SHE MADE E IT UP lizabeth Luque’s shocking story of a violent home invasion that left her bound and gagged inside her Glenmore Park home earlier this month rattled the community.

But it’s now been alleged that she fabricated the entire story. The 33-year-old was arrested by police on Monday and charged with a range of offences including perverting the course of justice and making a false accusation.

Ms Luque even recorded a television interview with Channel Nine, in which she detailed how she felt during the ordeal.

“I remember thinking that was when I was going to die,” she said.

“I was panicking because I was being basically strangled. He kicked me in the ribs and I just passed out.”

Bradbury shaken by terror attacks Exclusive: Former Lindsay MP now lives and works in Paris; says attacks are “incomprehensible” NATHAN TAYLOR

ormer Lindsay MP David Bradbury has labelled the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, that killed more than 130 people and injured many more, as “incomprehensible acts of brutality”.

Now living and working in the French capital, Mr Bradbury is the current Head of Tax Policy and Statistics Division at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Speaking with the Weekender from Paris on Wednesday, the former Assistant Treasurer revealed he was in London during the time of the tragic events while his young family were back home in Paris.

“I had travelled to London on the Eurostar on Friday night to speak at a conference on the Saturday morning,” he said.

“Earlier in the evening I travelled to Gare du Nord train station in Paris and, on my way there, the train was packed with people travelling to the France v Germany football match at Stade de France.”

The stadium, located on the outskirts of the city, was one of several locations targeted during the coordinated attacks.

“As I arrived in my hotel room in London, I switched on the TV to the news that there

had been a possible terrorist attack at Stade de France,” Mr Bradbury said.

“I couldn’t help but wonder whether any of the people who I shared the carriage with earlier in the night had been caught up in the attacks.”

As word of the horrendous attacks started to intensify, Mr Bradbury’s main concern was for his wife and four children back in Paris.

“My immediate reaction was to check on my family, who thankfully were all safe and sound in our apartment. I then started sending messages to our family back in Australia to reassure them that we were all safe,” he said.

“When President Hollande announced that he was closing the borders, I began to wonder whether I was going to have trouble returning to my family in Paris.

Thankfully, this was not a problem.”

As news of the attacks began to spread across the globe, Mr Bradbury said he received numerous emails and text messages from friends and family back in Penrith to check on his wellbeing.

Once the 39-year-old was assured of his own family’s safety, his concern then shifted to the welfare of his French friends and the staff in his division.

“Thankfully, I don’t know anyone personally that was injured or killed in these incidents, but I know a number of people who had friends that were affected.”

Mr Bradbury said the usual bustling streets of Paris were definitely a lot quieter and the lovable locals were generally subdued.

“Having suffered the shock of the Charlie Hebdo shootings in January, I think there is a real sense that these attacks were even more shocking, due to the number of lives lost and nature of the attacks,” he said.

here is no question that the attacks on Paris last weekend were horrific, tragic and terrifying to watch unfold.

I visited Paris for the first time just last year and to think of that vibrant, beautiful city on its knees is just awful.

Unfortunately, alongside the tragedy that surrounds events such as what happened in Paris on the blackest of Fridays comes another dangerous element: individual opinions.

The rise of social media means that more and more, we as individuals add to the story.

Some of it is extremely positive – quite often, we see examples of extraordinary community spirit following tragedies such as this. We see the world coming together as one, united in grief and support for those affected.

Unfortunately, we also see the other side of the public response.

We see ‘friends’ on Facebook posting hate fuelled rants, often uninformed, and creating exactly what those behind atrocities such as Paris want: division.

Often, they are ‘friends’ that we suddenly see in a whole new light.

People we thought were level-headed, understanding and sensible, who leave facts to one side and, in truth, embarrass themselves publicly.

We see others on Facebook and Twitter who want to criticise the media for rolling coverage or sending key network talent to Paris, and in the same breath be critical of the media’s lack of coverage of other recent tragic events.

The media often can’t win in situations like this – the fine line between too little and too much is very easy to cross given

all of us respond differently to such major stories. Some want to be glued to rolling coverage, others simply want to look away.

We all have a remote control for a reason. Use it instead of your keyboard and I guarantee you’ll feel better.

And then of course there’s the widespread social media comments about the lack of media coverage, public compassion and general discussion about recent tragedies in other parts of the world such as Baghdad and Beirut.

Oddly enough, most of those people complaining about ‘selective compassion’ and essentially trying to make others feel bad about showing grief for the victims of the attack in Paris, themselves didn’t say a word about Baghdad and Beirut after the tragedies happened.

Why not? Why is it only when another tragedy occurred that they suddenly made their feelings so public?

Truth is that the incidents in both Beirut and Baghdad, for example, were actually covered in the wider media.

But these days, more than ever before, news directors and editors know what their viewers, listeners and readers respond to.

The truth is that when a city like Paris is attacked, we do feel a greater sense of grief.

That is not to say that one person’s life is more important than any other, but when attacks occur in cities that we know well, we feel a greater attachment.

When attacks occur in cities that operate very similar to the way we do here at home, it has a deeper impact.

It seems that attacks like the one on Paris last week bring out the best and worst of us.

There is absolutely no question that Waleed Aly owned the week as far as public comment was concerned.

His brilliant editorial on ‘The Project’ on Monday night was poignant, spot on and clearly addressed the reality of what we confront. In four minutes of TV, he explained the situation better than anyone has previously. If you haven’t seen it, I urge you to find it online.

Do we have a reason to live with a degree of fear?

Of course we do.

These are frightening times, and the blunt reality that you could simply be enjoying a concert, or having a meal at a cafe, and then face an act of terror is indeed a scary situation that the events of last week truly bring home.

But giving ISIL what they want, which is division and fear, should not be our response. We need to be bigger, braver and more informed than that.

Police: Attack didn’t happen

n a bizarre and unexpected turn of events, a Glenmore Park woman has been charged after she was found bound and gagged at her home earlier this month, with police claiming she fabricated the story.

The 33-year-old, who has been named as Elizabeth Luque, claimed she had been assaulted and tied up in what police at the time labelled a ‘targeted attack’.

Ms Luque was found in her Glenmore Park home at about 2am on Wednesday, November 4. She was on the kitchen floor in a semi-conscious state, bound and gagged with a phone on the floor close by.

Police responded after a 000 call.

Strike Force Ayre was formed to investigate the claims, comprising detectives from Penrith Local Area Command and the Sex Crimes Squad.

In a stunning twist, Ms Luque was arrested at her home on Monday and was taken to Penrith Police Station.

She was charged with ‘pervert the course of justice’, ‘make false accusation’, and ‘public mischief’.

It’s alleged she provided false and misleading information to police officers three times including information about a sexual assault, a break and enter and deprivation of liberty.

It is not known what motivated Ms Luque to make the claims.

Appearing at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, Ms Luque did not apply for bail and went back into police custody.

She was due to appear in court again on Wednesday.

Kingswood: Man wanted after attempted robbery at servo

Woman caught drink driving twice on the same day

Police have released CCTV stills of a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries in relation to an attempted armed robbery in Kingswood.

At about 6.30am on Monday, September 28, a man armed with a knife walked into a corner store on Manning Street in Kingswood and demanded money from the attendant working behind the counter.

The attendant, a 54-year-old man, armed himself with a piece of wood, prompting the man with the knife to smash some jars of food before fleeing the store empty-handed.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, approximately 180cm tall with brown hair and stubble on his face. He was wearing a Nike cap, and a dark jumper with the letters ‘DLX’ on the front.

Police managed to catch a woman high-range drink driving twice within three hours on Saturday.

At around 11.20am on Saturday, November 14, police stopped a Mazda MX5 which was being driven in an erratic manner in the westbound lanes of the M4 at Emu Plains.

A 61-year-old woman from Mulgoa was driving the vehicle and having returned a positive breath test result, was taken to Penrith Police Station where she returned a reading of 0.252.

Her license was suspended on the spot and she was issued with a field court attendance notice.

Around 2pm on the same day, police stopped the woman driving the same car along the M4 Motorway at Jamisontown.

She returned a reading of 0.222 on a breath analysis test at Penrith Police Station.

Penrith: Arrests and charges following special operation

Police have charged a teenage boy with armed robbery and an adult male with firearm offences after executing a search warrant.

Police investigating an armed robbery at a service station at Werrington on October 20 and a service station at Colyton on November 2 executed a search warrant at a home on Warbler Street in Erskine Park following inquiries.

A 50-year-old man was arrested at the address for firearm offences.

During the search, the man’s 17-year-old son arrived and was also arrested and charged over the Colyton incident.

Police ran ‘Operation Light Fingers’ last week and made several arrests.

On Thursday, November 12, police officers attached to Penrith Local Area Command were patrolling the Penrith CBD as part of the operation.

Officers were successful in making six arrests, handing out five criminal infringement notices, three children’s cautions, and three cannabis cautions.

Police also laid out seven charges, with three charges relating to ‘goods in custody’.

Police said it was a successful operation.

abor will go to a preselection battle to decide a candidate to take on sitting Liberal MP Fiona Scott at next year’s Federal Election.

Ross Beaton and Emma Husar are both in the running to be the Labor candidate for Lindsay with a ballot to be held on December 12.

Ms Husar is likely to have the inside edge given she has a public profile following a failed bid to unseat Stuart Ayres at the NSW Election earlier this year.

Veteran Labor Party member, Penrith City Councillor and Federal Electoral Council President, John Thain said the candidates can’t speak with the media until after the ballot.

“The party policy is that nominees aren’t supposed to talk until a candidate is chosen,” he said.

“But, they’re both excellent nominees and I’m sure whoever wins will be a great candidate for the upcoming Federal Election.”

Cr Thain said both nominees have previously represented the Labor Party well.

“Ross Beaton is a consultant on social policy for NGO’s, and was a candidate in

the 2008 Penrith Council election, but just missed out by about 60 votes in the East Ward,” he said.

“Emma Husar was Penrith’s candidate in the State Election and did well against Stuart Ayres.”

Labor will now work out the number of people who can vote to decide the candidate in the ballot on December 12.

“There’s a thing called ‘credentialing’ that takes place and it works out the number of local Labor Party members in the Lindsay seat that can vote,” he said.

“Credentialing was part of the reason we couldn’t hold a preselection [until now] because of the unknown boundaries of the Lindsay electorate.

“Then, from December 12, we will have a candidate ready to challenge Fiona.”

Ms Scott holds Lindsay by a narrow margin for the Liberals but would be buoyed by recent positive polling for new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Lindsay has always been held by the government of the day, so matters in Canberra remain critical to the chances of candidates from either party.

Ms Scott wouldn’t comment on her potential opponents, saying only that the preselection was a matter for the Labor Party.

Hot day ahead Temperatures are expected to soar over 40 degrees in Penrith today (Friday, November 20).

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicts it’ll hit 41 degrees in Penrith this afternoon.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Director of Public Health, Dr Bradley Forssman, said to drink plenty of water, avoid alcoholic, sugary or caffeinated drinks and be aware of health symptoms during the hot weather.

“Keep cool, and if possible, stay in an airconditioned building. You can also keep your house cool by drawing blinds and curtains,” he said.

BOM Meteorologist, Zac Porter, said the sudden hot conditions are from a high pressure system and a north westerly breeze bringing hot air from inland.

Positive rail news Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown has welcomed a plan to look at options for rail in western Sydney, but the good news won’t slow down her own rail campaign.

The State and Federal Governments announced a scoping study that will examine the need for rail to support western Sydney’s proposed airport and surrounding growth areas.

But after campaigning for a rail link to Penrith to be open at the same time as the airport, Cr McKeown won’t be resting on her laurels.

“I think we should always keep our finger on this. Council will certainly still continue to advocate until the northsouth rail links with Penrith,” she said.

History saved despite road upgrade Luddenham locals pleased after businesses and historic buildings spared DALE DRINKWATER

uddenham business and heritage buildings will be spared during the upgrade of The Northern Road.

The preferred route for the 11km stretch of The Northern Road Upgrade Stage Four has been decided, and bypasses the small town’s centre to the east.

State and Federal Governments announced the route last week, that provided relief to the Luddenham Progress Association.

Association spokesperson, Wayne Willmington, said the eastern option preserves all heritage listed buildings in Luddenham and provides the best access to the town.

“It’s great because my ancestors were involved in constructing many buildings in the 1800s. It’s good not only for me, but for the local community,” he said.

“The eastern option will have two ways accessing Luddenham from each end, it won’t make Luddenham a dead end like the other options. It’s the correct option for Luddenham in the long term.

“You can either stay on the freeway or you can divert off into Luddenham.”

The Northern Road Upgrade Stage Four is part of a wider $3.6 billion Western

Sydney Infrastructure Plan, that will increase road capacity, reduce future congestion and improve safety.

Federal Minister for Major Projects, Paul Fletcher said the selection of the 11 kilometre route is a major milestone.

“The stage four upgrade will widen 11 kilometres of road to four lanes between Mersey Road at Bringelly and Littlefields Road at Luddenham and will be critical in the network of roads being built to service the western Sydney airport,” he said.

The Government will now work on the preliminary design, and the community will be invited to provide feedback.

Ready for what’s ahead: Regentville Fire and Rescue’s new recruits “I’m a little bit nervous but I’ve heard the crew at Regentville are awesome, and I’m excited to be joining the station,” he said.

The trio trained for 13 weeks at the Fire and Rescue NSW State Training College at Alexandria with Mr Welsh enjoying learning how to work as part of a team.

“The best parts of training were definitely having that aspect of teamwork and also the live fire training which we did at Londonderry,” he said.

Mr Welsh said he won’t be taking the job lightly.

James Hall and Todd Kerr have also joined Regentville Fire and Rescue after graduating last week.

November 25 is White Ribbon Day, and from 5.30pm, Penrith residents can take part in a free 3.5 kilometre Twilight Ribbon Walk.

John Rosewarne, Chair of White Ribbon Australia, applauded communities like Penrith which unite to bring an end to men’s violence against women.

“These communities represent the critical role of collective action to drive change. It is everyone’s responsibility to make this happen,” he said.

“We need ongoing action amongst our schools, workplaces, sporting clubs and politicians if we are to become a society committed to respect, stopping the violence and delivering true gender equality.”

Penrith’s walk will kick off from Weir Reserve, and travel along the eastern side of the stunning Nepean River stopping at Tench Reserve.

At Tench Reserve from 6.30pm, there will be a White Ribbon Oath reading, and an array of food stalls, live music and entertainment until 7.30pm.

On Wednesday, November 25 I will be leading the White Ribbon Day Twilight River Walk from Weir Reserve to Tench Reserve and I ask that as many people from the Penrith community come and join me.

The short 3.5km walk starts at 5.30pm and is a great opportunity to show “Penrith Says No to Domestic Violence.” Penrith Council is proud to support the efforts of White Ribbon in bringing an end to violence against women.

Violence against women is a serious problem in Australia where over a 12 month period, on average, one woman is killed every week as a result of domestic violence. However, domestic violence should not be just thought of as physical abuse, it can take many different forms including intimidation, coercion or isolation, emotional, sexual and financial abuse.

Many women experiencing domestic violence cope with it alone. While they may develop a range of active strategies to protect themselves and limit the impact of the violence, many do not seek any outside help — they tell nobody at all. When they do disclose the situation to a family member or

friend, the first response often affects how, and whether, they will proceed further.

Violence against women is underreported and statistics show that a victim of violence is more likely to discuss and disclose their experience to a friend or family member than to the police or another public authority.

A change in people’s attitudes towards violence is needed. Building greater equality and respect between men and women can reduce attitudes that support or ignore domestic violence.

Too many women live with fear and violence. It could be your mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend, partner or colleague. We can and must work towards stopping violence against women so that all women can live in safety, free from violence and abuse.

Stopping violence is everyone’s responsibility.

After finishing the walk there will be a range or merchandise available, food stalls, live music and a shuttle bus service back to Weir Reserve for anyone who has parked their car there.

he Rotary Club of Penrith celebrated an historic milestone in style on Monday night with their 70th Anniversary Dinner.

Held at the picturesque Glenbrook RAAF Base, the Rotary Club of Penrith 70th Anniversary Dinner celebrated seven wonderful decades of Rotary in Penrith.

Many past presidents were in attendance as were current and former members of the Rotary Club of Penrith.

Speaking on the night, Rotary Club of

Penrith President, John Harding, said it was a pleasure to see so many current and former members attend. “It is a great pleasure to greet past members of the club and to see the faces of members, who have not seen each other for a while, link up again,� he said. “I know you all have had many challenges in Rotary in your desire to make this world a better place to live both locally and internationally.�

The night also featured an interesting presentation on the extensive history of the local club as well as a run down on the many past presidents and their legacies.

Emily’s tragic death can help others Local author aims to create children’s book that will help improve understanding of mental health DALE DRINKWATER

ne local crusader is creating the gift that keeps on giving, but she needs your help.

Passionate writer Celeste Cannell is creating a children’s picture book in honour of a young friend, Emily.

Emily was Ms Cannell’s best friend’s daughter, and just three months after being diagnosed with clinical depression, 16-year-old Emily tragically took her own life.

In early September, the Weekender published an article Ms Cannell wrote about the lesson Emily’s death can teach us all – that it’s never too early to talk about how you’re feeling.

“It’s too late to teach someone who’s drowning, how to swim,” Ms Cannell said.

Two years after Emily’s death, Ms Cannell is rounding up community support to raise funds to self publish her new children’s book.

“The book is titled Emily and the VERY Big Feeling, and is aimed at helping parents and children understand and communicate about issues surrounding anxiety and depression,” Ms Cannell said.

“It will unpack what’s going on in a

child’s head when they say ‘nothing’. As a parent, we need to be able to show that we get it.”

Privately publishing the book will enable Ms Cannell to embark on a wider campaign, and invite children from schools across the nation to contribute to the illustrations.

“To draw the illustrations, it means that they need to read the book,” she said.

Ms Cannell envisages the book will include a foreword from Emily’s mother and a special section at the back outlining tips and tools to recognise and support the early warning signs of mental health conditions in young children.

“My plan is to invite RUOK?, Headspace and Smiling Mind to each contribute content to the back of the book with a percentage of profits from the book’s sale to be shared between them,” she said.

“Funds will also go towards creating our own non-profit organisation, the Shine Bright Foundation, that will aim to introduce innovative mental health programs to high school students.”

he Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest is celebrating after scoring a $40,000 grant, allowing them to commission new works for their highly anticipated ‘Gravity (and Wonder)’ exhibition next year.

Only one NSW gallery can receive the Dobell Exhibition Grant each year, and Penrith Regional Gallery is it for 2016.

Gallery employees pitched their ‘Gravity (and Wonder)’ exhibition for their chance to receive the grant.

Scheduled to run from August next year, the exhibition is something different for the gallery as it has a collaborative nature.

Director of The Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest, Dr LeeAnne Hall, said it’s an exciting project.

“The exhibition and associated programming will enable western Sydney audiences to access outstanding contemporary art, and remarkable objects and artifacts in exploration of the wondrous universal law of Gravity,” she said.

The exhibition will introduce audiences to new ways of thinking about the multi-dimensional aspects of matter, time and space through a range of loaned and newly commissioned works.

Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall Over a dozen contemporary artists will participate in the presentation with staff and students from the Western Sydney University Observatory also collaborating with the gallery on the special project.

The exhibition is scheduled to open on August 28, 2016 and run until November 21, 2016.

School shows true Christmas spirit Penrith Anglican College teachers and students collect food and toys for those less fortunate JADE ALIPRANDI

or over 15 years Penrith Anglican College students and teachers have rallied together to help support the less fortunate during Christmas, and it isn’t any different this year.

Participating in Anglicare Sydney’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign, more than 1,300 Penrith Anglican College students across 53 classes will collect Christmas food and new toys throughout November to be packed into special Christmas hampers.

Headmaster at Penrith Anglican College, Mark Lewis, said Toys ‘n’ Tucker is a big, whole school event.

“The school fosters a perspective of caring for and serving others in our local and global communities,” he said.

“As an Anglican College it was an obvious choice to make a long-term commitment to supporting Anglicare.

“We hope that the students become aware of other members of the community who are facing tough times.”

Organiser of the event, Beth Hazell, said it’s a fantastic initiative.

“It’s a whole school event and everyone gets involved which is a great thing,” she said.

New group aims to bring local women together JADE ALIPRANDI

omen of the Penrith area are being welcomed with open arms into the Jordan Springs Women’s Community Group.

Director of the group, Laura Watson, has taken it upon herself to connect with the women of the Penrith area to help inspire and motivate them through her new Facebook group and not-for-profit organisation.

Also a mum of two, runway model, motivational speaker and local business owner in Penrith, Ms Watson said she wants women to feel appreciated.

“The page is doing really well so far with around 140 likes,” Ms Watson said.

“I understand where people are coming from in terms of a scam or a catch but there isn’t at all – I just want women to come together for a couple of hours a month to listen and give back to themselves.”

One of the first fundraisers Ms Watson will host through the group is a White Ribbon walk around Jordan Springs Lake this coming Sunday, November 22.

Ms Watson isn’t stopping there and has recently been in contact with Cambridge Park resident, Candice Jones, in regards to a memorial day for her son Jake Carroll

who only recently passed away after a long battle with an illness.

The Weekender first spoke to Ms Jones in late May ahead of a fundraiser night that was being held in Jake’s honour after he was diagnosed with Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome and Plastic Bronchitis.

“We are busy getting people from the community on board for the memorial day,” Ms Watson said.

“Ms Jones thought the idea was great and so I’m going to host it through my group and hold it at Jordan Springs Lake near the park as that’s where Jake liked to play a lot.”

Ms Watson’s not-for-profit organisation is primarily about helping women in the community overcome their fears or to be inspired by other women in the area.

“I want to help inspire and motivate women of all ages and cultures and to make them feel appreciated,” she said.

“We discuss important topics such as women’s health, mentality, depression and anxiety, food and fitness, and building confidence.”

St Marys will be the home of a new Community Recycling Centre.

Penrith Council has partnered with Toxfree Solutions Ltd to establish the centre at 66 Links Road, that will enable locals to drop off waste year round. $162,000 from the NSW Government will build the drop-off facility, where residents can recycle and safely dispose of household problem waste. The centre will take waste such as water-based and oil-based paints, used motor and cooking oils, lead-acid and hand-held batteries, gas cylinders and fire extinguishers, conventional tube and compact fluorescent lamps and smoke detectors.

The centre will be operational in 2016.

Council has released the comments from a community survey that indicates some residents are as frustrated with the lack of a planned rail link from the new airport to the T1 Western Line as Council is. The survey results also showed that Penrith residents commute for over two hours each day to work in other parts of western Sydney. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said this shows the inefficiency of our current transport system. One resident said the North West and South West Rail Lines need to connect with the Western Line at

Penrith or St Marys. “Poor transport links from western Sydney means that employment opportunities that may be geographically closer actually take longer to get to,” one resident said. Council is using this information in their campaign for a rail link to and from the proposed airport. The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey. com/r/extendrail.

Residents and business owners around two water catchments in the region are asked to share their flooding experiences. Council is preparing overland flow flood studies for two catchments, and investing over $450,000 that will update existing flood information, and help plan, predict and manage the risk of flooding across the areas. One study is on the Little Creek catchment, that spans across St Marys, North St Marys, Oxley Park and Colyton. The second is College, Orth and Werrington Creeks catchment across Werrington, Werrington County, Cambridge Park, Kingswood and Caddens. Residents are encouraged to provide information relating to their experiences of flooding by Friday, November 27.

The next Ordinary Council Meeting will be held on Monday, November 23.

Penrith MP and Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres attended the meeting alongside Penrith Council, which presented its three month adventure tourism campaign.

Sandra Chipchase, CEO of Destination NSW commended Penrith Council’s campaign, and said they have their strategy right.

“They have done careful planning, an audit of their assets and they’ve started to look at how they garner local support and I think that’s why it’s so strong, that’s why the campaign is working,” she said.

“This is the adventure capital of NSW, very clearly. You’ve got a brand message that’s genuine and deliverable.”

Ms Chipchase said Penrith’s campaign is a great template for other parts of the state.

“Penrith is getting it right, they admit there is still a lot of work to do but with this sort of momentum and infrastructure, this is a partnership which is going to grow,” she said.

or the first time in Penrith, locals can head to Jamison Park to raise money for melanoma research.

Host of ‘March for Melanoma’, Debbie Henry, is calling out for people to sign up.

“We have the highest incidence of melanoma in the world – people who have been touched by this disease might be interested in registering for the event,” Ms Henry said.

“I’m passionate about this disease and I’d love to stamp it out.”

Ms Henry is one of the lucky ones after her melanoma was found early, however both her brother and husband have passed away because of it.

“My husband passed away when our baby was just three-months-old,” Ms Henry said.

“A lot of people that are getting mela-

noma are younger and they’re our future, so I really want to help in any way I can to prevent this disease from happening to people.”

Participants in the fundraiser will march around Jamison Park for a total of four kilometres.

The event has been successful in other areas such as Wollongong, Picton, Manly and Wagga Wagga, with Ms Henry hoping for at least 300 walkers for the western Sydney event.

“The Melanoma Institute has had success in the last couple of years and if we can continue to help that, then that’s a good thing,” she said.

“The more walkers we have means we raise more money which is good for Melanoma Institute Australia.”

Art on the prowl

Talented students have work displayed at Fernhill Students from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School were lucky enough to have their work showcased at a special exhibition at Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa.

As part of a partnership with Panthers on the Prowl, the group of students, mostly from Years 7, 8, and 9, were taken to Fernhill Estate earlier this year to create artworks inspired by the grounds.

Using charcoal, pastels, and oil paint among other mediums, the students managed to finish their array of works and had them displayed for guests at an exhibition on Friday, November 6.

“The quality was just outstanding and the students really engaged with the estate and the history that is there,” Art teacher, Belinda Douglass said.

The artworks are now being displayed in the school office.

his week the mainstream media, social media and everyday conversations have been flooded with stories of terrorism in Paris and Beirut. A quick Google search will show you that acts of terrorism are a regular occurrence at this time in history; some claiming many lives, others smaller in scale that tend to go unreported by mainstream media.

It can make the world look like a scary place. It can be debilitating, wondering what the future holds and living in fear of what might happen.

My personal Facebook profile picture is an image of a head, with the quote “A head full of fears has no space for dreams”.

Although I have had this profile image for quite a while, it seems very pertinent now.

When we are witness to so many atrocities around the world, and in our own backyard, it can be easy to let fear fill our heads.

But now more than ever, I think it is an important mantra to remind ourselves of, both in our personal lives and in

business. If we let fear cripple us, we will never move forward and achieve our goals and dreams. If we let fear cripple us, the source of that fear is victorious.

Sometimes for business owners, that fear is related to external factors: will I get enough clients to make ends meet? Will that change in government policy adversely affect my business?

Sometimes, the fear is simply of the unknown. Or a fear of not being ‘good enough’ to succeed.

Wherever your fear stems from, don’t let it rule you.

In the same way most of us believe that today’s terrorists ‘win’ if we succumb to our fears, don’t fill your head with fears and worries that most likely will never happen.

Shift your thoughts, filter out the fears, and focus on your dreams.

Your dreams are what has got you this far, not your fears.

Focus on the dreams, the good and what you want to achieve, and leave no space for fear.

ost Australians spend about one third of their lives at work, so being healthy at work can make a big impact on helping to reduce the occurrence of lifestyle-related chronic disease and obesity.

The substantial changes in the rates of overweight and obesity across the whole Australian population are also likely to see a rise in the incidence of chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke, and increased pressure on the health system.

Preventable conditions now account for around one third of the total burden of disease in Australia.

I believe and read often that good overall health has many spinoff benefits for a career. Supporting good health in workplaces can have benefits for the individual, the employer/business and overall productivity.

It is no surprise that a healthy worker is good for business. Some businesses are even implementing health programs which encourages employees to work together, be engaged in their jobs, and enjoy their work. In the longer term,

they have seen gains in staff attraction and retention, improved productivity, enhanced corporate image, and reductions in absenteeism.

When thinking about good health and wellbeing in the workplace, Fitness Australia says the best method is to go back to basics, which rings so true: Rest: Both the quality and quantity of healthy sleep are important. A lack of sleep affects our mental and physical performance and our mood. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

Exercise/movement: A mix of aerobic exercise plus some strengthening and stretching exercises throughout the week will help keep you stay strong, fit and flexible at any age. Exercise also gives you an energy boost.

Nutrition: The food that you choose should be good for your body. Your body needs regular nutrients and energy to function effectively like protein, vegetables, whole grains and fruits.

Hydration: Water is pure and available free in most workplaces. Ditch the sugary drinks. Limit the intake of drinks that dehydrate you such as alcohol and coffee.

hese days we tend to take rock n roll music for granted, as if it has always been there. But iconic Australian musician Glenn Shorrock still remembers when the music craze first hit Australian shores in the 1950s.

“I was a young teenager when rock n roll, and more generally American

culture, came to this country in the guise of American TV and Elvis Presley,” the singer/songwriter said of his first taste of this heavier sound.

“That was an inspiration for a boy growing up in a fairly black and white environment.

“Everything turned to technicolour after that.”

And in technicolour it would remain.

Since those early years Glenn Shorrock has forged a hugely successful career in music.

In the 1960s he began singing with the Twilights, before he helped form Little River Band in 1975.

“People still want to hear the old stuff and I’m quite willing to do that... without them I wouldn’t be where I am”

The band was one of the first to break into the tough US market, earning themselves eight top 10 hits in the process.

To this day they have sold over 25 million albums and have had a string of hits including ‘Help is on its Way’, ‘Long Jumping Jeweler’, ‘Emma’ and ‘Shut Down Turn Off’.

Glenn has also had the honour of being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, not once, but twice; both for his solo work and for his work with Little River Band.

“I’ve achieved much more than I ever intended,” Glenn said.

“I didn’t intend to reach the top of the charts in America, but when that goal looked closer then I worked harder for it.

“But initially I was just entrapped by the music, and I still am.”

Along with his career in music Glenn has also enjoyed much success on stage, starring in productions of ‘Evita’, ‘One for the Money’ and ‘The Rocky Horror Show’.

Glenn also had the chance to work alongside The Beatles’ producer and mentor Sir George Martin on the acclaimed 1998 production ‘All You Need is Beatles’, which he described as a career highlight.

While there is still an American version of Little River Band touring today, it doesn’t contain any of the band’s original members.

Glenn admits that while he doesn’t mind the band using his songs, he does mind when they take on his likeness.

“I never thought I’d find myself in that position that there’s a band that’s pretending to be me as it were,” he said.

“They’ll never show their face in this country, I don’t think, because they’re seen as impostors, and they are seen as impostors as well to a lot of the American fans.

“I’m OK with them still using my music, because that keeps the music alive and that’s the essence of it really, the music.

“It’s just when they pretend to be me and use my likeness and my sound, to publicise a history, which is not their history, it’s my history.”

Regardless of these frustrations Glenn is still recording and touring, and loving every minute of it.

Come December local audiences will have the chance to see this seasoned entertainer when he performs at the Evan Theatre.

It’ll be a great chance for fans to revive some of their rock n roll memories.

“It will be a chronological musical journey through my career for the 50 years that I’ve done,” Glenn said of the show.

“Obviously there’s a lot that I can’t do in that amount of time but I do a good two hour show and I cover most bases from the early 60s, when I first started, to now.”

Glenn is also currently working on new material but until it’s ready to be heard he is happy to keep performing the classics.

“People still want to hear the old stuff and I’m quite willing to do that because without that old collection of hits I wouldn’t be where I am,” he said.

Australian Chamber Orchestra’s rare visit to Penrith

t’s been over two decades since they last performed at The Joan, but this November the Australian Chamber Orchestra is heading back to Penrith for a concert that’s not to be missed.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra, which is considered to be one of the world’s most acclaimed chamber ensembles, will be performing ‘Four Seasons’, the most popular work from legendary composer Antonio Vivaldi.

‘Four Seasons’ is a group of four violin concertos that uses music to explore the sounds of the seasons.

BOOK From the Heart – A Collection from Women of Letters

Curated by Michaela McGuire and Marieke Hardy // KATE REID This is the sixth release for Women of Letters, which started as a series of letter writing events featuring some of Australia’s most well known female writers, musicians, comedians and politicians. The event has since expanded to include prominent Australian men as well as international guests.

This collection, which was curated

by Women of Letters founders Michaela McGuire and Marieke Hardy, features letters from Senator Penny Wong, musician Amanda Palmer, triple J presenter Zan Rowe, science guru Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, media personality Derryn Hinch and

many others. The beauty of these letters is in the way they offer a peek into the minds and experiences of a range of people from different backgrounds.

Some are touching, others are funny, but all are surprisingly honest, and often quite raw.

The collection is broken up into sections which cover topics like ‘To The Time I Changed My Mind’, ‘To The Woman Who Changed My Life’ and ‘To Something I’ve Lost’ This is a beautiful book that can be enjoyed all at once or in parts.

One Direction

Made in the A.M. // KATE REID Let’s be honest, One Direction could create an album of experimental recorder music and it would still sell through the roof. These guys have well and truly got the teenage girl market cornered.

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, that’s clearly their focus and they’ve done it successfully for several years now.

Their new release, ‘Made in the A.M.’ is another pretty decent pop album. Its lyrics focus heavily on love. ‘Drag Me Down’ is catchy as hell (and now permanently etched in my brain), ‘End of the Day’ is a rousing sunshine-y anthem and ‘I Want to Write You a Song’ is a nice little guitar ballad that fans will likely swoon over.

No doubt die hard Directioners are still upset about the group’s planned break in 2016, but hopefully ‘Made in the A.M.’ will give them something to hold onto until the band’s next release, or the planned solo projects of its members.

It’s 1940 and German soldiers have taken up residency in a small French town where Lucile Angellier (Michelle Williams) lives with mother in law Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas) while her soldier husband is away fighting in the war.

When a German commander, Bruno (Matthias Schoenaerts), is sent to live with the pair a romance blossoms in the most unexpected of circumstances.

‘Suite Francaise’ is a romantic drama based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Irene Nemirovsky. While the film offers an interesting narrative, at times it shies away from heavier themes and becomes a little too sentimental.

Michelle Williams provides another

great performance as Lucile while Matthias Schoenaerts is a stand out in the role of German soldier Bruno, who perfectly encapsulates the character’s mix of stoicism and emotion.

Overall this is a great film, although with a little more depth in terms of both character and narrative this could have been a brilliant movie.

ith the Festive Season not all that far away and attention turning to decisions about the bubbles to go with it, a label to give thought to for quality, price-value and as something of a talking point, is Spain’s Segura Viudas Grand Cuvee Reserva.

Hailing from the Penedes region 50km south of Barcelona, Segura Viudas winery began life in the 11th century as a military watch tower before it evolved into a winery in the 19th century.

Today it’s part of the vast Freixenet wine company stable with its Grand Cuvee Reserva a great choice for entertaining or special-occasion dining – and interestingly 85 per cent made from the traditional Spanish varieties of Macabeo and Parellada that give it wonderful fruit flavours, and the remaining 15 per cent originally-French Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for lovely acid balance.

Officially classified as a Cava, a Segura Viudas Grand Cuvee Reserva 2011 was made in the Methode Traditionelle, and at $25 is a perfect match served well-chilled with upcoming Festive Season aperitifs such as pate and honey-glazed prawns.

One to note: If you are among Australia’s expanding ranks of Merlot lovers, a rewarding example from one of our major growing areas, McLaren Vale is Shottesbrooke Estate’s just-released 2013 vintage.

At $20 and with those red fruit flavours along with a touch of light oak and some fine and savoury tannins, this Shottesbrooke 2013 is just the drop to put together with meatballs in a rich tomato sauce.

HOW DID THE BAND GET TOGETHER: Rob Carney and myself (Bobby Russell) were in a band together that had broken up. We met Garry Tomkins and started to work on new songs together. After several line-up changes with singers and drummers, we finally ended up with Spyda and Darren McGilvary. The band wrote 12 tracks and went into the studio in April to record their debut album, ‘Play Loud’.

In the Bible’s book of Psalms, we find the writer talking to himself, and asking himself these big questions; “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?”

These are big questions, and perhaps not surprisingly, they are questions people are asking today.

Many people today are

troubled by the events they see in our world.

This creates uncertainty, perhaps even fear.

See how the writer of the Psalm answers himself, “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God”.

In this world, real sustainable, concrete hope is hard to find. In another book of the Bible, the hope God can give us is described as “an anchor for the soul”.

In other words, in times of trouble, doubt, or uncertainty, the hope God can give us as we trust in Jesus can take away fear and create stability and confidence.

Where we might feel downcast or disturbed, the fact we can know that in Jesus, God has shown His love to us, can speak into our lives, giving us real hope so that we too can praise God, our Saviour.

What are the signs of pancreatitis and how is it diagnosed? Symptoms vary depending on severity but include a painful abdomen, depression, vomiting, fever and diarrhoea.

In very severe cases, dogs may become collapsed and develop life threatening infections. Pancreatitis is usually suspected based on history and presentation.

A definitive diagnosis is usually made with a combination of bloodwork and abdominal imaging (ie. x-rays or ultrasound).

It is important that other problems such as intestinal obstructions are ruled out as these can cause similar symptoms.

How do we treat it? Treatment for pancreatitis is supportive and the aim is to correct dehydration, provide pain relief, control vomiting and prevent infection.

Affected animals generally need to be placed on intravenous fluids for several days and given anti-nausea medications, pain relief and antibiotics.

Treating pancreatitis can sometimes be expensive as treatment can be prolonged so it is always great to consider pet insurance from a young age.

Each year, hundreds of Australian families have a child presented to emergency rooms after an immersion accident.

For every child drowning death there are three to four

more children admitted to hospital as a result of a nonfatal drowning incident.

Almost one quarter of those children admitted will experience some form of permanent brain damage resulting in lifelong disabilities.

A further 10 children will be presented who do not require further hospitalisation, but had a close call.

The statistics are alarming, so what can we do to make our children safer?

Swim Australia initiated the SwimSAFER program to raise awareness and provide education to caregivers and children alike on how easily children can drown, and what steps can be implemented to make our children SAFER and prevent such tragedies. The SwimSAFER layers of protection – Be Aware, Be Secure, Be Confident, Be Prepared – will be reinforced through a presence at selected Learn To Swim schools, posters, online and social media campaigns, educational materials, CPR buddies, in lesson safety programming and media attention.

While the savagery in Paris has taken centre stage, debate is also raging as to the perception that the Western world cares more for the lives lost in Paris then those lost in equally appalling attacks in Lebanon, Iraq, Kenya and Syria.

identical way of life, ergo these attacks seem more relevant to us. It is not a distinction between “more” or “less” tragic, but rather a reflection of human psychology, that is, it is human nature to react more passionately to what is happening in our own backyard.

The debate also poses an interesting legal question however. What are the Australian

Government’s war powers?

Under the Australian Constitution the Government holds what are known as Prerogative Powers, also known as the power to deploy armed forces, domestically and internationally.

An interesting point to note in relation to Australia’s position is that the Commonwealth Government does not necessarily require Parliament’s approval before it decides to deploy armed forces or “declare war”. The result is that this is usually a decision made by the Prime Minister taken in consideration with the views of the Commanders in Chief of Australia’s military forces.

This is in line with the situation in places like the United Kingdom, however differs to other allied nations such as the USA who typically require the authorisation of Congress in order to “declare war”.

This is a simplistic snapshot of these powers, but are interesting considerations nonetheless.

What will be more interesting is Australia’s response to these terrorist attacks now that for the first time ISIS has brought their murderous fight to Western soil. Whatever Australia’s involvement, what is certain is that these acts of terror are barbaric and must not be allowed to continue.

Turning back Time

Breaking new ground

I

t was once thought unthinkable – the working class suburb of Penrith being represented by the Liberal Party in Federal Parliament.

But in 1996, Jackie Kelly produced one of the most unlikely political victories of all-time, and almost immediately gave the seat of Lindsay ‘bellwether’ status.

Economically sensitive, Lindsay is a seat never taken for granted by either political party, but prior to 1996, most considered it Labor heartland.

Labor’s Ross Free had held Lindsay since its creation in 1984, but times were changing back in 1996 and on the back of John Howard being swept to power as Prime Minister, Lindsay also fell to the Liberals with the little-known Jackie Kelly winning the seat.

Incredibly, Mrs Kelly not only won the seat, but demolished her opponent in Mr Free with a huge swing of 12 per cent.

However, the celebrations were put on hold when a by-election was called soon after the election. It related to citizenship and eligibility questions, but despite Mr Free’s best efforts, the drama worked in Mrs Kelly’s favour. The by-election was held soon after the Howard Government’s first Budget, which was quite warmly received, and the general public feeling

The Liberal vote increased by five per cent.

Very quickly, Jackie Kelly became a star of the Howard Government and one of its most visible members. In 1998, she took on the role as Minister for Sport, a key position given the Sydney Olympics were only two years away. She also became Minister for Tourism.

Despite the odd controversy, Mrs Kelly remained a successful and popular member of Parliament, and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister from 2001 to 2004.

However, by the time 2007 came around, it was clear that things were changing.

Prime Minister Howard’s leadership was looking shaky, and the ‘Kevin 07’ juggernaut was in full swing. Prior to the election, Mrs Kelly made the decision not to

contest Lindsay and to retire from politics.

In the days leading up to the 2007 election, she was involved in a major political scandal that dominated the final moments of the campaign. It related to the discovery of a leaflet from a fake Islamic organisation urging support for Labor. This was being distributed by people involved with the Liberal Party, and the leaflet tried to link Labor to clemency for terrorists and the building of a local mosque.

Any chance the Liberals had of retaining Lindsay in the face of Kevin 07 was gone, and Labor’s David Bradbury ultimately won the seat, defeating Liberal candidate Karen Chijoff.

Jackie Kelly still remains in politics, and recently contested the NSW State Election as an independent. She has abandoned her links with the Liberal Party.

This week, we take you back to May 27, 1960. This photograph was taken the night before Penrith Library relocated from the School of Arts building in Castlereagh Street, to a new location in the old Council chambers on Henry Street. Of course, it has moved since then as well.

Two years ago, The Western Weekender’s front page dropped an incredible bombshell – Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish announced that he wanted to take on sitting Penrith MP Stuart Ayres in a preselection showdown ahead of the next state election. Cr Cornish told the Weekender that he wanted to make the move to State politics and believed he would be the best representative for the Liberal Party in Penrith.

“I feel I can better represent the needs and aspirations of the people of Penrith,” Cr Cornish told the Weekender.

“My key priorities are the roads in Penrith, and whilst I have been actively advocating for better roads at Council, there are many State Government roads that impact on our area.”

Ultimately, Mr Ayres was preselected and won the next State Election for the Liberals.

Also on the front page of the November 22, 2013 edition is a piece that would later have much more relevance – the news that Man Haron Monis has been charged in connection with the murder of Noleen Hayson Pal in Werrington.

Monis would later go on to be the central figure in the Lindt Cafe Siege.

hile UFC fans from all over the world were glued to their TV screens last Sunday watching American Holly Holm knockout superstar Ronda Rousey, one Penrith local was packing her bags ready to do something very similar.

Australia’s number one female mixed martial artist (MMA) and local resident Arlene Blencowe, departed Sydney bound for Oklahoma in the United States on Monday where she’ll go up against American Gabrielle Holloway this Saturday morning at Bellator 146.

Bellator MMA, the second largest MMA promotional company in the world behind the UFC, signed Blencowe late last year to a multi-fight deal.

Speaking with the Weekender before her departure, the 32-year-old opened up on how much her life has changed since signing with the American company.

“Getting signed to Bellator has given me worldwide recognition, awesome exposure and is financially good for my family,” she said.

“Along with my incredible sponsors, it’s probably what’s allowed me to be a fulltime athlete.”

Originally hailing from Port Macquarie, Blencowe moved herself and her two kids

to Penrith earlier this year, so she could be close to her training base, Jabout Gym, in Coombes Drive.

Interestingly, Blencowe started her sporting career at age 26 as an amateur boxer. She turned professional in 2012, then in 2013 was crowned two-time world champion by winning the WBF and WIBA Light Welterweight titles in New Zealand.

“I turned professional in boxing but things were pretty quiet because there weren’t many active girls out there to fight, so I started MMA two years ago and, in my first year, had eight professional fights,” she said.

“At 30, I decided to quit my full-time job as a retail manager because I thought this

was my last chance – I had to make the most of it.”

Even as a professional boxer, Blencowe often fought without pay, prompting her to take on the growing sport of MMA to make a living.

“It’s not like the Pacquiao and Mayweather fights where you’re paid millions. My first few fights in boxing, including my world title fights, I didn’t get paid anything,” she revealed.

“These last 12 months with Bellator have been amazing, this will be the fourth time in a year I’ve been to America to fight.”

A win against Hollaway will move Blencowe’s ranking from number six featherweight fighter in the world to four.

fter the success of the inaugural Penrith event last year, Ironkids will return to the Sydney International Regatta Centre next weekend.

The Ironkids event will be held on Saturday, November 28 and will comprise of a specially designed swim, run and bike leg for competitors aged seven to 13-years-old.

The kids-only event is based on the renowned Ironkids program, which inspires youth through sport and competition to lead active, positive and healthy

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said she was looking forward to welcoming the Ironkids event back to Penrith.

The Ironkids event will be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre next Saturday, November 28. Each competitor will receive a medal and finisher’s shirt.

New recruit set to become a wrecking ball for Panthers NATHAN TAYLOR

ew Penrith Panthers prop Viliame Kikau almost can’t believe how much his life has changed in such a short space of time.

Just under two years ago the now 20-year-old was living in his native Fiji playing centre in a local rugby union competition before the North Queensland Cowboys discovered him, turned him into a prop and a downright wrecking machine.

After enjoying two outstanding seasons with North Queensland’s Holden Cup team – scoring 32 tries in 42 games – Kikau decided to take his monster talent elsewhere, signing with the Panthers on a two year deal.

“This is only my second year in Australia, it’s a huge culture shock, I go through difficulties every single day but I take it as a challenge and just get on with it,” Kikau told the Weekender.

“I played rugby union my whole life before the Cowboys scouted me from Fiji. It was a good opportunity for me to develop my skills and I’ve learnt a lot.”

Currently sidelined recovering from recent ankle surgery, Kikau is looking forward to returning to training.

“It’s hard at the moment, I’d rather be outside passing the ball around with the boys but I can’t do that much,” he said.

“I got my injury over a month ago; it was syndesmosis in my ankle. In another six weeks they’ll remove the screw and I’ll be back running again.”

Weighing in at 119kg and standing nearly two metres tall, Kikau was one of the most highly sought-after young forwards on the market, garnering plenty of attention from rival clubs before Panthers boss Phil Gould came calling.

“Deciding my future was a hard decision to make, the Cowboys offered me a contract as did some other clubs, but when Penrith came up, it grabbed my attention,” Kikau revealed.

“During a day off in Townsville, Gus paid for my flight to come down. He took me around the club to have a look and introduced me to all the staff.”

Poised to make his NRL debut in 2016, the reigning Holden Cup Prop of the Year said he’ll be working hard to achieve that goal and make a name for himself in the top grade.

“We’ve got heaps of front rowers at the club and I’m going to try and fight hard for a position in the team,” Kikau said.

“If I get a run next year, I’ll do my best and make all the fans proud.”

estern Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic has labelled last Friday’s 3-0 win over Melbourne City as the best he’s seen this season.

With the scores locked at 0-0 at halftime, the Wanderers came bursting out of the gate in the second half with boom striker Mitch Nichols opening the scoring in the 47th minute.

Moments later Italian marquee Federico Piovaccari ended his scoring drought since joining the club with a 61st minute goal shrouded in controversy, while Mark Bridge’s 50th A-League goal came fairly easily in the 84th minute.

Speaking after the match, Popovic said it was pleasing to see his relatively new side light up the scoreboard in a big way.

“So far, six games in, it was the best performance we’ve had,” he said.

“We certainly showed glimpses throughout the first five games but today was a more complete performance.”

The 3-0 hammering was Western Sydney’s third straight win, and the second in a row away from home.

you do it or how you do it is always a very good achievement,” Popovic said.

“We have to acknowledge that’s two consecutive away wins as well, it’s not an easy thing to do and I envisage us getting even better.”

The Wanderers now sit in fourth place on the A-League ladder as they prepare for this Saturday’s match against the Wellington Phoenix at Pirtek Stadium.

Wanderers goalkeeper and Emu Plains local Andrew Redmayne said the team was full of confidence heading into this weekend.

“The confidence is pretty high with three wins in a row, but there’s another new challenge this week and we’ve got to put in a solid week on the track and not take anything for granted,” he said.

“The side put in a lot of effort during the pre-season and I think that’s really starting to come through now.”

The Wanderers currently have the equal second best defence in the league, and that can largely be put down to 26-yearold Redmayne, who arrived at the club this season from Melbourne City.

“I’m loving western Sydney, I’m loving the club in general and the fans are fantastic, so I couldn’t be happier with where I am at the moment,” Redmayne said.

Mr Ayres said there’s expected to be a quality field of competitors at the Penrith event.

“The elevation of this event to be the Asia-Pacific Championships in 2017 is expected to attract more international participants and increase the profile of western Sydney in the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.

The Ironman 70.3 is a triathlon race comprising of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run covering a total of 113km – or 70.3 miles.

As a result of the substantial growth of triathlon and the Ironman brand in the southern hemisphere, Ironman began an annual rotation of the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championships throughout the Asia-Pacific region starting with the Ironman 70.3 Philippines, Cebu in 2016.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith and Bankstown have played out a draw in their Round 6 First Grade match at Howell Oval.

After bad weather totally washed out Day 1 the week prior, the wet conditions returned last Saturday for Day 2 of action.

Bankstown went into bat first but, after just nine overs, the game was called off with the visitors at 1/24.

Penrith’s only wicket came via Chris Withers who was 1/13.

The game was deemed a draw with both sides sharing the points.

This Saturday the eighth-placed Penrith will return to Howell Oval where they’ll take on the competition-leading Sydney Uni from 10.30am.

BASEBALL: More weekend rain has affected the NSW State Baseball League with Penrith’s Round 9 match against the Ryde Hawks officially washed out.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers W-League team have stormed into the top four on the back of their first home win in almost two years.

The 693-day drought was finally broken as Michelle Carney and Keelin Winters both scored in a 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory at Marconi Stadium last Sunday.

It was Western Sydney’s second win in a row and their first ever against Melbourne Victory with the Wanderers dominant from the start.

enrith will be home to another major sporting event in 2017 with the announcement that, for the first time in Australia, the Ironman 70.3 AsiaPacific Championships will be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Speaking at the historic announcement on Monday afternoon, Penrith MP and Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres, said the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championships will attract the best triathletes from around Australia and the Asia-Pacific region to Penrith.

“The NSW Government is committed to bringing a diverse range of events to western Sydney and I am delighted to announce that this major sporting event has been secured by our State’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW,” Mr Ayres said.

“The Sydney International Regatta Centre hosted the Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney in November last year, which attracted close to 1300 visitors from interstate and overseas to the region, with a total visitor spend of more than $1.7 million.”
