enrith’s skyline could be transformed forever after Council agreed to enter negotiations with a developer to build six of the tallest apartment blocks the city has ever seen.

Council’s General Manager has been given the green light to begin commercial talks with Frasers Property Australia, to construct the towering buildings, ranging in height from 17 to 34 storeys, at the Union Road car park site.

Featuring retail and commercial space, a child care centre, public plaza, green spaces and its own residential parking, the proposed development will also integrate a Council-owned car park with 1,631 spaces.

Mayor John Thain stressed Council had not rubber stamped the development and assured residents it would work “hand-inhand” with the community going forward.

“Council has agreed to enter into negotiations with Frasers which is a significant and encouraging first step, but we’re looking at negotiations taking up to 12 months, so there is quite a way to go before any proposed development is approved,” he said.

Council called for Expressions of Interest to develop the 1.94 hectare site in 2015 with a vision to create a “vibrant urban village”.

Developers were also required to present innovative designs for an extra 1,000 spaces of public parking, with Frasers forecasting its public parking component will be delivered progressively from 2020 to 2027, subject to market conditions.

Frasers, who are behind such projects as Chippendale’s Central Park, was endorsed as the preferred proponent at Monday night’s Council meeting, beating St Hilliers, who proposed to deliver a freestanding, 1,631 multi-level public car park by 2019, funded and owned by Council.

Frasers’ option, which is at no capital cost to Council, allows Council to reallocate funds to deliver 1,000 car spaces by December 2019, through at grade parking at the Paceway and North Street sites, and potentially a multi-level car park at Soper Place.

Cr Thain said western Sydney will be home to 2.9 million people by 2031, and Penrith was a key centre for that growth.

“We want to ensure that tomorrow’s generations will look back on Penrith as a flourishing city which seized the positive opportunities of the day,” he said.

“Memories and old stories still bring a smile, even if he’s no longer laughing with us”

I don’t think a day has gone by in the last 12 months where I haven’t thought of Dad. The smallest thing will spark a memory.

When Glen Campbell died recently, I thought of Dad’s love of rock ‘n’ roll and country music; and the fact that he’d seen Campbell perform live several times.

Cliff Richard released a new song recently – that was tough because Dad was a huge fan and would have been so thrilled at the arrival of some new material.

Something as little as a TV show like ‘Blue Bloods’ returning prompts reflection; he would always ask me when the latest episode was airing in the US so he could be up to date.

I’m moving house at the moment and he would have loved providing advice and thoughts on various bits and pieces surrounding the move.

And these last few weeks have been

particularly weird. Father’s Day specials, present ideas, posters in the shops… it makes you realise that for some, these special occasions we celebrate in retail land are tinged with sadness and heavy hearts.

I presume it gets easier over the years.

And not being a father myself yet, I guess there’s a strange gap that is yet to be filled around this time of the year.

With my dad’s death, Father’s Day and his birthday all falling within four weeks of each other, September and October will forever have a tinge of sadness attached for me and my family.

In the year that has passed since he died, the roller coaster of emotions has been in full swing.

There is regret – no matter how much time you spend with somebody, I think this is almost impossible to ignore.

There is laughter – memories and old stories still bring a smile, even if he’s no longer laughing with us.

There is learning – you often learn a lot about yourself and the way you handle a difficult chapter in life.

If you are lucky enough to have your Dad with you, make this Father’s Day a special one.

Too often we can look at days like this as a chore; call it a ‘retail stunt’ or a commercial venture.

But I assure you that when he isn’t around, you’ll wish you had another hundred Father’s Days to spend with him.

If your Dad isn’t around and Sunday is a little tough to deal with, then let’s do it together. Reflect, remember and celebrate. Smile because he was here, don’t cry because he’s gone.

t’s been more than a year since my father has called me with a problem with his computer, phone, iPod, iPad or some other piece of technology that was giving him trouble.

And how I long for that phone call.

Sunday will mark the first Father’s Day I’ll be spending without my Dad. Today meanwhile marks a year to the day since he was told he was losing his brave battle with kidney cancer and had only three months to live.

After being delivered that news on September 1 last year, he would be with us for only 24 more days. At 61, he was way too young to leave this planet but over time you come to accept that you’re dealt a hand in life and you simply have to deal with it.

Look at the beautiful young teenager Hannah Rye, who captured our hearts when she attended her school formal with Newcastle Knights rugby league star Trent Hodkinson earlier this year.

She lost her battle with cancer last week at just 15-years-old. She left this world without experiencing most of what it has to offer.

The old saying ‘there is always somebody worse off than you’ is generally always true even if it is cold comfort a lot of the time.

The last 12 months has provided a lot of reflection.

Dad wasn’t really the sentimental type and while Father’s Day will be sad on Sunday it’s not really because of the day itself; moreso because it serves as a reminder that he’s no longer with us.

I am sure I speak for a lot of you who have lost a parent, particularly from illness at a young age.

Rate rise could send families over the edge EMILY NEWTON

t a time when cost of living expenses have skyrocketed for western Sydney residents and household debt sits at an all-time high, St Marys faces some of the worst mortgage stress in the country.

In Australia today, one in four mortgaged households are already in stress, meaning they do not have enough income to cover mortgage repayments and living expenses.

Interest rates currently sit at their lowest point in history, yet Australians carry the second highest level of household debt in the world.

An investigation by ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ has revealed the extent of western Sydney suburbs suffering financial stress.

Over half of mortgage households in St Marys, 53 per cent, are already under mortgage stress.

But if interest rates were to rise just two per cent, that number would climb to make 74 per cent of St Marys’ 4,494 currently mortgaged homes under stress.

Kingswood is similarly under threat as the 26 per cent of households under current mortgage stress would jump to 80 per cent following a four per cent rate rise.

Member for Londonderry and champion for the St Marys region, Prue Car, said not enough is being done to address the issue.

“Sydney is quickly becoming one of the most unaffordable cities in the world with housing prices sky rocketing and no plan from Gladys Berejiklian to address this crisis,” Ms Car said.

“Gladys Berejiklian’s inaction on housing affordability means more heartache for western Sydney families and young people aspiring to buy their first home.

This needs to change.”

Ms Car said a State Labor Government would introduce mandatory affordable housing targets to make it easier for families and young people to buy their first home and address the crisis.

“At a State and Federal level, Labor has real policy to reverse the unaffordability crisis that escalates each and every day,” she said.

“The Liberals could implement these policies today but instead they sit on their hands and watch housing prices go up.”

The figures accompany the sad reality of financial stress in western Sydney after the Social Health Atlas released earlier this year revealed that in 2011, 27.5 per cent of low income renters in the Penrith Local Government Area were under stress, a figure that is likely to have increased.

Panthers are being praised for a decision to knock back major corporate funding and regain the naming rights to Penrith Stadium.

Pepper Stadium will be no more from January next year with the iconic venue to be known as Panthers Stadium.

“This is a significant commitment from Panthers to the Penrith region, the game of rugby league and the members who have shared so many special moments at our beloved home ground over the last five decades,” said Panthers Chairman, Dave O’Neill.

“We look forward to adding another memorable chapter to our club’s proud history as the Panthers take the field at Panthers Stadium in 2018.”

The venue has been known as Pepper Stadium for the past three years thanks to a lucrative sponsorship deal with Pepper Money.

Currently branded Panthers Wallacia, the golf club and course has become the latest target for a cemetery, as demand for burial sites in Sydney continues to grow.

And while club members, Councillors and nearby residents are set to fight the plan, sources tell the Weekender their efforts are likely to be fruitless.

On Monday night, Penrith Council unanimously voted to support a planning proposal that prohibits the development of cemeteries and crematoriums in the Mulgoa Valley and Wallacia areas by making amendments to Penrith’s Local Environmental Plan.

Councillors Bernard Bratusa, Ross Fowler and Marcus Cornish passionately spoke at the meeting to protect Mulgoa and Wallacia, and were met with applause from community members that filled the chambers.

• Councillors vow to prevent cemeteries from being developed • Long-term members saddened as he spoke against the possible development of the golf club site into a cemetery.

“Fernhill and Wallacia were never ever meant to be cemeteries, and it will undoubtedly be a scar,” he said.

“This is an emotional roller coaster. For a lot of people it was completely unexpected and I’m not looking to point fingers of blame, I’m looking to find a positive resolution for the region.”

The Wallacia site was sold to property developer Lou Zivanovic in 2014, who then leased the golf club back to Panthers.

That lease is up at the end of February, and Panthers will not be given the opportunity to renew it. Financial issues have plagued the Wallacia club for some time.

Dennis Gallagher, the longest serving consecutive member of Wallacia Golf Club, is incredibly saddened by the prospective developments.

“I don’t want to go and play golf anywhere else, I’ve got mates out there and we all joined at the same time and we all still play together,” Mr Gallagher said.

“We represented the club when we were 15 and we’re still representing the club in our 70s.”

He believes the golf club affects more than just golfers as it sits opposite the Regal Oaks retirement village.

“They use the site for community events, you have people who cross the road to play Bingo every week that won’t be able to.”

Mr Zivanovic was unable to be reached for comment, but it is understood he will meet with members of the golf club in two weeks.

Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust confirmed on Wednesday it has obtained

NSW government consent for the acquisition of the Wallacia Golf Course with plans to create 60,000 burial spaces over the next 50 years.

The acquisition follows research by leading town planning group Urbis, which predicts that burial sites in western Sydney will be exhausted within 28 years, with burials continuing to comprise 30 per cent of internments in NSW. “We will be providing to all communities much needed burial space at affordable prices in a landscaped setting, mitigating the exhaustion of existing burial sites at our Liverpool and Kemps Creek Cemeteries, over the next five years,” CEO for Catholic Cemeteries & Crematoria, Peter O’Meara said.

“We will engage with the Wallacia Golf Club members and Penrith Council in the near future and look to provide recreational facilities that can be utilised by all in the western Sydney community.”

Cr Fowler said he was disappointed that the site would not remain a golf course.

Members are planning to remain vocal in an attempt to save the Wallacia club.

Bulldozers to demolish Rodley House ALENA HIGGINS

n historic house in the centre of Penrith will be bulldozed to make way for two high rise apartment blocks.

Rodley House will be torn down after a majority of Councillors declined at the 11th hour to defer the matter to allow further investigations into the property’s historic significance and current condition.

Situated at 12 Vista Street – between Rodley Avenue and Union Road – the 19th century brick villa housed three former Penrith Mayors and stands on Captain Daniel Woodriff’s original land grant of 1,000 acres by Governor King in 1804.

Despite this, Councillors refused to entertain an adjournment, noting it had previously resolved in the early 90s and again in 2012 that the property did not warrant local heritage listing following reviews into the structure.

According to a letter from former owner Bill Cammack, dated July 6, 1990, the “building has been bastardised beyond recognition”.

Councillors also expressed concerns about potential “reputational damage” in stalling an otherwise complying development and being perceived as “closed for business”. The land has been zoned highdensity residential for five years.

“It’s damaging and compromises confidence,” Councillor Mark Davies said.

Councillor Todd Carney agreed.

“We can’t keep changing the goal posts...

I don’t think it’s the right thing for Council to be doing,” he said.

Cr Carney said Council had a commitment to supply affordable housing for future generations.

“Obviously it is Council’s responsibility to provide housing in our area, and reasonably priced housing,” he said.

But Councillors Kevin Crameri and Marcus Cornish, who voted against the recommendation, called for a deferral to allow Councillors and Council’s heritage adviser to try to inspect the property for themselves.

“We need to be consistent,” Cr Crameri said.

“It appears heritage only counts if we’re in the Mulgoa Valley.”

Applicant Vista Group Pty Ltd is expected to construct two, six-storey residential buildings comprising 73 two-bedroom and six three-bedroom apartments with a basement car park, at a cost of $16.4 million.

Five people spoke to the development in front of a packed house on Monday night – two for and three against.

An archival recording of the property will be undertaken prior to demolition as a condition of consent.

Thief addicted to ‘ice’ lucky to escape full time jail term

A garden thief who targeted the same St Marys home numerous times has narrowly dodged full time jail.

Paul Sciberras, 47, faced Penrith Local court last Thursday charged with a string of ‘larceny’, ‘enter enclosed lands’ and ‘destroy/damage property’ offences.

The court heard the St Clair resident was addicted to the drug ‘ice’ at the time of the offending, but Magistrate Stephen Corry remained unmoved.

“Taking drugs doesn’t excuse you from any responsibility,” he said.

Sciberras pleaded guilty to more than a dozen sequences, including taking off with an assortment of unsecured backyard items, including tools, a leaf blower, bottles of wine, cans of soft drink, a dart set, extension cord and a silver urn.

Scaling a six-foot fence to get into the Sydney Street property, the offender would enter on his own or with others, the court heard, at one stage unscrewing the sensor light to stop them from working.

However CCTV captured him in the act.

He was convicted, handed a five-month suspended sentence, fined $1,600 and ordered to pay $2,000 in victim compensation.

But he did not bank on his DNA being found after cutting himself on the glass.

His lawyer submitted while there was “gratuitous vandalism done to the property”, he argued there were “no victims, so to speak, in the usual sense”.

However, Magistrate Stephen Corry disagreed, saying the property owner would have suffered a financial loss, with higher insurance premiums as a result.

“Ultimately, which ever way you look at it, the victim is out of pocket because of the accused,” he said.

When he was later apprehended at a Colyton residence, Kerr admitted to previously being in the store and explained away his DNA by suggesting he may have leaned up against the cabinet.

He also said he was an identical twin and assumed his brother must be responsible for the offence, but police inquiries determined he was not a twin.

The court heard Kerr was originally granted bail to defend the matter but abandoned his hearing half way through when he did not come back to court.

Magistrate Corry noted his lengthy record, albeit for drugs, before handing down his penalty.

He was sentenced to nine months jail with a five-month non-parole period.

He is eligible for release on January 18.

Crim who claimed he was a twin jailed for nine months

Jail for man who broke into motorcycle shop

A man who claimed he was an identical twin when his DNA was found at a St Marys crime scene will spend the next five months behind bars.

Penrith Local Court heard Wayne Robert Kerr, 51, forced his way into a Queen Street gold dealer store in the early hours of July 31 last year, using cutting wires on the roller door and smashing the front windows to gain entry.

Once inside, he broke glass cabinets to nab his loot, making off with a number of laptops as well as an Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Phone, collectively worth about $6,000.

A Kingswood man who broke into a Penrith motorcycle shop has been sentenced to at least four months jail.

Christopher Spence, 25, appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link last Thursday charged with ‘breaking and entering in company’, furnishing false information to a Jamisontown pawnbroker and ‘contravening an AVO’.

The Santley Crescent resident’s lawyer argued his client was “vulnerable to be manipulated by others” due to his intellectual impairment and was “roped into” the crime.

“He clearly is a man who, in my sub-

mission, could not conceive or plan the offence,” he said.

“This man is a follower – he does what he is told.”

The court heard Spence and his coaccused Brendan Russell took a number of items from the Mulgoa Road property.

Spence had previously pleaded not guilty and the matter proceeded to a hearing.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said the nature of the offence and Spence’s previous history left no other alternative to jail.

He was sentenced to 12 months with a four-month non-parole period.

Magistrate casts doubt over medical certificates

A young mother who stalled her hearing three times on medical grounds has been given one final chance to defend her matter.

Hayley Gale fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after being convicted in her absence when she failed to turn up to her contested hearing on August 9.

Taking the stand, Gale testified she went to the doctor and faxed a medical certificate to the court that morning, but it was not received in time.

However, Magistrate Stephen Corry noted Gale had done the same thing twice before, failing to appear when her hearing was first scheduled on January 12 and again when it was re-listed to May 1.

He also pointed out none of the medical certificates she had provided outlined the nature of her illness, saying the Supreme Court had determined such documents were generally inadmissible.

“I will grant the [annulment application] with great reluctance,” he said.

He made a note that any future medical certificates must be accompanied by the doctor’s oral evidence.

Her hearing was rescheduled to December 18.

Teen ordered to smarten up before driving again

Brock Walker has been warned about the risks of repeatedly driving while suspended before being barred from driving for two years.

The 19-year-old faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday and was given a stern talking to by an angry Magistrate Stephen Corry.

“Mr Walker, you’re only a young man and no doubt you want to get back to driving,” he said.

“Some people are disqualified beyond the term of their natural life... because all of these disqualifications add onto each other.”

Magistrate Corry suggested he avoid driving or riding his motorbike, including on trails and in parks, saying a lot were considered roads for these types of matters.

He was convicted, fined $200, while his ‘driving while cancelled’ charge was proved without proceeding to conviction upon him entering a six-month good behaviour bond.

Magistrate Corry also quashed a Habitual Offender Declaration which would have seen the teen sidelined for an extra five years.

Truck driver’s claims questioned by magistrate

Shane Andrew Olive has been hit with a fine for failing to keep in the correct lane.

The truck driver appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday and claimed he failed to read the road sign as he was overtaking a B-Double at the time.

“That’s why I didn’t see it,” he insisted to the court.

Magistrate Stephen Corry questioned his knowledge of the road, suggesting he would have driven that stretch of the Pacific Highway many times.

But Olive refuted this, saying he only did eight trips per year in a prime mover and it “wasn’t until I was on top of the RTA that I realised I was in the wrong lane”.

He was convicted and fined $400.

St Marys: Referee hit by player during oztag match

A player has been charged with assaulting a referee during an oztag match at St Marys last week.

On Thursday, August 24 at about 7.30pm, two groups were playing an oztag match at The Kingsway when the referee sent off a player for inappropriate comments.

It is alleged the player approached the referee and punched him to the face, rendering him unconscious.

The player fled the scene and emergency services were contacted and attended.

The injured man was taken to Nepean Hospital suffering an injury to his jaw.

A 22-year-old man was arrested nearby on Werrington Road and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘Assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, September 5.

It is understood the victim is recovering well from his injuries.

A 27-year-old man has been bail refused until Friday, November 3 after being found in possession of a gun.

The male was arrested at 2.30pm on Tuesday, August 22 after police conducted a search of his person and vehicle.

They located a .22 calibre firearm and ammunition as well as a number of drugs and some money.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with multiple offences related to possessing a firearm, ammunition and drugs.

It was also revealed that the man was charged while already subject to a Firearms Prohibition Order.

He appeared in court the following day, set to return in November with bail currently refused.

Cranebrook: Teen becomes violent during arrest

Jamisontown: Man injured during break and enter

A police officer was injured and treated at Nepean Hospital after a man became violent during an arrest last week.

At about 12pm on Thursday, August 24 police attended a residence in Cranebrook in relation to a domestic assault.

An 18-year-old male became violent when police went to arrest him.

The male resisted arrest and a struggle between himself and police officers on scene began, where one officer was injured.

Additional police were called to attend the scene in order to regain control of the situation.

He was eventually arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘Assault occasioning actual bodily harm’, ‘breach of an AVO’, ‘assault police’ and ‘resisting arrest’.

Penrith: Gun found during search of man and vehicle

Police are appealing for witnesses following a break and enter that occurred on McNaughton Street, Jamisontown that sent one man to hospital.

At 12.42am on Sunday, August 27, unknown persons have forced entry into a residence.

It has been alleged that they were armed with knives, but no other descriptions of the persons is available at this time.

A male occupant was assaulted, and his keys were stolen before the unknown persons left.

The male was taken to Nepean Hospital following the break and enter.

Detectives are currently investigating the incident.

Buying off the plan We have written in this column before about off-the-plan purchases.

If you drive through the centre of Penrith today and look around, you will see the skyline peppered with cranes as more and more developments pop-up in the local area.

Given that there is so much activity in Penrith in this space, we thought we would revisit the topic.

Here are some tips to remember about off-the-plan purchasing: 1. You are locking in today’s price and if the property experiences an increase in value between exchange of contracts and settlement you still only pay the price on the contract and you get the benefit of the increase in value. Similarly, if the property experiences a decrease in value, you may need to come up with additional funds to complete your purchase.

2. You will be waiting a significant amount of time, usually at least a year, before settlement occurs as settlement does not occur until the development (building) is completed.

3. There is some risk that the development will not go ahead in a timely manner, or in some cases at all, for a range of reasons such us Council’s refusal to approve the development or prolonged inclement weather.

4. It is unlikely that you will be able to obtain unconditional loan approval until much closer to settlement so you need to talk to a finance broker about what you need to do to make sure you can get a loan when the time comes to settle your purchase.

Land adjacent to Blue Hills Oval has been identified as the most suitable location due to ground conditions, proximity to parking, access to water taps, potential shade and compatibility with reserve use, according to a Council report.

Councillor Todd Carney said local dog owners had been “longing for a place to take dogs off-leash”.

Tipped to cost $50,000 to establish, Council will offer up $30,000 from its Grants Reserve, but the proposed 2,000sqm canine exercise spot is contingent on securing a Federal Government grant to pay the shortfall.

Currently used on occasion as overflow car parking for the oval, the site had previously been utilised in winter by Glenmore Park Soccer Club, which now operates at Mulgoa Rise.

ember for Lindsay, Emma Husar has gone back to her roots, spending time at her first job, Penrith McDonald’s on High Street, in the lead-up to McHappy Day. Ms Husar spoke to current employees about their time, and even got behind the counter herself for some Drive-Thru service, proving that good training stays with you for life.

“I started here when I was 14 and nine months,” Ms Husar said.

“I did all my training here... what I learnt here, I was able to take away with me.”

Ms Husar believes McDonald’s is one employer that uses “systematic” training to teach individuals skills they will carry with them into future employment.

“They’ve got this amazing training system that is very well structured and organised,” she said.

“There are skills I’ve learnt here, that maybe they don’t help me in Question Time, but certainly in terms of organising my office and the amount of constituent enquiries and requests that we get.”

Ms Husar was trained so well during her time at the store, that during McHappy Day last year, everything she learned kicked into gear.

“I was here this time last year when it was McHappy time, and I was in the DriveThru and I felt a bit ‘bossy’ bossing the young crew around,” she laughed.

“They just wanted to give me the bags and put them out the window.

“I wouldn’t take the bag without first checking, that quality assurance is put into you.”

McHappy Day will be held on Saturday, October 14, to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia.

ith 1,603 fewer apprentices in Lindsay this year, Labor is fighting to support apprenticeships and traineeships for young Australians.

Labor Senator and Shadow Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships, Doug Cameron attended the Western Sydney Apprenticeship and Traineeship Expo at Penrith Panthers on Tuesday, calling for more to be done to address falling apprenticeship and TAFE numbers.

“Forums like this are absolutely essential so that young people understand that going to a vocational education system can give you good jobs, high skills and good pay,” Mr Cameron said.

“I’ve had no tertiary education, I’m a fitter by trade, and I’ve ended up in the

Senate, so it can open up opportunities for you. It opens up Australia and it opens up the world.”

A part of National Skills Week, he was joined by Federal Member for Lindsay Emma Husar, Federal Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman and State Member for Londonderry Prue Car. The cost of going to TAFE has “exponentially risen”, Ms Car says.

“The NSW Government have increased the pressure on TAFE to deliver similar products on less money, so as a result of that, fees across the state as an average have risen by about 22 per cent,” she said.

“For a basic certificate III or certificate IV at TAFE in NSW, in most trades, you’re looking at $4,000 to $5,000. Four or five years ago, that was somewhere in the order of $500.”

“In Lindsay we’ve had 1,603 fewer apprentices this year, that’s a drop of 37 per cent,” she said.

“We can’t afford to have these continual cuts and lack of support for our young people.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills John Barilaro also attended the Expo.

“A recent Skilling Australia report showed Vocational Education and Training is actually a more certain pathway to employment than university and offers better prospects for higher pay,” he said.

“Some 78 per cent of VET graduates are employed after training versus 69 per cent for university graduates.”

Legacy helps to lighten the load Six years after Luke Gavin died in Afghanistan, his family is still coming to terms with the tragedy EMILY NEWTON

t’s been almost six years since Lance Corporal Luke Gavin died in Afghanistan, and every day brings a new challenge for his St Clair family.

But with the help of Legacy Australia, they’re not fighting alone.

Luke’s wife, Jacky Gavin, has nothing but praise for the organisation, especially after the bond they’ve formed with Legatee, Eric Easterbrook.

“We just hit it off. Him and his wife have accepted us with open arms,” Ms Gavin said.

“He comes over and checks on us every couple of weeks. We have a chit-chat about life and what the kids have been up to.”

Through Legacy, Mr Easterbrook provides emotional and financial support to ensure Ms Gavin and her kids – Joshua, Holly and Olivia – can continue playing sport and attending school events without having to stress.

“I honestly can’t say a bad word about them,” Ms Gavin said.

“Even my daughter, Holly, she just did her speech in school on Legacy. In it she said, ‘I get to spend time with people who know exactly what I am going through’.”

Olivia was just seven-months-old when Lance Corporal Gavin was killed, and only remembers her father through photographs and family anecdotes.

“She doesn’t really remember anything about him,” Ms Gavin said.

“For her, she’s starting to get to that age where she is at school and it does get her down a little bit because she will ask questions about it.”

Some days the children struggle to understand and accept that, unlike the other kids at school, their father isn’t coming home.

But through the support of extended family members, Legacy and Mr Easterbrook, they’re still surrounded by strong, male role models.

“Even my son, he’s just started high school and it’s been a bit of a transition for him,” Ms Gavin said.

“Eric is a really good guy. He has taught my son so much.”

This weekend the Gavin family faces another Father’s Day without their husband and father, but his memory lives on through his children.

anthers players have brought laughter, excitement and hugs to Kirinari students at Xavier College.

Welfare Officer Glen Liddiard along with players Corey Harawira-Naera, Waqa Blake, Tyrone May and Sione Katoa took time out of their busy schedules to meet students from the Kirinari unit and take them through some training moves.

Students from Kirinari, the school’s high support unit which caters for students with intellectual and physical disabilities, were given the opportunity to ask ques-

tions with many curious about the lives of footy players.

The students’ biggest questions were answered with Year 12 student Noah O’Callaghan surprised to learn from May that the players train six days a week during pre-season.

Not all questions were football related with Jacob McAndrew in Year 11 wanting to know if Blake had a favourite game he enjoyed playing on PlayStation.

“I like to play basketball, so I must say NBA 2K17,” Blake said.

Students then got to spend time having a chat, sharing handshakes and even giving hugs to the players.

In this week’s Weekender (August 25) Magistrate Milovanovich expressed his anger at an offender not presenting at court, saying he doubted their excuse.

He went on to mention that he noted he had “been charged eight or nine times for breaching his bail”. First, there was no mention whether the offender was granted or continued bail on this case.

Second, maybe the good Magistrate should have a word with his peers about their apparently very lax attitude towards granting bail. Western Weekender, can you do some sort of research into the frequency and reasons for the granting of bail at Penrith? It might prove interesting reading.

Kirstie Munn, a local volunteer of the national charity Share the Dignity, aims to change this.

“We’re a national charity where our primary focus is providing sanitary products to homeless women, women at risk, Aboriginal communities – anyone at risk,” she said.

The charity has been servicing the Penrith region since August 2015, and all of the products collected will be delivered to groups in the area.

“When I first became aware of it through a friend on Facebook, it brought to my attention something I had never considered before, which was how do homeless women deal with having their period,” Ms Munn said.

“I’m lucky I can afford sanitary pads, I can have a shower to keep myself clean.

“But there are women that are using newspapers, paper towels and even rolled up socks to create makeshift sanitary pads – where’s the dignity in that?”

Local businesses collect donated sanitary pads through April and August, and

we would donate them to a local animal shelter,” she said.

The students from Year 7 – Jia Sharma, Daniel Gamon, Bryce Rock, Renee Straub, James Lucas-Macallister and Tanya Mulholland – built the four kennels with the help of the Bunnings team and then donated them to Penrith-based charity, Dingo Den Animal Rescue.

“We chose Dingo Den Animal Rescue as they were within our local community and were in need of kennels for their dingoes,” Ms Macmorran said.

“We will endeavour to work closely with Joshua Said, President and Founder, and his team on future events.”

pring has sprung, and what better way to celebrate than to take part in the St Marys Spring Festival this weekend.

Tomorrow (Saturday, September 2) Queen Street will become a hive of activity and celebration for this year’s St Marys Spring Festival.

After an unexpected cancellation last year, this year’s festival looks to be something you won’t want to miss, according to St Marys Town Centre Chairman Alex Karavas.

“The St Marys Spring Festival has a very large local and regional community appeal,” he said.

“It offers an immensely diverse and enjoyable landscape for all attending.

“From entertainment, displays, stalls and a wide range of food, the St Marys Spring Festival is a must-see premier event. I can’t wait.”

Penrith Mayor and North St Marys resident John Thain is also excited by the return of the festival this year.

“I’m looking forward to the Spring Festival this coming Saturday,” he said.

“Council has ensured the festival will go ahead this year, scheduling remaining work in Queen Street to have minimal impact on the running of the festival.

Nominate a rep Penrith MP Stuart Ayres is calling on the community to nominate a talented local for a NSW Government State Representative Award.

“The NSW Government State Representative Award program recognises people of any age who have represented the State of NSW in a competitive field,” Mr Ayres said.

“A competitive field may be sport, music, the arts or academic and participation may have been as an individual or as a member of a team.

“Penrith is home to many talented and skilled people who may be eligible for this illustrious award.”

PCS finishes on top Students at Penrith Christian School have topped Australia’s and New Zealand’s biggest literacy competition for schools, Word Mania 2017. The school placed first for Year 8.

Run by online literacy education program LiteracyPlanet, the annual competition is based on a digital word building exercise where players are challenged to create as many words as they can from a board of 15 randomly generated letter tiles in three minutes.

The School’s prizes include a trophy, a 3D printer and an EZ Robot.

More than 400,000 students from 3,000 schools in Australia and New Zealand participated in Word Mania 2017.

Annual dinner aims to raise $100k WestCare event to help raise funds for victims of domestic violence EMILY NEWTON

estCare Community Services have high hopes for their annual dinner in September, as they raise money for their upcoming ‘Fresh Start Go’ domestic violence support program.

Andrew Paech, Director of WestCare Community Services, said Penrith has shown incredible support over the years as WestCare celebrates 40 years of servicing the region and its fifth fundraising dinner in 2017.

“Fresh Start Go is a Penrith domestic violence support program,” he said.

“It was created following extensive consultation with a whole range of frontline domestic violence services in the Penrith region.

“It’s designed to make a meaningful difference to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”

WestCare is a member of the Nepean Domestic Violence Network, a collaborative gathering of domestic violence services, facilitated by Penrith City Council.

Magnetic Places Magnetic Places is a placemaking initiative of Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Program and since 2007 has funded 63 successful projects that celebrate collaboration, creativity and culture.

Neighbourhood Renewal supports positive change by working with people where they live to enhance the wellbeing of their neighbourhood as a healthy, safe and vibrant place.

Place Making is the process of residents, community organisations and artists collaborating to create strong public spaces that celebrate residents’ creativity and connection to a place.

Through the Magnetic Places program public spaces are being transformed into creative, meaningful places that make an important contribution to the health and wellbeing of people, and the neighbourhoods they live in.

You can apply for grants up to $10,000 to deliver a creative project that transforms an existing public space into a creative place; involves active collaboration between artists and residents; provides free-of-charge events and activities, and takes place in one or more of 12 neighbourhoods Council

Roads and Maritime Services is building a new bridge over the M4 Motorway at The Northern Road, South Penrith. This work is part of The Northern Road upgrade between Glenmore Parkway, Glenmore Park and Jamison Road, South Penrith.

Work to start building the bridge includes installing temporary barriers, building temporary lanes, transporting equipment, clearing vegetation and, installing signage and line marking.

During this work, the eastbound on-ramp to the M4 Motorway and westbound off-ramp to The Northern Road will be closed on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 September 2017. These closures will be in place between 10pm and 8am.

Detours during The Northern Road ramp closures will be in place re-directing people to the new Kent Road M4 Motorway ramps. Please visit the Roads and Maritime website to view the detour maps.

To ensure the safety of workers and motorists, the speed limit on the M4 Motorway between Kent Road and Mulgoa Road will be reduced to 80km/h from Friday 8 September 2017. This reduced speed limit will be in place until project completion in 2020.

These closures will be carried out at night when traffic volumes are lower to minimise impact on traffic and safety of the travelling public.

o you really care about your customers? Or at the end of the day, do you just want their money? It is a question that publicly I am certain most business owners would answer ‘of course I really care about my customers!’. But is that really the truth?

Many business owners treat their customers well when they make contact or walk in the door. And they most certainly pay excellent attention to their ‘best’ customers, those who bring in the most money or are the easiest to work with. Of course there is nothing wrong with fostering those ‘best’ customer relationships. But often there are other customers who, while not as ‘lucrative’ as others, when added together, provide your business with a substantial proportion of your revenue.

The best businesses foster meaningful contact with their customers, rather than waiting for them to initiate a transaction or interaction.

‘Meaningful contact’ usually doesn’t include a sales pitch.

What it definitely includes is a genuine desire to inform, assist or connect.

These days, this is most often done via social media. Social media, due to its primarily casual and informal nature, provides opportunity for your business to show personality. It gives a great platform for showing that you care about your potential or infrequent customers, by adding value to their experience of your business.

Panthers have opted against a corporate partner for the stadium from next season, with the iconic venue to be known as Panthers Stadium from January. Panthers Group Chairman Dave O’Neill said the decision is considered a major investment in the Panthers brand. “In retaining the naming rights, Panthers intends to use the reach of the NRL to further promote the Panthers brand both nationally and overseas,” Mr O’Neill said.

on their line. Penrith’s defence meanwhile left plenty to be desired and while they scrambled well at times the 46 missed tackles on the stat sheet were a major concern.

With both Penrith and Manly sitting on 30 competition points, Saturday’s game couldn’t be more important. The Sea Eagles clearly have the advantage, playing at the formidable Brookvale Oval and gaining some much-needed confidence out of a late golden point win over the Warriors in New Zealand on Sunday.

Both sides will be treating this like a Grand Final, knowing that their September dreams are on the line, but for Penrith proving their critics wrong is very much part of the storyline of this game. Plenty have said their seven match winning streak was soft given the opposition they faced, but beating the Sea Eagles in such an important game in the final round

of the competition would surely silence some of those doubters.

I haven’t thought much of Manly over the past month but Trent Barrett will be telling his troops to put the past in the past and focus solely on the 80 minutes ahead of them. And with game breakers like Tom Trbojevic, Dylan Walker and Daly Cherry-Evans in their side, nobody can under-value what the Sea Eagles bring to the table.

Losing Dylan Edwards is a crushing blow for Penrith, who have named Dean Whare at fullback this week. I don’t expect him to play there and would anticipate some late changes to the starting side on Saturday.

With Matt Moylan unlikely to return, Tyrone May and Nathan Cleary – one of the most inexperienced halves combinations in the NRL – will have to do the bulk of the work when it comes to creating try scoring opportunities.

I’d like to see Penrith’s more mobile forwards in Corey Harawira-Naera, Bryce Cartwright and Isaah Yeo really step up this weekend. Yeo had a dynamite first half of the season but has been a little quieter in recent weeks, while Cartwright has eased his way back into first grade after what’s been a shocking year both on and off the field but needs a breakout game to really announce his return. There would be no better time to do it than in an important game such as this one.

The fact that Penrith have missed the second most tackles in the competition this year (behind only the Wests Tigers) concerns me heading into a game where defence will be key, especially when it comes to the for-and-against battle being played out in the bottom half of the top eight. It’s such an important game and I expect it go down to the wire.

he Penrith Panthers had the opportunity to sniff out a place in the all-important top four this weekend, instead they’ll now fight to stay alive as their NRL Finals campaign begins one week early.

A victory over St GeorgeIllawarra last Sunday would have sealed Penrith a place in the post-season but they’ll now need to either beat Manly on Saturday at Brookvale or rely on other results to go their way, to see them advance to next week.

After seven straight victories and 30 competition points to boot, it’s hard to imagine the Panthers missing the top eight but it’s entirely possible.

If Penrith miss out, they would be the first team since Canberra in 1999 to secure 30 or more competition points and miss the Finals.

Panthers backrower Isaah Yeo said he lost a fair bit of sleep agonising over the missed opportunity against the Dragons.

“I’m pretty tired. We felt like we were the better side for periods of time… It was a bit of a sleepless night but that’s footy,” he said.

“You have to get a loss sometime and hopefully it’s better now than later on.”

Versatile centre Tyrone Peachey agreed saying “it’s not an ideal situation” to be in and that Penrith’s poor start to the year could cost them.

“We can only put it down to ourselves,” he said.

“At the start of the year we didn’t go too well. All we can do now is worry about Manly and hopefully get the two points.”

The 26-year-old Indigenous All Star was very critical of Penrith’s performance last weekend, admitting he felt very deflated following his side’s first loss in 56 days.

“Everyone’s pretty disappointed because we had been going so well these last seven weeks – that was our first loss – and we hadn’t had that [losing] feeling for a while,” Peachey said.

“We did a few stupid things in that game that we shouldn’t have. When we were down their end we kept dropping it and doing stupid stuff. We can learn from it and hopefully not do it again this week.”

“Dylan has been an enormous performer for us. He always puts his body on the line for the team and is always selfless,” Panthers winger, Josh Mansour said.

“Dylan’s a player that does all the dirty stuff really well and he’s done a lot of work for us this past month and it’s going to hurt not having him.”

Edwards is expected to be sidelined with a knee injury for at least three weeks. Dean Whare has been named at fullback for this weekend’s game against Manly.

Plenty of players have stood out in season 2017

nother NRL season is almost over and it’s time to select my Team of the Year for 2017.

Firstly, this is my opinion and I have chosen some players from left field, however there is no doubt the players I’ve selected have all had outstanding seasons for their respective clubs and deserve the recognition. My Team of the Year is…

Fullback: Billy Slater To be able to come back from injury like Billy did this year shows just how great he actually is. Billy brings so much to this champion Storm side with his gameplay and competitiveness.

Winger: Suliasi Vunivalu Suliasi shouldn’t just be praised for his scoring prowess but defensively he’s rock solid too. It’s a massive advantage to your team when wingers can attack and defend like Suliasi can.

Centre: Will Chambers Will is probably the best centre in the world at the moment. He’s maturing as well and is making players around him better like Vunivalu and Josh Addo Carr.

Five-eighth: Anthony Milford

If Anthony Milford can turn up in the Finals then the Broncos are going to be very dangerous. He’s an outstanding player that can do anything from anywhere. He’s a real x-factor for Brisbane.

Halfback: Nathan Cleary (pictured) Not only is Nathan the NRL’s top point scorer for the year but to be able to direct his team around and have control of a game at such a young age is super impressive. The best thing is, he’s still learning.

It’s a real pleasure to sit back and watch Nathan play.

Lock: Nathan Brown Nathan’s a tough worker and can play many positions in the forwards including prop, back-row and hooker. He’s been really solid this year for the Eels and is a no nonsense kind of player.

Second-row: Angus Crichton Angus has been a highlight for what has been a largely down year for Souths. He hits a nice line, defensively is very solid and he knows how to find the stripe.

Angus will be even better next year with another pre-season under his belt.

Prop: Reagan Campbell-Gillard I hate seeing Reg play off the bench even though it’s been working for the Panthers.

To be able to run over 150m consistently this year, he’s easily been one of Penrith’s best players this season. Watch him sneak into that Kangaroos World Cup team.

Hooker: Cameron Smith Expect Cam to win his second Dally M Medal in a few weeks’ time. He’s easily been the best player this year and I believe

is having his best season to date at 34 years of age.

Utility: Clint Gutherson Clint can play anywhere in the backline, is an out and out footballer and he competes on every play. He is very exciting to watch.

Sometimes, culture is more important than results

hat price club culture?

What does it even mean?

Culture is a horrible word for many sports fans. It’s the native dress of an overseas country, something that lives in yoghurt, or maybe a trip to the opera.

One of the best definitions came from former Canterbury and Wests Tigers player Dene Halatau during a visit to ‘NRL Tonight’ on Fox League this week.

“Culture is a set of standards and behaviours adopted by a common group,” he said.

The latest example came last Sunday in Penrith – star Dragon Josh Dugan dropped hours before kick-off for missing the team bus. Knowing a loss would end his season, coach Paul McGregor preferred to sack one of his best attacking weapons than accept a drop in standards.

Earlier this year, Penrith coach Anthony Griffin dropped his captain Matt Moylan, along with Waqa Blake and Peta Hiku for leaving the team’s Melbourne accommodation to mingle elsewhere. Without the star trio a week later, Penrith lost 21-20 to

“If Cam Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk can follow club rules, what the hell makes you think…!”

When he’d finished, the first dressing down didn’t seem so brutal. The point is good club culture is self-propagating.

Coaches love it because coaches need it.

If you’re not following team rules in the hotel, how can you follow a game plan next Saturday night?

If you’re not at the bus stop on time, how will you make the tackle on time on Sunday afternoon?

T

hese days Brad Fittler is known best for his work on television, and probably next best for his time at the Sydney Roosters as both a player and coach.

But out west, we know where the Brad ‘Freddy’ Fittler story truly began, and where his heart really lies.

It was in the mid-1980s when Penrith ensured that a 14-year-old Fittler would later debut with the club. Coach Tim Sheens did the hard yards to sign Fittler for five years on a scholarship, knowing that by 19 the talented youngster would have worked his way through the grades and be playing top flight football.

What happened from then would be

the administration of the day’s issues to sort out.

Fittler would eventually make his debut for the Panthers in 1989, while still attending high school at McCarthy Senior High School.

As soon as he stepped foot on the big stage, it was certain that Fittler would be a star. His fancy footwork and raw ability on the football field was there for all to see.

His debut came late in the 1989 season.

The 17-year-old made his entrance to first grade at Orana Park in Campbelltown, with Penrith already having the match in their keeping by the time he came off the bench. The Panthers won 37-0 that day, and Fittler set up two tries.

Proving just how much belief the club had that Fittler would emerge a superstar, coach Ron Willey took the extraordinary step of playing him in the place of Chris Mortimer for a semifinal against Balmain at the Sydney

Football Stadium. But nobody knew it was coming – the Panthers had filed a team by the deadline on match-day that included Fittler on the bench and Mortimer at five-eighth. When the Panthers ran out, Mortimer was nowhere to be seen. The Panthers were later fined by the NSWRL for changing their team.

It has still never been confirmed, but some say that the decision by Penrith to part ways with Ron Willey at the end of the 1989 season – despite re-signing him during the year for 1990 – was partly about the decision he made that day in relation to playing Fittler in the starting side. They say he lost the respect of some of the players, who had been making noise at Board level.

Fittler would go on to play 119 games for the Panthers, including the 1991 Grand Final.

He represented both New South Wales and Australia.

fter 30 years and a staggering 30 Australian tours, Elvis tribute artist Max Pellicano is hanging up his blue suede shoes – when it comes to

Australia at least.

The performer of the hit show Elvis to the Max is heading Down Under for the final time this month for ‘Thank You Very Much: The Farewell Tour’.

Part of the reason for the farewell is to

allow Max time to focus on one of his other passions: acting.

“I’ve never had a chance to really work on my acting, so that’s one of the reasons why I did it because when I go on tour I’m gone for two to three months at a time,” Max said.

“The travelling now as I get a little older, it really wears on you and it takes a longer time to recuperate,” he laughed.

Along with the acting there’s also two little, but very important, reasons to spend more time at his home in the US. “I’ve got two little baby grandkids right now, so I really want to spend time with them too,” Max said.

While the farewell is a sad time for Max,

and I’ve got a big Elvis following, so I told everybody I’m going to do the same type of show that I did the first time I came to Australia,” he said.

It’s those people that Max said he will miss the most when the touring ends.

“And maybe Vegemite,” he said, before a moment of contemplation.

“Nah, I hate it,” he laughed.

“We were sold-out every single night, I had never seen a turn out like that.”

It was then that Max’s love affair with Australia began, leading him to become one of the most frequent international visitors to our shores.

In a fitting tribute to those early years, Max has promised his Australian fans a return to where it all began.

30 years of hits: Diesel still loving his time on the road KATE REID

n 1987 a young Mark Lizotte – aka Diesel – stepped off the bus in Sydney after a three day trip across the country.

As he launched into a schedule of nine gigs a week he could not have known that he would go on to become one of Australia’s most loved performers.

This year Diesel will mark 30 years since that trip with his ‘30 Year Thang Tour’, which will stop off at the Evan Theatre this September.

In this two-part show, Diesel will celebrate 25 years since the release of his solo album ‘Hepfidelity’ by revisiting tracks from the number one album.

Estate planning is comfortably the most neglected aspect of financial planning. People don’t like thinking about the inevitable, I certainly don’t, but none-the-less it is important. For a lot of people, once they have a Will they think they have their estate planning covered.

Whilst getting a Will is a great start, a number of assets don’t make up part of a deceased’s estate and other provisions need to be made.

The fact that these assets don’t make up part of the deceased estate can also present opportunities for estate planning strategies.

Superannuation, for most of us, is one of our largest assets and funds in superannuation do not make up part of an estate and therefore are not covered by a Will.

This also includes insurance held inside superannuation. The most effective method to ensure that your superannuation (including insurances) pass onto the person you wish, is by using a binding nomination. A binding nomination is absolute, and the trustee of the superannuation fund must act in line with the binding nomination.

A non-binding nomination is viewed as an indication only, and the trustee will use this as a guide, but is obligated to act in your best interests. This can cause issues. It is worth noting that the taxation treatment is different for dependants and

non-dependants (as per the Superannuation Act definitions). Where possible, it is best to have superannuation left to a dependant and, if need be, equalised elsewhere.

Assets not owned by a natural person (ie companies, trusts etc) are not included in the estate.

Shares in companies and units in unit trusts however, can be passed on through a Will, but may require to be dealt with in another method depending on the structure.

There are a number of estate planning issues in relation to discretionary trusts.

It is essential to ensure that your wishes in relation to beneficiaries, appointers and trustees are outlined in the trust deed.

Houses owned as joint tenants automatically transfer to the surviving joint tenant. This is perfect for many who would like their partner to have their house if they pass away. In the event that they have other beneficiaries, this may not be appropriate. In the event that a couple would like their share of the house to pass onto someone other than their partner, but would like their partner to be able to continue to live in the house, further measures must be taken.

These are just some aspects of estate planning that need to be considered.

Having a Will is a start, but only the beginning when it comes to Estate planning.

Each year in NSW, falls and associated injuries lead to 27,000 hospitalisations and 400 deaths.

Falls injuries have the highest costing to the NSW health system over any other incident, including road trauma.

One in three people over the age of 65 and one in two people over the age of 80 are at risk of a fall that will lead to a serious injury.

For people over the age of 65 you are three times more likely to end up in hospital after a fall.

However, falls do not just occur in the elderly or people aged over 65. Falls are common in younger adults and can be as a result of numerous chronic conditions such as vertigo, stroke, lower limb neuropathy and muscle weakness.

Risk factors that can contribute to falls include; strength, balance, coordination, walking speed, gait imbalances, poor vision, medication and reduced sensation of lower limbs. A study that was recently completed in Australia concluded that three hours of high challenging balance

Desexing your female dog could prevent serious illness

Pyometra is a serious and uncomfortable condition, and it can often be hard to detect. Here’s what to look out for...

Pyometra is a common disease in undesexed female dogs that requires major surgery. Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that results in the accumulation of pus within the cavity of the uterus.

It is generally seen in older female cats and dogs who have not been desexed.

Pyometras can become life threatening especially if the uterus ruptures inside the body. Untreated pyometra can cause dehydration, kidney failure and eventual death from infection and toxin accumulation.

What causes a pyometra? Each time a dog has a season (generally twice a year), she undergoes hormonal changes. These changes affect the uterus and cervix and make infection more likely. Infection is usually caused by a very common organism called E. Coli. The disease usually becomes apparent several weeks or months following heat.

What are the signs of pyometra?

Pyometra is obviously only seen in females and can occur at any age but more commonly occurs in dogs over the age of six. Early signs can be subtle and could

just include increased licking around the back end or just being a bit tired and not as hungry as usual. In the advanced stages you may notice that she drinks lots of water and sometimes you may even find a reddish-brown discharge coming from the back end. Some dogs will have a distended abdomen and become very depressed and tired.

How is pyometra diagnosed? A good history is generally suggestive of pyometra but x-rays/ultrasound and blood tests are generally needed to confirm the diagnosis and assess how sick the dog is.

the best treatment option is surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus as soon as possible. Some animals are too sick for an anaesthetic and need to be stabilised prior to surgery.

Can it be prevented? Yes! The only way to prevent this condition is by having your dog desexed. If you are not intending to breed your dog, then she should be desexed at any time from six months of age. Not only does desexing prevent pyometra and cancers of the reproductive tract, but if you get your female dog desexed before her first season then this reduces the chance of breast cancer.

With Father’s Day this weekend, it’s helpful to think about: “What does a good dad look like?”

It’s a big thing being a dad! Balancing responsibilities. Working hard to get it right. Loving your kids and wife to the best of your ability.

If you’re a dad, how are you are going with it?

Being a dad can be tricky. There’s no instruction manual. Kids are so different. Life is so busy. And no doubt we’ve all made mistakes, yet we still want the best for our kids. So how can we know which way to go?

In the Bible’s book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul has a helpful instruction, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord”.

When Paul says “Don’t exasperate your children”, it means things like; dads, aim to be consistent; not saying one thing and doing another. Set realis-

tic boundaries and follow through with them. Be fair and loving, not nasty or aggressive. Be tuned into them and not preoccupied with other things.

But Paul also says, “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord”.

Like a good sports coach, a good father leads by example. He’ll work hard at trying to introduce his children to Jesus so they can grow as mature young men and women of God. He’ll pray for them and let them know Jesus loves them and laid down his life for them. He’ll even take them to church.

That’s a lot to think about isn’t it?

Dads, the best thing you can do for your kids is help and encourage them to know Jesus. So why not get to know Jesus yourself and here’s hoping you have a very happy Father’s Day!

Hidden salt lurking in our everyday supermarket items

While salt isn’t public enemy number one, we do need to be careful of how much we’re consuming in our diet...

By now most of us know about the link between high salt diets and increased risk of heart disease.

But did you also know that many seemingly healthy packaged foods can be packed full of salt?

The Heart Foundation, in conjunction with VicHealth, recently launched the ‘Unpack the Salt’ campaign to draw awareness to the staggering amount of hidden salt in common packaged foods.

While it’s true that we need a certain amount of salt for the body to function, we can generally reach this target simply from fresh foods like fruit and vegetables.

But in reality we all consume packaged goods, which means that even if you skip salt at the dinner table you could unknowingly be having too much salt in your diet.

Some of the biggest culprits include cooking sauces, breads, ready meals, processed meats, dressings, condiments, dips and crackers, cheese and baked goods.

This doesn’t mean those foods have to be off the menu, but it pays to be smart

when it comes time to head down the supermarket aisles.

The Heart Foundation recommends a maximum salt intake for healthy adults of 5g (approximately one teaspoon and equivalent to 2000mg of sodium).

To achieve this there’s a few simple changes you can make.

Of course, eating as much fresh produce as possible is a great place to start, but if you do buy packaged vegetables aim for frozen over tinned as tinned options are packaged in salt and water – often known as brine.

If you do choose tinned products, be sure to drain and rinse them to remove any excess salt.

When you’re doing the shopping it also pays to read the label.

Keep an eye out for no salt or low salt varieties. If there’s no mention on the label then the Unpack the Salt campaign recommends checking the nutrition panel for sodium and trying to avoid products with more than 400mg of sodium per 100g.

When it comes time to sit down to your meal, skip the salt shaker and try seasoning with fresh herbs or pepper instead.

Salt is not the enemy, but as with anything nutrition related it pays to be informed so you can achieve a healthy balance.

Prevention of frost damage to plants • Mulch the root area of evergreens, conifers, tender shrubs and tender perennials with a thick layer of organic matter to prevent the ground becoming frozen.

• Move container –grown plants to a sheltered part of the garden in cold weather and provide some extra protection by wrapping the pot in bubble wrap.

• Leave the previous seasons growth on more tender plants until spring, for example penstemon, as this provides valuable frost protection during the winter.

Tennis in Penrith stands the test of time Nathan Taylor looks back at the popular sport of tennis, which has been played in the Penrith region for some 136 years and is still extremely popular today...

W

ith the weather starting to heat up in Penrith, there’s no better sport to play with friends during the spring and summer months than a spot of tennis.

But did you know that the first tennis club in Penrith started 124 years ago?

The famous Nepean Times newspaper indicates that tennis started around 1881 with the Penrith Lawn Tennis Club created in 1893.

According to extensive research conducted by Nepean District Tennis Association Vice President Neil Renaud, it wasn’t until 1914 when the first tennis association in the Penrith district was formed, however the intervention of World War I saw it fold just one year later.

Following the Great War, tennis underwent a major revival in Australia, particularly in country areas of NSW. Penrith was a town of around 3500 people in March 1921 when a meeting open to all tennis clubs in the area was held at the Penrith School of Arts to once again form a tennis association and organise a local competition.

The person primarily responsible for promoting the idea was Mt Druitt resident Harry Innes.

Soon after, it was tentatively decided to form an association, which was confirmed on April 20, 1921 when the Nepean District Tennis Association (NDTA) was officially created at a meeting attended by representatives of nine local clubs.

Well known Penrith identity and former mayor Dr Frederick Higgins was elected president, a position he held right throughout the 1920s.

The boundary of the NDTA covered the area from Glenbrook to Blacktown and extended three miles on either side of the western railway line.

A respectable 12 teams nominated for the very first NDTA competition, which started in May 1921.

Those teams included Castlereagh, Glenbrook, Kingswood Waratah, Mt Druitt, Rooty Hill, St Marys, Emu Plains, Railway and St Stephen’s.

Teams were divided into two groups of six with the two leading teams in each group to qualify for semi finals after a full home and away series of matches. The two semi final winners would then progress to the final. The final between the Kingswood Waratah club and Castlereagh was played on the ‘Railway court’ near the old Railway Street Theatre Company. The

Waratah club defeated Castlereagh in the final and, as a prize, won a new tennis net for their club.

At the completion of the inaugural competition, the NDTA Championships were soon held for doubles players only.

That competition took place in September 1921 with John Roseby and Bert Wall taking out the men’s doubles while Nita Colless and Gwen Jones won the ladies doubles. Jones later teamed up with Charles Clarke to win the mixed doubles.

These players will forever be remembered as the area’s first district champions.

The NDTA Championships completed what was a successful first year for the new association and to celebrate a concert was held at Temperance Hall to present the competition and tournament trophies.

It’s understood the concert was only moderately attended with the only people agreeing to show their faces the ones being recognised.

President of the NDTA, Dr Higgins, presented the premiership pennant to the Kingswood Waratah Club and trophies, racquets and handbags to the various winners of the doubles tournament.

NDTA’s officials weren’t left out either with association secretary Mr Stanton presented with a fountain pen for his splendid services in organising the competition and tournament.

For more than a century, tennis has been played at multiple sites in and around the Penrith area with Judges Park in the CBD and Woodriff Gardens, off Mulgoa Road, the most notable.

In the early 1960s the Nepean Tennis Club, which was located in Judges Park, was itching for a new location.

With Penrith Council purchasing the land around Judges Park for parking, the tennis courts were relocated to Woodriff Gardens, where they remain standing today.

Educating the Emus The Penrith Emus are trying to raise money via the Australian Sports Foundation to help assist players get a better education NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Emus Rugby Union Club are hoping to raise more than $200,000 for various projects that will not only benefit the players but also assist in unleashing a brand new women’s team next season.

Teaming up with the Australian Sports Foundation, the Emus are hoping to raise $100,000 to assist in Education Pathways for their players; $30,000 to fund an Elite Performance Squad; $35,000 to assist Junior Representative players; and $50,000 to establish a new women’s team called the Penrith Shemus.

During the last financial year, the Sports Foundation raised $44.75 million for vital sporting projects.

Penrith Emus Director, Ellen Smallacombe, said the Emus Education Pathways program is critical in terms of the future wellbeing of their players.

“With rising costs of education and general living in Sydney, it’s no surprise to see the current demographic of the club’s area choosing to go straight into the workforce without the opportunity of following a more aspirational pathway,” she said.

“However, if the club could offer assis-

tance in the form of scholarships, the covering of TAFE fees, or the offering of relevant group training for the players, it will really assist in the ever-improving culture of the club.”

The Emus are also raising money to fund an Elite Performance Squad where head coach Julian Huxley and elite trainers will put 20 top senior players and six top Colts players through a gruelling pre-season that will prepare them to compete with the best of the best come Round 1 next year.

But perhaps the most exciting funding project of all is the re-introduction of a women’s rugby team to play in the Sydney Women’s competition next season.

The famous ‘Shemus’ are set to return

to Nepean Rugby Park in 2018 following many years in the abyss.

“I’m currently working with the Federal Member and others to try and boost women’s sport in the area, and we’ve had a lot of interest in a women’s team,” Smallacombe said.

“A 15-woman side will join the Sydney Women’s competition next season and we need funding for a few important things like separate change rooms and better facilities for the female players to feel more comfortable. The more funds we can get for the women’s squad now, the easier it will be to get our new women’s team on the park.”

How long have you been the President of the Leonay Golf Club Ladies Committee for?

Three years ending in December of this year.

How long have you been involved with golf and what were your previous roles?

Not as long as some ladies. I retired at age 55 and one of the things on my bucket list was to learn how to play golf. I joined a weekly clinic at age 62 and went on to join a golf club, so that I might play competitively on a weekly basis.

Since I was a teenager, I always felt a need to play competitive sport. I have previously held a position on the Leonay Ladies Golf Committee as Treasurer.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing golf locally?

Our community is ageing and the majority of committed lady golfers in our club are members of that ageing community.

Numbers are falling and the main challenge is attracting younger lady members. to the club Today’s society is such that both male and female members of a family unit have to work in order just to have a life that makes allowances for extracurricular activities outside of that union as well as an allowance of time for the activities of their children outside of working hours.

Are you happy with the amount of Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

We are grateful for the support from the Liberal Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, which has enabled the club (inclusive of men and women) to put in a new path between the 10th fairway and the green.

This will improve the safety of the course for our ageing members and we are grateful for all the support that we get.

There are always plenty of success stories about golf in the Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

For a small club comprising mostly senior members, we are most proud of the fact that each year we include a Charity Day and a Pink Day into our calendar.

On these occasions, we manage to raise money for OZWAC and The Cancer Council. This year we raised approximately $8000 overall. We were well supported on both these days by the men’s committee and male golfers. All of these special things we do enhance the social aspect of being a part of a large family and, for senior members, this is a bonus.

How many registered female members does the Leonay Golf Club currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

We only have approximately 40 registered female members and, of those 40, only approximately 20 play regularly.

We run a weekly 18-hole competitive event in conjunction with a nine-hole event. Our main focus is on continuing to do this because the nine-hole event has proven to be an excellent training ground for new members starting off and a means of renewing old skills for members who have been out of the game for extended periods due to illness etc.

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you see golf locally in five years’ time?

It is a fact that a lot of golf clubs are struggling financially and many of them stand on valuable land holdings. In the future I see that there will be fewer golf courses and those left standing will have to accommodate and provide competition for a younger demographic.

The sport of golf will have to be adapted to the busy lifestyle of these young people.

Therefore shorter games for a time poor population could be one solution. Promotion of more holiday programs for children could be another.

Without Stevens’ scoring, the thirdplaced Rams were never really in it against the second-placed Bulldogs, who dominated from start to finish.

Kirk said defence and kicking accuracy played a major role in the outcome.

“It was a strongly contested defensive game,” he said.

“The difference was the Bulldogs generated 12 scoring shots and so did we, but they just kicked a lot more accurately than we did.”

Fortunately, due to a strong regular season, the Rams remain alive to fight another day and will battle another tough side in the Western Suburbs Magpies this Sunday afternoon at Henson Park.

While the two sides won a game in each of their two meetings this season, Kirk has challenged his men to rise to the occasion this Sunday in what will be a sudden-death match.

“An elimination game brings a little bit more pressure, which can be exciting or daunting depending on your personality,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Auburn-Penrith Giants have been eliminated from the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division following a 60-20 thrashing at the hands of Macquarie University.

An even playing field: NSWRL takes action to keep youngsters playing rugby league NATHAN TAYLOR

he NSWRL this week launched a new program featuring 21 alternate competitions across Sydney in a bid to encourage children of all ages and sizes to play and stay in the game of rugby league.

Including the weight and age format that enabled gun halfback Nathan Cleary to realise his NRL dream, the Recreational Rugby League Program initiative has been backed by the State Government, following a successful pilot program last year, which is endorsed by the Panthers star.

The 19-year-old admitted that he wouldn’t be playing rugby league today if not for the weight and age format of the game when he was playing as a teenager in New Zealand.

“After my first ever match it was hard to even fathom playing footy because the skill aspect was out of the game,” Cleary said.

“It was all about who ever could run the hardest and tackle the hardest. If you’re just getting smashed all the time, it’s not much fun as a little bloke.”

In line with the conclusion of this year’s Junior Rugby League season, the first of the competitions kicked off this week, with the focus on providing a fun and safe environment and a shorter commitment to ensure kids are not lost to the game.

“The W8s program allows everyone to compete on an even playing field against opposition their own size,” NSWRL

General Manager of Football, Barrie-Jon Mather said.

“This was a great success when the NSWRL introduced its pilot programs last year and gives everyone an environment where they can compete and continue to play the game. We know that unevenness of competition and the time commitment of a long season are major factors why kids turn away from the game.”

Around the grounds AFL: With the minor premiership up for grabs, the GWS Giants lost their final game of the regular season, going down to Geelong 103-59. With Adelaide’s loss to West Coast on Sunday, a Giants win over the Cats would have seen them finish the regular season on top, instead they took a huge hit and slipped to fourth.

GWS will now have to travel to Adelaide next week to battle the first-placed Crows for a place in the Preliminary Final. If they lose to the Crows, they will live to fight another day however and will return to Sydney for an Elimination Semi Final.

“Mitch has been away honeymooning but we are hoping to have him back in the next week or so,” he said.

“We certainly miss him as he’s been a good avenue for goal for us over the last few years.

We’ve got other blokes that can fill the slack but he’s certainly a key part of our side.
