hile most grandmothers enjoy their twilight years kicking back and watching the grandkids, long-time Penrith resident Gloria Newham does things a little bit differently. This Saturday afternoon the 75-year-old great grandmother of three will be playing right-field in her Penrith City Softball Association second grade Grand Final. Ms Newham is arguably the oldest active softball player in the state, with her Penrith Patriots teammates calling her an absolute inspiration. “When I have a good hit they say ‘if Gloria can do it anyone can’ – everyone is really supportive,” she said. “Our team is very encouraging and we don’t criticise each other at all. We have a lot of fun and laughter, and we’re one of the friendliest teams to play against.” The age range between Ms Newham and her teammates is quite extraordinary with the youngest player in her team 55 years her junior at age 20. “I don’t have anything wrong with me, I’m on no medication so I may as well keep on going,” she said about her future in the sport. “The heat out on the field doesn’t worry me either and the girls are all so friendly. I’ve been playing for so long that I’d miss it if I gave it away.” Despite not remembering the last time she hit a home run, Ms Newham can still bat and field with the best of them. She has no plans to retire, but may consider dropping down a grade next year.

Council’s overseas trip to cost $50k “I see this as no benefit to the people of Penrith”: Councillor slams expensive visit to Asia

ust weeks after supporting an increase to rates, Penrith Council is funding a three week trip for three to Asia – with a budget of around $50,000. From April 25 to May 14, Mayor Karen McKeown and Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler will be flying business class to China, Korea and Japan, alongside one Council officer. The visit aims to promote Penrith’s capabilities in education and health, demonstrate Penrith as an investment destination and grow tourism here through Chinese, Korean and Japanese visitation. The trip was supported by every present Councillor at a Council meeting on Monday, February 29, except Councillor Marcus Cornish. “Nothing ever comes of this. I see this as no benefit to the people of Penrith, not when we’ve put a whopping great rise on rates,” he said. On February 10, the Weekender reported that Council will apply for a rate rise from July 1, 2016, to add money to the bottom line of Council, and fund future infrastructure projects and services.

J

Ross Fowler and Karen McKeown are heading to China. Digitally altered image

A Council spokesperson said rates account for around 40 per cent of Council’s income, and the funds for this trip will come from the Corporate Communications and Marketing budget. “Council has budgeted $50,000 for this trip covering four airfares, accommodation, internal travel, city gifts, production of marketing collateral for distribution at arranged meetings and interpreter services,” he said. Western Sydney Institute of TAFE will be joining the trip and covering their own costs, plus Council will be distributing and gathering information on behalf of Western Sydney University and the Nepean Blue Mountains Local District Health. Councillor Jim Aitken agreed with Councillor Cornish, in that the cost of the trip is too high. “I hope the trip is going to come in at less than that, but in some ways I can see this as an investment,” he said. “Every ratepayer has invested in the people that’s on that trip, and I’d like to think when they come back we will get a full transparent report on it.” Councillor Greg Davies said to argue Council shouldn’t be doing this is to argue Council isn’t interested in business in Penrith.

uesday marked the annual International Women’s Day and there’s been plenty to celebrate when it comes to women this week, highlighted by the terrific efforts of the Australian women’s football team. The Matildas breezed through their Olympic qualifiers and are now off to Rio, where they will fight to win their first ever medal. To put the qualification into perspective, it’s been 12 years since Australia has qualified to send a women’s football team to the Olympics. The girls will fly the flag proudly for Australia in Rio later this year and let’s hope the entire nation gets behind them. While the meaning behind the now very popular International Women’s Day campaign is important, I fear that we’re losing the intent of the concept. In many cases International Women’s Day has been hijacked for commercial purposes – an excuse for a nice corporate breakfast or lunch (granted, some of which are for good causes). But it’s also being used to have a giant whinge without looking closer to home. Take for example Angela Priestley writing for Women’s Agenda this week. “You may have also noticed over the last few days plenty of news articles and features about ‘women’, with our half of the population finally granted some attention (beyond the usual celebrity, weight loss, and wellbeing pieces),” she wrote in her piece for the website. Fair call perhaps, but let’s not forget that the majority of the editors in charge of running the celebrity, weight loss and wellbeing pieces are women. The most popular magazines in the

country are Woman’s Day and New Idea, both edited by women. And we all know the kind of content they run. Among the lead stories on the very popular Daily Mail website on Wednesday was Shane Warne’s ex-girlfriend putting on a “busty display” at the beach and Kim Kardashian posting another nude photo online. Both articles were written by women. Wouldn’t it be nice if magazines and websites with such power and popularity focused on the very things International Women’s Day is about, rather than body shaming, celebrity gossip and trash stories with no real substance? International Women’s Day is very important as at its core it celebrates the achievements of women and works to address equality issues that still exist in some areas, particularly internationally. And as much as blokes set in their ways and companies with outdated traditions

News.............................................1-29 Business.................................30-31 History ............................................32

may need to change their thinking, in some cases it’s quite clear that the work needs to start a little closer to home. Unfortunately some use International Women’s Day to push agendas that either have little substance or deserve further investigation. Or of course to go on an anti-men crusade, which really does seem to contradict the whole point. Why is Tony still on the agenda? Why are we still talking about Tony Abbott? Surely that ship has sailed. Somehow, an alleged slap on the bottom and a bizarre, and creepy, report of Mr Abbott’s former chief of staff Peta Credlin feeding her boss food from her fork, has the Member for Warringah back in the spotlight. There’s nothing like a new book release to get the tongues wagging in the insular Canberra press gallery. There seems to be an obsession with reporting on Mr Abbott, mirroring the press gallery’s obsession with Kevin Rudd when he was knifed as Prime Minister by Julia Gillard. As I’ve written before, I don’t believe that Mr Abbott legitimately believes he’ll ever contest the leadership of the party again. From what I’ve seen so far, Niki Savva’s book is a mildly interesting look at what became a disliked government. Surely we’d be far better off focusing on the current Prime Minister rather than the previous one. There’s a key Budget coming up, and an election is just months away. Let’s hope the journos in the nation’s capital take some time out from the gossip trail to focus on those two crucial things.

Health Minister excited about launch of My Health Record in Penrith JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith has been selected to trial a new innovative way of keeping health records. My Health Record was launched last Friday, March 4, and up to 360,000 residents in the Nepean and Blue Mountains area will soon have an account automatically created for them. The record will contain details of a patient’s health status uploaded by their doctor, records of any medicines used and any allergies the patient has. Minister for Health, Sussan Ley, said she is excited about the launch. “I’ve been waiting for this day since becoming Health Minister,” she said. “In last year’s Budget we announced a $485 million multi-year funding commitment to reboot the failure of what was called the Personally Controlled e-Health Record, now known as My Health Record. “The sooner we can roll out this opt-out option nationally, the better.” Residents will have to notify the Government if they don’t want to have a record by June, with all residents receiving a letter from the Department of Heath with details about the system. Ms Ley said privacy concerns shouldn’t arise in the new system.

Penrith: Man charged after glassing at local hotel

Cranebrook: Man busted for riding without a helmet

A man was taken to hospital on the weekend after he was attacked with a glass bottle at a local hotel. At about 2am on Sunday, March 6, two men were inside a hotel on High Street in Penrith. An incident between the two began with one man smashing a glass bottle before hitting the other man with it. The victim was taken to hospital and was treated for his injuries. A 36-year-old male, from Emu Heights, was charged by police in relation to the frightening incident. He was released on bail and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on April 4.

A man was issued with two infringement notices on the day the new push bike laws were introduced. The 48-year-old, from Cranebrook, was allegedly riding his push bike on a footpath without a helmet at about 2.50pm on Tuesday, March 1. Police stopped him and spoke to him about his riding. He was issued an infringement notice for riding on a footpath and one for riding without a helmet. The fine for not wearing a helmet has jumped from $71 to $319. Residents are urged to view the new rules to ensure they’re not caught out.

Jamisontown: Why was man taking photographs?

Penrith: Man charged after refusing to go home

Police are conducting inquiries after a man was spotted taking photos of a young girl in a Jamisontown playground. At about 6.30pm on Wednesday, March 2, an eight-year-old girl was playing on a flying fox in Tench Reserve when a man stopped walking near the park and allegedly took several photos of the girl. The girl’s mother started to approach the man but he left in a hurry after he saw her coming. Penrith Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen the man in the vicinity. He is described as being in his late 50s or early 60s with grey, balding hair.

A man was arrested after he refused to leave a licensed premises in High Street, Penrith last week. At about 2pm on Friday, March 4, staff at the licensed premises asked the 51-year-old man to leave. He allegedly refused and police were called. The man was arrested and charged with ‘excluded person fail to leave premises when required’. “We just ask that you go home when you’re asked,” a police spokesperson said this week. He was released on bail and is due in Penrith Local Court on March 30.

Understanding the ‘lived experience’ Senator visits Penrith on International Women’s Day to discuss traineeships and education DALE DRINKWATER

hile a childcare centre seems a predictable place to find women working on International Women’s Day, there’s good reason for a visit from the Federal Government. On Tuesday, Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott and Minister for Vocational Education and Training Senator Scott Ryan spoke with staff at the Little Learning School on Mulgoa Road. During their first stop touring the local area, Senator Ryan said it’s important to challenge stereotypes in the female workforce, but just as important to understand the lived experience. “Employment in traditional trade areas – mining, construction, electrical, manufacturing and engineering all suffer from low female participation,” he said. “We need to understand where there is a significant workforce, and if the system is working and organised well.” For trainee Stephanie Paltoo, studying through a Registered Training Organisation gave her more hands-on practical work at the childcare centre than a degree at university. “Everything is out of books at university,

and here it’s hands on, there are things here that you wouldn’t learn out of a book,” she said. “I’m doing a traineeship while studying a bachelor degree, and this has taught me a lot more about how to deal with families.” The 22 staff members at Little Learning School look after 108 children per day between 7am and 6pm, and service families that commute to work every day. Ms Scott said 70 per cent of the local community have to commute out of the area every day, with most being young families. “Our median age is 34, which means we have more children here than any other place in the country,” she said. “For women to be in the workforce, we need family arrangements, and we need great childcare providers locally.” Ms Scott said one of the biggest employers locally is childcare centres, and they are one of the biggest users of apprentices. “Today is about trades and training and childcare is a very big sector here in Lindsay,” she said. While in Penrith, Senator Ryan also visited McCarthy Catholic College, which boasts a Trade Training Centre, and Garton Group McDonald’s to discuss a range of issues.

Trees to go Emu Plains will become a safer place to walk in and drive along from Friday, when the removal of 25 trees begins. An independent arborist assessed trees along the Great Western Highway in Emu Plains in response to the death of a man from a falling branch in January. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said Council ensured all trees near roadways in the area had been visually inspected, and dangerous trees will be removed and replaced with a safer species. “[The arborist’s] report recommends we remove a number of trees which may present a risk of falling if similar storm conditions were repeated,” she said. The report indicated that the trees fell due to the severity of the storm in January, and the softened ground following heavy rainfall.

Council praised Penrith Council’s mission to light our streets and cool our city attracted attention at a forum recently. Minister for the Environment Mark Speakman acknowledged a range of vital projects Council has undertaken to create a more sustainable community at the Sydney Environmental Educators Network forum. “Many of the unique projects being developed at this local level work because they are created for local communities by local communities,” Mr Speakman said. “New and innovative partnerships with local and other levels of government, as well as industry and the community are key to meeting these challenges.”

Police swoop on dangerous truckies Drivers fail drug tests during special operation in Orchard Hills JADE ALIPRANDI

eavy vehicles passing through Orchard Hills were the target of an operation run by police officers and Roads and Maritime Services last weekend. At about 6.30am on Sunday, March 6, Operation Mudmen was set up on the Northern Road in Orchard Hills. Several infringements were handed out ranging from drug offences to speeding and defects. “The operation came after investigations by officers from the Joint Traffic Taskforce revealed there had been an alleged increase of trucks transporting illegal loads between the hours of 6am and 3pm,” a police spokesperson said. “The operation also focused on general heavy vehicle compliance, driver fatigue, vehicle compliance issues, drug use, load restraints and diary offences.” In total, 50 drug tests with four positive results and 238 roadside breath tests were conducted. Six traffic infringement notices were issued. Three speeding infringements for two light vehicles and one heavy vehicle were issued, one count of ‘allow fluid to leak onto roadway’ was issued, a minor

Police undertaking a major operation on the Northern Road last Sunday load breach infringement was given, five defects were issued for tyres not complying to the standard, and one PCA charge was handed out. “Another heavy vehicle attended the site to assist in the reduction of a significant load breach. This vehicle was also inspected by police and issued with a red label major grounded for a damaged fuel tank,” a police spokesperson said.

A 43-year-old woman allegedly tested positive to an illicit drug during the police operation, with further checks revealing she also had a suspended driver’s license and an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. A 73-year-old male truck driver and a 25-year-old male truck driver also both allegedly tested positive to an illicit drug in separate incidents.

INTIMACY CLINIC For Couples

Concerns deepen with mum’s disappearance still a mystery JADE ALIPRANDI

t’s been almost three weeks since St Marys mum of two, Katherine Ackling-Bryen, disappeared without a trace. Detectives from St Marys Local Area Command addressed the media late last week to renew their appeal for further information into Ms Ackling-Bryen’s whereabouts. Detective Inspector Barry Vincent, Crime Manager at St Marys police station, said there are worrying concerns over the 37-year-old. “We and her family are very concerned for her welfare,” Det Insp Vincent said. “We have made a number of inquiries to try and find her.” Ms Ackling-Bryen was last seen dropping her two children at school before attending a shopping centre on Charles Hackett Drive at 11.30am on Friday, February 19. Police believe Ms Ackling-Bryen left the shopping centre on foot and went to her home on the Great Western Highway. A number of items she purchased were left inside the locked house. “There were a number of items inside the home that a person would normally take with them when leaving such as a wallet,” Det Insp Vincent said.

Katherine Ackling-Bryen “At this stage there doesn’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her disappearance. “At the time we believe she left she has taken very little with her in terms of property and that obviously adds to our concern.” Ms Ackling-Bryen was last seen wearing a grey top, black tracksuit pants, light blue hat, and sunglasses. It is believed the last known people she spoke to were at her children’s school, with police still investigating anyone she may have spoken to at the shopping centre. Mayor’s News The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

New West

Saturday 12 March

Jamison Park Entry off Jamison Road, South Penrith

Sunday 13 March

Jamison Park Entry off Jamison Road, South Penrith

There’s a lot to celebrate regarding the New West, with the start of 2016 seeing plenty of progress. This week we promoted Penrith New West at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) National Congress in Adelaide. This is one of the biggest property development industry events of the year and the perfect platform to continue the call for partners to help grow our local economy and create jobs. We’re continuing to spread the ‘Invest in New West – Come and build Penrith with us’ message locally, nationally and internationally. We’re also celebrating what we’ve already achieved and what’s still to come. We’re working hard to develop growth sectors like lifestyle health and education to help create at least 45,000 extra jobs by 2031. Pipeline projects Sydney Science Park and the Health and Education Precinct will deliver at least 25,000 jobs in the next 15 years. We received numerous high quality submissions for the Expression of Interest for City Centre sites Reserve Street and Union Road. The short-listed

proponents will be asked to prepare more detailed proposals as part of the next stage of the process. We’re making inner city living a reality and building vibrant City Centres that are a pleasure to walk and get around. We’ll also activate the area around the Nepean River and improve its connection with the City Centre. Our population is growing and we’re one of only seven Sydney councils deemed fit to stand alone in the ‘Fit for the Future’ review of Local Government. We have 1.3 million annual visitors. We’re going to double that number and increase spending to more than $500 million annually by 2025. Western Sydney has $3.6 billion for roads and $1 billion for rail so far and we’re lobbying the state and federal governments for more. Penrith is at the heart of western Sydney. We connect the North West and South West Growth Centres. We’re uncompromising about our aspirations and excited about maximising the New West’s potential.

Funding sealed for new building State Government helps fund new administration office at local school DALE DRINKWATER

taff at Our Lady of the Way Primary School in Emu Plains have been dodging drips in a leaky administration building for years, but they’ve finally sealed funding for a brand new facility. The old administration building in the centre of the school is going to be knocked down, with a replacement built closer to the front that won’t leak in heavy rain. State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres visited the school to announce $291,735 of State Government funding to the $416,765 project, with the gap to be closed by the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta. School Principal, Sue Veling, said apart from the current building lacking in functionality, it’s in the wrong location in the centre of the school. “We find it hard to secure the playground, and that’s why we have a surveillance system at the front gate,” she said. “It’s going to go on the ‘cottage playground’ and will front on to Troy Street, and the current admin block will be knocked down, with that space turned into a new playground and landscaped.” Ms Veling said by the start of Term 4, when it is completed, the new building

Photo: Dale Drinkwater will bring added security and better access for parents to the school. “There will also be a beautiful children’s area for first aid, students will have a waiting area, the parents will have a waiting area, and there will be a conference room which we don’t have now,” she said. “But most of all, no one will get wet.” Mr Ayres said works will be funded through the Building Grants Assistance

Scheme (BAGS), that is dedicated to independent and Catholic schools. “Mums and dads who send their children to Catholic schools make big contributions, but we still think there’s an obligation on behalf of the Government to support children in any form of education,” he said. The Catholic Education Office will allocate the remaining $125,030.

New car park signage has been installed in Jamison Park in an effort to remind park users to park correctly and only in the marked bays. The popular park is used by a variety of sports including netball, soccer, athletics, recreation users and fitness groups. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said while there are enforcement options when people park incorrectly, she hopes that enforcement is not necessary with park users complying and parking safely. “Jamison Park is a great location to enjoy outdoor activities and the use of the park continues to rise,” Cr McKeown said. “There have been concerns raised by sporting groups and parents that safety is being compromised by people failing to park their vehicles properly which is having a direct effect on the safety and welfare of park users, especially children. “The new signage reminds us to park correctly by only parking in marked bays. When vehicles stray from these areas safety is put at risk.” Parking infringement notices will be issued for the following offences: • not stand vehicle in marked parking space; • stand vehicle in occupied marked parking space; • not stand vehicle wholly in marked parking space; and • stand vehicle in disabled persons parking area without authority. Signage has been erected in time for the busy winter sports season.

Hitting the road for a good cause No sign of cabin fever as good mates prepare to embark on a 1,500 kilometre adventure JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith resident Peter Scott and his friend Reg Armstrong will embark upon a 1,500 kilometre 4WD adventure in April, and head from beach to bay. Supporting the children’s charity Variety, the duo will scale new terrain, including the world’s largest sand island, Fraser Island. Travelling together in a confined area isn’t new territory for the pair – they have taken part in the event every year since its inception in 2005. “I don’t know how we’re still friends,” Mr Scott joked. “We’re still going well and it’s a great friendship to have. “He’s the main man – without Reg on my side I wouldn’t be doing what I do.” The team of cars will depart Coffs Harbour on April 2 and travel through Glen Innes, Marburg, Gympie and eventually end up at Fraser Island on April 7. Mr Scott said helping the children along the way is a definite highlight of each trip. “Helping the underprivileged children and children with disability makes you feel good that you’re trying to do something to help,” he said.

Photo: Megan Dunn “Finishing on Fraser Island will be a highlight too, I’m very excited to go this year.” Long time Variety supporters, the pair have collectively been involved with the charity for 40 years, and have racked up plenty of kilometres in that time.

“Between driving for work and pleasure we have both racked up a massive 180,000 kilometres in the past year alone,” Mr Scott said. In addition to the 4WD Adventure, the duo also partake in Variety’s other motoring event, the Variety Bash.

dear weekender... email: news@westernweekender.com.au post: Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750

Changes at Panthers The Weekender has been parading all the CEOs of Panthers and they are good men and true. They are looking for a replacement CEO, replacing Justin Pascoe, to take charge of the rugby league side of the business. CEO Brian Fletcher says “football is our core business”. So, Panthers have a new football coach and they are hiring a replacement Football CEO. What does Phil Gould do? That is, what does he do when he is not working for Channel Nine? Troy Dodds makes an interesting statement writing that 12 months ago the Panthers had Ivan Cleary as coach, Warren Wilson was Group CEO, Don Feltis was Chairman and Justin Pascoe was Football CEO. They are all gone. Troy admires Panthers’ calmness. I call it resilience. C’mon, Phil Gould, show us what you can do and not with another five year plan! JIM CLARKE, EMU PLAINS

Age of innocence comes to an end in our own backyard The conviction of a Winmalee man recently for lewd behaviour in Penrith Plaza and the recent reporting of a child being approached at a South Penrith shopping centre goes to show that our ‘age of innocence’ has well and truly passed, especially when the incidents

happen in our own backyard. I wonder if these incidents are on the increase or are we becoming more and more vigilant? I prefer the latter reason. More instances where you just don’t know who your neighbours are. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

Taking its toll Why are these so called politicians only saying something now? (Travelling on the M4 about to take its toll, Weekender March 3). Tolls returning to the M4 have been in discussion for years. The horse has already bolted. And the only time you’ll hear Stuart Ayres’ opinion on it is when there’s the next photo opportunity. ANDREW HEFFERNAN, VIA FACEBOOK

Different approach needed The M4 would be a great test for timed tolling, not distance tolling. Work out how long it takes point to point doing the speed limit and then set the toll fee on that. Should any driver fail to hit certain time ‘targets’ that are longer than the benchmark, then the toll amounts decrease accordingly. It would be interesting to see how the government then reacts to congestion problems, CAM SMITH, VIA FACEBOOK

Penrith expo gives women what they really want 75 exhibitors to pack Panthers for annual What Women Want Expo – back for its third year DALE DRINKWATER

veryone wins at this year’s What Women Want Expo, where women really get what they want while contributing to a great cause. Held on both Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13, Panthers’ Exhibition Pavilion will be filled to the edges with 75 exhibitors giving women a chance to let their hair down. Organiser Stephanie Bahe said she started the event to give every woman a bit of time to indulge, discover new things and empower themselves. “This event is dedicated to the every day woman. Not brides, builders or garden lovers, just the good old every day woman who has to be ‘Supermum’ and ‘Superwoman’,” she said. “The idea stemmed from my mum who was always Superwoman in my life – I wanted to honour women just like her.” At the What Women Want Expo you can discover Sydney’s luxury boutiques, emerging designers, and the very best products and services, from leading companies and brands. To be part of the free samples, manicures, gourmet delicacies, cocktails and wine tastings, tickets cost just $13.50 online or $40 for four people.

E

Kim Cancellier, Brittnee Sheath, Jasmine Carlow and Stephanie Bahe at Panthers

And along with all the fun a ticket buys, there’s also a good cause attached. $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Westmead, to support sick children and babies, and their mothers who care for them. “I have just had my first child and was blessed to have a very bright and healthy baby. I know that there are so many women out there that are not as lucky as me,” Ms Bahe said. “If I could donate anything at all to assist with these mothers and beautiful children in any way then that’s what I will do.” Now in its third year in Penrith, the event aims to provide an opportunity for women to experience the same as the city without the travel. Ms Bahe said it’s important that events like this take place in western Sydney. “We choose to only do events in the west side as there is nothing really available to western Sydney,” she said. “We found that women don’t usually travel to the big expos in the city and Penrith is a great hub for the west side.” Don’t miss the What Women Want Expo at Penrith Panthers, 123 Mulgoa Road, from 10am to 4pm on March 12 and 13. For an amazing 10 per cent off the door price, tickets can be purchased online now at www.thewhatwomenwantexpo.com. au.

he life of Ronda Hopkins and her dedication to the community has been cemented in Penrith history, through a plaque on the Great Western Highway in St Marys. The plaque was unveiled by Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown, Councillor Jackie Greenow, Londonderry MP Prue Car and Mrs Hopkins’ husband Brian Hopkins. Mrs Hopkins was known to many for her dedication to the region in making it a better place for people living with disability.

T

Cr McKeown said Mrs Hopkins was involved in the Penrith Disabilities Resource Centre over many years, and was a valuable member of Council’s Access Committee from 2008. “She was very vocal around disability access in our local community,” she said. During her time, she saw first hand the issues faced by many people challenged by a lack of access to important services and facilities. She had a mission to see an accessible pathway be built between Penrith and St Marys. After tragically suffering from a stroke, Mrs Hopkins became wheelchair bound. She passed away in 2013.

ing footpath access from kerbside parking to the new amenities. Council has delayed funding for works at three reserves in Erskine Park. Last year, Councillor Marcus Cornish requested a report into the suitability of playground equipment and BBQs at Aquarius Reserve, Sennar Reserve and Warbler Reserve. Council determined that the cost for a standard playground package is $75,000, with an additional $25,000 needed if a shade structure is required. In addition, it would cost around $26,000 to provide BBQs at each reserve, bringing the total cost to upgrade each of the reserves to between $300,000 to $375,000. As the reserves were not identified as priority upgrades, and there was no funding available in the 2015-16 budget to fund it, Council decided to postpone the works. Council will apply to the Geographical Names Board to name the bushland between Castlereagh Road, Nepean Street, Camelot Drive, and Soling Crescent in Cranebrook, ‘Mountain View Reserve’. The community suggested names for the new reserve, then voted on Council’s Have Your Say site, concluding on the selected name. The reserve is part of a four year $1.8 million restoration.

Education

Students urged to lend a hand to others as part of ‘buddy bench’ JADE ALIPRANDI

ambridge Park High School installed a ‘buddy bench’ this week in the hopes it will promote a happier playground environment for children at the school. Students will be able to sit on the buddy bench when they feel alone, or want someone to talk to, and other students will be able to spend time with them in the hope it will help students become more aware of how other students might be feeling, and how they can make a difference in someone’s life by offering them friendship. Five Year 7 students and two team members from Bunnings Warehouse North Penrith worked together on Tuesday to build and paint the bench. The Complex Manager at Bunnings North Penrith, Richard Gurnett, said the message of the bench is an important one. “While putting this bench together we tried to make sure the kids really understood what the bench is about in the hopes they will relay it to their peers,” he said. “The kids will somewhat become leaders to their peers and will be involved in helping students understand what the bench is about.”

C

Photo: Megan Dunn Mr Gurnett said Bunnings hope to help roll out more buddy benches to other schools soon. “This is the best part of my job as far as business goes; to be an integral part of a project like this and do a good thing, I see that as a privilege,” Mr Gurnett said. “We hope to keep rolling out the buddy benches across the schools in the local area – there’s no limit for us in how many schools we can introduce this initiative to.”

Glenmore Park’s Lisa Walker is about to lose her hair for a good cause

9.00pm DALE DRINKWATER

lenmore Park resident Lisa Walker is getting out the clippers, and selflessly shaving off her long, black locks this Saturday. In just one month, Ms Walker raised over $5000 for the World’s Greatest Shave to support a family friend, Josh Walsh, in his battle against Leukemia. Sadly, Mr Walsh passed away on February 10, leaving behind a young family, and his wife, Megan. After his passing, Ms Walker continued her fundraising efforts for the Leukemia Foundation, who are providing ongoing support for Mr Walsh’s grieving family in South Penrith. “We’ve gone past the targeted $5000 and it’s blown Megan away,” Ms Walker said.

G

WW21743

The $5000 will fund a three month research project through the Leukemia Foundation, that Ms Walker believes is well worth losing five years of hair growth for. “It’s a luxury that I even have that option to shave my head, as those with Leukemia don’t. It’s only hair, its going to grow back,” she said. Ms Walker’s husband, Justin Walker, was Mr Walsh’s best friend, and is proud of his wife for making such a bold and brave move. “I’ve known him for 20 years, and we have lived and breathed it, it’s had a big impact on our lives,” he said. “The commitment she is making, and the sacrifice is amazing.” Donations can be made via www. worldsgreatestshave.com, clicking the ‘Sponsor’ link, and then search ‘Lisa Walker’.

BUSINESS W it’s foolish to Why copy another business co

There’s no shame in asking for help or assistance

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Western Sydney Business Centre

0412 701 147 | info@sheldesign.com.au

4721 5011 | michael@wsbusiness.com.au

I

t is a common complaint amongst graphic designers, photographers, and many other creative people who post their work online, that their designs are prone to be copied. Sometimes it is a blatant ‘copy and paste’ of a design, other times it is a slight variation to make it appear like a new design. Other industries may find that competitors adopt the same practices or marketing messages, confusing potential customers. Aside from these actions breaking copyright and intellectual property laws, I simply do not understand why anyone would directly copy another business! It is highly likely that the ‘copier’ will be found out (so why risk this?). But more importantly, I do not understand why a business would want to pretend to be something they are not. We should all check what competitors or our industry in general are doing from time to time. But the focus of this research should be on keeping abreast of trends or seeing if there are ways your business can improve.

If your goal for investigating a competitor is to duplicate what they are doing, your business will fail to thrive. This is because your practices won’t be authentic, and you are unlikely to have an understanding of, or a commitment to, the underlying reason behind that process or procedure. Adopting someone else’s marketing message will only work to a degree. That marketing message is made up of that business’ values, mission, goals and so on. Taking it on as your own will only result in customers finding out very quickly that there is no authenticity and they are dealing with the ‘copy’ not the ‘real thing’. Think about the businesses you love to deal with. They are likely to have something unique about them that no-one else does, or they do the ‘expected’ things a lot better. If your business is based on copying others, please stop! Find out what makes you unique and develop your own voice. Customers will respond to this much better than if you attempt to duplicate someone else’s image.

C PIFOCR NTHI E D N I U E O S P

Sunday 20th March 11am - 3pm

A

nyone who has been in business for any period of time knows you can’t tackle everything yourself. Business owners are daring and inspired people with the grit to overcome extraordinary obstacles. One of the most common characteristics of successful business people is that they are not afraid to ask questions or to seek help when they need it. When you detect a downward trend in your numbers, need new ideas, or just can’t find a solution to something, seek outside help. Getting real help requires having a willingness to be open and honest. Sometimes this means revealing the skeletons in your closet and, in some cases, admitting failure. There are professionals like accountants, lawyers, consultants and specialists who you can call on. There are also Centres such as ours who can see you for some fully subsidised appointments up front. No matter where you are, there is always help around. The biggest mistake many business owners make is seeking business advice

from a professional business advisor only when they are in trouble. Proactive business owners surround themselves with talented people, have a realistic vision, and are able to communicate this vision. You can bring in advisors to help create the future, and stay on track when things are good, not just when things are bad. If you’re starting a business, the importance of assembling a team of business professionals is still important. Seeking business advice is a good thing. The key to entrepreneurial success lies in the ability to plan, implement, execute, measure, and adjust. It is very difficult, in most cases, for an entrepreneur to accomplish all of these on his own. Having an impartial advisor can be an asset. No one has all the answers, and sometimes we’re too close to a situation to be able to see it clearly. While asking for help can be tough, the right person’s advice can be very valuable. Just like an illness, most business problems can be cured if they are detected early. If you want to survive in business, don’t wait until it is too late for anyone to help you.

Is your marketing achieving results? Work with a business advisor to discuss a marketing strategy that will work for you.

here’s something special about Lilys Restaurant Bar and Function Centre that deserves attention. It’s not just that the centre will be celebrating six successful years on its birthday this Sunday or that they have just completed major renovations – it’s the open arms they offer to all corners of the community. “We are not a club, you don’t have to sign in and you don’t have to be a member. If you live within five minutes or five hours we still want you here,” Sales and Marketing Manager, Yasmin O’Brien said. The major centre in Seven Hills has just completed massive renovations in order to cater to a wider audience. “We want to be that easy place for people to go to where their kids can play in the playground and the parents can sit back and have a chat and know their kids are entertained,” she said. “We don’t want to pigeon hole ourselves, we want to be the venue for everyone for everything.”

There’s something on almost every day at Lilys Restaurant Bar and Function Centre, including Cars and Cappuccinos on the second Sunday of every month. HISTORY

Turning back Time

COMPILED BY DALE DRINKWATER

One year ago...

Winbourne was once used as a holiday resort. Photo: Penrith City Library

Winbourne’s famous past

I

t is a location that speaks to the very heart of Mulgoa, the true essence of the region, and brought fame to the area halfway through its life. Mulgoa means black swan to the Dharug people, the traditional owners of the land that covers a large portion of the Cumberland Plain Woodland. Black swans would breed in the Mulgoa area, and to this day continue to breed in ‘Swan Dam’ at Winbourne, an estate just south of the Mulgoa township. Winbourne, much like the rest of the Mulgoa area belonged to the locally famous William Cox and his four sons

James, Charles, George and Henry from the early 1800s. William Cox was born at Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England, and after moving to Sydney granted his son George Cox 600 acres, that was to be the future site of ‘Winbourne’. After receiving the land in 1916, George Cox built the house Winbourne, and his family lived on the property until 1901. The property was leased by Tom Campbell as a holiday resort from 1914, and it was later the location for the first film for one of Australia’s most famous poems. According to the State Library of NSW, Winbourne was one of the locations for

the filming of the 1920 version of the renowned ‘The Man From Snowy River’, that was produced silent, and in black and white. But in August that same year, the main mansion was gutted by a ferocious fire, that left the building in complete ruin. After it made the big screen, the property was bought by the ‘Christian brothers’, who made some adaptations to the building to accommodate a Catholic Church. The stone building that was once a ballroom became the chapel, and a new wing was built on the site. Today, the property is used as a retreat and conference centre.

Remember when... Penrith’s main street, High Street, was once dirt and travelled on by horse and cart, as shown in this photo taken in July, 1914. Looking west towards Station Street, you can see flags in the distance, bunting and cuttings from trees to celebrate the centenary of the Western Road.

In the March 13, 2015 edition of the Western Weekender, we announced the sod turning of the new road upgrades to the Werrington Arterial. The road is now past halfway to completion, and connects the Great Western Highway to the M4 heading to and from the east. Both State and Federal Government representatives attended the start of construction, and were interrupted by a passing driver who yelled, “It’s about time”. At our Editor’s Desk, we squashed rumours that Panthers were planning to move their games away from Penrith Stadium, that was part of Jackie Kelly’s campaign against Stuart Ayres at the State Election. Mr Ayres, who was and still is Minister for Sport, was seething when he saw Ms Kelly’s flyers, as was then Panthers CEO Warren Wilson. Also, Western Sydney University (WSU) students banded together and held a vigil for ‘Bali Nine’ duo, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, who were sentenced to death by firing squad by the Indonesian government. WSU student, Shane Gorman, labelled the execution and other capital punishment as the “fast food” of law and order.

MATCH PREVIEW

BULLDOGS

TROY DODDS @troydodds

O

nly keyboard warriors and social media trolls write off a team after round one of the competition. While Penrith’s 30-22 loss to Canberra last weekend was a disappointing way to start the season, we’re far from putting a red felt tip pen through the Panthers’ chances in 2016. The key turning point last weekend should have come in the 45th minute when Josh Mansour scored out wide. It put the Panthers up 22-16, and in the lead-up to the try Canberra’s key playmaker Blake Austin was injured and ultimately forced from the field. With the hot conditions in play, the Panthers should have capitalised on the six point lead and Austin’s injury and

closed out the game – even though there was more than half an hour remaining. Instead, they fumbled their way through the rest of the match – highlighted by a critical dropped ball by Mansour close to Penrith’s line and then Peta Hiku’s crucial error with the game on the line in the last minute. While James Segeyaro’s injury is another setback, it’s quite clear the Panthers have the nucleus of a good team – but the round one jitters were obvious. Coach Anthony Griffin would have learned quite a bit about his team from that game and while a short turnaround into the Bulldogs isn’t ideal, it will give him an opportunity to make some quick on-therun changes without getting too bogged down in what happened in Canberra. Trent Merrin made a solid debut in Panthers colours, leading the metres gained, scoring a try and adding some mobility to the Panthers’ pack. I thought he and Bryce Cartwright were Penrith’s best, the latter playing

80 minutes in awfully hot conditions, perhaps a sign of his current fitness. The task against the Bulldogs tonight is not an easy one, especially after they put the cleaners through Manly at Brookvale Oval last Friday night. Despite all the preseason talk about the Bulldogs struggling to deal with the new interchange rules, they did it easily against a Sea Eagles side that looked very uncoordinated under new coach Trent Barrett. The loss of Segeyaro is a significant one for Penrith. He’s been replaced by Tyrone Peachey in the number nine jumper, with Griffin resisting the temptation of handing another youngster their debut. Peachey’s move to hooker means that Elijah Taylor earns a recall. His defensive work around the ruck was clearly missing last weekend and his return is a welcome one for Penrith. The Bulldogs have also lost their starting hooker to injury with Michael Lichaa hurt against the Sea Eagles, with Craig Garvey named as his replacement.

Kerrod Holland makes his debut at centre with Chase Stanley ruled out, while David Klemmer returns from suspension. With games against Brisbane, the Dragons and Cowboys coming up, getting on the board and earning two competition points is vital against the Bulldogs tonight. I’m confident that even without Matt Moylan, the Panthers can do enough at home to grab the win. Tip: Panthers by 2

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther

TAYLOR ON THE OUTER » The dropping of Elijah Taylor to reserve grade in the days before Penrith’s clash with Canberra last weekend certainly came as a shock, but only strengthens rumours that he won’t be re-signed by the Panthers. The tackling machine is off contract at the end of the season and is set to be on the lookout for a new club with the Panthers unlikely to forward him an offer. Taylor looked a despondent figure walking off the Canberra Stadium turf after last weekend’s NSW Cup loss to Mounties. However, he was certainly upbeat when we spotted him at training on Monday.

» James Segeyaro will be missing for

up to eight weeks after breaking his arm against the Raiders, which is a huge blow not only for the Panthers but also for the former Hooker of the Year personally. Segeyaro is off contract at the end of the season and is looking to impress both the Panthers and other clubs. I’m told club

officials are yet to decide on their position when it comes to Segeyaro, who certainly failed to show his 2014 form last season. Ben Ross, Kevin Kingston and Luke Swain. Photo: Megan Dunn

» The Panthers wanted to keep James

Fisher-Harris’ first grade debut under wraps until at least last Saturday morning but the news was leaked by an over-excited Fisher-Harris himself, who posted the news on his Facebook page on Friday.

» A host of former Panthers players

attended a successful Men of League season launch at St Marys Leagues Club last week. Kevin Kingston, Brad Drew, Ben Ross and Luke Swain were all at the event, which raised thousands of dollars for Men of League. Current players Bryce Cartwright and Reagan Campbell-Gillard were also at the luncheon, and participated in a Q&A on stage. Congratulations to all involved in the event.

» Spotted: James Segeyaro and Trent

Merrin enjoying a mid-morning coffee at High Street Depot on Monday.

» It was simply ludicrous that a drinks

break was not implemented for the players last Saturday in Canberra. The NRL leaves it up to both teams to decide on if a drinks break is necessary but it’s quite clear that the code itself needs to determine when such a break should be implemented. Even Jamie Soward seemed confused, Tweeting on Sunday: “Drinks breaks for different games? Canberra has no beach to get breeze from either. Drinks break after a try scored equals 3-4 minute break. Still couldn’t get one yesterday.”

» The hot conditions have forced the

Panthers to limit their field work this week, especially considering the short turnaround from Saturday into Thursday. The side had a captain’s run yesterday but the rest of the training work has been focused in the gym and in the video room.

» St Marys Leagues Club is hosting a

Saints To Stars sportsmans dinner on May 7. The event features a St Marys Greats panel including John Cartwright, Peter Wallace, Tim Grant and Shane Elford, with Wendell Sailor along for the ride as guest speaker. Alan Wilson will MC the event. To find out more, call the club on 9677 7777.

» With the NRL season now well underJames Segeyaro is set to miss around eight weeks with a broken arm

way, ‘myPlates’ has the number plate

range to satisfy the most ardent fan. Already have your club membership, jersey, scarf, cap and ball? Now you can show your support in the most tangible manner – by taking it to the streets with an NRL team number plate on your car. The NRL plate range is a simple and cost effective solution for fans. Just restyle your existing plate (utilising the existing letter/ number combination) with your team’s colour and logo design – this attracts a one-off fee of $250.00. If you want to take it a step further, you can personalise the content – get behind your favourite player, or place a special team message! This personalised content, where you choose your own letter and number combinations, attracts an additional annual fee starting at $102.00. Login to www. myplates.com.au for more information.

» It’s a busy time at Panthers behind the

scenes and of course the footy itself is back, so it’s no surprise to see our fearless leader Phil Gould taking a break from social media. Gus closed down his Twitter account last week, just days before resuming his commentary work with Channel Nine.

address these days – maskedpanther@ westernweekender.com.au. Send through your news tips, player sightings or gossip. I’m a great secret keeper, I promise! Maybe soon they’ll even give me my own Twitter account!

his 18 minute stint. Speaking with Extra Time, the talented Kiwi big man said he was beyond nervous sitting in the 35 degree heat waiting for his number to be called. “I was pretty nervous… I think I burnt up all my energy just sitting on the sideline. It was pretty hot out there,” he said. After enjoying an outstanding preseason which resulted in rave reviews from coach Anthony Griffin, Fisher-Harris was rewarded for his hard work with an opening round call-up at the expense of fellow Kiwi forward Elijah Taylor. While it isn’t quite known why the experienced Taylor was dumped to reserve grade, Fisher-Harris was told by Griffin earlier in the week to “be ready”. “I was very excited, I didn’t know officially until Friday that I was playing but I was keen as,” he said. “The whole week coach was telling me

hat do Isaah Yeo, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and James Fisher-Harris all have in common? Well, not only are they promising Panthers stars who have risen through the rugby league ranks but, interestingly, they all made their NRL debuts in Round 1. 20-year-old Fisher-Harris became the latest youngster to don the famous Panthers NRL jumper when he ran out in sweltering conditions during Penrith’s opening round loss to Canberra. Despite the eight point defeat, it was a solid debut for Fisher-Harris who recorded 32 metres and made nine tackles during

James Fisher-Harris speaks to the media on Monday. Photo: Megan Dunn Since last year’s breakout season in the Holden Cup, Fisher-Harris was one of the names on everyone’s lips as the player they wanted to see debut in 2016. The wrecking ball said he wasn’t too aware of all the hype surrounding him during the pre-season. “I thought I was sort of undercover but a huge thanks to the fans for their support,” he said. “I must say I was surprised to debut so soon, I was thinking more like Round 20.”

to prepare well and I tried to do that to the best of my ability.” And with number ‘20’ printed on his back, Fisher-Harris finally hit the field in the 54th minute – and, boy, did he feel it. “It was a lot faster, harder and it was good going up against some of the game’s biggest names, that you’re used to watching on TV,” he said. “Coach didn’t give me any special messages, he just wanted me to do my thing – run hard, tackle hard.”

E

ven though half a century has passed, original Penrith Panthers Neil Bailey and Tom Wilson still have fond memories of playing with the club in its very first year. After years of tireless work lead by local rugby league legend Merv Cartwright, the Penrith Panthers were finally admitted into the NSWRL first grade competition in 1967. This year marks 50 seasons since the famous Penrith jumper became part of the rugby league landscape. One player who represented Penrith in 1967 was 69-year-old auto electrician Neil Bailey. Bailey began his first grade playing

career with the Panthers as a fullback and fondly remembers the excitement of the city in that very first year. “The community was very much behind the team. The Lord Mayor, everybody threw their weight behind us,” he recalls. “We had fantastic crowds back then too – 12,000 people would quite often come to our games.” Teammate Tom Wilson, who signed with the Panthers from North Sydney, remembers Penrith Stadium as a bare, grass paddock. “There were two dressing sheds, a few seats on top and no cover,” the 72-year-old said. “The ground was completely flat. It wasn’t even turf, it was grass, and there were no hills or anything like that.” The Panthers won five games in their inaugural season but one victory that stands out like it just happened yesterday

Original Panthers Tom Wilson, Neil Bailey and David Applebee. Photo: Megan Dunn The Panthers will honour surviving members of the original 1967 team when they take on the Canterbury Bulldogs tonight at Pepper Stadium. They’ll also wear a commemorative jersey. “It’ll be a special moment seeing the boys run out in that jumper,” Wilson said. “I still support the club to this day and will always be a Penrith Panther.”

was the day Penrith beat St George. “We beat St George during our first season, which was an unbelievable game,” Bailey said. “It was probably the demise of Reg Gasnier because he injured himself out there and it ended up being his last game. “To beat St George, who were virtually unbeatable prior to that, was amazing.”

IMPACT OF CHANGES I am really excited about the season ahead after the style of rugby league I saw played over the weekend. Reducing the interchange rule from 10 to eight has really had the impact on the game it was so desperately needing. We genuinely saw the big men in the game fatiguing, which as a result, opened up the game and created space and opportunities for the smaller players to take on the line and play some unstructured football, which is so refreshing to see. I do have one concern to come out of the weekend and that is the amount of injuries sustained. Now I am not suggesting that this is due to the reduced interchange, but I am certain it will be a point of interest and something that experts in the game will be keeping an eye on over the course of the season.

I would like to mention the positive effect that the Bunker has had on the game, we saw quick and clear decisions being made by the video referees and I believe that all the decisions made were 100 per cent correct. It was interesting to hear from one supporter after being at a game that you did not get the clear visions on the big screen that we get at home through the television, which is a slight negative, but that came from a one eyed Manly supporter who sits next to me in the office so his opinion does not count. In regards to the Panthers I thought there were some real positive signs against the Raiders over the weekend and they gave themselves every chance to win the game, but unfortunately their effort went unrewarded and it has also come at a cost with James Segeyaro

leaving the field with a broken arm. That leaves the Panthers without a recognised hooker for Round 2 against what looks to be a strong Bulldogs team. It is hard to rule on Round 1 form so we’ll have to see how the Panthers go against the Bulldogs before we make any big claims about the year ahead. To finish off this week’s column I would like to thank the Men of League Founda-

tion for the invitation to be part of the guest speaking panel for their season launch which took place at St Marys Leagues Club last Thursday. It was a fantastic afternoon for a very worthy cause and I was honoured to be part of it. Joining me on the panel was fellow former Panthers hooker Kevin Kingston as well as Mark Hughes. Until next week – Go the Panthers!

TRIBUTE TO OUR PAST We were all disappointed with the result last weekend against Canberra but there were definitely some encouraging signs for what lies ahead. I’d sum up our performance as ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’ – we demonstrated all three of these at different points in the contest. It’s a shame we didn’t capitalise on our opportunities after taking the lead in the second half but the Raiders were strong in front of their home crowd. The short turnaround to Thursday night gives us the chance to rectify our mistakes in a match that is more significant than most. In our 50th season it’s important to pay tribute to those who have come before, and we hope to do that in style against the Bulldogs. We’ll certainly be looking the part. The 1967 Commemorative Jersey is already a favourite with the players and staff. We had three of the guys from the 1967

side speak to the team ahead of their final training run. We need our squad to understand the significance of the people who laid the foundations for this club we now call home. They need to know about those first Panthers – the ones that forged the legacy we are now responsible for – and what they went through in order to pull on the Penrith jersey. On Thursday night we honour each and every one of them. But of course it wouldn’t be a special occasion without our members and fans turning up to lend their support. So make sure you’ve bought your membership, and got your jerseys and flags ready to go. Footy returns to Pepper Stadium and we need you all there to help us turn it into a fortress in 2016. Together we will make this 50th season something special.

LOWER GRADES » Intrust Super Premiership NSW: It

I used to struggle ... but now school work’s FUN!

wasn’t a great start to the season for Penrith’s reserve grade team after they were narrowly defeated 26-24 at the hands of Mounties. Despite going into half-time with scores locked at 14-all, the Panthers fell away in the second half as temperatures began to soar in the nation’s capital. Kiwi backrower Elijah Taylor was a late inclusion to Steve Georgallis’ line-up, but failed to make much of an impact on the field. Five-eighth Te Maire Martin was the standout for Penrith in his debut match for the club. The 20-year-old Kiwi scored a double while Maliko Filino, Andrew Heffernan and Chris Smith also crossed the line. Coach Georgallis has named another strong line-up this week for when the Panthers battle the North Sydney Bears this Saturday afternoon at Pepper Stadium.

Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly.

» Holden Cup: Penrith’s premiership

3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.

Specialist Maths or English tuition for all ages.

title defence didn’t get off to the best of starts last Saturday with the Canberra Raiders snatching victory in the final 30 seconds to defeat the defending champions 36-34. Penrith took a 10-0 lead into half-time but were up against it in the second half as the Raiders began to fire. Both sides exchanged leads multiple times throughout the second 40, but it was the Green Machine who were in front when the final siren rang. The only injuries to come out of the

match for Penrith were that to hooker Soni Luke and centre Jack Nelson. Penrith will look for their first win of the season when they take on the Canterbury Bulldogs at 5.50pm tonight (Thursday, March 10) at Pepper Stadium.

» Ron Massey Cup: Round 1 of the Ron

Massey Cup competition took place last Saturday with St Marys going down to local rivals Blacktown Workers 28-16 at St Marys Stadium. John Tuliatu, Geoff Daniela and Sam Jones all scored tries for the home side while Josh Butfield kicked two from three. The sixth-placed St Marys will look to bounce back and record their first win of the season when they battle the lastplaced Kingsgrove Colts at 12pm this Sunday at Jubilee Oval.

» SG Ball: Round 4 of the SG Ball com-

petition took place last Saturday with the Panthers losing to Illawarra 30-18 at St Marys Stadium. Penrith have now slipped to sixth position and will take on the last-placed West Coast Pirates this Saturday afternoon at Pepper Stadium.

» Harold Matthews: Round 4 of the

Harold Matthews competition took place last Saturday with Penrith hammering the Illawarra Steelers 30-0. Penrith have climbed to 11th position and will battle the last-placed South Western Sydney Academy of Sport this Saturday afternoon at Pepper Stadium.

PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Country’s new frontier KATE REID

A

dam Brand and The Outlaws are here for a good time, not a long time. The all star band, which includes country music artists Adam Brand, Drew McAlister, Travis Collins, Matt Cornell and Mike

Carr, have no plans for the future. Their aim is to get loud, rock out, and leave audiences with a grin from ear to ear. “It was put together with the idea that it would be great to go out and do it just this one time,” Adam Brand said. The idea for the super group is one that the country music star had been tossing around for more than a decade. Adam’s plan – which was simply to get a bunch of country music mates together for one killer album and tour – wasn’t an easy one to coordinate, with all five members being busy in their own right.

“All these guys have had albums out and do their own gigs in their own right, so to put them all into one band is quite unique,” he said. Though Adam’s name is out front, it’s been a team effort all the way with Adam, Drew, Travis, Matt and Mike all sharing singing duties. “Sort of like a country music boy band?” this writer suggests. “Yeah but without any cool moves,” Adam laughed. The band – whose name is a tip of the hat to the original outlaws of country music

including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings – are currently touring their debut (and possibly only) album which features a mix of covers from Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ to Jimmy Barnes’ ‘Working Class Man’. While the guys are known for their country roots, the album features plenty of rock tracks including Queen’s ‘Fat Bottom Girls’ and Poison’s ‘Nothin’ But A Good Time’. “Our music, where it sits in the country music genre, has always been sitting close to that rock and blues edge of country,” Adam said. Deciding on the tracks that would feature on the album was simply a matter of getting together a list of songs the band members loved. All five members joined in on a jam session, offering up their favourite tracks for consideration. “There was no rules, we just threw the songs in the pot that we just love,” Adam said. “The kind of songs that you’d put on a playlist if you were going on a long road trip and you just wanted something in the car so that you could wind the windows down and sing along with the wind in your hair.” This love of all things fun has permeated Adam’s career, and features heavily on the country music star’s next album, which will begin recording after the Outlaws tour wraps up. “I just find that people want to be entertained,” he said. “People want to be uplifted and come to a concert and go away feeling good, not go away feeling morbid or having more questions about the future than they did before. “I’m really just enjoying going out and entertaining people. Having people come away smiling and going ‘you know what, I really needed that. I’ve been going through a really crappy time and I just needed to come out and just let my hair down and forget about the world’. “There’s a lot of that coming through in my new album.” Adam Brand and The Outlaws will be performing at the Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, March 19 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. For more information or to purchase tickets to the show, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

See and feel the real person in counselling; there is no facade, just genuine concern, care and support. Safety is paramount and occurs naturally in the first few minutes because barriers are down and openness, warmth and your welfare are at the heart of each and every session. If you are willing to take the chance and talk about what’s happening for you, Sally will show you what it is like to be respected, heard and validated. It does take courage and determination on your part, however, your efforts will be rewarded with a truly enriching, even potentially life-changing professional relationship.

t’s not every day that a community choir from western Sydney gets asked to perform at New York’s Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts. The Shine Community Choir, based in Springwood, will have that opportunity this April, but they need community support to get them there. The choir, which regularly performs at nursing homes and at community events throughout the Blue Mountains, is aiming to raise enough money to send 10 of its members to sing with massed choirs in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Ê After debuting to the world late last month, ‘Fuller House’ has been awarded a second season by the bosses at Netflix. While the re-boot of the classic sitcom ‘Full House’ has been panned by some critics, actual fans from all over the world are falling in love with the new series, if not for the nostalgia factor alone. If you haven’t seen ‘Fuller House’ yet, the extended first episode is a thing of brilliance and I particularly enjoyed the edginess of the scriptwriting also – you can really get away with a lot more when producing for Netflix that’s for sure! Season 2 will likely air in early 2017. Ê

‘X Factor’ winner Dami Im will represent Australia in Stockholm at the ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ this May. The South Korean-born singer becomes the second official act to represent Australia after Guy Sebastian finished fifth last year. As opposed to last year’s contest where Guy was an automatic entrant into the final, Dami will have to do it the hard way and qualify through the second semi final which airs on May 12.

Ê 2015 NRL Grand Final hero and North Queensland Cowboys star Johnathan Thurston has signed a

lucrative five year deal with Channel Nine. Thurston will have a central role on ‘The Footy Show’ as a regular cohost and contributor. He will also feature in ‘Nine News’ exclusives and commentary.

Ê 14 months after being let go by Channel Nine, Emma Freedman is back with the network as the new host of ‘Wide World of Sports’. After she was surprisingly cut by Nine in December 2014, Freedman bounced around the other networks winning ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and appearing on ‘Studio 10’ along the way. They’ll never let her get away again! Ê Popular US drama ‘NCIS’ has been renewed for two more seasons while another long-running series, ‘Bones’, has been renewed for a 12th and final season. Ê The much hyped ‘All Star Family Feud’ will premiere on Channel Ten at 7.30pm this Monday, March 14. In the first of multiple one hour specials, AFL will face off against NRL, raising money for charity. The NRL team will feature Wendell Sailor, former Panthers star Preston Campbell, retired international Robbie Kearns and current Storm forward Tohu Harris. The AFL team has former coach Kevin Sheedy.

DVD The Night Before

Rated MA // KATE REID The festive season is well and truly over but this month you can relive the magic of Christmas with this fun holiday comedy from the people who brought you ‘Bad Neighbours’ and ‘This is the End’. The buddy flick stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie as best friends Ethan, Isaac and Chris. The trio have been mates since they were kids and each year for the last decade they have celebrated Christmas Eve with a night of mischief and mayhem. But with adulthood well and truly upon them, and Isaac about to become a father, the friends decide it’s time to put the tradi-

tion to bed, but not before they have one last epic outing. To make the night one they won’t forget Ethan, Isaac and Chris set out to find the Holy Grail of Christmas parties – the Nutcracka Ball. Reviews for this Christmas comedy have been mostly positive and while it may not make it to ‘Christmas comedy classic status’, this is a fun take on the holiday flick. Full to the brim with drugs, sex and vomit gags, ‘The Night Before’ will most likely appeal to fans of Rogen and his brand of comedy. Catch it on DVD and Blu-Ray now!

Tom Clancy’s The Division

Rated MA; XBox One, PS4 and PC // KATE REID It’s the game that gaming enthusiasts have been waiting for. This week sees the release of the hugely anticipated ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’. After a devastating pandemic sweeps through New York City on Black Friday, society quickly collapses into chaos. While basic services are failing, and people are falling victim to a smallpox virus spread through infected bank notes, a unit of tactical agents known as ‘The Division’ aims to restore order and find the source of the outbreak. Gamers will take on the role of a Division agent, joining forces with this autonomous unit to take back New York City. You’ll have access to state-of-the-art technology and skills upgrades as you make your way through a dangerous environment where society’s survival is in your hands.

One day an elderly woman pulled her van into writer Alan Bennett’s driveway. 15 years later she was still living there. Based on a true story – which Bennett made into a theatre production in 1999 – ‘The Lady in the Van’ stars Maggie Smith as Mary Shepherd, the woman who made

herself a home on Bennett’s property. Starting out as a begrudging favour to an eccentric homeless woman, the relationship between Shepherd and Bennett develops as Bennett learns more about this interesting woman. Mary, who Bennett discovers is really Margaret Fairchild, was a skilled pianist, attempted to be a nun, was committed to a mental health facility by her brother and then escaped only to be involved in a car accident. As the pair form a close but unexpected bond their relationship ends up having a

lasting impact on both their lives. Aiming to be as authentic as possible, ‘The Lady in the Van’ was filmed in the same location where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived. The film has received mostly positive reviews, with Maggie Smith being praised for another in a long line of outstanding performances. Joining Maggie on screen is Alex Jennings as Alan Bennett and Jim Broadbent as Underwood. ‘The Lady in the Van’ is a humorous and poignant tale of unexpected friendship.

Another spectacular show is coming! t’s back for another year! The Annual Penrith Working Truck Show will be held at the Museum of Fire on Sunday, March 20. It is anticipated by local families annually, attended by enthusiasts from across the country and loved by all who take the time to check it out.

I

Back for its 29th year, the annual show is celebrating with another huge day of non-stop entertainment, rides and unique exhibits on Sunday, March 20, that combine to create this spectacular event, which is recognised as one of Penrith’s major events. “20,000 people flock to the Museum

of Fire for the event each year, which is supported by the transport industry across Australia. This event is regarded as a ‘must see’ not only by local residents but by the entire national transport industry. We have exhibits on display from states across the country and crowds who travel from all over to

experience the show each year,” said Mark White from the Museum of Fire, who is one of the driving forces behind the event. There will be hundreds of vehicles on display, from the huge B Doubles to custom trucks, plastered with chrome detailing and spectacular airbrushing. Together with the outstanding collection of Fire Engines owned by the Museum, live entertainment will keep show attendees on their feet all day long, with country rock stars Adam Brand and the Outlaws and The Girls of Country featuring Amber Lawrence and much more. “Kids will be kept busy with a huge selection of free rides, free fairy floss, free face painting and other activities that are sure to keep parents happy too,” Mr White said. “There really is something to enjoy here for everyone and to make it better, the value for money at the Penrith Working Truck Show is unsurpassed by any other show.” Tickets for adults are $35 and with each adult ticket purchase, three children can enter for free up to 16 years (student ID required after 12 years). For this cost, all rides, entertainment and exhibits inside the show are free. Being a registered charity event, all funds from the Show will be used for the education of families in fire safety, for the preservation of fire history and supporting local firefighters, who are helping to run the event. See www.pwts.com.au for more details on the show.

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES

LEO

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

With planetary emphasis in your contemplation zone, you’ll feel more reflective than usual. Use the power of your imagination to solve problems and soar into higher realms of creativity. Your motto for the moment is from Albert Einstein, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere”. Personal projects are favoured on the weekend, when the terrific fire trine encourages you to tackle tasks with plenty of passion and enthusiasm.

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

The Jupiter/Pluto trine is fabulous for work, business and financial matters. Lady Luck is definitely on your side as you make positive changes and accept exciting new challenges. And, for some lucky Lions, an ambitious idea is set to boost your bank balance! Then, courtesy of the fire trine, it’s a wonderful weekend to work hard on cultivating your Cat creativity. So take the time to express yourself as you write, act, dance, draw, paint, perform or sing up a storm.

TAURUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Are you ready, willing and able to capitalise on good luck? This week courtesy of the mid-week Jupiter/Pluto trine you’ll be given the opportunity to lead and/or influence those around you. Others are looking for you to come up with the goods so get organised and don’t disappoint! The one thing that will stop you from achieving your goals is impatience. So smart Sagittarians will calm down, cool down, and recalibrate to a slower, steadier and more sustainable pace.

VIRGO

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

The week starts with a relationship glitch but then Lady Luck is on your side midweek and friendships are particularly favoured, as you link up with pals from home and far away. You’re in the mood to help a loved one through a rough patch or cheer up a colleague who is down-in-the-dumps. Children, creativity, sport, hobbies, travel and international connections are all highlighted. The week will work best if you share your good luck and generosity with those around you.

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Expect some drama early in the week, when poor communication could disrupt an otherwise solid relationship. Two-way conversation is the secret to resolving difficulties. So keep the lines of communication open, and resist the temptation to be critical or judgmental of others. Mid-week onwards is the time to initiate ideas and create waves within your circle of influence. But steer clear of negative thinkers! Make sure the people around you are a positive and inspiring influence.

GEMINI

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Pluto is moving slowly through your sign, which boosts your ambition. But it also ensures that – if you don’t play by the rules – then you will get caught. This week the Jupiter/Pluto trine gives you a welcome boost as you turn up the Capricorn charisma, win professional friends and influence important people. Inspiration for the week is from Albert Einstein [born on May 14, 1879: “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

LIBRA

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

The more impulsive and hasty you are on Monday and Tuesday, the more disappointing the days will be. Short-cuts will get you nowhere fast. Strive to be physically organised and mentally disciplined. The mid-week stars sharpen your problem-solving skills, as you look at issues in a deeper and vaster way. Open and honest communication is the secret to a wonderful weekend. There’ll be opportunities to expand your peer group, but don’t neglect your long-term friends.

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Have you been burning the candle at both ends? You’ve got a lot of commitments on your plate but try to put aside some special ‘me time’ this week Libra. Solitude is soul food for you at the moment. When it comes to a frustrating family matter, avoid quick fixes. You’ll find a solution if you are patient and look for crucial information that is hidden deep beneath the surface. Then you will truly understand the current complexities, and the path ahead will be clearer.

CANCER

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Your involvement with a group, club or organisation has others looking to you for extra inspiration. Avoid walking around in a daze though – you need to prioritise your current commitments and clarify your long-term goals for the future. If you work out a firm direction forward, then financial luck is waiting in the wings via a new job, promotion, bonus or gift. Use your networking skills to drum up support, and don’t be afraid to ask others for assistance when you need it.

SCORPIO

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016

SAGITTARIUS

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Reach out and help others, both within your circle of family and friends and within your local neighbourhood. The close community connections you foster now will prove beneficial in the future. As fellow Cancerian Princess Diana said, “Everyone has the potential to give something back”. When you’re communicating with others, avoid being superficial and glossing over important details.

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

This week’s auspicious Jupiter/Pluto trine encourages you to broaden your horizons, expand your circle of influence, and make positive changes (personally plus within your local community or further afield). But Scorpio is the sign of intense extremes, and you can have trouble de-stressing and winding down. As we celebrate the Equinox on Sunday, March 20, strive to bring more balance and relaxation into your busy world.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

With the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Neptune in your sign, you’re the quintessential Piscean at the moment as your creativity and compassion are on display for all to see. Partnerships are given a welcome boost, as Jupiter and Pluto increase optimism and help you reform a rickety relationship that’s been experiencing problems. Financial matters and business ventures are favoured on the weekend.

PET HEALTH

Over the last few weeks, we have seen several cases of parvovirus and we thought it would be appropriate to rediscuss this awful disease. Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus in dogs that can produce life threatening illness. The virus attacks by rapidly dividing cells in a dog’s body – especially the gastrointestinal tract. The symptoms of parvovirus are lethargy, loss of appetite, severe vomiting and foul smelling and often bloody diarrhoea. These symptoms lead to severe dehydration. Parvovirus is

and involves aggressive fluid therapy to rehydrate the dog, antibiotics, pain relief, anti-nausea medication and sometimes even blood transfusions and other blood products. Unfortunately, not all treated animals survive. Parvovirus can be PREVENTED. Ensuring your dog is up to date with vaccinations is essential to ensure that your dog does not contract this fatal disease. Puppies should have a course of three vaccinations and adults require a yearly booster. If you have any questions or need to update your dog’s vaccination status, please contact us.

extremely contagious and can be transmitted by any person, animal or object that comes in contact with an infected dog’s faeces. The virus is highly resistant and can live in the environment for many many months. It is common for dogs to pick up the virus from streets and parks. Parvovirus can be diagnosed with a simple faecal test. Treatment is intensive

LEGAL MATTERS

Harrowing footage has emerged via major media outlets this week showing a man named Shane Cuthbert physically and mentally abusing his wife. In an interview with ‘A Current Affair’ the victim has told of countless episodes of horrific abuse that left her battered and bruised which were filmed by her husband for his own sadistic pleasure. Stories like these undoubtedly raise questions about the powers of the victims of abuse to be protected from their attackers. This article looks at AVOs and how they

work in New South Wales. There are typically two types of AVO. The first is an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order and it is made where the people involved are related or have been party to a domestic or intimate relationship. The second type is an Apprehended Personal Violence Order which is made where the people involved are not related or are not in a domes-

tic or intimate relationship, for example neighbours or someone who is being stalked or intimidated by another person. An AVO is not a criminal charge, it is an Order for future protection, meaning it restricts a person’s behaviour to prevent them from causing any harm or threat of violence to the victim. There are two ways a person can apply for an AVO. You can make a private application, meaning that you go to your Local Court or engage a solicitor to make the application for you. The second way an AVO can be taken out is by the Police who are at liberty to make an application on a person’s behalf. If an AVO is taken out against you, you have the right to defend it by going to Court. If you do not agree with an AVO application against you the Court will either refer the matter to a Community Justice Centre for mediation or the Court will want to hear evidence by way of a court hearing to determine whether the AVO should be granted. If a person breaches an AVO it is a criminal offence. The most severe punishment for breaching an AVO is imprisonment.

Walker FINANCE

Everyone should be an investor

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

“all your eggs in the one basket”. For most of us, our biggest investment will be our home. Paying off a mortgage to own your own home is an investment in real estate and it forms part of your portfolio. Most of you will also have superannuation which also forms part of your portfolio. Superannuation funds can invest in various types of assets

so you should take the time to discuss your options with your superannuation fund to make sure you understand and are happy with how they are investing your super. Investing wisely outside of your own home and superannuation can be a great way to build up your portfolio and add to your financial security. When investing further you could consider a range of different assets such as shares, cash deposits, real estate, managed funds or bonds. Remember, by investing across a variety of assets which is called ‘diversifying your portfolio’ you can reduce your exposure to shocks within any one particular type of asset. For example, let’s say you invested in real estate and prices started to come down. You might then wish you had the safety and security of having some money invested in cash deposits to help you ride out the downturn. Or vice versa, if real estate is doing really well, you might want some exposure to those returns rather than just the traditionally more conservative returns of cash deposits. It’s also important to diversify within each type of asset. For example if you decided to invest some of your money in shares, it wouldn’t be wise to put all your money in one company or one industry.

10 years ago the movie ‘Superman Returns’ hit the big screen. In this movie, which was on our TV’s last weekend, Superman had been away for several years. On returning to the city of Metropolis, even Lois Lane was not that impressed, having won a major writing award for an article in her newspaper, The Daily Planet, saying: “The world doesn’t need a saviour and neither do I”. 10 years later, we need to ask, is it true? Was Lois Lane right? Does the world no longer need a saviour? Do

Does the world still need a saviour? you need a saviour? Have we become so able to solve our problems and deal with humanity’s issues that we

no longer need someone to rescue us, to put things right? It would hardly seem so! Today, our world is more educated than ever. Health and medical improvements mean life expectancy extends to 80 and 90 years of age. We are the most technologically advanced of any period of time. As for wealth, living standards have never been higher. Yet, the TV news, even our own lives, tells something is desperately wrong; we are not the people we want to be. In the Bible’s book of Luke, when the angel announces Jesus’ birth, he says, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you.” Why is this announcement of a saviour such good news? Because Jesus is the one promised by God who will put things right in life. Trusting Jesus brings direction and hope, whereas so often in this world, all we have is despair.

I’m a big advocate of investing – everyone should do it. When you do up your budget you should include an allocation, no matter how small, for investing because, even in small amounts if it’s done across your life, it will change your life. Anyone considering investing will no doubt come across the phrase ‘diversify your portfolio’. But what exactly does this mean? Your portfolio is your collection of financial assets, and the concept of diversifying means holding a number of different types of financial assets so that you don’t have

Reid NUTRITION

For most of the last decade I haven’t eaten red meat. For much of that time I also haven’t eaten poultry. Why? Well to put it simply, I don’t really enjoy red meat or poultry enough to want an animal to die for it. There’s many different points on the spectrum from meat eaters to vegans, who don’t consume any animal products including meat, dairy, eggs and honey. While the ethical debate is not one I would even consider getting into in this column, I can offer information on the subject from a nutrition point of view.

Is giving up meat a healthy option? Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong.

Transition into cooler weather by covering up in style! One of my favourite pieces to wear is the timeless trench. A staple for all budgets the opportunities are endless for creating looks with the options available in store at Westfield Penrith. Going into the cooler months we often overlook the chic trench coat because we feel we have to reserve it only for the middle of winter. With these tips on styling the classic trench, it can easily work for all occasions! A lightweight trench is a modern cover-up that you

Great for early mornings are the textured warmer coats. A 70s favourite is making a comeback this season with blue suede being featured in outerwear. A more luxe choice I can’t resist is the premium suede collections that can be seen from Jeanswest and Bardot at Westfield Penrith. 100 per cent suede leather, the navy ‘Hendric’ trench from Bardot features a sophisticated long-line with a large lapel. Belt this jacket around your waist and add some over the knee boots in a nude or grey and you will feel like a rockstar.

can find in a variety of fabrics like beautiful, breezy chiffons and flowy cotton. These are great to add to your wardrobe as it gives elegance to your outfit. You can team a delicate trench in a khaki colour with some denim shorts and a black singlet; this creates a polished casual vibe. Wear this look with some black ankle boots and a metallic geometrical clutch.

There is a substantial body of evidence to show that vegetarian/vegan diets offer many health benefits. Vegetarians/vegans tend to have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and lower rates of heart disease. This is unsurprising when you consider that those who follow a vegetarian/vegan diet consume more veges. Vegetables are low in satu-

rated fat, high in fibre and packed full of nutrients. In saying that, it is important to understand how to meet your nutrient requirements when giving up animal products to avoid deficiencies, especially with regards to calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3, which can be lacking in an ill planned vegetarian diet. Vitamin B12 is especially important for vegans as it can only be obtained through animal products including meat, dairy and eggs. Those who exclude these foods will need to consume it in supplement form or through vitamin B12 fortified foods. If you are considering going vegetarian or vegan, firstly, good for you. I have a lot of respect for those who are willing to give up the foods they love for ethical or environmental reasons. But it is important to consider your health when making these changes and it is advisable to speak to a dietitian who can help you make the transition. For those who feel too daunted at the idea of giving up meat altogether my advice would be to start by simply adding a couple of meat free meals into your week. And don’t worry if you don’t like tofu. These days there’s many different plant based foods on offer.

Astra proves its class for Holden

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

he new Astra is European ‘Car of the Year 2016’ – winner of one of the world’s most prestigious motoring awards. The 58-strong jury of automotive journalists from 22 European countries awarded the Astra a total of 309 points, versus 294 for the Volvo XC90 and 202 for the Mazda MX-5. The ‘Car of the Year 2016’ trophy was presented to Opel CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann by COTY president Hakan Matson on the eve of the first press day at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show. The Astra emerged as the winner from a field of seven COTY finalists. More than 40 new cars, from sporty roadsters to premium limousines and sports utility vehicles, were among the contenders. “The new Astra represents the start of a new era at Opel and victory in this year’s ‘Car of the Year’ competition shows that we are on the right track,” Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann said. “It is an honour for us to receive such a prestigious award from leading automotive journalists.” Holden Executive Director of Sales, Peter Keley, said Astra would redefine Holden in the important small car segment. “We already knew that Astra was a world-beating vehicle and this latest prestigious award cements those credentials,” he said.

Angus aims for Olympics

enrith basketballer Angus Brandt is one step closer to living out his Olympic dream after he was one of 26 players selected in the Australian Boomers Olympic squad. The 26-year-old Sydney Kings centre was selected in the extended squad alongside several NBA stars including Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Dante Exum and Matthew Dellavedova. If Brandt is chosen in Australia’s final squad of 12, he’ll be the second Penrith basketball junior, after Matt Nielsen, to compete at an Olympic Games. “What we’ve done is ensured we have depth in all positions which will help us if injuries ever occur,” Boomers head coach, Andrej Lemanis said of the squad. “We have a fantastic core group of players that has been with us for a significant amount of time now and we have some exciting young talent that we have added to the squad.” To make the final Olympic team, Brandt will need to impress selectors before a reduced squad of 16 is named ahead of selection camp in early July. That camp will give Boomers coaching staff the opportunity to make their final decision ahead of Rio. “The timeframe dictates that we can only have one camp but it is the way it has been for years so it’s not unusual,” Lemanis said. Lemanis added that he and his coaching staff know exactly what they’re looking for when narrowing the squad down to 16. “It’s a case of the selection staff taking into account previous history with the Boomers, current form, injuries, team balance, chemistry and putting it all together,” he said. Once in camp, the Boomers will be subject to practice matches as well as an inter-squad scrimmage to fully assess each player’s contribution in a playing environment. Brandt averaged 5.8 rebounds and 8.1 points in his second season in the NBL. He recently took his talents to Europe to play in the Lithuanian Basketball League.

Penrith face tough task in decider Story continued from » p. 80 After demolishing Manly in the semi finals, the Panthers had a real battle on their hands when they took on the second-placed Blacktown in the finals. Penrith took out Game 1 last Wednesday 13-4 before Blacktown stormed back to even the series with a 13-4 thrashing of their own last Saturday night. With the series in the balance Penrith managed to show great composure to get their minds back on the task to defeat Blacktown 9-1 in Game 3 and advance to the decider. “Our pitching wasn’t great on Saturday night. We threw a lot of balls and walks which put us behind the eight ball,” Summersford said. “After the game I told the boys they needed to maintain patience with the bat, and they did just that on Sunday.” After losing to Macarthur on two occasions already this season, Penrith will need to be at their absolute best to overcome the competition’s best team. “There’s always a bitter rivalry between the western suburbs teams and it’ll be no different in the Grand Final,” Summersford said. “Macarthur are a very good side.”

Penrith BMX Club pleased with performances in Bathurst after several podium finishes NATHAN TAYLOR

iders from the Penrith BMX Club have come away with multiple podium finishes at the 2016 BMX National Championships held in Bathurst last week. Penrith BMX Club riders were up against some serious competition with riders from all around Australia and the world descending on the newly constructed facility in the state’s central west. Riders from New Zealand, the United States, Japan and Columbia also took to the track to go up against Aussies for an elusive national plate. Penrith BMX Club had 28 riders competing at the prestigious competition with a number of them coming home with outstanding results. One local rider who finished just short of victory on two occasions was racing veteran Sandy Cameron, who came second in the country in both the 20” and 24” Cruiser class events for 44-49 Women. Fellow local rider Chris Page also got a spot on the podium after he finished third in the 20” event for 40-44 Men. He also finished seventh in the 24” event. Rider Liam Underhill finished a valiant fifth in the 24” Cruiser class for 25-29

Born to die.

Photo: Reflex Photography Men. But it wasn’t just the adults who were making an impact on the track, it was Penrith BMX’s youngsters as well. Declan Jaehne finished sixth in the 20” 15 Boys national series event and seventh in the BMX National Championships.

After a sensational effort in Bathurst, Penrith BMX Club will be hoping to continue their form at next year’s BMX National Championships, to be held in Brisbane. Your say: Tweet us @wwpenrith.

These boys have only just hatched, but they’re already just one second away from death. If they’d been born with their mother, they’d be snuggling under her warm wing now, continuing the chirping ‘conversation’ they started while they were still in their shells. But instead, they were born in a factory that breeds laying hens for the Australian egg industry. Unable to produce eggs themselves, these fluffy baby chicks are considered merely ‘waste products’. Sorted and discarded, these boys and their brothers have been tossed onto a conveyor belt that ends in the metal teeth of a mincing machine. Every year in Australia, some 3 million day-old male chicks are gassed or macerated while they’re still alive. This is standard practice industry wide. In cage, barn, free range and organic egg laying businesses, this wholesale slaughter of male newborns is considered to be just a normal part of doing business. But you don’t have to accept that. While it’s too late for these boys, you have the power to change the world for chicks just like them. Hope for these innocent animals rests with each and every one of us. By reducing the demand for eggs, you can help prevent countless more chicks from being born – only to die on their very first day of life.

Wanderers lose grip on competition lead Loss to Brisbane allows Adelaide to take top position as A-League enters the home stretch NATHAN TAYLOR

estern Sydney Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne says the team is remaining positive despite losing their position at the top of the ALeague table. The Wanderers slipped to second on the ladder following a late 3-2 loss to Brisbane last Friday night. The Wanderers trailed the Roar for most of the match after Jamie Maclaren netted his 13th goal of the season after just five minutes. However the match, played at Suncorp Stadium, burst to life in the final quarter with a whopping four goals hitting the back of the net. Tony Popovic’s men looked to have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after Andreu’s penalty and Romeo Castelen’s second goal in as many matches put the visitors in front. But in typical Roar fashion, the home side hit back through Maclaren’s second of the evening and Dimi Petratos’ winner. “It wasn’t the best result but there were a few positives to take away from that,” Redmayne said.

W

Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne saves a near certain goal. Photo: Megan Dunn “We dominated a lot of the game and I think doing that to a team like Brisbane, who normally run over a team, is a fantastic positive for us to come away with.” The narrow loss sees football’s form side Adelaide United rocket to first position with five games to go. This Sunday afternoon the Wanderers will look to regain first position when they

travel to Hunter Stadium to take on the eighth-placed Newcastle Jets. Despite losing to Perth 2-0 on Monday night, the Jets were in a run of good form with three losses and one draw during their previous four matches. “They had a disappointing result on Monday and will be looking to bounce back,” Redmayne said.

“Newcastle are a strong, resilient side and we know we’ve got to match them and be up for the fight. “It’s really important we get the three points this week, so we are right back up there.” Kick off between the Wanderers and Jets is at 5pm on Sunday. The match will be broadcast live on Fox Sports.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith have defeated Sydney University in Round 14 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. Sydney University won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors scored 176 before being dismissed after 59 overs. Ryan Smith was the pick of the bowlers for Penrith with 5/53. When Penrith hit the crease late on Day 1, they managed 1/65 before stumps. When play resumed on Day 2 last Saturday morning, the home side reached their opponent’s total with ease scoring 8/207. Tim Cummins was best with the bat for Penrith with 48. The second-placed Penrith will take on the 13th-placed Blacktown in the final round of the regular season this Saturday morning at Joe McAleer Oval.

Penrith will play the Hills Hornets at 3pm this Saturday at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.

BASKETBALL: Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League men’s side have lost their opening round game against the Inner West Bulls 79-76. Adam Lulka was best for the Panthers with 23 points. Penrith will play Blacktown at 5pm this Saturday at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre. Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s team got their season off to a good start narrowly defeating the Hornsby Spiders 67-65 in their first round clash. Emily Potts was best for the Panthers with 24 points.

FOOTBALL: It was the perfect start to NPL life for the Western Sydney Wanderers last Sunday after a second half explosion saw them defeat reigning champions Spirit FC 6-0 in their first ever match in the NPL2. The win was on the back of a five goal haul by substitute Lachlan Scott following a tight first half where neither team was on top. The result also means that the Wanderers are the first NSW-based A-League club to win a match in NPL2. Up next for the Wanderers is the Mt Druitt Town Rangers at Popondetta Park this Saturday at 7pm.

AFL: The GWS Giants have stunned crosstown rivals the Sydney Swans in their NAB Challenge clash last Friday night at Drummoyne Oval. The Giants were all over the Swans from the opening bounce and went on to win 94-60. In his first game back since injuring his left ankle in Round 11 last year, ruckman Shane Mumford came off in the second quarter and didn’t return. He is, however, expected to be fit for Round 1. GWS take on the Brisbane Lions this Sunday afternoon with Giants coach Leon Cameron stating he’ll take a near full strength line-up to the Gold Coast for the encounter.

After surprising the league last season to win the 2014/15 premiership, the Panthers will now take on the Orioles in a best of three Grand Final series. With relatively the same team plus a few new faces, Panthers coach Shane Summersford knew he had the side to compete and once again return to the top. “I believe with some of the acquisitions we made during the off-season that we had a better side this year than last year,” he told the Weekender. “We had Greg Collins come over from the United States and Dennis Nover come up from second grade while Penrith boy James Yates returned home after a season in Blacktown.” After finishing the regular season in third place, the Panthers qualified for their second straight Grand Final following big wins against Manly and Blacktown in the playoffs.
