Man left with serious facial injuries after 4am assault in St Marys

A bloodied cricket bat left behind by three men on Queen Street in St Marys told the story of a horrifying random attack on Tuesday morning.

The bat is a key piece of evidence in the investigation into the assault, which police do not believe was targeted.

A man was left with serious facial injuries following the incident at about 4am on Tuesday. He was on his way to work when he was set upon.

Police are now desperate to find his attackers, who escaped in a car and remain on the run.

Vicious attack on the way to work Bloodied cricket bat left behind by Queen Street attackers as victim nurses serious head injuries EMILY NEWTON

man is recovering in hospital with head and facial injuries after being seriously assaulted in St Marys by three men armed with a cricket bat.

At about 4am on Tuesday, February 28, it is alleged that the victim was walking along Queen Street when the three men came out of a vehicle before assaulting him.

Police were told the males then left in a grey Range Rover.

Detective Inspector Barry Vincent, of St Marys Local Area Command, said the attack is not believed to be targeted.

“The assault is certainly of concern for us,” Detective Inspector Vincent said.

“At this stage it would appear that the gentleman was on his way to work when he was attacked by three people that were unknown to him.”

The male, aged in his late 30s, remains in a stable condition at Westmead Hospital.

“The injuries he has is a number of lacerations to his head and his face,” Detective Inspector Vincent said.

“They’re still assessing his injuries to find out whether he has any fractures or broken bones.”

A crime scene was established and investigations into the incident are continuing.

A bloodied bat was left behind at the crime scene and will form a crucial part of the investigation.

“Why they would have a bat at that time of the morning certainly raises some questions for us and will be a part of the investigations,” Detective Inspector Vincent said.

“An attack to anybody, striking them to the head with a blunt object, can certainly have the potential to cause serious injury or death.”

The male victim had some property taken including his wallet, personal items and a small amount of cash.

“We’re certainly keen to find them and put them before the courts,” Detective Inspector Vincent said.

“There were a number of witnesses who stopped and provided aid and some details to police on attendance.

“We’d ask that those persons contact us again just to make sure that we have been in contact with all people who may have been able to see anything.”

Police are appealing for public assistance after the incident and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

here is no right or wrong answer when it comes to the debate over penalty rates, which flared up last week when the Fair Work Commission ruled to make significant changes to what people are paid for working on Sundays and public holidays across a number of industries.

Your take on the ruling is likely to be influenced by your personal situation and how closely you’re affected by the changes.

One thing that is certain is that hundreds of thousands of people across the country will be worse off every week.

While some businesses may choose not to pass on the cuts and others won’t be affected as their employees are contracted under an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, the reality is that many people will see a sharp drop in their pay that will mean making ends meet is just that bit tougher.

The decision handed down by the Fair Work Commission is 550 pages long but the main argument being made by experts and the public as a whole is that this will generally lead to more employment and more businesses opening on Sundays.

I call bulls*** on that.

Do you seriously think that a retail outlet that might currently have three people working on a Sunday is going to have four or five people working there after the rules change?

Or what about that great theory (or myth) that a cafe that currently doesn’t open on Sundays will suddenly push open the doors, just because a waiter working there is now earning penalty rates of 150 per cent instead of 175.

If you believe that, then I’ve got a great friend in Nigeria I want to introduce you to who has a million dollars he needs to deposit into a bank account just for a few weeks.

The Fair Work Commission’s decision will absolutely save businesses money, but the suggestion that they will reinvest that money directly into more staff is fantasy stuff.

Some may, but most won’t.

The problem is that many businesses and business advocate organisations will say they will hire more people or open longer, as it’s the ‘right’ answer to suit the argument to cut rates.

The truth and the statistics long-term will be very, very telling.

The other argument that emerges is that we’re now a 24/7 society, so we need to simply ‘suck it up’ and work when the demand is there.

That argument is usually made by people who work 9am-5pm Monday to Friday and enjoy the benefits of having retail and food outlets open for them to enjoy on weekends.

Things may have changed significantly over the last 50-odd years but a 24/7 society we are not.

Most people still work usual office hours – peak hour on public transport or our clogged roads prove that.

The last time I checked, Parliament doesn’t sit on the weekend.

I can’t collect a parcel from the Post Office on a Sunday, or renew my driver’s licence.

And the Fair Work Commission itself?

9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. And not a second later, I’m sure.

You get the picture.

The 24/7 society argument is convenient but it’s not really all that true.

Pretty much the only thing I can do 24 hours a day in Penrith is buy a couple of handy bowls or tea towels from K-Mart.

The truth is most of us would argue against our employers if we were asked to work Sundays. We would see it as an imposition and demand compensation.

I’m no Ross Greenwood and I don’t have any fancy letters after my name, but I’m just struggling to buy the arguments put forward to justify the cut.

At the end of the day we’re taking from some of our most vulnerable people in the workforce on the forlorn hope that it might create further employment.

It’s a mighty gamble.

While the Fair Work Commission made this decision independently, there is very little doubt that this will become one of the hottest political issues of the year.

Despite being the man who actually gave the Commission the power to make decisions on penalty rates when he was a Minister, Bill Shorten is likely to position himself as the Sunday Saviour.

He will go hard on this issue and do whatever he can to shift blame to the Turnbull Government, which is likely to wear much of the brunt of the public’s view on this, even if it had little control over the decision.

An election may be more than two years away, but this is the biggest workplace and employment debate since WorkChoices.

And while a lot of water will go under the bridge between now and 2019, the Fair Work Commission last week almost certainly handed Labor its platform for the election.

Council gives green light to Jimmy’s Fernhill gig JADE ALIPRANDI

ussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes is set to play in our own backyard when he performs in a boutiquestyle concert at Fernhill Estate this May. While several concerns have been raised from members of the public and Penrith Councillors about the concert, there was major support for the event at Monday night’s Council meeting.

Submissions made by residents raised concerns about noise and traffic impacts, site suitability, heritage, social and economic benefits, event management and the notification process.

Current tenant of Fernhill Estate, Thomas Lawson, addressed the meeting, saying it would be a great opportunity for the local region.

“It presents Penrith and the Mulgoa Valley with the opportunity to prove we are here,” he said.

“We have worked very carefully to create this boutique-style event and Jimmy agreeing to perform in our backyard is an opportunity we can’t afford to lose.

“It’s an opportunity to showcase the estate and highlight Penrith as an important tourist destination.”

the idea, including Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen, Bernard Bratusa and Greg Davies.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the people of Penrith – if 5000 people come here and fill their cars up or have lunch and buy a drink, it’s going to put a boom in our economy,” Cr Hitchen said.

Cr Bratusa said it’s important that events like this can be showcased at the Mulgoabased estate.

“I’m definitely in favour of the recommendation,” he said.

“Fernhill is an icon in the city of Penrith... and Mr Lawson deserves our thanks for bringing it to us.”

Cr Greg Davies said the concert has wider benefits to the city as well.

“It’s the perfect showcase not only for Fernhill but for Penrith too,” he said.

“I’ve been saying for ages we need drawcards for Penrith and it’s something we should embrace as much as we can.”

The one-off event is set to be held on Sunday, May 7.

The concert is limited to 5000 people and will end by 10pm.

Cr Mark Davies also added another recommendation to the report for Council to use the opportunity to move the next ballet event to Fernhill Estate.

Council rubbishes plan for incinerator Councillors and State Opposition call on Government to reject plan for controversial waste facility JADE ALIPRANDI

number of Penrith Councillors are against the development of a proposed ‘waste to energy’ facility at the back of Erskine Park.

At Monday night’s Council meeting, Labor Councillor Todd Carney moved a motion for Council to reject the proposed incinerator, in its submission to the Department of Planning and Environment.

The proposed incinerator would be built on Honeycomb Drive in Eastern Creek, that backs on to both Erskine Park and the M4 Motorway.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car and Penrith Councillors Ben Price, Greg Davies and Todd Carney met on Wednesday to discuss the impacts this would have on the community.

“After overwhelming feedback from local residents as well as concerns regarding environment and safety impacts, it is clear to me Eastern Creek is not an appropriate location for this incinerator,” Ms Car said.

Cr Carney said the effects of waste management have gone on long enough.

“Over many years the people of Erskine Park, St Clair and Colyton have had to put up with the impacts of waste facilities, they should not be burdened by yet another waste facility, which is untested and unproven in Australia.”

Cr Carney also called on Member for

Mulgoa Tanya Davies to publicly reject the project as it lies in her electorate.

Mrs Davies said she has been taking residents’ concerns seriously and continues to liaise with her Cabinet colleagues in relation to the issue.

“Since last year, when the Energy from Waste Facility was first proposed, I have been working closely with the Ministers for the Environment and Planning, raising

the concerns that have been made to me from residents of the Mulgoa community,” she said.

The decision to approve the incinerator will be determined by the Liberal Planning Minister Anthony Roberts.

The project has attracted widespread criticism due to its proximity to homes, the impacts it could have on the community and the type of waste entering the facility.

he new-look Penrith Station is starting to take shape.

The drawn out process has been met with residents’ continued frustrations during the construction period over parking and accessibility.

But commuters heading to work on Monday would have noticed major changes after a marathon weekend saw a giant canopy lifted into place over the concourse, while significant track work also took place.

“This spectacular new 1400 square metre structure which now sits over Penrith Station is one of the largest of its kind in the suburban rail network,” said Penrith MP Stuart Ayres.

“Work on installing the canopy started at 6pm on Friday night and continued through the weekend, with the last of the 13 pieces put in place late on Sunday night.”

In the coming months the new overhead concourse will be further improved with denver oak ceilings and glass panel windows.

“Each module on the canopy weighs around eight tonnes and took around

four hours to install. It is a wonderful centrepiece for the new-look station that has been designed to support a growing population well into the future,” Mr Ayres said.

The major upgrade of Penrith Station is being delivered by the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver safe, modern and accessible public transport infrastructure across the state.

When completed, customers will benefit from a new station concourse, accessible toilets and an improved transport interchange.

The NSW Government is also building a new multi-storey commuter car park north of the station, which will provide customers with around 430 new spaces, as well as lifts, CCTV and lighting.

Mr Ayres thanked local commuters for their ongoing patience.

Funding needed to keep up the fight Alzheimer’s Australia calls for action as the war against dementia becomes more and more costly EMILY NEWTON

his year, dementia is estimated to cost Australians a massive $14.67 billion.

And that figure is expected to skyrocket in the next 40 years, according to a report released by Alzheimer’s Australia that calls for more funding.

Irene McGrath, who cares for her husband John in their home at Werrington County, says more funding is “absolutely necessary”.

“It’s such a specialised area, it’s just not like normal care,” Ms McGrath said.

In response to the report, Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt announced that the Government had committed $200 million over five years to dementia research.

“Our clear goal is that every Australian living with dementia will have access to the same quality of care, tailored to their needs, no matter where they live or who they are,” Mr Wyatt said.

The announcement is welcomed by Ms McGrath, who feels that more training is needed, particularly in hospitals and nursing homes.

“I feel strongly about every component of dementia training,” she said.

Her husband was first diagnosed in 2013, despite having no family history of dementia.

“There are many causes that they don’t know, but for John it is the result of a brain injury,” Ms McGrath said.

“I remember the words the professor said, ‘It’s what the footballers will get’.”

When diagnosed, the couple found crucial support in local services including the Anglicare Dementia Advisory Service, which they currently rely on every week for help.

Ms McGrath said there is an increased need for dementia specific counsellors for both individuals diagnosed and their families.

“A dementia specific counsellor is able to understand more than perhaps an ordinary counsellor who may not have gone through that,” she said.

“From a carer’s point of view, as you move on the journey through the disease, the support you need from early diagnosis to as it develops through the stages grows all the time.

“It is impossible to handle on your own, it’s just one of those things.”

The proposal is an Integrated Development. The application seeks approval from the NSW Rural Fire Service – Rural Fires Act 1997.

Charges against footy player’s former partner dismissed

The woman who posted “revenge porn” and made death threats on social media to Panthers rugby league star Bryce Cartwright has had her charges dismissed in court.

Cartwright’s former girlfriend, Brittany Hura, fronted Penrith Local Court last Friday for a Section 32 hearing, with Magistrate Georgia Knight finding there were sufficient grounds for the 25-yearold to be dealt with under the Mental Health Act. Hura was charged in December with ‘intimidate with intent to fear’ and ‘use a carriage service to menace/harass or offend’ after posting a number of serious threats and nude photos targeting the NRL player on social media.

While Magistrate Knight said it was impossible to overlook the fact Hura was “labouring under a mental health condition at the time”, she didn’t accept the offences were “quite as impulsive” as the defence made out.

She said Hura had to “go to the trouble” of making the video, uploading it and the photos, and then took time to go back and caption one of them, which she found was done to inflict “ultimate humiliation” on the high-profile sportsman.

“Her intention was to do maximum damage to him and his reputation,” Magistrate Knight said.

“She could have simply sent the death threats by text.”

A clinical psychiatrist report tendered to the court concluded Hura was suffering from an adjustment disorder and severe depression and anxiety at the time of the offence, compromising her ability to make sound judgments, the court heard.

“Although these are extremely serious matters… threats of harm and death on Facebook for all to see… I will ultimately deal with it under the Act,” Magistrate Knight determined.

She said “revenge porn” and the sharing of intimate photographs was a “preva-

lent type of offending”, but one of deep mistrust.

“The offence involved the abuse of the power that social media gives everyone these days,” she said.

Hura was discharged into the care of her mother and is subject to a two-year community treatment plan as well as a twoyear AVO precluding her from contacting Cartwright or coming within 250 metres of where he is known to live or work.

Meat thief to stay behind bars until at least May

A clumsy thief caught red-handed with hundreds of dollars worth of pre-packaged meat has been ordered to spend more time behind bars.

Sporting a bald head, beard and rats tail, Luke King appeared in the dock of Penrith Local Court last Thursday to be sentenced on two counts of shoplifting and one count of failing to comply with his reporting obligations.

The court heard the 23-year-old fleeced Woolworths and Aldi of more than $500 worth of goods, including hundreds of dollars worth of pre-packaged scotch fillet, when he raided the supermarket giants in separate attacks late last year.

But his attempt at a quick getaway from St Marys Village Shopping Centre was thwarted when he crashed his BMX bike into the western entrance doors and landed on the floor.

He was detained by police a short time later.

The court heard the former Saddington Street, St Marys and Rogers Street, Kingswood resident had only been out of jail for several months when he “fell back into drug use” and failed to report his change of address for the child protection register.

He was taken back into custody in November last year after violating his parole.

His lawyer told the court her client had abstained from all drug use – the first time since he was a teenager – and was “a young person with a lot more insight”

than before. However, Magistrate Georgia Knight said in her view the matters were too serious for a Section 9 bond.

“I know your intention while in custody is to keep on the straight and narrow, but your history does not support you,” she said.

“You have a lot of work to do when you get out of jail so you don’t come back to court.

“It’s encouraging that you haven’t been on drugs for three months, but you’ve been in jail,” she added, with King giving a wry smile in agreement.

He was sentenced to 10 months’ jail with a non-parole period of seven months. With time already served he will be eligible for release on parole on May 18.

Man with long list of charges appeals jail sentence

A disqualified driver who showed “flagrant disregard” for court orders preventing him from getting behind the wheel of a car has been sentenced to 12 months in jail.

Oscar Santa Ana showed little emotion as he was lead down to the cells after appearing before Penrith Local Court last week to be sentenced for the latest in a long line of driving while disqualified charges.

The 30-year-old faced three separate matters of ‘drive while disqualified’, some of which occurred against the backdrop of speeding, drink driving and using an unregistered and uninsured car.

In one incident, a banned Santa Ana suffered significant injuries when he slammed into a telegraph pole and his engine caught on fire while attempting to deliver some machinery for work.

The court heard he was pulled unconscious from the wreckage as live wires lay on the ground.

Another time, he jumped in the driver’s seat following a “emotionally fuelled argument” with his girlfriend who had threatened to burn all his things.

“He tried to circumvent that from happening,” his lawyer explained, after earlier admitting Santa Ana “snaps” and “makes bad decisions” when stressed.

She asked Magistrate Georgia Knight to consider an alternative punishment to full time custody, saying the boiler maker had never given false particulars, never tried to flee and had never been confrontational with police.

Magistrate Knight said while it was “heartening” to see he had taken steps towards rehabilitation – having completed a traffic offender program – she still had her doubts.

“I’m not completely satisfied he’s turned the corner, given his last offence was only last month,” she said.

“Hopefully he’s genuinely on that path, but time will tell.”

In his latest offence, the defendant was clocked travelling 120km/h in an 100km/h zone on the M4 and subsequently failed a breath test, recording a special category reading of 0.029.

He was convicted, fined $500 for the drink driving offence and had his lengthy disqualification extended, which stood at 2027 prior to sentence.

But in a twist, his custodial sentence was put on hold just hours after it was imposed, with Magistrate Knight granting him bail until his appeal is heard in the District Court on March 6.

If the original conviction stands, he is eligible for release on parole on August 22, 2017.

Truckie cops fine over heavy load in Jordan Springs

A truck driver busted on a load-limited road has been hit with a fine.

Govanni De Salvo faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday after failing to comply with mass requirements.

The 38-year-old’s lawyer submitted his client was unfamiliar with the Jordan Springs area and failed to see the sign indicating a maximum load limit of three tonnes. He was fined $300.

Penrith: Woman busted stealing from variety store

A 33-year-old Glenmore Park woman has been caught shoplifting from a variety store in Penrith.

At about 11.45am on Thursday, February 23, the woman was collecting a number of various items including toys, DVDs and food from the shop on High Street.

The woman then attempted to leave the store without paying when she was stopped by security.

Police were called and issued the woman a criminal infringement notice.

Penrith: Two arrests following brawl outside CBD pub

Two people have been arrested following a brawl outside a pub on High Street last Saturday morning.

At about 1.20am on Saturday, February 25 a brawl began involving a 25-year-old man from Werrington.

When police attended, the male became abusive towards police and began saying extremely offensive words.

He was warned, but when officers went to arrest him, a 33-year-old female tourist from the United Kingdom then stood between the male and police in an attempt to stop the arrest.

She was asked to leave and told to move on by police, but continued to interfere.

The male was eventually arrested and charged with ‘offensive language’ and ‘hinder police’ and issued a future court attendance notice.

The female was also arrested and charged with ‘offensive language,’ ‘hinder police’ and ‘resist officer in execution of duty’.

She will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, March 2.

Penrith: Police intervene in disagreement between men

Police were called to The Crescent, Penrith after a man was being verbally abusive to another man.

It is alleged that a scuffle occurred be-

tween the two men. When police arrived at the scene, one male, a 44-year-old from Winmalee, became very offensive.

He was issued with an infringement notice for offensive behaviour.

South Penrith: Police seek witnesses to pedestrian crash

Police are appealing for information following an incident on Friday, February 24 where a man collided with a car.

A car was driving along Batt Street, South Penrith about 50 metres from the intersection at Parsons Avenue at about 11.55am.

It is alleged that a 78-year-old pedestrian from Orchard Hills stepped out into traffic, where he was struck by the car.

He was conveyed to Westmead Hospital where he currently remains in a critical condition.

The driver remained on scene following the collision.

Police are still investigating the incident and are calling for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Penrith: Country visitor caught stealing from local shop

At about 1.30pm on Thursday, February 23 police attended a store on Station Street, Penrith following reports of a shoplifter. A 43-year-old woman from Taree was arrested and charged with shoplifting.

Penrith: Police find drugs on screaming man in car park

A 39-year-old male from Colyton was walking through Penrith Station car park aggressively screaming at passers-by last week.

Police were called, and when they approached the man he dropped a small resealable plastic bag. Police allege the bag contained illegal drugs.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with ‘Possess prohibited drug’ and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, March 21.

How to make a will Sometimes we like to get back to basics with these columns so this week we have decided to revisit the art of making a valid Will.

There is often confusion about what a Will is and how it can be written and questions around things like who can contest a Will.

Here it is in a nutshell: 1. A Will disposes of any property owned by a deceased person in their sole name at the date of their death.

2. A person must be over the age of 18 years to make a Will, unless that Will is made in contemplation of marriage.

3. A Will must be made in writing and signed by the Will maker or by some other person on behalf of the Will maker at the Will maker’s direction.

4. The Will must be witnessed by two witnesses present at the time that the Will maker signs the Will.

5. The Will maker must sign the Will possessing an understanding of the nature and effect of the document and with the intention of executing a Will.

Here are some other things to remember when thinking about writing your Will:

A.The people who witness your Will should not be an interested party or beneficiary under the Will.

B. You will need to appoint an Executor/Trustee to oversee that your Will is put into effect in accordance with its terms after your death.

C. You will need to have a think about how you wish to distribute your assets including how you wish to distribute them if your first choice beneficiary dies before you.

Wills can be relatively simple documents however, if they are not prepared in accordance with the legal requirements they can be deemed invalid or partially invalid.

This means that your assets may not go to the person that you wish them to.

The only way to be sure that your assets end up in the hands of the right people is to have a suitably qualified solicitor prepare your Will for you.

Mr Ayres welcomed the decision to bring a cattle herd back to the area.

“The return of a cattle herd to Emu Plains continues a long tradition of utilising agriculture as part of the rehabilitation of prisoners and I am pleased to see this continue into the future,” he said.

“This decision sends a clear signal to the community that the previously proposed expansion on the site is no longer being considered.”

The 100 beef cattle will be relocated from Mannus Correctional Centre, in the Riverina region of NSW.

etail, hospitality and fast-food workers are set to lose out following an historic ruling by the Fair Work Commission to cut Sunday and public holiday penalty rates.

Lindsay MP Emma Husar has slammed the Fair Work Commission’s landmark ruling, made on Thursday, February 23, saying “it’s an assault on so many working families”.

The cuts to public holiday rates will start from July but the Commission will take further submissions.

“Like most people in western Sydney I came from a family who relied on penalty rates,” Ms Husar said.

“I relied on them to get me through my uni days – this won’t create a single job.”

But Ms Husar’s claim that the cut won’t create “a single job” is being refuted by a number of industry groups, including the NSW Business Chamber which says more local businesses would likely open longer and with more staff under the changes.

Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce Chamber Advocacy Chairperson, Gordon Henwood, told the Weekender the Chamber will be keeping in touch with its members to monitor their response.

“Any change in market conditions adds uncertainty to any business,” Mr Henwood said.

“The penalty rates decision goes some way towards resolving the imbalance between large and smaller retailers and food outlets, but it is still not a level playing field.

“Some larger operators pay little or no penalty rates under existing EBAs, making it hard for smaller operators to compete but conversely, finding staff to work Sundays has just become more difficult.”

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has slammed the decision, despite handing the Fair Work Commission such powers when he was a Minister.

While an election is more than two years away there is little doubt that Sunday penalty rates will now become a major issue for the Government and a significant platform for Labor, even though the Commission sets rates independently.

Secretary of Unions NSW, Mark Morey, said he was outraged by the decision of the Fair Work Commission.

“This decision represents one of the greatest cuts to the wages of working people in Australian history,” he said.

“Penalty rates are not extra, discretionary income. Hundreds of thousands of retail, hospitality and fast-food workers rely on Sunday penalty rates to pay their rent, child care and electricity bills.”

What do the cuts mean?

• Full-time and part-time hospitality workers will have their Sunday penalty rate cut from 175 per cent to 150 per cent.

• Full-time and part-time retail workers will have their Sunday penalty rate cut from 200 to 150 per cent.

• Full-time and part-time fast-food workers will have their rate cut from 150 per cent to 125 per cent.

• Public holiday rates in retail, hospitality, and fast-food will also be cut.

ith many business owners likely to enforce the penalty rate cuts, other companies are taking a different approach.

Owner of Big Poppa’s Burgers in Penrith, Chris O’Shea, said he won’t be imposing the rate cut.

“I’ve worked in hospitality for 15 years so I know what it is like to need that money,” he told the Weekender.

“At first I was like ‘yes!’ but then I thought of it from the employees’ perspective and just knew I couldn’t do that to them.”

Mr O’Shea said his employees were contacting him saying they would no longer work on a Sunday if the extra penalty rates weren’t in place.

“The way you structure a business doesn’t mean that because Sunday rates are getting cut that I’m going to put extra staff members on or anything,” he said.

“I’d rather give my current staff the money because I know they all have a lot

going on whether it’s with their young families, university or their mortgages.”

Employee at Big Poppa’s Burgers, Kayla Cauchi, said she would have considered leaving the industry if it was going to effect her.

“I have a few friends that it’s going to effect and the impact will be huge on them,” she said.

“I’m about to get married and start a family, so I would have definitely considered going back to child care or getting a second job to make up for that money.”

Program aims to break down barriers and encourage students EMILY NEWTON

boriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Mt Druitt TAFE got a taste of their future careers during a visit to Penrith Police Station on Tuesday.

The Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery Program (IPROWD) encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the journey of becoming a NSW Police Officer.

As a partnership between NSW Police Force, TAFE NSW, Charles Sturt University and the Australian Government, the program offers a flexible approach to help students overcome barriers to becoming a Police Officer.

Participant Joel Casey said the day was exciting as they were shown behind the scenes of the station, including the police cars and how they work.

“We’ve been asked about a hundred times what makes you a good Police Officer,” Mr Casey laughed.

“It’s just helping the community and the variety of exciting jobs.”

Tjnara Leonard-Smith is interested in using her Aboriginal culture to help her in a future career of police prosecuting.

“As an Aboriginal person coming into the Police Force, we’re needed for dealing with the community,” she said.

This will be the third year the university has marched for Mardi Gras with the theme of this year’s float ‘Equality Unlimited’.

Two Penrith students, Rowena Bellingham and Kylie Henman, will be among those marching through the streets of Sydney.

Both identifying as LGBTIQ, the duo say they are proud to represent the community.

“I’m really happy to be participating because I want to show that I am proud to be LGBTIQ and hopefully people will be more accepting of my status after this,” Ms Bellingham said.

“Everyone is super excited to be participating and to have our own float – we can’t wait,” Ms Henman added.

WSU also has an ‘Ally Network’, a staff and student group within the university committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture for LGBTIQ community members.

The 18 week IPROWD course offers a flexible approach to assist each student in the successful completion of the course through tailored case management.

In the spirit of Aboriginal reconciliation the program, which has been run through Mt Druitt TAFE for the past seven years, aims to assist Aboriginal people to gain entry to the NSW Police Academy.

The Live Your Life Diabetes Expo is back in Penrith this Saturday EMILY NEWTON

iabetes NSW and ACT is giving people the tools to better manage their diabetes through their Live Your Life Expo in Penrith this Saturday, March 4.

Trish Egan, Chief Operating Officer for Diabetes NSW and ACT, said Penrith has one of the highest incidence rates of people living with diabetes.

“In the Local Government Area of Penrith there is about 12,500 people who have diabetes, and about 86 per cent of those are type 2,” Ms Egan said.

“We find that people often think that if they don’t feel sick they don’t need to do anything to actually manage it.

“If people don’t take their diabetes seriously, they will develop some pretty serious complications which can include blindness, kidney failure and amputation.”

Diabetes NSW ambassador, Yvonne Appleby, said the day is full of vital support for anyone diagnosed with diabetes.

The expo runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm at Penrith Panthers and costs $15 for Diabetes NSW members and $20 for non-members.

usic is the language of the soul, and students at Rainbow Cottage Children’s Centre are exploring this connection through the Nordoff-Robbins music program.

The Cambridge Gardens pre-school has teamed up with Koolyangarra Aboriginal Family Centre in Cranebrook for weekly visits to participate in the initiative.

Kate Tabain, Registered Music Therapist at Nordoff-Robbins, said the program helps children explore and grow through interacting with music.

“We use music to support social skills, motor skills and help improve wellbeing and quality of life... we help transform individuals,” Ms Tabain said.

“It uses music in a fun and interactive way to help development. This includes social interaction, listening skills and sharing.”

The program is the first time Kingswood’s Nordoff-Robbins has actively worked with Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, and aims at engaging the children in partnership with Koolyangarra.

Having worked with Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services previously, Ms Tabain said they saw a need in the community and wanted to help.

Penalty rate debate

Upgrade comes at a cost

To reduce pay rates on those already employed is hard as they are now at a reduced income through no fault of their own. To be fair, I think the reduced rate could be applied to all new employees.

That industry has a high churn rate so I don’t think it would take long for all employees to be on the same reduced rate. I still think the monetary gain by business owners will go directly into profits which is the cynical side of me.

If businesses aren’t doing so well, then perhaps they need to look at their business plan. Not all are run as well as they could be.

Show is still truckin’ along after 30 years EMILY NEWTON

ig rigs and great family fun will be the order of the day when the Annual Working Truck Show is held in Penrith later this month.

It’s the show’s 30th birthday this year and huge crowds are expected at the Museum of Fire on March 19.

Anticipated by local families annually, the show is attended by enthusiasts from across the country and loved by all who take the time to check it out.

The truck show has an important cause behind it, with funds used for the education of families in fire safety and the preservation of fire history at the Museum of Fire.

“At the end of the day, what’s really hard with the museum is the collection management and behind the scenes. That is so expensive and can be crippling for voluntary organisations,” said Museum of Fire CEO, Mark White.

“Without the truck show, the museum would struggle to exist. It’s not just going to another project, it’s the lifeblood of the museum.”

Many people have been attending the show for three decades, and are now bringing their own children along.

Trucking companies and other vendors taking part in the day have also grown with the show over the years.

“Kids have grown up with this show. A lot of the children of families that were running companies 20 years ago are now running the company today,” Mr White said.

Recognised as one of Penrith’s major events, 20,000 people flock to the Working Truck Show each year.

“The rides and entertainment are first class, and we build the show around what’s coming, and that’s what makes it so special,” Mr White said.

Tickets for adults are $35 and with each adult ticket purchased, three children can enter for free up to 16-years-old.

For this cost, all 22 rides, entertainment and exhibits inside the show are free.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Penrith Working Truck Show’s Facebook page is taking a trip down memory lane with sentimental photos and stories posted in the lead-up to the event.

“Penrith was very much a truck city, it was built on the back of the transport industry and the old families in Penrith were all involved in the quarries,” Mr White said.

Boost for talented young locals thanks to music scholarships

Chance for senior citizens to jump into the digital world EMILY NEWTON

s the NSW Seniors Festival launches across Sydney this week, Leep is helping older citizens tackle the digital world.

Through digital workshops known as the Leep in Lab program, senior citizens are invited to take part in one-on-one digital mentoring and specialised classes in online security.

Lisa Armstrong-Cook, Digital Mentor for Leep in Lab, said they’re paying special attention to areas where getting online is most important for senior citizens.

“It’s a highlight to come along and see somebody learn something new and open up a whole new world to them,” she said.

CEO Cecily Michaels encourages everyone to get involved as services such as Centrelink and Medicare are rapidly moving online.

By improving the digital literacy of the elderly, Leep aims to improve not only their quality of life, but also ease the burden on busy Human Services centres.

“You really need to come and try, getting online has never been so easy,” Ms Michaels said.

even lucky talented up and coming musicians have just received the 2017 Penrith Conservatorium of Music Scholarships.

Awarded for their talents in voice, guitar and piano, the scholarships will help each student pursue their dreams in music.

The recipients range in age from 12 to 18 and were chosen by a panel from the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Producer of the music program at The Joan, Valda Silvy, said it was a hard choice picking seven students from 27 applicants.

“It was really hard because they’re all so young and at the beginning of their prime, sometimes there were only a couple of points difference between them,” she said.

This year’s recipients include Rebeka Liepa, Meg Whittaker and Tom Masters for voice; Alexander Frendo for guitar; and Victor Zhou, Dominic Hart and Diana Babajanyan for piano.

The Conservatorium Scholarships provide the aspiring musicians with the opportunity to work with highly qualified teachers, receive subsidised tuition, experience musicianship and ensemble activity.

Seniors will enter the digital world through Leep’s digital mentoring program cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

The Leep in Lab is open for digital mentoring on Wednesdays 10am to 12pm, and topic-based classes are running each Friday at the Leep in Lab Training Centre at 688 High Street, Penrith.

Pop-up Labs armed with Digital Mentors will be held especially for the Seniors Festival at Panthers from 11am to 3pm on March 8, 9 and 10.

Last week I attended the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Summit where I had the opportunity to speak with government and business on the benefits an airport will bring the people of western Sydney.

We acknowledge the potential benefits of an airport but many in our community are sceptical, particularly given the jobs numbers within the airport itself will not address the huge shortfall in local jobs in western Sydney.

There are two opportunities that will fundamentally transform western Sydney.

One is committing, as a matter of priority, to a north-south rail corridor to be open by the time operations at the airport begin. Significant growth has already occurred and reserving the corridor for North-South rail now, while it’s greenfield and held by a small number of landowners makes sense, in terms of cost and as a driver of development and employment.

The other opportunity is having Lo-

cal Government at the decision making table for the Federal Government’s City Deal which is integral to the future productivity of the Third City, that we call the New West.

Council is leading the way with Penrith’s standing as a Regional City and game-changing catalyst developments including the Western Sydney Priority Growth Area, Penrith Health and Education Precinct and the Sydney Science Park.

The 2500 hectare Sydney Science Park will provide 12,000 jobs in innovation, education and research.

Add to that new housing and innovative schooling from K to 12 in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and it’s easy to see why the airport has the ability to deliver widespread and far reaching benefits to those in western Sydney.

ave you ever come across a brilliantly simple idea and thought “why didn’t I think of that?�?

Conversely, have you had a fantastic idea, only to find that someone else has beat you to the punch and created a successful business around it? Or have you had a great idea in your head for ages but haven’t made any progress on it?

In all these scenarios, the reality is that there is far more to success than the good idea. If you have an idea brewing, it is great to dream about its virtues and possibilities. But at some point, you need to think about a range of practicalities. You need to have the capacity to produce the product or deliver the service. You need to know how to market the idea. You need to have a good grasp on financial aspects like cash flow.

You need to consider the following: Ensure there is a customer base You need to prove to yourself, and demonstrate to investors, that your idea can be monetised.

There is no point speculating about

who might buy your product, or projecting sales for a service that hasn’t been tested.

Research your competition There is nothing wrong with having an idea that is an adaptation or an improvement on an existing product. But if you start launching into a new business venture, only to find that your ‘unique idea’ has already been done, you will waste time and money.

Create a viable business model If you think people are simply going to start lining up of their own accord to hand over their money to you, there is going to be disappointment!

You need to determine how you will deliver your product or service, the costs involved and how you will make a profit. A business model will give you direction.

Be in it for the long haul There are very few ideas that find success ‘overnight’.

If you want your idea to move from dream to reality, you need to be prepared to work extremely hard and keep believing in your idea.

Both Facebook and Instagram offer a very similar live broadcasting tool with similar functionality.

Viewers can tune into your live feed and comment, and send reactions on Facebook and hearts on Instagram. It’s the best way to interact with viewers in real time and answer their questions whilst creating a personal connection with them.

Try adding live broadcasting into your social media strategy and schedule a date and time to go live.

Build anticipation by letting your audience know you’ll be going live a day in advance and try to broadcast for at least 10 minutes. Facebook allows a maximum of 90 minutes and Instagram 60, so make the most of your time as it’s another free tool to promote your business and get across social media.

Try different types of broadcast topics such as a Q&A, breaking news, behind

the scenes or conduct an interview, performance or demonstration.

To go live on Facebook, click ‘What’s on your mind’ at the top of your news feed and select ‘Live Video’ from the dropdown menu. Add a catchy description, choose your audience and hit ‘Go Live’.

Whilst you are live you’ll see comments and interactions start rolling in on your screen. Once you are finished broadcasting, your video will save to your timeline for others to view if they weren’t active whilst you were live.

on the injury front for big Sam McKendry, there’s no doubt that off the field his life is coming together nicely. He and his wife Kirsten already have a little girl, Isla, and are now expecting their second child. The new addition to the McKendry clan will be a boy. As for the injury, the former New Zealand Test star is hoping to be back on the field before the mid-way point of the season after revelations that his ACL tear was not as bad as first feared.

thers to present players who have joined the top grade squad for the first time with their own locker name plate. This week, coach Anthony Griffin presented a name plate to rising star Dylan Edwards, who made his first grade debut last season and is now part of the full-time squad.

the NRL continued last week, with the Panthers boss suggesting the code’s governing body is too influenced by the media and those using Facebook and Twitter. Responding to rumours about a potential ‘captain’s challenge’ being introduced to the NRL, Gould Tweeted: “They make it up. NRL totally influenced by media/social media. If enough people on social media said ‘use a round ball’, they would do it”.

While Fox comes across as being innovative and passionate about the game, much of Nine’s coverage appears the same including the very dated, very unfunny ‘Footy Show’. Nine will always win the ratings given it broadcasts to more people but it’ll be interesting to see if the launch of a 24 hour channel decreases the gap somewhat.

common question since the branding was revealed across Penrith’s new jerseys for the 2017 season. I’m told whatever the product is, it’ll have a mid-year launch.

» A big blow to the Men of League foun-

dation with State Manager Stuart Raper calling it quits. Raper, the former coach of Cronulla, is taking up a new position with the NSWRL. Men of League started a Penrith committee two years ago, with a number of local events planned in 2017.

» Scott McRae would have to be the long-

est serving ground announcer in the NRL. When he returns to Pepper Stadium later this month for the opening game of the season against the Roosters, it will mark his 20th year on the microphone. McRae has survived the axe a couple of times, and even got through the ‘defence, one set’ era unscathed.

» You may have noticed the hair of

injured Panthers winger Dallin WateneZelezniak looking a bit long and scruffy of late. I’m told the Kiwi international will book in for a fresh hair cut on the eve of his expected return against the Roosters in Round 3.

appears to be on the way. Fox League commentator Andrew Voss this week recorded much of the commentary for the game, which is expected to be released on both PlayStation4 and XBoxOne. Look out for it later in the year.

F

or the first time in 51 seasons, the Penrith Panthers enter round one as premiership favourites.

It is an enormous burden to carry, and as anyone who has followed rugby league long enough knows, being given the favouritism tag in February generally means very little come September.

With the Dragons tipped by many to miss the top eight this year, it is no surprise that the Panthers are considered close to sure things in this Saturday’s encounter at Kogarah Oval.

But rugby league is very rarely won on paper and a number of factors will

ensure this game is closer than the betting markets may suggest.

The first is the weather. Kogarah has copped a drenching this week and there’s a 90 per cent chance of rain on game day – far different conditions to those the Panthers faced in their pre-season trials.

Holding onto the footy will be at a premium and neither side is likely to want to throw the ball around, so you can expect a dour game with the effort of the forwards to come into focus.

And despite what the pre-season predictions may suggest, the Dragons don’t have a bad forward pack. Paul Vaughan, Russell Packer, Tyson Frizell and Joel Thompson are no slouches, and when you throw Jack de Belin and new recruit Tariq Sims into the mix, you can see that Paul McGregor’s problems don’t exist up front.

Of course there are significant question marks over St George-Illawarra’s attack

but the rain will ensure things are levelled out a little there on Saturday.

The other factor that plays a part in this encounter is the venue.

Round one always provides an upset or two and it’s often because a home team, sometimes under-rated, puts in an enormous effort to kick off the season in front of their own fans.

The game may still be worth two points no matter what the round but there’s something about the first home game of the season that gives a side an added push.

Penrith fans should also not fall victim to expecting too much too early from their highly fancied squad.

Te Maire Martin and Nathan Cleary may be the most exciting young halves partnership in the competition but they’ve actually played very little footy together and will take time to gel.

take a little time to work itself out with James Tamou now leading the way and Trent Merrin a year older and wiser, and seemingly very keen to take on a leadership role this season.

Ever since the draw come out late last year I’ve looked at these two opening games of the season on the road as 50/50 propositions.

Nothing should surprise anyone in round one – teams are still working on combinations and implementing what they’ve worked on at training in a real game environment.

Expect Peter Wallace to calm things down especially in the wet conditions.

I’m tipping Penrith this weekend but whatever the result, let’s remember – premierships aren’t won in March. Win or lose, take the positives and do better next week – it’s as a simple as that.

njured Penrith Panthers winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has revealed he’s on the verge of signing a new, multi-year deal with the club.

Currently sidelined until Round 3 following recent knee surgery, the 21-year-old Kiwi international said he wouldn’t want to play anywhere else.

“I love Penrith, I’ve been here since I was 12-years-old playing in development squads,” he told Extra Time.

“The club’s done nothing wrong by me and have always looked after my family and I. “I’m not sure when the deal will be announced as my manager is looking after it but I’m hoping sooner rather than later.”

Watene-Zelezniak will miss this weekend’s opening round clash against St George-Illawarra after a reoccurrence

of an old knee injury during recent preseason training.

The flyer is hopeful of being back in time for Penrith’s first home game against the Roosters on March 18.

“I had a little tear in my meniscus and I had to have a little clean out,” he said.

“I could’ve played this season with it but if I injured it again during a game, I could’ve been out for the whole season.

“We had some time up our sleeve, so I decided to get it fixed up now.”

Watene-Zelezniak said he’ll try to take some positives out of his delayed start to the year.

“Everything happens for a reason and it allows my body to freshen up for a long season ahead,” he said.

“I played the whole season last year and it was very long. To be able to have this time to freshen up and get ready for the year will be awesome.”

Towards the end of 2016 WateneZelezniak had the opportunity to tour

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is on the verge of re-signing with the Panthers the UK with New Zealand’s Four Nations squad.

While he only managed to get on the field for one game during the series, the talented Kiwi relished his time away overseas.

“It was an awesome experience. To be able to see places I’ve never been to before or seen in movies was really cool,” he said.

“It’s good to say I’ve been to those places now and it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

fter a career riddled with injury, new Panthers recruit Tim Browne has a renewed lease on life at the foot of the Mountains.

Despite debuting at Canterbury way back in 2010, the 29-year-old prop has only played 84 first grade games following a raft of injuries early in his career.

With his time at the Bulldogs coming to a close courtesy of the Panthers during last year’s semi finals, Browne said the time was right for a change further west.

“I was with the Dogs for seven seasons and I was looking for a change, I didn’t want to get complacent with my footy,” he told Extra Time.

“I feel like I’m still relatively young in the sport because I was injured a lot in my early 20’s. I was looking for another opportunity and Gus and Anthony [Griffin] approached me and said there might be something for you here if you are willing to come and work your butt off.”

Browne signed a three-year deal with the Panthers, much to the surprise of the local fan base who thought the hardworking forward didn’t fit Penrith’s ‘sexy’ young line-up.

However, Browne is expected to be more than a workhorse for the club and is considered a leader among his peers.

“I just want to get on the field and rip in for this team and really earn my spot.

Hopefully I can take a few of the boys with me and inspire them if I can,” Browne said.

“There’s nothing pretty about my game, it’s all about hard work.”

Browne said he’s feeling refreshed in his new surrounds.

“The enthusiastic young blokes make you feel real fresh,” he said.

“I have a deep love for footy at the moment – I’m driven, passionate and it’s worked out great that I get to play here.”

Browne will be hoping his strong work ethic will earn him a bench spot in his debut game for the Panthers this Saturday against the Dragons.

With Penrith going into the season as premiership favourites, the same can’t be said for St George-Illawarra who are tipped to endure another tough year.

Panthers must realise teams will be watching their every move

e’re on the cusp of another NRL season and my first since retiring from the game at the end of last year.

For my debut column in Extra Time, I thought I’d take you through my top eight predictions, how the Panthers will fair in 2017, as well as who I’m tipping this weekend between my two former clubs in the Dragons and Penrith.

In no particular order, my top eight for 2017 should look like this at the end of 26 rounds: Penrith, Melbourne, North Queensland, Roosters, Canberra, New Zealand, Brisbane and South Sydney.

I’ve left a few teams out like the Bulldogs and Parramatta but you can only pick eight teams and it is a hard choice with so many on the improve.

I noticed in recent weeks everyone tipping the Panthers to take out this year’s title.

I think the expectation can be welcomed by the Panthers and they should feel proud they are on everyone’s radar.

However, you don’t want to get too comfortable with it all and knowing Hook

(Anthony Griffin), he won’t allow that. For the Panthers they should aim to win three from their first four games, and they have to realise teams will be watching them.

I personally think they’ll go great – they have good depth and the key to me is Tyrone Peachey. Where do you play him?

Where’s his best fit?

If Penrith can get the balance right between playing ‘entertaining footy’ and ‘grind it out footy’, then they’ll be hard to stop.

I’m looking forward to seeing Nathan Cleary and Te Marie Martin team up in the halves for the first time this weekend.

What that young halves pairing have in their favour is veteran Peter Wallace at hooker.

Wal’s a great leader on the field and will control the ruck much like Mick Ennis did at the Sharks.

For Te Maire, he’s only played a couple of first grade games and, when I played with him, we told him to run and support and that’s what he’s good at.

I think Nathan will do the bulk of the kicking and directing of play, and we’ll see Moyza chime in when he needs to.

This Saturday afternoon my two former

clubs in the Panthers and Dragons will do battle at Kogarah.

It’s a tough environment to play at because you go there thinking one thing and then all of a sudden it’s tight with a couple of minutes to go.

Some will have greater expectations than others, and right at the top of the pile should be Panthers supporters.

Heading into 2017 they know they have a team that has the attacking ability to blow other outfits off the park.

There’s a ridiculous amount of skill in so many of their best 17 players, and if they can bring a defensive resolve to their work this season there’s no reason why it couldn’t be party time in Penrith come early October.

The team that ended the Panthers’ challenge last season, Canberra, will have similar thoughts as the competition gets underway.

No team scored more points than the Raiders in 2016, and after going so close to qualifying for the Grand Final, nobody who has a fondness for lime green clothing is expecting anything other than a red-hot tilt at this year’s title.

You’d expect Melbourne and Brisbane to

do what they seemingly always do – put themselves in a position to win another premiership – and anything less than a top eight finish for either of them would be a major surprise.

While ever Johnathan Thurston (pictured) is lacing up his boots for the Cowboys it’s hard to imagine the North Queenslanders missing out on a finals berth, and if the Roosters manage to make headlines for the right reasons this season, then they also have more than enough ability at their disposal to be a huge factor in the race for the trophy.

If we put all six of those clubs down for a finals appearance it leaves just two spots to be filled from the other 10 teams. It’s at this point where the crystal ball gets somewhat cloudy.

The Sharks were tremendous in taking the title last year, but having lost key players in Michael Ennis and Ben Barba, their chances of repeating as premiers have taken a hit.

Can the Warriors produce their best football on a more regular basis with Kieran Foran and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in the line-up?

Will the Bulldogs prove the critics wrong

and show they have the attacking ability to match the top teams? Whichever way it all works out – and after a long hot summer – it’s great to have rugby league back!

T

hese days we see Sam Burgess and James Graham as the biggest English imports in the game, but back in the 1970s Penrith secured a major coup by bringing Bill Ashurst to Australia.

Ashurst had played with Wigan from 1968 until 1973, and joined the Panthers for the 1974 season.

Ashurst was one of the finest players in England, and came to the Panthers with fellow English international Mike Stephenson. It was big news for the Panthers, and for rugby league in Australia, that two players of such profile would head to the western suburbs of Sydney in the prime of their careers.

Ashurst’s transfer fee was a record for the time – a whopping $27,700.

A second-rower with class and skill, Ashurst was an immediate hit with Panthers fans.

Even though he would only play three seasons with Penrith – leaving suddenly before the 1977 season kicked off – Ashurst left his mark, and in 2006 was named in the club’s Team of Legends.

Former Panthers Chairman, Don Feltis, notes just what a special achievement that was given his short time with the club.

“For someone to have played just the 46 games with our club and to make the Team of Legends just goes to show what an outstanding player he was,” Feltis told Extra Time.

“Back when he played with the Panthers a second row forward chip kicking over the opposition, running around regaining possession and scoring was a very rare achievement. Bill Ashurst did that a

number of times. He could turn a game in a matter of minutes. He was one of the most gifted players I had the pleasure of seeing play.”

In the Panthers Men In Black book, Ashurst speaks of his time at the Panthers.

“I have wonderful memories of Penrith... the beautiful home we lived in, the super view of the Blue Mountains and the great friends we made during our four years there,” he said.

So, why did Ashurst leave at the start of 1977?

That’s still one of the biggest unanswered questions in Penrith’s history.

“With regard to why and the way I left the club, I would like to keep them personal but I would like to come back to the club one day – finances permitting – to apologise for the way it was done,” Ashurst said in Men in Black.

“I went through a very emotional time in my marriage. My wife had come home

Pryce is right for a kids favourite

imon Pryce’s role as the Red Wiggle may only be a few years old, but his involvement with the group has been over a decade long.

Meeting the original members through friends while at drama school, Simon was approached in 2002 to do backing vocals on The Wiggles’ albums, before being asked to take on the role of King John in The Wiggles-created kids show ‘The Kingdom of Paramithi’, which aired in 2008.

The role led to work as an understudy for the original Red Wiggle, Murray Cook, before Simon became a full-time member of the group in 2013.

During those early days Simon admits that he wasn’t fully aware of just how much work went into The Wiggles’ success.

“I knew how well-known and popular they were as a group, but I didn’t really understand the extent of what they did, which was touring basically all over Australia and the world,” Simon explained of his pre-Red Wiggle years.

You’d be hard pressed finding a children’s entertainment group that’s as loved as The Wiggles, not just here but across the globe, and changing up that winning formula was always going to be risky.

“The Wiggles had been part of the Australian psyche for 20 years at that stage,” Simon said.

“So we were a bit unsure if people would accept new faces, new voices, new people in those roles.”

To prepare for the changeover, the new recruits spent a year doing ‘Wiggles in Training’, where they performed shows alongside the original members, giving kids and their parents the chance to get used to the upcoming line-up change.

The decision to have a year-long transition was an important one, especially for a particular group of audience members.

“One of the main reasons [for Wiggles in Training] is that there’s a lot of children with special needs who are now in their 20s who still love The Wiggles, so it was about trying to reach out to them as well because sometimes change is hard for them,” Simon said.

“We tried to take time for that message to be able to get across to them that there was going to be a change, so hopefully the adjustment wouldn’t be so shocking or so hard for them.

“But I think overall it was more about the parents accepting us than the children,” he laughed.

Four years later and it seems the work put into the transition was worth it, with the second generation of The Wiggles being as popular as ever with kids and adults alike.

The group, which still includes original member and Blue Wiggle Anthony Field, spend their time recording new material, filming new shows and somehow fitting in an extensive touring schedule which includes multiple sold out shows at each venue.

As part of their current tour, The Wiggles will be heading to the Evan Theatre at Panthers this month for four shows, with several already sold out.

For Simon, putting on that red skivvy has been highly rewarding, both professionally and personally.

Earlier this year, the singer/actor married his long-time partner, personal

trainer Lauren Hannaford, who he met when she was approached to work on a Wiggles tour.

“We had a beautiful wedding and we managed to get a week away in between some filming, so we got a little bit of time away together,” Simon said.

“Married life is great, I love it. I like having my ring on my finger, it’s a really nice feeling.”

The Wiggles will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Sunday, March 19 at 10am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm and 5pm. Tickets are $30 for children and adults, with children under 12 months free on lap.

P

enrith City Children’s Choir (PCCC) are currently on the lookout for kids who are keen to try their hand at singing.

PCCC is looking for boys and girls aged seven to 13 of all singing abilities for their first project of 2017, which will be held on Sunday, March 12 and Sunday, March 19 from 3pm to 5pm.

Across the two workshops, choir members will learn to perform the toe-tapping ‘Shake the Papaya Down’, the hypnotic ‘Rhythm of the Rain’ and Danish composer John Hoybye’s ‘Himmelflugt’.

During the project participants will develop part-singing skills across a range of different musical styles.

This is the perfect introduction to singing, with friends and family invited to enjoy an informal performance at the end of the second afternoon workshop.

The Penrith City Children’s Choir hold several projects throughout the year, so if you miss out this time around there will be plenty more chances to get involved.

Ê It might seem unbelievable but it’s true, American soap ‘Days of our Lives’ has been renewed for a 52nd season.

Recently it was speculated that the long running NBC drama may finally come to an end, however that was refuted last week with TV bosses giving the show yet another year of life. In January, ‘Days’ aired its 13,000th episode. Ê

Netflix will screen stand-up event ‘Amy Schumer: The Leather Special’ on Tuesday, March 7. In the show, Schumer targets binge drinking as well as her relationship with her boyfriend.

Ê New Channel Nine action series ‘Lethal Weapon’ has been renewed for a full 22 episodes. While the show hasn’t reached great heights here, it is performing very well in the US. Ê Country music-inspired drama ‘Nashville’ delivered probably its biggest ever

twist in the US last week, but Australian fans still have five or six weeks before they’ll see the episode here, because of Foxtel and Showcase’s insistence on delaying the new season. Unfortunately, the twist was so big that anyone following the show or its cast on social media would have had the surprise spoiled already.

With former reality show winners like Guy Sebastian and Dami Im getting a run in previous years, will 2017’s competition be any different? Let the guessing games begin!

Ê Get ready ‘Survivor’ fans, the brand new series ‘Survivor: Game Changers: Mamanuca Islands’ will premiere at 7.30pm next Thursday, March 9 on GO! The new series, filmed in Fiji, features returning players including Ozzy, Cirie, Tai, Sierra and Brad. It will air express from the US.

Ê Todd Sampson’s new series ‘Life on the Line’ begins on ABC next month, testing the laws of Physics first-hand.

With the help of some of Australia’s leading young physicists, along with a first-class construction and safety team, each episode follows Todd’s journey from the kernel of an idea through to a daring experiment that will show physics in action on an incredible scale. It premieres on Tuesday, March 21 at 8pm.

Ê Australia’s next ‘Eurovision’ act will be announced by SBS this Tuesday, March 7. For the first time ever, Australia’s artist and song will both be revealed at the same time, in an intimate live performance at a secret location in Melbourne.

Ê Fans of drama ‘Suits’ might be interested to know that a spinoff series is in the works. The new offering will centre on Gina Torres’ character Jessica Pearson, who exited the show midway through season six.

The film did very well at the box office but received mixed reviews.

Rated MA // KATE REID The much anticipated new release in the X-Men franchise, and the last of the Wolverine solo films, hits the big screen this week.

Based on the Marvel comics’ Old Man Logan storyline, the film is set in 2029 and follows a past-his-prime Logan (Hugh Jackman) who is caring for a sick Professor X (Patrick Stewart) in a remote area near the Mexican border.

Though Logan is attempting to hide from the world, his secrecy gets interrupted when he’s introduced to a young mutant called Laura (Dafne Keen), who he must protect from the dark forces that are out to get her.

Fans will be happy to hear that the

reviews for ‘Logan’ have been overwhelmingly positive, with movie review site Rotten Tomatoes describing the film as ‘a violent but surprisingly thoughtful superhero action film that defies genre conventions’.

The film is rumoured to be Jackman’s last as Wolverine, a role he has played across nine films and 17 years.

But in Hollywood anything can happen, so don’t be surprised if we see him again.

Conversely, cash and fixed interest are far safer, but of course have a much lower potential return.

When building an investment portfolio, we have a combination of all of these asset classes in a proportion that suits the individual’s appetite for risk.

The less risk the investor is prepared to take, the higher exposure to defensive assets of cash and fixed interest in the portfolio.

One of the key factors in deciding the level of risk we are prepared to accept is the length of time we are prepared to invest the money. The longer the investment timeframe, the greater volatility we will be willing to consider.

The reason for this is statistical. The longer the investment is in place, the closer the long-term performance is likely

to be to the expected outcome. The wider the range of possibilities, the greater the sample size required to return a predictable result. Financial planning is all about creating predictable outcomes.

Financial planners have a minimum investment horizon required for each level of investment risk. An investment timeframe of less than three years is most likely to contain no growth assets.

A minimum of three years is required to invest 30 per cent in growth assets, six years to invest 70 per cent in growth and 10 years to have all assets invested in growth.

These are the maximum levels of risk.

An investor may have a long investment horizon but have a conservative outlook or will be in a position to achieve their

goals without increasing investment risk.

With a long term investment like superannuation it is worthwhile investigating an aggressive investment strategy.

Although you will definitely experience some negative years, you will also experience years well above average. In the event that you have a bad year or two, you will have plenty of time to recover, and the increased exposure to growth assets will, in the long term, provide you with a higher average return than a more conservative option.

In the event that you do take a more aggressive approach to your investment, you need to be prepared for the negative years. These years will come, and you should accept this as part of the investment and stick to your long-term strategy.

The wrong pelvic floor exercise or an incorrect technique can often make the problem worse. Certain exercises where your body muscle strength is greater than your pelvic floor strength can also put you at risk of either creating a problem or exacerbating an existing problem.

There are some simple tips for modifying your exercise to protect your pelvic floor: • Avoid high impact, bouncy exercise • Reduce the loads or weight you are lifting • Don’t hold your breath, keep breathing through an exercise • Avoid/modify any exercises where there is direct downward pressure on the pelvic floor • Stop any exercise that creates leakage or feelings of prolapse or pain

Things you should know before buying a guinea pig

They’re cute and make great pets, but guinea pigs need plenty of care...

Guinea pigs make great pets as they are small, clean, quiet and relatively easy to care for. Although they are quiet they can be very vocal and have a range of calls. There are many types of breeds, colours and coat lengths. Particularly when started at a young age they can become used to handling. They are social animals and it is better to keep them with other guinea pigs, they should not be kept alone. Keeping rabbits with guinea pigs is not recommended as they can contract diseases from rabbits.

Guinea pigs should be housed in enclosures, as large as possible. Enclosures need to be predator proof, well ventilated, cleaned regularly and have hiding places within them. Avoid wood enclosures as guinea pigs will often chew them and wood can be hard to keep clean. Hay, straw or shredded paper can be used as bedding.

Guinea pigs are herbivorous, they should be provided with a wide variety of vegetables and leafy greens. It is best to offer the variety from a young age as they can become very fussy and only accept a small number of foods. Slowly introduce new foods at a rate of one new food every three to four days. Their teeth grow

continuously so they need a constant supply of grass or grass hay.

Variety in food colour, smell, taste and texture not only provides nutrients but also environmental enrichment. Pellets are available but should be of high quality and only be given in small amounts, offering them in plastic containers with holes is much more stimulating than a bowl. Guinea pigs are also coprophagic, this means they eat their own faeces. This recycles their gut bacteria and keeps their gastro intestinal system in good health.

Guinea pigs can breed rapidly from an early age, only two to three-months-old.

Females can be nursing one litter while being pregnant with the next.

In regards to breeding, there are several differences in guinea pigs compared to other animals.

Their babies are born well developed with hair, teeth and their eyes are already open. They can start to eat solids soon after birth but it is best if they suckle from their mothers for at least three weeks. If breeding from guinea pigs it is important to allow the female to breed from a young age, if her first pregnancy is delayed she is at high risk of complications. To prevent unwanted litters separating males and females or desexing the male guinea pigs is recommended.

Guinea pigs can get scurvy as they do not make their own Vitamin C. This can be avoided by feeding leafy greens.

They can develop dental disease from poor diet. This can be hard to treat once it develops. Bacterial enteritis can cause serious illness and is caused by contamination of bedding and food. Bumble foot is caused by being on hard flooring and unclean bedding, it can require ongoing treatment.

Guinea pigs are susceptible to bacterial and viral respiratory disease and can develop pneumonia. They can contract lice and mites but these can be treated with medications from your vet.

It is important to monitor how much they eat, their toileting behaviour, their weight and to regularly check their eyes, coat, feet, mouth and ears.

Coats need grooming and nails may need to be trimmed.

Guinea pigs do not require vaccinations but health checks are still important to detect any issues.

There’s no such thing as unhealthy foods In the pursuit of the perfect diet, we have forgotten that food should be enjoyed in moderation no matter how good or bad it’s deemed to be...

Without fail when people find out I’m a nutritionist they always ask the same question: “is [insert food] healthy?”

My answer often gets met with a confused look.

“There’s really no such thing as ‘unhealthy’ food.”

Now I know what you’re thinking. But what about donuts and chips and pizza and all those other high fat, high sugar and high sodium foods. Surely they’re not healthy?

Well yes, they can most definitely be part of a healthy diet.

You see when it comes to nutrition we spend way too much time focused on individual foods and forget to look at the bigger picture.

For example, if you live on nutrient void foods then yes, there’s a greater chance that your health will suffer. But on the flip side of the coin you can most certainly eat donuts and still be healthy.

You see the real issue is our limited definition of health. We see foods as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or worthy of ‘guilt’ (think

‘guilt free’ recipes). We see slim bodies as healthy and larger bodies as unhealthy.

But as with most aspects of life things aren’t that simple.

You can’t look at a person and know how much physical activity they engage in, what foods they eat or the state of their mental health.

You can’t say lollies are ‘unhealthy’ when they can be a life saver to a diabetic with low blood sugar levels.

The truth is unless you have a medical condition that requires a restricted diet there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the foods you like in moderation.

While that chocolate bar may not offer

many essential vitamins and minerals, if it brings you enjoyment how can it not be good for you?

As a society we’ve become so focused on the perfect diet that we are now seeing a rise in orthorexia, an eating disorder that is characterised by obsessive behaviour in pursuit of a healthy diet.

Again, there’s obviously nothing wrong with wanting to consume nutrient-rich foods, but if it’s getting to the point where your mental and physical health is suffering is it really still ‘healthy’?

Such a short memory certainly makes it challenging to remember anything of significance!

Yet, in life we know there is so much to remember! Apart from where we left our car keys, there is people’s names, important dates, PIN numbers, where we parked the car at the shopping centre!

There is so much to remember!

Yet, we do know the importance of remembering.

Remembering is also an important word and idea in the Bible, in particular, remembering God’s great acts of goodness and kindness.

In the Old Testament book of Psalms, in Psalm 77, the writer says “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember the wonders you did in the past. I will think about all that you have done; I will consider all your mighty deeds”.

You would be amazed at how often the Bible speaks about the importance of remembering, and in particular remem-

bering and celebrating the goodness and kindness of God. Perhaps the reality is that we are all a little bit too much like the goldfish! It is easy in all the rush and busyness of life, to forget and not remember, nor even consider the mighty deeds of the Lord.

This is why the Bible repeatedly urges us to remember.

Ever since the club’s dramatic and controversial Sydney Derby win last month – where 14 fans were banned and the club fined by the FFA for bringing the game into disrepute – the Wanderers have lacked spark and failed to fire on the field.

Western Sydney’s losing streak began last week when they were embarrassed in front of their home fans during the opening round of the AFC Champions League.

The Wanderers were no match for Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds, thrashed 4-0.

On Saturday a trip west to Perth saw them held scoreless at the hands of the Glory 2-0 while on Tuesday evening the Wanderers were given another beating by an Asian club, hammered by Shanghai SIPG 5-1.

Western Sydney’s awful record of late will no doubt be putting plenty of pressure on coach Tony Popovic, who is already under the pump to retain his job.

The Wanderers were undefeated in their last five away fixtures in the AFC Champions League before this week’s scorching by the Chinese heavyweights.

“We understand that it will be a difficult challenge but I think we’ve shown in the past, although our resources are not like the Asian teams, we’ve shown that we have been good enough,” Popovic said before Tuesday’s match.

Unless the club can turn around their bad luck soon, not only will they be eliminated from the AFC Champions League – a competition they won back in 2014 – but they’ll also miss out on a place in the A-League finals.

The Wanderers currently sit inside the top six in sixth spot but any further defeats over the next month could see them slip out of contention fast.

This Saturday evening the Wanderers return to Spotless Stadium to battle last season’s A-League champions Adelaide United.

Kick-off is at 7.50pm.

Emus look to enter a golden era Battling Shute Shield club launches memberships in a bid to increase community engagement NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Emus have one of the worst records in Australian sport, but that hasn’t stopped the battling rugby union club from launching season memberships to usher in a new era and attract more fans.

Despite the club’s Shute Shield side currently on a horrendous 37 game streak without a win, Emus officials are hoping the five new and affordable membership options will not only encourage supporters to attend more home games but fly the Emus flag in the community.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith Emus Director Ellen Smallacombe said the new range of memberships are largely designed to get the Emus brand back into the community.

“Our thought process is if we can sell a few memberships with shirts, scarves and caps people will start wearing them in the community and spark a conversation,” she said.

“I walk around town often wearing my Emus shirt and it’s quite amazing how many people stop and chat to me about their time with the Emus. We just want to build some community spirit.”

Smallacombe said memberships have been selling well since they were released online last week.

“I’m really surprised at how many we’ve sold actually, there’s a good buzz around the club at the moment,” she said.

“This year isn’t about making a really big profit, it’s more about community engagement.

“We’ve kept prices as low as we can to get fans to come out to more games.”

hey may all still be in primary school but the U11 boys from Nepean OzTag are already forming a dynasty.

Last month the talented squad of 16 won the 2017 NSW Junior State Cup in Coffs Harbour, going through the entire tournament undefeated.

However, the unbelievable performance by this special group of local youngsters wasn’t just a one-off – they’ve now done it for three straight years.

In 2015, Nepean went undefeated on their way to the U9’s title while last year they did the same, going without a loss to win the U10’s title.

Team manager John Attard, whose son plays in the team, said watching the boys play over the years has been quite special.

“This age group is very special, there’s a lot of talented kids who gel very well,” he told the Weekender.

“They listen to the coaches and are probably playing a couple of years above their age.”

The Nepean U11’s won nine straight games on their way to State Cup glory this year, including a 7-3 victory over St George in the final.

“This year was the closest year competition-wise, every other year they have smashed teams to victory,” Attard said.

“The reason why they are so good is because they’ve created this bond together, which is pretty special.”

But Nepean didn’t have everything go their way during the tournament, with the side suffering a serious scare during their semi final clash against South Sydney.

“The boys were down 4-1 early in the second half but managed to rally late in the game to win 5-4,” Attard recalled.

“As a coaching group we were a bit nervous at half-time but after listening to the boys talk and pump each other up, I was confident they could win.”

The team, led by coach John Burns and trainer Carl Raven, is hopeful of remaining together for many more years to come and continuing to create an OzTag dynasty.

“They can keep playing together right up until U17’s,” Attard said.

On the back of some superb bowling from all-rounder Michael Castle and international Pat Cummins, momentum eventually swung back Penrith’s way and they appeared to have the edge heading into the final overs.

Castle was named Man of the Match – an easy decision after his 38 with the bat and bowling figures of 5/13.

“Michael played out of his skin, he’s only been back a couple of games after having a bulging disc in his back for most of the summer,” Small revealed.

“He was one of our big off-season recruits from Parramatta. It really put a spanner in the works when he got injured at the start of the year.”

Penrith’s first grade team will now turn their attention to the Belvidere Cup, where they are still well in contention to seal a spot in the finals.

Small believes last weekend’s thriller will give the side plenty of confidence.

Patton’s signature comes hot on the heels of the re-signing of key defender Adam Tomlinson and attacking backman Zac Williams.

After being the Giants’ first ever draft pick in 2011, Patton is heading into the 2017 season coming off a career-best year which saw him play 23 games and kick 38 goals.

The 23-year-old said he was keen to reward the faith shown in him following two knee reconstructions early in his career.

“The club stuck by me when I was struggling with injuries and now I’m really happy to put pen to paper on a long-term deal to stay at the club,” he said.

mu Plains Sports Club has received a cheque for $25,000 to install new hard surface paths along the popular golf course.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres hand delivered the Community Building Partnership Program grant to Club CEO Andrew Gardner last Friday afternoon.

“It was my pleasure to recommend Emu Sports Club/Leonay Golf Course for a grant of $25,000, which will be used for installing hard surface paths on the golf course,” Mr Ayres said.

local terrain has many sloping areas. Due to the course not being flat, people who may have a disability or seniors with mobility issues find it difficult to play the course.

By installing hard surface paths to the needed areas, it will improve accessibility of the course.

Gardner said the current paths are either dirt or uneven and are a possible hazard to both social and competition golfers.

“The upgraded paths will provide safe access for all users and will enhance their golfing experience,” he said.

“Construction is expected to get underway in April and will take two months.”

The entire project is set to cost $50,000.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith are in control against Mosman in Round 14 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval last Saturday, Penrith won the toss and sent Mosman into bat.

Mosman scored 194 before being dismissed after 76 overs. Jake Wholohan was best with the ball for Penrith taking 5/40. When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they scored 1/58 before stumps. Ryan Gibson currently sits on 31 not out. Play between Penrith and Mosman will resume this Saturday morning.

BASEBALL: Penrith are through to the next round of the NSW State Baseball League playoffs. Penrith defeated Cronulla 2-0 in Game 1 before Cronulla hit back 7-1 in Game 2. In yet another nail-biting contest, Penrith defeated Cronulla 3-2 in Game 3 to advance to the Finals.

Penrith will next take on Baulkham Hills for a place in their third straight Grand Final.

BASKETBALL: The 2017 Youth League basketball competition will get underway this weekend.

Penrith’s Division 1 women’s team will look to defend their 2016 title when they take on the Bankstown Bruins this Sunday afternoon in the opening round. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 men’s team will go up against the Central Coast Waves on Saturday evening.

AFLW: The GWS Giants have suffered

their biggest loss of the AFL Women’s season, going down to the Brisbane Lions by 34 points. The Giants only scored nine points in the thumping

by Brisbane. GWS will return home tonight when they battle the Melbourne Demons at Blacktown International Sportspark from 5pm.

NETBALL: Giants Netball are on a roll in the new Super Netball competition, disposing of the West Coast Fever 63-49 last weekend. The Giants remain the lone team atop of the competition, undefeated after two rounds. This Saturday the Giants will travel to Melbourne to take on the Collingwood Magpies.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 3 of the NSWRL Junior Representative season wrapped up last weekend with mixed results for Penrith’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams. In the SG Ball competition, Penrith defeated the Sydney Roosters 20-12 while in the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith went down to the Roosters 24-18. This Saturday Penrith will take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in both grades at Belmore Sports Ground.

OZTAG: Penrith OzTag Association was forced to postpone Tuesday mixed semi-finals this week due to the wet weather. The games have been rescheduled to next week.

ictorious players and officials from the Penrith Cricket Club were still celebrating at Howell Oval on Monday morning following one of the most momentous occasions in the club’s rich history the night before.

Last Sunday Penrith’s first grade side recorded a miracle last ball victory over Hawkesbury to claim Grand Final glory in the NSW Premier Cricket Limited Overs competition.

Hawkesbury needed five runs from the final over to claim victory while Penrith needed one wicket.

The game could’ve finished either way but a run-out on the last ball gave the Cats a one run win – and their first title in 15 years.

“It was the most incredible game of cricket… the Cardiac Unit at Nepean Hospital was certainly in our sights at one stage,” Penrith head coach, Steve Small said.

“The crowd support from both sides was incredible; the game was played in a really good spirit.”

Earlier, the match was reduced to 35 overs each due to wet conditions at the ground.
