F

ormer State Mulgoa MP Diane Beamer has confirmed she will seek endorsement to run as Labor’s candidate for Lindsay at the next Federal Election. An energetic and enthusiastic Ms Beamer – who quit politics ahead of the 2011 State Election – spoke with the Weekender on Tuesday about her shock attempt at a political comeback. “I’m going to nominate for the seat of Lindsay when nominations are called,” she confirmed. “I really feel passionately that we’ve got to do something about changing the Federal Government and the marginal seat of Lindsay is one of those key seats to ensure that Labor is on track to do that.” It is understood that Ms Beamer will have the support required and her being Labor’s candidate in Lindsay is now purely a formality. NSW Labor is expected to meet on Friday, December 7 where it will confirm its nomination process for the seat. “I’ve lived in this area for over 50 years,” Ms Beamer told the Weekender. “I’m a local through and through and I’m really passionate about this area and I think there’s so much we need to do and keep on doing and keep pressurising and I’ve got the experience and the energy to do that.” If Ms Beamer becomes the candidate and wins the seat, she will have scored

a rare trifecta – having represented the community at all levels of government. She is a former Penrith Mayor and represented the State seat of Badgerys Creek from 1995 until 1999, before becoming the Member for Mulgoa from 1999 until 2011. “I left politics at a time when my two daughters were just starting the HSC and my late mother came to live with me and she was very ill,” Ms Beamer said. “I needed to do it for family. My daughters were three-months-old when I was first elected.” With the pressure of raising a family of five children now behind her, Ms Beamer – who currently lives in Emu Plains – is confident she can face the challenge of winning Lindsay, which Labor currently holds by a margin of just 1.1 per cent. “It is a tight contest, it’s always going to be a tight contest but you have to battle for these electorates and you’ve got to show people that you are somebody you can trust and I think that’s something I did with my 20 years in representative politics,” she said. “I just feel very enthusiastic about it. It was humbling being elected to State Parliament. This will be a challenge and I have no doubts about that but campaigning and talking to people and finding out about people is what I do.” But there remains a significant issue from within surrounding sitting MP Emma Husar. Veteran local doctor set to close his doors due to Mulgoa Road expansion NICOLA BARTON

he Mulgoa Road upgrade is a win for many, but whenever there’s a winner, there’s inevitably a loser. Owner of Glenmore Park Medical Centre, Dr Adrian Sheen, was devastated when he was notified that his practice, which sits on the corner of School House Road in Regentville, was in the firing line of the upgrade. As he continues to fight for his legacy, Dr Sheen claims the State Government has done nothing but “bully and misinform” him. “Money is not the issue, it’s about the principle of them abusing their power to close down businesses and medical services,” he said. “I met with Tanya Davies three times, why does she, the Minister for Ageing, think that taking away local medical care is beneficial for the elderly in Glenmore Park and Regentville?” Due to the road widening, Dr Sheen’s business will be resumed by the State Government, meaning they have the right to take ownership of the land and property. “They said you must close the business down and we can give you the money in

five or so years, they also have the audacity to tell me that my business is now sellable, who in their right mind would buy a business that is soon to have 50 tonne bulldozers to knock all around it,” he said. “When I close, they told me my patients can go to Nepean Hospital, the place with the worst waiting times in the state.” Dr Sheen has seen three generations of patients and has delivered almost 600 babies. He said moving is simply not a choice as he “isn’t 21 anymore”. He also claims that the Minister for Roads, Melinda Pavey, refuses to see him. The Weekender contacted Ms Pavey who referred our questions to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). “Property acquisitions are a necessary part of infrastructure projects. RMS puts a major focus on minimising the impact on affected homeowners, tenants and businesses,” a spokesperson said. Ms Davies said the upgrades are urgent so the State Government is offering Dr Sheen owner initiated acquisition, allowing him to opt out early and get his funds now. “I understand that the acquisition of Dr Sheen’s property is a difficult time for him and I have been and will continue to work with him to achieve a positive result,” she said.

Intriguing snapshot of Penrith P enrith City Council last week released its latest Community Profile, which is an intriguing snapshot about the city where we live. The Community Profile provides the data around who is in the communities of Penrith City, how those communities are changing, and then identifies some of the social issues effecting those communities. It is put together from a range of different sources. The Community Profile reveals that the median age of residents is 34, with life expectancy of 82.6 years. 34.9 per cent of residents are under 25-years-old, 42.1 per cent are between 25 and 54-years-old and 23 per cent are over 55-years-old. Apart from a few quirky stats – like only 75 per cent of households having an Internet connection – the Community Profile also proves where our focus, and funding priorities, need to be. 5.2 per cent of people report needing help day-to-day because of a disability, indicating how important it is that we get the National Disability Insurance Scheme right. The average commuting distance for workers 15 years and over is 20.81kms, and as people’s income, qualifications, occupation and age increase, so does the distance people commute. It proves we need more professional jobs here in Penrith, and we need governments and big business to talk seriously about relocating key offices here. 66.5 per cent of Penrith residents commute to work by driving a car. That’s not a surprise given how over-crowded and unpredictable Sydney’s public transport system has become.

Frighteningly, 12.2 per cent of households are in housing stress (that is, the household is in the lowest 40 per cent of household incomes and is paying more than 30 per cent of their gross weekly income on rent/mortgage payments). Mortgage stress is being experienced by 9.3 per cent of purchasing households and rental stress is being experienced by 29.6 per cent of renting households. And what of our health? 32.8 per cent of Penrith City adults are obese and 37.1 per cent are overweight. 17.3 per cent of children (2-17 years) are overweight and 8.6 per cent obese. 71 per cent of people over 18-years-old undertake no or low exercise over the course of a week. The Community Profile also reveals that Penrith’s population is likely to be close to 260,000 by 2036, an increase of 56,791 between 2016 and 2036. It proves just how important it is for all levels of

government to get infrastructure 100 per cent right in the coming years, otherwise the city could collapse under the pressure. And proving Penrith is a melting pot of cultures, in 2016 in Penrith City, one in five people were born overseas and over 33,000 people spoke a language other than English. The Community Profile is intriguing, and gives us a great insight into Penrith’s past, present and future. And another thing... Will Emma Husar have the last laugh when it comes to the drama surrounding Labor’s candidate for Lindsay at next year’s Federal Election? Ms Husar’s declaration that she now wants to be Labor’s candidate for the election after initially saying she wouldn’t run backs the party into a corner. While Labor now appears locked in to Diane Beamer, Ms Husar may still run, albeit as an independent. While she would be unlikely to win from that position, she would split the Labor vote somewhat. With Lindsay held by such a slim margin, that could hand the seat to the Liberal Party. But many within Labor would suggest that if Ms Husar was the party’s candidate, there would be enough of a swing against her to hand the seat to the Liberals anyway. Regardless, it appears that Ms Husar will play a crucial role in Lindsay at the next election – she isn’t going to leave quietly as many in Labor would have hoped for. Ms Beamer meanwhile is a shock choice, but a safe pair of hands.

Labor springs Lindsay surprise Story continued from » p. 1 Ms Husar said she had not heard of Ms Beamer’s interest in the seat prior to media reports on Tuesday morning. “I was surprised to read this morning reports that indicate intention for a retired NSW Labor politician to run in my seat of Lindsay,” Ms Husar said. “In my last conversation with NSW Labor secretary, I signalled my desire to recontest the seat.” Ms Husar had indicated earlier this year she would not recontest Lindsay in the wake of an investigation by the NSW Labor Party into her behaviour, which cleared her of the most serious allegations. She has now changed her mind. “The allegations against me were by no means career ending and this was supported by the Whelan assessment which found there was no basis for me to resign, it was supported by the party Ombudsmen in their subsequent review of the Whelan assessment,” Ms Husar said. The Weekender understands that NSW Labor considers the Lindsay candidate position for the election vacant, saying it accepted Ms Husar’s “public withdrawal” as the candidate.

“Ultimately I am the sitting member; I won the seat when all indicators were that I wouldn’t. I am of the community and for the community,” Ms Husar said. There is a chance that Ms Husar may run as an independent if she is not confirmed as Labor’s candidate for the election. “I am here for the people of Lindsay and I have unfinished business,” she said. “I have lived in this community for 38 years and want to give back to the community that has given me so much.” Ms Beamer said she would seek nomination regardless of Ms Husar’s stance. “Emma is her own person and she’s entitled to do what she wants to do,” she said. “I feel that her decision not to run for the sake of her family and herself was a good one and I want to nominate so we can make sure we have a Shorten government. “I’ve represented this community at local Council level and at State level and I think that sort of experience puts me in good stead to go down there and really fight for the things that matter here.” Ms Beamer confirmed she had spoken to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten recently, who was “excited” to have someone with her experience on board. Ms Husar was planning to meet with Mr Shorten this week.

Penrith hit by huge downpour

Four-way battle with preselection just around the corner NICOLA BARTON

he Liberal Party is set to decide on its candidate for Lindsay with a four-way preselection battle to take place this weekend. The four contenders will go head to head in front of a large panel of party members, pleading their case to secure endorsement and run against Labor. Liberal sources have told the Weekender that the four candidates are former Hawkesbury Councillor Michael Creed, recent Penrith City Council by-election candidate Belinda Hill, former senior Liberal staffer who now works in the community sector Melissa Grah-McIntosh, and former McMahon candidate Ray King. Ms Grah-McIntosh is believed to be the front-runner. Lindsay is one of the country’s most marginal seats, held by Labor by just 1.1 per cent, and is now considered seriously winnable by the Liberals. Labor’s term has been disrupted by an internal investigation into sitting MP Emma Husar, and confusion over who will represent the party at the election. While Lindsay fell to the party not in government at the last election, it is set to be one of the deciding seats when Australians go to the polls next year.

Possible candidates: Belinda Hill, Melissa Grah-McIntosh, Michael Creed and Ray King Once both parties have candidates in place locals can expect a flurry of visits from Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, with both desperate to build their profile in the region. This week, Mr Morrison confirmed that next year’s Budget would be handed down earlier than normal, on April 2.

That sets up a mid-May election date with either May 11 or 18 likely to be the day Australians go to the polls. “We’ve been delivering on our commitments as a Government,” Mr Morrison said this week. “We can be trusted to run Australia’s Budget and trusted to oversee a growing economy.”

Penrith was hit by a month’s worth of rain in just 12 hours on Wednesday, with many staying home from work to avoid the awful conditions. The heaviest of the falls came during the morning and afternoon commutes. However, Penrith avoided some of the more serious conditions that impacted suburbs across Sydney. Incidents in the local area were generally minor with localised flooding the main problem, including on Tench Avenue under the M4. Penrith State Emergency Service crews responded to numerous calls for assistance. A number of events had to be cancelled due to the weather, including planned Penrith OzTag and Penrith Basketball games and the Aussie Night Markets at Panthers. Better weather is expected over the weekend and next week.

man was killed in a horror crash at Mulgoa on Tuesday morning, with two others suffering injuries. The three-vehicle crash happened on Mulgoa Road about 5.40am on Tuesday, when two rigid trucks and a van collided. The driver of the van died at the scene, while the drivers of the other vehicles were released. One man suffered serious multiple injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital,

while the other had injuries less severe and was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing. Mulgoa Road was closed between Vincent Avenue and Roscrea Drive for several hours, with diversions put in place around the crash scene while police launched an investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Fire & Rescue NSW officers were called to the Great Western Highway about 9.45pm on Monday and extinguished a blaze inside the Ofishal Pets store. When the scene was inspected, police found the business had been broken into and dozens of fish tanks had been

smashed, killing hundreds of exotic and pet fish. Police have been told one tank alone contained fish valued at $10,000. The shop was all but destroyed in the blaze and it’s not certain if it will re-open in the future. A crime scene was established and officers launched an investigation. More jobs for St Marys $20 million asphalt plant opens as road projects create demand across NSW NICOLA BARTON

$20 million state-of-the-art asphalt plant has officially opened in St Marys following a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday. Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts, officially launched the facility acknowledging job creation and business confidence in western Sydney. As a result, the plant has provided 50 jobs, whilst allowing more efficient asphalt transport for road construction in the community. “State Asphalts NSW has delivered thousands of tons of asphalt for thousands of kilometres of road throughout NSW, including the Hume Highway, the Great Western Highway, Camden Valley Way and even through Centennial Parklands,” Mr Roberts said. “Our record spending of $87.2 billion on infrastructure in the next four years means businesses like State Asphalts NSW and many others in western Sydney can be confident about their investment in this great region. “As the Greater Sydney Commission’s vision of a Metropolis of Three Cities becomes a reality, momentum is building quickly around the Western City, as the

Man jailed after refusing to stay off the road

A man disqualified from driving until 2050 has finally paid the ultimate price for his continued offending. Andrew Joseph Cox was sentenced to seven months in jail with a four-month non-parole period after he was caught occupying the driver’s seat at North St Marys on October 23. Penrith Local Court heard Cox had racked up six ‘drive while disqualified’ offences since 2012, and only narrowly dodged full-time prison in 2014 when he received a 14-month Intensive Correction Order for his last offence. But driving unlicenced was not his only indiscretion, with two prior drink driving convictions also appearing on his record. When given the opportunity to explain or defend his actions, Cox, who represented himself, remained mute. “I don’t have anything to say,” he said nonchalantly. Magistrate Geoff Hiatt was scathing. “What did the last magistrate say [would happen] if you were caught driving again?” he asked. “Jail I ‘spose,” Cox replied. “I think the only way to describe you, Mr Cox, is a recidivist offender,” Magistrate Hiatt fumed. Before being led down to the cells, Magistrate Hiatt told Cox he would have been eligible to have the majority of his lengthy driving ban quashed under new legislation had he not re-offended. He was disqualified for a further 12 months. He will be eligible for release on parole on March 21, 2019.

Man “put his own head in the noose” for family member

A drunk man who took the fall for his nephew by jumping in the driver’s seat when they spotted a stationary RBT on the M4, has been stripped of his licence for nine months. Mark James McDonagh fronted Penrith

Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving after he was caught heavily intoxicated behind the wheel by the same RBT station they were trying to avoid. His lawyer told Magistrate Daphne Kok, McDonagh made a “spur of the moment” decision to “put his own head in the noose” when his nephew, a cancelled driver, “panicked” at the prospect of going to jail. He said McDonagh had no intention of driving that day and had organised for his nephew to take him to and from the family gathering. He said he did not know the status of his nephew’s licence and pointed out he only drove for 50 to 80 metres before being pulled over. But Magistrate Kok said her hands were tied, branding the whole incident as being similar to the “blind leading the blind”. “It’s a significant high-range and the explanation is not that great,” she said. “Even driving for a very short space of time was a stupid, stupid thing. His judgement was very, very flawed. “You’ve got to make sure Plan B is not as bad as Plan A.” He was convicted, fined $800 and ordered to fit a Breathalyser device to his car for 24 months.

P-plater caught drink driving for second time

A magistrate has ordered a young motorist to “shape up” and be “sensible” after he was caught drink driving for the second time. Penrith Local Court heard Jaden Dean Price had attended a 21st birthday party before getting behind the wheel. He was later breathalysed, returning a positive reading in the mid-range. Despite his lawyer claiming he stopped drinking “some significant time prior”, Magistrate Daphne Kok was quick to point out the P2 driver should have had no alcohol in his system at all.

She told Price, who already has one mid-range conviction to his name, that it was one thing to be unaware of the exact time it takes alcohol to leave the body, but another to drive to parties where he was planning to drink. “Going to parties on a Saturday night and driving to them is not acceptable because you knew you were going to drink,” she reprimanded. “You have got to be really sensible in the future... you just better shape up.” He was convicted, disqualified from driving for seven months, fined $900 and ordered to attach a mandatory interlock device to his car for 24 months upon completion of his suspension. “Don’t drink within days of driving if you want to keep your licence [in the future],” she suggested.

Man caught driving two days before ban expired

A disqualified driver nabbed behind the wheel two days shy of the completion of his ban has been given the benefit of the doubt. Penrith Local Court heard the man was detected driving after he ducked around the corner from a job site he was working at to check on his investment property. A puzzled Magistrate Daphne Kok questioned the man’s urgency given there was so much at stake. His lawyer said his client’s decision making was “impaired” due to family law difficulties, and the lure of being around the corner was too great. He said his client “could have played dumb” but made complete admissions to police. Magistrate Kok noted up until that point the man had been “quite assiduous”, employing a driver to drive him around to do the right thing. But she was not about to let the concreter off without a dressing down. “This is a really stupid offence – two days!” she lambasted him. He was handed a non-conviction Conditional Release Order for 12 months.

Penrith real estate agent guilty of fraud offences

A Penrith real estate agent has been found guilty of fraud and sentenced to time in jail. Christopher Black, who was the director and licensee-in-charge of CLB Property Group Pty Ltd, misused more than $124,000 that was supposed to be held in trust after the sale of two homes. Mr Black also pleaded guilty to failing to keep deposits for the two properties, worth more than $158,000, in a trust account. “One of the families Black dealt with purchased their home for more than $1 million, of which more than $100,000 was placed into a trust account,” NSW Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said. “CLB Property Group Pty Ltd used the deposit for reasons completely unrelated to the sale of the house, leaving the trust account short of funds when the sale was settled.” The company also accepted a house deposit of about $55,000, which was supposed to be held in trust until the date of settlement. “Black transferred more than $40,000 out of that trust account, again, leaving insufficient funds to pay to the vendor at settlement,” Mr Kean said. “Black had no authority to withdraw money out of the company trust account.” Mr Black was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment, to be served by Intensive Correction Order, with a condition that he completes 400 hours of community service and undertakes mental health treatment. Mr Kean said that it was yet another example of a bad apple in the real estate industry doing the wrong thing, and further highlighted the risks of self-regulation of the industry. “This matter highlights the critical role Fair Trading plays in monitoring and enforcing real estate laws,” Mr Kean said.

Penrith: Woman’s fake stories exposed following charges

A woman has been charged with fraud offences after allegedly using made-up stories to convince members of the public to give her money. Officers from North West Metropolitan Region’s Operation Countdown recently launched an investigation after becoming aware of the instances occurring throughout Penrith and Mt Druitt. The incidents involved a woman approaching strangers in car parks claiming that her mother was sick in Newcastle Hospital and that she needed money for petrol and hospital parking. At 11.30am on Wednesday, November 21 the 49-year-old woman was arrested at Penrith Police Station. She was charged with ‘dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception’ and granted conditional bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, December 18. Inquiries into the incidents continue, and further charges are likely.

Penrith: BMW driver attacked by four men on Station Street

Investigations are continuing following the attack of a man on Station Street on Monday, November 26 at 4pm. The victim was waiting for a female friend in his 2008 black BMW which was stopped in a car park. As he was sitting in the stationary car, four males approached him and forced the doors open. The offenders, who were allegedly wearing knuckle dusters proceeded to attack the man. His mobile phone and cigarettes were taken. The victim was conveyed to Nepean Hospital for treatment to his injuries. The four offenders are all described as caucasian males, 180cm tall and skinny builds. Police urge anyone with information to contact Nepean Police Area Command on 4721 9444.

St Marys: Man gets more than he bargained for at brothel

A Plumpton man has been charged following a trip to a St Marys brothel which ended in a civil dispute. The 22-year-old attended the premises on Tuesday, November 27 at 2.20am. Police were called to the scene and obtained a search warrant to investigate the offender. He was allegedly found in possession of a crystal substance police believe to be methamphetamine. He received a future court attendance notice and was also charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’. He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, January 17.

When is a Will, a Will? There are certain technical requirements for what constitutes a valid Will under the Succession Act 2006 New South Wales. Typically, for a Will to be considered valid in New South Wales; it must be in writing, it must be signed by the Willmaker or at the direction of the Willmaker, it must be signed by the Willmaker with the intention of executing a Will, and should be executed in the presence of, and co-signed by, a minimum of two witnesses. That is not to say however that documents that do not strictly comply with these technical requirements cannot be deemed to be Wills. NSW law has evolved to recognise informal Wills as valid testamentary documents in some circumstances. Informal Wills come in a range of forms. They can include video wills, notes or scrawls made by hand in things like notebooks or scrap pieces of paper, or even unsent text messages. For example, in October 2017 an Australian Court accepted that an unsent text message constituted an informal Will. There are typically four requirements for an informal Will. 1. An informal Will must be an “document”. What constitutes a “document” is set out in statute, and can include anything on which there is writing, anything on which there are marks, figures, symbols etc, anything from which sounds or im-

Emu Plains: Police investigate brawl at local hotel

Police are calling for witnesses following a brawl on Saturday, November 24 in Emu Plains. The incident occurred at a licensed premises on the Great Western Highway in Emu Plains. Between 5.20pm and 5.40pm a large group of men and women began to argue resulting in a vicious brawl, injuring staff members in the process. St Clair: Students injured after bus crashes into car and bike

A bus carrying school children was involved in a collision with a car and motorbike at St Clair last Wednesday, November 21. Around 40 children were on the bus at the time. Two of the students were suffering from minor injuries. The car driver and motorbike driver were also injured and were taken to hospital. Investigations continue.

State Government announces boost in police numbers across New South Wales NICOLA BARTON

he State Government has announced 1,500 new officers will be added to the NSW Police Force, culminating in the biggest increase in 30 years. This announcement follows the twomonth-long ‘Back the Blue’ campaign, led by the Police Association of NSW, which called for 86 additional officers at Nepean Police Area Command alone. Police Association NSW Executive Member, Detective Sergeant Aaron Rynehart, said it’s a step in the right direction. “Numbers are vital, not just in Penrith, but everywhere with crime trends, population growth, technology crime and Internet fraud; we need these additional numbers to keep up with everything that is happening around us,” he said. “This is pretty much the biggest increase ever, it’s a massive step in the right direction and the pressure put on by our campaign has contributed a lot to this.” The State Government will consult with the Association to determine where numbers are most-needed, but the final decision will be up to the Commissioner, Mick Fuller. Businesses can do more New workplace guide helps employers assist staff facing domestic violence issues NICOLA BARTON

he Australian Services Union (ASU) is fighting for the rights of those experiencing family violence, as the launch of a workplace guide hopes to help businesses respond to struggling colleagues. The guide follows the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women as a way to continue the conversation. Currently 800,000 women experience violence in their home, women who, the next day, must put on their make-up, cover the bruises and go to their day job. Branch Secretary of the Australian Services Union, Natalie Lang, said the guide is part of the We Won’t Wait campaign. “We won’t wait because women can’t wait, we can not say we have to wait for change or raise more awareness, the awareness is already raised,” she said. “We’ve had many organisations come to us asking what they can do to support women to have safe disclosures in the workplace and assist them with more than just a leave entitlement to leave domestic violence and that’s why we developed the workplace guide.”

Ms Lang said domestic violence is a workplace issue as financial independence could be the difference between life and death. “If you’re a manager, delegate, a co-worker or a CEO, this guide is for any workplace and has been designed to assist you to properly support women in your workplace,” she said.

“Family violence effects every single corner of our community and we need to equip every single workplace to be able to respond to it.” The guide features information about what domestic violence is, how it affects people and what are the signs to look out for. Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia CEO, Karen Willis, said employers need to dig deeper into their employees’ behaviour.

Reduce power bill shock It’s now easier than ever to switch electricity providers and save money NICOLA BARTON

he State Government is encouraging the community to make a savvy energy switch, which could see households saving hundreds of dollars. The free Energy Switch electricity deal, accessed through Service NSW, is set to be a major shake-up for electricity retailers. Premier Gladys Berejiklian joined Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello at Penrith Service Centre to announce its availability at all Service NSW Centres and online. “Energy Switch is a game changer and is more than just another government comparison website,” Ms Berejiklian said. “For the first time for an Australian government, customers can switch providers in minutes with the click of a mouse or a chat with Service NSW. “With summer just around the corner, Energy Switch has come at the right time to help households save when their energy is highest.” With the cost of living on the rise, the State Government believe this is a great way for locals to implement major price cuts to their power bills. During the pilot of the program, the average saving for people who switched was

Mr Dominello said this program will take the stress out of changing providers. “Service NSW will do the heavy lifting for the customer by checking their energy usage, searching the market for available

plans and if savings can be found, then we will make the switch for them,” he said. “Energy Switch works by using a customer’s latest electricity e-bill to scan every retailer in NSW and gives customers the cheapest three electricity plans available. It also displays other features of each plan such as solar compatibility.”

Research carried out by Service NSW found 70 per cent of NSW households pay too much for electricity, particularly customers who haven’t switched for more than 12 months. Energy Switch can be accessed in-person at Service NSW and online at http://energyswitch.service.nsw.gov.au.

Festive spirit alive & well Light it up: Thousands to gather in Penrith for official launch of Christmas tree NICOLA BARTON

he festive season will come alive this evening (Friday, November 30) as the community gathers to light Penrith’s 30-foot Christmas tree. The man in the red suit will be on hand to mark the occasion alongside some other special guest characters. The evening is set to light up the night as fun activities and entertainment signify the beginning of everyone’s favourite time of year. Penrith CBD Corporation CEO, Gai Hawthorn, said the event is a great opportunity for families to come together, support local businesses and enjoy the magic of Christmas. “Lots of people know each other in Penrith, but we all live such busy lives, so it’s events like this that really bring the community together and let you run into all the people you know and their families,” she said. “It’s all about creating that anticipation and excitement that the next day is the start of December, something that gets the kids really excited.” The night will see a variety of activities and entertainment including photos, market stalls and food trucks as well as

carols and an ‘Elf on the Shelf’ Pantomime performed by PAWS. Last year’s event welcomed 12,000 locals and Ms Hawthorn said they are expecting a similar figure for tonight’s celebrations. “There will be singing and dancing and characters, the little ones just love it, it’s a really great way to interact with the crowd,” she said. “There will be so much local talent and carols, it’s going to be a really good atmosphere.” The Rotary Club of Penrith Valley will be selling raffle tickets with all proceeds going towards Penrith Community Kitchen. “It’s a fantastic time year after year, the community really get behind it too, it’s great to have initiatives like these to give back to local businesses and not-forprofits,” Ms Hawthorn said. The festivities will commence on Friday, November 30 from 5pm and run through the evening at Memory Park. The lights of the Christmas tree will be turned on at around 8pm. “We couldn’t pull the event off without Penrith City Council, setting up the park for us, bringing in the extra bins and helping us with road closures. We are so grateful for their continued support,” Ms Hawthorn said.

New Rotaract club encourages young adults to step up and help the community NICOLA BARTON

new Blue Mountains and Nepean Rotaract Club has just launched and is calling for all young professionals to join in on their life-changing mission. As a junior sub-branch of the Australian Rotary Club, the aim of the group is to connect motivated individuals to business professionals and community leaders by striving to make a difference in the world. Men and women from 18 to 30-years-old are encouraged to join and can expect to be a part of a wide range of activities, fundraisers and international events. Club mentor Amanda Barnes said Rotaract can open up a whole world of opportunities. “We haven’t had one in the Penrith area for some time now, we really want to restart that so we’re looking for young community-minded individuals who want to change the world,” she told the Weekender. “We want motivated young professionals, they could be students or in the workforce, there’s no exclusion, it’s just so young people can get together, make a difference and grow professionally.” The club will have monthly meetings at

the Lapstone Hotel on the second Thursday of each month. So far they have held two preliminary meetings but need at least 20 members before they can officially register. “I’m a youth worker, I have two jobs working with post-crisis individuals and early intervention, through both my professional and personal experience, this is an opportunity for young people that is second to none. The exposure and opportunities you are afforded is incredible,” Ms Barnes said. “If young people are interested in current affairs and community then this is a vehicle to be the change that they want to see.” Although Ms Barnes currently runs the meeting, once officially up and running they will be completely member driven. This means that events, trips and fundraisers will be catered towards the interests and passions of its members. “There is a quote that says ‘I joined Rotary to change the world and people’s lives but the greatest life I’ve changed is my own’, and that says it all really,” Ms Barnes said. Hard work will pay off in the end NICOLA BARTON

he HSC can be a daunting process, but for Colyton resident, Agou Agou, commuting two hours a day and being unable to afford textbooks made it an almost impossible task. While other students were cramming for an exam, Mr Agou was photographing textbook chapters and trying to catch up on his two-hour commute to and from school. Migrating to Australia from South Sudan as the eldest of seven children, Mr Agou said he was determined to make a better future for himself. “In Years 11 and 12, my grades started going down when I had to really study. I was going to do English Advanced but I did not have the resources to learn like my textbooks,” he said. “To catch up, I took photos of other people’s notes. Some people did not have good handwriting, so it was hard to learn the concepts.” Mr Agou completed his high school studies at De La Salle College in Ashfield. For many new migrant teens, school is their first exposure to social life and foray into the Australian education system.

“South Sudan is a failed state and crime is rampant there. At high school (in Australia), I was very introverted. I only had one friend until Year 12,” he said. “From Year 11, I felt the added pressure to perform. The teachers said you do not have a future if you do not perform well in your subjects.” Mr Agou was saddened but not shocked when he didn’t achieve his desired ATAR, but refused to lose hope. After exploring his options, he now attends UTS Insearch, studying a Diploma of Business which, when completed, will allow him to complete a Bachelor of Business Finance. “I would like to learn about investment and then maybe do a Master of Finance. I would like to get into accounting,” Mr Agou said. Despite discovering a smooth pathway to university, resourcing is still an obstacle Mr Agou faces with his studies. “My dad buys my textbooks but sometimes he takes a while to buy what I need. I have most of my textbooks now and if I need to, I will use YouTube to further understand concepts,” he said. Mr Agou said he is hopeful for his future and will continue to work hard during his tertiary studies.

erguson’s Terry White Chemmart High Street has a new employee, but unlike the other staff members, this robotic helper needs a name. The pharmacy is offering customers the chance to decide what their brand new dispensing robot will be called with a competition. A $400 voucher will be on offer for the promotion, which will reward the chosen name for the robot. Co-owner Lindsey Clark said the main idea of the machine is to allow the pharmacy’s staff, particularly pharmacists to spend more time with customers and less time dispensing. “This sort of state-of-the-art technology is becoming more popular in pharmacy provision, both in hospitals and community pharmacies,” he said. “It’s the first of its kind in Penrith. Customers are usually concerned that this technology will replace staff, but we can assure them this is not the case. “It will help perform time consuming tasks which will enable us to spend more time speaking with customers and less time dispensing. In fact, since we installed the robot three weeks ago, we have hired a new

pharmacy intern and a naturopath to help with our focus on health.” The pharmacy is currently undergoing a refit with two full size private consultation rooms, which will be fully functional from next week. These rooms will help accommodate the current programs such as flu vaccinations, AIA vitality health checks, dietitian consultations, Tony Ferguson and Impromy weight loss, Lice Clinic Australia and pharmacist medication reviews. “We have also invested in an InBody analyser, which measures body fat and muscle percentage so we can offer a complete weight management solution for our customers,” Mr Clark said. “We needed to reinvest in our business and build a complete health and wellness solution for customers for the next 10 years. It fits in well with our full health solution and complements the GP practice and sleep consultant currently located within our building and sets us apart from all other local pharmacies.” Mr Clark said it’s a really exciting time for the pharmacy and the staff as they look forward to delivering better health outcomes.

F

rank Ifield is an Australian music legend who’s ready to give back, and with the help of homegrown entertainment royalty Ross “Rossco” Hutchison, the pair are preparing to do just that with their spectacular new show ‘It’s All About Australia’. Frank told the Weekender he was excited to be working with emerging young talent in a show that will be focused on all things Australian. “One of the things I’ve always been involved in is trying to promote Austral-

ian talent because I’m very much aware of how good our Australian performers are,” he said. The show aims to open our eyes to the extraordinary achievements being made by Australians overseas. “It’s about time we all knew what we have and what people have done,” he said. “It’s nice to put it all together in one show. It gives you a feeling of being, I suppose you could say, proud to be Australian.” The show is set to be a celebration of Australian talent featuring five young local musicians who alongside Ifield and Hutchison will be telling the story of

Australia’s long running musical victories, as well as Ifield’s early career prior to The Beatles being his support act, and his string of global number one hits. Following a lifetime of supportive people rallying for his success, Ifield says it’s now his turn to pass on some wisdom. “People in showbusiness were exceptionally good to me when I was a kid, maybe they saw something in me that they thought they could bring out but there were always people who rallied around and gave me big breaks, and so really I feel I owe the same thing to the people coming up now,” he said. “It’s the first time I’ve come across most of these kids, and I didn’t really know

what it was going to be like at all. I sat there and I watched them doing things, and I was impressed with the fact that they can do songs that I remember from when I was a kid.” The show will be presented at the Penrith Paceway, where Rossco is trying to build a reputation of producing exciting new shows and launching the careers of new talent. To have Ifield performing in Penrith too is a real coup. ‘It’s All About Australia – A Complete Night Out!’ will be showing at the Penrith Paceway Showroom on December 14 and 15. Serving as the screen adaption of Lynda La Plante’s 1980s mini-series, this modern-day dark thriller is a feisty, female centric film that explores issues of gender, race, broken families, religion and politics. Ê Channel Nine has announced Rebecca Gibney is reprising her role as forensic psychiatrist Jane Halifax for a new mini series titled ‘Halifax: Retribution’. In the new series, Jane Halifax faces the most thrilling and dangerous case of her career when she hunts down a killer terrorising an entire city. Gibney previously played the famous role in some 20 telemovies from 1994 to 2002. “I’m beyond thrilled to be re-teaming with Roger Simpson who created Jane Halifax and returning to Channel Nine where it all began,” Gibney said. Coming off the back of two National Swim Safety weeks, I’ve talked a lot about education and early swimming lessons both playing an integral part in keeping our kids safe around the water. One of the very best parts of my job is to visit day care centres, pre-schools, community groups and primary schools to talk about water safety. Children of this age learn well through fun and play, so we teach the water safety rules with stories, songs, movement, CPR practise and our mascot, Paddles the Platypus! However this is just 30 minutes in a child’s life, and water safety principles need constant reinforcement by parents and other caregivers. Education should start very early, at home, with parents consistently talking to children about the rules – never go near the pool without an adult, never climb the pool fence, shut the gate, never swim alone, let an adult know if another child goes near the pool alone, swim between the flags at the beach, reach to rescue, be careful in the bath, no breath holding games or challenges underwater, etc. We can also educate by being a good role model – stay with children as they bath and explain why you are doing so. Put the mobile phone down when supervis-

ing children in the pool or at the beach or river. Get in the pool and show them how much fun can be had swimming together. Be sun smart and put sunscreen on yourself too. Empty Eskies, buckets and baths after use and tell children why it is important to do so. Don’t drink alcohol when recreating around water. If you don’t know how to swim, or have a fear of the water, be sure not to hand that down to your children – it is never too late to learn (and we now offer adult group swimming lessons)! Swim Australia recommends starting swimming lessons from six months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this. Fear of the water is acquired, so make sure baby has regular baths and showers from newborn, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Your six-month-old will then accept the water much more readily, and with less fear, when starting lessons. Overall, always make it fun to promote retention of the water safety messages covered – there are some great swim safety education resources available through the ‘Kids Alive, Do The 5’ website, including books, songs cartoons, etc. Our Water Safety Visits use these resources and are free of charge within the Penrith LGA – if you would like us

Don’t put up with pain in the ball of your foot. There’s plenty of treatment options... Quite often, our podiatry team see people walk through our doors complaining of pain in the ball of their foot. There are many different diagnoses regarding this kind of pain, however it is common a plantar plate injury has occurred. The plantar plate is a thick fibrocartilaginous ligament that spans across the bottom of the forefoot. It is responsible for preventing excessive extension of the toes and stabilising them from compressive stress that occurs with walking. What to look for? Injury to the plantar plate usually presents with symptoms such as sensation of “walking on a marble” or “walking on the bones of the ball of your foot.” An obvious plantar plate injury can be seen when one of the smaller toes appears to be lifted off the ground or crosses over other toes (most commonly the big toe) whilst standing. Causes Due to its mechanical role, excessively high and abnormal pressures under the forefoot are the main culprit. Plantar

plate injuries commonly occur intrinsically with bunion formation, as the long bone of the first digit moves away from the long bone of the second digit causing excessive stretch of the ligament. This structure can only expand so much before it tears. Alternatively, a rapid increase or change in physical activity levels; changes in footwear or excessive wear of high heeled shoes; increases in body weight; all increase the pressure and stress on plantar plate. What can podiatrists do to help? Treatment of a plantar plate injury is focused at addressing the current pain and symptoms along with preventing progression of the injury. There are many treatment options available and an assessment by a podiatrist will help to determine which is appropriate for you. Taping techniques, splinting devices, orthotics, footwear modifications, routine strengthening and stretching exercises can all help to heal a plantar plate injury. A plantar plate injury is a common yet treatable condition. If you, or somebody you know is experiencing pain in this region, it is best to have it thoroughly assessed so that it receives appropriate treatment.

You too can learn the secret of being content in life... Sometimes you read something so staggering, so extraordinary, that you have to read it twice to make sure what it really is saying. In the Bible’s New Testament book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul wrote these amazing words: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” How could that possibly be? Content? And in any and every situation? People today seem to be the very opposite of content. Many are frustrated and unhappy with life. They are restless and anxious, fearful that they are missing out. Discontentment is the characteristic of so many people’s lives. They are continually restless looking for contentment by having more and more. And this is not surprising because TV, radio and magazine advertising fills us with a relentless passion to have more and more and bigger and better. We feel as if we must have it! Yet, Paul, in the Bible says, “I have

learned the secret of contentment”! What is that secret? Paul’s secret is knowing Jesus Christ. Paul had got a right perspective on life and because of this he knew that real contentment in life is found when a person is trusting and following Jesus. A Christian writer from many years ago, Harry Ironside, once wrote that trusting “Christ is enough to satisfy the hearts of all who confide in him and who leave everything in his hands”. This may seem surprising in a world that is so restless and dissatisfied, yet the reality is that Christian people who know Christ do have a deep peace and can indeed echo Paul’s words, “I have learned the secret of contentment”. There is a legendary area south of Darwin known as the “Never Never”, which is now lost in the ever changing mists of time. In the early 1900s a lady wrote a book about life in this part of the Northern Territory and it went on to sell more than one million copies worldwide. Such was the power of Jeannie Gunn’s We of the Never Never that it became standard reading for every young Australian. The Never Never was that region south of Katherine that contained just a handful of people and no white women. It is still possible to walk in the footsteps of Ms Gunn, who lived to the ripe old age of 91 and became a champion of struggling returned servicemen from the Great War. She was no ordinary lady: she matriculated from Melbourne University and became a teacher before marrying Aeneas Gunn. Aeneas, boss of the 5000 square km Elsey Station was known as The Maluka

by the Aboriginals, who worked for him as stockmen and servants. The book is famous for its characterisations and its depiction of life in what was essentially a wilderness area. Characters such as the Dandy, the Fizzer, the Quiet Stockman and Cheon the Chinese cook all leapt from the pages and were based on real people. The book later became controversial because of the depiction and treatment of Aboriginals. Recently I went to the Never Never in search of remnants from the book and the extraordinary life of the only white women south of Katherine in 1900. In the book, Ms Gunn describes the journey between Darwin and Pine Creek by train. The station where she was confronted by chauvinistic bushmen trying to talk her out of continuing her epic trip is still there and is now on the National Trust register. From Pine Creek, she headed south on horseback to “the Katherine” which was a tiny settlement of just four people. She eventually made it to the front gate of the station which was 70km from the homestead.

Today, the Elsey station still exists, in part. It is owned and managed by the Northern Land Council as a working cattle property and a tourist attraction. We know the region more famously as Mataranka, a town that groups up alongside the Northern Australia railway. The nearby hot springs draw thousands of visitors travelling along the Stuart Hwy. In the centre of town are statues of Aeneas and Jeannie and some of the streets are named after characters from the book. Travelling south from Mataranka there is a turnoff to Elsey Cemetery. I drove for several kilometres along a sealed road and eventually came to the impressive homestead burial ground. Walking around the site, it is very moving to see the headstones of characters from We of the Never Never, including the Maluka, and to realise that they never left this wild part of Australia. Aeneas Gunn died of malarial dysentery after just a year at the Elsey and the broken hearted Ms Gunn returned south to live out her life in the suburbs of Melbourne, never to return to the Never Never and never to marry again. A short drive from the cemetery is the original homestead site. A stone cairn and some old photos depict the site but there is no sign of the homestead. Built of wood, it would have been eaten out by termites many decades ago. I have to admit it was a desolate, uninspiring place. How people made a life there is beyond comprehension in these days of air conditioners and refrigerators. The old homestead comprised of several wooden shacks, a cookhouse and a storage shed. Once a year a wagon load of supplies was delivered at the homestead. Yet, people were happy in that wild, untamed place. And through the book they get to live on forever. Today, the term Never Never has lost much of its meaning. The Stuart Hwy, once just a track through the bush beside the overland telegraph is now packed with huge three trailer road trains and thousands of caravans. If you are travelling the North Country, take the time to visit the Elsey. Standing there surrounded by giant termite mounds with only the sigh of the breeze in the stunted trees and shrubs, you will get a sense of what it was like to live in the Never Never.

Blood transfusions: How they work in cats and dogs

Just like humans, animals can donate blood to save their mates... As pet care becomes more advanced, it is becoming increasingly common to give unwell pets blood transfusions. Blood transfusions may be needed for many reasons and often animals that receive blood transfusions are saved from life threatening disease. Why is blood given? There are many reasons why ill animals need blood transfusions – the most common being blood loss from trauma, autoimmune disease, rat bait toxicity and snake bites. Blood not only contains red blood cells which carry oxygen, but also platelets which are vital for clotting. Blood also contains additional clotting factors and protein. It can be beneficial in animals with severe infections and clotting problems.

Are there blood types in animals? Yes! Some animals are easier to give blood transfusions to than others. Both dogs and cats have different blood types but interestingly, dogs can receive blood from any other dog as long as it is their first transfusion. For subsequent transfusions, dogs need to be blood typed to avoid reactions. Just like humans, some

dogs are universal donors whose blood can be given to any other dog. Cats are a bit more complex and always need to be blood typed to avoid reactions. We have even previously performed blood transfusions on very sick ferrets! Where do we get the blood from? Obtaining blood can be difficult as we need donor animals. We will often use large breed, young and healthy animals as donors. The procedure is very simple and only takes five to 10 minutes. The donor animal is then placed on a drip and

given a large meal to restore their energy levels. There is even a blood bank based in Melbourne where we can purchase blood products for animals. Blood transfusions are a gift for animals as they are usually life-saving and immediately make a very sick animal feel better. They are not possible without donor animals and we are very grateful for our donors. They are often animals owned by our staff. Sometimes retirement village units or apartments are advertised for sale ‘off the plan’. This simply means that they’re being offered for sale before construction has been completed. There are definitely some advantages to buying off the plan. One of the main benefits is financial. Since off the plan properties tend to be priced in line with current values, you’ll often pay less than if you waited for up to a year or more until construction is completed. Women’s winner Radka Kahlefeldt was unchallenged in her first look at the Penrith course, with the 34-year-old super mum winning in a time of 4:12:25. “But I didn’t need to think twice about it, or even for a second. I still have a lot of unfinished business in this sport. I love it and I love the adventures we get to do.” The second-placed Appleton, who resides in the Blue Mountains, was happy with his performance in front of family and friends. “You never say no to a podium finish and it has been a long season, so I will take whatever I can get at this time of year,” he said. “It was great to be racing here in Penrith, with my mum and dad here and a lot of local support and to perform well was an extra bonus.”

Sydney got the thumbs up from the newly crowned champions who, like the other 1500 athletes competing, revelled in the perfect race conditions at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. “I was just over the moon with how the race panned out,” Bozzone, who finished in a time of 3:43:26, said. “What a beautiful venue but the straights seem to go on forever. The final 10km [of the run] felt like a long, long, long, long way. “I am a racer and I love doing this and after the accident, when I woke up in hospital the thought came into my head ‘if you want this to be over, this is a pretty good excuse’.

Kahlefeldt’s win on debut at Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney didn’t surprise anyone, with the Czech dismantling the field early and impressing her fellow competitors. “Leading start to finish is a great feeling but it is very hard to pace yourself the whole time on your own,” Kahlefeldt said. “I love this venue, it is beautiful and thank you very much to everyone for coming down, to the volunteers and race organisers. It is an amazing event, my first time here and I loved it.” Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney is confirmed to return to Penrith next year on November 24 2019.

Our winter wonderland Councillors throw support behind $200 million winter sports facility in Penrith NICOLA BARTON

rogress on the state-of-the-art winter sporting facility has been made as Penrith Councillors unanimously voted in favour of the proposal at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on Monday. Local developer and resident, Peter Magnisalis, unveiled the plan back in August, which was received highly from the local community. The $200 million centre, which will sit on the corner of Jamison Road and Tench Avenue, is expected to generate almost 900 indirect jobs. Penrith Councillor Kevin Crameri welcomed the motion and said it will be an asset to the community. “Penrith is claiming to be the adventure capital of the world and with iFly and Whitewater, I think that this establishment is going to be a very big boom for Penrith,” he said. “People that would go to the snow, would come here more often because it’s there for beginners as well, it’s great for learning and I think this will be one of Penrith’s greatest assets once it gets going.

What the new winter sports facility in Penrith could look like “I fully support this, I just hope it withstands the protocol it must go through now.” Councillors voted to amend the height of the site to facilitate the construction of the 300 metre indoor ski slope and hotel.

The 2.35ha block will also feature an ice-skating rink, ice climbing facilities, rock climbing facilities, altitude training, gymnasium and training facilities as well as food and drink premises. Cr Kath Presdee said the facility is para-

mount in promoting overnight tourism in the Penrith area. “This is a great thing for Penrith, it’s a tourism drawcard, like our sporting facilities at the Lakes, it’s not just tourists but athletes and schools, that’s the sort of thing we need in Penrith, not just visit tourism but overnight tourism and that’s what this facility might bring,” she said. The Winter Sports World will be incorporating a diverse raft of year-round wintersports facilities appealing to both local western Sydney residents and domestic and international tourists. “People will book months ahead to get in, this is something that is a contrast to have snow in one of the hottest places in the world, it’s definitely something that should be pushed forward,” Cr Marcus Cornish said. Council officers will now forward the Planning Proposal to the Minister for Planning with a request to issue a Gateway Determination. It will soon be displayed for the public to have their say. Before the draft, Giants National Recruiting Manager Adrian Caruso said early picks would be used on the best available talent rather than a specific type of player. Caruso stuck to his word by bolstering the club’s midfield stocks. The Giants were due to enter the draft at pick nine but live trading and Academy bids saw this pushed back to selection 11. 18-year-old Bendigo Pioneers midfielder Jye Caldwell was selected by the Giants at 11 for his hardness and desperation to get his hands on the ball. “We didn’t expect Jye to be available with this pick,” Caruso said. “He’s a super competitor and has the athleticism most midfielders don’t have.

The Western Sydney Wanderers will look to lift themselves off the bottom end of the ladder when they face a strong Melbourne Victory side searching for five straight wins on Saturday night. Markus Babbel’s men are in a mini slump, recording just one victory after five rounds of A-League competition. Last Friday the Wanderers went down again, this time at home and at the hands of lowly Newcastle, who notched up their first win of the year with a 2-0 victory. Speaking after the match, Babbel said his team are struggling to score points and need to turn it around fast. “We did many things right in the game, we created chances but we couldn’t score – this has been a problem for us,” he said. “Not many players can score goals, so we have to work on this. All of this is a process, from where we started until now is a big improvement but we have to keep on going.” Meanwhile, the Wanderers have announced they will take on Leeds United at the new Western Sydney Stadium in Parramatta on Saturday, July 20. Leeds United CEO, Angus Kinnear, said the match will mark another milestone what is the centenary season of the club.

Winning comes in threes for Penrith Minibike Club NATHAN TAYLOR

hree young riders from the Penrith Minibike Club have ended the year on a high, crowned Minikhana State Champions. Following a long and gruelling year travelling around Sydney competing, the trio from the Castlereagh-based club came out on top following several impressive performances across the season. 11-year-old Drew Pfeiffer finished first in the 110cc mini wheels category, while 13-year-old Moke Yates took home gold in the 85cc big wheels category as well as the coveted Minikhana Cup. After becoming State Champion in 2016, 12-year-old Nicholas Moore did it again earlier this month, this time winning the 85cc small wheels category. Penrith Minibike Club Secretary, Natalie Ferguson, said the entire club was beyond proud of their young riders. “We are so proud… to win is an amazing achievement because there’s only five state champions crowned from the six clubs competing and we have three of them,” she said.

Photo: Melinda Jane “To become state champion you not only have to be in A-grade but you have to travel and compete against clubs at their home grounds. “You need to be focused and driven to go to every single event because if you miss any, it will be at your own detriment.”

Ferguson said Minikhana plays a major role in developing and educating riders for other, high profile motorcycle sports. “We teach the kids skills so they can go to other disciplines, like motocross or endure, later on,” she said. “Minikhana makes kids better, safer riders and they love it.”

Top soccer talent on show at popular Fiji tournament NATHAN TAYLOR

ix local football players will call Fiji home for the next week when they represent International Football Group NSW at the 2018 Fiji Soccer Cup. Beginning this Sunday and running for one week, the Fiji Soccer Cup will feature some of the best young soccer teams from across the South Pacific including Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Nepean FC players Cameron Morris, Alek Catanzariti, Max Blackhurst, Luke Sigma and former Nepean FC players Eddie Chung and Charlie Connell will land in the island paradise tomorrow before preparing for their first game of the tournament on Sunday. The tournament, now in its ninth year, is sanctioned by the Fiji Football Association and is used to identify talent in the Pacific region. 14-year-old Eddie Chung, who recently switched from Nepean FC to the Blacktown Spartans, was invited on the trip of a lifetime after being scouted during a match earlier this year. The Year 8 student said he’s over the moon about competing and can’t wait for the experience. “This will be my first trip to Fiji and I’m

very excited to be heading over,” Eddie told the Weekender. “I’m looking forward to playing soccer in a different country and meeting new people from all over the Pacific.” Eddie’s side will travel all over the tiny nation, playing games in numerous cities during the week-long period. The centre-back believes his side, which features many of his ex-teammates from Nepean FC, has a good chance of going all the way. “We definitely have the team to win it all. We’re a good side and have players in the team from all over the state,” Eddie said confidently. “It certainly makes it more enjoyable going over with my Nepean FC teammates, the chemistry we have is strong. I also go to school with some of the boys and we can’t stop talking about the trip.” While most of the tour to Fiji will be spent on the soccer pitch, Eddie is looking forward to having some downtime too, with a local village visit and island cruise on the itinerary. Smith to play at Howell Suspended Aussie captain expected to attract big crowds over next two weekends NATHAN TAYLOR

f there’s one blessing from the balltampering scandal that rocked the cricket world earlier this year, it’s that suspended Aussie captain Steve Smith will be bringing his world-class talent to Howell Oval over the next two weekends. Smith and his Sutherland teammates will arrive in town this Saturday morning to battle Penrith in Round 7 of the NSW Premier Cricket First Grade competition. The highly anticipated two-day match is expected to attract hundreds of curious locals, who will be keen to see one of the world’s best cricketers in their very own backyard. Penrith head coach Michael Wholohan said while the entire club is excited about Smith’s arrival, they also know they have a big job at hand. “They are a very good side, Sutherland. They have some very good players with Smith being one of the best in the world,” he told the Weekender. “I have no doubt our players are looking forward to the challenge, it’s always good to play against the best.

at every ground he’s visited. Wholohan said it’s been more than a decade since someone of Smith’s calibre had graced the Howell Oval pitch for a Grade cricket game. “It’s probably been a while… the big

internationals don’t play as often as they once did,” he said. “There’s a buzz around the community about Steve Smith coming to town, so hopefully there will be plenty of people supporting Penrith of course. “It’ll be business as usual for us but we’ll certainly have some extra stock in the canteen.” Despite losing back-to-back games, Penrith have enjoyed a strong start to the season and currently sit in fourth place on the ladder. Penrith are yet to lose at home to begin the year, and Wholohan hopes that trend will continue this weekend despite the excitement of Smith’s visit. “We always enjoy playing at home, we are undefeated at home this season. We are pretty confident we can continue in that vein,” he said. “We had a strong pre-season and some of the guys have an extra year of experience under their belts. Hopefully our form will continue up until Christmas and into the New Year.” Penrith will take on Sutherland this Saturday, December 1 and next Saturday, December 8 from 10.30am at Howell Oval.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith have lost back to back games, losing to Eastern Suburbs in Round 6 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Playing in a Two-Day match at Waverley Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. Penrith put on a strong batting display on day one before being dismissed for 295. Brent Williams was best with the bat scoring 74. When Eastern Suburbs hit the crease, they lost a few wickets early before rallying back in a big way to steal the win with three wickets to spare. Michael Collins was best with the ball for Penrith taking 3/79. Penrith will look to break their two-game losing streak when they face Steve Smith and his Sutherland side this Saturday at Howell Oval from 10.30am. he Penrith Referees’ Association is set to expand and offer young referees more opportunities following a new partnership with Seven News. The local association, which has been running for more than 50 years, announced this week that the top rating Channel Seven news service had come on board as its major sponsor for 2019 and beyond. The new partnership will allow the association to offer all new referees their on and off-field gear at no cost, as well as zero fees to undertake the Level 1 referees course. “When the Penrith Refs put the call out for help, we jumped at the chance to be involved with the game in rugby league’s heartland,” Seven News Sydney Director, Jason Morrison said. “Seven News has always enjoyed great support from Sydney’s greater west and we are glad to be able to do our little bit to say thanks.” Mel McLaughlin, Seven News sports anchor, said it was a great partnership. “I get excited about anything to do with grassroots sport and particularly in Sydney’s west, where I grew up,” she said.
