abor-aligned Councillor Karen McKeown is expected to win Penrith’s Mayoral Election on Monday evening.

As the Weekender revealed nearly 12 months ago, a “secret” deal that would have installed Kevin Crameri as Mayor for 2015-2016 has been torn up, much to the dismay of Cr Crameri and veteran Councillor Jim Aitken, who would have been Mayor for 2014-15 had the deal not collapsed.

The Weekender revealed on September 26 last year that Cr McKeown would become Mayor for 2015-16. It appears unlikely there will be any changes to that prediction.

Cr McKeown has confirmed she has nominated to stand for Mayor at the election on Monday night.

“Yes, it is my intention, I’ve already submitted my nomination,” she said.

However, Cr McKeown admits the Mayoral position may not go uncontested and there may yet be further twists.

Cr Crameri said he will not vote for Cr McKeown, and confirmed an Independent will stand against the agreement.

“I will be voting for who is not in the Labor-Liberal coalition.”

Councillor Marcus Cornish also refuses to vote for Cr McKeown, but conceded there’s a good chance she will end up as Mayor.

Cr Cornish said he would vote for Cr Aitken if he ran for Mayor, but Cr Aitken

denied he will be running and suggested possibly not even voting.

“I can’t vote Labor, and if a Liberal stood up I wouldn’t either, I would restrain from voting,” Cr Aitken said.

Cr Maurice Girotto said he will not vote for the deal that has been brokered between Liberal and Labor.

“The Mayor deserves to be there on their own right, not through a dirty brokered deal. I won’t be voting for that deal,” he said.

Despite this, the Weekender understands Cr McKeown will still have the numbers to secure the city’s top job, taking over from current Mayor, Ross Fowler.

However, the Deputy Mayor role is less than concrete.

Liberal-aligned Mark Davies was tipped to secure the role, but he will not confirm whether or not he will run.

It has also been suggested that Cr Fowler may put his hand up for the Deputy role.

Greens Councillor Michelle Tormey confirmed she will vote for Cr McKeown and nominate herself for Deputy Mayor.

“If nobody supports my nomination I will have to see who else, besides the Liberals, is nominated,” she said.

Turnbull will never escape stigma of knifing a sitting Prime Minister The Liberal Party displayed hypocrisy of the highest order on Monday night when it knifed a sitting Prime Minister, ending Tony Abbott’s two year reign in the top job and showing total disrespect to the Australian public who in their vast majority believe that Prime Ministers should see out their full term.

Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership will be forever tarnished by the actions of September 14, 2015.

Like Julia Gillard, he will never escape the fact that he led a revolt against a sitting Prime Minister. It will define his leadership.

It is nothing short of embarrassing that Australia has not had a Prime Minister see out a full term since John Howard nearly a decade ago.

And the reason for that remains that politicians believe it is their right, and seemingly their priority, to pick the leader of the country.

Officially, that is true – after all we do vote for a local member on election day and they are empowered to then pick the leader – but let’s not pretend for one moment that the leader of the party doesn’t play a significant role in determining who people vote for.

If they didn’t, we wouldn’t be changing Prime Ministers as if we’re playing musical chairs at a six-year-old’s birthday party.

If they didn’t, Tony Abbott wouldn’t have made more than half a dozen appearances in Lindsay during the 2013 election campaign.

We now face the lead-up to the next election with two leaders who carry the stigma of overthrowing Prime Ministers that the public put their trust in.

Mr Turnbull, who I believe will lose an enormous amount of respect following his callous move on Mr Abbott on Monday, and Bill Shorten, who was the man pulling the strings when Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard were knifed – by each other.

How can either of them possibly go to the next election and legitimately ask for the trust and

faith of the Australian people? How can either of them keep a straight face when promising stability and good government, which presumably they will. How can either of them be believed if they claim that the days of leadership rumblings are over?

This is a very sad time in Australian politics. A time that lacks true leadership and vision from either party and instead appears dominated by egotistical machine men (and women) in Canberra who fail to learn lessons of the past.

After the debacle of the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd years, how did we possibly end up here? How did we possibly reach a situation where the Liberal Party itself dumped a sitting Prime Minister two years in, and in the process jumped into the gutter with Labor?

This should not be what politics is about.

Mr Turnbull has always wanted to be Prime Minister. He is a successful Australian who has an impressive background and is obviously extremely ambitious.

He is articulate, persuasive and has always presented as a man with strong leadership skills.

To be honest, there is every indication he will make a bloody good Prime Minister.

But like Julia Gillard, he will never escape the stigma of how he got the job.

And the public will now know that it’s possible the Liberals will dump a leader. The trust has been lost.

After the Labor fiasco, we needed to escape the selfish, opportunistic period of politics we found ourselves in. On Monday, the Liberal Party only maintained it.

The best line of the week came from Mr Abbott, who said on Monday night: “I firmly believe that our party is better than this, that our government is better than this and by God, that our country is so much better than this.”

Turns out his party, our government and our country wasn’t better than that after all.

Turnbull rolls Abbott for top job, but did he have Lindsay MP’s support? @troydodds

indsay MP Fiona Scott started Monday with a stroll around the nation’s capital, posting a photo on social media with the caption: “Beautiful Spring morning in Canberra”.

It gave no indication of the extraordinary day that was to come.

Some 12 hours later, she was locked in a Liberal party room meeting watching Tony Abbott’s Prime Ministership come to its bitter and controversial conclusion.

Ms Scott is refusing to confirm whether she backed Mr Abbott, who spent a significant amount of time by her side during the 2013 election campaign, or switched her allegiance to Malcolm Turnbull, who eventually won the party room ballot and emerged as Australia’s 29th Prime Minister.

It is likely that Mr Turnbull gives Ms Scott the best chance of retaining Lindsay at the next election.

The tight margin may have been eclipsed if poor polling continued under Mr Abbott’s leadership.

“I am still so optimistic about the future of our country and in particular our region,” Ms Scott said.

“I am confident Malcolm Turnbull will continue in the work to inspire our

Penrith: Drunken group arrested and charged

Penrith: Warning ahead of popular music festival

A group of people were arrested at Penrith last week after they allegedly refused to leave a licensed premises on Mulgoa Road.

Staff asked them to leave the premises at around 11.50pm on Friday, September 11 as they were allegedly too intoxicated.

The group allegedly refused and started to jump on the fixtures at the premises and allegedly spit at staff members. Police were called to deal with the group but on arrival, one officer had a drink thrown on him.

Five people were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station and were charged with ‘common assault’ and ‘affray’.

A 24-year-old female, a 29-year-old male, a 20-year-old male, an 18-year-old male and a 32-year-old female are due to appear at Penrith Local Court on October 7.

Officers from Penrith Local Area Command will be out in full force this weekend for the annual Defqon.1 music festival, held at Penrith’s Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Grant Healey has warned against the use of drugs at the festival.

“There’s just no quality control when it comes to these substances – you just never know what you are taking,” he said.

“This alone significantly increases the risks of an overdose. If your friend is overdosing you need to ring the police and the ambulance straight away; you won’t get in trouble, we just want to help.”

The festival is an over 18s event and begins at 11am on Saturday, September 19.

Penrith: Panthers evacuated after fire in hotel

Jordan Springs: Man attacked as group causes trouble

Firefighters attended Penrith Panthers Leagues Club complex on the weekend after a fire broke out.

It’s understood a security guard saw smoke coming from the third floor leading patrons, guests and staff to be evacuated.

Fire and Rescue NSW were able to locate a fire in a basement, believed to be a laundry area, and were able to extinguish it.

“The fire was under control and the extent of the damage isn’t too severe,” a spokesperson for the Mercure Hotel said.

Firefighters remained on the scene carrying out their duties. There were no reports of injuries from the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a group of males were allegedly seen to be making trouble while walking down a residential street, one man attacking a resident in the process.

At about 1.30am on Sunday, September 13, a group of males, believed to be between 20 and 25-years-old, were seen to be banging and chucking items while they walked down Northbridge Street in Jordan Springs.

A resident then approached the group where a fight ensued and the resident was allegedly attacked.

Local police are appealing for information, contact Penrith Police Station on 4721 9444.

Passionate, humble, honourable Lindsay MP pays tribute to Abbott as he reflects on two years leading the nation TROY DODDS

indsay MP Fiona Scott says she has mixed emotions about what unfolded in Canberra on Monday, and has paid tribute to ousted Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

Mr Abbott was a central figure in Ms Scott’s 2013 election campaign, visiting Lindsay on numerous occasions and helping her unseat Labor’s David Bradbury.

“Politics is a tough calling, and few have worn the slings and arrows with the enduring courage, resilience and dignity like Tony Abbott,” Ms Scott said.

“Tony is a very decent person, a passionate, humble and honourable man. It saddens me many Australians believed a caricature of Tony, rather than getting to know the real man.”

As the Liberal Party descended into the same farce that crippled Labor, a dignified Mr Abbott waited until lunchtime on Tuesday to speak publicly about being ousted from the top job.

He made it clear that unlike Kevin Rudd, he wouldn’t be causing any issues for the new Prime Minister.

“Leadership changes are never easy for our country,” Mr Abbott said.

“My pledge today is to make this change as easy as I can. There will be no wrecking, no undermining, and no sniping.

“I have never leaked or backgrounded against anyone and I certainly won’t start now. Our country deserves better than that.”

Mr Abbott said job creation, dumping Labor’s “bad taxes”, infrastructure programs, stopping the boats and signing Free Trade Agreements with Japan, Korea and China were among the highlights of his time as Prime Minister.

“The great privilege that I have had is to see the wonder of this country like few others and I want to thank the Australian people for giving me the honour to serve,” he said.

“Yes, this is a tough day, but when you join the game you accept the rules. I have held true to what I believed and I am proud of what we have achieved over the past two years.”

He thanked his family, and admitted that his government didn’t always get it right.

“Of course, the Government wasn’t perfect. We have been a Government of men and women, not a Government of gods walking upon the earth,” he said.

“Few of us, after all, entirely measure up to expectations.”

Police investigate hacking allegations Students who allegedly tried to alter HSC marks will still be able to sit their major exams next month JADE ALIPRANDI

number of students from Penrith High School have allegedly tried to one-up the school’s computer system after they hacked into it to change their current HSC marks.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the hacking occurred when a small group of students obtained a teacher’s login details for the school’s online database.

It’s understood a comprehensive investigation has been launched into the alleged issue. “Penrith High School has taken appropriate disciplinary action against a small number of students who accessed the computer systems using a teacher’s login,� the spokesperson said.

It’s unknown whether the marks were actually altered and what the disciplinary action entails, but the students are however, still going to sit their final HSC examinations at the school when they begin on October 12.

The marks the students allegedly tried to change represent 50 per cent of their final HSC result.

parents that the correct and true marks will be applied and that no student will be disadvantaged. “The school is looking into the matter and is working with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) as well as police on the matter,�

the Department of Education spokesperson said.

Penrith High School was ranked in the top 35 schools in NSW after 148 students sat last year’s exams.

Penrith High School was contacted by the Weekender but a representative was

unable to comment and passed on our queries to the Department of Education.

It remains unknown how the students obtained the teacher’s login details.

South Penrith man to front court after sickening attack on puppy

Industry leaders urge local students to aim for the stars

man who allegedly punched and kicked his dog in front of horrified witnesses has been charged and will front court next week.

At about midday on Sunday, September 13, a member of the public allegedly saw a man punching his dog to the face after he placed him in a headlock.

The incident happened in South Penrith.

“He allegedly continued to punch and kick the six-month-old Staffordshire Terrier, causing him to yelp,” a police spokesperson said.

The dog’s owner, a 36-year-old man, then allegedly became aggressive towards the witness when he attempted to intervene, making repeated threats towards the man.

Officers from Penrith Local Area Command attended the scene and commenced inquiries.

The 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘cruelty to an animal’ and ‘intimidation’.

Officers seized the dog and took him to a vet for assessment.

The dog is now in the care of the RSCPA with investigators seeking an order from the court regarding the future care of the Staffordshire Terrier puppy.

“The dog is doing well, with no visible injuries, but he will continue to be monitored by RSPCA NSW veterinarians,” an RSPCA spokesperson said.

In the 2013-14 year, RSPCA Inspectors investigated over 58,500 complaints of cruelty reported by members of the public, according to their annual report, mostly in relation to dog, cat, horse and livestock welfare, an increase of almost 9000 reports from the previous year.

RSPCA NSW Chief Inspector, David OShannessy said there was no excuse when it comes to animal cruelty.

“The idea that people in charge of animals would physically restrain and assault them, with absolutely no regard for the injuries, pain, distress and suffering that might be inflicted as a consequence of these attacks, is disgusting,” he said.

The maximum penalty for committing an act of cruelty upon an animal is a $5500 fine as well as the possibility of six months imprisonment.

The man was given bail and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, September 21.

Local residents took to social media last weekend to condemn the man’s actions and call for a tough penalty.

RSPCA NSW is urging everyone to remain vigilant in reporting acts of animal cruelty and to contact the RSPCA.

Girls in Science forum at the University of NSW last week encouraged local young women to aim for the stars.

Last week the winners of the 2015 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Australia and New Zealand Fellowships spoke with 300 students, including 40 from Jamison High School and St Marys Senior High School.

The Fellowship winners were named the night before the forum, and included cognitive neuroscientist Dr Muireann Irish, marine scientist Dr Jodie Rummer and geologist Dr Christina Riesselman.

Dr Shari Breen, an astronomer with CSIRO in Sydney, is the fourth Fellowship winner and spoke with the Weekender about the importance of providing an identity to young women interested in a career in science.

“When people think of a scientist, they think of an old man,” she said.

“It’s really important to provide that identity to science, that we are what science looks like, so young women have someone to look up to.”

Dr Breen said the day provided valuable insight into the opportunities a career in science can offer, and how to get there.

“We all shared our stories of how we

Since finishing her PHD at the end of 2010, Ms Breen has been researching how big stars form, and said her career was hard to reach, but rewarding.

“It’s all tied up in the mystery of the universe. We get to see things and know things that other people don’t, and get to use telescopes to uncover things perhaps no one has ever seen before,” she said.

Vast majority of home NRL games will be played at Penrith Stadium TROY DODDS

anthers boss Phil Gould has confirmed that the club will play the vast majority of its home games in Penrith for the foreseeable future, alleviating the concerns of fans who were concerned after the release of the State Government’s stadium plan.

There had been speculation that Penrith may be forced to move games to a refurbished Parramatta Stadium or even to ANZ Stadium at Homebush, which will also undergo an upgrade as part of the State Government’s plan.

But in his Sun Herald column last weekend, Gould declared the Panthers would be going nowhere. “... the vast majority of Panthers home games will always remain at Penrith as we work with the NRL while the government delivers its stadium plan,” he said.

“The Panthers are taking one of our home games to Bathurst each season as part of our strong commitment to servicing our NSW Country relationships. In the next couple of weeks we also hope to finalise negotiations to take one further home game each season for the next five years to New Zealand. These are the only matches we intend to take away from our home at Penrith in the next three years.”

While the NRL has made no secret of its support for a big stadium strategy that could ultimately see the end of suburban grounds, Gould said there had been no discussion about moving games away from Penrith Stadium.

“Let me stress that never at any time has anyone from the NSW Government or the NRL suggested to the Panthers that we should move all our home games into one of the newly renovated stadiums,” he said.

“The Panthers will always call Penrith home.”

No location was given, but it is understood Penrith remains the clear favourite. It could be a decade away, however, with work on Parramatta, ANZ and Allianz Stadiums to come first.

The Panthers are likely to campaign heavily for the stadium to be built at Penrith in the years to come.

The State Government is unlikely to commit to a location until it can be proven that enough content, or games, exists to warrant the expensive work.

The Weekender can reveal that at one stage, the current site of the Penrith Paceway was the preferred option for a new stadium and sporting precinct. However, the Paceway is very reluctant to move.

“Our commitment is that construction on Parramatta Stadium, Sydney Football Stadium, Stadium Australia and the new indoor arena near the CBD will all be completed within 10 years,” said NSW Sports Minister and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres.

“The plan for the outer western Sydney stadium is about future proofing the region’s sport and entertainment demands.”

Meanwhile, with the recent sale of its Newcastle club, the Panthers Group is now in its best financial position in decades and well placed to meet or exceed its goals in the coming years.

Panthers also recently added local businessman Ian Hicks, from Hix Group, to its Board.

he western precinct of Fernhill Estate is one step closer to the possibility of being subdivided into several two hectare lots.

After reviewing an application to rezone the 111 hectares in Mulgoa, Penrith City Council endorsed a planning proposal to reduce the subdivision control for lot sizes from 10 hectare lots to two.

In supporting the proposal, Councillor John Thain said he expects there to be many changes made as it progresses through each stage of planning.

“It’s not a rezoning, it’s just a planning proposal,” he said.

“I expect when it goes to the Department of Planning for the Gateway Determination, they will have a look over it as well, at what can and can’t be done.”

The site is currently zoned under Penrith’s 2010 Local Environment Plan (LEP) as E3, that sets the minimum size for residential lots at 10 hectares, permitting a maximum of 11 lots on the site.

The amendment to this LEP seeks to allow 15 rural-residential lots as small as two hectares, as well as an approximately 70 hectare Biodiversity Banking lot.

fter months of preparation for a gruelling eight day Kokoda Trail trek, six local Year 11 girls and their mentors are leaving for Papua New Guinea tomorrow.

The 10 day adventure, organised by Panthers on the Prowl, aims to challenge the girls mentally and physically, and inspire them to continue to challenge themselves afterwards.

Panthers on the Prowl General Manager, Brad Waugh, said the 115km trek presents some extremely rough terrain.

“It tends to be either vertically up, or vertically down for most of the way. There will be a lot of creek crossings and heavy rainfall, and we will be battling with a fair bit of mud,” he said.

The six girls, Jessica Tibbett from Cranebrook High, Cassie Fitzpatrick from Jamison High, Analiese Langer from Glenmore Park High, Sheridan Page from Cambridge Park High, Nicole O’Haire from Kingswood High and Aimee Carlin from Nepean High are understandably nervous for what they are about to face.

The girls will be mentored on the trip by representatives and sponsors from the local community.

The 111 hectare lot to the west of Fernhill Estate that could be divided into one 70 hectare lot, and 15 smaller lots precedent for future subdivision.

“You are polluting the environment for all the extra profits. You look at the 10 hectare blocks and there is little percentage cleared, and the two hectare blocks are totally clear,” he said.

The planning proposal will be submitted to the NSW Government’s Department of Planning and Environment’s Gateway Process.

In particular, our 2015 State Election campaign advocacy program yielded fantastic results, including: • A commitment of $12 million towards the construction of the Western Sydney Sports and Community Centre at Panthers.

• A commitment of more than $1 billion for a Western Sydney Rail Upgrade Program to improve the current network and provide additional and faster services for the T1 Western Line including Penrith and Parramatta.

• Commitment of an additional 300

commuter car parking spaces at North Penrith.

• A commitment of $5 million to plan the widening of Mulgoa Road, from Andrews Road to Glenmore Parkway in conjunction with funding for upgrading the High Street, Jane Street and Mulgoa Road intersection.

• In addition to these great things, our city is looking forward to the benefits of the Western Sydney Airport and the development of the Sydney Science Park at Luddenham in future years.

In February we launched Penrith Progression – A Plan for Action. The culmination of extensive and intensive community consultation, it outlines 100 actions which captures a collective vision for the Penrith of the future.

It’s been gratifying to watch Penrith further cement its place as an important regional city and emerge as the capital of the New West and the Adventure Capital of Sydney. Council and our communities are uniting to carve out our unique place in western Sydney.

The McGrath Foundation set community cricket teams a challenge to help smash our fundraising goal and we haven’t been disappointed. Each group got their local community involved, turning their pitches pink and raised a collective $22,179. Not only that, over 1,000 teams around the country brought some magic to their cricket club going above and beyond to really make a difference. Through support like this, we are able to ensure families experiencing breast cancer have access to a breast care nurse, no matter where they live or their financial situation. To date, our extensive network of McGrath Breast Care Nurses have helped support over 36,000 families in Australia through their breast cancer experience, providing invaluable physical, psychological and

enrith City Council has committed to ensuring western Sydney’s economy keeps driving forward into the future.

Based on detailed research, workshop feedback and a business sentiment survey, Council has decided to focus on creating a comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (EDS) for the growing city.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler met with Council’s Economic Initiatives Manager, Kylie Powell at the Werrington Corporate Centre last week, and said the EDS will ensure the future Penrith will be the best it can be.

“We’re bringing fresh thinking to the economic planning process by combining research with first-hand experiences of the many successful business operators in the Penrith region,” he said.

“With contemporary thinking informed by detailed research, the project will identify strategies to deliver a sustainable economic future.”

One of the initial steps in the EDS was a workshop held in late July that assessed the city’s economic strengths and opportunities.

The workshop provided suggestions and ideas for the future, as well as identifying priority issues and key strategies to address them.

Following the workshop, Council conducted a Business Sentiment Survey across the region to ask about employment, business conditions and their experience of running a business.

The results of this Business Sentiment Survey are expected to add significant weight to Council’s EDS and help drive job growth in the region.

Ms Powell said the economic potential in Penrith was enormous.

“It is important the opportunities are maximised,” she said.

“We are at the heart of the north west and south west growth centres, we’re close to the airport and a logical hub for innovative industries of the future.”

t wasn’t just a question for the Penrith Ambulance team on national ‘R U OK?’ Day when they took the time out to gather around with staff from Nepean Hospital and have a barbecue.

Paramedics as well as nurses, doctors, and other hospital workers came together last Thursday, September 10, on ‘R U OK?’ Day, a day about protecting each other from suicide and reminding people to seek help when they need it.

A barbecue was held outside the Emergency Department where hospital workers and paramedics took time out.

Acting Duty Operations Manager at Penrith Ambulance Station, Michael Magyary, said it was important for staff and employees to take some muchneeded time out, especially on a day like ‘R U OK?’ Day. “It benefits the staff and employees because they then know that somebody cares for them and that there will always be someone there,” he said.

“It’s a great concept because it’s quite easy to forget or ignore the people who deal with trauma and stresses which can affect anyone.”

The free event for children is part of Lendlease’s month-long communitybased activities program to encourage social connection between Jordan Springs residents and promote positive mental wellbeing.

ndividuals and organisations can create community gardens with ease, now that Penrith Council has adopted clear guidelines for their development.

A Council report identified a further 16 potential community garden locations across the city and outlined the roles of those applying for and maintaining them.

Council’s Sustainability Coordinator, Carmel Hamilton, said these guidelines will encourage those wanting to create a community garden on Council owned land to do so, by making the process easier and clearer.

“Community gardens develop friendships, and both gardening and nongardening related skills,” she said.

“They have a role to play in reducing Penrith’s ecological footprint, and boost education and engagement around food and food gardening across the city.”

These guidelines suggest a bottom-up approach, where gardening groups manage the gardens themselves, need to be financially sustainable, and outlines Council’s very limited role and resource contribution.

lmost 50 one and two bedroom units will be built in the St Marys CBD as part of the Penrith Affordable Housing Project.

Penrith Council endorsed a Deed of Agreement with the NSW Family and Community Services (FACS), to deliver the project that will see 49 long term affordable rental and social housing units constructed on Phillip Street.

Penrith Councillor and Member for Londonderry, Prue Car said housing affordability is a crisis in the Penrith

region, and this project is just a start on what Council can do.

“It’s really good to see us talk about this and see something is happening, not just for the people that need affordable housing, but the people that need social housing,” she said.

Council’s $1.13 million of funding was initially for just one stage of the project to deliver four social housing units, and 20 affordable housing units. But its contribution was matched by FACS, alongside further funding from Wentworth Community Housing (WCH) who won the tender, and the Federal Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme.

Mamre Farm’s community garden has been a huge success with very little input from Council in the past groups, and Mamre Farm. Mamre Farm’s Property and Garden Service Manager, Malcolm Board said Mamre Farm has been traditionally looked after by Sisters of Mercy, and has remained successful with very little input from Council in the past.

Mr Board added that in community gardens, people benefit by seeing the whole process of where their food comes from.

t Marys South Public School student Edward Cruz took home the Stage 3 win at the Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Finals last week.

Werrington County Public School hosted the event, where 94 students from 24 western Sydney schools battled it out in Stage 2 and 3 competitions.

Winners and runners-up from each stage will proceed to the State Final on Wednesday, November 11, including Stage 3 runner-up Ranita Chand from Lethbridge Park Public School.

Colyton Public School student Nyilawoan Oatsomm was runner-up in the Stage 2 competition, and Anneesh Chakravarthula from Mt Druitt Public School came out on top.

Ben Garrard, from the NSW Government’s Arts Unit, said there are many educational benefits for the 3,625 students participating statewide, like familiarising students with words they might not otherwise come across.

“It’s working on their vocabulary, literacy, spelling, and is a good lead into public speaking when students get comfortable coming up to the microphone,” he said.

“Cherisa Zang in Year 3 did the best, making the top 10 in Stage 2. A great achievement,” he said.

Nine-year-old Miss Zang was up against Year 4 students and said after spelling six words correctly, she got stuck on one, very understandable word.

“I remember I had to spell ‘valet’ and I got that one wrong,” she said.

Regardless, Miss Zang said she had fun, and will try again in future spelling bees.

ne exceptional nurse from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) has been recognised for her 17 years of dedicated work with drugs and alcohol services.

Judith Fraser was the winner of the Excellence in Nursing – Registered Nurse Award presented by NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner for her work with patients where substance use has impacted their health and lives.

Ms Fraser was one of 11 winners from 239 nominees at the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

“I’m actually very proud of the District and the Drug and Alcohol Service, they have the foresight to understand the importance of drug and alcohol medicine,” she said.

Ms Fraser was nominated for her infallible work with such a vulnerable and stigmatised group of society.

“Drug and Alcohol Medicine is incredibly exciting and challenging, no two days are the same,” she said.

Dr Karen Fisher, Clinical Director of the NBMLHD Drug and Alcohol Service, said Ms Fraser advocates, explains and navigates a very complex world allowing patients to get the very best holistic care available.

enrith CBD has been a more vibrant place over the last two years, thanks to the activities, events, and marketing approaches from the Penrith CBD Corporation.

Penrith CBD Corporation’s (PCBDC) CEO, Gai Hawthorn, said they learnt a great deal from the first two years of the triennial plan, and hope to deliver the same success in the third year.

When it started, the Penrith CBD Corporation had no members but three years later, it now boasts 462 businesses.

With that success, the third year will deliver minor adjustments to the previ-

ous plans, but will still aim to attract crowds and boost business in the city.

This year’s plan will trial a summer evening cafe project with businesses to stimulate the night time economy, and aims to get 10 more businesses to upgrade their facades and fit outs.

And the PCBDC’s flagship event, the Penrith Festival will continue, in conjunction with seasonal activities in Memory Park and Pop-up Park.

“I’m even trying to rent a pop-up shop for the Christmas period,” Ms Hawthorn said.

The next event will be in the Pop-up Park on Friday, September 25, with free activities for children during the school holidays.

randparents Day at Wollemi College, Werrington, last week was more than just a chance to show grandparents the classrooms.

It was about showcasing and celebrating the diverse culture of students, and the heritage of their families, many who defied the odds to be where they are.

Wollemi’s Headmaster, Matt Aldous said the annual day is to ensure grandparents feel appreciated for the contribution they make to not only the school community but to society as a whole.

“Wisdom comes from experience, and the boys have been expressing that in recent speeches. It’s really important for them to realise the great experience and wisdom of their grandparents,” he said.

“We’ve got quite a large migrant background here, and one of the boys told

us he wanted to do well because of the sacrifices his grandparents made so his family could be here in Australia.

“There’s so many sacrifices that grandparents have made that we reap the benefits of.”

Through traditional Aboriginal, Filipino, Tongan, Spanish and Maori performances, the school celebrated the many cultures of students who said thank you to their grandparents.

Polynesian grandmother of 10, Emma Taufa, said she has been coming to Grandparents Day from the St George area for five years, and is proud to see an array of cultures celebrated at the school.

“It’s good, I like that I get to see my culture celebrated by my grandchildren, and it’s good for my grandchildren to see a bit of our heritage,” she said.

Mrs Taufa was born in Tonga, and has Tongan, Fijian, German and Samoan heritage, and moved to Australia in 1988.

CORNER WSU scholarship fund Assistance for refugees

Western Sydney University has announced a half-million dollar scholarship fund to assist refugees, with plans to raise a total of $12 million through a fundraising campaign.

The University’s Board of Trustees has endorsed the initiative with $500,000 set aside to create scholarships for refugees in Australia on humanitarian visas.

Cemetery trees to go

Too dangerous, says Mayor

Penrith Council will remove 16 White Cedar trees from Emu Plains Cemetery after they were inspected and deemed to pose a risk to visitors.

The cemetery, which has historic significance, has reached its capacity and is no longer available for new burials.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the trees are likely to become increasingly hazardous if left unattended.

“The health of the trees has suffered to a point that they pose a significant risk to visitors,” he said.

The trees will be replaced.

Pet ownership brochure New guide for local residents

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres this week announced Penrith City Council will receive a grant from the NSW Government to promote responsible pet ownership in the local community.

Mr Ayres said Penrith Council will spend more than $800 on providing an information brochure to educate pet owners on the essential strategies to help escape proof their properties.

“I congratulate Penrith Council and the community partners involved on promoting responsible pet ownership,” he said.

Responsible Pet Ownership Grants were introduced in 2014.

Turning back Time

Tennis stands the test of time Nathan Taylor looks back at the popular sport of tennis, which has been played in the Penrith region for some 134 years and is still extremely popular today...

W

ith the weather starting to heat up in Penrith, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no better sport to play with friends during the summer months than a spot of tennis.

But did you know that the first tennis club in Penrith started 134 years ago?

The famous Nepean Times newspaper indicates that tennis started around 1881 with the Penrith Lawn Tennis Club created in 1893.

According to extensive research conducted by Nepean District Tennis Association Vice President Neil Renaud, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until 1914 when the first tennis association in the Penrith district was formed, however the intervention of World War I saw it fold just one year later.

Following the Great War, tennis underwent a major revival in Australia, particularly in country areas of NSW. Penrith was a town of around 3500 people in March 1921 when a meeting open to all tennis clubs in the area was held at

the Penrith School of Arts to once again form a tennis association and organise a local competition.

The person primarily responsible for promoting the idea was Mt Druitt resident Harry Innes.

Soon after, it was tentatively decided to form an association, which was confirmed on April 20, 1921 when the Nepean District Tennis Association (NDTA) was officially created at a meeting attended by representatives of nine local clubs.

Well known Penrith identity and former mayor Dr Frederick Higgins was elected president, a position he held right throughout the 1920s.

Mr A.L Stanton was the associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first secretary while Mr M Newman was the first treasurer.

The boundary of the NDTA covered the area from Glenbrook to Blacktown and extended three miles on either side of the western railway line.

A respectable 12 teams nominated for the very first NDTA competition, which started in May 1921.

Those teams included Castlereagh, Glenbrook, Kingswood Waratah, Mt Druitt,

Rooty Hill, St Marys, Emu Plains, Railway and St Stephenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Teams were divided into two groups of six with the two leading teams in each group to qualify for semi finals after a full home and away series of matches. The two semi final winners would then progress to the final. The final between the Kingswood Waratah club and Castlereagh was played on the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Railway courtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; near the old Railway Street Theatre Company. The Waratah club defeated Castlereagh in the final and, as a prize, won a new tennis net for their club.

At the completion of the inaugural competition, the NDTA Championships were soon held for doubles players only.

That competition took place in September 1921 with John Roseby and Bert Wall taking out the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doubles while Nita Colless and Gwen Jones won the ladies doubles. Jones later teamed up with Charles Clarke to win the mixed doubles.

These players will forever be remembered as the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first district champions.

The NDTA Championships completed what was a successful first year for the new association and to celebrate a concert

was held at Temperance Hall to present the competition and tournament trophies.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s understood the concert was only moderately attended with the only people agreeing to show their faces the ones being recognised.

President of the NDTA, Dr Higgins, presented the premiership pennant to the Kingswood Waratah Club and trophies, racquets and handbags to the various winners of the doubles tournament.

NDTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s officials werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t left out either with association secretary Mr Stanton presented with a fountain pen for his splendid services in organising the competition and tournament.

For more than a century, tennis has been played at multiple sites in and around the Penrith area with Judges Park in the CBD and Woodriff Gardens, off Mulgoa Road, the most notable.

In the early 1960s the Nepean Tennis Club, which was located in Judges Park, was itching for a new location. With Penrith Council purchasing the land around Judges Park for parking, the tennis courts were relocated to Woodriff Gardens, where they remain today.

am an unapologetic winter-hater!

I have the occasional happy thought towards the cold weather when I get to wear a favourite coat.

But that small pleasure is never enough to compensate for dreary, shorter days of wearing layers and battling the cold and flu season.

Today as I write this article, the sun is beaming and it is a glorious day.

Without even realising it at first, my mood first thing this morning was completely different, even though I had just as many things on my mind as the day before.

Even working indoors as I do, my outlook on the day was brighter and I felt more energised.

I know we are not all wired in the way I’ve described above (some of you strangely enjoy winter!).

But there is a great deal of research about the effects of weather and exposure to nature on mood and overall mental and physical health.

As small business owners, many of us are nose to the grindstone and tend to forget about stopping once in a while to recharge.

One study into the benefits of nature has found that the farther you live from green space, the more likely you are to be unhealthy.

Other studies have linked a lack of exposure to nature to higher risks for obesity, cancer, heart disease, anxiety and depression.

It also seems to be self-perpetuating: that is, the more deprived we are of the ‘outdoors’, the less likely we are to seek it (and to curl up on the couch instead!).

Conversely, those who spend even just 15 minutes walking in nature (rather than urban areas) seem to have dramatic increases in self-esteem, improved mood, and even boosts in creativity and memory retention.

Most of us really don’t have an excuse.

Instead of eating lunch in front of the computer, go outside to eat.

Leave home 15 minutes early and go for a walk before you start work.

It does not have to be anything strenuous – even sitting on a chair in a natural setting can have positive effects.

Your body and your business will thank you for it!

Integrity – leadership cannot succeed without trust and respect and these two can only be given when a leader shows great integrity and ethics.

M

ost comedians you s p e a k to have childhood memories of the first moment they realised they wanted to get into comedy. It might have been a particular comedian or a TV show that first ignited the spark, but either way they had a sense that making people laugh was the job they were born to do.

Stephen K Amos didn’t experience that spark.

“It never happened at all,” the British comedian said down the phone line from his home in London.

Stephen recalls that much of the comedy from his childhood centred around fat jokes and racist jokes, both of which he couldn’t identify with.

“I didn’t believe that was my arena, I didn’t think those kind of things were funny,” he said.

There was also a feeling that many comedians were simply using their comedy to make fun of others.

“What I saw at the time was that all these people on TV who are doing jokes, they themselves, or their culture, their look, was never ever the butt of the joke,” Stephen said.

“It was always somebody else who’s the victim.”

For this particular comedian the step into the world of comedy didn’t come until he was in the middle of a law degree, when a woman in a bar told him he was

funny and should try his hand at comedy.

“I thought to myself, you know what, give it a go, what is there to lose,” he said.

“And I did it, I loved it, and I haven’t stopped.”

Thank God he did, because since that time Stephen K Amos has become one of the most recognised names in comedy, performing for audiences across the globe and making regular appearances at comedy festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Stephen’s current tour, which will be heading to the Evan Theatre this October, is titled ‘Welcome to My World’ and doesn’t necessarily sound like the type of subject matter that lends itself to comedy.

“You read the newspapers or see an item on the news program and it’s all doom and gloom and negativity and conflict and I was just trying to think about the conflict in my world,” he said.

But this is exactly Stephen’s style. He enjoys bringing to light heavier issues, which he believes are best handled with a side of laughter.

“We all have conflict in our own lives on very different levels but it depends on how you deal with stuff,” he said.

“If you’re a kind of negative person, wallowing and angsty and ‘woe is me’ then to see a light out of that tunnel would be very difficult.

“If you can find a way to find the silver lining in that dark sky then that’s a good thing I think.”

The social issues that Stephen is particularly passionate about tackling on stage are racism and homophobia. He believes that while anything can be joked about, it needs to be done in a clever way.

To demonstrate his point Stephen mentions a situation that happened during a show when he asked a young

man in the audience if he had a girlfriend and the man sitting next to him said ‘oh he’s gay’ and started laughing to himself.

“I thought I need to address this because if you want me to join you in having a go at this young man who you say is gay but isn’t gay, and that is a joke, that’s not good enough because we’ve moved on, it’s not the playground anymore,” he said.

“I think we need to address those things.”

Though he is just as open to being challenged himself.

“Obviously that’s because I am a very big supporter of freedom of speech,” Stephen said.

“If you do accept that [freedom of speech] you also have to accept freedom of expression from the audience.

“So if I say a joke commenting on a situ-

ation that did happen and it hasn’t quite worked I totally expect the audience to react in a certain way or even heckle me or even challenge me, that is their right.”

This audience interaction has become a staple of Stephen’s shows “I want to be so in the moment and relaxed that if anything happens in the room I can deal with it,” he said.

“The audiences know that if something’s happened it’s happened there and then and they’ve seen something that I haven’t planned.

“That for me adds to the joy of a live moment.”

The choir is currently looking for participants for their next project ‘Summer Beat’, directed by Lucy McAlary.

Girls and boys aged 7 to 13 years are invited to show off their singing skills in this exciting new project that celebrates the fun of summer.

Picking Up The Pieces // KATE REID The last few albums from 90s music star Jewel have included a Christmas album, a greatest hits and a children’s album. So there’s no doubt that fans will be happy to hear that Jewel has just released a brand new album of original material titled ‘Picking Up The Pieces’.

While Jewel has dabbled in country on her previous releases, this album is closer to the folky sound that listeners originally fell in love with on her debut 1995 release ‘Pieces of You’.

‘Picking Up The Pieces’ opens with the heartfelt track ‘Love Used To Be’ and it’s clear that her divorce last year from husband Ty Murray has influenced many of the songs on the album.

One of the standout tracks is the beautiful ‘My Father’s Daughter’ which features country icon Dolly Parton.

This album is a solid comeback.

Beca, Chloe, Fat Amy and the rest of the Barden Bellas are back for another instalment of the aca-awesome ‘Pitch Perfect’; titled ‘Pitch Perfect 2’.

After failing to impress the President of the United States due to an accidental blunder by Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) during a performance, the Bellas are suspended from the acapella game.

A new recruit joins the Bellas, but not everything goes to plan as their attempt at a comeback goes from bad to worse.

The team have one more attempt at winning back the hearts of fans but it’s no

easy feat coming into the 2015 Acapella World Championships, a competition an American team has never won before.

Chloe (Brittany Snow) calls for 100 per cent commitment from the team but as seniors, thought of life after college is slowly leaving one Bella behind as she tries her luck in the real music world.

A new romance begins which sees Fat Amy have her very own solo, not without its humorous moments.

Witty one-liners come from acapella commentators Gail (Elizabeth Banks) and John (John Michael Higgins) to keep

you laughing, with Australian Rebel Wilson playing her part as the comedic backbone of the film.

The team attempt to find their sound again as they head out on the road to redemption.

A film with an ending that hits its high note, ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ is much like its predecessor in several ways but with fresh faces, new music, a new competitor in the mix and new and old relationships blossoming. It’s an entertaining movie.

Penrith celebrates in style Penrith’s Bicentenary Festival was held last Saturday to commemorate this important milestone for our community.

The festival was held at Thornton Oval and there was plenty of entertainment for young and old.

There were performances by Megan Longhurst from ‘The Voice’ 2014, Jayden and Jack Sierra formerly of The Collective and award-winning hip hop dance group The Pioneers.

Guests enjoyed the sunshine along with plenty of fun activities including bubble soccer, face painting, sporting activities, an animal farm and amusement rides.

The Bicentenary Festival was the perfect opportunity for the community to join together to celebrate 200 years of life in Penrith.

Fish and chips with tartare sauce

Ingredients for fish • 12 flathead fillets, scaled with skin still on • 2 cups of plain flour • 1 cup of potato starch • 1/2 cup of pale ale • 2 cups of soda water • 1/2 cup of ice • 4ltrs grapeseed oil for frying

1. First dust the fillet with the plain flour, make sure to season the flour.

2. Combine remaining flour and potato starch in a large metal bowl. Add beer, then add soda water until you get a thick ‘custard’ like consistency. Add ice, this helps keep the mixture cold to make it super crispy.

3. Fry the fish in batches in 175c oil, use a deep fryer or a really large saucepan, they should only take around two minutes each to be golden and crispy, leave on absorbent paper, do the fish before the chips as these chips only take seconds!

Ingredients for chips • 2kgs of taro 1. Peel the taro and using a mandolin slice into a thin julienne.

2. Fry for 30 seconds in 180c oil, season while hot.

These are so much easier to get really crispy at home compared to potato chips.

Ingredients for tartare sauce • 2 cups of mayo (make your own or use ‘whole egg’) • 1/2 cup of cornichons – finely diced • 1/2 cup of caper – finely diced • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 tbsp of lemon zest • ¼ cup of Italian parsley – chopped finely

Spring is the perfect time to renovate your home esearch released by St George Bank reveals six in every 10 Aussie households plan on updating their home in the next 12 months, with a third stating they already have the savings set aside to do so.

Spring was voted the most popular time of year to get these renovations underway, and with more than half (55 per cent) of Aussies admitting

they will outsource, the season ahead is tipped to be a busy one for tradies across the nation.

Updating living areas is the number one priority for households, directly followed by the bathroom, kitchen and outdoor areas.

When it comes to cost, the budget most Australians plan on spending on renos over the next 12 months is between $5,000 to $10,000, with

a third (33 per cent) stating they already have the money set aside.

Only nine per cent of respondents said they still required finance to undertake renovations with remaining households saying they need to save a little more in order to get their renovations underway.

When asked what households were giving up in order to fund the renovations, eating out and family entertainment was ranked the first thing to sacrifice according to 45 per cent of Australians, followed by a holiday which would be given up by households to save even more (43 per cent), and then forgoing upgrading the family car if more money was needed (39 per cent).

Australians’ attitude of rolling up their sleeves remains strong, with nearly half of all home owners (44 per cent) planning to tackle the renovation job DIY-style and calling in the help of family and friends.

However the majority (53 per cent) will call in tradespeople for the more difficult tasks.

Five per cent of households admitted they would put the pressure entirely on the man of the house to get the work done.

Neelam Tandon, Head of Retail Banking at St George says the uptick we will see this spring looks to be driven largely by home owners wanting to modernise their home to create more space and make it more liveable.

“But we’re also seeing one in four home owners (25 per cent)

using this time to prepare their home for sale, aiming to increase its value so they can relocate, and this increases even more in the 25 to 34 age bracket with more than a third (36 per cent) stating they need to renovate to relocate to a bigger home,” she said.

“Being a nation of savers, it’s great to see that most Australians already have the money set aside for their renos, or a savings plan in place and don’t need to rely on personal debt.

“Cutting back on living expenses and eating out is a wise choice for households who want to make changes to their home, and we always recommend putting this money aside in a completely separate account and watch it grow while you plan out your renovation budget in full, factoring in all costs.”

To help you get your renovation started, St George has suggested the following top tips: Renovation top tips • Assess your home to determine what will add the most value or increase the comfort of your living space • Plan and research your renovation in detail so you know exactly what it will involve and how long it will take • Set a budget to see how much you can spend to ensure you don’t over-commit and can save for the items you really want • Put aside extra money in a contingency fund for any unexpected expenses.

Almond Milk: Almond milk can be a healthy option as long as you know what to look out for. Almond milk is lower in energy content than other milks, contains no saturated fat and is suitable for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant. The downside is that almond milk is also lower in protein and calcium, and can be higher in sugar. Be sure to choose brands that are unsweetened and fortified with calcium.

After being officially sworn in on Tuesday, the new Prime Minister’s attitude to much publicised areas of law is already being hotly debated.

Mr Turnbull is known for his views on two controversial issues, the first being his desire for an Emissions Trading Scheme in relation to the climate change debate, and the second being his support of the legalisation of gay marriage.

Turnbull garnered votes from other members of the Liberal Party by promising to put his climate change agenda on the back burner and support previous Prime Minister Abbott’s view that a plebiscite should be held to determine if gay marriage is legalised in Australia.

A plebiscite is a vote of all the members of the Australian electorate on a question of public importance, however

typically such a vote is not automatically made law until the government decides if it should be legislated.

If this approach is adopted, all eligible members of the Australian population will need to attend a polling booth and vote for or against the issue just as they would in an election.

It remains to be seen what the Turnbull Government will do in relation to the question of legalisation of gay marriage.

Further, the infamous “carbon tax” under the previous Labor Government means that any change to our climate change policy could spell political doom for the new Prime Minister.

Whether you support gay marriage or not, or are happy with our current climate change stance, what is more interesting is how the face of Australian politics can change in a blink of an eye and how our laws can be influenced by the desire of our political parties to retain power as opposed to the national interest.

Love him or hate him, our new Prime Minister means the potential for interesting changes to our law in relation to hotly debated social issues.

Ear infections are mainly due to an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast.

Sometimes there are complicating factors such as ear mites, excessive hair or even a growth or something foreign inside the ear canal.

What are the signs of an ear infection in my dog?

The researchers saw visible cellular changes in the group of 10 men who switched to a healthy diet and stuck to a recommended timetable of exercise and stress-busting meditation and yoga.

The changes related to protective caps at the end of our chromosomes, called telomeres. Their role is to safeguard the end of the chromosome and to prevent the loss of genetic information during cell division.

Often a swab is also taken of any ear discharge and examined under the microscope. Through this we are able to tell whether bacteria or yeast or even mites are responsible for the infection.

Dogs with chronic ear problems may also need diagnosis and treatment for underlying allergies.

How are ear infections treated?

We almost always use antibiotic or antifungal ear drops in dogs. Unfortunately, oral medications do not penetrate the ear well enough to treat ear infections.

Depending on the severity of the infection, sometimes oral anti-inflammatories are needed for pain relief and to reduce the swelling of the ear canals.

Ears also need to be cleaned, depending on the severity, we may prescribe an ear cleaner to be used.

In extreme circumstances a thorough ear flush under an anaesthetic may be recommended.

Not all ear infections can be prevented but a few simple steps can help reduce the incidence and severity of an ear infection such as checking your dogs ears weekly for any abnormal discharge, redness or odour.

As we age and our cells divide, our telomeres get shorter – their structural integrity weakens, which can tell cells to stop dividing and die.

The latest work by Prof Dean Ornish and colleagues suggests telomeres can be lengthened, given the right encouragement.

They measured telomere length at the beginning of their study and again after five years.

Among the 10 men with low-risk prostate cancer who made comprehensive lifestyle changes, telomere length increased significantly by an average of 10 per cent. In comparison, telomere length decreased by an average of three per cent in the remaining 25 men who were not asked to make any lifestyle changes.

Shorter telomeres have been linked with a broad range of age-related diseases, including heart disease, and a variety of cancers.

Our genes and our telomeres are a predisposition, but they are not necessarily our fate.

But past work has shown that people who lead a sedentary lifestyle can experience accelerated cellular ageing in the form of more rapid shortening of their telomeres.

oyota’s Corolla has established a break of more than 2400 sales in the battle for line honours as Australia’s best-selling car.

Corolla topped the auto industry sales chart for the sixth time this year in August with Toyota dealers delivering 3050 of the model’s hatches and sedans.

The popular small car was supported by a strong Camry performance with 2095 sedans sold, an increase of 24.3 per cent over the same month last year and a segment share of 54.6 per cent.

Camry sales have risen by more than 950 vehicles in the past three months since the arrival of an extensive upgrade to the range that brought bold new styling, a locally developed sports version and even better value.

Toyota’s August sales of 14,505 vehicles also benefited from segment-leading contributions from Yaris, Kluger, LandCruiser wagon, HiAce van and HiAce bus.

The August results lifted the company’s 2015 sales tally to 133,059 vehicles.

Toyota Executive Director, Sales and Marketing Tony Cramb said the upcoming new models would further strengthen the company’s position as the market leader.

“Toyota sales will benefit from the new high-torque diesel engine launched earlier this month for Prado, along with an improved V6 petrol engine and other updates,” he said.

enrith Panthers U20’s coach Cameron Ciraldo has praised his young team and coaching staff after he was named Holden Cup Coach of the Year.

Despite being in his rookie year as head coach, the 30-year-old former Newcastle and Penrith backrower guided his young troops to the top of the Holden Cup competition this season.

Ciraldo was recognised for his efforts during a presentation at Rugby League Central on Monday morning.

“It’s a big honour getting an award like that but it wasn’t something I set out to achieve, I’m just very lucky we’ve got a good squad here,” Ciraldo said.

“The boys in the team have worked very hard and I wouldn’t be getting any awards if it weren’t for them and my staff.”

Also named in the Holden Cup Team of the Year was Panthers captain Brent Naden, who’s enjoyed a stellar season in Penrith’s potent backline.

Ciraldo said the Indigenous kid from western NSW had come a long way since joining the club three years ago.

“I’ve known Brent since he was at SG Ball, and to see his development over those last three years has made me really proud,” he said.

“Last year was a big learning curve for him on and off the field. He was doing a few things he probably shouldn’t have been doing in regards to preparation, but this year he’s been outstanding and really led from the front in training.”

After defeating Manly 44-24 in last Saturday’s qualifying final at ANZ Stadium, the Panthers will now enjoy the weekend off and await the winner out of the Broncos and Warriors game this Saturday.

Unfortunately for Ciraldo he’ll be without halfback Nathan Cleary for the remainder of the finals after the youngster elected to fulfil his Australian Schoolboys dream. In July Cleary was selected in the halves for the Australian Schoolboys but poor scheduling meant the two match series against New Zealand, to be played in Brisbane, coincided with the last two weeks of the Holden Cup finals.

he Western Sydney Wanderers visited Wallacia Public School on Tuesday afternoon to crown them winners of the inaugural Wanderers School of the Year competition, celebrating with an expo and jersey launch event.

This year was the inaugural edition of the School of the Year competition, allowing schools from western Sydney to compete in set community and club-related challenges to earn points.

Wallacia Public School came out on top with over 50,000 points.

As part of their reward, the Wanderers put on a coaching clinic, held their jersey launch event at the school and also put on a Wanderers expo.

“Wallacia Public School is a small school with 66 children currently enrolled,” School Principal, Mark Davies said.

“They love their soccer and have some crazy Wanderers-loving parents, which I think contributed to the win as well.”

The new jerseys are very similar to previous years except this season includes a gold star above the logo to reflect last year’s AFC Champions League win.

he Penrith Panthers have released a new-look logo to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary season in 2016.

The new logo is set to appear in some form on Penrith’s 2016 jerseys and merchandise range.

Penrith Panthers Executive General Manager of Rugby League, Phil Gould said the club takes great pride in its history.

“Our 50th season is a significant milestone and one we will celebrate with all those who have been a part of our club during this time,” he said.

“The release of our anniversary logo will be the first in a number of events commemorating half a century of our Panther Pride.”

The club stressed that the new logo would not become its official logo next season but has instead been used creatively in the design of next season’s jerseys and merchandise.

The 2016 Panthers jerseys and merchandise range will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Since entering the NSWRL first grade competition back in 1967, Penrith have

After making his first grade debut last season, Smith played nine NRL games for the Panthers in 2015.

“We are extremely excited to have Will extend his contract with the Panthers for the next 12 months,” Gould said.

“This season was a breakthrough year for Will and I suspect next year will be even better.”

Meanwhile, 22-year-old prop Leilani Latu has signed a new two-year deal that will see him stay with Penrith until the end of the 2017 season.

He made his NRL debut this year.

WSU students and Trivia Night organisers Alexa Christodoulou, Paige Hadley, Jacob Boutoubia and Dejan Trickovski Next month local Netball World Cup champion Paige Hadley, along with fellow students from Western Sydney University (WSU), will be hosting a Trivia Night to raise money and awareness for the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS).

‘Trivia with the Stars’, to be held at Penrith RSL on October 9, will consist of four rounds of brain teasing questions as well as raffles, games, prizes and auctions.

The students chose Penrith as the location for the event as all proceeds will go towards the WSAS, a not-for-profit sporting organisation based at Pepper Stadium.

“We are proud of the effort and organisation that has gone into this event, and are overwhelmed by the support we have received from local businesses and individuals through contributions including sponsorship and donations,” Hadley said.

‘Trivia with the Stars’ will be held at Penrith RSL on Friday, October 9 at 7pm.

he club that produced current NRL stars Matt Moylan, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Blake Austin were the big winners at the 2015 Penrith Juniors Presentation Night, held at the Evan Theatre, last week.

The St Clair Comets Junior Rugby League Club, which is home to more than 700 players, took out three awards on the night including the prestigious Overall Club Championship.

It was the first time since the 1998 season that St Clair had won the night’s biggest prize, with cross-town rivals St Marys winning it for the last few years.

by Brothers on 481 points and St Marys on 472 points.

“Overall Club Championship 2015, doesn’t it sound good?” St Clair Comets Treasurer, Rod Fallon said.

“It’s been a long time between drinks, in fact last century, 17 years ago that we received the Overall Club Championship and for that, I’d like to say thank you to the Penrith District Junior Rugby League for putting on such a great competition.”

St Marys won the First Division Club Championship and were also awarded a number of individual accolades with Rocky Togatuki winning U16 Player of the Year, Samuel Radovu named U17

Player of the Year, Urima Toomalatai winning A Reserve Grade Player of the Year and Brad Anderson presented the Barry Nicol Memorial Award for Sports Trainer of the Year.

Other notable winners on the night included the Glenmore Park Brumbies who won the McDonald’s Garton Group Relay Championship; Lower Mountains who took home the Club Management Award; while Marty Romer from Emu Plains was named Coach of the Year.

AFL: The Penrith Ramettes have finished runners up in the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 2 competition, going down to the Gosford Wildcats 27-24 in last Saturday’s Grand Final.

The match, played in Blacktown, was a tight tussle throughout with the Ramettes going into the half-time break in front 16-9.

However, an excellent third quarter by the Wildcats saw them push ahead of the Ramettes to take a four point lead into the final term.

Despite the Ramettes making it somewhat interesting in the dying minutes, it was the girls from Gosford who prevailed as premiers by just three points.

included Nikki Perrett, Justine Vella and Renee Tomkins. Captain Natalie Camilleri also played a strong game.

AFL: The Penrith Rams are seeking expressions of interest for all coaching positions at the club for the 2016 season.

The Rams had a very successful 2015 with all five teams making the finals.

The club is looking for experienced coaches for the Seniors (Division 2), Reserves (Division 3), Thirds (Division 5), U19’s and Women’s team.

BASEBALL: The 2015/16 State Baseball League season got underway last weekend with reigning premiers Penrith taking on Manly in Round 1.

In a hard fought battle, Penrith defeated Manly 9-7 in the opening game and will now meet the Vikings this Sunday.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Penrith’s premiership defence in the NSW Cup is over following a 44-12 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle last Sunday.

The Knights defeated the Panthers in an Elimination Semi Final at Kogarah Oval to set up a meeting with Mounties for a place in the Grand Final.

he Penrith Emus have called upon former Wallabies hooker Jeremy Paul to turn their fortunes around after the 2005 John Eales Medallist signed on to help coach the side next season.

The 38-year-old New Zealand-born Australian, who has played 72 games for the Wallabies, will team up with current Shute Shield coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu in 2016 to hopefully transform the struggling club into a future powerhouse.

“Jeremy Paul will be a valued addition to our current coaching setup. We are very pleased to have someone with his expertise and pedigree on board,” Penrith Emus President, Jim Hook said.

Along with Paul’s extensive international career, he was also a pivotal member of the ACT Brumbies Super Rugby side, appearing in 112 games.

With the hardworking Tu’ipulotu remaining on board, Hook said it was very common these days to have two coaches at the helm.

“Teki and Jeremy are friends and Teki played a big part in getting him to come to Penrith,” he revealed.

The Penrith Emus have been the battlers of rugby in Sydney for some time and this year

hit rock bottom, failing to win a single game in the Shute Shield competition.

Having turned Central Coast club the Terrigal Trojans around in recent years, Hook said Paul was the right man to achieve the same goal at Penrith.

“Jeremy’s under no illusions what the challenges are and that makes things better for us. He’s interested in a building process as are we,” he said.

“He’s been very successful in turning Terrigal around of late. They were a successful club, had a downturn and then he went there and won the last two Club Championships.

“I’m sure Jeremy and Teki can make it work very well next year. In fact we’re all very excited about the buzz around the place at the moment.”

Paul will arrive at the club in October.

Meanwhile, the club have announced halfback Mike Bayssat as the 2015 Penrith Emus Player of the Year.

Bayssat won the prestigious honour during the club’s Presentation Night, held at Nepean Rugby Park, last Saturday.

“Mike’s a bit of a journeyman being from France but he’s a tough little man and plays very well. He works hard and is a credit to himself,” Hook said.
