undreds of fi refighters were called upon to battle a ferocious, out of control blaze this week that left an ominous feeling about the summer months ahead. The fi re emergency at Castlereagh and Londonderry saw residents evacuated from their homes, power cut and property put under threat on Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews started fighting the grass fir e at about 11am on Tuesday, when it began on a property near Devlin Road, Castlereagh. Th roughout the afternoon hundreds of

fi refighters bravely fought to save homes, successfully protecting every house in the fir e’s path. As well as ground crews, helicopters were called in to water bomb the fi re as the fla mes were fanned by hot west to north-westerly winds. Residents in Castlereagh and Londonderry, including homeowners on Devlin Road, Nutt Road and surrounding streets were evacuated. Johnny Greenhalgh has owned and lived on a property on Devlin Road for 32 years and spoke to the Weekender not long after the call was made for residents on his street to evacuate. “I was here when the fi re began and I would have gone to work but I could see that the fi re was

spreading and thought that I had better stay,” Mr Greenhalgh said. The Weekender was at the scene when the fir e reached Nutt Road, just metres away from homes, on Tuesday. Richmond resident Melanie Carr just made it to her elderly father’s house on Nutt Road in time to save his two dogs. “I was worried about dad. That’s why I fle w down here but luckily he was already gone,” she said. Despite the close proximity of the fi re, some long-time residents were not concerned about the threat, having lived through previous fires. Story Continues Page Seven
