Man shot dead on St Marys street Suburb rocked by gunfire as cops investigate links between fatal shooting and outlaw motorcycle gangs TROY DODDS

man shot dead at St Marys last Friday night was due to get married in the coming weeks, it has been revealed.

Police say that the 29-year-old shooting victim had links to outlaw motorcycle gangs, which may have played a role in his fatal demise on Brisbane Street.

Emergency services were called to Brisbane Street about 7.20pm last Friday after reports that a number of shots had been fired.

The victim was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

The Homicide Squad is investigating the incident with assistance from St Marys Local Area Command, while Strike Force Estop has been established to investigate the incident.

It’s understood at least two people were involved in the shooting.

“They certainly wanted to make sure this individual was deceased,” Detective Chief Inspector Grant Taylor of the NSW Homicide Squad said.

“We have lots of avenues to explore and all the avenues lead us down the road of outlaw motorcycle gangs.”

One resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Weekender he heard between four and six gunshots ring out in the suburb last Friday night.

“We heard about four to six or more short loud bangs while eating dinner,” the resident said.

“Thought it was some firecrackers getting let off. Thankful that my family is safe as my partner only arrived home around 10 minutes before.”

The victim’s fiancée was in a car near where the man was shot. She saw her future husband die, and police believe she was lucky not to have been injured herself.

“A number of those projectiles entered the vehicle she was in,” Detective Chief Inspector Taylor said.

“She is very shaken up.”

Police want the public to contact them with any information on the silver Commodore used by the attackers.

“This vehicle was either lying in wait and was aware that the deceased was at this location or the deceased was followed from the Lidcombe area,” Detective Chief Inspector Taylor said “We won’t stop investigating until we get a result.”

s one of the biggest companies on the planet, Apple is used to telling people what to do and how to think.

In fact, it made an artform out of it, revolutionising the entire music industry, re-inventing the mobile phone and making tablets a must-have accessory.

But as the tech giant learned last week, you can only rule the roost for so long.

Eventually, people get sick of being dictated to and look for alternatives.

Apple’s decision to remove the humble headphone jack from its next iPhone, an attempt it seems to disrupt the multibillion dollar audio visual industry, has been met with significant criticism.

No longer do people look at Apple as visionary; no longer do they feel a need to ‘follow the leader’.

Instead, Apple has been the butt of jokes, Internet memes and a wave of negativity from tech experts.

The party is over.

If anyone knows how Apple feels, it’s the Liberal Party across the country.

Last weekend’s Local Government Election again showed that the Liberal Party is on the nose, particularly in western Sydney.

In Penrith, Labor will dominate the new Council, though a few independents could well hold the balance of power.

Liberal Party insiders must be wondering how they got here, particularly in Penrith where the Liberal dominance of recent years is being slowly eaten away.

It wasn’t so long ago that Penrith had a Liberal Federal member, three Liberal State members and a Liberal-dominated Council. But slowly, Labor has been creeping back into style.

The last Local Government Election in 2012 saw just four Labor members elected onto Council. This time around, it’s almost double that number.

Federally, Fiona Scott won the seat of Lindsay for the Liberals just three years ago but in the space of one term, her margin was eaten away and the seat is now held by Labor and Emma Husar, who delivered her maiden speech in Parliament this week.

The Liberals lost Londonderry at the last State Election to Prue Car, who is making tremendous inroads for Labor in western Sydney.

Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies have three years until they face the next State Election but there must be some concern in their respective offices given the trend of recent elections.

That said, both are fine local members who have achieved plenty for the area, and you only had to hear Mr Ayres’ remarks at the Chamber of Commerce Loyalty Dinner on Tuesday night to know how dedicated he is to delivering for Penrith.

But both will be powerless to buck the trend of Labor dominance if the Liberals don’t pick up their game across the board.

And it is at the State level where people are most venting their frustration with the Liberals.

When Mike Baird was elected Premier, he became the untouchable king of politics in Australia.

Young, handsome, likeable and the most incredible publicity to start his journey as Premier – welcoming Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge to Sydney back in 2014.

Just like Apple, anything Mike Baird touched turned to gold.

But now he finds himself in a similar position to the tech giant – struggling to sell his message and being labelled by some as a dictator.

That’s a very strong word particularly given history tells us that true dictators are people like Robert Mugabe, Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler.

Mike Baird is nowhere near that ilk and it would be ludicrous to suggest so.

However, the wider public now has a general feeling that Mr Baird is delivering them a message of “like it or lump it”.

From lock-out laws to the closure of the greyhound industry, there is a consensus that Mr Baird is telling people how to live their lives and failing to consult properly with the people affected.

Federally, Malcolm Turnbull faces similar issues and the marriage equality plebescite threatens to turn into a nasty issue that could dog his leadership for the next year.

Whether or not Labor is a better alternative is a discussion for another day.

Some would suggest that both Luke Foley and Bill Shorten are average leaders being made to look good by the governments of the day.

Only time will tell.

What is for sure, however, is that the Liberal Party needs to find a way to address its slide, particularly in western Sydney, or it will continue to face annihilation at all levels of politics.

Apple may talk a big game but the numbers show the vast majority of mobile users don’t have an iPhone.

The Liberals can talk big too, but the ballot box always tells the real story.

Husar hits the ground running New Lindsay MP delivers heartfelt maiden speech to Parliament indsay MP Emma Husar will make tackling domestic violence a priority during her first term in office, declaring it a “national emergency”.

The new Labor MP delivered an emotional and heartfelt first speech to Parliament on Monday, acknowledging her against-all-odds journey to Canberra.

“I am Lindsay version 5.0, the fifth member for Lindsay, in the 45th Parliament, voted in from position five on the ballot paper – some might say number five is alive,” Ms Husar said.

“In winning Lindsay we achieved the impossible, something they said could not be done. Lindsay is no longer a bellwether seat. And I am proud to be the first Labor woman to represent Lindsay.”

Ms Husar will now split her time between Canberra and the local electorate, where she has already started on-theground work with local residents.

In her maiden speech, she spoke emotionally about the impact of domestic violence on her life.

“Life for me hasn’t been without adversity. I have spent 29 out of my 36 years, both as a child and as an adult, living in domestic violence,” she said.

“If you want to know how to address the biggest challenge facing women and our children today you need to ask the people who have been affected.

Council Election

Labor dominates Labor wins seven seats on Council but one spot DALE DRINKWATER

he Labor Party has had a huge win in Penrith, securing seven of the 15 Councillor positions on Penrith Council.

The Weekender has crunched the numbers, and predicts the rest of Council will be made up of either five Liberal Councillors, and three independents; or six Liberal Councillors, and two independents.

In South Ward, Labor has secured both Mayor Karen McKeown and her second candidate, Kath Presdee, an industrial and employment lawyer and current National Legal Officer for the Australian Rail, Tram and Bus Industry Union.

Labor’s South Ward vote was up on 2012, and while the Liberal Party vote was down, they still secured Councillor Mark Davies and his second candidate, 23-year-old Joshua Hoole.

Mr Hoole has been working in media and communications in Cr Davies’ wife, State Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies’ office, and said he will continue to do so throughout the Council term.

hear and meet and address the needs, challenges and aspirations of the people of Penrith,” he told the Weekender.

Owner of Jim Aitken and Partners Real Estate, Councillor Jim Aitken is the fifth Councillor in South Ward, and is the ward’s only independent.

In East Ward, Labor received more votes than in the 2012 election, which secured three candidates, Councillor Greg Davies, Todd Carney and Ben Price.

Mr Carney ran in the 2015 State Election for the electorate of Mulgoa for Labor, and Luddenham local Ben Price is in the real estate game with his office based in Mt Druitt.

The Liberal Party vote was up in East Ward, delivering the final two positions to Councillors Tricia Hitchen and Bernard Bratusa.

Cr Bratusa moved to East Ward from representing South Ward last Council term, as he found a connection with the area after running for the eastern seat of Londonderry in the 2015 State Election.

In North Ward Labor’s vote was up and John Thain not only held onto his position, but even got his number two, 25-year-old Aaron Duke, across the line.

“A lot of people were talking about greyhounds and Nepean Hospital, and even WestConnex came up. I think it was about giving Mike Baird a whack.”

Independent Councillor Marcus Cornish, who turned his back on the Liberal Party this year secured a spot, but the Liberals did however, secure veteran Councillor Ross Fowler.

While the Liberal vote is up on 2012, Cr Fowler admitted there is negativity flowing around the Liberal Party across NSW. “Given last Council Election results, all Liberals got back except Ben Goldfinch who didn’t run, then we got an extra young bloke with Joshua Hoole,” he said.

Cr Fowler said it’s too close to call whether his Liberal number two, Glenn Gardiner will take the final position, or independent Councillor Kevin Crameri.

Penrith’s next Mayor will be decided when Council meets later this month.

Speculation is mounting that both KEY John Thain and Greg Labor Davies will get turns Liberal to lead the city at some stage over the Independent next four years.

Penrith’s cheapest petrol station How you can make sure you’re getting the best deal on fuel no matter what day you fill up DALE DRINKWATER

enrith motorists can save up to 40 cents per litre on petrol depending on where they fill up, and when.

Using the State Government’s new Fuel Check phone app, the Weekender monitored fluctuating fuel prices across Penrith over five working days, and found recurring trends among both E10 and Premium 98 petrol.

The cheapest overall petrol station from Thursday to Wednesday was 7-Eleven Penrith on Henry Street, with the most expensive being shared between stations on Castlereagh and Mulgoa Roads.

Thursday was the cheapest day when E10 could be purchased for 98.9 cents (c) per litre, and Premium 98 could be purchased for 107.9c per litre.

That is compared to the most expensive day, Friday, when E10 was no cheaper than 123.9c, and Premium 98 was no cheaper than 133.4c and up to 148.9c per litre.

Last Thursday, motorists would have paid up to 29c difference on E10 depending where they filled up, with Woolworths Kingswood the cheapest on 98.9c, and stations along Castlereagh Road more expensive on around 127c.

E10 on Friday delivered only 4c per litre difference across the board, with Budget South Penrith the lowest on 123.9c and petrol stations on Castlereagh Road among the highest, with the same situation for E10 on Monday.

Premium 98 on Monday was again 10c cheaper at 7-Eleven Henry Street than surrounding 7-Elevens, with the most expensive at BP Express on Castlereagh Road on 146.9c, 16c more than the cheapest.

On Tuesday, there was only a 6c difference between E10 prices at Budget South Penrith and the more expensive BP Jamisontown on Mulgoa Road of 123.9c.

Premium 98 was a different story however, with 7-Eleven Henry Street once again offering petrol 10c cheaper than the next at 127.4c, and between 13c and 16c cheaper than stations on Mulgoa Road and Castlereagh Road.

On Wednesday, E10 was around 118c across the board, with Premium 98 finishing up 10c per litre cheaper at 7-Eleven Henry Street than 7-Eleven High Street, and 16c cheaper than Coles Express on Mulgoa Road on 141.9c.

Man fined after assaulting his dog on busy Penrith street

A man caught “flogging” his puppy on a busy Penrith street has been found guilty of animal cruelty.

Leo Giuliano fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday after previously pleading not guilty to committing an act of cruelty against an animal.

The court heard the defendant was busted striking his 13-month-old American Staffordshire-cross in the face on February 25, after it bit him on the wrist when he attempted to sling it onto the back of his neck.

An independent bystander, Krystyna Pollard, was walking along Station Street towards Union Lane when she heard yelling behind her but told the court she thought nothing of it.

She said it wasn’t until she caught the words “don’t bite me” and heard a dog yelping that she “swung around”.

In her evidence, Ms Pollard told the court she was about 30 metres away when she saw Mr Giuliano crouching down and witnessed him punch the canine “multiple times” with his right fist before she sprang into action and ran towards the accused.

“I said ‘hey! hey! mate, you can’t do that’,” she said.

Getting little in the way of explanation and fearing for the dog’s welfare she reported the incident to police not long after.

The court heard Mr Giuliano, in his late 60s and an out-of-towner, had been walking around Penrith with the puppy for about one-and-a-half hours trying unsuccessfully to find where he parked his car.

He said it was a 42 degree day and the dog became “distressed”, despite giving it water and shade, and refused to walk, prompting him to attempt to sling it by all fours onto his shoulders to carry it.

The defendant, who chose to give testimony, conceded he hit the dog a minimum of three times in an “instantaneous reaction” when it would not let

go of his wrist, but insisted it was with an open palm.

He told the court he had initially intended to strike the dog with a closed fist, but thought better of it after remembering the dog was only a puppy.

Magistrate Greg Grogin said he found this particular part of the accused’s testimony “extremely interesting” and “curious” before deeming it “implausible and unacceptable” and finding the offence proved.

He ruled Mr Giuliano’s behaviour was “unreasonable, unnecessary and unjustifiable” and constituted a “beating”, despite accepting the canine had latched onto the accused’s left wrist.

Magistrate Grogin took into account he had no other matter of violence on his record and the fact he had no plans to recover the dog from the RSPCA when handing down his decision.

The dog was seized shortly after the incident when Mr Giuliano attended Penrith Police Station to report his vehicle missing.

“It was a spontaneous reaction but the wrong action,” Magistrate Grogin said.

He was convicted and fined $500.

Mother’s disapproval puts man on straight and narrow

A relapsed drug addict has told a court it was his mother’s disapproval that put a halt to his criminal ways.

Philip Edward Breeze, 41, faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘possess a prescribed prohibited drug’.

The court heard Mr Breeze was caught with 1.15g of cannabis leaf, two OxyContin tablets and 10 tablets of Xanax after he fell off the wagon just before Christmas last year following four-and-a-half years of being clean.

Mr Breeze said it was seeing tears in his mother’s eyes that got him back on the straight and narrow.

“Five weeks ago I stopped. Mum said she wants to be proud again,” he said.

Magistrate Greg Grogin said his relapse was “screaming out for his attention”.

“It’s going to be a hard battle if you’ve fallen off the wagon, but stick with it,” he encouraged.

He was convicted, fined $1,300 and ordered to enter into a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Two year driving ban for repeat offender

A disqualified driver has pleaded her case against a jail sentence, insisting she is “not a bad person”.

Alyssa Kovacic, 21, fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with driving while disqualified.

The makeup artist and hair stylist told the court she blamed her own stupidity for her poor decision making.

“I knew it was wrong,” she said.

“I shouldn’t have done it.”

Magistrate Greg Grogin questioned how he could be sure she wouldn’t reoffend, noting it was her fourth time driving when she shouldn’t have.

“I don’t want to go to jail,” a teary-eyed Ms Kovacic said after he informed her that was an option.

“I’m not a bad person. I didn’t do it for the wrong reasons.”

Magistrate Grogin said it goes to stupidity the first time someone gets caught, then it goes to criminality.

He said despite the personal turmoil and difficulties she faced at home, she also needed to comply with the law.

“There needs to be some discernible punishment due to your record,” he said.

She was convicted, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service in lieu of an $800 fine and barred from driving for two years.

Man gets his “once in a lifetime opportunity” from magistrate

Scott Anthony Cottrell has dodged a bullet after pleading guilty to driving while suspended.

Mr Cottrell appeared before Penrith

Local Court on Tuesday where his lawyer submitted the offence was “an honest mistake”.

His lawyer told the court Mr Cottrell was unaware he was suspended for six months as part of his good behaviour bond.

“Your record is hopeless – it doesn’t assist you at all,” Magistrate Greg Grogin said when summarising his findings.

Magistrate Grogin told the defendant in no uncertain terms that he was lucky to be walking away without conviction.

“I always say this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.

He was ordered to enter into a 12-month good behaviour bond.

12-month ban for father who collected son while drunk

A father who drove drunk to collect his son from the train station has been stripped of his licence for 12 months.

Garry Chicca fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with midrange drink driving and breach of bond.

The court heard Mr Chicca rushed to his son’s aid amid concerns he was being followed and was later arrested after doing a U-turn outside the train station.

The court heard the laser operator was nabbed drink driving several months earlier when he drove to assist his step-son after spending time at a Werrington pub.

However, extenuating circumstances meant he was given a Section 10 bond and avoided conviction.

Magistrate Greg Grogin suggested it might be necessary for the defendant to shelve his daily drinking sessions.

“You go to the pub every afternoon – it’s your ritual,” he said.

“Because of that ritual you’ve broken the law – twice.”

He was resentenced for the breach of bond, fined $600 and disqualified from driving for six months.

For the fresh offence, he was convicted, slapped with a $900 fine and banned from driving for 12 months.

Penrith: Man on the run after service station robbery

Police are calling for witnesses after a Penrith service station was robbed at knifepoint on Monday night, with the alleged offender still on the run.

At about 9pm on September 12, a man entered the Smith Street service station, armed with a 20cm knife.

The man began to threaten the employee and was demanding property.

“The hold up alarm was activated leading the male person of interest to flee the scene with a small amount of property,” a police spokesperson told the Weekender.

Police arrived at the scene a short time later and collected the details of the incident before conducting a canvas of the area.

The man couldn’t be located.

Police are urging any witnesses to the robbery to come forward.

Penrith: Teenager assaulted in bizarre road rage attack

A woman had her hair pulled and was allegedly punched in the face during a road rage incident last week.

At about 6.50pm on Tuesday, September 6, a 23-year-old Lethbridge Park woman was driving along High Street, Penrith, when she stopped at a red light.

The woman allegedly got out of her vehicle and approached a 17-year-old Cranebrook woman, who was the driver of the vehicle in front of her.

The pair exchanged words before the 23-year-old reached into the car through an open window and grabbed the victim’s hair.

After the encounter, the 23-year-old then allegedly punched the 17-year-old numerous times in the face.

Immediately after the incident, police who were in the area at the time stopped the woman and arrested her.

She was taken back to Penrith Police Station where she was given a future court attendance notice for ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

She is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, October 20.

The 17-year-old woman told police she doesn’t know what the incident was in relation to.

Colyton: Man arrested after cash and food stolen

A delivery driver was robbed in Colyton late last week, with money and food stolen.

At about 8.30pm on Thursday, September 8, an 18-year-old Colyton man made a phone order for food from a store in Colyton.

The delivery driver attended the address listed on the order, which was next to an alleyway.

The 18-year-old alleged offender was waiting for him and when the driver approached the premises, the man approached him.

The offender allegedly produced a knife and demanded cash from the delivery driver.

He complied and handed over an amount of money and food.

The 18-year-old ran off but was located a short time later by police.

He was charged with ‘robbery armed with offensive weapon’, and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, October 24.

St Marys: Man caught driving with suspended licence

A man was charged by police when they found he was driving on a suspended licence.

At about 10.10pm on Monday, September 5, police were patrolling Forrester Road, St Marys, when they stopped a vehicle.

Police had a conversation with the driver, a 32-year-old Werrington man.

Checks on his licence revealed he was a suspended driver.

He was charged with ‘drive, licence suspended’ and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, October 10.

5 schools across Londonderry, Penrith and Mulgoa are at 100 per cent capacity or above, according to the State Opposition.

And it doesn’t look like the pressure will be relieved any time soon.

Last week, NSW Premier Mike Baird committed $80 million to help western Sydney schools deal with increasing numbers of students.

However, not a single dollar has gone to a school in the Penrith region, including the school promised at Jordan Springs.

Mr Baird said the funding for the schools is part of a $1 billion boost over four years, with more announcements for western Sydney schools to come.

fearless attitude towards birds does not make you exempt from a magpie swoop during spring – they can strike anywhere at any time.

There is one website, however, that is providing a platform to identify ‘magpie hotspots’ that helps locals avoid the area, or enter at their own risk.

MagpieAlert.com is in full swing this magpie season, and has already received submissions from locals on where they got swooped, when, and how severe it was.

There have been 25 recorded magpie attacks across the Penrith Local Government area in 2016, including the latest at Werrington Lakes on September 8, at 2.30pm, where the user recorded no injuries.

“Went by bicycle through Werrington Lakes – a reserve for many birds. I was swooped twice in space of 15 minutes by two different magpies in different locations within the reserve,” said the user.

Another user faced off with a magpie on River Road, Emu Plains, just the day before, on September 7 at 1.30pm.

“Running along the river walk path, low swoop, nil contact,” Brooksy wrote.

There is not one specific time of the day that a magpie will strike, and no quiet suburban street is safe.

In 2016 alone, the site has recorded 2300 attacks and 300 injuries across Australia.

Attacks can be registered anonymously, or victims can login via Facebook to automatically see other attacks in their area.

If you desperately need to travel through a magpie hotspot and need to know how to protect yourself, there are

online tutorials such as how to cable tie your cycling helmet.

President of the Australian Veterinary Association, Dr Robert Johnson, said tolerance is the best policy when dealing with magpies.

“We need to appreciate that some magpies will defend their territory from intruders because of a natural instinct to protect their offspring,” he said.

“Other native birds that are also common culprits include butcher birds, kookaburras and plovers, but even invasive species like Indian Mynas can attack at this time of year.”

rontline Penrith police officers are set to receive mobile tablet devices which will simplify the process of issuing infringements and allow officers mobile access to police systems.

Over 900 devices from the Mobile Policing Program have been delivered to Local Area Commands across NSW under the government’s $36 million scheme.

Acting Crime Manager at Penrith Police Station, Detective Acting Inspector Doug Allen, told the Weekender accessing information will be a much faster process now.

“It will be easier and faster for our officers to access information while in the field – it’s a great idea,” he said.

Officers will be able to issue infringements electronically via email or mobile text message rather than having to return to the station.

Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, said the devices will aid police officers in the line of duty.

“These devices simplify the process of issuing infringements,” he said.

estern Sydney University (WSU) has the highest drop-out rate of any university in Sydney, but it makes no apology for offering more places than ever to students.

While WSU’s 14.11 per cent drop-out rate in 2014 is below the national average of 15.18 per cent, the figure has been steadily increasing since 2008, and is at its highest rate in 10 years.

21-year-old Claremont Meadows resident Saira Yousef quit her Bachelor of Communications degree at WSU’s Werrington South Campus after just two semesters, as she felt her units didn’t correlate with her desired career path. “Subjects, for example Writing Ecologies, had nothing to do with PR – it was such a waste of time,� she told the Weekender. “After one year it made me not want to choose that career path, so I applied to do nursing at the University of Technology.�

Now Ms Yousef said she’s racked up around $8,000 in university fees for classes she won’t use, because she felt she needed to attend university, and to do it as soon as possible.

The Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) attributed university

drop-out rates to a range of factors, including an overemphasis on higher education.

CDAA spokesperson, Rebecca Fraser, said it’s due to a combination of techniques used by universities to achieve maximum enrolments, and a lack of support for students to identify alternate pathways. “While it is important universities market their courses, it is important pathway guidance is offered by qualified professionals at the same time,� she said.

The figures from the Department of Education come after confidential documents were leaked in January revealing NSW universities admitted students with Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks (ATAR) as low as 30.

WSU was accused of admitting people with ATARs as low as 46 into medical science degrees, but they make no apologies for doing so. “[Our] College program enables students with lower ATARs to complete the first year of their degree with additional support and assistance, and these students perform strongly when going on to complete their degree with the university,� a WSU spokesperson said. “WSU will continue to be a university with a commitment to excellence and to providing opportunities to the people of western Sydney and beyond.�

The Federal Government is cutting $2 billion in funding for aged care, with the cuts targeting people in residential aged care with the highest care needs.

As one of Australia’s largest not-for-profit providers of aged care services, UnitingCare Australia is deeply concerned at the impact of these cuts on the health and wellbeing of frail older people. Our modelling shows that the average resident will have the funding to meet their needs cut by $6650 a year, and the frailest by as much as $18,000 a year. Of equal concern is the flow-on effect of funding cuts of

this size. Public hospitals will face even greater pressure as older people wait longer to access residential care, with aged care providers forced to reconsider admitting people with complex health needs. The aged care workforce will also suffer, as providers will be compelled to review, and potentially reduce, staffing levels. This will affect nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff and comes at a time of greatly increased demand for aged care services. People in residential aged care are already suffering from a range of conditions such as dementia, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and mobility impairment. They don’t need to suffer more as a result of these unfair cuts to aged care.

Is parking really that bad?

I accept that parking is an issue in some parts of Penrith, especially for commuters struggling to find spots at the train station in the mornings. However, I don’t see why everyone continues to moan about parking in Penrith in general. I go into the Penrith CBD at least four times a week and very rarely struggle to find a park that meets my needs. If I get really desperate, I park in Westfield or Judges Car Park.

Taking steps to end homelessness Annual WestCare dinner raises $85,000 to help fund project that aims to provide ‘safe sleeps’ JADE ALIPRANDI

estCare Community Services is working towards ending homelessness in the Penrith area, with over $85,000 raised at their annual fundraising dinner last week.

The focus of the fundraiser was the organisation’s 1000 Safe Sleeps project.

The aim of the project is to refurbish two two-bedroom units in Penrith that can be used for short term crisis accommodation in a bid to end homelessness in the Penrith area.

Held last Thursday, September 8 at The Coffee Club Nepean River, over 160 business people and community members attended the fundraiser.

Assistant Director at WestCare Community Services, Andrew Paech, told the Weekender it was a hugely successful night.

“It was an outstanding night – we had a great response from the wonderful community of Penrith,” he said.

“We’re very excited to have raised these funds which will now help us in continuing the 1000 Safe Sleeps project.”

Over 60 businesses contributed to the night with everything donated, including

the time of the staff at The Coffee Club Nepean River.

Mr Paech said he loves being a part of WestCare, and confirmed the fundraiser will return next year.

“At WestCare, we just love making a genuine difference in this community, particularly for those who are disadvantaged and vulnerable,” Mr Paech said.

Council’s Access Committee provides advice to Council about access issues and promotes the inclusion of people with a disability as full members of the community.

Following the success of Council’s two previous Disability Action Plans, we are updating our plans to respond further to the needs and interests of people with disability.

Strategies and actions to help in overcoming barriers to inclusion will be incorporated into Council’s planning for the next four years through the Penrith Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021.

The updated plan will better reflect the changing needs of our community and continue to improve the amenities and services we offer.

It will go on public exhibition and we expect the finalised version to be endorsed by Council in early 2017.

Heavy police presence at festival Defqon.1 is back at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) this Saturday, September 17, and while it’s only a one day music festival this year, police are pleading more than ever for patrons to stay safe.

With tragic deaths at the festival over the last few years, Inspector David Ralph of Penrith Local Area Command said the 24,000 expected attendees need to make the right decisions.

“This year is about people making the correct choices and not taking drugs,” he said.

“One death is one too many, so we hope people do the right thing and look after each other.”

Gates open at 10am and until close at around 11pm, there will be a strong contingent of user-pay police, including drug dogs, plus hundreds of security guards.

“We will have 200 police, and I think there’s about 150 to 200 security staff,” Inspector Ralph said.

“People will be screened and bags will be checked, we will have a heavy presence of drug dogs at the entry.”

hen I started my business, I had no financial backing. I was in a fortunate position of having some paid maternity leave and a partner who worked full-time. But I was faced with the challenge of building a business with resources other than money.

The first way I did this was to commit to covering my operating expenses only with the revenue I generated through my business. Although my partner was supportive of me starting a business, I also didn’t want the business to be a drain on our finances. Having no capital behind me forced me to be creative in generating income. It also made me appreciate every dollar that came in to the business, and gave me a great sense of pride that I built my business without relying on outside funding.

Marketing was the next area I had to work hard to cover with little or no money. These days, social media has enormous potential for free marketing for your business – generating trust and sharing your story on social media costs nothing. While it takes strategy

and well planned campaigns to do it well, you can gain the sort of valuable information that would have been almost impossible for small businesses to gather 10 years ago. But social media aside, there are still numerous low cost or free ways to market your brand (for some great ideas, read Permission Marketing or Purple Cow by Seth Godin).

And finally, I learnt to minimise my mistakes – or where I did inevitably make a mistake, I took the time to learn from it. Most of my policies and procedures have been developed from situations or mistakes. It has always been a priority for me to adjust my practices and sometimes it has resulted in far better ways to operate.

It is important to realise that money isn’t a necessity for business success.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to take your business forward. Learn to think outside the box and rely on creativity rather than finances to overcome obstacles. Your business will develop far more innovatively and you will save your business unnecessary expenditure in the process.

y predecessor, Michael Todd, passed on an article from a Western Australian blogger which discussed typical mistakes made during the start-up process.

Now I’m an optimist at heart and believe that instead of saying here are the things you shouldn’t do, we should model the actions we want to do. So here is a list of actions that you want to do, whether you want to do them, or not.

1. Understand what your product/ service does for your customer. You need to convince your customer that your product is for them. To do that you need to understand how your product/service will make your customer happy. And then reinforce the happy experience at all contact points. That means providing cheerful welcoming service at all times.

2. Charge for your skill, expertise, time, imagination. Underselling your service or your craft sends a very bad message to customers. That message is “my time is worth less than this product.” So prospective customers are more likely to turn

away. True story; one artist was selling her finished jewellery for $5 an item. This is the equivalent price of jewellery from a cheapo shop.

Why? The artist was charging only for the materials and not for the time in making the jewellery. She saw other people charging more for similar items and selling, so she increased her price four-fold and now her work sells very well. The increase in price sent a message that said “I spent a lot of time, love and effort on this” and people are happy to pay appropriately.

3. Seek advice and assistance. You are not in the business by yourself. Yes you may be a sole trader, but you are not a solo trader. Running a business takes a lot of different skills and abilities. Some of them you may not have. So if you feel that recording transactions is as dull as dishwater, find somebody who loves to get their hands wet. If you want a website, but you can’t html like a pro – find that pro!

Western Sydney University offers assistance Western Sydney University will be offering free HSC study sessions for students in Year 12 in the upcoming September school holidays.

From September 26 to October 7, Western Sydney University will provide the sessions at their Penrith and Lithgow campuses.

A

n old rivalry gets reignited this Saturday night when 1990 and 1991 Grand Finalists Penrith and Canberra do battle in the nation’s capital.

It’s a somewhat unexpected road trip after the Raiders were upset by Cronulla at GIO Stadium last weekend, forcing Ricky Stuart’s men into a do-or-die battle with a Penrith side that doesn’t look like it knows how to lose at the moment.

Penrith have conceded just three tries in their last 160 minutes of football but it’s the side’s attack that has everyone talking at the moment.

This is a side playing with an extraordinary amount of belief, and that can go a long way to winning football games.

Against the Bulldogs last Sunday after-

noon they put on a master class in attack – headed by superb vision by both Nathan Cleary and Matt Moylan, who ran riot over a Canterbury side that got very tired late in the contest.

Attack will be the word on everyone’s lips heading into this Saturday night’s match with the Panthers and Raiders two of the most electrifying sides in the competition, but it’s defence that will ultimately win this match.

Whichever side manages to stop the flow of points from the other and takes control of the middle of the ruck will get home.

Along the way, however, you can expect some incredible free-flowing football to take centre stage.

On the Penrith side of the fence it’s likely to come from powerhouse winger Josh Mansour, who ran for 275 metres last weekend, produced two line breaks, bagged a try and celebrated with a picture perfect roar that will adorn highlights videos and pictures for years to come.

Expect Bryce Cartwright to fire up, too.

After an awful missed tackle that led to Moses Mbye crossing for the first try of the game, he went into his shell and let others take centre stage. He’s become the ultimate ‘rocks and diamonds’ player but I’m tipping we might get a few diamonds on Saturday night.

As they’ve proven all year, the Raiders have plenty of attacking flair too. The everreliable Jarrod Croker is a point scoring machine, while Jack Wighton and Edrick Lee both constantly threaten to score tries out of nothing.

But the likely loss of Josh Hodgson is huge and plays right into Penrith’s hands.

He’s been one of Canberra’s best all season and is the glue that binds the side’s spine together. The Panthers meanwhile have managed to stay injury free and have named the same side for this Saturday night that overcame the Bulldogs.

It’s been decades since clashes between Penrith and Canberra featured the names Alexander, Simmons, Carter, Meninga, Stuart and Daley.

But with both sides surprising the critics this season and emerging as true forces not only this year but in the seasons to come, a rivalry that had slowly fallen away over the years is back in a big way.

First bragging rights of this exciting new Penrith-Canberra era are up for grabs at 7.45pm this Saturday.

spirits at the team’s recovery session at the Nepean Aquatic Centre on Monday morning. The boys shared plenty of laughs and were clearly soaking up the reality of the brilliant performance against the Bulldogs the night before. Speaking to the media after some time in the pool, captain Matt Moylan said the team was loving the ride of Finals footy. “We’re just enjoying our time at the moment,” he said. “For a lot of the boys I think they might have been a bit nervous going into that game being their first Finals experience.” (Pictured right: Bryce Cartwright).

A big majority of Mansour’s family support the Bulldogs, including his uncle who Josh arranged some tickets for last weekend. He was spotted proudly wearing his Bulldogs jersey, but with a nice new Panthers cap adorning his head. Well played.

contracts for superstar pairing Bryce Cartwright and Matt Moylan. The new contract for Moylan, who made his State of Origin debut earlier this season, is said to be worth in the vicinity of $2.8 million and would see him stay at the club until at least the end of the 2020 season.

Cartwright meanwhile is said to be eyeing off a contract that would see him stay in black until the end of 2021.

game at Penrith with the players and key coaching staff coming together in a circle after a win to enjoy a beer together. “We made it a little bit of a ritual,” Anthony Griffin told Fox Sports. “The last thing that we do after each home game is, just the team and the staff, spend a bit of time together which is nice.” The ‘beer circle’ is a problem for a couple of the players, however, who are non-drinkers. anthers star Bryce Cartwright says his first NRL Finals appearance was a good learning curve heading into this Saturday night’s Semi Final against Canberra.

While the Panthers got the goods in the end, they were on the back foot early when a defensive lapse by Cartwright saw Bulldogs half Moses Mbye post first points.

Cartwright’s early error, which fortunately didn’t prove costly in the end, resulted in captain Matt Moylan giving his five-eighth a major spray to pull him back into line.

“You can’t take it personally, I know I messed up there,” Cartwright told Extra Time.

“That’s Moyza’s role as captain to let me know that. I already knew that I did wrong but he has a right to do that.”

Cartwright, who is known for his ‘rocks and diamonds’ plays, said it’s important to shrug off an error quickly.

“I’ve never worried when I’ve messed up, I’ve never been that type of person to do that,” he said.

“I just worry about the next job at hand. I’ve learnt that you can’t worry about mistakes because they play on your mind.

“After a mistake I let it go and get back to playing good footy.”

While the second-rower turned half admits he’s been rather quiet of late, he’s put his recent lack of involvement in attack down to his red-hot skipper stealing the show.

“Moyza’s been playing outstanding, so I don’t have to do too much when he’s playing like that,” Cartwright said.

“I just need to keep steering the team around and look after that aspect.”

According to Cartwright, one of the major highlights of his first Finals game last Sunday was Penrith’s incredible supporter base.

“It gives us such a boost when we see the Panthers fans.

When we walked into Allianz Stadium the other day they all stood up and roared – that was crazy to see how much support we have,” he said.

Matagi’s still

ess than 24 hours after playing in his first Finals game – dismantling the once great Bulldogs pack in the process – Penrith Panthers prop Suaia Matagi was still buzzing with excitement the next morning.

Describing it as a dream come true, the 28-year-old Kiwi big man couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face during a post-game pool recovery session on Monday morning.

“That was my first Finals game, but one I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Matagi told Extra Time.

“I could feel the difference in the very first minute. I remember thinking to myself – this is what Finals footy is about.

“It was a dream come true to play in the Finals and to get the win against a very experienced side like the Bulldogs is a good feeling.”

With the Panthers down by just two at half-time, Matagi credited Penrith’s incredible backline for giving the side a much-needed edge in the second half.

Whether it was the coolness of Matt Moylan, the strength of Josh Mansour, the speed of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, the explosiveness of Waqa Blake or the energy of Tyrone Peachey, Penrith’s backline was not to be messed with.

“I must say a big credit to the backs, they really helped us out big time,” he said.

“From a forward’s point of view, they were the team. When we were blowing, those guys came and helped us out.

“That try between Mansour and Moyza was freakish – I’m still buzzing about that.”

With behemoths like the 123kg Junior Paulo and the 122kg Shannon Boyd opposing him, Matagi almost let slip a swear

word when Extra Time informed him of his big next match up.

“Yeah fu.. – yeah that’s definitely another big forward pack, it doesn’t get any easier,” he said.

“It’s shaping up to be another big battle again but one we go into with a lot of confidence and momentum thanks to last night’s (Sunday) win.”

Perfect

timing

few weeks ago Panthers prop Jeremy Latimore was running around in reserve grade, struggling to get a start in Anthony Griffin’s first grade team.

After recovering from a torn medial in his knee, the 30-year-old was looking at the prospect of playing the rest of the season in the Intrust Super Cup after his replacement, Sitaleki Akauola, made Latimore’s bench role his own.

If it wasn’t for the cruel twist of fate that saw Reagan Campbell-Gillard ruled out for the season with a back injury, Latimore wouldn’t have been involved in one of Penrith’s greatest Finals wins last Sunday afternoon and he certainly wouldn’t be preparing for a Semi Final this weekend against the Raiders.

Speaking with Extra Time, Latimore said he had to remain positive during his exile in reserve grade.

“The boys were going really well, so Hook put me in reserve grade. When Reg (Campbell-Gillard) got injured against the Gold Coast that was an opportunity for me to come back,” he said.

“You just never know what’s going to happen in rugby league, that’s why I tried to stay as positive as possible.

“I looked at it as a positive to go back

there (reserve grade) and get some minutes under my belt.”

In hindsight Latimore enjoyed the time in the lower grades as it gave his injury more time to heal.

“I ended up playing 45 minutes in reserve grade, which turned out to be really good for my knee,” he said.

“It’s all about timing in this game.”

Perfect timing means Latimore will now get the opportunity to take the field this Saturday night when the Panthers attempt to keep their Finals run alive in the nation’s capital.

Latimore said he expects the Raiders to be fired up after last week’s loss to Cronulla, and be boosted by the return of Blake Austin from injury.

“I don’t want to talk tactics but Blake’s missed a few weeks with a broken hand, so we’ll be silly if a few blokes don’t run at him,” he said.

Latimore knows that Austin is a key player for the green machine.

“Blake’s a talented player and he always gets himself up to play against Penrith. It will be a real challenge to control him as well as Aidan Sezer,” he said.

Meanwhile, Latimore has addressed recent rumours his time at Penrith could be up at season’s end – with a multi-year deal in the English Super League reportedly on the table.

“That’s news to me, but at the moment I have a contract here until 2017,” he confirmed.

“I’ve been here four years now and I love this place and I love this group of boys.”

There is certainly a spring in the step of Panthers fans around town this week after the sensational win on Sunday against the Bulldogs.

It appeared early on in the game that the Finals rookies, the Panthers , were going to be in for a really tough afternoon as the Bulldogs came out all guns blazing. The Panthers actually went into the half-time break just behind on the scoreboard, a predicament that on other occasions this season has been a big mental hurdle.

The Panthers really hit their stride in the second half though and it would be fair to say that they were dominant in most areas of the game.

Josh Mansour, Matt Moylan and Bryce Cartwright were composed and clinical in their display and you would not have thought that Nathan Cleary was playing in his first NRL Final.

I would really like to give special credit to Peter Wallace though, as it was his

exceptional composure and sheer determination to get a win on Sunday that really stood out for me.

Anthony Griffin deserves much credit for what he has achieved this year in his first season at the club and while there would have been many people questioning his decision to let both Jamie Soward and James Segyaro leave the club earlier in the season, clearly he was confident in his squad to deliver.

Griffin will be carefully managing his team this week, ensuring that they are both physically and emotionally ready for the much anticipated clash against the Canberra Raiders.

Wherever you watch the match this Saturday night, enjoy what is sure to be an outstanding contest!

Just to finish, I would like to congratulate the St Marys Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield teams on making it to the Grand Final Qualifier, which will be played this Sunday in Campbelltown.

enrith coach Anthony Griffin says there was no panic in the sheds at half-time despite his side being down 6-4 to Canterbury in last Sunday’s elimination Finals match.

Griffin was generally happy with the first 40 minutes and was confident the Panthers would get home.

“It was a really good performance.

I was really happy with the way we built into it and kept our cool with the ball,” he said.

“Eventually we found the points we needed.

“I was really happy at half-time.

It was a try each and we completed 20 from 21... so we just needed to go out and do the same thing.

“Defensively we were a little bit loose in that first half but we tightened that up in the middle.”

Panthers legend Greg Alexander said it was a game plan to keep the ball in play as much as possible, with Penrith going to ground on the last tackle on six separate occasions against the Bulldogs.

Griffin wouldn’t say it was a specific plan, but indicated it was part of Penrith’s bag of tricks.

“I’d much prefer us at times to make sure we finish a set off the way we want to finish it off,” he said.

“There’s no rule that says you have to kick it on the last play.”

he Penrith Panthers are just one win away from their second consecutive Holden Cup Grand Final after they demolished the Cronulla Sharks 28-6 last Sunday afternoon at Allianz Stadium.

Penrith welcomed back young gun Tyrone May for the clash, which saw both sides play conservative, defence-minded football in the first half.

Cronulla skipper Jayden Brailey opened the scoring early before Panthers

playmaker Dean Blore hit straight back with a try in the 22nd minute.

With both sides locked at 6-6 at the break, it was Cameron Ciraldo’s men who made the second half their own.

Penrith scored five unanswered tries in the second half through Reed Izzard, Daniel Brown, Wayde Egan, Ratu Tuisese and Braidon Burns.

Penrith will now enjoy this weekend off before taking on the winner out of tonight’s Semi Final between North Queensland and the Wests Tigers.

C

ountry music star Gord Bamford may have a hugely successful career in Canada, but in his birth country of Australia he’s still relatively unknown.

The three time winner of Male Artist of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards is onto his eighth album, but his latest – ‘Tin Roof’ – is the first to be released in Australia.

Gord left our shores at the age of five and, up until recently, had a strained relationship with his Australian father.

“I came over there when I finished high school and tried out for the baseball team there on the Gold Coast,” he said.

“I actually wanted to try to reunite with my dad but it didn’t go very well.”

After a rocky first attempt the musician returned to Australia a few years back with his wife and kids, and the pair managed to rekindle their relationship.

“I was able to put the past in the past and move on with getting to know my dad, so that was kind of cool,” he said.

Since then Gord’s father has had the chance to experience his son’s musical talent on stage in the heartland of country music.

“He came over to Nashville for Christmas and spent about six weeks with us,” he said.

“We toured in Canada so he got a chance to see what I do and it definitely was a great moment, obviously for him and myself.”

Gord’s current focus is on his relationship with the Australian country music scene.

After kicking off his first official tour Down Under with a spot on the Gympie Music Muster line-up in August, the country music star will be heading to the Evan Theatre next month for a mini country music festival called ‘This Crazy Life’.

“Australia intrigues me more than anything,” Gord said.

“Being the country where I was born and having family there; it’s just a great place to be so I’m just really focused on that right now.”

It took a lot of hard work to get where he is now and Gord’s not afraid to do the same in his country of birth.

“I’ve had a lot of success but it’s been with lots of effort,” he said.

“Building a great team of people is key and we’ve been able to do that in Canada, so I’m looking forward to building those relationships in Australia as well.

“It’s a big market and I’m excited to get in there and be part of it.”

DVD Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows Rated PG // KATE REID Everyone’s favourite pizza loving turtles are back with the release of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows’ on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

Once again it’s up to Michelangelo (Noel Fisher), Donatello (Jeremy Howard), Leonardo (Pete Ploszek), and Raphael (Alan Ritchson) to save the day against the supervillain Shredder (Brian Tee).

When Shredder escapes custody he teams up with mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), and henchmen Rocksteady (Stephen ‘Sheamus’ Farrelly) and Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams), to hatch a plan to take over the world.

But it’s not just Shredder and his crew that the Turtles must take on;

the notorious Krang (Brad Garrett) is also causing trouble for the foursome.

Megan Fox and Will Arnett are back in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows’ as April O’Neil and Vernon Fenwick.

The pair are joined by newcomers Laura Linney as Chief Vincent and Tyler Perry as Baxter Stockman.

Reviews for ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’ haven’t been great, with movie review site Rotten Tomatoes describing the film as an improvement on its predecessor but still not up to the quality of the comics.

Regardless, this is a film that ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ fans won’t want to miss.

When Captain ‘Sully’ Sullenberger did the seemingly impossible and landed a damaged plane on the Hudson River in 2009 the world was watching.

So it’s really no surprise that the heroic story has become the subject of the new film ‘Sully’, directed by Clint Eastwood.

On January 15, 2009 Captain Sully (Tom Hanks) saves the lives of 155 passengers on US Airways flight 1549 after a flock of geese disable both engines.

The experienced pilot manages to glide the plane to safety on the freezing waters of the Hudson, but as the praise rolls in from the media and the public an investigation into the events of that day threaten to destroy Sully’s reputation.

The supporting cast includes Aaron Eckhart as First Officer Jeffrey Skiles,

and Laura Linney as Lorraine Sullenberger.

Expectations are high for this film, understandably considering the pairing of Hanks and Eastwood.

So far it looks like those expectations have been met, with critics praising the film as a worthy tribute to an everyday hero.

hen Peter Rymill, fourth generation descendant of founder of Coonawarra wine region John Riddoch, decided that he wanted to build his own winery to make wine from the grapes he was already growing on his own Coonawarra vineyard, he set himself a strange goal.

Also undertaking a professional course in winemaking, he said he would not build that winery until he had proven his skills by winning a gold medal at a wine show – and then went on to do more than that by taking out a trophy at the 1987 Australian Small Winemakers Show. And yes, then building his Rymill Coonawarra Winery.

Today Peter has retired and it is his son John who is a great, great grandson of old John Riddoch who began it all at Coonawarra in 1890, and is Managing Director of Rymill Coonawarra. And amongst the many labels John oversees is The Yearlings, a range that really does seriously over-deliver in flavour and value at just $15.

One to note: Victoria’s Toolangi Vineyards are interesting in that as well as having their own vineyards they also source additional fruit when they find exceptional quality available from other growers, and then contract to have it made by local makers they consider the very best at handling specific varietals.

And their just-released 2014 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir (pictured) reflects the benefits of this philosophy: fruit was 100 per cent off their own Dixons Creek vineyard that had enjoyed almost perfect growing conditions. It’s great value at $28.

For a food lover the supermarket can be paradise. But for others grocery shopping can be frustrating.

This week I thought I’d offer some tips that I’ve learned over the years – both as a consumer and a nutritionist – to help make healthy food choices during your next trip to the shops.

To start with, never ever shop when you’re hungry, in my experience this is a recipe for disaster.

These are the types of foods that make up the majority of a healthy diet.

When purchasing fresh fruit and vegetables, it helps to look for what’s in season and what’s grown in Australia.

This way you’re less likely to end up with produce that’s been sitting in cold storage for long periods of time.

The next thing that I think many of us overlook when shopping is that it pays to be curious. Variety is one of the keys to a balanced diet, so while we all have our favourite foods it’s a good idea to try new things, especially when it comes to fresh produce.

One of the areas of the supermarket that can be most misleading is the health food aisle. Don’t get me wrong, there are nutritious options hiding in there, but there’s also a heap of clever marketing that can disguise high fat and high sugar products as ‘health’ foods. If in doubt read the nutrition panel and take particular notice of serving size.

Sale items are another aspect of grocery shopping that can have a hidden downside.

Stocking up your pantry when things are on sale, especially snack foods, can end up being a little too tempting if you tend to be an over-eater.

Remember, saving a dollar here and there won’t save you money if you end up eating more food in the process.

Lastly if confectionery isn’t a ‘must purchase’ item on your shopping list then skip the aisle altogether. No one ever gets out of that aisle lolly-free!

The most common and well researched biomechanical change that occurs in most patellofemoral pain syndrome knee pain presentations is the inability to activate the gluteal muscles.

As a result, the pelvis drops on opposite side to the weak gluts, placing increased tension on the ITB on the outside of the leg and therefore pulls the knee cap outward.

As the pelvis drops the hip joint will collapse and roll inward or into internal rotation, placing further strain on the knee joint and the tracking of the knee cap.

Further inward rolling of the foot causes the shin and knee to internally rotate and contributes to the strain on the knee joint.

A key factor in patellofemoral pain syndrome is the weak and poorly activating hip and thigh muscles that inadequately supports the knee and knee cap.

araplegic rower and Penrith local Erik Horrie has won Silver at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. The 36-year-old, who was competing at his second Paralympics, finished second in the A5 Single Sculls event last Sunday.

Horrie qualified for the Final in first place following an excellent Heat which saw him finish with a time of 4:45.87.

During the Final, Horrie bettered his qualifying time by three seconds (4:42.94) to take out the Silver medal behind the Ukraine’s Roman Polianskyi.

Horrie, who became a paraplegic following a motor vehicle accident at age 21, also won Silver at his debut Paralympics in London in 2012.

Meanwhile, fellow local rower and vision impaired athlete Kate Murdoch has narrowly missed out on a medal in Rio. Competing in the LTA Mixed Cox 4 event, the South Penrith local and her Australian teammates finished fourth in the Heats to qualify for the Repechage Round.

During the Repechage, Australia put in a solid performance but narrowly missed out on a spot in Final A by 0.80 seconds, with Canada and South Africa the other countries progressing through to the medal round.

Competing in Final B (non-medal round), Murdoch and Australia got off to a great start and were never headed – wining in a time of 3:30.59.

In the end, Great Britain took out the Gold with USA finishing with Silver and Canada awarded the Bronze.

In other Paralympic news, Mulgoa resident and para archer Jonathon Milne was still in line for a medal when the Weekender went to print on Wednesday night.

The 30-year-old, who is Australia’s first athlete since 2004 to compete in archery at the Paralympics, reached the Round of 32 after finishing ninth (672 points) in the Ranking Round last Sunday.

If Milne managed to progress to the Final of the Men’s Individual Compound – Open event, it was scheduled to take place on Thursday evening.

n what’s understood to be a state-first, Penrith Baseball Club is set to unveil a special needs team which gives kids with Autism and other intellectual disabilities the chance to play baseball.

15 players aged from four-years-old to 18 have already signed up to the unique community initiative, that Penrith Baseball Club head coach Shane Summersford believes is a first for baseball anywhere in NSW. “No other clubs are doing it – the families are over the moon,” he told the Weekender.

The premiership-winning coach said the idea for a special needs team came about after friends notified him about the lack of sporting options available to kids with special needs.

“I’ve got some friends who have kids with special needs and they don’t have many sports available to them,” Summersford said.

“Baseball is quite unique and is a great sport for hand/eye coordination and interacting with others.

“We’ve had a great response so far.”

“We wanted to offer something back to the community by getting these kids into baseball and making our club more

“Once we build that up at Penrith, I’d love to expand it across the rest of the greater western Sydney area.”

The special needs team are expected to play at every Penrith home game during the upcoming baseball season.

Meanwhile, the Penrith Baseball Club has also introduced a women’s first grade team for the first time in years.

Last Saturday afternoon the new Panthers women’s side kicked off the 2016 Baseball NSW season against Blacktown Workers.

Summersford said the club have always wanted to return to the first grade women’s competition.

“We had a team a couple of years ago but the calibre of players we had weren’t up to standard,” he said.

“This year Stan Robson will coach the side and he’s managed to attract plenty of talented players to Penrith.”

eonay’s Jessica Fox has capped off the 2016 canoe slalom season in style, with victory in the K1 at the final ICF World Cup in Tacen, Slovenia.

One day after the dual Olympic medallist finished with silver in the C1, Fox stunned a red-hot field to post a comprehensive victory in the year’s final World Cup event.

Fox finished in 77.55 seconds, which was 2.28 seconds ahead of Austria’s Corinna Kuhnle, with Great Britain’s Fiona Pennie a further 0.13 seconds behind in third.

Speaking after the race, the 22-year-old was over the moon with the result.

“I’m really, really happy with that race,” Fox said.

“I’m so happy to take the win on that course. It was really tight and I knew there was no room for error, so I just gave it everything and I’m happy to take the win.”

Victory in the K1 would’ve tasted sweet for Fox after failing to reach the final during last week’s World Cup in Prague.

The Penrith Emus have announced a new Head Coach to look after their Shute Shield side next season.

It means Jeremy Paul has left the club after just one year at the helm.

Julian Huxley will take over from 2017 and will be tasked with trying to drag the Emus off the bottom of the table.

Huxley brings with him a wealth of experience from over 10 years in Super Rugby with the Brumbies, Reds and Rebels. He has also represented Australia at both 7’s and 15’s Rugby World Cups.

“I’m excited to take on the challenge.

It’s widely known that the Penrith region is the sleeping giant of Australian Rugby,” Huxley said.

“I’ll go on holiday with Mathieu... we’ll spend some time with family and then get back home to Australia,” she said.

The Western Sydney Wanderers ended their pre-season trip to Japan with a 3-0 win against J2 League side JEF United at the Japanese club’s training base on Monday afternoon.

“Even though golf’s an individual sport, it’s good to be in a team environment and learning off others,” he said.

“The elite coaches give you great tips and you get to practice on some of the best courses. I’ve got a lot out of the Academy.”

Also a member of the Academy is Joshua’s younger brother Blade, who Joshua uses as motivation when out on the course.

“Blade and I practice every day together,” he said.

“It’s good having someone to challenge yourself out there.”

With a few more major tournaments to come in 2016, Joshua hopes a career as a professional golfer is well within his sights.

“I’d like to play on the PGA Tour, which is the biggest tour in the world,” he said.

“I’m currently in some pretty good squads that’ll help get me on the right path and show me the way.”

And to think Joshua would never have picked up a putter or a seven iron had it not been for his unique living arrangements.

“If we didn’t move to the golf course, I have no doubt I wouldn’t be playing today,” he said.

“I can thank my parents for that.”

he Greater Western Sydney Giants were victorious just once in season 2013 – next weekend they’ll play for a spot in the 2016 AFL Grand Final.

It’s certainly been a rollercoaster few years since the Giants entered the AFL competition back in 2012, but not even the most optimistic of fans would’ve imagined the situation their beloved side is in now.

Last Saturday afternoon, in front of a packed house of more than 60,000 at ANZ Stadium, the GWS Giants put up a near perfect performance to crush crosstown rivals and minor premiership winners the Sydney Swans 91-55.

Speaking after the match, a happy but subdued Giants coach Leon Cameron said his side’s strong defence is what won it for them.

“I thought the best part about our game was that we tackled really well, and that’s the thing that was probably a question mark over us coming in,” he said.

“We knew that the Swans were a really tough tackling side, and we knew that it was going to be on, and it was.

“We thought there’s only one way [to approach it] and that’s to hit it head on,

Giants forward Jeremy Cameron, who kicked four goals in the 36-point victory, said confidence around the club was at an all-time high.

“It’s surreal but we have a lot of trust in each other and a lot of belief inside the club, so we’ll just continue to do the things that we have been doing all year,” he said.

Last Saturday’s Qualifying Final was the 23-year-old’s first post-season game of his career.

Cameron said he received plenty of

feedback on how to handle the occasion before and after the game.

“A lot of guys [in the team] hadn’t played in a Finals game, it was good to get feedback from the guys who had,” he said.

“The one thing we got from the feedback was try and stay as calm as possible and just have fun. I think when you are enjoying your football you play good football.”

The Giants will enjoy this weekend off before hosting a Preliminary Final at Spotless Stadium.

Around the grounds GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks have lost their opening game of the Gridiron NSW Division 1 competition.

Down just 9-7 at the half, the Ducks were outclassed by the UNSW Raiders in the second half, ultimately losing 26-7.

However, it wasn’t all bad news for the Ducks with their Colts team getting the narrow win over the Raiders 7-6.

This weekend both sides will take on the UTS Gators.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have got the new baseball season off to a good start, defeating Blacktown Workers 10-5 in Round 1 of the NSW State Baseball League.

The Panthers will now aim for back to back victories when they take on Baulkham Hills in Round 2.

SOFTBALL: Congratulations to the Penrith City Softball Association U13 Boys representative team after they finished runners-up at the 2016 U13’s State Championships last weekend.

Meanwhile, Penrith Softball’s U13 Girls representative team also performed well in the same competition, finishing equal third.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Penrith Panthers youngsters Lindsay Smith and Sean O’Sullivan have capped off a remarkable season in the best way possible, winning major junior representative awards at the prestigious Brad Fittler Medal on Monday night.

Smith took out the U16’s Player of Year Award while O’Sullivan was named U18’s Player of the Year.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers are into the Grand Final in all three grades after an incredible day saw the club win all of their semi-finals.

With Sydney FC also qualifying, it will be a Sydney Derby in every grade to decide the U18, U20 and NPL2 Championships this Saturday.

Leichhardt Oval will play host to Grand Final Day with tickets available via pre-purchase through Football NSW. No tickets will be available at the gate.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers and Westfield have renewed their partnership for a further two seasons and will celebrate with a unique blitz across the region.

The renewed agreement will see the Westfield logo remain on the front of shorts as well as host the Wanderers’ players when they visit all five Westfield centres in western Sydney.

Held throughout the first week of the September school holidays, up to six Wanderers players will visit a different centre each day with Westfield Penrith enjoying their visit on Wednesday, September 28.

Golf star on the rise hen your Glenmore Park home backs onto Penrith Golf Course, you almost feel obliged to give the sport a crack.

That was the case for 17-year-old St Dominic’s student Joshua Gadd, whose parents bought a property neighbouring the popular local course when he was 11.

It didn’t take long before Joshua’s dad introduced him to golf – and he hasn’t looked back.

Earlier this month Joshua’s golf game soared to new heights when he was announced as Golf Athlete of the Year at Western Sydney Academy of Sport’s Annual Athlete Dinner and Awards Night.

Speaking with the Weekender, Joshua said he was very proud to win the coveted award.

“I’ve been with the Academy for three years, so it’s pretty special to know that all the hard work is finally paying off,” he said.

Joshua beat out 12 others to be named Golf Athlete of the Year after an outstanding 12 months that saw him win the State Age Junior Championships and finish fourth at the Singha World Junior Championships in Thailand.
