RAPIST OFF THE STREETS

found guilty of 16 charges related to sexual offending during a trial last year.

In 2021, he was formally charged with grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, attempting to commit aggravated sexual assault, two counts of aggravated sexual assault in company, three counts of aggravated sexual touching and nine counts of sexually assaulting a victim with a cognitive

impairment. A graphic set of facts read out to the court detailed the abuse that Markham inflicted on his three victims, which included a teenager who had a cognitive impairment.

The court heard the offending took place from April 2020 to January 2021 in Villawood and other parts of western Sydney, not long after he was released on parole for offending of a similar nature.

One of the victims, a 16-year-old, was physically and sexually abused by Markham on a number of occasions.

The court heard that he sometimes used rope to tie her arms and legs together, put duct tape over her mouth and told her “police aren’t going to help you”.

SEXUAL OFFENDER JAILED UNTIL 2040

Twice, Markham took the teen to his friend’s apartment, who was in his 70s, and threatened to hurt her if she did not have a threesome with them.

The court told the court that another victim, a 25-year-old man at the time, who saw Markham as a “father figure”, was subjected to painful, unprotected and non-consensual sex with him.

The third victim, who was a child at the time, was groomed by Markham who repeatedly asked sexual questions, bought them gifts and exposed them to indecent material.

Markham also told the victim that he could influence the police because he was a private investigator.

In sentencing, Judge Huw Baker noted that Markham had a cognitive impairment which bordered on an intellectual disability and a disadvantaged upbringing but said these factors did not mitigate the seriousness of the offending.

He also said that Markham has shown no remorse, lacks insight and has poor prospects of rehabilitation.

Judge Baker told the court that Markham had committed “very serious” offences which took place “over a significant period of time” has had “profound and long lasting impacts on the victims and their lives”.

“He is a recidivist who has engaged in predatory behaviour for more than 20 years,” he said.

Markham was sentenced to an aggregate term of 19 years and four months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 14 years and six months. He will be eligible for release in 2035. His maximum term expires in 2040.

New food outlets confirmed as part of Glenmore Village

Plans for two new restaurants at the under-construction Glenmore Village development in Glenmore Park have been approved by Penrith City Council.

A Development Application (DA) submitted last year proposed the addition of the restaurants – a cafe/restaurant and a fast food outlet with drivethrough facilities.

It’s not yet known which eateries will take up the vacant outlets.

“The end users for these tenancies are yet to be determined however a food and beverage offering is considered the most appropriate use of this prominent corner of the site as compared to the prior concepts for the car wash on this corner that was removed from the parent DA for the site,” the Statement of Environmental Effects attached to the DA said.

The plan will remove a total of 15 car parking spaces initially proposed as part of the develop-

ment, resulting in a total of 202 commercial car parking spaces in the ground floor car parking area. The basement car parking area, including 146 commercial car parking spaces, is unchanged as part of this proposed modification.

Glenmore Village will be a mixed-use development, encompassing 8,300sqm of retail and

commercial floor space, with 145 luxury residential apartments above the ground-floor centre.

The approval of the new restaurants also included approval for a signage pylon for the site that is approximately 10 metres high that will identify the Glenmore Village Local Centre that will accommodate some key tenant signage zones.

Saturday 10 June, 9am-3.30pm

The proposal also nominates some signage areas sitting above the awning elements of the tenancies however any future detail will be subject to a separate application. Construction on Glenmore Village started more than a year ago. A Woolworths Metro store will be the anchor tenant of the development.

Driver in fatal crash streaming Netflix moments before disaster

The P-plater charged over a collision that killed a beloved school teacher was streaming a show on Netflix, a court has heard.

Bailey Camilleri, 22, of Shanes Park, appeared at Penrith District Court for a judge alone hearing after previously pleading guilty to ‘dangerous driving occasioning death’.

On the morning of November 2,

2021, his truck collided with a car on The Northern Road, near Spinks Road, in Llandilo, killing 28-yearold Gemma Thompson.

A tense courtroom heard Camilleri was sleep deprived and streaming an episode of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ from his phone at the time of the crash.

Thompson died at the scene.

The court heard the various factors in determining the dangerousness of Camilleri’s driving before the crash were tiredness, phone use, general inattention and tailgating.

A set of agreed facts read out to the court revealed that Camilleri connected his phone to the Bluetooth speaker in his truck before he left work at 7.11am. For the next 11 minutes, leading up to the collision, his phone was unlocked with Netflix open streaming an episode of the TV sitcom.

A defence lawyer argued that the Crown must prove Camilleri was distracted by his phone at the time of the deadly crash.

“There is no evidence that he had touched his phone for at least 10 minutes before the collision,” he said.

Of the five witnesses who were called to give evidence, two told the court that they noticed that Camilleri was tailgating their vehicles before the crash.

One told the court that Camilleri was driving so closely behind that she felt “uncomfortable” and pulled over to let him pass.

The witnesses also described “periods of inattention”, telling the court that Camilleri was drifting and wandering in his lane.

The defence lawyer argued that drifting left and right is consistent

with tiredness and that Camilleri had not been sleeping well in the days prior.

In Camilleri’s immediate version of events, he told six people, including two police officers, that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel and was responsible for an innocent person’s death.

“I don’t care about me, just let me die… I just fell asleep and I killed someone… I’m going to jail,” he said. A video of Camilleri’s interview with police, which was recorded on November 15, was played in court.

He was asked a series of questions about what happened to which he responded: “I was the driver but I don’t remember anything from that morning”.

“ I just can’t remember…it’s blank… that whole morning’s a blur,” he said.

An officer attached to the NSW Police Crash Investigation Unit, who gave evidence on the second day of the hearing, told the court it is illegal to stream videos that are in the driver’s view.

The hearing continues with sentencing expected soon.

Is Grant criticism really a race issue?

Talking about racism is always a tricky task, especially when you’re a white bloke who’s never been a victim of it.

But I’m going to try to unpack, in the best way that I can, Stan Grant’s stunning exit from the ABC, albeit possibly temporary.

Grant presented his final ‘Q&A’ program for the foreseeable future on Monday night.

The fact he was allowed to host the program after launching such a stinging attack on his employer last Friday was extraordinary in itself, but that may be part of the bigger problem at the ABC.

All of this came to a head after Grant’s appearance on the ABC’s Coronation coverage, which was widely criticised not just by other sections of the media but the wider public as well.

The fact the ABC thought it needed almost an “anti-Monarch” voice points to desperation at the network as it lurches further and further into the woke agenda and further away from the everyday Australians it is there to serve, and the balance it owes its audience.

The reality is the ABC gave Grant a platform to trash the Monarchy on one of its biggest nights in history, and Grant is unhappy it didn’t go down well.

I’m not convinced all of the criticism about Grant’s appearance or comments that night are about race. Much of the response would have happened no matter who was dropping bombs on the King’s Coronation.

That is not to suggest Grant has not been subjected to racism.

And while racism hits differently, vile abuse is an unfortunate reality of a profile that most journalists experience every day.

Just ask Grant’s ABC colleague Lisa Millar, who was subjected to horrible commentary on Twitter, repeated by other sectors of the media, simply for what she wore on TV one morning.

Women right across the media deal with this tripe every day.

No matter what they say, they are objected to vile abuse on social media about their appearance, what they choose to wear or

Men experience it too, probably at lower levels, but they’d only have to share their inbox or private messages with you to show the kind of abuse journalists of all kind are subjected to, largely from keyboard warriors who have too much time on their hands.

Even your humble newspaper editor cops it.

A little while ago, I received a handwritten letter telling me my dead grandmother would be ashamed of me over a column I wrote.

Every other day I receive some sort of negative communication, often referencing things that have nothing to do with what I may have written.

My point here is not to say that racism doesn’t sting on another level; just that everyone with a profile deals with criticism levelled at them with very little respect or grace.

Whether Grant was subjected to such criticism because of his race is questionable.

Australia does have a racism issue, that I am not denying.

Much of it is casual racism that I honestly believe generational change is shifting.

Some of it is, however, embedded in our culture and is much harder to change.

But Australia has a far bigger problem with bullying than it does with racism.

The social media sewer is evidence of that, while certain media outlets play a part too in driving their readership towards anger and fiery response with clickbait-driven stories that often have zero editorial responsibility or credibility attached.

And there’s another media issue at play too: the trend of more and more opinion pieces, which blur the lines between journalists and presenters and those employed to give their opinions.

The ABC is definitely guilty of this; and the public often doesn’t know how to feel about it. Why is someone who I believed to be impartial and with journalistic credibility shoving their opinion down my throat?

Grant is right to call out racism.

It’s not my place to tell Grant how to feel or how he should respond to such abuse, and it’s not my intention to play a game of victim blaming here.

But there is no doubt that ‘Q&A’, once compulsive Monday night viewing, now feels like a platform for Grant to push an agenda. At times, it has felt like an ego-driven power trip.

Grant has used his platform at the ABC to have uncomfortable conversations and is now, rightly or wrongly, dealing with the fallout and consequences of those conversations.

And the ABC hasn’t noticed because it fits in with their current operation.

This is a broadcaster more obsessed with incorporating Indigenous place names into everything it presents than it is finding balance in its news coverage.

When all is said and done with The Voice referendum, the ABC will struggle to prove it offered a balanced perspective.

There is a feeling that the ABC is desperately plunging certain views down our throats, telling us who to respect, what to think, and when to do it.

So when Stan Grant does it on a personal level, nobody at the ABC really notices and the response comes as a shock.

The ABC this week announced a review into how it handles racism. Hopefully it will review all other forms of bullying its journalists are subjected to as well.

As for Stan Grant, let’s hope he’s not lost to the Australian media forever. He’s an experienced and competent broadcaster.

But perhaps a break is just what everyone needs; both Stan and his audience.

Pubs told to dump VIP Lounge signage or face huge penalties

Pubs and clubs won’t be allowed to attract punters using ‘VIP Lounge’ signage from September after the State Government moved to close a long-running loophole.

Venues have used the term for many years after specifically advertising poker machines was banned. It is prominent outside pubs across the Penrith Local Government Area.

From September 1, names such as VIP Room/VIP Lounge, Golden Room/Lounge, Players’ Room/ Lounge and Prosperity Room/ Lounge will be among names banned as well as images of dragons, coins or lightning motifs.

The expectations for removal of signs will be applied in a staged manner, to afford venues the time to remove, switch off, conceal or otherwise change both static and electronic signage.

“The façades of pubs and clubs across the state are littered with signs such as ‘VIP lounge’ to alert those walking or driving by that

they have gaming machines,” said Gaming and Racing Minister David Harris.

“Some of these signs are extremely prominent, can be seen by children

and members of the community who are at risk of gambling harm.

“While there are already laws in place that prohibit gaming related signage, venue operators have

circumvented these by advertising ‘VIP Lounges’.

“We are putting an end to this loophole for the health and wellbeing of our communities.”

Pubs and clubs have been formally notified this week that all external gambling-related signs, including fixed unilluminated awning signs to digital video displays, will need to be removed, altered, or concealed before September 1.

Where venues can demonstrate delays in removing their signage that are outside of their control, they will be afforded a further three months to comply. Following this period, a zero-tolerance approach will be adopted.

The maximum penalty attributable for those who fail to remove their signs and breach the Act is 100 penalty units, or $11,000, per offence.

Premier Chris Minns took the policy around the signage to the election in March, along with a raft of other measures including banning clubs with pokies from donating to NSW political parties. The government will also soon implement a trial of cashless poker machines, but won’t go as far as implementing a widespread cashless card for all machines, that had been mooted by the previous government.

Passion, politics and Prue:

Prue Car has been fighting for her community in opposition for years but now that her beloved Labor is in power, and she is the Deputy Premier of NSW, she is not taking anything for granted.

The Londonderry MP, Minister for Education and Early Learning, and Minister for Western Sydney believes she has enough passion to cover all her portfolios and get the job done.

Speaking to the Weekender, Car said being on the other side of politics is a “completely different” experience that she is embracing.

“It’s completely different but it’s been a really exciting opportunity to already start the ball rolling on things that the community needs locally such as Jordan Springs High School as I am a local member first and foremost,” Car said.

“People have waited a long time for things, and we have had to fight previous governments for things, so I just feel like I don’t want to waste a second to get the things done that we need done for our area, as well as the rest of the state.”

Saying she feels like she might be “drinking from a fire hose” at times, Car is ready to tackle the list of issues that played a part in getting a fresh Minns Labor Government elected, including education and front-line services.

“When I started I felt like politics could be a way to make people’s lives better and easier and fairer and I still believe that is the case, and I think we’ve been able to do things

“We’ve made a few pretty important steps, but this is going to be a long-term project for the government and people voted for us to do it, so we have to do it, we are motivated to do it and to be honest it is an honour to try to fix this.”

Working on it while managing a blended family with her fiancé, Car, who was once a single mother, said she is just like most families juggling work and life, and she hopes to be an example to encourage women in politics.

“It is pretty challenging being a single mum and I’m fortunate to not be in that position anymore. A lot of people do it and it certainly teaches you how to time manage.”

A major task for the government will be managing the state’s money for different projects including Penrith Stadium and western Sydney remains a priority for Car and her team.

Diggers club pitches upgrade

St Marys Diggers Club is planning an $8 million upgrade that will deliver new facilities for members and guests including new outdoor garden dining.

The Mamre Road club has submitted a Development Application to Penrith City Council, seeking to undertake a range of improvements to the club, which has been on its current site since at least 1982.

The proposal aims to upgrade the main function space available to public groups, clubs and associations and provide a new food and beverage extension to the north-west of the club with indoor and outdoor components. There would also be a new Bowler’s Clubhouse

to the north-east of the club, while the Development Application proposes the enclosing of the club’s existing cafe terrace to the southwest and partial enclosing of the club’s eastern terrace that faces Mamre Road.

Minor internal alterations to the club lounges and a relocation of a greenkeeper’s shed are also part of the plans.

“The proposal will have no impact on the views and visual privacy of neighbouring properties,” a Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) attached to the application states.

Community board to help guide future of historic Fernhill Estate

Fernhill Estate community trustee board Chair, Shari Driver, said it’s wonderful to have Fernhill Estate in public ownership.

Anew community trustee board has been established to help guide the future of the historic Fernhill Estate at Mulgoa.

The board is made up of seven members of the local community with a diverse range of experience including Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen.

Their role is to advise Greater Sydney Parklands on a broad range of community interests and perspectives on park stewardship, activities and usage plus environmental and cultural heritage at Fernhill Estate.

This includes providing regular community input on the delivery of Fernhill Estate’s Landscape Master Plan to 2026, which was released in February.

Alongside Hitchen, the board features Peter Harvey, Robert Bennett, Shari Driver, Nicholas Leech, Poonam Naik and Cindy Laws.

Greater Sydney Parklands Trust Chair, Michael Rose, said it was great to have the board in place.

“The great thing about our community trustee boards is that their members represent a diversity of community views and experiences,” he said.

“People enjoy parks in different ways and we want to make sure we understand and

plan for those differences. At Fernhill Estate, we are lucky to have a group that know the Estate and value its history, its landscape and its potential. They are giving their time to help

inform the way in which Fernhill Estate might best serve the different communities that visit it – not just now, but also in the decades ahead.”

“Fernhill Estate has an amazing mix of untouched bushland, rural spaces and astounding views. A secret jewel protected from development for the enjoyment of people visiting and living in western Sydney,” she said.

“I feel honoured to be the first community trustee board chair. The members bring lots of local knowledge and a really good mix of skills and experience. The board has the benefit of people local to the area with experience in planning, heritage, indigenous culture, parks and wildlife, marketing, local history, conservation, community development and education.

“I see us as collective custodians to help guide the emergence of Fernhill Estate as an amazing heritage, social and learning experience. It’s such an opportunity for connecting both existing and emerging communities across western Sydney.”

Driver said it would take time for Greater Sydney Parklands to carefully plan the site. “The community will continue be consulted about the future. The community trustee board will be there to nurture the nature outcomes, guide the gardens and influence the outcomes. The best is yet to come!” she said.

Community trustee board members Peter Harvey, Robert Bennett, Shari Driver, Nicholas Leech and Poonam Naik.

Historic contest earns revival

Ava gets the chop for charity

After growing out her hair for three years, eight-year-old Ava Fowler has gotten the big chop, making a sizeable donation to Wigs 4 Kids.

For Ava, the idea to cut and donate her hair came about when watching a YouTube video, though this was only heightened when she found out that members of her family and teachers at her school had been touched by cancer.

“When she was six, she was watching YouTube Kids, and she saw a little girl donate her hair for wigs, which then made her want to do it,” said her Mum, Jessica Fowler.

“More recently, my Mum became unwell with breast cancer last year, and then we’ve had a friend whose son has just been diag

“She saw the video and thought it was a nice thing to do for people, but in the last 18 months it’s become a bit more personal for her.”

As Ava’s hair grew, so did her excitement to cut it – partially because she’d be making a difference in the lives of children with cancer, and partially because the length was a little hard to manage.

On Saturday, May 20, Ava got her hair cut in front of all her friends and family, resulting in a rollercoaster of emotions for all involved.

“I wasn’t really nervous to cut it, I was happy because my hair was annoying me a lot!” Ava said.

“It was a bit scary doing it with everyone watching me, but once it was cut off, I felt free.”

Alocal tradition from yesteryear is making a comeback with the Penrith Show Young Woman Competition, originally known as the Miss Showgirl Competition, back on the calendar for the first time since the 1990s.

Steeped in history, The Sydney Royal Miss Showgirl Competition, as it was formerly known, was first held in 1962. In 1979, the competition’s name was changed to The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition, and in 2022, The Sydney Royal Ag Show’s NSW Young Woman officially replaced it, In order to go on to represent the Penrith Local Government Area at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, local young women compete to represent The Penrith Show Society at the Zone Competition level.

Vonnie Willis was Penrith’s first ever Miss

Showgirl in 1968. The competition’s idea – to involve, inspire, and empower young women to assume leadership roles in their communities – remains relevant today even though it is more than six decades old.

While Penrith has continued to send representatives to compete at Zone level, including Lucinda Harvey last year, the showgirl competition itself hasn’t run for several decades.

That changes this weekend with the Penrith Show Young Woman 2023 Presentation Dinner to be held at the Penrith Paceway. Through networking and the chance to meet other young leaders locally and from other parts of the state, the Penrith Show Young Woman Competition aims to empower young women to make a difference in the wider community.

Going back to school on Monday, Ava said that her friends and teachers had plenty of opinions about her hair. But, she’s happy to know that she’s inspiring a few to follow in her footsteps.

“Everyone was really surprised, and now my friend wants to cut her hair short, and my sister, but she doesn’t have enough hair yet,” she said.

Already, Ava’s efforts have garnered just under $3000 in donations, which will allow Kids with Cancer Foundation to continue financially supporting families that have a child with cancer.

Noting that the cause is one so close to her heart, Mum Jessica said she couldn’t be more proud of Ava’s commitment, and how much she cared about those she’s helping.

“We’re really proud of her, because it’s something she’s wanted to do. We haven’t pushed her at all,” she said.

Police Snapshot Legal Matters

Jamisontown: Man charged after exposing himself to in pet shop

A man has been charged with ‘wilful and obscene exposure’ after he exposed his genitals to shoppers in Jamisontown.

About 2.40 pm on Friday, May 5, the 47-yearold entered a Pet Shop on Mulgoa Road.

It is alleged at the time of entering the store, his penis and testicles had been placed over the waistband of his pants, exposing his genitals to shoppers and staff.

He allegedly walked around the store and to the counter, lifting his arm to pay for items, and staff at the location could clearly see the man’s genitals.

The man was told to leave but he allegedly asked if he could complete his purchase which was refused.

The entire incident was captured on good quality CCTV and police were informed. Investigations commenced and on Monday, May 15, police attended the man’s place of work.

They had a conversation with the Penrith man and arrested him before questioning him over the incident.

He was charged and will appear before Penrith Local Court at a later date.

Kingswood: Man’s wrong turn catches attention of police

A man has been charged after being caught high-range drink driving in Kingswood last weekend.

About 7.10pm on Friday, May 19, police were stopped at the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Bringelly Road in Kingswood when they noticed a vehicle in the right turn lane.

As the traffic lights turned green, the right turn arrow was red, but the vehicle next to the police turned against the red light, narrowly missing a man on a push bike.

Police stopped the vehicle and had a conversation with the 46-year-old driver before submitting him to a breath test, that proved positive.

The man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.297.

He was charged with ‘drive with high range PCA’ and issued an infringement for disobeying a traffic control signal.

The man was also issued a licence suspension notification.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Friday, June 9.

Penrith: Man charged with assaulting police after bizarre traffic incident

A man has been charged after assaulting a police officer in Penrith.

About 8.15am on Saturday, May 20, Police officers were stopped at the traffic lights on Parker Street when they saw a 29-year-old Werrington man approach a man riding a motorbike that was also stopped at the traffic lights.

It is alleged the man attempted to remove the rider from the bike.

He then walked to a truck stopped directly behind the motorbike and unsuccessfully tried to open the door.

Police got out of their vehicle and approached the man who was hostile, belligerent and swearing profusely.

It is alleged police had to physically remove him from the middle of the road, where traffic was attempting to pass.

They then asked the man, who smelt strongly of alcohol, to sit on the ground and he refused.

It is alleged the man grabbed hold of one of the officers and would not let go until another officer intervened and pulled him away.

The man was arrested and charged with ‘assault police officer in execution of duty, without actual bodily harm’.

He was scheduled to appear before Penrith Local Court on Thursday, May 25.

Llandilo: Police stop results in drug discovery in vehicle

A man has been charged by police after he was busted with cannabis in Llandilo earlier this week.

About 2.05am on Monday, May 22, police were patrolling Third Avenue when they stopped a vehicle for the purpose of a random breath test.

Police spoke with the 21-year-old driver and he was subjected to a breath test that proved negative.

It is alleged that police officers could smell cannabis whilst speaking with the man and checked the two passengers before they were all removed and the vehicle was the subject of a search.

In the rear pocket seat behind the driver, Police allegedly located a resealable bag containing cannabis.

The Werrington County man allegedly admitted that the cannabis was his, and he was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Friday, May 30.

Gathering and distributing the assets of a deceased estate and paying any estate liabilities (the process is known as “administering the estate”) can sometimes be a little more complicated than you might expect.

When a person dies leaving a Will, it is the executor’s job to complete these tasks. Where someone dies without a Will, someone needs to step up to be the “administrator” of the estate – this person is usually the major beneficiary depending on the circumstances.

Where a deceased person owned real estate it is important to think about the capital gains tax consequences of their death and the timing of the sale of estate property.

Tax law says that provided that a property was the deceased person’s main residence and that the property is sold within two years of the date of the deceased’s death there will typically be no capital gains tax payable as a result of the sale.

In addition to the specific timeline/deadline, there are some exceptions to this rule for example if the relevant property was not the deceased’s main residence/principle place of residence and in some circumstances if the property was being used to derive an income.

While the rules say that if the property is not sold within two years from the date of the deceased’s death there are some circumstances in which the CGT-free period can be extended for a period of up to an additional 18 months (total 42 months after the deceased’s

date of death). The same residency rules apply, that is that the property needs to have been the deceased’s main residence however if the sale of the property has been delayed due to circumstances outside the executor administrator’s control, for example due to some dispute about the ownership of the property, the deceased’s Will/estate being contested or subject to litigation of if the administration of the estate is otherwise complex then usually an extension will be automatically granted.

If the automatic extension does not apply you still might be able to apply to the ATO for an extension of the CGT period in certain circumstances. You should seek the advice of a qualified lawyer and accountant in this regard.

Capital gains tax was introduced in the mid-1980s and only applies to properties acquired after September 20 1985. The blanket rule that there is no capital gains tax payable on a property acquired by a person prior to September 20 1985 still applies, even with respect to deceased estates.

While these matters are not strictly legal in nature, the law and tax interact frequently particularly in the context of deceased estates.

It is important that if you are an executor or a beneficiary you obtain appropriate legal and taxation advice in relation to any inheritance you stand to receive.

MAN FINED OVER UNAUTHORISED GUN

A Werrington Downs man with a loaded rifle in his caravan has been handed a 12-month Intensive Correction Order (ICO) and a $1000 fine.

Brett Baker, 57, learnt his fate at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, May 30, after he previously pleaded guilty to unsafely storing an unauthorised firearm and ammunition.

On the evening of March 15, 2023, he was formally charged with ‘possess unauthorised firearm’, ‘not keep firearm safely’ and ‘possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority’ after police were called to his home in relation to a domestic incident.

with Daniel McKinnon WW48104

According to a set of facts tendered to the court, police were greeted by a witness who pointed at the accused’s caravan and said, “there’s a firearm in there”. It is alleged that police opened the door and found a loaded .22 Caliber Rifle lying on the floor and an ammunition belt with live rounds.

On Thursday, the court heard that Baker has never been licenced to possess firearms or ammunition but has since applied for a licence.

“You won’t be getting one now,” Magistrate Fiona Toose said.

Baker was fined $1000 and given a 12 month ICO until May 2024.

A message of persistence

Blake Attard’s passion for cars has him in the running for a major honour

have enough money to buy it,” he told the Weekender

uncles, he couldn’t be more thrilled with how it’s turned out.

St Clair resident Blake Attard has had a keen interest in cars ever since he was a little kid, playing with toy cars and racing video games. But, ever since Holden caught his attention, his interest has become a hobby, with Attard now in the running for the 2023 Young Street Machine of the Year.

In November 2019, the now-22-year-old bought the first car he’s ever owned – a 1974 Holden HJ One Tonner. Just a short trip away in Lithgow, Attard said seeing the Facebook Marketplace ad felt like fate, though getting the car into his possession was no easy feat.

“It was six months prior to buying it that I first saw the ad on Facebook, but I didn’t

“I worked and worked, hawk-eyeing it, hoping it hadn’t sold, and we managed to buy it just in time, because the owner was about to take the ad down.”

Upon seeing the vehicle for the first time, Attard admits it was a “jaw-dropper”. But, aiming to keep to the previous owner’s wishes of preserving it just as they’d tried to, he quickly got to work.

Despite saying that the body of the car was perfect when he got it, Attard did almost a full restoration on the mechanical side, along with a revamped interior, including new carpet and re-upholstered seats.

Though it has been a long process, taking place over almost four years, Attard said that thanks to the help of his Dad and

“For me, it was about inheriting what my father has learned over the years so I can carry it on,” he said.

“The car looked good the day we bought it, but as it sits here today, to me it’s perfect.”

Attard assures that his car is “driven not hidden”, being taken to shows every weekend, pending weather. Now, it’s facing its next challenge.

Anyone who knows cars knows that Street Machine is a big name, a feature in the magazine considered the ultimate glory.

Last year, Attard was first tempted by their Young Street Machine of the Year category, which celebrates Aussie car builders under 25. Despite not making the top 16 in 2022, he was yet to admit defeat, returning this year with a better version of the car which would ultimately get him to the top.

“When I found out I was in the top 16, I was thrilled,” he said.

“It’s a big achievement, everyone dreams of being featured in Street Machine, so I was so excited.”

The competition winner will be awarded $2500 and a feature in Street Machine, with votes closing this Sunday, May 28.

“To me, it’s not about the prize, it’s about the glory,” he said.

“It’s a big thing to take out Street Machine, so winning would mean ticking something off my bucket list. It’s something to cherish, and something to keep with the car.”

Next time, try a piece of paper

APenrith man caught graffitiing a bridge pylon with his son has been fined $300.

The 34-year-old appeared at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May, 23, charged with ‘intentionally mark premises etc without consent’.

Around 4.40 pm on November 28, 2022, an off duty police officer observed the man and his 12-year-old son spray painting a large tag on the railway bridge pylon east of Bruce Neale Drive in Penrith.

According to a set of facts tendered to the court, police started photographing the pair who were both holding cans of spray paint.

“Don’t take photos of my son… I didn’t know it was illegal to do it here,” the man yelled.

They then packed up and left the scene, carrying a large box back to their car.

Court documents reveal that police attended their home on February 6, 2023, and found their black Nissan Pathfinder parked in the driveway.

Police knocked on the door and immediately recognised the accused as the man who was graffitiing the pylon, but he declined to reply to the allegations.

On Tuesday, the tattooist was represented by a lawyer. He told the court that the man tried to find a legal wall for his “very talented son” to practice graffitiing but made the mistake of taking him to an illegal wall.

Magistrate Georgia Knight was frank in sentencing, saying she “didn’t know why he couldn’t practice on a piece of paper at home”.

McKenzie was convicted of the single offence and fined $300.

Lifesize plan brings new airport to life in Auburn

flow as if it was built,” he said.

It can be a difficult feat to imagine what the Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport at Badgerys Creek will look like once it is complete.

A unique business has helped with that quest by using patented state-of-theart technology to show the terminal’s complete layout on a 1:1 scale.

Lifesize Plans’ 630-square-metre showroom in Auburn was transformed over three visits to reflect critical spaces of the terminal including the check-in, security, boarding and baggage claim areas.

CEO of Lifesize Plans James Hickey told the Weekender that the system assists businesses in the design and building process.

“We get emailed a plan and with our projectors we find a dimension that we reflect to scale so that the client can experience the sizing and

“The airport has so many people involved and stakeholders with different responsibilities, so this means everyone is on the same page on what is happening and no costly mistakes happen before construction begins.”

As well as walking through the projected floorplans, WSI brought in a check-in kiosk, bag-drop, trolley, and props to place on the design to bring a more realistic experience of what a traveller would encounter.

WSI General Manager Customer Experience, Kylie Morris said that it was a highly valuable experience to ensure that the airport’s design maximises the flow for a large number of customers, including members of their customer research panel who attended.

“It was important for our Executive Committee and key design and customer teams to see these spaces brought to life,” Morris said.

“The team did find design

refinements from the walkthrough, which we may not have identified had we not experienced the design firsthand.

“Customer representatives, of different age groups and abilities, giving their feedback on the design was an exciting and highly valuable process which further helped assess and define our customers’ needs.”

Hickey said that collaborating on the project was a great experience for the business

and an example of how the airport will provide further opportunities for the region.

“The Lifesize Plans experience ensured Western Sydney International Airport’s terminal was seamlessly designed from a customer experience point of view,” he said.

“WSI Airport will drive growth in western Sydney for decades to come and it’s important for associated businesses to identify local collaboration opportunities to maximise their prospects.”

at its core: Hobby Hub is changing lives of locals

attendees threw a surprise party, complete with singing and a delicious cake.

In 2021, Thornton Community Group President Jen Russel came up with the idea of the Hobby Hub Project – an opportunity for local residents to work on a craft of their choice whilst making new friends.

Now, that concept has become a reality, and is having an unimaginable impact.

Since commencing in 2022, thanks to a Community Assistance Program grant from Penrith City Council, Hobby Hub has seen a core group of 12 women meet every Wednesday morning at the Thornton Community Centre to do anything creative, ranging from painting, to knitting and writing.

Over time, the project has resulted in more than the completion of a few projects, with neighbours meeting one another for the first time, old friendships being rekindled, and new ones being made.

This is the case for Phyllis Burger, who was one of the original residents of Thornton.

For her 90th birthday, Hobby Hub

According to Burger, spending time with the women has seen her come out of her shell for the first time.

“A friend of mine said, ‘Why don’t you come along with us on Wednesday?’, and it’s the best thing I ever did in my whole life,” she said.

“I’ve enjoyed it so much, meeting these lovely ladies.

“I feel a lot better in myself now, and a lot younger!”

Jaci Loye is a newer member of the group, with only three weeks under her belt. However, she said that Hobby Hub has already made a big difference in her life, with the first meeting resulting in “immediate happiness”.

“My husband and I went on so many vacations that when I was home, I’d just unpack, relax, and then go again. When we stopped doing that, I realised that I really missed people, and decided to try out the Hobby Hub,” she said.

“I came in here, and everybody was so wonderful, and accepting and open. It’s a wonderful place, and

I came out of my first day feeling so uplifted, with any kind of loneliness of looking at four walls completely gone.”

Earlier this year, the group were awarded another grant, which saw them begin the ‘Cast on, Learn, and Give Back’ project.

As part of this project, tutor and fibre expert Erica Berton was brought in to teach the women to knit 10-inch squares, which will be

delivered to Wrap With Love, and assembled into blankets for needy people all over Australia, and the world.

The group aims to continue doing good by hosting a morning tea for the Cancer Council next month.

However, Russel said it’s the ladies that are most important.

The women all contribute to pay rent for the space when a grant is not available, to keep the Thornton

Community Centre filled with laughter, discussion and crafting week after week.

“This is the prescription for mental wellbeing. We’re so blessed to have this,” Russel said. Do you have a similar community story to share? We’d love to hear from you. Email news@ westernweekender.com.au, call us on 4722 2998 or send us a message on social media.

Gatsby theme for high tea

Our Community Cares preparing to host another major fundraising event

“This follows on from our work with the hospital, where we provided funds to help with the development of a sensory room,” Hicks said.

This July, the team from Our Community Cares will be hosting their 10th annual high tea event, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever.

After a number of successful years with the event, Our Community Cares first brought on the idea of themes in 2022, with their garden party high tea. This year, they’re doing something different once again.

“We are very excited about the theme,” Kim Hicks said.

“It’s a Gatsby, 1920s theme for anyone who wants to come dressed in theme. You don’t have to, but you can!”

This year’s event will also be their largest yet, being held at St Marys Band Club.

“It’ll be the biggest one they’ve ever done at 250,” she said.

“The benefit to the team is that this time we’ll have the opportunity to be more involved with the guests, because we won’t be doing the food service. That’s something we’re all looking forward to.”

In addition to the delicious food and drinks on offer, Hicks said there will be a craft store set up for people to shop at, games to be played, and a raffle, with prizes including high tea at Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains, meal vouchers from Outback Steakhouse, and hampers from Lindt.

“We encourage people to save up and bring along their bags of gold coins, because we’ll be using those!” she said.

This year, the event will be raising funds

for a dementia program to be run in the local community, with courses to be made available for retirement villages and other local people to learn about the condition.

“It’s been pointed out that it’s a big need in the community, there’s more and more people getting dementia, and so we wanted to be able to do what we can to help our local community and anyone impacted, so not just people with dementia, but the families of the people who would like to know better how to handle and work with relatives and friends who are impacted by dementia.”

With sell-outs every year prior, Hicks is hoping to see the community come out and get involved once again at the July 29 event in St Marys.

“We’ve had a couple of really good years with fabulous community involvement,” Hicks said.

“It’s been amazing how much support we’ve gotten from the community, the generosity of people, even when they come to get their gifts wrapped for example, is amazing, it’s really, really lovely and really heartwarming.”

Our Community Cares’ High Tea will be held at St Marys Band Club on Saturday, July 29 at 1pm.

Tickets are $40.

Local company’s big win

the

Since 2017, owner of Penrith Solar Centre, Jake Warner, has ensured that his business is doing everything it can to not only service customers, but do good for the environment. Now, it’s being recognised as one of the best of all time.

Penrith Solar Centre was awarded Enphase Installer of the Year in both 2021 and 2022 – an award judged based on customer experience. According to Warner, it’s their in-house training facility that ensures their employees are in tip-top shape, resulting in an unmatched experience for clients.

“It’s definitely our customer service that sets us apart, and our in-house installers that we use, as opposed to sub-contractors,” he said.

“Ultimately, it comes down to people. Our people are fantastic.”

Though Warner said that heading into this year’s Smart Energy Conference, he wouldn’t have been surprised to bring home a hat-trick, Penrith Solar Centre came out of the trip as not only Enphase Installer of the Year again, but also Enphase Sales and Customer Experience Winner, #1 All Star Best Solar Company Award, winner of the Intersolar Germany trip, Top 5 Most Popular Solar Retailer, and #1 Solar Retailer

Solar Centre takes out swag of awards at conference

in Australia by SunWiz. For Warner, this was completely surreal.

“Enphase Installer of the Year was kind of expected, but the greatest rated solar retailer of all time was not expected, that was a complete surprise,” he said.

“I knew that we were rated quite highly, but we didn’t realise that we were number one of all time, so that caught me off guard, that was pretty special.”

What makes it even more special is that the award-winning business has found a home in the west.

“It’s a world-class service with worldclass people, right here in Penrith,” Warner said.

Now, Warner said he’s back to focusing on the long game – being the number one contributor to net zero in Australia by 2050.

“We’re going to have the most rooftop solar deployed out of any solar company, and a big part of how we’re able to do this, is by only using really great quality solar,” he said.

“I’m really confident that everything we install right now will make it to 2050, whereas for other companies using inferior products, it’s not possible for them to make it to 2050, which is Australia’s net zero target.

“We believe we’ve already got a head start, and we’re just going to keep working towards that goal.”

The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

Another first for Penrith!

I am excited to announce yet another first for Penrith City Council with its Clothing and Textiles Drop-off Event on Saturday, June 10.

This event offers residents the opportunity to responsibly dispose of unwanted household clothing and textiles, promoting resource recovery and diverting waste from landfill.

Clothing and textiles can’t be recycled in your yellow-lidded recycling bin at home, so it’s important to take unwanted clothes to the right place, such as Council’s free Clothing and Textile Recycling Drop-off Event at The Kingsway Playing Fields car park in Werrington, on Saturday, June 10, between 9am and 3.30pm.

If you have unwearable items that cannot be donated to charity, our partners, Textile Recyclers Australia (TRA), are accepting items such as clothing, belts, hats, handbags, shoes, sheets, and towels. These items will be sorted, shredded, and processed to be made into new products like blankets, floor rugs and tote bags.

Please note, only clean items will be accepted on the day.

It has been said that “For Australia, even a 6.6 per cent reduction in textiles going to landfill will represent the removal of a clothing pile the size of the Sydney Harbour Bridge” – Leila Naja Hibri, CEO Australian Fashion Council.

Items in brand-new condition are welcome to be dropped off at this event. These will be donated to local charities partnered with TRA including The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter and WestCare Community Services.

I want to thank the Penrith community for contributing to the Circular Economy – you’ve really embraced our waste initiatives and continue to show the rest of NSW and Australia that Penrith are the leaders in waste management. For more details about the event visit penrith.city/events.

BUSINESS

Trademarks: Why you keep hearing about them and what you should do

Have you ever been to a foreign country; where you are hungry, desperately looking for food, and unable to understand the language? Suddenly, you spot huge yellow arches in the distance, and you think to yourself: “Yay, it’s McDonald’s, I am saved!!”

A few weeks ago, I shared my business trademark experience with IP Australia. Like many other businesses, we presumed that trademarks do not apply to us because we are too small when we start a business. However, after attending many workshops and information sessions, I kept hearing the same message over and over: if you are spending time and resources to build a brand, then, you need to ensure it is protected.

So, what is a trademark and what does it all mean?

A trademark is a symbol, design, or phrase that distinguishes a product or service from its competitors. Trademarks serve as an identification tool for customers that help differentiate products and services from one another.

There are several benefits to business trademarking.

One of the most significant advantages of trademarking is legal protection.

Once a trademark has been registered, it

a similar or identical trademark for the same category of goods and/or services.

If a competitor attempts to use a trademark that is like your own, you can take legal action against the offender to protect your brand.

Here are some key lessons I have learned through this process:

1. Make sure you have a basic understanding of trademarks, preferably by attending workshops and information sessions.

2. Seek professional help early and ensure your agent or IP Attorney is experienced, especially if you are applying for international trademark registration.

3. Before seeking to apply for a trademark, do a thorough search of trademarks that have already been registered in Australia and overseas. What is recognised or available domestically does not come with a guarantee that it will be available or recognised overseas.

4. Before exploring different trademark options or designs in another country, make sure to check with the IP office of that country, or use IP Australia’s website to search international databases.

5. Trademarks must be a vital component of your marketing plan, and if you are looking to export into another country, make sure IP ownership is mentioned in the contract.

THE DHARUG CONNECTION

A special weekly focus on local Indigenous affairs and services

Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services

Listening to Country provides a way forward for families

Budyari darrabarra (good day).

Have you ever noticed the stand of Casuarina trees (gumin) at Jamison Park in Penrith, alongside York Road?

Many years ago, on a winter afternoon at the park with my mudyin (family), as we approached the Casuarinas, they were clacking, whistling, and muttering in the strong breeze. A chill came over me and I gasped “there are the spirits of Elder Women inside those trees”.

I subsequently discovered that there is a Dreaming story

from both the Dharawal nation (south-west Sydney) and the Dharug nation (western Sydney) about the Casuarina trees. The Dharawal story tells of how the spirits of the older women came to inhabit the Casuarina trees (1).

The Dharug story tells of how the Casuarina needles protect the children from snakes, and the children can roll the seed pods from the Casuarinas around in their hands to take their worries away (2).

Casuarina trees grow in families and are very resilient. They grow upright and tall, and each

tree is unique. On a recent walk with a friend along the Nepean River, I saw how the young Casuarinas were still standing and thriving after being completely submerged and battered by the floods over the past few years. Although Casuarinas are known as the ‘she-oak’, some trees have male and female flowers, or there can be separate male and female trees.

Casuarina Aboriginal Family Project was named after the trees that have a story that entwines people (yura) and Country (ngurra). ‘Project’ because life is

How league inspired Clarke Scott to help

For Clarke Scott, rugby league was always in his blood, starting and ending his career as a Warragamba Wombat. But, it’s through this that he became a leader for Aboriginal people, both in his sport, and in his work.

In 1973, the Wiradjuri man was one of just 20 players hand-selected for the first ever all-Aboriginal rugby league team. The five-eighth was picked by a selection panel that included league legends such as Eric Simms and Johnny Raper to go on the Aboriginal All Stars tour to New Zealand, which saw them win seven of the nine games they played over 10 days.

For Scott, the hospitality he experienced in New

Zealand is something he said he’ll never forget, both during his playing

days, and at the recent reunion at this year’s NRL All Stars match in February.

“At the hotel, people were asking for photos, we were celebrities, I couldn’t believe it. There were hangis every night, we were welcomed into Maori player’s houses and families. Then going back 50 years later, the respect was still there, they cared about us,” Scott said.

Scott returned from the tour inspired to pay the leadership and mentorship he received forward,

by entering a career at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.

30 years ago, Scott became the first person employed by the District in an Aboriginal identified position as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer, breaking down barriers between clinicians and the community, and running Aboriginal Boys Cultural Mentoring Camps out of Lawson Community Health Centre.

Scott went on to serve two consecutive five-year terms as a valued member

of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Board, letting his passion for championing for health equity for the Aboriginal community drive his career.

Now, as Aboriginal Health Programs Manager, Drug & Alcohol Services, he’s continuing to do just that, despite some of the challenges the job has provided.

“The stories behind the issues are devastating, helping to address those issues is the challenge for me. But, I know it’s part of the job where I can make a difference,” Scott said.

Over the years, Scott has seen firsthand how the industry has transformed, with the addition of a Director for Aboriginal Health making an immense difference in their ability to create change at the hospital.

“Having someone at a higher level to support staff and make decisions is so important,” Scott said.

“Things have changed in health over many years and now that we have a larger Aboriginal workforce, they will and can assist the community to guide them through the system too.”

THE FORTNIGHT THAT SAVED LUAI

! Freddy’s faith in Luai: Jarome Luai was all but gone from the NSW side a month ago, but a stunning fortnight of form and Brad Fittler’s desire to have a club combination in the halves has saved him. But Luai likely knows he must perform in Adelaide or confront the possibility of losing his jumper to Nicho Hynes, who is breathing down his neck and will sit on the bench for the Origin opener against Queensland next Wednesday. Luai is among five Panthers who will run out onto Adelaide Oval – Nathan Cleary, Brian To’o, Liam Martin and Isaah Yeo are also in Freddy’s team. After initially missing out on selection, Stephen Crichton has been named 18th man.

! How Origin week will unfold: It’ll be a busy week for the Penrith players involved in next Wednesday’s Origin opener. Outside of the obvious training commitments, there’s plenty of other things on the to do list – including the True Blues Dinner, which was held on Monday night. The squad will fly to Adelaide on Monday, ahead of a media appearance in Rundle Mall on Tuesday and then the game itself on Wednesday. The Panthers representatives will fly back to Sydney on Thursday and will check in with the club, ahead of a decision on whether they back-up against the Dragons on Sunday, June 4.

! Leniu back next week: Good news for Penrith’s forward pack, with Spencer Leniu to return from his ruptured testicle against the Dragons next Sunday night. I’m told he’s a certainty for the clash, which sits in the rare 6.15pm timeslot at BlueBet Stadium.

! Luke gets game time: Penrith coach Ivan Cleary sent Soni Luke back to reserve grade last weekend (pictured below) to ensure he gets plenty of game time as the team still works its way through its dummy half conundrum. Luke only got 17 minutes of game time against the Broncos last Thursday night, prompting Cleary to ensure he got some work in the legs against the Magpies on Saturday. There’s no question Mitch Kenny is warming into the season at 9, with calls for Luke to be the club’s starting hooker starting to quieten.

! Back as favourites: South Sydney’s time as Premiership favourites didn’t last long. The TAB has reinstalled the competition-leading Panthers as favourites to win the Grand Final at $3.50, with the Rabbitohs out to $4.50. The big fall from grace is the Roosters, who have blown out to $15.00.

! Cleary breaks records: It was a busy night for Penrith halfback and co-captain Nathan Cleary at Suncorp Stadium against the Broncos. The 25-year-old become the youngest player in rugby league history to reach 1300 career points, and his field goal also took him to the top of the record books as far as one-pointers for Penrith are concerned.

! Stadium back in spotlight: A piece in News Corp publications over the weekend suggested the new Penrith Stadium was back as a major talking point, but the truth is the whole thing remains stalled while the State Government work out whether the $300 million commitment will go ahead. Knocking down and re-building the stadium on the current footprint would barely increase the capacity, place the venue under the Government’s

control and likely force loyal Western Grandstand members out of their seats to make way for more corporate facilities. It’s hardly a win. I’m still of the opinion the Government will eventually scrap the project entirely and look towards an upgrade of sorts.

! Spotted: Penrith prop Moses Leota signing and giving his boots to an excited fan at Suncorp Stadium last Thursday night.

involving assault charges is over – which could be some time away. That situation likely suits the Penrith Panthers just fine; they’ve had growing frustrations with Kent and Fox Sports over the way the team has been talked about in recent years. Nobody is smiling over Kent’s alleged actions and everyone is concerned about the alleged victim, but there’s no complaints from anyone that he’s not on air at the moment. One thing that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Penrith and the wider NRL community is News Corp’s lack of coverage of Kent’s case.

! Monitoring health: The Panthers are well aware of how their players are travelling –especially given so many have young families. Each day, the players sign on using a tablet and they rate their sleep from the previous night and their current overall health. It’s been a good initiative – ensuring officials can catch any issues early.

! Kent still off air: News Corp journalist Paul Kent remains stood down and wasn’t back in his ‘NRL 360’ chair this week, suggesting he’ll remain off air until the court process

As the Panthers enjoy a ‘bye’ round this weekend I thought I’d turn my attention to the four Penrith players who are coming off contract at the end of 2023, which I believe the club needs to re-sign beyond the current season.

While locking up marquee and star players is essential, there is also a tier of players just below that level which are equally as important to a football team. They are the players who provide plenty of ‘bang for your buck’ so to speak.

First cab of the rank is a pretty-obvious one in Scott Sorensen. Long before his best game in Panthers colours against the Roosters a few weeks ago, plenty of clubs had taken notice of Sorensen. Many are now sniffing around preparing to make an offer to this late rugby league bloomer.

His value to a team is immeasurable. Sorensen is a hard worker who has benefited from being in the Panthers system for the last three years. Now there’s no doubt the club will need to stump up some more cash to keep him but he’s worth every penny.

Soni Luke is another player worth keeping for a number of reasons. He has a good footy brain, knows when to run, when to pass and let’s face it, provides the perfect one-two punch with Mitch Kenny as the

starting hooker. One, I feel, doesn’t work without the other.

There’s been some interest in Luke, who in 2024 will turn 28. Obviously at that age he wants to maximise his value before he makes a decision, but he’d be crazy not to stay with the Panthers and continue to develop his game. Again, he will need an upgrade on his current deal but nothing that should break the bank.

The third player I’d re-sign quick smart is Jaeman Salmon. A ‘no-frills’ footballer who also knows the Panthers system inside and out and can play in the forwards as well as in the backs when he comes off the bench.

His value to the team is his versatility and experience but only at a fair price, of course.

Finally, with Stephen Crichton on the move in 2024, I think there is a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings… or centres in Thomas Jenkins. Jenkins has filled out his 188cm tall frame over the last few years but still possesses plenty of speed and power to be more than a handful in the top grade.

Combined the four players I’ve selected for a contract extension beyond this season will provide plenty of value to the team and not chew up too much of the salary cap at the same time.

And you gotta love that!

A QUEENSLAND DEATH NOTICE

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the passing of long-time Queensland legend Mr Picknstick.

Mr Picknstick passed early on Monday morning after a severe bout of change swept aside his loyalty and dedication to the cause.

We celebrate his life of more than 40 years, in which time Mr Picknstick had plucked players from reserve grade, out of hospital beds, as freckle-faced unknowns, from the other side of the world, in fact any sort of obscurity, because, well, that’s what Queensland did.

After a long battle with the Blue virus that had chipped away at him for decades, the bout of change led to a rapid and fatal demise earlier this week.

matt russell

Firstly, try-scorer and player of the match in last year’s deciding Game III, Kalyn Ponga, was ruthlessly cast aside despite returning from concussion concerns to blow the Titans apart. Given his head knock against Cronulla and the form of Reece Walsh, this positional change didn’t prove fatal but certainly took its toll.

The deciding moment came when Dane Gagai was left out of the Queensland team. Mr Picknstick noted that Gagai had played every Origin since his debut in 2015. He repeatedly saved his best for State of Origin. He was often Queensland’s best, named Man of the Match multiple times and Player of the Series in 2017.

This season, Gagai is posting career high numbers with ball in hand – runs, run metres, post contact metres, try assists and offloads. His attacking numbers dwarf those of the player named in his position. A real hammer blow to Mr Picknstick.

Even though Gagai has missed 17 tackles over the last month, resulting in six tries, his missed tackle rate is way down on last year and on par with some of his best years with Queensland.

With his final breath Mr Picknstick muttered, “…he’s a proven, reliable centre… replaced by a fullback… who still brings plenty to the table… who’s looked after QLD for so long… and you couldn’t even name him on the wing… that will do me…”. And with that he was gone. We invite all guests to join the New South

Wales Blues to celebrate a life well lived, and a legend that will no longer have to be countered by rival teams.

Rest in peace Mr Picknstick and god bless Queensland.

PENRITH SCORE BIG NSW CUP WIN

Two first half tries to Luke Garner has helped the Penrith Panthers to a resounding 40-10 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Leichhardt Oval.

The Magpies started the stronger of the two teams, opening the scoring in the 14th minute, before Garner’s first try put the Panthers in front in the 20th minute.

Back-to-back sets attacking Wests’ line led to a try to Preston Riki, before Garner backed it up with his second shortly after, giving the Panthers an 18-4 half-time lead.

The Panthers’ momentum continued after the restart, with Daeon Amituanai scoring after a string of offloads.

lower grades report

@LachlanJeffery

They were away again shortly after, however were denied a try due to an obstruction. Off the back of the penalty, Israel Ogden scored for Wests, cutting the lead to 24-10.

Tom Jenkins scored his 10th try of the season in the 60th minute to push the margin back out to 20.

Trent Toelau extended the Panthers’ lead with eight minutes remaining after Wests lost two players to the sin bin, before an intercept off a scrum put the Panthers on the attack for Matt Stimson to score at the death, pushing the final margin to 40-10.

In Jersey Flegg, a disappointing second half saw the Panthers fall 28-20 against Wests Tigers.

The Tigers opened the scoring after just six minutes through Harrison Henson, before a double to Timothy Sielaff-Burns gave the Panthers a 10-4 lead at half-time.

Back-to-back tries to Josh Feledy and Jay Kirk gave the Tigers a 16-10 lead, before Angelis Hotere-Papalii scored against the run of play to

cut the deficit to two. Another pair of quickfire tries ballooned the Panthers’ deficit to 14 points with 10 minutes remaining.

A late consolation try to Ryley Smith brought the final score back to a more respectable 28-20. In Round 13, the NSW Cup squad flies to Auckland to face the Warriors, while Flegg has a bye.

MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PENRITH’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

JANE DOES IT HER WAY

You wouldn’t be alone if, during the pandemic, you picked up a new skill or two, whether it’s baking bread, crochet, or how to use Zoom. As it turns out, Jane Barnes was in the same boat, and it’s earned her the spotlight in her very musical family.

When the first lockdown began in 2020, The Jane Barnes Band was born from the family’s yearning to connect with both people at home, and with one another.

As part of this, it was Jane who wanted to step up her music ability. Luckily, she had some world-class teachers right there with her.

“My brother-in-law Diesel set up a guitar for me that was easy to play, and all the others really encouraged me, and I had lessons either on Zoom, or teaching myself on the Internet,” she said.

Singing songs that Jimmy and Jane grew up with, ranging from Dolly Parton to The Beatles, Jane found that the reception they received was more overwhelmingly positive than she could have ever imagined.

“I think all of those classic old songs took people back to their growing up, another generation, another moment in time. We all had time and space to connect with that,” she said.

Now, with a few loungeroom and verandah shows under her belt, she’s ready to take the show on the road.

It’s no secret that the Barnes’ love working together, with Jimmy and Mahalia just a few that will be coming along for the ride. But, with Jane finally the name on everyone’s lips, she’s intrigued to see just how everyone will cope.

“I’m usually the mother of the family. I’m in control of my area and my home. This time, I’ll be out there working with them in a field that they are so expert in, and at this stage in my life, it’s good to be able to connect and relate to your children in different ways,” she said.

“It will be very interesting because both Jimmy and Mahalia are very used to being in control of what goes on on the stage, in their own bands. It will be interesting, the dynamic of things, of performers, and the chatter we’ll have when I say, ‘Umm hello? Excuse me! This is The Jane Barnes Band!’.”

Their show at The Joan is the latest one to be announced, and their final stop on this leg of the tour.

When it comes to the setlist, Jane said audiences should expect the classics, along with a few surprises.

“There will be a basic list that we’ll do every night, where Jimmy will do some of his songs, and some Chisel songs, and Mahalia will do a couple of hers,” she said.

“We, with The Jane Barnes Band, put out about 500 songs in total, so it’s a very difficult process trying to narrow that down. We’ll be switching the sets on different nights.”

With a more intimate feel than some of their previous shows, Jane is hoping audiences will feel as though they’re one of the Barnes’.

“This tour will be a glimpse of what goes on at our dinner parties, or our family and friends’ gatherings. We have great food, and then we end up doing music as the night gets later. It really is an extension of our living room,” she said.

The Jane Barnes Band will be on at The Joan on Sunday, June 18 at 7pm. Tickets are $99. For more information or to book, visit thejoan.com.au.

THIS MUSICAL IS SIMPLY THE BEST!

Thank you from the bottom my heart for welcoming me with open arms once again.”

After breaking box office records in September last year, having sold more tickets in the pre-sale period than any other show at Theatre Royal Sydney since it reopened, ‘TINA – The Tina Turner Musical’ has finally opened in Sydney.

Upon being announced last year, Turner expressed her excitement to be bringing the musical to Australia.

“Australia has always shared abundant love with me, going back to my early concerts in the late ‘70s through the uplifting partnership with the National Rugby League. It is very special for me that we will be reunited,” she said.

“The joy, passion and message of resilience in my musical is so important now as ever.

In addition to Ruva Ngwenya in the role of Tina Turner, and Tim Omaji in the role of Ike Turner, 10-year-old Werrington Downs local Amara Kavaliku can be seen starring as Anna-Mae in the production, which runs until early October.

With 37 award nominations including Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards and Best Musical at the Tony Awards, it’s no surprise that people are already flocking to this show-stopping production of Tina Turner’s life story.

You don’t want to miss this – it’s simply the best!

‘TINA – The Tina Turner Musical’ is on at Theatre Royal Sydney until October 8. For more information or to book tickets to see the show, head online and visit tinathemusical.com.au.

JUST LIKE HAVING ELTON JOHN IN PENRITH!

After performing all across the world in over 30 countries, and being the first and only Elton John tribute artist worldwide to be invited to perform at the most prestigious tribute artist festival in the world, TRIBFEST UK, highly applauded performer Greg Andrew is bringing his Rocketman concert to The Joan in Penrith next month.

When it comes to performing the music and having the look of Sir Elton John, there’s no one quite like Greg Andrew. For Andrew, it’s the song ‘Your Song’ that he recalls inspiring his love of Elton.

“The beautiful piano melody I can remember learning when I was a kid,” he said.

“As a young kid learning classical piano and then going on to the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, there are certain parallels you could say with Sir Elton. It is an incredible honour and privilege to perform these iconic songs, and have the audiences react the way they do.”

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary release of ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’,

Andrew will be providing a two-hour concert production that must not be missed.

‘Rocketman Flying Solo – 50th Anniversary Tour’ will be on at The Joan on Saturday, June 3 at 8pm. Tickets are $65. For more information or to book, visit thejoan.com.au.

Fast X The Little Mermaid

2 hour, 21 minutes

The end of the road begins.

‘Fast X’, the 10th film in the ‘Fast & Furious’ Saga, launches the final chapters of one of cinema’s most storied and popular global franchises, now in its third decade and still going strong with the same core cast and characters as when it began.

Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto and his family have outsmarted, outnerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the

past who’s fuelled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this fam-

ily and destroy everything – and everyone – that Dom loves, forever.

2 hours, 0 minutes

In the new live action version of ‘The Little Mermaid’, Halle Bailey stars as the beloved Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure.

The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.

While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

Ê The judges for ‘Dancing with the Stars’ have been confirmed, with Sharna Burgess and Craig Revel Horwood joining Todd McKenney and Mark Wilson for the upcoming season. Original judges Helen Ritchey and Paul Mecurio won’t appear, with the latter becoming a Victorian MP of late. Burgess and Horwood are no strangers to ‘Dancing with the Stars’ having judged 10’s version a few years ago. ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is currently in production.

Ê Channel Nine cooking contest ‘Snackmasters’ has been axed after two seasons. Hosted by Poh Ling Yeow and Scott Pickett, the format saw experienced chefs compete to replicate famous snacks like Twisties, Drumsticks and Tim Tams. RIP.

Ê The second season of ABC ME teen comedy-drama ‘The PM’s Daughter’ will premiere on Monday, June 12 at 6pm. The 10-episode series stars Cassandra Helmot as Cat, the daughter of Australian Prime Minister Claire Fearon (Isabel Pérez). In this season, Cat’s finally found her groove as the PM’s daughter. But between a Federal Election campaign

JUST LIKE THAT, FOX

and a highly competitive tech internship, there’s no shortage of distractions … and that’s all before her mother’s love life starts making headlines. Doesn’t sound too bad for a kids’ show!

Ê Huge news! The second season of ‘Sex & the City’ sequel, ‘And Just Like That’ will premiere on Thursday, June 22 at 8.30pm on FOX Showcase and Binge. The new chapter follows Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. The first season was quite enjoyable, so hopefully season two continues that way!

Ê US sitcom ‘The Conners’ has been renewed for a sixth season. Despite its popularity, the ‘Roseanne’ spin-off doesn’t have a home in Australia.

Ê Fans of ‘Luxe Listings Sydney’ will be

excited to learn that ‘Luxe Listings Toronto’ is in production in Canada. The Toronto-based edition for Prime Video profiles a cutthroat real estate market, showcasing multimillion-dollar listings through the lives of Canada’s top real estate agents. If you’ve never seen the Sydney version of this series, it’s a must!

Ê Season three of revived US sitcom ‘iCarly’ drops on Paramount+ on Friday, June 2. In the new season, adult life continues to be complicated for Carly and her friends. Carly and Freddie struggle to redefine their relationship, Spencer seeks a return to his roots, and Harper’s reunion with an old rival leads to an unexpected outcome.

Ê ESPN will debut a new 30 for 30 doco, ‘The American Gladiators Documentary’, a two-part film directed by Ben Berman, which takes an unconventional approach to the tale of the famed reality-competition show. Parts one and two will be released at 3.30pm on Thursday, June 1 on ESPN.

Turning the tables

After working as a songwriter in Nashville for more than a decade, Jordyn Shellhart (pictured) has now released her own music. She dropped ‘Maybe Someday You’ll Have A Daughter’ to streaming services last week, the first track from her upcoming album, ‘Primrose’.

“‘Primrose’ comes from the Latin’ prima rosa’ which means first rose, as they’re typically the first flowers to bloom in spring,” Shellhart said.

“This is an album full of firsts and, of course, my first album. After 15 years writing songs in Nashville and dreaming of one day having

a first album, here it is. My ‘Primrose.’ I hope it moves someone, and I hope its vulnerability begets vulnerability in others.”

Wade’s health update American country starlet Morgan Wade has confirmed she’ll undergo a preventative double mastectomy in November.

Women with a #RAD51D mutation have about a 10-20 per cent lifetime risk for ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer.

Women with the mutation have about a 20-40 per cent lifetime risk for breast cancer with a tendency for triple-negative breast cancer.

Jelly Roll documentary

Jelly Roll has been one of the most talked about country artists of the last 12 months and it’s about to ramp up even further.

He’s about to drop a new documentary on May 30 called ‘Jelly Roll: Save Me’, which talks about his time in jail, and how it sparked his country music revival.

In a preview, he discusses his many challenges.

“They said (I was) too fat to be in the music business. They said my voice wasn’t cool enough. These are all mountains we had to conquer,” he said.

No word on an Australian air date for the doco yet.

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Remember there’s a fine line between making smart decisions at lightning speed and making impulsive moves that land you in hot water. This week will work best if you do something out of character for an Aquarius – think before you speak and act! Plus do your best to get the balance right between maintaining the status quo (with things that are working well) and hatching innovative new ideas. Friday favours bohemian friends and falling in love fast!

You won’t feel particularly energetic or motivated, as Saturn drains the gas out of your tank. Avoid the temptation to get carried away and make unrealistic promises. It will be very easy to over-extend yourself and find you’ve bitten off more than you can actually chew! Use the prevailing astro-winds wisely as you re-calibrate your expectations, especially when it comes to domestic matters and family members. Regular exercise and nutritious meals are a must!

When it comes to managing a financial matter, Uranus encourages you to be creative and have a flexible plan. And Jupiter urges you to look at a current problem in a more philosophical way. The situation is in the process of transforming in an organic fashion, so avoid rushing things and trying to force change. Instead, do your best to be much more pliable and relaxed. As birthday great Bob Dylan wisely observes, “There is nothing so stable as change.”

This week prosperity planet Jupiter is transiting through your sign, plus Mercury and Uranus are visiting Taurus too! So it’s time to be confident, creative and innovative, as you dream big dreams for the future. Draw inspiration from birthday great Stevie Nicks (who turns 75 on Friday). “My life is a testament to believing that if you want something, you can make it happen.” However – with taskmaster Saturn squaring the Sun – you’ll have to be patient.

As the Sun makes its annual transit through doppelganger Gemini (sign of the double-trouble Twins) prepare for a stop-start kind of week! Frantically go-go-go one day (Sun/Mars and Mars/Jupiter links) and frustratingly slow the next (Saturn square the Sun). So you need to be nimble, adaptable and stoical. Plus – with three planets snoozing in your solitude zone – take the time to slow down and reassess where you are going … and where you’ve been.

You’re keen to retreat into your cosy Crab cave as the Sun transits through your contemplation zone. So solo activities like yoga, meditation, reading and journal writing are favoured this week. But – if you stumble and make a mistake – don’t let negative self-talk drag you down. Be inspired by actress Joan Collins (who turned 90 on Tuesday): “Show me a person who has never made a mistake, and I’ll show you somebody who has never achieved much.”

Mars is charging through Leo and Jupiter is visiting your career zone, which increases motivation and confidence. So make the most of it! The next few weeks is the time to expand, enthuse, encourage and explore. Be inspired by actress Joan Collins (who was born on May 23, 1933): “I’m very lucky; I seldom get depressed. I’m a ‘glass half full’ person. In fact, it’s three-quarters full!” But tread carefully on Sunday when relations with a friend could be difficult.

International adventures and interstate escapades are calling as Mercury, Jupiter and Uranus activate your travel zone. Clever Virgos will be patient and make it a priority to plan (and save for) a dream holiday sometime soon. Your motto is from philosopher (and birthday great) Ralph Waldo EmersonL “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” A chat with a teacher or mentor puts a current problem in perspective.

Librans love sweet food and lazing about in the lap of luxury but avoid taking your health for granted. Be more disciplined about making positive lifestyle choices and prioritising time for regular exercise and nutritious home-cooked meals. As writer (and birthday great) Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, “The first wealth is health.” And is a close relationship going through a bumpy patch? Venus and Uranus ensure there’ll be some hiccups along the way.

You currently have five planets (Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune) transiting through your relationship zones. So other people could perplex you with their confusing behaviour. Avoid being a cynical Scorpio who sabotages partnerships. Nurture and cherish your close connections. If you’re unhappily single, then keep pursuing your dream of finding your soul mate. Be inspired by birthday great Stevie Nicks, “I live in the realm of romantic possibility.”

Have you got stuck in a rut when it comes to unhealthy eating choices and lack of exercise? It’s a good week to revamp your diet and reboot your fitness routine. The more you nurture and repair your body, the better you’ll feel – physically, mentally and emotionally. A close relationship is going through a bumpy patch, but Venus encourages you to swallow your pride, slap on a smile, and hold out the olive branch of peace. Feel the love Sagittarius!

On the weekend, the Sun forms a square with Saturn (your power planet) so you’ve certainly got the motivation and determination to get things done. But don’t let your desire to micro-manage everything (and everyone) get out of control! Aim to be disciplined and organised, but not obsessively so. The best way to approach current challenges and difficulties is to tap into your inner reserves of patience, resilience and Capricorn creativity.

TRAVEL

HILTON SYDNEY

Words: Troy Dodds | Photos: Supplied | More Info: www.hiltonsydney.com.au

The city may be more connected to the west than ever before, but that hasn’t stopped a Sydney staycation being the perfect antidote to a mid-year slump.

And if you’re looking for somewhere special to spend a weekend, you can’t go past Hilton Sydney, which sits perfectly located on George Street in the heart of the Sydney CBD.

Location

The Hilton is located in the heart of the city’s shopping and entertainment district, which makes it the perfect base for your weekend in the city.

Whether it’s a spot of shopping in Pitt Street Mall or other luxury retail strips, a visit to the Queen Victoria Building or a stroll down to the Harbour or The Rocks, you’d struggle to find a more conveniently located hotel.

Consider this: the QVB is a one minute walk, The Galeries is two minutes way, Sydney Tower is less than three minutes from the lobby and Darling Harbour is a leisurely 15 minute stroll away.

Accommodation

For our recent staycation, we stayed in a King Premium Room, which featured great

views of the city and was a spacious room with all your expected amenities.

If you’re missing the comforts of your usual routine and set-up, take advantage of the pillow menu – allowing you to have the most comfortable night’s sleep you can muster.

That said, you won’t have too much trouble given the supersized, comfortable bed that will ensure a great sleep.

We chose to use valet parking at the hotel,

and while it can get a tad expensive to choose this route – it’s highly recommended to avoid the stress of sorting out your own parking and then finding your way to the hotel reception. The staff were brilliantly attentive, and the car was back quickly when we needed it at the end of the weekend.

The front desk staff were exceptionally helpful and informative, and once you’ve taken in the beautiful lobby, a quick elevator ride will have you in the comfort of your room.

The Bars

Alright, let’s get serious: the bars at The Hilton will have you questioning any need

to explore other drinking locations within the city given everything you need it at your fingertips, or your lips!

Marble Bar (pictured far right), located underground, was built in 1893 and retains an historic feel that screams of beauty as soon as you descend into it.

I love Marble’s history – even in more recent years. In 2002, when the old Hilton closed its doors to begin a major renovation, Marble was encased in concrete to preserve its pristine quality, before reopening and becoming the stunning bar it is today.

A few cocktails on your must-try list: Autumn

in New York, featuring Olmeca Reposado Tequila, Pomme Verte, Apple Juice, Agave and Citrus; the Mezcal-based Naked and Famous, and the classic margarita – which was nothing short of delicious.

We chose to visit Marble as a pre-dinner drink venue, but it comes alive later in the night with live music most nights of the week. Whether you settle in for a few drinks or just have a nightcap, Marble must be part of your Hilton stay.

Also located in the Hilton is the Zeta bar, a ‘secret garden’ type concept with strong happy hour offerings, delicious bar food and

the western weekender » 54 Friday, May 26, 2023
“YOU WOULD STRUGGLE TO FIND A MORE CONVENIENTLY LOCATED HOTEL”

a killer specialty cocktail list (gin lovers, you’ll be in heaven here).

Dining

Here’s the thing about luxury or fine dining: It often offers you an expensive bill, but an unsatisfied result.

Not so the case at Glass (pictured bottom left), the Luke Mangan restaurant that is nothing short of stunning on every level – atmosphere, staff and, most importantly, food.

There’s a five course degustation option for $150 per person which is a great way to try a range of the meals available, but we chose the a la carte menu.

The buffalo milk burrata was nothing short of stunning, while the pan-fried potato gnocchi earns a place in my top entrees of all-time, it was so good.

We also tried the three mushroom ravioli, which comes with a

delicious hazelnut butter that was to die for. But the real star of the show was the steak – the Hereford Scotch Fillet melted in your mouth, making it worth every bit of its price tag.

Glass may be an expensive option, but if you’re heading into the Hilton for a special occasion, you shouldn’t look any further: it was absolute first class.

And if you’re not too full, Glass is also the home of a sumptuous breakfast buffet in the morning.

The final word City getaways for no specific reason are some of my favourite weekends – you get to explore your own city at a different level, almost putting an ‘informed tourist hat’ on.

The next time you decide it’s time for a staycation, look no further than Hilton Sydney – you’d struggle to do better.

Answers to your top pet questions

To make things easier, here are five popular Googled pet questions and answers, so you can get the advice and information you need quickly.

1. What should I feed my pet? The answer to this question largely depends on the type of pet you have. It’s important to research the proper diet for your specific animal. In general, most animals require a balanced combination of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to stay in good health. Online store Pet Food Australia has a balanced range of nutritious dog and cat food to keep your pet thriving. Visit www. petfoodaustralia.com.au.

2. How often should I take my pet to the vet? pet to the vet at least once a year for checkups and vaccinations. However, if you have a new puppy or kitten, they may require more frequent visits. Additionally, if your pet is exhibiting any signs of illness or injury, it’s important to schedule an appointment as

However, in general most animals require regular brushing and combing to keep their coat healthy and free of mats. They may also need regular baths or other treatments like nail trimming and emptying of their anal glands.

4. What kind of toys should I buy for my pet? This is a great question to ask, as toys are essential for keeping your pet entertained and mentally stimulated. When choosing toys for your pet, look for ones that are safe and appropriate for their size. Additionally, make sure the toys you select can be easily cleaned or replaced when necessary. Just be sure your dog isn’t chewing their toys and ingesting them which can lead to an emerPotty

Strategies to avoid dangerous falls

Falls are a major concern for elderly people, as they can lead to serious injuries, disabilities, and even death.

Falls can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor balance, weakened muscles, medication side effects, and environmental hazards. However, many falls can be prevented through falls prevention programs and strategies.

One of the most effective falls prevention strategies is exercise. Exercise can improve strength, balance, and coordination, which can help elderly people maintain their mobility and independence. Exercise programs should include a variety of activities, such as strength training, balance exercises, and aerobic activities. Additionally, exercise programs should be tailored to an individual’s needs and abilities and should be supervised by a healthcare professional.

Medication management is another important fall prevention strategy. Many medications, including sedatives, antihistamines, and antidepressants, can increase the risk of falls by causing dizziness or light-headedness. Therefore, it is important for elderly people to review their medications with their healthcare provider to ensure that they are not taking any medications that could increase their risk of falls.

Environmental modifications are also important in falls prevention. Elderly people should ensure that their homes are free of hazards, such as loose rugs, cluttered walkways, and poor lighting. They should also install grab bars in bathrooms and stairways and use non-slip mats in showers and bath-

tubs. Finally, they should wear appropriate footwear that fits well and provides good support.

Finally, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider such as a podiatrist can help identify and address any underlying medical conditions that could increase the risk of falls. For example, muscle weakness and instability when walking, can affect balance and coordination, and should be treated promptly. Additionally, conditions such as osteoporosis or arthritis can affect mobility and increase the risk of falls and should be managed through appropriate medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Falls prevention is an important issue for elderly people, and there are many strategies that can be used to prevent falls. Exercise, medication management, environmental modifications, and regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are all important strategies that can help elderly people maintain their mobility and independence, and reduce their risk of falls and fall-related injuries.

Pet of the Week

My name: Georgie

My proud owner: Lily Walsh I live in: Castlereagh

A bit about me: Georgie was first adopted at eightweeks-old, riddled with fleas and worms. However, after lots of love and care, he is now in tip top shape. Lily says Georgie’s not the materialistic type, and still prefers cardboard boxes and empty toilet paper rolls instead of toys!

Teen star to stay in red and black

The Western Sydney Wanderers will continue to be the home of Mamre Anglican College student Ella Abdul Massih after the teenager signed a one-year scholarship extension that will see her at the club until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The 17-year-old will be looking to build on her nine performances so far in the domestic A-League Women’s competition with the Wanderers over the next two seasons.

A national team regular, Abdul Massih was part of the CommBank Junior Matildas side that won the AFF U18 Women’s Championship.

Abdul Massih said she was excited to continue on her journey with the Wanderers.

“I’m super excited to watch myself develop and to see what this upcoming season holds for the club. We’re looking to go further next season and win,” she said.

“It’s been an amazing experience so far.

“I’ve got my first starts this season, it was cool to get a taste of that and to try and be a consistent starter is a goal of mine. The girls in the squad have been amazing and it’s made it so much easier.

“I’d like to win since we have everything here to be the best club in the league. We have the best facilities, and my individual goal is to be fitter and be a consistent starter. Overall, I’d really like to get into the Young Matildas set-up more often.”

Wanderers head coach Kat Smith praised Abdul Massih’s versatility and desire.

“Already a junior national representative, Ella has bountiful talent,” she said.

“In transitioning to professional football at such a young age, we can already see the desirable attributes shine through, such as her technical abilities with the ball and her endeavour and awareness without the ball, especially when defending in isolation.

“Ella’s versatility is a luxury with a wide range of technical/tactical abilities where she can be employed with both attacking and defensive principles in mind.”

Meanwhile, Western Sydney have confirmed the re-signing of midfielder Melissa Caceres for the upcoming A-League Women’s season.

Caceres is set to play in her second season with the Red & Black having joined the club off the back of a number of impressive performances in the Football NSW National Premier League Women’s competition.

The Bossley Park local scored on her debut for the Wanderers and went on to feature in 10 matches despite her season being marred with injuries.

Caceres said she was looking to pick up where she left off last season.

“My goal for next season would be to play consistently and that would also include performing well and my body being right,” she said.

In other Wanderers news, the club confirmed the departures of Morgan Schneiderlin, Romain Amalfitano, Yeni NgBakoto and Jack Warshawsky from the Men’s side.

The club has also parted ways with midfielder Terry Antonis by mutual consent with the termination of the player’s contract effective immediately in a move announced on Wednesday.

Jemma shines on athletics stage

I won my first medal – I thought this might be my sport. Javelin is very enjoyable, and I love doing it.”

Before joining Little Athletics herself, Berkshire Park resident Jemma Camilleri remembers watching her older siblings compete from the comfort of her pram.

“Ever since I was in a pram, I was always at everyone’s competitions watching them,” Jemma told the Weekender Fast-forward more than a decade later and the 14-year-old has gone from Tiny Tots to competing in athletics competitions on the national stage.

Last month, she travelled to Melbourne to tackle the 2023 Australian Little Athletics Championships.

Representing New South Wales for the second straight year, Jemma picked up a bronze medal in discus with an outstanding throw of 36.21m.

But it isn’t just discus that this former dancer is a star in, the Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre member is also quite accomplished in the thrilling sport of javelin.

Jemma, who is the latest Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Junior Sports Star, took up javelin after watching her older brother Toby throw.

“Because Toby was throwing, I threw as well. I did sprint training but wasn’t very good at it,” she said.

“I probably knew I was good at javelin when

At the State Track and Field Championships, held at Sydney Olympic Park earlier this year, Jemma took out bronze in the U14 javelin event with a personal best throw of 37.58m.

“I came third in the State. I wish I threw further but I threw a PB, so I was happy with that,” Jemma said.

To help Jemma take her throwing to the next level, the Year 8 Caroline Chisholm College student receives private coaching on the side. She also gets plenty of pointers from her brother, who himself is turning heads in the sport.

“Toby is good… I look up to him a lot actually,” she said.

“I obviously want to beat him one day, I want to throw further than him but he’s always there to help me. He gives me tips of what to do and stuff.”

Jemma Camilleri’s Junior Sports Star Award is all thanks to sponsor St Marys Leagues Club.

If you or you know someone who has achieved in their chosen sport, send in your nomination to Penrith Valley Sports Foundation.

Nomination forms are available at www. pvsf.org.au.

Injuries cruel first season

Penrith

keen to finish season on a high but admit Finals now out of reach

she’s too pregnant and I wasn’t going to play her anymore.”

tery is remaining positive about the remainder of the season.

Injuries may cruel Penrith from reaching the playoffs in their debut season of the NBL1 East women’s competition but, despite all the setbacks, they are determined to finish the year on a high.

As the second half of the season gets underway, Penrith have well and truly experienced it all over the opening 10 rounds.

Not only has it been a challenge finding their feet in the top women’s basketball league in the state, but they’ve had to do it missing five key players to season-ending injuries.

Speaking with the Weekender, Panthers coach Bernie Slattery joked he “managed to destroy the whole women’s program in one go”.

“We’ve had a bit of a topsy turvy ride with injuries – we’ve lost five players with season-ending injuries,” he said.

“We’ve had two ACLs, a torn calf, a torn meniscus and a punctured lung – you name it! Plus, we had one girl just finish up because

WNBL star and Penrith junior Tahlia Tupaea has been the biggest casualty, with the 25-yearold suffering a torn calf in the early stages of the season. Tupaea only managed five games before succumbing to the lower leg problem.

While Tupaea is tracking well in rehab, she’s unlikely to suit up for Penrith again this season as she focuses on her representative duties with New Zealand.

“Tahlia has New Zealand representation on her plate in late June – the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup – she’s trying to rehab to be ready for that tournament,” Slattery said.

“She’s also contracted to play in the New Zealand National League as well as in the WNBL for the Canberra Capitals, so I can’t see her playing for Penrith again this season. I’m sure she would like to, but she has bigger fish to fry.”

Penrith are currently sitting in 13th place on the NBL1 East ladder, with three wins and nine losses to their name. Despite their less than impressive record, Slat-

Around The Grounds

RUGBY UNION: Following last weekend’s bye, the Penrith Emus will return to the field this Saturday afternoon in Round 7 of the John I Dent Cup. The last-placed and winless Emus will face the Tuggeranong Vikings at Viking Park.

BASKETBALL: Penrith’s women’s team have now lost three straight games, blown away by the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 114-61 in Round 10 of the NBL1 East competition. For the sixth consecutive week, local junior Meg Jefferson led the way with 22 points and five rebounds. Meanwhile, Penrith’s men’s team have lost back-to-back games, going down to the lowly Sea Eagles 81-69. Once again, Caleb Fetui-Fa’amoe top scored for the Panthers with 20 points, six rebounds and two steals. Both teams will take on the Sutherland Sharks this Saturday at Sutherland Basketball Stadium.

BASKETBALL: Congratulations to St Dominic’s College’s Senior basketball team, crowned champions of the NSW All Schools Basketball competition last week. Dominant throughout the two-day tournament, the Senior team did an amazing jobs winning the Grand Final against MacKillop Port Macquarie 39-26. The school’s Intermediate team also did exceptionally well, however missed out on a spot in the Finals by two points.

NETBALL: Following last week’s rest, Panthers Netball will return to the court this week to battle the UTS Randwick Sparks in Round 9 of Netball NSW Premier League competition. At the halfway mark of the season, the Panthers Opens team are currently sitting in sixth spot on the ladder, while the Under 23’s team are a position higher in fifth.

“Our squad has now minimised somewhat due to the injuries, but a lot of our young local players are getting tremendous opportunities and doing really well with them,” he said.

“The competition is extremely strong, the standard of the teams has risen dramatically this year. Many of the teams have got foreign import players or have recruited WNBL players.

“The standard is really high and it’s all that we hoped for and more.”

Penrith will look to bounce back from last weekend’s shocking 53-point loss to Manly-Warringah when they hit the road on Saturday to battle the Sutherland Sharks in Round 11.

Slattery said he’s confident his young and brave side can finish the season strong.

“We’ve hit a spot where all these kids are having to play above their paygrade, so if we can win two or three more games, we’ll be happy I would think,” he said.

NETBALL: Giants Netball are one of the hottest teams in the league, racking up back-to-back wins with a 70-64 victory over the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Round 10 of the Super Netball competition. The Giants showcased their fighting spirit in the contest, orchestrating a remarkable comeback to defeat the Lightning by six-points at Ken Rosewall Arena. The Giants will be back home this Sunday afternoon to play the Queensland Firebirds.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have been belted by the Parramatta Goannas 105-40 in Round 7 of the AFL Sydney Platinum Division competition. Rams player Zac Lange booted a team-high three goals in the huge defeat. The Rams will enjoy the bye this weekend. Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes have won two straight, too good for the Macquarie University Goannas 28-10 in Round 7 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division Two competition. The Ramettes will look to keep their winning run alive when they face the Newtown Breakaways this Saturday morning at Greygums Oval.

AFL: The GWS Giants are in real danger of missing the Finals already, beaten by St Kilda 92-80 in Round 10 of the AFL competition. The Giants have only won three games all year under new coach Adam Kingsley, and things don’t look like improving any time soon with a tough draw ahead. The Giants will travel to GMHBA Stadium on Saturday afternoon to take on the Geelong Cats.
