t stands as a true example of the mixture of city and rural life that Penrith offers, but progress will mean the end of the line for Vicary’s Winery and Woolshed.

One of Sydney’s longest continuously operating vineyards, Vicary’s will be forced to make way for the development of Badgerys Creek airport.

Eviction notices have been served to Badgerys Creek and Luddenham residents living on Commonwealth lands to make way for the new airport, which remains one of the local region’s most controversial issues.

Some residents have been leasing their homes for over 30 years from the Federal Government after their properties were acquired for the airport decades ago.

Vicary’s Winery owner and winemaker Chris Niccol said that whilst he is still open for business, he expects the doors of the woolshed to shut in November or December next year.

“The train shed has already closed but the woolshed and winery is still open,” he said.

“Unless someone offers financial support to move the business, I expect that I will retire at the end of next year.”

He says it will be a great loss to Australian culture to see the woolshed close.

“In the 1970’s the government and others were looking to establish an ‘Australian culture’ and that’s when there was a revival of the woolshed.

People really started to value the folk songs and woolshed atmosphere and there’s nothing quite like Vicary’s anywhere else in Sydney,” he said.

t 11 am on November 11, 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.

Post war, Remembrance Day has become synonymous with recognising and remembering all those who have given their lives to serve our country.

Both the St Marys RSL Sub-Branch and Penrith RSL Sub-Branch will be holding services this Tuesday, November 11 to reflect on the local sacrifices made by our community.

Tony Fryer of St Marys Sub-Branch said that their local service will be held at the guns memorial out the front of the RSL Club starting at 10.40am.

“The service will go for approximately half an hour and there will be an opportunity for people to lay a wreath and reflect on their losses,” he said.

“ANZAC Day is the biggest public commemoration event but Remembrance Day is equally important and serves as a time for personal reflection.”

A dozen schools will have student representatives in attendance. Mr Fryer said that educating local school children about Australia’s war efforts is very important.

A Remembrance Day service will be held in Memory Park next Tuesday “We are actually in the middle of launching a project for the ANZAC centenary, where students will, through their schools, research 162 volunteers who were

involved in the war,” he said.

“The research on each person will then be published in a bound book that will be presented to the local historical society.”

Penrith RSL’s service will be held at 10.40am at Memory Park. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in Penrith RSL’s covered car park.

The race that stopped the nation became the race that stunned the nation on Tuesday afternoon, with much of the focus turning to the deaths of two horses following the Melbourne Cup. Opinions vary, from those who say it’s “just part of racing” through to those who want the entire sport banned.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle and is often muddled depending on who’s speaking.

The deaths of both Admire Ratki and Araldo are very sad, and quite rightly, put a dark cloud over the country’s biggest party on Tuesday.

It would be disgraceful in fact if we didn’t have the debate we’re now having – no matter what the circumstances, compassion deserves to be shown and the outpouring of grief is well placed.

Unfortunately, as part of that, uninformed opinions are often heard the loudest and in this case, it comes with social media hashtags like #horseracingkills and very vocal views on horse racing itself.

Opinions were formed quicker than the six or seven seconds it took to deliver the news to the public that two horses had died following the race – and hence are opinions formed without any real background, research or knowledge.

And often those opinions are formed because we feel guilty.

Because many of the people being loud and vocal about horse racing still had a bet on Tuesday, despite a horse dying in the race last year.

They still went to a Melbourne Cup luncheon, had the afternoon off work or took part in an office sweep, despite the deaths of two young female jockeys last month.

And a lot of them will do it all again next year.

I’m no horse racing expert – I have very little knowledge of how the industry works on the inside, but I do know that somewhere in the midst of what happened on Tuesday, there is room for a sensible debate.

Unfortunately, those inside the industry know that the once-a-year punters with their once-ayear opinions will disappear in a week or two, and the industry will get back to normal, where races are held every four or five minutes in all parts of the country.

I don’t really think the wider public have any idea of how big the horse racing industry is.

It’s not just about a handful of meetings at Randwick and Rosehill a year.

It’s not just about the Cox Plate, the Melbourne Cup or the Caufield Cup. Racing runs all year round, all day long, and yes, incidents like what happened on Tuesday happen right throughout the year, though they remain rare in the big scheme of things.

Personally, there’s elements of racing I’ve never really understood.

I have no idea why it’s such a social drawcard; no idea why it attracts young men and women in their thousands, dressed to the nines, in every city of Australia.

Even the events on Tuesday will do nothing to stem the flow of social events at the races over the spring and into next year.

Racing insiders know that deep down, most 20-somethings at the race track don’t really care about the horses.

And there’s that guilt again – the realisation that we’re having fun at an animal’s expense.

It’s really up to experts in the animal welfare field to have the right and proper discussion about what’s right and wrong about horse racing.

I’m not talking about the extremist minority groups, but legitimate animal welfare organisations who can come to the table knowing that horse racing will never be stopped, but can perhaps be improved.

What happened on Tuesday was, at the end of the day, a freak accident. Unfortunately, our guilt will ensure we have trouble accepting that.

Residents also expressed concerns about the impact the development will have on the character of Mulgoa.

increase the footprint of Mulgoa village by about 30 per cent with their plans for Glenmore Park style intensive subdivision,” said Ms Harrold.

“The subdivision of the western precinct raises serious concerns for the environment as it will disrupt an important corridor preserved for koalas.

“The plan will also see acres and acres of endangered woodlands cleared.”

ver 65 residents gathered at Mulgoa Park and community hall last week to discuss plans for the subdivision of lands in the Fernhill Estate.

A number of key speakers addressed the meeting including Greens NSW MP and spokesperson for planning David Shoebridge, Mulgoa Landcare volunteer Lisa Harrold, Peter Harvey of the Mulgoa Progress Association and local historian Dr James Broadbent.

A development application currently with Penrith Council outlines plans for two subdivision sites; the eastern precinct of the site near the local school on Mulgoa Road and the western precinct accessed by Fairlight Road.

Mr Shoebridge raised concerns that a heritage provision allowing owners of heritage sites to engage in activities that raise money for building and property maintenance is being exploited.

“The Fernhill Estate has a rich history that needs to be protected and preserved for future generations,” Mr Shoebridge said.

“What is being proposed appears to be a clear abuse of heritage provisions

NSW Fair Trading Minister Matthew Mason-Cox is urging families to do regular window and balcony safety checks, after two children were recently admitted to NSW hospitals suffering injuries from window falls.

“Each year, around 50 children fall from windows or balconies in Australia,’’ Mr Mason-Cox said.

“Sadly, many children suffer serious injuries and some falls are fatal.

“Parents and carers should regularly check the windows and balconies in their home to ensure that the proper locks and security screens are in place and the structure is safe. Remember, a fly-screen isn’t child proof. It’s not a means of keeping the window safe.”

enrith Councillor John Thain has thrown his support behind a Parramatta event concept that provides help to the city’s homeless people.

Cr Thain attended Western Sydney Homeless Connect’s hub event on October 27, and said that the day was very successful in bringing together service providers and people experiencing homelessness.

“On the day there were services providing mammograms, dental check-ups, even help obtaining birth certificates as some people had never had any official means of identification,” he said.

“Having identification is critical as it means people can then access help such as Centrelink payments.

“I was very impressed because the event was not about service providers speaking with other service providers, but really about the services meeting the needs of the people.”

Other services available included job capacity assessments, information on TAFE and employment assistance.

Penrith City Council recently applied for Federal Government funding to hold

Rates left on hold Interest rates were again left on hold by the RBA on Tuesday, with local mortgage holders breathing a sigh of relief.

There continues to be speculation that rates will rise at some point in the next six months, after being held at 2.5 per cent for 15 consecutive months.

Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said the decision to leave the cash rate untouched was largely expected.

“According to the most recent Westpac Melbourne Institute Index, consumer sentiment rose by just 0.9 per cent in October,” Ms Darnbrough said.

“This is the eighth consecutive month that the Index has printed below 100, which means pessimists continue to outnumber optimists.”

Police snapshot Kingswood: Two charged after robbing restaurant

Werrington: Newsagency staff threatened during incident

Two men have been charged following the armed robbery of a restaurant in Kingswood and the attempted armed robbery of a newsagency in Cambridge Park. Just before 10pm on Tuesday, October 28, two men entered a Chinese restaurant on Manning Street, Kingswood, both armed with knives. The men, who had their faces covered, threatened staff and made off with cash. No one was injured.

About 6.20am on Thursday, October 30, two men, who had their faces concealed, walked into a newsagency on Oxford Street, Cambridge Park. One of the men was armed with a knife. The pair was confronted by a customer before leaving in a vehicle emptyhanded. Police from St Marys Local Area Command were contacted regarding both robberies and commenced an investigation.

As a result of their inquiries, officers arrested two men, aged 29 and 18, at a unit on Santley Crescent, Kingswood. The pair was subsequently charged with ‘robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon’.

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a newsagency at Werrington Downs last week. Just after 8am on Friday, October 31, a man wearing a balaclava entered the Dunheved Road newsagency armed with a pistol. The man threatened the two shop assistants and demanded money. The man left the shop with cash and was seen to get into a silver hatchback driven by another man in Charles Todd Crescent. No one was injured during the incident and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

A report is being prepared for the information of the Coroner concerning the death of a motorcyclist at Erskine Park. Emergency services were called to Lenore Lane about 4.10pm on Sunday, November 2, after a 22-year-old man was found seriously injured after coming off his bike. The man was treated at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital however he died a short time later. The man was from Minchinbury.

Cranebrook: Teen charged over break and enter Police have arrested a teenager over a break and enter incident earlier this year.

A break and enter occurred at a home in Goldmark Crescent, Cranebrook on August 28. This week a 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with aggravated break and enter and committing a serious indictable offence. He will face Penrith Local Court on November 25.

Cranebrook: Man and woman in trouble over police find A 31-year-old female and 32-year-old male have each been handed a Future Court Attendance Notice for the possession of a prohibited drug. Police were patrolling in Hickeys Lane at about 7pm on Friday, October 31, when they noticed the pair in a car and had reason to speak with them.

A search of the car revealed the pair had in their possession methamphetamine.

Anti-airport campaigner Jackie Kelly said that the Federal Government’s handling of this issue has been a disgrace. “I am not surprised that the Federal Government has given residents just six months to leave because that is typical of this Government who refuse to listen to the community and refuse to consult them,� she said. “The Federal Government is determined to rush this airport through and it’s the residents of Badgerys Creek and western Sydney who will pay the price.�

A spokesperson for Federal Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss said that Property Manager, Preston Rowe Paterson, recently contacted the occupants of the land at Badgerys Creek to “give them certainty about when the Government intends for the site to be vacant�. “Naturally, as part of the preparation of the Badgerys Creek site, tenants will need to vacate their rented premises,� the spokesperson said. “While most tenants are on periodic, month-to-month leases, tenants will be given at least six months’ notice to allow them and their families time to find accommodation that suits their needs. This is more than double the contractual requirement of between one and three months.�

Sad passing The University of Western Sydney has acknowledged the passing of Emeritus Chancellor, John Phillips, who passed away on Monday following a period of ill health.

Mr Phillips was a much respected and highly regarded member of the UWS family.

He was only the second Chancellor in the University’s 25-year history, serving in the role from January 1, 2001 until his retirement on December 31, 2010. “John’s exemplary leadership of the Board and his advocacy on behalf of UWS during those 10 years contributed significantly to the growth and development of the University that we know today,� UWS said in a statement released on Wednesday. “Outside UWS, John Phillips had a long and distinguished executive career spanning some 50 years. “He held numerous highly influential appointments within the Australian business and finance sectors, including Chairman of the Foreign Investment Review Board and Deputy Governor and Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia.� “One of John’s enduring legacies will be his lifelong dedication and service to Australian public life and, of course, UWS was the beneficiary for many years of this commitment to serve the Australian community. For this we owe him a debt of gratitude and appreciation. “As Chancellor, John Phillips contributed knowledge, experience, values and reputation – contributions that were invaluable to UWS’s development.�

t lasted only a few minutes, but a freak storm last Saturday afternoon left a path of destruction that has stunned local residents.

Bringing with it fierce winds and torrential rain, the storm left thousands of homes and businesses without power for several hours and resulted in the local State Emergency Service receiving more

than 200 calls for help. Most of the jobs related to trees that had fallen onto properties, cars or across roadways.

In one of the more serious incidents, the roof of a medical centre on Bringelly Road at Kingswood was torn off during the ferocious storm. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the incident.

Hundreds of locals took to social media, primarily the Western Weekender’s Facebook page, to detail damage caused by the storm and the subsequent power outages.

t least three Penrith Councillors will push for a rescission motion at the next Council meeting to overturn approval of a prayer hall at Kemps Creek.

The motion is being headed by Cr Marcus Cornish, who says that there is an uprising of anger from the community who were unaware plans for the prayer hall had even been received by Council.

“I’ve spoken to residents who tell me they knew nothing of the development application and are upset with Council,” he said.

“People don’t feel like the mosque belongs in Penrith and that’s why I am putting in a rescission motion to have the decision overturned.

“I urge the people of Penrith to attend the council meetings to show their disapproval of this irreversible change to our way of life in Penrith.”

Cr Maurice Girotto has also thrown his support behind the rescission due to public demand.

“I voted for the prayer hall because there were only two complaints about traffic, which had been addressed in the development application,” he said.

“There was no reason for me to vote no

as it was a complying development.

“However, post-decision there has been so much attention and people have been writing to me telling me that they had never heard of the plans.

“I don’t have to agree or disagree with why they don’t want a mosque but if it’s the case that a majority of people don’t want it, I have to listen to them.

“This rescission motion is about letting people have their say.”

But Cr John Thain is fearful that the Council meeting will turn into chaos.

“I am happy for rescission motions to be put forward but I do have a problem with the lies and deceit,” he said.

“This is not a mosque, it’s a prayer hall in a rural shed, which is perfectly acceptable and compliant with the zonings for Kemps Creek.”

Cr Thain said that he was embarrassed by some of the language being used by people who are opposed to the prayer hall.

Some councillors have received abusive and inappropriate emails over the issue.

“I just really hope that when these matters are brought to Council that people behave themselves. The last thing I want to see is the need for security to be brought in. It’s not a good look for Penrith and it’s not what our city is about,” he said.

t’s one of the most basic marketing tools in the book, says Penrith Councillor Maurice Girotto – Penrith needs to announce itself to motorists passing through the area.

Cr Girotto has raised concerns that there are no welcoming signs announcing to motorists that they are entering the Penrith Local Government Area along our major roads, meaning the region is not getting full exposure to tourists and visitors.

“If I drive along the Northern Road I eventually reach a sign that says ‘Welcome to the Hawkesbury’. If I am coming down the mountains, just before I reach the Nepean River I see a sign that says ‘Welcome to Sydney’,” he said.

“How are people supposed to know they are visiting Penrith if there are not any signs?”

He says he would like to see double sided signs installed along all major road routes into Penrith saying ‘welcome to Penrith’ and ‘thanks for visiting Penrith’.

“Other councils are doing it and we should too,” he said.

Police are appealing for information after shots were fired in Kemps Creek.

About 2.30pm on Tuesday, a shooting incident occurred outside a home on Lee and Clark Road.

Police have been told a car pulled into the driveway and a man got out, firing shots at the 50-year-old male resident in the yard, before leaving the scene.

No one was injured and it is believed the men are known to each other.

About 5pm, police were called to the house and spoke to the resident. A crime scene was established with specialist forensic police in attendance.

Police executed a search warrant at a home on Luxford Road, Whalan.

Inquiries are continuing.

A Londonderry man has appeared in court charged with possession of an unregistered firearm, as well as hitting his partner with the weapon.

Police responded to reports of an argument at a unit in Londonderry Road, Londonderry, about 7.15pm on Tuesday.

A 37-year-old woman was located at the address with wounds to her face. An ambulance transported her to Nepean Hospital for treatment.

Police will allege the woman’s partner, a 46-year-old man, struck her with a firearm, as well as punching and hitting her.

It’s further alleged the firearm was unregistered. Police have charged the man with multiple offences.

Road closed

Castlereagh Road was closed during the busy peak period on Wednesday afternoon after heavy rain caused flooding near the railway bridge.

The second heavy storm in the space of a week (see page 10), Penrith residents placed around 17 calls for assistance with the State Emergency Service on Wednesday afternoon.

Penrithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World Gym was forced to close when the roof collapsed, while High Street copped intense rain and flooding.

The storm, which included light hail as well as thunder and lightning, caused significant problems on the rail network, with Western Line trains delayed during the afternoon peak period, causing extensive delays for commuters.

Lucky Penrith Minchinbury resident, Kerry Spoel, is all smiles after winning a $200 Visa Gift Card at the lucky Endeavour Foundation Recycled Clothing store in Penrith.

enrith Councillors have decided not to reinstate â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no Badgerys Creek airportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; messaging on Council stationery after a fiery debate at Council last week.

Last month, Cr Kevin Crameri raised the issue with his fellow councillors and asked that it be immediately reinstated.

At the Ordinary meeting on Monday, October 2, councillors voted to permanently have the messaging removed, despite Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position formerly being against an airport at Badgerys Creek. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the last two years we have had a creeping campaign for the airport and we have just been sitting on our hands watching it happen,â&#x20AC;? Cr Crameri said in exasperation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have allowed this campaign to go on for so long and now people think we actually want the darn thing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nobody knows anything about this airport and nobody is going to tell us, so I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know why we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t inform our residents that we are opposed to it.â&#x20AC;?

But Cr Greg Davies said that having the messaging reinstated would be costly.

Cr Kevin Crameri is tired of Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaction over Badgerys Creek airport â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d rather see that money go to something useful in the community,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Cr Tricia Hitchen and Cr Bernard Bratusa said that Council should hold off until more information on the airport is provided. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to wait for all the facts,â&#x20AC;? Cr Bratusa said.

total of 10 community organisations will share in $9,000 from Penrith Council after Cr Karen McKeown called for additional funding for applicants to the Community Assistance Program.

At the September 29 Council meeting, only 37 of 69 applications for grants of up to $1,200 through the Community Assistance Program were approved.

But an extra $3,000 from voted works from each of the three council wards has been allocated to projects that missed out on funding to help with their local projects.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;These community organisations are run by volunteers and operate on a shoestring budget so I felt it was necessary that Council support their projects,â&#x20AC;? Cr McKeown said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is one of the great aspects of being a councillor, the ability to give back.â&#x20AC;?

Just some of the additional projects being supported include a social night out for carers organised by the Australian Foundation for Disability.

his summer there will be a major crackdown on people who risk the lives of others by lighting fires on total fire ban days, with the NSW Government recently announcing the creation of a new criminal offence and higher fines.

According to the NSW Rural Fire Service, there were 25 total fire ban days enforced in 2013. There were 85 scrub and grass fires responded to on those days in the Cumberland district, which includes Penrith.

In that same period there were 24 fires in the Blue Mountains and 46 in the Hawkesbury. Incredibly, on October 10, fire crews battled 15 fires in the Penrith region.

Emergency Services Minister and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said tough new penalties will empower the police and the RFS to bring those who deliberately and recklessly disrespect total fire ban warnings before the courts.

“Under these strong new measures, offenders can be prosecuted under a new offence and face a fine of up to $132,000 and/or seven years jail time if they deliberately light or allow a fire to escape their property on a total fire ban day,” Mr Ayres said.

A fire in Castlereagh last year A jury can still find someone guilty of the existing offence, which carries serious penalties of up to $110,000 and up to five years jail time, if they think the person did not have enough warning that a total fire ban was in place.

“We are seeing a lot of people ignore warnings and conducting burns on their own properties with complete disregard for total fire bans,” Mr Ayres added.

“Out of control fires have a devastating impact on life, property and communities. It’s only right that those who cause this devastation should have the book thrown at them.”

Other changes will streamline fire permit requirements and ensure those who throw lit cigarettes, matches or other ‘fire objects’ from a vehicle will be held accountable, not just the registered owner of the car.

Students show their potential Bullying, homelessness, helping the elderly and defining beauty – these were just some of the interesting topics that local high school students chose to explore through the Maxx Potential Showcase Expo held at Penrith RSL on Monday afternoon.

For the past 22 weeks, students from six high schools were paired up with Penrith’s business leaders and challenged to complete a personal project as well as a community based project.

Bethany Hidalgo The business leaders, who acted as mentors for the students, were also given coaching by Maxx Potential in how to manage the students and help them achieve their goals.

The Expo was a culmination of the students’ hard work and received much praise from the RSL, mentors, family and friends who attended.

Bethany Hidalgo of Kingswood High School completed a community project on bullying.

“Bullying is an issue that happens at every school and so I ran a class for Year 7 students teaching them how to deal with being bullied and how to stop it from happening,” she said.

Sabrina La Cioppa said that by participating in the Maxx Potential Showcase she discovered that her passion is to help teach children with disabilities.

“For my project I combined my passion for art with my interest in helping children with disabilities,” she said.

“It’s been really great for me as I am going into Year 12 and now I know what I want to do.”

Mentors such as the Weekender’s own Simon Gould also found the experience rewarding. Mr Gould worked with Trent Jeske from St Marys Senior High School on his personal project on weight loss and his community project of reaching out to the elderly.

“Everything Trent did was his own idea and I acted as a sounding board,” Mr Gould explained.

“The expectations placed on these students are very high and they have all exceeded in their projects.

“It was a great opportunity to be involved with the community and give back to students such as Trent, who was an absolute pleasure to mentor.”

The project will be running again next year and Maxx Potential will be on the look out for new mentors and students to take part.

he Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) has been recognised as a leader in developing business relationships at the recent Economic Development Australia awards held in Darwin.

The PBA’s Penrith Health and Education Precinct project has been many years in the making and was singled out at the awards night as an industry leading project, expected to create some 13,000 local jobs through forming partnerships between local universities, businesses, all levels of government and business organisations.

PBA Chairman Paul Brennan said he was very pleased that PBA’s efforts had been praised.

“By laying the foundations for the Penrith Health and Education precinct we created an environment where people and businesses, who would normally be in competition with one another, could work together on common goals for the precinct,” he said.

“There were items such as a new car park for the Nepean Hospital, a new mental health ward, hospital extensions and a business incubator discussed.

“Years later and most of this wish list has been achieved.”

PBA Board member Penrith Councillor Jim Aitken said the award was a vote of confidence in the precinct and the PBA itself.

“This award reaffirms that Council’s decision to set up an independent organisation advocating for economic development way back in 2007-08 was the right decision,” he said.

The PBA celebrates its win last week Chairman of Economic Development Australia, Steve Chapple, congratulated the PBA on its submission.

“The awards, which are now in their seventh year, highlighted a myriad of innovative examples of work being undertaken across Australia in the field of economic development and resulted in the judges being left with some difficult decisions,” he said.

But the award does not signal the end of the PBA’s work in the health and education precinct.

Mr Brennan said that the PBA is still striving to find funding for a medical research institute.

“Nepean Hospital is the only teaching hospital without its own research institute and we have come close many times to securing funding for this facility,” he said.

“With the state election coming up, we are again taking a strong platform to both political parties and we have plans to host a debate between Premier Mike Baird and Opposition Leader John Robertson,” Mr Brennan added.

ast week saw the Nepean Food Services Operations Manager Ditte Kozak, management committee and team proudly honour the support of its dedicated volunteers with the presentation of five, 10 and 20 year service awards at its Annual General Meeting in Regentville.

Nepean Food Services is a social support network for frail older people, people with disabilities and people with special needs, offering Luncheon Clubs, dinner vouchers and outings to its clientele.

The non-profit incorporated organisation operates out of two facilities, one at Penrith and one at Warragamba.

The organisation prides itself on building trusted relationships with its regular clientele through the support of its volunteers.

Mayor Ross Fowler joins volunteers of Nepean Food Services Penrith Mayor, Cr Ross Fowler, attended the presentation.

“Council appreciates and values the role Nepean Food Services plays in helping many of our residents to stay in their own homes and maintain a level of independence and dignity,” Cr Fowler said.

The volunteers are loyal and friendly, according to Cr Fowler.

“We certainly have a caring community here in Penrith and I’d like to thank the service’s staff and dedicated volunteers for giving their time so generously to this vital service,” he said.

Development complied Let’s be clear, the DA was for a prayer hall not a mosque (Mosque gets go-ahead, Western Weekender October 31). A mosque would have had different assessment by planning, simply by the bulk and scale along with the footprint. It is a converted shed that blends in with every other shed in Kemps Creek – it fits the rural area. It is a complying development passed with restrictions by Council. To refuse this DA would have landed it in the Land and Environment Court with the following result: a significant cost to ratepayers in defending the refusal and losing the court case to the applicant.

There were lack of grounds for refusal. The court would most likely lift the restrictions imposed

by Council and at the same time reprimand Penrith City Council for the refusal simply because it was a place of worship, because it is permitted in the zone and it was a fully compliant development.

These are the only reasons we may refuse, if it’s not permitted in the zoning or it’s not compliant. In regards to the rescission motion that is now before Council, I would

have thought an 11-2 vote in favour was fairly comprehensive for a complying DA. I would understand if the vote was close and some Councillors were away, that a recession may reverse the vote. But only two Councillors were absent. I am disappointed that it is continually referred to as an application for a mosque both by the media and by Councillor Cornish. I hope that common sense prevails and the meeting is conducted with views put respectfully in regards to both sides of the argument. However we have a duty to the Local Government Act to deal with DAs in regards to the planning regulations. Those that choose to make representations need to make it clear the objections are based on those planning regulations. We cannot nor should refuse a complying DA simply because it is a place of worship no matter what religion.

The Penrith “way of life” North Ward Penrith City Councillor Marcus Cornish believes that the building of mosques in the Penrith area will be an irreversible change to the fabric of life in Penrith. Perhaps he is suggesting that increased traffic flow towards Kemps Creek might be the problem? Or that Penrith is already overcrowded with places of religious worship? Australia is having growing pains in the form of ongoing cultural tension between Islamic and Anglo Australians. It’s delusional to think that inaction and idealism is an effective way of dealing with such a divisive challenge, but neither is outcasting and all but completely oppressing such a large part of our community.

Penrith desperately needs real and open dialogue on some of the complex challenges we face TOGETHER as a community. What we don’t need is the perpetuation of hate, intolerance and bigotry.

Islam doesn’t threaten Penrith, in fact the diversity it brings strengthens it. What threatens Penrith is Councillor Cornish’s insensitive words, which divide and continues to stir intolerance.

Councillor Cornish seems to have Islam confused with religious, ideological and political extremism, which along with his generalisations, actually threaten our community. Consider for a moment if Councillor Cornish was opposing the construction of a Church? He has crossed the line between just representation and actively oppressing those within our community. Councillor

Cornish is no doubt a good person and I have seen him stand up for Penrith on some very important matters such as the Fernhill development, however he has failed to consider the diversity of the Penrith community and it’s culture as it is now in 2014. Lastly as a resident I also ask Councillor Cornish to remember: “Hate begets hate”. And hate is not part of the Penrith way of life.

The Penrith Health and Education precinct continues to attract medical specialists to the area and the latest wanting to set up shop is a lung and sleep specialist. Penrith Council has

received a development application to knock down the existing building at 28 Derby Street and build a new clinic in its place. In detail the proposed development will include the following elements: an administration and consulting building with the provision of four consulting rooms and ancillary offices, staff meeting room, reception/waiting area and amenities; a sleep unit building with the provision of four sleep rooms, monitoring station, waiting area and associated amenities; and centrally located at-grade parking area with a total of 11 car parking spaces that includes an accessible parking space.

Council’s Road Safety Program is conducting another child car seat checking day on Saturday, November 8. From 9am until 1pm authorised restraint fitters will be on hand in Council’s car park to show you how to correctly use a car seat for your child.

Approximately two thirds of car seats are not installed properly. Bookings are essential for this free event. Call 4732 7735 to book an inspection.

Council’s next meeting is on this coming Monday at 7pm.

Held at the University of Sydney’s Great Hall on Saturday, October 25, the Governor of NSW, David Hurley spoke very highly of the work of St John volunteers.

Mark Hutchings of St Marys South was named the Volunteer Trainer of the Year in recognition of his exceptional service and ability when instructing and promoting first aid to the community.

Annalise Klein of Glenmore Park was awarded the Edeline Jenkyn Trophy, which is given to the most outstanding male and female cadet in the state.

Kingswood’s Malcolm Towle received his First Bar to the Service Medal of the Order in recognition of his 17 years voluntary service to St John.

St John NSW Commissioner, Didier Moutia, said that the Annual Awards Ceremony is a premier event for the organisation whose core purpose is to empower people to help others in times of need.

day at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club to raise money for the Cancer Council.

With corporate sponsor packages still available, Mr Tanti says he is hoping local businesses will jump on board and help the firm raise $25,000.

our young dancers from Colyton High School have been selected for the finals of dance competition ‘Fast + Fresh Dance’.

Now in its seventh year the competition showcases short, innovative works from dancers aged 21 years and under.

The group – which includes students Junior Maiki, Chevi Mulholland, Ellena Delinaoum and Leif Aquino – will compete at the event that runs from Monday, November 10 to Saturday, November 15 at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts

Centre in Penrith and the Riverside Theatres, Parramatta.

“I’m super, super proud of them,” said dance teacher Amy Stenberg.

“It’s a big thing for them to choreograph their own work as they’re only 14 and 15.”

The competition features a range of dance styles including classical, krumping, contemporary and jazz.

The dancers will be judged by industry experts including choreographer Marko Panzic who has appeared on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.

Prizes include secondments with Bangarra Dance Theatre and Sydney Dance Company as well as free lessons.

A video, ‘Help with Tenancy Problems’, and the fact sheet ‘Residential Tenancy Complaints’ have both been translated into Arabic, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

Cook book with a difference Author Kim McCosker to bring her quick meal secrets to Penrith on Monday @ktweed_

hen you are time-poor, low on cash and suffering from a lack of inspiration, cooking for the family can be something that many local people dread.

Author Kim McCosker and her team have developed a range of ‘4 Ingredient’ cook books over the years, sharing hundreds of recipes that only need four ingredients and as a result, alleviated the stress of cooking for many parents.

To celebrate the release of her newest cook book Cook 4 a Cure, Ms McCosker is coming to Penrith Library for a free event on Monday, November 10, from midday to 1pm.

She’ll be meeting local residents, who will have the opportunity to purchase the new book, and will talk on how ‘4 Ingredients’ came about, about her new book and will also share some easy kitchen tips and recipes.

There will also be sample dishes from Cook 4 a Cure for local residents to try.

The book features a collaboration of over 60 recipes, including herbed ricotta pie, mint and raspberry soft serve, fig bars and peanut butter balls, with each using just four ingredients or less.

“Cook 4 a Cure brings everyday, simple recipes from healthy salads and pies, to juices, cakes and jams,” Ms McCosker said.

The team at ‘4 Ingredients’ are aiming to raise $100,000 for the foundation from sales of Cook 4 a Cure.

A community fun day will celebrate the official launch of the upgraded Callisto Reserve, which is frequently used by the school students and young families.

Upgrading the playground was driven by students from Cranebrook High’s Student Representative Council, who in partnership with Council, have also organised the community fun day to celebrate.

Recently I phoned a day spa to make an enquiry about an appointment. What struck me about the staff member I was speaking to, was that she personified my expectations of a day spa. She spoke clearly and her manner was professional.

She quickly established herself as knowledgeable about the services available by providing recommendations and being able to answer all my queries. The tone of voice she used was calming, and she established confidence that everything was being taken care of.

Anyone who has been to a day spa will know that a primary element is the overall ‘experience’ and atmosphere. A relaxed, pampering environment is essential for achieving that experience. Although my appointment is a couple of months away, the staff member I spoke began that process by exhibiting the same qualities and elements that will be evident when I am there in person.

Does this occur in your business? Is the first contact customers have with your business (over the phone, on your website or in person) a reflection of what they can expect? Are you projecting the image or

‘look’ that encompasses your business?

This first contact is vital. If your marketing efforts have resulted in someone contacting you, it is imperative that you build on that. Here are some ways to make your business stand out: Product: Can you offer a product that is unique or even trendy? Or, can you extend a product and offer a valuable service to make the product more useful to the customer?

Service: Same goes for a service. This can be the packaging of a service as a product. Consulting is often delivered on an hourly basis. Packaging a consulting job based on an outcome, with defined deliverables and fixed package price is a very effective way to differentiate a service offering.

Offer: Can you become known by an offer you make? For example, an accountant that offers his tax preparation clients a 100 per cent refund on their preparation fee when they refer four new clients?

Unique habit: What about a service

provider having a partnership with a car detailer when their clients come in for their annual review. It’s all about adding a unique touch.

Guarantee: This one frightens some people but, you probably guarantee your work anyway, you just don’t say so. Come out and boldly announce that you guarantee results and watch what happens!

Against the competition: Many times you can create your category niche by looking for holes in the offerings of your competitors. If everyone in an industry fails to address a certain problem, boldly grab on to solving that problem and use your competition as the point of difference.

Once you find your chosen strategy or combination of strategies to differentiate your business, all of your advertising and promotion should be centred around that difference.

Commit to it, stay at it and resist the temptation to wander off in the next new direction. Building a brand takes time and patience.

The result is what differentiates the winners from the losers in business.

Toyota is the most popular brand for online searches among people looking to buy new and used vehicles, according to a new report.

More people stipulated Toyota as their brand of choice ahead of any other brand when searching for vehicles at leading consumer website CarsGuide.com.au.

Toyota vehicles also claimed five of the top 10 online searches, based on internal Google analytics figures released by the site for the three months to the end of September.

enrith basketball sensation Tahlia Tupaea could well be on her way to yet another World Championships after she was chosen in the U19 Australian Gems side for the upcoming FIBA Oceania Series.

Fresh from captaining the Australian Sapphires at this year’s FIBA U17 Women’s World Championships, Tupaea was chosen in the Australian Gems side for the second straight year – proving her skills are well beyond her years.

However, before next year’s FIBA U19 World Championships for Women gets underway, Tupaea and her Aussie teammates will need to qualify for the tournament first by finishing on top at next month’s FIBA Oceania Series in Suva, Fiji.

With just one spot up for grabs among 10 Oceania teams competing including New Zealand, Samoa, Guam, Tahiti and Fiji, Australia will need to be at their absolute best during the tournament to qualify.

Local artistic gymnast Chris Bunton isn’t just winning gold medals for himself, he’s winning them for the group of young kids he teaches every week.

The 22-year-old, who was born with Down Syndrome, is one of the best artistic gymnasts in the country who, twice a week, passes on his knowledge to a group of primary school aged kids at YMCA Penrith.

“I love sharing my knowledge and mentoring kids,” Bunton said.

“It’s really rewarding because the kids want to do the sport and I’m happy to teach them the skills they need to know.”

Recently, the St Clair resident returned from the Special Olympics National Games in Melbourne where he competed against some of the top intellectually disabled athletes in the country.

ulgoa resident Jordana Keaton picked up her first set of junior golf clubs when she was just eight-years-old and began playing in 18-hole competitions when she was 10.

Now, some 13 years later, 21-year-old Keaton has a different set of golf clubs but that same burning passion for the sport as when she first started. She is now on the verge of turning that very passion into a full-time profession.

Contrary to popular belief, many golfers who want to become professionals and start earning money on the lucrative pro circuit have to undertake and complete a three-year PGA Traineeship Program.

For the past three years, Keaton has been doing just that where, on a weekly basis, she has to study, work full-time and play golf under an average in order to graduate as a professional.

“Some people think, in order to become a professional, you just have to play golf but there is way more to it,” Keaton told the Weekender.

“I play a tournament every Monday, I

work 38 hours over four days at Leonay Golf Club, study and I conduct my own lessons with men, women and juniors.

“I could’ve just turned pro like some golfers do but I wouldn’t have any qualifications by the end of it. Soon I’ll have a sports diploma, business diploma, coaching diploma, and will have the option to teach, run a golf shop or play for a living.”

Despite the gruelling and demanding workload, Keaton said she wouldn’t have it any other way and is looking forward to graduating on December 31 so she can finally put her talents to the test on the pro circuit.

“I am going to try the ladies events next year for experience and exposure. I’m not looking to get much out of it to begin with but in the future, definitely,” she said.

“If it doesn’t work out, teaching is my back-up plan.”

What the future holds for Keaton remains to be seen but if her attitude and determination is anything to go by, we’ll be seeing a lot more of this young local talent for many years to come.

“My aim is to make the Australian Open in February where I’ll be up against the big names of the sport like Karrie Webb,” Keaton said.

It’s reasonable to suggest there’s only one thing worth writing about this week, and it has a fair bit to do with Ante Covic’s right hand.

It’s fair to suggest there’s plenty to smile about this week, and it has a fair bit to do with Tony Popovic’s grand plan.

From the most rabid Wanderers supporter, to the most casual of sporting fan who doesn’t really care too much about the A-League, this achievement has received close to the recognition it deserves.

Driving home after the game on Sunday morning, it was warming to hear every radio bulletin lead with the news from Saudi Arabia. News programs that night had heavy coverage. It was all over the paper the next day.

Just 31 months after the club was conceived.

How quickly it has grown, and already, it is a shining example to the rest of the code in this country that anything is possible.

For mine, three things stand out to explain the enormity of what the Wanderers overcame.

Firstly, winning through the knockout stages during an off-season, when the opposition were well into their season and battle hardened.

Secondly, having to change over a half-dozen players in the midst of the campaign, including the loss of the genius general, Shinji Ono. Again, this goes back to the planning of Popovic. He saw this coming, and brought in a number of players early, like Antony Golec, who set up the goal that decided the final.

And thirdly, winning this whole thing under a salary cap system, while the rest of the competition could spend and buy who and what they liked at a whim. It’s like a fighter winning 14 fights with one hand tied behind his back. Still, maybe it helped. Maybe it took away any hint of complacency in preparation, the thought of excuses when it wasn’t going to plan.

I wrote a few weeks ago if the Wanderers won the ACL title, it would surpass South Sydney and Hawthorn as the sporting story of 2014.

Popular demand will probably have those, but the sheer enormity of what the

Ante Covic Wanderers have overcome, in my opinion, outweighs a first premiership in 43 years or a perfect grand final performance as underdogs.

Not that it really matters. There’s no use getting caught up in comparisons. This win was a one of a kind and always will be.

One day, there’ll be a damn good book written about this victory. The only issue will be convincing the publisher that it doesn’t belong in the fiction section. It happened. It really, actually happened.

Ante Covic is the goal keeper for the Western Sydney Wanderers and answers five big questions every Friday in the Western Weekender

Congratulations on the AFC Champions League win over Al-Hilal, when this competition began in February did you ever expect an outcome like this?

We’re over the moon! It’s an achievement that sort of takes some time to sink in due to the magnitude of it. It was an awesome night and one that none of us will ever forget. When we started all this back in February, we set it as a goal to make it to the final. It was never going to be easy and we knew it would be very hard work.

When we got to the final we realised all the hard work and belief paid off and, at the moment, I couldn’t be prouder.

In terms of personal performance, you had some sensational saves, was that the game of your career?

I think since the pre-season started, when we began the AFC Champions League quarter finals, I’ve been in really good form. The save I made in the 85th minute, that pretty much sealed the deal for us. For me, it was personal satisfaction and acknowledgement of a long career, hard work and I’ve been over the moon

with the performances I’ve pulled out.

There’s no better stage than doing it at a final in a tournament like that.

What did the team do to celebrate after the game?

We didn’t do too much after the game to be honest, we were stuck in Saudi Arabia where there’s not that much to do. If you’re going to win a final I suppose it’s not the most ideal place to win something (laughs). However, we got to go to the Australian embassy where we enjoyed a few beers in peace and quiet. We went to the embassy straight after the game in our playing gear because we had to arrive there before 12.30am, otherwise we weren’t allowed in.

The arrival at Sydney Airport on Monday night with thousands of fans welcoming you home, what was that like to witness?

That was awesome! We expected a lot of people to be there because after we beat Guangzhou we had a few hundred at the airport, so we had feeling after the final a lot of people would show up. We knew it

would be big but when you walk out and actually see it, it was absolutely huge. We got to celebrate the win with our fans and they enjoyed it just as much as we did on the field.

Mindsets have to return to the A-League now, how hard will it be to adjust with so much going on?

Going to New Zealand this week and Perth next week are not the most ideal games you want to be coming into after all the travel we’ve been doing so far but we have to adjust. We haven’t had the best start to the A-League, we’re on an extreme high at the moment but there’s still a job to do. We just have to start putting those performances, which fans saw over the past few weekends, on the field in the A-League.

And without basic movement skills children are far less likely to participate in sports or play with their friends, have lower fitness levels and are more prone to being overweight or obese.

But a lack of basic movement skills is not only affecting the physical health of our children, it can also have a lasting impact on their emotional wellbeing and academic performance.

Gross motor activities stimulate the basic foundations of physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.

The skills learned through practising these actions are required for school readiness and inherently develop fine motor skills which are a precursor for literacy, numeracy and activities of daily living such as independent dressing and toileting.

Unfortunately, in Australia today many children are not being given the chance to adequately acquire these motor skills,with statistics showing that the average child spends far less than the recommended 60 minutes per day exercising anda staggering 32.5 hours each week in front of the television.

nother chapter was written in the Western Sydney Wanderers book of fairytales last Sunday morning when the small club with a big heart took out Asia’s biggest prize.

Beginning as major longshots when the AFC Champions League tournament got underway in February, the Wanderers stunned the football world on Sunday by becoming the first Australian club to win the prestigious title.

Needing only a win or draw to claim the AFC Champions League trophy, the Wanderers were out on their feet during the second leg of the final at King Fahd International Stadium with opponents Al-Hilal determined to not disappoint their 65,000 supporters.

However an amazing performance by goalkeeper Ante Covic for the second straight week saw the Wanderers record their ninth clean sheet of the campaign and secure the 1-0 aggregate victory.

“It was everything you’d expect from a final, it was difficult,” Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said.
