enrith Council has elected its first female Mayor in 10 years. Labor Councillor Karen McKeown defeated Liberalaligned Marcus Cornish 11 votes to four at Council’s Mayoral Election on Monday night. Cr McKeown was tipped to secure the job 12 months ago, when the Weekender revealed a secret deal to install Kevin Crameri as Mayor for 2015-16 was left in tatters. Cr McKeown replaces outgoing Mayor Ross Fowler, who nominated himself for Deputy Mayor, defeating fellow nominee Jackie Greenow nine votes to six. This is the first time Cr McKeown will wear the Mayoral robes since being elected to Council in 2004, and she said she is both ecstatic and humbled to take on the top job.

“I’m only the fifth woman to be elected Mayor of Penrith. As some of you may have guessed, gender equality is a passion of mine,” she said. Cr McKeown said she would build on the good work already underway at Council, and develop more programs to celebrate the Nepean River and better connect with the community. “Programs such as the Mayoral Challenge, the Penrith Blue Mountains Hawkesbury Alliance, the community panel and the Property Advisory Panel but to name a few,” she said. “The true power of Penrith lies in its people, its ideas, its innovation, its collaboration, and commitment.” Cr McKeown will lead Penrith until the next local government election, which is due to be held in September next year. She is the first female Mayor since Jackie Greenow in 2004-05. Story continues on » p. 3

Secret deals out, democracy in: Locals want to vote for city’s leader DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

here is no doubt that Karen McKeown’s elevation to Mayor is well deserved and comes after more than a decade of service to the local community on Council. But the fact that the Weekender told its readers a year ago that Cr McKeown would be Mayor potentially exposes a flaw in the current system. While local residents vote for the people who represent them on Council every four years, the Mayor is decided by an internal vote of the 15 councillors. For some time, behind the scenes deals and delicate negotiations have essentially decided who will be Penrith’s Mayor – often four years in advance. Deals are generally arranged to have a Mayor sit for just one year. Gone are the days of people like Brian King, who served a full term as Penrith Mayor from 1971 to 1974 and then returned to the Mayoral chair in 1977 for another eight years. If the Mayor was to be elected by the voters, it would guarantee a four year term and potentially offer more stability. Has the time come for voters to decide? Email news@westernweekender.com.au.

T

Who should be responsible for deciding who is Mayor? Tabetha, Cambridge Gardens “The Mayor of Penrith would be making decisions for the community and it has an impact on the community. I think a Mayor should be in for a four year term and not just a one year term, one year is a bit short.” Connor, North Penrith “A Mayor should last four or five years in power anyway. A year isn’t much time to satisfy their grievances as opposed to four or five years. Like a Prime Minister. It is definitely time to let the community decide who should be Mayor.”

Samantha, Werrington “I think it should be us that’s voting, because it’s us that need to know as well, Councillors shouldn’t be deciding on their own. I think we should vote every one or two years, it is also our choice on who we want as Mayor and not just theirs to make.” Ian, Cranebrook “Yeah I guess the community should vote for Mayor. I don’t really follow it all that much but I do know I think it should be up to us to vote. We should be able to have our say and decide.”

Story continued from » p. 1 The Liberal-aligned Cr Fowler said he looked forward to working alongside the new Mayor despite their political differences. “There will be a continuation of the vision that Council has set for itself three years ago, continuing the emphasis on improving the employment and work opportunities for those who live in the area,” he said. “I look forward to achieving the utmost we can achieve for Penrith, its residents and ratepayers.” Fellow Councillors commended Cr Fowler on tackling critical issues for Council over his two year stint as Mayor. “One of the things you’ve really had your hands on is the strategic alliance with Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains Councils,” Cr Mark Davies said to Cr Fowler. Labor’s John Thain said Council has been “very well served” with Cr Fowler as Mayor, and Labor’s Prue Car labelled him an “institution” in Penrith. Cr Cornish’s four votes came from himself, Kevin Crameri, Maurice Girotto and Jim Aitken, further cementing Cr Aitken’s rift with fellow Liberal-aligned Councillors that only appears to be getting worse. Cr Aitken would have been Mayor for 2014-15 had the behind-the-scenes deal not been torn up last year.

Losing an old friend drives home the message about depression On this road we call life, we meet many different people. Some will simply pass us by. Some will have a profound impact on our lives and be in it forever, while others will play a small role and then go their own way. I admit I don’t catch up with too many of my school friends these days. There’s no specific reason – we all simply went our own way and lived our own lives. Facebook tells the story of marriages, children, divorces, overseas trips and career achievements, but that’s pretty much the extent of our contact. Two weeks ago, I was putting the finishing touches on an edition of the Weekender when I received a phone call that really hit me for six. One of my childhood friends – who I went through both primary and high school with – had taken his own life. I’d seen Kieran from time to time over the years. He’d been a long-time employee at Panthers, and it was always good to say a casual hello and enjoy a quick catch-up. When he passed away two weeks ago, and at his funeral last Friday, memories came rushing back. We used to spend most Sundays together – half the day at his house, half the day at my place. We both had an obsession with hanging posters from TV Week and TV Hits on our walls, and I used to try and convince him every weekend that we needed to take every poster down and re-arrange the design. At one stage, in what was perhaps the first indication of the industry I’d end up working in, myself and another friend started a rival to the school newspaper. We called it The Weekly Times. It wasn’t long before Kieran and I started a rival to that, and then more rivals followed until we were all competing against each other with these bizarre little newspapers that we printed on our desktop printers at home.

“He had a profound impact on people’s lives”

The readership was poor and yes, in case you didn’t guess it, sport wasn’t quite our thing in high school. At his memorial service last Friday, I essentially got an update about Kieran’s last 15 or so years in the space of half an hour. What was clear was that he had touched many lives, developed many wonderful friendships and kicked plenty of goals. Along the road, it seems he also found some challenges that in the end, he struggled to overcome. It is an all-too-common story. Unless you’ve been there, nobody – me included – can begin to understand the very difficult and confronting reality of depression. Every time, however, that I look a little deeper into depression and suicide, I’m always startled by the statistics. In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for males and females aged between 15 and 44. In a typical year, about 2,500 people in Australia die by suicide. To put it into context, the death toll on Australian roads each year is about half that. Initiatives like R U OK? Day have brought this issue to the forefront of our minds, but it is clear that all of us need to understand it more, and be part of the solution. It is currently Suicide Prevention Month, while next month is Mental Health Month. November is the Melbourne Cup. What do you think we’ll be talking about more? The road we call life has many forks, twists and turns. Sometimes, for some of us, they’re simply too hard to navigate. I’ll never forget those times during school with Kieran and I can only hope that he has now found whatever it was he couldn’t find with all of us. Wednesday would have been his 32nd birthday. To his mother Lyn and sisters Leanne and Lauren, my deepest sympathies. If you need help, call 13 11 14.

Family shattered after death of “sensitive soul” who cared deeply for others JADE ALIPRANDI

Nigel Pauljevic was pronounced dead at Nepean Hospital after he was found unconscious in a tent at the Defqon.1 music festival on the weekend The cause of death is still being investigated at this stage but after 46 drug arrests at the festival, Detective Inspector Grant Healey from Penrith Police Station warned that you can’t be too certain about what’s in the pills you take. “Every time you take drugs, you’re putting your own life at risk,” Detective Inspector Healey said.

he family of Nigel Pauljevic say their lives have been “changed forever” following the death of the 26-year-old at last weekend’s Defqon.1 music festival in Penrith. It’s the second death at the popular festival in just three years, prompting major concerns from the community. It’s understood Mr Pauljevic, from Albury, was camping with a group of friends at the multi-day event at the Sydney International Regatta Centre when, just after 11.00pm on Saturday night, he was found unconscious in a tent. His friends rendered first aid until NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived on the scene. He was transported to Nepean Hospital, where he later died. In a statement released to the media on Monday, Mr Pauljevic’s family said they want to remember all the good things about him. “Right now, we’re just trying to process everything in our own way,” the statement said. “He was a sensitive soul, so caring and loving; always looking out for others and putting their needs before his own – we miss him so much.”

“The people that make the drugs don’t care about you or anyone else, except for making their own profits.” Officers from Penrith Police Station are investigating the circumstances around the incident at Defqon.1 and will prepare a report for the information of the NSW Coroner. Organisers of the music festival, Q-Dance Australia, are fully supporting the investigation. “At present, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” Q-Dance Australia said in a statement. “Everyone on our team is deeply shocked and affected by this tragic event. “We are working closely with the NSW Police and authorities and giving them our full support in their investigations.” A total of nine people were taken to Nepean Hospital from the event. In 2013, 23-year-old James Munro died of a suspected ecstasy overdose at the festival after he suffered a series of cardiac arrests. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to Mr Pauljevic’s death to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. “It’s hard to express in words how grateful we are for the love and support we’ve received from our friends and the community over the past few days,” the family of Mr Pauljevic said.

Police snapshot Penrith: Drug charges following music festival

Penrith: Man charged after attempted bike store robbery

Police were kept busy at the Defqon.1 music festival on the weekend. A 21-year-old from Werrington Downs was allegedly found with over 45 tablets after being searched by police at around 2.25pm on Saturday, September 19. He was charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’ and ‘possess prohibited drug’. An 18-year-old man from Pyrmont was allegedly found with over 30 tablets after being searched by police at the festival. He was charged with ‘supply’ and ‘possess’ prohibited drug as well as ‘malicious damage’. A 22-year-old man from Aberglasslyn was found with over 45 tablets and capsules as well as some white powder. He was arrested and was charged.

A man has been arrested and charged after an attempted break-and-enter at a bike store in Penrith last week. At about 2.00am on Wednesday, September 16, a man allegedly drove his Toyota Hilux to Henry Street in Penrith and parked it at a fast food outlet near the bike store. He then allegedly walked down to the bike shop with an alleged stolen ladder and attempted to break into the store. Due to the high quality of the security system in place at the store, the man was being live monitored during his attempt to break in. Police were called and were able to arrest the man. The 32-year-old from Wallacia was charged with various offences.

Penrith: Drug and drink driving operation

St Marys: Mystery over man’s death, witnesses needed

Penrith Highway Patrol and officers from the Random Drug Testing Unit conducted a high visibility drug testing operation in the North Penrith area, outside of the Defqon.1 festival. Testing was conducted between 3.00pm and 1.00am on Saturday, September 19. Officers breath tested 1348 drivers with two drivers giving positive readings, one of them more than three times the legal limit. 300 drivers were also drug tested with 15 people providing positive results for either cannabis or methamphetamine. 32 infringement notices were issued throughout the operation.

Police are appealing for information over a suspicious death of a man in St Marys last week. At about 12.00pm on Friday, September 18 officers from St Marys Local Area Command were called to a residence on Champness Crescent in St Marys after a man’s body was located. Officers are now appealing for information as they continue their investigations. A crime scene was established at the premises. After a post mortem examination was conducted on Monday, it was found the 46-year-old man had suffered a number of head injuries.

After 130 years, the final truckload of sand and gravel has been driven out of the Penrith Lakes site DALE DRINKWATER

Robinson, said the urban site will be relatively small compared to the land and lakes that will be rehabilitated. “There will be a small section in the north that might potentially become an urban precinct, it’s only a small section of the overall site,” she said. “We have areas put aside for potential core conservation, we’ve replanted the landscape with Cumberland Plain species and then of course, we’ve got the 770 hectares of lakes planted with aquatic plants.” It is anticipated the scheme will include a wildlife lake, two main recreation lakes, a regatta lake, a quarantine lake and additional small detention lakes and wetland areas. The PLDC is working with the NSW Government’s Office of Penrith Lakes to bring the final stage of the scheme to fruition.

@daledrinkwater

fter 130 years of quarrying, the last truckload of sand and gravel has left the Penrith Lakes Scheme site. On Monday, long term quarrying employees watched on as an era of supplying the Sydney construction industry with materials came to an end to make way for the next stage. Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC) Chairman, Keith Carew, said the site delivered over 160 million tonnes of sand and gravel to the industry in its lifetime. “It started in the 1880s, and today sees the last truckload go out the gate,” he said. “We pay tribute to a great western Sydney industry as it draws to an end, and to all our employees and contractors who contributed much to its success over generations.” The site quarried enough materials to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground 52 times, and at its peak, produced seven million tonnes of product per year. “That represented about 80 per cent of Sydney’s construction material requirements at the time,” he said. Rehabilitation on the 2000 hectare site

Long term staff of the Penrith Lakes Scheme watched the last truck be loaded with sand and gravel before driving off the site on Monday. Photos: Megan Dunn is expected to be completed by October 31, and will be transformed into parkland, lakes, native bush, recreational space and land for home sites. “The lakes will have the same amount of water as Sydney Harbour from the bridge

to the heads. It’s really exciting, as we now enter the final stage of the scheme, urban land development, which is a fantastic opportunity for the people of western Sydney,” Mr Carew said. PLDC’s Environment Manager, Dani

Assault at local school A 15-year-old boy is spending his school holidays in hospital after he reportedly suffered an aneurysm after he was allegedly attacked by another student at St Dominic’s College in Kingswood last week. Josh Lawrie and his mother, Lynda, reported the incident to St Marys Police on Tuesday, September 15, after Josh was allegedly punched from behind by another student the day before while walking through the schoolyard. It’s understood Josh has been told by his doctors that he won’t be able to play sport again and that he will have to take blood thinning medication for the rest of his life. Officers from St Marys Police Station confirmed they are currently investigating the incident. “A 15-year-old boy and his mother attended St Marys Police station to report an assault which was alleged to have occurred at a local high school,” a police spokesperson said. “After reporting the matter to police, the teenager was taken to hospital by his mother for scans and treatment of head injuries. Police have obtained statements and are now investigating.” The principal of St Dominic’s College, Michael Ronchetti, said investigations into the incident are underway. “The investigation is being conducted in close consultation with the students and parents involved,” Mr Ronchetti said.

Gambling breach Licensed wagering operator ClassicBet Pty Ltd has been convicted of illegal gambling advertising and fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $4,500 in legal costs. The Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing prosecuted the Penrith-based company after it published an advertisement promoting a ‘Premium Rewards Program’ promising punters will be ‘rewarded for every bet you place, regardless whether you win or lose’. In NSW, the Racing Administration Regulation prohibits licensed wagering operators from publishing gambling advertising that offers any credit, voucher or reward as an inducement to participate in gambling or open a betting account.

Helping students A $10 million investment from the NSW Government will help school leavers start their career through free pre-traineeship and pre-apprenticeship courses. “The NSW Government is committed to helping young people get the training to start their careers,” said Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres. “Students who complete these courses are more likely to go on to complete a traineeship or apprenticeship.” Students in Penrith will pay no more than $1,000 for government-supported traineeships from 2016 under new reforms to vocational education and training in NSW.

PUBLIC NOTICE Public Hearing Planning Proposal Reclassifying Certain Public Land in St Marys Town Centre Council has arranged an independently chaired public hearing for its proposal to reclassify certain public land in St Marys Town Centre. The land is generally located adjacent to the existing shopping centres in the Town Centre (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) and consists of open space and car parking. The land is already zoned to allow mixed-use development (residential, retail and business). The proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community to Operational to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy 2006. These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains Community Land. The proposal was on public exhibition from 24 August to 21 September 2015 and the exhibition material remains available to view (by request) at Penrith Civic Centre or online at yoursaypenrith.com.au/StMarysTownCentre The process that Council must follow to exhibit and consider the proposal requires an independently chaired public hearing. The chair of the hearing will then provide Council with a report on the hearing, which will also be made public. The hearing will commence at 6pm on Tuesday, 13 October 2015 at St Marys Corner Community and Cultural Precinct. There may be additional sessions arranged subject to the number of people who wish to address the hearing. If you wish to address the hearing, you will need to register. This can be done by completing the form available on Council’s website or from our Penrith or St Marys offices and submitting it to Council by 5pm on 9 October 2015. Alternatively, you can call 4732 7703 to register. We will request advice on the approximate length of time people would like to speak to allow the hearing schedule to be arranged (a maximum of 15 minutes). You do not have to register to address the hearing, but priority will be given to people who do. In case it is relevant to whether you wish to speak or for how long, please note that the independent chair will also review all written submissions made in response to the recent public exhibition. The chair has also indicated he will welcome any written material provided at the hearing itself. If you have any queries about the public hearing or how to complete the registration form, please contact Matthew Rose on 4732 7703 or matthew.rose@penrith.city

Payne secures Defence portfolio and a slice of political history

Early start for Greens candidate as Federal Election talk begins DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

ocal solicitor Kingsley Liu has confirmed that he plans to contest next year’s Federal Election. The Greens Candidate for Lindsay has questioned the Federal Government on its change of leadership to new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and what that means for the local area. “Exactly what policies will change with the change of leader in the Liberal Party, and in particular with the working community and small business people in greater western Sydney?” he asked. “Mr Turnbull, is by any measure, a better communicator than Mr Abbott, especially in economic matters, but the question we ask is whether the salesman [or] the product was the real problem.” Mr Liu highlighted the Government’s policies and what he called ‘broken promises’ of the 2014 Budget. He suggested that ‘attacks’ on pensions, unemployment, and higher education were unfair policies that caused problems in western Sydney. “After that Budget came down, no amount of salesmanship could save it,” he said. Mr Liu said he wants answers on many local issues such as jobs, transport, communications and infrastructure.

Western Sydney Senator Marise Payne is Australia’s new Defence Minister @troydodds

TROY DODDS

estern Sydney Senator Marise Payne has emerged as a winner out of last week’s Liberal leadership spill, securing the Defence portfolio. She becomes Australia’s first female Defence Minister. “I am the daughter of a World War II veteran, an enlisted soldier from Burrawang in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales,” Ms Payne said at her first press conference as Defence Minister on Tuesday. “I could not be prouder to stand here

W

today in that capacity, if no other. My father was my inspiration... he came back to Australia after World War II so proud of what this nation had achieved on the international stage. “Fast forward many, many decades, I have enormous pride in what this nation can and does do on the international stage and I look forward to continuing to make a contribution in that regard.” Known as one of the most difficult portfolios to manage, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will be hoping Ms Payne offers Defence some much-needed stability. Ms Payne said she wanted to be judged on her performance, not her gender.

Kingsley Liu “I would like to hear more from Mr Turnbull both on expansion of the NBN to cover all of greater western Sydney and a commitment to investment in rail infrastructure,” he said. “Real support for Lindsay requires more than a vision, more than words. It requires careful planning and Federal funding.” Mr Liu said he will keep a local watch on developments in Federal economic policies, such as the revenue and expenditure of the Budget.

Will you go sober this October? Dump the booze for a month and you’ll be making a major difference to children’s education

@jade_aliprandi

JADE ALIPRANDI

aking up the 31-day ‘Ocsober’ challenge this year will mean you’re helping to empower over 700,000 Australian children through the Life Education program. All you have to do is give up the booze for October, something South Penrith resident Erin Filla says she is happy to do. The funds raised from this year’s Ocsober campaign will go to Life Education, the not-for-profit organisation that provides preventative health programs to over 3,300 schools each year, the most popular program being Healthy Harold. Ms Filla, mum of three and step-mum of four, said she wants to help keep Healthy Harold alive. “I know how good Healthy Harold is for children after participating in the program when I was little – if my children can have that too, it’s all the more reason to do Ocsober,” she said. Life Education is hoping to increase its reach of 600,000 children to 700,000 by raising $700,000 through Ocsober. “It’s a really good thing to be able to tell my children what I’m doing and to show them I’m doing something about it and to hopefully help them in the process too,” Ms Filla said. “Being able to provide children with this important information earlier on is better than it being too late.” If you would like to help Ms Filla reach her fundraising target you can visit www. ocsober2015.ever ydayhero.com.au/ speake53 to donate. For more information on Ocsober or to sign up for the challenge visit www. ocsober.com.au.

Premier acts on domestic violence But one particular target set by Mike Baird has community group concerned and confused DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

remier Mike Baird has outlined that reducing domestic violence in NSW is one of his 12 ‘Premier’s Priorities’. However, his goal to reduce the proportion of domestic violence perpetrators re-offending within 12 months by five per cent has not sat well with one local organisation. Michele Ellery, from Penrith’s Queen of Hearts community organisation, deals with domestic violence victims daily, and said the small goal is not enough. “What an insultingly low target the Government has set,” she said. “Victims are hearing this. Five per cent – it doesn’t even make a dent, it seems like such a small retaliation.” Mrs Ellery questioned how measures like this can be achieved, with an issue she believes is so case-by-case sensitive. “What does that mean, what does that even look like? There’s been no study, there’s no funding to do profiling. Offenders have certain characteristics but it takes a certain circumstance to set them off,” she said. “They’ve set a target they can reach so it looks good when they reach it.”

P

Mrs Ellery called on more transparency and accountability by Premier Baird on the issue she believes will not be prevented by incarceration. “It’s actually a community problem, and as a community we have to get together and solve it,” she said. A spokesperson for Mr Baird noted Mrs Ellery’s commentary that the target should be higher. “This is perfectly valid – but a key element in all of the new State Priorities is that they should be realistic. Also, a target can always be exceeded,” he said. He said it is too early yet to determine what strategies will be developed to meet the target, but the Government is active in this area and has realised the scale of the problem. “Progress towards this target will be measured by the percentage of domestic violence assault ‘Persons of Interest’ proceeded against by police who are proceeded against for a new domestic violence offence within 12 months,” he said. The NSW Government is investing over $148 million over four years into specialist Domestic and Family Violence services. How can we stop domestic violence? Email news@westernweekender.com.au

Community housing concept could be a game changer DALE DRINKWATER

LOCAL RADIO

@daledrinkwater

year in the making, the slab for Sustain Community Housing’s first social housing project in Colyton has been laid. As the region’s newest not-for-profit social housing organisation, Sustain is testing out a new model for delivering affordable homes to those in need. Sustain’s Director, Josh Vrsaljko, said the way they build community housing enables the organisation to continue without government contributions. Sustain funds, builds and develops a multi-dwelling site, sells two thirds privately and then uses the profits of that sale to fund the community housing portion of the development. “The profit you make off the sales of the first two thirds would pay for the final third, making it fully unencumbered, so there’s no debt left on it,” he said. The first development, in Francis St, Colyton, consists of four, four bedroom two-storey duplexes that were sold privately, funding the construction of two more social housing duplexes next door. The four privately sold duplexes have started construction, and the two community housing duplexes will begin construction in eight weeks.

A

WW19007

Sustain Director, Joshua Vrsaljko The project is expected to be finished by March, and available to those in need through Wentworth Community Housing, who will manage the property. “Sustain develops the asset, such as the house, but we don’t provide any services, we partner with service providers like Wentworth,” he said. “Through them, one house will be affordable housing, and the other will be transitional.” Mr Vrsaljko said he started Sustain after building a house for Thorndale Foundation in Kingswood. “Belinda, their CEO, said their biggest issue is that they needed more accommodation, and I thought, well I can do that,” he said. Mr Vrsaljko hopes to continue the concept if the test model is successful.

Penrith’s historic Electric Light Station DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

015 has been a significant year filled with historical milestones for Penrith’s Bicentenary. However, this year also celebrates another massive milestone that changed the face of Penrith as we know it – the beginning of electricity in the region. To mark 125 years since Penrith switched on its first light, a plaque will be unveiled at the location of the very first Electric Light Station. On Friday, October 9 at 1pm, the community is welcomed to attend the

2

unveiling at the site near the Penrith Railway Station. Penrith Deputy Mayor, Ross Fowler said this is a huge year for Penrith’s lighting history. “The 30th of April 1890 was a very big day in the history of Penrith, when the foundation stone of the Electric Light Station was laid,” he said. “The Electric Light Station was in Belmore Street and on October 3, 1890, Penrith streets were illuminated and 60 homes and business gained electric lights. Penrith was the third town in NSW to use the electricity and the first in the Sydney region.”

Students to boost science skills Program explores a range of topics in a hands-on environment enrith MP Stuart Ayres has sponsored two students from Kingswood High School to participate in the ConocoPhillips Science Experience 2015 program. Lauryn Murphy and James McKeeMackenzie have accepted places which will enable them to attend the program that will be held at the University of Technology in Sydney later this year. “This will be a terrific experience for these students as it is a hands-on program exploring areas and topics such as forensic science, microbiology, environmental science and mathematical modelling,” Mr Ayres said. Held annually, the program is for students in Years 9 and 10 who have an interest in science. Each program is designed to provide the students with an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of interesting science activities under the guidance of scientists who have a passion for their work. The students will also have the opportunity to receive information about furthering their studies and careers in science, technology and engineering. “It is my pleasure to support these students and I wish them the very best for the program,” Mr Ayres said. For details about the program visit www. scienceexperience.com.au.

Penrith’s women through time: Quilt presented to Council

ne Penrith nail technician has set a high standard, taking out a top nail award against competitors from six countries. Jonny Diep Pham, from Nailicious Penrith, won the Highest Score Overall Champion award at the Nailympia Australia 2015 competition in Sydney last month. Mr Pham competed against nail technicians from Finland, Japan, Holland, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia, and feels validated for his achievement. “It’s amazing because all the hard work I put in is recognised,” he said. “I feel really accomplished, and it proves my passion for the industry and makes me want to push myself more. I wish to be a better role model by inspiring and educating other technicians.” The two day competition requires the 59 contestants across 203 competition seats to participate in up to 10 categories. Mr Pham competed in nine categories, placed in seven of them, and hopes his success will bring attention to an industry he is very passionate about. “Of the nine categories, six were live events at the show, and three were submitted works that I did previously,

Cr Fowler said he was impressed with the work that came from the women. “It’s always lovely to hear the great stories of the people behind these projects who put thought into what they do,” he said. The quilt showcases seven women including an artist, a teacher and youth worker, a politician, a world sports champion, a NSW woman of the year and a previous Mayor of Penrith.

arnardos Adolescent Services Penrith is in desperate need for more foster carers, and is pleading for the community to reach out and support vulnerable youth. The Barnardos Foster Care Program is recruiting foster carers across western Sydney to provide placements for 12 to 18-year-olds who are unable to live at home. Senior Case Worker at Barnardos, Shannon Kendrick, said the program is struggling to keep up with the amount of daily referrals they receive for young people that need a safe, stable home with a responsible adult. “Unfortunately we are unable to provide a placement for most of the referrals we receive, because we don’t have enough foster carers, particularly for adolescents, she said. Ms Kendrick is calling on the community to help Barnardos provide stability, security and safety to local youth. “The most important criteria for applicants is that they are over 25 years of age, have a spare bedroom and have patience and understanding for adolescents, she said. “All foster carers receive around the clock support, ongoing training and a

generous allowance of up to $850 per week. Ms Kendrick said carers can provide respite care, short term care or long term care until the young person turns 18-years-old. “There are different types of care and our program can support you in determining what type of care would best fit for you and your family, she said. 54-year-old Michael is single and works full time, and like many people, thought he was unsuitable to become a foster carer. Michael has provided a safe and comfortable home for many young people, including a young boy named Sean, who he developed a positive relationship with. Years on Michael still lives with 18-year-old Sean, and said while foster caring can be very challenging, the relationship of trust and respect developed with young people in his care has made it worthwhile. “It is the best thing I have ever done, no regrets! he said. If you are interested in helping local adolescents or just want to find out more information, you can call 1800 663 441 or jump online and visit www.fosterateen. org.au. Council has endorsed a report outlining Council’s financials as at June 30, 2015. The report indicates that from the 2014-15 financial statements, Council reflects a strong financial position and that all significant financial performance measures

are in line with expectations. The report summarised that after allowing for $46.6 million of capital grants and contributions, Council finished the year with a surplus from ordinary activities of $61.4 million. However, Council acknowledged that some of its business activities are not making commercial returns.

The 34 local residents on Council’s Community Panel have met for the first time, to learn about services and assets and start to deliberate on Penrith’s future. The residents will meet another five times between now and December to discuss the 70 points they have raised, such as economic development, planning, advocacy, growth, transport and parking. The Community Panel is being overseen by the newDemocracy Foundation, a non-partisan research organisation that explores less adversarial and more representative modes of public decision making. The community panel has been compared to a jury process that has been successful overseas, earning strong community support. The panel considered submissions and feedback from groups online at yoursaypenrith. com.au/community-panel and on social media. Residents can follow the questions, answers and deliberations and provide their own comments on this site.

email: news@westernweekender.com.au post: Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750

Three year terms good enough In response to Annette Thain (Dear Weekender, September 18). If a government is performing satisfactorily there is a good chance that it will be re-elected at the end of its term unless the media and dubious opinion polls convince the susceptible public otherwise. Heaven help Australia if the Rudd, Gillard, Rudd government had had a five year term. Ms Thain refers to 24/7 news cycles and poll driven policies. Do we all have attention deficit disorder and change our minds on a daily basis? Having been to a number of current affair question and answer discussions, when a question is asked sometimes there is only one favourable answer which is “push polling”. So polling results can be manipulated. PETER TOWNSEND, SOUTH PENRITH

Being an orator is not the highest prerequisite for PM in my books. Mr Turnbull can “talk” but he is not a leader – he is only interested in what’s in it for him. Mr Abbott may not have been as eloquent, but he had morals and the courage of his convictions. Fiona [Scott] has definitely lost my vote. MICHELE ORBAN, VIA FACEBOOK

Don’t play us for fools

for a local member and not the Prime Minister (Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender September 18). While that is true, it is simply not a reflection of reality. When I go to the voting booth, I generally see posters that depict both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, not just the local member. Polls in newspapers, and done by the parties themselves, ask about the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader, not the local member. Please do not insult our intelligence by playing the “it’s the system at work” line. That makes me extremely angry. The Liberal Party has lost my vote as a result of their actions in the past couple of weeks. I really don’t know what I will do at the next poll. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, VIA EMAIL

Why on Earth are the rate payers not the ones who vote who becomes Mayor? (McKeown tipped to be new Mayor, Western Weekender September 18). It is our town and it is our right! The current procedure should be abandoned immediately as it is does not pass the sniff test! NERREL LOADER, VIA FACEBOOK

Mayor should be our choice It should be up to the rate payers to elect the Mayor not party room politics. LORRAINE BALLANTINE, VIA FACEBOOK

Held at Parliament House in Sydney, Mark was recognised for his outstanding care and commitment to others. NSW Premier Mike Baird and Founding Director Gabi Hollows were on hand to present the students with their Fred Hollows Humanity Awards.

“It was a privilege and honour to meet Mr Baird and have him and Gabi Hollows present me with the award,” Mark said. Over 80 students from schools across the state attended the awards ceremony earlier this month. “The future of NSW and Australia are in great hands when you consider the incredible qualities of the young people nominated for the Fred Hollows Humanity Awards,” Mr Baird said. The Fred Hollows Humanity Awards are about recognising students who show outstanding care and compassion, know the value of humanity or who undertake community service.

@daledrinkwater

here are six very lucky children in western Sydney who are being cared for and taught by an awardwinning educator, Mary Quattromani. Ms Quattromani is registered with St Marys Penrith/Hawkesbury Family Day Care, and has been named regional winner in the 2015 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. With 25 years experience as an educator, Ms Quattromani will now go in the running to be named the NSW winner, and said she is flattered to have been nominated in the first place. “It was a very big surprise and I am very thrilled to be able to be nominated, let alone be the regional winner,” she said. “I try to involve the parents and the families of the children into the daily program as much as I can and get them

T

on board and keep them informed on what’s happening.” Ms Quattromani currently teaches children from the ages of two to five-yearsold, and places a heavy focus on making sure they are having fun while learning. “That’s how they learn – through playing and having fun,” she said. “Through the Early Year Learning Framework, I give them individual learning, as well as activities that can cater for all ages like arts and crafts, reading time, story telling, acting, dancing, yoga and music.” Family Day Care Australia Chief Executive Officer Carla Northam said educators like Mary hold a special place in the hearts of the families who nominated them. HISTORY

Turning back Time

Paceway opening was a big occasion Nathan Taylor reflects on the opening of the Penrith Paceway in 1964 and how it became part of the city’s fabric. More than 50 years later, the Paceway remains a Penrith icon...

I

f you think traffic is a problem in Penrith these days, spare a thought for people half a century ago when cars were backed up from the Penrith CBD all the way to St Marys as the region flocked to catch the newest and biggest show in town. The day was Thursday, April 16, 1964, and it will be long remembered as the day a Penrith icon was born. An icon that didn’t just bring the community together back then, but is still doing so more than 50 years later. Although there had been a racing track at the current Penrith Paceway site since the early 1920s, harness racing didn’t officially begin until that day in April when the first registered meeting was held. According to Penrith Paceway CEO of 17 years, Lorraine Pozza, Show Society President Dr Maurice Renshaw, worked tirelessly for a long time to secure a trotting licence for Penrith. “A special act of parliament was enacted to place Penrith outside the 30 mile (48km) limit that was in force at the time and had prevented a licence being granted to the city,” she said.

JD Watts and John Taylor on April 16, 1964 “By the legislation, Penrith would be declared a country area for trotting purposes. Dr Renshaw had been closely perusing the allocation of a licence throughout the past year and the major breakthrough came when chief secretary Mr C Kelly inspected the Penrith Showground area.” When the licence was finally given the green light in 1964, Penrith spectators streamed towards the showground from all directions from mid-afternoon to obtain a vantage point for the opening race at 7.30pm. The bookmakers ring had over 40 bookies with a waiting list of another 20 and crowds were in excess of 7000 people, which tested the capacity of the ground.

The opening night didn’t go without its fair share of teething problems though, with leading horses in the first two races visibly affected by the glare the photofinish flood lamps produced. But despite all the challenges of opening night, people continued to return to the Paceway in their droves for decades as it was the only place to witness top level harness racing in their own backyard. In 1984, the main grandstand was installed but it wasn’t until 1999 when the Penrith Paceway would undergo its biggest transformation thus far courtesy of a huge range of improvements brought about by President Max Laughton. Along with his fellow directors, Mr Laughton decided to make the bold but

necessary move to extend the track from 764 metres to half a mile (804 metres). He also decided to introduce a registered club for punters and families to enjoy whilst spending a night at the races. “1999 was a memorable time in our club’s history but we did have one particular teething problem back then,” Ms Pozza explained. “When we first opened the club in ‘99, we had a major blackout and we had to use candles… it was ‘Club by Candlelight’. It was quite unexpected and forced us to build a little substation on Ransley Street to prevent it from happening again.” The Paceway celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and will be a prominent icon in Penrith for years to come.

BUSINESS TIPS

Are you thinking about selling your business?

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor WS Business Centre

W

e all have opinions. With the rise of social media, some of us have suddenly found a broader and louder platform to share those opinions. You are probably familiar with the terms ‘trolling’ and ‘keyboard warriors’ in reference to online behaviour, and many of you are likely to have experienced it to some degree. Trolling generally amounts to bullying, with the ‘trolls’ hiding behind the anonymity of the online world. They use their keyboard to unleash sometimes quite vitriolic tirades against people who in ‘real life’ they would never confront or speak to in that manner. If someone is clearly being abusive or threatening towards you (or others) on your social media accounts, you should absolutely delete their comments (after taking a screenshot of them for possible evidence if required), and block them from being able to post again. But there are often more subtle occurrences of online ‘feedback’ that needs to be navigated. If you receive negative feedback or criticism on social media, your first

A

instinct is probably to want to delete it. Why would you want other people to see negative feedback about your business? However, you need to strongly consider leaving negative (non-abusive) feedback for others to see, because it is your response to that feedback that is going to show others a great deal about your character. If you receive a negative response, as soon as you possibly can, you need to respond to it, even if it is just to say “Thank you for providing feedback on your experience with our business. Can you please send a private message with some more details and we will look into this for you?” A response like this shows the complainant, and other customers, that you respond quickly, you are willing to listen and investigate, and that you are responding in a measured and polite manner. This will go a long way to repairing any damage that a negative review might have had on your business. You need a strong social media policy to guide how your pages operate.

s a business owner, you are constantly working hard to firstly meet your living expenses and then earn as much money as you can. With our elderly workforce getting nearer to retirement, looking at options to sell or close their businesses is starting to come on the radar. An exit strategy is important for any business. There are a few things to consider in preparing for sale because in any case, the potential purchaser will perform all due diligence and the transaction itself will be smooth if you respond quickly to any requests for information: • Are your financials up to date? A potential purchaser will want to review detailed accounts for at least the past three financial years. It is also great to have these audited as it will give the prospective purchaser comfort that they are accurate. • Is the business structured properly for a sale? If not, you may need to do some restructuring. Check things like if assets of the business are held by the correct entity and if there are assets that you do not want to include in the sale.

• Can the business operate under management? If not, perhaps you should think about reducing dependence on the owner and passing on skills, knowledge and relationships with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. • Are contracts in order? You should firstly have signed copies of contracts such as lease agreements, supply agreements or any other long term agreements which are critical to your business operating. Informal arrangements may need to be put in writing for security in buying into your business from the eyes of the purchaser. • Is your business subject to any disputes, liabilities or uncertainties that could have an impact post-sale? If any of this is evident, they will need to be sorted out to ensure that the purchase price or the purchaser’s desire is not affected. The sale process will obviously run more smoothly if time is taken to prepare your business for sale. Some require little work but others need to be planned years in advance.

Icon of stage & screen

fter enjoying Denise Drysdale’s bubbly and confident personality on screen, stage and radio for decades now you would assume that she is pretty comfortable with any situation that’s thrown at her. But the Aussie entertainment icon admits there’s still one part of the industry that terrifies her: the dreaded audition. “That’s the one thing that makes me absolutely nervous, sick making,” Denise laughed. Luckily those nerves have never held her back in what is an impressive career in the spotlight. When asked what keeps her going

Denise admits it’s really not up to her, but those who wish to see her perform. “I don’t decide to retire, it’s actually you the audience and the people that book me that decide,” she said. “It’s not because I say I want to be working, it’s whether someone rings up and offers me a job. “It feels fabulous and every time I get an offer I get off the phone and go ‘yes! another one!’” she laughed. It’s hard to think of many Australian performers that are more versatile than Denise Drysdale. She’s a dancer, presenter and comedienne who has won two Gold Logies, worked with some of TV’s biggest names including Graham Kennedy and Don Lane, and has appeared on numerous TV shows including ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’, ‘The Circle’, ‘Young Talent Time’, ‘Countdown’ and her own show ‘Denise’, which ran for four seasons. Out of all the projects she’s worked on, Denise says the one she is most proud of is her recent role on comedian Josh Thomas’ International Emmy nominated

show ‘Please Like Me’, where she plays Ginger, a patient in a psychiatric hospital who befriends Josh’s mother, played by former ‘Home and Away’ star Debra Lawrence. “I really enjoyed doing that show, it was lovely,” she said. “They were so professional and such fantastic, wonderful people.” Though she’s not currently on screen Denise is as busy as ever, doing 75 live shows this year alone. One of her stops will be to the Evan Theatre this Sunday, where she will perform a free members lifestyle show. “I do a lot of songs, a lot of jokes and impersonations,” Denise said of the show. “And then just chatting about my life, plenty of audience participation and just a general laugh, a big laugh actually.” This year Denise decided it was time to make the change to a simpler life. She sold her home in Gippsland – a property she had lived in for over 30 years – and many of her possessions and made the move to Queensland where she has purchased

land and has plans to build an eco home. “I want to build something for the future that’s not going to cost a fortune to live in and is using all the elements that we’ve got,” she said. “It’s actually also so my kids, if they inherit the house, which they will in the end, they won’t find it a burden.” Denise is passionate about sustainable living and believes that everyone can do their bit, no matter how small. “It doesn’t mean that you have to go out and build a house, you can do little things with your homes already,” she said. So far Denise is settling nicely into her new life as a Queenslander. “It’s not only the weather, I think the people are a bit freer,” she said. “I don’t know whether it’s the sunshine that brings out the smiles.” Denise Drysdale will be at the Evan Theatre on Sunday, September 27 for a free members lifestyle show at 2.30pm. Visitors tickets are $25. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www. penrith.panthers.com.au.

The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

REVIEW W EI V E R MUSIC

BOOK Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear Elizabeth Gilbert // KATE REID The latest release from ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ author Elizabeth Gilbert sees the best selling author offering up her thoughts on how to live a more creative life. Whether you’re a fan of self-help books or not Gilbert’s insights into creativity make for an interesting read. ‘Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear’ covers many different aspects of creative living, from getting up the courage to pursue a more creative career path or simply finding ways to incorporate creativity into everyday life. One of Gilbert’s main strengths as an author has always been her conversational and open writing style. Reading ‘Big Magic: Creative

Living Beyond Fear’ is like having a chat with a good friend, which helps to keep it from sounding too much like just another ‘preachy self help book’. While Gilbert does offer up some slightly left of field ideas, like the suggestion that ideas are just floating around waiting for someone to accept them, in amongst that is plenty of insightful and practical tips from a woman who has made a career out of creativity. If you didn’t warm to Gilbert in ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ this book probably won’t be the one to win you over, but for everyone else this release is well worth a read.

Higher Truth // KATE REID Chris Cornell, best known as frontman of Seattle rock band ‘Soundgarden’ and lead singer/songwriter for ‘Audioslave’, is back with a new solo release. This album is the first new solo material from Cornell since the release of ‘Scream’ in 2009 and it’s certainly an improvement on the pop/r’n’b sound he explored on that release. ‘Higher Truth’ offers listeners a collection of stripped back acoustic tracks which allow Cornell’s songwriting and vocals to take centre stage. At its best ‘Higher Truth’ hints at shades of Eddie Vedder’s work on the ‘Into the Wild’ soundtrack but never quite achieves the same reverence. Regardless this is a lovely album, with sincere, if not hugely memorable, acoustic ballads that showcase one of Cornell’s greatest strengths, his vocals. ‘Higher Truth’ offers something worth hearing for anyone who loves acoustic albums.

‘Entourage’ picks up where the hit HBO TV show left off. Movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) has ended his marriage, after just a few days, and is looking for a new movie project. Foul mouthed but lovable super agent turned studio boss Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) offers Vince a lead role in a new

release but Vince has one condition, he also wants to direct. Together with his entourage, manager Eric aka E (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and brother Johnny Chase (Kevin Dillon), Vince sets out to make the film, but as with all good stories, there’s more than a few bumps along the road. ‘Entourage’ features cameos from just about every big name you could think of including Liam Neeson, Jessica Alba, Warren Buffett, David Spade, Tom Brady, Rhonda Rousey, Gary Busey, George Takei, Mike Tyson, Pharrell Williams and of course Mark Wahlberg,

whose life was the inspiration behind the hit show. I have to admit, I was a huge fan of the TV show so I may be a little biased when it comes to this film. I get the feeling that fans of the show will be pretty satisfied with this release. It offers just as much humour, Hollywood style excess and cringe worthy moments as the show. While ‘Entourage’ can be viewed as a stand alone film fans of the show are sure to get more out of it than those who are new to the show and its cast of colourful characters.

A chilly vintage

W

hile the 2012 vintage may have gone down as the coldest in 16 years and one of the wettest in history in Canberra’s Murrumbateman area – only 2011 and 1989 were wetter – it did give winemakers ideal temperatures during the ripening period, excellent soil conditions and great vine health, and all of which resulted in superb fruit on harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon did particularly well, and local maker Shaw Vineyard Estate has now released a 2012 Estate Winemakers Selection Cabernet Sauvignon that at just $16 is great value for this stellar drop. One of the Canberra wine region’s highest-elevated vineyards, Shaw Estate sits across a sloping site that gives it both optimum sunlight and protection against potential frost damage (through good air drainage) and is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon – the 2012 Winemakers Selection a lovely cool climate drop with beautifully ripe blackcurrant fruit flavours on the palate and fine tannins to finish. One of those delightfully “easy, drink-now wines”, it’s a perfect match with a home-made beef or lamb meatloaf. One to note: Down in northern Tasmania the 2015 vintage proved a somewhat bumpy one for winemakers, with winter and spring of 2014 warmer than usual, the first month of summer uncharacteristically windy and wet, and during the April 2015 harvest, rainfall of around just half the usual average at 60mm. But despite all this, Pipers Brook Vineyard has crafted a wonderfully more-ish 2015 Ninth Island label Sauvignon Blanc.

INFLUENCES: Keith Urban, Zac Brown Band, Faith Hill, John Mayer. HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC: Playing music started for me at Nan and Pop’s place. Family members from both Mum and Dad’s side have played the guitar, but it was my Pop and Uncle’s love of the blues that first got me behind the drums in our ‘family jams’. FIRST ALBUM YOU EVER OWNED: Back in the day, my influences were a little heavier... So it’d have to be something from Iron Maiden. WHERE CAN PEOPLE HEAR YOUR MUSIC: www.blakedantier.com. MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Are you being insensitive? With the Sun and retrograde Mercury linking up in your relationship zone, concentrate on the needs of loved ones … for a change! Slow down and take the time to walk a mile in their shoes. Then you’ll have some small insight into what they’re going through at the moment.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

Attached Bulls – this week, romance and adventure are an intoxicating mix. Are you searching for your soul mate? Don’t look for love in the same old places – make sure you cast your net wide. With Mercury reversing through your wellbeing zone, it’s a suitable time to revise your dietary habits and fitness levels.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Geminis love to be completely up-to-date with the latest fashion trends but, if you chop and change too much, you’ll never achieve your own signature look. Enjoy experimenting, but don’t go too far. Be inspired by the writer Gore Vidal, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn”.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2015

Casa Cancer is the place to be but, with Mercury reversing through your domestic zone, there’s a backlog of chores to do around the home. And expect complications with a family member, as you exchange complex information. You may be able to lend your Crab charisma to an important cause.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Communication and conversation are the buzz words as you share opinions, learn a new skill or pass on valuable information to someone else. But expect some mix-ups along the way. With Mercury still in retrograde mode, the challenge is to stop talking long enough to really listen to others.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

In the run-up to Mercury turning direct, the pressure’s building and it may feel as if everything’s getting on top of you. The big lesson to learn is how to delegate. No one [not even a Virgo] is indispensable. When dealing with other people, have your wits about you. They will say one thing, but what do they really mean?

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

With Mercury still retrograding through your sign [until October 9] the universe is urging you to be more prudent and patient. Close relationships are in a state of creative flux so the more adaptable you are, the better the end result will be. Pace yourself and don’t get caught up in other people’s agendas.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Are you confused about an emotional issue? Sleep on it, and let a fresh perspective emerge. Be diligent when dealing with finances, there may be less in the kitty than you think. Saturn encourages you to become more financially literate, as you study and learn more about money matters.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

You’re frustrated by some people’s lack of speed and motivation, but it’s not the time to push buttons. Be proactive and strive to anticipate problems before they happen. When it comes to social media, double-check before you post anything online. Otherwise there could be some embarrassing mix-ups!

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

With Mercury reversing through your public/reputation zone [until October 9] the image you’re conveying may be at odds with the real you. So be extra careful in the way you communicate with others this week Capricorn. Otherwise your confidence could be misinterpreted as cockiness.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

You’re keen to dream big dreams, take action and change the status quo. Avoid jumping in and being too impulsive through, as it will just upset those around you. You also feel like indulging your passion for sport, travel or adventure, but double-check all the details, otherwise there’ll be mix-ups and delays.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Fish are in for an unsettling week, as retro Mercury and nebulous Neptune confuse communication and muddle emotional issues. You’ve got a lot on your plate BUT don’t imagine things are worse than they actually are. A spot of delicious daydreaming is fine BUT don’t let it slip into the realm of dangerous delusions.

fice of State Revenue so that the transfer of the property is exempt from stamp duty (saving you tens of thousands of dollars). It is important to remember that this option is only available in relation to the breakdown of a marriage. While this stamp duty exemption also applies to de facto couples, in this context a binding financial agreement pursuant to the Family Law Act 1975 is necessary. This is a much more complex process that requires both parties to seek the advice of a suitably qualified family lawyer. Another relatively unknown fact in the context of relationships and property ownership is the stamp duty exemption available to couples who want to transfer a property from one name into joint names. Provided that the transfer results in both parties owning an equal share of the property, no stamp duty is payable on this transaction subject to certain conditions. This is one of the few examples where a person can acquire a share in a property and not have to pay stamp duty. Have you or someone you know been through a marriage breakdown? One of the hardest things about a marriage breakdown is deciding how to divide the matrimonial assets fairly and doing so without incurring tens of thousands of dollars worth of legal costs. The most significant asset that usually needs to be transferred or disposed of following the breakdown of a marriage is the matrimonial home, and quite often in these circumstances one party will “buy out” the other party (acquire their

McMillan PET HEALTH

We have been seeing lots of new puppies lately and we thought it would be appropriate to discuss socialisation for your new puppy. Socialisation is the process where puppies develop positive relationships with other living things. The most important time for socialisation is during the first three to four months of life. The experiences your puppy has during this time have a major effect on developing personality and how well they get along with people and other animals. It is important that we provide frequent, positive social experi-

ences during these months to prevent antisocial behaviour, fear and aggression. Even after four months of age, continued exposure to a variety of people and other animals is important in maintaining good social skills. Puppies need to meet as many new people as possible in a wide variety of situations.

This being said, it is important not to overwhelm them or have a negative experience. Start with calm introductions to one or two people at a time. If your puppy handles this well then increase the number of people, noise level and activity level. It is a good idea to have new people to give your puppy a small treat as this will teach the puppy that new and strange people, with an outstretched hand are a positive thing. Once a puppy has learnt the sit command, have each new friend ask your puppy to sit before giving a treat. This also teaches a proper greeting and makes the puppy less likely to jump on people. It is important that a young pup has opportunities to learn about children; they often act and behave differently to adults and dogs often see them as a different species. People running, riding bikes, roller skating and riding scooters seem very different to young puppies. So learning that these things are not scary is important. Take your puppy to visit friends’ homes to interact with their pets and family. Ideal friends to visit are those with calm pets and calm children. Sometimes people are told to keep their puppy home until all of the immunisations are complete.

Walker FINANCE

Remember that time you missed a credit card repayment and got stung with a nasty fee? No? Well, it might surprise you to learn that there are some people who do. What is a credit rating? A credit rating is a comprehensive record of your credit history. If you have utility accounts, credit cards, a mortgage or other types of loans with a registered organisation, there’s most likely a file out there detailing how well you managed that debt. What’s the point of this document?

Your credit score is very important

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

Well, it helps banks and other lending institutes determine the level of risk involved with loaning you money. If the report shows that you’ve paid your bills in a timely fashion and have maintained a good credit-todebt ratio, you’re likely to be eligible for the loan. On the other hand, if you’ve regularly missed payments and repeatedly applied for new lines of credit,

your bank’s probably not going to lend you very much at all. From taking out a home loan to expanding your business, there are countless reasons why you may require credit in the future. Boost your rating and improve your chances of credit approval with these tips: 1. Get your credit report The first step to improving your credit rating is to identify what your current score is. 2. Redirect bills when you move If you plan on moving house, get in touch with all your utility providers beforehand and inform of them of your new address. 3. Prove that you’re responsible with debt Being completely debt free is wonderful, but it does mean that you’ll have no credit history for providers to measure you against. Demonstrate your trustworthiness by purchasing day-to-day items with a credit card and paying it off on time. 4. Apply for credit only when you need it Constantly applying for new lines of credit raises some red flags and can damage your overall rating. Apply for loans only when it’s absolutely necessary.

into losing huge amounts of weight very quickly the best way to improve your health is with small, sustainable changes. Don’t make the focus solely about weight. Instead try to include a wide variety of nutritious foods into your diet. Love chocolate cake? Well there’s no need to give it up forever, just aim to enjoy these types of less nutritious foods in moderation. When it comes to exercise try out a few different activities until you find the one you love. This way you’ll be much more likely to make it a long term habit. And if you do feel you’re struggling with disordered eating or exercise habits, and are looking for support, it’s best to speak to your GP about referral to a health professional, such as a psychologist or dietitian.

one that ignores the fact that life, and health for that matter, is not solely about weight. The other point that shows like this seem to miss is that good health is not just about the physical, mental well being is just as important. Shaming people and sending the message that a person’s self worth is tied into their weight is not the best way to promote a healthy mindset. Instead of torturing yourself

Today our news comes to us pretty much 24/7. We are saturated by news; internet, Facebook, smart phones, television, radio and even though their sales are falling, the humble daily newspaper. Some people have observed that this constant news cycle means that major news items only stay in our focus for a short period of time to be replaced by some other news event. It can also mean that we are swamped by news, sometimes overwhelmed by catastrophic, tragic events

I’ve got some good news for you!

from around our globe. News can lose its impact on us as we become numb, even forget what is happening around us. Yet the Bible makes a claim about a news event that continues to impact all people for all time. It is the announcement of the gospel, that is, the good news about Jesus. The New Testament book of Mark opens with these words;

“The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Tim Keller has said that “the gospel is an announcement of something that has happened in history, something that has been done for you that changes your status forever.” This is why the announcement about Jesus is such good news; it is not something that is here today and gone tomorrow, the gospel of Jesus is an announcement that will impact all of your life, now and for eternity. Jesus coming into our world brings the good news of forgiveness and life forever with God. Jesus brings peace with God. He brings direction for life. Jesus brings confident hope, that even in the face of the most terrible circumstances, sickness, disappointment, or hurt, nothing can separate you from His love.

Penrith women’s health centre welcomes back

Dr Alexandra Macpherson Penrith Women’s Health Centre is very pleased to announce that Dr Alex MacPherson is rejoining our Women’s Wellbeing Clinic along side Dr Christina Tse, Nurse Joanne Perks and Cathy Brown our Massage Therapist. The Clinic operates on Mondays Tuesday and Wednesdays and Bulk Billing is applied. Dr Alex has a wealth of experience and very high skills in dealing with Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health. Dr Alex will be available for Cervical and Breast Screening, Contraceptive options including IUD insertions and removals. Dr Alex does not do medical terminations of pregnancies but she does offer pregnancy options advice/counselling. Pap tests The Pap test is a quick and simple test that checks whether there are any changes in the cells of a woman’s cervix (located at the neck of the uterus/womb), which can lead to cervical cancer if left untreated. Most women will not experience any symptoms and may not develop symptoms if it progresses even to cervical cancer. The only way to know if there are abnormal cells present is to have a Pap test.

• The Pap test should then be repeated every two years. • Approximately 8 in 10 women who develop cervical cancer have either not had a Pap test or have not had them regularly. Facts you may not know: 1. Women in same sex relationships also need to have regular Pap tests. HPV is commonly spread through skin-to-skin contact with the genital area, and can be found in women whom have never had sexual contact with men. 2. If you have ever been sexually active it is important to have regular Pap tests, even if you are no longer sexually active, have had the same sexual partner, or have been through menopause, as changes in the cells may take some time to develop. The risk of cervical cancer does not decrease with age. Penrith Women’s Health Centre implores all women to be regular with their screening. Early detection is imperative. Please phone the Centre on 4721 8749 to book your appointment today!!!

• Regular Pap tests reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer by 90% and save more than 1,200 women each year in Australia from cervical cancer.

WW19412

• Pap tests are recommended for all women aged between 18 and 70 years, starting within two years of first sexual activity.

The new season of ‘The Biggest Loser’ – now under the name ‘TBL Families’ – started recently and with that comes plenty of frustration about the message the show portrays. Losing 10+ kilos a week, exercising for hours a day to the point of vomiting and restricting your calorie intake is not the healthiest way to, well, get healthy. Yes, it may be possible to drop large amounts of weight when you are in a controlled environment with a personal trainer on hand and no ‘junk’ food, but it’s not the real world, and even if it was it’s

Plume A unique way to lose weight and keep it off

Jan Plume Consulting 0450 262 399

ave you ever tried to lose weight only to fail or to lose it and then put it all back on again? Guess what, you are not alone. The harsh reality is that most people fail at weight loss. Not long ago one of the current affairs programs reported that nearly all the contestants from the first season of ‘The Biggest Loser’ had within a short period of time put all the weight back on again. Why? Because, we are all running subconscious programs/blueprints/beliefs about who or what we are. When there is a conflict between the conscious mind and the subconscious

H

mind, the subconscious will always win. The answer is to change your self-image in the subconscious first. Consider the following statistics. For those that make the right healthy lifestyle changes and combine it with hypnosis they are 80 per cent more likely to reach their goal weight. Take a moment to think about that and realise how small the success rate is without hypnosis. But the more telling statistic is that with hypnosis they are 150 per cent more likely to keep it off long term. Imagine what that means. That of the small number who succeed

without hypnosis, most will put the weight back on. So, to put your weight loss on speeddial and stop the cycle of yo-yo dieting combine your weight loss program with hypnotherapy. What have you got to lose other than, too much effort with very little gain / excess weight / poor health / low self-esteem... and for the those that think they require some extra help there is always the three session virtual Gastric Band Program. Do you have a wedding, school reunion or some other special event coming up? Think ‘Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss’.

Medical & Fitness Centre 4736 6567 www.medicalfitness.com.au

lmost half of all Australians have at least one chronic (long term) medical condition and around one in five Australians are affected by multiple chronic diseases. As there are such high numbers of Australians affected by chronic disease, Medicare provides access to rebates of up to FIVE visits in a calendar year to an allied healthcare provider under specific GP plans. What is a chronic disease? To put it simply it applies to a number of diseases that are likely to be present for six months or longer. Some examples include asthma, cancer, musculoskeletal

A

conditions, mental health conditions, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke. Many of these diseases are preventable and/or can at least be delayed sometimes by addressing lifestyle changes such as diet and lack of exercise. If you think you might be suffering from or affected by a chronic condition then you should visit your GP, if you haven’t done so already. Your GP will be able to assess your condition and arrange a plan to effectively treat and manage your chronic or complex condition. This may involve the help of another healthcare provider.

In which case, your GP can tell you if you are eligible to access the Medicare rebates available. These plans can and should be reviewed every three months. Examples of allied health professionals that are covered by Medicare rebates include: Exercise Physiologist, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Dietitian, Occupational Therapist, Podiatrist, Mental Health Worker, Psychologist, Speech Pathologist, Aboriginal Health Worker and Osteopath. For more info search for ‘Chronic Disease Patient Information’ on the Department of Health website at http:// health.gov.au.

Tip 1: Nutrition Eating clean is very important. I want to focus on one aspect, breakfast. EAT it and make sure that it isn’t a sugary cereal or pastry with a tall vanilla cap and three sugars. Skipping breakfast also is not going to help you drop weight, if anything it’s making sure you put on weight in the long run. Try muesli with fresh fruit and a dollop of Greek yogurt or poached eggs with avocado on wholegrain toast, if you are running low on time how about a smoothie to go. Perfect balance to get you started for the day. Tip 2: Hydration Hydration can curb hunger and boost your metabolism by up to three per cent, cleanse your body of waste and can even act as an appetite suppressor. Carry a bottle around as much as you can. You will start drinking it without even noticing it. Stay away from soft drinks and alcohol. Tip 3: Exercise Exercise is essential in creating a calorie deficit which enables you to decrease body fat. The Australian Government Department of Health currently recommends 2.5-5 hours of moderate intensity

physical fitness per week. 30 minutes to an hour a day during the working week is a good way to achieve that goal. Make it part of your daily routine and get a training partner to make it fun and productive. ay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. This reaction causes irritation to the eyes, nose and throat. Hay fever occurs when nasal passages come in contact with allergens. The nasal passage releases large amounts of histamine, which causes swelling and inflammation. The histamine also causes an increase in mucus production. Pollen from trees and grass is a common allergen carried by the wind. The majority of pollen is produced in Spring, which is why hay fever is more common at this time of the year. Hay fever that occurs all year round is usually caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites and pets. Hay fever can disturb sleep, impair daytime concentration and performance. The symptoms vary from person to person and can include: • Runny nose • Sneezing • Tickly nose, throat or ears • Blocked nostrils • Puffy eyes • Irritating cough as well as many others The other concern with hay fever is that bacteria can build up in the sinus and cause an infection. There are a number of treatment options for managing hay fever: • Decongestants: these can be used short term to relieve symptoms quickly. It is important to speak to your health professional if you are using them on a regular basis. • Corticosteroid nasal sprays: these can be used on a daily basis to prevent symptoms.

and we welcome him to the Club and look forward to making him feel at home within the team and importantly within our club culture. “I am sure Dario will receive a very warm welcome from our fans as we all look forward to a very successful season ahead.” Vidosic will take up a Wanderers marquee spot for the next two A-League seasons. The Wanderers play their first game of the season on Thursday, October 8.

Glen Carling’s untimely death occurred late in 2009 at the early age of 43 when he suffered from a heart attack, leaving behind his wife and three children aged 12, 10 and eight at the time. Growing up in the area, Mr Carling was a local at heart, just like his family, who will be holding the golf day at the local Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club. “He grew up in the area and played football here and was just a very loved man,” his daughter, Gemma Carling said. “We all still miss him every day but the golf day is a great way to remember him – I think everyone appreciates the effort that goes into it.” After raising an unexpected $22,000 for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Foundation at last year’s golf day, the Carlings feel like they can match that amount this year. “It’s a really good and fun way to raise a lot of money for a good cause,” Ms Carling said.

Gemma, Madisen and Jake Carling with their mum Tracey Carling and their late dad Glen Carling The golf day will be held on Friday, November 20 at 7.00am at the Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club. Fowler’s farewell wish for Penrith Outgoing Mayor says Penrith must be the location of new outer western Sydney stadium NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

utgoing Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler has declared Penrith a logical choice for the construction of an outer western Sydney sporting venue under the State Government’s recently announced Stadia Strategy Implementation report. The report gave six recommendations, one of which was the construction of a dedicated rectangular stadium in western Sydney. Councillor Fowler said Penrith’s location as a regional city centred between Sydney’s north-west and south-west made it an obvious choice. “Penrith has a catchment of half a million people which is expected to grow in excess of a million people in the coming decade,” he said. “Our city is known as a sporting event destination welcoming more than 1.3 million visitors annually. More than 20 per cent of these are attending special events, annual, monthly and weekly events.” Cr Fowler said his vision for a new Penrith Stadium was a multi-purpose facility that caters for many sports, concerts and other events.

O

The current Penrith Stadium “A new stadium in Penrith will not only give us a first class sporting and event venue, it brings with it development opportunities that will grow local employment and the Penrith CBD economy,” he said. Panthers Group CEO Warren Wilson said Penrith’s location, population and

projected growth make it the clear choice for a new stadium. “Penrith is the heart of western Sydney, an exciting destination for both Australian and international visitors, and the most logical choice for a new stadium in the region,” he said. “I am confident the State Government

will make the right decision and build the world-class venue the people of Penrith deserve.” Cr Fowler added that Penrith Council will continue to work with the State Government, Panthers, the NRL and others to put their case forward for the new stadium to be built in Penrith.

Heath’s win a Shaw thing Giants vice captain takes out Kevin Sheedy Medal at awards night NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

WS Giants vice captain Heath Shaw has capped off a magnificent 2015 season, taking out his first Kevin Sheedy Medal. In just his second year at the Giants since switching from Collingwood, the 213-game veteran was presented with the club’s highest individual accolade by inaugural coach Kevin Sheedy. The 29-year-old played every game in 2015, polling votes in 19 of the 22 games, to take out the club champion award with 117 votes. Departing midfielder Adam Treloar finished in second place on 98 votes with co-captain Callan Ward a close third on 91 votes. Shaw averaged a career-high 24 disposals and seven rebound 50s per game this season and led the competition for rebound 50s and running bounces. Giants coach Leon Cameron congratulated Shaw on the win. “His influence since arriving at our club has been enormous,” he said. “He is a leader at this club and sets high standards for his teammates in everything he does.”

Photo: Narelle Spangher Shaw also took out the 2015 Coaches Award and the 2015 Members and Fans Most Valuable Player. It was a remarkable year for the Giants who finished season 2015 in 11th position with 11 wins and 11 losses to their name. Giants Chairman Tony Shepherd said the club took huge steps forward in 2015, with great things in store next season. “This was a season to expect big things from the Giants and we didn’t disappoint with more wins than ever before and

we were right in the finals hunt for the majority of the season,” he said. “This year we’ve broken our membership record and our home crowds have increased by 17 per cent at Spotless Stadium and StarTrack Oval in Canberra. “We’ve also had a successful year in re-signing a string of young stars that can see what this club is building.” Inaugural coach and former Director Kevin Sheedy was presented with his Giants Life Membership on stage.

Ashes-winning spin bowler Erin Osborne has signed with the Sydney Thunder for the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League. Osborne, who was a major part of the Southern Stars’ recent Ashes triumph, will join her Australian teammates Rene Farrell and Alex Blackwell at the Thunder. The off-spinner first represented NSW in 2008/09, and has been a regular member of the national squad since first being selected for the Southern Stars at the back end of her debut season. The 26-year-old believes the inaugural women’s T20 competition is an exciting prospect. “I’m really looking forward to it, playing with the Thunder and some quality Aussie players like Alex Blackwell and Rene Farrell,” Osborne said. “I’m all ready to go in a new competition that will be exciting and a little bit of an unknown as well.” Having played cricket at the highest level for many years, Osborne believes the WBBL will help boost the exposure of the women’s game in Australia and abroad.

Panthers play for Grand Final spot THE Penrith Panthers are favourites to secure a spot in the Holden Cup Grand Final when they take on the New Zealand Warriors this evening at Suncorp Stadium. The Panthers finished the regular season in first position and enjoyed last weekend off, while the 7th placed Warriors thrashed Brisbane 45-10 to secure their place in the Preliminary Final. The other Preliminary Final sees North Queensland battle Manly in Melbourne on Saturday. The clash between Penrith and the Warriors kicks off at 5.15pm.

Wanderers too good for APIA Leichhardt THE Western Sydney Wanderers concluded their 2015-16 preseason with a solid 2-1 win against APIA Leichhardt at Leichhardt Oval on Tuesday night. Goals from Italian marquee Federico Piovaccari and Dutch winger Romeo Castelen set up the win in the first half before a host of changes in an experimental second stanza. The Wanderers play Perth in the FFA Cup Quarter Finals on Tuesday evening. The match will be played at Dorrien Gardens.

Fox is the first woman in either the K1 or C1 to win three consecutive titles and she joins only two other paddlers – one of those being her father Richard – to win a hat-trick of World Championships. Fox dominated Sunday’s final, completing the course without a penalty and finishing a massive 4.91 seconds ahead of the Czech Republic’s Katerina Hoskova in a time of 113.51 seconds. “It’s a great feeling,” said the 21-year old superstar from Leonay. “Even sweeter to put down a good run in a competitive field on a very hard course. I’m just really happy with how I dealt with the pressure in the final. I really enjoyed racing here.” Fox, who won silver at the London Olympics in 2012, said she’s recently changed her tactics in the C1W. “In C1 I generally try to be more conservative, but now that it’s so competitive I have to start taking more risks to win,” she said. Finishing behind Fox has become a bit of a habit for Hoskova after the pair occupied the same podium positions in the 2015 World Cup Series season standings. “I just wanted to be in the final and then in the final enjoy the atmosphere and try to do a good run without any mistakes. It was perfect.” Fox struggled in the K1, finishing fourth.

FOOTBALL: The men’s premier team from the St Clair United Soccer Club won the coveted 2015 Men’s Nepean FA Cup final at Cook Park earlier this month, coming from behind to defeat the Penrith Rovers Football Club 2-1. The Rovers controlled the early stages of the match and scored the first goal but when their side was

reduced to 10 men, a longer lasting St Clair outfit finally overcame the classy Rovers’ efforts to score the last two goals. This is the second year in a row that St Clair United has won the coveted knockout competition, which is played in conjunction with the regular winter season fixtures.

Grade cricket returns this weekend and Penrith are desperate for a positive start NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

fter missing out on the finals last season by the smallest of margins, Penrith Cricket Club first grade coach Steve Small is confident his side can improve this season. The Sydney Grade Cricket competition gets underway this Saturday morning with Penrith taking on St George at Hurstville Oval in the opening round. Small said his side is primed and ready for a successful season. “During the last few weeks we’ve played in a couple of trials as well as a some inter-club games, which all went really well,” he said. “Our playing roster is very similar to last year’s but we’re hoping to get more out of our batsmen. I think the talent was there last season but we’ve just got to try and get some more runs out of the top half of the batting order and we’ll be competitive again.” After a couple of distractions last season, which included the shock death of Phillip Hughes, Penrith’s first grade side missed out on the finals by one competition point. Small said he’s hoping for a much smoother ride in the months ahead.

“Last season we had the tragedy of Phillip Hughes, there were a number of rain-affected games and we only just missed the finals,” he said. “We’ll be looking to make amends and that will come off the back of some really strong batting performances as well as continuing where we left off with the ball.” In a huge blow for Penrith they could be without representative bowler Josh Lalor for the one day clash against St George with the 27-year-old battling a thumb injury. On top of that Penrith will also have to contend with a very strong St George side which is set to include the likes of Moises Henriques, Josh Hazlewood and Trent Copeland. “St George are going to be a tough assignment first up but we have a good record against them,” Small said. “We’ve also got a really good record in one dayers as well, making the finals the last few years, so we’re pretty comfortable in that form of the game.” Meanwhile, the club held its annual season launch last Saturday evening at Howell Oval with victorious England coach and former Penrith player, Trevor Bayliss, in attendance. All teams for the 2015/16 season were also announced to the audience during the night.
