ang-rape victim Katrina Keshishian has vowed to continue to fight for the rights of victims of violent crimes after presenting a petition to Attorney General Brad Hazzard to have victims’ compensation for violent crimes increased.

As reported in the Weekender last week, Ms Keshishian was horrifically gang-raped after a night out in St Marys in 2008.

The issue of victims’ compensation is something that is close to the Penrith resident’s heart.

After having her own claim approved this year and finding that it was not nearly as much as she was expecting, she became determined to make a change.

Ms Keshishian met with Mr Hazzard and NSW Premier, Mike Baird late last week to present them with the 120,000-strong petition and to give a voice to the state’s victims of violent crime.

“The meeting went well. I told them my story and explained how an act of violence has affected my life these past six years. They listened, they cared but they made no commitment, no guarantee that they were going to do anything,” she said.

Ms Keshishian added that the Premier and Attorney General told her that they would be unable to make any legislation changes until after the State Election in March next year.

“I did some research and know that they can call parliament back but it is just a matter of whether the victims of serious crime are a priority to them or not,” she said.

Power price hike warning State Opposition wants referendum on electricity privatisation TROY DODDS

ocals will face higher power bills if electricity is privatised, the State Opposition has warned.

Shadow Energy Minister, Adam Searle joined Labor candidates for Penrith and Londonderry Emma Husar and Prue Car on Monday to call for a referendum on the privatisation of the electricity sector.

“There are many questions that need answers about the impact this privatisation will have on family energy bills, reliability of the network and the cost to the NSW Budget,” Ms Car said.

“We need to know the detail of this and the community has a right to know what the details are.”

Mr Searle said the impact of any electricity privatisation on both the State Budget and the cost of living for local residents needed to be thoroughly investigated.

“The primary concern is that the limited details released by the government about this proposed transaction do not add up,” Mr Searle said.

“We believe that all the cards need to be on the table before the community can make any kind of an informed decision, and we believe that once all the facts are known the community will say no to this.”

He said it was important that the issue was more than just a State election topic.

“They should not be sold in a fire sale – any transaction must be properly scrutinised and that’s why we believe it should be done by direct vote of the people, not lost in the hurly burly of a state election campaign,” he said.

While power price increases would be devastating for locals, a recent Frontier Economics report into the regulation of electricity network pricing shows privatisation doesn’t mean people will pay more.

The report showed that pricing has been comparable or better, in jurisdictions in which network businesses are privately owned.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said Labor had “zero credibility” on electricity prices.

“Under the reforms introduced by the Liberal Government electricity prices have risen, on average, at or below CPI. Leasing the electricity will put further downward pressure on prices by lowering network costs and unlock funds for new public assets,” Mr Ayres said.

“Labor’s call for a constitutional change smells like utter desperation and shows they have no plan for investing in crucially needed roads, rail, health and education infrastructure.”

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull this week confirmed that the ABC would face cuts to its annual funding, in the vicinity of around five per cent.

There’s a few points to this argument worth considering and I don’t believe that the issue is totally clean cut either way.

The Government-bashers, who just love to complain no matter what the issue, would argue that the ABC should be immune from such cuts, given the service it provides to the nation.

Some of those perennial bashers have also seized upon the cuts as being a broken election promise, which is probably fair enough – Tony Abbott stood in Penrith the night before the election and clearly stated there would be no cuts to the ABC. Twist it all you like, there can be no denying what message that the voting public took out of that commitment.

The news this week about the cuts has also prompted the old discussion about whether the Government should fund the ABC at all, given how different the media landscape is now compared to when the service first launched in the mid-1950s.

Even before starting this column, I wasn’t overly convinced either way about just how important the ABC is to the landscape of the country.

But before writing my first word, I saw a tweet pop up from the News Limited-owned Herald Sun newspaper.

“Kim Kardashian lands in Melbourne,” it read, linking to a story about this ‘developing’ news.

We’ve all heard stories about just how many cuts have been made to commercial newsrooms across the country.

The result is not just a “trimming of fat” as some would call it, but a poorer news service.

When you start cutting, where do you stop?

the best journalism they’ve ever done is living in another world.

Stories about Kim Kardashian’s plane landing, or the latest ‘Big Brother’ evictee are not just there to attract the lowest common denominator of news consumers, they’re there because it’s damn easy to write.

Journalists in 2014 are under more pressure than ever before – the digital age means that news organisations demand more news, not less, from their journalists.

Problem is, cuts across the media spectrum mean there’s less journalists to do more work.

While there’s most probably fat to trim at the ABC, at what cost?

And when you start cutting, where do you stop?

The ABC may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there can be no denying the quality programs it presents particularly in a news sphere via telecasts such as ‘7.30’, ‘Four Corners’ and ‘Australian Story’.

Commercial television networks now seem to run on a totally different news radar to what they have traditionally produced. These days it’s about cheap unnecessary live crosses, celebritybased stories and blanket coverage of events that traditionally didn’t deserve such attention.

Again, they do it because it’s easy. It’s a much simpler task to report on something that is happening, rather than investigate why and how it happened.

The commercial sphere’s current poor position in producing quality news and journalism (with a few exceptions) means the ABC is more vital than ever.

However, all of us must take a hit when it comes to measures to get the Budget and economy under control, including the ABC. So yes, go ahead, cut the five per cent, but we must monitor this thoroughly to ensure it’s not the start of the long-term demolition of the ABC.

“In one of the homes a nurse who works the night shift was in bed asleep. We [residents] had difficulty waking her to make sure that she got out safely in case the fire was to spread.”

Mr Sheldon said the quick response from fire crews prevented the situation from being worse.

“The fire appears to have started at the rear of the home and quickly spread to the second floor. Prompt arrival and action by the fire crews avoided a more serious outcome,” he said.

A

two storey home in Ropes Crossing has been gutted after fire ripped through the property this week.

Just before 12.45pm on Tuesday, November 18, fire crews were called to the home on Taradale Drive, Ropes Crossing with reports that a house was on fire.

“Crews arrived shortly after the fire had started to find the house well alight and they immediately got to work. The fire was on the lower level of the two storey house,” said a representative of NSW Fire and Rescue.

There were five Fire and Rescue trucks on the scene as well as one crew from the Rural Fire Service.

Fire crews searched the property but there was no one inside the home at the time.

“Crews managed to extinguish the fire after about an hour. The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” the spokesperson said.

Residents at the scene commented that the fire created a lot of thick smoke, so they took it upon themselves to evacuate their neighbours and other residents before fire crews arrived.

Great Western Highway upgrade Temporary Highway closure at Bullaburra Saturday 13 December 2014 The NSW Government has funded the widening of the Great Western Highway between Emu Plains and Katoomba in stages to a four lane divided highway.

As part of this upgrade, Roads and Maritime Services is constructing a new pedestrian bridge across the highway from near Cooranga Street to the access bridge for Bullaburra Railway Station.

Work to install the new bridge will be carried out during the night from 8pm Saturday 13 December until 5am Sunday 14 December, weather permitting.

To ensure the safety of our staff, contractors and the community, the highway will be closed to all traffic between 10pm and 4am.

Detours will be in place between Wentworth Falls and Lawson for light vehicles, and between Mount Victoria and Orchard Hills for heavy vehicles. Access will be maintained for local residents and will be managed by traffic controllers.

A change in NSW Government legislation in 2013 saw the introduction of a new Victims Support Scheme, which Ms Keshishian said meant that the maximum compensation was reduced from $50,000 to $15,000.

The Attorney General said that the new scheme is more responsive to the needs of victims than the old, as it addresses the ongoing psychological and physical trauma they suffer by providing ongoing support services and counselling as well as making a financial contribution in recognition of their suffering.

“The new scheme, which began in June 2013, focuses on providing victims with comprehensive tailored support rather than one-off lump sum payments,” Mr Hazzard said.

“It aims to provide a swift and compassionate response. Today, financial payments are made within an average of 31 working days, compared to 32 months under the old scheme.”

Ms Keshishian believes that the new scheme is “unfair” to the victims of violent crime, who she says are not getting the compensation that they deserve after traumatic experiences.

“I really do hope that they do something because it is not just about me anymore; it is about the 24,000 other victims who are in the same boat,” she said.

hat leftover mince and those bread crusts that you threw out after dinner last night make up part of the millions of dollars worth of usable food that Penrith’s families toss out every year.

In a bid to reduce the food wastage that local residents produce, Penrith Council’s Health Strategy Officer Monique Desmarchelier treated Jordan Springs residents to a live cooking demonstration on Tuesday, where she showed them how to use their leftovers and gave tips and advice on preventing food waste.

She said it was an important issue that needed to be discussed.

“In NSW [each household] wastes just over $1000 a year. NSW sits in the middle – some states waste more and some waste less,” Ms Desmarchelier said.

She said that reducing food wastage, which can save families a lot of money, is as simple as planning a weekly menu, having a look in the fridge and cupboards before heading out to the shops and using leftovers.

Local residents were also taught how to create healthy dinners using simple ingredients.

Police snapshot St Marys: Man threatens police with knife

Police investigate break and enter incidents

A man is before the courts after he allegedly threatened police with a knife when they were responding to reports of a domestic dispute at St Marys last week.

Police were called to a house on Camira Street at about 3.30pm on Wednesday, November 12. There, they allege that inside the home, a 37-year-old woman had been involved in an argument with a 36-year-old man before she jumped out of a bedroom window. Police entered the home and walked to one of the bedrooms when they were allegedly confronted by a man, who was armed with a knife. Police were forced to draw their firearms as the man allegedly advanced toward them, refusing to drop the weapon. The man eventually dropped the knife and was arrested by police.

Police are investigating two separate break and enter incidents that both occurred at similar times on Monday, November 17. In the first, an unknown man entered a house on Sheredan Road, Castlereagh, at about 12.50pm, where a woman was at home. The 50-year-old resident saw the man and confronted him before he left the house, getting into a car and speeding away. In a similar incident that same day, two unknown men entered a semi-rural property on Londonderry Road, Londonderry at about 1pm. The 63-year-old man who was home at the time confronted the intruders, who detained him and demanded property. Penrith police officers are appealing for information about both incidents.

North St Marys: Man injured in stabbing incident

Oxley Park: Ammunition and firearms stolen

Police are yet to lay charges over the stabbing of a man that occurred in North St Marys last week. Police were called to a house on Tobruk Street at about 9.15pm on Wednesday, November 12, where they found a man suffering stab wounds. It’s believed the 28-year-old man was involved in an argument with a woman at the house, when he was stabbed once in the chest. Officers from St Marys Local Area Command are investigating the incident. Not long into their investigations, police arrested a 20-year-old woman however she was released without charge pending further investigations.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers or St Marys Police.

Ammunition and firearms have been stolen from an Oxley Park home. Between 12.30pm on Thursday, November 13 and 1.30pm on Monday, November 17, police believe that a person or a number of people broke into a shed on the Melbourne Street property while the residents were not home.

They forced entry into several other sheds on the property and appear to have stolen a Hammerli .177 air rifle, a Wetherby .223 calibre rifle and ammunition, as well as hand tools and a mountain bike. Police from St Marys Local Area Command were called to the property on Monday, November 17. They have commenced investigations and are calling for public assistance.

illions of dollars in Federal Government funding has been awarded to University of Western Sydney (UWS) research projects, which upon completion will help the Government and other organisations make educated decisions on a range of important topics.

Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, said that 10 new research projects would benefit from $3,152,695 in funding delivered by the Australian Research Council’s 2015 Major Grants.

“This announcement is great news for western Sydney as the funding will enable some of Australia’s best researchers to make exciting and important discoveries that will deliver benefits for all Australians and to the world,” she said.

Of the total funding, almost $1.5 million was divided between four researchers at UWS under the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme.

“These four new DECRA fellowships worth $1.44 million reflect the hard work and dedication of our early career researchers,” said UWS Deputy ViceChancellor (Research and Development), Professor Scott Holmes.

t may have taken two years but the invasive and fast-growing weed, kudzu has finally been eradicated from a site alongside Boundary Creek at Penrith. $70,000 in funding from a number of sources, including the NSW Government’s Weeds Action Program, saw environmental contractors Total Earth Care take on a project to remove the weed.

It was announced last week that the project is finally complete.

“Kudzu is one of the world’s worst weeds because it can grow up to 30cm per day and has the ability to completely smother houses, buildings as well as all other vegetation,” said Hawkesbury River County Council (HRCC) General Manager, Chris Dewhurst.

“Kudzu has been present at Boundary Creek, Penrith, between Castlereagh Rd and the Nepean River, for more than 10 years. Unless controlled it has the potential to spread into the main river and establish in other areas.”

An upstream sewage treatment plant and severe bank instability created hurdles for the Total Earth Care team, who not only have succeeded in removing the weed, but have replaced it with more environmentally-friendly options.

Chris Dewhurst and Marcelo Habibeh “Controlling the weed required a combination of herbicide applications and physical removal. We have also re-vegetated the site with native plants and undertaken additional works to stabilise the banks,” Total Earth Care Director Andrew McGahey said.

Mr Dewhurst said that the site and other sites downstream in the Nepean River will continue to be monitored.

“Any new plants or new growth must be immediately controlled to ensure this weed does not re-establish or spread to other areas,” he said.

Nepean River Green Bridge Geotechnical investigations at Nepean River, Penrith from Monday 1 December CAP Funding

Roads and Maritime Services will carry out geotechnical investigations to further inform the design for the Nepean River Green Bridge project.

Children, seniors, refugees and people with disability will benefit from numerous local projects funded by the 2014-2015 Community Assistance Program (CAP). Each year Council provides funding for local non-profit organisations and groups to assist in the provision of services and facilities that will benefit the Penrith community.

A significant number of the groups that apply are made up entirely from volunteers and receive no other government funding.

Council contributed close to $40,000 to local community groups at a special presentation last week, which is now in its 20th year. This latest round of grants will fund 47 separate projects across the City including: • Community Christmas events at Cambridge Park and St Clair • New play equipment for Nepean Giggles Playgroup

This work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm from Monday 1 December to Friday 19 December, weather permitting.

No work will be carried out on Saturday 13 December due to a rowing regatta event.

Roads and Maritime contractors will use a truck-mounted drill rig to drill three boreholes on the western side and three boreholes on the eastern side of the river. In addition to this work, one test pit will also be excavated on the western side of the river. Additional boreholes will be drilled in the river bed using a truck-mounted drill rig on a barge.

Pedestrian access will be maintained while drilling work is carried out along The Great River Walk on the eastern side of the river.

There may be some noise associated with this work but every effort will be made to minimise the impact on residents and businesses.

Council facing multiple childcare challenges CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

he Chair of Penrith City Children’s Services says that Council’s network of childcare centres has been performing well over the past year despite facing challenging times.

Addressing Council last week, Chairperson Max Friend said that funding from the Federal Government remains unclear.

“We have urged the Federal Government not to mess with the National Quality Framework. There has also been uncertainty with funding agreements however, $405 million has now been committed to maintain funding for the next year so that parents will have access to 15 hours of preschool for their children,” he said.

“There will be no cuts for preschools next year but long term funding depends on the results of the review into early childhood education, the results of which are due this month.”

Mr Friend also indicated that some of Council’s children’s services were not meeting utilisation targets as parents struggle to afford childcare.

“This was particularly significant in the second half of the financial year (2013-14), especially in long day care. Increasingly, parents were reporting loss of jobs, redundancies, reduced work hours and

businesses going out of business as major factors in their ability to afford childcare,” he said in his annual report.

“The Board is under no illusion that the year ahead will hold many challenges in its quest to ensure the children’s services remain viable within a climate of increased competition, legislation and regulation requirements and the challenge to maintain a skilled workforce.”

Nonetheless, parent surveys revealed that they are very happy with the quality of staff, and when independently assessed against the National Quality Standard, 85 per cent of centres have been meeting or exceeding the standard.

Londonderry residents watch in amazement as RAAF practices airdrops

ondonderry has been a hive of activity in the last week with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) practicing a series of airdrops over the local defence land.

Between Monday, November 10 and Saturday, November 15, a number of trial drops were conducted from C-130J Hercules planes.

The trials involve the airdrop of platforms and Container Delivery System loads, and are intended to increase the number of airdrop roles which can be performed by RAAF C-130J Hercules on operations.

One of the more complicated drops was to deliver in one piece a John Deere light tracked bulldozer.

It required much preparation by the members of the Air Movements Training and Development Unit but the bulldozer was successfully delivered.

The delivery of smaller packages was also trialled, creating an exciting display of parachutes over Londonderry.

The RAAF operates the Hercules C-130J transport aircraft from No 37 Squadron, based at RAAF Base Richmond. It is capable of carrying approximately 120 passengers or seven pallets of cargo.

Local children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) enjoyed some time out on a weekend away at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s (NBMLHD) third ‘Camp Create’ recently.

Camp Create, born out of a collaboration between NBMLHD Child and Youth Mental Health Service COPMI Coordinators and local drug and alcohol resource centre Substance.Org, provides an opportunity for COPMI children to learn about mental illness and coping strategies.

Attendees also take part in a variety of confidence-building activities including obstacle courses, tree-top rope courses, canoeing and art classes.

The first stage of the development includes a 600m pro-circuit and a 200m track for junior racers aged 8-14.

State of the art timing systems, track safety and lighting systems have been installed and special designed go-karts imported from Germany will be driven on the tracks.

A high-tech visitor centre has also been built on site, which includes a cafe and lounge area where family, friends and colleagues can watch each other race on large screens. The visitor centre also has a large function room which is available to hire for parties and conferences.

There are also plans to finalise construction of stages two and three of the development next year.

Council questions new planning changes

T

he number of parking spaces provided in apartment blocks in Penrith could be drastically reduced if proposed changes to planning controls are given the green light by the State Government.

The NSW Government has released a number of draft changes to the rules guiding the construction of apartment buildings and Penrith Council has expressed concerns that not enough parking will be provided by developers if the changes go ahead.

In a report to Councillors last week, Penrith Council’s planning staff expressed concern over the parking provisions. “Generally, the proposed changes are welcome in that they offer increased useability and interpretation of controls for residential flat development,� the report said. “The single exception to this is the proposed changes to car parking space requirements. “Under the draft amendments... the majority of residential flat developments in locations within 800m of a train station will be assessed under the RMS ‘Guide to Traffic Generating Development Guidelines’. These requirements are much lower than our [Penrith Council] requirements.�

Penrith Council will put in a submission to the State Government arguing that the RMS guidelines are out of date and have a number of technical problems.

There is a huge push in the Sydney CBD and some other areas for a reduction in car space requirements for apartment blocks, particularly given the number of people who use public transport in such areas.

Penrith hosts aged care experts Penrith was host to some of the country’s leading aged care experts this week, when they visited the area for the second Nepean Consensus on Osteoporosis.

They came together, meeting at Sydney Medical School, Nepean, to discuss new research into osteoporosis, as well as advances in treatment options.

Attending the conference were a variety of geriatricians, rehabilitation specialists and general practitioners with information and advice on the latest in osteoporosis research.

Professor Gustavo Duque, Director of the Musculoskeletal Ageing Research Program at Sydney Medical School, Nepean, convened this consensus and also convened the first, which took place in 2009.

“Osteoporosis affects an estimated 300 million people worldwide, with one in three women and one in five men over 50 expected to experience an osteoporotic fracture during their life. With our ageing local population this is an important issue that needs to be addressed,” Professor Duque said.

Some of the topics discussed at the consensus included fracture risk assessment, the use of anti-resorptives, the use of bone anabolics, the use of vitamin D and calcium and falls prevention, all in long-term care patients.

As the temperature in the local area rises, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses for its local residents; a risk that to be avoided, requires local residents to take necessary precautions.

and keeping cool by staying in an air conditioned building or drawing the blinds and curtains, are simple ways that local people can protect themselves from the heat.

Dr Bradley Forssman, Director of Public Health, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, said that while taking personal precautions during predicted high-temperature days is important, taking care of other people who are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses is just as vital.

“The elderly, babies and young children, pregnant women, overweight or obese people, people with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes

or kidney disease, and people with or recovering from an acute illness with fever or gastroenteritis are particularly vulnerable,” he said.

Dr Forssman said that it is important for local people to seek medical attention as soon as they feel unwell because of the heat.

“Symptoms can range from irritability, thirst and dizziness during mild to moderate dehydration through to rapid pulse, rapid shallow breathing and loss of consciousness or seizures during heat stroke,” he said.

Temperatures in Penrith are expected to hit 39 degrees today (Friday), 35 degrees on Saturday and 38 on Sunday.

As part of a thorough review of the services it provides, Penrith Council is asking locals to register to provide feedback in early 2015 regarding the level and quality of service Council provides.

The community consultation is part of an organisation-wide Capacity Review, which will look into Council’s assets, priorities, services and finances.

“This review is about future-proofing Council,” Cr Fowler said.

“It will help us meet future demands and focus our resources to achieve the best outcomes for our community.

It’s important we remain sustainable as Penrith’s population grows and demands on our limited resources increase. Including our residents and ratepayers in that process is vital.”

Cr Fowler insists this process is not about cutting services, but about improving their delivery as well as helping Council meet the State Government’s ‘Fit for the Future’ reform agenda criteria.

The NSW Office of Local Government recently announced its agenda, requesting Councils prove their longterm sustainability, effective service delivery and asset management.

“We are confident Council will meet the Scale and Capacity requirement of the agenda,” Cr Fowler said.

Presents will be collected and then delivered to patients at Sydney Chil-

ingswood South Public School is celebrating their 50th anniversary this week with several special events planned to commemorate the major milestone.

On Wednesday the school held a 50th anniversary assembly which included the unveiling of a 50th anniversary plaque from the Department of Education and a new anniversary garden with commemorative pavers bought by parents.

Students and teachers were given anniversary medals, which were donated by the P&C plus a 25-year-old time capsule was opened and added to for future generations.

“To now have a look back at our history is really important for the kids and it’s important for us as a school,” Principal Sandra Martin said.

Special guests at the assembly included the Director of Schools Penrith, Deborah Summerhayes and Principal of Kingswood High School, Rod Nesbitt.

It’s not just about the past though, the school is also focused on preparing for the future by asking for feedback from parents on the direction they wish to see Kingswood South Public School take.

The school will also hold a competition for current students to see what they think

n one special day in October, members of Penrith Kennel and Obedience Club stepped out to walk their dogs as they would on any regular day, but this time it was with an extra spring in their steps, knowing that this walk would make a difference in the lives of many.

Last month’s ‘Dogathon’ saw a large group of handlers and their dogs walk around Werrington Lakes together in a bid to raise funds for the Nepean Cancer Care Centre.

On Tuesday the club visited the centre, donating $1,600.

“It is nice to be able to do something for the community that we are all a part of,” said Club Vice President, Virginia Van Es. “The club knows a lot of people who are cancer survivors or who have passed away, so it is important to us to support the work of the staff at the Centre here.”

The money will go toward patient care and comfort.

“Patient comfort is really important because some patients are spending a lot of time here having chemotherapy and radiotherapy,” said Kerrie Lang, Nepean Cancer Care Centre Nurse Unit Manager.

A special plaque was unveiled this week the school and education in general will be like in 50 years time.

“It’s getting kids to understand that relevance of history and time and future,” Ms Martin said.

Anniversary celebrations will also include a School Fete on Saturday, November 22, which will be opened by State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres.

A dinner at Penrith RSL on Saturday, November 29 is also planned.

Computer warning

Police are cautioning the public after a local man had his computer hacked early this week.

The man was using his computer at about 9am on Monday, November 17 when he was subjected to a cyber attack.

Police believe that the man’s computer was taken control of by an unknown person or group.

The man was told to transfer money into an unknown account if he wanted to re-gain control of his computer.

Penrith Police Crime Manager, Grant Healey, urged locals to be aware.

“If using a computer, make sure your virus and security software is up to date and be careful of websites you visit,” he said.

Woman busted A woman has been charged after allegedly stealing from a number of local shops.

Between 9am and 2.30pm on Friday, November 14, police allege that a 37-yearold woman from Dharruk visited a number of stores in the Penrith area, stealing from a number of them.

She was stopped by store security at a local clothing store, where she was searched.

Police were called to the scene and allege that she had stolen from three stores.

She was charged with ‘stealing’ and ‘goods in custody’.

The woman will appear in Penrith Local Court at a later date to answer to both charges.

Boosting vital skills Daycare staff across Lindsay to receive new training

A

total of 56 long daycare providers will receive financial assistance to train and upskill their staff.

Fiona Scott, Member for Lindsay, announced long day care educators across Penrith would benefit from the Federal Government’s investment in professional development with over $2 million in funding to be delivered through a new program.

“The Abbott Government’s Long Day Care Professional Development Program will directly support 56 long daycare services in Lindsay to help with the cost of training and upskilling their educators,” Ms Scott said.

“I’m delighted our local childcare operators have embraced this program, which was set up to ensure a fairer go as the previous Labor ‘lack of initiative’ would have seen upward of 70 per cent of long day care educators miss out.”

Ms Scott said it was about ensuring the best quality education was delivered to young minds.

“We want to help as many long daycare services as possible deliver high-quality education and care for local families by ensuring they can afford to train and educate staff to meet the new national child care standards,” she said.

ans of the hit TV shows ‘Fat Pizza’ and ‘Housos’ were given the chance to get up close and personal with some of their favourite cast members at the Fat Pizza party at Eagle Boys Penrith on Monday.

Pauly, played by Paul Fenech, Habib played by Tahir Bilgic and Shazza, played

by Elle Dawe greeted fans as they enjoyed free pizzas for the first 200 visitors, free film merchandise, buy one get one free movie ticket offers, a pizza eating competition and plenty of laughs.

Penrith was chosen as the only Sydney location for the party which was hosted in celebration of the release of the new movie ‘Fat Pizza vs Housos’ which will be in cinemas on Thursday, November 27.

“It’s the funniest most spectacular bogan Ben Hur bonanza with subwoofers that’s ever been made in Australia. It’s very funny and if you don’t see it you’re a stooge,” Paul Fenech said.

The creator and star of ‘Fat Pizza’ and ‘Housos’ admits that Penrith and the broader western Sydney area have had a huge influence on the shows.

“Most of our humour kind of came from Sydney’s west, even though it seems to be

when I’m out and about doing things like this is really cool,” she said.

For Year 7 Visual Arts students at Kemps Creek’s Emmaus Catholic College, the works they observed recently were quite different to traditional art exhibits.

“We went to ‘Sculptures by the Sea’ at the beach,” said Year 7 student, Jade Trenfield.

“It was unusual because the sculptures are made of all sorts of materials, not just stone or marble.”

The location for the display at Bondi Beach provides a spectacular background for the artists’ works, but also presents some challenges.

Jade commented that “the pieces have to be strong because of the exposed position, wind, sea spray and storm, so there has to be more skill than just imagining and creating a sculpture”.

Artists use all types of materials including recycled goods, items from garage sales and street collections, metals, plastics and even bottle caps.

Large numbers of people visit the annual exhibition with artists from many regions participating.

Blackheath sculptor Clara Hali’s abstract bronze woman is displayed in a prime location.

Although the day was hot, the Year 7 Emmaus students found the variety of subjects and materials used made the excursion worthwhile and relevant to their classroom studies.

“It was helpful to find plenty of signs giving information about the pieces,” Jade said.

Balance: is it mythical or achievable?

Working from home is a delicate balance

Elizabeth Gilbert (author of the book Eat, Pray, Love) recently posted an article on her blog, saying “I feel and fear that the lovely word ‘balance’ has accidentally become yet another weapon in the arsenal that we use against ourselves – yet another piece of evidence that WE ARE NOT DOING IT RIGHT”.

And she is right: most of the time when we are talking about ‘balance’ it is bemoaning the fact that we feel like we are not achieving it. We are behind in our work or not spending enough time with kids, partners or friends, or not getting enough sleep… and the list goes on. And to top it off, we often look at other people who seem to have it all together and compare ourselves negatively to them.

But what would ‘balance’ actually look like? When I stopped to think about that, I imagined that it might be quite boring!

Because it would mean there would likely be no surprises, no unexpected events, and a fairly rigid existence. And from a business perspective, I imagine it would mean that opportunities would be unlikely to come my way because I would be safe and secure in my bubble

of balance and not notice them. More importantly, we have to stop comparing ourselves to others.

We all have different tolerances, stress triggers, time pressures, family circumstances and so on. It’s like comparing the proverbial apple to an orange.

Ultimately, the ‘balance’ you should be aiming for is to keep perspective about what you will be most proud of when business is no longer a factor. Will it be about how much time you spent making a profit or how much time you spent doing other stuff that matters to you?

Set up a separate work area: Make sure you have a separate room or enclosed area where you can work. If possible, invest in a separate telephone line for the business. This separation will help you treat it as a place of focus and concentration.

Get motivated: Running a successful home business requires self-discipline, especially if you are a sole trader.

Without the social interaction and motivation that occurs in a corporate office, you may feel a lack of focus. One strategy to keep you motivated is to set small hourly goals.

For example, your goal for 10am to 11am may be to call 10 potential clients, while 3.30pm to 4.30pm is set aside for writing your weekly column.

There will of course be stretches of intense work that dominate everything else for days, weeks, or even months.

Communicating clearly when these stretches will happen is critical. Knowing for yourself and sharing a commitment with your family that your relationship is a high priority is important.

Kumho Tyre has re-affirmed its commitment to the environment by re-signing with carbon offsetting organisation Greenfleet, which will continue the program that sees a native tree planted on behalf of Kumho for every Ecowing tyre sold in Australia.

In just three years, the Kumho Tyre commitment to carbon offsetting has seen 12,500 trees planted in Australian native forests.

The Ecowing range has proven to be environmentally friendly due to its fuel saving properties, low rolling resistance and use of an environmentally friendly compound rather than a petroleum-based one.

According to Harry Cho, managing director of Kumho Tyre Australia, the relationship between Kumho and Greenfleet underscores Kumho’s ongoing commitment to the environment.

“Kumho aims to be socially responsible and as part of that we aim to limit the impact we have on the environment,” he said.

“Our involvement with Greenfleet has been highly successful and we want to continue to give something back to the environment and offset the impact tyres have on it.”

Greenfleet has planted more than 8.5 million native trees around Australia since 1997 in its aim to offset carbon emissions.

Greenfleet will continue to plant more native trees in the coming year.

ocal rugby union coach Sila Tuangakava has been named the 2014 Asteron Life Community Coach of the Year.

Tuangakava is one of 18,000 coaches across Australia who selflessly gives up their time to develop the next wave of rugby talent in their community.

As a proud Tongan-Australian, and passionate supporter of rugby, Tuangakava proved himself a source of guidance to hundreds of young men playing the game in western Sydney.

This year alone, Tuangakava coached the Western Raptors U12s side, Penrith 1st Colts Team and led the Penrith District Junior Rugby Union U12s representative side to a State Championship.

Tuangakava has worked with disadvantaged youths in the area and was also vice president of the Western Raptors Junior Rugby Union club.

In 2014, Asteron Life, naming rights partner of Super Rugby in Australia, teamed up with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) to recognise coaches that have given incredible service to the game.

“Grassroots rugby is all about the community so it’s great to see Asteron Life working with the ARU to create a national program that highlights the tremendous contribution of coaches.”

The supporting program also included the Presidents Cup. The Lexus PJ Hall Memorial was a thriller with three horses flashing over the line with only a short half head and one metre between them. Chamberlin crowned champ sport

ulgoa resident Darren Chamberlin has put a near disaster behind him to take out the Aussie Racing Cars Super Series for the very first time.

Leading the championship heading into last weekend’s race at Victoria’s Phillip Island, Chamberlin needed an overall round finish of eighth or better to take out his maiden title but an accident in the third race almost cost him glory.

After finishing seventh in the first race and sixth in the second, Chamberlin was well on track to finish where he needed to be – that was until race three rolled around.

“I started the race in sixth and the car was absolutely flying. I made my way to second and was sitting comfortably,” Chamberlin recalled.

“But with a lap and a half to go I got t-boned and then was taken out at the next corner. I ended up sideways and stopped at the side of the track.

“I managed to get going again and finished the race.”

Darren Chamberlin celebrates his victory in the Aussie Racing Cars Super Series Chamberlin said his car didn’t suffer too much damage in the two collisions, and was able to start in the all-important fourth and final race of the weekend.

“I was really lucky… it could’ve been a whole lot worse,” he admitted.

“If I hadn’t finished the third race, I probably could’ve recovered, but the last race

was worth double points and if I didn’t finish that race I would’ve lost it all.”

Chamberlin finished the final race in sixth position and was deemed fifth overall for the entire round.

After seven years battling away, Chamberlin was finally crowned champion of Aussie Racing Cars.

“If someone told me seven years ago that we were going to win a championship, I would’ve ran away laughing,” he said.

“I never thought we’d be in a position to win it let alone actually do it.

“We’ve now got to get ready for next year and try and defend it.”

The Aussie Racing Cars Super Series is a competition that gives amateur drivers of all ages and experience the opportunity to compete. It often acts as a curtain raiser to the more popular V8 Supercar Series.

Vehicles competing in Aussie Racing Cars are 100 per cent mechanically identical with the only major difference being its fibreglass shell. Vehicles are also three quarters the size of normal cars and all engines are built at one factory in QLD. “We’ve got an awesome calendar of races for next year which includes New Zealand, Tasmania and Darwin,” Chamberlin said.

AROUND THE GROUNDS CRICKET: Penrith have lost their first match of the season, going down to Northern District last weekend. In a two-day match played at Mark Taylor Oval, Penrith batted first scoring a disappointing 210 with opening batsman John DiBartolo scoring a team-high 53. Last Saturday when Northern District returned to the crease they were unstoppable, reaching Penrith’s total with ease by scoring 5/227. Penrith’s Michael Collins was best of the bowlers finishing with figures of 4/74. Penrith have dropped to sixth position on the ladder and will play St George in a two-day match starting this Saturday in Hurstville.

ew Western Sydney Wanderers Dutch import Romeo Castelen says he’s willing to do all he can to turn his new side’s fortunes around.

The Wanderers are coming off a rough start to the A-League season after the AFC Champions League, which the Wanderers won earlier this month, took up much of their focus.

Speaking with the media on Tuesday afternoon, the 31-year-old former Dutch international said he was determined to earn a regular role in coach Tony Popovic’s squad.

“We have a lot of games, we have a big squad and all our players are ready to play,” Castelen said.

“For me, I wasn’t allowed to play in the ACL but now we’re playing at home and we have a lot of games to come. I’ll get my minutes, I’m not concerned about that.”

Castelen joined the Wanderers during the recent off-season and, due to his late arrival, wasn’t permitted to take part in Western Sydney’s AFC Champions League campaign as well as many of their ACL-focused training sessions.

“We had a whole different preparation and training program to the guys playing in the ACL,” Castelen revealed.

We won’t see the Socceroos play another game before the Asian Cup. Is that a good thing or bad thing? It’s an irrelevant thing, because it’s a fact.

Anyway, another game might just serve to confuse further, because in just about every game in the Ange Postecoglou era, there have been moments of reality in just about every part of the emotional spectrum.

Joyful happiness, rueful despair, immense frustration.

Not one complete 90 minute performance has been laid out in the 12 matches since the new man came in 12 months ago.

Free reign was given, thanks to the predicament the team was in after two straight 6-0 defeats to France and Brazil, the lowest point in recent Socceroos history by some margin – World Cup qualification disasters included.

The World Cup was an exercise in hope, though at the same time, a lesson in the brutal truth that Australian football at the international level has a long, long way to go.

The up and down nature of our results since the World Cup and indeed the inconsistent displays within the games has us second guessing.

It really is down to what one man knows, and thinks.

He’s got all the intel, who is right, who is not.

And if Ange Postecoglou does get it right, the reward of winning a competition like this, in front of us, will be immeasurable.

And that, in a way, is the beauty of it.

Like all sport, it’s not scripted. It is a venture into the unknown.

The Asian Cup will be a wonderful journey into that place, and hopefully, it has a glorious ending.

In the months since, Postecoglou has fiddled around to find out more about the players to choose from.

All up he’s used 42, which is a heap for a 12 game period.

Now the time to tinker has stopped.

About the only two players who might possibly force their way into calculations are Alex Brosque of Sydney FC and Nathan Burns of Wellington.

Apart from them, the squad will be made up of the tried and tested, to try and win the biggest prize on offer before the next World Cup in 2018.

It will be a superb month of football in January, and even the games not involving Australia will be well worth watching (and well worth watching live, especially the games in Sydney with tickets at dirt cheap prices, it really is value for money).

But back to the Socceroos.

The coach has some huge decisions to make, and the frustrating thing for the rest of us is, he won’t let on much until that call on the final squad is made in late December.

Ante Covic is the goal keeper for the Western Sydney Wanderers and answers five big questions every Friday in the Western Weekender

You didn’t play against Perth last Saturday night leaving Dean Bouzanis to make his club debut in goals. What was the thought process behind that decision and did you still travel with the team?

I stayed back home like a couple of the other players did. Popa’s got to look at the big picture and try and work out what’s the best situation for the whole team. Everyone knows the schedule we’ve had lately and it does take its toll. In Perth we had a lot of changes and Popa’s got to try and balance it out the best he can by having the freshest legs out there. It gave me a good rest so I can be as fresh as possible leading up to these games.

What goes through your mind when you watch a fellow teammate like Dean in a position that you’ve made your own for so long? Are you happy for them, critical?

It’s kind of weird watching games from home because usually on the rare chance I’m not playing I would be sitting on the bench at the game. I reckon it’s more nerve-racking to watch the game than be in it. Dean’s been working really hard

and we have a really good relationship on the training field and off it. He has the potential to become a very good and reliable goalkeeper. I’m sure Dean would love to knock me out of the position, and that’s healthy competition. He did well on the weekend and will be pushing for more game time in the future. However, I’ll be pushing hard to remain the number one goalkeeper at the club.

Once again the side was filled with some new faces. Do you think having so many different line-ups out there is affecting the team’s cohesion?

Team changes are always going to have an effect. You can’t say changing eight or nine players each week is not going to have an effect. Everyone knows the roles and everyone knows how we want to play but there’s always that familiarity with the players around you that play week in, week out. You always expect one or two changes but to change eight or nine isn’t going to be the easiest thing in the world to cope with. You obviously want cohesion and a regular team each week, so hope-

fully we can have more of that in our next few home games.

You’ve started the season poorly, are players starting to get frustrated and does coach Popovic have his hand hovering over the panic button yet?

No one’s pressing the panic button at the moment. Everyone knows our start hasn’t been ideal. There’s still 22 games left, so a long way still to go. At the moment, we’re only two games out of the top six and we can put ourselves back in the mix without a problem. With only 10 teams in the competition, you go on a decent run and you really find yourself back up there. It’s still very early days.

We’re not pushing the panic button

You’re currently in the midst of a four game home stand in Parramatta, what would be an ideal win/loss ratio over the next few games?

We’ve had four tough away games but we go into these home games with the same mentality of winning every game.

We know we are strong at home but it feels like an age since we’ve played there.

Penrith’s Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre will once again play host to the richest and hottest Australian Money Tournament (AMT) on Tennis Australia’s 2014 calendar.

The 2014 Nepean Platinum and Tiebreak Shootout, which will begin next Friday, will offer a cool $24,000 in prize money and see some of the best players in the country competing including Penrith’s own Jay Adrijic and Tahnee Edgecombe.

“The unique event will be a combination of a traditional tennis tournament, played over five days, with an exciting Tiebreak Shootout taking place on the Friday and Saturday evenings,” Nepean Tennis CEO, Chris Woodland said.

“Saturday night will be quite a spectacle.

There will be a Christmas party, free lessons and competitions for kids, a jukebox, fastest serve contests – all happening at the same time as the Shootout matches.”

Special guests for the evening will include Australian Davis Cup captain Wally Masur, Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler, Federal MP Fiona

“Spectators of all ages are welcome to come along and join in on an evening of fun and great tennis,” Woodland said.

“We want to show that the city of Penrith loves to support our sporting events and is

deserving of first class tennis as a part of that fabric.”

The Nepean Platinum AMT and Tiebreak Shootout runs from next Friday, November 28 until Tuesday, December 2. The Shootout Finals and Christmas party will take place on Saturday, November 29 from 6pm.
