In a significant sign that the Opposition believes it has a big chance of winning Lindsay at the July 2 election, Bill Shorten this week confirmed the party will officially launch its campaign in Penrith.

The launch on June 19 will attract national interest and will be a huge boost to the campaign of local candidate Emma Husar.

It’s the first time in recent memory that Labor has brought its launch to western Sydney.

Malcolm reignites Lindsay love affair Turnbull take two: Prime Minister makes education announcement and mixes with local shoppers DALE DRINKWATER

is first visit to Lindsay during the election campaign ended with unwanted national headlines, but Malcolm Turnbull’s return appearance on Monday went a lot smoother.

After being accused of cancelling a shopping centre walkthrough on his first visit last month, the Prime Minister happily mixed with shoppers at Westfield Penrith on Monday afternoon, even if the mood was a little tense.

His primary purpose for being in Lindsay was to announce the extension of a pilot program to boost education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Visiting McCarthy Catholic College in Emu Plains, Mr Turnbull promised to invest $4.6 million for 12 schools to pilot the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program if re-elected.

“In order to succeed in the 21st century, we need to ensure that Australians are more innovative and more technologically sophisticated,” he said.

Mr Turnbull said 75 per cent of Australia’s fastest growing industries require STEM

skills, but the performance of students in maths, science and reading has declined.

From January 2017, McCarthy students in the program will be on a pathway to a STEM related diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree.

McCarthy will be partnered with leading Sydney accounting firm PwC, combining school education with practical education.

“PwC will provide one-on-one mentoring here at the school and take the kids to PwC so that they can see the relevance of the work they are studying,” Mr Turnbull said.

PwC National Skills Leader Sara Caplan is confident the program will be successful in western Sydney, as it’s locally driven, hands-on and collaborative.

Education Minister, Senator Simon Birmingham, said the P-TECH program will foster a culture of change in schools.

“We are helping schools to partner with employers who have roles to offer in some of the fastest growing job opportunities in the world and in the Australian economy,” he said.

He said the two current pilots in Geelong and Ballarat have been highly successful, and the extension of the pilot will ensure it can be rolled out to schools across the country in due course.

System’s failure is the real culprit It seems obvious that the Sydney Siege inquest will ultimately find that the actions of police on that fateful day back in 2014 could have been better.

There is likely to be significant criticism of the police response once the inquest has concluded and it is something the Force will surely learn from.

However, we should never forget that it was the so-called justice system that allowed Man Monis to be on the streets that day, despite plenty of warnings that he was a ticking time bomb.

Monis was bailed on several occasions for 43 charges of sexual assault, and being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

His erratic and bizarre behaviour goes well beyond that, from hate mail campaigns to seeking Government information on the legality of communicating with ISIS. Man Monis should never have been able to walk into the Lindt Cafe that day, but our legal system allowed him to do it.

And while armchair experts will criticise the police and wonder why a movielike sniper shot wasn’t taken to wipe him out, they seem unwilling to dig deeper and discover the reason he was on the streets in the first place.

I’m still yet to see this issue truly addressed to a point that we can all feel comfortable that a similar deranged mad man would not be given the same freedom that Man Monis was.

television I’ve ever watched. And that’s saying something given I’ve seen Don Burke’s documentary on different ways to improve the growth of your grass.

It was at times frustrating, with neither leader (but particularly Mr Turnbull) willing to directly answer the questions put to them by the panel of journalists.

It showed that both leaders lack any real connection with the community or any real evidence that they offer the visionary long-term leadership the country so desperately needs.

With about five weeks left in the campaign, the real challenge for both Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten is to find the missing spark that will create the connection the voting public is looking for.

As it stands, it would appear that voters are more disconnected than ever and this campaign is uninspiring.

And what it really comes down to is that neither leader is very likeable.

Milk campaign highlights big problem The term ‘people power’ has been evident in recent weeks with shoppers flocking to buy branded, more expensive milk instead of the Coles or Woolworths home brand milk.

From social media campaigns to impassioned pleas by both radio and television personalities, it has been inspiring to see Australia take action in support of dairy farmers.

But it’s not only dairy farmers who feel the pain of the big supermarkets.

Whether it’s fruit, vegetables, meat or other fresh produce, our farmers are doing it tough.

The milk campaign has shown that Australians really do care about our farmers, particularly when they have a true understanding of the problem.

Let’s hope the people power movement continues and we see a fight back against the dictatorship of the big supermarkets.

Nine throws Fatty under the bus Channel Nine finally did the right thing and apologised to Melbourne Storm, Australian and Queensland skipper Cameron Smith last week, but it came from the wrong place.

Instead of the apology being issued by ‘60 Minutes’, where the hatchet job on Smith took place, it was left to ‘Footy Show’ host Paul Vautin to issue the apology last Wednesday night.

If Nine legitimately decided it was time it admitted it was wrong, the apology should have come via ‘60 Minutes’, which rates significantly higher than the ‘Footy Show’. Forcing Paul Vautin into making the apology on behalf of the network was a monumental cop out.

abor took a significant upper hand in the battle for Lindsay this week when it announced that the party’s official campaign launch later this month will be held in Penrith.

It’s the first time in recent memory that Labor is taking the launch to western Sydney, with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten labelling the region “the heart of Australia”.

The launch will be held on June 19 and is likely to give Labor a significant boost in the final weeks of the campaign.

“Labor’s values speak to the values of people in western Sydney,” Mr Shorten said.

“They’re interested in good schools for their kids. They want the best in life for their kids and to give them the best start possible. They want a Medicare system where it’s your Medicare card not your credit card which determines the level of health care you get in Australia.

“Labor and western Sydney share common values. I think it’s great that on June 19th, I will be launching Labor’s campaign to be the next government of Australia in the heart of Australia, western Sydney.”

previous grants for similar services have reached $6 million.

“Over 5000 of the 25,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in western Sydney reside in the Lindsay electorate – it equates to one third of a reduction from the previous budget,” he said.

“It’s about $67 per person.”

Mr Lynch highlighted the fact that one in three Aboriginal people smoke; one in three Aboriginal people are obese; one in three Aboriginal people have high blood pressure; one in six Aboriginal people have high cholesterol; and one in eight Aboriginal people have diabetes.

He is campaigning for more funding.

Locals locked out of home ownership Greens want negative gearing reform and say first home buyers could have their dreams destroyed DALE DRINKWATER

t’s one of the hottest topics of the Federal Election, and Greens Candidate for Lindsay Kingsley Liu says it’s hitting western Sydney hard.

The Federal Government plans to make no changes to negative gearing, but the Greens call on its reform, and propose to remove negative gearing benefits on all new properties with a tougher approach to capital gains tax.

Mr Liu, a former investment banker and stockbroker, said first home buyers in Penrith are squeezed out when investors and property developers target Penrith on current tax incentives.

“You are a loser under the current policy settings if you hope to be a first time home owner,” he said.

“You cannot compete with those who have their mortgage costs subsidised by tax payers through the negative gearing arrangements.”

Negative gearing is when an investor invests in something that loses money in the short term, in the hopes that it will make capital gains in the future.

ing a tax subsidy. Mr Liu said the big winners from negative gearing are high income earners.

“By continuing with negative gearing the Liberal Government is over-rewarding the landlord class located at the top end of three per cent income bracket,” he said.

“I advocate genuine taxation reform to unfair tax laws that lock entire generations of Australians out of home ownership and affordable, stable rentals.”

The Greens estimate removing negative gearing would increase revenue by $42.5 billion over the next decade, that Mr Liu said will be “redirected to shortfalls in Gonski education and hospitals”.

Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott labelled the Greens and Labor’s negative gearing policies as ‘reckless’, claiming it will drive down the value of homes and increase rents, and hit low income earners harder than high income earners.

“Around two thirds of those who use negative gearing for property investment, have taxable incomes of less than $80,000,” she said.

“Data shows Labor’s housing tax will see the wealthy able to continue negative gearing of existing housing stock and gain a massive tax advantage over low and middle income Australians.”

Little boy lost in river tragedy

fun day out turned to unthinkable tragedy for one Cranebrook family when four-year-old Bentley Hilton lost his life after being trapped inside a submerged vehicle in the Hawkesbury River on Sunday.

The infant was still restrained in his seat when the car slid off the edge of a boat ramp just after 11am on Sunday, May 29, on River Road, Lower Portland.

It’s understood Bentley’s grandfather had got out of the car to get their small tin boat off the back of the ute when the car began to slide.

Inspector Ian Woodward, from Windsor Local Area Command, said there was a sharp drop-off point in the river, making attempts made by the father and grandfather to rescue Bentley almost impossible.

“As the man got out to unstrap the tin boat, the ute rolled back into the Hawkesbury River and the boy was submerged,” he said.

“The grandfather made frantic efforts to try and get the boy out of the vehicle but he was unsuccessful.

“The child’s family and a number of police officers went into the water to try and recover the vehicle and the child, but they were unsuccessful in their attempts.”

The car moved with the current and was located by police divers about 20 metres away from the boat ramp at about 2.50pm, almost four hours after it went into the water.

Family members have said they are devastated by the heartbreaking loss of Bentley, a boy who still had his whole life ahead of him.

“When I found out I broke out in tears; there was just nothing else I could really say,” Bentley’s mother, Lauren Hilton, told Seven News.

“I loved him from the first time I met him.”

Bentley’s aunt, Heather Marie, wrote about her disbelief online.

“Everyone keeps telling me that you’re gone but you can’t be, none of this can be true,” she wrote.

“I love you so much Bentley, more than you could ever imagine – so blessed to be your Aunty.”

Paramedics performed CPR on Bentley when he was found but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Man hurt in ‘targeted’ home invasion at Londonderry A man has been injured during a home invasion at Londonderry on Wednesday morning that police say was most likely targeted.

About 12.30am on Wednesday, June 1, two men forced their way into a home on Reynolds Road. The men were armed with an axe and a baseball bat.

A 44-year-old male resident was

assaulted, receiving minor facial injuries.

Two other residents, a female in her early 20s and a man in his mid 40s were uninjured.

Police were contacted about the incident at 4am.

The 44-year-old man was treated on scene by Ambulance Paramedics.

He spent Wednesday morning speak-

ing to police from Penrith Local Area Command about the incident.

A crime scene was established and inquiries are continuing.

In a statement on Wednesday, Police said it was likely the incident was targeted.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

ontroversial Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish could leverage off his recent infamy in running as a conservative independent in the seat of Lindsay.

“I’m the gravel in stupidity’s shoe. I’ll slow it, stop it and I’ll make it change direction,” he told the Weekender.

“I’m not afraid to speak up for what is needed in Penrith.”

After a long history of ‘grinding gears’ in Penrith Council, Cr Cornish attracted national media attention with his claims that sitting member Fiona Scott backstabbed Tony Abbott in the leadership spill in September last year.

He has now resigned from the Liberal Party and believes he can give the people of Lindsay a choice in the July 2 election.

“The Labor and Liberal parties don’t give people a choice as they are too similar,” he said.

As part of his policies, Cr Cornish wants two more lanes in each direction on the M4 between Parramatta and Penrith; four multi-deck car parks in the Penrith CBD; and free before and after school care for working parents.

n an already fierce election campaign to win over the ‘election decider’ seat of Lindsay, Federal Liberal Member Fiona Scott has hit back at claims her party is failing to deliver one of their key goals – jobs.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) protested at Nepean Hospital on Monday, against the government’s cuts to health, schools and TAFE, and new corporate tax cuts.

ACTU President Ged Kearney said the Government’s tax cuts for multinational corporations and endorsing trade deals will cost Lindsay jobs.

“The real path to secure well paid jobs for young people starts with proper investments in early childhood education, schools, TAFE, universities, genuine traineeships and apprenticeships,” she said.

“Instead the Government is ripping funding from each of these areas while introducing a scheme that will allow big companies to replace real jobs with workers paid well below the minimum wage.”

She said $1 billion of cuts to apprenticeship support and a further $247 million from skills and training is making it even harder for young people in Lindsay who want to get ahead.

But Ms Scott defended the Turnbull Government, and said the Australian economy is growing faster than any other

“Around 300,000 new jobs were created last year, the strongest growth in employment since 2007,” she said She said that when Labor was in power between 2007 and 2013, they cut employer incentive payments for Australian Apprenticeships nine times in two years, totalling $1.2 billion.

“Labor’s cuts lead to low commencements in 2013, in turn this has drastically reduced the number of apprentices in

training every year since,” she said.

The ACTU is also worried about a freeze on Medicare co-payments they claim will increase the cost of seeing a GP or for tests, and plans to hand over health records to private companies.

Ms Scott said Labor started the Medicare freeze in 2013, and that bulk billing is higher than ever.

“Bill Shorten and Labor can’t pay for their health spending promises, and what they can’t pay for they will never deliver,” she said.

The Coalition continues to bring out the big names to back Fiona Scott’s campaign to win a second term in Lindsay.

Ms Scott and Foreign Minister Bishop toured RKR Engineering’s factory in Emu Plains with Managing Director Russell Ricketts on Wednesday, before taking a ride on the company’s Trackhaul, a vehicle that transforms from road to rail ready in minutes.

With plans to export their product, Ms Bishop said the business reflects the Turnbull Government’s focus in terms of jobs and economic growth.

“This firm has been innovating, doing research and development here and have come up with a new vehicle that will be of use in not only rail yards in Australia, but overseas,” she said.

But the conversation quickly turned to Ms Bishop’s superannuation ‘fumble’ on radio Tuesday morning, and to whether recurring visits from the Liberal Party are signs of a party in strife.

“We don’t take any seat for granted. I have visited about 25 electorates across Australia and I will continue to visit electorates every day up until the election on July 2,” she said.

Appeal fails as man is banned from driving for three months

A re-offending motorist who was given the chance to prove he could heed the road rules has had his latest RMS appeal dismissed.

Brendan Tomkins faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday in a bid to overturn his driving suspension.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said he was reluctant to give Mr Tomkins another opportunity, seeing as he had already handed him a lifeline in December.

“I’m afraid you’ll just have to pay the piper...you learn more that way,” he said.

He was banned from driving for three months.

24-year-old will be back behind the wheel earlier than expected

A 24-year-old who racked up three habitual traffic offender (HTO) declarations, preventing her from driving until 2033, has had the rulings quashed.

Cindy Maree Curtis was told to take advantage of the decision and be responsible, after her application to cancel the declarations was granted at Penrith Local Court last Thursday, “I am satisfied that disqualifying you until you are 41...does not promote rehabilitation,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said, noting Ms Curtis was still subject to a two-year suspension.

A person convicted of three or more serious driving offences in the last five years may be declared a HTO by the court or RMS and disqualified for a further five years on top of their court-ordered suspension.

Good behaviour bonds for fighting mothers

Two mothers involved in an alcohol fueled ‘catfight’ have been ordered to enter into good behaviour bonds.

Rebecca Dunn, 36, and Rachel Nicole Sait, 29, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with affray.

The court heard the pair were seen

grabbing each other’s hair and caused “enormous problems” for police when they clashed in public after consuming too much alcohol.

“Somebody rang it in because they were so scared,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn chided.

They were both placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Man sentenced to jail time on drug supply charges

Steven Desmond Dodd, 47, has been sentenced to four months jail for drug supply.

Mr Dodd appeared by audio visual link at Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with two counts of supplying a prohibited drug.

Mr Dodd’s lawyer contended his client was “merely doing a favour for a friend” when he handed drugs to an undercover police officer.

However, Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said Mr Dodd did not live in a “vacuum” and would know drugs destroy people’s lives.

“You’ve ramped things up,” she said.

“Moving from possession to supply is a great leap.”

Man kept driving despite licence being on hold

Trent Barnes, 31, has been forced to hang up his keys after pleading guilty to driving while suspended.

Penrith Local Court heard Mr Barnes was aware his licence was on hold due to unpaid fines in January, but kept driving until he was intercepted again on April 16.

Magistrate Georgia Knight told the court people who required their licence for work must be “terribly careful not to jeopardise it”, after the defendant’s lawyer stressed his need to hold one for his employment.

“You shouldn’t have been driving, you know that,” she said.

He was disqualified from driving for three months and fined $700.

Magistrate suggests bicycle may be a better option for man

A man caught riding a motorised bicycle has had an extra two-year driving suspension added to his lengthy rap sheet.

Stephen Franks fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with driving while disqualified and driving an unregisterable vehicle.

While Magistrate Georgia Knight accepted the defendant may have thought he wasn’t breaching the law, she said a motorised bicycle was a vehicle for the purpose of this law.

“Don’t even dream of driving anything with a motor for 13, 14 years,” she said.

She suggested Mr Franks get a pushbike instead and reminded him to wear a helmet.

“With your record it’s not a good idea to make yourself obvious, I would have thought,” Magistrate Knight said.

He was fined $250 for driving an unregisterable vehicle, $600 for driving while disqualified and hit with a fresh 12-month good behaviour bond.

Teenager clocks up long list of driving offences

A teenager will learn her fate next month when she returns to Penrith Local Court to be sentenced after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified.

The court heard the 17-year-old had been convicted of negligent driving, driving while suspended and now driving while disqualified despite never holding a licence and being on parole for a police pursuit at the time of her latest offence.

Magistrate Georgia Knight told the teen she faced a full custodial sentence when she turned 18 in January if she reoffended.

“You have never proven you can drive or that you know the road rules,” she said on Monday.

“I want a report about you. It’s a bit too serious for a bond or a fine.”

The matter was adjourned to return to court on July 11.

Man keeps his licence despite police drug bust

A widower nabbed driving with methamphetamine still in his blood has been placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Penrith Local Court heard Giovanni Serravale had not committed any traffic offences since 2011 and had taken the drug ‘ice’ on a fishing trip with mates around the time of his partner’s passing.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell let the fatherof-two keep his licence, noting he had taken the drug some 15 hours before he drove, but cautioned road-side drug busts were on the rise.

“If you get caught again you’re going to lose your licence,” he said.

Magistrate bans woman from driving

A woman who drove while suspended and collided with another car has been barred from driving for a further two years. Donna Maree James fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving while suspended and failing to provide her particulars.

“If you’re not properly licenced you shouldn’t be driving,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said.

She was also ordered to enter into a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Man gets to keep licence but given stern warning

A motorist intercepted going more than 30km/h over the speed limit has had his licence conditionally reinstated.

Grantt Luke Bryant pleaded ignorance when he fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday to appeal his suspension, saying he thought he was travelling in an 80km/h zone.

“If I lose my licence, I lose my mortgage,” he said, adding he was “100 per cent in the wrong”.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said it was important to concentrate on road signage, especially in the Blue Mountains.

North St Marys: Man busted driving on suspended licence

A learner driver, whose license was suspended, was caught by police last week.

At about 5.35pm on Monday, May 23, police were patrolling Kurrajong Road, North St Marys, when they saw a vehicle and had cause to stop the driver.

The driver, a 19-year-old Bidwill man, was spoken to.

It is alleged he was asked to produce his licence with checks revealing the man held a learners drivers licence that was suspended.

He was charged with ‘drive motor vehicle while licence suspended’.

He will appear in Penrith Local court on June 23.

St Marys: Teenager caught drink driving

A man has been charged for exceeding the speed limit while driving along the M4 Motorway.

At about 5.10pm on Saturday, May 28, a 20-year-old Oakhurst man was stopped on the M4 Motorway at Orchard Hills.

It is alleged that his speed was checked when he was in the 80km/h road work zone. He was seen to be exceeding the speed limit.

He was stopped by police and asked to produce his licence.

Police made further checks on his license which revealed it was suspended.

He was charged with ‘exceed speed limit over 20km/h’ and ‘drive motor vehicle while licence suspended’.

He will appear in Penrith Local Court on June 30.

A P Plate driver was caught drink driving on the weekend after he returned a positive reading to a breath test.

At about 11.45pm on Saturday, May 28, police saw a vehicle travelling on Gabriels Lane, St Marys, and had cause to stop the driver.

The driver, a 19-year-old Werrington Downs man, was spoken to. He was subjected to a breath test, which proved positive.

He was arrested and conveyed to Penrith Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis that allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.023.

Checks of his licence revealed he was a P1 driver.

He was issued with a court attendance notice for the offence of ‘special category driver drive with special range PCA’.

The 19-year-old will appear at Penrith Local Court on July 15.

The Attorney General is a sitting government’s chief legal advisor. He or she heads up the Attorney General’s Department, which is in charge of developing and delivering policies that improve Australia’s legal framework, ensuring that we have adequate national security measures in place, develops strategies for emergency management, and also provides legal services to the Federal Government.

To provide you with some examples of the type of work that the Attorney General’s Department does, this can include things like: • The Australian Government Solicitor providing advice to the government about contentious issues, for example, the clearing of residents

from the site for the Badgerys Creek Airport.

• Providing services and clarity in relation to issues of international criminal and civil/corporate law.

• Coordinating Australia’s Counter Terrorism Intelligence Unit.

• Responding to natural disasters such as bushfires.

The Attorney General’s Department also has a role to play in Royal Commissions, such the current Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Other areas that fall under the jurisdiction of the AG’s Department are organised crime and other national legal issues such as anti-corruption, human trafficking, people smuggling, child sexual exploitation, and cybercrime.

There is of course cross over between the AG’s Department, Commonwealth law and State law, however the Attorney General and his or her team can be seen as a centre point for the government when it comes to maintaining the existing legal framework on a national level, and driving reform when necessary.

As a Sustainability Champion I am very pleased with the recent work Council has been undertaking.

Penrith Council has been a leader in sustainability for a number of years starting in 1999 when it implemented the Sustainable Penrith Program and I am proud to say that this commitment continues today.

Sustainability is about integrating environmental, social and economic sustainability considerations into our policy, planning, decision making and operational processes, and balancing short term priorities with longer term needs. Sustainability is about respecting our people, looking after our places, and delivering services to improve the well-being and liveability of our City now and into the future.

From composting to planting trees across the city, providing trees to the children in our childcare centres and hosting sell-out sustainability workshops, Council is leading the way in creating a sustainable future.

I was particularly excited to meet with Jon Dee, social entrepreneur and founder of Planet Ark when we launched One Tree Per Child in Penrith

at Council’s Child Care Centres last week. Council is planting 46 mature trees at selected Childcare Centres that have been identified as located in ‘hot spots’ needing more shade coverage. In addition, we are giving approximately 3000 seedlings to the children for them to plant at home.

The upcoming Waste Not festival on Sunday, June 5 is a chance to celebrate the efforts and significant achievements of the Penrith community in reducing the amount of local waste sent to landfill. It provides an opportunity to come together to learn more about resource recovery in a free family festival full of dance, sound and art.

Penrith residents continue to demonstrate a responsible approach to resource recovery and sustainability.

This approach is now embedded in their daily habits, actions and behaviours which shows we have clearly ‘Got it sorted’ when it comes to waste.

Don’t start the fire Bushfire season might be over but Penrith City Council is reminding the community to check before lighting a fire outdoors.

‘Backyard burning’, including burning domestic waste or vegetation in the open or in incinerators, is not allowed in the Penrith Local Government Area to protect local and regional air quality and public health. Council Rangers or the police can issue on-the-spot fines for this offence.

However, Council can approve the burning of dead vegetation in ‘pile burns’ under certain conditions. On rural properties bigger than one acre, burning cut and stacked vegetation is generally permitted from April to September each year, within certain limits.

Fire may have been deliberately lit Factory blaze at North St Marys under intense police investigation

Help for victims Victims of crime with money problems will receive free financial counselling, thanks to a new partnership announced by the State Government.

Under the new Comprehensive Services for Victims of Crime (CSVC) partnership, the NSW Government’s Victims Services will work with the Financial Counsellors’ Association of NSW (FCAN) to give victims of crime facing financial hardship specialist help.

“Access to free, independent and confidential financial counselling can be a big help to people who have been victims of crime,” said NSW Attorney General Gabrielle Upton.

olice are continuing to investigate a suspicious fire that sent five buildings up in flames at an industrial site in North St Marys last weekend.

At about 9.50pm on Friday, May 27, emergency services were called to Plasser Crescent, North St Marys, after reports a building was well alight.

It took over 50 firefighters to extinguish

the blaze, that damaged several businesses.

Officers from St Marys Local Area Command attended and commenced investigations.

“No one was at the premises at the time and there have been no reports of any injuries,” police said in a statement.

A crime scene was established.

Crime scene examiners attended the scene on Saturday, May 28, to search for any forensic evidence.

Glen Laund of Huntingwood Fire Station told the ABC there was a large explosion.

“At about a quarter to 10, there was an explosion,” Mr Laund said.

“It was loud enough to rock the fire station and access was difficult, there was a door collapse, a broken gas main.”

Police are treating the fire as suspicious and are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have information to contact St Marys Police Station on 9677 7499.

ormer gangster John Pridmore will be sharing his story of how he found God in rough times at Our Lady of The Rosary Church in St Marys this Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7.

Mr Pridmore has just finished a tour reaching more than 7,000 young people in schools and prisons after speaking at international conferences, most recently in Chicago and Florida.

The 49-year-old served two prison sentences in his teens and went on to become a feared enforcer in the London underworld.

“My key message is to tell the audience that God loves everyone and they have wonderful gifts to help others – God’s plan for us is to be free of worry and anxiety,” Mr Pridmore told the Weekender.

So we are three weeks into the election campaign and all we’ve heard about is “Jobs, Growth and Innovation” from the Government. Where are the jobs coming from? Where is the growth? The last employment figures said full-time jobs are down, but casual jobs are up. How can people live on three hours a week?

Most people are looking for more hours.

Inflation is the lowest it has ever been, the same as wages. I can’t see the justification of giving $50 billion, unless there are strings attached, to jobs. How do we know that these tax cuts dollars stay in this country? It will improve the bottom line which will increase executive pays, but we have no guarantee that these people will give people more hours or employ more people. Giving tax cuts to small businesses who earn $2 million or less is OK because

they need the help to compete against larger companies, as long as they look after their workers and pay the right wage. There are too many people out there still with adult children and their partners, some with grandchildren living at home, because they can’t save to have the Australian dream of a home of their own. This is because the Government can’t guarantee full-time jobs. You must look at how we can help the employed, the unemployed and under employed by providing the best education system.

Veteran firefighter has seen it all After almost four decades of service, Phil Marsh has fought his last fire and is set to enjoy retirement “I will definitely miss the comradery around all of the guys, especially at meal times during our long shifts.

“I’ll also miss jumping on the truck every time the siren sounds.”

One incident that has stood out for Mr Marsh is the fire at the Penrith Homemaker Centre on Mulgoa Road in 2012.

“I got to send the call out for that one and around 20 trucks turned up so we were using all our resources – it was the best call I made of my career,” he said.

An honour guard was held for Mr Marsh after his final shift at the station on Sunday, May 29, with crew members congratulating him on his career.

“The Firefighters at ‘102’ would like to wish Phil all the best in his retirement,” Senior Firefighter Peter Shaw said.

tation Commander at Regentville Fire Station, Phil Marsh, has hung his helmet up and taken off his bright yellow uniform for the last time after he wrapped up 37 years of service last weekend.

After starting out as an energetic and enthusiastic 22-year-old in September 1978, Mr Marsh said he has seen plenty of changes and plenty of fires during his time as a firefighter.

Speaking with the Weekender before his final shift, Mr Marsh said he hadn’t initially planned on joining the ranks.

“I was managing a family business in Blacktown at the time and a couple of guys from the local fire station would come in quite often and they told me I should sign up, so I did and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” he said.

37 years and 10 months down the track, Mr Marsh said he was feeling good about what he has accomplished.

“People do keep asking me what I feel like and I have to say I feel really good about everything and now I’ll get to be my own boss at home and do things I want to do,” he laughed.

Penrith Christian School celebrates major milestone JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith Christian School (PCS) celebrated 35 years in operation last week with the launch of their Early Childhood Satellite Centre for children with Autism.

The special event was met with a welcome from the principal and a morning tea, and was followed by school tours, classroom displays, trade school demonstrations and the launch of the centre.

PCS Executive Manager, Sharon Tuft, said she is happy to be a part of a school that is continually evolving.

“I have been an employee of PCS for over 15 years and I am honoured to be part of this major milestone in the life of the school,” she said.

“What I love most about PCS is the close-knit community that fosters an atmosphere of family with love and discipline.”

The school commenced as a ministry of what was then the Penrith Christian Fellowship Centre and was located in Dean Place before moving to a rural site in the Londonderry area between 1983 and 1984.

Free festival on Sunday DALE DRINKWATER

he Penrith community is being rewarded for their achievements in diverting waste away from landfill, with a free festival this Sunday.

The Waste Not festival will be held at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre with a range of activities for all ages and abilities, including parkour, drumming, dance and art performances and displays.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the festival is a chance to celebrate the Penrith community’s efforts and significant achievement in reducing their waste sent to landfill.

“This is an opportunity to come together to learn more about resource recovery at a fun festival full of dance, sound and art activities,” she said.

“Penrith residents, when it comes to waste, have clearly ‘got it sorted’.”

There will be art in abundance, with a sound installation by digital media artist Imogen Cranna and a visual art installation facilitated by western Sydney artist, David Capra.

Local youth will delight the community with a vocal performance, directed by guest choir master James Paul.

Kay Armstrong, Waste Not Artistic Director, and director of the day’s major performance, In Our Hands, said the community will learn to care for the environment together.

“This project is about bringing together communities, layering ideas, collaborating over time to create something unexpected and unique, something from

f you are on social media, you have probably viewed, or at least heard about, the “Chewbacca mask video” (if not, type that phrase into Google and you’ll find it!). It was a video of a woman in a van, filming herself wearing a Chewbacca mask that roars – which makes her laugh hysterically. It was streamed via FacebookLive to her friends, but quickly broke records and has been viewed over 150 million times.

Described in writing, it sounds completely mundane! And in many ways it was. But when she donned a mask intended for kids, her pure, childlike joy and laughter connected with viewers. People responded because it was innocent of any agenda, just her having fun and videoing something that she thought was hilarious. There were knockers – people who found it completely unfunny, who thought the viral nature of it was ridiculous and who didn’t ‘get it’. Personally I didn’t find the video itself particularly funny – but I did love her complete disregard of social expectations and her utter hilarity at something so simple.

So what can ‘Chewbacca woman’ teach us in business? Maybe she is on to something when she shows us that being authentic and spontaneous, even though it’s ridiculous and mundane, connects with people.

Perhaps we are sometimes too serious about the ‘business of business’?

Perhaps we worry too much about being taken ‘seriously’ that we forget to be authentic? I know as a micro business owner, I can be guilty of this. When I look at my long term clients, I know one of the reasons they have stayed loyal to me is because of genuine connection.

Yes, they like my work and want me to be professional! But sharing some personal information, making a joke during email correspondence, and talking to them authentically as I would a friend, seems to be a big factor. But it took me quite a few years to realise how important this interaction was.

When people laugh and joke, they build relationships. Positive workplace relationships promote positive workplace behaviours such as knowledge sharing, informal training, and empathy in times of need.

The culture that emerges within a company is frequently the result of interactions that team members are having with one another, which all begins with how you present those desired attitudes and behaviours as a leader. Remember that transparency, consistency, and ongoing commitment to your vision are the keys to helping you build an effective culture for your business.

“This is particularly beneficial when deciding what breed of dog best suits your lifestyle and very helpful for young and growing families,” Ms Christofi said.

“There will be talks about children’s safety with dogs, which highlight the correct way to approach dogs and the importance of supervision with young children.”

These talks are part of the NSW Government’s ‘Responsible Pet Education Program’ in schools.

Turning back Time

Emu Plains ignored and left to fight for itself

One year ago...

T

here was a time when Emu Plains could have been described as looking like an apocalyptic wasteland.

A story similarly heard of today, residents felt neglected as they paid their rates and saw very little improvements made to their area.

However, for Emu Plains locals in 1963, this story was more than just about improvements, but about any maintenance at all.

Overgrown and eroded, the area was stuck in the middle of a game of shifting responsibility, as it waited to become part of Penrith City Council, and no longer under the control of Blue Mountains City Council.

The Emu Plains Progress Association made many submissions to the councils at the time, defending the angry and grief stricken residents of Emu Plains, who felt they now lived in ‘no man’s land’.

Newspaper reports of February 14, 1963, were far from romantic, with fears already ‘unusable’ areas would continue to be neglected for several more months, until Penrith City Council took over in the middle of the year.

It described months of no attention to main roads, footpaths that were so overgrown they were now unusable, and grass at a playground was over a metre high, making it too dangerous for children to play in fear of snakes.

On top of this, there was a huge drain hole that one resident described as being big enough to swallow a house.

The hole came from the draining of a new subdivision, and pipes travelled under the newly constructed River Road, and discharged the water into the Nepean River.

However, lives were soon at risk as the water gradually eroded so far back from the river, and began to encroach on River Road, endangering traffic.

The contractor swore that the point of discharge into the river was based on Council’s specifications, but Blue Mountains City Council took no responsibility.

A council engineer said a similarly eroded outlet just south was repaired by its contractor and not council, suggesting the latest one should have been too.

Thankfully, Penrith Council did eventually take over Emu Plains, and it remains in their control today.

Remember when...

80 long years ago, in 1936, the Penrith Ambulance Station was built.

Located on the Great Western Highway, the original station included a garage, first aid room, and staff facilities on the ground floor, and a four bedroom home on the first floor.

The ambulance station was expanded in 1970 and is still used today, with a new Ambulance ‘Superstation’ under construction on the eastern end of High Street, Penrith.

Who knows how it will look in 80 years from now!

One year ago in our June 5, 2015 edition of the Weekender, we chatted with the one and only Paul Hogan.

Inside, locals were feeling like they were living back in the dark ages, after losing their Telstra home phone and Internet services for weeks on end.

Penrith Council was on the receiving end of a huge amount of development applications for units worth over $300 million.

Glenmore Park resident and CEO of charity Little Wings, Kevin Robinson, was sacked after allegations of inappropriate sexual misconduct were made against him.

Penrith Council decided to get tough on 24-hour gyms that did not provide around the clock staff with concerns over the safety of patrons.

We uncovered one of Penrith’s best kept secrets, the State Record Centre in Kingswood, after a local man was visually reproducing the records for the community.

A brave local mother and daughter shaved their heads for Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, for their son and brother who is sick with the incurable disease.

In sport, Panthers fullback Matt Moylan was struck down with a season-ending ankle injury that cruelled Penrith’s NRL season.

T

he last two weeks would have been agonising for Penrith coach Anthony Griffin and his players.

When you produce a performance as poor as what the Panthers did against Gold Coast in Round 11, the first thing you want to do is get back out on the field and apply a bit of course correction.

The scoreboard showed a tight game against the Titans but the truth is it was a performance that is best forgotten. A team considered a premiership chance should not be dropping games like that mid-way through the season.

With that game behind them, the Panthers face one of the toughest road trips in the NRL – a visit to AAMI Park to take on the Melbourne Storm.

Penrith’s efforts against the Storm in recent years haven’t been too bad, but the fact remains that they are Penrith’s bogey team. The Panthers have won just 23.3 per cent of their all-time matches against Melbourne, their lowest winning percentage against any team in the NRL. That’s just seven wins from 30 matches, and while history does not always govern the future, there is no doubt that it is an added pressure on the Panthers this week.

Origin does play a role in this game with Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy not naming Queensland stars Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith in his side for Saturday night’s contest. However, if they backup OK from Wednesday night’s match, expect them to be late inclusions.

Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has named both Matt Moylan and Josh Mansour to back-up but has players on stand-by should all not go to plan.

The Panthers have shown this year that they can match it with the league’s best teams, coming from behind to beat the

Broncos, almost grabbing victory over the Sharks and taking the Cowboys to the last few minutes.

On paper, the Panthers have the team to take down the high flying Storm on Saturday night. However, one thing that has let the Panthers down this season is their inability to control the game. On too many occasions they have allowed their opposition to dictate the terms of the match and while they’ve still often been able to claim victory, it has resulted in far too many close games – and you’re simply not going to win all of them when you’re inviting your opponents to steal the points.

Melbourne love controlling games. They love getting down and dirty in the wrestle, they love making the most of a kick to touch and they command field position better than any side in the competition.

The Panthers need to find a way to take control away from the Storm, and a strong start will be the first step. If the Panthers are 12-0 down after 15 or 20 minutes, the game will be as good as gone.

The 25-year-old has gone from winning the Dally M Hooker of the Year two years ago to being in reserve grade this weekend and without a club for 2017.

Phil Gould confirmed on Wednesday that ‘Chicko’ wouldn’t be offered a new deal at Penrith next season, just a day after he was dumped from the first grade side by coach Anthony Griffin. I’m told that Segeyaro and Griffin have had several run-ins this year, dating all the way back to the pre-season. Last week’s photo controversy, which resulted in Segeyaro receiving a warning from the police, was the last straw for a frustrated Griffin.

since the return of Matt Moylan from injury, but he may get a chance when the Panthers skipper is unavailable for the game against Cronulla before Origin III. It might be Smith’s last chance to impress in first grade, as I’m told it’s unlikely he’ll get a new deal at the foot of the Mountains next season. Smith wouldn’t be a bad pick-up for a team in need of a utility player but his best chance of a deal with good cash may be in England.

t was a bittersweet feeling for young Penrith star Bryce Cartwright on Wednesday night, who watched the State of Origin opener with fellow Panther and Blues discard Trent Merrin.

Bittersweet because Cartwright could’ve been at ANZ Stadium last night, sitting with Blues officials, after he was chosen as a NSW Blues Development Player for Origin I. Less than an hour after the 21-year-old’s name was read out at The Star casino function last week, Cartwright was forced to pull out of the unique honour almost immediately through injury.

Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday afternoon, Cartwright revealed the

reasoning behind his quick withdrawal from the Blues squad.

“I was having a bit of trouble with my thumb, I hurt it against Gold Coast the day before, and I was having some trouble with my knee as well, so the doctor said I wouldn’t be able to train all week and there was pretty much no point going into camp if I couldn’t train,” he said.

“The main reason for me being selected was to train and getting used to what happens in a camp like that.”

The second-rower’s name had been tossed around all season as a guaranteed Origin bolter but after a mixed performance in Penrith’s loss to the Titans the day before the team announcement, coach Laurie Daley chose Manly’s Dylan Walker as the Blues’ spark off the bench.

Cartwright is still hopeful he’ll finally get to experience Blues camp for Origin II or III.

“I didn’t even think I was going to be in the team to be honest, when it happened I was really pumped and excited but I sort of knew that I wouldn’t be going in with the way my thumb and knee was.

“It was an honour to be named in that

role and fingers crossed that I get to go back in sooner rather than later.”

With Penrith enjoying the bye last round, Cartwright’s minor niggles have now healed with the backrower saying he’s ready to rip into the Melbourne Storm this Saturday night.

“I’m feeling good now and the body’s feeling fresh and ready to go,” he said.

The debate about when and where State of Origin should be played raises its head every year and while every media expert, football administrator and NRL fan has an opinion about the topic it seems to be forgotten about fairly quickly once the Origin series is over.

The constant debate comes mainly from the coaches during this period and revolves mostly around the availability of their players and the impact it has on their clubs during the Origin series.

It certainly does have a negative effect on some clubs at this time of the year but unfortunately for the coaches and for the clubs while the game continues to earn millions of dollars in revenue off the back of the Origin series, nothing is likely to change.

Channel Nine also play a big role here as they strongly want the game on Wednesday nights, and they pay plenty of money for the rights. This would make stand-alone weekends almost

impossible under the current television rights agreement.

I understand the coaches’ point of view on this matter and if I was an NRL coach I would want my best players available for every match.

But while I am just a supporter I must admit I love the tradition of a Wednesday night State of Origin clash.

Penrith travel to Melbourne this week and in recent years this has been a very tough assignment.

In fact, the Panthers have struggled against the Storm ever since they entered the competition back in 1998.

While the Panthers will be eager to atone their last round loss to the underrated Gold Coast Titans, the Storm will be hoping that their key players get through Origin unscathed and are able to back-up for the clash against the Panthers on Saturday night.

Also named to take on the fifth-placed Tigers is Penrith’s talented Holden Cup trio of Nathan Cleary, Tyrone May and Dylan Edwards, who were very impressive in their respective ISP debuts.

Will Smith will captain the side from the centres while Moses Leota and Sitaleki Akauola have also been named despite being selected in the Panthers NRL side on an extended bench.

Penrith, who sit in eighth position on for and against and two byes, will be desperate for back to back wins, to ensure they remain in the top eight for another week.

A controlled start from St Marys saw the forwards win the middle and start to dominate field position with an excellent completion rate.

It was an outstanding team performance from St Marys who played with control, aggression and a consistent effort for the full 80 minutes.

Driving in a new direction

hange is never an easy thing to navigate, but it’s a concept that Byron Bay metalcore band Parkway Drive have wholeheartedly embraced on their latest album ‘Ire’.

Speaking to the band’s frontman Winston McCall, the decision to explore a new musical direction was a natural evolution for Parkway Drive.

“The main people involved in writing

the record all individually – before we even started getting into it – all felt that we’d kind of played this formula out to its end,” he said.

“Anything we tried to create would simply be a shadow of something that we once had a lot more passion for.”

The gamble paid off, with fans and critics embracing the new release with overwhelming passion.

The aptly titled ‘Ire’ sees Parkway Drive at their most vocal; but it’s not just the music that’s heavy, the album touches on a range of social and political issues.

“It’s a reflection of what I see happening in the world around me,” Winston explained.

“When you’re seeing coverage of world issues it’s very hard to keep your head in the sand.”

It’s not hard to see why a fanbase of increasingly engaged youth would be attracted to the anger that features heavily in Parkway Drive’s new work.

“Fans have reacted to these songs in a way that I really hoped would happen,” Winston said.

“It is a fine line between preaching and simply trying to create a song that has a message behind it.”

If it wasn’t enough to take a figurative leap of faith, the band decided to take a literal leap for the film clip for ‘Vice Grip’.

All five members learnt how to skydive,

much to the terror of the height-phobic frontman.

“It was a joke, because I’m terrified of heights and we just thought it would a cool/hilarious concept for a clip,” Winston laughed.

Winston’s final thoughts on the decision to go big for the film clip are a perfect metaphor for the entire album process.

“It was very liberating. It completely crushed that fear I had and opened me up to an entire new world,” he said.

e never cease to be amazed at how winemakers can so often turn adversity in the vineyard to success in the bottle. The latest example coming our way is a 2015 Single Vineyard Dairy Hill Semillon from the Hunter Valley’s Briar Ridge.

For this very rewarding drop came from a vintage that winemaker Gwyn Olsen now somewhat casually shrugs off as “challenging”, testifying what anyone who knows her will agree, that Gwyn has never been one to shy away from a challenge.

“2015 was characterised by very dry conditions at the start of the growing season,” she said.

“But the juggling act in the vineyard paid off, resulting in low-cropping but fruit driven, precise and complex wines.”

While directors may often take a backseat to their well known lead actors, Quentin Tarantino is one of a handful that have made it to icon status.

With a cult following and a slew of hit films under his belt, Tarantino has become one of the most revered directors in modern day cinema.

The latest (and eighth) release from the award winning director is ‘The Hateful Eight’, a western mystery film starring Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Set after the Civil War, Bounty Hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) is on his way to Red Rock with his fugitive captive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) when they come across fellow bounty hunter Major

Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and Sheriff Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins).

After the group get lost in a blizzard they seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery where four unfamiliar faces greet them; the hangman, the cow puncher, the confederate and the Mexican.

‘The Hateful Eight’ follows the usual Tarantino trademarks, with over the top violence mixed with humour and clever dialogue.

The film has received mostly positive reviews and earned Jennifer Jason Leigh Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

‘The Hateful Eight’ is out now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital.

Money Monster

Rated M // KATE REID Hollywood heavyweights Julia Roberts and George Clooney join forces for this week’s dramatic thriller ‘Money Monster’.

The film centres around financial advisor Lee Gates (George Clooney) who hosts a show called ‘Money Monster’ on cable TV. During a live broadcast a deliveryman wanders onto the set and holds Gates at gunpoint.

The intruder is angry investor Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), who lost everything after the crash of high tech stock that Gates promoted on his show.

Broadcast on live TV, the deadly standoff continues while Lee and his producer Patty (Julia Roberts) work against the clock to uncover the truth behind the crash.

‘Money Monster’ is now screening at Hoyts Penrith.

Nathan Drake is back for one final adventure in ‘Uncharted 4’, and this PS4 exclusive proves a fitting end to an iconic series of games.

The opening of the highly anticipated action/adventure game sees Drake adjusting to a more relaxed lifestyle with wife Elena, several years after the ‘Uncharted 3’ adventure.

That more relaxed life is disrupted when Drake discovers his brother Sam, who he thought had been killed years earlier, arrives suddenly on his doorstep.

You can pretty much guess what happens from here – there’s treasure to be found and Nathan and Sam know they’re the ones to find it.

The ‘Uncharted 4’ plot line follows a

similar path to the previous three games – lots of climbing, plenty of third person shooting and some pretty fierce action scenes.

But the big reveals along the way, and at the game’s conclusion, is what makes ‘Uncharted 4’ something special for players of the previous games.

There’s moments you’re amazed and left gasping for breath, others where you even feel a little emotional and parts that will increase your heartbeat significantly.

Some good improvements have been made to the ‘Uncharted’ experience as well – I found the sometimes annoying puzzles much more fun in this fourth game, and a little easier to solve. As somebody who had to turn to online walkthroughs once or twice in the first three games, I found myself not needing any assistance this time around.

I highly recommend finishing the game in two or three long sittings – it deserves to be treated as a story that continues to unfold with momentum.

If you haven’t played the previous three games, you’ll still love ‘Uncharted 4’ but for die hard fans of the series, there couldn’t have been a better conclusion.

Ê Kyle Sandilands could be heading back to television soon if rumours of him narrating a new observational series ring true. GO! has commissioned eight episodes of ‘Meet the Hockers’, a series about Australian pawn shops, pitched

by Kyle, his business manager Andrew Hawkins and well-known TV producer Peter Abbott. Filming began in April at Aceben pawnbroking in Sydney. Knowing Kyle’s love of pawn shows, this seems like the perfect fit. Ê Channel Ten will screen highly anticipated new shows ‘24: Legacy’, ‘Prison Break’ and ‘The Exorcist’, thanks to its deal with CBS and Fox. It’ll also air the ‘MacGyver’ reboot, ‘This Is Us’ with Mandy Moore, baseball drama ‘Pitch’, ‘Bull’ starring Michael Weatherly, and new Katherine Heigl drama ‘Doubt’. The new shows are expected to launch in Australia later this year and early next year. Ê It’s been a while since this show was on our screens last but season five of ‘Once Upon A Time’ will finally premiere on 7Flix this Tuesday, June 7 at 7.30pm.

This season introduces new characters and returns many from previous seasons. Ê Pop star Mariah Carey, who is infamous for her acting talent, has just signed a multiple telemovie deal with Hallmark in the US. She will develop, executive produce, direct and co-star in three telemovies, and compose and produce an

original song for each. Carey is also currently filming her own reality series for E! titled ‘Mariah’s World’.

Ê The annual ‘Tony Awards’ will return to Foxtel Arts later this month celebrating everything that is Broadway theatre.

Hosted by talk show host James Corden, it will screen live at 10am on Monday, June 13, with a replay later that night. Ê For any of those households out there that have access to the ‘Wollon-

gong channels’ – you know the ones I’m talking about (WIN, Prime and Southern Cross) – there’s been a major shakeup that you need to know about. WIN Television and Channel Ten have confirmed a fiveyear program affiliate deal for regional Australia. This means that WIN stations will now carry Ten content from July 1.

The deal follows Channel Nine ending a long-standing partnership with WIN and signing with Southern Cross. Viewers will not need to rescan their television to access new programming.

Long weekend carnival Panthers Leagues Club

The June long weekend carnival will be held at Panthers on Sunday, June 12, with the whole family invited to join in.

When people find out I’m a nutritionist they often ask me if I could write them up a meal plan. My response is always ‘no’.

Now this isn’t because I don’t want to help – those who know me well know I’m always happy to talk about food, sometimes to the point of annoyance – but I don’t believe that meal plans are the right approach to healthy eating.

For me the problem with meal plans is that much like diets they’re too prescriptive. While they have their place in a clinical setting for

patients who are managing medical conditions, for the general population it’s more important to develop a healthy, intuitive relationship with food rather than being told exactly what to eat for each meal.

By now most of us have a general idea of which foods are nutritious and which are less so. We know that fruits and vegetables are going to

provide us with more nutrients than donuts and chips.

We also know that overeating on a regular basis is not the healthiest approach.

So instead of following a meal plan, focus on the nutritious foods you enjoy and start incorporating more of them into your diet.

If you’re not a huge fan of vegetables/fruits/legumes etc try to find ways to work them into your favourite meals. After all, you’re more likely to eat well if you enjoy what you’re eating.

The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating is another great resource which will help to give you an idea of how many serves of the different food groups you should be aiming for each day. Keep in mind though that it should only be used as a rough guide as every day will be a little different.

At each meal aim for the majority of your plate to be plant based ie. vegetables, salad, fruits, wholegrain/ high fibre grains, legumes etc. and consume other foods such as meat and dairy in smaller amounts.

When it comes to quantity remember the Japanese rule of ‘Hara Hachi Bu’ ie. eat until you’re 80 per cent full and focus on eating slowly so you’re less likely to over consume.

restige car maker Volvo Cars has unveiled two new concept cars that marks the official launch of its global small car strategy and moves the Swedish brand in a new direction.

In line with Volvo’s stated ambition to sell up to one million electrified cars by 2025, the new 40 series range includes an electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid variant.

The 40 series cars will be the first built around Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has been specially created for smaller cars. They will also offer a full range of innovative connectivity services, plus the world’s most advanced standard package of safety features and Scandinavian interior design.

“Our new expanded range of smaller cars will improve and broaden Volvo’s presence in an important and growing market segment in Australia and around the world,” Managing Director of Volvo Cars Australia, Kevin McCann said.

“In 2015 when we launched the new XC90 SUV in Australia we revealed the versatility of the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).”

The small car range will include a pure battery electric vehicle as well as Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain variants. The first new 40 series car is planned to go into production in 2017, with Australian arrival likely in late 2017 or early 2018.

ust weeks after he won his second Player of the Season Award, St Marys junior and Western Sydney Wanderers star Mark Bridge has quit the club to join Changrai United in Thailand.

The club’s all-time top goal scorer, Bridge joined the Wanderers as a Foundation Player in June 2012.

While the forward had already made a name for himself in the A-League by the time he arrived at the club, no one predicted the impact Bridge would have once he arrived at Western Sydney.

Making his debut in the Wanderers’ first ever game, Bridge scored the club’s first ever goal, the club’s first ever home goal, the club’s first ever hat-trick and won the club’s first ever Wanderers Medal as Player of the Season.

No Wanderers player has beat his first season tally of 11 goals in a season and his form has not waned as his second Wanderers Medal this season testifies after another nine goals and eight assists in 2015/16.

The 30-year-old Blacktown product has well and truly done it all.

Bridge leaves the Wanderers as a Western Sydney icon and will remain synonymous with the club forever, scoring a record 26 goals in 112 A-League, AFC Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and FFA Cup matches.

Panthers on the verge of improvement Coach confident mid-season break will help her Premier League side recharge its batteries NATHAN TAYLOR

ighly respected netball coach Lisa Beehag admits it has been a difficult start to the Netball NSW Premier League season for her Panthers Opens team but is hopeful things will turn around sooner rather than later.

The Panthers Opens team, which is made up of players and staff from the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury Netball Associations, currently sits in sixth position with two wins and four losses as the midway point of the new competition approaches.

Speaking with the Weekender, Beehag said the team had struggled to overcome a few injuries and player unavailability to start the season.

“It’s been a tough start, we’ve had a couple of really good wins and a couple of losses that were difficult for us in a sense that we had a few players unavailable, which didn’t allow the team to keep the flow that we’d been building going,” she said.

“We had to a register a new player from Canberra because we lost Alix McDermott to injury and Vanessa Mullampy is

With the entire competition enjoying a week off this week, Beehag said it was a good way for her side to recharge.

“Everybody is working really hard, we’ve just got a couple of injuries, and having the week off has come at the right time which will help out with various niggles,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to having everybody back on deck for our game against Sutherland next week.”

Even though the Panthers aren’t quite lighting it up yet in the Opens competition, they are performing out of sight in the new Under 20’s format.

The young Panthers are currently sitting in second position at the halfway point with four wins and two losses to their name.

Beehag said the Under 20’s competition has been a breath of fresh air for the new team.

“The Under 20’s competition is really moving up, it’s a very close and exciting competition to watch,” she said.

“I think that competition is going to have the biggest impact going forward because it has allowed young players to develop within their own age group.”

This Wednesday night, June 8, the Panthers will return to Netball Central at Sydney Olympic Park to battle the thirdplaced Sutherland Stingrays in Round 7.

Beehag hopes to see plenty out of her most consistent performers Nikki Robson and Lauren Hutchinson.

“They have been really strong for us in the mid-court and that’s really helped us this year,” she said.

Japan is next stop for Nelson-Cranfield Story continued from » p. 72 “I spend a lot of my spare time in Canberra and Newcastle training while during the Christmas holidays I’ll spend five or so weeks at Port Macquarie practicing at a world class facility,” Nelson-Cranfield said.

While Nelson-Cranfield is one of Australia’s best young water skiers, he’s also no stranger to international waters with excellent results in pro events in both the US and New Zealand.

In September Nelson-Cranfield will again hit the world stage when he becomes one of six Aussies to compete at the 2016 Water Ski World University Championships in Japan.

In Japan, Nelson-Cranfield will compete in three different events including slalom skiing, a trick event and ‘jump’.

“Jump is an event where we basically throw ourselves at a ramp and see how far we can go on two skis,” NelsonCranfield explained.

“My best event is slalom skiing, which is where you have to go around designated buoys on the flat water.”

Nelson-Cranfield said it’s hard to comprehend just how much his life has changed since that day as a kid on the Hawkesbury, but one thing’s for sure, that random water skiing lesson from his parents was no doubt the best present he’s ever received.

The awards were handed out by Member for Londonderry Prue Car, Penrith City Councillor John Thain and Special Olympics gold medal-winning swimmer Sandy Freeman.

“Many of these young people may never have received an award before and we particularly wanted to recognise these smaller achievements as opposed to achievements at a highly competitive level,” PATH Inc Inclusive Recreation Officer, Pam Crossan said.

rent Nelson-Cranfield began life as a water skier at the tender age of eight-years-old when his parents purchased him a ‘Learn to Ski’ lesson on the nearby Hawkesbury River.

While most parents would think a water skiing lesson for their son would have been a fun way to pass the afternoon, Nelson-Cranfield’s parents saw something in their child that day that would quickly turn into an obsession that has him competing on the world stage.

“Mum and Dad saw the motivation and passion I had in the sport and from that moment they gave me every opportunity they could to bring out my potential,” the 21-year-old Glenmore Park resident said.

13 years on and Nelson-Cranfield is now one of the world’s best water skiers, currently ranked at number 38 but, in a few days time, is expected to climb into the world top 15.

It’s been an incredible ride for the Western Sydney University student, who also runs his own car detailing and tutoring business in between training and competing all over the world.
