disqualified driver who smashed his car into a truck while trying to evade police in St Clair on Tuesday was on the run for more than 24 hours before finally being

arrested.

The 19-year-old man from Emerton was the driver of a white Holden Commodore that led police on a short pursuit along Bennett Road at about 10.25am on Tuesday before later being involved in a head-on collision with a truck.

Police were patrolling the area when they indicated for the driver to stop the vehicle, so that they could speak to him about his manner of driving.

“The vehicle allegedly failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit was self-terminated by police moments later due to the alleged excessive speed of the vehicle,” a police spokesperson said.

Not long after the high-speed pursuit was called off, police were approached by a member of the public who reported that the same vehicle had been involved in a crash.

The truck driver was not injured in the incident and the driver of the car was well enough to let himself out of the vehicle and leave the scene.

“The driver of the Holden ran from the scene with police conducting a search of the area with the assistance of the dog squad and the police helicopter,” the spokesperson said.

At about 11.40am on Wednesday, St Marys police officers attended an address in Ropes Crossing where they arrested the 19-year-old.

He was treated by paramedics for minor injuries, and charged with a range of offences including Skye’s Law. He was due in court yesterday.

Shock drug find in Penrith CBD Investigation continues after hydroponic set-up discovered in abandoned building @ktweed_

he keen eye of a local real estate agent led to the discovery of a commercial hydroponic set-up in a seemingly abandoned building in Penrith’s CBD last week.

At about 6am on Thursday, September 25, police were called to a commercial premises on Henry Street, following reports that there were a number of cannabis plants inside.

Upon arrival, police located 467 cannabis plants in a set-up spanning across seven rooms.

Police on the scene said that it appeared to be in the early stages of set-up, having been there for several weeks, and that while there were hundreds of cannabis plants growing, there was space in the warehouse for thousands.

“It was an extremely sophisticated and well set up system,” said Detective Sergeant, Andrew Clarke.

Investigators also found a commercial grade air filtration system, a professionally diverted mains electrical system and a lighting set-up.

The Weekender has been told that the site was leased to an unknown group or person by the owner directly.

It was September 24 that Penrith PRD Commercial’s Matt Neale was alerted to something strange going on in the building, which is located beneath Aldi.

He told the Weekender that he went to the property on Wednesday afternoon in the lead-up to a meeting with a nearby client that was planning on carrying out extensions that may affect the warehouse.

He made his way into the building, after noticing most of the entry points were padlocked, and found a number of people inside working on an electrical system.

After a short exchange he left immediately with “a bad feeling”.

“I rang up the owner on Wednesday night and told him that something wasn’t right. I suggested he organise to get security down there because I didn’t want to go back there without some assistance,” Mr Neale said.

Police said that security arrived on Thursday morning to change the locks and uncovered the hydroponics lab before contacting police.

“Tenants don’t often lock themselves in to do a fit out. If you’ve got a car park, you don’t put a wall across it, it is there for your cars. It just wasn’t right,” Mr Neale said.

Trees cause plenty of pain for residents CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

racked walls, lifting floors and broken plumbing are all issues that the residents of Campton Avenue in Cambridge Park are dealing with.

The root cause? The invasive root system of neighbouring trees that were planted

by Penrith Council along the back of Cambridge Park High School many years ago.

Anissa Weir’s home backs onto the school and she says the trees have been a major problem for her and her neighbours for a number of years.

“The roots of the trees are in the plumbing and pipes. We have had cameras down the pipes to confirm the roots are there and they are definitely causing problems,” Ms Weir said.

“We also have cracking in our garage floor now and there are roots visible in our backyard.

“I have contacted the school about the trees as well as the Department of Education but no-one wants to address the issue.”

Ms Weir said she had been told to pay for an arborist’s report on the origin of the tree roots, but she says that would cost about $1,000 and that her family doesn’t

have the money to pay for the report let alone fix the piping problems.

“The trees don’t perform any function, so I don’t see why they cannot be cut down,” she said.

Next door and Sunney Doneo says he also experiences issues with the school’s trees.

“They are so tall and I know that one has fallen down in the past and created a lot of damage,” he said.

“The roots are in the sewerage system and when one neighbour has an issue we all start having issues.

“We haven’t experienced any cracking yet but I am afraid that it will only be a matter of time before the roots spread and create damage here.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Education and Training said that there are no plans to remove the trees, despite residents’ concerns.

“The trees were planted by the local council many years ago,” the spokesperson said.

“The closest tree is five metres from the fence line.”

Penrith Councillor Prue Car has called on Council staff to try to resolve the issue.

“It may be possible for Council to play an intermediary role so that the school and the residents can find a solution that all are happy with,” she said.

There is a general calm surrounding Penrith’s departure from the NRL competition a week earlier than we all would have liked.

Perhaps that’s because the Panthers not only exceeded expectations this year, but have a squad that will learn from the experience and will be largely unchanged in 2015.

The Panthers found themselves a little out of their depth against the Bulldogs last weekend, not necessarily because of the quality of the opposition but moreso the occasion itself.

The side will learn from that and the pain of losing a Preliminary Final will sit with them during the off-season and spur on what will hopefully be a successful follow-up season.

Getting to the Grand Final is not easy, just ask South Sydney who fell at two previous Preliminary Finals before finally beating the Roosters last weekend to qualify for the big dance.

To the 2014 Panthers, including the players, coaching staff and officials, I can only say one thing: thank you.

As a long-suffering Panthers fan, the 2014 journey was fun, exciting and successful.

A top four finish, some amazing victories (none better than the 19-18 toppling of the Roosters in week one of the finals) and the unearthing of some remarkable talent were the highlights of a season to remember.

More than that, for the first time in a long time, we enter an off-season with legitimate expectation of what will happen next year.

In 2015, players like Matt Moylan, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Bryce Cartwright have the potential to go from rising stars to legitimate superstars of the game.

Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace may actually get a full season with each other and will form what will be one of the most feared halves combinations in the game.

The 2014 journey was fun, exciting & successful

yaro will all be even better next season, part of a Penrith forward pack that will have an incredible amount of depth.

I have no doubt in saying that the Penrith Panthers should be among the top four premiership contenders in 2015.

I believe the Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Eels and Broncos will all have plenty to offer, while teams like the Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, Roosters and Storm have perhaps come to the end of dominant eras. That’s not to say they won’t be competitive, but they’ll come back to the pack a little, providing for what could be one of the most open competitions in decades.

One thing is for sure – Penrith won’t be called pretenders in 2015 and they certainly won’t be flying under the radar any time soon.

Congratulations goes to Ivan Cleary on winning the Coach of the Year at the Dally M Awards on Monday evening, a well-deserved honour. What Cleary has done with the ‘Mountain Misfits’ is to be commended.

It was also great to see Matt Moylan, Adam Docker and Josh Mansour rewarded for successful seasons by being named in the Kangaroos train-on squad on Monday.

And of course, congratulations to our NSW Cup team on their dominant Grand Final win over Newcastle last weekend.

The task now is to convert a successful season on the field into a successful business off it, and for that to happen, the ‘bandwagon’ fans who jumped onto the Penrith love at the end must stick around this time – no excuses.

Rugby league, and sport in general, is a roller coaster ride. You can’t win them all, and being one of the final four teams in the competition is far from a losing result.

Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war, and Penrith’s current war is far from over. Bring on 2015.

or too long Nepean Hospital has been without essential breastscreening equipment, which means that thousands of local women have had no choice but to travel all the way to Westmead Hospital for the service.

Health Minister, Jillian Skinner announced on Wednesday afternoon that $350,000 in funding would be allotted to Nepean Hospital to purchase mammography equipment.

“Breast screening is available in various places throughout this district, including a mobile facility, but for any further investigation and assessment [prior to a biopsy] patients were being told they would have to go to Westmead and for many, that is a big trip,” Ms Skinner said.

“The investment in this equipment is going to be very important. It is going to make a huge difference.”

The announcement has come after Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres and Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies approached Ms Skinner about the need.

A large number of local women had also signed a petition, campaigning for a machine of this kind to be purchased.

Concerns over fire aftermath Penrith Council worried about site of Kingswood fire earlier this year

enrith Council has raised concerns that the site of a large fire in Kingswood two months ago could have been contaminated after materials and chemicals combusted during the large blaze.

On August 1, a grassfire impacted on the property at 19 Copeland Street, Kingswood with Fire and Rescue NSW appliances battling the fire for some hours in hot and windy conditions.

The fire caused damage to plant, equipment, vehicles and other associated stored materials. One storage building on an adjoining tenancy to the west was also extensively damaged.

The main problems in the control of the fire were the amount of materials stored on site and an inability of Fire and Rescue NSW to access the fire.

Following the fire, Council officers met with the owner of the premises and conducted separate discussions with the tenant.

On two occasions in August Council officers inspected the premises and observed that the site had been used predominantly for the storage of materials including containers, drums, cars, trucks,

“Council Officers indicated they were concerned for possible land contamina-

tion as a result of the land use and the damage caused by the fire,” a Council spokesperson said.

“A Demolition Order has been served on

the owner of the premises to demolish the damaged storage building and a Clean-Up Notice under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 has been issued on the tenant directing them to provide details of any contaminants on the site.”

However, there have been delays to the clean-up process because proper procedures have not been followed.

A third site inspection by Council staff on September 17 revealed that 20 truckloads of materials had been removed from the site prior to a contamination report being completed.

“Unfortunately, the tenant started the work prior to obtaining the report on the contaminants,” the Council spokesperson said.

“They have been directed to concentrate on the hygienist report because this will guide them on the removal of the materials.

“Once this is received, a further notice will be issued for the tenant to clean up the site and carry out any remediation works, if necessary.

“It is estimated that a further six weeks is needed to clear the site of all stored materials. Should the hygienist report identify the need for remediation works, then a final clearance certificate will be required once the remediation is completed.”

Police snapshot Police believe robberies may be linked

After months of investigation, police have finally caught up with two men alleged to have been involved in the stabbing of a man in Colyton earlier this year. On the evening of Monday, May 12, a 25-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the neck while standing outside his vehicle parked on Shepherd Street. On Friday, September 19, a man was arrested at St Marys Police Station in relation to the incident. The man was charged with ‘wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’. He was granted conditional bail and will appear in Mt Druitt Local Court on Monday, October 20. On Tuesday, September 23, a second man was arrested at St Marys Police Station in relation to the incident. The 28-year-old man was charged with the same charge.

Police are investigating a spate of robberies in the area, which they believe could be linked. At about 8.30pm on September 25 a 44-year-old female was walking through the car park of Jordan Springs shopping centre when she was approached by a male. The unknown man stole her handbag before forcing her to the ground. The male offender fled on foot. The following day at about 7.15pm a 49-year-old female was near Boundary Road, Cranebrook, when she was attacked from behind. In a third similar incident, this time on September 27, at 9.30pm, a 42-year-old female was walking along the Northern Road at Cranebrook, when she was approached by a male from behind. He pushed her to the ground and stole her handbag.

Luddenham: Duo charged after drug discovery

Earlier this month, police began investigating reports of illegal drug activity in the Luddenham area. Following inquiries, at about 2.20pm on September 26, police executed a search warrant on Blaxland Avenue. It is alleged they located an amount of cannabis, methylamphetamine, liquid believed to be used in the manufacturing of illegal drugs, handcuffs, an air pistol, drug paraphernalia, a knuckle duster and mobile phones. A 23-year-old has been charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘possess weapon’, while the second man, a 24-year-old, has been charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’.

Police were called to Parker Street Reserve and Sporting Fields, on King Street, Penrith, at about 11.30pm on Saturday, September 27. There, police allegedly found a person driving a car on the fields. When they signalled the driver to stop, the driver allegedly continued until he crashed the vehicle into a fully marked police car. Police were able to arrest the driver, a 17-year-old from Werrington County. When he was taken back to Penrith Police Station for breath analysis, he was in the mid range.

In addition, it was found that the teenager was driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle. He was charged with five offences.

enrith City Council is hoping to thwart the area’s serious litter problem by bringing the ‘Hey Tosser’ campaign to Penrith.

Similar to the ‘No One Thinks Big Of You’ campaign launched in 2007 to discourage people from speeding, the ‘Hey Tosser’ campaign is all about calling out people who litter, causing them a little bit of embarrassment and creating a stigma around discarding rubbish.

“Council has a dedicated crew for litter removal but these staff could be spending time on other community services if they weren’t picking up after others,” said Penrith City Mayor, Ross Fowler.

“Over the past 12 months, Council has collected 45 tonnes of discarded litter from public spaces across the city. This is a sad and completely preventable statistic.”

Areas that will be targeted by campaign signage will be carefully chosen by Council, with data collected by their designated litter crews.

The statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (PFDP) commenced on Wednesday, but even before this, local fire crews were already busy battling blazes in local bush and grasslands.

On Monday, September 29, 17 Rural Fire Service firefighters fought a blaze in bushland off Fairlight Road, Mulgoa, extinguishing it quickly but not before it had burnt through four hectares of land.

The following day, fire crews responded to a grass fire in Luddenham, off Elizabeth Drive. Two other small fires in Jordan Springs and Emu Plains also required assistance from emergency crews.

vision plan for the Penrith Lakes Scheme is only months away from the public consultation stage according to Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, as rehabilitation works increase at the 1350ha site on the Nepean River.

Visiting the Castlereagh site on Tuesday afternoon with Mr Ayres, NSW Planning Minister Pru Goward said that one of the most important pieces of infrastructure for the Penrith Lakes Scheme is nearing completion.

Penrith Lakes Development Corporation has spent $11 million on a 420m weir that will absorb flood waters from the Nepean River to protect land and towns further downstream, as well as provide the Penrith Lakes with its unique man-made lakes.

“It’s very impressive – 420m and it will make an enormous difference to the capacity to be able to develop the Penrith Lakes site,” Ms Goward said.

“The weir does a couple of things; it feeds the lakes, it stops flooding downstream, and it is pivotal to turning this quarry site into a beautiful place to live.

“It’s an outstanding, probably world

class example of rehabilitation for a quarry complex.”

Penrith Lakes Development Corporation has already submitted development applications to Penrith City Council for the development of urban precincts on the site near Castlereagh Road.

Ms Goward said that Penrith Lakes will become a sought after urban area, given its proximity to the Blue Mountains and Nepean River, along with major projects like Badgerys Creek airport.

“We are very keen to see additional housing out here,” she said.

“We just need to make sure it is safe and that all the flood mitigation works are done before people start to develop the lakes as an urban area “This makes Lake Burley Griffin look like a bit of a pond. We do things big in western Sydney and this will be a signature for western Sydney.”

Mr Ayres said that public consultation on the future of the Penrith Lakes could begin before the end of the year.

“We still have a lot of work to do. We want to work with PLDC to make sure we have the appropriate structure and plans for the site. We want to engage with the community around how this site evolves,” he said.

“I have been working very closely with

Minister Goward to develop a vision plan and a discussion paper. We are hopeful that we will have that in the community domain by the end of the year.”

The weir itself is due to be completed by December 2014.

“Quarrying at the site is drawing to a close after nearly a century and the Scheme is moving quickly into the next

phase of its life,” a PLDC spokesperson said.

“Already major lakes and landforms have been created, land and waterways rehabilitated and iconic species have returned to the area.

“The next phase of the Scheme, urban development, has commenced with the rezoning process now underway.”

People with asthma are being warned to be extra prepared for the upcoming fire season.

Asthma Foundation NSW CEO Michele Goldman said the start of the bushfire danger period, combined with hot, dry, windy conditions prompted the caution.

“Wood smoke poses a serious threat to people with asthma because it can trigger a flare-up or even a potentially fatal attack, particularly if the person is

not managing their condition well,” Ms Goldman said.

“During this period it is absolutely vital that people keep taking their asthma medication.

“We are urging all people with asthma to carry their reliever medication at all times and continue to take their preventer medication regularly, as it can take some weeks to be fully effective.”

large group of local women took part in a safety and self defence workshop in Penrith this week, empowering themselves with knowledge and skills that may one day save their lives.

The workshop, run by Krav Maga Western Sydney and STAND training, saw many women turn up to the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre on Wednesday to not only learn skills and knowledge to help them deal with potentially dangerous situations but to also support White Ribbon Australia’s campaign to end violence against women.

The women heard from leading self defence experts, police and solicitors on the night.

“Violence against women is never a private issue. We are holding this event to help break the silence around violence, to raise awareness of the issue, as well as funds to support work to bring violence against women to an end,” said Jeff Phillips of Krav Maga Western Sydney, which runs self defence courses throughout the year.

The program is a hands-on training program beginning on Wednesday, October 8, where women are not only educated but are given the opportunity to use the skills they learn on real people, who are padded-up for protection.

“We cover all aspects of self defence, focusing on the types of incidents that women may encounter in day-to-day life.

It is more of a modern-world approach as opposed to traditional martial arts,” Mr Phillips said.

“We do a lot of role-play and act out scenarios that women may experience to help them get an idea of what it is really like. Many assaults that happen follow patterns. We help women to understand and recognise these patterns so that they can take precautions or act accordingly.”

Painful ‘pinch point’ fixed Roper Road bottleneck eased thanks to State Government funding

rustrated drivers were being forced to queue all the way back to Minchinbury from Colyton because of a ‘pinch point’ on Roper Road near the M4.

However, Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies visited Roper Road last Friday to announce that roadworks to widen the busy thoroughfare had been completed, making it easier for those travelling south to bypass the traffic turning onto the M4.

“Before I was elected in 2011, no-one paid any attention to the bottleneck on Roper Road,” Mrs Davies said.

“Traffic from Carlisle Avenue turning onto Roper Road would be queued all the way back to Minchinbury because Roper Road just after the roundabout intersection reduced from two lanes to a single lane.

“Traffic turning onto the M4 to head to the city would clog the road, all because a stretch of about 150m of additional laneway was missing.”

However, a second lane for traffic going south on Roper Road to St Clair has now been constructed through the NSW Government’s Pinch Points program.

Costing $1.5 million, there’s a new lane, new pedestrian crossing and a new bus stop. With an additional 150m of laneway, traffic turning onto the M4 is no longer blocking the roundabout.

“A new bus zone and pedestrian refuge has been built near Young Street and a no stopping zone installed on the southbound lanes from Carlisle Avenue to the M4 on ramp,” Mrs Davies added.

“This will improve safety by reducing the risk of rear end crashes from vehicles waiting to enter the motorway.”

Roads Minister Duncan Gay said fixing the bottleneck was common sense.

“We can spend billions on the big roads but it’s the smaller, million dollar projects that often make the most difference when it comes to reducing traffic congestion,” he said.

“We have received excellent feedback from drivers, who have been passing us by with big smiles and waves, which was pretty uncommon for a Roads Minister prior to 2011.”

He added that the upgrade of Roper Road would now benefit the hundreds of cars and heavy vehicles that use the thoroughfare every hour.

“It’s common sense to listen to the people who actually use these roads,” he said.

Western Sydney is leading the way Minister for Planning Pru Goward visited the Western Sydney Employment Lands in Erskine Park this week to see first hand the high end manufacturing businesses that have been attracted to the region.

Taking a tour of local company Dincel, which manufactures a plastic construction system used in residential and commercial projects, Minister Goward said she was very impressed with the innovation present in the region.

“The latest audit figures I released recently show that around 70 per cent of existing industrial land zoned for jobs is in western Sydney,” she said.

“Western Sydney is experiencing a renaissance in industrial development and jobs – driven by smart companies like Dincel.

“We want to attract innovative businesses that offer high technology manufacturing positions close to where people live.”

Dincel manufactures bricks made from a polymer of their own creation that, like Lego, can be snapped together to build homes and other buildings by pouring concrete over the top in roughly half the time normal construction methods would take. Founder, Burak Dincel, said that he moved to western Sydney to expand the company’s operations.

“We moved to Erskine Park so that we could have bigger premises and increase our share in the very competitive construction market,” he said.

“We are a world leader in this technology and have exported to markets all over the world, right here from western Sydney.”

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies was also present for the tour of the facility, and said that she was proud to see businesses like Dincel establishing their operations in the heart of western Sydney.

“I am very proud that companies such as Dincel are providing smart jobs for our local residents,” she said.

Searching for a home Fusion needs community’s help in finding a new base

t a time when their organisation is thriving, news that Fusion Western Sydney are to be forced to leave their perfect St Marys location did not come easily to staff.

The organisation, which provides youth and community development programs, has been located at the old St Marys Bowling Club in Carsons Lane since 2011, but the team recently were informed that their building is to be sold after their lease, which runs until 2016, is up.

It is not an option for the organisation to purchase the building, which the team renovated and transformed into a hub for the organisation after they first acquired the space.

With their only option being to move on, the organisation is reaching out to the community for assistance.

“Earlier this year the Fusion leadership received the disappointing news that the site of the Fusion Youth and Community Centre was going up for sale and as Fusion was not in a position to purchase, is now in the process of looking for a new home in the St Marys area to continue

delivery of our current programmes and services,” said Fusion Centre Manager Judy Tweeddale.

“At this point, Fusion has no alternative venues on the horizon and is keen to talk to anyone in the community who’d like to partner financially or in-kind to help move Fusion Western Sydney into the next stage of its journey.”

The current centre is home to the Fusion café, training kitchen, community garden, op shop, auditorium, meeting rooms, recording studio and green space.

enrith Councillors were up to their old tricks this week when debating whether Council should formulate a policy to regulate travelling circuses.

Greens Cr Michelle Tormey had called for a report on Council’s current stance on circuses, and when the report was delivered on Monday evening, it sparked plenty of debate.

“I would be happy if Councillors could support the development of a policy on circuses,” Cr Tormey said.

“We wouldn’t be the first Council to have such a policy. I also understand that the RSPCA deals with complaints about animal treatment and that the majority of circuses do meet animal guidelines, but there are also other issues such as the safety of spectators to consider.

“In 2001 [lion tamer] Geoff Lennon was bitten by a lion whilst performing in Penrith, so it can happen.”

According to Council, over the past 14 years there have been 14 applications for temporary circuses, including five on Council owned land.

Council’s Development Services Manager Paul Lemm said that in 50 years there had never been an issue from a compliance angle with travelling circuses.

Cr Mark Davies said that he did not want Penrith to become anti-circus and said that a policy would create unnecessary red tape.

“Animal welfare is important but I’m not into making policy for policy’s sake,” he said.

Cr Jim Aitken agreed.

“We need to stay out of people’s lives and stop trying to regulate everything,” he said.

But Crs John Thain, Greg Davies and Marcus Cornish agreed that developing a policy to be considered more thoroughly at a future Policy Review Committee Meeting would be worthwhile.

With a margin of just one vote, Councillors supported a new policy being drafted.

Thank you to stranger I would like to acknowledge and thank the kind, thoughtful and generous gentleman that picked up my garden seat from my kerbside collection, after asking my permission, repairing the seat and then returning the seat to my home. New South Wales is one of the states with the most to lose if the Federal Government slashes the national Renewable Energy Target (RET) following the recommendations of a review by former Caltex Chair Dick Warburton. Despite the review concluding that the RET was working effectively and that reducing the target would result

in higher prices to consumers, it still recommended slashing the target. If the Federal Government goes down this path, it will be much harder for mums, dads and small businesses to install solar power and solar hot water systems to help reduce their power bills. Not only that, but almost 2200 NSW solar jobs and hundreds of solar businesses would also be at risk if the policy is cut. Australians want a solar future, so Tony Abbott, let’s not blow it.

Local jobs lost My heart goes out to those workers of Crane Cooper Tubing and their families who face an uncertain future, but I remain optimistic about the new job opportunities being created in the economy (Western Weekender September 26). I am encouraged that the parent company, Fletcher Building, will support these workers by either redeploying redundant workers internally or support a transition to alternative employment. I have

received assurances from the Minister for Employment that the Commonwealth Government also has a range of support services available to workers, should they need them. Penrith remains an aspirational community and I am confident that our region will go from strength to strength.

The Magnetic Places Neighbourhood Renewal Grants Program was initiated in 2007-08 with the objective of enabling residents, community groups, artists and organisations to activate local places. Since inception, the program has funded 51 successful projects, each celebrating creativity, diversity and culture in the established neighbourhoods across the City. A total of 13 applications were received in the 2014-15 round of the Magnetic Places Grants Program.

The competitive assessment process resulted in nine applications being recommended by the assessment panel to Council for funding to a total of $48,000. These projects include the Colyton Kite project, Art in the Park at North St Marys and Kingswood, Westcare’s Cranebrook Family Fun Day, as well as for Shared Reading NSW’s Poetry in Public Spaces at North St Marys.

Council has an annual Community Assistance Program that makes small grants to non-profit organisations and community groups. The maximum grant available under the program is $1,200. A total of 69 Community Assistance Program Planned Component applications were received for 2014-15, requesting a total of $77,130.

Funded community groups include; an equipment upgrade for St Marys Scouts, craft equipment for a new women’s craft group at Penrith Baptist Church, help for the Cambridge Park Primary School Christmas Carols event, an excursion for the members of the Enosis Greek Seniors Group, microphone equipment for Fusion Western Sydney and a medical examination bed for Multiple Sclerosis Limited.

Council has been offered funding for the following two projects: 1. Biodiversity improvement works using Bush Regeneration principles at Ropes Creek, North St Marys (to continue and consolidate the 2012 works), Peppermint Reserve, Kingswood and Kanangra Reserve, Kingswood.

The Greater Sydney Local Land Services has offered Council funding of $17,100 for these works.

2. Funding for biodiversity improvement using local provenance revegetation principles at several sites within the LGA. Works will be undertaken at the following sites; Peppermint Reserve, Kingswood, Gow Park, Mulgoa, Lincoln Park at Cambridge Gardens, Werrington Lake and at the Nepean River near Russell Street, Emu Heights.

round 30 young women from across the local area were treated to a girls-only fun day last week to celebrate the success of local youth programs. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Spaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, organised by St Clair Youth and Neighbourhood Team (SCYNT) in conjunction with a number of local youth services, saw girls aged between 12 and 18 meet together on Thursday, September 25, for make-up lessons, a cooking class, photo shoots and craft activities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like this program because I get out of the house and get to have some â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;me timeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with my friends. The make-up class helped me learn how to put makeup on and the games are fun too,â&#x20AC;? Brooke Frohreich, 12, from Erskine Park said.

The event stemmed from three, separate six-week programs that were designed after consultation between youth workers and students at Erskine Park High School.

The group had over 15 young people attend each week and as a celebration of its success, the large get together held last week was organised. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is about the girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wellbeing. We want to help promote good self esteem and give them an opportunity to hang

They can build relationships, get to know the youth workers and get information,â&#x20AC;? said SCYNT youth worker, Monique Ready. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a good way for them to socialise and make new friends â&#x20AC;&#x201C; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to interact with different people from other organisations and meet other people from their area.â&#x20AC;?

The regular programs also offer support to the young people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is also a really good experience because when you need help the staff are always here for you,â&#x20AC;? said Melinda Dover, 12, Erskine Park.

But before you do, there are a number of changes on the horizon to recreational fishing in the Penrith area that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to be aware of.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said changes have been made following extensive consultation and feedback from thousands of recreational fishers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The NSW Government released a discussion paper with 43 proposals for recreational saltwater and freshwater fishing between May and August 2013, which resulted in 5,440 submissions and more than 30,000 comments,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These changes will apply to recreational saltwater and freshwater fishers from November 3, 2014.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Ayres added of the 16 changes, five include minor rule adjustments to streamline recreational fishing rules.

eeping up with current technologies is hard enough and when you lose your sight, like Colyton grandmother Patricia Ross, it gets close to impossible.

The 76-year-old felt as though she had lost her independence when she lost her sight to macular degeneration but now, thanks to training from Vision Australia

she can use the latest accessible technologies.

“I’m not totally blind, I have some vision in my right eye, but I can’t read, watch television or use a computer unless it is magnified,” Ms Ross said.

“When I had to stop driving, I was devastated. I couldn’t get myself to the gym or my clubs and I had to rely on my husband.

It was a very hard time for me.”

She thought that losing her vision meant that she would no longer be able to use the

n a celebration of women in business in western Sydney, Women With Altitude are encouraging businesswomen in the local area to enter the 2014 Altitude Awards.

The annual awards recognise women in all aspects of business, whether they are just starting out or have been working at it for years.

There are a range of categories that businesswomen can enter for free, by simply filling out a questionnaire form.

Women With Altitude founder, Andrea Turner-Boys said the awards are a great way to celebrate business success stories and also look towards the future.

“They are a platform on which we can celebrate where we have come from, as well as plan the direction we are heading, both professionally and personally,” she said.

The awards also encourage networking between local business people.

“It’s not about competing with each other – it’s about supporting one another, building on our business and celebrating our achievements,” Ms Turner-Boys said.

“Small business owners are always incredibly busy and focused on building

their business, often with limited support and encouragement.

“These awards are a way for them to connect with their peers and the small business community.”

Lisa Fava, owner of St Marys’ business Love at First Slice, took out the ‘Soaring Solo’ award at the Altitude Awards last year.

“Women With Altitude in general is a really good way to network with other women. Business can be pretty hard at times and it helps to be able to network with people who are in similar situations,” she said.

“With the awards themselves, obviously it is a good feeling to win, but when things are going tough it kind of instils in you that it is all worth it. It gives you motivation to keep going.”

Ms Fava said that the entire process, from entering to the award night, is rewarding and helped her to iron out her goals for the coming year.

Local business women are encouraged to nominate for an award this year, to recognise the amazing contribution that women make to the business community in the region.

The Leisure Pools Sydney and Southern NSW Sales and Distribution Centre in Emu Plains, which is a dealership responsible for selling and distributing Leisure Pools’ fibreglass pools across the Sydney region and the Illawarra, was officially opened on Friday, September 26.

special ‘Welcoming the Babies’ ceremony was held at Westfield Penrith last weekend to publicly celebrate the newest additions to the community.

Hosted by Lindsay MP Fiona Scott, more than 20 babies and their families attended the celebratory event.

“Welcoming the Babies provides a unique opportunity to publicly thank parents for their role in raising the newest members of our local community,” Ms Scott said.

“The birth of a baby is a special time and the welcoming ceremony means neighbours, friends and the extended family can share in the joy and celebration.

“I would like to thank Paul Stonebridge from Westfield Penrith for being a partner for this important event, Owen Rogers for his fantastic effort as MC, Erin from Muru Mittigar for her Welcome to Country, The Kitty Kats Cheer Squad and all of the other wonderful contributors on the day.”

“There are heaps of people that have cancer and I just want to help them,” she told the Weekender.

This year’s event is looking to be much bigger than the last, which means that the $7,209 the rally raised last year could be superseded by a much larger figure.

“At this point last year, six weeks out from the actual event, we had five cars registered and ended up with 38 in total.

This year we already have 25 registered and I would say we’ll get another 30,” said mum, Amanda, who is a cancer survivor and a former patient of the centre herself.

The majority of last year’s participants have pledged to take part again this year.

“They loved the fact that it was something that the whole family could do and they said it was fun trying to decipher clues,” Amanda said.

Brooke Jones is running a special car rally for the second straight year ore than 50 car loads of local residents are expected to take part in the second annual Brooke’s Car Rally, a unique fundraiser founded by a local nine-year-old.

At just seven, Brooke Jones, with the help of her family, came up with the concept of a large-scale scavenger hunt, played out across Penrith.

This year on Sunday, November 9, families and groups will meet in their vehicles at the Penrith Panthers Car Park from 9am, where they will be handed a set of directions and clues that should lead them to a secret finish location somewhere in the local area.

The event sounds like it is all fun and games but it is also for a good cause; to raise money for the Nepean Cancer Care Centre.

Conscientious Brooke decided on her own that she wanted to raise funds for cancer, and her motivation is simple.

The tricky world of social media in business

Most women starting a new business are full of ideas (which is great) and passion (even better)! But it can be easy to get caught up in the ‘fantastic idea’ and make mistakes that can be easily avoided. So here are some tips for starting out: Take time to test: You absolutely need to go with your ‘gut feeling’ when starting a business. But if you do not take the time to test and research, you are likely to fail (and fail quickly). Talk to experts and people who have been in business for more than five years. Work out who your target market is and see what they think of your idea. You might receive feedback that you did not anticipate and may find you have to do some more work before you launch. That does not mean you should give up! The product or service you launch may look different to what you first envisaged, so be open to change.

Market aggressively: You are competing with many other products and services, and advertising ‘noise’ in general, so you cannot expect that your idea will ‘sell itself’. No matter what it is, you have to create a comprehensive marketing plan.

This does not necessarily mean spending

a lot of money, but you do need to have a clear plan of what and how you are going to promote.

You cannot do it all: At the very beginning, you will likely be the one doing every aspect of your business. But if your idea takes off, you must bring in other people with specific talents and skills.

Associate yourself with other business owners and start building valuable and trustworthy relationships so you can draw on those networks when you need to.

Facebook is the biggest, largest and most engaging social network in Australia, and worldwide. Many Australian users spend in excess of 20 hours+ per month on the website, far more than any other social network.

Remember to not see Facebook as free marketing anymore. The paid ads and ‘boosts’ present so much value for your dollar, and is targeted!

YouTube is the only platform that is close to on par with Facebook.

The secondary networks of Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogging sites WordPress, BlogSpot and Tumblr do attract large amounts of users but have less sophisticated platforms overall. However these sites can still drive large volumes of traffic.

My current social media use is Facebook, and more than half of our population are using it! I have a LinkedIn account because it’s aimed at professionals and if 3.9 million Australians are also using it, keeping in mind our professional workforce is about six million people, then more than half are using LinkedIn. Twitter just doesn’t have enough Australian users to justify the time spent using it. If you want to be across multiple platforms, make sure you are using a tool that allows for one post to go onto every profile you wish.

In September 1994, a 20-year-old rookie made his first appearance for Holden in a V8 Supercar at Sandown, and just one month later became a household name when he and teammate Brad Jones finished second in Australia’s great race, the Bathurst 1000. That rookie was the one and only Craig Lowndes.

In celebration of the Bathurst 1000 next weekend as well as Lowndes’ 20th anniversary in V8 Supercars, Holden is commemorating ‘20 years of Craig Lowndes’ with a Craig Lowndes SS V Special Edition Commodore.

Each car will be hand-finished and individually numbered by trained technicians at the Holden Enhancement Centre.

Buyers of the Craig Lowndes Special Edition will also be offered a framed certificate of authenticity with build plate; tickets to a Red Bull Racing private function and tour hosted by Craig Lowndes; and two general admission passes to a local 2015 V8 Supercar race and Red Bull Racing pit tour.

Glenbrook defeated St Marys in one semi final and Workers defeated Wisemans Ferry in the other semi.

Greg Helm (CEO Bowls NSW) attended the meeting recently in Lithgow between the Blue Mountains and Central Tablelands Districts where the formation of the new Central Mountains District was discussed.

The meeting was productive and positive, with all Clubs from the two Districts represented. Before any transfer can come into effect for Hazelbrook and Lawson, the Bowls NSW Board requires minutes from the BMDBA meeting showing the resolution to approve the transfer, and minutes of the Nepean DBA meeting, which approve the acceptance of the two clubs into the District.

Blacktown City is also hosting a qualifying event for the Aloha World Bowls Championship on Sunday, October 12.

AFL player in hot water GWS Giants player Heath Shaw was detained by police in Melbourne in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Shaw was a passenger in a car which was pulled over by police in Malvern Rd, Toorak. After a verbal altercation with police, he was taken to St Kilda police station.

He received a $590 penalty notice for drunken behaviour and was released on Saturday morning without charge.

Chief Executive David Matthews said he was disappointed.

“We have spoken to Heath about his behaviour and his responsibilities as a member of our leadership group,” he said.

“He accepts that he let himself down on this occasion and that his behaviour was unacceptable. We are disappointed with what happened and so is he and we have agreed that he will undergo counselling.

“We have also agreed to consider the matter further when he returns to the club after his current leave period.”

The club has informed the AFL about the matter.

hey haven’t been on the scene for very long but Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Union Club have already won their first title, with their U16 girls side taking out the ISC Teamwear Youth Girls Sevens Tournament.

The annual competition, which is hosted by NSW Rugby to develop and identify talent, featured a number of established clubs, schools and district teams.

The competition showcased tremendous talent ranging from experienced players to those brand new to the game.

The Penrith RSL team included girls whose experience varied from playing Sevens at invitational tournaments overseas to representative touch players and others excelling in sports such as soccer and athletics.

“Committee members Clinton and Shannon Ashby have worked tirelessly with their team of coaches, managers and parents to make RSL a success,” Penrith RSL Junior Rugby President, Adam Fletcher said.

“To win the first tournament we entered and have our U18s finish runners up to

Fletcher revealed the Ashbys had also been working closely with the Australian Rugby Union’s (ARU) Adam Crane to address the need for a junior competition for teenage boys and girls.

It’s understood the Spring Sevens will continue with a similar format to that of the ARU’s central venue tournament but will include boys and more age groups.

Penrith RSL also confirmed they will host Fijian Rugby Sevens legend Waisale Serevi at Nepean Rugby Park on Thursday, October 9.

Stars sign up for Nepean Triathlon @natetaylor87

star studded field made up of Olympians, Commonwealth Games athletes and Australian sporting royalty are locked in ready to compete at the upcoming Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club Nepean Triathlon later this month.

An annual Penrith tradition, the Nepean Triathlon is Australia’s oldest triathlon and will this year feature all six members from Australia’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games team including 2013 Nepean female champion Emma Moffat and 2013 Nepean male winner Aaron Royle.

Both Moffatt and Royle will have some stiff competition to regain their Nepean titles this year with fellow Commonwealth Games representatives Ashleigh Gentle, Emma Jackson, Ryan Bailee and Dan Wilson also in the mix.

Other Australian ITU representatives set to challenge for the title include Brad Kahlefeldt, Cameron Good, Peter Kerr, Ryan Fisher, Josh Amberger, Natalie Van Coevordan and Tim Reed.

A number of local triathletes will also

be looking for a podium finish come Sunday, October 26 including Sam Appleton who finished outright second last year, former City to Surf winner Melinda Vernon and Triathlon 70.3 World Championship representative Andrea Forrest.

All up 150 competitors will race the Nepean Triathlon this year with inspirational athlete John Maclean, Australian cricket legends Steve Waugh and Glenn McGrath, dual Olympian Jana Pittman and former Australian Rugby captain Phil Kearns also taking part.

The race, to be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, will feature a 1km swim along the Olympic rowing course, a 30km cycle and 10km run around the Lakes precinct.

A massive prize pool of $76,500 will be on offer for this year’s competitors.

It’s estimated 1,800 triathletes will converge on Penrith for the Nepean Triathlon and PAC Enticer Triathlons, the latter to be held on Saturday, October 25.

hey may be tucked away in an industrial part of Kingswood but the students of Shaolin Martial Arts Centres have made themselves known at the inaugural South Pacific Open International Martial Arts Championships.

Six students including owner and head instructor Stuart Brooks took part in the Open late last month in Kellyville.

39-year-old Brooks, who has been teaching in the Penrith area since age 14, said he was surprised to see so many of his students finish with gold.

“A lot of them are just starting out and,

more than just homebrew

to be as successful as they were, was a total surprise to me,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting them to come back with anything and every single one came back with at least one first placing, some even more. It was really good.”

The youngest winner was nine-yearold Corey Watson who came first in the eight to 10-year-old Kung Fu Forms category.

Also picking up a first and third placing was 11-year-old Montana Turnbull for Kung Fu Forms and Weaponry while 15-year-old Jake Evans won four medals including gold in Kung Fu Forms.

It’s estimated 350 people took part in the South Pacific Open International Martial Arts Championships.

JANUARY – The Panthers return to pre-season training, welcoming a range of new recruits including the halves pairing of Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace. Soward and Wallace hold a joint press conference, with Soward declaring: “It’s exciting times for Penrith and exciting times to be a Penrith fan, now it’s just a matter of us getting the results.”

– New recruit Jamal Idris declares he would “sit there and watch four walls” in his lowest moments at the Gold Coast.

“I’ve experienced a lot in my life and I think I’m a bigger and better person for it now,” he said.

– Phil Gould re-signs with the Panthers until the end of the 2017 season.

FEBRUARY – An under-strength Penrith goes down 32-8 to Wests Tigers in a pre-season trial in Camden.

– The Panthers play in the Auckland Nines, and enjoy a 14-11 victory over Melbourne in their opening match, before defeating the Dragons 23-8. They then lose 18-16 to Souths, but qualify for the Quarter Finals. Despite a strong effort, Penrith go down 22-12 to eventual winners North Queensland.

– Penrith thrash Newtown in their final pre-season hit out, but Jamie Soward misses the game through injury. On the same night, the Panthers hold their season launch at the Chairman’s Lounge at Sportingbet Stadium.

MARCH – Just days before the NRL season commences, coach Ivan Cleary names Peter Wallace and Kevin Kingston co-captains for 2014.

– Penrith open the 2014 season with a convincing 30-8 victory over Newcastle at Sportingbet Stadium.

– The Panthers release James Roberts from his contract due to off-field issues.

– Jamal Idris makes his NRL debut for the Panthers in a heartbreaking 18-17 loss to the Storm in Melbourne. But heartbreak turns to ecstasy the following week when a Matt Moylan conversion from the sideline after the siren gives Penrith victory over Canterbury at Sportingbet Stadium.

– Parramatta down Penrith 32-16 at Pirtek Stadium.

– The Panthers release a statement watering down rumours that Tim Grant is on the verge of quitting the club to join South Sydney.

– The Panthers reveal an all-new uniform for their cheerleaders, which garners plenty of attention from the wider media.

AUGUST – Penrith returns to form and announces their premiership credentials with a 22-16 win over the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.

The win comes at a cost though, with Bryce Cartwright and Elijah Taylor suffering season-ending injuries.

– The Panthers down St George-Illawarra 16-4 in Wollongong.

– Matt Moylan is again the hero for Penrith, with a last minute field goal securing a 23-22 win over the Cowboys at Sportingbet Stadium. The following week, Melbourne prove too strong for the Panthers with a 24-10 win.

– Penrith suffer a heartbreaking 26-25 loss to Manly at Brookvale Oval.

– The Panthers announce the re-signing

SEPTEMBER – Penrith confirms a top four spot by defeating the Warriors 22-6 at Sportingbet Stadium.

– Penrith exit the competition, beaten 18-12 by Canterbury in a Preliminary Final.

Dally M honours Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary was named the Coach of the Year at the NRL’s prestigious Dally M Awards on Monday evening.

Cleary beat out high quality opposition including Souths coach Michael Maguire and Eels mentor Brad Arthur.

Cleary was honoured for his great work in leading Penrith to the finals despite an horrific injury toll and the weight of critics declaring his side would fall over.

The Panthers had another winner on the night with James Segeyaro named Hooker of the Year at the ceremony.

Fullback Matt Moylan was the highest ranking Panthers player on the official Dally M tally for 2014.

Cummins is back Penrith’s Pat Cummins, one of the most exciting pace bowlers in the country, has signed with the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League season.

The paceman, who is still only 21, played his Grade cricket for the Penrith club in Sydney, before bursting onto the domestic scene with some superb performances for New South Wales.

“It will be fun to come back to the area that I grew up in and play in front of the cricket fans of western Sydney,” Cummins said.

“It is an exciting time for the Thunder as there were promising signs last season.”

undreds of thousands of people play lawn bowls across Australia but only one man is attempting to play at as many bowling clubs as he can to try and set a new Guinness World Record.

Since February this year, 71-year-old Frank Peniguel from country Victoria has been driving his kombi van around Australia attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for playing at the most lawn bowls clubs in a 12 month period.

On Tuesday, Mr Peniguel visited his 505th club, the Penrith Bowling Club.

Speaking with the Weekender, Mr Peniguel explained the reasoning behind his world record attempt.

“I’ve been playing lawn bowls for 12 years and I’ve enjoyed it so much,” he said.

“Bowls Australia have research to show that every year 16 per cent of all bowlers over 70 stop bowling. They either pass away, there’s an ailment or they’ve had enough.

“The idea is to get everybody over 70

When Mr Peniguel came up with the

idea for the world record attempt he then had the challenge of convincing Guinness to approve the idea as a genuine world record.

According to Mr Peniguel, Guinness receive 1000 requests per week from people wanting to either create or beat a record.

“I had to prepare a template and put it to Guinness World Records. Never has anyone asked them for 12 months to complete a record,” he said.

“When I visit each club I have to play 10 ends against a registered member of that particular club and I also have to have two witnesses from that club watching.”

Mr Peniguel could reach 700 clubs by the time his 12 months elapses.

On average Mr Peniguel visits 15 clubs per week or as many as three clubs a day, which he admits can take it out of him.

“Sometimes you need to take a break otherwise you’ll go crazy,” he said.

“The absolute majority of clubs have been very helpful. When I called the Penrith club they made an instant decision, others take some time.”

There are currently 1,958 lawn bowls clubs operating in Australia.

AROUND THE GROUNDS BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers have lost their first game of the NSW State Baseball League season, going down to Baulkham Hills 3-0 last Sunday. With 12 players and their coach missing through NSW representative duties, Penrith were forced to call up replacements from the lower grades for the match. Meanwhile, Penrith won their second match against Ryde last Wednesday 5-2. After Sunday’s loss, Penrith have fallen to second position on the first grade ladder.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks have lost their sixth game of the Gridiron NSW season, going down to the Newcastle Cobras 24-6.

The Ducks continue to look for their first win and will now take on the West Sydney Pirates at 4pm next Saturday, October 11.

FOOTBALL: Despite playing in front of a record W-League crowd of 3,084, the Western Sydney Wanderers have failed to deliver on the field, going down to archrivals Sydney FC 2-0. The Wander Women had a number of decent chances to score in the match but weren’t able to capitalise, with some terrific defence from the Sky Blues.

The Wanderers currently sit in last position on the W-League ladder and will meet Perth Glory this Sunday.

CRICKET: The Sydney Grade Cricket competition got underway last Saturday morning with Penrith taking on North Sydney at Howell Oval. In a two-day match,

North Sydney batted first posting 170 with Penrith’s Josh Lalor (5/43) doing most of the damage with the ball. When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they finished with a respectable 2/105 at stumps. Shannon Finemore currently sits on 37 not-out. Both sides meet again this Saturday at 9.30am for day two action.

NETBALL: The Penrith District Netball Association will hold 2015 State League Trials at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre on Sunday, October 19 at 9am.

AFL: The Penrith Rams are currently seeking expressions of interest for all coaching positions for the 2015 season. The Rams had a very successful 2014 season with four teams making finals including two grand finals and two preliminary finals.

All coaches are required to have at least Level 1 accreditation before applying. This can be obtained before the season starts.

Panthers fall short Penrith miss NRL Grand Final after 18-12 loss to Canterbury @natetaylor87

enrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has declared the 2014 season a “great success” despite his side falling agonisingly short of a miraculous Grand Final appearance.

Billed at the start of the year as another season of rebuilding and hard times by critics, the Panthers managed to shock the rugby league world in 2014 with their ‘never say die’ attitude and amazing crop of emerging talent.

However after finishing the year in the top four and earning themselves a place in the Preliminary Final, it all fell apart for the Panthers last Saturday evening with the Canterbury Bulldogs running out 18-12 winners at ANZ Stadium.

Despite never looking like themselves for most of the match, the Panthers made the Bulldogs sweat right up until the very last play.

Speaking after the game, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said he was proud of his team’s success but, in the end, a place in Sunday’s decider wasn’t meant to be.

“I thought the game was typical of

our season really. We were pretty much behind the whole game. They were throwing punches, so to speak, right to the death and that’s typical of this team,” he said.

“We are very proud of their effort all the way throughout the year and it was there again tonight but it’s just not quite our time yet.”

Cleary added that despite the heartbreaking loss he believed his side would learn plenty of lessons from this season which will put them in good stead for the 2015 season.

“We’ll be much better for it… we’ll have a lot of talent that hasn’t been on show the last eight weeks there next year as well, so it’s definitely a step in the right direction,” Cleary said.

“We also have the fans and community re-engaged with the club again, so that’s a good thing. We made Grand Finals in the 16s, 18s, NSW Cup and we were close in the NRL – all in all it’s been a good year for the club.”

Penrith captain Jamie Soward agreed with his coach, saying it had been a positive season both on and off the field.

The Penrith Panthers have been rocked by news that General Manager Phil Moss has quit the club to join the Wests Tigers.

Mr Moss had formed a powerful management trio at the Panthers alongside Phil Gould and Warren Wilson.

The Tigers named him as their new General Manager of Football Operations on Monday. They also announced that Jason Taylor would be their head coach for the next three seasons.

“The partnership between Phil and Jason is imperative with both given very clear objectives,” said Tigers CEO, Grant Mayer.

The Panthers are expected to commence an immediate search for a replacement.

Penrith Panthers trio Matt Moylan, Josh Mansour and Adam Docker have all been named in the Kangaroos train-on squad for the upcoming Four Nations.

If they go on to be selected in the Kangaroos squad for the tournament it would mark their Test debuts.

Moylan and Mansour have also been named to represent the Prime Minister’s XIII to play the PNG Kumuls later this month.

The final Kangaroos squad will be named next week after the NRL Grand Final between Souths and Canterbury at ANZ Stadium.

e’s just won a premiership with his NSW Cup side, now Penrith Panthers reserve grade coach Garth Brennan has the tough task of preparing his troops for yet another Grand Final appearance this Sunday.

Fresh from walloping the Newcastle Knights 48-12 in last weekend’s NSW Cup decider at Allianz Stadium, Brennan and his team have put Mad Monday celebrations on hold for another week as they prepare to face Queensland Cup winners, Northern Pride, in this Sunday’s inaugural State Championship Grand Final at ANZ Stadium.

The Super Bowl-style concept is the first of its kind for the NRL, which will see the premiers from the NSW Cup and Queensland Cup do battle for ultimate state glory.

“I think it’s a great concept and I think the NRL has shown how important it is due to the fact they scheduled the game before the NRL Grand Final,” he said.

The Panthers were as dominant as ever in the last Sunday’s NSW Cup Grand Final win over Newcastle, particularly in the second half.

“I was really concerned about Newcastle coming into the game, I thought they were a quality side and played really well throughout the year.”

Northern Pride’s entry into this Sunday’s State Championship was similar to Penrith’s path throughout the season. The Pride only lost four games all year, just like the Panthers, and won their Grand Final with ease over the Eastern Suburbs Tigers 36-4.

The game kicks off at 3.55pm on Sunday.
