A

$30 million revamp of the Glenmore Park Town Centre is finally underway.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown was on hand to officially launch construction of the precinct last Friday.

It will include new specialty stores and shops, including Coles and Aldi, and also a gym.

“I’m honoured as Mayor to have the opportunity to commence construction on this much-anticipated second stage of the Town Centre,” she said.

“I know the residents are really looking forward to this next stage.”

It’s anticipated over 400 jobs will be created when the Town Centre is completed as well as the jobs created during the construction process.

Upon completion, the Glenmore Park and greater Penrith community will have a larger shopping choice with Coles, Aldi and Woolworths, a gym, over 60 specialty tenants and over 750 car spaces, including undercover spots.

“Council has worked extremely closely with owners Village Fair to create an improved urban design outcome that integrates well with the existing Town Centre,” Cr McKeown said.

“Council officers will also continue to work closely with Village Fair to minimise the impact to residents during the construction phase.”

Director of Village Fair Pty Ltd, Rick Abrahams, thanked Council for their support in delivering their vision for the new building.

“A project like this would never come to fruition without working closely with the team at Penrith Council,” he said.

“We are looking forward to commencing construction and completing our vision for Glenmore Park Town Centre and the Glenmore Park community.”

The new section of the Glenmore Park Town Centre is expected to be open in late 2017, just in time for Christmas.

Horses lost after wild weather rocks local area JADE ALIPRANDI

hree horses from the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Nepean Centre have lost their lives after the wild weather that lashed Sydney last weekend.

The team from RDA Nepean, at Orchard Hills, were in damage control earlier this week after their paddocks were left completely flooded.

Three horses were left injured and three were unaccounted for by the time Tuesday morning arrived.

By Tuesday afternoon, the three horses were located, with two deceased and one, affectionately known as Buddy, found alive trapped in mud next to a swollen creek under the M4 Motorway.

What first appeared to be a miracle rescue soon turned to tragedy when Buddy had to be put down on Wednesday despite the best efforts of medical teams.

SES worker David King, who was involved in the rescue on Tuesday afternoon, said it was a tragic event.

“Riding for the Disabled is such a wonderful organisation and they do great things here,” he said.

“The loss of those horses is tragic; it’s a loss to the community.”

In a statement released yesterday, RDA thanked the local community for its ongoing support.

“Our priority now is the care and welfare of our horses,” the statement said.

“We are humbled by the offers of assistance and last night was able to put some fresh winter rugs on the horses at the Centre thanks to the generosity of locals.”

As of yesterday RDA staff were still unable to access their buildings at Orchard Hills to assess the damage.

“Our volunteers are holding together as a team and are staying strong to make sure our horses are looked after and dealing with the shock and heartache felt by everyone involved, in the coming days we will be able to let the community know how they can assist,” the statement said.

The storm caused chaos around Penrith this week with roads closed off in multiple suburbs leaving some residents stranded, particularly those that live in and around Wallacia.

The Nepean River peaked on Monday night near 8.0 metres at Wallacia and at Penrith the river peaked at around 3.8 metres with very minor flooding.

The Penrith SES received hundreds of calls for help.

ometimes you just can’t win if you’re a politician. Tell a lie, and you’ll be (rightly) crucified. Tell the truth, and the same applies.

For Bill Shorten, telling it how it is earned him the ire of many women this week, and I’m still trying to work out why telling the truth got the Opposition Leader into so much trouble.

Believe his critics and what Bill Shorten did on Sunday was front the media and say only this: “Let’s face it, men in Australia rely on the women in Australia to do the child care and to organise the child care.”

Those lazy, do-nothing men!

“Where you’ve got mums working part-time or full-time, it’s the second job in the family, and frankly they’re doing a lot of the unpaid work, they’ve got to try to work out the child care bills,” was the other cherry-picked line from the press conference.

Truth is, that was a very small part of what was an extensive commitment to child care announced by the Opposition, and a small snippet of a long and detailed press conference.

In fact, you can read the full transcript from the press conference on Bill Shorten’s website if you so wish.

The full transcript gives Mr Shorten’s comments enormous context.

I can only presume that a seasoned journalist like Lisa Wilkinson from Channel Nine’s ‘Today’ show read that transcript before she went on air with a major attack on Mr Shorten, and you have to wonder why she proceeded with it.

‘In other words’. Ie, you’re putting words into Mr Shorten’s mouth, Lisa.

The reason Mr Shorten singled out women with his comments was twofold.

Firstly, his announcement was very much targeted at them.

The entire point of what appears to be a pretty solid child care package was trying to make it easier, and more affordable, for mums to return to work after having children.

Anyone, staunch feminist or otherwise, who suggests that’s not an issue is living under a giant rock somewhere.

“Working mums in this country should not face the choice as to whether or not they pay double child care fees, or drop out of work,” Mr Shorten said.

That comment didn’t get cherry-picked as much as the others.

But Mr Shorten is right – families across the nation face that very tough situation every single day, and often there’s a realisation that returning to work is actually going to be impractical because of the high costs of child care.

Somehow, what was a very positive announcement for women got hijacked by those who are determined to live their life with their outrage meter set to extreme.

Men and women living in the real world who actually look at the child care policy and Mr Shorten’s full press conference will surely give the whole thing the big green tick (if green ticks are still allowed – maybe we should go for a more neutral colour).

The other point is that, at risk of pushing the stereotype, Mr Shorten was right: women do generally organise and arrange the child care.

Is that sexist, or making women ‘second class citizens’? Please, I want to throw up my Nutri Grain at the suggestion (which, by the way, has a very offensive and sexist slogan – ‘Iron MAN food’).

Here’s a reality check: Drive around on the weekend and the majority of people you’ll see mowing the lawns are blokes.

Ask who made sure little Johnny had his lunch box packed correctly and the answer will probably be ‘mum’.

Exceptions? Obviously there’s plenty.

But men and women are different (shock, horror!) and tend to navigate towards different responsibilities in the family and household. That doesn’t make one person or responsibility more important than the other.

And to be honest, given I struggle to even put a shirt on a clothes hanger correctly, I don’t think my wife would trust me to decide where our kids were going to spend eight to 10 hours of their day. My trademark answer in all household issues – ‘that’ll do’ – probably wouldn’t be acceptable.

Nepean Hospital at breaking point State Government considers sending sick patients to neighbouring hospitals DALE DRINKWATER

ocal patients requiring emergency health care could be sent at least half an hour away to be treated at Hawkesbury, Westmead or Mt Druitt hospitals.

With Nepean Hospital under continued pressure, Health Minister Jillian Skinner admitted the Government is looking at sending patients to the surrounding hospitals.

The Bureau of Health Information reported that Nepean Hospital is in the bottom three of 80 hospitals in the state for its emergency department (ED) turnover.

It found even less patients were leaving the ED within the required four hour time frame between January to March this year, compared to the same period 12 months earlier.

Shadow Minister for Health, Walt Secord, said the admission by Ms Skinner confirms that Nepean Hospital is at breaking point, as it tries to deal with 68,000 emergency patients a year.

“Rather than diverting patients to other hospitals, the State Government should properly resource Nepean Hospital so patients can be treated at the closest facility,” he said.

hat we’ve got right now in the electorate of Lindsay is ‘dirty politics’ according to far right political activist and Australia First Party (AFP) candidate for Lindsay, Jim Saleam.

“The candidates are products of an underground struggle for political influence,” he said.

Mr Saleam, National President for the AFP, said although he lives in Tempe in Sydney’s inner west, his interest in the seat of Lindsay is purely political and ideological.

“We are one of the few ideological parties – we weigh things up and try to put things in a framework,” he said.

After ‘weighing things up’, they argue for the compulsory detoxification of people affected by serious drugs and are against the extension of Western Sydney University’s Kingswood campus.

Mr Saleam said the AFP are campaigning against mosques in Kemps Creek, and they believe in the total termination of the national immigration program.

“The one in place is not immigration, it’s ethnic cleaning policy,” he said.

They oppose large scale developments along the Nepean River that Mr Saleam

said will destroy local fruit, vegetable and chicken industries, and like the Australian Liberty Alliance, they are against overseas property purchasers.

But Mr Saleam said they are different to the Australian Liberty Alliance or independent conservative candidate Marcus Cornish, despite admitting it will be hard to differentiate their messages in the public campaign.

Mr Saleam could not confirm who he would preference on his how to vote card, but guaranteed that nowhere in Australia will the AFP preference a sitting member.

To narrow it down further, he didn’t speak fondly of Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish, and said there was no difference between the Liberal and Labor parties.

Mr Saleam flatly denies any wrongdoing in offences he served jail time for, including property offences and fraud in 1984, and of organising a shotgun attack on an African Congressman in 1989.

“I’m a nationalist politician, I have been around for a long time. I fight the system and the system fights me,” he said.

“Locking me up is just another day in the zoo, it means nothing to me. I am proud they sent me to jail.”

Mixed response to child care plan

lenmore Park resident Ashley Stasiuk is yet to be convinced by Labor’s child care announcement last Sunday that will see an increase to the child care rebate cap brought forward to January 2017.

The 30-year-old mother of two, Isaac, 3, and Kobie, 1, said even with a child care rebate, the cost of fees is not worth going back to work.

“Rebates are all well and good, but once you hit the cap you can’t afford it. I’ve considered putting the boys into preschool, but it’s still going to cost $100 a day for each child,” she said.

“We aren’t on a heap of money. My husband is a builder, so we don’t always get solid work, and if the industry is slow we have to make do.”

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said under Labor’s plan, families who do rely on child care will get “a better deal now”.

“Labor recognises that families need action and support now – they should not have to wait any longer,” Mr Shorten said.

Under the plan, over 800,000 families on the Child Care Benefit Scheme will see an increase, with low and middle income families receiving a 15 per cent increase.

Ms Husar told the Weekender she snapped her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and tore her medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her knee while playing a game of basketball last Wednesday.

“I twisted my entire knee like a bottle cap,” she said.

She was immediately taken to Nepean Hospital in an ambulance after the accident at Penrith Sports Stadium, where she stayed for several hours for treatment.

While the crutches and a brace may have slowed her down a bit, Ms Husar’s media spokesperson ensures she is still putting one foot in front of the other towards the July 2 election.

“The very next day, Emma was back on the campaign trail,” he said.

Ms Husar has a real passion for basketball and has been playing for 28 years.

She is looking forward to playing basketball after her recovery.

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott said the Labor Party needs to properly explain how they are going to fund programs they ‘think’ they are going to be able to run.

“It seems to be that they are just going to chuck it on the national credit card, and that’s not going to help,” she said.

Mr Shorten said the announcement is made within the same funding envelope as the Turnbull Government’s.

“Labor has supported $9 billion in social services and child care savings – more than three times what is needed to cover increases in child care investment,” he said.

Coalition best for business, says O’Dwyer DALE DRINKWATER

afe Fred is one of 13,000 small businesses in Lindsay that will benefit from tax changes announced in the Federal Budget, according to Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Small Business Kelly O’Dwyer.

Ms O’Dwyer spoke exclusively with the Weekender at the cafe ahead of a local small business event on Tuesday.

“Those small businesses under a re-elected Turnbull Government will get a company tax cut and unincorporated entities will get a tax discount and be able to invest in their business,” she said.

“If they are a cafe, they can get a new coffee machine, cash register, furniture – as long as it’s up to $20,000 they can instantly write it off.”

Ms O’Dwyer said the focus on small business is to allow the five million of them across the country the ability to employ more people and grow their business.

“We want to allow small businesses the flexibility to grow from where they are, and they can grow from Penrith,” Ms O’Dwyer said.

“We are providing access to new markets with free trade agreements, and that’s particularly good for small to medium enterprises when they are looking to sell their product overseas.”

“We are looking at expanding into catering under the same name, and tax incentives will help us employ more people,” she said.

Ms Galloway said the increase of the small business threshold from $2 million

in turnover to $10 million means even her future larger business can benefit.

Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott said boosting small business in western Sydney will help bring local jobs and stop 70 per cent of the working community leaving the area to work.

“Having a competitive company tax rate to ensure that big business does think Penrith is a place to do business, and our

small businesses become medium businesses, and medium business become big businesses is a ‘whole of economy’ plan,” she said.

“Nowhere else do you see the transition from the mining boom into a new diversified economy than you do here in western Sydney.”

Councils like ours have an obligation to cater for Sydney’s growing population – we’ve got the land and this growth boosts our local economy, creating work in retail, services, hospitality and trades.

But successive governments have failed to provide the infrastructure these growing communities need – specifically roads, public transport and health.

We’re pleased that the Federal and State governments are upgrading The Northern Road ahead of the airport opening but Mulgoa Road needs an upgrade now.

Whether it’s the morning or afternoon peak hours, Saturday mornings or Panthers home game day – Mulgoa Road turns into a car park. For people trying to get onto the M4 or into Penrith’s city centre, it’s ridiculous that it can take half an hour to travel a few kilometres.

As one of only two main access points from Penrith to the M4, Mulgoa/ Castlereagh Road is one of Penrith’s busiest roads. It carries up to 3,800 vehicles every hour during morning and afternoon peak periods, and almost

50,000 vehicles daily.

The feedback from my recent video on Facebook calling for the community to support our campaign has been incredible.

Residents are telling us they are rearranging their work/life schedules to avoid the major peak times along Mulgoa and Castlereagh Roads to get to work on time, pick the kids up from school, do the shopping or to enjoy time with their family.

In 2015, the Federal and NSW government committed $5 million to planning for a future upgrade along the Mulgoa Road and Castlereagh Road corridor, to support current and future traffic needs and expected growth in the region.

Widening Mulgoa Road cannot come soon enough for people stuck in traffic trying to get from one side of our city to the other.

Drunk man fell asleep on stranger’s couch

A local magistrate has warned a Glenmore Park man to “stay off the grog” after he mistakenly entered a neighbour’s home drunk and fell asleep on their couch.

Dean Whitehead, 18, fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with resist police, assault police and trespass after a day-long drinking session at the Kingswood Hotel on ANZAC Day turned pear-shaped.

The court heard Mr Whitehead was “paralytic drunk” when he returned home to his brother’s house in Kingswood and let himself into the unlocked unit next-door.

When the stunned occupants tried to rouse him, he swore at them thinking it was his brother.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said it was clear the accused couldn’t hold his liquor and suggested he give it up.

“You’re obviously not a good drunk,” he said. “You were so sozzled you go into the wrong residence.”

Mr Whitehead’s lawyer claimed his client was embarrassed by his behaviour and noted he lost a tooth in the police scuffle.

Magistrate Clisdell said losing an incisor was a “small price to pay” compared to the injuries he would have likely sustained if he got into a fight with three cops 40 years ago.

“I’ll empty his pockets for a few months,” he said.

He was fined $1,000 for resisting police, ordered to enter into a 12-month good behaviour bond for the assault charge, while the trespass charge was dismissed.

Man warned about his ongoing drug use

Dale Edward Pearson has been fined $500 for cannabis possession.

Magistrate Gary Still cautioned Mr Pearson about his ongoing drug use when he faced Penrith Local Court on Monday.

“Last time you were dealt with by a fine,” he said. “If you come back again the penalties will definitely go up.”

Man adds to his woes by being late for court

Magistrate McGlynn said it was only Mr Ali’s clean record that allowed him to avoid jail.

He was placed on two lengthy good behaviour bonds and fined $2,700.

James Vernon has been fined $1,000 for cultivating a prohibited plant.

A flustered Mr Vernon burst into Penrith Local Court on Monday afternoon, clearly late for court.

“Is this our horticulturist?” Magistrate Roger Clisdell asked his court officer.

“Don’t grow it again,” His Honour warned after advising Mr Vernon he had already dealt with his matter in his absence.

“Don’t be late next time. I might issue a warrant.”

Man escapes jail despite disgusting behaviour

A Cranebrook woman who slapped her older brother after he allegedly spread vicious rumours about her has had her court case thrown out.

Magistrate Margaret McGlynn conceded there were “better ways” for Kylee Simpson, 37, to deal with her brother when he was being difficult, but determined the mother-of-two deserved a “great deal of credit” for her unblemished criminal history.

She said Ms Simpson’s brother made it clear to police that he did not fear his sister and dismissed the court attendance notice.

A man who became infatuated with a woman and would phone her with lewd and unwelcome suggestions has narrowly escaped jail.

Saiyaid Ali, 34, fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass and offend, and intimidation.

The court heard Mr Ali, a married father-of-three, would fantasize about his victim who he first met at Woolworths.

After overhearing her phone number he began calling her and even “came across” where she was living when out jogging in Glenmore Park.

Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said she found it hard to accept Mr Ali was naive enough to think his “appalling” suggestions, which included asking the victim if she wanted her “titties sucked and things like that”, could be met with anything other than horror.

“It’s breathtakingly obvious it was inappropriate behaviour,” she said in response to a tendered psychologist’s report, which concluded Mr Ali was unlikely to re-offend but needed to show greater respect for women.

A man who pleaded guilty to driving with illicit drugs in his blood has been stripped of his licence for four months.

Travis Houston told Penrith Local Court on Monday he thought he was fine to drive.

“I didn’t think I’d still have it in my system, but apparently I did,” he said.

He was convicted and fined $800.

Woman who slapped brother has case thrown out of court

P-plater had 16 beers before getting behind the wheel

A heavily intoxicated man who drove through a red light into oncoming traffic has walked away from court with a ninemonth suspended sentence.

Karlen Bell, 25, fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with highrange drink driving.

The court heard the P-plater consumed about 16 bottles of beer between 4pm and midnight on March 12 before making the reckless decision to drive his drinking partner home.

Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said Mr Bell was unimpressively only one lowrange drink driving charge away from racking up the “whole swag” of drink driving offences, noting he had previously been before the court for novice and mid-range PCA. “Mr Bell, this is your third drink driving offence,” Magistrate McGlynn said.

“You’re a danger to members of the community… I am satisfied no penalty other than imprisonment is appropriate.”

He was disqualified from driving for nine months and ordered to fit a mandatory interlock device to his car for a period of four years.

Man warned not to get into trouble again

Leonard Mark Wiggins will serve a sixmonth prison sentence in the community after he was deemed suitable for an intensive correction order.

Mr Wiggins was sentenced for a string of offences, including multiple counts of damage property, two counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, at Penrith Local Court on Monday.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell advised Mr Wiggins he faced possible jail time if he breached the order.

“It’s a good idea not to get back into trouble during that period of time,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

He was directed to undertake 32 hours of community service work a month and ordered to enter into a number of 18-month good behaviour bonds.

$500 fine after man was caught with cannabis

Alex McGovern has been slugged with a $500 fine for cannabis possession.

Mr McGovern fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with possessing a prohibited drug.

Magistrate Gary Still noted the defendant was on a good behaviour bond, but decided not to take any action on it.

Cambridge Park: Stop sign proves driver’s undoing

A man should have thought twice before running a stop sign in front of police.

At about 11.00pm on Monday, May 30, police were patrolling Dunheved Road, Cambridge Park, when they allegedly saw a motor vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign.

Police stopped the vehicle in relation to the offence and spoke with the driver, a 21-year-old Cambridge Park man.

It is alleged checks on the man’s driver’s licence confirmed that he had never held a licence in any state or territory in Australia.

He was issued with a court attendance notice for ‘never licensed person drive vehicle on road’ and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, June 21.

Werrington: Heavy penalty for forgetting P-plates

A woman was given an infringement notice for not displaying any P-plates on her vehicle.

At about 10.20am on Tuesday, May 31, police were patrolling Christie Street, Werrington, when they had cause to stop a motor vehicle.

They spoke to the 26-year-old driver.

It is alleged she was asked to produce her licence with checks subsequently revealing that the woman held a “P1” or red P-plate driver’s licence.

Checks were made of the vehicle and at the time there were no P-plates being displayed on her vehicle.

She was issued with an infringement notice for ‘not comply with P1 licence – no P-plates’.

Colyton: Two people charged following vehicle stop

At about 3.25pm on Wednesday, June 1, police were on the Great Western Highway, Colyton, when they stopped a vehicle and spoke with the driver.

It’s alleged the 61-year-old Jamisontown man held a disqualified licence.

He was charged with ‘drive motor vehicle during disqualification period’.

It is also alleged the owner of the motor vehicle, a 61-year-old Jamisontown woman, was sitting in the passengers seat of the vehicle at the time it was stopped.

She was spoken to by police and she was subsequently charged with ‘drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – aid and/or abet an offence’.

North St Marys: Suspended, no registration, no insurance

At about 5.05pm on Friday, June 3, police were on Boronia Road, North St Marys. It is alleged they saw a vehicle and had cause to stop it.

Checks of the 44-year-old Colyton driver revealed that she was a suspended driver.

It’s understood she was unaware of her suspension and was issued with a suspension notice.

Further checks of the vehicle that she was driving revealed that it was not registered and not insured.

She was issued a range of infringement notices as a result.

Her fines totalled $2548.

Local police want to find this man Police are looking for a man who may be able to assist with inquiries following a theft and malicious damage incident that took place in Cambridge Park in February.

Appealing a licence suspension If you have received a letter from Roads & Maritime Services indicating that your licence has been suspended due to the accrual of too many demerit points you can appeal this decision.

To do this you need to follow the instructions on the back of the letter you receive from the RMS to lodge your appeal online. You will then be allocated a Court date in a Local Court.

We have set out below the things that you will need to demonstrate to the Court to prove that you are a fit and proper person to hold a driving licence.

It is important to remember that if you do lodge an appeal you are allowed to continue to drive until such a time that your appeal is heard.

In preparing for your appeal you should consider the following: 1. Completing a “Traffic Offender’s Program”. Courts tend to look kindly on people who voluntarily educate themselves as to the dangers of their offending.

2. A reference demonstrating your good character.

3. Evidence of any flow on effects of your loss of licence, for example if

your loss of licence will lead to a loss of employment then a letter from your employer indicating that this is the case may assist.

4. In some circumstances a letter from you addressed to the Magistrate can assist in demonstrating what you have learned and the price you have paid in relation to the offence and the prospect of losing your licence.

It will also be necessary for you to demonstrate to the Court whether you have a need for a licence, whether you are a person who completes any community work, whether any other person is dependent on you to transport them and your status in relation to employment or study.

You will receive one of three results as a result of an appeal against your suspension: 1. The appeal will be allowed and you will not have to serve a suspension.

2. The appeal will be dismissed but the Magistrate will reduce your period of suspension.

3. Your appeal will be dismissed and you will have to serve your entire suspension.

Do you use your mobile phone while driving?

ne in four motor vehicle accidents are caused by a distraction, with mobile phone use behind the wheel one of the top issues.

Talking and texting on a mobile phone that is not secured by a cradle is considered so much of a distraction that, from early this year, using a mobile phone while driving was included in double demerit point periods in a bid to encourage people to put the phone down.

Several studies have shown that using a mobile phone can increase the risk of a collision by four times.

Crash data from 2010 to 2014 showed there were 236 crashes where hand-held mobile phone use by drivers was identified as a contributing factor, including seven fatal crashes and 116 injury crashes.

From July 2014 to June 2015, more than 35,300 fines were issued to NSW drivers for using hand-held mobile phones, showing the problem is still prevalent.

Several successful campaigns have been created including ‘Get Your Hand Off It’ and ‘Are You Driving Blind’, which highlights the metres you travel when taking your eyes off of the road for two seconds.

The Weekender took to the streets of Penrith last week to find out if people still use their mobile phone while driving, despite the dangers of doing so.

ccording to former Penrith Mayor Pat Sheehy, making changes to superannuation policy is like shifting the goal posts halfway through a game.

“You have a plan of what you’re going to do, and the government makes changes – how is anybody supposed to plan?” he asked.

“That’s the problem, they keep talking about having a plan, but putting away superannuation is all based on the fact that things remain the way they are.”

Among many rule changes announced last month was a new limit to after-tax voluntary superannuation contributions, known as non-concessional contributions.

These include money you’ve already paid tax on, like extra contributions from your PAYG salary or profit from selling a property you’ve already paid capital gains tax on.

From July 1, 2017, these contributions will be limited to a $500,000 lifetime cap, as opposed to the current ‘generous’ $180,000 yearly cap, and will include all after-tax contributions from July 2007 onwards.

The plan would penalise those who continue to contribute over the $500,000 cap through a tax, generating over $550 million in revenue over four years.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has defended the superannuation changes, saying it creates a fairer and more flexible system, with people on “very high incomes” those the hardest hit.

olice have launched an investigation following two separate incidents, including an aggravated robbery and a home invasion in St Marys early on Sunday morning.

At about 2am on Sunday, June 5, a 27-year-old woman was leaving a club

on the Great Western Highway, St Marys, before entering her vehicle parked nearby.

Police have been told an unknown man approached the vehicle, opened the car door, and threatened the 27-year-old with a firearm. The woman resisted, and the man fled the scene with the woman’s wallet, keys and mobile phone.

At about 3.10am the same morning, a 44-year-old woman was in her home on

Saddington Street, St Marys, when an unknown man broke into her home and assaulted her with a hammer, causing facial and torso injuries.

Police from St Marys Local Area Command attended both incidents and crime scenes were established.

The 44-year-old woman was taken to Nepean Hospital for further treatment.

Investigations are continuing.

Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish’s decision to contest the Federal seat of Lindsay at the upcoming elections as an Independent must be sending shivers up Fiona Scott’s spine. Marcus has always shown himself to be his own man even though he has been identified as belonging to the right faction of the Liberal Party prior to his recent resignation from the party. Private higher education and training delivers jobs and growth in cities, towns and rural communities across Australia, and provides nationally accredited and portable qualifications that help grow our economy. However, vocational education and training in particular is under threat from reactionary policy changes that punish quality private providers, their students and industry. Suggestions of at least 70 per cent of public funding directed to Government-run TAFEs, an arbitrary cap on student training loans and government choosing which courses will be funded, and at what price, can only lead to more public policy failure in our training system. Students must be able to choose the course they want and the provider they want to deliver it. As the temperature cools, we begin to reassess items in our cupboards and around the home that we don’t need anymore, but our good intentions can have huge negative impacts for our local op-shops.

St Vincent de Paul Society’s Retail Operations Manager, Phillip Basti, said there is an exorbitant cost to dispose of the one fifth of items they receive that are deemed unusable.

“Our sorting and recycling centre in Kingswood processes approximately 700,000kg of donated clothing per annum... approximately 20 per cent represent items that are totally unusable,” he said.

Mr Basti said a greater concern is the dumping of general rubbish in front of their shops and around donation bins, that costs them more than $200,000 a year to clean up in western Sydney alone.

“These items can include broken furniture, building waste, soiled mattresses, car tyres and even dead animals. The good donations left around donation bins are often stolen,” he said.

nly 50 per cent of Penrith women are receiving regular cervical cancer screenings (pap test) with experts encouraging more women to get the test done.

One of the doctors at Family Planning Penrith, Margaret Stellingwerff, said the low number of women receiving the test is concerning.

“It’s such an important test because women that are regularly screened are very unlikely to develop cervical cancer,” she said.

“It picks up very early changes on the cervix that might lead to cancer – it’s a fantastic test.”

Last year Family Planning NSW Penrith provided 4,403 occasions of clinical service to 2,133 clients, including 808 pap tests.

Ms Stellingwerff said more often than not, women usually cope really well during the test.

“Consider having it done – it’s a worthwhile appointment to make and your local doctor can help you or you can visit us,” she said.

NSW Environment Minister, Mark Speakman, said the dumping of unusable goods outside charities is illegal and costs millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours a year.

“The cost alone of getting rid of this rubbish is up to $7 million a year,” Mr Speakman said.

She is now working part-time as an interior designer while she completes her Advanced Diploma.

Cranebrook resident Mr Koots studied a Certificate III in Engineering and Technical at Mt Druitt College, and scored Student of the Year in Manufacturing and Engineering.

Since learning to arc weld at nineyears-old, Mr Koots was an engineer in the making, and managed to complete a certificate and commence a diploma during his apprenticeship term.

“I originally had plans to study engineering at university, but with my life long love of pulling apart anything mechanical and my father’s trade background, I decided to go with the hands-on approach first,” he said.

Ms McFarlane, a Glenmore Park local,

won the Apprentice of the Year for Hairdressing and Beauty through her Certificate III in Hairdressing studies at the Nepean College.

“Hairdressing has been a passion of mine from a young age and I love learning different techniques,” she said.

Ms McFarlane was commended for her high ethical standards that inspired teachers and students alike, and exceeding her teachers’ expectations, producing work of an exceptional standard.

uperintendents across four police Local Area Commands (LAC) came together at Nepean Donor Centre last week to donate blood as part of the Emergency Services Challenge for 2016.

Superintendents Greg Peters from St Marys LAC, Brett McFadden from Penrith LAC, Darryl Jobson from Blue Mountains LAC and Steve Egginton from Hawkesbury LAC all donated blood last Wednesday, June 1, ahead of an expected shortfall in blood donors throughout the winter months.

Superintendent Peters from St Marys LAC said donating blood is a worthwhile cause.

“I donate blood regularly, having donated over 100 times, because I think it is really important to do, especially when one donation can potentially save three lives,” he said.

“People, whether they are emergency services personnel or members of the public, should definitely do it – it doesn’t take long and the staff at the centres are fantastic.”

Heritage status for famous bridge Penrith’s Victoria Bridge, which is one of Australia’s oldest metal bridges, has been given state heritage status and protection, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Heritage Minister Mark Speakman announced this week.

The bridge was listed on the State Heritage Register for its link to opening the

earlier this year at Nepean Hospital and sustained very heavy blood loss, was also at the centre to support the men during their donations.

Blood Service spokesperson, Brenda Armstrong, said the hope is for emergency service personnel to inspire others to donate.

“Winter is always a difficult time for blood donations because you need to be feeling 100 per cent well to donate,” she said.

“We’re concerned the flu season combined with the long weekend, when many donors are away, could result in a drop in donations.

“Patients fighting cancer, infections and blood diseases are relying on donated blood to keep them healthy throughout winter.”

The Emergency Services Challenge finishes on Wednesday, August 31, and is part of the Blood Service’s Red25 program, a unique giving program uniting with groups and organisations around Australia to save lives through blood donation.

fter losing her baby girl in April this year, Jamisontown resident Megan Dunlop is hoping a fundraiser will give her the opportunity to purchase her daughter a final resting place.

Ms Dunlop brought Destiny Pearl Wise into the world on April 15, 2016.

She was alive for just 18-and-a-half hours before she passed away due to Hydrops – where the fetus is characterised by an accumulation of fluid.

Ms Dunlop and her partner, Craig, now want to say a proper goodbye to their baby girl.

Not only are they raising funds for their daughter’s funeral but they are also hoping to raise money to donate to Bears of Hope, a pregnancy and infant loss organisation that provides support to families and also gifts them a bear with another child’s name on it who has also passed away.

“We do feel very strongly about wanting to donate to Bears of Hope as the support they have given us has been so amazing and they help so many other families,” Ms Dunlop said.

Temporary lane closure on the Great Western Highway, Claremont Meadows from Tuesday 14 June Roads and Maritime Services is continuing to deliver this important project as part of the $70 million upgrade of Werrington Arterial Road.

Work will be carried out to upgrade the Great Western Highway and Gipps Street intersection. This work requires a temporary closure of one eastbound lane on the Great Western Highway for around 400 metres near the intersection with Gipps Street.

enrith Council has given away thousands of trees and shrubs to local families in a bid to help make the city cooler and more liveable for our growing population.

The work is being done as part of the One Tree Per Child program, developed by former Australian of the Year Jon Dee and Olivia Newton-John, co-founders of National Tree Day. Children at Emu Plains Kids Place were some of the first in the area to receive their trees and shrubs last month.

“The aim of One Tree Per Child is to enable as many children as possible to plant a tree and to see it grow in their town or city,” Mr Dee said.

Selected Council-run child care centres in the area are involved in the pilot program, and have received trees to plant in their grounds for their children.

Their families have also received seedlings to take home, and their children will be engaged with lessons and activities linked to the child care curriculum.

“When young children get out, get their hands in the earth, and plant trees, Penrith benefits from that,” Ms NewtonJohn said.

Competing in the upcoming AusGroom competition, Ms Moffat won her first award in 2014 during her first competition for turning her standard poodle into popular children’s character ‘Shaun the Sheep’.

“I’m a bit nervous about the upcoming competition as it’s not as creative as my last one,” Ms Moffat told the Weekender.

The Werrington County local will compete in three categories – ‘Salon Freestyle’, ‘Purebred Scissor Class’ and ‘Poodle’.

With a more refined set of standards to adhere to, Ms Moffat said she is looking forward to the challenge.

“Creativity does come more easily to me despite people saying it would be a lot harder than standard regulations, but I’ll see how I go; I’m up for the challenge,” she said.

Having started out as a vet nurse, Ms Moffat has run her dog grooming business for the past seven years and said she can’t imagine doing anything else.

epean Hospital and Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District staff have collected hundreds of bras to donate to the Uplift Project.

The project aims to provide new and second-hand bras to women in disadvantaged communities, where it is often unattainable or not affordable to purchase them.

Nepean Hospital Operations Nurse Manager, Zena Wilson, said she has been overwhelmed by the response from staff to the annual collection at the hospital.

“We’ve got over 200 bras that have been donated by staff,” she said.

“We do this every year and people are

just so generous at Nepean Hospital; they give, give and give to the community.”

The health implications of not wearing a bra can include infections or abscesses that form between the breast and chest wall, with bras allowing air circulation, controlled breast swing and also allow nursing mums to have a dry shirt.

Since 2005, Uplift has sent over one million bras to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the Philippines among other countries.

“There are lots of women that get really sore or experience a lot of back pain without a bra and our donation will help them in many ways,” Ms Wilson said.

hether you work from home or in a more traditional workplace, there are distractions everywhere.

Some of those distractions are unrelated to work – chatting with co-workers about your weekend, losing yourself on social media, etc. But other distractions can be work tasks that you know you really shouldn’t be spending your time on.

When most of us started out in business, we wore many hats. But if you were smart, you soon realised that you couldn’t progress your business if you were trying to do everything.

It is important to focus on what you’re good at and let others do the rest.

Accept your weaknesses so that you can leverage your strengths. That is, let someone else do what you cannot, so that you can focus your time, abilities and resources on what you do best.

Being focused can also have a lot to do with your physical environment.

Some people work well at a desk with no one else around. Others need the stimulus of other people and an environment where ideas can be bounced

off others. And other people need a variety of workspaces to stimulate ideas and their most productive work.

Although this might seem like the antithesis of being focused, sometimes breaking the routine and letting your mind wander can be what your brain needs.

Allow yourself to become an occasional daydreamer, as you may just find that it sparks creative ideas and innovations you would not think of in the course of your usual day.

This also gives your brain a break from trying to stay constantly focused, and you are more likely to be able to re-focus on tasks at hand.

This is a really great quote by Leo Babauta (Zen Habits): “Everything seems important. But when we step back and think about what matters most, what will make the most difference in the world and in our lives, we can see what we need to focus on, to make time for. We can’t step back unless we’re aware that we’re getting caught up in less important tasks.”

see business owners for advice on all different areas of operation but the real truth lies in the numbers.

For the next couple of weeks I will be going through how to ‘know your numbers’, including ratios and other important parts of your financials. For now, let’s start with the key areas of financial analysis: Revenue: It is your business’ main source of cash. The quantity, quality and timing of revenues can determine long-term success. If a single customer generates a high percentage of your revenues, you could face financial difficulty if that customer decides to buy from somewhere else. No client should represent more than 10 per cent of your total revenues.

Profits: If you can’t produce quality profits consistently, your business may not survive in the long run. A healthy gross profit margin allows you to absorb shocks to revenues or cost of goods sold without losing the ability to pay for ongoing expenses. Same too with operating expenses which determine your business’ ability to make a profit.

Operational efficiency: Operational efficiency measures how well you’re using the business’ resources. A lack of operational efficiency leads to smaller profits and weaker growth.

Capital efficiency and solvency: This area is mainly of interest to lenders and investors. It includes the return investors are generating from your business and how much leverage you’re using to operate. Leverage should not exceed what is reasonable for your business.

Liquidity: Addresses your ability to generate sufficient cash to cover cash expenses.

Benchmarking and comparisons: It is important to determine if performance is aligned with appropriate benchmarks.

The past three years of performance is sufficient. Looking at your past and present financial condition also helps you spot trends. Your direct competitors can also provide an important reality check. Having revenue growth of 10 per cent annually may sound good, but if competitors are growing at 25 per cent, it highlights underperformance.

Turning back Time

Inset: Newspaper coverage of the beer crisis In our June 12, 2015 edition of the Weekender, we recognised the long years of service by then Panthers Group CEO Warren Wilson, who was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen’s Birthday 2015 Honours List.

Two more men were also honoured among the 717 Australians, a local General Practitioner Dr Shiva Prakash and auditor Bruce Turner, who have both been working in the local community since 1971.

‘Ice’ was already an epidemic, and we spoke with a former ‘ice’ addict who was pleading for people to take charge to combat the drug that was slowly taking over the community.

Former PM Tony Abbott cemented Lindsay’s importance as an economic corridor, and visited the region to convince our local businesses to strive to trade internationally.

In our history section we looked back at when the Museum of Fire was a major power station.

The Penrith Panthers set a new record when they hit 17,000 memberships.

And as the temperature dropped for the winter months, Penrith played host to a battle between Melbourne and the Sydney Bears in the Australian Ice Hockey League.

Penrith’s great beer crisis

T

he almighty beer – an Aussie icon, a pastime and a man’s best friend.

The State Government’s stance on alcohol consumption was vastly different in 1979 than it is today.

Unlike today’s 1.30am lockouts and 3am last drinks in Sydney to crack down on violence, politics 35 years ago stood in defence of alcohol consumption.

In July 1979, the government launched an investigation into what they called ‘the shrinking middy and schooner’.

The probe came after allegations to one local newspaper that some clubs and hotels in western Sydney, including Penrith, were shortchanging customers by

selling small beers in odd shaped glasses.

The Minister for Consumer affairs at the time, Mr Sid Enfield, assured the newspaper that he would look deeply into the increasingly shallow beverage.

He found the issues around the shrinking middy and schooner was a result of a “mixed bag” of glasses and glass sizes across pubs, clubs and hotels after the introduction of the metric system two years earlier.

The newspaper surveyed local hotels and found that one licensee said drinkers at the club thought they were saving money when they were charged less for their beers. However, to their surprise, they were actually being served their beer in smaller glasses.

Patrons were being served 13oz (369ml)

beers they thought were schooners, and 9oz (255ml) beers that were labelled middies, losing 2oz (56ml) on a schooner and 1oz (28ml) on a middy.

Barry McInerney from the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) said the only way Penrith beer drinkers could ensure their money’s worth of alcohol was by drinking beers at bars where AHA badged glasses were used.

20 years before the issue arose in western Sydney, the AHA glasses begun to be labelled to ensure customers were getting the correct amount of liquor and so publicans could not be prosecuted.

I

f you look hard enough you can see the similarities between Panthers coach Anthony Griffin and country music crooner Kenny Rogers.

And this week Griffin very much became ‘The Gambler’ when he dumped halfback Jamie Soward to reserve grade, naming Bryce Cartwright and teenager Nathan Cleary in the halves for this Sunday’s game against Manly at Brookvale Oval.

Ironically, the ‘spine’ (1, 6, 7 and 9) that fans craved to see on the field so much over the past two years is fully available for selection this weekend, but only 50 per cent of them will be playing first grade.

Even then, Peter Wallace is out of his favoured position, leaving Matt Moylan as the only survivor of the preferred spine.

Nobody can question the intent of

Griffin’s decisions in the past two weeks.

He clearly believes that James Segeyaro and Soward need time in reserve grade to fix whatever issues he feels can’t be addressed while maintaining their spots in the top grade.

But with the finals still a very real possibility for the Panthers this year, it is an almighty gamble by the quietly-spoken leader of the club.

Soward’s form may have been inconsistent at times this season, but his kicking game and experience can win you matches. He’s been forced to play with five separate halves partners and is now the fall guy for Penrith’s recent losses.

Griffin’s solution is to move Cartwright, who is still finding his way in the NRL, to five-eighth while 18-year-old Cleary will partner him at halfback.

The Panthers simply must beat Manly on Sunday and while the Sea Eagles will struggle to field a decent side after being decimated by injury, the fact that Penrith will start with one of the most inexperi-

enced halves combinations in the NRL is enough to give the home side a sniff.

The Panthers are at risk of becoming the under-achievers of the NRL this year.

On paper, they should be a premiership threat. Their last two games however have exposed significant vulnerabilities in the side’s attack, structure and defence particularly on the left hand side of the field.

Losing to Melbourne at AAMI Park is nothing to be ashamed of but the Panthers seemed to offer little resistance to Melbourne’s game plan of tearing through Penrith’s middle.

Starting props Sam McKendry and Reagan Campbell-Gillard struggled to make 100 metres between them, with Trent Merrin the only forward who really stood up for Penrith, clocking up 149 metres from 17 runs during his 68 minutes on the field.

McKendry is missing from this weekend’s team line-up due to a suspension for a shoulder charge late in the game.

TOXIC RELATIONSHIP » Club insiders have described to me

the relationship between Panthers coach Anthony Griffin and unwanted hooker James Segeyaro as “toxic”. Segeyaro has again been left out of the first grade side for this Sunday’s game against Manly, and was a late withdrawal from reserve grade last weekend due to a groin strain.

When asked about his relationship with Griffin by Seven News, Segeyaro cheekily said: “He’s good at home. He cooks, I wash up”. Segeyaro appears uninterested to address his issues at Penrith in a professional manner, and it would appear certain he won’t be back in first grade and could be gone from the NRL by the end of the month.

» Sam McKendry will miss this Sunday’s

game against Manly and the upcoming match against South Sydney after being suspended for a shoulder charge following last week’s game against Melbourne.

McKendry took the early guilty plea, unwilling to risk a three game suspension by fighting the charge at the judiciary. The incident involving a hit on Cameron Munster happened in the 78th minute of the game. While the prop forward’s suspension is disappointing, Panthers fans and officials were left scratching their heads after Marika Koroibete wasn’t penalised or charged following a clear shoulder charge on Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in the same game. The NRL’s inconsistency has reared its head again.

t’s been a rollercoaster past few months for new Panthers recruit Chris Grevsmuhl, who says he’s happy to have found a new home at Penrith after an ugly fallout at South Sydney.

Late last year the 23-year-old future Queensland Origin star agreed to a deal to leave the Rabbitohs and join the Panthers for the 2017 season.

However things between Grevsmuhl and Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire turned nasty last month, resulting in the promising second-rower to ask for an immediate release to join Penrith.

Fortunately for Grevsmuhl, Rabbitohs officials didn’t stand in his way and he was able to join his new teammates six months earlier than originally planned.

“The plan wasn’t to leave Souths early, I was enjoying my football where I was at,” Grevsmuhl told Extra Time.

“Then, before it came out in the media, things started

to blow up [at Souths]. I believe I made the right decision for myself, my family and my partner to look elsewhere. I just wasn’t enjoying it, and it was impacting on my life and everything.”

Grevsmuhl arrived at Penrith before the club’s Round 12 bye and made his Panthers debut during last Saturday night’s loss to the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park.

After enjoying an excellent debut season at South Sydney last year, which resulted in him winning the club’s Rookie of the Year Award, Grevsmuhl revealed he decided to make the move out west because of Penrith’s bright future under coach Anthony Griffin.

“I have a heap of mates at the Broncos who were trained

by Hook and I felt like I already knew him,” he said.

“Hook’s a great coach and he’s done some wonderful things with the teams he’s had in the past.”

It also hasn’t taken long for the 2015 Indigenous All Star to get ‘chummy’ with his new teammates, who have all welcomed Grevsmuhl with open arms.

“Big Trent Merrin, him and I have hit it off like a house on fire. We all hang out together, it’s like a big family,” he said.

anthers captain Matt Moylan believes Anthony Griffin’s tough love strategy of dropping star players and changing the make-up of the team each week shouldn’t have an effect on the side’s cohesion.

Experienced five-eighth Jamie Soward was the latest big name to get cut this week following hooker James Segeyaro’s demotion last round.

The high profile pair haven’t been the only star causalities of Griffin’s axe this season with Tyrone Peachey, Jeremy Latimore, Sam McKendry and Elijah Taylor all having stints in reserve grade.

Griffin’s tough love approach of dropping players is refreshing and is a way of

igniting players who should be performing better than they are.

Moylan said the chopping and changing of the first grade line-up each game cannot be used as an excuse.

“We train as a big squad for most of the time anyway, so we can’t use that as an excuse,” he told Extra Time.

“I think everyone that comes in has brought energy and enthusiasm, and I think they’ve stepped into their role very well.”

The Panthers fullback made special mention of recent debutant Nathan Cleary, who came into the side during last week’s loss to the Storm in Melbourne.

Moylan was impressed with the way the 18-year-old handled his NRL debut.

“Nathan, on the weekend, was impressive in his first game and took a lot of control out there, which was good to see from a young half,” he said.

It was a tough night in Melbourne last weekend but it was fantastic to see Nathan Cleary make his NRL debut.

At just 18 years of age Nathan is now a member of the full time Panthers NRL squad and will play a key role in the remainder of our 2016 season.

This is quite an achievement for the young man.

Nathan is yet another success story emerging from our junior development pathways.

He first entered the Panthers Playmakers Academy in 2011, progressed through the junior grades at the club and forced his way into the premiership-winning NYC side last season.

Panthers fans should be delighted to know Nathan has committed himself to the Panthers until at least the end of the 2019 season – so the best is yet to come!

If you’ve visited Panthers Leagues Club recently you will have noticed the Panther Shop has relocated back to the

main foyer. It’s impossible to miss the giant Matt Moylan and Bryce Cartwright on the wall! The new setup makes it even easier to get your hands on your favourite Panthers merchandise and we’ve sweetened the deal with some great in-store specials.

Finally I want to acknowledge the hard work of Brad Waugh and his dedicated team at Panthers on the Prowl. The Property Central office was absolutely buzzing after hearing the news of Nathan Cleary making his first grade debut. Bec Cleary certainly kept that little piece of news quiet and may explain why she was not seen in the office all week.

Although it was a tough first-up assignment for Nathan, up against a well oiled machine in the Melbourne Storm, it is an outstanding achievement for Nathan to be selected at such a young age and also an incredibly proud moment for his family.

The Property Central team are proud rugby league supporters, with a mixture of personalities and opinions.

We have ex-first grade referee Phil Haines whose opinion on rugby league holds no weight whatsoever! Lee Waterhouse thinks he knows a bit about the game because of his famous brother Trent Waterhouse. Paul Wallace is totally off the Panthers and Gus Gould after being cut while trying out for the Penrith

under 21’s side. He almost qualifies for the DEP club! (Disgruntled Ex-Panther).

David Moore the flying centre 3/4 from Emu Plains is a great bloke, but unfortunately supports the Dogs and Alan Harding one of the toughest to lace on a boot for Emu Plains.

This just leaves the outcast in the office, yes you guessed it, Cameron Faico!

Our little red headed mate proudly supports the most hated team ever in the NRL, the Manly Sea Eagles.

Logic does not apply when discussing the fortunes of the Sea Eagles with Cameron.

At the beginning of the year he was convinced that Manly were a top four team.

Well all I can say is that I have offered Cameron a cash out now option for not making the top eight, which he has declined and still believes his side can play semi final football. I look forward to collecting in September.

TRANSPARENCY IS CRUCIAL TROY DODDS @troydodds

T

he word ‘scandal’ is no stranger in the world of rugby league.

Almost since its beginnings in 1908, the state’s number one sport has had its fair share of player behaviour issues, dramas with drugs and of course internal wars that tore friendships to shreds.

But rugby league is Australian sport’s greatest survivor. Knock it down, and it manages to come back bigger and better than ever – as shown by last week’s record television audience for State of Origin.

However, allegations that surfaced last week in relation to potential match fixing, combined with the recent salary cap scandal at Parramatta, not only threaten the integrity of the core rugby league product, but prove that the game needs more transparency if it is to survive and grow in the longterm.

The NRL cannot simply be reactive; it cannot bury its head in the sand and finger point, while hoping the problem goes away and the game again

survives another challenge. The code’s governing body must be proactive, and must implement a range of measures that improve the game’s transparency.

For me, it starts with all player pay packets being public knowledge, and re-working the rules in relation to third party agreements.

Given the rugby league media tends to report

p l a y e r wages anyway (obtained from a variety of sources), it’d simply make sense if fans knew what each player was earning, improving the game’s transparency in relation to the salary cap and helping fans understand the facts and figures that make up their squad.

While questions about privacy would be raised, many sports internationally make player wages available publicly, and the A-League is said to be considering such a move in the near future.

While there will always be a way to ‘beat the

s y s t e m ’, ensuring player wages are made public puts the onus back on the players and player managers, along with the clubs and the NRL, to ensure everything is operating above board.

The NRL must also review its partnership with gambling organisations, particularly in the wake of the match fixing allegations.

On May 13, the NRL announced it had

reached an agreement that would see Sportsbet become the code’s official wagering partner until 2020.

Why does rugby league need an ‘official wagering partner’?

If anything, the NRL should be distancing itself as far as possible from gambling organisations and putting in place an individual or team to ensure the gap between the code itself and gambling organisations remains wide.

Unlike horse racing, rugby league doesn’t exist purely because of the gambling aspect.

However, because gambling on footy will only grow whether there’s official partnerships or not, the game also needs to look at improving the transparency of team lists and game structures.

As it stands, clubs are forced to name team lists on Tuesday afternoons – sometimes six days before the game in question kicks off – but don’t have to confirm the team actually taking the field until an hour before the match begins.

There’s no rules surrounding the changing of teams from Tuesday to match day – clubs can change their entire 17 players if they so wish.

It’s clear that a few heads need to come together at the NRL to work out a better system.

Scandals will never disappear from the rugby league landscape.

But fans have always found solace in the 80 minute game involving their club on the weekend, where all troubles can be put aside and the focus can be on the game in front of them.

However, when that 80 minutes has its integrity questioned, we have a problem.

The NRL needs to get ahead of this.

PANTHERS SECURE YOUNG GUNS

James Fisher-Harris and Nathan Cleary have signed upgraded deals to remain with the Panthers until at least the end of the 2019 season.

The duo were already contracted until the end of 2018 but last week agreed to improved terms in return for an additional year on their respective deals.

Fisher-Harris, 20, relocated from his native New Zealand to join the Panthers in 2013.

He has represented the Junior Kiwis, was a member of the club’s premiershipwinning NYC side last season and made his NRL debut in round one this year.

“Despite the fact James has only played a handful of NRL matches, we are extremely confident in his potential and have invested in his long-term future with this deal,” Panthers Executive General Manager Rugby League, Phil Gould said.

“I have no doubt this young man will be an integral part of our NRL team and a regular member of the New Zealand Test squad in years to come.

“He is just the latest example of a player graduating from our junior representative program into a premiership-winning NYC team and then into the NRL squad.”

Cleary, 18, also progressed through the

junior grades at the Panthers and played alongside Fisher-Harris to claim the 2015 Holden Cup Premiership.

He made his first grade debut against the Storm last weekend.

“Nathan is an outstanding young man who first entered our Playmakers Academy back in 2011,” Gould said.

“He has come through the junior representative program and achieved tremendous personal honours through captaining the Australian Schoolboys and playing for the Junior Kangaroos.”

Nathan is the son of former Panthers coach, Ivan Cleary.

The students spoke to Managing Editor, Troy Dodds, about careers in the media and the day-to-day operations of a local newspaper.

“It’s great to speak with the kids from the Panthers on the Prowl program. It’s a fantastic concept and a superb extension to the great community work done

by the Penrith Panthers,” Mr Dodds said.

“The students had plenty of questions to ask about the media and how we put the paper together.”

Panthers on the Prowl aims to enhance opportunities for young people in the local community and their families. It aims to develop self-esteem and self-worth within its students, enabling them to become positive contributors to society.

opeful Penrith Panthers fans were among those who purchased the first 2016 NRL Grand Final tickets on Monday.

Club Members were able to purchase tickets to the season decider from Monday morning with general tickets available from Friday, June 10 at 10am.

NRL Chief Commercial Officer Michael Brown said ticket prices had not increased on last year, when close to 83,000 fans witnessed one of the most enthralling Grand Finals of all time at ANZ Stadium.

“The Grand Final is more than just a game between two teams,” he said.

“No matter who you support, every Grand Final is an experience, full of entertainment on and off the field and

memories forged for a lifetime. There is nothing better than the thrill of a packed stadium for the final Premiership match of the year, no matter the teams that are playing.”

Mr Brown said it was still cost effective for fans to attend the game.

“We have ensured that once again, fans will have a range of affordable seats to choose from, whether it be single ticket fans or families. There is a place for everyone,” he said.

Pricing for Club Members starts from $45 for an adult and $150 for a family.

Early pre-sale tickets for fans are available from $65 for an adult and $170 for a family.

Before the match Penrith were boosted by the inclusion of star hooker James Segeyaro, however he was forced to withdraw pre-game with a groin strain.

Fortunately for Penrith, Segeyaro’s withdrawal didn’t have any impact on the side with the Panthers running away 42-24 winners.

A tight first half saw the Panthers lead just 18-16 at the break before they kicked into gear in the second half to put away the Tigers with ease.

Try scorers for the Panthers included Moses Leota (2), Tyrone May, Brendan Attwood, Josh Hall, Will Smith and George Jennings. Josh Hall kicked a perfect seven from seven.

The Panthers will aim for three in a row for the first time this season when they take on Manly at Pepper Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

The match against the Sea Eagles is set to be an intriguing one with Jamie Soward set to line up in the halves after he was dropped from first grade by coach Anthony Griffin.

This weekend’s ISP team will be Penrith’s strongest in recent memory with Segeyaro also named to take his place at hooker. Will Smith will captain the side from the centres while Zach DockarClay partners Soward in the halves.

match against the Melbourne Storm was postponed last Saturday afternoon due to bad weather conditions in south-east Queensland.

The Round 13 match was due to be played at Sunshine Coast Stadium as opposed to AAMI Park in Melbourne, but was washed out by the storms up north.

The match will now be played at a later date.

After their unplanned weekend off, the Panthers will return to the field this Sunday afternoon against the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval.

The competition-leading Panthers will be shooting for 11-straight wins when they take on the last-placed Sea Eagles.

If past results from both teams are anything to go by, this match could very well turn into a blood bath for the boys from the Northern Beaches.

The match kicks off at 1.45pm.

» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys’ match

against Blacktown Workers last Saturday afternoon was postponed due to the Sydney storms.

The match will now be played at 3pm on Saturday, July 23 at H.E. Laybutt Fields in Blacktown.

Meanwhile, St Marys along with the rest of the Ron Massey Cup competition will enjoy this Queen’s Birthday long weekend off before resuming play against Mounties in Round 15 on Saturday, June 18.

St Marys currently sits in sixth position on the Ron Massey Cup ladder.

The TV character they love to hate

here’s very few TV shows that have managed to achieve a cult following quite like ‘Game of Thrones’.

With a host of fascinating characters and a storyline that consistently shocks and enthrals audiences, the series based on the fantasy books by George R.R Martin is one of the biggest pop culture success stories of recent years.

As an actor, being involved in a project like ‘Game of Thrones’ is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and one that English actor Eugene Simon – aka Lancel Lannister – doesn’t take for granted.

“It’s such a feeling of a dream coming true, it’s such a great feeling,” Eugene said about his involvement with the show.

“Everything about it is just so huge, so enormous and bigger than life.”

Viewers of ‘Game of Thrones’ will know all about the transformation that Lancel Lannister has gone through during the last few seasons.

Starting out as King Robert Baratheon’s naive squire who gets involved with his cousin, Cersei Lannister, Lancel returned to the screen in season five as Brother Lancel, a member of the fanatical religious movement known as the Sparrows.

“I found out about the transformation when I started shooting season one,” Eugene said.

“George R.R. Martin emailed me personally and gave me a synopsis of Lancel’s story in each book.

“So I knew that there was an idea but I didn’t know if it was going to be fulfilled.

“[When I saw the script] I had that great feeling which all actors get, which is sort of a cocktail of adrenaline, wetting yourself fear, and a pure rush of energy, it was just wonderful.”

Eugene Simon will be making his first trip to Australia next week as part of the Supanova Pop Culture Expo, which brings fans face to face with a host of actors from the worlds of comic books, sci-fi, animation and fantasy.

Eugene is no stranger to these types of conventions, having just finished up on the Comic-Con circuit in the US. He admits that the reaction from fans to the character of Lancel has been varied, with fairly equal measures of love and hate.

“The greatest ones are when people come up to me and go ‘dude, your character’s a dick’, we always have a laugh about that,” Eugene laughed.

“But then they always say they really like the transition and they’re very interested in the Faith Militant storyline.

“I think they love how it’s being told and I find myself really appreciative to them for saying that.”

I

t’s a safe bet that the last thing Dutch seafaring explorer and merchant trader Abel Tasman would have thought as he swept down the west coast of Tasmania in his little exploration vessel Heemskerk in 1642, was that one day a wine would be made on that seemingly inhospitable land and be named after he and his ship.

Nor that in fact the foul winds that frustrated him in his quest to put foot ashore here, would become so integral to Tasmania’s climate that its vineyards would thrive here to produce many of Australia’s premier cool climate wines.

One name that pays homage to Tasman is Heemskerk Wines, 25km north-east of Hobart, one of the most southerly cool-climate grape-producers in Australia. And their just-recently released 2011 Abel’s Tempest Tasmania Chardonnay Pinot Noir is a drop you’ll find is up there with the very best of Aussie bubblies, and an ideal drop when the call is for a rewarding celebratory sparkler.

Interestingly this one came from a vintage that began with poor fruit set due to severe spring frosts, some cold spells in January, and then a rewarding Indian Summer of glorious autumn days that resulted in the best of fruit for making sparkling wine. Pay $32 for this great drop for special, or any-time, celebrations.

One to note: The Hunter Valley’s Andrew Margan used fruit off some of the oldest Verdelho vines in Australia in his excellent-value 2015 Verdelho that’s a steal at just $20 a bottle (pictured).

A buy-now-drink-now drop to enjoy young and fresh, it’s fruitiness makes for a marvellous match with spicy Thai and Malaysian dishes.

After 15 years all the favourites are back but things have taken a turn for the worse. Celebrities are being assassinated while posing with Derek Zoolander’s signature Blue Steel look.

To assist in their murder investigations, Interpol decides to recruit Derek (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) to infiltrate the high fashion world and help put a stop to the killings.

But with their rival Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) free and out for revenge, it won’t be an easy task.

‘Zoolander 2’ is a star studded affair with a cast list that includes Ben

Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Penelope Cruz, Fred Armisen and an almost unrecognisable Kristen Wiig.

The film also features a long list of cameo appearances including rapper and self-confessed fashion icon Kanye West, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and mega pop star Justin Bieber.

It’s been a long time between drinks for fans of ‘Zoolander’ which has become a classic comedy hit.

As with the Ocean’s franchise ‘Now You See Me 2’ is a humorous caper style film that relies heavily on the charm of its all-star cast.

Ê You may have noticed comedian Chris Taylor missing from the new series ‘The Chaser’s Election Desk’ last night, after he decided to continue to remain behind the scenes and write comedy scripts for the ABC. Julian Morrow, Chas Licciardello, Craig Reucassel and Andrew Hansen all returned in what was a very funny episode. ‘The Chaser’s Election Desk’ airs on Wednesday nights on the ABC. Ê New US action drama ‘Rush Hour’ begins on 7flix at 8.30pm tonight, Thursday, June 9. Not only was it the highest rating Origin of all-time but it was easily the highest rating program of the year as well. In Sydney alone it drew 1.19 million viewers. Penrith Hospital Auxiliary will be hosting an Illawarra Machine Knitters Parade on Thursday, June 23 from 10.30am.

Entry is $10 with all proceeds going towards Nepean Hospital. It will be held at St. Stephen’s Church in Penrith.

The annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft and Collectables Show will be held on Sunday, June 26 from 10am to 4pm at Penrith Panthers.

The stall displays on the day offer participants a range of collector items including antique, vintage and modern dolls, toys and bears. The show features jewellery, teddy bears, handmade craft, doll houses, doll furniture, doll repairs, beads, patterns, candles, gem stones and supplies to make your own dolls and bears.

The Sunset Station Singers (SSS), a group of Vietnam Veterans, are a self-funded group that sing at hospitals and events.

Donut King is expecting to give away more than 60,000 cups of coffee to caffeine lovers across Australia on Barista’s Shout Day on Wednesday, June 15.

Between 9am and 5pm, anyone who heads to a Donut King in Penrith or St Marys will receive a free small Royal Bean coffee and mini cinnamon donut from the barista.

Donut King General Manager, Nicholas Brill, said Barista’s Shout Day is to thank customers for their ongoing support.

Lilies are commonly used in floral arrangements and cats often have access to them, however, most cat owners and florists are unaware that lilies are toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure.

Indoor cats and especially kittens are drawn to flowers as they are a novel feature in a familiar environment. In investigating the flowers, cats will often play with and chew parts of the plant. This often goes unnoticed by owners and can even occur when the cat is home alone.

Signs of lily toxicity usually start within several hours of ingestion and signs may include depression, loss of appetite and vomiting. Within 1-3 days, the toxin will cause sudden kidney failure and this will cause pain, drooling, vomiting and a marked reduction in the amount of urine produced. At this stage, aggressive treatment is needed and many cats will die despite treatment.

If you suspect your cat may have ingested lilies it is vital that you seek immediate veterinary attention as early detection and treatment is vital. The prognosis for a full recovery is excellent if treatment is started before kidney failure develops.

To reach your daily requirements adults need to consume around 1000mg of calcium, with 1300mg recommended for teens, women over 50 and men over 70.

Generally when people go dairy free they swap to plant

based milk sources, including soy, almond, rice and oat milk. While these can be nutritious alternatives, it’s important to check the nutrition labelling to ensure the product has been fortified with calcium.

Some brands will contain more calcium than others so look out for those that contain approximately 300mg per serve. This is the equivalent of the calcium content of a glass of cow’s milk.

Along with fortified plant based milks, and calcium fortified breads and cereals, plant foods like tofu, green leafy vegetables and almonds also contain calcium. Keep in mind though that the calcium content of these foods is lower than dairy, so it’s best to incorporate them into your diet alongside calcium fortified products.

Many Australians struggle to reach their daily calcium requirements so these plant foods can be a beneficial addition to the diet.

If you’re not sure whether you’re getting enough calcium in your diet it’s best to speak to an accredited practicing dietitian.

And remember, weight bearing exercise and vitamin D, from food and sunlight, also contribute to bone health. So do your skeleton a favour and get moving!

Running to Rio Penrith will be getting behind Ben St Lawrence at this year’s Olympic Games NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith-born distance runner Ben St Lawrence will compete in his second Olympic Games after he was added to the 2016 Australian Olympic Team last week.

St Lawrence, the Australian 10,000m record holder, is the latest in a string of local athletes to make this year’s Rio Olympics.

The 34-year-old fought back from major surgery in 2015 to reach his second straight Olympic Games.

“It’s a huge honour, something that I have worked very hard for and am very grateful for,” St Lawrence said.

“I’ll go into Rio with four years more experience and an Olympic final already under my belt.

“I was 20th in London, I aim to be a lot closer to the front in Rio.” The Wentworth Falls resident missed

the 2015 World Championships with a 14cm tear in his hamstring.

St Lawrence said he’s keen to show the world that he still has what it takes.

“I’ve had a very solid progression since surgery last year, and feel that if I can continue this trajectory I will be positioned to run a race that I can be very proud of in Rio. I may be able to hit career best form just at the right time,” he said.

“This is a truly global event, with superstars from every continent compet-

ing. I can’t control what they are doing, however I can do everything possible to be in my best shape on race day – so that is what I’ll focus on.”

St Lawrence’s addition to the team takes the Athletics Section of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team to 45.

In the lead-up to August’s Olympics and Paralympics in September, the Weekender will be showcasing a number of local athletes who will no doubt do the Penrith region proud in Brazil.

Mr Botros said introducing kids and reconnecting adults to the joy of climbing trees was at the heart of this innovative design.

Set over a 2000sqm site and based on extensive worldwide research, participants have five courses to tackle, spread over different heights and difficulty levels.

Skypeak Adventures delivers the ultimate thrill for aerial novices and enthusiasts alike and will incorporate a separate kids course, multi-level walkway as well as disability modifications to enable people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the high flying fun.

“We hope tens of thousands of people from all over Sydney will visit us,” Mr Botros said.

“It’s one of those projects that took a lot of planning; a lot of everything to get it up and running, so we hope it’s appealing to everyone in Sydney.”

Corporate businesses and school groups will too have the opportunity to schedule customised leadership development and team-building programs.

The structure also includes a high-tech sound system, state-of-the-art lighting for evening experiences, Wi-Fi throughout to facilitate social media interaction and water mists to cool down in summer.

Broadhead can’t wait for England trip Story continued from » p. 80 “It was always my goal to one day play for Australia but early on my game wasn’t up to that standard. So over the past four years I’ve had to work really hard to get where I am now.”

Broadhead, who primarily plays wicket keeper, was selected following the Australian Indoor Masters Championships in Mackay, where he represented NSW for the 13th time.

Broadhead said he wasn’t entirely sure he did enough during the tournament to be selected.

“You’re never 100 per cent confident you’ll make it because there are seven teams of 12 guys all vying for just 12 spots, and there were a lot of good players out there,” he said.

“Funnily enough my name was the last to be called out, so I was counting the guys as they went up on stage. It’s certainly a shock but something I’m ready for and can’t wait to experience.”

Broadhead began playing indoor cricket back in 1983 when the sport really started to make a name for itself in Australia.

These days he plays in a Masters team in Castle Hill, where he’ll no doubt be the envy of his teammates.

“I just can’t wait to get over to England and play with a new bunch of teammates. It’ll be something different and a great challenge,” Broadhead said.

Soccer community mourns the passing of local icon George Churchward at the age of 92 NATHAN TAYLOR

eorge Churchward, the Founding and Life Member of the Nepean Football Association (NFA), passed away last Saturday, June 4.

A founding and long serving member of the NFA Board, Mr Churchward served the local football community for decades before his son John Churchward, who recently departed as NFA President, followed suit.

Mr Churchward was a Life Member of the NFA and Football NSW, and was the first recipient of the Football NSW State Award, which was later renamed in his honour as the George Churchward Medal – the highest accolade awarded to serving members of the state’s football community.

“George’s interest in the football affairs of our district did not end with his service,” NFA Operations Manager, Linda Cerone said.

“He continued to maintain a close connection and avid interest in all things football right to the end.”

Ms Cerone said Mr Churchward was a passionate, dedicated man who always enjoyed a laugh or two.

“Those of us lucky to have known and

lenmore Park indoor cricketer Phil Broadhead can attest to the quote ‘Like a fine wine, I get better with age’, after the 52-year-old was selected to play for Australia for the very first time.

Following almost 35 years of playing indoor cricket, Broadhead’s lifelong dream was finally realised late last month when he was one of 12 players selected to represent Australia at the Indoor Cricket Masters World Series in England this October.

Broadhead and his Australian teammates will go up against some of biggest cricketing nations in the world at the inaugural competition for the over 50’s age category.

After missing out on numerous international tours in the past, the self-employed pool excavator said he was overwhelmed to have finally made it.

“It’s a great feeling, it’s still a bit of a blur at the moment though,” Broadhead told the Weekender.
