Parking goes high tech New technology will help drivers find available parking spots in busy CBD NICOLA BARTON

arking in Penrith is set to go high tech with the installation of stateof-the-art parking sensors throughout the City Centre.

The Integrations Parking Management System (IPMS) will provide real-time data of parking utilisation and allow motorists to find available parking spaces through the launch of a new app.

Duncan Solutions has been appointed for the supply, installation and maintenance of the IPMS for a total cost of $1.5 million.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Council has already successfully trialled a similar parking sensor system in the Edwards Place Car Park.

“These have proven highly effective with more spaces turning over throughout the day, providing people with better access to local shops and services,” Cr Fowler said.

“Council is committed to the smart growth of Penrith, working to shape a city that is easy to access and get around, with a walkable urban centre, green spaces and parking that is conveniently located and connected to services and businesses.”

With a new car park underway on North Street, together with plans for more parking on Soper Place, Cr Fowler said Council

will add over 800 extra parking spaces to the City Centre.

“Smarter parking systems are one key element towards achieving this vision,” he said.

With real-time data available, Council hope this will also create better accuracy for parking rangers.

But more importantly it will help drivers find available parking spots quicker and easier.

Deputy Mayor Greg Davies said the data will allow Council to know where the sorest spots are for future development.

“I think the app is going to be a real help in allowing the community to find out where the available parking spaces are,” he said.

“We’ve done a fair bit for parking but more needs to be done.”

The project is part of Council’s Penrith City Centre Parking Strategy, which aims to improve the supply and turnover of parking in the City Centre.

Installation of the in-ground parking sensors is set for both timed on-street and off-street parking spaces as well as Judges Car Park.

Now Clearys must deliver I n the space of just a few weeks, the Clearys have become one of rugby league’s most powerful families.

Certainly, their influence at the Penrith Panthers and in the local community is now immense.

Back in late September, 20-year-old Nathan Cleary signed a massive new deal with the Panthers, becoming the club’s first million dollar player and locking in his future until the end of 2024.

And now it’s been confirmed that his father Ivan, sacked by the Panthers just three years ago, is returning to the club on a five-year deal.

It is certainly not the first time a father has coached his son in the NRL. In fact, it was done right here at Penrith and with premiership success to boot when John Lang oversaw a squad that included his son Martin in 2003.

But never before has their been a more high profile father and son duo.

On paper and based on history, the high price tag of the Cleary double deal almost makes no sense.

Nathan is a brilliant player, but his new deal is based on expectation versus what he’s delivered so far – he has what it takes, but at 20 he is far from a fully developed footballer.

Ivan meanwhile has a winning percentage that is far from spectacular, but his reputation is superb and with a squad very capable of competing for a premiership at his disposal, anything could happen. But again, it is all about hope.

However, whether the price tag is justified is irrelevant – if the Panthers hadn’t taken a gamble on the duo, another club would have. Simple as that.

Either way this is not a case of the

It seems the path to re-signing Nathan and completing the deal to secure Ivan was long and arduous, but the hard work hasn’t even started yet.

Ivan spoke this week of “unfinished business”, and that is solid motivation to ensure that success immediately follows his return.

The Panthers desperately need to have a good season in 2019 to ensure the critics remain relatively silent.

Both Clearys will be eager to make that happen – they are a family that believe integrity is critical in everything you do and there is no question that the integrity of Ivan has been a little rocked through this process.

Winning usually solves everything and it won’t be long before the drama surrounding how Cleary ended up back at Penrith will be forgotten, in fact it’ll most likely fade with every two competition points the side secures.

As for the Tigers, I’m struggling to feel sorry for a side that is crying foul about a coach wanting to leave his contract early considering the irony that they only signed Cleary after they themselves terminated Jason Taylor just three matches into the 2017 season. The club wasn’t so high and mighty about contracts back then.

The wider rugby league community’s anger towards Cleary has been astonishing considering how often the reverse situation plays out, with coaches being sacked by clubs almost like contracts don’t exist.

From the Penrith side of the fence, the club has shown its teeth through this process and if a little mud comes its way, so be it. For a long time the Panthers have been treated as a second class team and often a soft touch, so the fact that the club aggressively chased Cleary and won is something to crow about.

Cleary’s return could well prove to be a master stroke by the club’s management team and Board.

He will be comfortably welcomed back by the fan base who never wanted him sacked in the first place.

And given Cleary has had the last laugh, I am sure the relationship with General Manager Phil Gould will sort itself out, even if the mainstream NRL media would love for it not to.

Gould has been a brilliant administrator at the Panthers but the sacking of Cleary three years ago was a silly move. The coach now gets his redemption.

Through all of this, we’ve been reminded of one thing: nothing is impossible in rugby league.

Heartbroken: Queen of Hearts to fold four years after launching in Penrith TROY DODDS

enrith-based child sexual abuse and domestic violence support service Queen of Hearts Foundation will close its doors.

The four-member Board has distributed a proposal to its members to fold the organisation at its next meeting and anticipates majority support.

The Board said the Queen of Hearts Foundation has become increasingly financially unsustainable, four years after it first launched in Penrith.

A planned restructure from a service orientated not-for-profit charity run almost entirely on community donations to a pre-funded program model with timeframes and monitored outcomes could not be successfully implemented by a board of volunteers, all of whom are small business owners in the Penrith community.

The Board has been unable to fill the part-time volunteer CEO position vacated when Queen of Hearts Foundation founder Michele Ellery resigned from the role in March. The major fundraiser, a charity ball in July, also failed to raise sufficient funds.

Queen of Hearts Foundation was established in 2014 by current Penrith Citizen of

the Year Ms Ellery and operates from the old Penrith Council chambers building in Henry Street.

A Board spokesperson thanked Ms Ellery for her tireless efforts and passion in raising awareness for the needs of survivors of child sexual abuse and domestic violence.

“Everyone involved in the Queen of Hearts Foundation is proud to have been part of such a high profile organisation and is disappointed to have to make this decision,” the spokesperson said.

“However, we are realistic and know that a charity that struggles to keep its doors open week to week cannot provide the ongoing support and services our customers need.”

Speaking exclusively to the Weekender, Ms Ellery said she’s proud that Queen of Hearts was able to help so many people.

“When I started Queen of Hearts in 2014, I planned to help men, women, and children who had experienced domestic violence trauma or trauma from childhood sexual abuse,” she said.

“The Foundation worked well, and I know Queen of Hearts helped hundreds of people while I was there.”

Surplus funds will be donated to the national Bravehearts Foundation and unfulfilled grants will be returned to their respective government agencies.

It’s a hit: Locals give Yandhai Nepean Crossing tick of approval at grand opening TROY DODDS

housands of people have put on their walking shoes and tried out the new Yandhai Nepean Crossing, which was officially opened by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian last Sunday.

The new $50 million pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Nepean River has been largely welcomed by the local community, which previously had to deal with the narrow and dangerous Victoria Bridge.

Protesters arguing about the Windsor Bridge embarrassingly tried to disrupt last Sunday’s opening but the rude interruption did little to hurt the celebration.

“This new bridge is world class and it is very exciting to see it come to life and improve connections for pedestrians and cyclists,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The Yandhai Nepean Crossing will be an essential link between the beautiful Nepean and Blue Mountains regions. Both the design and name of the bridge has been based on community feedback and I know it will be an asset for the region for years to come.”

Hospital shooter not guilty Injured police officer “bitterly disappointed” with verdict

Temperatures are set to soar in Penrith today as the warmest weather since February arrives – an early indication of the blistering summer ahead.

It’s predicted to reach 38 degrees in Penrith today (Friday, November 2) while temperatures will hover around the low 30’s for most of next week.

NSW Ambulance and the Bureau of Meteorology are advising people of all ages to take care and avoid the extreme heat.

“It’s important that people are alert to the symptoms associated with heat exhaustion in themselves or others, especially young children and the elderly,” NSW Ambulance Chief Superintendent, Alan Morrison said.

“These include nausea, faintness, dizziness, loss of appetite, weakness, headache, and vomiting.

“Heat can kill which is why it’s so important to stay hydrated and look out for the elderly, the young and pets.”

Mr Morrison said within an hour, the temperature inside a car parked in the sun on a 35 degree day can reach highs of 47 degrees or more.

“Never leave children or animals in a car unattended even if you think it’s only going to be for a minute. This can lead to fatal consequences even with a window open,” he said.

he former nurse and drug addict who shot a police officer and a security guard at Nepean Hospital in 2016 has been found not guilty on the grounds of mental illness.

Michael de Guzman was facing 11 charges relating to the horrific incident almost three years ago.

On Tuesday, Judge Christopher Robison found him not guilty but ordered he be detained in custody because “he could be a danger to the public”. The Mental Health Tribunal will now decide when he will be released.

Police officer Luke Warburton almost died when de Guzman shot the dog handler with his own gun in Nepean’s Emergency Department.

It came after de Guzman had threatened to kill a doctor and Sergeant Warburton intervened.

Security guard Barry Jennings was also shot in the leg as the emergency at the hospital unfolded.

Sergeant Warburton has had numerous surgeries and will suffer lifelong injuries as a result of the incident.

“We are bitterly disappointed with the outcome today,” Sergeant Warburton said outside court on Tuesday.

“I’ve got lifelong injuries as a result of

While there had been no dispute over de Guzman having a mental illness, the prosecution argued he was responsible for his actions because he had been using the drug ‘ice’.

The Judge found that while he had used

‘ice’ for years, de Guzman returned negative readings prior to the incident, and was exhibiting delusions at the time of the shooting.

De Guzman’s lawyer, Eidan Havas, said he could not guarantee his client would not turn to drugs again.

“The only things certain are death and taxes,” Mr Havas said.

New chapter for Library Builders appointed to undertake $842,000 upgrade of key local facility â&#x20AC;&#x153;The refurbishment will include a newly designed and positioned Research Room that will house our local studies and specialist collections,â&#x20AC;? the spokesperson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This will have an incorporated training space so the library can deliver programs to the public such as Tech Savvy Seniors classes, family history and resume writing workshops.â&#x20AC;?

Every year the influx of Year 12 students leaves the library at full capacity, with students sometimes sitting on the floor as a result. With the new upgrades, the space will be redesigned to maximise the area and accommodate additional study desks and quiet spaces.

Council hopes these updates will ensure the library is equipped with the latest technologies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the rise in computer-based services and the provision of a robust Wi-Fi network for the benefit of patrons, the traditional â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;unpluggedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; library of hard copy books and shelving has been evolving and will continue to expand online and to more computer-based services,â&#x20AC;? the spokesperson said.

Works will be staged so that the library can remain open during normal business hours, but there may be some disruptions during the process.

enrith Library is set to receive a facelift as Penrith Council moves to appoint builders to refurbish the facility.

After months of deliberation, Trinity Quality Pty Ltd has been selected to makeover the centre, which will see a variety of upgrades to individual and collaborative study spaces as well as the implementation of storage and IT rooms.

The total cost of the impressive upgrade is $841,888.

A report to councillors at Monday nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ordinary meeting stated that the upgrades would benefit staff and the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Council is undertaking the Penrith Library Refurbishment Project to provide additional public space and to create a more spacious and conducive working environment for the library staff and members of the public,â&#x20AC;? the report said.

The scope of work also includes new carpet and the construction of five staff toilets, break out areas and an office for the Library Services Manager. Existing furniture will also be replaced.

A Council spokesperson said the library is an important community space and deserves to be modernised.

Man jailed after sending lewd messages to woman

A man who targeted a random woman, sending her lewd messages, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison.

Michael Jeffrey Lyons will spend at least the next five months behind bars after he was convicted of using a carriage service to menace or harass.

Penrith Local Court heard Lyons used voice, text and Facebook messages to contact the woman, who was unknown to him, even going as far as to seek her out at her business address.

The court was told while there were “no threats of violence”, there were “clearly verbalisations of a sexual nature”.

His lawyer said Lyons suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, was unmedicated at the time and taking ice and heroin, but that his “state of mind was much clearer” since he has been in custody and back on his medication.

He asked Magistrate Stephen Corry not to impose a “crushing sentence” on the father-of-two, who was arrested on September 22 when he failed to turn up to court to face the charges the week before.

Magistrate Corry told Lyons, who has previously served terms of imprisonment, there would have been “significant emotional harm... wrought on the victim” despite the absence of any threats of harm.

He was sentenced to a six months nonparole period and afterwards a recognisance release order, where he will be subject to supervision.

Man may be in jail for dying mother’s final months of life

A man whose father died while he was in custody may see history repeat itself after he was denied bail for allegedly committing further dishonesty offences.

Anthony Holland may not be at liberty for the last three months of his terminally ill mother’s life after Magistrate Stephen Corry refused his release last Thursday.

The prosecution opposed bail when

Holland fronted Penrith Local Court via video link, saying there were unacceptable risks of him failing to appear and committing further serious offences.

His lawyer told the court Holland was in stage one of a residential rehabilitation program and went to the drug court twice a week.

He said his client had recently moved house and was no longer residing with drug users, arguing if he wasn’t granted bail he wouldn’t be able to receive his morphine injection or be with his dying mother.

However Magistrate Corry agreed he posed an unacceptable risk to the community.

His matter was adjourned to the Parramatta drug court.

Mother could be heading to jail if she drives again

A mother-of-eight who refuses to stay out of a motor vehicle has been told one more strike and she will land in jail.

Wearing a green Adidas hoodie, black tights and thongs, Nicole Green fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with three counts of driving while disqualified.

The court heard on one occasion Green was caught driving one of her children to the doctors, and on another occasion, going to buy milk, while the third offence caused a “minor accident”.

Her lawyer said Green would have been eligible to apply to get her licence reinstated, due to the new legislation, had it not been for her fresh offending.

She said she has since sold her vehicle, had moved house to be walking distance to school and was committed to doing her time off the road.

Magistrate Stephen Corry was scathing.

“Children or no children, you can go to full time jail for driving while disqualified,” he said.

“Three strikes and you’re out – this is the second time you’ve been given the opportunity of an [Intensive Correction

Order]. You need to stop and think when confronted with a problem,” he added, saying her driving was an “impulsive decision rather than thinking of some sort of alternative”.

She was convicted, handed a six month ICO and disqualified for 12 months on each count.

Fitness enthusiast caught drink driving on way to gym

A four times Mr Australia body building champion has been barred from driving after he was nabbed drink driving.

Constantinos Demetriou’s lawyer told Penrith Local Court his client had “got caught up” in the opioid epidemic after suffering a few injuries during his time competing in the United States, which had led to “severe anxiety”.

He said on the day in question, Demetriou, 46, woke at 4am, went to the fridge, ate some chicken and drank wine from the bottle to “dull the pain” then went back to bed.

He woke again at 9am and drove to the gym, but was pulled over along the way.

His lawyer said he was “very remorseful and very embarrassed” but was trying to get “back on his feet”.

Magistrate Stephen Corry took into account it was a random breath test and the reading was towards the lower end of mid-range, but issued a parting warning to the fitness enthusiast.

“The last thing you want to be doing if you have mental health issues is treating yourself with alcohol,” he said.

He was convicted, fined $300 and disqualified for five months and two days.

Stealing matter adjourned for man to get legal advice

Beau Jay Arapui Knight has faced Penrith Local Court over allegations of stealing.

Knight is accused of pilfering close to $1000 worth of goods from supermarkets and a clothing store.

He is also charged with entering Penrith

train station without a ticket. His matter was adjourned to November 8 in order for him to seek legal advice.

Speeding drink driver given stern warning by magistrate

A lead foot driver sprung speeding in Londonderry has been slapped with a $500 fine and ordered off the road for three months.

The 29-year-old narrowly avoided a longer stint on the sidelines after he also failed a breath test, recording a reading of 0.053.

The court heard the man had thought he had finished work for the day and consumed four beers, before he was called back to do another job.

His lawyer pointed out it was a very low reading and it was his first drink driving matter in 12 years of holding a licence.

Magistrate Stephen Corry handed him a 12-month non conviction bond for the drink driving charge, given it was only slightly above the legal alcohol limit of 0.05, but told him not to make the same mistake again.

“You need to understand that when you drink alcohol your reading goes up very quickly, but it comes down very slowly,” he said.

Woman’s suspension extended after mix-up over dates

Kylie Bell has been forced to cough up her licence after getting her suspension dates mixed up.

Her lawyer told Penrith Local Court last Thursday Bell had mistaken the start and finish date of her driving ban, “She made an honest mistake,” she submitted.

But Magistrate Stephen Corry said it wasn’t a good enough excuse.

“You should have read the letter which sets out the respective dates,” he told Bell.

She was convicted, fined $100 and barred from driving for three more months.

Cranebrook: Police draw weapons before searching car

Police are investigating a group of four males who are allegedly part of an outlaw motorcycle gang.

On Monday, October 29 at 11pm the men were driving down Dulhunty Crescent in Cranebrook in their black Chrysler sedan which is known by police.

Police had to draw their guns when approaching the vehicle.

Upon obtaining a search warrant, the vehicle was inspected and a revolver as well as a large sum of cash was discovered.

Police then conducted a line search of the surrounding area to ensure no other illegal substances were discarded of.

The offenders ranged from 26 to 29-years-old, two of which are local from St Clair and Ropes Crossing.

As a result, the four male persons are currently detained.

More fake $50 notes found across the Penrith region

After three quiet weeks, fake $50 notes are back with a number of counterfeit notes being reported to police within the last week.

On Friday, October 26 a number of counterfeit currencies were found in two convenience stores on Mulgoa Road.

The serial numbers are GB09418670 and GB09418770.

More counterfeit currencies were reported at a fast food restaurant in Emu Plains and by a taxi driver who had been working in the Penrith area.

Police urge the public to hand in any counterfeit notes they come across to their closest police station.

St Clair: Assault and robbery takes a strange twist

Police are calling for witnesses following an assault and robbery that occurred on Sunday, October 28.

An 18-year-old male was walking home from a party at about 2am when another

male approached him on the corner of Denver Road and Bennett Road in St Clair. The victim was brutally attacked and punched multiple times.

The offender then stole the victim’s wallet and phone.

In a strange turn of events, the offender returned the stolen phone and wallet and then proceeded to steal the victim’s packet of cigarettes.

It is unknown as to whether the victim knew the offender.

Werrington: Woman busted driving while intoxicated

A woman has been charged after police allegedly discovered her driving whilst highly intoxicated.

The 37-year-old was driving a red Ford Fiesta on the Great Western Highway at Werrington when she stopped at a red light.

Police who were patrolling the area received reports of a woman driving erratically and after spotting her, she was pulled over.

She was subject to a stationary roadside breath test where she returned a positive result.

Werrington: Police discover woman never had a licence

On Friday, October 26 at 8pm a woman was driving on Victoria Street in Werrington when she was stopped by police for speeding.

Police asked to view the 49-year-old Werrington Downs resident’s licence and were shocked to find that she had never been issued one.

Police searched the vehicle to discover a small bag containing white powder.

She will appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, November 20.

Time to bust congestion New rail bridge will form part of $105 million upgrade to busy local road onstruction on the Mulgoa Road / Castlereagh Road upgrade, between Union Road and Museum Drive in Penrith, is set to kick off within weeks, with the major work contract awarded to McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd last week.

Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population, Alan Tudge, said the $105 million upgrade would provide better road connections to the Penrith CBD and bust congestion at the intersections of Jane Street and High Street.

“The Morrison Government is delivering essential transport infrastructure for western Sydney to support the expected future growth of the region,” he said.

“This project will improve access to public transport in the busy CBD and get people home sooner and safer.”

NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey said the project would also allow for future upgrades of sections of Mulgoa Road and provide safe and effective pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

“These busy intersections are vital to connect road users with the Penrith CBD, Blue Mountains and surrounding suburbs,” Ms Pavey said.

“The upgrade will also improve the intersections of Mulgoa Road and High Street as well as Castlereagh Road and Jane Street to provide increased capacity and improved bus priority at the High Street intersection, cutting commute times.”

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne said the upgrade also included a new rail bridge.

“As Penrith locals know, the section of Castlereagh Road under the rail bridge often floods when there is rainfall, and this upgrade will help address this issue by delivering improved flood immunity, which will be complemented by a new, longer rail bridge,” she said.

Construction is expected to start in late 2018 and be completed by late 2020, weather permitting.

In other news, Penrith City Council says it’s trying to find a way to save large trees in front of the Grey Gums Hotel, which could be removed as part of Mulgoa Road upgrades.

“It is about striking the right balance through careful planning and design so as to retain these significant tree plantings,” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said.

M4 travel takes its toll Protestors say they want M4 toll removed as their wallets run on empty NICOLA BARTON

rivers say their wallets are running on empty as they fork out big money to travel on the M4 after the re-introduction of tolls on the motorway last year.

Over 100 residents flocked to Triangle Park last Friday to call on the Minister for WestConnex and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres to remove the existing toll and promise there won’t be more in the future.

Over the past six weeks the Penrith Valley Community Unions (PVCU) templated 6000 letters addressed to Mr Ayres, allowing the community to add their details.

“People were knocking us over to get in and sign it, it’s a hot issue and obviously you don’t get 6000 letters if the issue isn’t deeply widely felt and the community isn’t outraged,” PVCU spokesperson, Peter Mason said.

The PVCU fear more tolls may be implemented in the future, noting areas of concern such as The Northern Road, Russell Street and Church Street exits.

Labor candidate for Penrith, Karen McKeown, said the State Government is not listening to frustrated motorists.

“The M4 toll is a tax on the people of

The western Sydney workforce currently spends about $5 billion a year getting to and from work in their cars.

Mr Ayres said there are underlying issues that need to be addressed.

“Perhaps Penrith Valley Unions can tell everyone what Labor will charge as a toll to drive in the M4 tunnel? You can’t trust Labor not to change their policy just like Bob Carr did in 1995 on this same issue,” he said.

“Labor is cutting $630 million from Nepean Hospital, I’m disappointed Penrith Valley Unions have been silent on this fact.”

Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive, Graham Millett, said the Visitor Centre will use digital and augmented reality technologies to give the public an immersive experience.

“We want the public to be a part of the journey and discover the airport’s story, particularly the benefits it will bring to the region in terms of jobs and opportunities,” he said.

“Floor-to-ceiling glass panels will offer a first-class view of the airport construction area.

“Augmented reality will allow visitors to see exactly where the runway and

terminals will be built and what they will look like from the vantage point of the Visitor Centre.”

Community and school groups as well as local and international visitors and members of the public will enjoy free access.

“It’s exciting to think that some of the students who experience the Visitor Centre on school excursions will one day be in a job created by the airport,” Mr Millett said.

“Western Sydney Airport will support tens of thousands of jobs in the region, including high-value jobs in sectors such as aviation, defence and medicine.

“We’re doing much more than building an airport, we’re the catalyst for new opportunities in western Sydney, and the Visitor Centre means the community can be a part of it from the start.”

Western Sydney Airport’s local jobs targets mean that at least 30 per cent of jobs generated in construction will go to western Sydney locals, increasing to at least 50 per cent when the airport is fully operational.

Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the visitor centre will be at the heart of the airport throughout construction, offering community members the chance to watch the terminal and runway take shape.

“It will be a cutting edge design, and be built on site to give the community and visitors a real insight as the airport takes shape,” he said.

The contract to design and build the facility in time to open for the community in mid-2019, was awarded to Australian construction firm Watpac.

Glenmore Park High School student Shelby-Lea Grech is proving you’re never too young to make a change in the world.

Later this month, the 16-year-old is hosting her own fundraising gala ball to help girls from Sierra Leone and Uganda to receive an education.

In support of not-for-profit organisation One Girl, Ms Grech has gone on to become an ambassador for the foundation.

“My education means a lot to me and it has opened up a lot of opportunities so far, it’s so important and these girls are denied the access to that,” Ms Grech said.

“In Australia we are very privileged to have a right to an education and all of this stuff we take for granted, it’s really a luxury so the more people that spread awareness, the better it is for them to live the best life that they can.”

The gala ball will feature speakers, music performances, raffles, auctions and a light supper.

With the hopes to raise $3000, Ms Grech said the money is enough to educate 10 girls for a year.

“Not being allowed to have an education just because you’re a girl is just ridiculous.

If I have the ability to make a change and give them opportunities rather than getting married as a child, then that’s what I will do,” she said.

As part of her efforts, she also organised two ‘Do It In A Dress’ initiatives which saw men and women wearing school dresses at her local gym and high school.

The One Girl Education Gala event is at Glenmore Park High School on Wednesday, November 7 at 6pm. Entry on the night is $25, with all proceeds to be donated to One Girl.

he next time you order food from Uber Eats or Deliveroo, it may come from a restaurant that doesn’t even exist.

‘Virtual restaurants’ are the big new trend in the food industry, where existing restaurants double up as other offerings to maximise their potential on online platforms.

Penrith’s JP McCaffreys Traditional Fish & Chips also doubles as The Chicken Schnitzel Shop and The Gourmet Burger Bar on Uber Eats, with revenue from one of the virtual businesses outdoing their bricks and mortar store.

Owner Mary McCaffrey said it’s opening up a whole new world for business owners.

“I’ve been in business for over 10 years and I’ve seen how since Uber Eats came on board, there’s been a massive change in the way people are ordering and eating food,” she said.

“It sort of struck me, I can run as many restaurants as I want from these premises, maximise the space and call them all something different.”

Ms McCaffrey said both the restaurant and the consumer wins, as both profit and variety increases.

“My rent doesn’t go up anymore, but I have two more restaurants – everyone’s a winner really,” Ms McCaffrey said.

“It’s like when VCR video tapes came out, everyone thought it was the end of cinema, it wasn’t, it was just a whole new culture and way of doing things and that’s what’s happening to the food industry.”

Virtual restaurants are online-only kitchens that allow business owners and chefs to explore new culinary options and reach a wider audience by using the space in their existing kitchen.

Uber Eats Regional General Manager, Jodie Auster, said most people have no idea these restaurants don’t physically exist.

“We’ve seen a huge growth in the number of virtual restaurants on the Uber Eats platform with over 500 operating in Australia,” she said.

“There’s no additional fixed costs, so our restaurant partners can focus on more important things like growing their revenue and reaching new customers.”

Mountain View Reserve at Cranebrook has been recognised twice for environmental excellence by winning the Integrated Stormwater Design category at the 2018 Stormwater NSW Awards and then taking out the Coastal and Waterways Protection category at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2018 Sustainable Cities Awards.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the dual awards for the project showed Penrith Council’s commitment to the environment and sound sustainability practices.

“It is wonderful that the Mountain View project has won these awards, however that is not the sole aim when we embark on these projects,” he said.

“The initial focus of this project was on stormwater treatment because the site is immediately upstream of the Penrith Lakes system, as well as to improve the condition of a regionally significant natural wetland.

“As a result of the works over the last four years this project has significantly improved the quality of water flowing into Penrith Lakes and ultimately the Nepean River, and restored the natural wetland through revegetation.”

The project has resulted in complementary works at the reserve including restoration of the adjacent Cumberland Plain Woodland as well as walking paths, a viewing platform, a bird hide and informative signs and sculptures.

Stormwater runoff from the surrounding urban area is treated through a swale, a raingarden and a constructed wetland, and the natural wetland on site is now more resilient and home to many more birds, reptiles and frogs. Sugar gliders have also been found in the bushland.

“The presence of these animals demonstrates the great work that has been undertaken across the whole reserve to help restore its natural areas in what is a great outcome for our City,” Cr Fowler said.

Chance to tell their story Glenmore Park author’s new book reveals little-known part of military history NICOLA BARTON

ince a young age, Glenmore Park resident Adam Lunney has been fascinated by Australia’s military history.

Now, the 40-year-old historian has just published his first book which documents Australia’s participation in the Normandy Landings during World War II. When taking the trip of a lifetime to Normandy back in 2014, things took an unexpected turn when he signed up for what he thought was a battlefield tour, but was in fact a French hiking group.

“I went along with it, did the hike, and when we got to the gun battery there was a memorial that mentioned Australians, so I asked the group if I could give a small talk because it’s unusual for Australians to be known for their part in this,” Mr Lunney told the Weekender.

The group were blown away as they had never heard of Australia’s involvement and immediately asked if they could have a minute of silence for the soldiers.

“I was blown away by their response, it was very emotional, so that’s when I thought to myself there’s something in this and there’s stories here that people don’t necessarily know about,” he said.

Upon his return to Australia, Mr Lunney began researching high and low on the Internet and at the National Archives. He then joined the Spitfire Association in an attempt to track down members of the squadron “I was able to reach out to families and seek people who had relatives who were in the squadron, I’ve been able to tell them a lot more about their father or grandfather than they actually knew,” Mr Lunney said.

After three years of extensive research, Mr Lunney has now published his book.

Many of the photos used within are from the families he met along the way.

The book, titled Ready to Strike: The Spitfires and Australians of 453 (RAAF) Squadron over Normandy, was Highly Commended in the 2018 RAAF Heritage Awards.

“You’ll notice the title is not ‘forgotten heroes’ or ‘untold stories’, I’m not into that ‘don’t forget me’ business, but at the end of the day we were there and these are their stories,” Mr Lunney said.

Tomorrow, on Saturday, November 3, Mr Lunney has been invited to attend a screening of a spitfire documentary in Canberra, where he will launch his new book.

From pain and tragedy to triumph and joy, new series showcases incredible lives NICOLA BARTON

enrith resident Anna Boros knows that art says what words can’t.

That’s why she’s spent the past year creating a portrait series that expresses the adversities of everyday women in the community, in a way that acknowledges and celebrates their stories.

In the quest to create a series about her own life, struggling with the loss of a child and battling with six autoimmune diseases, she was concerned that it was becoming ‘too vain’ and losing its original intent.

By starting conversations at bus stops and on trains, she soon learned that there are many women with similar or other traumatic narratives that she thought deserved to be recognised.

“Women should be praised every day, I was sick of reading magazines saying ‘this celebrity has gone through this’. It’s not just celebrities, it’s the woman you see on the bus, or the stranger walking a dog, these women go through so many experiences and they deserve to be showcased and recognised,” Ms Boros told the Weekender.

“None of these women had a means where they could pour it out, they often

say ‘I’ve never told anyone this’ or ‘people don’t understand’, and all through it you just hear the loneliness in their voice.”

The series features 18 portraits of women, 16 of which are from the Penrith region.

Titled ‘Everyday Matriarchal Heroines’, the glassed, pastel canvas drawings represent women who have overcome great struggle.

From cancer and death, to abuse and bullying, each individual has a story to tell.

“I spend a lot of money on these beautiful and elaborate frames but that’s how beautiful and elaborate these women are, and they represent something that appears so ugly but the lessons involved are truly a gift,” Ms Boros said.

“These women needed to be uplifted and noticed and through all of it you’ll find that they are all just absolutely normal.”

Ms Boros has been a practicing artist for over 20 years, exploring minimalism, abstract, cartooning and traditional style through the means of painting, drawing and sculpting.

Her works will be on display at the Tap Gallery in Surry Hills from Tuesday, November 20 until Sunday, November 25.

We’re flood-ready Penrith residents will be hearing more about flooding issues from Council as well as the State Government over coming months, as a range of separate but complementary studies and plans are being worked on.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the river is one of the reasons our City is so attractive for residents, investors and visitors.

“It is central to the lifestyle, environment and recreational opportunities we love, but like all waterway cities around the world we need to be prepared for the fact that flood events will happen,” Cr Fowler said.

“We cannot flood proof our cities, but we can take steps to reduce the risk and impact to infrastructure, homes, businesses and residents.”

Fish funds Do you have a great idea for improving fishing in Penrith?

Now is the time to apply for a grant from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres is encouraging fishing and community groups to apply for grants to improve recreational fishing in Penrith.

“The grants are open to anyone, including fishing clubs and organisations, universities, councils, community groups, and individuals,” he said.

Funding is provided for a range of projects including education.

Applications close on November 30.

Help feed pets in need Charity drive will keep dogs and cats healthy NICOLA BARTON

etbarn Penrith on Coreen Avenue have teamed up with Wellness Natural Pet Food for their new ‘Dinner’s on Us’ campaign, which will fill the bellies of animals in need when locals buy a meal for their own four-legged friend.

From now until the end of the month, when customers purchase one bag of Wellness pet food, they will donate a day’s worth of cat or dog food to nominated animal shelters across Australia.

Petbarn Penrith Coreen Avenue Store Manager, Emily Murphy, said she feels privileged to be a part of such a good cause.

“We are very excited to be taking part in this positive initiative and are encouraging the Penrith community to choose Wellness to feed their furry family member to help support the shelters who care for animals who don’t have a home of their own yet,” she said.

“By giving the gift of Wellness, the Penrith community will be making a valued contribution towards providing food for the pets who need it most, with aims to reach a total of 38,000 meals.”

With increasing numbers of animals present in pet shelters, the need for donations is more crucial than ever.

Pets in need will be helped by a month-long community initiative Chief Veterinarian at Greencross Vets, Dr Rachel Chay, said this initiative will benefit hundreds of animals across Australia who are currently waiting for their forever homes.

“While many animals in shelters are lucky enough to find their forever homes, new animals are continually filling those

empty cages, donations made possible by this initiative will help keep those pets happy and healthy by giving them the natural, balanced nutrition they need to support their overall wellbeing,” she said.

Through the donation scheme, Penrith residents will be helping feline shelter, Mini Kitty Commune.

ecently some networking colleagues and I ran an event, using our mutual resources without an event manager (recommended for larger events and when budget allows).

Here are some tips to running events on a budget...

What is your ultimate goal in running the event? Is it to attract new clients, thank loyal supporters or to give back to the community, possibly as a fundraiser (the latter is regulated)? Understanding your purpose, makes it easier to make decisions about running the event including setting your budget.

Your budget. How much will you spend on this event and how much will you collect? What happens if the money coming in doesn’t cover the money going out?

The most expensive costs in running an event, are typically the venue and catering (if any). Other costs include name badges, printing agendas, handouts and banners, and promo items.

In advance there is also marketing.

Marketing may need to be done face to face and via online channels, depending

on who your audience is, and how many people you’re trying to attract.

Our event attracted less people than originally intended, but we covered our catering costs through sponsors.

The lower numbers meant participants formed stronger connections, which was a goal of the event. The five organisers supplied our time free of charge to organise and speak at the event, and contributed to the marketing effort.

Our sponsors were promoted and they received things like entry, and shout outs at the event and on social media.

Setting the attendance price of your event can be tricky. Too high will put people off, and too low won’t cover costs. Free events have a 30 to 70 per cent non-attendance rate. If people pay even a small fee, they’re more likely to turn up.

Before running a larger event, start small with a low cost event with no or minimal catering. Alternatively gain an audience first by tagging onto another event as a speaker, or by combining resources with others, being clear who is doing what.

Open’s proud history is littered with names of golfing legends he New South Wales Open Golf Championship has a rich history that dates back to 1931, pre-dating the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.

First held at Manly Golf Club, the tournament was initially played back then as a ‘close’ format championship, meaning it was open only to residents of New South Wales.

sporting heroes. As the decade wore on, it quickly evolved into the tournament that ‘they all wanted to play’, soon becoming one of the big three tournaments in our young nation sitting alongside the Australian Open and the Australian PGA Championship.

In 1958 the tournament finally became truly a ‘Open’ event, attracting the cream of Australia’s golfing elite along with appearances by some of the best players in the world.

The NSW Open Championship boasts an honour role that includes many of Australia’s finest golfers including World Golf Hall of Fame inductees Kel Nagle, Greg Norman, and Peter Thomson; Legends like Norman Von Nida, Eric Cremin and Frank Phillips, and amateurs including five-time champion Jim Ferrier, Owen Beldham and Tony Gresham.

Other names to lift the trophy include Ian Baker-Finch, Ted Ball, Billy Dunk, Peter Lonard, Jack Newton, Peter O’Malley, Craig Parry, Bob Shearer, Ian Stanley, Aaron Townsend, Ben Eccles, Adam Blyth and Jason Scrivener, the defending champion.

Big names line up for NSW Open Championship ome of the biggest names in Australian golf will be lining up for a shot at lifting the Kel Nagle Cup when the NSW Open starts next Thursday at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

The current leader of the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia money list, Daniel Nisbet will continue his quest for the Order of Merit title, which carries with it entry into the final stage of the European Tour School and Web.com tour

Chasing Nisbet for the Order of Merit title is fellow Queenslander, Anthony Quayle.

The 24-year-old qualified for the Japanese Tour this year, and was runnerup to the Indian Gaganjeet Bhullar at the Fiji International back in early August.

2018 Oates Victorian Open Champion Simon Hawkes has also entered.

Besides his Victorian Open triumph this year, the Tasmanian has also recorded top 10 finishes in both the New Zealand and Western Australian PGA Championships.

Newcastle’s James Nitties, who is currently third on the Order of Merit will be looking to win his home State Open for the very first time.

The 36-year-old came within a whisker of a life-changing win earlier this year at the ISPS World Super 6 in Perth, only to

lose to Thai superstar Kiradech Apibanrat in the final.

Fellow Newcastle product Callan O’Reilly will also be looking to add a NSW Open title to his resume. The 28-year-old turned professional in 2014 after a stellar amateur career.

O’Reilly is currently seventh on the Order of Merit.

Former NSW and Australian Amateur representative Harrison Endycott, currently ninth on the Order of Merit, will return to Twin Creeks after an impressive rookie year on the PGA Latinoamerica tour.

Endycott made his professional debut at last year’s Open.

Another rookie who his already building an impressive resume overseas is New Zealand’s Nick Voke.

The 24-year-old, who graduated from the University of Iowa just last year, has already recorded three wins on the PGA Tour of China this year to secure full playing rights on the Web.com tour for 2019.

Other names of note include the evergreen Matt Millar from Canberra, Victorian David McKenzie, who impressed many this year on the US Champions Tour, and a host of other Tournament winners including Travis Smyth, Aaron Pike, Daniel Fox, and Michael Sim. Nisbet looking forward to tackling Twin Creeks aniel Nisbet is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to take out the ISPS Handa Australasian PGA Tour’s Order of Merit for 2018.

The Queenslander is acutely aware of what winning the title will mean and where it could take him next year and beyond.

“It’s the world’s worst secret that I am trying to win it,” Nisbet said.

“There are a lot of benefits that come with winning the title.

“It will open up a lot of opportunities for me next year and beyond on the Asian and European Tour.”

Currently leading the 2018 earnings race with around $218,000 in the bank courtesy of his wins in the New Zealand Open and Northern Territory PGA, Nisbet made the conscious decision to relinquish starts on the Asian Tour over the last few months to concentrate his efforts on the Aussie money list title.

“Darwin (NT PGA) was probably the first tournament where I forewent an Asian Tour start, and it worked out well,” he smiled.

Contending for this year’s money list title is a far cry from where the 28-year-

old found himself last year on the eve of the NSW Open.

Battling to retain his card, Nisbet had even gone as far as pencilling into his diary the dates for the tour’s qualifying school at the end of the year.

“It’s where it kicked off for me,” Nisbet said.

“I struck a bit of form when I got to the NSW Open last year. I carried that through the rest of the summer, and into this year.”

Nisbet returns to Twin Creeks ready to continue his impressive run of form.

He likes the course and is determined to do well. The key to a good result for the week, he said, is based on solid preparation and the strength of the team around him.

“The course suits my eye. There’s a couple of short holes out there that I can take advantage of, a couple of holes that require accurate long irons from the tee,” he said.

“I am determined to make the most of what this year can offer. The preparation we do each week leads to me playing at my best. Good golf settles everything; there’s no decision better than good golf.”

Blyth hopes to rekindle memories of 2016 victory dam Blyth is set to make it a defence of sorts of his 2016 NSW Open Championship when the tournament gets underway at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club next week.

The 37-year-old is back after being unable to defend his crown last year due to a date clash with the final stage of the European Tour School.

Blyth said he was fraught with the need to pass on defending, but with the riches of the world’s second largest tour beckoning, it was an opportunity too good to pass up.

“It was a tough decision,” Blyth said.

“Winning it gave me the opportunity of playing the final stage of the European Tour School.

“Defending a Championship is truly an honour to have, but the win also gave me the chance of playing in Europe. I went over, gave it a go, but just missed.”

The Queenslander described the win, the biggest of his career to date, as almost the perfect week of golf. His fiancé Nicole (now his wife) caddied for the first two rounds, before his father Stephen arrived from Queensland to be by his side for the final two rounds.

“I got the putter going at Stonecutters. I holed everything that week,” he said.

“Nicole caddied the first two days and then Dad did the weekend. It was kind of unique in a sense.

“People couldn’t believe I changed with the form I was in, but it was always the plan, Nic doesn’t really like carrying the big bag, and Dad has always been there.”

Fast forward two years, and a refreshed Blyth is ready to get his 2018 Australian Summer of Golf campaign into gear.

He has spent most of the off-season plying his trade on the Asian Tour, describing his year as up and down.

He said the NSW Open at Twin Creeks is the ideal place to start.

“I played solidly in India last week finishing 57th,” Blyth said.

“I didn’t do anything brilliant, but played OK.” Blyth said he is feeling comfortable heading into the tournament, and hopes to rekindle his 2016 form.

“My swing feels really good, but it’s more about getting putts into the hole,” Blyth said.

“Hopefully, I can rekindle the memories from a couple of years ago.”

Building a music Empire F

or over a decade, The Cat Empire have been known far and wide as one of the world’s greatest party bands.

Sweeping up festival-goers in their highly energetic, spectacular live shows, the band’s colourful, genrebending music, shipped across the globe in travellers’ backpacks, seems at home almost anywhere.

But front man Felix Riebl said it was all a bit of a mystery as to how the six-man band came to find their sound.

“I’m not even sure why The Cat Empire

is like it is or how we even came up with this sound or anything, it’s kind of a mystery to all of us to a degree,” he said.

“And for whatever reason it hasn’t been a studio, it hasn’t been the media or publicity that has made us who we are, it’s been that chemistry that has somehow translated to people in a festival environment.

“Sometimes in life you find yourself in a situation that you can’t explain and in our case we just followed it, we were all enjoying ourselves and now we are 16 years on and still together and have a chance to do it.”

taste of their upcoming album, releasing one single each month before its full release in 2019.

“I think it’s a really, really exciting and dynamic album,” Riebl said.

“I really feel like we have an intention with this one to say this is an international band now.

Difficult to describe and impossible to categorise, The Cat Empire’s reputation is one that has been built on their ability to produce chaotic and uplifting live shows.

Headlining this year’s Inland Sea of Sound Festival, Riebl said the best thing

about playing festivals was experiencing a collective passion.

“It’s the roar of the crowd and it’s like playing to an audience that hasn’t all seen you beforehand, that is what’s great about playing festivals,” he said.

“To know that at the beginning of the set, mainly half of the audience haven’t heard you before and then by the end of the set you’ve won over a lot of fans or you’ve engaged people is a really great feeling.”

Ê Well-known television presenter and gardening guru Jamie Durie is joining Channel Seven’s ‘House Rules’ as a judge in 2019. Durie will replace architect Drew Heath on the hit renovation series. Durie is no stranger to renovation and lifestyle shows having previously appeared on ‘Backyard Blitz’, ‘The Block’, ‘The Outdoor Room’ and ‘The Living Room’ over the years.

This year’s debut series was filmed in Mallorca, Spain, but it isn’t quite known where next year’s series will land. I’d prefer they continue the exotic vibe and keep it somewhere in Europe but there’s been suggestions a Pacific location could be on the cards. Ê One for all the stay at home mums (and possibly dads) out there, ‘Dr Phil’ will be remaining on the air until at least 2023. Dr Phil McGraw’s contract was due to expire in 2020 but CBS has extended his deal a further three years. ‘Dr Phil’ airs on Channel Ten.

The next series, which will be LeBlanc’s last as lead host, will debut early in 2019 with Flintoff, McGuinness and Harris to premiere series 27 later in the year.

by Aussie film-maker Heath Davis, ‘Book Week’ is an all too relatable film about letting go of old dreams and behaviours, and finding solace in new ones.

Based on Davis’ own real life experiences as a failed Hollywood film-maker turned school teacher, the movie follows defeatist lead character Nick Cutler (Alan Dukes), a novelist turned high school teacher, as he messily navigates his way through seven ill-fated days in an attempt to secure a book deal, his last shot at success.

Filmed in the Blue Mountains, and

co-starring Susan Prior as Cutler’s lead teacher, and part-time lover, the movie features a selection of incredible Australian actors, and familiar local surroundings.

The movie’s plot is rife with selfsabotage, and emotional distress, and does a tremendous job of hitting the core of the viewer in the most desperate, depressing scenes, as well as in the hilarious, light-hearted ones.

At times an uneasy watch, and at times a joyful one, ‘Book Week’ tackles the age old reality of coming to grips with dying dreams, and does so in a way that feels fresh, and innovative.

What happens if your business partner dies?

The death of a business partner can set in motion a chain reaction of uncertain events...

Most of us are aware that there will be financial consequences if we lose our husband or wife and understand that this event is likely to create some financial stress. Many people have some sort of strategy to mitigate the financial risk, whether it is through life insurance or building sufficient assets to fund our lifestyle.

The financial consequence of losing a business partner can be just as dire and far more complicated. Unfortunately, most people who have business partners don’t address this risk at all.

The first issue that needs to be considered is what happens to the business in the event of a partner dying? Do you want the spouse (or beneficiary) to become an owner? Do you want the surviving parties to buy out the estate? How do you determine the value? How do you fund it?

It is best to discuss and document all of these things in advance in a partnership agreement (depending on your business structure, it may also be referred to as a shareholder or unit holder’s agreement).

Most people think of these documents mainly as a means to resolve disputes,

however, this is only a fraction of the benefit a partnership agreement covers.

They also cover how to bring in new partners, plans to exit the business and, in the area I’d like to address here, succession planning in the event of the death of a partner.

Depending on the type and size of the business, it can be quite common for a large portion of an individual’s wealth to be in their business, this is certainly the case for me. Obviously, most people would like that value to go to their own family, not their business partner.

This creates a problem for the surviving business partner, not only have they lost the attributes that their partner contributed to the business, they now have to find a way to buy out the estate of the deceased partner or come to some other arrangement. Again, if this isn’t discussed beforehand, after the event, establishing the value of the business or the terms of the agreement are now adversarial in nature.

Funding the purchase in many cases will be difficult.

Unless the surviving partner has the funds available, they will need to make other arrangements such as obtaining a loan. This may place cashflow pressures on the business.

One very effective strategy to deal with this in advance is to use a buy/sell contract outlining the terms of the sale.

It is also advisable to obtain an insurance policy on all business owners to fund the purchase. This results in the surviving partners being able to continue to own the business, and the estate of the deceased is able to receive their share of the value of the business.

If you’re in business with other people, I’d highly recommend going through the process of developing a partnership agreement and addressing what happens if one of the partners dies.

A woman’s body changes significantly during pregnancy, and there’s a few alterations that may surprise you!

In last week’s article, I discussed how pregnancy can affect your skin and nails. Today we will look at the biomechanical and musculoskeletal issues which can arise during and after the baby arrives.

Ligament laxity: As hormone levels change, ligament laxity can occur. This means that our ligaments become more mobile to allow changes within joints.

This is ideal when we consider changes to the pelvis, however, when it comes to the feet and lower limb, laxity in the joints of the foot and ankle can result in instability.

Changes in gait: As you gain weight during the pregnancy, and in addition to the joint laxity in your feet, maintaining your balance can become tricky. This is why during the late stages of pregnancy, women will walk with a large curvature of the back, and with a broader based gait to maintain balance. Additionally, the drastic changes in weight and shift of centre of gravity leads to altered loads through our muscles and joints, which can present as symptomatic pain. We

often see postpartum mothers experience symptoms such as heel pain, forefoot pain and knee pain due to these changes.

Changes in foot size: During pregnancy, women may note that the size of the feet will increase. This is due to an accumulation of fluid and tissue within the lower extremities. As mentioned previously hormonal changes also occur that lead to laxity or looseness of the ligaments within the foot. This loosening results in increase in foot length and width with a decrease in arch height, meaning the arch becomes flatter. While these changes tend to reverse themselves in the post-partum period, some women may notice a permanent change in the shape of the foot or notice they go up a shoe size.

Calf swelling, cramping and pain: Calf swelling and cramping are frequent during pregnancy. Blood flow returning from your legs back to your heart is slowed due to the increased size of the uterus and foetus. This leads to a build-up of fluid within the legs.

Wearing compression stockings can help reduce swelling. Regular walking and low-impact aerobic exercise during pregnancy will also reduce swelling.

Staying properly hydrated and frequent stretching of the calves can help to reduce symptoms and massaging the area can also provide relief.

If you pick your destination and time of year you’re travelling in and have a good quality bike with plenty of storage, motorcycle riding is one of the greatest, most liberating travel experiences you can have.

You see, smell and taste so much more than you do sitting in an air-conditioned car and, if it’s hot, you certainly enjoy that break at the end of the day.

I recently returned from a 10-day bike ride with a friend travelling almost 2000km from Alice Springs to Darwin and was able to fit everything I needed into the two side panniers of my Indian Chieftain and the rest in a backpack.

My friend Nigel was on an Indian Roadmaster which also had a couple of lockable panniers as well as a pannier behind the pillion passenger seat.

We were filming a new series for ‘Nigel’s Ingenious Oz Project’ – interviewing small business people and community leaders on the “ingenious” things they were doing.

This meant that as well as our clothes

and toiletries we also had a fair amount of camera equipment.

On top of Nigel’s Indian Roadmaster back pannier was a small chrome roof rack which allowed us to strap on the camera tripod.

In early October it was warm but comfortable. For the most part we stuck to the speed limit – 130km/h on the open road – and never travelled before dawn or after dusk which is when the majority of the desert creatures are most active.

Only once did I get a scare when I flew past a cow that was grazing on the side of the road.

We wore open face helmets which provide plenty more air flow than full faced ones, and gloves became a must after three days. Any longer and our hands would’ve been burnt to a crisp despite applying plenty of sunscreen at regular intervals.

Any motorcyclist will tell you that good quality sunglasses are also imperative, as is taking a break every couple of hours.

The scenery can start to play tricks on you after any longer.

Thankfully, there is so much to see and do, and roadhouses and pubs at regular intervals which means you don’t have to think about packing any extra fuel.

The Roadmaster and Chieftain have a range of about 250km, which is more than enough to allow you to see the sights, stop for a break and refuel. And, with the inbuilt GPS, you can simply key in the next town or tourism site on your

trip and be satisfied that you won’t be getting stuck anywhere.

Another great feature of the bikes we had was that you can sync your phone to the bike, meaning you can play your music along the way. With the wide open spaces nobody seems to mind how loud you play it either.

Stops for us included Ti Tree, Barrow Creek, Tennant Creek, the selfproclaimed UFO capital of the world Wycliffe Well, the quintessential Aussie outback pub of Daly Waters (pictured below), Katherine, and finally the amazing Darwin.

We couldn’t resist stopping off at the Devil’s Marbles (pictured above), Katherine Gorge, Litchfield National Park and the Humpty Doo Hotel, where Slim Dusty was reportedly inspired to write Humpty Doo Waltz.

It was an incredible trip, with the people we met as interesting as the landscape we passed over. So what are you waiting for?

Early warning about the dangers ahead this summer

Shocking incident in Penrith reminds us all about water safety...

Last Saturday was gorgeous weather, warm enough for my children to swim for the first time this spring, and we had a great afternoon splashing about.

It was the first time my four-year-old son had swum in our backyard pool without a flotation aid, as over the winter his swimming skills really progressed to the point where I felt comfortable that he no longer needed it, and to “bubble him up” would actually cause his skills to regress.

Supervision was absolutely key.

Coming indoors and reading the alerts on my phone a short time later when we had finished swimming, I felt sick. It had been reported that a four-year-old boy was in a critical condition at the Children’s Hospital Westmead after he was pulled from a pool in Penrith earlier that same afternoon.

It is impossible as a parent not to put yourself in that child’s parents’ shoes, and my heart went out to the child and their family, without any judgement, just compassion. Accidents happen, and the family involved will never be the same. It is simply heartbreaking.

over the last 25 years. Accidental falls into water were recorded as the leading activity resulting in drowning, with a lapse in adult supervision cited as the major risk factor in 100 per cent of toddler drowning deaths. Swimming pools were the leading location for drowning deaths among young children in Australia, accounting for 52 per cent (2002/03 – 2017/18).

“It can only take a few moments for a child to slip away unnoticed, fall into the water and drown,” said Justin Scarr, CEO at Royal Life Saving Society – Australia.

“Drowning is often quick and silent.

Distractions like browsing social media on your phone, attending to another child, or ducking inside to grab something can have tragic consequences if a toddler is left unattended by water.

“Active supervision is the best protection against child drowning, however kids can be quick and hard to keep up with so it’s vital to fence pools and spas to prevent children gaining access.

“Regularly check that your fence and gate are in working order, and never prop the gate open.

“The shocking research report has also revealed that for every fatal drowning there were an estimated 7.6 non-fatal drowning incidents resulting in hospitalisation. That is approximately 7,361 children who suffered a non-fatal drowning over the last 25 years, many live with a permanent disability as a result.”

It is also incredibly important that young children learn to swim, and are educated about water safety and CPR. In a good news story this week, four young boys aged between 11 and 13 saved a four-year-old boy from drowning at a Central Coast caravan park by recognising he was in trouble under the water, pulling him out and performing CPR until the ambulance arrived.

The boys credit their knowledge of what to do in that situation to the TV show ‘Bondi Rescue’ and a Year 4 CPR lesson at their school.

Remove hair/exfoliate The day before make sure you shave your legs and use a body scrub all over. The short answer is yes, you should seal your pavers.

When people are looking at paving an area, there are many circumstances where using sealant will help protect their investment.

The benefits far out weigh the cost of the sealant and the time spent sealing pavers.

Sealants are not however fool proof and attention to application should always be priority By using sealant, you are creating a barrier between the paver and problems such as moulds, moss’s and staining. What the sealant does is make cleaning a lot quicker and easier when these issues occur.

There are a range of sealers available, for every budget, to suit different surfaces and different applications, so it is easy to find a product that best suits your investment.

WATER BASED OR OIL BASED ENAMELS When painting your skirtings, archives, trims and doors a lot of people are unsure whether to use the traditional oil based enamels or newer to the market water based enamels.

Although hard wearing oil based enamels will most definitely yellow over time. Yellowing can be caused by heat from household items like stoves and heaters, or a lack of light to the area like inside cupboards or skirtings behind furniture.

Water based enamels although not as hard wearing have far superior colour retention with no noticeable yellowing over time and are available in different sheen levels.

It is important to remember if your timber work or doors have a lot of imperfections then a low gloss would be best to hide these. Semi gloss is perfect for doors, frames and cupboards whilst full gloss gives a highly reflective glossy, clean and durable finish it does not hide imperfections well.

WHEN TO REMOVE WHEN TO PRUNE The natural impulse of property owners after storms or windy conditions is to remove trees. These quick rash decisions often result in taking down trees that could have been preserved.

Trees provide aesthetic value to properties and general maintence and care is often all that is required to ensure they are retained as part of local landscapes and the natural environment.

Target pruning and weight reduction may be all that is necessary to reduce the potential hazard of a tree falling over or having branch failure. Be mindful of ‘topping’ or removing the crown of significant established trees as this is not an appropriate pruning method and can have long lasting detrimental affects to trees.

It is advisable to employee an arborist to assess and guide property owners on how best to approach tree pruning or removal to ensure costly, unecessary work is not being carried out.

he Penrith Basketball Association has announced its coaching line-up for next year’s Basketball NSW Waratah Championship and Youth League competitions.

Four experienced men will take the reigns of Penrith’s four senior representative teams, with Jeff Kilbourne and Rod Miskell looking after the Championship Men and Championship Women teams respectively.

Moore added it was “pleasing” that Miskell and Kilbourne were returning to their respective Championship League roles to help with stability.

Speaking with the Weekender, the Penrith Basketball Association General Manager said she is stepping away from coaching next year to focus on other aspects of basketball.

“I am moving away in 2019 to try and concentrate on assisting all of our girls programs and athletes with skills etc,” Moore said.

“This will allow others the opportunity to develop as head coaches.”

“So far the enrolments indicate we will be able to have the bulk of the leading Championship men return pending the selection process along the way with any Youth Men who are elevated to the top level,” she said.

“As for our women’s teams, we will still be without three players who are currently at College but we are hopeful of a more consistent 2019 season, with the availability of our SEABL players and also the inclusion of two former NSW juniors to the program.”

Draw shock: Stadium stays dark on Saturdays TROY DODDS

enrith will not play on a Saturday at Panthers Stadium next season for the first time in recent memory.

The 2019 NRL Draw was released last week and confirmed that Penrith’s only home game on a Saturday will be played in Bathurst, against Melbourne in Round 3.

As previously reported, Penrith open their 2019 campaign against arch rivals Parramatta at Panthers Stadium on Sunday, March 17 at 4pm.

They play home matches this year against the Eels, Storm, Tigers, Rabbitohs, Warriors, Sea Eagles, Roosters, Titans, Dragons, Raiders, Sharks and Knights.

Six of the home games are on Friday nights, four on Sunday and one on Thursday, with the lone Saturday fixture on March 30 at Carrington Park.

Nine of Penrith’s 12 home matches are Channel Nine free-to-air games.

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed the Panthers and Tigers will do battle in next year’s Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium, with the two western Sydney rivals to play at 6pm on Friday, May 10. All 16 clubs will play in Brisbane that weekend.

Penrith will make two trips to the new Western Sydney Stadium in Parramatta, first taking on the Eels in Round 11 on a Thursday night and then against the Bulldogs in Round 20.

The Panthers will also head to Wagga Wagga next year, taking on the Raiders in what will be a Canberra home game on Saturday, May 4.

In another away trip highlight, the Panthers will most likely play at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the first time since 1985 when they play the Roosters on August 31. Only a clash with the Sydney Swans would force the game to move.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said he was thrilled with next year’s draw across the board.

“We have some blockbuster matches in the early rounds of the Premiership as well as the final rounds,” Mr Greenberg said.

“Sundays in Sydney have been another focus for us. We’ll see 17 traditional derbies between Sydney clubs in family-friendly timeslots throughout the season.”

Origin I will be played at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday, June 5 while Origin II will be played at Perth Stadium on Sunday, June 23. ANZ Stadium hosts the third game on Wednesday, July 10.

he 2019 NRL Draw was released last week, with 11 games to be played at Panthers Stadium next year. We’ve analysed the draw and come up with the five matches you simply can’t miss in 2019.

Round 1: Panthers v Eels (Sunday, March 17 at 4.05pm) This promises to be one of the biggest games of the NRL’s opening weekend, and a sellout crowd is expected to watch these two western Sydney rivals do battle.

This game was sold out in 2018, and fans got their money’s worth with the Panthers coming from 14-0 down to secure two competition points to start the season.

Clashes between Penrith and Parramatta always have plenty of spite and this one will be no different.

Round 4: Panthers v Tigers (Friday, April 5 at 7.50pm) With Ivan Cleary back at the helm of the Panthers next year, this promises to be a real grudge match as Penrith faces his former club, the Wests Tigers.

These two clubs have had a great rivalry

over the years but there’s always something special about taking on the defending champs.

Both sides will be on big turnarounds too, so it promises to be a high energy encounter.

Round 18: Panthers v Dragons (Friday, July 19 at 7.50pm) Last year this was one of the best games of the year at Panthers Stadium. This game also promises to be a beauty with both sides likely to be in serious Finals contention by the time round 18 comes around.

Dragons fans always come to this fixture in big numbers and with a Friday night timeslot there’s a huge chance this game will attract one of the year’s biggest crowds.

Round 21: Panthers v Sharks (Friday, August 9 at 7.50pm) This has become one of the great modern day rivalries with the Panthers and Sharks now all but hating each other.

Whether it’s the Matt Moylan factor, the James Maloney factor or purely the style of games these two clubs have produced in the last couple of seasons, it always seems to produce highlights.

Cleary’s bus diverts back • Five-year deal will make Cleary Penrith’s longest serving coach • Ciraldo and TROY DODDS

he NRL’s worst kept secret has been confirmed with Ivan Cleary returning as head coach of the Penrith Panthers for the next five seasons.

The Panthers confirmed the deal on Monday after Cleary was released from the final two years of his contract at the Wests Tigers, who have signed premiership winner Michael Maguire to replace him.

It will be 47-year-old Cleary’s second stint at the Panthers after he coached the side from 2012 for four seasons before being dramatically sacked after an injuryravaged 2015 season in which the club missed the Finals.

“I am honoured to be back as head coach of Panthers and very much look forward to being part of the future journey,” Cleary said.

“Personally I had a feeling of unfinished business with a club and a community that my family and I enjoy a strong connection with, from grassroots through to NRL players, staff and management.

“We have raised our family in the

community for a number of years and are proud to call it home.”

The Weekender revealed in August that the Panthers had made a dramatic power play to lure Cleary back to the club after sacking Anthony Griffin with two years remaining on his contract.

At the time the Tigers were adamant they would not release Cleary from his 2019 or 2020 commitments, but last Sunday they finally relented after securing the services of Maguire, who won a premiership with Souths in 2014 and is currently in charge of the New Zealand Test side.

Cleary said he enjoyed his time at the Tigers and believes the club is well placed for the future.

“I am very fond of Wests Tigers and all its people,” Cleary said.

“I enjoyed my time there and it is a club heading in the right direction.

“I would like to thank Justin Pascoe and Marina Go for their professionalism throughout.”

Wests Tigers Chair Marina Go thanked Cleary for his efforts while at the club.

“On behalf of everyone at Wests Tigers I would like to thank Ivan for the work he did during his time at the club,” said Go.

There has been speculation that the Panthers were forced to pay compensation to the Tigers, but the Weekender understands that is not the case.

Cleary’s defection to Penrith is likely to force the NRL to introduce new rules to prevent clubs approaching coaches who are contracted long-term.

Cleary is not the first Penrith coach to have a second stint at the club. The side’s inaugural coach Leo Trevena was in charge of the side for the 1967 season and returned for another single season in 1973.

Cleary, who has coached Penrith 98 times, will become the club’s third most capped coach by the end of next season, jumping from seventh spot and overtaking Tim Sheens, Phil Gould, Bob Boland and Matthew Elliott. John Lang’s 125 games would most likely be eclipsed the following season, while Royce Simmons’ club record 177 games would be easily overtaken if Cleary sees out his five-year deal.

Re-joining Penrith will enable Cleary to coach his son Nathan next season. The pair have expressed their desire to work together for some time.

Cameron Ciraldo, who filled the coaching role in a caretaker capacity at the back end of the 2018 season, will remain with Penrith on the coaching staff, as will Peter Wallace.

Cleary addressed the Tigers’ playing group via text message last weekend and is set to speak with his players at Penrith in the coming weeks.

Gentle, who resides in Queensland, completed the picturesque course in 1:36:43.

Royle, who is from Newcastle, finished the race in 1:28:23 and said conditions were favourable.

“The cool conditions made for fast racing overall,” Royle said.

“It was a little bit windy, which slowed the bike down ever so slightly. It was certainly much more comfortable to race in those conditions.”

Starring down the barrel of a record six wins, the Rio Olympian plans to return next year to give it a red hot crack.

“This race is supported by local triathletes and many local businesses and, regardless of whether there is prize money or records to catch, I will always try and support the Nepean Triathlon because they do such a good job out there and it’s one event I always want to be a part of,” Royle said.

900 people entered this year’s Nepean Triathlon, which held a total prize pool of $26,000.

The 2018 Nepean Triathlon was proudly supported by Sydney.com and Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club.

Tomkins returns to Giants and has a point to prove in 2019 NATHAN TAYLOR

fter being told her AFLW journey had come to an end after two seasons, Penrith Aussie Rules star Renee Tomkins has made a remarkable comeback by being re-drafted by the GWS Giants.

Earlier this year, Tomkins was informed by GWS that she wouldn’t be contracted for the 2019 season. However, in a massive backflip, the 32-year-old defender was re-drafted by the same club that cut her at last week’s AFL Women’s Draft in Melbourne.

Tomkins was a member of the inaugural Giants AFLW squad in 2017 and played 11 games for the club over two seasons.

After battling a serious back injury and poor form last season, Tomkins was told her time at the club had come to an end, but was advised that if she kept working hard in the lower grades, she may find her way back in.

Fortunately, the local footy star didn’t have to wait too long to make her return to the big stage, with the Giants selecting her with the 65th pick.

“I missed out on a few games trying to get back into the team and, after that, I was told I wasn’t going to be given a contract straight up,” she said.

Records tumble

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks continue to make a strong push towards the playoffs, defeating the West Sydney Pirates 20-19 in Round 8 of the Gridiron NSW Division 1 competition. Meanwhile, Nepean’s Colts team had a bye last weekend. Nepean’s Division 1 team currently sit in fifth position, while their Colts side are also fifth. Both teams will take on the Sutherland Seahawks this Saturday at Forestville Park.

BASEBALL: After enjoying the bye last round, the Penrith Panthers first grade team will take on Baulkham Hills in Round 7 of the NSW State Baseball League competition. After a number of wash-outs in recent weeks, Penrith will be hoping for some fine weather so they can get some wins on the board. The Panthers currently sit in last position.

A-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers have fallen 2-0 to Sydney FC in a dramatic and at times controversial clash last Saturday night at the SCG. Early goals in each half from Adam Le Fondre and skipper Alex Brosque was the difference for the Sky Blues in front of more than 30,000 fans. The Wanderers thought they had pulled a goal back on the hour mark when Roly Bonevacia squeezed a shot past Andrew Redmayne. But the goal was overturned by the VAR for a foul in the build-up, with Wanderers winger Jaushua Sotirio adjudged to have denied Michael Zullo a chance to get to the ball. The decision angered Wanderers coach Markus Babbel, who was shown a red card by referee Chris Beath. The Wanderers will now turn their attention to this Saturday’s match against the Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium.

W-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers have gone down 3-0 to Sydney FC in the opening round of the W-League at Marconi Stadium. The Sky Blues led 1-0 at half-time after Caitlin Foord opened proceedings 13 minutes in. Sydney FC extended their lead midway through the second stanza with Chloe Logarzo scoring in the 60th minute and Foord getting her second of the evening in the 76th. The Wanderers will look to bounce back when they face the Brisbane Roar this Sunday.

CRICKET: Penrith are in an almost unlosable position heading into the second day of their Round 4 clash against St George in the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Playing in a Two-Day match at Howell Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first.

Penrith were excellent with the bat, posting 5/420 before declaring. Young gun Cameron Weir was on fire, scoring 180 before being bowled out. When St George hit the crease later that day, they were in all sorts, reaching 5/20 before stumps. Ryan Smith was best with the ball for Penrith with 3/19. Action between Penrith and St George will resume this Saturday morning.

ongstanding records tumbled at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith last Sunday morning after Aaron Royle and Ashleigh Gentle were crowned champions of the Nepean Triathlon once again.

The experienced pair put on an absolute masterclass at Australia’s oldest triathlon, with Royle finishing 108 seconds clear of his nearest rival Ryan Bailie, while Gentle was a mere 24 seconds faster than her closest competitor Radka Kahlefeldt.

It was back to back victories for 28-year-old Royle, who notched up his fifth Nepean Triathlon title – equalling Victorian Tim Bentley’s record from the early 1990s.

“Back in the day the Nepean Triathlon was world renowned,” Royle told the Weekender following his victory.

“It was a race that loads of athletes from around the world knew about and loads of Australians wanted to do it. To know I’ll be in the record books for at least the next five years is pretty amazing.”

Gentle also made history herself by becoming the first female to win four crowns.
