 I decided to do something for myself, I thought I was fit because I wasn’t overweight but realised some changes needed to be done. Just simply walking up stairs I could hear my body searching for air. I was working in a stressful environment with many challenges everyday and I had a young family that wanted to play.

I never played sport or did any sporting activity in my life and it was a challenge just to do a warm up. Over the course of the next three years, I started my day with the determination to succeed and to be fit enough to enjoy my family and life.

Fast forward four years, I have now competed in three half marathons, one full marathon and eight obstacle mud run events. In July I will be taking on my

alerio Ricetti came to Australia from Italy in 1914 after an uncle sensing impending war, loaned the 16-yearold apprentice stonemason the money for a ship’s passage to safety.

Landing at Port Pirie, Valerio soon moved to Broken Hill, got well-paying work in the mines, boarded with a local Italian family, and fell in love with a pub barmaid.

When she wouldn’t marry him, a broken-hearted Valerio left Broken Hill for Adelaide, and a first and unfortunate experience of a brothel… leaving his wallet there containing a year’s savings, he returned to retrieve it but the establishment’s pimp refused to let him in.

An angry Valerio hurled a rock through the window, was arrested and gaoled for five days.

Virtually penniless, he moved to Melbourne and decided to pawn his last possession – a treasured Italian leather coat. Apparently appearing confused outside the pawnshop, a stranger offered to help him hock the coat for the bestpossible price, and a gullible Valerio handed it over… never seeing stranger nor coat again.

He drifted north, becoming disillusioned with his fellow man as he acquired only ad hoc work while following along riverbanks and railway lines until arriving on a hill overlooking Griffith on a wet night in January 1929.

He took refuge in a cave on the hill, waking next morning to look down over the lush Riverina Irrigation Area – and

closer, a garbage dump. He scrambled down to this and found a proverbial treasure trove for a one-time miner and stonemason – broken shovels, mattocks and axe heads, and tree branches for making handles.

Valerio returned to his cave, convinced he had “found my Garden of Eden.” He built a dry-stone wall across the mouth of his cave as protection from the weather, a sleeping nook, fireplace for cooking, stone stairways, even a “chapel,” and painted Christian symbols using thrownaway paints.

Slowly he hauled-up tonnes of soil in buckets to make gardens retained by more dry-stone walls and planted vegetable seeds, cuttings, even banana palms reclaimed from the dump; soon Griffith residents dubbed him “The Hermit,” for whenever they approached he would flee into secreted bolt-holes.

Then in 1937 two local Italian migrants hearing that The Hermit was an Italian, went to the hill calling out in Italian. This time Valerio responded… and bizarrely found himself face-to-face with Valentino Ceccato – with whom he had boarded in Broken Hill over 20 years before.

Visitors today can marvel at his remarkable cave complex and one-time gardens that underwent minor restoration in 2008 and will undergo more work when funds can be found. This helps us understand, how in His time, and, in His wisdom, God will give you the good things you need. Just as a loving parent wouldn’t give their young child the keys to the family

car, so too does God not give us everything we ask for.

God’s answer to our heartfelt prayers can be “yes”; “no” and “not yet”.

This calls for patient humility, recognising that God, who knows the big picture, may have an answer beyond our understanding.

Yet, whatever the answer, Jesus’ words are still 100 per cent true; “For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

God is not like a slot machine, in which we keep putting coins to hopefully, one day, get the right answer!

Prayer is a humble, growing trust in our good God, who always keeps his promises to those who ask him.

oyota’s HiLux was Australia’s bestselling vehicle in May as the rugged workhorse marked a significant milestone by passing 850,000 sales.

Corolla also maintained its overall lead as Australia’s best-selling car in 2015 and now has a margin of almost 1300 sales over its closest rival.

Continued popularity of HiLux and Corolla – the country’s most popular ute and passenger car – lifted Toyota to a total of more than 15,900 sales last month.

The market leader’s May tally was 82.7 per cent higher than any other brand and lifted Toyota to a 2015 total of more than 80,000 sales – a lead of more than 35,000 vehicles over its nearest competitor.

Toyota’s May total included 3173 HiLux single, extra and double cabs – almost 300 sales ahead of any other vehicle in the market.

It is the 14th time HiLux has topped the monthly sales charts, and it remains the only vehicle of its type to have achieved that distinction.

Early in the month, Toyota registered its 850,000th Australian HiLux customer since the nameplate was born in 1968.

The grand total now includes more than 478,800 HiLux 4x4 variants and 373,500 in 4x2 guise.

“HiLux has been a long-time favourite in Australia,” Toyota Director of Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb said.

hey’ve only been in the building a matter of months but already the Sydney Bears Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) team have built a passionate supporter base in Penrith.

More than 350 fans visited the Penrith Ice Palace last Sunday to see the Bears defeat the Melbourne Mustangs 7-6, in what was one of the highest scoring AIHL games in history.

However, despite the good turnout, Sydney Bears Vice President Matthew Burrell wants more locals at games.

“We’re six home games into the season and it’s slowly getting better each week,” he said.

“We knew it would be tough heading back out to Penrith and attracting a crowd (previous home was Baulkham Hills), but it’s already been better than our previous stint there a number of years ago.

“There’s a lot more fans into ice hockey now, so it’s just about getting them to attend on a consistent basis.”

Contributing to the decent crowd figure last week was the fact a number of professional Canadian ice hockey players were also attendance.

Brent Burns, Garnet Exelby and Keith Primeau were in town for the recent Team

Canada vs Team USA exhibition match, and popped by the Penrith Ice Palace to check out the local talent skating around.

“Having those NHL players there certainly bumped our crowd figure up a bit,” Burrell admitted.

“The NHL guys couldn’t believe how high the standard was, they weren’t expecting it.”

The Bears are currently enjoying a moderate season to date, sitting in sixth position with five wins and six losses to their name.

Having won four of their last five games, Burrell said things are starting to come together for the Bears and a positive end to the season is in sight.

“We’re heading in the right direction with consecutive wins on the board plus we’re scoring lots of goals now too,” he said.

“We’ve found it hard of late to climb up the ladder because some of the teams we’re trying to pass are also on their own winning streaks.

“The good thing is we play those teams in the next few weeks, so it’s a real chance to leap frog them and get into the playoffs.”

The Sydney Bears will play their next home game at the Penrith Ice Palace this Sunday at 5pm against the competition leading Perth Thunder.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and $10 for kids.

he Penrith Cricket Club are hoping to find the next Pat Cummins or Josh Lalor with the launch of their very own Elite Training Academy.

The Elite Training Academy was established to identify and nurture the outstanding cricketing talent that Penrith has to offer.

Penrith will join only a handful of other Sydney Grade Cricket clubs to have their own Elite Training Academy, which focuses on specialised training programs to ensure that local talent has a clear pathway to higher forms at grade level and possibly state and Australian level.

Penrith Cricket Club Manager and former first grade player, Warren Buttigieg, said the club has hand-picked the best local junior cricketers to take part.

“This is the first year of the Academy.

We’ll have three groups – U14s, U16s and U19s,” he said.

“The players will undertake a 10 week program where they’ll be trained, upskilled and shown a pathway to Grade cricket and beyond.”

Each age group will comprise of around 20 players with the U14 and U16 age groups featuring players from a host of local junior clubs.

am Siaki moved away from his family in New Zealand to pursue his dream of playing rugby in Australia.

The 23-year-old factory worker ended up at the Penrith Emus and it hasn’t been the smoothest of rides.

While Siaki is very grateful for the opportunity, his Emus are currently winless after 11 rounds and struggling most weeks to even put points on the board.

But despite the obvious challenges on the field, Siaki is enjoying every moment of his life as an Emu. “I’ve been playing rugby since I was 11-years-old. I came to Penrith to play some footy and get a taste of the Shute Shield… and man, it’s alright eh,” Siaki said.

Siaki is keen to continue building his career at the Emus and says the Shute Shield is a great competition.

“When I first came to Australia from New Zealand, I started playing rugby in the country and I thought I’d give the Sydney competition a go,” he said.

“I’m loving the Shute Shield, it’s the competition you want to be playing in.”

Siaki’s words would be music to Penrith coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu’s ears, especially considering he’s lost a huge chunk of players over the years who have fallen out of love with the Emus.

“It’s a privilege to play for the Emus,” Siaki said.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about the club and I believe if this group can stick together for the next two years, we’ll be one of the teams to beat in the competition.”

Right now the Emus look a better chance of winning the lottery than a game in the final seven rounds, but the Penrith hooker hasn’t given up hope of singing the team’s victory song.

“We believe in each other and if we show that at training then hopefully we’ll come out with a victory shortly,” Siaki said.

Siaki praised coach Tu’ipulotu, who he said remains confident and upbeat despite Penrith’s position on the ladder in the Shute Shield.

“Coach always tells us to keep our heads up, be composed,” he said.

“The time he has given up for us is marvellous, we want to make him proud.”

The Penrith Emus return to Nepean Rugby Park this Saturday at 3pm to take on the West Harbour Pirates.

Penrith enjoys successful tournament Missed it by that much: Over 40’s team finishes second at Netball NSW State Championships HENRY HINDE

t the 2015 Netball NSW State Championships, contested at Illawarra District Netball Association over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend, Penrith District Netball Association has finished runners-up in the Over 40’s category.

Penrith’s Over 40’s side finished second behind undefeated champions Manly Warringah, finishing with eight wins from the round robin-style competition.

Penrith also fielded four other teams – their Over 45’s side finished in third place, their Over 35’s team in ninth, 17 and Under Championship 16th while their Open Championship team finished 17th at the conclusion of the tournament.

Just over 1200 matches were played and more than 40,000 goals scored from Saturday, June 6 to Monday, June 8, with bright blue skies greeting thousands of visitors from all corners of the state.

While addressing the crowd gathered for the closing presentations, Netball NSW President Wendy Archer took time to congratulate not just the State Champions, but every player, coach, umpire and official who helped make this year’s

“We were blessed with some terrific weather this weekend, and the standard of netball was right up there to match it,” she said.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League team will look to breathe some life into their horrible season this weekend when they take on the lowly Sutherland Sharks.

The Panthers and the rest of the competition enjoyed a well deserved break for the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend and are ready to fire in these final rounds of the season.

Tip off between the last-placed Panthers and seventh-placed Sharks is at 7pm this Saturday, June 13 at Sutherland Basketball Stadium.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers women’s Waratah Championship League side will look to get their season back on track this weekend when they meet the Sutherland Sharks.

Penrith were enjoying a great season up until the last month where they’ve lost a handful of games, and are now battling to stay in playoff contention.

Tip off between the fifth-placed Panthers and third-placed Sharks is at 5pm this Saturday, June 13 at Sutherland Basketball Stadium.

BASKETBALL: Penrith Basketball Association are running school holiday basketball workshops in the first week of July.

The camps are appropriate for kids aged between six and 13, beginner to experienced club level players. Kids will work on all skills from dribbling

and shooting to defence and game concepts in a fun and safe environment.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms Division 1 team enjoyed a well deserved rest last weekend and are now ready to hit the ice this Sunday evening.

The fifth-placed Phantoms will take on the competition leading Canterbury Bucs at the Canterbury Ice Rink this Sunday, June 14 at 7pm.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have continued their losing ways, going down to the Western Suburbs Magpies 61-51 in the latest round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Ben McGovern and Samuel Laffan were best for the Rams with two goals each.

This Saturday, June 13, the sixth-placed Rams will battle the seventh-placed Randwick City Saints at Greygums Oval from 2.30pm.

AFL: The Penrith Ramettes women’s AFL team have been hammered by the Blacktown Magic 63-34.

The fifth-placed Ramettes will play the competition leading UTS Shamrocks at 10.30am this Saturday at Greygums Oval.

fter 10 rounds of the competition, the Greater Western Sydney Giants are officially enjoying their best AFL season to date.

The Giants were in seventh heaven last Sunday afternoon, recording their seventh win of the year – one victory more than their previous record of six in season 2014.

GWS’ milestone win came during a scrappy affair against a depleted Brisbane Lions outfit in front of just over 9000 fans at Spotless Stadium.

After an excellent final quarter, which saw the Giants kick four straight goals, they managed to get on top of their opponents 97-67.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said although it wasn’t the prettiest of wins, he was pleased with his side’s response following last week’s big defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

“Our actual ability to have that sort of scrap and fight, and win contested ball, when things aren’t going your way… that was the pleasing part of the game,” he said.

“It was an up and down game, but to come away with a five-goal win, from where we sit is fantastic.”

The visitors got within 21 points early in the final term, but gave up four straight goals to the Giants, who ended up putting the final nail in the coffin.

Jeremy Cameron kicked three goals for the Giants, with fellow forwards Cam McCarthy and James Stewart and midfielder Stephen Conigilo each booting a pair.

Brisbane held a four point lead at the end of the first quarter before the Giants took control with six goals to two in the second quarter.
