ederal Lindsay MP Fiona Scott says the “have a go” Budget delivered by Treasurer Joe Hockey on Tuesday night is a winner for local families and small businesses.

“This Budget will deliver jobs, growth and opportunity in a way that is responsible, measured and fair,” Ms Scott said.

“It is the next step in the Coalition Government’s long-term economic plan to build a stronger, safer and more prosperous future for all Australians.”

Ms Scott said changes to the age pension will make it more sustainable and fairer, despite cuts to 91,000 part pensioners.

New measures in the Budget will see wealthy retirees’ entitlements end, and more ‘modest’ retirees’ payments increase.

“The Government is providing more assistance to pensioners with modest means and at the same time, is being responsible by making the age pension system more sustainable,” she said.

“We’ve got the balance right – with no change or a higher pension for 90 per cent of age pensioners.”

Ms Scott welcomed Mr Hockey’s announcement that the timetable back to a Budget surplus remains unchanged from last year.

“Our economic plan is working. Economic growth is up; jobs are up – nearly 250,000 new jobs since the election and retail sales are at record levels – as are new dwelling approvals,” Ms Scott said.

rom tax cuts to write-offs, Tuesday night’s Federal Budget provided more support to small businesses than ever before, and now western Sydney’s businesses can start spending and drive the economy further.

Jo Tomic from Jamjo Home and Gifts in St Marys said the biggest Budget impact for her two-year-old business was the immediate $20,000 tax write-off for individual purchases of equipment, computers and tools.

“Because we are still new, we are still pouring money back into the business, so our profit isn’t at an all-time high. We are still building it and finding equipment, so to know we can write that off is really great,” she said.

“We just put in a new POS system, so for us to monitor our products, profits and business really well makes a difference.

“It was quite expensive to put that in, but because we have that system we can put in place fittings to present the business in a way that we want to be seen – we can utilise our space better and buy more stock.”

As Jamjo is an unincorporated small

business, Mrs Tomic is not entitled to the 1.5 per cent tax cut that up to 780,000 incorporated small businesses will receive, that will cut their company tax rate to 28.5 per cent.

Like the rest of the 1.7 million sole traders, Mrs Tomic will receive a five per cent tax discount from July 1 this year, of up to $1,000 in total, costing the Government around $1.8 billion.

“That’s exciting because we can then reinvest that money back into the business to build it,” she said.

“We didn’t throw a whole lot of money in to begin with, we figured we will grow it as times change and as more customers come in so these little incremental things that come along are great for us.”

Small businesses will also find it cheaper to stay more connected, with the abolition of the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) for workrelated portable electronic devices in a $40 million move to cut red tape within the FBT system.

Plus for people who don’t have a business just yet, it will be easier to start one.

Business registration will be streamlined, and new startups will be able to immediately deduct the expenses involved instead of writing them off over five years as previously required.

This Budget has all been about strategy

The Budget itself has also been clearly crafted as the antidote to last year’s mess.

It’s been obvious for some time that the Government needed to win back mum and dad voters with a Budget that spoke to them, that made sense and that wasn’t prone to a string of embarrassing backflips.

Of course, if you listen to Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen, the Budget is no good. Mr Negativity has been in full voice this week.

Truth is though, it’s a good Budget, and a Budget that Mr Abbott and Mr Hockey had to deliver.

All things being equal, Mr Abbott’s leadership should stay solid during the Budget response period. He’ll have one or two hurdles just before Christmas to jump over and if he succeeds there, he’ll definitely lead the party to the 2016 election.

As for Mr Hockey, I fear the writing may already be on the wall given how this has played out in the lead-up.

For Lindsay MP Fiona Scott, the Budget couldn’t have been better.

In this electorate, childcare and small business are two key areas, and both have been tackled extensively in this Budget.

Local small businesses will see a range of benefits including tax cuts and the ability to claim an immediate tax deduction for items up to $20,000.

Parents will see a better childcare system that helps them get back to work quicker with the knowledge that it’s a financially viable option.

The Budget allows all MPs to go back into their electorates with positive news in their pockets and happy smiles on their faces.

What a difference 12 months can make.

There’s been some criticism that this Budget has been ‘soft’, but both politically and economically, it is a good one.

If anything, it’s pretty close to an ‘election Budget’.

Can anyone smell an early poll in the works?

On Tuesday night we watched Treasurer Joe Hockey deliver probably the most stage managed Budget in Australia’s history.

Stage managed because it needed to be – it has been billed for months now as the Budget by which Tony Abbott’s short term future as Prime Minister may well be decided.

When Mr Abbott’s leadership survived back in February, political commentators and experts very quickly turned to the Budget as his next hurdle to jump over.

Stuff up the Budget, they said, and it’s curtains for this nation’s 28th Prime Minister.

It is no surprise then that this Budget has all been about strategy.

There’s been the leaks to the Sunday papers, primarily focused around childcare given the type of readership those publications boast.

More detailed financial leaks found their way to the pages of The Australian, as the Government’s publicity machine went into an election-style campaign in preparation for the Budget.

By the time Mr Hockey stood up to deliver his speech on Tuesday evening, most of the air had been let out of the tyres.

And as much as Laurie Oakes, David Speers and the like were all salivating over the drama of Budget night, most people were over watching ‘MasterChef’ by the time Mr Hockey delivered his crucial speech.

Perhaps that was all part of the stage management, too. After all, despite being the man with ‘Treasurer’ on his business card, it has been Tony Abbott and Social Services Minister Scott Morrison who have been front and centre selling the Budget in the lead-up to Tuesday night.

Mr Morrison’s gaffe regarding Greg Bird on Monday didn’t help his cause but overall, he did a solid job selling the Budget.

Some would say he also did a good job in selling himself as Mr Hockey’s replacement. Only time will tell on that one.

Families using childcare set to be $30 a week better off from 2017 arents in Lindsay are set to benefit from changes to childcare confirmed in Tuesday’s Budget.

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott said the 2015 Budget delivers a $4.4 billion ‘Jobs for Families’ package to give parents more choice and opportunity to work.

“The 2015 Budget delivers on the Government’s commitment to support families by making childcare simpler, more affordable, more flexible, and more accessible,” Ms Scott said.

“We know families are faced with costs when parents want to return to the workforce. This package gives families greater choice.

“Having two parents in paid employment has become a necessity for most families because of changes that have taken place in our society and economy over many years. All mothers work hard, and many are also in paid employment.

“The Government will invest an additional $3.5 billion over five years reforming childcare assistance to establish a new and simpler Child Care Subsidy from July 1, 2017.

“The Child Care Subsidy will provide assistance to meet the cost of childcare for parents who are working, looking for work, training, studying or undertaking any other recognised activity such as volunteering.”

The simplified Child Care Subsidy will replace the current Child Care Benefit, Child Care Rebate and Jobs, Education and Training Child Care Fee Assistance programmes.

Stay-at-home parents are the big losers as they’ll lose out on childcare subsidies if their household income is more than $65,000.

Ms Scott said the ‘Jobs for Families’ package would put downward pressure on childcare costs overall.

Families using childcare in 2017, on family incomes of between $65,000 and $170,000 will be around $30 a week better off. Those on higher incomes will, on average, continue to receive the same level of support.

“Families on incomes of less than $65,000 per year will receive ongoing access to early childhood learning, and can be eligible for additional financial support through the Child Care Safety Net,” Ms Scott said.

Police snapshot Regentville: Man on the run after service station robbery

Colyton: Man arrested after bottle shop robbery

A person is currently on the run after allegedly conducting a robbery at a service station on Mulgoa Road in Regentville last week. Described as a 25 to 30-year-old with blonde hair and blue eyes and about 175cm to 178cm tall, the person allegedly entered the service station at about 4.50am on Wednesday, May 6.

The person allegedly was armed with a metal bar which they used to allegedly threaten the employee.

After the employee was able to get to a safe spot, the person allegedly stole the money from the till and got into a dark coloured car.

Police are appealing for any information about the car that is described as being similar to a Nissan Skyline or a Nissan Silvia with a loud exhaust. You can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A man has been charged following investigations into an alleged armed robbery of a bottle shop in Colyton last week.

On Thursday, May 7, two men entered a bottle shop on Day Street at about 1.20pm, one man allegedly armed with a machete.

The pair took a carton of liquor and approached a 51-year-old working behind the counter. The armed man allegedly threatened the employee, demanding cash.

A 71-year-old, who was also working in the store, approached the unarmed man and attempted to stop him when an altercation broke out between the two.

The armed pair managed to flee the scene with the carton of liquor.

At about 12.40pm on Saturday, May 9, police executed a search warrant at a home on Brisbane Street in Oxley Park.

That night, police arrested a 34-year-old man who was taken to St Marys Police Station and refused bail.

Police urge anyone with information to call crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Penrith: Local police swoop on public places

On Thursday, May 7, officers from Penrith Local Area Command conducted a drug dog operation, targeting the Penrith CBD and licensed premises.

Officers also went to the train station and local bus stops with a police dog for a short period of time.

They gave out 16 legal processes, some for possess and some for supply.

The legal processes included Court Attendance Notices after police allegedly found drug substances, from green vegetable matter to white powders.

Penrith: Woman attempts to steal from supermarket A woman has allegedly attempted to leave a Penrith supermarket with a trolley worth of groceries on Mother’s Day. The 37-year-old was stopped just after noon on Sunday, May 10, with a significant amount of shopping in her trolley, allegedly unpaid for.

Police issued the Cranebrook resident with a future court attendance notice.

he two kilometre stretch of dual carriageway on The Northern Road between Andrews Road and Borrowdale Way, Cranebrook was opened by the project’s developer, Lend Lease and State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres on Monday.

General Manager for Lend Lease’s Communities business, Arthur Ilias said through internalised, condensed construction, two stages of the road upgrades were delivered in 2015, instead of 2020 as first planned.

“Lend Lease has got its own roads and infrastructure business, so it made sense to us to work with our internal business to bring that together,” he said.

“This was going to be delivered in two

stages, so to deliver it in one stage and use our own business in collaboration to fast track it, I think it saved money, it delivered it quicker, I think it’s a great outcome for the community.”

The road was formerly two undivided lanes, but now boasts four lanes with improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities and three signalled intersections.

Mr Ilias said the early delivery demonstrates Lend Lease’s commitment to delivering a vibrant community and strong ties to the wider Penrith area, and in particular Jordan Springs.

“The upgrades will reduce traffic congestion, give a boost to local business by improving transport links, and contribute to greater road safety,” he said.

Mr Ayres said the fast-tracked delivery of the $25 million project is a testament to good planning.

“It’s a really good example of what happens when you plan communities incredibly well, and the sales record of Jordan Springs I think is a reflection of the quality planning that’s been put in place,” he said.

“The combination of fantastic community and the right infrastructure has been backed up by strong commercial demand... It’s a partnership between the State Government and Lend Lease.”

Mr Ayres said the upgrades were funded completely by Lend Lease, with the State Government providing support in the form of planning and project management work. He said travel times and safety will be improved.

“The improvement work which started in 2013 aims to reduce crash risk after 39 people were injured in 47 crashes to the five years to July 1, 2012,” Mr Ayres said.

Council votes to support Badgerys Creek airport DALE DRINKWATER

western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek now has the support of Penrith City Council, but it didn’t come without a fight.

In a meeting on Monday night, Penrith City Council moved a motion from Councillor Greg Davies to accept the Federal Government’s decision to build an airport on the Government owned land at Badgerys Creek.

“We are in a situation now where both the Federal and State Governments have made a decision, they are going to build it,” Cr Davies said.

“I’ve seen the cons, I’ve seen the pros, and somewhere in the middle there is some truth, but at the end of the day all we know is the decision has been made – there is going to be an airport there.”

Cr Davies said if Council wants to get any benefit for Penrith from the airport, Council needs to work with the Government and be a part of the decision making process.

“We need to get something that’s going to benefit our residents out of this deal, if we continue the line we are going down we are going to have an airport with no upside… we have to be part of the process

if we want to get anything out of it,” he said.

Councillor John Thain said he reluctantly agreed with Cr Davies’ motion to change the Council report and support the airport because residents have indicated they do want one.

“I think our residents want jobs for themselves and for their children, they’ve made it pretty clear they think that’s where job opportunities will be,” he said.

However, Councillors were not unanimous on the decision to support the airport, with Councillors Kevin Crameri, Marcus Cornish, Michelle Tormey and Ben Goldfinch acutely against the motion.

Cr Cornish accused Council of “rolling over” and doing nothing, and said that Council won’t get anything positive out of supporting the airport.

“For Council to roll over and give up and do whatever the Federal Government wants to do is appalling. We are here to represent the people of Penrith, not throw our hands up and say we can’t do anything,” he said.

The motion also outlined that Council will seek that protocols will be applied to minimise night time noise, and will work with the Government to unlock the potential for the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area.

enrith City Council will review their agreement with the developers of the Cranebrook Shopping Centre amid revelations developers are no longer undertaking construction in two stages as Council believed.

The Western Weekender revealed last week that the shopping centre is set to be completely closed while it is renovated.

Councillor John Thain said he believes complete demolition and construction was not in the development application (DA) that went before the Joint Regional Planning Panels (JRPP).

“The Expression of Interest was always about a staged development, the application they put into the JRPP was always for a staged development,” he said.

“We have certainly been blindsided by the way [the developers] have conducted themselves, and now they are trying to twist our arm to get what they want, and I can assure you we are not going to lay down and take it. “[The developers are] trying to force the issue to their own advantage, which is not to the advantage of the community or shop keepers.”

“If you read the conditions of consent

there is not one condition that says we need to do it, there are no conditions it must be staged.”

He said since AusPacific secured ownership in November last year, Ritchie’s IGA did in fact sign a surrender of lease and are now waiting on AusPacific’s notice to vacate.

“They’ve decided it’s not worth them continuing on until their lease ends in December 2016,” he said.

“We want to make sure IGA trades while the specialty stores are there. We don’t want them to leave when they decide, and yes they will be waiting on an official notice.”

Ritchie’s IGA does not have a ‘demolition clause’ in their lease agreement that entitles them to six months’ notice to vacate for demolition, and CEO Fred Harrison said it could be anywhere from six to 10 months away.

“We will continue trading until we are notified otherwise, the ball is in [the developer’s] court, they need to come back to us with a date,” he said.

“We thought [we would stay] longer not shorter, but if there are going to be issues around dust, food safety OH&S, we can’t subject ourselves just to be a stick in the mud.”

Fighting the cancer battle together Hundreds of thousands of dollars expected to be raised at Relay for Life this weekend JADE ALIPRANDI

ancer survivors, family members of those who have lost the battle and the community in general will flock to Howell Oval this weekend for the annual Relay for Life.

The event will take place across Saturday and Sunday.

Co-Chair for this year’s Relay For Life, Frances Cini, said there are high hopes for the 2015 event.

“We are hoping the funds will be bigger once money is banked by the teams at the end of the weekend,” she said.

“Relay for Life is all about raising awareness and the funds needed for cancer research, equipment for hospitals, and transport for patients to their treatment.”

Community members willing to participate can register up until Saturday morning from 7.00am with the opening ceremony starting at 9.30am.

Ms Cini said she originally started with the Cancer Council and Relay For Life after losing loved ones from cancer.

“I feel as though I’m giving something back to the community and that I’m helping and making a difference in some way,” she said.

So far Penrith Cancer Council have raised nearly $170,000 doing Relay for Life

this year, with a previous effort of over $400,000 last year.

“I think it’s an amazing effort by everybody that’s involved or has donated and I’m over the moon,” Ms Cini said.

“We can put it towards research and one day hopefully find a cure to this horrible disease.”

Relay For Life will be held at Howell Oval on Station Street in Penrith from Saturday, May 16 at 9.30am to Sunday, May 17 at 10am. You can call the Cancer Council on 9354 2007 for more information.

Message to the future: Apartment building to house time capsule

Investigative journalist to hold special talk at Penrith Library JADE ALIPRANDI

nvestigative journalist, writer and author, Ross Coulthart, is paying Penrith a visit next week as part of the Sydney Writer’s Festival.

After penning his book Charles Bean: If people really knew, Mr Coulthart will be talking at Penrith Library about why he wrote the book and why he loves researching the past.

“I love reporting about history, it’s such a fascinating thing,” he said.

“War is where a lot of incredibly good things and bad things can and do happen but it’s nice, as a journalist, to go back to a story from 100 years ago and use the journalistic skills I have now to find out more about the story.”

Having won five Walkley journalism awards and a Logie for his work as an investigative reporter, Mr Coulthart said there is always a story to be told, past and present.

“Some of the most important stories that we should be covering are from parts of history,” he said.

“Wherever you go there is a story there, someone always has a story.”

His new biography covers bits and pieces of what Charles Bean saw during the war and what he ended up writing for print.

Purchasers and investors of the units were given the opportunity to place something inside a time capsule.

The 32-unit building will now be home to local residents’ items including letters, photographs, a USB with futuristic movies on it, a mobile phone, and current Australian coins.

“I think it’s fantastic to capture these

moments in time and bury them under the ground,” Architect for the building, Peter Morson said.

“It’s great to see the enthusiasm from the buyers and the community with what they have put inside the capsule.”

The idea is to have a plaque around where the capsule will be buried explaining what it is in writing.

“The owners will now have an emotional investment in the building forever,” Managing Director of Real Estate at PRD Nationwide in Penrith, Darren Latty said.

The list of prices and the marketing copy was also thrown into the capsule for future residents of the building to see.

Ross Coulthart is coming to Penrith With access in public archives to Bean’s original notes and diaries, Mr Coulthart was able to find out aspects of what Mr Bean would have seen that no one would have known about at the time.

His talk will reveal more details about what he discovered.

In a submission to the Office of Local Government, Council has outlined how they intend to meet State Government financial and sustainability benchmarks by the years 2019-2020.

The submission is a requirement in the Government’s ‘Fit for the Future’ reform package, and aims to provide communities the confidence that their Council will continue to deliver quality services. Mayor Ross Fowler said Council’s current figures and their long-term financial strategy show they are on track to meet those challenges. “Meeting the benchmarks means we are a Council that is sustainable in that we have capacity to meet our ongoing operational costs... we look after our infrastructure and services by maximising our resources and working strategically to leverage economies of scale [and] operating efficiently,” he said.

street into an industrial area, but concerns were raised over increased traffic, increased risk of flood on surrounding properties, and the impact of surrounding property prices as a result of industrial development.

The proposal received 38 submissions during its exhibition period, with 20 of them opposing the plan, 10 seeking advice on the site’s exact location, six from government agencies and two asked for additional information.

Council considered these submissions along with a report by Shaun Lawer, Senior Planner at GHD Pty Ltd, and decided to not proceed with the current planning proposal as it is on flood prone land.

Council has taken aim at bringing more arts and culture to western Sydney with a proposed Mayoral Arts and Culture Summit to be held in late June or July. Penrith City Council feels that outer western Sydney is overlooked by the State and Federal Governments when it comes to providing equitable funding to support arts and culture. The Mayoral Arts and Cultural Summit will bring together the Minister for Arts, and local State and Federal Members, artists, educators, cultural groups and businesses to demonstrate the need for the growth of arts and culture.

Trouble at the Emus I enjoy reading your sports articles with interest and as a former union player (including a stint for the Emus in the Shute Shield), I took great interest in this week’s story (Western Weekender May 8). I attend several home matches each season and there are a number of key elements lacking within the club and its playing squad. There is however no disputing the commitment and effort each week from the players and support staff. This is no criticism of their efforts. First and foremost, money talks these days. When you are not winning matches, you don’t attract sponsorship. Without money, you will struggle to attract and sustain a high calibre of players and to secure a fair portion of the available talent pool. Last year we saw the makings of a good 1st grade squad, only to lose players to other more financially sound clubs. We need a few committed local businesses to come on board, recognise it will be a long term commitment, results will not occur overnight. It needs to be a marriage. Recently whilst watching a home game, it was

apparent that our first grade team in comparison (played Eastwood) were lacking commitment to the breakdown and did not have the same level of fitness, speed or skills in general play. We played well in patches but not a full 80 minutes. This alone would suggest our training levels, attendance and commitment is lacking. The Shute Shield is played at a level much higher than weekend park football. We played like a useful 2nd if not 3rd grade squad. The Eastwood team showed great camaraderie (on and off the field), they also looked much fitter and stronger across the park. The club needs to do some soul searching, there is nothing more demoralising to a squad and indeed the entire club than to be thrashed each week, perhaps the Emus are at a level or two too high. Perhaps, the results on the weekend are a by product of what occurs (or does not occur) off the field. I would like to see some local businesses back the Emus financially. Help secure and attract quality players to be a part of a long standing club. Penrith may be in league heartland but there is a massive

pool of talented league and union players not getting a chance. We need to offer incentives to lure those wanting a chance to come over and shine. A winning and competitive culture on and off the field will produce results on the field. I hold no administrative role within the club, so I talk entirely from the heart. I have held senior administrative positions in other sports clubs and professionally, and understand the importance of a sound foundation, positive attitudes and a winning culture.

This club can and will succeed, the clock is ticking however. Let’s start by getting locals behind the club, come up on a Saturday, watch a few games, have a sandwich and a few beers, and help get some money behind the club. Players, take a good look at why you joined the club, what do you want to achieve, what do you bring to the squad? Then look at each of your team mates, make up for their short falls on the field, knowing they do the same for you. Play until you drop, have a never say die attitude both at training and on match day. The wins will come.

Worried about NDIS Failing to address the embedded relationship between housing and other supports for people with a disability could prove the rock on which the National Disability Insurance Scheme founders.

Governments need to wake up to the opportunities and the responsibilities at their fingertips.

Seven hundred million dollars every year has been set aside within National Disability Insurance Agency funding to address housing issues but, instead, those able to effect the greatest change are fiddling while Rome burns.

Tackling the housing shortage for people with a disability, would not only demonstrate a genuine commitment to choice and independence, but crucially, it would begin to untangle the

unhealthy relationship between where you live and who offers you care. No doubt the findings of the Senate Inquiry into this issue will bring that uncomfortable truth out into the cold light of day.

As an accommodation provider for 608 people with disabilities, Endeavour Foundation is keenly aware that people may be deterred from raising issues when housing is intrinsically linked with support. But as an organisation that has always advocated for the rights of people with a disability, we cannot remain silent. If we don’t fix housing along with the introduction of the NDIS, we haven’t fixed anything.

Morning tea with a big difference Locals urged to become a host for an ‘Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’ event on May 28 JADE ALIPRANDI

n its 22nd year, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is the leading fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

On May 28, colleagues, families and friends will gather around to have a very special morning tea.

Ruth Marshall from Hobbysew in Penrith is doing it a little differently, as the team has done for the past 12 years.

“We teach a number of classes and the girls are able to get involved and help make a quilt to then raffle off,” Ms Marshall said.

“They all do a little block of the quilt each which helps make them a big part of it.”

There are currently 23,000 hosts for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea with a goal of 36,000 hosts by the end of the campaign.

“It’s wonderful to be a part of the campaign in this way because cancer touches a number of the girls in our classes so we are really pleased we can help make some money towards it,” Ms Marshall said.

Hobbysew has previously made upwards of $5000 when raffling off their quilt each year.

A Glimpse of College Life

I

t has been an extremely busy start to term two at St Dominic’s College, however what better time than now to provide the community with a look inside our green gates.

The College recently celebrated Founders Day which recognises our patron saint, Dominic Savio who died at the age of 14.

Although St Dominic lived a short life it was also a full life, he is a role model to our students and someone we encourage them to channel in their lives.

Wednesday 6 May saw the College awash with roses as we celebrated and recognised our mothers. Students and Staff alike invited

Mother’s Day 2015 Mass and Breakfast their mothers and grandmothers to attend the College for mass and breakfast. St Dominic’s is a community and we chose this day to specially honour these very important women in our lives and the instrumental role they play in educating our students.

For the past three weeks the College has competed in the Catholic Schools Debating Competition, each Friday evening our students have represented St Dominic’s with pride and skill. The ability for our boys to be able to analyse and comprehend current affairs issues as well as interact in a dialogue on those issues is an invaluable skill. The great success that the boys have achieved in the

competition so far is a credit to them and their coaches.

On the sporting field the College has continued its legacy of success recently winning the U15’s AFL Giants Cup. It is a great testament to the hard work of boys and their coaches who put in many extra hours of training and preparation outside of school hours.

The College is extremely proud of our students and staff and frequently recognises them on our website and Newsletter. We encourage the wider community to go online and view the Newsletter to keep up to date with the events and achievements of the College.

y chance, or by luck of the draw some might say, students and teachers from St Marys South Public School were lucky enough to meet Prince Harry at the Opera House last week.

What was supposed to be a school excursion to the Botanic Gardens turned into a visit from the royal himself.

The students were the first group to meet Harry as he made his way from the boat he arrived on to the Opera House.

Melissa Stannett said meeting Prince Harry was an exciting experience.

“It was very exciting but I didn’t know what to say to him,” she said.

Prince Harry spoke to the kids about what it’s like to live as a royal.

“He spoke to us about what it’s like in a castle and why he wasn’t wearing his crown,” Melissa said.

Year 3 teacher, Meghan Loader, was one of the few from the day who received a hug from Harry after one of her students yelled out “my teacher wants to marry you”.

“It was good! It gave the kids a real kick, which was quite funny,” she said.

esidents from the Penrith area are invited to watch a competitive 200km cycling fundraiser next Friday, titled ‘Race For Change’.

The fundraiser is being held by Benevolent, Australia’s first charity, who work to identify social needs in communities and work towards fixing them.

With a current focus on their Claymore Kids Action Network (CKAN Do) program, Benevolent is aiming to raise $200,000 which will help support the program for the next two years.

CKAN Do focuses on almost 50 children from the Claymore area and western suburbs.

Manager of Community Programs McArthur, Mark Pulford, said with the help of staff members, the kids are changing their previous habits.

“The kids have built their confidence up and have created positive relationships within the group,” he said.

“For a program that has been running for almost eight months, it has been really successful so far which is demonstrated in the children, who are also now describing potential careers they wouldn’t have necessarily considered before the program.”

Activities are offered to the children to help with their development including in-school tutoring, a leadership council, an after school program, workshops on anti-bullying and an interactive media program.

Race for Change is on next Friday, May 22 from 9am to 5pm at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith.

Decisions, decisions: Why you need to make a call!

aking decisions for your future can be really difficult, can’t it? When it involves a degree of risk, a substantial amount of finances and/or the possibility of failure, it can be hard to make a decision.

Much of the angst around decisionmaking is because we want to make the ‘right’ decision.

We want to make sure we ‘cover all bases’ and have answers for every possibility to reduce the risk of failure.

But have you considered that perhaps there isn’t always one right decision?

Quite often, there could be a number of directions to head, and more than one of them will be the ‘right’ thing to do.

Sometimes, it may be that a decision you made ended badly, but the lessons you learnt from it, and the direction you took because of it, resulted in a much better outcome than your original idea.

Often it comes down to taking action: indecision can be more crippling than a ‘bad’ decision.

A tried and true method for decision making is to list the pros and cons of

your decision: what will I gain if I do this? What will I lose if I don’t do this?

When you have done this, ask a trusted person to read your list.

There is a high likelihood that they will look at some of the disadvantages you have listed and challenge you about them.

Often what seems like a big deal to us, is not so big when viewed in a wider context.

If some of the items on your ‘cons’ list are related to fear of the unknown, you need to cross those ones off immediately!

Letting fear dictate your decisions will result in inertia or poor decision making.

Talk to the people who can give you all the practical information you need (for example, your accountant) and then weigh up your options.

Listen to your gut instinct: it has gotten you this far in business and it will take you further again!

It seems the big winners from the 2015 Budget are small business owners. The budget has been sold as a $5.5 billion pledge for small businesses, which will help small businesses invest more, grow more, and employ more.

Here is a rundown on how the Budget will affect small businesses: • Small business tax rate cut to 28.5 per cent from July 1, 2015. A 1.5 per cent cut to the current company tax rate will apply to small businesses with less than $2m of turnover. For unincorporated businesses, there will be a five per cent tax offset on business profits capped at $1,000 per individual for each income year.

• Small business can immediately write-off assets up to $20,000. All small businesses with less than $2m of turnover will get an immediate tax deduction for any individual assets they buy costing less than $20,000. (Currently, the threshold sits at $1,000). Small businesses can apply this $20,000 rule to as many individual items as they wish. This is effective immediately.

• Startup businesses get immediate

deduction for professional expenses.

From July 1, 2015 professional expenses such as accounting and legal advice when starting up a new business is now immediately tax deductible.

• CGT roll-over relief for change of entity structure. Small business with less than $2m of turnover can change their business structure (e.g. to a trust) without paying Capital Gains Tax. Effective from July 1, 2016.

• No FBT on work-related electronic devices. From April 1, 2016 small businesses with turnover of less than $2m can provide employees with more than one work-related portable electronic device without Fringe Benefits Tax. This is designed to help small business employees stay connected in the digital economy.

• Crowd-sourced equity funding.

Funding to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission to implement and monitor a regulatory framework to facilitate the use of crowd-sourced equity funding, including simplified reporting and disclosure requirements.

Turning back Time

The day Tench found the Nepean Dale Drinkwater goes back in time to when British explorer Watkin Tench first discovered Penrith, and the amazing Nepean River...

B

efore Penrith was the economic powerhouse of business, infrastructure and housing it is today, it was once pristine Australian bushland home to the Aboriginal population, who had lived off the land for over 30,000 years.

It wasn’t until Captain Watkin Tench made the first European discovery of the Nepean River that begun the 200 year transformation of Penrith City.

Tench was born in England, and in 1786, at just 28-years-old, volunteered to serve in New South Wales. Tench was placed in charge of marines in the transport ship ‘Charlotte’ in the First Fleet that reached Botany Bay on January 20, 1788.

After spending some time in Australia, Tench is noted to have been very intelligent and compassionate, making sympathetic observations in relation to Aborigines that were ahead of the times, suggesting they had qualities white man could imitate.

On June 26, 1789, just a year and a half after the First Fleet landed in Australia,

a curious Tench headed west to discover Australia further.

Tench was accompanied by an exploring party, who walked together from settlement in Rosehill directly west, reaching Prospect Hill and stopping to view the surroundings and get their bearings.

From there they walked toward what they saw as ‘blue hills’, but as it grew dark, stopped between St Marys and Penrith to camp for the night.

At the break of dawn, the party began their second day of travelling, and after just an hour, they came across the broad, fast running Nepean River. They were the first Europeans to ever set their sights on what is now Penrith City.

Documents from Penrith City Library state that “the party reached the river at Emu Fork, crossed at Bird’s Eye Corner, the bend south-west of Upper Castlereagh”.

Tench’s first view of the enormous river was from near where the M4 Western Motorway bridge currently stands near Tench Reserve. In one of his many journals, an articulate Tench later described what he saw that day that impressed him so much about the area.

“We found ourselves on the banks of a river, nearly as broad as the Thames at Putney and apparently of great depth,” he wrote.

Tench was a curious man and had a cultivated scientific interest.

He spent a great deal of his spare time exploring, taking samples of soil and analysing the Australian bush, feeding his fascination with everything west of the Sydney settlement.

Tench’s largest contribution to the settlement in Sydney was his habit of keeping a journal, in which he described discovering the Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers were in fact one river.

It wasn’t Tench, however, who named the Nepean River, rather Governor Arthur Phillip, who had started exploring west of Sydney just a month before Tench.

Tench’s expedition was to further Governor Phillip’s discoveries, and after finding the huge river that would go on to supporting settlements for years to come, Phillips named it after Evan Nepean, a British Cabinet Minister who played a large role in organising the First Fleet.

Penrith’s discovery on June 27, 1789

is one hardly recognised, with the city basing its foundation on the construction of the first Government building in 1815, and celebrating Penrith’s bicentenary this year in 2015.

Of course, Tench Reserve was named after Watkin Tench.

A

few weeks ago, Manly were under more pressure than Clive Palmer’s belt buckle after a big Chinese meal.

And while they still sit on the bottom of the NRL ladder, victories over Melbourne and Newcastle in their last two outings have well and truly put the Sea Eagles back into finals contention.

This Monday night they take on a Penrith side that produced the toughest performance I’ve seen from them all year against the Broncos last Friday night.

It was a heartbreaking finish but with Jamie Soward back in charge, it was clear the Panthers were a more disciplined, structured outfit.

And while Soward got most of the praise, the return of Elijah Taylor shouldn’t go without mention.

Back from injury, his incredible defen-

sive efforts were on show again with 49 tackles in 61 minutes.

Manly’s win over Newcastle last weekend was on the back of a stellar performance by halfback Daly Cherry-Evans, who will be aiming to convince Queensland selectors that he deserves his spot on the interchange bench after suggestions that he may miss out when the team is named next week.

Cherry-Evans has had a tough three months with contract speculation at the forefront of his mind, but in recent weeks he’s done his talking on the field and proved why he’s one of the game’s leading playmakers.

When Cherry-Evans and Brett Stewart are both on the field at Brookvale, Manly grow another leg.

Last Sunday’s win was a trademark Manly performance with Stewart scoring two tries and Cherry-Evans involved in anything and everything.

The Panthers, however, match CherryEvans and Stewart through Jamie Soward and Matt Moylan, albeit with a little less flair.

Penrith toughed it out against the Broncos last week but in the end, the home side won the mental battle. It would have been an exhausting encounter to be a part of and with master coach Wayne Bennett at

the helm, Brisbane just know how to close out those games a little better than the Panthers.

The Panthers will be without Tyrone Peachey for this match after he was suspended for his dangerous throw on Adam Blair, but in a huge boost, will welcome back hooker James Segeyaro.

That allows Cleary to shift Apisai Koroisau to five-eighth to partner Soward. Peter Wallace is rated a slim chance of returning.

On their last trip to Brookvale Oval, the Panthers lost in heartbreaking and controversial circumstances back in 2014. But the two sides have already met this season, with the Panthers easily accounting for the Sea Eagles only a few weeks ago. It’ll be a little bit tougher this time around given Manly’s recent good form, but a similar game plan wouldn’t go astray.

The Panthers need to shut down Manly on the fringes and take them on in the middle. Stay committed, stay focused and the Panthers should have the talent to win the match.

There is no doubt that Idris’ season-ending injury has only added to the speculation and given the big centre time to think about his future both on and off the field.

Brown’s future not certain Lewis Brown says he wants to stay at the Panthers next season but the off-contract star may be forced out due to salary cap issues

anthers star and New Zealand international Lewis Brown says his number one priority is to remain at Penrith beyond this season, but only time will tell if he gets his

wish.

In recent weeks the 28-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs, including the Wests Tigers, who could afford his services for next year and beyond.

But Brown, a Kiwi incumbent, has quashed rumours that he’s engaged with any other clubs besides the Panthers.

“There have been a few rumours I’m going places but I haven’t spoken to any other clubs. Only my manager and I have been talking,” Brown told Extra Time.

“Obviously I’d love to stay at the club but apparently there’s some salary cap issues.

“Well see what happens over the next month or so and see if we can work something out. If not, I’ll have to sort something else out but obviously my first intention is to stay here.”

Extra Time understands that Brown is after a significant pay rise with Panthers yet to come to the table with an offer.

“We’ve spoken and they know I want to stay here,” Brown said.

“I’ve just got to let my footy do the talking. The team comes first and I’m a team man.”

Meanwhile, Brown says he’s happy to be back on the field after being sidelined

for more than a month with rib cartilage damage.

When Brown made his return during Penrith’s clash against the Sharks, coach Ivan Cleary selected him as captain and he didn’t disappoint – scoring himself man of the match honours.

“I’ve played a fair few games in the NRL and you’ve got to be a leader. Having the captain next to your name makes you want to lead and I’m enjoying it,” he said.

Ahhh yes, the sweet scent of Origin is in the air again.

No one really knows why this flawed concept works but it just does.

Little has changed in the plot of this state vs state footy drama in 35 years.

Queensland, despite winning eight of the last nine series’, are still for some reason the sentimental favourites just as they were when State of Origin was conceived way back in 1980.

It’ll never work, they said!

You can’t have club team mates playing against each other, they won’t take it seriously, they said.

Somehow the exact opposite happened and it’s been gripping ever since.

So here we are in 2015 and NSW fans think the Maroons are old, arrogant and vulnerable. But are they?

Coach Mal Meninga has no real selection headaches as the team practically picks itself.

They never worry about club form or lack of game time leading into Origin

because that’s not how the Maroons work. Mal simply hands out the jerseys to the same old obvious candidates who never let anyone down.

Even if Mal is forced to blood someone new – no problem, they play like they’ve played Origin all their life.

NSW never seem to have the same luxury. Despite almost always having more choice and depth of talent in key positions, the Blues every year end up in constant debate about who will get picked and who won’t.

Will it be the in-form Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney in the halves this year or the out of form incumbents Trent Hodkinson and Josh Reynolds?

Fullback was up in the air until Josh Dugan had a blinder against Souths on Monday night and put that question finally to bed.

The Blues are a basket case going into game one and the Maroons are sitting back chuckling to themselves.

For me there’s one reason why NSW can and will win again: Laurie Daley.

PANTHERS ARE IN A GOOD PLACE here is definitely something building at Panthers. Over the past two weeks there has been an obvious improvement in attitude and the ruthless ability to compete hard for 80 minutes on the field.

In the home game against the Sharks the foundation built over the last two seasons shone through in the boys’ performance, it wasn’t anything fancy but an iron will to win anything and everything.

Jamie Soward returned last week and added some spark to our attack and steered the team around well on the back of that strong platform the forwards laid.

Don’t ever underestimate how hard it is to win in Brisbane.

We didn’t get the victory at Suncorp Stadium but the team went to Brisbane and competed hard against the form side in the competition.

The players will take a lot of confidence from that experience and know they can match it with the best in the league.

We take on Manly this week and then have two weeks to prepare for our big home game against the Parramatta Eels on Friday, May 29.

of the season, I thought we were unlucky to get our byes so close together and get the full effect of the rest.

But it has worked out perfectly.

Our players returning from injury have time to get their bodies absolutely perfect as well as not playing too many back to back games so early after long stints on the sideline.

If we can keep the effort up for the rest of the season, the calibre of players set to return will definitely add momentum to the side for a strong finish to the regular season.

The Penrith Panthers are now joint leaders of the Holden Cup competition following a 40-24 thumping of the first-placed Brisbane Broncos last Friday night.

The Panthers enjoyed one of their best games of the season, and it all started just three minutes in when PNG sensation Stanton Albert scored the opening try of the game to put the Panthers up 4-0.

Brisbane were next to score and with a conversion jumped out to a narrow 6-4 lead.

The Panthers then scored three times to finish the half, first via the way of Brent Naden, who busted through the line with sheer strength to get over.

The next try came through Corey Harawira-Naaera, who put on a great individual display to put the Panthers up 12-6.

The final try of the half came when Dylan Edwards put up a deft cross kick that wasn’t cleaned up by the Broncos, which saw Harawira-Naera pounce and score.

Penrith were in front 18-6 at the break.

The win did come at a cost with Nu’u Akeripa (hamstring) expected to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.

The Panthers now face the long trip to North Sydney Oval this Saturday afternoon when they take on the last placed North Sydney Bears, keen to atone for their heavy 38-6 loss in Bathurst back in round two. The Panthers will be looking for six wins in a row and are keen to maintain pressure on league leaders Mounties but the likes Daryl Millard, Ed Murphy, Cody Walker and Darren Nicholls will be pulling out all the stops to cause an upset win and continue their promising form of late that includes a convincing 32-6 win over Wyong and a close 26-22 loss last start to Newcastle.

In team news, Penrith welcome back Isaac John into the halves, which sees Will Smith move back to fullback and Tom Eisenhuth replacing the injured Nu’u Akeripa on the wing.

W

hen it comes to musical success things are certainly going well for Irish born s i n ge r/s o n g w r ite r Damien Leith. His one man cabaret play ‘The Parting Glass: An Irish Journey’ has gained such positive feedback that after its premiere four years ago the ‘Australian Idol’ alumni is once again hitting the road to bring the production to audiences across the country.

‘The Parting Glass: An Irish Journey’ originally came about after Damien was approached by Aussie singer and entertainer David Campbell, who was looking for shows to include in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

“He said ‘hey, would you like to put something together of an Irish nature for the Cabaret Festival’ and I just thought well it’s a great opportunity for me,” Damien said.

“I’ve always loved acting and I’ve always loved drama so I thought it would

be a great opportunity to sit down and write a play.”

Though the initial writing process was relatively easy, only taking Damien a total of four days from start to finish, its evolution to the play it is today has been a much longer journey.

“I’ve edited it, I’ve changed it, we’ve performed it quite a few times and I’ve made adjustments so to actually get it to where it is right now has taken quite a long time,” he said.

Local audiences will have a chance to see ‘The Parting Glass: An Irish Journey’ when it premieres at the Evan Theatre on Friday, June 19.

“It’s a very funny show but also very emotional as well because it is about a father and a son and they haven’t seen each other in years,” he said.

“It’s just been incredible hearing people laugh and seeing them cry, it’s kind of exactly what you want.”

After spending the last nine years doing around 100 shows a year, Damien decided that for the release of his new album, ‘Songs from Ireland’, he would avoid the typical album tour and instead give audiences a much broader experience of Irish

music by touring ‘The Parting Glass: An Irish Journey’.

“Rather than just coming out and playing the songs, we’ll play the songs but we’ll also create a scene and make people feel like they’re in Ireland for two hours,” he said.

“For those two hours hopefully they’ll feel like they’re actually sitting in an Irish pub.”

The new album features a collection of Irish music, including many of the songs

that feature in the show. The process of collating the tracks was an easy one for Damien, who decided to follow his gut instincts.

“I just went straight to songs that I just love rather than picking songs that I thought people would like,” he said.

Damien Leith will be performing at Evan Theatre on Friday, June 19 at 8pm.

t the recent Logie awards TV presenter Carrie Bickmore brought attention to brain cancer through her moving acceptance speech.

o close out their Home/Front exhibition the Penrith Regional Gallery will be playing host to the Uzunstein Chamber Orchestra for an afternoon of classical and contemporary chamber works.

The Home/Front exhibit commemorates 100 years since the Gallipoli campaign. The orchestra, directed by Giga Jeleskovic, will perform works inspired by the tragedy of war and the reality of the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers and nurses during the campaign.

The performance will be held in the main gallery and will include the piece ‘Once Our Comrades’, which was written especially for the 100 year Gallipoli remembrance.

The piece is based on war poetry by

Leon Gellert and 1915 diary entries from C Battalion, and attempts to portray the suffering and sadness of war.

The Uzunstein Chamber Orchestra mixes classical arrangements with Slavic melodies and Balkan rhythms through the beautiful sounds of the cello, violin, mandolin and guitar.

This will be a very special musical performance that is not to be missed.

There will be a new superhero show on TV soon with ‘Supergirl’ getting her own series. CBS in America has approved the project which will star Melissa Benoist (‘Glee’) as Kara Zor-El.

Kara was born on Krypton but has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin since arriving on Earth. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Ê More movements on the ‘Fuller House’ front of late with Dave Coulier (Joey Gladstone) and Lori Loughlin (Aunt Becky) confirmed for the premiere reunion episode. The only three originals yet to sign on, but presumably will are: Bob Saget (Danny Tanner) and the Olsen Twins (Michelle). Ê Nine has announced it will launch its controversial new dating series ‘Married at First Sight’ this Monday at 8.40pm . The show sees four couples meet for the very first time on their wedding day. The marriage technically won’t be a legal one, instead it’s more of a commitment ceremony – Nine probably won’t tell you that though. Ê Channel Ten will air the final ever episode of ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ this Thursday, May 21 at 10.30pm. he Museum of Fire will be offering motoring enthusiasts the chance to step back in time when they play host to the 5th Annual Sydney Classic and Antique Truck Show.

The event will feature classic buses, trucks, fire engines and vehicles from as early as the start of the 20th century.

It’s not just about the vehicles though, this fun family event will also feature a performance by tribute act the 3B’s, who will have the crowds entertained with music from The Bee Gees, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. There will also be performances by ventriloquist Darren

Carr, Penrith Harmony, Greg Weir and local group Tailgate.

Visitors will also have the chance to enjoy a range of rides, watch demonstrations by vintage dressed firefighters, check out historic police cars and go for a ride on the vintage double decker bus.

With rides and entertainment free after entry this is a fun and affordable day out for the whole family.

The 5th Annual Sydney Classic and Antique Truck Show will be held on Sunday, May 31 from 8am to 3pm. Adult tickets are $15 and include up to three children under 16 free with paying adult. Concession tickets are $10.

MUSIC Sol Invictus // KATE REID In 2009 Faith No More fans got their resurrection moment. Just over a decade after the band’s demise the Californian alternative rock/metal band led by the incomparable Mike Patton announced they would be reforming for a tour titled ‘The Second Coming’. Cue the collective sound of fans around the world asking “does this mean new music?”

Five long years later and the question has finally been answered, with the band releasing their new album ‘Sol Invictus’ this month.

It was never going to be an easy task. Though fans recognised that they probably wouldn’t be getting the same music they loved in the 90’s, there was definitely a thick air of hope.

After listening through a few times I can happily say that the hope didn’t go to waste, ‘Sol Invictus’ is a pretty damn great album.

As with all of Faith No More’s releases it’s a varied affair, this is no lazy one-song-repeated-ten-times album. It opens with the dark and brooding title track ‘Sol Invictus’ before moving on to ‘Superhero’, which is one of the more radio friendly releases from the album.

Highlights include ‘Separation Anxiety’ which features a foundation of chugging guitar over laced with Patton’s signature vocal play which rides like a rollercoaster through deep, dark depths to soaring heights.

‘Cone of Shame’ is a great example of classic Faith No More while ‘Matador’

is big, bold and – at the risk of sounding clichéd – epic!

It was never going to rival the best of the band’s back catalogue, but ‘Sol Invictus’ is a solid comeback.

Chloe (Brittany Snow) calls for 100 per cent commitment from the team but as seniors, thought of life after college is slowly leaving one Bella behind as she tries her luck in the real-life music industry.

A new romance begins which sees Fat

Amy have her very own solo, not without its humorous moments.

Witty one-liners come from acapella commentators Gail (Elizabeth Banks) and John (John Michael Higgins) to keep you laughing, with Australian Rebel Wilson playing her part as the comedic back-bone to the film.

The team attempt to find their sound again as they head out on the road to redemption.

A film with an ending that hits its high note, ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ is much like its predecessor in several ways but with fresh faces, new music, a new competitor in the mix and new and old relationships blossoming, it’s an entertaining movie.

e happily admit to a fondness for Merlot, an easy-drinking, food-friendly drop that today is the second-most consumed red in the world after Cabernet Sauvignon, with around 260,000ha (640,000 acres) planted to the variety globally.

And while it thrives in warmer regions it can do exceptionally well in cooler climates too, and where because it doesn’t ripen too quickly, it develops a beautiful softness along with lovely fruity varietal flavours. One such cool climate label we suggest is worth trying is from the boutique Banjo’s Run at tiny Exeter in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Their 2013 is medium bodied with nicely recognisable Merlot red berry and blackcurrant fruit flavours, and with its suggestions of spicy tannin makes for a great match with Italian tomato-based pastas, herbed chicken or osso bucco.

One also contains shelves of skulls of former monks, while another became the richest after the Serbian Emperor, Symeon Uron gave all his wealth to the monastery to become an impoverished monk there.

And in more recent times yet another, Agia Triada also known as the Holy Trinity Monastery, was used for scenes in the James Bond movie, ‘For Your Eyes Only’.

W

hen a scattering of nomadic 9th century Greek monks, who lived out their lives in solitude in remote caves 350km north-west of Athens, found themselves facing growing threats from marauding Turkish invaders, they decided that their safety could, in fact, be in numbers.

So they moved to the base of one of numerous strange sandstone pinnacles that reached 500 metres or more above the surrounding Plain of Thessaly, and while continuing their individual lives of solitude within caves there, came together on Sundays and major important religious dates to jointly worship and pray.

And ultimately they built a small chapel amongst the rocks for these gatherings, but when that too was plundered and many of its precious art works the monks had created were stolen, the monks started climbing higher into the fissures of their pinnacles until in the 11th century they had reached the tops of some twenty or more.

There they used an elaborate system of retractable ladders and baskets on the ends of long ropes to haul building materials and other supplies, and even themselves and hired workers and pilgrims up to their retreats, and to spend the next 300 years constructing individual monasteries overlooking the surrounding plain.

Modern-day scholars say that these Meteora Monasteries as they are known, Meteora meaning literally “suspended in

How does fitness feature in your life?

When I first came to Australia in 1981 I was working in an office sitting most of the day and I started thinking about doing some exercise to keep me fit. It was the time when aerobics was in full swing so I started going after work with some others to a local gym. I enjoyed that but would have periods of not going and then

starting up again. Then I got into netball, never having played before and I was in my 40s so I played night comp in the mums’ team. I’ve been doing yoga on and off for the last 10 years and two years ago I had a scan for osteoporosis and found out I was borderline according to my doc.

I think the biggest benefit for me is that I feel content with my life. After training I always feel so well, my body feels alive, I have a feeling of pride in my achievements, stuff I thought I’d never be able to do, I’ve done! I’ve lifted weights that have made my body strain with the intensity, I’ve thought it out, I’ve done it and controlled it. That makes me feel wonderful.

You may have heard the new saying ‘sitting is the new smoking’. Well I guess some light exercise is the new quitting. And it doesn’t take much at all. Trading just two minutes of sitting for walking can help you live longer, scientists claim.

Getting motivated for just two minutes every hour otherwise spent laying on a sofa or remaining stuck behind a desk reduced the risk of dying by a third, a US study found. For people with chronic kidney disease, the swap was even more effective, lowering mortality by

Standing instead of sitting for two minutes every hour produced no benefit. But trading sitting time for ‘light activity’, such as casual walking or housework, had a significant impact.

“It was fascinating to see the results because the current national focus is on moderate or vigorous activity,” said lead scientist Professor Srinivasan Beddhu, from the University of Utah.

“To see that light activity had an association with lower mortality is intriguing.

“Based on these results we would recommend adding two minutes of walking each hour in combination with normal activities, which should include 2.5 hours of moderate exercise each week.

“Moderate exercise strengthened the heart, muscles and bones and conferred health benefits that cannot be obtained by walking alone.”

The researchers analysed data from 3243 participants in a US health and lifestyle study, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, who wore movement-sensing devices to measure their activity levels.

A total of 137 deaths were recorded in the three years after the data was collected.

Animals love to explore and you can encourage exploratory play by hiding food throughout the environment.

It is also important that you engage in regular activities with your dog to provide

social, physical and mental enrichment. Dogs also thrive on routine and will generally look forward to their daily walk, run or ball/frisbee game.

High energy dogs and working breeds may need more strenuous exercise to keep them interested; this may involve exercise such as flyball, agility training or swimming.

Tug games can also be fun and will allow your dog to burn lots of energy. It is important that toys are durable and designed for tugging games. Train your dog to release the toy by offering more desirable treats or another toy as a reward during play.

Be sure that your pet shows no signs of aggression when playing tug games. If your dog becomes possessive or aggressive during tug games, immediately stop tug games and contact your vet.

Even if your dog has sufficient exercise, play and toys, it may still explore and chew household items. Make sure that desirable objects such as shoes and socks are kept away from dogs when they are unsupervised. If you catch your dog chewing on something inappropriate, make a gentle sound to distract your dog and give it an alternative toy to chew on; this rewards your dog for releasing the inappropriate item and allows it to chew on an appropriate toy.

The Bible’s book of Psalms picks up on this idea of direction when the writer, speaking of God, says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

The writer continues in a prayer to God calling on Him to “Direct my footsteps according to your word.”

As the Psalm unfolds we see how the writer “rejoiced” in following God’s word.

He found God’s word “strengthened him and kept him from deceitful ways and worthless things”.

He found that knowing God through his word gave him “discernment and hope”.

It is the word of God which teaches us the value of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control – these are wonderful qualities that will make a difference to your life, and it is as you get to know Jesus and follow him that you see these qualities lived out to the full.

ambridge Park resident and accomplished youth basketball coach Curtis Sardi is now the new coach of the Penrith Panthers Waratah Championship League women’s side following the shock resignation of head coach Chris Jones.

Mystery still surrounds Jones’ sudden departure which now sees his 24-yearold assistant in Sardi as the new man in charge.

The Panthers have been enjoying a

strong season to date, currently sitting in fourth position with five wins and three losses.

Up until last week’s loss to the Sydney Comets, Penrith were sitting in as high as second place.

Speaking with the Weekender, Sardi said it will be an interesting learning experience going from assistant coach to head coach in an instant.

“Because I’ve never coached seniors before, I’m learning each game,” he admitted.

“I’ve coached two U16 state teams, NSW Metro the last couple of years and I’ve

coached Penrith’s U14 and U16 for about six years. This is different. It’s a lot different.”

While it may be a steep learning curve for Sardi to begin with, he’s fortunately inherited an excellent side made up of predominantly Penrith juniors.

Led by Australian representative Tahlia Tupaea, Penrith’s juniors are some of the best in the state, according to Sardi.

“All our girls, apart from Alicia Poto, have come through the Penrith system, which the Association is very proud of,” he said.

“All the girls have played for Penrith throughout the junior and youth league

years. Most of the girls have also represented their state or been very close to doing so.”

Penrith will return to action this weekend when they play in their first doubleheader of the season.

The Panthers will take on the top of the table Norths Bears on Saturday evening followed by the Hornsby Spiders on Sunday afternoon at Penrith Sports Stadium.

“We haven’t played Norths yet, so we really don’t know too much about them.

We’ll just have to have a plan and see how we go,” Sardi said.

OLL 101 will hold a major fundraising event next Saturday, May 23 at Penrith Paceway to raise money for local man Chad Graham.

ROLL 101 is a charity-based trust set up by Mr Graham and his supporters to provide assistance to young people affected by chronic or terminal illness or by catastrophic injuries.

In 2007, Mr Graham was living life as a very talented motocross rider before he was involved in a serious accident whilst riding at Bringelly.

The accident resulted in a dislocated neck, leaving this once healthy and active young man a C5/C6 incomplete quadriplegic.

Once Mr Graham returned home from rehab, he went back to school and finished his HSC. He then completed a business management traineeship, obtained his driver’s licence and scored himself work at a local motorcycle shop.

During this time, Mr Graham enjoyed a renewed enthusiasm for sport while, at the same time, regularly conducting motivational talks at the Royal Rehabilita-

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu has branded his side’s performance over the weekend the “worst of the year” after they were pummelled 86-3 by Warringah last Saturday.

It was never going to be an easy contest for the battling Emus up against one of the competition’s top sides, but no one at Pittwater Rugby Park on Saturday saw an 83 point ambush coming.

Speaking with the Weekender, Tu’ipulotu was lost for words when trying to explain what happened to his side last weekend.

“The boys… didn’t follow the game plan… played their own agenda and that’s what happened,” he admitted.

“It was a shocking round for me.”

Tu’ipulotu stopped short of praising Warringah for their performance and seemed at a loss as to what to do next.

“Warringah were a bit like West Harbour last week, they weren’t good but we were worse again,” he said.

“I’m trying as hard as I can to motivate these guys and get something out of them but it’s just not happening.”

The Two Blues are the only other team in the Shute Shield competition yet to record a win and, like the Emus, will be desperate to do so this weekend.

“Parramatta are in the same boat as us,” Tu’ipulotu said.

“They’ll be out to prove a point that they are still the number one team out west. For us to get on the right page and make amends, it would be nice to win this weekend.”

This Saturday’s fixture at Nepean Rugby Park will also celebrate the Emus’ annual ‘Back to Penrith Day’, which this year also recognises the club’s 50th anniversary.

Starting at 10am, Back to Penrith Day will see players and supporters from years gone by return to reminisce about old times.

THE Greater Western Sydney Giants have confirmed that defender Tim Mohr has re-ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The injury occurred when Mohr was playing for the UWS Giants in the NEAFL last Saturday at Spotless Stadium, his sixth match back from injury.

Penrith’s biggest winner was the experienced Sandy Cameron who rode in two classes including the traditional BMX format (20 inch) and the Cruiser class (24 inch).

Cameron managed to finish first in Australia in the cruiser class while she picked up a more than respectable third place in the traditional BMX format.

Fellow local Declan Jaehne also had a big weekend, finishing second in Australia for U14 boys and first in the country in the National Champbik competition.

His brother Kyle also performed well, coming home in seventh for U16 boys and fourth in the National Champbik.

Declan will now compete in New Zealand in October as part of the Senior National Test Team.

Young Sonny Lucas made it all the way through to the final in the 8-10 boys category, finishing fifth in the country while Frankie Lucas (5-7 girls)

One of the major challenges of the competition was the extreme weather which caused torrential rain and made racing very difficult and visibility extremely low.

THE Penrith Panthers v Manly Sea Eagles Holden Cup match won’t be played at Brookvale Oval on Monday as problems with the stadium’s surface continue. The Sea Eagles played Newcastle at Brookvale last Sunday but there remains concerns about the ground heading into Monday night’s clash against the Panthers. The Holden Cup match will now be played at St Marys Stadium on Saturday.

wo local cricket players are heading to Sri Lanka next month to experience the sights, sounds and just about everything the tiny subcontinent nation has to offer.

17-year-old Mikayla Hinkley and 21-yearold Naomi Stalenberg will join 11 of the state’s best young players as part of the Cricket NSW Female Development squad who will fly to Colombo in June to play T20 and 50-over matches against local Sri Lankan teams.

The 10 day tour aims to develop athletes with limited international touring experience and will see them play cricket in conditions they may not have experienced before.

“This will be my first time overseas, so it’s very exciting,” Hinkley said.

“I can’t wait to experience Sri Lanka’s culture and the way they embrace and play the game.

“It’s going to be stinking hot, the humidity is going to be crazy.”

No stranger to playing overseas, having previously played in the Netherlands and New Zealand, Stalenberg will be one of the more experienced players heading over.

“I’m looking forward to being a role model to the younger girls by teaching them a bit more about the game,” the allrounder said.

She said she can’t wait to experience the culture of a country such as the cricketmad Sri Lanka.

“It’s going to be really fun to see what Sri Lanka has to offer, like the atmosphere and playing conditions, and it will be cool to see how we go over there against some of those sides,” she said.

Both Hinkley and Stalenberg play in Penrith Cricket Club’s first grade women’s team and are also best friends off the pitch.

“Having my best friend there will be the ultimate way to experience overseas for the first time,” Hinkley said.

“It’s going to be really cool to go over with someone like her,” Stalenberg added.

The squad will be under the guidance of NSW Breakers assistant coach Ben Sawyer as well as former Breakers player and Cricket NSW Female Pathways Manager Leah Poulton.

“The tour will give the squad an idea of what to expect from an overseas tour as well as give them some invaluable match experience in both T20 and 50-over formats,” Poulton said.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side have continued their losing streak, going down to the Sydney Comets 83-65.

Ben Kearins was Penrith’s best scoring 17 points and five assists.

Despite the loss, Penrith remain in the top six and will take on the Norths Bears and Hornsby Spiders this weekend.

The Rams and Bombers were tied at 52-all going into the final term before the Bombers took care of business in the fourth.

Best on ground for the Rams were Josh Shephard and Max McNamara who both scored two goals apiece.

Penrith now sit in fifth and will take on the Blacktown Magic this Saturday afternoon at Greygums Oval.

BASKETBALL: Penrith’s women’s team were also defeated by the Sydney Comets last weekend 80-64.

AFL: The Penrith Ramettes women’s AFL team have scored a huge victory in their opening game of the season, hammering UNSW/ES Stingrays 65-4.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms have moved up a place in the Division 1 NSW Ice Hockey standings following a 4-3 come from behind win over Newcastle.

The Phantoms were down 2-3 late in the game but managed to score two quick goals to earn their second victory of the season.

Penrith will return home this Sunday to take on the third-placed Norwest Emperors.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have had the fourth quarter from hell, going down to the North Shore Bombers 85-58 in last weekend’s AFL Sydney Division 2 match-up.

NETBALL: Australia Post and Netball Australia are calling on western Sydney netball clubs, associations and their communities to nominate their local inclusion champions for the Australia Post One Netball Community Awards, which opened this week.

Now in their second year, the awards recognise and reward the individuals, clubs and associations that go above and beyond to create and support inclusive netball environments. They include the coaches, umpires, parents and committee members who work behind the scenes to ensure everyone, regardless of their background or ability, is welcome in netball.

Up to eight winners will be chosen to receive prize packs worth more than $1000.

he Western Sydney Wanderers have thrown their support behind coach Tony Popovic by extending his contract until the end of the 2018 season.

Popovic was in huge demand following Western Sydney’s famous AFC Champions League title last November with many commentators expecting him to leave the club and take his talents abroad.

But even after an A-League season from hell, the 41-year-old has decided to remain in western Sydney to get his side back on track.

“I am immensely proud of the achievements of this team at our club to date but have no interest in resting with past glories,” Popovic said when announcing his new deal last week.

“Work for next season has already begun and our aim is to get back to the top where we belong.

“This season we had some adversity and that can destroy you or make you stronger – everyone will see a stronger Wanderers next season.”

Wanderers Chairman Paul Lederer said he was confident Popovic was the man to turn the club’s fortunes around.
