Teen responsible for ferocious blaze Police charge 16-year-old boy with lighting fire that sparked major emergency in Cranebrook last Friday JADE ALIPRANDI

teenage boy who allegedly deliberately lit an out of control bushfire in Cranebrook last Friday is set to appear in court on December 1.

The 16-year-old was arrested on Saturday, November 5, but was granted bail after he was charged with ‘intentionally cause fire’ and ‘be reckless as to its spread’.

Two other teens, aged 17 and 21, were arrested the day prior on the corner of Cranebook and Londonderry roads, Cranebrook, but were later released and are continuing to assist police with their inquiries.

What started out as a 500 metre-long fire at about 2pm last Friday turned into a 200 hectare blaze after it spread at a rapid rate.

Residents near the fire were told to evacuate immediately as smoke continued to fill the air with the fire inching closer to homes by the second.

Cranebrook resident Dominic Mico told the Weekender it was unlike anything he had seen before.

“At first there wasn’t too much smoke, but in a very short space of time it picked up immensely and I realised it could be a pretty big problem,” he said.

“Soon after the fire had started, the sky above the reserve behind Vincent Road and in Llandilo was covered in smoke and continued to spread and rise quickly.

“It was difficult to completely take in what was happening as it’s only spring and fire season is here already.

“The sirens of the fire brigade and SES were so loud and I could also hear and see the water bombers flying overhead to contain the fire.”

Residents took to social media to share extraordinary pictures and vision of the fire, as it began to emerge that the blaze was deliberately lit.

The fire reportedly started in Wianamatta Nature Reserve on Vincent Road, Cranebrook but quickly jumped over the road and made it to Llandilo.

Xavier College and Cherrywood Village were evacuated.

Over 300 fire fighters brought the blaze under control at around 6pm.

NSW RFS conducted a preliminary assessment of the damage and found no homes were completely destroyed but four were damaged, as well as an aged care facility, and a shed.

A number of cars were also damaged.

Police are continuing their investigations into the fire.

rowsing through the ABC website on the weekend – you know, the publicly funded broadcaster that’s supposed to allow us to escape the commercialism and clickbait that dominates news so much these days – I came across an interesting opening line to a story.

“Scroll through your favourite playlist on your phone. Chances are the majority of musicians are men.”

Oh, one of “those” stories.

Under the heading of “analysis”, Ruby Jones’ piece points out an apparent inequality that exists within the Australian music scene.

“Turn on your radio — it is statistically likely you’ll hear music made by a man,” the story says.

“Go to a summer music festival. Is the headliner a man? Probably. The Australian music scene, like many industries, has a gender problem.”

Trust me, it gets better.

“Jennifer Andrade, 17, and Jade Diaz, 18, are part of All Girl Electronic, a western Sydney program encouraging young women to make music, and address gender imbalance in the industry,” the story says.

“They have found it hard to be taken seriously, previously.”

Could it be that a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old aren’t being taken seriously because, wait for it, they are 17 and 18?

They may have worked hard but they haven’t worked for long. Success takes time, and persistence, regardless of your sex. Apparently they have “grown up” around line-ups at festivals featuring predominantly male artists and this is somehow disadvantaging them.

Look, I didn’t set out to write one of “those” rebuttles to a feminist-driven story that pushes for “equality” in an industry that is based on subjectivity, not cold hard quotas.

But please, are we really going to try to frame this argument?

Surely we are doing young girls no favours by constantly drumming into them that they are “disadvantaged” and discriminated against.

Real sexism deserves to be tackled but crap like this only hurts the chances of young girls giving their dreams a crack; it certainly doesn’t encourage them.

We are at risk of creating a culture of entitled whingers with a woe is me attitude.

The opening line of the ABC article almost provides the ultimate contradiction to the piece.

“Scroll through your favourite playlist on your phone. Chances are the majority of musicians are men.”

That’s not actually true in my case, but if it is in yours, I presume it’s because

your tastes take you towards a particular artist or band, not because that artist has a penis.

Guess what? The audience controls success in music – now more than any other time in history.

Even millions of viewers and a barrage of publicity can’t catapult a performer from ‘The Voice’ to stardom (as we’ve seen time and time again).

You can’t manufacture success in music, it must be earned and it is driven by what people choose to listen to.

Independent artists regardless of sex have more opportunities to break through than ever before thanks to iTunes and streaming services, while festival line-ups are based on what promoters think will sell tickets, not a percentage of men versus women.

The article itself points out that only one in five APRA members are female, yet this is something any female artist can become a member of. Why aren’t they joining?

If there are legitimate examples of one sex being favoured over the other in any industry, it deserves publicity and should be stamped out.

But if we’re going to analyse every industry that has a gender imbalance, regardless of which way the majority may fall, then we’ll be here for a long time and won’t achieve much.

We are creating a culture of young people who are armed with more excuses than they are lessons.

Failure is a part of success.

When we fail, we learn. But if at every stumble we blame our gender, our age, our look or our background, we simply set ourselves up for failure again.

n administration ‘stuff up’ over land titles has sparked fresh fears homes in Claremont Meadows will be flattened to make way for a future freight rail line.

Last month, residents living along the Werrington Arterial project were told that some homeowners were given the wrong information about whether or not the Government has any future interest in their land.

The NSW Government reviewed the data between July and October this year, and clarified the original report was incorrect, and no residents along the Werrington Arterial were given the wrong information in that time.

But in the days of uncertainty, residents sought their own answers and found they aren’t completely safe just yet.

79-year-old Lionel Myers lives in a twostorey duplex between his two daughters, who together have invested tens of thousands of dollars improving the safety in his home, including installing a new lift.

Among hundreds of other residents, Mr Myers and his daughters live under the proposed area for the north-south M9 multimodal transport corridor, part of the Outer Sydney Orbital (OSO).

War of words over much-needed hospital upgrade continues DALE DRINKWATER

enrith MP Stuart Ayres has been handing out “fake” petition flyers about upgrading Nepean Hospital, according to Labor.

Mr Ayres’ petition asks the community to ‘Support the Upgrade of Nepean Hospital’ by providing their name, address, email address and signature.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar, said Mr Ayres’ petition is a ‘flimsy’ answer to an upgrade of one of the state’s most under pressure hospitals.

“This is a data mining exercise only,” she said.

“People should be very concerned why they’re actually giving their information to him because it doesn’t fit the legal criteria for it to actually be tabled in State Parliament.”

For a petition to be tabled to Parliament, it must be addressed to the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly and conclude with a request that the House do, or do not do, something.

“We have a cabinet minister as a local member who does not speak up to the Premier to get what his hospital and our hospital deserves,” said State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car. “He has to petition his own government... At the end of the day Stuart Ayres

here’s currently no foreseeable end to the closure of Nepean Hospital’s helipad, that is denying patients five minute flights to Westmead Hospital for life saving surgery.

It will continue to take at least half an hour by road, while all flights taking off or landing at the Kingswood hospital remain suspended due to the erection of cranes dangerously close to the campus.

Developers at the surrounding construction sites refused to comment on whether they would take the cranes down to allow the critical flight services, instead directing any questions at Penrith Council.

“Cranes are expected to remain on current development sites into 2017.

Council is working with relevant stakeholders regarding any concerns,”a Council spokesperson told the Weekender.

Shadow Minister for Health, Walt Secord, visited the hospital last week, and claims doctors inside suggest flights won’t be operational for years to come.

“I’ve been told by doctors that they will not have an operational helipad at Nepean Hospital until 2021. That is absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

“We have a management plan in place developed by NSW Ambulance and senior clinicians at Nepean Hospital to ensure appropriate transfer measures by road are in place for time critical patients,” he said in a statement.

“The emergency department and other

services at Nepean Hospital are fully operational.”

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance Service said their services have not been disrupted by the issue.

“NSW Ambulance retrieval services has not experienced any disruptions, either by road or helicopter, following suspended helicopter operations at Nepean Hospital,” he said.

“As a Major Trauma Service, Westmead Hospital receives patients meeting these criteria in normal practice.”

The hospital confirmed they are working with Penrith Council and aviation safety consultants to determine and respond to other proposed developments in and around the Nepean Hospital campus.

Teenager hasn’t found dress sense since last court date

A teenager who fronted court wearing a “thug life” muscle shirt has returned sporting another piece of inappropriate attire.

Faufata Filipo, 18, came under fire last month when he turned up to Penrith District Court to be sentenced for ‘break, enter and steal’ wearing a black sleeveless shirt with the words “thug life” emblazoned on the front.

Judge Mark Buscombe made it clear his second option – a black t-shirt depicting a schooner and jug of beer – was no better.

“That’s not the best shirt either,” he said when Filipo faced him again last Friday.

“Have you got a decent shirt to wear to court?”

“Nup,” Filipo replied.

“Well you better try to find one,” Judge Buscombe said.

Filipo was back in court to organise his pre-sentence report, which he failed to initiate the first time around.

Judge Buscombe made it clear he would be on a “one way ticket to jail” if he failed to meet with Community Corrections to enable them to prepare the report.

“If I don’t have a full pre-sentence report available, your sentencing options will be very limited,” he warned.

“What that means is you’ll highly likely be going to jail. Don’t think I’m joking because I’m not,” he added.

Filipo will be sentenced on December 15.

Truckie to be sentenced next month over road rage incident

A tailgating truck driver who bashed a motorist in a vicious road rage attack will learn his fate next month.

Bryan Edward Morfett was found guilty of ‘menacing driving’ and ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ following a hearing at Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

Morfett, who pleaded not guilty to the crimes, will likely face some sort of jail

sentence after Magistrate Georgia Knight indicated she agreed the threshold had been crossed.

The court heard Morfett had been following the victim for several kilometres and became agitated when he claimed the utility continued to drive below the speed limit and break harshly and suddenly for no reason.

The incident turned violent when Morfett cut off the utility and confronted the victim in his car, with bystanders witnessing the offender throw a series of punches, both inside the cabin and when the victim left his vehicle to try to escape.

Magistrate Knight determined Morfett had “tailored his evidence” to suit the hearing, noting he wouldn’t even concede that he had been irritated, which was at odds with his record of interview undertaken shortly after the brutal attack.

The victim, who sustained serious injuries, told the court he “thought he was going to die”.

Morfett will be sentenced on December 15.

Woman granted bail over robbery incident

A woman allegedly implicated in a robbery has been granted conditional bail.

Bianca Shepherd is accused of failing to act and standing by and watching four males in her company pin down a man and punch him in the face before they stripped him of his mobile phone.

Police will allege a female voice was heard shouting “get out of the car” before the males chased and set upon the victim just after midnight on November 3.

She was granted bail at Penrith Local Court last Thursday on the condition that she reside at a Barber Ave, Penrith address, report daily and adhere to a 9pm to 6am curfew.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell also made it a condition that she not go near her alleged co-accused, one being her boyfriend, which he predicted she was “not going to like”.

“How does that work when we live together?” she questioned angrily from the dock.

“You won’t be living together,” he replied.

Magistrate frustrated over man’s drug use

Corey Titheradge will be sentenced later this month after pleading guilty to drug possession.

A frustrated Magistrate Roger Clisdell questioned why the defendant had recommenced taking prohibited drugs.

“What are you back on drugs for?” he sighed.

The accused also pleaded guilty to failing to produce evidence for his Opal concession card.

Expensive phone call as police uncover massive drug haul

A drug mule sprung at St Marys with a boot load of ecstasy has been sentenced to eight years in jail.

Andrew Nick Georgiou, aged 33, faced Penrith District Court from Long Bay Jail last Thursday after police discovered the massive haul when he was busted driving his vehicle while using his mobile telephone.

The court heard Georgiou, who was transporting the cargo to settle a debt, “became nervous” when police pulled him over on Mamre Road on April 27 last year, prompting them to search his silver Ford sedan.

His reason for agitation soon became evident, with police uncovering a boot laden with drugs.

Barely concealed in two white buckets and a number of grocery enviro bags, officers located 37.25kg of ecstasy tablets and 2.7kg of cannabis.

A clearly distressed Georgiou immediately made admissions at the scene, saying: “My life is fu**ked. I’m just a sh*tkicker. I’m just the driver.”

Judge Mark Buscombe said while the offender’s role was at the bottom of the

supply chain and limited to being entrusted to courier a “large and valuable cargo”, the sheer scale of the drugs found – 74.5 times greater than the large commercial quantity – was hard to ignore.

“The quantity of drugs here is very significant,” Judge Buscombe said.

“If the drugs had reached the community they would have caused untold harm to it.”

Georgiou told police he wasn’t aware what was in the boot, but knew it was “probably illegal”.

He was apprehended on route to Badgerys Creek Road where he had been instructed to wait roadside until another person removed the drugs from the boot.

Georgiou’s scrap metal business was in decline and he was spending thousands of dollars per day on his drug and gambling addictions at the time of the offence, the court was told.

He is eligible for release on parole in April 2020.

Man tells court he wasn’t aware of licence suspension

A Glenmore Park man who pleaded guilty to drink driving and ‘driving while cancelled’ has been ordered off the track for six months.

Glenn Cowie told Penrith Local Court last Thursday he was unaware he was disqualified as he had been away for work and hadn’t opened his mail.

The court heard the fly-in-fly-out worker was caught “weaving all over the road” and subsequently failed a breath test.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said it appeared the accused worked hard but played hard as well.

“Don’t come back to court again for drink driving, because if you do, it’s the third time and you’re looking at more than bonds,” he warned.

He was convicted of mid-range drink driving, fined $800 plus an additional $200 for driving with an expired licence and ordered to enter into a 12-month supervised good behaviour bond.

Penrith: Car fails to stop after hitting woman on crossing

The driver was charged with a range of offences.

Police are appealing for public assistance after a pedestrian was injured in a fail to stop crash in Penrith last week.

About 8.45pm on Friday, November 4, an 18-year-old woman was crossing the northbound lanes of Richmond Road, Penrith, at the intersection with Boomerang Place, when she was struck by a vehicle.

The woman was using a marked pedestrian crossing at the time she was struck but the vehicle failed to stop after the incident.

The woman was taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment to a laceration on her forehead and abrasions.

The injuries are not life threatening.

Police from Penrith Local Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident.

The car which hit the woman has been described as a white Holden Commodore sedan, possibly a VR or VS, with a blue coloured number plate.

It was last seen travelling onto Cooper Street, Penrith.

Anyone who can assist with the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Kingswood: Man refuses to submit breath test

St Clair: Learner driver caught behind the wheel alone

A learner driver was allegedly caught unaccompanied by police in St Clair.

At about 7pm on Friday, November 4, police were patrolling Endeavour Avenue, St Clair when they saw a vehicle driving erratically.

Police directed the driver to stop.

Police had a conversation with the driver, a 20-year-old St Clair man.

Checks on the licence of the driver revealed that the man was a learner driver.

There were no other people in the vehicle at the time.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, November 28.

Penrith: Multiple charges for man who broke into Library

The man who allegedly broke into Penrith Library several weeks ago has been charged with a range of offences in relation to numerous break and enters.

He had his bail refused and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Friday, December 16.

Woman uses hot tea in attempt to fend off handbag thief

A man was charged with a range of offences after he was caught with a suspended licence.

At about 11.45pm on Friday, November 4, police were conducting breath testing in Kingswood when they stopped a 29-year-old Bligh Park man.

Police spoke with the driver and he was subjected to a roadside breath test.

It’s alleged he refused to supply a sample. Further checks were made of his licence. It was discovered that the man’s licence was suspended until 2021.

The driver was taken to Penrith Police Station where it’s alleged he refused a breath analysis.

A woman was allegedly robbed outside Nepean Hospital this week.

At about 5.25am on Tuesday, November 8, a 48-year-old woman was walking along Derby Street, Penrith, when she was approached by a man.

The man asked her for a cigarette before he grabbed her bag.

During the altercation, the woman poured a mug of hot tea on the man.

The alleged offender was successful in grabbing the handbag and he got into the passenger seat of a dark blue car.

The man is described as Aboriginal in appearance and around 17-years-old.

Witnesses helped the woman and she was uninjured.

he local music scene lost one of its greatest champions last week.

Zed Vegas Bookings founder, Justin Nichol, passed away on Thursday, November 3 after he collapsed at work and was unable to be revived.

It’s understood he died as a result of a heart condition.

Hundreds of tributes have poured into Mr Nichol’s Facebook page with friends and family describing him as a loyal friend who dedicated his life to live music.

“I’ve been overwhelmed with the love and friendship that Justin has made in his life,” his mother, Sandra Nichol said.

“His passion for music was everything and myself, his dad Mick, and his brothers Ryan and Matt are very proud of our boy.”

Mr Nichol started Zed Vegas Bookings two years ago and was involved in every area of the business, from booking and promotion to working the merchandise stand and acting as tour van driver.

He gave bands the confidence to follow their dreams and even opened up his Penrith home to any of his bands who were in the area, regardless of whether they were touring or not.

Penrith doesn’t have enough jobs to cater for its working population, and of what is available, not many offer the big bucks.

Governments and big business have made vague commitments to bring professional jobs to the west, such as the recent signing of the State and Federal ‘Western Sydney City Deal’.

The deal aims to bring “more jobs closer to home”, but offered little detail on how those jobs were actually going to be created, and what they will look like.

Despite a drop in Penrith’s unemployment rate from 5.41 per cent to 4.13 per cent in June this year, Penrith is suffering from an undeniable jobs deficit.

There are not enough jobs in Penrith to support the level of resident workers, forcing 65,000 people living in the area to travel away for work every day.

A report by economy.id released in September shows of the 100,000 workers living in the Local Government Area, there are just 72,000 jobs.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said Penrith Council is working to deliver better results for the growing working community.

“We have a highly employable and motivated workforce in Penrith who deserve jobs closer to home,” he said.

But if you want a job closer to home, it may not be the higher-paid, and higherskilled job you would find in the city.

According to economy.id, from the 2011 Census, you were 15 times more likely to get a better paying job in the city.

Data showed there were just under 55,000 jobs in the Penrith LGA by 2011, compared to a whopping 395,000 in the City of Sydney at the same time.

Of those, just 14,531 jobs in Penrith (26 per cent) paid over $1250 per week, but in Sydney city over half the workforce were earning at least that, at 212,599.

In Penrith, the top industries were in healthcare, retail and manufacturing and in the city, the workforce was made up primarily of financial, professional, scientific, technical and public administration.

For new job opportunities in Penrith, it seems you’ll have to wait until the western Sydney airport is built in 2025.

In the meantime, the first building in the Sydney Science Park at Luddenham will be completed by 2019, offering jobs in its STEM school.

For Government jobs in the west, the Greater Sydney Commission hope to bring the NSW Planning Department to Parramatta in two years, and possibly the State Government in another 10 years.

Parker Street speed camera one of state’s highest revenue raisers

Plan to “end timetables” labelled a brain snap by State Opposition DALE DRINKWATER

he State Opposition has labelled a plan to “end timetables” in exchange for on-demand public transport services a “brain snap”.

Last week, NSW Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance announced a trial of ‘on-demand’ public transport services, that will scrap a timetable and deliver services when people want them.

Compared to on-demand TV streaming services like Stan and Netflix, the idea has been shot down by Shadow Minister for Transport Jodi McKay. “This is another brain snap from the Baird Government that has no detail, no rationale and no explanation on how it will make public transport a better option to commuters in western Sydney,” she told the Weekender.

“Western Sydney commuters have every right to expect the Government to fix the train overcrowding problems now; not kick the issue down the road to be addressed in a year.”

However, Mr Constance said the Government is calling on industry and tech leaders to get involved and submit expressions of interest to run the trial.

Executive Director of the Centre for Road Safety, Bernard Carlon, said at fixed speed camera locations, deaths on the road had dropped by 91 per cent and injuries by 42 per cent.

A total of 3,389 penalty notices were issued for the Northbound Parker Street, Kingswood speed camera between November 2015 and September 2016, one of the highest revenue raising cameras in

NSW with some $1,019,535 worth of fines issued as a result of the camera.

“Speed is the biggest killer on our roads – there is no such thing as safe speeding,” Mr Carlon said.

“We review every single speed camera every year to make sure they’re saving lives and reducing injuries.”

According to the Centre for Road Safety, speeding remains the greatest cause of death and injuries on our roads, contributing to about 40 per cent of road fatalities. Bright little boy taken far too soon Community to rally behind family after tragic death of Cranebrook toddler DALE DRINKWATER

Cranebrook family has been broken and two parents have been left without their only child, after an unexpected seizure claimed a oneyear-old boy’s life.

Just six days after his first birthday, Hunta James Eichorn was rushed to Westmead Children’s Hospital by air after suffering an unexplained and devastating seizure.

Hunta was unable to be saved, and at 2.30pm on Saturday, November 5, his young parents, Alix and Grant Eichorn, lost their reason to live.

As his devastated parents try to come to terms with their loss, Hunta’s uncle Brett Eichorn remembers a bright young boy, who came after many attempts to start a family.

“To Alix and Grant, Hunta was their miracle baby. His birth followed a traumatic series of unsuccessful pregnancies the couple had endured, and his eventual arrival into their world was welcomed with an outpouring of love and relief,” he said.

“His fiery red hair matched his joyful personality, and it was rare to see him without a huge grin plastered across his face and a giggle escaping his lips.

Hunta James Eichorn “He was full to the brim with personality, and his curiosity, energy and intelligence seemed far beyond his age.

“By his first birthday, he was already walking confidently, and he seemed ready to take on the world.”

But his world was taken from him just days later, and his parents were robbed of their time with him.

Now, amid trying to deal with their loss,

his family will be facing an uncertain future as they address the heavy costs of medical care, funeral planning and time off work.

The cause of Hunta’s seizure is still unknown.

Huge damage bill after fire It’s estimated it will cost Emu Plains business Avida RV close to $1 million to repair the damage from last week’s factory fire.

Just before 5pm on Thursday, November 3, emergency crews were called to the factory after reports of a large fire.

Thick, black smoke was billowing from the David Road premises as fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

“Employees noticed the fire and attempted to extinguish it but were unsuccessful,” a police spokesperson told the Weekender.

“The fire broke out on the north easterly side of the premises and employees worked quickly to remove any incomplete motor homes.”

It’s understood it was too dangerous to enter the building and close to 100 fire fighters were called to assist in getting the fire under control.

There were no reports of injuries but there was significant damage to the structure of the building.

The fire isn’t being treated as suspicious.

Avida RV were unwilling to comment on the incident.

A 15-year-old girl was hauled away by police after an incident at a school earlier this week.

The Daily Telegraph reported that a schoolyard scrap developed between two teenage girls over a mobile phone.

Pictures published by the newspaper showed the 15-year-old surrounded by police officers, being led into a police van with her hands behind her back.

The Telegraph reported police were called to the school after the arrested teen had allegedly stormed into a classroom and ripped off the headscarf of another 15-year-old student before pulling her hair.

The incident happened at a school in Emu Plains.

The arrested girl was taken to Penrith Police Station and was later released.

Fishing grant Penrith City Council will receive a grant of $55,000 from the State Government towards construction of a fishing platform for recreational fishers at Emu Plains through the Recreational Fishing Trust Program.

“With the beautiful Nepean River on our doorstep, recreational fishing is an integral part of our local lifestyle with a large percentage of our residents participating in fishing each year, making it one of our most popular outdoor recreational activities,” said State Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres.

“It is vitally important we invest in infrastructure and programs to support and enhance such a popular and healthy activity as recreational fishing.”

Risky operation to save Ziad’s life Thoughts of locals with 12-year-old ahead of major surgery next week JADE ALIPRANDI

t Clair youngster Ziad Soltani will undergo life saving surgery next week to remove a fast growing brain tumour, with the community rallying behind him.

Over $165,000 has been raised by more than 1900 people for the 12-year-old and his family to help cover the astronomical costs of not only his surgery but the ongoing costs thereafter.

Ziad, who plays rugby league for the St Clair Comets, has his surgery scheduled for this Monday, November 14, with Dr Charlie Teo, who the family say is the only surgeon prepared to take on the risky operation.

While it’s a benign tumour, Ziad was told just last week he would be paralysed within 12 months and dead within five years if the tumour wasn’t taken out.

Family friend Krissy Stimpson, who met Trudy and Amin Soltani through football over five years ago, said she wanted to help in any way possible.

“I helped set up the GoFundMe account – it was really a team effort and I try to give as much as I can to them,” she said.

“From the start, I believed people would help but the amount of people that have been so generous and have gone above

Last Friday morning, KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O jumped on board to help the Soltani’s.

Over $80,000 was raised after the segment aired, with the number still rising.

While the family prepare for Ziad to undergo surgery, they have to pay over $50,000 for Dr Teo and over $50,000 for the hire of the hospital room.

The remaining money will be used to pay for Ziad’s stay in the hospital postoperation and any ongoing medical costs.

Arsonists should receive a 25 year mandatory sentence, and none of the hand wringing, bleeding heart attitude from the do-gooders because they might be 17 years of age or younger. They knew what they were doing and did it deliberately. After almost three weeks from December 24 2001 to January 7 2002 across New South Wales, the ‘Black Christmas fires’, the then Premier Bob Carr sought such a sentence for arsonists, but it was knocked on the head as being too severe. Kids open their eyes to the magic of reading thanks to Story Bus

Students to cook up a storm after winning kitchen contest JADE ALIPRANDI

tudents at St Mary MacKillop Primary School will be cooking their way to a healthy lifestyle after being presented with a fully functioning kitchen kart.

Valued at $25,000, the school won the kitchen kart through Nestle’s Healthy Active Kids program after grandparent of a student at the South Penrith school, Mark Collins, entered.

The teaching kitchen comes with a commercial convection oven, an induction stove top and includes the kitchen sink, clean and grey water waste tanks, lockable cupboards and drawers for security, child safe kitchen tools and utensils, and lockable castor wheels.

School Principal, Michael Siciliano, told the Weekender it’s an amazing tool for students.

“It’s an opportunity to do some cooking in the school as well as an opportunity to focus on healthy aspects of eating,” he said.

“It’s going to create enthusiasm from the students about healthy eating and we’ll be incorporating it into our curriculum.”

As part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival, the moving bus of stories took a tour around the area for students to pick a book to take home as well as have a chat with an author.

Relieving Principal at York Public School, Kristen Barglik, said it helps kids get excited about reading.

“Having the students excited about

“The first-hand experience of an author coming to talk to them is also something they will remember forever.

“It’s extremely beneficial for the students.”

hen thinking about work experience as a Year 10 student in a small country town such as West Wyalong, there aren’t many options.

Well the bush kids definitely didn’t bite the dust because we weren’t afraid to jump out of our comfort zones and travel 10 hours away from home to stay with people we have never met.

Last week, 10 West Wyalong High School students travelled via bus and train all the way to Penrith to be a part of the city workforce for a week.

Full of nerves and no experience with public transportation before, we were all anxious but really excited to meet with our host families and see what the week had in store for us all.

We are very fortunate that the Nepean Rotary Club and the West Wyalong Rotary Club have collaborated for over 15 years to organise this program and show the bush kids around the big city.

As well as being able to come to Penrith, we also got the opportunity to have students from Nepean High School and Caroline Chisholm College come down to West Wyalong.

We showed them what it’s like living in an isolated community and how some students have to travel so far to get to school, sporting activities, doctors appointments and to do grocery shopping.

After the incredible success of our previous “Spring Bride” magazine, The Western Sydney Publishing Group is now running an “Annual Bride” magazine distributed ready for 2017.

They got the chance to gain an agricultural insight into how farming machinery operates and the procedures involved with crops and livestock, which they wouldn’t have had without this program.

Nepean Rotarian, Ken Buttrum, has been a part of the Rotary Exchange program since it started back in 2001.

“The exchange is not only good for the kids but also for their host families and Rotarians to get an appreciation of how each other live,” Mr Buttrum said “They gain friendships they will have for years to come.”

While being in Penrith, we were lucky enough to be shown around the Blue Mountains, Bondi Beach, Sculpture by the Sea, and many other main attractions in and around the Penrith area.

The most valuable part of the experience was gaining a sense of independence being away from home. To really make use of the work experience, we were thrown into the deep-end to make a massive step towards a possible career.

I got the opportunity to work with The Western Weekender, who were extremely welcoming and taught me so much about the industry and gave me the most valuable insight into working in Penrith.

The exchange gives all students involved the chance to gain a wider community experience.

Without the Rotary Exchange program and the help of many selfless people, we would never have received this incredible opportunity.

uring my first few years of running my business, I would often encourage friends and family to start a business. Gradually, though, I found myself saying it less and less, as I realised that it takes a particular temperament, and a clear understanding of exactly what you are ‘getting yourself into’.

There are certainly some really great things about being your own boss. You can set your own hours, there is no ceiling on what you can earn, and you can often choose the location of your work day. Personally I could never go back to working for someone else! But that doesn’t mean there are not some ever-present realities, including the following: 1. You have ultimate responsibility.

You are responsible for the success or failure of your business. You are responsible for staff and your decisions affect their livelihoods as much as yours.

2. You have no income guarantees.

Whatever financial gains you make depends on what you do, as well as

external market forces. Although you might have the potential to earn far more than you made working for someone else, no one is paying your wage while you wait for success to happen.

3. No one works for no one. That is, even though you are ‘your own boss’, your clients and customers dictate your business to a large extent. You have to be responsive to customer needs and take into account other stakeholders’ demands. You absolutely should have boundaries and should not bend to unreasonable demands. But a client’s deadline is generally going to be your deadline – which means to some extent, they ‘own’ your time.

4. Sacrifices have to be made.

Although I am not espousing an unhealthy balance of all work and no play, there are going to be times where your social life will suffer.

Likewise, when you are starting out and funds are lean, you will need to adjust your lifestyle and habits.

oday, thousands of people across the city will be gathering to honour the commitment of those who served our country in conflict, and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Remembrance Day commemorations, held on November 11 at 11am, mark the moment in 1918 when guns fell silent on the western front after four years of non-stop warfare.

Since the end of the first World War, Australian personnel have found themselves in many conflicts including the Second World War, the Korean War, Indonesian Confrontation, Vietnam War, and the First Gulf War. More recently, troops have set foot in the Middle East in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan, and currently in a US-led coalition in Syria.

The 1962 to 1975 Vietnam War spread across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, and is thought to be the longest running conflict in which Australians have been involved.

With around 1,000 people in each battalion, Mr Visinko shared just 10 hectares with up to 5,000 people at the base camps across Vietnam.

While he worked in the ‘cash office’ for the Australian army and away from the front line, it didn’t mean Mr Visinko was safe.

“There were some rockets in Vung Tao but they were far away from the area I was in. Nui Dat was the sharp end, you might say,” he said.

“We got rocketed a couple of times.

There was a hole about 20 metres from my tent.”

Mr Visinko said rockets were generally fired into the Australian camps from Vietnamese troops as a nuisance.

“And then the launchers for the rocket skedaddled before our artillery got onto them, because there would be counterbattery fire going onto them from the moment they launched rockets,” he said.

Commemorations are being held at 11am today at St Marys RSL, Mamre Road, and at Penrith’s Memory Park.

Marina to shine in Penrith

arina Prior is one of Australia’s m o s t beloved per for mers.

F r o m opera to plays and musical theatre there’s not many areas of the entertainment industry that she hasn’t been involved in.

It’s this variety that Marina attributes to her longevity in the industry.

“I think that’s why I’ve kept going for 30-plus years,” she said.

“You have to be able to be adaptable in this country and do lots of different things.

“If you’re willing to continue to learn throughout your life and your career then you’ll continue to gain something from all the different projects that you do.”

2016 has been another busy year for Marina, having just finished up a concert tour with Australian tenor Mark Vincent along with a role as Baroness Schraeder in the stage production of ‘The Sound of Music’.

Though it’s a lot to take on for any performer Marina admits she thrives on the busy schedule and the musical theatre environment.

“I love the discipline of eight shows

a week and the camaraderie that you develop,” she said.

“You become like a family when you’re together that much.”

Marina’s next project will see her team up with one of Australia’s best opera singers Teddy Tahu Rhodes – who’s been described as ‘Opera’s Man Mountain’ – for the duo’s first performance at The Joan.

The show will include a mix of opera arias, musical theatre hits and well-loved popular songs.

It’s not the first time the talented pair have performed together on stage.

“We did some concerts with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra last year and they were fantastic, so I’m really looking forward to it,” Marina said.

“I know him quite well as a colleague, so I’m very comfortable working with him.”

Heading into Christmas Marina will take the stage for one of her most well known roles as part of the star studded line-up at ‘Carols by Candlelight’.

It’s a family tradition for the performer; one that has been passed down through the generations.

“I’m from Melbourne so I’ve been there sitting on the lawn as a kid watching it, never dreaming that I would be up there one day,” she said.

“It’s my family’s Christmas tradition as well. My kids have been to ‘Carols’ since before they were born on stage with me and none of them have missed a ‘Carols

by Candlelight’.

hirsty Merc have been one of the busiest bands in the country, performing over 90 shows in the past 12 months.

With some of their shows already sold out, fans should be ecstatic for what their ‘Shifting Gears’ tour has to offer audiences.

During their tour, which started in October and will run until autumn 2017, Thirsty Merc will reach their 15-year milestone since forming in 2002.

60s icon revives the classics in visit to Penrith KATE REID

n the 60s he appeared on ‘Bandstand’ and ‘The Johnny O’Keefe Show’, and now John ‘JR’ Rowles is heading to Penrith to give audiences a taste of his decades-long musical career.

The New Zealand born performer grew up on the music of Elvis and Little Richard and, after leaving school at 15, worked as a lumberjack before arriving in Australia at the age of 17.

It was a smart career move for the singer who within months had made a name for himself within the music industry.

John went on to have top 10 hits including ‘Hush, Not a Word to Mary’, ‘One Day’, ‘The Pain Goes on Forever’ and ‘M’lady’, although he’s best known for the 1970 track ‘Cheryl Moana Marie’.

Audiences can expect to enjoy some of John’s classic hits along with his favourite tracks from a range of styles

including opera, Latin music and tracks from some of the greatest musicals ever written.

John Rowles will be performing at the Evan Theatre at Panthers on Friday, November 25 at 8pm. Tickets are $37.40.

njoy a beautiful night out at the opera when Penrith Symphony Orchestra presents ‘La sonnambula’ at The Joan.

Translating to ‘The Sleepwalker’, the opera tells the story of Amina, an orphan who has plans to wed the rich landowner Elvino.

Unfortunately the road to wedded bliss takes a sharp turn when Amina, a sleepwalker, is discovered on the couch of Count Rodolfo.

The misunderstanding sees her beloved Elvino overcome by jealousy as he decides to call off the wedding.

But the power of music saves their

relationship when Amina is heard singing of her love for Elvino while out sleepwalking.

‘La sonnambula’ was written towards the end of Bellini’s life and is one of his most well-regarded operas. It’s also one of the leading operas in the bel canto tradition.

This will be Penrith Symphony Orchestra’s first complete opera-inconcert performance.

Prepare for outrageous fun and crude laughs in this latest comedy release.

Brothers Mike (played by ‘Pitch Perfect’ star Adam Devine) and Dave (played by ‘Bad Neighbours’ star Zac Efron) are fans of the hardpartying lifestyle.

But when it comes time for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding they’re looking for the perfect ‘respectable’ dates to avoid embarrassing their family.

Unfortunately their plan backfires when they team up with Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), two uncontrollable women who end up outsmarting and out-partying the pair.

The film is very loosely based on

the Stangle brothers whose Craigslist ad looking for dates to their cousin’s wedding became a viral sensation.

The film’s creators decided to elaborate on the story to create a full length comedy feature.

While the film received mixed reviews the cast were praised by critics, in particular Aubrey Plaza who plays the wild and weird character to a tee.

‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’ is the first film release for TV comedy director Jake Szymanski.

If you love screwball comedies featuring 20-somethings getting into strange scenarios then this movie is definitely worth checking out.

‘Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’ includes three unique game modes including a new Zombies experience which allows gamers to immerse themselves in a unique and entertaining narrative.

There’s groundbreaking innovations, never-before-seen multi-planetary environments and new weaponry.

The aliens are back in this week’s new release ‘Arrival’.

Earth has become home to a group of mysterious spacecraft that have touched down in different locations across the globe. To work out exactly who they are, and what they’re doing here, an elite

team are sent to investigate.

Expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is recruited by the military to head up the group and assist in the race against time to find answers and prevent global war.

The film features an all star cast including Jeremy Renner as mathematician Ian Donnelly and Forest Whitaker as Colonel Weber.

‘Arrival’ has received almost unani-

mously positive reviews from critics and has been described by movie review site Rotten Tomatoes as a “must-see experience for fans of thinking person’s sci-fi”.

There’s been no shortage of alien encounter films over the years but, by all accounts, this stands out as one of the best.

It’s amazing to believe that Sutcliffe has been in the industry for 50 years, including 37 years at the Nine Network.

Body, Mind and Spirit

TAFE Western Sydney ‘Primordium’ is an exhibition showcasing the 2016 graduating and continuing students of the Diploma of Visual Arts from Nepean Arts and Design Centre at TAFE Western Sydney.

The celebratory season is unquestionably the major focal point within the annual calendar for Blue Mountains gallery Rick Rutherford’s Country with 2016 marking the business’ 10th anniversary of their Christmas Collections.

Officially launched on Saturday, October 29, the displays are now open to everyone, seven days a week, all the way through to Christmas Eve. Rick Rutherford said locals can come in and enjoy the Christmas showings.

“Over the years we have gained a reputation for offering one of the most unique Christmas ranges anywhere,” he said.

“People come from all over the region and even interstate and overseas to see our annual Christmas showings.

“Each of the 10 rooms of our Lawson heritage gallery is decked to the nines, as the entire building is transformed into a veritable Christmas wonderland.”

Rick Rutherford’s Country imports a huge cache of festive goods from many parts of the world and many are unique to the store in Australia.

The Body, Mind and Spirit Expo will be held this Sunday, November 13.

Running from 10am to 5pm, locals can enjoy the free event at Penrith RSL Club.

Osteoarthritis and exercise – how important is it?

Many people with joint pain stop exercising altogether, but losing weight with the right routine can provide huge benefits...

exercise is the most dominant non-pharmacological intervention recommended for the treatment and management of osteoarthritis. Exercise is implemented to help improve joint range of motion, improve joint stability and muscle strength in the surrounding areas and help with weight loss.

A structured progressive strength training program that targets muscle hypertrophy will help to improve function and decrease pain, particularly in load bearing joints such as the hips and knees.

Swimming is a great way to get started on an exercise program if pain levels are too high initially. Swimming can help to increase strength in a non-weight bearing environment before moving to a land based exercise program.

Weight is the biggest modifiable factor to decrease pain associated with osteoarthritis. Being overweight impacts how much weight the joint has to sustain with each step taken; particularly with the hips and knees. Each additional kilogram of body mass increases the compressive load placed on the knee by roughly four kilograms. Evidence based research suggests to decrease pain; the target weight loss percentage is 7.7 per cent of total body weight.

To decrease your pain related to osteoarthritis, don’t stop exercise, seek a structured progressive land based training program from an Exercise Physiologist.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions of an entire joint resulting from a gradual loss of cartilage.

Cartilage is the protective cushion between the bones and when this breaks down, bone overgrowth occurs and fluid filled pockets called subchondral cysts result in inflammation and stiffness within the entire joint.

The most common joints to be affected by osteoarthritis are our hips, knees and hands, with hips and knees causing the most pain due to their weight bearing load.

Fundamentally osteoarthritis causes chronic pain, reduces physical function, causes muscle wastage and diminishes quality of life.

Due to the pain associated with osteoarthritis, most people feel that exercise will make their pain worse and therefore opt to rest from exercise. It is important to understand why exercise helps osteoarthritis and what exercise you should do to improve your symptoms.

As the weather heats up, the risk of heat stroke in pets rises.

Heat stroke is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees – this can cause problems with blood clotting and organ function. Heat stroke can result in shock, internal bleeding, organ failure and eventual death.

Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin. In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on a 45 degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions.

As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the summer months. The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees.

Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm. Never let a dog do strenuous exercise when the temperature is above 25 degrees. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during summer months.

If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you can provide a

child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets.

You can provide ice blocks to entertain and cool a pet in the summer months. A large ice block may last for some hours.

This can be made by freezing a four litre ice-cream container and then placing the ice block outside in the dog’s drinking bowl for them to lick as it melts.

It is even more fun if some dried liver treats are frozen in the ice-block.

Get your child in the water and start the learning process Education and retention is important when it comes to swim safety, with parents urged to get their children familiar with water from an early age...

As we head towards summer, one of the best things a parent can do to keep their child safer around water is to teach them about water safety as soon as possible, with early swimming lessons and education.

Education should start very early, with parents consistently talking to children about the rules – never go near the pool without an adult, never climb the pool fence, let an adult know if another child goes near the pool alone, swim between the flags at the beach, be careful in the bath, etc.

Overall, make it fun to promote retention of the water safety messages covered.

There are some great swim safety education resources available through the ‘Kids Alive, Do The 5’ website.

Alternatively, we are now providing water safety visits to pre-schools and childcare centres, where we read books and sing songs about water safety with our mascot, Paddles the Platypus. If you would like us to come and visit your child’s centre, just contact me!

Swim Australia recommends starting swimming lessons from six months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this.

Fear of the water is acquired, so make sure baby has regular baths and showers from newborn, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Your six-month-old will then accept the water more readily, and with less fear, when starting lessons.

In addition to safety, benefits for babies introduced to the water early include the

development of gross motor skills and improved strength, coordination and balance, plus the warm water combined with gentle exercise will relax your baby and stimulate their appetite – many parents report that their babies usually eat and sleep better after swimming. Plus it’s great bonding time for parent and baby!

The beaches are heating up and the longer summer days are calling!

If you are struggling to trade in your sweat pants for a pair of denim shorts and a slinky cami, maybe a hint of colour is just what you need!

I love my pale skin and I love having gorgeous glowy tanned skin even more!

A fresh coat of tan always manages to make you feel skinnier and healthier.

The only healthy kind of tan though is a sunless one and that comes from a handy bottle.

The formulas on the market today are so high tech you can find multiple benefits that come along with your instant glow.

Try St Tropez, a foolproof classic mouse formula. An easy to apply rich golden tan this one takes a bit of prep but the results are flawless!

Step 1: First use a body exfoliator or polish to remove any dead skin cells and create a smooth base for a longer lasting tan.

Step 2: Shave or even wax your legs for a super sleek look!

Where do you get your protein from and is it enough?

Everyone talks about protein, but how much do you really need? This week, we bust some protein myths and misunderstandings...

Protein sure does seem to be the macronutrient of the moment.

Everywhere you look you’ll see high protein diets and products that have ‘added protein’. Anyone would think we were in the middle of a protein deficiency epidemic.

The reality is that many of us are ill informed when it comes to protein. So this week I wanted to bust some myths around this misunderstood nutrient.

We need large amounts of protein There’s many areas of nutrition where people are not getting what they need but protein is generally not one of them.

The current recommended daily protein intake for the average adult male is 64 grams and 46 grams for the average adult female (these figures will change based on age, height and weight).

So unless your food intake is greatly restricted it’s highly likely you’ll be consuming enough protein.

Protein is only found in animal products If you’re a vegetarian or vegan you’d be very familiar with the ‘but where do you

get your protein?’ question. There seems to be this ongoing myth that protein isn’t found in plants, or if it is it’s only in very small amounts.

In reality nothing could be further from the truth. Nuts, legumes, seeds, grains, tofu and vegetables like peas and mushrooms all contain significant amounts of protein.

If you don’t consume animal products include a variety of these foods into your diet to ensure you’re getting all the essential amino acids.

If you’re exercising you need a protein supplement For those who are doing excessive amounts of exercise a protein shake or

bar may help to meet increased protein requirements. But for most people they’re not a necessity.

Focus instead on including a range of high protein, nutrient rich foods into your diet and if you’re looking for a post workout protein hit that won’t cost a fortune try having a simple glass of milk instead.

Protein builds muscle This one is partially true. Yes, muscle is made of protein, but consuming protein is not going to build up those muscles unless it’s coupled with muscle strengthening exercise.

So unfortunately you’re going to have to put in the hard yards to get that toned body you’re after.

With only limited production due to the grape selection criteria, this one has a $150 price tag to enjoy with a platter of hard and aged cheeses for Christmas, New Year or other celebrations, to share at the table with a rare to medium-rare rib-eye or sirloin steak, or consider as a very special Christmas gift for a VIP red wine buff.

One to note: Although the first vines were planted only in the 1980s, Sauvignon Blanc has now become Tasmania’s third most widely planted wine grape.

And a nice example of the quality that it’s risen to is the 2015 Roaring 40s Sauvignon Blanc of Riversdale Estate.

At 11am, on November 11 1918, the guns on the Western Front in Europe fell silent after four years of warfare.

No one really knows how many died in World War I. The figure is somewhere between a staggering nine and 13 million people.

That’s hard to take in isn’t it?

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is an important time to remember those who have died, not just in World War I, but the many wars that followed and that continue in our world.

See what the Bible in the book of Isaiah says about the end of war. “In the last days, the mountain of the Lord will be established as chief among the mountains. Many will say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord... He will teach us his ways, so we may walk in his paths.”

“He will judge between the nations and settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into ploughshares, their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.”

This is something we can all look

forward to, not just the end of war but peace with God. Peace on Earth. Peace with each other.

Yet, this is not just something for the future. It is something you can begin to experience today! See what Jesus said; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give

he Western Sydney Wanderers are now unbeaten in four straight matches after they picked up a well-deserved point against Perth Glory last Sunday night.

Having to come from behind in the second half, a Brendon Santalab strike secured a share of the points for the Wanderers after Nicolas Martinez opened the scoring in the first minute.

Martinez’s goal was the fastest in Wanderers history, with the Argentine beating Santalab’s 2014 record of 42 seconds with a well-placed strike from outside the box.

It was the 29-year-old’s first goal for Western Sydney, which came off the back of a sweeping move from downfield after 31 seconds.

Unfortunately for the Wanderers, the lead didn’t last as Perth equalised only four minutes later through Alex Grant.

The rest of the half became a battle of attrition as both sides settled in for a physical battle.

After the break the match stayed true to form with a limited number of scoring chances as the two teams fought hard to wrestle control.

It was Perth that broke through early with Andy Keogh putting the Glory ahead in the 51st minute.

Fortunately, Santalab came to Western Sydney’s rescue soon after, scoring the equaliser after some great build-up play.

Mitch Nichols started the play as he drew two defenders before he found Martinez with an excellent pass. The Argentine turned his defender before playing a pinpoint ball to Santalab for the striker to make it 2-2.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said picking up another point in a tough city like Perth was a pleasing outcome.

“We came back after 2-1 down away from home, so it’s a good point,” he said.

“Of course you want to win every match but step by step we’re improving, that’s for sure.”

The Wanderers will battle fifth-placed Melbourne Victory this Saturday night.

enrith’s Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre will host some of the country’s largest and most important tennis events this

month.

Beginning this weekend (November 12-14), Nepean District Tennis Association (NDTA) will host the NSW Junior Development Series (JDS) State Finals at the Castlereagh Road-based facility.

The JDS is the largest participation tennis event in NSW, which sees players from all over the state play-off for a position in the prestigious State Final each year.

“Around 350 of the state’s best junior tennis players and their families will be visiting the area to participate for three days,” NDTA CEO, Chris Woodland said.

From November 25-29, Woodriff Gardens will also play host to the Nepean Summer Platinum Open.

The event is part of the Australian Money Tournament (AMT) series that Tennis Australia runs as a lead-in to the Australian Open playoffs, held in Melbourne during December.

Mansour to miss start of NRL season

eteran St Clair sprint car driver Jason Bates has used his experience to his advantage by taking out the NSW Wingless Sprint Championship.

Regarded as one of the favourites heading into the NSW Championship, the local resident was able to shake off that pressure by qualifying in pole position for the feature race at Valvoline Raceway before going on to lead every lap to be crowned NSW Champion.

Although Bates finished on top, he certainly had to work hard for the win with eventual runner-up Jeff Thomas chasing his tail the whole way.

But, despite the immense pressure, Bates managed to keep his cool to cross the line in first place.

“To win a NSW Championship is a great honour, but to do it against such a large and competitive field of drivers makes it all the more special,” Bates said.

“I felt a bit of pressure leading into the event, as I was regarded as one of the favourites, but I just had to not think too far ahead than my heat races and then focus on the feature race, which was what I did.

Bates, whose previous career highlights included a third-place finish in the 2015 Queensland Title at Archerfield Speedway and a seventh-place finish in last season’s Australian Title in Toowoomba, was quick to acknowledge his supporters that made his NSW Championship glory possible.

“Without the support of my wife Karen, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do, and it means the world to me that we were able to achieve this feat of NSW Champion together,” Bates said.

“Apart from Karen, I have to say a massive thanks to my Dad for all of his ongoing support and my Mum and mother-in-law for looking after the kids during the race meeting, along with the rest of my crew for everything they do – because it’s a whole team effort.”

The 26-year-old suffered an ACL injury in a training session with the Kangaroos in England last week.

Mansour left the training field in significant pain and scans later confirmed the worst, ruling him out of the rest of the Four Nations and most definitely the start of the NRL season.

The Origin winger reportedly suffered the injury after a collision with Josh Dugan during a game of touch football.

It’s the news Panthers coach Anthony Griffin was dreading with three of his top players away in England with the Kangaroos – Mansour, Matt Moylan and Trent Merrin.

The Panthers had already been dealt an off-season injury blow with hooker Peter Wallace suffering a hand injury in a rock fishing accident, resulting in surgery.

Wallace will be fit to start the season in March but Mansour may not return until May or even later.

Due to blood clot fears with flying, Mansour will remain in England for at least the next week until swelling in his knee subsides. He will be booked in for surgery upon his return.

In other Panthers news, club officials have confirmed reserve grade players Wellington Albert, Stanton Albert, Andrew Heffernan and AFL convert Josh Hall will not return in 2017.

Baseball Penrith baseballers shine at U23 World Cup in Mexico NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith baseballers Jacob Younis, Guy Edmonds and Zac Shepherd have walked away with silver medals along with a number of individual accolades at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U23 World Cup in Mexico.

The talented local trio were members of the Australian U23’s team, who fell to Japan 10-3 in the World Championship Game on Monday morning.

Despite out-hitting Japan 10-7, two big innings from the world’s top baseball nation proved the difference with the Japanese scoring four runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth inning.

Australia’s performance throughout the duration of the tournament was highly commendable, with the side not only picking up a well-deserved silver but also 551 WBSC World Ranking Points, which will no doubt come in handy leading into the next international competition cycle.

Following their historic silver medal, members of the Australian team also won the majority of individual awards at the tournament including Younis and Edmonds.

Blue Sox, took out the award for Most Runs Scored (17), was named the tournament’s Hitting Leader (16 hits, 7 RBIs, .571 batting average, 25 total bases) and was given a place on the All-World Team as Shortstop.

While fellow Penrith Baseball Club and Blue Sox teammate Guy Edmonds was also named on the All-World Team as Designated Hitter following a batting average of .367, 10RBIs and 11 hits.

Penrith Baseball Club President, Logan Glover, said he and the entire Penrith baseball community were very impressed with how Younis, Edmonds and Shepherd all performed in Mexico.

“We are all extremely proud of Jacob, Guy and Zac… they performed outstandingly against the best in the world,” he said.

After coming into the World Cup with a World Ranking of 13, Australia punched well above their weight during the two week tournament – recording victories against significant baseball nations including Chinese Taipai and Korea.

“Australia were the 13th seed in the World Cup, and to finish with silver was an awesome effort,” Glover said.

“It shows the talent we have here in Australia will hold us in good stead for the Olympic Games in 2020.”

CRICKET: English cricket captain Eoin Morgan will return to the Sydney Thunder for the first half of the upcoming Big Bash League competition.

he Penrith Panthers have released popular prop Jeremy Latimore on the eve of the NRL pre-season.

The 29-year-old, who played 75 games for the Panthers after joining the club in 2013, will link up with reigning premiers Cronulla in 2017.

Panthers boss Phil Gould said it’s disappointing to be losing the likable forward.

“It’s too easy sometimes to say that rugby league is a business and we just have to make decisions and move on,” he said.

“But some decisions really do suck. This one sucks.

“We are really disappointed to be losing Jeremy. He has been wonderful for our club both on and off the field. We can’t thank him enough for the contribution he has made during his four seasons at the Panthers.”

The Weekender first revealed several months ago that Latimore was unlikely to be at the Panthers next season.

Meanwhile, Penrith have been dealt a huge off-season blow with powerhouse winger Josh Mansour suffering a serious knee injury.
