PANTHER RUMBLINGS

with the Masked Panther

SCOTT MCRAE GOES SOLO » It appears the Panthers have returned

to the solo work of Scott McRae as far as game day announcements and hosting is concerned. In a shake-up this year, former cheerleader Nat Sinclair shared the duties with McRae for the opening games of the season but has now disappeared from the match day schedule. McRae has been the voice of Panthers Stadium for more than 20 years – first joining the club for the 1998 season.

» Reagan Campbell-Gillard had a strong

performance against the Dragons last Saturday night but it came after a week of major discomfort. RCG had his wisdom teeth out the day after Penrith’s game against the Wests Tigers last month and went several days without solid food.

» Spotted: Panthers recruitment manager Jim Jones being treated like an A-list celebrity at Nepean Village on Sunday morning. Jones was swamped by fans wanting to have a chat about Penrith’s rise to the top of the table.

Panthers ground announcer Scott McRae

» Four Penrith players have made the

NSW Under 18’s squad ahead of next week’s game against Queensland at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Shawn Blore, Hayden Bonanno, Spencer Leniu and Maurice Trindall all made the squad.

» The lead-up to last Saturday’s top of

the table clash at Panthers Stadium had everyone pumped up, including the team at the Western Weekender who celebrated Footy Jersey Friday while raising a little bit of money for the Beanie for Brain Cancer initiative.

» I mentioned a few weeks ago that

rampaging young forward Jack Hetherington has a horrible judiciary record and he needs to improve his discipline. Unfortunately Hetherington has again been charged by the NRL’s Match Review Committee, copping a one match ban this week for Dangerous Contact on Paul Vaughan in last week’s clash against the Dragons.

» Penrith have signed talented Tweed

Heads brothers Brayden and Glenn McGrady. 21-year-old Brayden and 17-year-old Glenn have both signed twoyear deals with the Panthers.

Panthers boss is back with the handle @ philgould15 – and has already been answering fans’ questions on a whole range of rugby league topics.

» Spotted: Sports Minister and Penrith

MP Stuart Ayres at Panthers Stadium last Saturday night with his partner Marise Payne (a Dragons fan). With more than 21,500 fans packing the stadium, it was a great reminder for Mr Ayres of how much fans want suburban footy and not the big stadium strategy for club football.

» James Maloney’s incredible record at

Panthers Stadium continues. The veteran playmaker has never lost at the venue – either as a visitor with an opposition team or in Penrith colours.

» Phil Gould’s on-again off-again rela-

tionship with Twitter is... on-again. The

CC TYRES FAMILY-OWNED & OPERATED, WITH OVER 60 YEARS SERVICING THE PENRITH REGION.

» With so much on the line, it was no

surprise to see New South Wales coach Brad Fittler make the trip to his old home town to watch the Panthers v Dragons game live last Saturday night. Ironically, Queensland coach Kevin Walters was also at Panthers Stadium – working as part of the Fox League team.

» Talking of Fox League, Penrith’s

match against the Dragons was the most watched game on Foxtel over the weekend. 366,000 viewers tuned in – a massive audience. The number was not a surprise but to be honest Fox League didn’t hype up the game as much as they could have. A few weeks ago, the pay TV network had a countdown clock to the Dragons v Storm game in the days prior to the match. No countdown clock in sight for what was a top of the table clash last Saturday night. Fox’s top commentators – Andrew Voss and Warren Smith – were also nowhere to be seen with Brenton Speed leading the broadcast.

PANTHERS ARE FEELING BLUE NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

F

ollowing a standout performance the night before, Nathan Cleary patiently waited all of Sunday to hear the life changing news that he had been selected to make his State of Origin debut. With his parents not home at the time, the 20-year-old Panther sat nervously on the couch waiting for his phone to ring. At 7pm, the phone finally came to life. It was Panthers great and Blues selector, Greg Alexander. The phone call was short and sweet. All Cleary needed to hear were those four important words: “You’re the Blues halfback”. Cue the celebrations – albeit solo-style until his dad Ivan and mum Bec got home. Cleary, who is still to play his 50th NRL game, was one of four Panthers who received the news of a lifetime last Sunday evening.

Along with Cleary’s halves partner James Maloney, in-form Penrith prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard and livewire utility Tyrone Peachey were also given the exciting news that they too would make their Origin debuts in Melbourne on Wednesday night. The last time Penrith had four NSW representatives in an Origin match was back in 2004 when Luke Lewis, Luke Rooney, Craig Gower and Trent Waterhouse all made the team. For Cleary, it is potentially the start of a long representative career. Experts including Panthers boss and former Blues coach Phil Gould have called on NSW to stick with the Panthers star long-term. Cleary was in serious doubt to make his Origin debut this year when he suffered a knee injury in Round 3. He’s played two games since returning from the injury, including a starring role in Penrith’s 28-2 victory over the Dragons last Saturday night. With so many Origin spots up for grabs, Blues coach Brad Fittler was at a packed

James Maloney and Nathan Cleary are the NSW halves. Photo: NRL Photos Panthers Stadium last weekend to watch his new halves in action. “I deliberately went out to see how Nathan and James [Maloney] went,” Fittler said. “It was a huge occasion out there at Penrith… him and James were the two that steered their team around and got the result on Saturday night.” With so many questions surrounding Maloney’s defence, Fittler said he’s been impressed with his number six of late

after having a quiet word with him a few weeks’ back. “In his last two games, no team has scored down his side. He seems to have bettered his defence,” Fittler said. “He’ll also be positioned next to Boyd [Cordner], and they’ve defended together before.” One “tough” call Fittler had to make was to Panthers star Trent Merrin who, despite playing out of his skin at prop this season, just missed the cut for Origin I.

Why New South Wales will clean sweep the Origin series

JAMIE SOWARD

A

fter months of speculation and intrigue, we finally learned this week the two teams who will go head to head in State of Origin I in Melbourne. I think Brad Fittler and Kevin Walters have both picked really suited sides to combat each other on Wednesday night. NSW have chosen a side that’s fast and has the potential to score plenty of points, while the Maroons have selected a team that has a nice mix of players that have been there before but who are in form too. It’s all shaping up to be a unique and very open series. A few weeks ago I declared that Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary shouldn’t be chosen for Origin I as I was worried how he would come back from a serious knee injury. But after seeing his performance against the Dragons last Saturday, I have no doubt he’ll do the job – and do it well. Yes, I copped plenty of criticism from leaving him out of my initial Blues team but unfortunately I wasn’t able to hold my Origin I team back until after the Dragons clash. I spoke with Nathan earlier this week

at the True Blues dinner and I think he wasn’t even sure how he was going to fair in his first two games back. One key aspect that will help Nathan in his Origin debut and throughout the series is having his Panthers halves partner James Maloney with him every step of the way. I think the pair will share the duties in steering the side, just like they do at Penrith. Having Maloney will be a nice security blanket for Nathan, not that he’ll need it. I was also very happy to see fellow Penrith pair Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Tyrone Peachey selected for the Blues as well. For the past year I’ve been talking this duo up deluxe in this very column. I’ve been of the opinion that both players needed to start games and not come off the bench. Well, ever since that’s been happening, the Panthers have been doing some great things. For me, Reg is the best front rower in the world right now. Hearing his passion at the True Blues dinner the other night was music to my ears, it was the kind of

passion NSW had lacked in years’ past and now we finally have it. As for Tyrone, he is a deadest match winner. I love the way he plays and he’s not going to let anyone down. Yes, he may miss a tackle or two but who hasn’t?

The Primary Classroom Program at Panthers on the Prowl has been running continuously for 16 years. We serve local primary schools to assist in the development of social and emotional learning targeted at small groups. Each week, rom a thanks to Hertz, we nominate a student of the week from ght participating school to highlight their efforts. efforts.

I’m tipping NSW to win the opening game 27-14 and go on to clean sweep the series 3-0. I think Dragons enforcer Tyson Frizell will take out the Wally Lewis Medal for Player of the Series.

Sammy Chong Nee The student of the week this week is Sammy Chong Nee. Sammy attends Orchard Hills Public School and has enjoyed our Rock and Water lessons at Panthers on the Prowl. We have been delivering Rock and Water lessons as part of our program for the past seven years. Rock and Water is a social skills program that teaches students various interpersonal and self-reflective skills through physical cues and games. Recently we had Penrith Panthers’ James Tamou attend the classroom and join in on one of our Rock and Water lessons (pictured left). For Sammy, it was a valuable experience to participate in this lesson with James and listen to him reflect on how he applies a “Rock attitude” or a “Water attitude” to different situations in his own life. Thanks to James and congratulations to Sammy!

Panthers flex their premiership muscles

ANDY RAYMOND W

hat a night at Panthers Stadium last Saturday as Anthony Griffin’s men flexed their premiership muscles against the red hot

Dragons. St George-Illawarra have been the team to beat this season, but the Panthers showed that this competition is far from a one horse race. A sellout crowd of 21, 565 were treated to a rugby league clinic by the mountain men, who played like a team possessed during a stunning 80 minute performance. Nathan Cleary and James Maloney were again outstanding for Penrith, with both players cementing their spots in the Blues side after a dominant display over the competition’s in-form halves pairing of Ben Hunt and Gareth Widdop. But special praise also needs to be given to the Panthers forward pack. The Panthers had four forwards – Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Trent Merrin, Isaah Yeo and Vilame Kikau – all run for over 100 metres, while fill-in fullback Dallin Watene-Zelezniak was outstanding in the number one jersey, running for a game high 267 metres. The Dragons, however, failed to have a

single forward run over 100 metres. It’s a telling statistic. If Penrith’s attack was impressive their steely resolve in defence was just as good if not better. The Dragons threw plenty at the Panthers’ defensive line, but like they have all season, the Panthers side just kept turning up. The Panthers have now set themselves up for a genuine run at this year’s premiership, but will need to get through a tough State of Origin series first. With success comes the burden of representative duties, with the Panthers providing four players to the Blues side this year in James Maloney, Nathan Cleary, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and the in-form Tyrone Peachey. Anthony Griffin may have had a smile from ear-to-ear watching his side ply their trade on Saturday night, but you can guarantee he’ll be watching Wednesday night’s series opener with baited breath, praying his fab four make it through the game injury-free. Catch every game of the NRL season live and ad-free during play on Fox League. It’s on Foxtel channel 502.
