enrith families will feel the squeeze after the Federal Government handed down one of its toughest and tightest Budgets to date – described by Lindsay Liberal candidate Fiona Scott as one of “chaos”. With an expected deficit this fi nancial year of over $19 billion and a deficit of $18 billion in 2013-14, the Federal Government has controversially targeted a number of family payments and benefits in its savings measures. “No government gets to choose the global economic circumstances in which the Budget is
framed. But you do get to choose the priorities for the nation,” said Treasurer Wayne Swan in his sixth Budget speech. Scrapped is the Baby Bonus, a $5,000 payout to help low income parents handle the costs of having their fi rst child. The payment will be axed from March 1, 2014, with a lesser payment of $2,000 to be factored into Family Tax Benefit Part A payments to eligible recipients the year after their fi rst child is born. Other measures that will impact over 13,000 Lindsay residents who claim Family Tax Benefit Part A include; changes to eligibility for children aged 16-years and not in school; the axing of additional payments (an extra $300 for families
with one child and $600 extra with two or more children) outlined in last year’s Budget in the 'Spreading the Benefits of the Boom' package; and structural changes to Child Care Assistance. These changes to family payments will save the Federal Government $3.16 billion over five years. Emu Plains single mother, Louise Piltz, is studying to become a teacher whilst supporting 10-year-old son Cameron. “The Budget is just more cut backs, there really isn’t much support for families and especially single parents,” she said.
