he year 2015 has been frozen in time thanks to a time capsule that aims to educate future generations on what life in Penrith was once like. Ahead of the Penrith Bicentenary Festival, the official ceremony for the burial of the time capsule on Monday saw the small metal cylinder be filled with almost 20 different items. Ranging from historically focused items to objects representing a modern Penrith, Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler thanked everyone who contributed to ideas for the time capsule’s content. “It’s a great time to be a part of Penrith. Part of what we are doing in the bicentenary celebrations is burying a time capsule which could be dug up in 200 years’ time,” he said. “200 years is a significant milestone in anyone’s imagination, and to culminate that I suggest you come along to the Penrith Bicentenary Festival on Saturday where we are going to have a whole day of celebrations.” Story continues on » p. 7

Second opinion proved a life saver Local family shares their frightening health story as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
ight-year-old Malachi Anderton is just one of many young children who have suffered with different forms of childhood cancer. Malachi, who attends Werrington Public School, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Bilateral Retinoblastoma, which affects the eye, when he was just twoyears-old. With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Malachi’s parents, Garry and Stephanie, want to share Malachi’s story in the hope their situation will create awareness to other parents. “We noticed there was a white cloud in Malachi’s eye and it looked a little bit dilated – this is when we knew something wasn’t right,” Mr Anderton said. “We wanted to push to get it properly checked and after one specialist turned us away, we went to another. They wanted to find out what was happening and after a few tests, we got the news we didn’t want to hear – Malachi had a tumour in his eye.” Bilateral Retinoblastoma is a genetic form of cancer, with Malachi now having a 50 per cent chance of passing it on to one of his children in the future.
E
“It was hard and really frustrating but it made us aware of how life can be taken for granted,” Mr Anderton said. “We knew how bad the treatment can be for cancer which was concerning to us when we thought about what our son was going to go through but I encouraged my wife to just take each step as it came.” If Malachi’s cancer spread, there was the dangerous and very real potential that it would reach the optic nerve, allowing it to get to the brain. After having his tumour removed, going through chemotherapy and regular checkups every two to three weeks, the decision was made to remove Malachi’s eye when the seeds that the tumour left behind began to grow. Malachi now has a prosthetic eye and at eight-years-old, it is very unlikely his other eye will be affected at all. Mr Anderton is warning parents to get their children checked for any symptoms that may pop up of any kind. “If your child has an unexplained pain, make sure you get it checked, and keep checking it until you get a definitive answer,” he said. A child cancer survivor has a much larger chance of developing another cancer later on in life.

I’m outraged by the lack of outrage: How does ‘The Bachelor’ survive? Living and working in Penrith gives me one advantage over my fiancĂŠ, who travels into the city to work each day. You see, most nights I get home before her – which means I also get to turn the TV on first. Striking the first blow is crucial in the nightly battle for the remote control. Last Thursday night, I arrived home late to find that she’d won said battle, and I found myself watching ‘The Bachelor’. Reality television and I aren’t the best of friends, as I think most shows in the over-done genre are the furthest thing you could find from how things play out in the real world. I would rather slide naked down a hill of razor blades before putting myself through ‘Geordie Shore’, ‘Dance Moms’ or whatever the latest cooking show is. What is duck parfait anyway? To each their own, however. After all, Stacey doesn’t quite accept that watching ‘NRL 360’, ‘Sterlo’, ‘Monday Night with Matty Johns’, ‘The Footy Show’ and ‘The Back Page’ are weekly requirements. The thing that strikes me about ‘The Bachelor’, however, is how it remains so successful with women when it is clearly the most offensive, sexist and anti-feminist show on television. We live in a society that is so desperate to be offended at everything and anything, and yet ‘The Bachelor’ seems to survive unscathed. Here is a show that parades women around as if they’re pieces of meat, all waiting for one bloke to pick them to be his for all-time. A show that seems to define a woman’s success by her relationship status, and failure by the inability to convince one bloke that she’s the best of the bunch. A show that portrays romance and love as an orchestrated parade, where the man holds the power. A show that just presumes that all of the women

who have entered want to spend the rest of their lives with this individual; as if all of their tastes are perfectly the same. I was finally willing to join the world of faux outrage, but despite an extensive search, I couldn’t seem to find any! First I tried Collective Shout, a “grassroots campaigning movement against the objectification of women and sexualisation of girls in media, advertising and popular culture. These are the folks that recently succeeded in having Zoo Weekly taken off the shelves of Coles because they think it normalises the abuse, sexualisation, and objectification of women. Nothing on their website about ‘The Bachelor’, even though one could argue it does a similar thing when it comes to objectifying women. And I can assure you ‘The Bachelor’ has a much bigger audience than Zoo Weekly. Anyway, never fear, I headed over to that bastion of faux outrage, the website Mamamia. Surely I’d find some support there. No luck there either. In fact, quite the opposite. Mamamia seems to be quite big fans of ‘The Bachelor’, running a regular recap about the program that, while taking the p***, certainly doesn’t seem all that concerned about what’s being portrayed on the show. I am outraged about the lack of outrage. If you haven’t been able to tell already, I’m being somewhat facetious. I don’t really care if people watch ‘The Bachelor’ and Channel 10 would be thrilled that almost a million people are tuning in each night. My point, though, is how easily those who are so often offended by the most ridiculous of things are quite happy to sit and indulge in a show that objectifies women. Maybe, just maybe, we can all agree that it’s about personal choice. Watch what you want, read what you want. Just be smart enough to figure out what’s real and what isn’t.

n exciting era of marketing Penrith as a visitor destination has begun, with the launch of a new tourism website, www.visitpenrith.com.au, and awareness campaign by Penrith Council. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler shared these initiatives at an event last week, attended by local tourism operators, industry stakeholders and politicians. It follows a story in the Weekender last month that revealed a major plan to promote Penrith as a tourist destination. Cr Fowler said the new website, social media sites and Visitor Guide have been branded as Visit Penrith to strengthen the image and appeal of the region, while the three month advertising campaign aims to connect people to the adventure experiences in Penrith. “The new website is dynamic, engaging and delivers a personalised experience. It invites people to choose what sort of adventure they’re after or what location they want to visit and then provides tailored activities, events and attractions to them,” Cr Fowler said. “The website also connects to the Visit Penrith Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube sites, encouraging visitors to upload their own photos or videos, post comments and share their adventures using the hashtag #visitpenrith. “The advertising campaign includes a

Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa a Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler launches the Visit Penrith campaign last week mix of radio, online and outdoor promotions which speaks to the adventurer inside all of us. The eye-catching imagery and thought-provoking messages will direct people to visit our new website, and hopefully we can then convert this website traffic into foot traffic across the city.” This new way of marketing and promoting the city was identified in Penrith’s Destination Management Plan (DMP) as
an opportunity to significantly boost the number of visitors to the area. “Penrith offers a range of adventure experiences from whitewater rafting to indoor skydiving, kayaking on the Nepean River to touring a sake brewery. ADVERTORIAL
BE PREPARED FOR THE COMING STOCK MARKET CRASH THIS SPRING There are many signs pointing to another Stock Market Crash this spring, though the chances are high it’s not certain but it would be wise to take some precautions to safeguard your capital. Most people own stocks through their super fund, so it would be prudent for the next 3 months to change their super investments to a safer level, especially those who are retiring soon. Since the GFC of 2008 there has been little done to fix the structural issues that caused the problem, in fact they have just kicked the can down the road by governments throwing trillions of dollars of credit to solve the issue. We are seeing clear signals as we did before the GFC of 2008 that are pointing to another possible financial meltdown.
Things you must do now: • Change your super fund to Conservative, Safe or Cash Option. • Though our banks are among the safest in the world, there is still a chance that they may be affected for a while – have at least 2 weeks of cash available as banks may be closed for a while. • Have at least 2 weeks of essential food and water at home as supply chains may be broken if the worse case scenario plays out.

Police snapshot Cranebrook: Man to front court after police search
Cambridge Park: Two men hospitalised after fight
A man was charged last week after allegedly holding illegal items in his house including a rifle and a number of vials, believed to be steroids. He has since been released on conditional bail ahead of a court appearance in Penrith later this month. At about 12pm on Thursday, September 3, officers from Redfern Region Enforcement Squad were conducting duties on Tadmore Road in Cranebrook when they saw a man leave his vehicle whilst concealing an item in his underwear. Officers searched the man and allegedly located 17.5 grams of a drug believed to be amphetamine as well as an amount of money. That allegedly wasn’t the only item the man was hiding as when police searched his home on Tadmore Road, they allegedly located a replica pistol, a homemade semi automatic rifle, a number of vials suspected of being steroids, four boxes of fireworks, a Fire & Rescue NSW uniform and a large amount of cash. He was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘supply prohibited drug – indictable quantity’, ‘possess prohibited drug’, ‘possess unauthorised firearm’, ‘possess anabolic or androgenic steroidal agent’, ‘handle explosive or precursor without authorising licence’, and two counts of ‘goods in custody’. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on September 24.
Two men have been treated for injuries sustained after they had a fight in Cambridge Park last Thursday. At about 5.30pm on Thursday, September 3, a fight broke out between a 28-year-old man and a 32-year-old man at a home on Deborah Crescent in Cambridge Park. The 32-year-old man suffered from a number of puncture wounds to his right leg and the 28-year-old received a puncture wound to his shoulder. Police and ambulance paramedics arrived on the scene and both men were taken to Nepean Hospital. They were treated for non-life threatening injuries. A crime scene was established, where forensic specialists examined the area. Investigations are continuing.
St Clair: Police investigate kidnapping of man Police are still continuing their inquiries after a man was kidnapped in St Clair late last week. At about 9pm on Thursday, September 3, a man believed to be in his 30s was out the front of his St Clair home on Hassett Place when two men allegedly forced him into a vehicle. The vehicle drove from the scene. Police from St Marys Local Area Command began an inquiry and at about 2.30pm on Friday, September 4, the man was located on Wolstenholme Avenue in Greendale. He was initially taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment for minor injuries with inquiries into the incident still continuing.

Locals urged to donate as blood stocks run dangerously low
Dea Candy places the Penrith Progression Plan into the time capsule
Penrith’s history preserved The cookie monster with Penrith donor Jack Hunt, who made his 50th donation this week. Locals are being urged to donate blood due to a recent shortage he Blood Service is urging Penrith blood donors to ‘crumb on down’ to a blood donor centre to give blood and eat Australia’s best biscuit – curbing a blood shortage in the process. The need for an additional 1000 donors by the end of September is being spurred by a late peak in flu season which has driven existing donors to cancel in greater numbers than expected. The Blood Service is also pleading with Sydney donors to honour their appointments if fit and healthy, with a third of all donations being cancelled, rescheduled
T
or simply unattended last week, causing a major shortage. Blood Service spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire said donors who were fit and healthy should honour their appointments scheduled for this month. “Based on last week’s results, around 1,500 are likely to cancel, potentially leaving blood supplies – and the patients who rely on blood – in the lurch,” she said. “Unless you are feeling unwell or need to tend to an urgent matter, your donation is very much needed.” To give blood, call 13 14 95.
Story continued from » p. 1 Some items were recommended by members of the community, such as the Penrith Progression Plan suggested by Dea Candy, who said it will highlight the rapid change in the area. “When I was a kid the M4 stopped at Blacktown and had two lanes not three, High Street was a pedestrian mall with a fountain and the ADI site and the northern end of the Nepean River were undeveloped,” she said. “Penrith now has a lot of big projects planned or in progress... it will be interesting for the future generations of Penrith to see what Penrith was, what
was planned, but also to see what eventuated and withstood time.” Other items included a copy of the Weekender, a paper train ticket from Penrith to St Marys, a hat from Penrith Public School, a 2015 Panthers ANZAC jersey, a poppy from Poppy Park and the Bicentenary of Penrith Memorial Coin. A Council spokesperson said due to the time it takes to seal the capsule and its contents, it could not be buried at the time of the official ceremony, but will be buried at Saturday’s Bicentennial event. The time capsule will be buried in the garden adjacent to the Thornton Sales Centre at Smiths Paddock Oval, Lord Sheffield Circuit.

Major award for Penrith RSL Penrith RSL has won the 2015 RSL & Services Clubs Spirit of ANZAC Award at the 14th Annual Conference in Canberra. This is the first time that the Penrith RSL has ever won the award, which recognised the outstanding contribution throughout the year to its members and the local community which epitomises the sacrifices of those who served in the defence of the nation and in the traditions of the ANZACs. Director, Frank Portelli was also recognised for his contribution to the community as a finalist for the the Outstanding Community Member Award, along with Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge participant, Max Duignan, who was a finalist for the Spirit of Kokoda Award. Penrith RSL Chairman, Neville Barnier, said that this large amount of recognition was well deserved. “Our members and local community are everything to our club. Our growth and reputation can be attributed to our tireless work and support for our community because without the mutual relationship, we would not prosper,” said Mr Barnier. “On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate our CEO Neel Chand for his leadership and direction along with all staff at our Club for their contribution towards this significant recognition.”
Upgrades open Penrith MP Stuart Ayres joined Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler for the official opening of the Jamison Park upgrades this week. Jamison Park has undergone a much needed upgrade including the addition of sporting and gym facilities, table tennis tables, playground and amenities to encourage greater community participation in local activities. The NSW Government provided $934,901 or 50 per cent of the project’s costs following a successful Club Grants Category 3 funding application which was matched dollar for dollar by Penrith City Council. “This upgrade meets the needs of the growing population and it’s great to see the facilities being put to good use already,” Mr Ayres said.
Chamber dinner The Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to its longstanding members on Tuesday night with a Loyalty Dinner held at the Penrith Paceway function centre. Replacing the Chamber’s old certificate dinner, the Loyalty Dinner honoured local businesses that had reached significant membership milestones. Hosted by Scott McRae, the event was attended by about 120 members, who embraced a Hollywood theme. The Chamber has undergone significant change over the last 12 months with a new General Manager and committee taking the organisation forward.

Planning Proposal Reclassifying Certain Public Land in St Marys Town Centre Penrith City Council wants to hear your views on a Planning Proposal to reclassify certain public land in St Marys Town Centre (the Town Centre). The land is generally located adjacent to the existing shopping centres in the Town Centre (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) and consists of open space and car parking. The land is already zoned to allow mixed-use development (residential, retail and business). The Planning Proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community Land to Operational Land. This is required to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy (the Strategy). These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains as Community Land. The Strategy identifies how the Town Centre can become a vital, vibrant and sustainable place and provides policies and actions to create attractive public spaces and encourage new development. This will, in turn, generate activity in the Town Centre, attract new businesses and investment, and generate jobs. The actions include the creation of a town square, residential development near the train station, construction of a new street between Queen Street and Charles Hackett Drive, and the integration of the shopping centres into the Town Centre. These actions all require the use of some of the land. Changing the classification of the land does not remove the land from Council’s ownership or prevent the current use of the land from continuing. The Planning Proposal does not propose the sale, lease or development of the land – these matters will be considered in separate and later processes on how best to use the land to benefit the Town Centre and its communities. The Planning Proposal is on public exhibition for 28 days from 24 August to 21 September 2015 at Council’s Civic Centre, St Marys Office, Penrith and St Marys Libraries, and online. Fact sheets and guidance on how to make a submission are also available. Council officers will be available to answer questions on the Planning Proposal at the Civic Centre (Mondays and Fridays) and St Marys Office (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Alternatively, please contact Matthew Rose on 4732 7703 or at mrose@penrithcity.nsw.gov.au In addition to the public exhibition, an independently chaired public hearing has been arranged to occur before any Council decision is made. The timing and venue for the public hearing will be published once the public exhibition has ended.

n investigation is continuing after a man was shot in the leg at St Clair on Monday night. The 49-year-old man was standing in the driveway of his Shadlow Crescent home when he was shot in the leg at about 8.30pm. He was rushed to hospital and is said to be in a stable condition. A crime scene was established at the home where the circumstances around the shooting are still being investigated by detectives from St Marys Local Area Command. It is understood the shooter drove into the street and pulled up to the man’s house before opening fire. The circumstances behind the shooting

nvestigations are continuing after a woman died in a single vehicle crash at Luddenham last weekend. Just before 2pm on Saturday, September 5, emergency services responded to reports of a car crash on The Northern Road, 500 metres north of Park Road. The sole occupant and driver of the vehicle, a woman, died at the scene. “On arrival, officers from St Marys Local Area Command and Traffic and Highway Command located a Holden Captiva that had crashed into a tree,” a police spokesperson said. Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
I
It is believed the woman was driving north along The Northern Road, left the roadway and crashed into the tree. Exactly what caused the car to leave the road is still being investigated. A crime scene was established at the accident site with specialist forensic officers investigating. The Northern Road was closed in both directions for several hours, with local diversions put in place. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner. Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are urged to come forward and contact St Marys Police Station on 9677 7499. We told you first online: Follow us on Twitter @wwpenrith.
The injured man is loaded into an ambulance. Photo: Jason Donnelly remain a mystery with police hoping to piece together exactly what happened. Police are urging anyone with information to contact St Marys Police Station on 9677 7499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
New stadium likely for Penrith A new 30,000 seat stadium is likely to be built in Penrith, but not until work is complete on a new Parramatta Stadium, a new Sydney Football Stadium and an upgrade of ANZ Stadium. The State Government has promised an “outer western Sydney” stadium as part of their stadium package.
It is understood Penrith remains the frontrunner to secure this stadium, likely to be a decade away. “The plan for the outer western Sydney stadium is about future proofing the region’s sport and entertainment demands,” said Sports Minister and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres.

Special Report
Different backgrounds but one thing KATE REID
Finding a better life
@kate_reid6
When it comes to immigration we don’t often hear individual stories. We hear about the huge challenges, and the negative outcomes but we very rarely hear about the many individuals who have successfully made a life for themselves in Australia. Locally, many are making huge contributions to the community and adding to the diverse tapestry of people who make up our nation...
baker Athum’s life in St Marys is a far cry from his upbringing in war torn Sudan. Born and raised during the civil war, Abaker was forced to flee Sudan to Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya. Since arriving in Australia in 2003, Abaker has completed his HSC and secured a job with J.K Williams, but his true passion is music. Known by the name ‘Masta One’, Abaker decided to use his popularity as a hip hop artist to offer music opportunities to young artists. “I thought, what can I do to thank these kids for what they did for me, the support that they gave me, he said. And so began Street Dreams St Marys, free music workshops for kids living in the local community. In recognition of his work, Abaker was awarded a Local Appreciation Award by Penrith City Council in this year’s Australia Day Awards. Abaker also runs a youth soccer team and is currently in the process of editing a film which looks at the blending of cultures and how best to bring tradition into a modern day context. While life in a new country can be daunting, Abaker believes that the key to success is time and communication. “It takes a while to build up relationships and trust and get to know people, who they are, their feelings, what they do and how they think, he said.

Changing lives or Dr Hasan Sarwar the most rewarding part of his career as a plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial surgeon is seeing the happiness it brings to the people he treats. “I feel better when I see the smile on the patient, Dr Sarwar said. “Some people come with a big laceration on their hand or face. I fix it up and it is a great pleasure. The Bangladeshi-born surgeon moved to Australia with his family in 2004 and has been working at Nepean Hospital for over a decade. “I really enjoy the hospital environment, staff and my patients, he said. In 2007, along with OAM recipient Barbara Mitchell, Dr Sarwar started Aussie Bangla Smile. Funded by the Rotary Club of Nepean, Aussie Bangla Smile takes a team of doctors and nurses
F
from Nepean Hospital to Bangladesh each year to perform free cleft operations for children and adults who cannot afford treatment. “Every year we operate on about 120 patients, Dr Sarwar said. “Most of the patients have pretty complex facial deformities. Dr Sarwar has a particularly fond memory of treating a baby who had a severe facial deformity. There were concerns she may not make it through surgery, so when the team were able to complete the operation successfully, he felt a great sense of achievement. “We cannot buy this type of feeling with money, Dr Sarwar said. Since moving to Australia Dr Sarwar and his family have always felt welcomed by the local community. “I think the Penrith community is an excellent example of multicultural acceptance, Dr Sarwar said.

in common: They defy stereotypes Safe and secure world hough we see images of refugee camps on the news it’s hard to imagine spending almost two decades living in one. This was the position Bhutanese couple Ram and Ran Gautam found themselves in after becoming refugees in 1992. Speaking on behalf of the family, son Govin explained that life in the refugee camp in eastern Nepal was very basic. “It’s just a shelter for people to avoid the sun and the rain, that’s it,” he said. His parents also had little opportunity to earn their own income. “It’s very hard to go outside and get jobs from people,” Govin said. “They won’t be accepting of us because we are coming from a camp.” In 2010 the Gautam family were part of a program that saw them resettled in Australia. “We decided to go through the resettlement process because we don’t have many opportunities living in a refugee camp,” Govin said. “We decided to come to Australia because we have a blood relative living here, who could give guidance to us.” After arriving in Australia the couple took part in an adult migrant English program and found work as farm hands, bringing agriculture skills from their

nity and the wider community through events including Clean Up Australia Day and Spicy Penrith, a multicultural event which celebrates Penrith’s Indian subcontinent community. After years in a camp the Gautam’s have finally found a safe place to build a life.
“We were so limited with the resources in those countries but here if we have money we can do anything. You can go travel or you can do anything. You live with freedom,” Govin said. “We are in a peaceful place, we feel proud to be here, we feel safe and secure.”

Mayor’s News
NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor
#Penrith200
Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Penrith CBD Corporation will be held at 4.00pm on Tuesday 29th September 2015 at the PCBDC Offices, Suite 3, 488 High St Penrith NSW Further information, if required, can be obtained by calling the office on 4722 5556. Gai Hawthorn, CEO
This is an important year for the city of Penrith as we celebrate our bicentenary. Through acknowledging the past and gaining an understanding of what made our city what it is, we can build a bright and prosperous future. Around the middle of 1815 the first government building was constructed by William Cox where Penrith Police Station is in High Street. What is now well and truly the heart of our city, was once nothing more than grassy farmland which extended right down the hill to the Nepean River. The building quickly became the centre around which the settlement of Penrith grew. Other buildings followed and the area was soon transformed into the commercial and administrative centre of the district. The building constructed by William Cox also centred the town on the road west, turning it into a vital staging post for people travelling to the vast and fertile lands of western NSW. This led
to rapid growth and significant investment in the area, so the importance of that first government building in 1815 cannot be understated. Penrith was no longer just an outpost of Sydney; it became an essential link between Sydney, the hinterland and the Western Districts. Modern Penrith continues to serve Sydney and western NSW (and now Australia and the world) much like it did in the 1800’s as a busy hub of business, education and innovation. Penrith is home to almost 200,000 people who enjoy a wonderful lifestyle and we welcome 1.3 million visitors each year to our city in tourism. The Bicentenary Community Festival on Saturday at Smith’s Paddock, Thornton is the culmination of our year-long program of community events and activities. I hope to see you there.

urrent bin collection services for Penrith were to be reassessed in June 2017, but will now remain the same until June 2019. Penrith City Council voted to extend five current 10 year contracts for garbage and organics, recyclables, effluent waste, civic waste and street litterbins for a further two years. Councillor John Thain supported the idea, and said he believes the community is happy with current services, including options for extra collections if required.

“I think the community actually quite likes the services we provide. There are a number of options you can choose, including an extra red bin, or an extra yellow bin... and an extra bin collection is hardly going to break anyone’s bank accounts,” he said. Councillor Marcus Cornish is unhappy with the extension, demanding weekly collections be reinstated. Glenmore Park resident Judy Adams has paid for an extra recycling bin for the last three years, and said it’s absolutely necessary for a large household. “There’s six of us in the house, and it just wouldn’t all fit,” she said.

enrith will be the first location in the state to take advantage of revolutionary new hire equipment. Local business Uphire has secured itself a new track vertical machine – the first of its kind in New South Wales. Managing Director, Nigel McKinley said Uphire tries to offer their customers something innovative, and has done so through purchasing a new Athena 850 Track Scissor Lift. “We’ve got a new track vertical machine where you can basically work on a 20 degree slope,” he said. “As it levels itself out when it goes up in the air, it can go where other machines won’t go.” Mr McKinley said the new machine will be advantageous to businesses working on construction sites and even local sign companies. “These new machines coming into our fleet are offering people other pieces of equipment to do their jobs more efficiently,” he said. “We are the first company in NSW to have it, and are keeping things fresh to remain a leading elevated work platform hire company. “Customers see us as a company that is showing a bit of initiative and offering

dear weekender... email: news@westernweekender.com.au post: Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750
Panthers boss walks out Is there more happening at the club that the average fan doesn’t yet know? (Panthers boss quits to join Tigers, Western Weekender online). Just seems to be a lot of negative issues happening at the moment. And if that is the case how can a club that has promoted itself as being in such a strong position, and promised so much to its fans, all of a sudden be going so badly? I don’t get it. MARK WILDMAN, VIA FACEBOOK
An important lesson Well written Celeste (Emily’s death can be a lesson to us all, Western Weekender September 4). One point though, I really believe that children these days don’t get enough sleep. Up all hours chatting with friends and add that to what seems an incredible amount of pressure in our education system. I think they are set up for not coping. CHERYL MCFARLANE, VIA FACEBOOK
Life’s sad turns Great article. My 16-year-old son took his life on November 9, 2014. A lot of similarities to Emily. Though he was seeing a psychologist and was getting help. In hindsight perhaps his dad and I could have been included in his treatment to allow us a better understanding of what he was going through. I had asked on the first visit when
we should make an appointment and was told it was up to my son and we therefore never got the chance. We didn’t want the ins and outs of what he’s discussed, just to know more about his condition and strategies. LYNNE ARNOLD, VIA FACEBOOK
Early warning signs I knew Emily. She was an amazing person, this piece brings attention to a very real issue. And in ways, we all know someone who has a form of depression, we may have it, too, so we should know how to tell the signs before it’s too late. Do we ignore them, or are we blinded by our love and strength and our faithfulness in them? We do need to fix this. The more enlightened we are from a young age, the better our understanding and ability to not only help ourselves, but assist others in a range of ways. Society needs to understand, it needs to unveil mental illness in terms of taboo subjects, if not to accept, but to help and possibly prevent more fatalities than there has to be. J R LINCOLN, VIA WEBSITE
Great feature Congratulations to the Weekender on the Penrith Bicentenary wraparound last week. It was great to hear about some of Penrith’s incredible past. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, CRANEBROOK

Forget fad diets, your weight loss journey starts with your GP JADE ALIPRANDI

ocal GP, Dr Rosemarie Castro, is encouraging residents to consult their local doctors when trying to manage their weight. As part of the 2015 National Obesity Forum, Dr Castro as well as a range of other GPs are highlighting the importance of Australians utilising their doctors as a weight management resource. “Doctors are the front liners of primary health,” Dr Castro said. “We are the best resource for people wanting to avoid and prevent chronic illness that most of the time comes from being obese.” A consumer education campaign tackling these issues called Doctor on Your Side has been launched which aims to encourage overweight and obese people to think of their GP as the first port of call for weight issues. Dr Castro is just one of some 150 doctors who are part of the GP Weight Loss Alliance, a new platform used for doctors when informing their patients what is best for them when it comes to their weight. “We provide counselling to the patient and from that we establish what will fit in best with them,” Dr Castro said.
L
Erskine Park doctor Rosemarie Castro “Modifying their diet and doing regular exercise is often the best option but later down the track we can also offer proper medication.” Doctors from the Weight Loss Alliance have put the call out for the Australian government and healthcare professional organisations to recognise obesity as a chronic disease in its own right, something Dr Castro says needs to be done. Locals who want to lose weight can visit www.doctoronyourside.com.au to access tools to help initiate a discussion about weight loss with their doctor.

As a nation wonders what happened to William Tyrrell, our local community shows its support JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
ver 500 locals will be taking to the streets of Penrith this weekend to ‘Walk 4 William’. Missing toddler William Tyrrell disappeared from his grandmother’s home at Kendall on the state’s mid-north coast on September 12 last year. There are over 200 ‘Walks 4 William’ and over 250 organisers of various events across the country. The nationwide campaign stems back to the vision that Glenmore Park resident Karen Boland had just eight weeks ago while watching a news report on the toddler. “Police were explaining how they thought William was still very much alive,” Ms Boland explained. “It’s come to the point where it’s either we do something or we don’t. “It has just really hit home for me – we’re talking about an innocent child and something needs to be done.” Father-daughter duo Steven Cameron and Hayley Biegel have worked tirelessly to get the Penrith walk to happen. “I want to help because I have two little boys and I know how devastated dad

would be if they disappeared while in his care – I don’t know who can’t be upset about the William Tyrrell case,” Ms Biegel said. “I’ve had enough of innocent children having their lives disrupted like this, I want to help create awareness. Someone out there knows the truth about William,” Mr Cameron added. There are now over 30 local businesses who have donated prizes to the cause or will be participating in the walk This week, detectives put out a public assistance notice to help identify several vehicles that were parked near or were travelling past the scene at the time of William’s disappearance, a developing new lead in the case. “We don’t expect people to dig into their pockets for this; we’re just asking for people to show their support and walk for William,” Ms Biegel said. “In a short amount of time a lot of awareness has been made and a lot of people have said they will walk on Saturday which is fantastic.” Locals are encouraged to wear a Spiderman outfit, William’s favourite superhero, or red and blue in support of the toddler. Businesses along the walk will also display red and blue balloons and stream-

– the next step is to have billboards of William’s face up in every community,” Ms Boland said. The walk will start at Penrith Police Station tomorrow, Saturday, September 12 at 10.30am.

Refalo brothers honoured for service to the transport industry DALE DRINKWATER

hree Agnes Banks brothers have been recognised for their lifetime of service to the transport industry in the 20th National Road Transport Hall of Fame. Joe, Laurie and Luke Refalo are among 300 of this year’s highly regarded inductees who were welcomed into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame on Saturday, August 29. Joe Refalo and his brothers’ shared passion for the road transport industry began during their teenage years when they would teach each other to drive. “It is such an honour to be inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame, especially with my brothers Luke and Laurie, brother-in-law Michael Envidge, employee Graham Wood and family friend Barry Darlington,” Joe said. From that shared passion, the Refalo family established their excavation business, Jeffsann, and over the past 27 years, have successfully expanded the business to employ 70 staff members and run a fleet of over 50 trucks and machinery. “It’s great to have the trucking community recognise our hard work at Jeffsann and contributions to the road transport industry,” Joe said. tudents from Colyton High School Trade School are representing the west in ‘Operation Art’, which started last weekend. Four students had their still life artworks hand picked by art teacher Melissa Grahovac and will have their work displayed at the Newington Armory Gallery. “They’re all very excited to have their work displayed and to be going to the event on Saturday,” Ms Grahovac said. “It’s great to see the students so proud of something they have created.”

857 artworks from some 900 students will be displayed at the gallery at Sydney Olympic Park with some pieces to be displayed at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead after the show. Students were invited to submit colourful artwork that would lift the spirits of the children in hospital. “We were looking for uplifting and colourful pieces to submit,” Ms Grahovac said. Following the exhibition, 50 works will be selected to begin a year-long tour, starting with an exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW and then moving to a number of regional galleries.
Joe, Laurie and Luke Refalo transport to this day, which reflects the current success of the Agnes Banks based business. Marketing Manager of Shell Lubricants, Max Lane, said alongside the National Road Transport Hall of Fame, he is proud to award deserving recipients. “It’s a great honour for Shell Rimula to partner with the National Road Transport Hall of Fame and recognise these remarkable Australians like the Refalo brothers,” he said. “We’re excited to celebrate the achievements of this year’s inductees, especially given it was such a special milestone Hall of Fame reunion.” The Shell Rimula Wall of Fame is part of a four day event in Alice Springs, that included the induction ceremony and the Shell Rimula Inductee Gala Dinner.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT
Penrith City Council is encouraging everyone in the community to utilise a free service that will dispose of your unwanted electronic clutter and recycle it. Council is hosting an Electronic Waste Drop-Off Day on Saturday, September 12 at Jamison
Park between 9am and 3.30pm, that will take your broken goods. Old televisions, computers, microwaves, stereos, mobile phones and other electronic waste will be taken, disassembled, sorted and recovered for recycling into new products. Mayor Ross Fowler said the drop off event is convenient for residents to recycle e-waste and will keep Penrith sustainable. Whitegoods, gas bottles, batteries and paints cannot be accepted and to dispose of other bulky household waste items, call the Waste Hotline on 1800 734 735 to book a free household Clean Up Collection. A possible Veterinary School of Excellence and Animal Health in western Sydney has been shut down by surrounding tertiary educational facilitates, who expressed no current need for one. In March, Cr John Thain requested a report into the possible establishment of the specialist school in western Sydney. The report identified demand for this is forecast to remain low, but there is opportunity to discuss the idea with groups such as the Sydney Science Park, the Department of Primary Industry and CSIRO. The next Council Meeting will be held on Monday, September 14.

Community groups and businesses should apply now to secure a regular spot in a community centre or hall for 2016. There are around 40 community facilities available for hire across Penrith, with a range of spaces available to all sized activities and groups, and offer affordable office and meeting spaces for local businesses. Mayor Ross Fowler said this year, almost 200 groups including playgroups, dance groups, yoga, youth activities and seniors groups used the Council facilities. While most facilities offer airconditioning, interested groups can explore the features of each facility, express their interest, and download an application via Council’s website www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au. When multiple groups apply to use the one facility, priority will be given to the groups that best demonstrate a local need for their activity. Applications are open between September 14 and October 9. For more information contact the Neighbourhood Facilities Team on 4732 8021.

Signage warning of swooping magpies. Photo: Megan Dunn DALE DRINKWATER

he three most fearful words in spring – it’s magpie season. For the next four to six weeks, magpies will vigorously defend their territory, which means every walker, runner, cyclist, man, woman and child will be in the firing line of the little black and white bundles of fear. Magpies will be nesting from now until October, and you never know where these angry birds will be hiding. “There are not magpie ‘hotspots’ that we are aware of, but Council places large signage warning of the presence of swooping magpies where they occur,” a Penrith City Council spokesperson said. Signage is already up at Poplar Park at North St Marys and Swallow Drive at Erskine Park.
T
Website MagpieAlert.com has indicated more locations in the area, on Jamison Road where a magpie swooped a cyclist six times in one passing, and on Blackbutt Place, Leonay. Lawrence Orel from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service said while being swooped by a magpie can be alarming, it is mostly a bluff. “The birds are acting on a natural instinct to protect their young. Usually, they are just giving us a warning and generally only defend within 100 metres of their nest site,” he said. Up to 10 magpies can be defending the one territory at the one time, and yes, they do remember people’s faces. “The majority of problem areas for magpies are places where the birds have been provoked previously and it seems the more people annoy them, the worse they may become,” Mr Orel said.

New noticeboard gets tick of approval Wallacia Public School thrilled with new addition
Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies has visited Wallacia Public School to have a look at the school’s newly constructed electronic noticeboard, which was installed as part of a $16,977 NSW Government Community Building Partnership grant. Principal Mark Davies commented that the new noticeboard allowed the school to communicate far more effectively with their community. Ms Davies said that she was delighted to visit the school to see the upgrade and meet the students, who have given the project a thumbs up. “I’m so pleased to hear of the difference that this new noticeboard is making in communication for this close-knit school community,” she said. Wallacia Public School was one of 13 successful grant applicants who received a share of $300,000 in the 2014 round of community infrastructure grants. Submissions have just been completed for 2015 Community Building Partnership funding. Ms Davies said she hopes more local groups are successful in the future. “I’m looking forward to seeing more community groups being able to build the infrastructure and purchase the equipment they need to better serve the wider community,” Ms Davies said.

Turning back Time
We’ve always loved the movies From the drive-ins to Mike Walsh, Penrith has a long history when it comes to cinema. Jade Aliprandi looks back on some of the movie theatres that now only exist in our memories... The drive-in cinemas. Photo: Penrith City Library
F
or most of Penrith’s cinema history, there has always been a complex ready and waiting for the next patron to walk through the doors. However, it hasn’t always been rosy when it comes to cinema in Penrith. Hoyts Cinemas in Westfield Penrith currently dominates the local movie scene, but in the 1990s it faced stiff competition from Hayden Theatres and a proposed Reading Cinemas in the Panthers Leagues Club. Below are some of the cinemas that Penrith was home to, dating way back to 1911. The Hayden Twin The Hayden Twin Cinemas cost Mike Walsh a massive $2.5 million and opened in December 1981. Cinema one seated 643 people and cinema two seated 561 people and they were side by side. Lasting almost 20 years, the site of the theatres sat on the corner of Lawson and Henry Streets in Penrith and was dubbed
‘Australia’s largest twin theatre with the latest equipment’. The cinema had its name changed to Hayden Theatres later on. Hoyts eventually bought Hayden Theatres in 1998, selling the complex in 2000. It brought the curtain down on a fantastic complex that Penrith residents still remember today. Nepean Theatre The original Nepean Theatre was financed and built by a group of Penrith businessmen in 1911, and was built as an open-air cinema. It was opened three times a week. The cinema was given a partial roof in 1912 by using a tarpaulin, only for it to be blown away soon after being put up due to a storm. The cinema was shut during winter and in 1920, these months were used to demolish it and build an enclosed cinema, opening in November that year. In 1948 the premises was remodelled and decorated to give Penrith an up-todate picture palace. It seated 1172 people. It ran for the next 19 years but surren-
dered to the age of TV and closed in 1967. The building was demolished in 1977 to make way for a new bank building. Dungowan and the Avon Theatre The Temperance Hall was home to the Dungowan Theatre and became a permanent picture theatre in 1918, operating bi-weekly. The theatre was destroyed by fire in 1923 but was reopened just three years later which is when it was given its name Dungowan by townsman Cecil Horstmann who ran it as a Saturday cinema until 1933. Just like today, Mr Horstmann had a lack of audience at the cinema and was forced to close down due to the Depression. Businessman Jim Scott reopened the theatre as the ‘Avon’ in 1956, seating 457 people and after a life of 13 years screening films, it closed on November 3, 1969 to make way for a Walton’s store. The Starline Drive-in complex The Starline Drive-in theatre was proposed to Council by a Queensland company who wanted to build the establishment on 15 acres of land in O’Connell Street in Kingswood, with the proposal
gaining the support of Council. The theatre would have room for 250 cars and would employ 16 people when it opened. The sound equipment was imported from the United States and was to be among the most modern in Australia. The screen was 108 feet long and 56 feet deep. The theatre also had a restaurant serving both snacks and meals. It is said to have cost around $200,000 to build. It was opened in 1965. In 1970, upgrades meant there was more than 700 car spaces. It closed in 1984, ending a tremendous era of the drive-ins in Penrith.

You’re never too old to stop learning and contributing
Hard selling is out, smarter strategies are the way to go
Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design
Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor WS Business Centre
T
his week I read about a very inspirational woman. Her name is Barbara Knickerbocker-Beskind and she is 91-years-old. Her life story is amazing (please Google and read more about her!), which has led her to working in her ‘dream job’ as an advisor for a design firm, where she helps them to design products and services for the elderly and vision impaired. When you read Barbara’s life story, you will notice that she has never stopped learning. She has said that ‘I tried to retire five times’ and eventually went back to school to train as an artist (which has helped now in drawing her inventions). She has never been willing to accept a traditional notion of work, and found ways to keep learning and doing what she loved to do (which has always centred around problem-solving and inventing). I loved reading about Barbara’s confidence in herself and her abilities. When she saw a story on TV about the design firm that she has now worked at for the past two years, she didn’t just
ponder how nice it would be to work there. She said: “I have a unique kind of life experience and designing skills – I could be of value to their firm”. What an amazing attitude at age 89! Even her inability to use computers (because she has macular degeneration) didn’t deter her – she simply sent them a typed letter in the mail and told them what she could do for them. Barbara has always had a willingness to make things happen, without the need for perfection or a ‘glamorous’ end product. If you read articles about her, you will likely see examples of some very simple solutions that she has devised (for friends and her workplace) that most of us would never have conceived because we are searching for the ‘perfect’ solution. Barbara’s tenacity and quiet confidence has been the key to the satisfaction she has gained in her life. It has resulted in not only her own happiness, but has enabled her to bring comfort and assistance to those around her. What a legacy!
I
find it amazing to still see people face to face, up on stage or over the phone do the hard sell, pressuring me and others into making a decision. If it does work occasionally, it is because the buyer is vulnerable and you can be sure that it won’t result in a repeat sale nor a referral. Sales can get tricky at times. Customers get difficult. Deals don’t come off like they have before. No one is happy when there is no return on efforts. Sometimes even the assistance you get isn’t very helpful. With the amount of resources we have access to, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the different sales training programs, buzzwords or strategies. The truth is that selling is a lot simpler than we make it. You need to listen to potential customers about what they want or need, and then you introduce your product as the answer. You want people to think buying your services was their idea. I say forget hard selling. It doesn’t work well at all these days. Adopt a more passive or low-key selling approach and your product or service will nearly sell
itself. Rather than direct selling, you need to prove your value to potential clients. Ask potential customers to tell you about their businesses or lives and how it is all going. This will give you a great deal of useful information, including what motivates them as buyers. By listening to your customers and getting to know what troubles them, leaves you able to provide a solution that involves your product. Rather than selling, the job is problem solving, which is a positive for everyone. So it is important to remember: – If you care more about solving problems than selling products you’ll get fewer objections and close deals faster. – Relationships matter, but demonstrating value weighs more in importance. – Be willing to network and meet new people, but always have objectives which involve getting something out of it. – Sales strategies do take work. Make sure you always include honesty. – You’re more likely to fail because you’re not mentally, financially, and physically fit rather than because you don’t have the right sales skills.

Time goes by but Jon still rocks KATE REID @kate_reid6
W
hen it comes to entertainment there’s not many areas of the industry that Jon English hasn’t dipped
his toe in. The multi-award winning performer has worked on stage in productions of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘The Pirates of Penzance’, has appeared on Aussie TV screens in shows like 90s hit ‘All Together Now’, where he played an ageing rocker, and of course has had a successful music career, which has won him four ARIA Music Awards. Though he admits to loving music, theatre and screen fairly equally Jon does feel that music takes top honours purely for the fact that he has the opportunity to be in the driver’s seat. “It’s all on me. If it fails it’s me that fails. If it works I get all the accolades,” he said. “Whereas with everything else to a certain degree you’re dancing to someone else’s tune, which is not necessarily a bad thing. “I just get much more personal satisfaction... if something’s my baby. “I like the live thing too because there’s no going back and there’s no take two. You’re up there and you’re doing it and that’s that.” Jon’s live shows have been perfected over more than four decades in the industry, but he feels the secret to his successful gigs is about more than just the music. “I just think it’s about communication, and the fact we have a lot of fun,” he said. “But more communication, they like a chat, they like me talking to them.
“A lot of guys get up there and just play at people, one song after another and then a ‘thank you very much’ afterwards.” Jon will be bringing his musical talent to Penrith Hotel on Friday, September 18 as part of ‘The Classic Rock Tour’, giving local audiences the chance to experience his extensive back catalogue. “We cover a fair bit of my career and play all the hits and tell some anecdotes,” Jon said of the show. “There’s also a few songs we do that weren’t hit records but everyone wants to hear them. “We try and tip our hats to just about everything. So it’s basically a bit of a trip down memory lane.” And what a lane it is. Starting out at 22 in Harry M Miller’s production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, Jon has since produced 14 albums and won numerous accolades, including a shared AFI award with Renee Geyer, a TV Week Logie Award for ‘Best New Talent’ and a Countdown award for ‘Most Popular Male Performer’. Though it would appear there’s not much left that Jon hasn’t tackled, he still has a couple of achievements to tick off his bucket list. “I’d like to see a full on professional production of a show I wrote called ‘Paris’,” he said. “I spent a lot of time on that and it’s a very successful album, but so far nobody in Australia’s had the balls to just say ‘alright let’s do this’, they’re much more keen on doing productions that have already been overseas.” When asked about the changes he has seen in the entertainment industry since he first got his start, Jon says he’s noticed a change in the way theatre productions are created. “We’ve lost our sense of creativity a little bit I think,” he said.
To add to his already extensive resume, Jon will also start work on a feature film which will start shooting this October on the Gold Coast. “It’s a contemporary psychological horror type film,” he said. “That’s all I can tell you at the moment.”
Fans of Jon will be thrilled to find him performing in a pub setting later this month in Penrith. Jon English will be performing at Penrith Hotel on Friday, September 18 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $35. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

hose that love the music of the 60s and 70s won’t want to miss American contemporary jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat and Tears when they head to Rooty Hill RSL this weekend. Forming in New York City in 1967, the band are most well known for songs such as ‘Spinning Wheel’, ‘And When I Die’, ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’ and ‘Lucretia Mac Evil’. They have also covered some of the music world’s biggest hits from artists including Billie Holiday, The Rolling
Stones and James Taylor. At the height of their fame, Blood, Sweat and Tears had the honour of beating The Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ for Grammy Album of the Year. Over the years band members have come and gone, as tends to happen when you’re around for almost half a century, but Blood, Sweat and Tears’ genre defying mix of jazz, funk, soul, blues and rock ‘n’ roll still makes for a thrilling live music experience. Don’t miss this legendary band live! Blood, Sweat and Tears will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Sunday, September 13 at 8pm. Tickets are $79. ystery, malice and murder are coming to Werrington with Henry Lawson Theatre’s production of the classic thriller ‘Dial M for Murder’. Ê ‘Dancing with the Stars’ has been renewed for another year with Channel Seven bringing it back for 2016. This season has drawn its lowest ever ratings but Seven seem content on giving it another crack. No word yet if host Shane Bourne will return but after plenty of criticism, it’s unlikely he will.

Ê This certainly came as a surprise last week when Channel Seven announced it had acquired the first seven seasons of popular Channel Nine comedy ‘The Big Bang Theory’. The show, which has been a favourite of Nine’s for many years, will now air on Seven and 7Mate from October. Nine will still air any new seasons but Seven hold the rights to most of the back catalogue. Ê Channel Seven has announced the airdates of a number of new and returning shows. ‘The X Factor’ premieres at 7pm this Sunday, September 13 while new game show ‘The Chase’ begins at 5pm this Monday, September 14.

Ê FOX8 will screen the 67th Emmy Awards live at 10am on Monday, September 21. This year’s awards will be hosted by comedian Andy Samberg, and will be
replayed later that night at 7.30pm.
Ê This month marks 40 years since hilarious UK comedy ‘Fawlty Towers’ hit our screens and to celebrate, Foxtel’s UKTV will air every episode back to back from 12pm on Saturday, September 19. It’s hard to believe only 12 episodes were ever made of this classic series, so why not sit back and enjoy some laughs next weekend! Ê Fox Sports has secured the television rights to the National Basketball League (NBL) for the next five years. The landmark deal will see NBL games telecast live in high definition at 7.30pm across Wednesday to Saturday evenings throughout the 19 week regular season. BOOK Man On Fire
Stephen Kelman // KATE REID Man On Fire is the second release from novelist Stephen Kelman. His first novel Pigeon English was a shortlisted nominee for the 2011 Man Booker Prize and while following up such a well received novel could have been a curse, Kelman has once again hit it out of the park, releasing a beautiful and captivating story about an unlikely friendship. The story follows John Lock, an Englishman who has come to India to assist world record holder Bibhuti Nayak with his latest Guinness World Record attempt. Part of the charm of the novel is the alternating narration between the main characters, Nayak and Lock. Kelman also keeps the reader in suspense as to the hidden reason
why Lock has come to India, which is a key part of the book. Adding to the intrigue of this book is how it blends fiction and autobiography. The character of Bibhuti Nayak is based on the real life Indian record breaker of the same name. He holds seven Guinness World Records and 12 Limca Book Records in physical strength to his name. He aims to have 72 records to his name, a lofty goal that he will more than likely achieve. Funny and touching, this is a novel that celebrates friendship, Indian culture and determination. Stephen Kelman has done it again.

DVD Mad Max: Fury Road Rated MA // KATE REID
Natalie Imbruglia Male // KATE REID
It’s been a few years between albums for Natalie Imbruglia. Six years on from 2009’s ‘Come To Life’ and the Aussie singer is set to release her newest project, ‘Male’. The album features covers of tracks made famous by some of music’s most well known males including Tom Petty, Damien Rice, Neil Young, Cat Stevens and Aussie singer/songwriter Josh Pyke, along with bands The Cure, Death Cab For Cutie and Zac Brown Band. It’s a nice concept and while there are some standout tracks like Daft Punk’s ‘Instant Crush’, which gets an interesting makeover, and Iron & Wine’s ‘Naked As We Came’, which suits the sweetness of Imbruglia’s vocals, others are just painful. Case in point: The Cure’s hit ‘Friday I’m In Love’ which is turned into a bango laden mess. After six years it would have been nice to hear some original tracks!

I don’t think I’ve seen a movie in a long time that’s as action packed as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. The most recent film in the classic ‘Mad Max’ franchise sees warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) on the run from the tyrannical Immortan Joe and his fortress, the Citadel.
BE PART OF THE FUN AT THE

MARATHON
Along with the evil leader’s five wives, Furiosa is attempting to find freedom with the help of an armoured (and pretty bad ass) truck, known as the War Pig. When Furiosa meets up with Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), they join forces in an attempt to escape from the warlord and his team of gruesome henchmen. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ doesn’t let up from start to finish; it’s an in-your-face full throttle race across a barren dirt
covered landscape. Though the franchise centres around the character of Max, he is outshone by Theron who nails the role of the ballsy warrior who will stop at nothing to escape the clutches of an evil madman. The stunts in this film are outstanding and for those that love their movie experiences action packed, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ won’t disappoint.

How much does one
cage egg really cost?
You wouldn’t keep your pet like this. But hidden away in sheds across Australia, hens who are just as smart and sensitive as the family pet spend every waking moment in a cage — all for the sake of a cheap egg. She cannot sit comfortably or stretch her wings. Without the ability to exercise, her body is weak. Chances are that she, or one of her cage mates, is living
with an untreated broken bone. But trapped in a cage, in a shed with thousands of cages, no-one is ever likely to notice. Here she will spend 30 long hours to produce just one cage egg. The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

WINE LIST
CONCERT
It sparkles!
T
alk to Dan Buckle, Senior Winemaker at Chandon about bubbly, and you’ll very quickly learn that here’s a man most passionate about the fact he’s making Australian Sparkling Wine – not an imitation Champagne. And while there may be others that refer loosely to Aussie bubblies as ‘Champagne’, he’s adamant that his Australian Sparkling Wine is purely and uniquely that, because just as the French boast of their Champagnes reflecting soils made up of their unique chalk deposits covered with a mix of sand, marl, clay and lignite, his Sparkling Wine is reflective of Chardonnay grown on True Blue Australian red volcanic basalt soils, and known as ferrosols. His latest Sparkling release, a 2012 Blanc de Blancs (a wine made exclusively from white grapes) was crafted entirely from Chardonnay fruit off vineyards in Victoria’s cool Upper Yarra Valley and the equally cool Whitlands Plateau of the King Valley. And after tirage and secondary fermentation, Dan gave this one 36 months’ ageing on yeast – similar to the important Methode Traditionelle process in France. Pay $41 to kick off that next celebratory dinner… you’ll find the forward limey and apple-fruit flavours and zesty mineral acidity a great match with mussels in a creamy tarragon sauce, or scallops sprinkled with anise-flavoured slightly spicy Thai basil. One to note: Peter Logan’s 2013 Shiraz from his Orange vineyard, a cold climate at 870m, has delicious red berries, plum and white pepper, cinnamon and beef stock flavours. It’s a cracker drop.
What a way to spend a Sunday! KATE REID @kate_reid6
T
he Joan’s Sunday Series will be saying a fond farewell this weekend with their final show for the year, ‘Tangalo – The Art of Tango’. Tangalo brings together musicians Emily-Rose Šarkova, Owen Salomé, Susie Bishop, Amy Putt and Johan Delin and dancers Eddie Perez and Teresa Lavers for a performance of Golden-era and modern tango music. The group perfectly blends beautiful vocals, guitar, flute, violin, double bass, and piano with the movement and
energy of Argentinian tango dancing. Tangalo have performed for audiences across Australia and around the world and now it’s Penrith’s chance to witness their show which is full of passion and flirtation. It’s the perfect way to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon in the local area. So head along to The Joan and say goodbye to the Sunday Series for another year. ‘Tangalo – The Art of Tango’ will be on at The Joan on Sunday, September 13 at 3pm. Tickets are $30-$35 including a glass of wine with cheese and crackers after the show. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.thejoan. com.au or call 4723 7600.

With your ruler Mars in sunny Leo, Rams are in an optimistic phase. No challenge is too great as you approach life with extra energy, enthusiasm and adventurous ideas. But expect conversation overload when Mercury reverses through your relationship zone. Make sure you choose your words wisely.

HOROSCOPES
This week it will be unusually easy to be swept away with dubious dreams and uncertain schemes that have no basis in reality. So keep your Bull bull**** detector on high and keep your feet firmly on the ground. Are you expecting a substantial sum of money to land in your bank account sometime over the next two years?
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Don’t expect others to magically read your mind. You’ll have to be extra patient and precise in the way you communicate this week, otherwise misunderstandings are likely. Saturn also shifts back into your relationship zone, so expect a steep learning curve in your dealings with others. Singles – avoid lightweights!

When it comes to your aspirations for the future, you’re full of fabulous dreams and schemes but avoid letting blind optimism lead you up the primrose path to trouble. Stay on top of facts and leave fantasy for the movies. If something [or someone] looks and sounds too good to be true, then walk away.
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Lions – do you feel like a cat on a hot tin roof? Avoid being cooped up inside this week – make sure you move your muscles in a variety of different ways. Some Leos will become confused about a complicated financial situation; while others make wildly impulsive purchases [that you later regret].
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
With Jupiter in your sign, learn to put a positive spin on a perceived failure. With energy and enthusiasm, you can turn a pig’s ear into a silk purse! But avoid signing contracts or making big-ticket purchases between Friday and October 9, when Mercury reverses through your money zone.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Get ready for some family fiascos and relationship rumbles, as Mercury reverses through your sign for three weeks. So avoid bringing up controversial or sensitive subjects until a more suitable time. Courtesy of Saturn, prepare to undertake some serious study as you discipline your mind and learn new skills.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
If you’re not careful then an unreliable friend or questionable acquaintance could lead you astray. So keep your realism radar on high and avoid getting caught up in dubious daydreams. You’re in for a few hard financial lessons over the next two years, as Saturn stirs up your money zone.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Saturn [planet of hard work, personal responsibility and lessons to be learned] moves back into Sagittarius on Friday, where it stays until December 2017. Saturn will send many challenges your way over the next two years. But, if you are smart, then you’ll learn some valuable life lessons and you will gradually mature.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Avoid being impatient about a work matter [or education issue] that will take time, tact and persistence to resolve. Your ruler Saturn shifts into Sagittarius on Friday, which heralds a period when you’ll be more politically involved or philosophically-minded. But resist the urge to blame others when things go wrong.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Over the next two years, take your hopes and wishes from the vague abstract realm and bring them down to Planet Earth. Through hard work, focus and discipline, you can make your dreams come true. It’s also the perfect time to learn from others and experiment with what works and what doesn’t.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Pisceans can be very gullible – especially this week. Confusion reigns supreme, as Jupiter opposes Neptune. Just because someone sounds impressive, doesn’t mean they are the real deal. Relationships and personal projects are definitely in a state of flux, so avoid making important decisions until the dust settles.

cumulation. What are the signs of pyometra? Pyometra is obviously only seen in females and can occur at any age but more commonly occurs in dogs over the age of six. Early signs can be subtle and could just include increased licking around the back end or just being a bit tired and not as hungry. In the advanced stages you
may notice that she drinks lots of water and sometimes you may even find a reddishbrown discharge coming from the back end. Some dogs will have a distended abdomen and become very depressed and tired. How is pyometra diagnosed? A good history is generally suggestive of pyometra but xrays/ultrasound and blood tests are generally needed to confirm the diagnosis and assess how sick the dog is. Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, the best treatment option is surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus as soon as possible. Some animals are too sick for an anaesthetic and need to be stabilised prior to surgery. Can it be prevented? Yes! The only way to prevent this condition is by having your dog desexed. If you are not intending to breed your dog, then she should be desexed at anytime from six months of age. Not only does desexing prevent pyometra and cancers of the reproductive tract, but if you get your female dog desexed before her first season then this reduces the chance of breast cancer developing later in life by 90 per cent.

Pyometra is a common disease in undesexed female dogs that requires surgery. Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that results in the accumulation of pus within the cavity of the uterus. It is generally seen in older female cats and dogs who have not been desexed. Pyometra can become life threatening especially if the uterus ruptures inside the body. Untreated pyometra can cause dehydration, kidney failure and eventual death from infection and toxin ac-

People who start exercise even late in life can reap the benefit of good health, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine says. Researchers tracked the health of nearly 3500 people whose average age was 64, for more than eight years. People who already had a record of sustained and regular exercise, meaning vigorous activity at least once a week, boosted their likelihood of ‘healthy ageing’ sevenfold more than compared to people with a lifestyle of persistent inactiv-

ity. ‘Healthy ageing’ was rated by an absence of major diseases and disabilities, good mental health – the lack of depression or cognitive decline – and the ability to maintain social connections. The gain even among newcomers to exercise was roughly triple. “Significant health benefits
were seen among participants who became physically active relatively late in life,” the paper said. Without regular workouts, maximum aerobic power falls in men by up to half between the ages of 20 and 60. Women begin to lose fitness aged around 35, with aerobic power also falling by up to half by the age of 60. Eventually, everyday activities become “intolerably fatiguing” for older men and women. Another study they published found that relatively high-intensity aerobic exercise over a relatively long period of time reverses these losses and could boost maximal aerobic power by 25 per cent. Long-term aerobic training can maintain or restore aerobic power in later life. The effect is the equivalent of turning back the biological clock for older people by up to 12 years. The level of exertion should be enough to raise the heart rate to 120 beats a minute or higher, which includes a brisk walk and swimming. So get some regular exercise, it can slow or reverse the loss of aerobic fitness, reduce your biological age and prolong your independence.

Both an employee and an employer can terminate someone’s employment if the employee resigns or an employment contract has reached its set termination date. If you have questions about your employment there are some excellent resources available at www. fairwork.gov.au.

In the 1920s in a Belfast shipyard many of the workers became Christians. They made the decision to live with Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. When these workers became Christians, something fascinating happened. The workers brought back tools and equipment which they had knocked off in such quantities that an extra tool shed had to be built to provide for them! Becoming a Christian makes a difference! In the Bible’s book of Luke, we hear of a man named Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a crook. He used his position as
You can make a difference in your life

The Bible tells us how Zacchaeus stood up and said, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount!” We read how Jesus commended Zacchaeus’ decision. Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house!” Zacchaeus’ decision to follow Jesus, to change his life, saved his life! To live as a Christian changes your life for the better – just like Zacchaeus and the shipyard workers in Belfast! Imagine if everyone in our world changed their life like this! People everywhere deciding to live with Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. No need for locks! No need for security devices! What a great world it would be!
a tax collector to rip off huge amounts of money from the people from whom he collected tax. One day Zacchaeus met Jesus. That day changed everything for Zacchaeus! Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home for lunch. The crowd watching were flabbergasted that someone like Jesus would have a meal with someone like Zacchaeus! But having met Jesus, Zacchaeus was a changed man.

In an ever-changing political environment it is hard to keep track of your entitlements at work. In NSW a person’s work conditions are set out by the relevant award or by the agreement or contract entered into between the employer and the employee. There are a set of standards however that set out the minimum working conditions that must be afforded to workers working in the private sector. The National Employment Standards set out the following: 1. Maximum weekly work

While we have a wealth of information at our fingertips, it’s becoming harder to recognise a reliable source when it comes to information on nutrition, especially with so many health bloggers and high profile public figures offering up their opinion. Just as we do with our general health it’s important to look out for health professionals who offer scientifically backed advice on nutrition. After all you wouldn’t ask your mechanic for help with
kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
a heart condition, so why consult unqualified people when it comes to nutrition. The gold standard for nutrition advice is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD). These university qualified health professionals have spent four or more years studying the science of food and keep up to date with the latest scientific evidence. They also work in line with standards set by
the Dietitians Association of Australia. This is particularly important for those who are managing health conditions. It’s scary how many times I’ve seen comments from people online who have decided to stop taking medication, without consultation with their GP and dietitian, all because of diet advice given to them by an unqualified source. Most people would have also heard of the term nutritionist. Unlike an APD a nutritionist is not qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy. Their expertise lies in offering general nutrition education. Unfortunately the issue with the title ‘nutritionist’ is that it’s not regulated, which means that anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, no matter how little education they have. To ensure you’re getting reliable information it’s important to check that the nutritionist is university qualified, which means they have three years of science education that informs their advice. While it can be confusing, keeping an eye out for qualified sources will help you to feel safe in the knowledge that the nutrition advice you are receiving is reliable and scientifically backed.

GRAND FINAL
Penrith team set to make history p.65
Meet the new MG Montanna Geyer, daughter of Penrith NRL legend Mark Geyer, is making a name for herself in netball. Photo: Megan Dunn
NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
er surname is synonymous with the Penrith sporting landscape, now 19-year-old Montanna Geyer is set to make her own mark with Panthers. The South Penrith resident, whose father is Penrith rugby league legend Mark Geyer, has been selected to represent Panthers in the inaugural Netball NSW Premier League (NNSWPL) competition, which begins in 2016. The new competition, which was officially announced in July, is designed to attract the best current and emerging
H
talent in NSW. Its purpose is to offer a local, elite platform for players, coaches, officials and administrators, and provide bridging opportunities into the Australian Netball League and subsequent ANZ Championship. Geyer was one of 13 players picked in the Panthers Opens team alongside fellow local and Australian Diamond Paige Hadley. Speaking with the Weekender, the 14 year netball veteran said she was looking forward to being part of the new concept. “Premier League is really new and exciting. It’s going to be really competitive, fast and the calibre of netball players involved is really high,” she said.
“To be named in the team alongside someone like Paige Hadley is unbelievable. I’m just really pumped to play.” The NNSWPL will feature eight teams from across the state and will be contested across two divisions – Opens and U20s. The Panthers team is made up of players and representatives from the Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains Netball Associations, with the Opens team to be coached by Netball NSW Hall of Famer Lisa Beehag. “To make the team I had to trial over at Sydney Olympic Park a few weeks ago, I hadn’t played netball in a while, so it was good to see everyone again,” Geyer said. “When I found out I made it, my family
were really proud, they think it’s so exciting where this opportunity could one day take me.” Geyer is set to be the next member of her famous family to make it in the sporting world after her father Mark played 180 NRL games, her brother Logan played in the Holden Cup and her uncle Matt won premierships with the Melbourne Storm. Premier League training is expected to start in November before a pre-season tournament begins in March, followed by the commencement of the 14 week regular season, which begins on April 18. All games in the NNSWPL will be played at Netball Central at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush.

Panthers sign AFL player for two years In a major recruitment shock, the Penrith Panthers have announced the signing of Gold Coast Suns AFL player Josh Hall on a two-year deal. 25-year-old Hall was born in Townsville and grew up playing rugby league but went on to achieve success as a high jump athlete. He was picked up by Gold Coast in the 2012 Rookie Draft and played seven games for the Suns in his three years at the club. “From the first time I met Josh I was impressed with his personality and enthusiasm,” said Panthers boss, Phil Gould.
Cleary adds new job to his football CV Panthers coach Ivan Cleary will coach the Prime Minister’s XIII. The Australian Prime Minister’s XIII will play Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on September 26. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity, and I’m particularly looking forward to working with some of the younger players who have bright futures,” Cleary said. Penrith’s Josh Mansour, James Segeyaro, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Tyrone Peachey are all in the train-on squad for the game.

Wanderers too good for Originals as friendly Glenmore Park rivalry reaches its 10th year NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
hed Towns Reserve in Glenmore Park was the setting for one of the biggest rivalries in local cricket last weekend, the annual Redbacks Cup. The Redbacks Cup, now in its 10th year, is a 40 overs match between two sides from the Glenmore Park Redbacks Cricket Club – the Originals vs the Wanderers. “We started this tradition 10 years ago, it initially began as a match between the U23s and Over 23s but for the last seven years it’s been fought between the Redbacks Originals and the Wanderers,” Glenmore Park Redbacks Club Secretary, Adrian D’Agostino said. “The Originals team is made up of players who played juniors with the club or players who played their first senior cricket with Glenmore Park, while the Wanderers team is made up of players who have come to the Redbacks from other clubs.” This year’s Redbacks Cup was well contested as always. The Wanderers scored a very healthy 8/244 after 40 overs with the Originals only managing 9/188 in reply. The Wanderers’ 56 run win was their first victory in four years and only their
C
The Wanderers won the Redbacks Cup for just the second time second of all time, with the Originals leading the way with five Redbacks Cups to two. “It was a very good standard of cricket last Saturday, and we selected guys that have contributed to the club both on and off the field,” D’Agostino said. “The Redbacks Cup is always a great way to launch our senior cricket season each year and it was good to see around 50 people head out to watch the match.” Top scorer in the 10th anniversary Redbacks Cup was Ben Carter, who hit an impressive 94 runs for the Wanderers.
D’Agostino also had a hit for the Originals, scoring 16 runs. “It was great to see a number of players fly in from interstate to play in the match including Chris D’Agostino, who flew down from Gladstone in Queensland and Mark Earl, who came from Melbourne,” D’Agostino said. “I also want to thank Irene Johnson who catered the event and Warren Ward who donated his umpiring services on the day in his seventh Redbacks Cup.” After a decade of success, the Redbacks Cup will almost certainly return in 2016.

Ramettes into Grand Final Penrith set to make history after remarkable sporting turnaround NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
n their first season they were flogged by 100 points every single week, they couldn’t buy a win, the best they could do was a draw in the final round. Four years later those same girls, albeit with a few changes, will compete in their first ever Grand Final this weekend. The Penrith Ramettes’ story is remarkable. It’s a story that first year captain Natalie Camilleri hopes has one more chapter left in it. “We didn’t win a game that first season,” she said. “To have such a quick turnaround in just a couple of years and make a Grand Final, I couldn’t be prouder of the girls.” The Ramettes qualified for their first AFL Sydney Women’s Division 2 decider after coming away with a nail-biting 29-27 win over the Auburn Giants last Saturday afternoon at Henson Park. Heading into the final quarter Penrith were down by four points, but an inspirational speech by captain Camilleri gave the Ramettes the edge they needed to get the job done. “We all came together in a little huddle
I
Taylor Leitch. Photo: Megan Dunn
The Penrith Ramettes in action last weekend. Photo: Christian Triffitt and I gave the girls a bit of a pep talk and said ‘this is it, there’s 20 minutes left, how bad do you want it?’” she recalled. “Everyone just really banded together, defended really hard and that last quarter was manic.” This Saturday at 9am the Ramettes will travel to Blacktown to take on the first-placed Gosford Wildcats in the allimportant Grand Final. Despite losing to the Wildcats on both occasions this season, Camilleri said
she’s confident in causing an upset this weekend. “We didn’t have our strongest team in both of those games, so I feel we’ve got an advantage coming into this game with a close to full-strength team,” she said. “I think the biggest aspect that will decide the game is mental attitude. It’s going to come down to who wants it more and who can stay focused mentally the whole game. Fingers crossed we come away with the win.”
After a season’s worth of entries, 19-yearold Taylor Leitch is officially the Western Weekender’s ultimate Panthers fan. For 27 weeks the Weekender’s rugby league lift-out Extra Time ran a weekly Fan of the Week competition which featured Penrith supporters from all around the country explaining why they love the Panthers. All entries were thrown into a hat last Friday with Ms Leitch from Cambridge Park selected as the winner of a $3000 Helloworld travel voucher thanks to the Penrith Homemaker Centre. Miss Leitch, who’s been an avid fan of the Panthers for her whole life, plans to use the amazing prize to visit her nana in Cairns as well as take a trip to the United States with her mum, also a Penrith fan. “I want to take mum to New Orleans and Tennessee because it’ll be her 50th birthday and my 21st,” she said.

CRICKET: Penrith’s Naomi Stalenberg has been named in the 2015/16 Lend Lease Breakers squad for the upcoming Women’s National Cricket League season. Stalenberg is one of 15 girls to make the squad which also includes dual international sensation Ellyse Perry. Fellow Penrith cricketers Mikayla Hinkley and Amy Edgar were named in the Breakers Academy. The Breakers Academy is designed for players on the cusp of selection in the squad to have the opportunity to train with and learn from the Breakers squad. AFL: The Penrith Rams are officially out of the AFL Sydney Division 2 finals after they went down to the Manly Warringah Giants 64-29 last Sunday. The Rams were never in this one with the Giants leading at every change. By three quarter time the Giants held at 53-17 advantage, which the Rams were never able to chase down. Best for the Rams was Daniel McDonald who kicked two goals, while Phil Aumann and Max McNamara both had strong games. It will go down as a successful season for the Rams who made the semi finals for the first time in a number of years. RUGBY LEAGUE: Penrith Panthers stars Lewis Brown, Sam McKendry and Dean Whare have been selected

Penrith to battle Manly after finishing Holden Cup season as Minor Premiers NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith may have walked away with their first Holden Cup minor premiership last weekend but Panthers coach Cameron Ciraldo admits the job is only half done. After winning comfortably against the Knights 36-18 last Saturday afternoon, the Panthers were shocked to learn they had finished first past the post after competition leaders, North Queensland, lost a thriller to the lowly Gold Coast Titans later that day. Penrith’s win put them in front of the Cowboys by just one competition point, leaving the North Queenslanders in second after 26 rounds. Speaking with the Weekender, Ciraldo admitted his first year in coaching has been a wonderful ride but the season is far from over yet. “It’s been a lot of fun so far, the boys have been really good and worked hard,” he said. “All the staff have been on the same page, but we all know the job is only half done, so we’re hoping to go on with it in the next few weeks.” After narrowly missing the finals last year,

Photo: Jeff Lambert/Penrith Panthers the Panthers will finally return to the postseason for the first time since winning the premiership in 2013 when they take on the fourth-placed Manly Sea Eagles this Saturday afternoon at ANZ Stadium. If Penrith manage to defeat the Sea Eagles
for the third time this year, they’ll earn a much-deserved week off and a place in the Holden Cup preliminary finals. “We’re not thinking about what comes next, we’re just focused on this game against Manly,” Ciraldo said. “We played the Sea Eagles twice this year and they are a really good team. I went out and watched them at Shark Park on Sunday and they put on a really good performance. “One of their star players is Tom Trbojevic and he didn’t even play on Sunday and they still put 50 on the Sharks. He’ll add another dimension to their team, it will be a big test.” Penrith have unearthed a number of future superstars during their return to dominance this season including captain Brent Naden, halfback Nathan Cleary, prop Oliver Clark and lock Tyrone May. However Ciraldo won’t be asking any of these players to do anything different when the finals roll around. “I was reading a story about the seven big superstars of the U20’s and there wasn’t one Penrith player named,” he said. “We have some very good players but the strength of our squad is our depth.” Meanwhile, Penrith’s NSW Cup team plays Newcastle on Sunday afternoon in an elimination finals match.

The term fifth wheeler derives from the motorhome connecting to the tow vehicle via a turntable or ‘wheel’, allowing articulated motion.
