abor’s John Thain has been elected as the new Mayor of Penrith for the next two years.

The veteran Councillor was elected unopposed at Monday night’s Council meeting, as was his new Deputy Mayor, Liberal Councillor Tricia Hitchen.

The Weekender can confirm that the Labor and Liberal parties formed an alliance to essentially freeze out independent Councillors Kevin Crameri, Jim Aitken and Marcus Cornish.

Sources have also confirmed that Penrith’s second and last Mayor over the four year term will be a Liberal Councillor.

The last time Cr Thain was Mayor was in 2005-2006, and he is delighted to be back at the helm.

“I’d like to thank my Councillor colleagues for their support, I am very humbled and excited to be Mayor... I look forward to working with all of you,” Cr Thain told his Councillor colleagues.

“We are on the right track, we need to build on our success, continue to bring investment, and resolve parking issues.”

Outgoing Mayor Karen McKeown also commended Cr Thain’s unopposed

appointment to Mayor, saying it was a rarity.

“It is now the second time that you have been elected unopposed,” she said.

“I can’t think of any time in my 12 years of Council where any candidate has been elected unopposed.”

The opposite side of politics also congratulated Cr Thain, led by Liberal stalwart Ross Fowler.

“Mr Mayor, congratulations. We are a group of people here to represent our city regardless of our political beliefs. Penrith is the political party we all represent,” Cr Fowler said.

Liberal Councillor Mark Davies said it was an important time for an experienced campaigner to be leading the city.

“I think it’s important we have someone with good experience, you’ve been on Council a long time,” he said.

New Deputy, Cr Hitchen, said she is looking forward to working with Cr Thain.

“It’s going to be a very steep learning curve... As you said before there are no silly questions and expect some to come your way,” she said.

State Londonderry MP Prue Car and Federal Lindsay MP Emma Husar were both at Monday night’s Council meeting to congratulate Cr Thain.

he timetable has changed somewhat over the years but I remember the weekend 7.33am Mountains train from Penrith to Central vividly.

As a kid, I’d travel into the city almost every Saturday with my Mum and Dad. Mum would head to the shops, while Dad and I, joined by his brother Noel, would set off on a familiar routine: second hand record stores, lunch and then the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

We’d be back at Central in time for the 2.02pm train home and next Saturday, we’d do it all again.

As most teenagers would, I grew out of those Saturday trips to the city eventually but until recently my Dad kept them up with his brother, and other friends.

Through all of life’s changes and challenges, the Saturday trip to the city was a staple of Dad’s life for decades.

Last Saturday morning, my Dad Steve lost his battle with cancer.

As so many who have dealt with the ramifications of this insidious disease would know, the cancer journey is a difficult and draining one.

But Dad never gave up hope.

I could not have been prouder of the man who for 653 days, fought his illness with a tenacity and inner strength that all of us could only wish we had if dealt a similar hand in life.

This could not have been exemplified any better than on September 16 when he was determined to see the ‘Bootleg Beatles’ at Panthers Leagues Club.

Despite being in hospital only a few days before, he managed to get to the show – his last in a rock and roll journey that played such a significant role in his life.

He was very proud of the Weekender and was always interested in what the topic of this weekly column would be.

And he was exceptionally proud when I started presenting shows on 2UE over summer a few years back. In so many ways, things went full circle.

Ironically, I was also standing in one of 2UE’s famous studios when I first received the news about Dad’s kidney cancer diagnosis.

The last two years may have been tough but they also allowed Dad and I to spend more time together.

For a little while during the winter of 2015, we started doing the ‘river walk’ two or three times a week.

We talked about everything – family, life, sport, music and of course, the latest developments with his treatment.

In 2015 I took him to his first rugby league grand final, and what a game it was – that incredible finish will always have an extra special meaning to me.

And on November 13 last year, he saw me marry the love of my life.

He only got out of hospital the day before, but I know he wouldn’t have missed that day for anything and I will be forever grateful that he shared that very special occasion with us and our entire extended family.

If I ever got the chance to say one more thing to Dad, it would simply be this: thank you.

I could not have asked for a better father. His love, his compassion and his caring nature never once disappeared in the 61 years that he was on this Earth.

Life threw him a lemon in the end, but he leaves behind memories and a legacy that will last forever.

Dad simply loved music, and his record and CD collection would probably be unrivalled in Australia.

Cliff Richard was at the top of the list but from Ricky Nelson to Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Glen Campbell and Suzi Quatro, his list of musical interests was long and varied.

Of course, music was “better in his day”. It was a point we argued about regularly, but just quietly, he was right.

Dad was no thrill seeker and certainly no adventurer, but he did teach me about passion.

He was so dedicated and passionate about the things he loved in life, and I know that has rubbed off on me – I blame him for my love of memorabilia and other collectables.

Career wise, Dad could have quite easily run a record, CD or DVD shop and would probably have wiped the floor with most of the staff at the big music and DVD stores with his knowledge, but it wasn’t to be.

He drove trucks for all of his working life and was still driving until the day he was diagnosed with cancer.

He was probably the hardest worker I’ve ever met, and instilled in me a work ethic that I believe has rewarded me well in life’s journey so far.

Dad also, inadvertently, started my interest in the media.

We’d drive down to my grandmother’s house in the school holidays, and Alan Jones would blare through the speakers of his favourite radio station, 2UE. It ignited a flame and I pretty much knew from a young age that a career in the media was something I wanted to pursue.

Hidden epidemic needs action Increase in reports of violence against women over 45-years-old

enrith has been labelled a domestic violence ‘hot spot’, and it’s not just a result of partner abuse.

Many older women accessing support services from the Penrith Women’s Health Centre are escaping their violent children, according to centre manager Jane Gold.

At a conference on violence against older women at Western Sydney University last week, Ms Gold said the most prominent abuse is financial, carried out both psychologically and physically.

Reports of violence against women over 45-years-old has increased at the Penrith centre in the last three years, but Ms Gold believes it has previously been underreported.

“I think people are just coming forward more now. They’re at home reading the local paper and think, ‘hang on this sounds like me’,” she told the Weekender.

Ms Gold said this violence can be more complex to fix than a basic relationship breakdown, with women refusing to throw their children or grandchildren out on the street.

“It takes a lot of self-esteem and selfworth building for them to realise they don’t deserve this,” she said.

A report in The Daily Telegraph this week said Penrith was one of six domestic violence “hot spots” that would receive significant government intervention in the coming years.

enrith Councillor Karen McKeown is furious over the State’s decision to construct a ‘rapid build’ maximum security prison close to homes and businesses in Emu Plains.

On Monday, the Minister for Corrective Services David Elliott announced the latest prison in Emu Plains will deliver over 200 local jobs and stimulate the economy.

He also announced the dormitory-style prison will be able to hold up to 400 maximum security prisoners to help respond to a rising prison population.

However, Cr McKeown said the new facility – that will be built beside but separate to the current minimum security female prison – is itself a security risk for the community.

“You’re talking murderers and rapists,” she said.

“They’re planning to put in up to 400 male, maximum security inmates, and it’s basically going to be a shed plonked in the middle of our community, housing high risk offenders.”

Cr McKeown said she received notification of an increase in the number of inmates, but when she asked the Government for more information she did not receive a response.

“This is a problem of their own making.

They have closed four prisons – Grafton, Berrima, Kirkconnell and Parramatta – and now they find they have to build more to deal with capacity.”

This is the third of four ‘rapid build’ prisons to be built in the state, the first two at Wellington and Cessnock, which have four wings each with four pods of 25 inmates.

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said these centres allow inmates to complete programs vital to their rehabilitation.

The prison was approved last week and a construction contract will be awarded soon.

End of the road for iconic local shop Schubach name is synonymous with Penrith but newsagency is no more after closing for the final time JADE ALIPRANDI

t’s the end of an era for local Penrith business Schubach’s Newsagency after the owners of the 77-year-old store shut up shop this week.

John and Chris Schubach, who have run the High Street business for most of their lives, said it was time to say goodbye as they closed the doors for the final time on Wednesday.

“We will miss the customers and our staff however, we are very much looking forward to having the freedom and flexibility to travel, and spend time catching up with friends and family,” Mr Schubach told the Weekender.

“We have four adorable grandchildren and John’s 100-year-old mother, Leila, and we will love getting to spend more time with them,” Mrs Schubach added.

The newsagency was first established in 1939 at the original location of 495 High Street by Mr Schubach’s father John Senior and his wife Leila, who ran the business until John’s passing in 1988.

It eventually moved to 516 High Street, with Mr and Mrs Schubach continuing on the family business, along with their three children who worked at the famous

shop on weekends and during the school holidays.

“It’s been a great experience to be a part of such a long established Penrith business,” Mrs Schubach said.

“We have had the pleasure of employing so many wonderful staff members, many who still pop in to say ‘hello’.”

The couple said not only will they miss their business, but they’ll also miss the people they’ve met through running the newsagency.

“We’ll miss our lovely loyal customers, some of whom you can set a watch by what time they come in each week. We’ve forged great friendships and have lots of laughs every day,” Mr Schubach said.

“It’s the end of an era, and it’s a bittersweet feeling.”

The duo say they will continue to live in the local area and have thanked the community for their support over the years.

“We just want to say a very sincere and heartfelt thank you to all our loyal customers and wonderful staff over the decades,” the pair said.

“It’s been such an honour being part of your lives for such a long period of time.”

The shop location in the Penrith CBD is currently up for lease.

Out of service: Long opening hours axed DALE DRINKWATER

hen former NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell first announced the launch of Service NSW centres, he said longer opening times would “make it easier for people to do their business with Government at a time that suits them”.

Three years on, and you’ll be doing that business at a time that suits the Government instead.

The Penrith branch of Service NSW on High Street will have its trading hours cut back to 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, from the original 7am to 7pm.

The centre will remain open on Saturdays between 8.30am and 3.00pm.

However, there is added confusion over the new opening hours as the Service NSW website lists different new trading hours to the revised sign at the front of the High Street centre.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car, said the reduced trading hours will mean over 60 per cent of Penrith’s working population will miss closing time.

“For a large percentage of our working population who leave home early and get home late each day, Service NSW will now be unavailable to them,” she said.

“People who leave home at 7am and get home at 6pm will not be able to access the Penrith Service NSW Centre.”

She said the reduction of opening hours will add more pressure to staff at Penrith, just one month before the St Marys RMS is due to close on October 24.

Ms Car also fears the move to cut costs will result in staff lay-offs to a service she said has already brought in $91 million to the State Government.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, defended the Government’s decision, and denied there will be staff cuts.

“The new opening hours will have no impact on current staff numbers and all staff will continue to be rostered according to their contract hours,” he said.

He said the decision is about moving staff to work parts of the day where the customers most need them.

“The Penrith Service Centre will remain open from 8.30am to 3pm on Saturdays, when demand remains strong,” he said.

“The revised weekday opening hours follow a detailed examination of customers which showed that across the Service NSW network more than 94 per cent of our customers visit our service centres within the new revised hours.”

Council this month approved an eight-storey apartment block which is in the ‘Urban Plaza’ precinct of the Thornton development.

The $19.8 million development will support Penrith’s thriving tourism industry.

Penrith currently has 1.3 million visitors annually and that figure is expected to double by 2025. ● Council has welcomed additional State Government funding which will make early community childhood education more affordable for local families.

Council will now be able to reduce fees for four and five-year-olds and remove nearly all fees for low-income families.

All Council’s preschools will benefit from the additional funding. ● Families across the City will receive free trees to grow and nurture: Council is delivering up to 2,000 free trees and shrubs to 30 privately run children’s centres this month.

Council is delivering the One Tree Per Child program as an important part of our Cooling the City Strategy. Planting trees and shrubs is an effective way to help make our region more liveable, as well as improving our environment.

Driver hit hard after failing to submit breath test

A motorist who played dumb when confronted with a Breathalyser has been given a rude shock after he was sentenced for ‘high-range drink driving’.

Penrith Local Court heard Sajjan Singh was detected travelling below the speed limit, and when intercepted by police, kept sucking on the tube rather than blowing preventing a reading from being recorded.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell asked the defendant if he understood that his failure to submit meant he would be found guilty of the highest charge.

“Five failures is deemed to be a highrange drink driving for the purposes of sentencing,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

Magistrate Clisdell said it was unclear just how intoxicated Mr Singh was, but noted police said he smelt heavily of alcohol and was slurring his words.

He was convicted, barred from driving for 15 months and fined $1,000.

Mother drove drunk because she couldn’t get home delivery

A mother who drove drunk to the shops with her kids because she couldn’t get home delivery has copped a serve from a local magistrate.

Sarah Elizabeth Hughes faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘high-range drink driving’.

The court heard the 32-year-old had driven the two-to-three minute journey up the road where she collided with a chained fence.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said this was no doubt because her reaction time was too slow.

He told her to imagine that she hadn’t collided with the chain, but rather hit a wall at speed and one of her children got hurt.

“She now knows there is never a distance safe to drive when alcohol is in your system,” her lawyer told the court.

She was convicted, fined $1,000, dis-

qualified from driving for nine months and ordered to fit an interlock device to her car for 24 months.

Woman must get clean or face jail time, says magistrate

Tina Narelle Macdonald has been given one last chance to rein in her drug use or risk jail time after pleading guilty to a range of drug-related offences.

The Cranebrook mother-of-one faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with possessing a stolen credit card, possessing a prohibited drug, driving with an illicit substance present in her blood and breach of bond.

The court heard the 41-year-old had commenced experimenting with the drug ‘ice’ two years ago and became a habitual user, sparking a number of ‘possess prohibited drug’ convictions, which she received bonds for in May this year.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell accepted the defendant “couldn’t do much” with the credit card she allegedly found on the floor of Westfield because “she doesn’t look like a male Chinese person”.

But he said while he knew drug addiction was difficult to overcome and he didn’t expect her to get clean overnight or even on her first attempt, she had to do “a bit better than seven or eights weeks”.

“We now have four Section 9 bonds that we can yank if you misbehave,” he warned.

“If that doesn’t work, maybe a short, sharp stint in jail will get you to the bottom of the birdcage so you can make your way back up.”

She was disqualified from driving for three months.

Woman mistakenly believed she could get behind the wheel

A woman disqualified from driving until 2020 has successfully appealed her latest driving convictions.

Kelly June Tonicia fronted Penrith District Court last Friday in a bid to have two ‘driving while disqualified’ convictions

thrown out. The court heard Ms Tonicia was barred from driving for five years for ‘driving under the influence’ and was convicted of ‘driving while disqualified’ while in custody serving time for her involvement in a robbery.

It was here, when she appeared before court via video audio link, that she “formed the mistaken belief that her disqualification had ended and she was allowed to drive”, her lawyer submitted.

He said she heard the words “Section 10” and “quashed” leading her to believe that her disqualification had ended.

He said to complicate things further, when she was pulled over for a random breath test in September 2015 after her release, a licence check failed to show up the disqualification.

“This only served to confirm, in her mind, the mistaken belief that her licence disqualification had ended,” he said.

Three days later she was pulled over again and successfully passed another RBT, but this time her disqualification was identified on police data.

Ms Tonicia’s solicitor said his client told the officer “I thought I got a Section 10”, which “corroborates” the belief she was allowed to drive.

The Crown submitted the onus was on the mother-of-three to check her status with the RMS. Judge Mark Buscombe admitted his mind had wavered listening to the submissions, before allowing the appeal “not without some hesitation” and setting the convictions aside.

“She’s still off the road until 2020 and is subject to parole,” Judge Buscombe said.

Drunk driver picked up after speeding through school zone

A “community minded” man who drove drunk with his young son in the car has been ordered off the road for six months.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Steven John Weber he was 15 to 20 times more likely to have an accident being behind the wheel with a mid-range PCA.

“You’ve made a mistake, you’ve got to pay the price,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

The court heard the 56-year-old, who has close ties with Emu Plains Rugby League and Penrith Football Club, came under notice when he was nabbed speeding through a school zone.

“Whatever you do, don’t drive or you’ll add two years to your current disqualification,” Magistrate Clisdell warned.

He was convicted and fined $900.

Man loses his licence after driving while suspended

Travis Euan Houston has been forced to hand over his licence after pleading guilty to ‘driving while suspended’.

Mr Houston fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he also pleaded not guilty to failing to disclose the identity of the driver.

He was convicted, fined $600 and disqualified from driving for six months.

He will defend the other charge at a hearing on January 9.

Woman to front court after completing traffic program

Eliana Alejandra Salas has had her matter adjourned in order to complete a traffic offender program.

Ms Salas faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘driving while disqualified’, ‘stopping in a bus zone’ and ‘breach of bond’.

Her matter was re-listed to November 3 for sentence.

Man hit with big fines after failing to turn up to court

Terrance German has been convicted of a string of offences in his absence after failing to turn up to court.

Mr German was hit with more than $2,000 worth of fines after being convicted ex parte.

He was found guilty of being unlicensed, using an unregistered and uninsured car and not keeping left of the dividing line.

Oxley Park: Teenager uninjured during frightening robbery

A young girl was allegedly robbed by three men and a woman earlier this week, with police calling for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

At about 12.00am on Monday, September 26 a 16-year-old Oxley Park girl was walking on Forrester Road, North St Marys when she was approached by a female and three males.

The four of them allegedly walked towards the girl and when she passed them, one of the men barged her while the others yelled at her.

The group allegedly demanded she hand over her property and she complied.

They stole her wallet and the contents.

She wasn’t injured but police are calling for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

The female alleged offender is described as Islander in appearance, and was wearing a pink jumper and grey track pants at the time of the alleged attack.

One man is described as Caucasian, with a slim build, and was wearing a blue jumper, one is described as a medium build with dark skin, and the other is described as African in appearance with a large build.

The man was arrested and charged by police for ‘assault’.

The nurse is receiving treatment for communicable diseases.

Jordan Springs: Man arrested after biting partygoers

A man who became intoxicated at a party on the weekend was arrested and charged by police after he allegedly bit two fellow partygoers.

Police arrived on the scene at Fleet Avenue on Saturday night, September 24, after reports the man was becoming aggressive.

He allegedly resisted arrest but was eventually restrained.

Penrith: Police hunt sauce thieves after bizarre robbery

Police are on the hunt for a number of men after a box of sauce and a number of bottles of syrup was stolen from a fast food store in Penrith.

At about 2am on Wednesday, September 29, two men walked in to the store on Mulgoa Road and ordered a meal.

While staff were away from the counter the duo allegedly took a box of sauce and three BIM bottles of syrup before they left the restaurant and got in their car.

St Marys: Officers shaken but not injured after crash

Penrith: Man arrested after spitting in nurse’s eye

A nurse from Nepean Hospital is currently undergoing tests after a patient allegedly spat into her open eye.

At about 8pm on Monday, September 26, a 23-year-old male patient from Cranebrook was being treated in the emergency department at Nepean Hospital.

A 34-year-old male nurse from Glenmore Park was treating the patient when he began to exhibit violent behaviour towards the staff.

The alleged offender was restrained by security but managed to allegedly spit into the open eye of the nurse.

Two police officers were left relatively uninjured after their vehicle rolled onto its side in St Marys on the weekend.

At about 11.35pm on Saturday, September 24, police officers from St Marys were responding to a priority job when their warning devices were activated.

When they were at the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Hewitt Street, Colyton, the police officer turned right into Hewitt Street.

In doing so, the vehicle rolled onto its side and collided with the gutter and the pedestrian walk light and came to rest.

No other motor vehicle was involved in the accident.

Going guarantor on a loan You have probably heard of the term “going guarantor” before. This usually occurs when somebody requires assistance to obtain a home loan or some form of finance and the bank wants another person who holds assets to guarantee the performance of the borrower’s obligations under the Loan Contract.

The most common scenario where a guarantor relationship arises are: 1. When someone is buying a home and require their parents to provide their own property as collateral to secure the loan.

2. A purchase of the property through a self-managed superannuation fund. Warning ahead of busy storm season SES shows dangers of entering floodwaters in dramatic demonstration at Whitewater Stadium JADE ALIPRANDI

SW State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers took to the waters of Penrith Whitewater Stadium late last week to demonstrate just how dangerous it is to enter floodwaters as the next storm season approaches.

Having performed more than 500 flood rescues this year, SES volunteers are concerned the number could rise over the storm season if people continue to ignore the warnings.

Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliott, said risking your own life, and those of SES volunteers is preventable.

“NSW SES volunteers give up their time from work and family to protect their communities in floods and storms but people can do their part to limit the risk of injury and damage this storm season by staying out of floodwater,” he said.

“Entering floodwater is extremely dangerous and it not only risks your life but the lives of our volunteers who have to perform the rescue.”

Last Friday, September 23, SES volunteers performed a demonstration of a car submerged in water and the work required to rescue people stuck inside.

They also demonstrated how they would rescue someone who is being rushed down stream by heavy floodwaters two separate ways – one in a boat and one with an SES volunteer having to enter the water themselves.

“It’s unfortunate that the volunteers have to perform these flood rescues – people need to appreciate that when you’re putting your own life at risk, you’re also risking the lives of three or four SES volunteers,” Mr Elliott said.

NSW SES Acting Commissioner, Greg Newton, said the previous storm season was particularly busy for the volunteers.

“We responded to more than 19,000 storm jobs last storm season and much of that damage was preventable,” he said.

“The storm season runs from October to March but severe weather can happen at any time, so it’s important people prepare their properties by maintaining yards, balconies, cleaning gutters, trimming overhanging branches and checking their roofs are in good condition.”

According to research conducted by NRMA Insurance, one in four people or 25 per cent of car owners have driven through floodwater and of those, close to half did so because they didn’t think it was dangerous.

Cabbies driven to despair over parking Taxi drivers take their fight over Jane Street parking issue to Penrith Council chambers

enrith taxi drivers say they are fed up with having to drive around in circles looking to pick up customers after upgrades to Penrith Station have left them with just four spaces in the taxi rank on Jane Street.

The upgrade to Penrith Station is a State Government issue, but with what they claim to be no response from state representatives, taxi drivers took to the Penrith Council chambers on Monday night in protest, hoping to gain support in their bid for more taxi spots.

President of the NSW Taxi Operator Driver Association (NSWTODA), Anne Turner, told the Weekender the drivers are angry and have had enough.

“Jane Street is our major pick up point for customers but there is only room for four taxis and even then, the public are parking in our zone and leave their cars there sometimes too,” Ms Turner said.

“It’s a safety issue, especially when a lot of our passengers are elderly or disabled and have to walk a long distance to find a taxi when we can’t park in our rank – we need more spots.”

Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish came out to talk to the drivers about the situation.

Cr Cornish told the Weekender that although it’s a State Government issue, he supports the drivers and the public alike.

“The taxi drivers definitely have a right to be angry as do the private vehicles who pick up their friends and family,” he said.

“The whole thing has been stuffed up by the State Government and Stuart Ayres who are in charge of the train station project – the whole thing needs to be rethought before it goes any further and if anything they are downgrading the station in terms of functionality for everyone who uses it.”

Mr Ayres said the government is committed to striking the right balance between commuters and taxis during the construction period.

“During the construction phase there has been a reduction of available spaces so to assist with accommodating taxis, four spots have been allocated on Jane Street to replace the loss of six spots in the previous taxi circle,” Mr Ayres told the Weekender.

Taxis were initially allocated more spots on Jane Street but a public outcry saw Transport for NSW reduce those spots to allow for a public drop-off area.

Penrith lacks good burgers. We want burgers. We crave burgers. Please give us burgers.”

This is the plea from one Penrith local who desperately wants American burger chain Carl’s Jr. to set up shop in western Sydney.

“Carl’s Jr. is the last glistening hope that could give us what we truly need,” John Harris wrote on his change.org petition.

But according to former ‘MasterChef Australia’ contestant Jay Huxley, people like Mr Harris just don’t quite know that delicious burgers are already available in Penrith, seven days a week.

Take the Double Hux for example, available already at Mr Huxley’s popular steakhouse Hux Grill, and soon to be available at his new burger bar – Hux on a Bun. “I think that’s Penrith’s best burger – if there’s a better burger in Penrith I’m yet to eat it,” he said.

“We use 100 per cent wagyu beef, and we don’t pre-grill anything, it’s all grilled fresh.”

“We love to go to Frangos for a big chicken burger, and High St. Depot does a great pulled pork burger,” he openly admitted.

Cancer fight continues The fact that Australia is a world leader in medical research is again shown by the article ‘Positive signs for new cancer drug’ (Weekender, September 23). Pancreatic cancer is one of the most painful insidious forms of cancer that is very hard to diagnose in its early stages and the prognosis is very grim indeed with the sufferer usually succumbing in a short space of time. I am sure that a cure will eventually be found but it is a shame that it takes so long between laboratory development and clinical trials. In the meantime, sufferers can only watch from the sidelines and endure rigorous life-altering chemotherapy treatments.

Time will pass but the loss of life in the meantime is to be regretted. Governments should be directing more funds for research instead of throwing it away on overseas aid.

Dance festival concern Penrith Council is playing Russian Roulette with its continuing approval of the Defqon.1 dance festival. With 77 drug arrests last week (Weekender, September 23), it was just dumb luck there wasn’t a drug death as in previous years. Council is clearly happy for Penrith to be an annual tourist mecca for drug pushers during a national ice epidemic.

Funding aims to help locals be more responsible with their pets

enrith’s youngest Councillor, Josh Hoole, has welcomed a State Government grant to boost responsible pet ownership in the region.

“It is vital that we are supporting our communities in promoting responsible pet ownership,” Cr Hoole said.

The $10,000 in funding through the Responsible Pet Ownership Grants aims to target programs that will increase

microchipping, lifetime registration and de-sexing rates.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said this will be achieved through community education workshops and free microchipping through Penrith City Council.

“Penrith City Council will team up with the Animal Welfare League and local vet clinics to offer training on responsible pet ownership,” he said.

“Any owner who then completes the training will then have access to free microchipping and de-sexing.”

Competitors to show off worldly skills DALE DRINKWATER

1-year-old Chris Roberts is new to the landscaping world, but he could just be skilled enough to dominate it.

The third-year TAFE student and Kingswood local is about to show what he’s got to offer at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia competition in Melbourne, in hopes to be Landscape Construction’s national champion.

Mr Roberts will be competing alongside a fellow classmate from the Ryde TAFE campus, who he competed against in the regional competition in September last year.

“It was a singles event in regional and for national they combine us, Jordan was my classmate, he came first and I came second,” Mr Roberts said.

“It was a full day where we had to do a bit of paving, brickwork and decking... At nationals, there will be a besser block wall, some paving, turf, a timber table and two sandstone walls.”

Judges will assess the pair on their team work and, while it sounds daunting, Mr Roberts thinks the pair have it ‘down pat’.

“We’re not too nervous and are pretty confident, we’ve been training together as a team once a week at TAFE,” he said.

Mr Roberts will be one of over 500 young men and women between 16 and 24-yearsold going for gold at the WorldSkills national competition in 60 different skills.

WorldSkills CEO, Brett Judd, compared WorldSkills’ competitors to Olympic athletes but posed just one question.

“Which of the two groups might have the greatest impact on Australia’s future economy?” he asked.

“The extraordinary young people that compete at the national competition will come out the other side with enhanced technical ability but more importantly, they’ll be more confident in the choices they make. “[They will] be armed with a range of leadership and life skills that will serve them well as they look to start their own businesses, employ workers, pay taxes and have a positive, lasting impact on our society.”

The biennial competition will be held at Melbourne Showgrounds from Thursday, October 6 to Saturday, October 8 covering a whopping 25,000 square metres of floor space.

A staggering $10 million worth of materials will be used at the competition, including eight tonnes of steel, 90 kilograms of chocolate, 3250 stems of flowers and foliage, and over 7500 bricks.

New seat installed A beautiful carved wooden seat has been installed at Tench Reserve for residents and visitors to sit and enjoy our beautiful Nepean River views.

Penrith Council worked with the Western Sydney Aboriginal Men’s Group to install the seat and recognise the valuable work the group does in our community.

Councillor Karen McKeown said the seat mirrors those placed in parks in Parramatta and Blacktown as a totem symbol of an Aboriginal men’s meeting place. The Western Sydney Aboriginal Men’s Group regularly meets at the river.

“They have been meeting at Tench Reserve for some time and this seat will provide a sense of place and belonging for their members, as well as be a beautiful resting place for others,” Cr McKeown said.

Wearing odd socks Locals are expressing their ‘soxiness’ by pulling on their odd socks on Friday, October 7 while helping people with mental illness land on their feet.

The Odd Socks Day campaign will raise money to expand Grow’s free and highly effective mental health programs which have been helping adults and at-risk youth for nearly 60 years.

It is also a call to put an end to the stigma of mental illness, which is preventing so many from seeking the help they need, keeping them isolated and in pain.

Students turn history into reality Local teenagers spending their school holidays tackling the Kokoda Trail JADE ALIPRANDI

ive young Penrith locals are currently on the trip of a lifetime after taking off to walk the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea last Saturday.

Out of the 10 applicants that were interviewed, 17-year-old Annelise Isaacs, 17-year-old Madison Turner, 16-year-old Braidon Berridge, 18-year-old Emily Pollock and 17-year-old Brendon Speechley were all selected to be part of this year’s Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge, a 10-day trek across the 155km Kokoda Trail.

All in it for different reasons, one unanimous response as to why they were taking part was for the challenge.

“It’s definitely going to be a mental, physical and emotional challenge,” Madison told the Weekender.

“I’m physically prepared but it will definitely challenge me in other ways,” Braidon added.

After finding out earlier this year that they would be spending their school holidays in Papua New Guinea, the teens say they hope to gain some perspective.

“Learning about the culture will be a big thing, and I think I’ll definitely have a sense of appreciation for what people went through,” Braidon said.

Over several years, Penrith RSL Club and Penrith RSL sub-branch have partnered as major sponsors of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge, covering the cost of the airfare, accommodation and food expenses, reaching well over $6,000 per participant, and with so many

participants this year, it’s a joint cost of over $36,000.

The group thanked the RSL for their contribution to the program, particularly Emily Pollock.

“I have to say a massive thank you to the RSL because I got accepted last year but got really sick – they’re letting me do it this year and they’ve been amazing about it,” she said.

The Australian and NSW Governments have released the Western Sydney Rails Needs Study as they look towards investing in transport infrastructure in western Sydney.

Penrith Council has long been an advocate for this infrastructure to

connect outer western Sydney in the North and South via the airport. This will activate new employment hubs and create significantly more jobs than an airport alone.

Preliminary research indicates more than 60,000 new jobs would be created through delivery of a new rail line that runs North-South across western Sydney.

All levels of Government, in fact anyone with common sense agrees we need those jobs sooner rather than later to address our huge jobs deficit.

I encourage everyone to look at the study and the discussion paper to ensure our collective voices are heard in gaining the best outcomes for the people of Penrith and western Sydney.

It’s the little things that count: Fridge will make a difference

hile her husband Michael was in palliative care at Nepean Hospital, Marion Brierley noticed the ward was missing one thing – a decent-sized fridge to store his favourite food, ice cream.

Now, Mrs Brierley has given back to the people that gave so much to her and her husband during his sickness, and bought a fridge with funds gathered at his funeral.

“He loved ice cream but we struggled to put it in the freezer because there was only a tiny little space,” she said.

“It was then I said to myself that I’d like to give back to the hospital and buy a fridge when I get out of here.”

Sadly, after a 12 month battle and two weeks in Palliative Care Ward S4D, Mr Brierley passed away in July from colon cancer, at the age of 62.

He and Mrs Brierley had lived a fulfilling life, sharing 44 years together travelling in their ‘troopy’ and seeing the most beautiful parts of Australia.

At his funeral, friends and family from all over Australia made donations for the palliative care unit at Nepean.

magine a warm spring day full of food stalls, live music, dragon boating and making your own smoothies by pushing on bike pedals – that’s what’s in store for Nepean River’s new festival, the REAL Festival.

The two-day November 4 and 5 festival was officially launched on Tuesday, and will celebrate the River, Environment, Art and Lifestyle activities of the Penrith region.

Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen was delighted to announce the iconic event during her first official outing in her new role.

“The Nepean River is a major asset to the community, it’s also a major part of our identity, it winds through and connects our towns and our villages and it deserves to be celebrated,” she said.

Cr Hitchen said Council has made strides to celebrate the river through events such as Music by the River, Sunday Siestas and Cinema by the Park.

“But our community told us they wanted more, an iconic event that celebrates and reinforces our connection to the river,” she said.

Over two days, the REAL Festival will

transform Tench Reserve with food, art and music – bringing the Nepean River to life.

Friday night will be a time to relax with food and entertainment from 5pm to 10pm, and Saturday from 8am to 4pm will offer workshops, talks and tours to inspire locals to look after their health.

“There is also a much deeper meaning to the name REAL, it’s about connecting to nature, enjoying the simple things in life and taking out time for things that matter,” she said.

“Looking after your health, the environment and spending time with the people you love – these are the things that are real, and this is what we are encouraging people to indulge in at the REAL Festival.”

One of the highlights of the REAL Festival is Bike N Blend, whose blender bikes have been specially designed to blend smoothies and cocktails.

The event also coincides with a free performance by the Australian Ballet at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on November 5, for Ballet Under The Stars.

o you find that the majority of accolades relating to achievements in business tend to focus on young people?

While it is a great feat to create a successful business by the time you are 25-years-old (or even 35), those who are older might be forgiven for thinking that they are ‘too old’ to start a business.

There are a few reasons why starting a business when you are over 50-yearsold can make you a better business owner than starting when you are younger.

First and foremost, you have life experience. You have likely encountered many different people and personalities, you can see the bigger picture in situations, and you are more likely to have patience to deal with each step. You are also likely to have a larger, and more diverse, network that you can draw on to share their advice or offer their services. And if you require finance, a lending institution is more likely to let you borrow what you need, as you are likely to have other assets or a track record of financial stability.

At an older age, you are more likely to better understand where your passions lie.

Younger business owners can get caught up in the idea of running a business, more than passion about the idea itself.

You are far clearer about what you like and don’t like. And you are highly likely to have experienced failure.

This means you will have learnt valuable life lessons and may fear failure a whole lot less than when you were younger. You understand the importance of contingency plans and you know from experience that bouncing back from failure boosts your self-esteem. eing a sole trader is great for the initial start of your business, but at some point you’re going to need more resources.

Of the four business structures, the most difficult to get right is the partnership structure.

Companies is a matter of issuing shares for investment, sole traders rely on their own resources and trusts appoint an agent to use given resources for the benefit of others.

But a partnership is a juggling act of resources and efforts. Furthermore partnerships come in many forms depending on the number of partners and the nature of the partners. Some partners are silent partners who contribute resources (such as cash and assets) in exchange for a share of the profit. Others are active in the management of the business sometimes contributing both effort and resources.

The balancing act comes when partners claim a proportion of the profit based on their contribution to the business.

This is when a formal partnership agreement is important. The agreement can specify the profit distribution, the

Noni takes us to another world

ne of the great things about storytelling is that it allows us to form emotional con nections with characters that we may never have had the chance to meet in our day to day lives.

For much loved Australian entertainer Noni Hazelhurst, this is what attracted her to take on the role of an ageing, homeless woman – the loan character in

the upcoming play ‘Mother’, which opens at The Joan in October.

“I feel one of the functions of the arts is to promote empathy and to emphasise that we as human beings share more similarities than differences,” Noni said.

“I think more than ever we are living in very divisive times and very judgmental times. I guess I leapt at the chance to bring this character to life because if I can get one person to rethink their attitude or to give their time to people who need it then to me that’s wonderful.”

The one woman show about Christine – a woman who has lived a colourful yet troubled life – was written specifically for Noni, who worked with the play’s

director Matt Scholten at the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2013.

After Noni finished up with the TV show ‘A Place To Call Home’ she was looking to take on a new acting challenge. During a discussion with Scholten she came up with the idea of creating a one woman show.

The pair joined forces with playwright Daniel Keene – known for his tendency to produce works that push the envelope – and decided to focus the production around the themes of judgement and empathy.

10 days later Daniel had produced a script.

“It was just this most beautiful piece of

Last week the singer/songwriter released the new video for his single ‘Light Up The Dark’. The song features in the Australian film ‘Spin Out’, which includes a cameo by the artist himself.

Taylor is certainly no stranger to the screen. He was the runner up on ‘The X Factor’ in 2013, just three years after he appeared as a contestant on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’.

The decision to give talent shows another go certainly paid off, with his debut self-titled album rocketing to number one in 2013.

he Joan’s Richard Bonynge Piano Series is ending for another year, but not before a final performance from the amazing Australia Piano Quartet.

These innovative and captivating chamber musicians – Rebecca Chan (violin), Daniel de Borah (piano), Thomas Rann (cello) and James Wannan (viola) – will present their show titled ‘Spirit Hands and Golden Strings’ at The Joan in October.

The performance is a unique combination of strings and piano, and will feature works by Mozart and Brahms,

along with a new work by Lachlan Skipworth.

Australia Piano Quartet are regular guests at festivals around the country and have received numerous national and international awards.

here would be others, we suspect, would lay claim that a wine comprising no less than five varieties, was the result of their carefully hand-selecting fruit off as many vineyards or blocks as there were varieties, and then judiciously blending these to specific proportions of each.

But not John Davis, owner-vigneron of Peppertree Wines in the Hunter Valley and his Head Winemaker, Gwyn Olsen when it comes to their 2016 Rogue Vineyard ‘Wild in the Wood’ Hunter Valley Field Blend. Because they’ll readily tell you that this one’s the result of a “misfit” block planted somewhat haphazardly 20 years ago with left-over Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc from other blocks rather than be wasted, and today simply all-in machine harvested.

And that resultant wine turns out in fact to be a really rewarding drop, with lingering individual varietal characteristics and lovely mouth-feel. Pay $30 and enjoy on its own as warmer days approach, or at the table with a range of lunch or dinner-time seafood, chicken or veal dishes.

Or as we did, with pan-fried pork loin chops, apple sauce and potato cakes.

One to note: 2014 was a great vintage in the Canberra District, and Jim’s Lerida Estate Lake George Pinot Noir explodes with luscious fruit flavours and integrated tannins; at $26.50 a bottle, enjoy with a variety of fare from duck to mushrooms, spring lamb or oily fish.

Ê Channel Ten is making the bold move to revamp its Saturday nights beginning October 8. The all-new ‘MacGyver’, ‘Scorpion’ and ‘Hawaii Five-O’ will form the new-look action-packed line-up.

‘Scorpion’ will kick things off at 6.30pm before ‘MacGyver’ premieres at 7.30pm.

‘Hawaii Five-O’ will anchor the new slate of shows at 8.30pm. It’s expected all eyes will be on the new ‘Macgyver’, who will be back saving the world for the first time in nearly 25 years.

Ê I love a good airport show, with Channel Nine announcing ‘Ready for Takeoff’ will finally return to our screens at 7.30pm on Friday, October 7. Wildlife Show

Thursday, October 6 A Featherdale Wildlife Show will be held at St Clair Library next Thursday, October 6 at 10.30am.

The program helps kids become active, make better food choices, try new foods, reduce screen time and make new friends.

During the warmer months of the year we see a spike of parvovirus cases, and vaccination is the best way to protect against this deadly disease.

Parvovirus is shed from the faeces of an infected dog into soil. We can walk this virus into the backyard on our shoes. It has been recently discovered that other species can contract the virus and not be affected, but shed it in

Even dogs living in their own backyards are not isolated from this infection.

Dogs that become infected with the virus will usually start to shed the virus within three to four days of contracting it, but will not be showing any symptoms. They become ill within seven to 14 days after exposure.

Unlike most other viruses,

parvovirus is stable in the environment and is resistant to the effects of heat, detergents, and alcohol.

Symptoms of parvovirus can vary in each individual dog, but generally we see severe vomiting, diarrhoea (often full of blood), lethargy and inappetance. This can lead to severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and infection in the bloodstream.

An often aggressive and expensive treatment regime of intravenous fluids containing electrolytes, antibiotics, pain relief and anti-nausea medications are given to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances and to make the dog more comfortable.

Young, severely dehydrated puppies are at most risk of not responding favourably to treatment, and may die despite treatment efforts.

Thankfully, parvovirus is a preventable disease through an up-to-date vaccination program. It is important that all puppies receive a series of booster vaccinations and adult dogs receive an annual vaccination.

Once parvovirus has been in the environment, thorough cleaning and disinfection with a parvocidal solution is needed. Disposal of food and water bowls, bedding and other items is often the best option.

ITBS occurs with excessive friction of the distal band over the lateral femoral epicondyle from repetitive movements of the knee. The two main causes of ITBS are inappropriate training or excessive training volumes and poor biomechanics.

Although pain is local at the knee, the cause of the pain often comes from higher up in the hip or down lower in

the foot due to musculoskeletal imbalances. It is vital to treat the source not the symptoms! Concentrating on reducing local pain with isolated methods may give short-term relief but the pain will return if the biomechanical issues are not addressed.

Weak or poor activation of the gluteal muscles are one of the most common findings we see with ITBS patients.

Weak gluteals cause an over activation of your TFL and a rotation of your femur putting excess stress on your ITB. Gluteal strengthening and activation training is a key component of ITB treatment.

Another component many people overlook in their ITBS management is good footwear. Sounds simple right?

Ensuring you have a supportive shoe suited to your foot type prevents excessive pronation at the foot again helping to offload excessive stress on the ITB. When grocery shopping remember bigger doesn’t always mean better. Yes that huge bag of potatoes may seem like a good bargain when compared to a smaller bag but if you don’t use it

you’ve wasted money, along with half a bag of potatoes.

How many times have you picked up an item at the supermarket only to find you already had one at home.

Keep a close eye on what you have on hand so you don’t double up.

If you do end up with an oversupply of certain foods make use of them with bulk meals that can be frozen for later use.

Those cooking for one or two people can find it particularly hard to keep waste down, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat the same meal for several days in a row.

Instead try planning out meals that make use of the same ingredients in a variety of different ways. This way you won’t end up with a pile of sad, wilted vegetables sitting at the bottom of the crisper.

It also pays to get smarter with the food you do throw out by starting a composting system at home for organic matter. This can then be used in the garden to help recycle waste and save money.

Lastly, consider how much food you are really going to need. It’s better to go back to the shops for more rather than throwing food, and money, in the bin.

enrith have re-signed two of their most important players, with skipper Matt Moylan and future Origin star Bryce Cartwright inking new deals to remain at the foot of the Mountains until the end of 2021.

Last week both Moylan and Cartwright agreed to extend their current contracts by an additional four years and three years respectively.

The re-signings are huge for Penrith, who have assembled a team more than capable of challenging for a title in the not too distant future.

This year’s impressive Finals run, where

they were eliminated in week two, was indicative of that plan.

25-year-old Moylan, who took over the Panthers captaincy role and made his Origin debut for NSW this year, said it was great to secure his future.

“To play for my hometown club and to represent the people of Penrith is an honour and a privilege,” he said.

“With the squad we have and the direction that we are heading, I’m sure we’re building towards something special.”

21-year-old Cartwright made his NRL debut in 2014 and, after fighting back from a serious ankle injury, has quickly grown into a key member of the Panthers outfit.

Boasting size, skill and versatility, Cartwright has played 55 games, scored

14 tries and earlier this year was rewarded with a City Origin jumper.

“I’m honoured that the Panthers have shown such faith in me and I’m ecstatic to commit my future to the club,” he said.

“This club has been my home for a long time now and I couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else. With the players, staff and facilities we have here, I’m really excited about what lies ahead.”

Panthers Chairman, Dave O’Neill, said the re-signing of the pair was indicative of Penrith’s steadfast commitment to being a development club.

“It is fantastic to be in a position to reward the hard work and effort of these two outstanding individuals over the last few years,” he said.

“It is also a credit to the Panthers organisation and the direction we’re heading that we can develop these superstar players and keep them for the long term.”

The Penrith Cricket Club member made her Southern Stars debut in 2016 after an impressive season with the Thunder, where she played in every game on the way to winning the inaugural competition.

“To win the first season of the WBBL was amazing,” the 22-year-old said.

Stalenberg believes her WBBL experi-

ence put her in good stead to make the national team earlier this year.

“The WBBL gave me the chance to bat up the order and it helped get my name out there, and really helped me get into the Australian side,” she said.

The Sydney Thunder will open their 2016/17 WBBL campaign against the Melbourne Stars at North Sydney Oval on December 10.

New netball team has Giant potential Extraordinary talent combines to give Giants a real shot at title in first year of National Netball League NATHAN TAYLOR

hey’ve had an extraordinary season on the football field, now the Giants have their very own netball team, which will compete in the all-new National Netball League.

The new club, which will play five games out of Sydney Olympic Park and two in Canberra, is one of eight teams contesting the Australian-only competition, which commences in February 2017.

The other sides include the five existing ANZ Championship teams – Adelaide Thunderbirds, Melbourne Vixens, NSW Swifts, Queensland Firebirds and West Coast Fever – and fellow new licensees Collingwood Magpies Netball Club and Sunshine Coast Lightning.

Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald has assembled a formidable playing roster for the club’s debut season, which features a blend of international representatives and exciting young talent with NSW ties.

NSW stalwarts Kimberlee Green and Susan Pettitt will join the Giants for its inaugural season, alongside English imports Jo Harten and Serena Gutherie, as well as recent Australian Diamond debutant Kristiana Manu’a.

Fitzgerald also made mention of the strong representation of NSW athletes in the Giants team.

“80 per cent of our 2017 roster has a direct link to NSW – whether they were born here, or have played their junior netball here – and I hope this inspires young NSW netballers that one day they too could play for the club,” she said.

“NSW netball has such a strong, proud and rich history, and I’m looking forward to this team contributing to the next chapter.

“I am just thrilled to be home and have the chance to create a new club from the ground up; surrounded by great players that I believe fans will want to watch with interest.”

Indoor Cricket Kim completes remarkable comeback from serious injury NATHAN TAYLOR

wo years ago Kim Butler suffered such a horrific knee injury, that she thought she’d never be able to play sport again.

An absolute sports tragic, Butler injured her knee during a field hockey match but wasn’t diagnosed with a torn ACL until two games later.

“The physio initially said there was nothing wrong with my knee and I ended up playing in a semi final and grand final before discovering I actually had a stuffed ACL,” Butler said.

“It took me ages to come back from that one; I thought that was the end of my sporting career.”

Fortunately for the 44-year-old, it wasn’t the end and next month she’ll make an incredible comeback by representing Australia at the Indoor Cricket Masters World Series in England.

It will be the fourth time Butler has donned the famous green and gold, but the first time since 2008.

After her recent injury and long lay off from the international scene, the Cranebrook resident said she’s excited to be back.

“I’m unsure what to expect because

it has been a long time but I believe in myself,” Butler told the Weekender.

“I’ve been training the house down to get ready. My husband, Mark, takes me to the cricket centre often and helps me train. He’s been very supportive.”

Butler took up indoor cricket when she was just 16-years-old and has been playing it on and off ever since.

Due to a lack of women’s indoor cricket competitions in Sydney, Butler is forced to play on men’s teams to get her indoor cricket fix.

Butler said she only got back into the sport recently after recovering from her injury.

“I only got back into it this year to help out our State team, who didn’t have many players,” she said.

“I loved the game for so long and was eager to come back to it. I had a goal of going to the World Series and now I’m there.”

In October, Butler and her Australian teammates will compete in the over 35’s women’s competition against fellow cricketing giants South Africa, New Zealand and host nation England.

Butler said all eyes will be on the Aussies, who’ll be looking to defend their title as world’s best.

“We haven’t lost since 2008,” she said.

RUGBY LEAGUE: St Marys have finished runners-up in the Ron Massey Cup competition, losing to Mounties 32-16 in last Sunday’s Grand Final at Pirtek Stadium.

Ex-NRL star and captain Nathan Smith was the star of the show for St Marys, scoring a first half double.

St Marys trailed 16-10 at half-time before Mounties quickly extended their lead early in the second half.

Down 26-10, St Marys scored next through Cameron Collins.

he Penrith Panthers will be aiming to be the second side in Holden Cup history to win back-to-back premierships when they take on the Sydney Roosters this Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers, who finished the regular season as minor premiers, will contest their third ever National Youth Competition (NYC) Grand Final after defeating North Queensland 32-16 last Friday at Allianz Stadium.

Penrith led 22-10 at half-time and, despite the odd scare or two, were in control for most of the match. They’ll now take on arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters, who will be playing in their very first NYC decider.

The Roosters qualified for this Sunday’s showdown following a thrilling comeback that saw them overcome the St George Illawarra Dragons 26-20.

Penrith certainly have the wood over this weekend’s opponents in 2016, with the defending premiers defeating the Roosters on two occasions already – a 50-4 smashing in Round 7 and a 40-22 beating in Round 22.

Kick-off between the Panthers and Roosters is at 1.45pm this Sunday at ANZ Stadium.
