A

ffectionately known as ‘Spider-Man Jake’ by his family, four-year-old Jake Carroll, of Cambridge Park, has been putting up the fight of his life since the day he was born. Jake was given a 10 per cent chance to live after he was diagnosed at birth with Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome, where the heart is unable to pump enough blood and doesn’t form properly. His mum, Candice Jones, has been looking on the bright side ever since his diagnosis. “I was told at five and a half months about the deformity with his heart and I was initially told to abort,” she said. “They never do a heart procedure on a baby unless they are over six pounds, and Jake came out six pounds, one ounce – I believe it was meant to be.” After spending the first four months of his life in hospital, Jake went back in for another surgery and was then able to come home. “It was really scary having him home for the first time, especially without a nurse there all the time,” Ms Jones said. November last year was supposed to be Jake’s final surgery and what everyone thought to be, one more battle left to fight. “After that surgery Jake was able to breathe properly and run around like a normal child without turning blue in the face,” Ms Jones said. But things took an unfortunate twist. Story continues on » p. 6

Parking Crisis

Blame game over station parking Parking spots closed again without notice this week as frustration grows for local commuters DALE DRINKWATER

ommuters are unlikely to be told in advance when car spaces at Penrith Station will be closed for electrical work, with Penrith Council and Connect Infrastructure at loggerheads over who is responsible to notify the public. The Weekender revealed last week that over 80 car spaces at Penrith Station’s Belmore Street car park were closed off from the public for three days without public notification, as commuters scrambled to snatch up the remaining spots. This week, it happened again, with some 20 spots out of action on Tuesday morning. Connect Infrastructure Project Manager, Nathan Marshall, said as it’s a Council car park, he believes it is up to Council to inform the community when car parks close – not the contractor. “Council is the landowner. We told them that our work would be between 8pm and 5am but we would be blocking spots from [8pm] Sunday night to 5am Thursday morning,” he said. “We are a contractor to Endeavour Energy, we just notify the landowner... it’s not a part of our contract. We do noti-

C

Lucky dip: Commuters aren’t given advance warning when parking spots at Penrith Station will be closed fications for electrical outages, but not car parks out.” Mr Marshall said they needed to block the car parks off so cars were not parked in the job zone at any time. “If we turn up at night and there are cars in our job zone then we are unable to do our work,” he said. The work is clearly required but the lack of notice, information or alternative park-

ing arrangements is what is frustrating commuters. Penrith Council said they did give Connect Infrastructure a permit to undertake night works last week and cordon off the spaces, but only from 8pm to 5am. “No permit was given for closure during the day and this would have required public notification from the applicant,” a spokesperson said.

“Council has advised Endeavour Energy that there will be no approval for any future works in Council managed car parks, unless they and their contractors erect relevant signage and commuters and station staff are given reasonable notice.” Council said the recent permit for Belmore Street car park had strict conditions that the operator was to notify those who may be affected in advance.

Let’s just ban everything, or we could ban banning everything Anyone who reads this column regularly would know that one of my pet hates is petitions that aim to restrict our freedom of choice. What gets me even more angry is when the organisations targeted by the petitions don’t have the guts to stand up for themselves and for what the majority of people think. Last year it was Woolworths and “that” t-shirt, and Target’s sale of ‘Grand Theft Auto’, among others. There’s people out there with too much time on their hands who think that owning a keyboard and a social media account means they can tell us all what we can and can’t buy. The latest small-minded campaign comes from 23-year-old Laura Pintur, a marketing coordinator who thinks Coles and Woolworths should stop selling Zoo Weekly magazine. Zoo Weekly is a men’s magazine and while I’m not a regular reader of the publication, if you’ve ever seen its cover shots, it’s pretty obvious what’s inside. “I’m a 23 year-old woman trying to navigate my way around a culture that is surrounded with porn, sexualisation and objectification of women and enjoy healthy, respect-based relationships with men,” Ms Pintur wrote, encouraging people to sign her petition. “But how is that possible when so many of them are being fed a diet of porn and violence including in magazines like Zoo Weekly read by thousands of boys every week?” She added: “What chance does my generation, the generations above me and the generation below me who are growing up and being brainwashed to believe what is endorsed in this magazine is normal and OK, actually have?” Comedian and radio presenter Jo Stanley joined the outrage earlier month, writing an article for news.com.au, which I found quite curious, given she herself posed for FHM magazine some time ago.

Cotton wool isn’t the answer

She’s also the same Jo Stanley who posted a picture of herself on Twitter with four topless firemen and wrote: “Great day at the office. Firefighters calendar, raising money and my heart rate, for Westmead Hospital”. Posing for FHM and getting excited about halfnaked firefighters is OK when it’s for charity. My argument here is not necessarily to defend Zoo Weekly. My argument is that trying to play the blame game and pointing the finger at magazines for feeding “a diet of porn and violence” to boys is just so small-minded and out of touch. I admit that as a curious teenager, I purchased the odd edition of FHM and Ralph magazine – in fact, I recently found them in a box in the garage! But combined with that little secret reading, I had parents and teachers who taught me about responsibility and respect. You see, the greatest influence of how you act as a human being will come from those around you. And if Ms Pintur and Ms Stanley really believe that magazines have such a huge influence in how a young person grows up, then perhaps their arguments are incorrectly placed. After all, female-targeted magazines like Dolly and Cosmopolitan have much higher readerships than Zoo Weekly. On Cosmopolitan’s website this week, I can read about “the 14 kinds of boners guys experience”, “grapefuit blowjobs” and there’s even a section called “what men want”. Not to mention the plethora of other magazines that judge women on what they wear, how they look, how skinny or fat they are and who they’re hooking up with this week. If you’re going to get on the high horse and demand Zoo gets banned, then let’s make sure magazines like that are added to the list. Or we could accept that our kids have curious minds, and all just try to provide the best influences, examples and advice to our children as possible. Cotton wool isn’t the solution.

Councillor John Thain organises petition against shopping centre closure DALE DRINKWATER

Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa a

@daledrinkwater

enrith Councillor John Thain is leading a 2500-strong army who have petitioned against the complete closure of the Cranebrook Village Shopping Centre while it is being redeveloped. The Weekender previously revealed the developers of the Cranebrook Village Shopping Centre upgrade had changed their minds against a staged redevelopment as outlined in their Development Application (DA) to Penrith City Council. In a Council meeting on Monday, Cr Thain presented the signatures of around 2500 people who fear a complete redevelopment of the centre means they will lose services for longer than necessary. “2500 citizens are concerned they won’t have access to the basic necessities of life,” he said. “I would like [the petition] to be passed on to the developer, so he knows the residents of Cranebrook are not happy.” The petition included signatures from residents of surrounding suburbs, who wrote the decision to demolish the whole centre at once is “unfair and unjust” and is “too long without shops”. “What they’re calling for is that the developer go back to what was originally

proposed and that was a staged development,” Cr Thain said. The approved DA was to undertake the development in two stages, one stage adding a Woolworths in the current car park and, when that was done, to demolish the specialty stores as stage two. The developer, AusPacific Property Group, previously said because Cranebrook IGA decided to leave earlier, the whole project, including stage two, could

be done at once, shortening construction time to 44 weeks instead of two years. The concern is that locals will have no services at all for 44 weeks, instead of limited services for two years. AusPacific had previously indicated they intend on running a bus service between Cranebrook and Jordan Springs Shopping Centre for locals. An exact closing date for the centre is not known.

Police issue warning after fake money found at charity event

Medical costs skyrocket as Jake continues his brave health battle

JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

olice allegedly found several fake $50 notes circulating at the Relay for Life fundraiser earlier this month, prompting them to put out yet another warning about the scam. At least five $50 notes were passed between the stalls and surrounding shops over the course of the fundraiser at Howell Oval in Penrith. Police say the people behind the scam are developing new techniques to attempt to disguise the bills to look like the real thing. However, there are still ways for you to identify if the note is a fake.

P

On each note there is a small white circle with the shape of a star in it. When held up to the light, it is transparent but a fake one will be coloured in and you will not be able to see the other side. You can also rub and feel the note in between your fingers. If it’s fake it will feel very different to a real one and the print will also start to come off. Police warn to check all notes that are passed through businesses to ensure you are getting real money and contact them if you are concerned. Police said the serial numbers QT06779455, VK0605109, BD06556864 and VK06051366 were identified as allegedly fake numbers on notes.

Shot fired into Werrington County home Police are appealing for information after reports of a shot fired into a home in Werrington County, believed to have occurred during the last week. Police have been told residents of a home on Henry Lawson Avenue moved from the premises on Sunday, May 17. About 2.30pm on Tuesday, May 26 two of the previous tenants returned to collect belongings when what appeared to be a bullet hole was located through the front window of the home.

Officers attached to St Marys Local Area Command were notified and attended, establishing a crime scene. As inquiries continue, police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. Initial investigations have led police to believe the incident was not targeted. If you have any information, contact police on 1800 333 000.

Story continued from » p. 1 Only a few weeks after that surgery, Jake was back in hospital and had been diagnosed with the rare disease of Plastic Bronchitis, subsequently putting Jake on a breathing machine for the rest of his life. “Just before Easter, the entire family was brought up to Jake’s room by the doctor after Jake’s liver and kidneys were beginning to fail,” Ms Jones said. “We were told he wasn’t going to make it. He turned it around though and pulled through – he is a massive fighter.” Jake’s two sisters, Harmony, eight, and Destiny, five, just want to be able to play with their baby brother. But as Jake’s fight for life continues, costs associated with his care continue to escalate. After finding a life size Spider-Man for sale on a Facebook site, Ms Jones got in contact with a woman who, after viewing Ms Jones’ profile, offered the Spider-Man for free as well as the organisation of a fundraiser. “Liliana restored my faith in humanity by generously offering to throw a fundraiser for Jake to raise funds for his machinery costs and medical bills after seeing our situation,” Ms Jones said. “She has been so lovely and calls every couple of days to check in on Jake.” The fundraiser is on Sunday, July 19 at

The Carroll family the Ettamogah Hotel in Kellyville. For more information on the fundraiser and Jake’s story you can visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ events/861076393966094.

Man dead after single-vehicle crash at Luddenham Police are now investigating after a man died this week in a single vehicle car accident. The man was driving a Holden Rodeo utility when, it appears, the car left the carriageway and struck a power pole on The Northern Road near Dwyer Road in Luddenham. At about 4.40pm on Monday, May 25, emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a motor vehicle crash. The man, aged 51, was unable to be revived by emergency services. Police from Green Valley Local Area Command will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner outlining

elcome to the world of 3D printing where the possibilities are endless. Local business Torstar, which deals in corporate business and educational supplies, is now home to Penrith’s first state-of-the-art 3D printer. Torstar received their first 3D printer, the $12,100 MakerBot Replicator, this week and soon they’ll be showing off the amazing benefits of 3D printing to consumers as well as selling their own. 3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. On Tuesday, the Weekender witnessed a nut and bolt be created in precisely 52 minutes, all made out of a filament roll of biodegradable cornstarch.

To facilitate an independent review of the eagerly awaited Environmental Impact Statement, Penrith Council is pooling resources with neighbouring councils and contributing $60,000 towards an expert review. This will consider a range of factors including the environmental, social and economic aspects of developing and operating the airport. Among those who spoke against the airport at Council on Monday was former Lindsay MP Jackie Kelly, who wants Council to approach the Government with a ‘shopping list’ of infrastructure projects to be completed before the airport. Cr Maurice Girotto said the airport needs to not just bring smart jobs, but logistics and warehousing too, and is concerned that too much emphasis is being placed on the airport to drive the economy.

taff at Nepean Hospital will be able to issue fines to visitors who flout no smoking laws. Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District CEO, Kay Hyman said smoking is a major health concern to the hospital’s visitors and, as a result, staff will be able to hand out fines to those caught smoking on hospital grounds. “We have been implementing a program of educating our staff, visitors and patients about not smoking on our hospital grounds, she said. “Training of hospital staff to issue fines that will be enforced by the State Debt Recovery office is also underway. “Our message could not be clearer – it is against the law to smoke anywhere on hospital grounds and fines of up to $300 apply. Ahead of Sunday’s World No Tobacco Day, Penrith’s public institutions have made a united stand against smoking in public places. Smoke free environments have been established at Nepean Hospital, Western Sydney Institute of TAFE and Penrith City Council facilities, who all joined forces

at Nepean Hospital on Monday to raise awareness of the areas. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said all Council facilities, including playgrounds, have a smoke free policy and, although they don’t have fines attached, there is a possibility to do so in the future. “Council has adopted the stance to educate the community rather than fine and we are seeing smokers doing the right thing voluntarily, he said. “Fines are a last resort, but there’s empirical evidence that smoking is bad for you so maybe you’ve got to be unkind to be kind in some respects. Education campuses such as the University of Western Sydney and Western Sydney TAFE are joining the initiative. Western Sydney TAFE’s Manager of Workforce Capability, Louise Turnbull said both the Nepean and Penrith TAFE Campuses are already smoke free. “It’s really important not just for staff but for students to promote a smoke free culture, she said. “We’ve got 50,000 students in the Western Sydney Institute, so it’s really important that we model and encourage good and healthy behaviour around smoking. What do you think? The State Government has introduced a series of reforms for NSW Local Government called Fit for the Future. The focus is on making sure local councils demonstrate an ability to meet a series of strong financial and sustainability benchmarks by 2019-20. Penrith Council began a ‘future proofing’ exercise before the State Government introduced the Fit for the Future reform. Penrith’s future proofing exercise involved developing a long-term financial plan, new asset management strategies and a review of all services. This not only aligns with the Office of Local Government requirements, but goes further. It looks at how we position our investments to deliver long term income, whether we have the right assets in the right places, and how we can best position ourselves to take advantage of grants and other opportunities as they arise. There has been some discussion around councils merging. Penrith

Council is not a council that will need to merge with neighbouring councils, it can stand alone. However we are working more strategically with Blue Mountains City Council and Hawkesbury City Council, so we can all be more efficient in our work and provide the best value for our communities. By June 30 this year Penrith Council must make a submission to the Office of Local Government showing how we are Fit for the Future. This means reporting on which indicators Council meets and doesn’t meet, and how Council plans to improve performance across all the criteria over the next five years. Penrith Council’s submission will be available for public comment from June 30 to July 31. For more information about Fit for the Future, Penrith Council’s submission and to register for updates visit www.yoursaypenrith. com.au.

Surfing the NBN: More Penrith suburbs set for fast web access DALE DRINKWATER

lmost 11,000 homes and businesses across 11 Lindsay suburbs will be one step closer to accessing the Government’s National Broadband Network in the coming weeks. Build preparation work such as clearing Telstra’s pits and ducts is now underway, and the pre-construction work will soon be visible in the electorate’s streets. Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said the important milestone for the electorate will see greater certainty for homes and businesses who are preparing for the superfast broadband. “The message for residents is clear – superfast broadband is on its way,” she said. The suburbs that will see the preparations for the National Broadband Network include Cambridge Gardens, Cambridge Park, Cranebrook, Jamisontown, Kingswood, Llandilo, Penrith, South Penrith, Werrington Downs, Agnes Banks and Londonderry. Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull said the announcement of NBN Co’s new construction schedule was delivering on the Government’s promise to get the NBN rollout back on track. “When we came into Government, one of our chief priorities has been to get this

On Friday, governments of all levels joined forces to kick off their ‘Light Years Ahead’ project that will see 10 per cent of the local area’s street lights changed over by May next year. Around 1800 lights in the Penrith LGA will be changed, saving Penrith Council $3.2 million in energy costs over 20 years.

“In carbon emissions that’s equivalent to taking 2300 cars off the road each year and lighting 12,400 Australian homes,” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said. “This project allows us to change around 10 per cent of our street lights, and Council is committed to replace all the street lights over time to reduce our energy consumption by 77 per cent.” Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) indicated that 55 per cent of most Councils’ energy costs are used by street lighting alone, and the rollout of LED lighting across nine participating Councils will save $1.08 million per year.

Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott and Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull with NBN workers rollout done sooner, cheaper for taxpayers and more affordably for consumers,” he said. The NBN Co has almost tripled its fibre network reach that now passes more than 770,000 homes and businesses across the country, with over 420,000 connections to either the fixed line or wireless services. The NBN Co expects that by mid-2016 one in three Australian homes will have work underway in their neighbourhood, or already be able to connect to the NBN. School wants housing ‘buffer zone’ Housing development would see new homes surround Xavier College at Llandilo @daledrinkwater

DALE DRINKWATER

landilo’s Xavier College still stands a chance to stop the development of homes on their back fence that could jeopardise the school’s agricultural facilities. A development application (DA) was submitted to Penrith City Council to subdivide 23 hectares of urban zoned land along Ninth Avenue, Jordan Springs into 215 residential lots, that would surround the college with brand new homes. Xavier College’s Principal Michael Pate addressed a Council meeting to request that a buffer zone be implemented to separate the school from the homes. “My first option was to be against the development but for the best alternative... a fairly large buffer zone would be ideal,” he said. “One of the main aims of Xavier College is to be in harmony of the land, I’m not against housing but... a housing development along the fence line will impact greatly on our students – they won’t be able to kick a ball, have a concert. “We offer agriculture and this requires students to indulge in livestock, sheep, cattle and poultry on our land.

L

Development of this section of land has been deferred after concerns were raised about the future of Xavier College at Llandilo “The space is needed... I’m not prepared to compromise the learning of any student for housing.” Councillor Prue Car recommended to not only defer the development of 15 lots as originally suggested, but also defer all lots between the Northern Road and the eastern boundary of Xavier College. “I had two concerns, one is that Xavier College wasn’t properly consulted... Luddenham: Cyclist kicked in bizarre road incident

Penrith: Man arrested after playing loud music in his car

Police are appealing for information after a cyclist was assaulted in Luddenham. On Sunday, May 23, the 59-year-old cyclist was riding his bike along the Northern Road with another male cyclist. At about 10am, 500 metres from the intersection of Elizabeth Drive, a group of motorcyclists approached the two men, all travelling in the same direction. It is alleged that one of the motorcyclists, described as wearing black clothing and riding a Harley Davidson, rode closely to the 59-year-old and kicked him in the leg. He fell onto the road, suffering cuts to his face and body, and was assisted by fellow cyclists. The man was treated at the scene after the motorcyclists failed to stop.

A man was arrested and charged over the weekend after allegedly ignoring the several warnings police gave him about the loud music he was playing in his car. At about 7.15am on Saturday, May 23, police attended the residence in Hope Street in Penrith after a complaint about the noise coming from the property. The 30-year-old man, who was sitting in his Red BMW, was allegedly playing music from his car stereo when police gave him a warning. Police were called back just before 8.00am when the man was still playing the music. Police had to return to the property again at 8.15am, 8.30am and again just before 9.00am when the man was finally arrested. Police then charged the man.

Oxley Park: Loaded shotgun found during car search

Jordan Springs: Perfume stolen from pharmacy

A man has been charged after he was allegedly found in possession of a loaded shotgun in Oxley Park. On Monday, May 25, police allege they stopped a utility on Braddon Street in Oxley Park at about 7.00am. Finding cause to search the vehicle, police allegedly located a loaded pump-action shotgun in the passenger footwell. The 23-year-old male passenger was placed under arrest and taken to Penrith Police Station. He was later transported to Nepean Hospital, suffering a medial condition. After he was released from hospital, police charged him with a range of offences. He faced court earlier this week.

Police are warning against buying branded perfume online after two women allegedly stole a significant amount of bottles from a pharmacy in Jordan Springs. On Sunday, May 24, two women, a 44-yearold and a 39-year-old, allegedly walked into the pharmacy at about 11.30am. After they left the store, police were called and after viewing the CCTV footage they attended a residence where one woman was arrested and charged. Police were unable to recover the items. Police ask if anyone notices Calvin Klein, Nicki Minaj or Jean Claud perfume up for sale to contact Penrith Police. The woman is due to appear in court at a later date.

real question is what is Council proposing to do about the problem? As Council states (Mayor’s Message in Western Weekender) that a Parking Strategy has been in place since 2011 and they have been monitoring the condition of the ramps for some time, after four years what is the strategy? Penrith’s development has been all ‘urban sprawl’ and means people have to rely on their cars to travel to work, public transport and shopping. I disagree with the assertion that providing more car parks creates more traffic, if a commuter can’t park, then they have to be dropped off and picked up later from the station – which creates double the traffic load! It is disappointing that Penrith Council is ‘chasing its tail’ on this problem, whereas they should have been reactive to finding and implementing solutions well before now. ROBBIE MARTIN, VIA EMAIL

Regarding your article about the lack of train station parking, you should also include Emu Plains Station (Penrith’s parking mess, Western Weekender May 22). I catch the 8.10am train regularly and the parking is already non existent with cars parking at the end of the rows which is illegal and makes it difficult for drivers to reverse their car at the end of the day. The parking area is woefully inadequate as people come from areas such as Glenmore Park and Lower Mountains to use this station. Also in regards to track work, last weekend was the first weekend of Vivid and there was no trains between Lithgow and Blacktown! This happens so frequently and is maddening when we are all encouraged to use public transport and not drive cars into the city. Sydney Trains should find out what is happening around Sydney. I can’t believe their ignorance. LYNNE EGAN, VIA EMAIL

Winter warning

Health

Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliott has urged householders to ‘keep looking when cooking’ after it was revealed almost 50 per cent of house fires start in the kitchen. Firefighters respond to about 1230 house fires between June and September each year – an average of 102 a week – and almost half of those start in the kitchen. “It can take just three minutes for a kitchen fire to take hold but only seconds to prevent one,” Mr Elliott said. FRNSW Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Brown said nine people have sadly died in house fires in NSW since January this year and urged householders to remain vigilant. “People need to be attentive in the kitchen and throughout their home this winter,” he said.

The frightening statistics are only getting worse and often parents don’t know what to do. The advice Ms Smart gives to parents is to always keep their child’s best interest in mind, which will help the parents realise they are doing the right thing. “Sometimes the decision we make for our child can be tough but if we constantly have their future in mind it will almost always make the decision easier for you because you have that end result in mind,” Ms Smart said. The Werrington Community Cottage that was damaged by fire in December 2013 will now be demolished, and its management committee will be formally dissolved. The cost to repair the building was quoted at $66,000 and the cost to demolish was $56,000 thus Council decided to discontinue the cottage and users were relocated to nearby neighbourhoood facilities. Former Werrington Cottage users could meet at the same time as they normally would have and at the same cost as the Werrington Cottage. All records, books and property has been returned to Council, and any funds remaining from a cash settlement will be redirected into other facilities in the Werrington area. The service of the committee members will be recognised through a morning or afternoon tea with a presentation of certificates. Penrith City Council has accepted $365,000 from the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to upgrade more shared-use paths in the Penrith Local Government Area. The funding offer over 2015 to 2016 is a continuation of the shared-use paths projects and is 100 per cent funded by the RMS with no expectation for Council to contribute funding. The funding will cover three projects around Penrith,

with $120,000 to design 600m of path on Jane Street between Castlereagh Road and Penrith Railway Station that will include a signalised intersection at Westfield. A further $165,000 will go toward relocating street lights on Jane Street to accommodate for future path construction and $80,000 will go toward the planning and design of 1km of Nepean Avenue, Penrith, for a pedestrian and cycle link. Both Jane Street and Nepean Avenue are considered as priority cycle ways. Council has just accepted the 100 per cent funding offer from the RMS under the National Blackspots Program at a total of $400,000. The five local road projects were previously announced by Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott in April, and included upgrading median island stop treatments, pedestrian refuges, one central median island and a single lane roundabout. In addition, a further $301,000 has been offered by the RMS for two Safer Road Program projects in Mulgoa and Penrith. The safer roads program will install warning signs and remove hazards, and is also 100 per cent funded by the RMS. Council has recognised the total $701,000 will make a huge impact on traffic safety and will reduce accidents on local roads.

Family Fun Day this Sunday aims to promote sport and other activities for people with a disability DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

horndale Foundation is hosting their very first ‘Have a Go’ Family Fun Day on Sunday, May 31. The free day to promote sport, recreation and leisure activities for people with a disability will also showcase the new premises to the public that officially opened just last month. Thorndale Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Belinda Colombrita said the day is not just about Thorndale’s services, but about bringing people together in an inclusive environment. “It’s an opportunity for families to have a look at other services that are available in the community, but mainly the day is about having fun,” she said. “Everyone is welcome, it’s something everyone can come along to, there will be lots of organised service groups coming along.” There will be activities and displays on the day that people can join, including over 35 stalls and a DJ to give the day a party atmosphere. Don’t miss out on the free sausage sizzle that will be provided for lunch, to get everyone ready for a big day of ball games, face painting, a petting zoo, wheelchair sports and arts and crafts. Families, carers and people with disabilities are encouraged to attend. People that need support are urged to have their carers with them at all times. If you would like to attend the free event on Sunday, May 31 from 11am-2pm at Thorndale Foundation or for more general information, call 4734 9417.

Weekly shop is now a thing of the past Longer opening hours and our desire for fresh produce is driving more regular visits to supermarkets JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

ustralians are taking full advantage of the extended hours of supermarkets and shopping centres, with the traditional weekly family shop becoming a thing of the past. A new study shows we are going through the checkout more than 135 times a year, on average. The latest consumer research from Project Harvest tells us we are shopping almost three times a week. Shoppers have easier access than ever to supermarkets with some open until midnight every day of the week. Another reason for the surge in supermarket visits is the desire to buy fresh produce, with fruit and vegetables taking pride of place in our shopping trolleys. Store Manager of IGA at Kingswood, Richard Wren said there is a lot of competition in the area.

A

“With a lot of competition around, customers have the opportunity to visit more stores and get a variety of groceries,” he said. “I think I probably see many people coming in every day to do their grocery shopping as they might forget items or they just want to get items bit by bit.” The research demonstrates customers are liking the convenience the larger retail chains offer with extended trading hours and larger brand choices but consumers still come back to their local grocers and independent retailers too, with greater sentimental value playing a key part. The ‘grab and go’ option is becoming widespread as consumers take advantage of major retailers’ opening hours on weekdays and weekends. Does your family still do the traditional once-a-week grocery shop? Or have your habits changed over the years? Email news@westernweekender.com.au or Tweet us @wwpenrith.

How often do you grocery shop and why? Nima Nicholas: “I do grocery shopping a few times a week because I have two kids and I just find I need things.”

David Goodwin: “I shop basically every day. I’ll be out on a lunch break and realise I need something. We also have two kids who need things, or the pets might need more food. It’s great convenience though which makes it easier.”

Debbie Tissington: “I do the oncea-week shop. The only things I get throughout the week are bread and milk.”

Melina Walters: “I can’t carry a lot since I don’t drive so I come every day pretty much. It also gives me a chance to see the specials which will help me not to go over my budget.”

Creative business idea earns national praise JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

enrith business Creative Fringe has been placed on Anthill Online’s 2015 SMART 100 Awards list, an online index that rewards innovative businesses, services and products. Having opened just over a year ago, Creative Fringe provides a dynamic shared office space for consultants, small business owners, freelancers and commuters to co-work and network harmoniously. Run by the team from White River Design, a local graphic design company, owner and founder, Debbie O’Connor said the space helps people come out of their shell. “I love to see people flourish once they come into this space to work,” Ms O’Connor said. “People start to connect and do things differently but they do it in a way that’s benefiting them. It’s wonderful.” White River Design, which also works out of the space, has a ‘big book of ideas’ where employees write down any ideas they have for the business. “Our web developer had been following anthillonline.com and saw the list and the opportunity so she wrote the idea in the book,” Ms O’Connor said.

P

“After we entered the competition we made the list which just goes to show that there are no stupid ideas or impossible goals.” The business works towards providing a comfortable space for anyone with a tough weekly commute, effectively giving them the opportunity to network with other businesses as well. It’s also often a better alternative than working from home. “There are so many distractions at home that make people lose focus as well as motivation,” Ms O’Connor said. “Running your business from Creative Fringe elevates the perception of being a home-based business, outside the home.” Ms O’Connor was able to grow her business after she won the small business category at the Champions of the West awards night and was given a $10,000 grant. Going from five to 16 desks, Creative Fringe has a variety of people in the office each day. For more information about the concept or to rent a desk from Creative Fringe you can visit their website www.thecreativefringe.com.au. The winners for the 2015 SMART 100 Awards were drawn on Wednesday, May 27.

ith over 250 people each year coming through the doors of Regentville’s Fire and Rescue Station on their Open Day, firefighters are again welcoming the public – all in the name of charity and safety. Fire and Rescue NSW have partnered with the NSW Kids In Need Foundation, which runs the largest open house fundraising event, providing donations to six different charities. Fire and Rescue Regentville will be accepting donations to help children in need as the public walks through the doors. “We are ready to shake the tins for charity,” Station Commander, Philip Nightingale said. Happening this Saturday, May 30, a range of free activities will be on offer

including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and important fire safety presentations as we head into winter. Firefighters from Regentville will also be on hand to offer advice on installing smoke alarms, changing the batteries and preparing a home fire escape plan. “With winter approaching, Open Day is a timely opportunity to talk to the experts about home fire safety,” Mr Nightingale said. “Winter is the worst time of the year for home fires, with 60 per cent of all house fires occurring in the cooler months of May to September.” Children will be able to see fire engines and firefighting equipment up close on the day. Fire and Rescue Regentville will be open from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, May 30. The station is located at 2-6 Jeanette Street, Regentville.

BUSINESS TIPS

How marketing has changed and evolved over the years

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC

I

am sure you have heard from business experts that your business should be adaptable and versatile. If those experts are referring to being able to quickly evolve to meet changing needs in your industry, then this is good advice to heed. But there are some of us who interpret this as needing to provide a diverse range of products or services in order to gain enough customers. For example, when I started my graphic design business, there was almost no type of print design work that I would reject. I was doing everything from business cards to wedding invitations and my marketing materials covered pretty much everything I could think of! But I soon found that by narrowing my niche, I gained more clients. Think about how you seek expertise: if you are looking for an accountant for your business, you are more likely to retain a firm that specialises in small business, than one that focuses on tax for individuals. Or if you were looking for someone to make a wedding cake, you are unlikely

to choose someone who creates children’s cakes. You want the experience that comes with the understanding of a specific product or service. So how do you work out what to focus on in your business? One way to help this decision is to choose the areas that you most like to work on. You are going to be much more motivated to improve your skills and become the best at what you do if it is something you actually like doing! The passion you have for your niche will be evident to clients via the way you promote and the manner in which you engage with them about the product or service. You should combine this with researching the needs of your clients, to find out what they may need. You will begin to establish yourself as an expert, and are likely to find that people are happy to pay more because they know they are getting quality results. Have a great weekend – see you next week!

I

sn’t it amazing (scary?) the way marketing is evolving? I give advice on a daily basis which helps businesses be where their potential customers are and it is so interesting to reflect on how the advice has changed over the years. The business owners that are willing to adapt to the modern way of marketing see the benefits for themselves. Marketing methods have made major developments over the last 10 years, as web presence and social media have continued to influence consumer behaviour. Focusing on your customer’s needs and wants is largely the key to having a successful business. While you can’t necessarily meet all of the customer’s wants due to cost constraints and profit margins, you can certainly adjust your marketing to influence customers into seeing why your product meets all of their needs and gets them closer to their wants than anybody else. Some changes that we have seen in marketing are: • Move from Product focused to Consumer focused: Businesses focused their marketing around

their own product like brand promotion, campaigns revolving around the product. But today it’s more Consumer focused and how offerings can fulfil their needs/wants. The thought earlier was that the marketers own the brand, message and use to shout out loud to potential customers, but the scenario is different now as both brand and message can be controlled by customers, and their feedback or recommendation can mean so much to businesses. Use of technology and Internet has changed the way businesses market today, and now businesses can more easily reach a global market. The way people communicate has changed. Earlier every marketer used either print ads, newspapers or calls to generate leads but now marketing plans are much more involved and advanced, not to mention the complex algorithms we have to learn. Measuring and metrics have been changed in a significant way, today we measure everything. Today we need to know what we market, and to whom we are marketing to.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

The early days of Emu Plains Jade Aliprandi discovers the remarkable history of a part of Emu Plains that holds some incredible secrets and played a major role in the early development of the local area... St Paul’s Church is currently sitting on the kitchen garden and part of the prison quarters. Photo: Penrith City Library

I

n the early 1800s Emu Plains was home to thousands of convicts over a 13-year period at what was then known as The Emu Plains Government Agricultural Establishment or The Emu Plains Prison Farm. Starting out as an experiment, Governor Macquarie decided on establishing the prison farm based on the idea that it was to be used as a way to give employment to the servants and convicts who would then secure additional supplies of grain for the public service. There was to be a superintendent of the establishment, the first in charge was former convict, Richard Fitzgerald. He was apparently given a salary of 100 pounds sterling per annum, according to the Department of Corrective Services documents. A letter written by a man by the name of M.M. Jean Rene Constance Quoy explains some features of the farm from when he visited after it had just been established. “The farm featured 25 huts where 140 men were grouped under the direction of an overseer, who was also a convict,” he wrote.

“By 1820 the area measured 2000 acres, with 800 cleared of timber and separated into large fields and 500 acres under crops.” The farm is described as ‘agricultural richness’ playing an important economic role in the Nepean district, providing a source for the sale of goods, the employment of clearing gangs and the individual assignment of convicts to local settlers. In 1830, the establishment was reduced and then shut down in 1832 under the guidance of Lord Bathurst who, at the time, instructed that all Government farms, except for Norfolk Island and Port Macqaurie, be sold. The Emu Plains Prison Farm was broken up into lots with only a few reserves kept by the Government. A Broadside from 1835 describes the convict conditions at the prison establishment explaining they suffered with their living and working conditions. Cutting through mountains to form new roads, blasting rocks, cutting trees up by the roots and burning off grass were all part of the tasks given to the convicts. There was little chance of escape as they

were all monitored by a military guard day and night as well as having to wear irons on both legs. At night they were locked up in small wooden houses that contained about a dozen sleeping places. The houses have been described as 7ft by 4ft in area and roughly 8ft high. The Nepean River separated the farm from the free settlement at Castlereagh and Regentville as well as the influences of liquor and other temptations. The river was considered a natural barrier in encouraging the prisoners, those who weren’t chained, to remain at the farm. It is said that the men were relatively free in their movements around the station and were only chained when they had been charged with an offence. It was reported that on September 25, 1823, two convicts attempted to run away from the farm and cross the river. One man, by the name of Thomas Skidmore, was unable to swim at the time and instead floated with the current for some distance before drowning. The other man, Thomas Warren, was unable to save him.

After convicts served around two years at the Emu Plains Prison Farm, they were assigned mostly to settlers to work as agricultural labourers. Over the 13 years of the Emu Plains Prison Farm there were six superintendents and well over 20 overseers. The farm was resurrected again in 1914 with about 107 acres for the prisoners to work on and, in 1916, it was known as a Place of Detention. In 1949 the Emu Plains Prison Farm Place of Detention was proclaimed Her Majesty’s Training Centre, Emu Plains. Between 1951 and 1957 the prisoners huts were rebuilt and, in 1986, it was providing accommodation for 118 inmates, from the ages of 18 to 23, serving full-time sentences. Currently sitting on the kitchen garden and part of the prison quarters of the original 1819 farm is St Paul’s Church of England (pictured). When the land from the original farm was separated after its closure, work began on the church. Sitting on Short Street, the church was built in 1848 and was extended in 1872.

T

he first time Penrith and Parramatta met in top flight rugby league was May 28, 1967. Tonight, 48 years and one day later, they meet for the 90th time. That first game saw a convincing win by the Eels over the newly formed Panthers at Cumberland Oval. Parramatta won 25-2 and Penrith’s Bob Landers was sent off. Yes, even back then, clashes between Penrith and Parramatta had plenty of emotion involved. It wasn’t until the next year, on July 14 1968, that the Panthers finally overpowered the Eels in a premiership match – winning 14-12 at Penrith Park in front of 13,163 fans. Since then, the Penrith and Parramatta story has taken many twists and turns but one thing hasn’t changed in the near

half century that these teams have been playing each other in first grade rugby league: neither side likes to lose against their neighbour. For the record, Parramatta has won 53 of the 89 clashes so far, Penrith 35 and there’s been one draw. In recent years, the Panthers have had the wood on the Eels, winning six of the last eight clashes and very much starting to emerge as the big brother in a contest that has always seemingly seen the Eels on top and Penrith rated as the underdogs. Penrith’s transformation in recent years, and their good form of late, means they go into tonight’s game against their arch rivals as clear favourites. But despite sitting last on the ladder, nobody should expect Parramatta to lay down in a match against their western Sydney counterparts. If anything, the agony of losing their last two matches in the dying moments – against the Warriors and Rabbitohs – puts them in good stead to step up a level against the Panthers tonight. Penrith’s last hit out was an 11-10 win over

PANTHERS V EELS PEPPER STADIUM FRIDAY, MAY 29 • 7.45PM REFEREES: MATT CECCHIN AND GAVIN MORRIS TV: CHANNEL 9 LIVE 7.45PM RADIO: 2GB / ABC / TRIPLE M Manly and while the bye probably didn’t come at a great time in terms of building momentum, it did allow coach Ivan Cleary and the squad to take a step back, look at the season so far and plan for a strong run during this State of Origin period. For the first time since round two, the Panthers will field their first choice halves combination tonight with Peter Wallace returning from injury to partner Jamie Soward in the halves. Incredibly, the Panthers have used

something like nine halves combinations in 10 games this season – that’s an incredible statistic and to have won five from 10 is outstanding given those circumstances. Ivan Cleary made the point after the game against Manly that the forever changing halves combination was part of the reason Penrith’s attack has looked clunky at times. The return of Wallace won’t necessarily add any flair to Penrith’s attack, but it will fix that issue of the attack being less than fluid. Wallace is a great organiser and his return takes plenty of pressure off Jamie Soward, allowing him to run the plays that drove Penrith’s charge to the top four last season. Like all clashes between these two clubs, expecting the unexpected is a must. However, I do think Penrith has the stronger squad on paper and with the Eels very much out of sorts when it comes to their playmakers, this has the potential to be a game in which the Panthers announce themselves to the rest of the competition.

COACHING CHANGES ON THE CARDS?

Going nowhere: Panthers coach Ivan Cleary

» A major coaching shake-up could be on » The Penrith Panthers are almost certain » The Panthers have a new media manthe cards at the Panthers with Assistant Coach Trent Barrett set for a shock midseason switch to Manly. Fairfax Media is reporting that Barrett is on the verge of joining the Sea Eagles as an assistant to Geoff Toovey, who is under enormous pressure to keep his job. The reports come after rumours emerged that head coach Ivan Cleary was spotted having coffee with a “very influential Manly figure”, sparking speculation that Cleary himself may be in talks with the Sea Eagles. Panthers boss Phil Gould emphatically hosed down the speculation. “Ivan Cleary is very happy at Panthers. He and his coaching team are doing a wonderful job. I see no end point to his current tenure,” Gould told Extra Time. “Ivan still has a lot of work to do at this club. The idea of Ivan coaching anywhere other than Panthers has never been raised.” I understand that Panthers would not stand in the way of Barrett making a mid-season switch to Manly. It is known that Gould does not want to hinder the prospect of one of the club’s junior coaches earning a first grade spot. I’m also of the understanding that Cleary will soon extend his Penrith deal.

to play the New Zealand Warriors in Christchurch next season. The deal was originally set to start this year, leaving just 10 home games at Pepper Stadium, but the final details couldn’t be agreed upon. It’s understood all is now pretty much signed, sealed and delivered and we’ll see the Panthers taking a game to Christchurch in 2016.

» The Masked Panther is an ideas man, if

nothing else. If the Panthers are playing the Warriors in Christchurch next season, the NRL should consider a huge opportunity where the Panthers could play a “New Zealand double header”. For example, the Panthers could play the Warriors in Auckland on a Sunday afternoon, then the same two sides could back it up and play in Christchurch the following Friday or Saturday. It’s a great marketing move that could be sold to Penrith fans as a seven day New Zealand getaway seeing the two major cities – Auckland and Christchurch. It’s a great opportunity to sell travel packages and would be a great novelty that would attract a lot of interest in two otherwise normal club games.

ager, with Evan Sieff starting at the club last week. He replaces Emma Duxbury, who ‘resigned’ earlier this month. The real story surrounding Duxbury’s departure hasn’t been told but the Panthers will be hoping they can finally get some stability in this role – it’s been a revolving door for the last five years.

» Last weekend’s special fundraising

dinner for former Panthers player Ray Blacklock was a huge success. Ray has fallen on very tough times but as always, the rugby league community showed its strength with around 700 people attending the event. Panthers boss Phil Gould declared it the best rugby league function he’s ever attended.

» Jamie Soward has been battling a sore throat and cold this week – but he’ll be right to take on the Eels tonight.

» Phil Gould has denied speculation that he’s considering quitting the Panthers at the end of the year. Gould said he has no intention of leaving the club, and is enjoying his current role.

Soward ready for next gear He’s played two games since returning from injury but playmaker Jamie Soward says he’s still not back to 100 per cent fitness...

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

P

enrith Panthers five-eighth Jamie Soward says he’s happy to be back on the field and believes he should be back to his normal, brilliant self in the next few weeks. Soward returned during Penrith’s loss to the Broncos earlier this month following eight weeks on the sideline recovering from much-needed back surgery. Soward was in such desperate need of surgery that some mornings he struggled to get out of bed and had numbness in his legs. “The back is all healed and I’m very happy with how the surgery went. I think in another game or two I should be back to normal but at the moment the body is feeling good,” Soward told Extra Time. “There’s no discomfort, I think it was just a matter of getting some match fitness back. I had six weeks there where I couldn’t run, I just had to lie down. I got pretty good at PlayStation there for a while.” During Soward’s absence, Penrith only managed two wins from six games – proving just how pivotal the former Origin fiveeighth is to the club’s chances of doing

Jamie Soward is back to his best. Photo: Melinda Jane something in this competition. Many of Soward’s teammates also often spoke of his importance and what he means to the side. “Honestly, I don’t think it was just me being out. We lost a couple of our older guys and the young guys who came in did an outstanding job with the tough situations they were put in,” Soward said. This Friday night Penrith will be looking for back to back wins when they return

home to take on the Parramatta Eels. The Battle of the West blockbuster always draws a huge crowd to Penrith Stadium, with players, this week, finding it hard to contain their excitement. “The buzz around the sheds this morning is something else,” Soward said. “It’s a really nice vibe around town at the moment too. I think the excitement of getting players back and a Friday night game brings that.”

F THERE IS NO BETTER BATTLE

riday night at Pepper Stadium – is there a better setting for two great rivals to go head-to-head? I have been on both sides of the fence for the Battle of the West, where bragging rights are up for grabs, and the atmosphere is always something special. The Eels don’t look too flash at the moment, very inconsistent, but they can bring out a good game every now and then, which makes me a bit nervous. In the last five years there have been some epic battles. A couple of golden point finishes spring to mind which have the diehard fans on the edge of their seat and the coaches pulling their hair out. You can pretty much throw the form guide out the window when it comes to the Penrith vs Parramatta game. Both teams have a burning desire to do whatever it takes to win this one. Turn your minds back to round 19, 2011, with both teams struggling for form. It was Nathan Hindmarsh’s 300th NRL game and we got to play party poopers. Sorry Hindy! We traded tries early with both teams desperate for a win. 12-all at half time said it all. Jarryd Hayne broke the game open with some brilliant touches setting up a couple of tries. In the back of my mind I thought, ‘We can’t let these blokes run away with this one’. Then Lachlan Coote came up with a game-changing hit against the run of play and set up Dave Simmons for his second try. Inspirational stuff which lifted the whole team! Of course the Eels weren’t done yet – scoring off a

The Panthers and Eels in action in 2014. Photo: Melinda Jane nothing grubber which popped into Casey McGuire’s hands. The score was 22-16 to the Eels. Then came one of the greatest finishes I’ve been involved with. We charged down the ball and forced a turnover with 15 seconds to go. They thought they had won it. With just two seconds left and desperate to score we threw the ball around with no real structure, just looking for space. The ball went from one side of the field to the other and ended up in Michael Jennings’ hands. With some fancy footwork and a kick, Lachlan Coote dived on the loose ball and got us back in the game. It was golden point time.

Early in golden point Parramatta had all the ball and missed two shots at a field goal. After 85 minutes of footy we shifted in yardage to find space, Dave Simmons made a half-break and got us in field goal position. Luke Walsh had all the time in the world, and being one of the best field goal experts, he slotted it easily. Great finish to an epic game! Another memorable chapter in Battle of the West history will be written on Friday night. You have no excuses to miss this one. Secure your tickets now, ready your Penrith colours and get pumped for another epic showdown.

Waqa’s wild ride to the top He’s one of the big stars on the rise at Penrith, but Waqa Blake admits that playing first grade is tougher than he ever imagined...

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

R

ookie Panthers centre Waqa Blake has revealed the challenges of playing first grade footy every week. After lighting it up for a number of years in the Holden Cup and NSW Cup – winning premierships in both – the 20-year-old made his highly-anticipated NRL debut back in Round 5 during Penrith’s loss to North Queensland. While injuries to fellow centres Jamal Idris and Dean Whare have kept him in the side each week, finding his feet in the best competition in the world – no matter how much potential you have – hasn’t been easy. “I’m still slowly getting there… the NRL is very physical, very quick and I’m still trying to get used to it. You have to get everything right,” Blake told Extra Time. “When you make the step up, everyone has to do their job – that’s what I’ve found different from NSW Cup to the NRL.” Blake has scored a respectable two tries in six games but could’ve had a third last week against the Sea Eagles if he managed to catch a beautiful pass from Matt Moylan that would’ve put him under the posts.

Waqa Blake playing against the Sharks last month Blake said mistakes feel a lot worse when they happen in first grade. “That could’ve been six points under the posts. It was silly for me to drop it… I did take it hard,” he said. Fortunately for Blake and his transition into the NRL, he has a number of teammates that are more than willing to give him a helping hand. “My opposite centre Dean Whare has been a great mentor. I played with him

in my first game but ever since then he’s been injured,” Blake said. “Everyone’s been a good help, even Jamie Soward out there on the left edge.” While Blake may think he’s finding the adjustment to NRL life difficult, many others in higher places disagree. Earlier this month, Blake made his representative debut when he was selected in Brad Fittler’s City Origin team after just a handful of games.

HART TO HART

WITH STEVE HART

S

SHOULD ORIGIN STAND ALONE?

eems the same old discussion comes up every year around this time. State of Origin – to stand alone or not to stand alone? Should rugby league’s jewel in the crown have its own weekend? Let’s examine briefly both sides of the debate. In the corner FOR we have the argument that NRL games are sub-standard during the Origin period and that crowds are low. Trying to sell NRL games without Origin stars is like trying to sell tickets to a Rolling Stones concert without Mick and Keith. Plus Origin is a showpiece and deserves to be put on a pedestal. All great points! Ladies and gentlemen in the corner AGAINST we have Channel Nine boss David Gyngell saying, “If it ain’t broke don’t try and fix it”! Gyngell claims Origin on a Wednesday night is a major factor to big crowds and TV audiences. To back him up you might point to 2001 when Origin actually had its own weekend with games played on a Sunday night. It was scrapped due to complaints that there wasn’t enough footy on the weekend. Seems arguments on both sides are valid. Perhaps thinking outside the square is needed for this debate. Among the more credible solutions, we’ve heard some suggestions that Origin could be played on a Monday night giving players more time to back up but still

Fans often complain about the quality of NRL matches during Origin they’d be missing from the preceding weekend, so I don’t know about that one. A few years ago a whacky idea was put forward for a five week mid-season competition that could include novelty teams like an NYC representative team, a combined NRL-based England side, and/ or a Papua New Guinea or Pacific Islander side as well as the 16 club teams. My head is spinning, too whacky for me and most league fans I think.

So sure games on pre-Origin weekends might not be the best standard but it’s better than no games at all, and there’s a certain intrigue for the competition that goes with it. How good was that Canterbury vs Canberra game last weekend? You know what I’m going with? It works just fine. Let’s leave it alone. Sorry I brought it up!

LADDER POSITIONS MEAN NOTHING AS ARCH RIVALS CLASH IN BATTLE OF THE WEST Despite where both sides sit on the competition ladder, tonight’s Holden Cup fixture between the competition leading Penrith Panthers and the third last-placed Parramatta Eels should be an absolute cracker. Penrith’s form has been outstanding for most of the year, winning their last six games, while the Eels have struggled to find any sort of traction so far this season, unable to win their last five. But clashes between Penrith and Parramatta have never been about where both sides sit on the premiership table – it’s about so much more. It’s about which young side has the best junior talent, which supporter base has the most passion and fire, and most importantly, which club is the best in the west. So far, Penrith are proving they’re that team with eight wins to their name while Parramatta sit on just three wins after 11 rounds. The Panthers will come into this Friday night’s game feeling refreshed and hungry having enjoyed a near two week break off, following a bye last round. Parramatta, on other hand, won’t be as refreshed, having played the Rabbitohs in a tough encounter last Friday night

at ANZ Stadium. Parramatta were down 26-12 to the Rabbitohs before storming home with a wet sail late in the second half. The Eels managed to draw level with a try in the dying minutes but unfortunately for Parramatta fans, the conversion was missed leaving the game tied at 26-all. Penrith have named a very strong side for the clash with the only major omission being Robert Jennings, who’s been named in Penrith’s NSW Cup side this weekend. Fullback Brent Naden will captain the side while half Soni Luke will shift to hooker. For the Eels, they’ve made several changes to the side that met the Rabbitohs last Friday. Parramatta fullback Bevan French and halfback Zach Dockar-Clay will return to the side after stints with the Wentworthville Magpies. Both Penrith and Parramatta can expect a bumper crowd this Friday night as fans arrive early to secure their seat for the first grade blockbuster later that evening. Kick off between the Eels and Panthers is at 5.30pm.

NSW CUP

BY STEW MOSES

@TheRiffMarn

BYE THE BEST THING FOR TIRED PANTHERS AS THEY LOOK TO RETURN TO THE WINNERS CIRCLE The Panthers having had the first of two scheduled competition byes, are set to resume their defence of the NSW Cup when they travel to Brookvale Oval to take on a Manly side that would still be smarting from their Round 6 loss at Pepper Stadium, 24-16. With the loss last start against the then bottom of the table North Sydney Bears, the bye has come at a good time for the majority of Penrith’s 17 who were starting to look jaded especially in attack in recent weeks, which isn’t surprising given the level of work in defence the Panthers have had to exert. Penrith now turn their attention to this Saturday’s clash with 10th-placed Manly, who have continued to struggle in 2015 since their last encounter back in Round 6. Having been beaten by a weakened Bears outfit two weeks ago there is no room for complacency going into this clash against another lowly ranked side for the Panthers. Penrith’s attack is now ranked 11th among the 12 teams but their defence remains ranked first, which is reflective of the amount of defence the Panthers have been required to do in recent games. The Sea Eagles on the other hand are ranked seventh in attack but the differ-

ence between the teams is ultimately the defence with Manly having conceded more points in defence than any other team, averaging over 29 points per game, almost twice that of the competition’s best defence, Penrith, who average less than 16 points per game. Unlike Penrith, Manly played a home game away from home last Saturday, falling to the Illawarra Cutters 38-18. This weekend’s NSW Cup game versus Penrith will represent the first time in a long time that a non-NRL game has taken place at Brookvale Oval. In team news, Manly have named a strong side, including the likes of David Williams, Brayden Williame, Tony Satini, Jayden Hodges, Tyson Andrews and Siosaia Vave. Conversely Penrith have been boosted by the return from injury of Nathan Smith and Adrian Davis for their clash with Manly, while Robert Jennings has served his purpose in the Holden Cup and returns in the centres in place of Paul Simona. In other team news, Smith’s return from injury means that Brendan Attwood will replace Josh Tangitau at hooker, while Will Smith moves into the halves with rising half, Sam Scarlett dropping back to a five man bench.

FEATURE STORY

Beccy’s honest journey KATE REID @kate_reid6

F SPECIALISING IN

or Aussie country music star Beccy Cole it was the writing of her very candid memoir Poster Girl that inspired her to further explore her life through song on her new album ‘Sweet Rebecca’. “It was written pretty much as soon as I’d finished writing my book,” Beccy said of the album. “So I was sort of buzzing with inspiration and really wanting to get back to writing songs because, for me, it’s very therapeutic and it comes a little bit more easily than writing 85,000 words,” she laughed. Her 10th release is packed full of personal insights into the life of one of Australian country music’s most celebrated names. The album includes a dedication to her son, which Beccy admits is one of her favourite tracks on the album. “It was his 16th birthday about six

weeks ago and leading up to that I wanted to write a song that marked that occasion but also talked about our 16 years together,” she said. Beccy is certainly no stranger to success. During her career in the music industry she has earned nine Golden Guitars, including four for Female Vocalist of the Year, has three gold-certified releases to her name as well as numerous ARIA Top 10 Country and Top 40 mainstream albums. Though she has always been very open in her music, for Beccy the process of writing a memoir was far from easy. “It was absolutely hideous some days,” she laughed. “Other days it was really pleasant and lovely to go back to those times and those memories but I don’t know whether I’d have said ‘yes’ if I’d have known how invested one needs to be to write such a thing. “But, look, I don’t regret it at all.” It has been a long time coming for the country music star who had been approached a few times to put her story into words. “I thought, gosh who would want to read that, firstly,” she said.

“But then I got a bit charmed by the publishing company. They took me to lunch and called me an author within 10 minutes and so I was roped in,” she laughed. “I feel very fresh and like I’ve been through therapy now that I’ve done it because I tackled a lot of issues in my life that I probably just buried in the sand and tried to get away from. But when you’re as honest as I like to be you go back to those times and you think I’ve got to tell the story, I’m not going to skirt around it.” One of the big moments in her life that Beccy discusses in the memoir was her coming-out on ABC’s ‘Australian Story’,

which came about after years of soulsearching. “I think that’s why my life sparked a bit of interest from the publishing company and certainly that process in 2012 was very difficult but necessary as far as I was concerned and I don’t regret it for a second,” she said. “I sort of feel much better in my skin these days.” Beccy Cole will be performing at the Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, June 27 at 8pm. Tickets are $30 and $15 for children six and over. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl. com.au or call 9625 5500.

ustralian youth theatre company Monkey Baa Theatre Company will be presenting a new work by Australian playwright Sandra Eldridge at The Joan next month. ‘The Unknown Soldier’ brings together the past and present combining the stories of a 16-year-old soldier on the battlefields of WW1 and the life of a modern-day 11-year-old boy who struggles with the idea of the soldier’s disappearance. Questions and answers are exchanged between the past and present to demonstrate history’s ongo-

ing relevance to the here and now. This fascinating production explores the theme of the Unknown Solider and his place in the Australian war story. Eldridge’s script was created after extensive research, including conversations with veterans and those whose lives have been touched by war. A Q&A session will be held after the show to allow audiences the chance to learn more about Sandra’s writing process. This is sure to be a thought provoking production from one of Australia’s largest touring theatre companies. The Unknown Soldier will be on at The Joan on Wednesday, June 10 at 7pm for the general public and Thursday, June 11 at 10.30am and 1pm for school audiences. Call 4723 7600.

Ê So, I caught Channel Nine’s new show ‘Married at First Sight’ recently and I must say, I couldn’t stop watching it. While I agree it’s very lame, cringe-worthy and awkward, it was interesting to see it all play out. I dare say I won’t be a diehard fan of the show but I’ll flick it on again from time to time. In other ‘Married at First Sight’ news, the show has been renewed for a second season with the ratings simply superb.

Ê Next month the BIO channel on Foxtel will air ‘When the Queen Came to Town’, a premiere documentary that takes us back to a young Queen Elizabeth in her maiden visit to Australia in 1954. It will air Monday, June 8 at 7.30pm. Ê The fabulous Effie will be back on our screens next month, hosting a 90s music videos special on Foxtel’s MAX. Effie will count down her top 25 classic songs of the 90s including MC Hammer, La Bouche, Peter Andre, Paula Abdul and more. The two hour special premieres on MAX on Saturday, June 6 at 8.00pm. In the words of Effie... “How embarrassment!” Ê The ABC will air an Australian mini-series next month titled ‘The Secret River’. Based on Kate Grenville’s novel, the two-part drama tells the deeply personal story of Will and Sal Thornhill, early convict colonists who lay claim to a plot of land on the then remote Hawkesbury River. The mini-series stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Sarah Snook, Lachy Hume and Tim Minchin. It will air at 8.30pm on Sunday, June 14 and conclude Sunday, June 21 on the ABC. Should be a beauty and a ratings winner for the ABC.

DVD Fifty Shades Of Grey Rated MA15+ // KATE REID

‘50 Shades of Grey’ fans will be happy to know that the worldwide book/movie phenomenon hits stores this week. The story revolves around the young and innocent Anastasia Steele who interviews the handsome yet intimidating entrepreneur Christian Grey. Christian takes a liking to Ana and sets out to win her over, but this is not your typical love story. Christian has a fetish for sexual submission and wants Ana to sign a contract that effectively hands control of their relationship, if you can call it that, over to him. As you’d expect ‘50 Shades of Grey’ features plenty of sexual themes including the red room of pain, which contains a varied collection

of whips, chains and toys. If you’re the kind of person that embarrasses easily it’s probably best to watch this one alone. Unfortunately, despite all the hype, ‘50 Shades of Grey’ just feels a bit too confused, it’s not quite sure if it’s erotica or romance. And to be honest it doesn’t really hit the mark on either end. I’m not sure if it’s the failing of lead actor Jamie Dornan or the character himself but I found it hard to see the appeal in a man like Christian, and clearly so did Ana as she spends most of the film trying to change him. All in all ‘50 Shades of Grey’ is a pretty mediocre affair.

Talk // KATE REID Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll probably be aware that Aussie musician and ex-Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has just released a new album after a seven year break. Though ‘Talk’ is the biggest musical leap Johns has made, the transition is not all that surprising. Listen to his back catalogue and you’ll hear a man that has never shied away from experimenting with new sounds. This album is a very smooth affair that’s influenced heavily by r ‘n’ b stylings. Johns’ beautiful falsetto blends perfectly with the chilled vibe on tracks like first single ‘Aerial Love’. It’s an immediately accessible album that, while cohesive, never rests solely on one sound. If all you want from Johns is another ‘Frogstomp’ then keep walking, but if you’re keen to hear what else he has in his musical bag of tricks then get this album.

4 STARS

For someone who isn’t necessarily a fan of the detective and secret agenttype movies, I liked what ‘Spy’ had to offer. Desk-bound CIA analyst, Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) volunteers herself to go undercover to gain information about

a deal going on involving the sale of a bomb. The movie follows Susan on her mission as she travels from Paris to Rome to Budapest, all with lame identities, adding in that comedy aspect. Australian Rose Byrne is somewhat of a stand out in the film as the nasty villain Raina Boyanov, who manages to obtain a portable nuke she wants to sell. She also makes holding a gun look like it’s an accessory. Jason Statham is a surprising comedic prodigy throughout the film with his tell-tale stories that places him in weird and quirky situations, such as posing as Barack Obama, to try and one-up McCarthy’s character as they compete to be the best agents. Miranda Hart adds that needed quirkiness to the film with her character Nancy who is the woman behind the ear piece when Susan goes undercover. She will make you chuckle, but it isn’t really enough to make you laugh out loud. Be prepared to get a good look at someone when they get shot, stabbed or vomit as the production team have hit slow motion in these moments.

While it adds something to the film, it’s probably not what you want to see. A comedy with its own twist, like any good film, it will make you chuckle and laugh and also cringe at those unsightly moments. However, it is weighed down with some long dialogue where the story and plot sometimes gets lost. You may realise there are some overused jokes and gags but overall, it just reaches its intention with the comedy meets action fun-filled film it aspires to be. It’s something different to the ordinary James Bond action-type spy movies as the film is complemented with those comedic one-liners.

WHAT’S AT N

STEAK DC

Here in Australia we are blessed with some of the best beef available in the world. We can now access a huge range of different cuts, and demand for the highest quality has seen a rapid growth in availability. Today I’m going to focus on the popular cuts that you may see at your butcher or on your local steak house menu. I will list them in order of cheapest to most expensive… which is not necessarily worst to best! Everyone has their favourite cut and how to eat them, so the following is just a guide and in my opinion!

problem as both of those cuts have different cooking times! So do you over cook the eye fillet or under cook the porterhouse? Anyway, they are popular and I find the best Tbone cut is 400gms and over. Start it on the grill and finish in a 110c oven. Best eaten Medium Rare.

Rump: One thing that makes any steak tender is it being cut 90 degrees to the grain. A whole rump is a primal muscle, made up of four sub primal muscles (plus the tri tip, that isn’t generally eaten as a steak) made up of five muscles which all run in different directions. So the huge dinner plate size rump you may see in the shop window had been cut running a knife through those muscles with only one of them being 90 degrees! This means that a majority of that steak will be tough! Now rump has a fantastic true beef flavour, the way to also ensure it is tender is to “breakdown” the rump into the five muscles, then cut those at 90 degrees of their own grain. This in my opinion will give you one of the best tasting BBQ steaks you will eat. The Rump ‘cap’ is great for roasting. Best eaten Medium.

Scotch Fillet: Also known as ‘Cube roll’, ‘Rib fillet’ or just ‘Scotch’. This is the most prized cut in places like Japan and Korea, to the point that the very best of Australian Scotch usually ends up there! It is a beautiful combination of flavour and tenderness made up of the centre eye and the delicious cap that runs over the top. Best cut around 300-350gms. With the bone still attached, this is known as ‘Ribeye’. This is typically my steak of choice. Best eaten Medium and in some grain fed or Wagyu will even take Medium Well to melt some of the extra fat.

Tbone: Tbone is obviously named because of the ‘T’ shaped bone down the centre. It is made up of two different steaks, the big side is a porterhouse, the small side eye fillet. For me, this poses a

Porterhouse: Also known as ‘New York cut’ or ‘Striploin’, as mentioned this is the cut that is on the big side of the Tbone. A nice cut that has a fatty edge but relatively lean meat. Ideal around 300gms and I think best eaten Medium Rare.

Eye Fillet:The most expensive cut, super tender, it has little to no fat… and little to no flavour! This is the cut I would use for a raw beef dish like Steak Tartar or Beef Carpaccio. The only time I will cook fillet is if I’m doing a very strong flavoured sauce to compensate for the lack of flavour. Best eaten Raw or Rare. • Tomahawk: Our signature Steak at

HUX Grill is the ‘Tomahawk’. This is a 1.3kg full rib on Scotch fillet. We cook it in a vacuum sealed bag and in a 55 degree water bath for a minimum of one hour then onto a super hot grill for 40 seconds each side! For the perfect steak every time follow these basic steps: • Bring the meat to room temperature (leave out of the fridge for 2-3 hours) • Season your meat with salt and pepper prior to cooking • Put a small amount of oil on the steak, not on the grill or pan • Pre heat the grill or pan • Buy yourself a meat thermometer! Use this to check the ‘doneness’ of your steak. Stick it into the thickest part of the meat. Here’s a guide for the correct temperatures - Rare 45c - Medium Rare 55c - Medium 58c - Medium Well 62c - Well Done 70c • Finally rest your steak for half the time you have cooked it so the juices re–absorb into the meat and not release on to your plate!

Taken 3 on Blu-ray

A

ction man Liam Neeson is back for one more round when ‘Taken 3’ hits stores next month. Neeson reprises his role as former CIA operative Bryan Mills in the most recent instalment of the ‘Taken’ franchise. This time Mills is the one on the run from the law when he is framed for the brutal murder of ex-wife Lenore, played by Famke Janssen. As police inspector Franck Dotzler, played by Forest Whitaker, tries to hunt him down, Mills uses his skills to track down the real killer before it’s too late, for him and his daughter Kim, played by Maggie Grace. The DVD and Blu-ray versions feature an extended cut of the film, plus deleted scenes and other special features. The ‘Taken’ franchise has been a huge hit with audiences, placing Neeson as the go to guy for action flicks. There’s nothing like watching a ‘Taken’ movie with the lights off and the TV up loud on a Friday or Saturday night with your mates or family. If you’re a ‘Taken’ fan, or just love a good guy/bad guy flick, then be sure to grab your DVD or Blu-ray copy when it’s released on Wednesday, June 3! The Weekender has five copies of ‘Taken 3’ on Blu-ray to give away. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘TAKEN’ to competitions@westernweekender.com.au with your name and contact details. Entries close Wednesday, June 3. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/15/00066. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au or Weekender reception.

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

If you are attached, things could get hot and heavy at Casa Taurus, as the Full Moon stimulates your intimacy zone. Singles – you could find love via an introduction from a relative. But only focus on suitors who are serious about settling down. Plan some exciting activities you can enjoy together.

Avoid getting into ‘Very-Stressed Virgo Mode’! Try to worry less and focus more, as you complete one task at a time, before moving on to the next project. Have you been burning the midnight oil at work … and neglecting your nearest and dearest in the process? Re-establish family connections and nurture loved ones.

HOROSCOPES

You can get so caught up in the busyness of daily life that you neglect those closest to you. The Full Moon falls in your relationship zone, so spend quality time with loved ones. But make sure you listen to what they have to say, otherwise you’ll make assumptions and end up with a misunderstanding on your hands.

Have you been lazy? With the Full Moon activating your wellbeing zone, make sure you nurture your body with healthy food and exercise. You’ll find the combination of enthusiasm and discipline will pay off handsomely in the future. Lucky Venus moves through your money zone which often means an increase in cash flow.

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

When you’re communicating with others, stay on topic and focus on the facts. Group activities are favoured, as long as you give others the freedom to express their ideas. And the more you nurture friends and support your peer group, the more love and assistance you’ll receive in return. Singles – you could find love online.

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

The Full Moon focuses attention on financial matters and self-esteem issues. Have confidence in your inner worth, and avoid being too attached to material possessions and outer appearances. With Venus joining Jupiter in your career zone socialising with colleagues will help improve workplace relations.

is the adjustment to the rate of depreciation. Any business with an aggregate annual turnover of less than $2 million is now able to instantly write off any new assets up to the value of $20,000, rather than having to claim those deductions back over the course of a few years. Tax Cuts Here are two words every business likes to hear: Tax cuts. As with the new depre-

ciation terms, any company with a yearly turnover of less than $2 million will also enjoy a tax reduction of 1.5 per cent (28.5 per cent, down from 30 per cent). As the new rate goes into effect from July 1, 2015, companies that utilise a Pay As You Go scheme might be even able to benefit from these changes as early as October 28, 2015 – the first scheduled payment date. Farmers catch a break If small businesses are the backbone of Australia, the agricultural industry is the country’s heart. Under the new budget, farmers will be eligible for tax cuts for spending on a variety of assets, including fencing, dams and tanks, among many others. These changes don’t go into effect until July 2016, so don’t go rushing out to buy anything just yet. What does it all mean? The budget changes are designed to promote the growth of small businesses across Australia. The new tax incentives make it an excellent time to expand your company and boost your business finances. If you’ve been putting off upgrading or buying additional assets for your company, then this is your time to shine. If you’ve got any questions about the Budget, pop into BOQ Penrith to see me.

JEWELLERY

Jewellery for your Wedding Day

York Jewellers Penrith

Traditionally when you get married your wedding ring is placed onto your finger ‘first’, followed by your engagement ring. Most people like the idea of wearing their rings this way as it means that you don’t have to remove your wedding ring when you want to take your engagement ring on and off in the future. Once you have said your vows you can then pop your

engagement ring back onto your left hand before the photos start. Apart from those very important pieces of jewellery, what else should you wear on your wedding day? A popular thing to do is borrow a precious piece or heirloom from a family member. If this has a blue stone then lucky you, you’ve got your something borrowed and something blue all sorted! If these heirlooms need a little help to bring them back to their former sparkly selves for your wedding day take them to your trusted jeweller and have them give you an idea of what needs to be done. Sometimes a simple polish is all it needs to give them a new lease on life. Of course you can complement these pieces with some earrings or a pendant and a bracelet. Most gents that I’ve helped with wedding rings choose to wear a nice watch, again this could be a ‘hand me down’ from the family or a surprise wedding gift from your bride to be. A pair of cufflinks to spruce up their dinner suit is also another option. So, have I given you something to think about? Have a fantastic weekend and I’ll see you in the next edition!

Kate

Reid NUTRITION

With the increased popularity of diets such as the Paleo diet, which advises adherents to avoid grain based foods among other things, many people are confused as to whether grains have a place in a healthy, balanced diet. The short answer to this one is ‘yes’. Grains are a great source of fibre, B vitamins, antioxidants and phytochemicals, which help to lower blood cholesterol levels. These foods are also high in carbohydrates, which is the body’s main energy source.

Do grains have a place in your diet? Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

The benefits of wholegrains have been well documented. Scientific studies have found a link between consumption of cereals and wholegrain foods and a reduction in the risk of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer, as well as reduced mortality rates. Part of the reason why grain foods get a bad wrap is that people often lump them all

into one category rather than identifying the most nutritious options. When it comes to these foods it’s better to choose wholegrain rather than highly refined white breads, cereals and pasta. A simple way to recognise what’s the more nutritious option is to look for foods that are closest to their original state. For example, breads that contain visible seeds, nuts and grains are going to provide more fibre, vitamins and minerals than a highly refined white bread. That being said, food is meant to be pleasurable, so if your diet is mostly made up of healthy foods you can afford to enjoy a piece a white toast every now and then. Of course when it comes to grain consumption there are exceptions to the rule. Those who suffer from gluten or wheat intolerance, celiac disease or other digestive disorders will need to avoid certain foods. If you fall into this category, it’s best to speak to a dietitian to learn how best to manage your diet. At the end of the day, for most people, there’s no need to cut a whole food group from your diet. Instead, focus on consuming a wide variety of nutritious foods from all food groups, while enjoying the odd treat every now and then. Happy eating!

Following on from last week’s article, now that we have your bridesmaids and groomsmen gifts sorted, what jewellery will you (the bride and groom) be wearing on your wedding day? It may sound like a silly question; obviously you’ll be wearing your engagement ring. Or will you? In my experience many brides opt to either move their engagement ring to the right hand ring finger, or give it to their mum or a friend to hold onto, just for the ceremony.

have painful areas on their body – this is usually where the bite wound is. Often you will also find a soft, warm lump and sometimes, if the abscess bursts, you will find a small weeping wound. How are abscesses treated? Treatment generally involves surgery to flush out the pus and remove any dead/traumatised tissue. Sometimes drains are placed when there are large pockets and this allows the skin to heal. Antibiotics and pain relief are also used to keep your cat nice and comfortable. Surgery can often be avoided if your cat is brought in as soon as a bite happens. How can I prevent this in my cat? Most abscesses are caused by cat fights, so the best way to prevent them is by keeping your cat indoors as much as possible. It is also essential to get your cats desexed; entire male cats are very territorial and are much more likely to fight than desexed cats! It is also important to see your vet as soon as you think your cat has been in a fight. You can usually prevent an abscess from forming with early treatment. It is also important to remember that the FIV virus (feline AIDS) is transmitted through deep scratches and bite wounds. Cats that have access to outdoors are at risk of contracting feline AIDS.

Cats love to roam and explore their environment, however, cats that have access to outdoors will occasionally get into a fight with another cat. Cats are territorial animals and will fight with each other to defend their territory. If your cat gets bitten during a fight, bacteria from the other cat’s teeth will enter the wound and this may result in the formation of an abscess. An abscess is an accumulation of pus that usually forms as a result of a puncture wound. Cat fight abscesses are most common around the face, shoulders or around the

rump/tail. If you know that your cat has been in a fight, it is always a good idea to see a veterinarian immediately – early use of antibiotics can prevent abscess formation and also avoid surgery. What are the signs that your cat has an abscess? Abscesses usually appear two to seven days after your cat gets bitten. Affected cats will often be lethargic, have a poor appetite, have a fever and sometimes

His guidelines for living are designed so we can live life to the full and not mess it up. In the New Testament book of John, Jesus says, “I have come so that they may life, and have it to the full.” He continues, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me… I lay down my life for the sheep…they will listen to my voice.” Have you been running into pigs lately? Why not follow the guidelines of the one who created life. Listen to his voice as he speaks to us from the Bible. You might find your life changed!

It’s easy to think the worst of people, making wrong conclusions, especially when people are trying to warn us. It’s also easy to do that with God. Some people don’t like God telling us how to live and what to do. We can be like the child, who stamps their foot and shouts, “You can’t tell me what to do!” We want to live our life our way. Yet God is just trying to stop us running into pigs.

Junk food kills the gut bacteria that can help keep people thin, while Belgian beer and coffee can increase them! Microbes that live in people’s bodies make up 90 per cent of living cells and when disrupted could be a major cause of obesity. Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London wrote a new book called The Diet Myth. He researches the links between microbes, food and health in an attempt to gain an insight into the burgeoning obesity crisis. Prof Spector’s research

A bloke called Frank Muir tells this story. You may’ve heard it. “I was driving down the street, enjoying the drive, when suddenly around the corner, came an old Leyland 1100. It was on the wrong side of the road, weaving everywhere. It missed my car by the smallest margin. It was being driven by a woman. As it lurched past, the woman poked her head out the window, screaming at me, “PIG!” I drove on thinking to myself, “Typical!” and as I turned the corner I ran smack, bang, into the pig!”

also found sweeteners in diet fizzy drinks had adverse affects on metabolism, leading to weight gain, while fasting diets such as the 5:2 diet could benefit microbes and metabolism. But he found some elements were down to genetics, with a third of people naturally possessing microbes which prevented them getting fat, while genes

even determined some people’s preference for salads, broccoli or garlic. How you digest food is as important as what you’re digesting. Some people still believe just eating fat is what makes us fat. Healthy fats and oils make us feel full and contain vital nutrients for healthy hair and radiant skin, while improving brain function, cholesterol levels and even helping reduce weight. Examples are omega-3 fatty acids, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, avocado, coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut cream and flaxseed oil, full cream dairy is technically a protein but it contains a wide array of vital nutrients, including fat-soluble vitamins. Just don’t choose low fat! And it’s good to see vegetables have displaced grains and cereals as the staple foods. It’s about time we use a form of carbs packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre, with virtually zero ability to make you put on weight. In the 1970s, the base of the first pyramid was predominantly breads, cereals, rice and pasta. But with new research suggesting grain and cereal-based carbs are contributing to obesity and low-grade chronic inflammatory diseases, veggies are the superior carb option.

TOYOTA

Corolla gets a modern makeover

oyota Corolla customers will do a double-take when the updated hatch version of Australia’s best-selling car arrives on the market very soon. Local buyers will have the choice of two distinct looks for the latest hatch, derived from new designs unveiled at recent motor shows in Geneva and New York. The first is based on the refreshed European Toyota Auris and will form the basis of the popular Ascent and Ascent Sport grades in Australia. It displays a more prominent Toyota logo at the front, flanked by chrome ‘wings’, new headlight clusters, a more prominent front bumper and a lower grille that runs the full width of the car. The second, more aggressive design, to be reserved locally for the sporty SX and ZR Corolla hatch variants, debuted on the iM hatch from Toyota’s youth-oriented Scion brand in the US. Its sharp features include a body aero kit along with a distinctive piano-black honeycomb pattern for its upper grille, hexagonal lower grille and side bezels. “We are spicing up the Corolla hatch range with two distinct looks – the classic redesign seen in the European car and the added spark displayed by the sportylooking US car,” Toyota’s Tony Cramb said. For the past two years, Toyota Corolla has claimed the title as Australia’s bestselling car.

Crisis deepens at the Emus

The Penrith Emus in action last weekend. Photo: Ula Martin NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu is now blaming injuries for his side’s worst season in years. The Emus clocked up their 10th loss of the year last Saturday afternoon, belted by lowly Gordon 73-0. But now Tu’ipulotu has revealed his embattled side have also had a season from hell on the injury front – further compounding their troubles.

P

“One player did his calf muscle on the weekend and another did his ACL,” Tu’ipulotu said. “That’s on top of our prop busting his arm six weeks ago while another player did his back and is out for the season. Another player also did his ACL.” The Emus were only down 15-0 to Gordon at half-time but two quick tries to begin the second half demoralised the already down and out team. “It wasn’t a matter of the first half, it was the second half,” Tu’ipulotu said. “Once they let in two tries, their heads

started to drop. I think it’s getting to them mentally as well.” After 10 games this season, the Emus have only scored 43 points while they’ve had a whopping 606 points scored against them. Tu’ipulotu said his side understand the position they’re in but need to continue to battle and look forward to the future. “The players do care but they also know their ability isn’t at first grade level, they understand that,” he said. “What they need to do is stick together and if they can do that and come back next

year, then you’re looking at a stronger first and second grade team. “The players understand what’s needed and as much as they’re getting flogged, it’s also about getting experience in first grade.” Meanwhile, after a number of media reports surrounding the club’s state of affairs last week, the Weekender can confirm Emus President Jim Hook has met with NSW Rugby officials to discuss various ways to get Penrith out of trouble. This week the Emus will travel to Woollahra Oval to take on Eastern Suburbs.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Crook takes up new role with Wanderers

NRL stars of the future honoured after great seasons in SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup

THE Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the appointment of Ian Crook as Technical Director of the Western Sydney Wanderers Elite Academy structure. Crook’s excellence in developing the stars of the future has been evident during a largely celebrated coaching career at both the senior and junior elite level. Following the completion of the Wanderers’ 42 match AFC Champions League winning season, Crook has stepped down from his Hyundai A-League Assistant Coach role with the club to concentrate solely on the development and implementation of the Wanderers Elite Academy. “I’m excited to return to elite youth development because this project is something new and I’ll have the opportunity to mould and develop players for our first team using the talent of western Sydney, which our region has always been known for,” said Crook. “Success will be deemed by how many players from western Sydney end up in the Hyundai A-League and in the Socceroos. This club has worked heavily in the past three years on developing good attributes in individuals and we want to continue that.” CEO John Tsatsimas said Crook is the best man for the role.

arold Matthews young gun Shannon Harris and SG Ball prospect Reed Izzard were the big winners at last week’s 2015 Penrith Panthers Junior Representative Presentation Night. The pair picked up the night’s Player of the Year Awards with Harris the standout in the Harold Matthews competition and Izzard the best among Penrith’s SG Ball squad. More than 220 people attended the event at Pepper Stadium’s Chairman’s Lounge last Wednesday, which was hosted by Channel Nine rugby league personality Yvonne Sampson. NSW Cup players Kieran Moss and Tom Eisenhuth were also in attendance and assisted with presenting the major awards. Both players have come through Penrith’s junior representative scene in recent years with Eisenhuth playing a handful of first grade games a number of years ago and Moss on the cusp of NRL selection once he returns from a leg injury. Panthers boss Phil Gould and coach Ivan Cleary were also in attendance and spoke during the evening.

The Harold Matthews Junior League Award went to De Braska Rikiriki, while the SG Ball Junior League Award was presented to joint winners Ray Maroun

and Liam Martin. Club Person of the Year was awarded to Nathan Mairleitner. It was another great year for Penrith’s junior representative teams with both the Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides making it through to their respective finals series’. Perhaps it won’t be long before we see some of the youngsters on the NRL stage.

AFL’s Giants show how much they Care GWS plans to double its community involvement thanks to new program that helps those in need NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

he Greater Western Sydney Giants have launched a major community initiative that will see the club double its community outcomes and further enrich the lives of people in western Sydney. ‘Giants Care’ is an innovative and meaningful community initiative like no other program run by a sporting club across Australia. Now in their fourth season, the Giants have quickly become a leader in the community delivering first class programs to those that need them most. Giants players commit 4200 hours to the community every year and the club is dedicated to helping deliver a wide range of programs that will make a significant impact on those involved. Some of Australia’s most respected organisations with like-minded vision for the western Sydney community have banded together to make Giants Care possible. These organisations include Lend Lease, Virgin Australia, ANZ, Linfox, Origin, Oxanda, UWS and News Corp Australia. These partners have made a three

T

Giants Head of Community, Ali Faraj, player Adam Tomlinson and community engagement manager Emad Elkheir with western Sydney students year commitment to Giants Care to help double the club’s community engagement outcomes, which will impact positively on current and future generations. Giants Care will help provide the vehicle to help deliver on the four key pillars of the club’s community agenda which are:

Health, Harmony, Education and Employment. The initiative will cover key areas including social cohesion, numeracy, literacy, health, environment, science, nutrition, youth employment and leadership. Giants Care programs will focus on

people from low socio-economic backgrounds and disadvantaged communities across western Sydney. These programs will make a material difference in the communities that need them most. More than 12,000 people engaged in Giants community programs in 2014 and thanks to Giants Care, this figure is set to double to 24,000 over the next three years. “Giants Care wouldn’t be possible without the significant investment made by our eight foundation partners and we thank them for their support,” Giants Chief Executive, David Matthews said. “We are proud of the work we do in the community and Giants Care will see us take this to a whole new level across western Sydney. “We want to build a great club like no other. A club that wins premierships, delivers the best family entertainment and enriches the lives of people across western Sydney. Giants Care is a key part of this.” Meanwhile, the Giants are also making huge inroads on the field recording their sixth win of the season last Saturday afternoon against Adelaide. The Giants take on the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne this Saturday at 4.35pm.

Wanderers secure former Socceroo Zeljko Kalac joins Western Sydney as goalkeeping overhaul continues; Ron Corry moves to new role NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

fter leaking a competition third worst 44 goals this A-League season, the Western Sydney Wanderers have announced that Socceroos legend Zeljko Kalac will be the club’s new goalkeeper coach. The role will see the 42-year-old mentor at all levels of the club including the A-League, W-League and Youth League as well as the new Wanderers Academy Structure. After a distinguished playing career that saw him win the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, Kalac has extensive A-League experience as a goalkeeper coach, having previously worked with this year’s A-League runners-up Sydney FC for the past few seasons. Davide Del Giovine will join Kalac as an assistant in the goalkeeper coach department. Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the appointment of Kalac further cemented the club’s commitment to a genuine elite player pathway for western Sydney. “With Zeljko’s role incorporating every level of this club, the youth of western

Former goalkeeper coach Ron Corry Sydney will have even greater access to elite-level coaching and an improved player pathway to the Hyundai A-League,” he said. “From the ages of 12 all the way to the first team, Zeljko will be training the best goalkeepers in western Sydney and that’s a huge win for the region.” After a highly successful three seasons with the Wanderers A-League side, squad incumbent goalkeeper Ron Corry will stay with the club in a variety of roles including scouting, community coaching and as an ambassador.

Tsatsimas said the 73-year-old’s contribution to the club has been priceless. “Ron played a critical part of our success from day one at the Wanderers and he has the Red and Black coursing through his veins,” he said. “The passion Ron feels for this club cannot be described in words. He has a rich history in football stretching back to 1964 and we are thankful that he will continue to remain with the Wanderers.” Recently, the Wanderers let go long-time goalkeeper Ante Covic. A replacement for Covic is yet to be named.

@natetaylor87

t 39 years of age, cricketer Daniel Dent has been named the 2015 Penrith Cricket Club Men’s Player of the Year. It’s the first time Dent has won the prestigious award after being named runner-up on numerous occasions since joining the club in the 1991/92 season. The Player of the Year Award is determined based on points awarded to the players after each round. The player who makes the most impact on a game is awarded the maximum points. Speaking with the Weekender, Dent said he was very surprised to finally have won the coveted award. “I’ve been runner-up at least three times before and I’ve always been within a point but could never quite get over the line,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting to win at all. I thought Ben Betros would’ve won given his performances during the year. I think I only beat him by a point, so it was very close.” Dent, a predominant bowler/all-rounder, began his cricketing career at Penrith back in 1991 as a Year 11 student.

Daniel Dent with Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler. Photo: Fred Marzano Photography Despite getting married, having three kids and moving out of the area, he still calls Penrith home. “I used to live in Emu Plains with my parents

and when I got married I moved to Quakers Hill. I got offered to play for Blacktown but I declined to remain at Penrith,” Dent said. “I’ve played with just about everybody at the club including many guys who have retired. “You build a lot of camaraderie with the guys you’re playing with and once you reach that stage, you don’t want to leave anymore.” Dent is a life member of the Penrith club and is also on the honour roll for taking more than 300 wickets throughout his 23 year career. He’s played in every grade at Penrith apart from first grade, and this year was a valuable member of Penrith’s fifth grade team. “The last five years I’ve done a lot of mentoring with the youngsters coming through, and I’ve moved around the grades to do that,” Dent said. Others winners during last Saturday’s Penrith Cricket Club Presentation Night were: Women’s Player of the Year, Naomi Stalenberg; Limited Overs Player of the Year, Patrick Jackson; T20 Player of the Year, Patrick Jackson; Outstanding All-Rounder and Batting Award, Ben Betros; Bowling Award, Taren Finemore; Wicket Keeping Award, Tyran Liddiard; Fielding Award, Matthew Halse and Ed Brown; Rookie of the Year, Nathan Muskell.
